Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Fine blues rock. Sort of bridges the gap between Muddy Waters and Sabbath. Waiting for the Bus has some proper chugging bits. Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers is practically hair metal with a few 'virtuouso' solos over the most boring bass line you can imagine. Master of Sparks hints at something more interesting in the intro before reverting to type. Precious and Grace is the highlight, essentially a Sabbath song, with a stripped back bassline cascading guitar fills and Dusty Hill reaching for Ozzy Osborne lyrics. La Grange rocks hard with the John Lee Hooker groove but also reveals that unlike Sabbath, at the core this is just white boy blues and isn't trying to accomplish anything new. Sheik is a funky number with stabbing guitar licks, it's fun coming off like a Stevie Wonder/Hendrix/Average White Band tribute. I suppose this album is fine but I'm sitting here in the 2020s with the music industry in shambles and every song ever written at my fingertips. If I want to listen to blues I'll listen to the originals.

May revisit, there's some good stuff in here. a-haw-haw-haw-haw

Mola!

Everything is done to perfection. It just gets a little repetitive. La grange is awesome

Groovy.

Classic dad music

not a zz top fan but solid tunes

i liked it

unpretentious groovin' guitar rock. apart from "la grange," tracks are unmemorable and bleed together a bit.

Soulful blues rock album.

Cannot fault the musicianship on this one and when it’s good it’s really good but… it just didn’t click for me! Favourite Tracks: Waitin’ for the Bus, La Grange Least Fav Track: Move Me on Down the Line

To steal a line from David Sims of the Blank Check podcast, an album with rocks in its head. Still a lot of fun, and La Grange is pretty undeniable.

Hit or miss, some good ones

If I could give this partial stars it would be a 2.5 The good songs are really good but the rest is just filler. It gets a bump up because of the memories I have of sitting up late at night listening to this with friends when Eliminator came out and we discovered ZZTop wasn't a new band

I have never listened to Z Z top before, I am looking forward to this, I am expecting Bearded rock and roll!! What I got is what I expected and I enjoyed it. Beardy blues rock with some great guitar riffs. The album is enjoyable but not ground breaking, its a decent score of 3/5. it lacks a couple of really big songs! Favourite song: Hot blue and righteous and La grange Least favourite: None of the tracks were bad! Album artwork: Green!!!

Some great tunes..La grange in particular a stand out. Got a bit samey towards the end but the musicianship is top drawer.

More bluesy than I thought it would be. Would try out again. 3.5 stars

I'm not one who has sought out all of ZZ Top's discography. I've heard their hits like most. But let's see what they had to offer here, in what ended up being their breakthrough album. This is Texas rock if you were ever to give that label a distinct sound. Blues, boogie, swampy, what say you. "La Grange" is the blues rock classic that everyone's heard at least once, and is surrounded by some other, slower blues rock with a Southern twang. Not a bad record overall, just a bit lukewarm outside of the big hit I guess.

Rating: 7/10 A-haw haw haw-haw Heh, a-haw haw-haw

Didn’t get all of it listened to, but it’s ZZ Top. What more do you need to know?

I like the early ZZ Top before they became a caricature of themselves. Greazzy Texas blues good stuff

Like Blues Vibes and Guitar

Da hani immerno chli e ami-rock overdose und dun mi darum widermal bi tres puntos por los tres hombres festlege. Han ehrlichgseit aber au nur miteme halbe ohr zueglost.

I feel my freedom growing

68/100. The album is mostly okay, with "La Grange" standing out as the only truly noteworthy track. The rest of the songs feel mediocre.

I struggled with this one. I wanted to like it more than I actually did. It is unpretentious, unsophisticated, blues rock. I'm not a fan of the vocal delivery. Reluctantly 3/5.

I like maybe 4 songs by ZZ Top. La Grange is one of those songs, so this album has that going for it. The rest of the songs are forgettable. They’re not bad, just nothing special. I’m sure some people probably really dig this, I just find it kind of boring.

Beards, beer, and bros

Best version of blues for me

I enjoyed it, solid overall and didn’t feel too long or anything. Straight forward rock.

A few great songs and a whole lot of filler. Not sure why this is on the list.

This album rocks, exactly what you’d expect. Nothing over the top, nothing necessarily amazing, but nothing bad either. Solid classic rock.

3.5 - pretty good - not what I necessarily expected

Not best but a couple of hits.

I like the feel of old ZZ Top. Just fun party blues rock. I'll also never tire of La Grange, and i think this album gets a star for that track alone.

É impressionante a revolução que as guitarras tiveram na década de 1970. Não há música ruim quando se trata de ZZ Top.

decent, I liked waiting on bus and la grange.

Well executed early 70s bluesy rock. Exactly what you’d expect and nothing special.

Okay, but on the other hand, I could be listening to Sharp-Dressed Man on repeat for fifty minutes.

I will forever love La Grange but ladly that’s it

chill and kinda catchy la grange sounds rly familiar, especially the guitar, la grange was my favourite but i only had the chance to listen to the bus one and the jesus one. i liked the jesus one

its fine, only real replayable song for me is the most popular one and the last one. Singing at best sounds like a pre-cursor to red hot chili peppers but at worst is just ass. guitars and solos are cool in some sections. overall around 5/10

Pretty classic bluesy rock, which isn’t really my thing but it’s okay for what it is.

We all know La Grange (that is, in fact, the only ZZ Top song I know) is a classic. Outside of that, and some wicked solos, especially the guitarwork on Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers, this doesn't really offer up much. Once you get up to La Grange, you've pretty much heard all they have to offer on this record. I didn't hate this in the slightest, but it just teeters off and it really does feel a bit plain. Still, an enjoyable listen, and a nice, fresh change in tone after having to listen to another fucking dreadful The Smiths album.

Tres Hombres - ZZ Top (1973) Occupies a similar position to me as something like Machine Head, where I am having a tough time really attributing different praise to the album for its really strong elements because they are just a given. this is another album that feels like it is not trying to impress me but just put on some good tunes and have a fun time. Compared to similar albums in this space though I am not sure where to place it. I like a few of these songs quite a bit, but there's not a lot of songs to this album and the non-hits really do feel like they are there to just occupy the space to qualify this as an album. It feels harsh to critique it this way as the songs I like would be a highlight on any album. But the lesser known stuff does not fill this album out too well for me. Highlights: Ride The Bus, Master of Sparks, La Grange

Bit of a disappointing listen to be quite honest. I suppose I’m really only familiar with ZZ tops hits. This is music for the specific class of bloke who has a beer gut, a long and unkempt beard, and some very faded tattoos, who is REALLY into cars. Probably got like Peter Brock memorabilia in his man cave/shed and still buys nudie mags. Possible project car/motorbike that he will never finish because he’s too busy doing jobs around the house for his nagging wife. Only wears footy shorts and either old hivis work shirts or those blue shearer singlets. Decent album but the deep cuts don’t really do much for me personally.

Is this only on here because of La Grange? Because that’s what it feels like. A serviceable album but there is a reason people only know La Grange and Sharp Dressed Man (and I guess Sleeping Bag too if you’re a REAL ZZ Too diehard). It’s a garage beers album, not something I’m going to go out of my way to listen to but not something I’ll complain about if someone gives it a spin. Highlights: Hot, Blue and Righteous, La Grange

hell yeah brother

不炸耳朵,好评

okay for a road trip i guess

Good greasy fun. "LaGrange" has an all-time hook and "Waiting for the Bus" is strong opener, and "Hot, Blue & Righteous" and "Master of Sparks" are best of the deep cuts. Rounding down because Eliminator should be nowhere near this list.

Nunca los había escuchado en LP. Buen nivel, me han sorprendido gratamente.

Nice vibe, not that adventurous though

1. Groovy beat. Not sure about the singing so far, a bit lazy the singing i feel. Nice guitar playing, guitar solo is good. *** 2. "Bluesy" start to the song. I like the singing a bit more. *** 3. Groovy, singing is getting better. Good guitars. *** 4. Liked this one. **** 5. Not my favorite ** 6. Best one so far. Good harmonies, singing is good, sound is tight **** 7. Not feeling this one as much, maybe its because i liked the one before so much. ** 8. Classic tune. Guitar sound is iconic. Perhaps a bit overplayed through time, especially in movie/television. Still a ***** song 9. Again not as good as the previous song. ** 10. More melodic than many of the songs. Nice singing. Guitar playing is great on it. *** In whole i would say. A classic song, two really good songs, a bit more of 3 star songs and two that i didn't like as much on the first listen. Guitar playing on the album is TOP

Very middle of the road. Nothing terrible but apart from La Grange nothing memorable either.

It was fine enough. I'll use this time to say I should have put common at a 4.

Probably should be a 4 given when it came out but I've listened to a lot of rock music from the decades since so this just doesn't hit like it probably did at the time.

Not bad, also not very exciting.

its guitar rock. Nothing that i really found too amazing, gut it wasn't unbearable. Never really listened to ZZ Top, a and likely won't listen to ZZ top again

a couple good songs one great one but not really compelled to listen again

never the biggest ZZ Top fan. But I wasn't overly familiar with this album or the songs on it. I liked it a bit more than their mainstream hits...

ZZ Top is cool in that they have a unique, super-recognizable sound. They are also smart enough to know what they do and not overcomplicated it. Each song is one cool guitar lick on repeat, but never for more than three minutes - and sometimes with a key change in there to keep it interesting. Simple. This is also probably their best album.

Tres stars for tres hombres

I was initially not excited about this album, as all I can think of with ZZ Top is "Sharp Dressed Man," which was sadly used as the theme song for the show Duck Dynasty. I was thinking maybe this was some music for my boyfriend's dad (of the long beard, aesthetically appropriate), but ready to be open minded about it. BF predicted this album would come in at a 2 or 3 for me after I told him that I was "pleasantly surprised" that I didn't hate it, lol. My favorite tracks are "Waiting for the Bus" (with a nice transition into "Jesus Just Left Chicago"--I am a sucker for a good transition), "Move Me On Down the Line," which is what I imagine the Rolling Stones wished they sounded like when they play white-man blues, and obviously the classic "La Grange." The rest of the songs are pretty good-a driving, blues-inflected album that is a decent listen all around. I also learned that Billy Gibbons has a 5-octave + 5 note vocal range, which is bigger than that of Freddie Mercury, Axl Rose and Mariah Carey.

I enjoyed the blues influence on this album. Goes without saying that "La Grange" is a classic.

Honestly, this album didn't impress me as much as I thought it would. Maybe I went in with too much of an expectation that the album would sound a lot like La Grange (shout out Guitar Hero). But that wasn't the case. I wanted more hard rockin' and serious licks, which this album didn't really produce sadly. I waffled with this being a two, but I think a three works fine. It's not a bad album, but it didn't knock my socks off.

La Grange is a classic. I love the style of these guys, but everything sort of just sounded the same. Still it’s something I won’t ever get tired of.

Real solid 70s rock album. Some catchy tunes and two that I knew. I liked their bluesy sound. They seem like a band that would be better to see live than just listening to an album. Strong 3

La Grange is an all time song. I thought the album in general was fine, but that song is a banger for sure. 3 based upon my ratings for the list. Too many 3’s recently. We gotta mix it up!

La Grange might be one of the most fun rock songs to listen to, but it’s not enough to boost this above a three. Enjoyed the classic rock vibes, but there was a lot that blended together in this really short album.

I'm not the biggest ZZ Top fan, but you have to respect the ripping guitar throughout this album. I felt cool just walking around with this playing.

Gostosinho demais a sonoridade e La Grange é simplesmente sensacional. Enebriante demais.

Quite good.

Great southern rock

-I had never listened to ZZ Top before this but apparently my dad and his friend once dressed up as them for Halloween at school lol -I do like it tho. Sort of started to blend together by the second half but the blues rock elements add for a nice touch -Favorites are Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers and Sheikh

oh yeah..... good stuff.

Eh.. I liked it I guess. Some pretty funky takes on blues songs but it didn’t blow me away. 6/10

liked it more than the one before from zz top, fine

The most three-y 3 to ever 3. It’s not a bad album. It’s not a very captivating album, though. It’s an enjoyable listen, but other than La Grange, and maybe a few other tracks, it’s not a very memorable listen either. It just feels half-baked to me, but perhaps I’m holding this to a much higher standard than I should be. I fully recognize this album for what it is; it’s for when you’re on the road, trucking along, and you need some rock music to listen to without giving a shit. It totally works in that sense; this is fully competent 70s rock to drink some beer to. It doesn’t challenge itself too much, nor does it ever really challenge the listener. It didn’t really wow me as the listener, either. The instrumentation, other than the usually more involved guitar solos, feels a bit neglected and basic. The percussion in particular sounds like I could play it on some of these tracks, and the extent of my rhythm/instrumental experience is like, playing Rhythm Heaven and slapping a desk. I dunno, it’s just sort of disappointing compared to the last ZZ Top album we got – they definitely grew more as musicians, and got more comfortable exploring complexities, but the core of what made Eliminator work is here. It’s just not all there in terms of confidence, instrumentation, or bombast. It’s a solid 33 minutes though; I don’t hate it, and there’s not a single bad track here, but I just don’t think I can go any higher than a 3.

LaGrange. Other stuff ok. If you like southern rock - don't pass it up

sjarmerandi texasblús. frekar skemmtilegt, áhrif frá húkkaranum. vill aðra, held ég en kannski er það örlyndið. 3,5.

“La Grange” is by far the best song on the album and it’s not close.

Bluesy, Rocky and Rolly. Not the best album I've heard on this list but definitely not the worst.

Quite a good album if a bit relative. La Grange is a banging tune.

Pas pire contrey

Cool vibes. Better than anticipated. Solid 3

I've never intentionally listened to ZZ Top. This is some pretty solid bluesy rock. Fun listen.

Not my favorite but solid

Nice album

Generic blues-rock to me. Nothing stands out as especially unique. La Grange blasts tho.

This album was fine. ZZ Top was never quite my cup of tea for some reason, so it's no surprise this album fell flat for me. 'La Grange' is a classic though and takes my fave slot.

Clean sound, classic, while still just dirty enough to rock.

6.5/10

Solid 70's rock. Reminds me of roadhouses and dive bars.

holy shit man ZZ Top doing a blues style is so much better than their dumpster fire stadium rock albums of the ‘80s. I actually enjoyed many aspects of this and even tho it’s pretty inconsistent as a whole, there’s a lot to get out of it

Fun stuff but another 3 star

Never really got into them but that was ok.

It's ZZ Top, inoffensive but phenomenally boring compared to it's contemporaries. Knowing this came out 2 years after Who's next & Zeppelin IV, doesn't really help it's case.

Solid country rock ass kicking album, but just a bit slower than my speed and no virtuoistic playing

A little repentitive and rock a Billy like. Some weird switches in the first track Overall, meh.

B minus it makes me realize that I don’t think I really like the blues.

Surprisingly enjoyable! I had never listened to ZZTop before, but really liked this album. The first three were great!

I was familiar with this. Cuts were on our jukebox in high school cafeteria.

I swear la grange is the opening song for a show but I can’t remember which

This had good vibes but I liked the CCR that came on afterwards more.

Well at least this was short

Not an unpleasant way to spend 33 minutes. Simpsons: Yes

It was ok. Easy to listen to. The best tracks were La Grange and Shiek

It was good and if I liked ZZ Top I’d bloody love it but they just don’t gel with me as much as I with they did.

Waitin' for the Bus 3.5 Jesus Just Left Chicago 3.4 Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers 3.3 Master of Sparks 3 Hot, Blue and Righteous 3.1 Move Me on Down the Line 3 Precious and Grace 3.2 La Grange 3.3 Shiek 3.1 Have You Heard? 3 Score: 3.19

A-haw haw haw-haw

Exactly as expected

Some pretty good songs on here. La Grange is a banger. But it's all a bit samey, a bit too monotonous. And the slow song is just plain boring.

Favs: Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers, Master of Sparks, La Grange Least fav: Hot, Blue, and Righteous

More interesting than I thought it would be. 3.

This was fun. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

Another one I somehow haven’t heard of. It was good, some really funky tracks mixed in. I’d listen to the highlights again for sure. Great guitar. Rocked out a bit. It did improve as it continued. Highlights: Waitin’ for the Bus Move Me on Down the Line La Grange

Tres Hombres is an album that is pretty basic but still good. The album does get the vibe of a southern sound to a T. There are songs that had a hard rock sound (which dominated most of the album) but they also did have some ones that had more of a country style which i think is quite cool. Unfortunately this album is a bit basic which is to be expected since it seems to be an earlier hard rock album but i still would have liked to see some more interesting ideas and elements. This album is a good one, i just wish it had some more things going for it. Best Song: La Grange Worst Song: Sheik

Ok but a bit forgettable

3 Very mid classic rock album, but I’ll go with the higher side of “okay” just because of La Grange. Great rock track - everything else here is whatever. I will say, I thought ZZ Top was more of a hard rock band, but this was actually a lot more of a Southern, bluesy rock kind of thing - though, I don’t really feel like I gained anything with that insight. I’ve never been much of a fan of the group to begin with, and this didn’t do anything to change that. Hell, I may have actually liked this a bit more if it was heavier, as I thought a lot of what I heard here was kind of dull. Outside of La Grange, the only highlight for me here was Jesus Just Left Chicago, but for primarily one reason - it sounds just like Ride On by AC/DC. Like, to the point that I think those boys from down under have some explaining to do. Fortunately for ZZ, Ride On does happen to fall in my upper tier of AC/DC songs (it’s Bon’s one career moment of vulnerability, and it’s beautiful), so I kind of enjoyed this one as well - though I think it lacks the edge or personality of AC/DC’s. Which, honestly, leads me to my major critique of this album and really ZZ Top as a whole - they just don’t seem to have any sort of distinctness or personality to their music that sets them apart from other classic rock artists of the era, at least for me. Like, when I think of ZZ Top, I think of one of those bands whose record you bought from the bargain bin at the record store just because of the name and then never ended up playing. Still, it’s not bad, and it has La Grange on it, so it’s getting a 3 - or “tres calificación” if you will. On a related note, speaking of recognizing the group’s name, ironically, I had two Mandela Effects that came up while I was listening to this album. Firstly, I apparently have always thought that the band’s name has two “P”s in it, to the point where I started off writing this review with a few instances of “ZZ Topp”. I have no idea why I thought that, but then it happened again when I learned the drummer is, in fact, not the lead singer of the band, which is another falsity I seemed to have had roaming about in the very back of my mind for most of my lifetime. I don’t know if someone was feeding me ZZ Top misinformation as a kid or if I just made a couple very random, inconsequential assumptions at some point, but if nothing else, I guess I’m thankful this album made the list for at least setting me straight on those two things.

Fairly standard beardy rock. I think this list is making me more difficult to please! But this was better than most albums I’ve hard recently

Background boogie. Nothing stood out.

ZZTop is very much like AC/DC to me. They have 2 maybe 3 songs, but they do them well.

It turns out, that La Grange is the only one of my favorite ZZ Top songs that was actually done by ZZ Top; the rest were Lynrd Skynrd songs I’d misattributed to ZZ Top, like Gimme Three Steps. La Grange is surely a classic, and the rest was solid.

Perfectly acceptable southern rock

3.5 Roadhouse Rock.

Decent southern rock, a good example of the genre.

There are some decent tunes on here which seem to demand that this album is better than a 2 but overall I think it's barely a 3.

On the one hand it's ZZ Top. The guitar is incredible and this is about as rock 'n' roll as it gets. On the other hand, that's about all it is, and it doesn't have the depth I hear in other artists.

Decent guitar, lots of blues, not quite my favorite style though

Good blues, but nothing that special?

I usually like the first 20 seconds of any zz top song then it is the same riff for 4 minutes

Good for if you're a middle aged biker dude in a bar. So I guess kind of cool but kind of bland. 'La Grange' makes up for it. That is one kick-ass song.

This album had some good vibes. ZZ Top just has fun music

I shit on blues a lot for being repetitive and antiquated, but this is the type of blues I can get behind. It has energy. 6.2/10

Some good tunes. Quite formulaic but what isn't? 3

Back half of the album was much better than the first half

La Grange is a classic. The rest of this is just ok.

Great rhythm and blues rock and roll

Perfectly fine dad rock

Cool guitar, boring voice 2.5

Better than I expected. Loved some of the riffs. Specifically Le Grange and Waitin’ for the Bus

Mira, me sorprendió. No esperaba que fuese algo más que La Grange, que es un clásico en toda regla. Y sí hay temas que puedo olvidar, pero hay otros que están bastante bien.

Beardy blues not bad (also not great). This album strips it back to basics: your stale-beer pub, a dusty Harley, ride off into the sunset type of shit (and it does it well). I only recognized "La Grange" but there's a bunch of other good songs mixed in here (with the right amount of mild salvation). Big props for never once singing about love or romance. This might be the only good thing that came out of Texas.

ZZ Top before the beards is ok. La Grange being their best song and highlight here. They do have a working man sound that appeals to the blue collar boys. Simple bluesy rock that runs right down the middle...not bad, not great. They get better as the beard grow...2.5.

Middle of the pack rock album. Some decent songs but other than La Grange nothing really stands out for me. There some nice guitar work by Billy Gibbons. ZZ is fun for their beards and they have a handful of hits but nothing super special. 2.73 stars

This is alright. I've never found ZZ Top that compelling and it didn't really convert me but it's fun enough

Fav: Jesus Just Left Chicago Least Fav: Sheik

Just meh, really. It trundled along sounding kinda bluesy and that’s all I remember

The album’s fine and all, but the most important thing to know is that ZZ Top has a member with the last name “Beard” who’s the only one of the trio without an immense beard. Ironic.

I assume this is on here because La Grange is used EVERYWERE and is petty dope. The rest of the album is pretty good for Southern Blues--just not my genre.

Don’t really enjoy the time

Classic

La grange. Bien.

Great fun start to this journey, not usually "my jam", a hot sunny afternoon in Texas being my worst nightmare as a reserved Brit so a nice surprise. Had a beer after listening.

Enjoyable

Really a high point in classic rock. The guitars go crazy in this

Not bad. Only one song that I recognized. I enjoyed the more bluesy feel but was not bowled over.

I liked it but it didn't really stand out

Not as brash as I was expecting. Quite classy in places.

La Grange is a legendary song but the rest isn't the strongest. I prefer this to their 80s stuff but still not amazing

Have Mercy! I'd agree that this album is a staple for rock/blues/boogie-woogie. Kicking off with a killer 1-2 punch to open the album with "Waitin' On The Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago", but the following "Beer Drinkers..." is a little weak across the whole track except for Gibbons' solo. The song list as a whole has some ups and downs, with some weaker tracks in the mix but great playing all the same. Of course you have one of their biggest hits before switching up to a more 80's pop working of their core sound on the album Eliminator with "La Grange". All in all, a good album despite it's flaws. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but don't feel quite right giving it a 4, so 3 stars I guess

Pretty good at being music you think of when thinking of Texan music.

I like "La Grange" and the blend of blues and rock in "Jesus Just Left Chicago," but I was pretty indifferent to the other songs on the album.

I grew a beard listening to this one, 2.8ish for me. I like the bluesy rock feel but I get bored with it.

Pretty good. Glad I got to listen to more ZZ Top. Nothing spectacular, but not a bad album!

marromenos

Good album!

Better the first half

Feels wrong to pronounce z as zee but feels worse to call them 'zed zed top' so that's why I gave this album a 3

These guys have some funny music videos. It was a 6/10 album.

The transition between songs are really smooth Jesus continua son voyage jusqu'à Paris

You know the ZZ Top sound. They deliver consistently.

Pretty fun! Loud, rip-roaring time and exactly how I expected ZZ top to sound

The beards might be long but the songs are short! These are fun and playful tunes but these guys have never been my fav

Havia me sido recomendado outro álbum do ZZ Top à algum tempo atrás, o Eliminator.

Pretty ok

Liked this alot more than i was expecting. they weren't a parody of themselves at this point

Unexpected

Decent ZZ Top album, definitely worse than Eliminator and only special because of La Grange. Thanks to that song, I give this 3 stars.

Cool beards with cool music

I enjoyed most of the songs. Fave song "La Grange" 3/5

Grizzled guitar-heavy southern rock. Not quite as into this one as Eliminator; it’s a bit rawer and realer, but it’s just not quite as fun to listen to. Still, far from bad. Best song: La Grange

This sounds completely different to what I know ZZ Top and I guess that's why it's on the list. I really like how it opens but I kind of lose interest when Hot, Blue and Righteous kicks in. La Grange is great but then the album loses me again.

Just good ole southern rock.

Standard classic rock, with LA Grange an exception.

This one was interesting. And a reminder that ZZ Top were just 3 dudes from Texas who loved the blues. They have to be one of the weirdest pop sensations of the 80s. Nice to hear their blues roots here. Definitely a bit light since they included 3 live versions of tracks.

Beaucoup plus fade que Eliminator malheureusement. Ce n'est pas mauvais mais ça sonne comme du rock standard de ces années. L'influence southern le démarque un tantinet mais je ne qualifierais pas ça d'essentiel avant de mourir. 6/10

Fun one

Easy to listen to classic rock. I thought at times some of the songs kind of melded together. Waitin' for the Bus was a great opener. Not sure if I would listen to the whole album again but I would listen to certain songs and more ZZ Top.

It’s 1973 and the boys are playing the blues. Enjoyed this.

La grange. Bien

Funny these tunes seem to end just when they get started. Short and sweet. Nice Texas blues rock kept direct and simple. Straightforward, if that doesn't diminish how engaging it is. What is Hot, Blue, and Righteous about? Who cares!

Starts off fun - La Grange was very toe-tap-alicious. Not consistent but not bad.

I tend to mix up ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd and will probably continue to do so. Both groups make me think of being a teenager in rural South Jersey and how much joy a good guitar riff brought me. I enjoyed Tres Hombres a lot and found myself frolicking to Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers. Will I ever search "ZZ Top" to play again? No. But I'm glad this one had a spin before I die.

I liked it, it was a chill album to listen to.

Better than I expected. Generic, easy-access rock with some solid guitar work. Nothing 'exceptional' about it though.

Musically solid but not the catchiest. Worth a listen but likely not a repeat.

Enjoyed the general hair rock vibes, but not really to my tastes

You know what… I don’t hate this. Solid white boy boues. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Feat, John Lee Hooker, it’s all in there. They must have really jumped the shark in the 8”a with sharp dressed man (my only real knowledge of ZZ Top until now).

It's not as good as eliminator for me

It's very ok, 'La Grange' rocks though.

Definitely a fun album.

Some pretty good Southern rock that's only really held back by the repetitive structure of some of the tracks along with some flat lyrics I could kind of care less for on a track like "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers." "La Grange" is definitely the highlight of this record for sure though.

That's a lot of guitar

Não é ruim, mas tbm não é bom foi legal de ouvir

Rock + blues é bão

More meh than I expected

Pretty solid

Nice groovy tracks.

- off to a good start in terms of the guitar. getting an excellent diet of electric guitar the last few days - enjoying this cause it’s still rock but it’s just a little chiller than all the qotsa - 3/5. probably won’t listen much again, didn’t add

I prefer the glammier sillier end of ZZ Top but they clearly still had a pop edge here. While it's straight up blues, they keep everything simple (while musically tight and varied -they just don't overegg everything) and short, which makes it a zippy, fun blues album. I likely won't go back to it, but it wasn't a waste of my time, as many more noodly, indulgent, miso first blues albums are.

A haiku: I love ZZ Top Also don’t love ZZ Top A-haw, haw, haw, haw

da war noch Luft nach oben, aber La Grange ;-)

- a lot less rock n roll than I was expecting but still good - some good jams, could have some chill beers to this album

- blues-y but not over the top - something that could hit on a warm summer afternoon

Great guitars. I almost want to say the guitar solos are most of what the songs have going for them, because each song is mainly guitar solo, but the vocals do a good job of accompanying, and hey guitars are what ZZ Top is all about. Good background music for being a dad. The crowd sounds electric in the live versions, bet they'd be a riot. Top songs: Beer drinkers and hell raisers Hot blue and righteous La grange

pretty fun blues rock album. Not my favorite genre but they're pretty good.

It was really good.

well. it’s zz top

Onvervalste rockmuziek. De mannen vooral bekend vanwege hun baard hebben ook echt wel wat in hun mars.

LaGrange is a great song, plus a couple nice blues numbers, but the rest is forgettable.

The album was good but very similar. Not as much Spanish guitar or motifs as I was hoping for. If there was more variety, it would be better. I had known La Grange before this, good song. Standouts: Master of Sparks, Move Me on Down the Line, and La Grange.

Decent blues. La Grange is the clear standout, other songs sound a bit samey. But I would listen again.

Cool album! Pretty mellow considering I was expecting an all out rock and roll album. You can hear that when you get to the live bonus tracks on the 2006 remaster they definitely sound rockier. Solid group of songs and flows quite nicely! Highlight Hot blue and righteous

Slick guitars, hard rock baybeee

Overall not bad. Some songs, like Sheik are just too simple and end up boring. Waitin' For the Bus and La Grange are blues-ey and Southern, and groove well. Not all of the album is good.

Cool vintage sound.

Meh rock and roll but also La Grange.

Great guitar work

Interesting. Not what I was expecting. Before they becqme a charicature I guess? What I thought derrick and the dominoes should have been. They understand what they are playing and are pretty good at mixing genres. Still not really my jam. But good.

Solid rock and blues. I’ve never really been inclined to listen to ZZ Top. I felt like I was in a biker bar the whole time. Clearly talented. Not really for me.

La Grange

La Grange is a classic. Not a huge fan of the rest. A bit too generic. The singer has an interesting voice and does some unique stuff but the background music is pretty forgettable. 5/10

classic rock, liked it but have known only one song, would rather listen again

La Grange is so distinct and iconic. The rest of the album feels like very generic 70s rock. Nothing amazing and nothing horrible. 3 stars because of the song La Grange.

Did not finish

Perfectly okay.

First time listening to a Zz Top album - this is a nice collection of western inflected guitar blues. These guys do some crooning here too. There are a handful of songs here that I had heard before but never knew the name of (La Grange being the big one, a haw haw haw haw)

I love classic rock and there are songs of ZZ Top that I enjoy. Overall, not my favorite album but several enjoyable moments. Yes, I’m getting pickier and pickier in my old age.

Estuvo bien, no hubo nada excepcional 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is alright

I prefer ZZ TOPs 80s escapades, but this one, Blues and Boogie oriented as it is, is a joy to listen as well, even if it's missing some variety. 3/5

I’m not the biggest fan of ZZ Top. In my mind they’re that cheese band from the 80s with the spinning, furry guitars. But this album has a few good songs (Master of Sparks, Have You Heard, and Waiting For The Bus) and the iconic La Grange. But the rest of the album is uninteresting.

Great band. Enjoyed this.

It’s ok

Unique voices and musical style. Enjoyed some songs but some dragged.

Dope riffs, 3.3

Not bad, but nothing I would really listen to again high 2/low 3.

Waitin' for the Bus (which seamlessly blends into) Jesus Just Left Chicago La Grange

Always forget how long they have been around. Enjoyed listening to the album as opposed to the greatest hits we normally hear.

Not much of a ZZ top fan, honestly did not like it that much, la grange is fire tho.

Straight forward rock, a haw haw haw haw haw

zz mid

ZZ more like zzzzz Garfield ponedjeljak, jk enjoyable su al nis preekstra.

Love the older ZZ Top. Some great blues sounds here that arent so poppy.

guitar

The guitar was the main draw of the album. Very strong instrumentals with middling vocals. Still worth it.

Listening to this again, it's honestly not bad blues rock. It's just that the lead singer tries way too hard to sound Black.

This was okay. I didn't recognize many of the song, I really new and like La Grange, but didn't realize that they were the ones that did it. Enjoyed it alright, but this style of music isn't something I generally gravitate to.

A lot of ups and down here. They are certainly the kings of southern boogie rock, and write perfectly portioned 3 1/2 minute grooves. That’s great because I don’t think I could listen to much more of each one. “La Grange” is the famous standout (although Phish often covers “Jesus Just Left Chicago” in concert) and establishes their guitar-on-the-upbeat Texas style. His solos were annoying though. Whiny, high-pitched screeches that made me skip the songs often. This album shows them at their “youthful rough” stage before they went on to more radio-friendly rock with “Eliminator.”

ZZ Top is a raunchy group of men from Texas making pretty decent blues-based music. I don’t like Elon Musk, I don’t like football, and I don’t really like Texas and most things that it embodies. Turning a blind eye to the raunchiness and Texasness of ZZ Top, the music is ok, especially when focusing on their blues rock. Few standouts on Tres Hombres other than the overplayed classic “La Grange.” I did enjoy this album more than I thought, good for three stars.

As blues rock goes this is pretty decent. There wasnt really any stand out tracks and it mostly faded into background music for me. I enjoyed it but didnt save any songs to a playlist. 3.5 stars

Pretty solid overall - 7/10

This was fine but everything kinda blends together... 6/10

5/10 - It was fine. Nothing necessarily stood out to me, I have heard La Grange and its fine.

6.5/10 decent, la grange is good, the rest is just kinda whatever, didn’t hate any of it though

also solid 6.5/10

Not memorable. But it was fine

Better than expected. Interesting style variations - I knew La Grange, but wasn’t expecting good blues too. Notable tracks include Waitin’ for the Bus, Jesus Just Left Chicago, and La Grange. I’d give this a 3.75.

Unfortunately these reviews are getting a bit repetetive. As this is yet another album that while not bad does not contain anything memorable. So another 3 stars. (actually I am writing this as I am listening to the next album which promises to be more interresting)

Solid expectation meeter.

Not bad. Just not really something I cared for too much.

Bit too dad rock for me. Wasn't bad but wasn't great either.

Better than their 80s albums Proper roadhouse music

Still uninspired

Crap singing but white dudes

Bra straight forward blues / southern rock. Bästa låten Hot, Blue and Righteous

Godsamme ZZ Top. Precious and Grace). Highlights Move me on Down the Line

not my jam

Best lache maar niet bijzonder top. Vond wat Spotify me automatisch gaf na het album leuker

Ok ok soso

Sounds like American beer

ZZ Top! A har-har-har! Let’s go dusty Texas blues rock band. What do I have ahead? Well, I can say that the song titles are pretty stellar. Don’t disappoint me, ZZ! Waitin’ for the Bus - holy smokes! This have mercy song is a ZZ Top song? Shut the front door. Like it. 3/5 Jesus Just Left Chicago - OMG I know this song too! I’m getting goose bumps. I’m such sucker for these types of blues rock vibes. 4/5 Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers - this is a good little ditty. Something is telling me I should be drinking. You better like some kickass guitar solos, cause the song is like 50% kickass guitar solos. 3/5 Master of Sparks - ooh groovy like Ash from Evil Dead groovy. This album is pretty solid so far. 3/5 Hot, Blue and Righteous - ballad time. Eh, whatever. It’s fine. 2/5 Move Me On Down The Line - Everybody sings on this album I guess. This is a fine rocker. Nice thing is you get the song 100% by the time you get to the 30 sec mark. There’s some efficiency there. 2/5 Precious and Grace - Love that funk groove, it derails a bit at the guitar solo, but pulls back. 2/5 La Grange - songs at this level of fame are in a sweet spot. They play it enough that everyone knows it, but they never over play it. It’s got such a good riff that drives the whole thing, and the guitar solos have so much character. I mean it’s pretty much flawless blues rock song. 5/5 Sheik - Another eh. Fun but nothing special. Kinda tuned out by the end. 2/5 Have You Heard? - this sounds like a blues gospel song. They’re bringing it at the end. Not quite a 3/5 though. 2/5 Alright! A pretty solid blues rock album. It’s got good concise songwriting, awesome guitar solos, and a rasp dusty west Texas biker bar feel. I saw someone was averaging their song scores for an album’s overall score. That’s 28 / 10 = 2.8, which rounds up to 3/5.

Yeah, it’s alright! Pretty fun
