Reviews (page 7 of 7)
At first I thought it wasn't as bad as I was expecting but after a while it just all sounds the same . Not as 'rah' as it might have been but still not my sort of stuff .
Knew I'd hate this, was right. At least I'll never have to listen again.
This project continues to confirm that metal is just not for me. This feels overly technical, but not very musical.
Imagine a band called "Coronavirus". (There probably is one, tbh). I feel like I'm gonna hate this, even though Scott Ian was likable on vh1's "I Love The..." shows. Yep, I hate it. Long songs, lots of guitars, the opposite of beautiful singing, typical metal lyrics (war/death/benevolent aggression). Wish I were listening to Eminem's 'Square Dance' instead. More backwards words here too ("Efilnikufesin") - I haven't dutifully been keeping track of them, but now I regret that because they're much more common than I realised. 'Imitation of Life' is the name of an R.E.M. song; I wonder if they copied it (an imitation of Imitation of Life). Highlight: "Judge Drucker, the man, he is the law / Druck it" (lol) Language observation: why do so many people say Amthrax with an "m"? It's like the opposite of place assimilation. Maybe it's like one of those overcorrection deals where people assume the "n" was assimilated and it's actually an "m". An exanple I'll never use.
Hmmm.. yeah,no. It’s too heavy metal for me and on top of that the guys voice annoys me. I listened to the first song and realised I don’t have to listen to this, so I won’t!
Could not get into this at all today. I'm realising that I think for hard rock and metal, drumming and drum sound are important to me. I think there's some flashy fast drumming here but it sounds and feels paper thin to me. Guitar sounds are a little buzzy too - it's altogether a bit more punk sounding than I'd like
'Murder, murder / Commit cold-blooded murder / Like Nazis during World War II / They only follow orders.' Oh wow, that's some profound shit, I almost don't know what to say. While I take to some of the thrash drums & the punky vibes, I don't care for what Among The Living is in essence, an album that's boring, lifeless, repetitious, purposeless. It's Belladonna & his tough-not-tough screaming & his brief moments of melodiousness that are the real tough sell for me. Literally ever track sounds the same - the same exact riffs, the same pounding drums, & the same vocals that revel in the same trying to get a point across that's no point at all. 'Apathy can never solve.' That's like a 12-year-old trying to sneak in a 'big' word to impress.
no es mi onda
Never liked Anthrax..my first full album listen. I gave it a try and I hope this is the last time. I can say I liked some of the music but the vocals SUCK
Not for me so 2 outta 10
no thank you 😌
If they set out to play tuneless crap at high speed, they almost succeeded. But on too many tracks the band struggle to keep up with the drums.
No
Not for me
not for me
I don’t think we really need all this thrash. A bit of Metallica and Megadeth is plenty.
I hate it
No. No. No.
Way too much yelling. No thanks.
It is very difficult to take this music seriously. And it is a chore to listen to.
Awful.
I'm only on track eight, but it's time to call it folks. Stop. He's already dead.
Hate it
Took years off my life
Trash (metal)
I never got into Anthrax
I kinda like the music but the vocals and lyrics are not good.
Skip. I listened to it, but really didn't enjoy it much at all. Some moments of interesting guitar stuff, but didn't hook me in general.
I tried, but it's a no.
Classic example of metal at its worse.
ughhhh
hell no.
Music for angry bald men.
Cheesy
Never been a fan of the hollow, noisy ‘80s thrash.
not a metal fan, sorry
Thrash metal is not my thing. Struggled to get through this.
Detesto el género. Trash metal no es para mi
2/10
Agitating soz
🥱
By far the least of the Big 4 thrash metal bands. I was going to say the only good thing they ever did was get a riff sampled by Public Enemy, but that was Slayer.
Nope!
not a great listen.
Thought I could hack this cos of how goofy the 'singing' is, but the thrash still unavoidably thrashes, so no dice.
Ugh! I suffered through it. All songs sounds the same.
Damn that's terrible
It’s not the worst, but I didn’t really enjoy it. Lyrically pretty juvenile. Musically, all the songs sound the same - like, exactly the same. I’m not a fan of the genre, so I don’t know if this is a particularly strong example? I think there’s probably bands that do this thing better. I could see comparison to Metallica perhaps, but Metallica’s music is much more melodic and dimensional than anything on this album. No notables for me.
Name: Dan Spitz Occupation: Guitar hero Specialist Subject : Playing the track before the current track I love hard rock and metal but I hate this. It sounds like each band member is playing a totally different track. There’s no coherence. Just sounds like they are all racing each other and playing whatever comes into their heads Of the 'Big 4' thrash bands, I’ve enjoyed Megadeth and Metallica. But this is shite.
Not my favorite
Not my cup of tea
Not a fan
Not enough cowbell
Hmmm. Was expecting this to be tighter than it was. The vocal sounded like a caricature of heavy metal (thinking Billy Madison’s 3rd grade graduation party). Perhaps the Public Enemy collaboration was peak anthrax for me.
Metal tolerance exceeded. Chelation, please.
This is some also-ran garbage.
If this is peak thrash, one would hate to hear trough thrash.
I am neither misunderstood or angry enough to connect with this album, though I am happy I have been exposed to thrash. Historically seems quite interesting, but not an album I enjoyed listening to
I dont think I need to explain why. Jk it was ok for a shit genre
Speed thrash metal is far from what I enjoy.
Nothing but coarse and raucous noise with eye-rolling lyrics.
Not my type
This is hard to listen to
This is the furthest from my wheelhouse yet. I even considered skipping it altogether but decided giving it a try. Did not like it even a tiny bit. I just couldn't take it seriously. The musicianship and even the physical prowess of the players is admirable, of course, but the music felt like ridiculuos posturing to me.
1. living - 1.5 2. mozh - 1.5 3. lauu - 0 4. NFL - 1.5 5. Skeleton - 1.5 6. Indians - 1 7. World -1.5 8. Horror - 1 9. Life - 1.5
First album generated for me. Definitely not a thrash metal fan, had to skip through most of the songs.
Dont like it Too heavy metal
Not my thing at all
No thanks
It’s just painful noise to me. Medley: A.D.I./Horror of It All began with some subtlety, but descended quickly into bombast. Yuck!
Thrash metal. Not when it's as generic as this
Not for me
Urgh. These guys should just have released a single. I really don't see why this made the list
Not an Anthrax fan..
Sori vaan, mutta en pitänyt yhtään.
Ow. Bad singing can be good, but...
It's thrash again. I still don't get it.
No. Just, no.
Thrash metals really not my thing. I don't mind the intros when its just drums / guitar riffs and slowly building up the tension - but really don't like it once the vocals kick in and they up the temp. Although lyrically not quite as dumb as other examples on the list (although that's a very low bar) and the delivery is much clearer.
Among the Living I didn’t mind the sludgy, Black Sabbath-esque opening to the first track, but oh, yep there it is, the double kick drum and power chords combo and the ensuing musical moribundity. It does get a little more interesting when the tempo shifts back and forth, and I didn’t mind the solo, but ultimately it’s pretty much a rehash of every other thrash metal song. Which is also true for the rest of it, despite their perhaps being a slightly broader lyrical palate than some of their peers, and the odd occasion like on Indians or One World where they create a more memorable hook/chorus. Obviously it’s not my thing, but I didn’t dislike it as much as say Sepultura or Venom, and I can see if you do like metal and thrash this is a good example, but for me a it's a very Partridgean shoulder shrug when he’s introduced to the man who’s just revamped current affairs, as I can find very little to be interested in. 🤷 Playlist submission: Indians
Thrash metal just not my thing. Not the worst example this has thrown up, you can hear the lyrics and though it’s very repetitive song to song there isn’t the epic glacial plodding or ultra angry fly sounds of others. But a waste of 50 mins for me. 1 Star
Rough, like crazy rough. Love Scott Ian, not a fan of Anthrax
Not my genre
The worst bits of slayer Megadeth and twisted sister combined. I LOVE rock and metal and I found this interminable
Much like the plague, Anthrax is something that should be avoided.
Gave up after song #1. Just wasn’t born into that thrasher life
Nah
I still hate heavy metal😟
Very generic metal to my ears. I'm sure they were pioneers of the sound and everything but I just can't get behind it. Indians wasn't bad for the first half or so. There's almost no bass in the mix of this whole album. Odd choice.
too hard and angry for me
I felt the same way about receiving this album that I imagine I’d feel if I had contracted Anthrax.
Exactly what I always thought this would sound like (derogatory)
Thrash metal has always been my least favourite genre. So far, I’ve been won over by Metallica and Megadeath, but Anthrax is the worst of the worst.
No
shite
Not terrible but not for me
Personal flaw but I'm unable to listen to these metal albums. I know Anthrax is huge in their circle though but it isn't for me. 2.5/10 (1.25/5)
The listen was another proof to me that I really dislike trash metal - it's one of the few genres I'll never get into. I listened to it from start to finish but I can't say much nice about it, it's very repetitive and boring. It sounds a bit like Metallica but a weaker version. 1 star, sorry.
Nope
Oh my goodness, what a racket. It sounds like my music system is broken. And if it's not, then it will be soon. Metal, thrash metal and all that stuff is not for me. To protect my ears, my mind and my speakers, I left it at short samples. That's even worse than gangsta rap. Although ... Let's see what I say about the next Gangsta Rap album. 1/5
yawn
Dms heavy, la vdd ima skip this one
One of the better one star albums, I'd say. I can see how some people would be into this. I like that the lyrics are distinguishable as words (even if they sound very stupid to me, both sonically and lyrically). The guitar could sound cool to the right type of person. I'm just not that type of person.
1001 Albums #11 sorry i hate this pretty sure banging my head into a wall and listening to this result in the same headache
No, not having this. Awful high school rock band with terrible vocals. Get in the bin. Boring is the nicest thing I can say about it
Skill involved? Of course. Are these sounds made by musical instruments? Sure. Is it music? Debatable. Next time I want to be screamed at in an echo chamber of constant cacophony, I'll just take my kids to the next indoor amusement park birthday party. Easily could've died without hearing this one.
This started okay but soon got VERY monotonous. I really couldn't tell one song from the next. And what is 'Indians' all about? Hard work for little reward.
Came close to not listening at all. This shit just isn't for me. I gave it a go. There's something almost spiritual about it all, even if I'm a non-believer in the metal bollocks.
It's almost comical how bad some of these heavy metal bands are.
So bad it's ... bad.
I think the best thing about this album is the cover art. For the music.. What is with these 80s metal bands and just changing tempos at the snap of a finger? I don't get it. When I'm vibing with the guitars and the drums, it suddenly changes to something completely different! I hate it! I can only imagine the writing process was something along the lines of "Hey this riff sounds cool, let's add it in!" All of the intros to the songs were great. They all had me hyped up to hear the rest of the song. And then I was met with disappointment with the rest of the song. The most "consistent" song in that sense, and the one I enjoyed the most from this album, was I Am The Law. Indians was okay too. There's only 1 feeling that can describe this music, anger. I just felt like I wanted to break stuff while listening to this record. By the 4th song, I was ready to turn the album off. However, I actually enjoyed the back half of this album more than the front half. In contrast to my previous statement, there were actual transitions between sections and so I felt like the songs flowed better. I don't think there's any reason for me to return to this album. Not even for a single. 1/5
No, thank you. I did sample it, and immediately disagreed that there was any need to listen to the whole thing before I die. So, I didn't listen to a lot. My rating is, therefore, unsound. I'm not disputing how much practice it takes to sound like this, incidentally. I just don't like it, and I'm not in the mood to be objective.
I'm not into metal.
Thrash is just not my thing. Probably wont ever listen to this again. But I can at least now say that I know what Anthrax sounds like.
Not my cup of tea, but although I expected to hate it, I was able to listen to it. To my ears, most of these songs are really repetitive. Not sure that it’s fair for me to rate it, as the rating is a reflection of my personal taste, and I just don’t care for this genre. Although I could give it a listen once, I would never choose to listen to it again. Life is too short.
STANDOUTS: nothing, i DNF'd every song OVERALL: 1/5
Thrash metal. Didn't even bother after 1 track
Adding to my "Heading Out to Fuck Some Shit Up" Playlist now.
My introduction to Anthrax was in the late 80s during college. It was not by choice. It was because some of my friends liked them. I did not. I still do not. I am no longer in touch with those college friends. If I were I imagine they would be wearing red MAGA hats and “Grab her by the pu**y” shirts. Hard pass.
Not for me
Why are they so angry? Why am I angry??!! Why do I suddenly hate my dad and authority?? I remember Anthrax from my younger years. Back then I thought they were overly whiny with no actual musical talent, just the ability to repeat chords very quickly whilst shouting. I still think the same. This album did energise me to be fair, but it’s a bit too angry at its dad for me.
A lot of screaming apparently makes Trash Metal.
noxious
Craptastic
kinda lame
Metal
I am the Law! And I sentence Antrax to be forgotten by me right away, another boring Metal album in this 1001 list, hope some interesting classic US noise will be in list again, like Sonic Youth/Husker Du/Pixies/Stooges, with more brain cells and originality.
no fuckin thank you
Um
There's talent here but it didn't grab me in the least. Noise
Wasn’t terrible just not my thing
I’ve been enjoying the metal albums so far but I did not care for this man’s voice, so I was disappointed. The rest was cool though!
This has some of the worst vocal mixing I've ever heard. It sounds like a bunch of teenagers in a bedroom. In a bad way.
Not my music.
I wish the double bass pedal would be uninvented
Thrash metal is terrible
It’s been some week
Fucking dreadful
Music was fine until singer came in. 1/5
Noise
This is heavy meh-tal at its worst. Just noise and not good. I understand why it’s on the list to an extent, but I don’t like it at all.
Not for me. Super hardcore
meh metal
The were trying so hard to be edgy it was embarrassing. The guitar was really good but the rest of the song ruined it
Too heavy
Headache inducing. Not my cup of tea.
No
Its not Music, its just noise.
Record someone tapping pencils on a desk whilst someone else thrums a rubber band and shouts a lot. Now put that recording through a noise gate and distortion filter, and play it through a 10kW stack. You now have this album.
Lollig.
I've never liked Anthrax and this only affirms my dislike of them
I tried really hard to get through this album but I just couldn't make it. Sounded like a machine gun set to auto-fire and gave me a headache.
Of the so-called “Big Four” of thrash metal, I’d say these guys rank 5th.
Couldn’t get through the whole album, drums are excessive and that’s probably intentional and the point but for me it disrupts the rest. Singing is actually quite clean and impressive, sounds a bit like an Ozzy Osbourne impression and probably inspired by Sabbath and tried to put their spin on it.
Not for me
In case you’re planning your next vacation the four cities where Anthrax is most popular are Santiago, Sao Paulo, Mexico and Bogotá. This apparently is the LP that launched them into the Big Four of Thrash Metal elite.
Just not in the mood for 80s metal. There's better genre music before and after this. Pretty dull, uninspired and generic.
Meh…
I'm either far too immature to appreciate this or far to mature to to appreciate this. Either way . . . get off my lawn.
surely got poisoned. first ever poison by audio consumption
Ça fait chuter mon average rating et personne ne veut ça
cf. ma précédente review d'Alice in Chains
More like “Far from Interesting”, am I right? While we’re here and since this is the first thrash record I’m reviewing, I’m gonna lay out where I land with Thrash’s “Big Four”: Metallica: hands down the best of the four in terms of songwriting. They had a gift for writing great compositions that were not only heavy, but with twists and turns that could start and stop on a dime. Not the most technically skilled of the big four, but their knack for songwriting puts them well above the competition. Megadeth: Highly skilled and technical, faster than a meth head on a motocross bike. The thrashiest of the thrashers, perhaps. In terms of songwriting and composition, a notch below Metallica, but their technique and skill is above the rest. Slayer: Just brutal and uncompromising. Beyond extreme. Speed for the sake of speed. Melodicism is nil, but their fans don’t care, they want destruction. Their songwriting and compositions, save a few aberrations here and there, is nearly non-existent - Slayer is audio chaos. And now the star of today’s show… Anthrax: kind of a weird hybrid between the heaviness of Metallica and the speed of Slayer, but with a more lighthearted attitude and willingness to incorporate other genres into their thrash. Of the Big Four, they are the closest to punk and hardcore on the thrash spectrum, due in no small part to their proximity to the NYC scene in the 80’s (also explains their interest in hip-hop. NYC music scene was a veritable melting pot back then). Anthrax was always my least favorite of the four. That hasn’t changed. I made it about halfway through this record before shutting it off. Their songs always felt very stale to me. I think they might be the most “of-their-time” of the four. This record still feels like an 80’s metal record, where some of the records from Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer don’t feel as tied to the era they were released. Long story short, I respect Anthrax, but their music isn’t for me.
I prefer music that doesn't vibrate my teeth.
It hurts me ears. Dad.
Nope nope nope, this is just very bad white noise, it only got 1/5 because I had to give something
👎🏻
So, I listened and didn't like. Re-listened, still didn't like. Read Luke's review before I was going to write mine and decided to listen AGAIN, at the gym.... Load and fast fast for sure, but obnoxious and repetitive. May be the only time I turned down my music when working out. But it wasn't total disaster. I had a good chest workout! Being a big Rage fan, I thought I'd get into the in your face bands like Pantera and Anthrax, but it jut doesn't do it for me..... Original score 1 Score after last night 1.5 because I gad a good workout.
wow, I extremely hate this
i went to see mogwai last night. that was good, this is not.
crap
I don’t like it. A lot of people do, but I don’t.
Första plattan jag inte tar mig igenom. Kom till Indians men sen gick det inte längre. Ni vet betyget.
I don't like metal.
Like Metallica but really bad
Not into metal really
Thrash metal has never appealed to me. This proves it.
Sounds just like any other speed/trash metall band. Its fairly difficult to be unique and creative in metall and this album is no exception. It is a well produced album by talented musicians but you would not find me llsteting to this ever again.
Trash Metal, aber leider langweilig mit nerviger Stimme
Hated this. The song "Indians" was so wrong. Good drums though.
Music that doesn’t speak to me at all
Oh literally just fuck off. I can't even be arsed to write something about this in great detail. I struggled through this and tried to be open minded but cba
Trash.
Hvað get ég sagt? Mér finnst óþægilegt að hlusta á Trash metal, beinlínis líkamlega óþægilegt. Get dáðst að hröðum trommuslætti og ágætum og skýrum söng. En þetta er ekki fyrir mig.
Not my vibe.
Not fo me.
I’m giving this a 1 cause I’m tired of this list giving us this type of music over and over and over again and I’m in a bad mood today and I’d rather listen to the next album on the list which is Joan Armatrading which I haven’t heard but I already know it’s better than this sorry not sorry.
1987. Caught In A Mosh
Ugh, that was was a slog. I did not like it. It does make me curious about what kind of musical attributes are prized by people who love this band. Maybe there’s an article about thrash metal and what it does for people who like it.
Not my kind
yuck
Nah.
I listened to a little bit of Metallica recently. These albums have led me to question whether I remember stuff I loved back in the day through rose-colored glasses, or however that metaphor goes. How much is nostalgia impacting how I review something I liked as a teenager? Well, listening to Metallica again, I realized I don't like it as much as I did in the late 90s (not a huge fan, but like them enough to own a few albums). Still some damn-impressive guitar playing and drumming, but the vocals and the whole package just doesn't do it for me anymore. Anthrax is worse Metallica. Much worse. The only question remaining is if Anthrax is worse than Venom... (If I had hair long enough to whip it around when headbanging, would I like this more?) Of the "big four" metal bands of the 80s (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax), Anthrax is the only one to never win a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. They even lost out to Tenacious D once, and Tenacious D is at least 1/2 loving parody. We'll see when the other metal bands come up on the list, but I think Anthrax just isn't that good.
I can handle the music for a couple songs, I can’t handle the “singing”. I just can’t get sit through more than a couple tracks, so it’s a hard pass from me.
hate hate hate this. 1 star is an affront to the other albums ive given it to
Tried playing Anthrax in a glass house on the Oregon coast and the ocean disapproved. Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax can be found naturally in soil and commonly affects domestic and wild animals around the world. Although it is rare in the United States, people can get sick with anthrax if they come in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products. Anthrax can cause severe illness in both humans and animals.
With the first strum of a bad guitar effect I was like, “I’m going to hate this.” But once the pounding double kick came in I was open to it being cool. It’s very heavy, which is what I found Metallica lacking. The band is definitely talented, at least technically. I like the punk rock chanting. I heard a lot of influences, Rush, Prague, Punk. I could see a direct line leasing from Anthrax to Rage Against the Machine. But overall, I found that after the effect of the driving metal wore off, my toes stopped tapping, I found it repetitive and boring. I also found the singer pretty lack luster—except for his wild banshee like screams—he doesn’t seem up to snuff compared to the technical skill of the band, his voice was just sort of bland/flat. I started out thinking it might top Metallica, but eventually I realized this album lacked the song craft of Metallica. But my toes were tapping the whole time and I was pumped. I’m thinking barely a two or a 1.
It's heavy in a way Metallica wishes they were. I was excited and hopeful when I clicked play, but that heaviness came at a cost of variety. I pretty quickly lost interest to the repetitiveness. Made for an interesting soundtrack as I sat in on a DE&I meeting.
Bad. Unlistenable.
This album gave me anxiety!
That's a nope from me.
thrash metal, nope.
