Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Thinking about the album compared to their peers it feels a little lacklustre and not in the same league, good for a once off but it didn't make a fan out of me.

Not my type at all

I'm not the biggest fan of metal in general, but I did kinda dig this album. I like the switch up that would happen in each song it kept it kinda intriguing throughout and it kept my interest. Nothing more than that however. Cool riffage though tbh

A decent shredder of an album, appreciated a heavy, guitar-oriented album after some lighter fare over the last few months. Fatigue does set in a bit past the 40-minute mark (these guys aren’t really reinventing the melodic wheel from track to track), but for the genre and what it is I was A-OK with throwing this on for a listen today.

Kind of fun?

One world, indians+

Anthrax are very much spot 4 when it comes to the Big 4 of Thrash, but you can’t go wrong with the original recipe stuff from the 80s

Meh, it's alright. As far as thrash metal goes, it's not my favorite, but I think that's mostly the vocal styling. Not a huge fan of gang vocals, and this feels like an early version of that. Maybe I'm more of a Megadeth girl?

Thrash Metal. They seem to like long intros. The songs range from fast tempo to blazingly fast tempo - often in the same song. There must be a dozen tempo changes in “Among The Living” on the track. Vocals are just okay. Lyrics are meh. Rhythm guitar work is tight. The bass and drums are amazingly in synch. Not my thing but I can appreciate the musicianship.

You know what this is

Fav: Indians LF: Caught In A Mosh Low 7

The painting of Among the Living has been the subject of discussion, because it was long believed to depict the character Rev. Henry Kane, the antagonist from the film Poltergeist II: The Other Side, while others thought it depicted Randall Flagg, the subject of the album's title track and the antagonist from the Stephen King novel The Stand. Drummer Charlie Benante, who conceived the concept for the cover, explained: "It was just about how much evil there is amongst us. I wanted to show just the same type of person on the cover. The same type of people and then, the one person that was sticking out kind of giving you a wave, like a 'hi!'".

An ok listen. Really nice to hear while I'm working because despite it's noise, it doesn't command too much attention. I won't go back but it's fine.

Not my jam. But really good for what it is. More melodic than I anticipated.

So much better than I anticipated...might be my favorite thrash album I have ever heard. Catchy choruses and great driving riffs. 3/5

Some good moments. A solid metal album

No flame, but the vocalist wasn't that great and the backing vocals were pretty annoying. Some of the riffs still go hard though.

3.5/5. Not really what I am into but I thought it was good. I could see how people would like this.

anthrax is definitely a band i wouldn't have sought out on my own, but i can't say i hate this album. among the living is thrash metal, obviously, but there is a good amount of solid instrumentation behind the screaming vocals. anthrax couldn't be a reputable band without creating decent music. having a song like "indians" on an album in 1987 is bewildering. gotta love a political song you weren't expecting! because anthrax doesn't do anything halfway, their lyrics are particularly hard hitting. i can't even single out any specific lines because all of it is amazing. a surprising 3.5. thanks for the head banging, anthrax.

Listening to this, it is really obvious that Anthrax was inspired by acts like Metallica, Judas Priest, and so on, but that they wanted to take that to a heavier level. In that, they do incredibly well. That said, I don't feel like they reach the same heights as those who inspired them. This was okay, but not great. I think it would come in at a high 2.-something, but I'll make it a weak 3.

Thrashy

Much better than I was expecting. Pretty good.

Nice to bike to

Surprised by not hating this

Better than expected. Hard rocking…great when the mood is right. Stand outs: Indians, I am the Law, Caught in a Mosh 3/5

I definitely know the band by name and whenever I've seen Scott Ian interviewed I've liked him in that setting. Seems like a thoughtful and interesting person. I don't recall having listened to their music before so I am very glad this album showed up today. I knew they are a thrash metal band so I had a vague idea of what to expect, and they also perform with real skill, no doubt about it. Although this style of music is not what I listen to on a regular basis, I like this album. Great energy, strong performances, and a lot of fun.

metal very similar to Metallica

It was pretty good

Disappointing thrash

Love the heavy guitar and the speed changes. However, I find the vocal style quite irritating and whingey.

Good early Thrash Metal. Of all of the Big 4 bands this is the one I listen to the least. Not bad but I would listen to Metallica if I’m feeling like listening to Thrash Metal.

Decent thrash album

I didn't mind the instrumentals on this album at all. Even though they went a little wild at times, it felt like it added more to each song. What I didn't like was the screamy singing. To me, it made each song less cohesive

More of a hybrid of hardcore punk and metal than I realized. I don't think they have the right balance though. If they just sang the lead in more of a punk style, rather than just the backing vocals, I'd be way more into this.

I was bopping my leg up and down and didn't even think about that, so I guess I can't say it sucks. But, in general I'm not a huge fan of the sound recorded. I'd imagine live I'd be like "fuuuuck yaaaa brooooo". Definitely better than modern Metallica though.

This is not the type of thing I'd always be in the mood for, but it was certainly an energy booster first thing in the morning. I wasn't paying much attention to the lyrics, as the guitars and drums overpowered throughout. Overall, the songs didn't captivate me much, but every once in a while, I'd be like "oh that's a neat riff" or something like that.

It’s interesting that this album comes right before Alice In Chains’s “Dirt”. And while AIC isn’t my favorite “grunge” band from the 1990s, it does provide a good counterpoint to the thrash provided by Anthrax here. Whenever any artist pushes too hard to be a specific genre, it becomes almost a caricature. Anthrax is a good thrash band, and can really play the shit out of their instruments. Yet like so many post-Ozzy leaving Sabbath bands, they try to be soooo metal. What you end up with is weird arrangement choices, like operatic singing in a part of your song that doesn’t really fit the lyrics. Or why did you include that slow & somber acoustic solo at the beginning of that very thrash song? To show you could really play? Uh, ok… and it’s not like these guys don’t know how to stretch into other genres. Their work w/ Public Enemy while covering “Bring The Noise” where drummer Scott Ian does a good job rapping a couple verses of the song. And I personally have seen Ian at shows for bands like Fishbone & Fugazi. But they gotta be metal I guess… maybe bc I’ve noticed this sort of thing, it’s what made “Metalocalypse” my favorite cartoon. “That’s not metal!” “Heavier!” Sometimes I want to listen to thrash, maybe even this album, but I go in remembering it is what rock ‘n’ roll sounds like when you go heavy and fast yet strip almost anything that ties the rock to its blues roots. Grunge does the same thing, but keeps its relationship with the blues. You can hear it listing to AIC’s & Anthrax albums back to back. The thrash just sound fairly devoid of emotional content & context.

Def interesting. Love the speed and aggression. I didn't love the mix - vocals were a bit too 'forward' and 'black flag' but lots of awesome guitar stuff on this one. Close to a 4 but not quite.

Has a good tempo and a solid vibe. Actually sounds more dated than 1987 somehow. Not a criticism.

My blood pressure went up, my ear drums started bleeding, I had whiplash from headbanging too hard, and my erection still won't subside after 6 hours. 3 doctor visits out of 5. 👩‍⚕️👩‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

As with most albums of this genre and time, the recording lets it down. Vocals aren’t my favourite from the early thrash records but other than that it’s a pretty enjoyable record.

Metal!

it's meh

I was expecting something more along the lines of Iron Maiden, but this album was more punk than heavy metal.

Bin eigentlich kein anthrax Fan, aber hab mich gefreut dass mal kein new wave album kommt

Quite a good heavy metal album, not shouting as expected and quite enjoyable

Among Us

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I guess I prefer crossover thrash to thrash.

A good rocking metal album that is a bit more stuck in the hair metal yelling style. The instrumentals are really good I enjoyed most of the songs. The hard part to get through was the higher pitched yells that were very much an 80s thing and feel dated now. Not my favorite metal band but one that is pretty talented. 6.4/10

first listen hard hitter but still not super interesting to me

My first Anthrax album. Very hard. I’m maybe not as big a fan of this as I am of Megadeath or other metal bands. I can appreciate why folks like this though. 3/5

Anthrax's big breakthrough album. As other bands have come forth as faster, more technically proficient, and honestly, better, this album has not aged evenly. There are still some standout songs, but unless you're a big 80s thrash fan, I'd give this a pass.

Great sounding and full of thrash

Ticks my boxes but letting down by a certain monotony and those grating vocals

Enjoyable musically (can be a bit samey but accomplished drum abs guitar work nonetheless), not such a fan of the vocals, but I can get on with the whole thing as a solid 3.

It is heavy metal. Which means everything is very loud. Now it is not death metal so you can actually understand the lyrics. There is very minimal screaming. However, the songs are all a little to long as they have longer lead-ins and out-tros. I was familiar with "I am the law." I didn't hate it but I wouldn't listen to it again. I didn't skip any songs. It is not really a 3 but i will round up.

5/10 actually pretty cool but way too repetitive and I was not a fan of the lyrics

Had I listened much to them in high school/early 20s, this would make me want to run through a brick wall. Coming to it later in life makes me feel like it's a bit juvenile, but not bad.

Overall, I found "Among the Living" to be a solid album that showcases Anthrax's skill and expertise in the thrash metal genre. The band's musicianship is tight and the songs are well-written, with catchy riffs and powerful vocals from frontman Joey Belladonna. However, I did find myself a little bored by the album near the end. While the first half of the album is full of high-energy tracks that are sure to get your head banging, the second half feels a bit more repetitive and formulaic. Despite this, I still appreciate and respect the album for its place in thrash metal history.

HEAVY. Fun. Classic

I just knew Anthrax by name and reputation, but I was looking forward to this one. The first few seconds started great, but with the first vocal lines, the album became a disappointment. To disentangle that: all of the instrumentation on the album is great - similar to Metallica at their best (not quite there, as the guitar solos were definitely worse than Metallica at their best, but close enough where riffs are concerned). The bland vocals (more garage pop rock than anything else) ruined the album though. The few punkish hook lines sprinkled in were a further detriment to the album. It would have massively benefitted from trying to run after Metallica in vocal style as well. Of course, it would never have won a prize for originality, but it's not winning that like this either and it would definitely have been better.

Thrash metal.

Among the Living is the third album by American heavy metal band Anthrax. It is considered the band's breakthrough album - despite no radio airplay - being critically acclaimed and certified gold in 1990. Some of the success came from Anthrax's own approach to thrash metal, which was fast, heavy riffs, combined with clean, melodic vocals from member Joey Belladonna, along with many rhythm changes on the album. This was a great thrash metal album and it's easy to see why Anthrax was grouped with other 80's heavy metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. This would make a good entry level metal album for any interested listeners.

Never listened to an Anthrax album before.

Pretty good, but it’s not the best metal can offer. Sounds like a mix of the other Big 4 bands

No metallica but some head boppers for sure.

Musically a very energetic and rhythmic album to get into. If a fan of this metal, each song is more or less the same and enough for fans to love in its entirety. The issue is for those not fans, not much on here to differentiate the songs. For me, the vocals were not good. Poorly written parts and a misuse of a decent metal voice.

Decent Thrash Metal album, surprisingly melodic but missing standout songs and some guitar solos to be more than a 3

A great thrash metal album that really woke me up this morning! Full of heavy guitar riffs and heart thumping drums really brought the album to life. Having supported Metallica on tour really opened up their audience and cemented them as one of the all-time great thrash metal groups. Best: Caught In A Mosh Worst: One World 3.5 Stars

Definitely agree this is an album you should hear before you die. I had no idea these guys were talking about all kinds of social issues, while simultaneously blazing past all reasonable limits on shredding. They seem to take the music/technique seriously but themselves not too seriously. I don’t think I’ll ever take the trip again but it was quite a ride.

3.5. WAHHHHHH rock on!! Awesome sick and ahead of it’s time. Cool to know this was for drummer of Metallica their aOpener. kinda flat and same elements over and over. Gets redundant but it’s awesome

Metal is never something this reviewer will understand on a deep level. Imagery and parental warnings aside, the genre does not leave a large footprint. On to the review, Anthrax is a drive hard sing hard metal band, and they are great at it. The tempo is high energy with aggressive drums, and the guitars are guttural and played with an authority that can be felt. Even in the more thrashy elements (e.g. Efilnikufesin) there is a well-played base melody/rhythm that avoids chaotic nonsensical drivel, but instead seems to signal a listener that getting crazy is expected here. Vocally, the lead singer takes some notes from 80's glam metal with the occasional shriek going into pre-pubescent frequencies, but it is used in moderation the kind where the listener can treat those moments as displays of vocal talent. The hard singing is remarkably clear, the singer is not holding back but he is also not giving too much as to be unlistenable. Unlike other metal bands of the time, this album does have significant variety. At some point metal bands find a boring type of consistency where the listener realizes that each song has in some way become a repurposed version of a song they heard earlier. This review is happy to report that element as not being too evident here. Granted, metal has a consistent or expected sound to it, but where a good metal band really shines is their ability to build upwards from there and expanding the soul of the genre. Anthrax's incorporation of glam rock melodies, sewn between driving metal, this creates variety across each track, and this is good.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - One World (7) 2 - Caught In A Mosh (2) 3 - Imitation of Life (9)

Not really a fan but can see why people would like this. 6/10.

Decent listen. Gets credit for having a song about Judge Dredd on it

This was what I needed to wake me up this morning. Its not very good but it hits hard

afraid... not so bad. fast and metal. 3? it's annoying but fine.

3.5/5 Better than I expected.

Pretty underwhelming for an group named Anthrax. Not bad by any means though.

Don't dislike it but certainly need to be in the right mood to fully enjoy

My knowledge of Anthrax comes from a Beavis & Butthead cassette I had growing up, they have a skit and then play a song (Looking down the barrel of a gun). Thrash album, fast guitars and drums. I don't think there's anything too inventive here, feel like it's been done a lot better by other groups but it was fine. Overall it's competently made, I do like that they reference Steven King and Judge Dredd, but just lacking in something.

I remember seeking this one out because it had a song based on Apt Pupil by Stephen King (Skeletons in the Closet). Anthrax came from a different side of thrash than the other Big 4 bands. There was a little more punk to their sound than Metallica or Megadeth, so they sat closer to the Slayer end of the spectrum, but there was more melody that Joey Belladonna brought.

Overall I liked it, but didn't really connect with the vocals or lyrics. I mostly just liked the instrumental parts and drumming.

Tasteful (for thrash, certainly!), inventive, interesting and technically skilled. I respect it even if I don't think I'll seek it again. I did not expect to claim "Efilnikufesin" as my favorite, but here we are!

If you like thrash metal, you'll love this album. It's tight and rocks your pants off.

Do I have to have an opinion? Well. I always forget that Dave Mustaine was a Metallica once upon a time, until I hear certain thrash chords and Ride The Lightning comes charging into my head. Anyway, largely indifferent to this.

Genre: Thrash Metal 3/5 As much as I wanted to say this album kicks your balls out of your tits and makes you beg for mercy, I forgot this was the 1980s, and while some of what's here may have been considered over the top for its day and age, it pales in comparison to what metal is up to nowadays. However, Anthrax played an important part in the mainstream growth in credibility of thrash metal, and they should be recognized for that. However, if my parents look back fondly at Anthrax, I think that unfortunately means they weren't as badass as they, or we, thought. As far as the album goes, it kicks off with its high energy title track, Among the Living, and follows it with one of Anthrax's best, Caught in a Mosh. Both are wonderfully intense examples of what thrash metal can do right, while still blending it with good songwriting and arranging. It takes a bit of a break after that, unfortunately, with Indians being the only real banger of note left in the tracklist. Regardless of its overall meh-ness, this is a record that will bring a smile to any metalhead's face, and that should be enough.

Weak opening two songs. Strong riffs and drums throughout but the vocals at times sounded like a bad metal cover-band. Peaked with 'Indians.' Not something I'd listen to twice.

To me, Anthrax are a lightly more aggressive Metallica. OK, that's par for the course in thrash metal land. The album begins with high energy and never lets up. And this is exactly the problem I'm having with it - it lacks variation. If we look at Metallica again, even on their second album they changed the tempo and mood of some of their songs, so listeing never gets boring. Not so with Antrax. The album is good, but a bit tiring and numbing, and not as interesting as similar acts in the same genre. 2.5/5

Nice slice of 1980s metal, have to listen to more of these guys I think.

I like all the Stephen King references and the album cover is cool. The music is very…methy.

Metal, normalito

Not the best Trash album i have heard but it's not bad. not a big fan of the vocals, it sounds like Metallica meets suicidal tendencies.

3.7 - Good thrash metal from 1987. Highlights: “I am the Law” and “One World.”

I liked it but, other than ADI, I'm struggling to identify any defining characteristics from the other tracks. They sounded good but all ran together

Wasn't an Anthrax kind of day.

Nice instrumentals but wasnt really a fan of the overall melody. might check it out again for their lyrics

Started off slowly, but got better. Don’t mind a bit of thrash… this scratch’s that itch!

Generic rock, before rock got good... The lead signer sort of sounded like a 14yr old boy.

Among The Living shaped the final sound and some of the classics of the genre trash metal. It's like German tourists on the beach with white socks and sandals. It's strange, but you look at it longer than you think you would be looking at it. (5/10) FT: Caught in A Mosh

Excelente!

Always happy to enjoy some thrash - this is competent, but not distinctive

Anthrax are decent thrash, vocals irk me a bit, production is mega on this album though and some of the riffs rippppppp

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Among The Living, Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.), A Skeleton In The Closet Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Loved the drums and guitars immediately, but took me a while to warm up to the vocals and lyrics. Never got all the way there, but still rips. So far I've graded 1 album from 3 of the Big 4 of Thrash and I've got 1. Megadeth 2. Anthrax 3. Metallica

not a huge fan of thrahs metal but its alright, lyrics are kinda funny and its listenable

Well, that was a fun little trip down memory lane but not a trip I care to make again. Anthrax was genre-defining in their day, for sure. But there are just so many better metal/hardcore bands out there now. With the perspective that comes with the 34 years between now and when this album came out, it's clear that the vocals are amateurish and the songwriting is ... really shallow. It's pretty lame, honestly. But the musicianship is excellent and the performances are on point. Anyway, it didn't suck overall but it wasn't as awesome as I remember it being.

I like the sound of it but wasn't in the mood for thrash today. I'll have to return to it.

I was slightly surprised I liked this album as much as I did.

I'm sure that is something that I will enjoy much more in my teenage years. Classic metal with all the pros and cons of this loved music style. "I am the law" is an instant success.

Eipä tarjonnut ihmeitä mutta silti jätti pienen poltteen kuunnella lisää. Pitänee perehtyä Anthraxin tuotantoon tarkemmin.

Loppua kohden aloin lämmetä ja hyvä kokonaisuus

This takes me back. My mate Tim loved this record when it came out, and we listened to it a lot. We both liked thrash, but were much more attracted to the skateboard friendly end of the genre (Anthrax, plus local faves like the Hard-Ons, Massappeal, the Hellmenn) rather than the metal-dude end (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer). I didn't skate, but Tim did. And they were a bit funnier and relatable. This album really took me back, and I enjoyed the clean, unpretentious production (by Eddie Kramer, which surprised me to read). This is a really minor note, but I find the use of double kick on this album tasteful. many bands just run the double kick the whole way through songs, and I find it exhausting and, ironically, reduces the impact of the speed.

The drumming is the most consistent element, and holds the album together as well as it can through the slog of a middle section. The pace of the rhythm section fits the race through a collage of rock styles extremely well, but somehow gets stuck in the mud for fifteen minutes. A more focused effort would be insanely entertaining, even recorded.

trasheira

Well-polished metal album

Fun ride.

Being generous here because there's a song about Judge Dredd, but thrash metal is not for me, and neither is this album.

Everything about this is super cool and good except the vocals, which I do not dig at all.

Uh, this was harder to listen to than, say, Pantera. It's a little like fruit roll-ups. I remember liking them when I was young but they just don't appeal to me now. Good memories of Anthrax though, long live skate thrash!

Not a fan ...but yeah could get into some of it

Two next albums are much better

I used to listen to this album before my parents moved me from the armpit of Ohio, aka Toledo. I think I left the cassette in our old house and never missed it and hadn't listened to it until today. uhhhh.... One time, a long time ago... this spoke to me, but I guess I'm old because it was really hard to enjoy again. My younger self would've hated me.

Surprised that I enjoyed this album. Metal is not normally my favorite but Anthrax seems to add a punk sensibility to there metal ethos. The guitar histrionics are kept to short bursts and the songs have a punk attitude. 3 🌟

Pretty good metal album. Wasted on me.

Wasn't looking forward to this one, and I couldn't make my mind up whether I loved it or hated it, veering between the two as the album went on. Loved the energy throughout though.

Some nice guitar shredding.

Bang your head.

Ok but a bit to fast and furious.

Brings the noise. Not one I'll have on while the vicar is round

Thrasher

This was fine - some good riffs, production is a little light.

Recognized some songs, used to like anthrax a lot but not really my vibe anymore. Good for what it is

I was never super into Anthrax. Not a huge fan of Joey Belladonna's vocals...but this is still a pretty classic album.

Probably translates well to a live show, attracting longtime following fans. A bit too clinical and clean to begin with, but losses up and gets funner as the album goes on. really like the music to ‘I am the Law’, but vocals are pretty annoying

Like most thrash I can appreciate the technical skill, and in this album the lyrics have more variety and invention than the run of the mill, but the style just doesn't do anything for me, and a fair bit of it felt awfully monotonous, though there were some standouts.

I feel like the farther away I get from this period of heavy metal, the worse I assume it will be. There's actually a decent musical element to this, which I don't hate. Pretty good for a metal album.

Better than expected

great guitar and drums but the singing had little musicality or interesting meaning

Doesn’t get any more metal

Fast af

Heavy Drums and heavy guitars put together with top production quality. Has many pop reference and is a tribute to Cliff Burton. It's definitely a change of pace for this list. Although technically interesting many of the songs blend together.

Mörk Borg af

Spotify. Not my thing.

I didnt expect to enjoy this at all, but honestly it surprised me. Its incredibly energetic, and unlike on other metal albums that Ive listened to (and hardcore punk), the speed didnt bother me as much on this one.

If they had a different vocalist and lyricist this might be alright.

Ah yes the Big 3 of Thrash Metal! Metallica, who became the best-selling Metal band of all time by far; Slayer, who took the genre even further in its speed and aggression; Megadeth, who began out of spite of Metallica and are kinda there I guess. All of them have made vital contribution to Metal, especially when it comes to its acceptance in the mainstream... Wait... What do you mean it was the Big *4* of Thrash Metal? Anthrax? What?! Key tracks: I Am the Law

I really tried to listen to the whole album, but just couldn't do it. Not saying it is a bad album, it just isn't for me.

No this isn’t for me.

A solid thrash album which is let down by the vocalist. I've never gotten along with Joey Belladonna's vocal style. It just sounds far too nerdy.

I can't channel my internal edgy teen enough to get behind this one.

As expected, to my ears it is generic trash, sorry thrash metal. Nothing to get remotely excited about. At least it is more palatable than many acts from this genre.

Heavy metal music here from Anthrax, or perhaps thrash metal. They took on some serious topics with their lyrics, so they get credit for that. Unfortunately the music, although fast and loud, seemed ordinary to me.

Boring, one note

Yeah, kinda meh. More punk than thrash, which is why I give it a 2.

Preferita: medley

ive said it before during this experiment - thrash metal isn't my jam. its a good album, but not one that i would really ever come back to. nothing against Anthrax, it just isn't my jam

2 stars on the strength of the musicians. This would have been a 3 if the album was instrumental. Hate the singing.

Not really my thing

Not my jam but it was cathartic having rage metal in the background on the day i buried my father. 2/5

Liked Metallica back in the day but I am old now and don't like thrash metal so much

Decent just not my genre.

Not good

I guess I don’t get it. It all sounds pretty uniform to my ears. I guess maybe if you really like thrash metal you might like this? I cannot support my opinion with any authority, but this was just not for me. I mean, it’s hard and I’m sure you could mosh to it, but I was pretty bored by the second half and was relieved when it was over.

Metal's not my thing, but there are metal albums I'd enjoy more than this one. For me , thrash metal songs need to be short and ferocious, not six-minute epics that recount the plot of a comic the guy read. Every song on this album is over five minutes long! And as with Metallica, the vocals don't match up to the music. It demands Satanic death metal growling.

reconfirming i am meh on metal, maybe of the better ones though

not my genre

Echt helemaal niets.

No thanks

I didn’t hate this as much as I hate most metal I’ve gotten in this list.

You know this is not my bag and that’s ok

Not bad just not my cuppa tea and therefore this review is obviously biased by own bad taste.

Nothing special about this album. Typical middle-of-the-road metal. Didn’t enjoy it.

bueno no está macabro pero ñe. Skeleton in the closet es nice

About a month ago I "had" to listen to Slayer, thanks to the generator (and the list too of course). I hated every moment of it. I'm rarely offended by anything, but that album was just too much. With that memory in mind, I audibly groaned this morning when Anthrax came up. I've never listened to them, but I just assumed it would be more of the same. Instead what I got was an album of songs that I mostly tolerated. I liked the lyrics I could understand. Besides the lyrical content, I enjoyed much of the music too. What I didn't care for were the vocals. I just found them very 80's metal sounding. Which I guess makes sense as this was an 80's metal album. No actual standout songs, but I liked Among the Living, A Skeleton in the Closet, Indians, and One World more than the rest.

Du métal, pas mon style...

Not that into metal head bangers but it wasn’t like I absolutely hated this one. Had some moments!

I didn't enjoy this heavy metal band. There are some decent guitar riffs but the songs often feel disjointed and the speed metal parts are more annoying than rocking. The singer isn't great, especially when he tries Ian Gillian screams.

i've always considered thrash metal amongst the most boring subgenres alongside death metal et al.

Classic heavy metal, it was fun I didn’t listen all the way through cause it’s totally not my thing, and I didn’t have too much time yesterday.

Decent

I love a lot of Metallica and Megadeth but never really listened to much Anthrax or Testament. I've heard a few Anthrax songs, none of which were on this album. There are some good guitar riffs here but nothing jumped out at me as a classic song. I have a feeling I'd like this album a lot more if I had grown up with it.

It's by no means bad, it's got the energy and some really nice melodies, but if I want some thrash metal, I'd rather listen to Master of Puppets.

Trash metal, but fun sounds. Let down by the vocals, this guy really can't sing. A less good, but also less stupid, Metallica. As this went on my opinion that the instrumentation was better than the vocals only solidified.

Congratulations to Anthrax for screaming for 50 minutes straight!! Seriously, though, this album felt like it went on forever. Not even the highly skilled guitar and drum solos could save it. I also really disliked how much the tempo changed. The whole thing was just an overwhelming, loud mess.

Not offensively bad, but I'm just not a fan of this style. And I think the production contributes to that - it's all guitar, snare / hi-hat and vocals, there's no punch to the bass. After a while, it just sounds like a wasp in a jar - all anger and buzz, no real punch. Not going to come back to this one.

Bands like anthrax, Slayer and Metallica ruined heavy metal because they took it further away from the Blues. In fact, they eliminated the blues Factor altogether which is what made heavy metal enjoyable. At least to me. Long live Led Zeppelin.

Understand why it's in the list - a heavier Metallica but not as good

Generic boring thrash metal. Not my thing

I won't lie only listened to a couple of songs and then turned off.

Wish the music was even faster

2 Stars (5/15)

That's some pretty crazy noodling on the guitar and fast sick beats on the drums. But not something I want to listen to a bunch of times.

not my vibe

I couldn't get behind the production on this.

Day 179 Bit samey after a while Highlights NFL Skeleton in the closet

It’s okay yay

I really like the solos. Sometimes the guitar-work felt more boring than I was expecting. I don't much like the vocals, his voice doesn't feel strong/polished enough when he sings metal-style, and feels artificial/weak when singing more loose/punk-style. Their particular combo of hardcore and metal often felt like it was bringing the weaker aspects of both (lack of polish of hardcore, over-reliance on "big" vocals and driving guitar for metal).

No thanks

It’s metal. Something my mom would like. But it all kinda sounds the same to me.

Aaarrgghh

Inte min sorts hårdrock. Tvåa

Actually ok - very surprising! Not bad to work too

That was a lot of galloping and double bass pedal, tempo barely changed and I definitely listened to a good chunk of it twice when I picked it up again and couldn't remember how far I'd gotten through it. Singer has a bit of an 80s hair metal sound which takes it away from the slayers and metallicas of this world. It sounded quite tinny compared to those which didn't suit the thrash riffs. On reflection, not very good.

not for me

Sounds like the music from Team America.

Loved the Rythm and vibes off Innervisions. You could feel the lines being felt and intentions sung by Stevie in this album. Truly great album.

don't think I would re-listen to

Sounded okay at first, but after an hour for the deluxe version on Amazon music I’m over it

28 of february 1997

Not for me, but I didn't hate the listen.

Hmm. More metal…..can’t wait. Anthrax definitely not my thing back in the day. Thrash just wasn’t for me tbh. Listening now, can see how this must have influenced bands that came later. Just not my cup of tea. 2

Yeah not my thing I’m sorry

Strong 2 if that’s possible lol. I can tell why ppl like this and why it’s praised. But. It is maximally not for me. Like zero percent

Master of Puppets gets a 3 star rating. This is not as good as Metallica. 2 stars. All this album did was stress me out, but its not quite Korn bad, so I'll reward it a bit.

Wish it was 20 minutes shorter, it all started to sound the same real quick, but what I heard I didnt hate. A tighter album wouldve given it an extra star.

A bit too harsh for me.

Ehhhhhhh

I've decided that there must be a reason that each of these albums made it on the 1001 list. If I loved it, I'll give it a 5. If I didn't, I'll still give it points for making it on the list.

Algunos tracks buenos.

Thrash is not for me.

Never heard of this album or artist before. Hmmm. This will either be a metal or arena rock album, which is a judgement I have made entirely from the band's logo. I'm rolling with metal. '87 seems like it would be too late for a list-worthy arena rock album to release. Thrash metal. I'm a genius. Uh oh. This one's looking pretty long. Between punk and metal, I've always respected the two genres for never demanding too much of my time, though I guess that changes today. This was a pretty dull listen. All this album amounted to was the same song repeated ad nauseum. Metal is very restrictive like that. The vocals are simultaneously appropriate for genre while also sounding kinda off. They're a little higher-pitched than the standard. Also kind of weak, too. None of the songwriting or vocal performances struck a chord with me. The title track has a fine instrumental. The classic metal guitar riffs make for a decent enough listen, particularly during the solo at the end of the track. The rest of the songs sound similar to the title track, so I guess they're all fine. Book time. High point for the band. Precursor to rap rock. That's all, really. Wikipedia says that this was a breakthrough for the band and solidified them as a key player within heavy metal. Alright. This seems like a solid pick. I cosign this inclusion.

If every song was two and a half minutes, this would easily be a 5 star.

There was definitely some stuff I liked about this, but an Overkill song autoplayed after the album was done and I liked it more

That was odd. It was kind of like Van Halen trying to do the Beastie Boys.

I like many types of metal. But what I can't get over with thrash albums like this is how every 20 seconds it's like a new song is starting. The rhythm, tempo, melody, drums, guitars, vocals all change. Listening to "Indians" is like listening to a 14 year old in charge of the remote control flicking between MTV channels. Is this lack of commitment simply because none of this actually sounds good enough to listen to for any extended length of time? Probably.

Sounds like a Metallica supporting act from the 80s. All raw, loud, heavy, thrashing that feels unrefined and unremarkable.

Shouting, heavy drums/bass lines, and attemped guitar solos sums up this album.

honestly….a little more entertaining than metallica, still don’t like metal

Not for me. Always makes me a little angry when I listen deeply?

This was ok. Didn't do much for me either way, feels like a 2.5

OK, well, Anthrax is not my thing, but I did listen to the whole album. I guess I can say that there is a definite uniformity of intensity throughout the whole thing which gives it a cohesion. And that's good, I guess.

2.3 Don't think this will be very controversial for those in the know, but Anthrax are probably one of the luckiest bands out there for getting named as one of the "big 4" besides three bands with actual great talent - Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. How on earth Anthrax made it in there I'll never know. Even their best songs - caught in a mosh, Indians etc, wouldn't have been made it on as album filler on most of the early albums by the other three. I love metal and there was not a single track on this album I saved down. I saved down one from Ms. Dynamite the other day ffs. Really, really poor. Possibly the worst metal album we've had on here, and I lament the other appearances that could have made it - Mastodon, Gojira, Opeth, Meshuggah etc. it's like the list owner got to the early 90s and thought that must be it for metal. Ludicrous.

dead metal

Not my taste

I'm really not a thrash metal (or metal in general for the most part) fan but this is ok. It sounds like a more corny and goofy, Saturday morning cartoon theme version of NYHC. If that was my kind of thing I'd really like it, because it's a good album. I just don't like it much. I don't have the wiring in me for this kind of stuff, sorry. Not even sure if I like that style of hardcore that it sounds like most of the time.

Some catchy tunes but a bit much for me.

I like metal, I'm just not sure what case this album is trying to make for itself.

This kind of thing probably isn’t in my wheelhouse. I understand the legacy that a band like this has had on the scene, and it’s good to hear the clearer punk influences on thrash through an album like this this, but I found it repetitive after a while.

They're good at playing fast, but neither the music nor the storytelling got through to me.

I've been recently into guitar heavy songs with crazy guitar solos. I was under the impression that what I was listening to is very heavy and I must admit, I felt rather cool but this album makes me realise that I was listening to some light music. While the guitar is great, I am now dealing with a headache that I did not have when I started the album.

Never been the biggest metal-head. This didn't convert me.

As others said, this wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but it wasn’t good either.

Meh. Too much for me, too much.

Lamentablemente planísimo para mi gusto. Nota: 2.5

Thrash metal? More like Trash metal! hehehe Big 4? More like big BORE! hihi What the fuck are these mismatched vocals lmao Kinda fits the super generic instrumentals and garbage lyrics tho

This just isn’t my thing unfortunately. I never get hyped up by this genre, I just find it lame. Rating: 2.1

Really not a fan of the thrash and speed moments.

Some of the riffs are good. But I can’t stand the vocals. And the drums… all these blast beats… like, I get it… you can play fast…

didnt care for the vocals a bit too theatrical, wish they were heavier lots of songs have have good moments, but feel too long liked: among the living, Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.), imitation of life

melkeen kuin metallika ja megadeth tämä bändi melkein lähestulkoon yhtä miltei samanverran toooosi lähellä antraxi on siellä.. the big 3... metallika megadet sekä antraksi iso 3. kolme isoa josta kaikki puhuu juttelee vesitonkan äärellä puhuu näistä kolmesta the three great ones the big boys heh.. kukakehtaa jutella metallista ja ei mainita näitä KOLMEA tärkeeää. podium paikka kyllä kaikki on näkyvillä heh... punk metal. come here you punks! huutaa poliisimestari (ei juokse, kävelee vaan vimmatusti) ja antraksin pojat näyttää keskaria ja huutaa takaisin: OTA KIINNI POLLA!!! KOPPALAKKI!!!! Medley: A.D.I. / Horror Of It All

Not very good.

Never heard this and better than expected.

Anthrax would have absolutely ruled as an instrumental band

I suppose I could have given this a 1

It’s 80s metal-y. I’m not huge on that genre.

With this album I now have listened a quarter of the entire list! I wish I was as excited for this album as I am for this fact. I've never cared for Thrash Metal, not even when I was a metal-head. It is true that I like 'Reign in Blood' by Slayer, and I used to be a big fan of Metallica's early work, but I've never being interested in this particular scene, and I don't even come back to what I once liked. And it seems that my feelings haven't changed the slightest. This album hasn't done absolutely anything for me and it felt tiring towards the end. I can see people having fun with it. It is fast and a bit angry, but I like my angry music to be way more chaotic and noisy, and this record doesn't hit those nails for me.

Better and worse than I expected. Musically it’s ok, not that into the vocals. The whole thing is just a little homogenous.

I loved this record late middle school. This and State of Euphoria. But I left it behind and it really didn't age well for me unfortunately and isn't something I'd spin today. However! I look back on those times fondly and am thankful this music was around back then.

Cringe

Jud Jud, Jud jud, biddley waaaaa. Smash smash smash.

Not my sort of metal

Pretty heavy, pretty heavy. Good stuff. Pairs well with riding Harleys and picking kids up from school

Thrash isn’t really my thing, but it’s not the worst thing I have ever heard. It’s not even the worst thing I’ve heard in the relatively short period of time I have been doing this challenge. It obviously influenced Faith No More. Of the big four, Anthrax aren’t my favourite, but I would rate them over Megadeth. The songs are too long, and at times are less thrash more playing fast, but overall i didn’t hate. It sounds more like heavy punk, and there is something a bit off about it. It sounds so poor compared to Reign in Blood which was out around about the same time. Overall, it wasn’t terrible but I won’t be revisiting.

Least favorite album to date. Not sure how they made the top 1000. Still, I got a really good workout out of it.

Why would I bother with this when I could just listen to Master of Puppets?

Vocals were too clean for me.

Definitely not for me, I am as far from Thrash Metal in my music taste as Moscow is to Montevideo. Still, some nice production here, even though for a non-metal fan a lot of this sounded samey to me. My favorite song was the title track.

Don’t really get the hype without being a bummer , the guitar is super impressive along with the drums but the vocalist ruins it , he sings way too slow for something so fast

Does anyone else feel as if Anthrax would be a lot better if they weren't a metal band?

Thrash, but nothing memorable.

Headbanger, metal, whatever, I always called this pissed-off-white-boy music since anger and outrage seem the singular emotion expressed - "What do white kids have to be so pissed off about? They were born white already." And it's a fairly large genre.
