Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Never listened to anything by Anthrax before. It’s not really my sort of music, but my barometer for this type of music is ‘is it better than Metallica?’. This is, so it gets 2 starts.

High 2, but still a 2. Just felt flat; others have done it much better.

Pure 80s metal. Too pure for me.

Kareoke, huligan-körer. Taffliga gitarrsolon. Jag gillar verkligen inte sången. Inga låtar som står ut. Pinsamma texter; sämst Indians.

I want to like this more as it is clearly the start of a movement and inspires some great albums but its just slightly too chaotic for me.

p563. 1987. 2 stars. This is what you get if you cross Motorhead with Iron Maiden. Well done of its kind, but there is nothing here that hasn't been done before and better.

Demasiado ruidoso para mi gusto

Never have I come so close to falling asleep listening to metal. Truly ridiculous that anthrax is considered one of the four foundational pillars of thrash metal.

Grow your hair and headbang. I did it once before, but I can't think of it anymore

cringe lyrics and vocals

I'm not a big fan of heavy metal

I like the sound of it but not the vocals and lyrics

Among the Living by Anthrax surprised me — I didn’t hate it! It's full of intense headbanging energy and a lot of shouting, which isn't usually my thing, but I found it more listenable than expected. Thrash metal isn’t a genre I typically explore, so I appreciated that this challenge pushed me out of my comfort zone. While the album overall wasn’t exactly to my taste, I did notice some tracks had a punkish edge and occasional melody that made them more engaging. That said, many of the songs started to blend together for me. The album tends to stick to a single tempo and sound, with little variation in riffs or rhythm, making it hard to distinguish one track from another. Favourite tracks: “I Am the Law” and “Caught in the Mosh” were decent — not instant favorites, but they stood out a bit. Least favourite: By the time I reached track 9, Imitation of Life, I felt like I’d heard enough. Album artwork: Odd, but in a good way — I actually really like it. In the end, it’s not an album I’d revisit, but I’m glad I gave it a try.

This has confounded some of my expectations for the better. A dash of being a little light-hearted and not singing about the putrid stench of baby's rotting flesh, goes a long way. Not to the point of thinking it's a good album mind you. From a critical standpoint it's still overrun with bland chainsaw guitar chugging that does it's best to kill any interest elicited by melodic intros and breaks. I give it credit for making me realise what genius Black Sabbath were. I could edit together a cracking couple of songs out of it. A shade behind Rust in Peace.

Tämähän oli ihan perinteistä kasariheviä yhteiskuntakriittisellä tvistillä. Muuten ihan samanlaista melodista kitaranvingutusta.

I prefer my heavy metal to be a bit closer to home really.

I can respect the talent but this wasn't for me

Very loud even when the volume is low.

A little bit too intense for me.

I usually hesitate to say this about any genre but yep, I feel moved to say that thrash ain’t the genre for me. I can kind of appreciate that it’s good for what it is and they’re technically proficient but I’ll leave this one to the snakebite drinking headbangers

Like if a funeral doom vocalist shit all over C-tier thrash.

not for me... never was much of a thrash fan

Nothing noteworthy, but it was not unbearable. Got my toot tapping occasionally, but that is the maximum positive i can give. Would not even remotely listen to this again

Anthrax's "Among The Living" does not fit into my usual musical preferences, so this was an adventure. While the album features a few intriguing hooks, aggressive guitar work, and driving drumming, I found the lyrics and vocals to be on the weaker side. I cannot state how good or bad this album is within the thrash-metal genre, but it is clear that it does not resonate with me. Kudos to those who enjoy it.

I think someone who likes metal would like this, however I do not like metal. I can appreciate this is a good representation of the genre.

Certainly mosh-able, but I find the vocals to be weak. 50 minutes of thrash metal is too much for any mortal man. Standout track is: “Caught in A Mosh”

I've just heard something worse than this album yesterday that I gave a 1 star to so I felt I had to at least give this an extra star since it wasn't as bad. But still not something I would listen to again since this made me feel like I was having a heart attack.

Meh. I like some of the instrumentals here, but not a fan overall.

Bad production. Terrible drums. Terrible vocals. Not sure what I'm missing but not sure I feel I've missed much with Anthrax.

Didn't particularly enjoy this and I normally like this sort of thing

Bad 80s metal

2.5 Listenable, didn’t hate it, just not really my type of music.

The album cover is interesting, but I just struggle to get into thrasher music. The guitar sequences all sound the same to me. Why not add some distortions and just be shoegaze smh. 2.5 rounded down(?) because it really wasn't good, bad it isn't super bad

This genre (Hard Rock? Metal?) is one where I definitely have strong preferences, but I can't articulate what makes me like some things and dislike others. But this is doing nothing for me. Nothing here seems obviously incompetent. But I just found it a little empty.

It is what it is. Why do these kinds of bands turn the vocals into something so bland if they are trying to be so expressive ? Almost a 1 on Indians alone.

Well hilarious. A song about Judge Dredd and one plea for world peace off a butt-rock thrash metal alum made me giggle. There’s some decent punk rock energy on this record. The musicianship isn’t nearly as high as I was expecting for a metal album on this list-is call don’t know why it’s on here. But I listened to it and laughed. Will likely not revisit.

I can appreciate this as a work of art in its own right that was important in it's genre of music. That said, it's not my personal cup of tea. I've never been a fan of thrash music, or any music where the instrumentation (while impressive) overpowers or drowns out the lyrics. It is also a product of its time and comes across SO 80's.

There is nothing here that standsout for me. 2 stars or D+.

I'm sure this is great for the genre, but it's just not my style.

I don't know much about thrash and can't say much about Anthrax. My meagre understanding was that they were big dumb rockers among the Big Four. Metallica were the exemplar; Megadeth were technicians; Slayer were extremists; and Anthrax were dumb. I don't know who told me that, but I guess they meant Anthrax are fun and sort of sloppy. Anthrax aren't dumb though. The obvious influence of hardcore makes everything more immediate than those other bands: the live feel, the short bursts of guitar solo, the barrage of chords, sometimes sludgy, sometimes sharp. Each song is like an album's worth of Black Flag songs put together. The metal tradition is more apparent in Joey Belladonna's high Halfordian vocals. The two styles meet in the subject matter, straight-forward social commentary with conscience - very Fugazi, but also there in Sabbath. Megadeth may take the germ of War Pigs and turn it into conspiracy theory, but Anthrax seem to get the point and sing it plain. Whoever told me Anthrax were dumb was probably also the person who told me that grunge was the meeting of punk and metal, but Anthrax were already there and sound nothing like Soundgarden, Green River, or Tad. Then the big four of grunge don't sound any more alike than the big four of thrash. Probably not worth comparing them, because, for all the enjoyment of Among the Living, I didn't enjoy it as much as Rust in Peace. 2.5 This one is hard to judge. There is much more declamation and call and response shouts than melody here. While that adds another layer of primitivism which isn’t inappropriate to thrash metal it doesn’t leave the casual listener much to grab hold of; Metallica and Megadeth even at their thrashiest are more accessible than this. I still enjoyed it well enough - if it is a little two-dimensional at times it does both of those dimensions well: it’s fast and it’s ugly. I’ll take it. 2/5

mehhh I guess Metallica and Megadeth on their own weren’t enough to sustain the genre. Anthrax is very clearly only for the heads.

I think I only made it all the way through two songs? This isn't really for me. It could be my current mood, I suppose. I'm sick today and feeling slow and beat up. I'll toss this on the pile to give it a second listen because I definitely see merit here. What I did appreciate was the clear vocals at the top of the mix and that these guys are clearly all excellent musicians. I think they do a good job at what they do, and I can definitely see places other bands have drawn inspiration from Anthrax. I wouldn't blame anyone for liking this album. 2

Not the worst metal but still not my thing

The music is pretty good. A lot of really interesting tempo/meter changes make it engaging. But it's otherwise really bland and not good. The singer is oddly not built for metal, in my opinion. Like, he doesn't have the power that I want/expect from a thrash metal singer. Yeah, the album never really does anything special. There are moments where it sounds like they could be about to do something great, but either they never develop the idea further, or they go back to a more basic sound. It just ends up not really doing anything interesting for me. Favorite Song(s): Among the Living

Meh. The voice ruins it for me.

A weird choice of band and album for this list. I can understand a representative album from Metallica and Slayer, Megadeth also somehow fits the bill, but Anthrax is just a bit too much. The vocal is terrible, even compared to Dave Mustaine. Music sounds like a bad off takes from previously mentioned three bands and no one actually cares about lyrics. A really weird and disappointing choice.

Didn't really care for it.

Sounded like a discount Metallica. Not about it.

I like metal, but this is not very good. It's just strictly dominated by Metallica - tries to do the same thing, but does it less well in every way. In particular, they have no change-of-pace of any kind - although that's probably a virtue for their fans - and they have fewer soaring moments, with less focus on instrumental virtuosity overall. Basically it's sludgy. Not for me.

this cant be real

Some meaty riffs, but the vocals are lacking and it just feels a bit... silly

This is what happens when you hand a comic book nerd a guitar and too much coffee. Riffs on riffs on riffs. Relentless and chugging along like a steamroller made of power chords, and lyrics that feel like they were written on a Trapper Keeper in detention. It’s got some of that early Metallica speed, but without the same bite. A couple of moments grab your attention, but it’s mostly just a blur of headbanging with no real payoff. Fun in the moment, forgettable after. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - Caught In A Mosh

Not my jam. I could not really hear much variation from song to song AT ALL and felt like a high pass was applied too much during the mix.

mah? un po’ too much ma neanche troppo male, in generale not my cup of tea

Not really for me. All merged into one song.

Lite väl brötigt. 2/5

Just not for me

I like the genre, but I have never been an Anthrax fan. This album did not change my opinion. 3/10

tracks themselves weren’t basic but altogether the songs sounded pretty much the same, i don’t know i didn't like it that much x

Gear: Dunu SA6 Artwork: ✋🎩⬛ Production: 🧏‍♂️📏💩 Music: 🤘⏭️🤷‍♂️ Rating: 🐌(🐌)/5

Blown away this band is spoken of in the same breath as Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. So average and they whining vocals are tough to listen to 2*

cornball metal to the n-th degree i’ll take this over like Metallica Cumshot Album but this is bargain bin big 4 core

I really don’t like metal but this wasn’t too annoying.

No thanks

If I was in 6th grade—pimples and orthodontics—I may have liked this. Wrong demographic these days. I do envy the drummer. He is going to live a long time with his off-the charts cardio profile.

Thrashy but not really in the way that I like

Welcome to some powerful metall

Among the Living is a tough listen. The vocals are grating, and the riffs blur together, making every song feel like a repeat of the last. It’s chaotic without being memorable, a disappointing effort overall.

Yeah. No.

Don’t mind it for 3 minutes This album is a lot longer than 3 minutes

It was going okay until the singing started. Comedy gold. The sound isn't for me, fair enough, but I still don't understand why all these metal bands have to have their lyrics written by 13 year olds. Bonus star for making me laugh out loud a couple times.

Great guitar riffs. Is there any connection between them and the vocals? Sounds like they weren't even listening to the tracks while recording, just singing their balls off. The drumming reminds me of the story that Bonham once bought a double bass kit. After the first time he used it, Page found his drum tech and told him that if he ever gave John two bass drums again, he would no longer have a job with Led Zeppelin. Ultimately, like Deep Purple, I may not like what these guys are doing, but kudos to them for knowing what they want to sound like and going for it without giving a s&% what prigs like me think.

My favorite Metallica album yet! 1.5!

A lot of the same metal sound. I am/was actually a metal-head, but this is too repetitive.

of the thrash metal I’ve been forced to listen to because of this project this is the most tolerable

I tried to pinpoint why I can't get into trash metal, and I think it's because of the monotonous guitar sequences. For music that's meant to be high energy it's surprisingly tedious and dull. It's not unlistenable for sure, but I just didn't find anything particularly interesting about it. It felt more like one long song with barely any tempo or melodic changes (the drummer did a great job though). 2.5 stars

Tracks reviews (my favourite segment): 1. Among the Living - I loved the main parts but then the guy started talking... I don't like the voice and some parts of the song get goofy. The lyrics aren't great either. If the rest of the songs have more of the main musical progression of this song I'm sure they will be great, and this one could have been... / 2. Caught In A Mosh - It was alright. I definitely liked some parts of the song more than others / 3. I Am The Law - bro is not harrier dubois skull (someone forward this joke to talha via email). Song is wack and very underwhelming / 4. ? - same as last but when they start shouting it goes... still mild but yk / 5. A Skeleton In The Closet - okay this album might be wack / 6. Indians - yapping and pretentious. bad / 7-9. skipped through idc anymore I think this album MAJORLY misses the mark on theme/vibe(?), lyrics, voice, and a lot of the music. I'm realizing that I quite like thrash metal, but not this. First song was the best and....well see my review of that. I'll give it a 2 since I enjoyed parts of it ig and I want to see more from this genre potentially

Was ok.

Sounds like something I would’ve pretended to like as a teen to piss off my mum.

Never really cared much for Anthrax. Maybe they pioneered this sound, but I doubt it.

I get it, this is some rad thrash metal, and Anthrax propagates prolific kick ass t-shirts. I'm right there with Beavis & Butthead moshing on the couch while an ear-searing video comes on. But actively listening to an entire album is like a Drano enema of the head. Plus, it started to invoke an association with Metallica, with whom I'm sour since they did a cameo on Billions as congenial to the asshole main character on the show. 'Which asshole? Can you be more specific?' But, Anthrax gets a pass on that (perhaps) undeserved conflation since they colabed with Public Enemy on 'Bring the Noise', which was fun for one song to mix it up. I doubt I could listen to a whole album of that though either.

A few interesting riffs, but I can’t get on board with the speed metal

Dont really like his voice and the music was a little 1d too.

I used to llisten this kind of music when I was younger but this is just a bunch of sounds and shouting. I don't like my music being as rough, although there seems to be melody in the basis of what is happening.

Oh boy, this one is embarrassing. I used to like this album in high school, but haven't heard it in many years. It is so bad. The music is simplistic and the lyrics are cringeworthy. And how many songs based on Stephen King stories do you need on an album? Their answer is "more than one", apparently. I'm not giving this a "1" for a couple reasons. One is nostalgia, and the other is that this isn't actually unlistenable. I was cringing, but I was never totally hating what was playing. I'm saving the ones for way worse albums.

2 - Energy, fast, loud and I'm still bored listening...

I didn't find this particularly difficult to listen to as I kinda expected I would, but I also didn't really think much of it. There were only a couple of moments where it managed to distract me from my work, and that feels a little bit disappointing from a metal album. 2.4/5

Kunnon tuplabasarit!

Anthrax didn't appeal to me when I was younger, but I wasn't really into thrash or heavy music at the time. Fast forward 30 years, and I'm very much into heavy music, but I still can't get into this. It just sounds very messy, and very antiquated. It sounds like a garage band, really. it's just very much a thrash album of its time. I realize Anthrax are hugely influential and hugely important in the progression of heavy metal, but it's just not a great album. 2.5 stars.

Turgid, pompous overblown. No thanks.

Gritones y mismo ritmo frenético.

I can see why this might have been influential. I just didn’t like it very much.

It was alright. Perhaps because of the age, it didn't feel groundbreaking. Time changes were all over the place. Vocals were lacking. It felt like I was listening to Generic Metal Album #22342. I'd have given it 1 star, but songs about Stephen Kings, "The Stand" and "Apt Pupil" as well as a song about Judge Dredd pushed it up to a 2 for me.

Hmm not a thrash metal guy. Simpsons: No

I've heard some Anthrax in high school. Songs like "Now It's Dark" and the Public Enemy collab "Bring The Noise." I know they are part of the Big 4 (along with Metallica, Megadeath, and Slayer), but I haven't really gotten into them. An open minded listen isn't enough to change my opinion. Chug-a chug-a chug-a. Joey Belladonna does have a decent singing voice for metal, a cross between Iron Maiden, DIO, Motley Crue, and Bad Religion. The guitar riffs and solos are decent when not simply djenting along; the drumming is tight despite how difficult it is to keep up at such a fast pace for so long a time. It definitely takes talent and dedication to write and play these songs, and another sort of talent to convince your bandmates that these songs are worth the effort. Unlike the thrash of early Metallica records, I find the vocal and guitar melodies a bit weak; much of the guitar work appears to be complicated filler, without making a confident musical statement. Not my favorite genre. I can appreciate the talent required to play this, but a must-hear album before you die??? It feels like it was included on this list to fulfill some unsaid metal quota. I'd be curious to see--when this project is all said and done--which albums were eventually removed from the list. I know this one gets my vote.

I. Could. Not. Stop. Laughing. I am sure it was was not the intention of the band to have that effect, but I couldn't help it. The music was just insanely over the top. I would say cartoonish even. It was like a mixture of metal and punk. I did have fun listening to it, and it was my first listen ever to Anthrax. If a group of werewolves were to get coked up and make an album, I am absolutely sure this is what it would sound like. My favorites were 'Among the Living' and 'Indians'.

Vaguely annoying

didn't do much for me

Not for me 2/5

Gives me frat-rock vibes

Not as bad as I was initially anticipating, but still not good enough to listen to ever.

Not my thing

they seem a parody of metal

I don't like it - But I don't dislike it as much as some of the other junk on this list.

I don't dislike Anthrax, I don't like Anthrax. All the songs sound pretty much the same to me.

like the Motörhead album this was a lot more listenable than I thought it was going to be but it just got really boring towards the end... 2.5/5

Not my thing

Felt very Master of Puppets. Not really my genre, but I can appreciate the genre-building they were doing. Two stars.

Yeah. Uhm. I lose interest in this very quickly. I mean. It's not total shit, it just doesn't interest me, and I'm not entirely sure why this is considered a groundbreaking album. So. 1 star? 2? 1 seems unfair.

Sounds like the Aquabats with whinier lyrics and less Mooncheese.

Three stars for the best musical tribute to 2000AD and ol stony face himself. Two stars for the rest of the album which does at least frequently touch something like a tune despite being thrash through and through. So 2.5 and not feeling generous.

I can't believe this is on this list, when I Am The Law is the only good song here. There's so much better in terms of metal around this time, and with better sounding frontmen. I was on a decent roll of good albums too.

Not my music

I dunno, pretty basic metal sounding. Nothing fancy pulls me into liking this very much. 2 stars.

This made me feel like getting trampled in a mosh pit

I don't get it. They're making a statement. 2/5

I like that the bad guy from poltergeist 2 is on the cover

I could not even listen until the end. And I usually love metal. But well. Not this kind apparently, feels like redneck metal somehow.

First 2 songs are standard thrash metal songs that aren’t really distinguishable. However “I am the law” tears the first two songs up. Great transitions, vocals and lyrics.

Metal just isn’t my genre but this seems like good metal for those who like it

Some technically impressive guitar and especially drums, but probably not something I'll return to as I've learned I'm not a thrash metal fan. Seems specifically engineered to appeal to men who would sooner dress like our man on the cover every day than listen to anything that doesn't feature guitar or that might express feelings other than anger or lust.

Still what I would consider heavy metal, but at least not scary heavy metal

Incredibly frantic and not really worth listening to twice.

Okay if your thing is loud incoherent screaming.

I can’t believe I used to listen to them and love them. Damn I am Getting old.

I appreciated the album just not my style of music.

Bit of thrash metal. Not super keen. Obviously there’s always some good guitar work in these albums but there’s not enough of a melody and the drums are so fast it just feels exhausting. Not for me.

I mean, I've honestly been trying to get into metal and like in a lot of it.However this is just fucking unlistenable

Ehh not my thing. Like the other metal albums on this list, I enjoy the instrumentation but when they start singing it's just so wimpy.

Not really for me. Talented musicians and song writers though! I’d just rather listen to Iron Maiden if I was ever in the mood for this kind of music

I get it - hard, fast, loud. Really nothing musical about it, but I guess that is the point. I'm sure teen-age boys love it.

Bleh. Good metal anyway

Many of the guitar intros sound the same. Good for head banging.

The main problem I have with this is that it is terriblely boring. Once you get the central gist of it, it's just relentless, aggressive two-drum, guitar thrash. This is a 50 minute album with 9 tracks - so not only is it boring, it's long. I can't fault their execution of the genre, they are adept and do what they set out to do. It just bores the tits off me.

I'm just not the target market here. Can't fault it technically, has the emotional range of my 15 year old son.

I know of Anthrax, but possibly never heard a complete track from the band. I knew of their tribute to Judge Dredd ("I Am the Law"), and their cover of Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise" (not on this album). I can recognize Scott Ian from all of his pop-culture appearances, but Among The Living was my first venture into actually listening to Anthrax. Thrash metal is not my jam. I made it through the album, but I had a hard time distinguishing between tracks. I could not imagine sitting down to listen to this record more than once. My brain was trying to tune out before the album was over. I couldn't even pay attention to the lyrics, so I might have additional reasons to be dissatisfied with the album. I'm not upset that I listened to the album, but once was enough (¿more than enough?).

My friends and I used to have a joke when going to see metal bands. There was always a headliner, and usually an opener who was a band that toured with them and was known. Then you'd sometimes have a bonus local opener who no one ever knew of and they were always called And Guest on the poster. So we said it was the same band and that And Guest was a touring band and changed their style and look every show but always had the same 100% energy and no real quality vs everyone else performing with them. These guys feel like And Guest.

I'm not sure these songs have any reason to be around 5 minutes each. Some fun tracks but like 3 minutes or less per track would make this an overall better experience.

Well... That was thrash metal. It's not all bad, but maybe just didn't totally click for me.

time is no gentleman for any kind of excess.

Helt tuffa gitarr solon!

Not my cup of tea. I do appreciate the talent specifically drums and bass. Definitely one of those you have to be in the right mood to listen and for me - I am never in that mood.

metal med lynhurtige trommer, skarpe guitarriffs,

I’m trying. I’m really trying to appreciate metal. But when I listen to it, I don’t feel any excitement or interest, I just tend hear hyper-masculine posturing. There’s something weirdly empty or sparing about this album. Like, it all sounds too samey. Everyone is good at their instruments I guess. But I don’t really like it. I do appreciate the political nature of the lyrics on this album, rather than the typical metal imagery that I find so dorky. So they get some bonus points for that.

So this was not my favourite album but I can see why people might enjoy this music. Not for me at all but not the worst thing ever.

Nah. Thrash metal I just don't like at all - the double-kick drum speed and relentlessness of it... I know that's the point. It really is a jackhammer to the skull. Not taking anything away from these guys who - holy crap - are fantastic musicians. Credit to them for the talent and complexity, as well as the obvious Stephen King nods - and I can usually sit through a track. Usually. It's just not my thing musically at all. 4/10 2 stars.

Riffs are good, no idea why every fucking song is 5+ minutes. 2.5/5

Been a while Anthrax... Not since the infancy of my Metallica fandom have I revisited any of your records. For once, it was me, not Tred, who struggled with the production. My ears have grown so used to excellent metal production, that hearing a thrash metal album from this era made me pine for days when I simply enjoyed angry man making sounds. Slightly inferior to Metallicas thrash albums of the same era, but I respect this band. Also, Indians is a less awesome Run To The Hills, thematically.

Felt like the same song over and over again.

Good job with the drums I suppose. Not for me.

Not for me.

Just no.

I once saw all of the 'Big Four' thrash metal bands (Metallica, Megadeath, Slayer and Anthrax) on the same bill (Sonisphere 2011). All four put on good shows, but Anthrax' set was perhaps the least memorable. This album has leaves me with a similar feeling. It's competent and well made, but missing a bit of magic. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Indians Date listened: 21/11/23

Metal just really isn't my genre. Even songs whose tune I can kinda jive with tend to overstay their welcome. It was nice to have an album with some energy to it cuz the last couple have been really slow but even still not a big fan.

I don’t do thrash metal, it’s just noise

Not bad but not for me

Even if I was in the mood for some thrash and even in the best of times you have to force me to listen to Anthrax. There's so much Metallica and Motorhead on this list, it's all starting to blend together. I'm at home sick and the last thing I wanted to hear was some high speed heavy metal pounding in my head, so I honestly wasn't in the mood. The music is fine and it's not the worst thing I've heard here, but why is Anthrax considered essential?

Man, this one feels like a dud. Not interesting AT ALL, the fact this is one of the first metal albums I get makes me a little concerned that they're going to be a lowlight of this list. Also shoutout to the fact I got Marvin Gaye after this. 3.5/10

Wel aardig, maar veel te gedateerd.

enjoyed the intense instrumentals, all blended together and sounded the same though. instrumentals good the rest not super attention grabbing

A rather basic thrash album - context is key here. Knowing that these guys were the among the first, entertaining crowds before they even recorded their first studio album, makes the album worthwhile. Other than that, it is basic thrash metal that has me wondering if it stood out in 1987, and makes me think there is a reason Anthrax is the least memorable of the Big Four of thrash metal.

Wow so cool and deep.

This album sounds like Metallica if you stripped that band of melody and exceptional guitar playing. The solo on “Horror of it all” was pretty good but was more about speed than taste, which lots of hard rock/thrash metal suffers from. Not for me.

Metallica albums and rust in peace are the high water marks for me in this genre and this one fell far far short of the mark. It had some of the most annoying vocals of any of these thrash albums—which is saying something—and there weren’t any songs where the guitar work/production stood out to me

Interesting piece dedicated to the death of Metallica's Cliff Burton. They seem to have lost their friend but found their own sound amongst the grief as this was the album that propelled them to arena metal. I enjoy the elements of punk and other hard core material, but the album begins to drag, especially with every song being nearly 5 minutes or longer

god, this is so lame I’m sorry but I can’t rate this any higher than a 4/10

can't really get into this but that's ok! most songs banged until the vocals came in...

It was like listening to the same song for 50 minutes. Sorry, guys. 2

Instrumentals were good, heavier metal of the late 80s. Did not care for the vocals.

It's a face-melter alright. Impressive work on the guitar and drums. I'm sure this is good for getting you pumped up for a strenuous activity or rocking out in a mosh pit, maybe not as great for the casual listener.

I did not expect a thrash album on here! My favorite part of it was the equally unexpected wikipedia entry for Dan Spitz, who brought some MONSTER riffs to this mayhem. "Dan Spitz is an American musician best known for his work as the lead guitarist of the thrash metal band Anthrax from 1983 to 1995 and from 2005 to 2007. Spitz also founded the Christian music group Red Lamb, which was known for lyrics on autism awareness. Spitz has earned Swiss and American degrees in luxury mechanical watchmaking and micro-mechanical engineering, certified as watchmaker instructor for the North American operations of Swiss watch company Chopard." Thrash metal, autism awareness, and luxury mechanical watchmaking. A tale as old as time.

I'm no fan of metal and I know why. It is just too forced. Don't really get the love for Anthrax here.

The only thing I knew about Anthrax was Scott Ian being on every VH1 show back in the day. It could’ve stayed that way, this kind of sucked.

Oh no..

This music is so stupid. Just random sounding power chords with Not-Metallica-But-Striving-To-Be-Metallica rhythmic galloping, bonehead lyrics sung by a shit singer. Just dumb.

Dates now, but still some good tracks.

Not terrible, but not enjoyable for me. Also, not funny enough to make up for the sounds I don’t like.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: it was ok, just a bit too long for me Favourite song: didn’t have one

Typical 80's hair metal. Meaning it sucks. Long live Zep!

Holy shit this is dumb. I wasn't sure how I'd react to this but I was looking forward to it. The first song started and had a pretty good riff, but then as soon as the singing started the quality fell through the floor. I can't believe how stupid every song on this album is. The guitar work is good enough to save this from one star but sheesh.

I would enjoy most metal a lot more is the singers were actually able to sing

Metal is hit or miss with me. Overall, I liked the guitar riffs and the vocals were okay. The thrash part just does not do it for me at all.

Too thrashy. Unlike Metallica there is barely any good melodies or memorable riffs

Just not my thing. I can appreciate the musical prowess, though.

Nothing special thrash metal.

This sounded like an album from a band in a tv show

Good album! Not my favorite thrash metal but still always into this genre! Not a bad listen just not my fav, not the biggest fan of Anthrax either.

eh not awful but i just don’t like heavy metal

There are some good moments on this album, but as a whole I found it both loud and uninteresting. The lyrics are an interesting departure from your typical heavy metal music, but they're mostly just shouted over the same chugging guitar and frantic percussion the whole time.

I guess I didn’t hate it, but overall this was not an album that I found any interest in. I would prefer to not hear it again.

Too thrashy for my liking.

Not my jam.

Argghhh

Terrible, but somehow better than expected.

Real spotty teenage stuff. I had to listen to it in tiny bursts with the volume down. I like that you can make out the lyrics and enjoyed the Judge Dredd song. Immature, not (just) in a poobumwilly way, but like if they kept pursuing this, it could grow into something better.

Admittedly, I did (mildly) headbang throughout this, lots of good riffs, but doubt I'd listen to the whole album again.

Not a huge metal fan, seems generic to me. My loyalties lie with Sabbath

While I can appreciate Anthrax's place in the history of metal, I just really dislike speed/trash metal. Lyrically it's big "I'm 14 and this is deep." Like I get what they're saying, but it's as basic and boiled down as possible. And again with the flat vocal style. It all sounds the same.

It's alright, bits of it were good, but it's not amazing and not my thing

Nothing really stood out to me in this album. Some of the guitar was good, but most of the sounds and lyrics were unimpressive and unmemorable. Certainly not the worst music I’ve ever heard, but I didn’t particularly like it

Vibes of a poor mans’s Metallica

Gets a bit samey, not keen on the production.

why you screaming bro

Pretty bad 2

It's like when they briefly changed the name of Coco Pops to Choco Krispies. Nobody cared for it and it made them taste like betrayal.

Somehow I never really listened to Anthrax. The vocals are pretty off-putting to me.

Incel nursery rhymes

More enjoyable than I expected. A bit repetitive. and doesn't have as much character as others in a similar vein, but it's not unpleasant to listen to. 2/5

Not for me. Favorite track - Caught in a Mosh Least favorite tracks - everything else

Mostly boring, some of it was fun but the lyrics were goofy as hell and took away from the whole thing.

4/10. Not bad, but nothing about it really struck me as good either.

Pretty bad mixing of the vocals and generally too long. 4/10

I paused for about a week because I couldn't bring myself to listen to this. But I steeled myself with an OPEN MIND. The verdict? I'll never listen to this again but it's not terrible, just not my thing. Best song is Indians.

Sounds like it's trying to fill a gap somewhere between Metallica and Guns n' Roses. That gap did not need filling.

Bit too much for me

Errr I was going to give it a 1, but I liked 1 song, I really can’t get into metal

Yeah...fast heavy metal. You gotta like thrash to like this. It's not for me but I kinda admire it the riffs as they have some joy in them. It's half way between a fast Sabbath and the Pistols. The production is surprisingly bright.. Is it a great album ? Prob not. 2

Nije da sam bas uzivala

inače nije ovo moja šalica čaja, i još uvijek nije, ali je slušljivo. skoro trojka.

I like my metal a bit more melodic and varie-paced than this, which I found a bit relentless. Some good bits and clearly good musicians, but lacking in light and shade

Started off well but got old quickly.

I just don't find thrash metal interesting. The album wasn't enjoyable to listen to

Sounds outdated and sometimes ridiculous.

Not as bad as i thought itd be but its no megadeath

What if Metallica but worse? Extra star for the dredd song 3

kind of strange 2.5/5

Not bad but really just not my thing.

Thrash tires so easily. Just loud fast aggression over and over. Fine in spurts, hard for an hour. Especially when the vocals are mid.

Listened to on 8/18/22 2.5/5 Favorite song: Among the Living Heavy metal was a bit too much for me but the instrumentality was phenomenal

More death metal. Didn’t hate quite as much as Slayer.

Not awful but not really anything I’d like to listen to again. 3/10

Amish thrash metal, which is...a choice? It avoids a one rating, which is about the biggest compliment I can give it.

The third of the big 4 of thrash metal I've had to review, and it suffers from the same problem that afflicts Metallica and Megadeth's recordings of the era: by codifying thrash, they made it staid and predictable. Now, that doesn't mean the music sounds bad per se; it just means that, in retrospect, it sounds unadventurous. In terms of the influences on display, I distinctly identified Iron Maiden, with certain shrieking guitar solos and lyrical themes. And let's concentrate on those intriuging lyrical themes. I Am The Law is a song about Judge Dredd. That's it. It gives an overview of the Judge Dredd conceit, and nowt else. I'm not sure how I'm meant to react to that. Is a plot synopsis a good basis for a song? Then comes Efilnukifesin (N.F.L.) (Nise fukin life backwards), an anti-drug song that, in its favour, does provide some grisly imagery, but also hits as sanctimonious. However, the most striking song on the album is Indians, part of that aw-bless tradation of metal songs based on the plight of Natives Americans. Of course, this tradition doesn't avoid stereotypes of the noble, stoic Indian, but Anthrax could have avoided screaming "Wardance!" at the bridge, and they definitely could have avoided moshing in a plains Indian headdress in the video. Now, accusing metal of being thick is to miss the pointsome what : it's meant to be coarse, direct and reptilian. But if you're going to be thick, it's probably best to avoid message songs. Yeah, I talked myself out of liking this album. Mind, I don't care that I did.

Guitar parts are cool, but not really my thing overall. Vocals are bad.

Slightly less heavy and a fair bit more punky than expected (I think the vocal style contributes heavily to both these things), but otherwise it's pretty standard metal. It's fine while I'm listening to it but I struggle to remember it at all afterwards.

16th March 2022 Listened on the way in to the office then came home and watched arsenal Liverpool. 0-2. Title on. Weird one because I started this to discover new music and experience new sounds which this is. So I appreciate that but a bit heavy for me. Although metal heads are always the nicest people.

noisy :)

Technically proficient. But too hard, fast, loud, and short for me.

No. Not all that for me, thanks.

Not as bad as Metallica's listing I had to listen to, but still well short of the melody I prefer in my music

Ehhhh.

I like another type of rock.

Beats remind me of Iron Maiden, missing the vocals badly though. 2.3

This album has made me realise I don't like metal that much. Love the instrumental parts but cannot vibe with the vocals.

Det låter som en budgetvariant av metallica.

Too hardcore for me, sounds a bit flat, but interesting background to the album.

Not my jam. I like some metal but this isn’t it.

Hard core metal. The singer sounds better than the Sepultura guy at least. This is ok. Lots of talent in there - drummer is insane. Guitar is driving everything. NFL made me laugh. Some songs are just derivative, like Skeleton in the closet. I'm giving it 2 stars, but that's like 5 stars for this genre.

CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA

I honestly can’t tell if this is a cover band. So many of the songs sound the same: exact same tempo and drums. Not sure how this became seminal in the genre.

I’ve been shouted at and I feel angry

Not for me

Bad metal.

Huulu störande hugh hat? I en av sångerna helt based gitarrdel i en annan dock 2/5 ja börjar btw from nu me att måst dom lyssnas före död eller ej. Den här måst int!

Mostly disparate elements that don't form a cohesive sound, occasionally odd mixing too. I hope the drummer enjoyed himself, at least

Every song sounds the same and has very little emotional depth imo. Don't like it aside from some funny lines.

Just a bunch of shouting people 2/5

- definitely dry mixing - strong pace and energy - not the strongest anthrax album but maybe the most influential?

nicht so mein Ding

But much for a Saturday morning.

You can smell the monster energy drink sweating out of every pour of this album. Its not the worse of its genre as there are elements of an actual fucking tune on each track. Not my genre. Can't really mark in fairly. I like the cover so extra point for that. 2/5

Metallica but not as good

good band drug down by a bad drummer

It is one of the better meatal albums I've heard, but I still don't find it nice.

This is putting me in a bad mood. DNF.

Althoug having done the sound for them, in 1984 I think, on one concert in the Netherlands, this is not my music. I could bare to listen to the whole album to pick up memories.

I wouldn't call this an album you have to listen to before you die. Maybe it represents a genre that you should listen to, so that you know it exists. Like in the way you might try to share all of Earths music to an alien. I don't hate Antrax style metal at all, it's just not my thing. With the notable exception of Bring the Noise with Public Enemy. Aaaaaaaah shit!

Not my cup of tea, but had glimpses of Melody in places.

There are catchy riffs, I guess. From a general standpoint I struggle to get behind this genre, and this album did not seem to show me anything different to what I've already heard.

No, just no...anybody else getting a headache during the constant repetition of the words 'cry for the Indians' on the song titled, "Indians"? Then the same repetitive yelling of 'one world' on "One World" ugh! At least I didn't have to listen to the Deluxe Album.

didn't even bother - do not need a 2 day head ache

It’s was very loud

Pas client.

I can appreciate parts, but no. 1
