Okay! Didn't love it but didn't hate it either

It had it's moments, although the length of those tracks is ridiculous. Time killers with no real uniqueness throughout. 2.5/5

The songs can be pretty good in the right mood, but they can also often be incredibly boring. The instruments are playing some pretty interesting stuff, but they sometimes stretch and meander for too long. Isaac Hayes definitely had a very unique voice, but it also gets pretty damn boring. Especially for the spoken word section. So, this one really depends on mood.

Far out,a couple of massively long covers

Smooth R&B

Enjoyable but not my thing. Walk on by a highlight.

Pretty good, but will not be listening too again. Some sections were a lot of no song

Really nice soul music; however, the long songs overstay their welcome, and the song By The Time I Get To Phoenix starts off rather boring but does get better around halfway in. Standout track: One Woman

Solid, title is apt

3.5 stars. One of the best conclusions to an album I've come across. The long slow "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" builds to a lovely instrumental outro. Other than that a good if not overly-memorable soul album that was a landmark in it's time but I won't necessarily re-visit.

Kind of a weird album. I didn't much care for it.

I’ve never really listed to Issac Hayes other than shaft I knew him from chef on South Park. I like this album as a concept. The songs are a bit long, but I understand the reasoning for it. I do tend to start drifting off when trying to listen to just music for that long I did recognize a song on here which was a pleasant surprise. This album isn’t slated to be one of my all-time favorites, but I definitely would give it another listen.

más como un 3.5. me encantó como música ambiental

It's good

This was probably the most modern 60s album I've ever listened to. Although the songs are pretty long, the music all feels like a bunch of different songs which I can appreciate. I can't see myself going back to this one much though.

Suck on my chocolate salty balls! Put em in your mouth and suck em! Oh, wait, I guess that’s not on this album.

not bad but not for me

podcast é

I've admired Isaac Hayes for years, and "Joy" is in my Top Ten.,.. but this album Yeuch. The two singles...great. Five stars each. The extended version add nothing but filler or rambling rubbish. One or two stars at best One of those rare occasions where I'd advise sticking with a Greatest Hits compilation

4 songs ...1 instrumental and 2 alternative versions plus an interview. Hard to get an opinion on this singer who seems to talk through most of the tunes.

Very good. 3.5

I enjoyed parts of all the songs, but also found myself bored in most of them. Unlikely to listen to it again off my own accord, but I wouldn’t rule it out completely. Would give 2.5 if I could

Melhores músicas: Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic, 9 minutos finais de By the Time I Get to Phoenix. Piores músicas: N/A 3.5/5

Exceptionally good production, way ahead of its time and beautiful timbres but i found the talking sections a little bit boring

this would be a 4 if he didn’t yap for 8 minutes in one of the songs

#336. This album is good, but damn these songs drag on too long. I think all of them could have been better if they were half length or shorter. 3/5: acceptable

Neljän kappaleen levy, mutta jokainen kappale tarjosi jotain. Herkkää ja hidasra, mutta myös funkkia ja tosi filmaattista. Parhaat: Walk On By, Hyperbolicsyllablevittujotain :D

Some good ol- soul. Can't really go wrong. Still, its not really an album to listen to on its own. Its got its moments, but its more of a background piece. Might listen again if I got a lot of work to do.

The first couple of songs were great, but I really couldn't stand "By the Time I Get to Phoenix". I listened to the deluxe version, which included the single version of this song. What I don't get is, they cut 12 minutes of monologue from the single version, and I have no idea what was missing; there was still an obscenely long monologue at the start of the song. Once the song started, it was fine; but the song still just invalidates the album as a standalone thing I'd want to listen to.

Really enjoyed the two first tracks, then it really fell off.

Hello children! Here’s one of my albums before I became your chef.

The 18 minute song in the middle of the album is NOT COOL

01) Walk On By - 7,5 02) Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic - 7,0 03) One Woman - 7,5 04) By the Time I Get to Phoenix - 5,5 TOTAL: 6,88 (69/100) Current ranking: 194/277 Nine minutes of this last song is pure bullshit. If the song ever starts, it will be rated significantly lower. "Walk On By" could also have been shorter, but at least there wasn't ten minutes of talking at the beginning. An album with 4 songs shouldn't even be called an album.

Walk on by is so good!!!

Alright

One of the interesting things about the 70s is how there seemed to be more freedom in what songs could be. I mean, yeah, "hit" singles had to be about 3 or 4 minutes. But then you have the albums that seemed to be a lot more experimental about song lengths. Which brings us to "Hot Buttered Soul". Isaac Hayes seemed to have a lot of freedom here to record what he wanted. But that isn't always a great thing. I felt the opening and closing songs were WAY too long. A 12-minute interpretation of "Walk On By"? No wonder they came out with a single edit. Someone needed to let him know that shorter can be better. And "By The Time I Get To Phoenix"... I felt the whole opening bit is something that works live. But in the studio it just felt like padding. I did like "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalmystic", and the length was just fine for it. "One Woman" was a little over the top, but that's not always bad. But when two of the four songs overstay their welcome, that's a problem. Top tracks: "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalmystic"

Chef is cooking here, this is a very soulful, funky, and seductive album. It's not really one I think I would come back to, as the songs are not very digestible on their own. Hyperbolicsyllabilicsesquedalymystic is the song that best stands on its own, and even that one is 9.5 mins. Overall, good album but not my favorite soul I've had on this list.

Another album well worth a listen and certainly doing some experimentation, but also rather flawed: lyrics in particular still stick to a certain kind of sentimentality that I find annoyingly inauthentic. Still, some amazing creativity going on.

Man, they don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Really, people literally do not make albums like this now. Storytelling soul is gone.indeed, I think soul music is gone, atomized into R&B, HipHop, Funk, even Singer-Songwriter, molecules-to-the-universe-gone-but-not-forgotten gone. I don’t necessarily love the music, but I long for the time and the sociocultural context that welcomed this music. When I complete my Time Machine, it’s the 70s or bust…

I like the layers of the music that are going on here.

2.5 Walk on by is a burner. Album is a bit short and lacks variety

More enjoyable than the Shaft album. Was able to get lost in the long grooves.

This album is cool as shit. Loved listening to it. Obsessed with the title. The songs are too long (aside from One Woman, which was my clear favorite). By The Time I Get To Phoenix takes WAY too long to get going. The end rules, but it's so much preamble.

it has some good moments but what it boils down to is that no song needs to be 18 minutes long. especially the most boring song on the album.

Zu lahm, zu ausufernd. Schade. ***

Got through this one by singing Simultaneous by Chef over the first eight and half minutes of By the Time I Get to Phoenix

sound funk

It was soothing but nothing too remarkable

Walk on by is such a classic sample, I never even knew this was the original record. Honestly this album was so good until the last song, which dragged on with making random noises. I'd give this a 4 if it wasn't for the last song (which ironically is a quarter of the whole album) being such a letdown. First 3 songs rock though and this album is definitely worth a listen.

Enjoyed this, but definitely not as much as the last one. It's so laid back and self-indulgent, groovy, sensual, funky. Very smooth. That said, it's too much really, a 48 minute album split into 4 is very rarely going to be tight enough to get a properly good score, and this is no exception. Single edits (the bonus tracks I think for this) are much better really. 3/5.

Ta bueno, storytelling en su maxima expresion.

Enjoyed this more than I expected when it first started

This was pretty nice.

Could use less of Hayes talking about himself

Really liked Walk on By very nice arrangement. Tracks 2 and 3 were OK, was looking forward to By the Time I Get to Phoenix but was disapointed as half the track is talk but the song was well done.

Jerome McElroy, often referred to as "The Chef" or simply "Chef", is a recurring fictional character on the Comedy Central series South Park who was voiced by Isaac Hayes.

Not my bag but objectively good music. But putting an interview with yourself on your album is mad.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

Cool, funky, soulful. A little short, but overall very nice. Three stars.

Nice instrumentation but the solos were a bit long and boring

drums are fully in the pocket here but the long talking bouts bring this album down for me

Smooth, but not sure it needed that big spoken word spiel before the last track.

I liked the first 3 songs a lot, but "by the time I get tp phoenix" at 18 minutes long is a little much as half of it is talking.. but the other three I liked.

Feels more like a soul instrumental album, but very well put together, but I feel could have been trimmed to something very tight 3.5*

It had some highs and some lows but definitely funky to the bone. I wish the song writing was better but musically it was superb.

Interessant, aber sehr lange Titel!

very good, but a little long. awesome hearing so many samples from some of my favorite hip hop artists.

Pretty neat! Jazzy with hiphopish linda fun weird blend

The Mahler of soul - very cool, wow those tracks are long though

Enjoyed it will listen again!

Soulful and heavy, only 4 songs but they show their weight. I’d put this on on a somewhat dreary day with good feelings. 2.8

This was fine

Was OK, intros far to long.

The groove is very real, just wish it had a little more than that going on for it

Yeah man

Chill album, lyssnade bara två låtar o dom var helt okej men lite långa o tråkiga

Najs låtar, kan vara fett med långa låtar men då tycker jag man ska ha några korta också Bästa låt: By the time I get to Phoenix

Longest collection of 4 tracks I've ever heard! Wild of me to think Hotel California was a long song -- this album's got a track That's nearly 20 minutes long. The first track is pretty nice for background noise, but does suffer from feeling too overstayed. Probably should have been more like 9-10 minutes than 12, but that just might be my personal preferences on long instrumental sections. One Woman is nice, has really good melody with solid background singers. Last track felt like a storytime session. Why is this called Hot Buttered Soul, though. Mr. Hayes, sir.... 😭

Funky soul

Soulful for sure. Wasn’t expecting all the storytelling. An interesting first listen.

Crispy

Put this on while getting work done. Overall was nice and relaxing/chill for working. Not a fan of the talking/story telling, just give me the music!

Not too familiar with Isaac Hayes, and was pleasantly surprised with how good this album is. Not my typical style of music, but I love and appreciate all the instrumentals.

love the voice, love the storytelling. don't love the excessive intro and instrumental sections, which just aren't that interesting to me. good vibes but a little too much unnecessary fat

I didn’t think I would like this but I did and would listen to this again. Walk on by was fantastic. Really good music Favourite song: walk on by Least favourite: all good songs Album artwork: great

This was okay, just a bit long.

First two songs are James. Last two songs are boring.

Definitely NOT a 2 despite what Luke says

I liked the first three tracks, but the last one is not for me.

Good album, was not in the mood for it tho

Meandering. I'd hate to be the bass player playing the same thing for 10 minutes. Otherwise good in the background

Great album

Sehr schöner Soul, das höre ich sehr gerne, vor allem auch wegen des Bläsersatzes und der Streicher. Das gibt einfach noch mal mehr Breite. Der Sprechteil ist nicht so stark.

Like the backing music, and the singing. The songs go on for too long for my taste, but an easy listen for the day. 3/5

3.5 stars. A pretty good soul album. I knew each song was gonna be long when I only saw 4 tracks. With that in mind, it's an easy ride through the album. "Walk on By" is pretty good

Didnt listen

Cool dude, but this one is too self indulgent. Stop staring in the mirror… play some music for your fans.

The music itself is full of good vibes. Smooth and relaxing with some good singing. Not a fan of the long breakdowns where Isaac is basically just talking with a simple beat in the background.

interesting album, only 4 tracks? smooth beats.

Good 70’s RB. “By the time I get to Phoenix” surprised me. Glen Campbell made it a hit in the 70’s but written by Jimmy Web (also wrote Witchata Limeman and Galviston).

You get just about everything you need to hear by the 7th minute of the first track

Fine fine but got kinda boring.

Some mildly interesting songs but not a particularly compelling total album.

Very soulful album

Lush funky arrangements that suffers from pacing issues that requires considerable patience. I say this as someone who routinely listens to tracks that can exceed 10 minutes by bands like Yes and Rush. 4 tracks with a duration of 45 minutes tells you all you need to know. Some of these tracks could have shined brighter had they been mixed down to single length versions, which after reading more about this album, sounds like what they eventually did. Not digging the spoken word intro, it should have been a separate track as a lead in to the song proper, so you could skip right to the song. Did not dig the lyrics of any of the songs, but the instrumentation was on point. Props to his arranger Johnny Allen. In my opinion "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" was the only song on the album that justified its length. I think the last track was probably inspired by envy over William Shatner's spoken word masterpiece album The Transformed Man that was released a couple of years earlier.

It was pleasant.

Great voice and something quite innovative for a soul record. The long songs wear a bit thin in the end though. Probably would've given a 4 but the nearly 10 minutes of talking before the last track is a waste of time, why did he put that on an album??

It’s good but that talking on the last track was too much. 2.75

It was okay, very soulful but a little boring imo

Soul is has a very high floor and a low ceiling. Hot Buttered Soul is a good album, very accessible, despite the 8.5 minute intro to By The Time I Got To Phoenix, that’s no doubt excessive but respect to Hayes for setting the stage. All I can ever think of with Soul is how smooth it is. This album is better than most 7.4/10

Hot buttered soul is an iconic album name. A classic soul/funky vibe, but my zoomer brain got bored and wanted it to move much faster. I recognized walk on by probably from one of the many songs that sampled it.

Interesting soul music, but not really my thing.

Increíble voz. Mucho más que que Shaft.

Good background. 1 familiar beat. 3

Decent. Mostly covers but his versions are unique with lots of great ad libs, and I actually enjoyed that monologue everyone's complaining about. Also, for some reason I though Al Bell was an AI up until tonight. Definitely relieved to find out he's a human being.

I don’t know quite what to make of this. I liked it. It wasn’t what I expected. It’s not something I’m going to sit down and listen to. I did actually like By The time I Get To Phoenix. Isaac Hayes.

Really enjoyed this one but the length of 3/4 songs is just too long. Two songs just become 10 minute jam sessions, which is fine, but Hayes as a solo artist, isn't writing his own much other than contributing to Hyperbolic. The fourth song is 8 minutes of spoken word poetry. Overall, I wanted to love this album but the length of the 4 songs just was too much.

Smoothness. Proper soul vibe

Did OK, not a bad album, but I'd rather listen to all the South Park Chef songs than this album again.

The first three songs are amazing. Just so good and funky. That last one drags on forever. I can't see myself throwing this album on again knowing that 20 minutes is waiting for me at the end. It would have been an easy 5 without that.

i really like the first song the rest were alright. sooo long.

What is this name bro

It's really enjoyable but holy fuck can these songs be a little shorter

Smoother than his head

It’s good but not for me. Not sure what was going on with that final track.

Damn, this dude got cheated on and was really sad about it. Some good grooves but it was mostly story telling.

J'aime beaucoup la soul, et celle-ci a clairement quelque chose de différent, de plus expérimental. 3,5

Isaac Hayes sat in despair. The album deadline was fast approaching, and he had a severe case of writers’ block, stuck with only four song ideas and a record label contract mandating at least 45 minutes of music. Suddenly, he had an idea.

Chef from south park

Great voice, great vibe. Not sure the monologue added much... could have had a couple more songs instead perhaps, Isaac? But good on him for doing his thing. 7 out of 10.

Mellow? Yes. Interesting? Yes. Self-indulgent? Yes.

Very relaxing. Enjoyed it

Nice n smooth Will I listen to again: 25%

Really enjoyed the funky instrumentals to start this off. By The Time I Get To Phoenix is an 18min track - maybe that made less of a difference when playing on vinyl, but it took me a few times to get through it playing digitally and not remembering where I had left off. I did like the groove, but I'm not rearing to relisten.

A whole lot going on. Great sound.

Really nice sounding but 4 tracks in 45 mins is insane and what was that weird rant on the last track

p183. 1969. 3 stars. Fabulous production, and one of the great soul voices on top form. Set against that are excessively long tracks - 12+ minute workout on "Walk On By" and a 9+ "intro" to "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". There is a reason there were single versions of both of these. When it's good, its very good indeed.

I only know Isaac Hayes from the Theme from Shaft, which is a brilliant song. So I was interested to hear this. There's only 4 songs on this album, running 45 minutes total. Prog-soul? Well, no, but there is a jazz feel for certain. The album kicks off with a 12+ minute cover of Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By" which had been a big hit for Dionne Warwick a few year earlier. Hayes does it justice, with a relaxed, soulful rendition. Solid but not really compelling. The mix here is a bit treble-y, the bass is a little down in the mix (for my tastes). "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" is a lot funkier, and nails the groove nicely. But may lose a bit for the odd title, which anchors the chorus. I guess it was cool in '69? At almost 10 minutes, though, it isn't exactly concise. "One Woman" is the shortest song on the album, but still over 5 minutes. This one doesn't do anything for me; a slow soulful ballad. "One woman is making my home / while the other woman is making me do wrong"... meh. "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" is an especially bold cover, given the iconic status of Glen Campbell's version, which was released just 2 years earlier. Haye's version tops 12 minutes, starting with a spoken section which builds a narrative explaining the meaning of the song. One note bass over a simple drum count. For 8 minutes and 45 seconds.... Now, this might be cool in a live settings, but not on an album. This is a significant detractor. Once he gets into the song, it rather drags. Maybe it is just that my expectations were so high, but this REALLY leaves me cold. Not bad, but not as good as I hoped. 3/5

I would have given this album a four if it wasn't for the same five minute spoken story within two songs.

songs too long

Pass, will listen on CD at some point

Shaft - Noch Fragen? Coole Stimme, coole Mucke, klingt nicht so verstaubt wie so viele Singer/Songwriter aus der Zeit. Und beim letzten Titel hätten auch 8min gereicht.

I feel bad giving this one a 3 but it didn't really connect with me. Isaac Hayes has a great voice with a lot emotion, and I thought the first song was really good. However, the other 3 songs just felt a little lacking specifically the instrumentations/arrangements. A lot of people are complaining about the length of the songs, but I felt they were fine. I think that the idea of this album or what this album represents is far greater than the actual songs on the album.

- Love "Walk On By" and Hayes's voice is indeed "Hot Buttered Soul" personified. - Why are all of these tracks so long? - Started to lose me with the rest of the album. Fun, but very prolonged.

This was a decent/fun listen. Also quite fascinating as he's a super interesting dude! Will hopefully check out more of his albums.

Ridiculous players on this album

Agradable.

2 bis 3

Not bad soul, but some tracks are a little long. I give this 3 stars.

At first I was bummed by the low track number on this album, then even more bummed when each song is 9-12 minutes. Isaac Hayes is great, dont get me wrong, but this was a slog to get through, no matter how sexy I felt.

Normally I really enjoy Isaac Hayes but this album was just boring. That cover of “By the time I get to Phoenix” was painful to sit through. If you’re only going to have 4 songs on your album at least make them interesting please

en stark trea. lite konstigt format med fyra långa låtar uppskattar jag inte. men generellt gött sound och rätt coolt att albumet är från 60-talet.

Det blir lite väl sliskigt och segt emellanåt men när det är bra är det riktigt bra.

There were parts I really liked and parts that dragged a bit. Fantastic voice. 3.

I love his voice. Instrumentals are awesome. Songs are way too long- punk music has killed my ability to listen to a song longer than 5 minutes.

soulful

Suuuper long songs. Every instrument is speaking through. Feels just like the title; a warm roll of bread.

Baerm, chica, chic; smooth as silk. Only knew of Issac because of Theme from Shaft, good to hear some of his other work. The setup for Phoenix is too long, other than that its all good (2.5*s)

Only really knew "Shaft" and Chef from Issac Hayes, so this should be a good listen. 4 songs for 45 minutes is crazy. I do kind of wish I hadn't been aware of Chef on South Park before hearing this as that is a bit of a distraction. Even so, the 12 minute opening track is great, has a good groove and build up. The second track with its crazy name is keeps on with the grove, and then the last is more spoken than a song. Overall it's a cool album and kind of fun to have same song for the full length of my commute. Favorite track: "Walk on By" 3/5

I can see why he doesn't have very many hits but is sampled in so many. An extra star for his contribution to Mommy Daddy sheet monster time

Story teller

This was okay, but strictly as background music. No way I could pay attention to an 18 minute song!

powerful album, felt like some of the sections are a bit overdrawn and self indulgent but man are there some awesome sections

Not bad, Isaac, not bad.

Couldn’t totally get into it, but not repulsed by it.

3 stars Good band, a little too soulful. His singing gets in the way of the grooving. Solid album though.

Good soul music, but not too exciting in the end.

it was okay i liked the firstsong a lot but six minutes into it i was ready foo move on to the next one. overall its a bop, but i dont nknow if i would go out of my way to listen to it again. im also so fucking drunk lmoooooooooo

Very good. 6.9. I enjoyed it a lot though it’s not my type of music. It was very soulful

I liked some of this and found some a bit odd. Gotta go with 3* since I wouldn't turn it off but I probably wouldn't seek it out.

Real good groove going on - timeless sound. Dragged on a bit for me with the spoken word, but when Isaac sings tis fantastic.

Nice horns, piano, and voice. The last song story telling could have been just a little shorter.

It was going to be a 4 until the last song. I had a more positive view of it because I played it without looking at how long the album was how many songs there were. The last song took forever to get to his point.

Eh. Didn't really love it. I mean I don't really care who the artist is (maybe with the exception of Eric Clapton or Hendrix) I don't want to listen to a song that's almost 20 minutes long, especially when half of it isn't even music it's just the artist telling a sad story about a broken relationship. Mr. Hayes has a nice voice and the first two songs were pretty good but I didn't love the second two on the album and the last one was about half the album's length so yeah. Not really my style, lyrically and in their subject matter the songs are very monochromatic.

I liked it. Flat.

Not my vibe I guess.

Great tracks. Maybe a little drawn out but still an enjoyable listen. High 3.

Started really well, but By the Time I get to Phoenix is not a particularly good song.

I enjoyed some of the songs.

Ein ruhiges und intensives Blues Album. Es eignet sich nach einem stressigen Tag als Entspannungs- oder Einschlafhilfe. Sauberes Werk ohne Höhen und Tiefen.

Schön souliges Album welches gefällt.

Funky stuff interspersed with lingering soliloquies. Fun as a concept and shimmering in spots.

A lot to like about this and something that I didn't know at all before today. Another pleasant surprise in that this album is 55 years old yet, to recycle a cliche, sounds fresh to me and has influenced a lot that I like, from Portishead to Labi Siffre. Probably won't be one I add to the regular rotation but I have enjoyed a couple of listens and certainly won't mind dabbling again in future. A very very strong 3.5!

I enjoyed the album way more than I thought I would. The long story was not my favorite....it could have been more tolerable without the drum.

I recognized a lot of samples from this album. Pretty fun listen overall.

Not the album from him I would've selected as just listen?! Some good grooves and beats that have been sampled plenty.

I never thought about it, but it makes sense that Chef had work outside of "chocolate salty balls" outside of South Park.

It’s fine. Fun listen, but probably won’t seek it out again. I’m just one of those people who can’t look past some flaws in the artist, and Scientology makes me queasy.

Not bad

Good for background

This was okay. I forgot that soul as a genre existed while I was listening to this, and was having a hard time trying to decipher what it was. This was typical 3 material for me: I neither liked nor disliked it.

I'm digging this one! Except the last track. Not my jam.

One woman es una mica pastelon, tirant a gospel

Weirdly short album but the songs are nice soul jams.

It had its ups and downs but it was pretty average for me

Solid album. Standout song: one woman

Show start. But brilliant musicianship.

That speed bump intro to "By the Time I Get To Phoenix" is a massive screeching halt to an otherwise nice soul album. Not great for me. Wildly overproduced. Removes me from the soul part of the soul.

Walk On By // One Woman // 3.5/5

I like this, but I like the music that Spotify played after even more.

It's hard to argue with the uniqueness of an Isaac Hayes R&B/Soul album. Four songs is a bit lean for a full album. Although minimalistic in terms of instrumental variety, this album highlights some clearly skilled musicians, more than Isaac himself. The spoken word style is in full form in By the Time I Get To Phoenix, by far the weakest on this album.

Nothing remarkable. A couple of good songs but mostly just average stuff.

Chef sings some trippy soul.

Didn’t actually listen to it but have been assured it’s good

Isaac Hayes has a very soulful voice. I liked the 'One Woman' song, not so much the other songs. By the time a get to Phoenix was more like a slow ballad. I'd need to listen to it several times to get the whole story. I do like Isaac's voice.

Ah man I was really hoping to get more into this. Great but not super exciting, not pulling me in. I'm going to revisit and maybe rerate but not in a hurry, sorry chef

This short list of songs packs some heat! You can hear the pain of longing for love in his voice. The last song takes you to church as you recognize the heartache of the story in the song.

Love the hammond organ on Walk On By. Too bad the first half of By The Time I Get To Phoenix was spoken word.

Defining himself. Good groove - kind of raw - tripping! Isaac Hayes is the man.

Isaac Hayes has never been a favourite of mine so I found listening to the album quite hard. He seems to have a tortured voice (compared to mine he is a genius though) I have given the album a 3 star simply because of this.

Instrumental, 4 nummers van 15 min ieder

First lets discuss the good things, Isaac Hayes has one of those voices that just draws you in. Hayes is so good at expressing tender love, heart break, sorrow and many of the other emotions typical of the funk genre. The length of each individual song isn't a problem for me as I listen to a lot of black metal with a lot of long songs. Instead what each song feels like is that I'm sitting in on a jam session. Isaac is definitely the star of the show of this album. Now lets discuss the bad parts of this album. Even though I didn't have any issue with the length of each of the four songs each song definitely could have been shorter as a few times I found myself wondering if the I had the album stuck on one spot. Over all the repetitiveness of some of the parts are minor problems when you are presented with the masterful singing that Hayes provides. I'm glad I got a chance to listen to an album by a singer that has either Directly or indirectly influenced a lot of music I listen to.

i like walk on by

Blind album and artist. Long funk soul tracks? Kinda cool but nothing spectacular to me. I liked that 1 song with that really long track title though.

It’s crazy how some music can really make you FEEL the time it came from. No confusing it with music of any other era. This is too meandering for me, but you have to appreciate Isaac’s ability to thoroughly create a mood. 3.0.

Decent album. Sounds like the transition between psychedelic 60s and progressive 70s. Only four tracks, so it works better in the background. Apparently a landmark of soul. I prefer the Shaft soundtrack. 3.4

I was caught off guard by the son lengths… However I thought it was a Beautiful album with a great beat

Yeah. Love his voice, love the musicianship etc but it’s a bit self indulgent. All the talky bits are unnecessary

Strong strong start with Walk on By! I was instantly hooked. I've never heard anything like By the Time I get to Phoenix, got a little bit lost in the storytelling, but enjoyed the soulful vibes nonetheless

Not bad from what i heard.

Mellow

Exactly what the title says.

This is a well curated soul album, that emphasises Issac's incredible voice. However, for me, the elongated verbal intro on 'by the time I get to Pheonix', the jazz overtones and psychadelic R&B make it a hard listen.

Not for me.

I liked it most when he didn't sing

Really solid soul/funk album. The riff on the second track is so funky. Was a little turned off by the lengthy talking intro of the final track, sort of unnecessary babbling to make the track 18 plus minutes, but overall this was an enjoyable spin that made me appreciate Hayes as more than just Chef from South Park.

Hello Children! Can't say I was expecting to hear Chef but I forgot he was a singer before joining South Park. I dont listen to a lot of soul music so I don't have much reference to compare it to, but I enjoyed the album. The instrumentals matched up with his voice very smoothly and the rhythms were very nice. Having only 4 songs but being 45 minutes long is different from most albums but I think it worked well here. The first half of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" was a bit slow but once he got going the song really cooked.

Good album. I enjoyed this one.

Smoooooth…

1. 3.5/5 2. 3/5 3. 2.5/5 4. 3.5/5 = 3.12

Started off strong but lost me half way through

Best saai maar prima 5.5/10

Better than it started. Still draws out, too much narrative, just hit it. Good for a rainy day. Soul that gets to some cool places but the songs are long and there aren't many.

I enjoyed it. The long form funk was a change and it allowed the whole thing to wash over me.

3 stars.

R&B/Soul from 1969. Haven’t heard of it, but a nice vibe right off the bat for a morning. 3/5 because not sure it’s a library thing yet.

This was trending towards a four or five star until the endless spoken word part of the fourth track. That song isn't particularly good compared to the rest either, and it's half the albums runtime.

Great grooves, songs are way too long for me.

- good soul music - 18 minute final song with a lot of spoken word is a tough listen

Great voice, but I’d rather hear him singing than talking. Sorry Chef.

Ну ок.

Walk on by was great but outstayed its welcome by 2 minutes. Really loved the opening, having 2 odd minutes without vocals was really cool, especially when you have such an incredible and iconic voice as Isaac Hayes. Quite like by the time I get to phoenix, might have to listen to that a few more times to form a full opinion. The rest of the album didn’t do much for me, but Issac Hayes voice is incredible

This is clearly a favorite album of hip-hop legends. I've heard samples of the first two songs in tracks from the Wu-Tang Clan, MF DOOM, and Public Enemy, to name only a few. The latter two tracks weren't as strong, though. 3.5 stars.

Incredible voice and instrumentals. Way too long. Might be better with an edible.

Hey Chef

Incredibly smooth and soulful. Isaac Hayes had such a deep, layered voice that flips that sexy switch on immediately. I can’t give this higher than a three though since it was literally four incredibly long songs, but that would lend itself well to making some funky babies.

At first I thought it was a modern day album. It really could have passed for one. It's exactly what it claimed to be.

Fun album. As a massive fan of Portishead, was a good surprise to hear the first song ‘Walk on by’ as the basis for roughly 3/4 Portishead songs. Great first song, however rest of the album failed to capture my attention in the same way. 3/5.

Shaft - a bit later

Lots of gems, but so much drawn out, long-winded waffle that doesn't feel like it's elaborating a point, more belabouring it.

These are some groovy jams.

I enjoyed this way more than I anticipated.

I like how Isaac Hayes took a classic Burt Bacharach song and made it his own. You have to admit, he had style.

Chef! First two tracks were not for me, but liked track three "One Woman" !

was kinda disappointed, maybe i’ll revisit

Pretty good soul music

Cromulent if mysoginistic

Isaac Hayes' "Hot Buttered Soul," released in 1969, is a bold experiment in soul music. This album, known for its extended, almost cinematic tracks, features Hayes' unmistakable deep, smooth voice and innovative production. While it showcases his artistic ambition and talent, some may find the lengthy compositions a bit indulgent, which can affect the album's accessibility. The reinvention of classic songs like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is notable, but it might not resonate with those seeking more traditional soul. "Hot Buttered Soul" is a daring departure from the norm, earning a middle-ground 3/5 rating for its audaciousness.

Solid chillausmusiikkia, tyydyttäviä sointukiertoja ja bassoääntä. Vähä liian pitkiä kappaleita lisättäviks soittolistoille :D

i listened 3 first songs of this album and i think it's good but not for me

Strengths: Hayes vocals and singing, and the overall sound and production. Weaknesses: Overly long and meandering, sentimental love songs.

Incredible vocals and lush instrumentation. Tracks are long and sometimes self indulgent. Overall this album has such a great vibe and remains a soul classic.

The music here is top notch, but the 10 minute wandering one-person conversation that occurs in the middle of the album really brings it down. My favorite track was walk on by, original version.

When's he gonna sing about his big brown chocolate balls? Kidding aside, chill stuff. Good for certain moods.

Mostly pretty cool. The songs build and build into these jazzy soul ballads. 6/10

Starts off strong with the first song, then loses momentum a little. By The Time I Get to Phoenix is way too long and a bit of a slog to get through. Overall, OK.

Heard before. It's okay. Long songs... but funky. I think I like By The Time I Get To Phoenix the most. But the album cover is iconic, I keep seeing it somehow.

Decent

i was all aboard until the spoken word piece. the good vibes were sort of canceled out by the lengths of some tracks and the bummer that was the spoken word components of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix"

Not my genre, but I can see why it made the list.

Interesting cover versions incorporating extended jams and spoken word.

Great soulful songwriting, vocals and instrumentals. Didn’t enjoy the storytelling bit, for subjective reasons (not my style).

Fine. Probably important for its time.

No me gustan las canciones que duran 18 minutos :(

Great voice and groovy tunes.

I’m not much of a 10 Minute Songs guy so this wasn’t super to my taste, but T Isaac clearly has a lot of talent and if you like this style of soul you’ll probably love this

nice but the harmonic sounds made my speakers vibrate

Ah yes such smooth jams. Point deduction for Scientology. https://youtu.be/ouy54KdNe2c?si=bvscziu0j2rDL97k

i know I am in the minority here but i am a sucker for a long song and consider the first two a huge win for the all 7+ minute song playlist i have in regular rotation however the third song lost me, and the almost nine minute approach for by the time i get to phoenix cover was a too much the top even for me. gotta go listen to the 2:42 glen campbell original instead.

I was initially wary because I'm not a big fan of long songs, but I enjoyed the opener a lot. The second was fine, I liked the third, and then the fourth felt like a man invited me to his home and put on a record I "had to listen to" and talked over it, for the first eight minutes. The back half was better but can't redeem the front half. 2.5 rounded up

Songs dragged, I the radio edits for a few songs and I liked them better than the full length ones

Smooth Jazzy + Soul

Soooooouuuuul

Agradable.

Enjoyed this one. The long version of "Phoenix" was a little much, but overall liked the groove of the album. 3.5/5 Would listen again

This is not the sort of Soul music that I remember, this is Progressive Soul, Psychedelic Soul, possibly even Soul Jazz. There's no doubt in my mind that Isaac Hayes was a genius, but I'm not sure if this album is for me.

It’s fine. 4 songs, nothing really blew me away, but had a couple fun tracks.
