Reviews (page 4 of 11)

Conflicted. Good beats, good lines "I don't give a fuck, I wish I had an ass big enough for the world to kiss" but tons of casual misogyny and fat shaming.

All great

This album is still shocking to listen to today. Bonnie and Clyde 97 being the shocking highlight. Beyond the shock value, this is well rapped and well produced music that is easy to see why Eminem vaulted into super stardom. It is hard to emphasize how big Eminem was during this 1999-2004 stretch. Bonus: put on "I Got The.." by Labi Siffre at the 2:30 mark to hear the "My Name Is" sample.

Creative, shocking, engaging, poignant and authentic. Sure it may not be everyone's cup of tea, although the record sales would say otherwise, but you cannot deny that it is as original as it gets. It has some great tracks, some alright ones, but it is never boring. Just when you think Em might be about to go down a typical rapper's path - he flips it and says (over and over again) Fuck You.

Heard most/all these songs before but not sure I’ve ever listened to the album straight through. I was the demographic for Eminem’s rise, so nostalgia is influencing my rating.. but this hasn’t aged very well; that said, I can separate lyrics from reality, and so focus on the talent and production. 3.5/5 but need to decide to rate up or down still..

74/100.

Er flucht ziemlich viel, er ist ziemlich grausam, aber diese Musik ist so eingängig, der Beat ist so gut und es macht einfach nur Spaß. Schwanke zwischen drei und vier, aber ich runde mal auf.

This album is one of my favorite Eminem album. Some songs didn't age well though, but it remains a banger almost from front to back.

I’ve been a fan of Eminem since I was around 12, which, honestly, is about the level of maturity you need to be strong to wholly enjoy the album. Regardless, despite this not aging so well— and I’m not sure it’s supposed to— the skill is evident and the songs that last will last as far as I can tell

M&M as a pedo serial killer just works

Classic album with shocking, funny lyrics. Very clever! Will listen again for sure. Top song: ‘97 Bonnie & Clyde

Back when this kinda rap came off as authentic, raw, and fun. Now when Em tries to do it it just feels corny. This album just got something in it, idk how to explain it. Legendary nonetheless. 4/5

Eminems debut, have listened before and it's still just as good. It's interesting to hear young, angry eminem compared to his (sometimes) more introspective later albums. He punches in every direction while being hilarious and lyrically clever. Can't really find anything to complain about, but the album is not life-changing. 4/5.

Not Eminem's best album but the of the sound is visible. A lot of my teenage years involved this.

Date and juvenile and better than it has any damn right to be.

Great album from start to finish. This one had a clear impact on the genre

The absolute way this guy dismissively negates any way his music would have any influence on kids or society, or that his words could be hurtful to women or LGBTQ people. Starting with an incense PSA so you could point to it and say “See? See?! YOU’RE the monsters!” I mean. He gives the reason to not rape a girl as because she’s underage? Drugging her and doing it would be fine if she’s 18? I also can see the side of: “This is art, like it or not. It portrays things you don’t like, but it’s still powerful and well done.” Anyway…a conflicted 4 stars.

23/12/24 Not big in to rap, I rather detest it. This wasn't a bad album though.

This album spends a lot of time being edgy for being edgys sake but it is absolutely a milestone in the evolution of rap. It sounds dated in some ways (the immature lyrical content, the horror-core stuff that has sort of fallen out of favor in popular rap) but in terms of raw skill, Eminem was really just getting started here. It’s a look in to what would come when his themes evolved and he got more serious. With that said, there are serious themes in here too, but it’s the pure talent that makes it great. Nobody sounds like Eminem and it’s not because they don’t try. And even the goofy toilet humor has a layer of exacting skill that you can’t miss. This isn’t his best album but it’s maybe his most important. Remember when this came out everybody was trying to ride that line of what’s acceptable to say on tv/radio/etc. This pushed boundaries.

I'd only previous heard My Name is, Guilty Conscience and Role Model. I think you can see that he improved over time but there's genius and creativity in here. Background tracks are all simple and great allowing for the faming of his lyrics. Great stuff.

One of very few hip-hop albums, which I think are really worth listening to.

4/5 - solid album, major throwback

I mean... he's a great rapper, I just think his albums are about five to eight songs too long. But his talent is undeniable.

4 - so much west coast influence, also is this his debut, is an LP even an album?

Good but not my taste

As with most Eminem albums, the quality ranges from very high to very low. Overall though, it's a classic album for what it did for its time, it just doesn't really hold up in production quality and consistency to MMLP or The Eminem Show. For those who get offended at the lyrics or find them repulsive, that's often the point. Eminem has never truly held these viewpoints literally, they've always just been amplified through this made up persona Slim Shady. In the same way you can have characters in horror movies that do the unthinkable, or unreliable narrators in literature, Slim Shady is a horrific unreliable narrator that is strictly there for shock and entertainment. For some reason, people don't allow that same grace of character roleplay in the medium of music, but Eminem went there, because he just doesn't give a fuck. This album musically is closer to a 3/5, but I'll give it the extra 1 point as a middle finger to those who give this a 1.

I have heard a lot of opinions about Eminem, but I don't even care this was so fun to listen to. I think a lot of it was nostalgia, I listened to My Name Is like 30 times when I was a kid, but the lyrics are so random, beats are awesome, and man can he create an environment. I think some tracks were a little boring and it ran too long, but there is no way I can give this less than a 4. Fav Songs: My Name Is, Brain Damage, Just Don't Give a F

Not his best but not close to his worst

Outrageously fun, lyrically raw and messy but it adds to the storytelling. A real journey with peaks and troughs. Great. Standout song: My Name Is

Not his best but deserves to be here.

This sounded like a variety show. Eminem is a brilliant wordsmith. The violent and misogynistic themes of his work are distasteful. Using his young (toddler?) daughter in a song about killing his wife was over the top. I like the self reflective vibe of his lyrics. Just imagine what he could produce if he turned his mind away from crude forms of expression.

Quite the first album to put yourself on the map for Eminem. For a rap album, this is really solid stuff and set up one of the most tracked careers of the last 25 years. Definitely vulgar and hasn't aged the best on some of the lyrics but the production and flow is top notch. An enjoyable album that pushes the length issue I have with albums (I listened to this album split because of that) but all in all I enjoyed the album.

I don’t know why, but the grossness of this album doesn’t bother me as much as it did during The Marshall Mathers LP. Maybe it’s because this album feels more like he’s playing a character? Either way, I mostly just think it’s funny. Yes Eminem, I too would make the world suck my dick without a condom on while I’m on the john.

Raunchy comedy rap with clever lyrics. Rhythm is solid. Not a big rap fan but I enjoyed it.

Not his best album but a good reminder to how awesome Eminem was.

Great storytelling. Very smart, very edgy. Liked the conceptuality of it

Not listened to it yet but will do

Beginning of the album: Hi my name is Slim Shady 😀😀🌈🌈✌️✌️ End of album: I hate my wife I wanna kill her 🤬🤬💥💥💔💔

Another classic.

Excellent album

Heard before. Not his best, but pretty good still.

Maybe too high due to nostalgia

Would be 4

Uneven but some tracks are great 3.6

Definitely sticks with you

Horrifying And horrifyingly funny

I knew precisely one track from this. This is ridiculously well-produced and mixed. Everything is precisely where it needs to be and gets precisely the right attention in the mix. There are the lyrics, of course - honestly, I hear a lot of what is often interpreted as misogyny as an obvious dig at misogynists. But yeah, if this was the shit right now and my kid was listening to it, I'd probably be worried, too. That said, there are bits in the skits on this album where there isn't that much distance between the artist and his art. And there are also songs that aren't... That great. Still... Overall, and considering it's not my genre at all, and I hadn't listened to this before at all, it's still an excellent album, and and album that definitely belongs on this list.

8/10 I really like this album. I appreciate the writing and the production. 10-22-2024

Strong storytelling, great production, could have been shorter or included more features.

Not a rap fan, but this was fun.

Rapid fire, intelligent, vulgar and addictive

This dude seems upset.

Annoying that I didn’t get to listen as I always love Eminem so I will still rate it.

Can’t believe I have never listened to this album! Very intense, very clever and very funny in places, I enjoyed it a lot.

Bastante bueno y entretenido de escuchar, me hubiera gustado poder leer las letras pero no aparecen en spoty.

I remember this album being released. I bought a copy. I played it a lot. Everyone was playing it a lot. I still listen to it now and then. The funny thing is, though, that over time I have become a bit more critical. It's still very good, but there are too many weak tracks on there for my liking. If an album gets 5 stars it's because every track is good (or more 1 or 2 slightly weaker tracks). I'll go with 4 stars for that reason alone.

He says some crazy stuff, but the way he says it is great. Phenomenal flow, great beats. Some crazy lyrics

It’s certainly unique. Yes it’s shouty, yes it’s sweary, yes he’s pushing every limit to the extreme, but it’s good.

I remember the first time I heard the song My Name Is, I literally said out loud, "Oh my god, Dre, what are you doing?" Turns out, I was very, very wrong. Not only is the song an all time great, so ids the album AND the artist. Eminem gets a lot of ink for being a white rapper, but amongst all the unique things about this album, his race is nowhere near the most interesting, influential, or radical. I've really spent a lot of time trying to decide the ranking for this album. with 25+ years of hindsight, I can say that this album launched the career of an all-time great, a cultural and musical phenomenon, a genius lyricist without peer. On the other hand, the lyrics are no longer shocking and, in fact, can seem attention-seeking and cringy. I would give this a 4.5 if I could. I don't think it's his best album, and I do think that it tails off a bit in the second half. Up to this point I've tried to reserve 5 star reviews for only the most special of albums, and I don't think this one *quite* lives up to that.

Actually good listen rap

One that I listened to when I dropped. This was 5/5 on the school playground lol. I still really liked it. Just don’t give a f*** and As the World Turns are my standouts.

Can’t remember the last time I listened to it all the way through.

Great album. Held up really well for 25 years.

An iconic album, but confusing for me. When I first heard it I thought it was maybe a parody of rap because he made so many raspberries and goofy impressions. Eminem's voice is so high I also thought he had to be gay, but then all the lyrics never made sense and Dr Dre was on it. I had to re-listen to this album years later, only after hearing subsequent Eminem albums, to better appreciate it as an origin story and as an era marker in millennials' choke slam into adulthood.

Objectively not a GOAT, but it's such a touchstone of noughties culture (though released in 1999), and it's funny and over the top (and oddly endearing at this point). I have good memories with this album.

Hey, an album i've heard before! And I know i like it! Let's give it a re-listen. Public Service Announcement - Skit My Name Is - A fucking classic. Amazing track. Love the adlibs This will be the first album where I have a lot of songs saved. Great beat, great bars. Eminem is super charismatic and funny on this song (and the rest of the album) Guilty Conscience - Cool concept song, even though it gets a little fucked up haha. Love the trading bars with Dre. Another banger. (beat could be better) Brain Damage - Another great song. Love the varied deliveries when he plays different characters in the same song. Very effortless flow, cadence, and rhymes. Maybe the hook is a bit weak. Paul - Skit If I Had - Never been a big fan of the production on this track, but I still rock with the song as a whole. Really love how Em sounded in this era. '97 Bonnie & Clyde - Lol, you know this song. It's a "vibe" even though it's so messed up haha. Definitely not my favorite track, but still good. Instrumental is a bit basic. Bitch - Skit Role Model - One of my favorite songs off the album. Love the guitar on the instrumental, great bars, very memorable. Love how vicious he sounds on this one. Lounge - Skit My Fault - A super underrated cut imo. Really fun concept, the hook is corny sounding, but I still love it. Love the "im high too bitch, quit grabbing my t-shirt!" line Ken Kaniff - Skit Cum On Everybody - Lmao...I like this song, it's silly, but still goes hard, fun adlibs. Rock Bottom - never really liked this one. Don't care for the production/vibe of it. Just Don't Give A Fuck - Another solid track, great energy. Soap - Skit As The World Turns - Not my favorite, but definitely a good track. Funny lines, kinda bad hook. I'm Shady - I like the bass line on this beat a lot, and Eminem does his thing obviously. Bad Meets Evil - Nothing wrong with this song, but nothing amazing. I feel like Royce was really trying to be like Em on this one Still Don't Give A Fuck - Good track, good ender, nothing crazy though. Overall - Finally a good fucking album. I probably like MMLP more, but this is such a fun album. Maybe some of the production is a bit dated, but Eminem sounds so good.

Gotta take away a star for some of the stuff he says about women…

As much as he is an asshole, one can't deny that this is a great album

A landmark album for Eminem I'm sure. I knew a lot of the songs, but there were a few I didn't know. It's definitely his earlier work. Some of it feels very Street, but in his case, more trailer trash than hood. It's how a lot of his early music sounds to me. I feel very lethbridge listening to this lol.

Grew up listening to this album and is still one of the few rap albums I’ll still listen to along with his Marshall Mathers LP.

A couple are pretty corny, but honestly holds up better than I expected.

eminem is so funny. this album is deranged but also creatively brilliant. i miss this era of Eminem it was so fun.

This is funnier than I remember but also lots of horrible messages. People say it hasn’t aged well, but this was also intentionally shocking when it came out in 1999 (and remains so today). Slim Shady was always a goofy, immature, admittedly evil persona that Marshall Mathers created so that he could spew terrible shit in fantastically complex rhymes. The flow and the storytelling are still top notch, and Dr. Dre’s beats…*chef’s kiss*! 4⭐️

I go back a long way with this record and it is just how I remember it. The production quality is so on point with Dr. Dre at the helm, providing a channel for Em to flex his vocabulary and vocal arsenal. Eminem himself demonstrates the pain he's endured throughout his life while showcasing his raw talent on the mic. His content is vulgar, violent, witty, self-deprecating and outright unorthodox, all the more reason he stands out in an era where a sea of rappers are primarily talking about how great they are. I started with Eminem on his Slim Shady EP, which I think was better as it was more concise and just as gritty, but the LP gave him a much broader stage to show what he's capable of.

Iconic album, but some of these tracks are just rough and cringy to listen to

Wacky, fun, and dark. Skits can be hilarious at times.

Ok this is better than the Marshall Mathers LP. He’s still totally inappropriate and misogynistic, but it’s less angry/dark and just way more likable and lighthearted. Also like the early Dr. Dre appearances, and the overall creativity. Can’t help it, I’m a stan.

Zika, Zika, starts out strong then fades to similarity. My Name Is, Guilty Conscience, and Brain Damage make for a clever and comical threefer. Then it’s all ass kissin, dick suckin, and I don’t give a fuck. Cum On Everybody is best rap on the album (3.9*s)

When "My Name Is" came out I thought Eminem was a doing a parody on rap. It was pretty good but I couldn't take it seriously. Once I heard more songs like "Guilty Conscience" and "Rock Bottom" I started to recognize the skill and knew we had a one-of-a-kind MC here. I bought the MM LP 1st and later went back and got SS. Amazing he cranked out the duo in just over a year. This album has a lot of great ones that didn't get as much play on the radio. "Still Don't Give a Fuck" being my fave that sums up the album and his EMinence perfectly...3.95.

It''s a great album, very dark, but still holds up. I don't know if anyone would make an album like this today but I enjoyed listening. Would listen again

Please stand up

Really liked it, fucking dark and really gay too. Kinda got fed up with all the characters he’d play for each song with the voices and shit. Bonnie and Clyde was a stand out

I am a changed man. I used to agree with all of you. Eminem sucks, he’s too edgy, whatever. I used to hate Eminem’s popularity, until I actually listened to his music and… it’s not bad. In fact, he’s got some really good albums. Sure it’s ’misogynistic’ or ‘super edgy’ but I think that’s the point. This record tells a story. A story about a bad person. In fact, Marshall mentions many times that what he’s doing is wrong, ie. Guilty Conscience or Role Model. He knows he’s not someone to be looked up to and the record reflects that. The album cover literally has someone dead in the trunk of his car. You think he actually believes in murder? I don’t know man, until he actually commits some heinous acts I’m gonna chalk it up to a story being told. Isn’t that what good concept albums are for anyways? Whew, now time for the actual music. It’s pretty enjoyable. Eminem’s got the word play, the beats, flows, features etc. that prove his rise to fame was deserved. Many of these songs got the mainstream fun and catchiness to them while also committing to the edginess and sense of fear that drove Eminem’s career miles. As I said earlier, I love the story and the use of sounds to tell said story. It all makes for a great experience, albeit with a touch of lines that have not aged well. Overall, strong 4/5.

I tried to listen to this album in the past and gave up because of Guilty Conscience. I didn’t get the hype at the time. But seeing it all the way through, I get it, I enjoyed it. Slim Shady as a character is so absurd that it feels like he’s a parody of himself, but there’s also the songs that don’t have Slim as a character that are really heartfelt and honest it’s really a fascinating album.

Any time I spend a stretch of time with an Eminem album, I have a mix of reactions. I admire his technical skills (he’s one of the all time greats), I’m charmed by his delivery (he’s a fantastic entertainer), I laugh at a bunch of his punch lines and I cringe at just as many more. His lyrics range from playfully irreverent to “I can’t believe he said that” to genuinely despicable. It’s all part of the experience by design. His music demands your attention and requires a visceral reaction. Compared to its successor, “The Marshall Mather LP,” this album doesn’t have as many five-star classic tracks but it also doesn’t have as many of that album’s depressing low points. “The Slim Shady LP” is pretty consistently fun, with great hip-hop beats that tip their sound just enough into Eminem’s warped world.

I was hoping this album would be on the list after seeing The Marshall Mathers EP showing up earlier. "My Name Is" is one of the most important rap songs of all time in my opinion. Jokey rap has been done before, but Eminem is maybe one of the best actual true rappers who does this sound well. The comedic bits aren't crutches, they are additional colors to his solid base. Remove the comedy and you have rap that is still good. It's like if a talented jazz guitarist all of a sudden writes a song using really simple chords. The song would raise some eyebrows because jazz typically is defined by its complex chords, but if people saw it was written by "Talented Jazz Guitarist" they would naturally respect it. This song also did a great job at being a bridge for people to listen to rap who wouldn't otherwise give it the time of day. I love the storytelling and dare I call it "spoken word" parts, but it's hard to get in a groove with this album at times because these little comedic bits pop in so frequently and stop the music. It's like an ADHD nightmare where your attention is constantly being manically pulled away in different directions. For me this is a solid 4.5/5. "My Name Is" can't be championed enough as a modern classic, and there are a few other tracks that are very high quality, like "Guilty Conscience", "Role Model", and "Just Don't Give A Fuck". It's not quite enough for a 5 for me though.

The skits make it feel very 90s. Some good songs I hadn't heard here before.

My Name Is Guilty Conscience '97 Bonnie & Clyde Role Model Just Don't Give a Fuck

"The Slim Shady LP" is the second studio album by American Rapper Eminem. West Coast hip hop, G-funk and horrocore are the genres. That works for me. The album was produced Dr. Dre, Eminem and the Bass Brothers. The lyrics were written from the perspective of Eminem's alter ego. The album is known for its cartoonist depictions of violence and heavy use of profanity. Commercially, it hit #2 in the US and #10 in the UK and, critically, was well received. The album opens with "Public Service Announcement" and a guy sarcastically stating a disclaimer discussing the album's lyrical content. This goes right into the first single "My Name Is." A hip hop beat with Eminem repeating "My name is" and starting the whole horrorcore lyrical theme describing his background including "My Mom does more drugs than I do." Dr Dre and Eninem are the rappers in "Guest Conscience." They are the vouces of an angel and devil to a series of characters who are about to committ a variety of crimes. It based on the Animal House scene where Pinto is debating what to do with the passed out teenager. Well, in the song a gunshot ends the song, sllightly different than what Pinto did. '"97 Bonnie & Clyde" has a hip hop beat and chill melody. A chilling tale of Eminem convincing his daughter to help bury the body of her Mother and his wife. Interesting song. The second single "Role Model" has eerie music. He asks why do you want me to be your role model. He attempted to kill himself. He was on the Jerry Springer show. And, he does drugs. This album is all about Eminem, his lyrics and his rapping. The lyrics are clever and way over-the-top. They're riding way over the edge of anything decent and appropriate but that's what he wants. His rhymes and rapping are fantastic. The music is defintely West Coast hip hop...very chill. A classic hip hop album.

This is a tough one! On the one hand, he has an amazing talent, his ability to evoke emotion whilst telling stories and his creativity with his skits/concepts is pretty next level. On the other hand, the content is problematic and in this album in particular, very juvenile. I really love some of his later albums and I hope that they turn up on this list (but I doubt it). I’m giving this a 3.5 but rounding it up to 4 in celebration of his talent/art, not his obvious misogynistic homophobic and VERY Rapey personas.

Ah I really like this album. It's problematic in a lot of places sure. But it's some so absolutely bangers on it. My Name Is, Rock Bottom and Still Don't Give a Fuck is great. I bloody loved Eminem as a kid, starting with the Eminem Show when he got really big but I remember listening to all this when I was like 12, which seems quite weird when you properly listen to the lyrics.

several tracks were a favorite in college; not every song as enjoyable but good memories.

I’m torn here. It’s the entry album for him, but it’s just not that good. Other albums are significantly better

Easy to see here how he earned his reputation as controversial figure and one of the greatest rappers of all time. Some of the lyrics are immature and hard to take, but the rest is pretty solid especially when taken in context of his real life trauma and struggles. Definitely puts it all out there.

Tolles Album.

So glad I was able to get this one. Loved this album & has so much replayability unlike some of his others. Obviously listened to this before but gave me an excuse to listen again and im not complaining.

The debut album that started it all. It still holds up to this day and is a large reason why Eminem is still held in such high regard and considered to be among one of the greatest of all time

Not sure if this is the only album but in my mind, it can’t be with all the other good ones. Rounding to 4 but like I said, Em has so much more to offer in an album than this IMO.

How appropriate to revisit this album with the recent release of 'The Death of Slim Shady'. This one was the birth. A new sound, a new style of rap, Like any of the other times whites have stuck their noses into what was a predominantly black art form, you end up with something slightly different. Jazz becomes smooth jazz, Blues becomes Led Zeppelin, etc.. Where the Beastie Boys were more about a certain sound, Eminem boasts lyrical prowess and it shows. He can twist the words to tell a story or make a point. This record was the first taste by many.

The debut of the rap god! The personality of this album is great. Just like NWA, Eminem does not give a shit about saying PG lyrics. I mean one of the songs is about some guy getting rid of his ex-wife's body. It is truly unhinged and stands out among rap albums. The songs themselves are also really catchy despite being dark.

This one hit my life when I was in my mid teens and was a bit of a breath of fresh air at that time. Coming off the rap of the 90s focusing hard on the all or nothing attitude of gangsta rap, this hit with tight lyrics and beats and didn't need to be as serious. Are the lyrics silly at times? Absolutely, but that's ok, it handles it well. 4/5

Amazing album and era defining but there are too many duds to give it a 5

i never meant to give you mushrooms girl I never meant to take you to my world but now you’re sitting in the corner crying and now it’s my fault my fault

This album represents one of those transition moments. And his lyrics are about such awareness.

Excelentes sonidos, rapeo original. Se entiende mejor el fenómeno Eminem escuchando los inicios

My thoughts are so divided here... and that is probably the point.

Sounds so similar to Marshal Mathers LP. I get why mom wouldn’t let me listen to him.

I loved this when I was a young teenager and it’s still good, but part of that is because of nostalgia.

Was a lot softer than Marshall Mathers LP. Felt more adult.

To me, it’s the song that launched Napster (“my name is”), but really it’s the launch of a massive rap talent.

great album also own

My fault

Pretty good rap. Not my usual style, but I do have a few soft spots for Eminem. Some spots a bit repetitive (we get it, babe, you had a neck cutting thing back in the day, you give people STDs). Great storyteller, though, with an interesting character — even if the novelty of shock value sometimes falls short. There are better Eminem albums, but it’s still got a lot of skill. Brain Damage, My Name Is, and My Fault are probably my stand-outs.

Be still, my teenage heart

I know Slim Shady isn’t for everyone, but I love this album. Sure some of that is nostalgia, and he’s definitely improved as a lyricist on some of the newer albums, but the humor is already there. So many great tracks here, Cum On Everybody, Rock Bottom, Bad Meets Evil…

Loses steam toward the end but there's no denying this is a big classic. Probably the biggest album of 2000, at least from a popular culture perspective. Some beats got a bit old but mostly in a charming way, like Old Snoop Dogg albums or something.

A little bit too long, but left quite the mark in its time.

A true classic from 1999, so much memorable hip-hop lines and beats, with the master Dr. Dre at production. The Slim Shady LP loses a little energy and momentum at the end, but it's a hell of a ride anyway.

Da weal swim sadie. Cute. Loves

Hell yeah brothers

God this album is insane. It goes on a bit too long in my opinion, but it is so much fun to listen to.

Iconic debut album. A little bit silly in hindsight.

"The Slim Shady LP" is the opening salvo of Eminem's rap career. He has a lot to say and because of that the album tends to go a bit long, but it is also a credit with his sharp lyrical content. There are many really cringy moments on the album where the violence and lyrics are a bit too much. This album is somewhat timeless and still of its time. "My Name Is" is not quite a novelty song but seems to have been clearly written to get attention. Nothing wrong with that because Eminem had a lot to say here. The Marshall Mathers LP is a much stronger album because it is more focused and is a reaction to the Slim Shady LP. Really good album and I think it deserves a place in this book just because it was so original when it came out and is how Eminem burst on the scene.

Hardcore hip hop. I completely understand why this album, and Em, get a ton of hate. He has a, let's say, certain image he has been trying to keep alive that doesn't work anymore. If you can put yourself in the mindset of 1999, which is hard because I was like 1, then you may realize how inventive Marshall was for the time. Sure it's long and full of skits, what hip hop album at the time wasn't. But the perspective of his raps in certain songs, his vulgar but creative language, it's very special. And sometimes what he does is so simple but effective in lyrics, his attitude is palpable. I think this album deserves more praise, even if I don't think it's perfect. Probably will revisit. 4/5

When I first listened to this album a couple of years ago I really didn't think Eminem would be for me. I was shocked how much I enjoyed the album then and I am still slightly surprised when I revisit it and still have a blast! This album feels like a time capsule of a moment - listening to it you can see why it became a phenomenon and while it's yet to inspire me to check out more of Eminem's work it has earned a place among my favourites. Favourite Track: 97' Bonnie & Clyde.

Man, Eminem really hates women. It's hard to understate how much the guy's musical output is grounded in this real hatred for every single woman he can think of, real or imaginary- except for his daughter, whom he frequently positions as the one good person in the world. Intensely self-deprecating, very frequently funny, and fairly self-aware, with consistently good beats.... I'm gonna have to give this one a 4. Also, why is it impossible to find the original version of My Name Is on Spotify? Beginning to think I imagined the whole thing back in 7th grade.

Sumalumadumalumauasuminimahumanbutigotafoogalooga

Not near the heights of Marshall Mathers but still a lot of fun. Rating: 4.1

Eminem and his silly stories

Not my style but a good production

For me, this is not the best Eminem CD, as the second one is more polished. But this is damn good. Not despite, but because of its adolescent appeal. Later tracks seem a bit thin. But the energy, the uniqueness of the lyrics and twisting of delivery to make rhymes flow and color characters and situations is amazing. To this day, one of my favorite lyrics is the vocal sound representing the "kids" pondering which Spice Girl they would want to impregnate. I love this album, though it does not hit a 5 for me.

Bumping this score up by one point to attempt to offset the reviews that either hate hip-hop for no reason or misunderstand the point of the character of Slim Shady. Shoutout the Labi Siffre sample on My Name Is. Highlights are My Name Is, Guilty Conscience, Rock Bottom, and Still Don’t Give A Fuck.

Highlights: My Name Is, Guilty Conscience, Brain Damage, Still Don’t Give A Fuck

Not my typical genre but enjoyed it

A classic.

- an icon - listen, the lyrics are gruesome and disturbing - but his flow and word choice is what helped him stick even without the shocking content - I can see why he started outsourcing his choruses lmao

Classic.

Violent, cartoony. Full bore satire aimed at everyone including himself. Eminem was so edgy back then. I was still thrilled by certain passages on this recent re-listen. But with the passing of time, this album seems more Tex Avery than Texas Chainsaw massacre.

Lots of old favourites and some new ones. Admittedly, the slim shady schtick does get old after a while. But I did enjoy some of the songs I'd not heard before eg. Bonnie and Clyde

Very envelope-pushing lyrics and breakthrough in the rap scene using catchy west coast beats

Surprised by how I enjoyed this album. Not taking the lyrics too seriously helped, but definitely appreciate and acknowledge Eminem’s talents. Enjoyed it front to back.

Nunca habia escuchado el LP en verdad, and I gotta say its aight, a high 3 cuz of the rhymes and flow. No sabes que, a low 4 por como manejaba temas tan maquiavelicos y estupidos pero still made me bop my head.

Stupid fun with good rhymes and some content that has not aged well at all. Still worth listening with an understanding of the moment in time when this was created.

I really wanted to give this a 5/5, but my anti-cursing mind wouldn't let me.

Subject matter and language are disturbing, but part of the representative Culture. Interesting conceptual presentation.

a classic something we were not ready for.

I’m not into the horrorcore genre, but some of Eminem’s lyrics are pretty funny. His delivery is excellent and the backing music is solid.

It's hard to go back to this album. I was a different age when it was released. Now when I listen to it, I cringe. The shock humor isn't funny to me anymore and I just find myself thinking it's vulgar. Eminem is an amazing rapper, but it's hard to find this first album's subject matter and lyrics appealing.

I'm not tis huge Eminem fan nor do I listen to him constantly but this album is so nostalgic for me. I do like it. It's a classic hip-hop album now. I feel like a lot of rappers these days try to re-create their Slim Shady LP. was not successful

I enjoy the humor and have mixed feelings about the music. I like his flow, and that he is experimental, but the result doesn't always vibe with me very well. Still a brilliant piece of work!

4 star. I appreciate the skill, but I just don't resonate with the 90s edge

The GOAT

Great record. Especially when placed in the context of its time, what else was popular/prevalent. My only quibble is i think it is a touch too long and could have benefited from a lil trim.

A great rap album if not disturbing

Look, he's an angry elf but I think this album was solid. Some of it, specifically "Role Model" gave me the same feel as "Idol" by Hollywood Undead. It's the idea of are you sure you really want to be like me? Are you sure you want to be just like your favorite artist? I really appreciate it when artists do that and for Eminem to recognize that so early in his career is kinda astounding. Yes his music is violent and twisted but there's a point to it. He's throwing a lot of the stuff that culture already revels in and profits off of back into the mainstream's face. Maybe instead of everybody hating on Eminem, we should take a look around at our culture and try to change that. Then again, maybe he's just pissed off and none of this has a deeper meaning. I kinda like that it's not clear, it makes him more interesting.

What to say here that hasn’t already been said - it’s abundantly clear that Mathers is the unrivaled master of wordplay throughout this discography and especially on this LP, twisting rhymes and rhythms in unexpected ways. I almost had to stop working and just listen in fear I would miss out on the lyrical flow, the album near relentlessly wordy over its hour-long runtime. The beats could stand to have a bit more personality, but still suffice to give Eminem’s bars a solid platform to work on (and let’s be real, the production was never going to be the star of the show here). Per usual some lyrics have aged rather poorly, but overall this LP stands up to the test of time much better than some others in the Mathers discography and is still an absolute wonder to listen to.

I like his later stuff better than his earlier stuff. Like it’s still violent but it feels less raw? Still generally an Eminem fan though and this is his roots. 7.5/10

Brutal lyrics Master of his craft

Love a bit of eminem

The 🐐

Being completely honest this was my first full uncut listen of this album, 25 years later. Some of the stuff is pretty dark or violent yadda yadda but it is all so cartoony and over the top it just makes me laugh about anyone finding it offensive. There’s a lot of raw truth and real feelings in here too, some great writing and storytelling. It feels effortless and nothing sounds pretentious or falls flat, but at the same time it does show its age and while it has some good beats I feel like the music is the most dated and that’s where I find the most weakness here. I just don't feel like that holds up as well as the next LP or what I have heard of it, which is fine. It kinda sucks that having those demons of his was what made him produce a few good albums as he hasn’t really done much of note since the early 2000s. But good he seems to have put them down.

Bangers galore

Very relatable music. I also can’t figure out which Spice Girl I want to impregnate

Once you get over the shock of crassness, it’s a great album. Minimal notes other than I felt verbally assaulted

Going in, one of my favorites. Love the beats and the energy and ridiculousness of his lyrics, Although the main ding on this album is it’s probably a tough listen around non-Eminem fans so you can’t just throw it on in any situation. I Should also probably leave room to grow for MMLP

im 15 again

whose the real slim shady!

Eminem on every drug big pharma has to offer is on another level boys. SSLP is still one of the most iconic Hip-Hop records to this day, and one of the top 2 Eminem records ever. In an era when radio music was actually good, we get a plethora of “radio records” but also a ton of deep cut Hip-Hop gems. We all know about the classic hits of this album, so I’m going to refrain from going on about them. (Role model, my name is, guilty conscience, etc.) Rock Bottom has always been one of my favorite Hip Hop songs, Eminem putting his wordsmithing on full display, while also showing his vulnerable side- we also get a banger record with Royce Da 5’9 (a duo that NEVER disappoints) ‘97 Bonnie and Clyde and “If I had” are also absolute bangers, so check em out.

This is a 4.5 through and through but a great debut that would be topped by his next record. The wacky and fun use of skits and the ad lips and crazy bars. The crazy beats are so much fun I just don't give a fuck has this drone in the background that works so well and makes that song so fun to listen to. This is the slim shady moniker beginning and this thrash punk rapper that was not seen as a "Thug" Rapper allowing him to be accepted into the greater culture. Role model is such a good commentary on the way that hip hop was seen back then while being just a hype track. I can not give this a 5 cause Eminem show and MMLP have better production and have better moments. I will love this record though for the way the CD looks and how important it was! Favs were Guilty conscience- I love the video for this one too so silly and also like a core memory when i was kid Brain Damage Role model My Fault

This is another one of those undeniable artists. You can’t help but just watch slack-jawed at the sheer guts and skill on display here. Manages to make it look so easy, but it is not easy! Eminem’s flow has this whole logic to it that feels so natural, like it was just meant to come out that way, but it’s really really really hard to pull off. And as a character in his own world he’s kind of undeniable. Might not be your cup of tea, but you’re probably gonna start snorting laughing in spite of yourself at some of these skits, the ridiculous dark depraved violent masochistic humor on display here. Are we in on the joke? Is this a joke? Is this real life, is it all some kind of game of chicken, are we really seeing a self-proclaimed basket case fall deeper and deeper into the cycle? Who blinks first? Why am I laughing? Because it’s also hilarious. A point off for the overlong runtime, and the album kind of loses steam in the second half. Nearly gave it back for the brilliance of Dre’s productions here, which is really everything great about hip hop from this period. I mean, what more to say? It’s so great. 4/5

Very good, not necessarily my type though

The people were right! Kids shouldn’t be allowed to listen to this! That being said, and with the caveat that YES it’s sexist and homophobic and crude and vile - this rocks. I have never been an Eminem fan, never actually sat down with his music other than the hits, and while I think his albums eventually move away from this style - this is horrorcore! And I love horrorcore rap!

Not quite five stars for me, too many skit/gimmick moments, but quite an album

Too offensive language for my taste but an album full of energy and creativity

The music that set Eminem on the map

some good songs, a lot i didn’t really care for, i liked his humour on this album, especially on the song guilty conscience. was a good album overall, thought of giving it a 7.

This album still hits. Totally forgot this wasn’t his debut album.

He's an angry elf! Eminem comes out of the gates swinging with his typical lyrical bombardment, but focuses on intentionally disturbing, violent, and taboo topics. I always love Eminem's rapping style and flow, but his fury and irreverence on this record are more than a little unsettling. As a casual listener, I much prefer the refinement and "caged rage" feel of his later work, circa 8 Mile and beyond, then his open threats and absurd honesty in this initial album. The production, largely by Dr. Dre, is fire as always.

Lot of nostalgia wrapped up in this one. Love some classic Em. Album opens on a three song tear. My Name Is is a perfect introduction track with a catchy tromping beat and earworm of a hook. Guilty Conscience introduces Em as a storyteller making use of Dre and Em as opposing influences on someone's conscience. Dre being the voice of reason and Em being the bad influence. They go bar for bar each with undeniable flow and some of the funniest interplay I can think of. Brain Damage tells a grotesque story of Shady's youth getting bullied at school and home over a dusty drum and bass track with mandolin (or something like that) plucking in the background. '97 Bonnie & Clyde is yet another hip-hop classic that introduces us to the Kim/Em drama by way of a one-sided dialog to his infant daughter as he dumps Kim's body into a lake. All the while playing on the Grover Washington Jr. love song "Just the Two of Us" theme in the chorus. Role Model throws his tight inner rhyme schemes on display; the first bar alone is ridiculous. One of my favorites from this album. My Fault is a silly story of accidentally giving a girl too many mushrooms. Unreasonably catchy hook for how obnoxious it sounds; a silly song that honestly probably should have been cut in final edit. Just Don't Give A Fuck is a jam. Crazy beat centered around a super distorted squeal. Lyrics are pretty hilarious (something Em lost over the years). As The World Turns goes right back to Em's comfort zone. Slow droning bass with snappy snares, some record scratching, and some accenting strings. Bars for days on this one full of shock value; one of many where the lyrics just follow Shady around on his exploits. This was a hell of a debut album from Eminem. It runs a bit long and dips into the same sorts of techniques, but you can't deny the man's ability to write creative rhyme schemes nor his stamina. Crazy the amount of quality tracks on here for a rap album nearing the hour mark. This is a 4.5 in my mind that flirts with 5 territory.

Great album. Eminem is awesome. I feel like he deserves a lot of credit for pushing the line when we were younger and this is a good example of that. Some of these songs are crazy random gross shit but they are all lyrically genius and funny.

Just last week while snowboarding, at the top of one of the gondola's the lifties had a poll of who everyone's favorite hip-hop artist was and Eminem won. My Fault is such a wild ride of a song and story. I want to try some of these mushrooms except for the dying part. The skits are so ridiculous and hilarious on this album. Such a unique way of making an album. I liked how the album ends with 4 hardcore beat bangers. Shoutout to Royce Da 5'9" There better be more Eminem albums coming.

If you asked 12 year old me this would be a top 5 album of all time, but being a crusty 36 year old has dulled the shine. Gotta give credit for having such a strong debut, and its truly a product of the times it was produced. Lots of stuff didnt age well, but you cant deny the talent and work involved.

Eminem was nuts when he first debuted. Nothing like it at the time. Some great songs on here, along with some meh. Too long but still pretty great.

It’s really rough around the edges and a lot of the jokes aged like milk, but it’s still a good album. A great introduction to such an inspirational man in the genre

The Expanded Edition has some sick A Cappella. Other than that classic Eminem

Very fun stuff. Very trend setting.

Lyrically inventive cartoonist fun. Not to my personal taste, but you can't deny it's songwriting and production.

One of my favourite Eminem albums. Well producer, hard-hitting and often bizarre lyrics and funny skits.

So good

classic

I'm sort of conflicted on The Slim Shady LP because it's absolutely iconic, culturally huge, and has some outstanding work on it including maybe my favourite Eminem song in Rock Bottom, but trying to be objective, I definitely know I preferred the MMLP, and this also misses in some places. I'll get the bad out of the way first; the skits are all crap and always crap, Cum on Everybody might be the worst track on any Eminem album, I'm Shady and Bat Meets Evil are forgettable, My Fault is goofy and a waste of time. The rest is great though, you have that goofy Eminem (My Name Is, As The World Turns, Guilty Conscience, JDGAF), introspective Eminem (my favourite face of his, Rock Bottom is said favourite track, but If I Had and SDGAF are all top top pieces of work, full of heart and soul and pathos and as genuine as they come), and edgy/scary Eminem (97B&C), all of which mesh together on all of his best works in just the right harmony, but it does sometimes feel like he's at his best when he cuts out the goofy/scary stuff and just delivers from the heart. Hard to really criticise that though because he's made a legendary career out of the mix, some of the goofiest tracks are his most famous, and this is the album that started it all. Don't feel I could give it less than a 4 but I can't go 5 because MMLP is an automatic 5/5, and this falls short by comparison.

Eminem is the greatest lyricist of all time, add in Dre’s beats and unrelenting rage and you have yourself an incredible album, and it’s not even his masterpiece. I got that many will not enjoy this, even hate it so to the violence, misogyny etc…. But you realize it’s not real right? Like he doesn’t actually kill Kim on his record. The fact people feel that way is the point he is often making, if you’ve had a nice, easy good life, you can never understand him. Slim Shady LP suffers from the same issue many great hip hop albums do, it’s slightly too long. 8.9/10

Every song is like "My mom is a fat bitch so I cut off her vagina and put it in the oven for 75 minutes at 400°. Then I did some mushrooms and dipped my balls in the cotton candy machine."

Great album although if you listened to some of these tracks for the first time today you wouldn't help but cringe a little. 4/5

J’aime Eminem, je trouve qu’il a énormément de talent, mais c’est vraiment difficile de faire abstraction de toute la misogynie. Je salue son album, mais je ne l’écouterais pas par moi-même

this is one of the few rap albums that hits all of the right chords. I'm not a fan of skits on albums, but Eminem makes them work. Hit-wise, this album doesn't have a lot, but it shines in its prouction. Dr Dre lets Em drive the ship and thats pretty rare for a producer - to sit back and let the talent take control. 4/5.

Angst and anger. Or should that be anger and angst? Loads of potty mouth, which could be cool, or not. Is that how I was as a teen? Using colourful language to get a message across? Certainly made for an interesting hour or so. Apart from 'My name is', there were no stand out tracks but the album is just great. It opened my 57 year old eyes to 'proper' rap. Gritty, tough and yup, street. A fascinating genre that I can't pretend to understand but completely enjoy. A landmark album.

I liked the energy and sarcastic vibe of this album. The first song is a legend.

There are some amazing songs on this record like My Name Is, Guilty Conscience, Brain Damage, Role Model, Rock Bottom, Just Don't Give A Fuck, Bad Meets Evil, Still Don't Give. there are some bad points to the album though like the skits which don't really add to the album and some of the songs feel very much like filler.

Decent record

The tracks hold up surprisingly well. A bit on the violent, women-hating side, but great flows and the beats are good. I knew the big hitters, but My Fault and As The World Turns were my under-the-radar favourites. The skits are terrible though, and add nothing.

Cultural phenomenon. Hadn't listened through before...some dark stuff in here. The real shady. I enjoyed it.

Good storytelling. I am no hip hop aficionado, but it seems well made and mixed for its time. It may have emotional impact that is lost with the overproduction of more modern albums.

Discazo

Not the best of Eminem, but a very strong start for his career none the less. (maybe too many skits / non music stuff on the album)

Violent as hell, but good.

He's a damn good rapper, and this is a great first album but I think it's a little repetitive, and a lot of the songs have that same Dre G funk production. His next few albums definitely were better.

Man I used to love this album! Crazy I was listing to this on my portable CD player in like 7th grade at chrisitan school. He really said some insane stuff on this album.

- My Name Is - Brain Damage - If I Had - '97 Bonnie & Clyde - My Fault - Cum On Everybody - Rock Bottom - Still Don't Give A Fuck

Of course I got this right after claiming Tim Buckley is a misogynyst. This is a super album, definitely music-as-art and whilst it clearly caused a stir and the debate about whether Eminem is a genius, or a sheep-in-wolfs-clothing still rages 10+ years later. I can't quite articulate why, but the 'hate' on this record is worlds away from the bad vibes I got from Tim. Eminem's controversy has always had a manufactured-film over it that I think makes it much more tongue-in-cheek, rather than an impassioned rage. Anyway, this is a good album - considering it's his sophomore it's amazing to think that this was amongst some of the first things he'd put out. Easy peasy 4 stars, reserving that fifth one for Encore!

A watershed hip-hop album. Good stuff. 4.5 stars.

Buenisimo! Top 3 1. If I had 2. Rock Bottom 3. Still don´t give a Fuck Mención especial: Guilty Conscience.

holy shit the guy from Fortnite made an album most the songs on this LP are awesome, but there are some I can't listen to though (skits excluded of course)

i'm going to be a bit more objective on this review than usual. much like an actor may play a racist role in a movie and people wouldn't see them as a racist, eminem here is playing the character of slim shady. the album is offensive on purpose hence why people think this album aged like milk. yet i can see that this is what rappers used to sing about and eminem brought to light the atrocities i suppose. very nice rhymes and lyric craft but i've seen better implementations of melody in this type of music so can't give it a 5 star rating.

I always feel teleported into a Micky Mouse Movie that is NSFW, I have no further explanation. Highly entertaining!

Great introduction to Eminem, listened to singles by his for a while, but the spoken story telling is really fun here.3.9

For a debut it was bold. Just to mark his existence and introduce himself.

First time I ever heard music like this back in early 2000s. Listening on a Walkman. Thinking "I never knew music could be like this." That intro into My Name Is. Wow.

I've always considered Eminem as a person who always speaks his mind and tells things that sometimes I wanted to say but I'm too much of a pussy to do so. Still think that The Eminem Show is his magnus opus where he reaches his ultimate form. Nevertheless this album is of course very good.

MM LP is better

Egentligen en 3,5 kanske eftersom de inte de bästa låtarna av eminem men de är för lågt att ge en 3:a

I really liked this album. But I don't feel the need to listen to more.

very good but not without me

Changed the face of LIFE ON EARTH

I still remember when My Name Is came out. Big. Eminem may be a sick, demented mofo and his lyrics can be a bit much but man they are also damn funny. Take 97 Bonnie & Clyde, a murder ballad about his baby mama written as if he was talking to his baby girl about it (\"Mama wants to show you how far she can float\" and \"There's a place called Heaven and a place called Hell. And a place called prison and a place called jail. And dada's probably on his way to all of them except one\"). As long as you can take his words as satire and fiction, you will laugh and you will be impressed with his wordplay. Public Service Announcement, Guilty Conscience, My Fault, and Bad Meets Evil are also super clever/witty. Dr. Dre also created some great beats on this album. That being said, it gets a bit repetitive in all of its F this and F that, F Kim, F my mom, F other celebrities. The album is longer than it needs to be and I think it would be even better if it was tighter. Still, it's a landmark rap album from a guy who said F it I'm just going to write what I want no matter how gory, abrasive, or offensive because it's just art. Like the Tarantino of music.

This is definitely my favorite Eminem album (though Marshall Mathers LP is good too). The Slim Shady character is so strong here and it makes so much sense for the songs to be that way. It has some of my favorite Eminem songs too, it's just a lot of (fucked up) fun.

Great hip hop album, a bit dated, but Eminem surely knows how to rap and create controversy. The production is slick.

An absolute classic that changed hip hop forever. A cultural shift happened when this album came out and it can't be understated how incredibly popular and edgy this was when it came out. A ton of fun with a lot of shocking lyrics and bars that you wouldn't get from anybody but Eminem. Does it age well in our "woke" world? Hell no but man is it fun if you don't take it seriously.

Can't believe this great album is 24 years old!

Смело, с юморком. Как будто издевается надо мной, но мне это нравится (вот это я мазохист, конечно). Но все же музыки здесь почти нет, это, скорее, альбом-прикол.

This is nuts. Eminem is a wordsmith, though, and these songs are so incredibly detailed. It's a pretty profane and insane album, but it's really well done, and I've enjoyed it more than quite a few other albums on the list so far.

Brutal and brilliant

geniuenly funny horrorcore rap

This just scrapes a 4, and that's based entirely off the hits being real bangers on this album. There's some real trash, 97 Bonnie and Clyde is particularly egregious, but guilty concious, my name is and role model are peak Eminem. I know there is a better album coming by Mr Mathers

Honestly I’d never listened to any of Eminem’s less well-known songs before. I thought this album was pretty great, not just for his flow and his way with words but also the stories themselves.

Surprising

Not heard this album in ages, still holds up.

quirky white guy but damn he can tell a story

The first leg is awesome. Really like Guilty Conscience - the bars are hilarious and I love the back-and-forth between Em and Dre. '97 Bonnie and Clyde is kind of obnoxious and edgy but not in a fun way. Role Model is hilarious. I always thought Eminem was annoying, but this might be the funniest rap album I've ever heard.

Great album. Could be the album for incels 20 years in advance. Just great songs

Great album with lots of classics. A little too many skits for my liking but at least they fit thematically.

Bastante fresco, me ha gustado bastante para ser el primero se nota que el man pilotaba y las bases las hacen makinas 4/5 (3.88)

I was really into Eminem when I was younger, but then I stopped listening to him because I just wasn't vibing with how angry his music was anymore. I haven't listened to this album all the way through in a long time. His talent as a rapper and a lyricist is evident, but some of his lyrics definitely haven't aged well. I also think some of his later albums are a lot stronger than this one. The Marshall Mathers LP is definitely his standout album, and you can see the roughness of this one in comparison to his later work. Still, his talent is evident, and there's no question this album should be on the list. My favorite songs now are "My Name Is," "If I Had," and "Just Don't Give a Fuck." I also forgot how many skits were on this album and how annoying they all are. At first I was listening to them just to get the full experience, but I skipped the last few because honestly they were all obnoxious and didn't add anything to the album. All that being said, I'm rating this a 4. I still don't vibe much with Eminem anymore, but the talent is evident and I'm trying to be objective. Plus "My Name Is" is still a banger to this day.

Classic Eminem record, I like this old-school hip hop. Often a clam story telling approach like '97 Bonnie and Clyde, but has way more energetic songs as well. A healthy mix that opens strong.

It's a lot more intense than I remember it being. The beat work on this is phenomenal. The lyrics are on point, but wow. I'd be surprised at any time if this came out.

Big M fan

Some bangers out the gate. Gets a little weak on side b.

Production is crazy, Dre did what he does. Flow is amazing but some of the lyrics are too over the top and annoying at times, and the skits are annoying and add nothing deserves a 4.5.

- already listened to this album before, maybe not all the way through though - definitely got some rapping bangers, that I still listen to today - concept and skits paint a pretty good picture - some of the songs are so graphic I’d literally never listen to them though lol

I should have not listened to this album so young.

A lot of parts don’t hold up, I probably wouldn’t like it if this was my first listen.

Eminem good 👍

Crazy how good Eminem’s raps are on this. A little inconsistent as far as quality goes and sometimes comes across as “edgy”. Still, some 5-star songs on here

Definitely a classic but with lyrics that won't age well?

Great beats, amazing rhymes. Lyrics range from completely over-the-top to deep and meaningful. I didn’t know that Eminem had songs like Rock Bottom, but I have a new appreciation now that I know he doesn’t just do meme-y songs.

Influence drips from this album

While I think MM is a genius, and one of Detroit's finest, this is my least favorite album. Many of the songs you probably haven't heard, and geared for an angry 15yo. Chose to listen to hit top hits, and he is a rap god.

Definitely some nostalgia involved but the first few Eminem albums just hit so hard. From a technical perspective, he's one of the best rappers in the game in my opinion. I also really appreciate how he helped normalize white rappers. Some parts of this are definitely 90s edgy and have aged really poorly but I can still appreciate it as a product of its time.

I forgot how much I enjoyed this album, must've been 20 years since I last listened!

Classic from Eminem

Classic

When we discuss movies that portray graphic violence, we are generally willing to accept it if it's critical to the plot or character development. We understand that it sometimes plays an important role in what's ultimately a great piece of art. Personally, I'm not at all a fan of -gratuitous- violence; but that's not what this album is. Every rhyme has a purpose, even if that purpose was to shock, and sometimes, sadden. This was a disruptive and interesting album that we couldn't look away from when it was released. It deserves it's credit.

The music is rough, violent, prone to homophobic and misogynistic lyrics, and the character of Eminem can be kind of a dick. But I think man creating it is brilliant, and he does an incredible job of shining a light on themes of poverty, violent personalities, drug use, and the vast differences of the socio-economic tiers in modern American society and how that shapes people's lives. If you look at this like a horror movie, no one hates Stephen King or Jordan Peele for writing the things they do and depicting them on screen, so I'll never understand why that's not okay in the music world, too.

Much better then I remember

Removing it from the social context, this is a good album. Em’s rhymes and flow are fantastic, the storytelling is impressive and it’s funny, like really funny. It does sag a little in the last quarter, but ends on a high with Bad Meets Evil and Still Don’t Give A Fuck. There should also probably have been less skits, most of them are pretty unmemorable. But the fact stands that the full songs are for the most part great. But, and this is quite a big but, this album was suggested a couple of days after the allegations against Russell Brand came out, and as such that context forced me to consider the role that women play in the album. It’s less obvious than in the Marshall Mathers LP, but it cannot be denied that the reality of violence against women is there. It’s uncomfortable. Even if the vast majority of the violence is cartoonish, akin to a horror film, when the darker stuff bubbles up to the surface it does feel like it comes from a place of genuine hatred. And it’s terrifying. And to say that to terrify is the point of the album is kinda missing the point of the criticism. It’s terrifying because of how real it is, and how close to the bone it cuts, rather than how much like fiction it is. As such, my rating is mixed. It’s a four, ignoring the social context and problematic stuff. Considering that, it has to be a one

Some great songs but the following album "The Marshall Mathers LP" is better. Both got the same problem and it's one song that we could really skip. On this one it's '97 Bonnie & Clyde and on the following album it's Kim. It drags the whole experience down a bit and feels dated. The rest though is mostly good. Eminem is so talented and with the production from Dr. Dre they're an unbeatable combo. I do think that the later works is more polished.

I think this kid is gonna go places. His schtick is a little too silly, but the darkness in his lyrics may go places. Perhaps if his next album was a bit more raw, dark and from the heart and had less of the silly rhymes and sound effects, he might find himself a true Rap God.

Slim was in his bag with this one. He was opening the door for vulgar rap. Crazy to think this was his first album he released.

Been years since I’ve listened to anything Eminem related, but it’s hard to overstate how big of an impact he made at the time. Even listening to this now, it’s crazy to hear how novel some of his stuff still sounds. His bread and butter early on was how usual it was to have such personal perspective in damn near every song, constantly flaunting thoughts and viewpoints most people would never dream of sharing with someone. There’s some things that haven’t aged well I suppose, but the most heinous ideas are often so absurd that I’m not sure how anyone ever took it so seriously at the time. His juvenile side was always the least appealing to me, but I think it works best here, at a time in his life when he was barely an adult himself. There’s a couple duds, it doesn’t quite have as many peaks as future releases, and the skits grow annoying on replays, but its hard to deny how this album still feels so unique and influential.

GEEN ROCK ALBUM?!?!?!? Ik kan mijn geluk nu even niet op. Moet zeggen dat het echt lang geleden is dat ik dit album heb geluisterd, dus de hype is hoog. My name is, is een classic. FAVO: My name is, If I had, '97 Bonnie & Clyde, Role Model,I'm Shady, Bad Meets Evil

Favorieten: Guilty Conscience, If I Had, Rock Bottom

Quite nice, enjoyed it. Added one of the songs in my good vibes playlist

Classic! Standouts: My Name Is, Guilty Conscience, '97 Bonnie & Clyde, My Fault, Just Don't Give a F&%$,

Banger of an album from em

Some unsavory lyrics, but it's nice to hear Eminem's origins

On one hand the man is so clearly gifted. But my god is he whack sometimes, and just too dark for my taste in places. But at the end of the day.... he's just so dang good at his job that I can't help but enjoy it.

This is undoubtedly a solid album on the whole - standout tracks include My Name Is, Guilty Conscience, and the harrowing '97 Bonnie & Clyde. Some of the lyrics across this record are truly disturbing, showcasing Eminem's ability to pull you into his horror-tinged world. Least favourite track - Cum On Everybody. Not a massive fan of the 'skit' tracks either.

Objectively: 5 Subjectively: 3 Overall: 4 Eminem has talent and it's not unfair to say he's one of the best rappers of all time. That being said, while the album has some great beats and he's a master of words, after the fourteenth or so mention of throat slitting or date-raping or poo poo or pee pee, it gets tiring. It's supposed to be offensive, and shocking, I understand that, and if you were a 16 year-old bullied kid back in the late 90s early 00s, this album would speak volumes to you. If that's your cup of tea, nice. Small sips for me. 4.

Em’s masterful lyric work shines so bright in this album, I think I’m blind. Solid backing music, with choosy beat selection makes this album a pleasure to listen to.

Nice yeah Slim Shady LP, this album really stands out in its imagery, storytelling and general cinematic experience. Before this album I had a general hard time consistently paying attention to lyrics in rap (in every genre really). But Eminem in this project doesn't really give you much oof a choice, and I found myself in every wacky ass story and weird beat. Absolutely love love the vibe of horrorcore that appears on here in songs like 97 Bonnie and Clyde, a favorite Eminem track for me.

I came into this album fully expecting to give it a 5, but I think the exposure to the other classic rap albums in this book has made me realize it really didn't hold up over time as well as others. For the first time, I really found myself questioning how much I liked listening to the violence in his music. As evidenced by the rating, I still clearly do. But the fact that I had to question it at all kind of proves the original point. Favorite track: Role Model

Wherever I’ve returned to songs from this album I’ve felt uncomfortable. More than once I’ve said that this era of Eminem hasn’t aged well. Listening from beginning to end though is an entirely different experience. This album is an incredible piece of work. The thread that runs throughout (this is who you think I am) works to poke fun at the critics who can’t imagine that rap can be fictional. Having said all that, I still did die a few times of horror because these songs are so dark.

This album is a shot of nostalgia this morning, transporting me back to middle school, watching the music video for My Name Is on Much Music. I remember the first time I heard the uncensored version of the song, I felt like such a badass. I still have a soft spot for Eminem. I'm not much of a hip hop/rap fan, but he is one hell of a rapper, and I tend to gravitate towards him as opposed to these new rap stars who need to start their names with Lil' for some reason (Lil Baby, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty...wtf). Eminem has more substance than any of those "artists". Eminem's lyrics are vulger, and they are meant to be that way. It kind of shocks you into listening to his music. His topics of conversation (especially on this record) center around mysogeny, murder, rape, shitty childhoods, and drug abuse. A lot of people get mad at his themes or lyrics, but they are ironically doing exactly what he wants them to do, giving him crazy amounts of free publicity. The simple fact that Eminem is still making good music should go a long way to proving his worth on the scene. I unapologetically enjoy his beats/samples/rap style. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed today's listen. The songs that featured Dr Dre and Royce Da 5'9" were a nice addition to the record. The one criticism I have, which I've had with every rap/hip hop record so far is why the fuck do they always feel the need to break the flow of the record with pointless skits? The record would have been stronger without them I think. Favourite songs: My Name Is, Bad Meets Evil, Guilty Conscience, Role Model, I'm Shady, Brain Damage, If I Had, Rock Bottom, As The World Turns Least favourite songs: Cum on Everybody, and all the dumb fuckin skits (Public Service Announcement, Paul, Bitch, Lounge, Ken Kaniff, and Soap) 4/5

I mean yeah

classic eminem, yummy dummy

Buen disco de rap/hip-hop por un auténtico cantante emblemático, con buenos ritmos y bases. Reaccionario y reivindicativo a partes iguales
