All Hope Is Gone

The last good Slipknot album, but probably the weakest of their firsts. Still one hell of a ride!

I've been a Slipknot for so long... but I can't find any logical reasons why this album should be on this list. The first Slipknot was a totally breakthrough new sound, Iowa is considered a masterpiece of violence and darkness, Vol. 3 is their most notable album in terms of hits and having mastered their sound. All Hope Is Gone is great, but it wasn't bringing something new or better than their 3 first ones.

I thoroughly enjoy hard/heavy music - so Zeppelin, Sabbath, Nazareth, UFO, Iron Maiden, Tool, etc. - are all in my wheelhouse, but speed and thrash metal, have never really appealed to me... The songs on this album that simply trying to play as fast as possible, along with less-than-serviceable vocals - did nothing for me... Just because a drummer has mastered the double bass pedal from a speed perspective, doesn't mean that you should use it all the time... That said, the moments that I enjoyed on this album, were the ones where things were changed up a bit... Slower tempo, and much cleaner vocals (i.e. not sure if it's the same dude who growl/screams, that also did the cleaner, more melodic vocals) were the songs that I gravitated to... Be tracks IMO were the run of "Sulfur", "Psychosocial", & "Dead Memories" early in the album... Also enjoyed "Snuff", and then the back-to-back of "Childe Of Burning Time" & "Vermilion - Part 2" near the end of the album were also pretty well-done...

i actually enjoyed the music my problem with this genre is the unnecessary aggressive shouting from men

Do not like Punk and Hardrock

Slipknot ditches nu metal, and in the process loses some of what made them stand out. Still, frontman Corey Taylor carries a sufficient menace in his vocals and the arrangements pack a punch.

Wow I hate this

the best i can say is i gave it a shot. it's not the worst thing i've had to listen to but i can really say it is not my favorite to come across my desk. really, it is just bottled up angst that is reflected in a way that my angst was not. i find it pretty unrelatable, and although i can be convinced on a lot of metal instrumentation, the growl vocals are something that never suit my music preferences. sorry to all my depressed friends from middle school but i didn't get it then and i still don't get it now.

Yes! I only really knew the first Slipknot record and a few of the hits, but this is a great record all-round. Love the production, super riff-heavy, just great. Favourite tracks: Gematria, Sulfur, Psychosocial, Vendetta.

I was jamming to this one. Great head-banging riffs. I appreciate how they balance the intense screamed vocals with more melodic vocals but I also don’t love the more melodic singer. His parts can feel a little cheesy or something. Insane drums! That double bass assault is ridiculous! Solid overall and I respect it but it’s not something I’m going to return to.

Ok ok ok hear me out- Slipknot deserves to be on this list and I think they deserve to be on this list twice, for their self titled album and for "Iowa". This album might not even be their 3rd best album (from my memory, I'm not a current listener really), but I will give it a good listen. "Psychosocial" was the single (i think?) from this album, and it has some cool moments. If I'm remembering correctly, this was when Corey Taylor actually started to sing more in Slipknot tracks- something that he kind of reserved more for his other band Stone Sour. Beyond that, it's not a bad song, and it has some moments that are pretty cool, like the breakdown. I think seeing this album is a let down for me on this list. Slipknot is corny as hell these days but when they came out, they were seen as a super fresh band that really did a lot for heavy metal. Seeing this album here makes me think that either this is the only time they will be on the list (which like I said, this is their 3rd best album AT BEST), or they will have 3 entries on this list which is probably too much. Please have their self titled or "Iowa" come up. This one isn't it. If this is the only time they are on the list- then RIP Joey Jordison. One of the best drummers of this era!

Um bom álbum, o slipknot some com quase todas as caracteristicas do Nu Metal tirando alguns scratches aqui e ali, num geral é um álbum que se alonga demais e é engraçado ver a maioria dos reviews reclamando de vocais gritados quando as músicas com vocais limpos são algumas das mais fracas do álbum. O refrão de All Hope is Gone ainda é uma das coisas mais fortes que sairam do Nu Metal.

intro track, “.execute.”, with its distorted guitars and vocals, is very reminiscent of “in the beginning”, the intro track on the album shout at the devil by motley crue. great way to open the album and set the tone. heavy and aggressive. dark lyrics. solid musicianship. a frontman who sings with passion and intensity. it’s everything you could want in a metal album… except one thing. there’s a trend that started in heavy music a while back… not sure when. it’s when a singer alternates from harsh vocals to clean vocals in the same song. and i never was into it. this album would be a solid “four stars” from me if it stuck to the harsh vocals. but they didn’t, so i had to deduct a star. having said that, “snuff” is a solid song.

Never cared for the appeal in this band/gimmick.

When I signed up for weekend albums I knew it was a mistake. Here I am, sitting in the parking lot waiting for my kids dance class to end, listening to Slipknot. A lot of All Hope Is Gone is much more radio friendly than expected. Coming from someone who likes sad music and heavy music…. This is too much. It almost feels like a parody of itself. I truly feel bad for anyone can relate to this, which I imagine is only teenage boys. Hope you get some help 2.5/10

This was better than I thought it might be. Never knowingly listened to the band, and it’s a bit too much like Lordi for my taste, although there are some nice moments. I probably prefer my metal more British and slightly earlier and I’m unlikely to listen to this again. But I’m glad I did listen to it.

I loved Slipknot, was cool on Iowa, so didn't bother with this. I missed out! Bar a couple of trad rock songs that did less for me, it's great fun. Nihilistic, but fun.

When Slipknot's popularity peaked with All Hope Is Gone in 2008, it was basically all downhill from there. It was both a commercial and critical success for the band, though it was a departure from key tonal elements that made them so popular in the first place. This was done in favor of a more mainstream metal sound, which proved to successful for this release, but detrimental therein after. This is Slipknot's Black Album. Psychosocial was a big hit for them, and for good reason. It's kind of their poppiest metal song if that makes sense? Melodic and catchy chorus, chant parts for audiences to contribute, plus a little breakdown for the metalcore bros. Something for everyone. I think the rest of the album is extremely middling. I'm listening to metal but I feel like it's a shell of the genre. What other metal releases were there in 2008? Gojira, Opeth, and Meshuggah all released stuff that year so I guess prog metal was having a moment. Maybe that would've been a good move for Slipknot, but then again maybe they're not capable of progressive songwriting. When everything sounds the same, how progressive can your music really be?

Didnt hate it but didnt love it either. Faith no more influences with some anthrax and megadeth thrown in. Quite generic thrash with slick production.

Definitely will be bias considering this album is the album that got me into Slipknot The first album that made them deviate away from their original sound and their unfortunate last album with Joey. It's a good album, though definitely one of their weaker albums.

Bit harsh, but I can honestly say I only really liked two songs. First song (Gematria) gave me high hopes for the album, but everything else fell kind of fell flat in comparison. It just wasn't enough for me to rate it any higher.

Feel harsh for saying it but I didn't like the majority of songs on it. I don't think slipknot is for me. Gematria was amazing though and in my regular rotation of songs now but the rest fell flat for me.

BL: This album is one quite near and dear to my heart. Slipknot was the first metal band (alongside Korn) I got properly into back when I was 12 or 13, I owned this record on CD and used to listen to it quite often, not as much as the debut, but this was definitely my second favourite album by them. Psychosocial was one of the first metal songs I learned on the guitar, and still remember the riff to this day. The chaos this album brings is truly something of a calibre many other metal albums could never rival. That being said, it’s been maybe 3 or 4 years since I listened to it the whole way through. So I’ll see what I think. “Snuff” continues to be one of my favourite sad songs of all time AL: this was even better on the relisten than I remember it being. There is a lot of diversity here which brings in some blues notations alongside traditional metal, Screamo vocals alongside sung breaks. There were some tracks here which I’ve grown to massively appreciate here which I didn’t when I was younger (“Sulfur”, “Gehenna”). There are still a couple tracks here and there that I think are weaker (“Butcher’s Hook”, “This Cold Black”), but the main tracks I love stayed just as good (“Dead Memories”, “Snuff”) FT: “Dead Memories”, “Snuff”, “Gehenna”, “Sulfur” 5/5

Metal

In general I like this album. It has a lot of energy and it's overall good metal. Still, I prefer Rammstein because just german sound more fitting to me in this genre. At some parts the english feels just a little too corny, a bit like like Linkin Park sometimes. I will surely delve a bit more into slipknots music after this, cuz they're for sure influential af. Wouldn't really take the praise as far as their overly presumptuous spotify description states. 7/10

I liked this better than I thought I would. Though I’m not crazy about the guttural screaming or overall ethos, there’s actually some solid songwriting behind these tracks and the more melodic vocal parts are actually quite listenable. This is never going to be something I listen to with any intention after this point, but I prefer it to Megadeth or Anthrax. Somehow, I think they avoid some of the dorky faux-machismo that tends to turn me off from metal—it just feels very dark. Top tracks: “Vendetta,” “Psychosocial”

I remember this was the first slipknot album I was disappointed in because it wasn’t as heavy as the previous ones. Listening back, the genre had really changed.

Before listening to this I didn't know groove metal was even a thing. Now that I know that, I can make sure to never listen to it again. Thanks for the PSA, Slipknot.

Better than I thought it would be. Didn’t love it at first but the longer I listened the more I started vibing. Unfortunately, the longer it went on the more I reverted back to my intial aversion toward the music. Instrumentals were great, vocals a bit grating.

I’ll be honest: I really struggled getting through this album. Screamo is NOT my thing LMAO!! However, that being said, I did go into this album expecting to give it a 1 star review, given that I rate solely based off of personal enjoyment. A few songs surprised me though! In particular, the songs “Dead Memories” and “Snuff” were surprisingly nice. I find I like Slipknot most when the vocalist actually SINGS, though unfortunately those moments are far and in between. Probably will never listen again, but I liked more songs than I thought I would.

I found myself grooving to songs like Gehenna that are probably inspired by the vocals and guitars of Alice in Chains etc. But then the Red Bull Speedball drums and the growly reak vocals don't do anything for me. The lyrics are pretty terrible throughout. Amazing to see all the accolades this band has pulled. I just find a lot of it actually isn't that innovative.

Not my jam. But I can respect this more than other bands that exist in this space. Metallica, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Korn etc. Basically any bass-heavy alt-metal stuff. It's also worth looking at how incredibly popular Slipknot is outside of the U.S. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico even Indonesia has more Spotify listeners than here in the states.

“Gematria” is awful, but 1:30 into “Sulfur” you can see Slipknot’s potential. When Corey Taylor actually sings, and really cuts loose, Slipknot can compete with the best nu metal. However, that happens far too rarely, and the best nu metal isn’t even that good anyway. The majority of “All Hope is Gone” consists of growling and incessant kick drums, with cringy lyrics piled on top. But from a band that identifies members by number and wears goofy horror masks and matching jumpsuits, I’m not sure what better could really be expected.

These guys, individually and collectively, are good musicians. They are technically astute. #4 & #7 (the guitarists) rip killer riff Andrea killer riff. The vocals are not horrible, which is what I expected. I thought I was in for another Sepultura level wrenchingly offensive growls. The guttural source is here, and not entirely pleasant. However, Slipnot’s growling felt more selectively used and more understandable. They mixed in “regular” singing too that is pretty good. And it’s like #8 (the vocalist) knows the growling causes discomfort because sometimes his voice gets less growly through the course of a verse to make it better. The drummer is incredibly talented too. Just too much straight double kick for my liking, but I recognize that it’s not easy to pull off. I was totally expecting to get this and I didn’t, which was a nice surprise.

Thought for sure I would hate this but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The musicians are very talented, but I'm just not into this style too much. I think they fall into a limbo where they are too poppy for metal fans and too metal for pop fans, but definitely worth a listen. Strangely, despite the screaming presentation, the messages in the lyrics are pretty good if a little cheesy. Just under 4 stars for me.

The drums sound like they’re being played by a machine, it sounds mechanical with how fast and loud the percussion is. Gehenna caught me off guard, could have sworn it was Jonathan Davis from KoRn doing the vocals with the whispered tones but it was a solid song. Psychosocial was furious and fun. Vocals overall are a bit of a sticking point for me, not necessarily bad I don’t know just something that is kinda lame about it but the band itself is so tight on this album I can’t go lower than 4 stars

A thing that’s not really for me, but fine I guess

metal is a genre that never quite gets its due. slipknot's all hope is gone is extremely good and deserves to be on this project. any music of the metal genre has to have good legs to stand on--meaning, the instrumentation has to be good. i think the instrumentation of this album is incredibly solid. honestly, in a way, the vocals are distracting. the gritty, demanding vocals are perfect for slipknot, don't get me wrong, but it takes focus away from the instrumentation. and let me tell you, these drums are extremely fire. many of these songs are of the typical death metal style (look no further than the opening lyrics to "butcher's hook" or, you know, the actual album title), of which are done very well, but god does slipknot deliver on the more sentimental songs. there's a reason "snuff" is one of their most popular songs.

Slipknot is such a staple of the metal scene in the 2000s and onward, and yet I somehow mostly missed them when I was getting into this type of music at that time. So this was a nice album to visit. Since I'm not intimately knowledgable on Slipknot, I don't know for sure what makes this album stand out specifically in terms of their discography, but if I had to guess, I think it's probably the slower, not quite as hard route that they take here. This album does a good job of still being metal, but showing off amazing guitar and percussion work, and definitely lets Corey Taylor's smoky vocals shine beyond just metal "growl" vocals. "Snuff", in particular, highlights all of these things, and as a result, probably stands as the best song on the album. "Psychosocial" is among the best that the album has to offer as well, and while heavier than "Snuff", it still finds places to show off Corey's voice.

i really liked this album, even more than i thought i would. i knew a handful of tracks from it beforehand but enjoyed most of what was going on here. tracks like psychosocial and snuff are some of slipknot's best, and this album strikes a good balance between really gritty, dark, heavy tracks and the nice but sad ballads. with only one real exception, the songs were all in the neighborhood of 4-6 minutes long, which was a bit grueling for some of the less interesting tracks in the middle. in fact, i really enjoyed tracks 1-5 and 11-15, but the middle third of the album just didn't do much for me. still, that many good and varied tracks makes this an easy 5 star for this list. favorites: tracks 2-5 and 11-15. especially sulfur, psychosocial, dead memories, snuff, and vermilion pt 2

Definitely heard of Slipknot, had a friend who used to love heavy metal. I’ve never been a fan though so expecting a quick decision on this. Trying to go in with an open mind though, might have changed my mind as haven’t tried it for a long time. Actually quite enjoying the intensity and guitar sounds straight off the bat. Never liked the vocals/screaming. Vocals definitely not my thing still, but quite enjoy the rest of the music… might have to put it as a high 2/5.

I've never really listened to Slipknot before. Because of the masks I mentally labelled them style over substance, like Kiss etc, and ignored them. That said this album is better than I expected. Not perfect but there's a few songs that I saved to my library to listen to again.

Sorry, I just can't with this shit today. I did listen to the whole insipid thing though for some reason. 1 star. Ever since I reached my 1,001st album about 2 weeks ago I've been getting mostly mediocre albums. Just a coincidence I suppose but I'm ready for something I actually enjoy.

There's only so much quadruple kick drum and distortion a human can handle. Too much shouting and unnecessary angst. I tried, and listened to all of this but won't be revisiting this one.

Gotta say, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The aggression is there, no doubt, but it felt a bit like they were trying too hard to recapture the intensity of their earlier work. The experimentation with different styles didn't always land smoothly, and some tracks felt a bit disjointed. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for their earlier stuff, but this one didn't resonate with me as much.

I am biased, this was the first metal album I ever heard. My uncle borrowed the CD to me and told me not to tell my mom I was listening to 'screamo' music. Still love this album.

Goated album

Has some good metal moments but honestly it gets pretty cliched at times. Not the best metal out there but the percussion can really rip sometimes.

I like some metal, I really do. I will listen to the iron maiden album again, but I just couldn't get through this one. I am not saying they caused the headache I still can't get rid of after 24 hours, but I'm not saying they didn't.

I can understand how fans of the genre would like this, and I actually didn’t mind the parts with actual singing. But overall, not my cup of tea. “Snuff” is weirdly out of place.

"Mother nature is a coward, mother nature is a whore" As compared to "Rust in peace," by Megadeth, which I reviewed a couple of weeks prior, this album sucks. Although metal riffs are hard to make bad, and I enjoyed all of the pinch harmonics used, I didn't hear any super unique or interesting melodies in the guitar of this album, and the lyrics were pretty mediocre and sound like they're trying too hard at times. I also find it funny that the two most-played songs off the album: T4- "Psychosocial" and T11- "Snuff" are both the most poppy and parts sound more like My chemical romance than anything that would be considered metal. I don't consider myself a metalhead, and i'm not trying to call anyone a poser or bash anyone's music tastes, but it's kind of funny how the majority of "Slipknot fans" listen to stuff that hardly sounds like Slipknot. All of the songs blended together, and at 1hr 10mins, I split this album into two listening sessions, which probably saved me a headache. At the end of the very last song, I felt particularly tired of listening to it, and I feel like this album could've done with some more trimming. 2/5

The music is good the vocals are not

My instinct here was to get through it and move on, but surprise myself to totally vibing out to Slipknot. You live and learn.

Slipknot? Why? I'm currently into folk and acoustic guitar music. This isn't going to end well. I don't understand the need for extreme overdrive unless you aren't good at playing guitar. I also don't understand the whole scream singing stuff and this is muted compared to some of the screamo I remember listening too as an angsty teenage high schooler. I don't understand anything being \"sung\". The drumming is pretty amazing though. Well this just isn't my cup of tea. Hard to call it music outside of the drumming, which is legit very impressive. 3 tracks in and I just can't...definitely not something you need to hear before you die. 2 out of 5 just for the drummer, everything else is a 0.

This album's called "All Hope Is Gone," which is apt, since it's probably playing on a loop in Hell. Hot garbage. No thanks.

Damn, this is even better than I remember. The drift from nu-metal to groove was just the perfect decision by Slipknot. All Hope Is Gone completely lives up to it's runtime with plenty of outstanding tracks. The duo of 'Sulfur' into 'Psychoscial' really is something, and the face-melting solo on 'This Cold Black' comes out of nowhere! Also, I acknowledge that 'Snuff' is sort of selling out, but it's just one hell of a track.

The last Slipknot album to include the original lineup is also one of their best. The songs are more structurally listener friendly and there are even ballads on this thing (“Snuff” in particular) but at the same time Slipknot manages to never lose the anger and dizzyingly massive sound and even delivers some of their heaviest material on “Gematria (The Killing Name”. Especially the trio from “Sulfur” through “Dead Memories” are as perfect as it gets, but there are still moments on All Hope Is Gone where I can sense the difficulty of being 9 people in a band all contributing to the songwriting to some extent.

I enjoyed this much more than I was expecting to! There’s definitely much better metal out there, this is pretty basic, but it’s well done and surprisingly accessible for people who don’t listen to metal.

I have to judge this harshly because some of my favorite bands are metalcore. The instrumentals are good and the vocals definitely work for the songs. However, the lyrics often have nursery-rhyme simple poetic structures and it gets on my nerves. Additionally, sometimes it seems like they have something important to say about social/political issues and sometimes they're just just being edgy. Psychosocial is easily the best song here. I don't know who to recommend this album to. Non-metal fans wouldn't like it, but there are so many other albums I'd play for another metal fan before this one.

All Hope Is Gone. Dat is wel een goede samenvatting van deze Slipknot luisterervaring. Ik had al heel weinig hoop dat dit me ook maar enigszins zou kunnen bekoren, en die hoop is na 2 nummers volledig weg. En als je vindt dat je je als band moet aankleden als een soort derderangs spookhuis op de Tilburgse kermis, dan ben je sowieso al af.

En dan ben ik in een gulle bui.

I didn’t have high hopes for 72 minutes of what I could only assume would be death metal, and my expectations (or lack thereof) were well warranted. Needless to say, I did not listen for 72 minutes. Not even a minute into this hell, I thought I might’ve been experiencing symptoms of Havana Syndrome. I had to pause just to make sure. In “Sulfur,” the singer sounds like he’s foaming at the mouth. If you’ve ever made eye contact with this guy I’d suggest you get a rabies shot immediately. Truthfully, I could not listen much past this point. It’s been a while since I’ve given out just one star, but All Hope Is Gone fits squarely in the bottom tier of albums we’ve heard. Slipknot belongs in our arsenal reserved for intense psychological warfare. Blasting “Welcome to the Jungle” in Panama in 1989 would have nothing on blasting this album around the Kremlin in 2023. Does anybody have any Q-tips?

Pretty solid for what it is. Slightly left field mainstream metal. Not really for me. Prefer the screaming to the earnest singing.

Okay, I'm just a very casual fan of Slipknot, I would sometimes listen to their more famous songs, like "Psychosocial" or "Snuff" from this album. In 2000s I always thought this band is all "shock" and no essence, just 4 dudes using kegs as drums in a weird and scary masks. Stuff for teenagers I guess. But one has to admit that "All Hope Is Gone" is a much more mature album, with quieter and slower moments, good on its own, but also underlining the speed and anger from other songs. I'm also a fan of Corey Taylor, pretty good vocalist, that has some nice songs outside of Slipknot. Not the greatest album on the list, but I think it's worth 5 stars.

It would've been a 1 based on most of the shouty vocals but two songs that were actually sung redeemed it - just! Not my sort of music. You can't relax to it or dance to it.

Haven't listened to this since when it came out when I was in middle school. I enjoyed re-listening to it. The breakdowns were great throughout the album. Dead Memories was my favorite, I wish they had included more clean vocals on this album.

I liked the songs that had strong melodies: "Snuff", "Psychosocial", "Dead Memories", "Vermilion, Pt. 2", "'Til We Die", and "Gehenna". As for the other songs, their melodies were more difficult to make out, and so those tracks didn't appeal to me as much.

Not as bad as I thought it'd be as I'm more familiar with their earlier stuff. A bit more melodic death and even some black metal elements to it. They are technically good musicians, but the songwriting is just... boring.

Late career Slipknot was not how I was expecting to start this Thursday, but hey why not? Album opens with .execute. which sets the stage with some post-apocolyptic horror movie vibes. Slowly building static with a vocal recording poking through that gives way to an elongated drum fill. Basically just a long intro to Gematria that picks up heavy on the double bass. Gematria is an unexpectedly political song talking about how America will burn your cities down -- presumably referring to expansionist policy in the Middle East. Sulfur is a bit more straightforward metal. Like much late career Slipknot it sounds fine, but doesn't really tap into anything special. Psychosocial is a fine enough song. Largely driven by an angsty guitar riff and Corey Taylors growl, this one is pretty effective pop-metal. Gives way to one of the more colorful guitar solos that I can think of in a Slipknot song. Almost feels more like Avenged Sevenfold than proper Slipknot. Dead Memories and Vendetta are, once again, more alt-pop-metal than anything else. I find myself tapping along, but don't find this particularly compelling. Though I will say I enjoyed the abrupt breakdown on Vendetta. Butcher's Hook is one of the more interesting songs on this record so far. I enjoy the heavy metal riff that progresses the intro and leaves Taylor's vocals hanging off of the end of each segment. Creates a tense imbalance. I will say the whiny chorus throws me though; I'm almost never a fan of that technique. Wherein Lies Continue starts strong and contains one of the heavier riffs on here. Also gives Taylor a chance to shine his vocal range with a Stone Sour esq interlude. But what starts out with promise becomes a slog that is a challenge to hang on throughout. Snuff seems like it was put here just to show the band's range. Or really Taylor's raw vocal ability. No denying the dude has a great voice. This is a surprisingly tender song following Wherein Lies Continue. This album is a lot longer than it has any right being. There are a few standout tracks, but most of this falls into a blah wall of sound for me. Individual songs are long ranging from 4 minutes to almost 7 minute sludge fests. There isn't anything that's outright bad, but there isn't much to come back for. I'm somewhere between a 2 and a 3 on this one. Gonna go with a 3 because while it was way too long, I think they do decent service and show some incredible range without ever being outright offensive.

There's definitely aspects on Slipknot that I enjoy. The drums, bass, and guitar are enjoyable. The singing is not. I have never been a fan of the edgy nu-metal bands singers, but if you eliminated vocals, this would be an awesome album to listen to. Gehenna was a change of pace, but I didn't like that song, so it doesn't get brownie points. Snuff was another change of pace, although a bit too emo for my tastes. It sounds like a buzz ballad. All Hope is Gone is probably my favorite off the album. Good message, great drums, and I appreciate the beat switches throughout. Overall I love the energy that this album showcases. I also understand the message that this album is trying to get across, but it's not expressed in the way that I find appealing; which is why I feel like Slipknot and bands like them are popular across "misunderstood" people. This album is in potential 4 star territory for me, but I really have to knock it down for how off putting the singing is and how long the album goes. Definitely some bright spots that I really like in this album, though.

But Snuff brought it back that's a new song for me which was great. Can’t believe I just listened to slipknot for an hour straight. Pretty long album. Never could get into them when I was younger and this confirms that. Just not for me, but I did enjoy some moments and can respect it.

Laughably bad. So generic, unoriginal and talentless. How did they think in 2008 they could churn this out? It's been done before by better bands. Maybe the braindead teens in their bedrooms don't realise that and think it's novel and cutting edge? Reading the reviews after writing the above I'm relieved that it's not just me.

2/5. Not even their marquee album. I just cannot get into Slipknot similar to how I cannot get into Disturbed. Their driving metal tones just are hard on the ears along with the lead singers screaming. I actually find his voice to be quite good when he is not screaming, but those moments are few and far between.

All hope is gone that I take this list seriously now. A personal memory: I saw Slipknot headlining one night of the Furyfest / Hellfest metal festival in France back in the naughts, and it was one night to remember. The festival audience had learned that the band had turned up late for the soundcheck in the early afternoon, and that they had used most of the soundcheck slots of the other smaller bands playing that day to rehearse their show. Which prevented those other bands to do the same, obviously. Apart from Slipknot's young and naive fans, the slightly more mature general audience of that festival was not pleased by that rumour, as you can imagine. And so Slipknot got the welcome they supposedly deserved when they started to play. Angry metalheads and hardcore punk kids put their hands on everything they could find at the festival locale--stones, cans, even bottles of piss!--and threw them on the stage while Slipknot was playing. An acquaintance working at the festival later told us that among the rubbish littering the stage right after the band left it, someone even found a f*cking dead rabbit. A dead rabbit! Pretty fitting for the band's aesthetics, I'd say. I gotta give it to Slipknot, though, they still gave a great show, objectively speaking. Even with their masks on, you could sense the band didn't care about the dangerous situation, and they even took advantage of it, adding their own craziness to the whole disaster. Whenever he could, their frontman kept giving middle fingers to the pissed-off festival members, clearly enjoying the whole thing while avoiding the projectiles as he played--therefore proving Slipknot were solid performers through and through, even under those pretty adverse circumstances. This can't make up for the rock-star bullshit, but that justifies the admiration of some other fans, I guess... To return to *All Hope Is Gone*, it's more satisfying for me to share that little anecdote than to describe this album painstakingly trying to renew Slipknot's sound almost a decade after that nu-metal thing took over the world (and then faded into oblivion). The band tries to play as many different cards as they can to move their sound further--classic trash metal / death metal on "Gematria" ; System Of A Down-related dynamics on "Sulfur" ; cheesy pop choruses on "Psychosocial" ; a metal version of Depeche Mode for "Dead Memories" (via Mike Shinoda/Linkin' Park, maybe?) ; or a classic metal ballad à la "Nothing Else Matters" with "Snuff" ; not to mention the band's already aging nu-metal routine for most of the other cuts... But literally everything falls flat, because there's nothing that Slipknot offers here that hasn't been done better ten times before. Including by them sometimes, very ironically. Those musicians are very skilled players and performers, of course. But that's not enough to consider *All Hope Is Gone* as "essential". If anything, this album looks a little like that stage I talked about earlier, at least once the show was over. It's a topsy-turvy arrangement of rubbish that neither makes sense nor suggests a truly visceral experience. Because everything important was said and done *before* that moment. A *dead* rabbit for sure. :) To put it in a nutshell, maybe it would make more sense to include Slipknot's 1999 eponymous album in the list, thanks to its more iconic tracks on the first side ("sic", "Eyeless", "Wait And Bleed"...). That choice would at least be more preferable than this later overdone and rather laborious LP. As some reviewers rightly said here (including initial fans of the band), the 1001 Albums book's strange "compromise" that saw its authors select this later full-length release won't satisfy a lot of people anyway, whether they are sincere fans of the band or not. And the global score is here to prove it. 1/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 6/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 1). Next, please. The mix of vocal styles grated a bit on me. I prefer the more melodic tunes, but it didn't stand out as an album.

This genre isn’t my thing. That said, this feels like an absolutely flawless execution of all of its ideas. I can’t earnestly give it a five, but this is as close as an album like this could be.

slipknot is not really ever going to be my thing — i hate their general aesthetic, and i feel like a lot of the vibe flows from the aesthetic. with that being said, this album is very technically good. it’s just not enjoyable for me

If this is your jam, fine. It's a particular thing and maybe you like that thing. I don't love it myself, some of it is ok. Objectively speaking, though, this album is not the pinnacle of anything or going in a new or interesting direction. Which is to say, I don't think it belongs on this list. Went into this album only knowing the song psychosocial, came out of it really liking it, great album to get you pumped up, especially me for working out, highly recommend.

Maybe 2.5, starts off well but becomes tiresome by the end. This is very much stadium metal, just with allusions to death/thrash metal - clearly designed for mass gatherings where I'm sure they still excel. I saw Slipknot on their first UK tour (1999/early 2000?) and haven't really kept up with them since Iowa, appreciated the chance to reacquaint myself though

Not a fan at all, just not for me

Not being able to understand the lyrics takes away from a big part of the music. I imagine if I was a bigger fan of this genre, I would be able to understand them easier, so I won’t hold it against them as it is, at times, intelligible. The chords and structures are creative and exciting. There is a good bit of range in here, especially towards the latter half, which helps. I enjoyed this album, I’ll listen to some of these songs again, but probably not all in one sitting. 3/5

J'ai écouté cet album au bureau et, comme vous pouvez vous en douter, mes collègues n'ont pas arrêté de regarder à mes pieds si je n'avais pas ramené de clébard dégueulasse avec moi. Fort heureusement ce ne sont pas mes goûts musicaux à moi mais ceux de Robert que j'avais dans les oreilles.

Les joyeux gueulards de Slipknot nous apportent un peu de fraîcheur dans ce générateur pour ménagères. Malgré cela, j'ai bien l'impression que le cargo de cocaïne promis à Robert n'est pas arrivé à bon port, je vais faire jouer de mes contacts auprès de la police douanière pour tenter de résoudre cette affaire.

As a Slipknot fan, 10/10. No, I'll give it four stars. It's a solid album, although many songs sound same-ish. I love the alternate cover, the one with the more spooky feeling. Snuff is an all time fave ballad, Dead Memories was one of their first songs I heard. I have vivid memories connected with almost every song on here. That part of the chorus of Gehenna - love it. A mid tier Slipknot album paling in comparison to Slipknot and Iowa. An attempt to move into a more mainstream sound whilst attempting to keep some of the Iowa sound, albeit less raw. Some good songs, with some ruined by too much playtime (psychosocial/ dead memories)

Weird choice of Slipknot album to have on the 1001 album list. Not the one I was expecting as there's better Slipknot albums like Iowa in my opinion. All Hope is Gone got some good tracks. Gematria, Psychosocial and the title track are all bangers. They're great and quite accessible with a ruthless style mixed with a somewhat melodic approach. Sure Slipknot is commercial metal but not everything have to be hardcore underground metal.

Honestly couldn't wait for this album to end. Suffered from Metallica syndrome, each song could be cut in half and it would probably be better for it. Heresy, I know. Come at me bro.

Slipknot are in that bracket of metal/emo bands I actually appreciate more now than when I was a teenager (‘shouty men in silly masks’ was my initial verdict). When they combine meaty riffs with catchy, non-screamy vocals (like Psychosocial, which always went down well at uni rock club nights), I can get on board. That said, I think tracks like Gematria will always be too thrashy for me to enjoy. *That* said, it doesn’t seem like this is considered the best Slipknot album, and people who really like the band tend to prefer the earlier, less poppy stuff. So the inclusion of this album on the list seems like a bit of an awkward compromise. Much like my on-the-fence 3-star rating.

I've been a fan of Slipknot when I was a kid (I also celebrated my 16th birthday at a concert instead of having a typical Sweet 16) but there's so few albums of theirs I've chosen to sit through the whole thing. I did really like this album but it's definitely not their best one. I feel like a couple songs lean on the side of being way better while live, even if I haven't heard them at a concert. Tracks 6-9 feel like something an edgy 17 year old would listen to which sucks because it started so strong but it picks back up with This Cold Black and after.

I can't take any of this music seriously. It's SO serious it just kills me. Production sounds fine, but this strikes me like the DC movies - it's for people who wish the silly thing they like was taken very very seriously.

A band that was coming into its own during my youth, yet one that utterly passed me by. On this evidence, I'm not too bothered. By a long chalk the best songs are those that lean into the heavier end of the nu-metal spectrum. That said, the blast beats sometimes sound like a rather proficient typist, and tell me - what are Slipknot doing with clean vocalist / gruff vocalist that wasn't already perfected by Aqua? The slower or more quiet songs are an absolute slurry of post-grunge mediocrity. The production is hideous, like it was all filtered through a cardboard tube. Sorry, but this reviewer is far from becoming a maggot on the strength of All Hope Is Gone.

I can't necessarily defend this opinion, but guys I didn't hate it. The version I listened to is for sure too long, there's too much similarity from song to song, yes the production is weak and yes it is just anger from start to finish, with very little nuance about what it actually is that they're so angry about. But goddamit I would've loved this if I was 13 in 2003 or whenever. You can't say it's not heavy. And you can't say there aren't melodies there. Which is, frankly, so so much more than most of what passes for popular hard rock/radio metal right now. I think sometimes about the shit I listened to back when I was a kid and how there were metal bands you could hear on the radio late at night or see occasionally on MTV who seemed to me to actually be scary. Like they were trying to convey horror through music. And while a band like W.A.S.P seems utterly ridiculous now, you could still wrap your head around the idea of why parents in the 1980s might take a look at that band and go, "Now hey wait. I'm not so sure I want my pre-teen listening to that." To say nothing of a Carcass or Morbid Angel or Napalm Death. Black metal was too obscure to scare the mainstream and most of it didn't sound like music anyway. But Slipknot? I bet they scared some suburban moms and dads around the time this album came out and I'm giving them a star just for trying.

There might be the occasional day where a combination of distraction and laziness would keep me from turning this off before the end of the album. Today wasn’t the day.

Is it my cup of tepid vomit or whatever it is Slipknot drink instead of tea? No not really. Is it terrible? No I wouldn't say that either. I did however prefer this one to the previous album of theirs I have had on this list.

A little too heavy for me but there are some great songs on here.

Felt appropriate on a drive home on a really dark and gloomy day. Kinda felt like the world was ending. But then I got home and sort of lost interest. This was okay, I don't mind metal, and some of these songs really were great, but it all got a bit grating after a while. Maybe even boring in a weird sort of way? I don't know, there's not much modern metal I seem to enjoy. Gematria (The Killing Name) was excellent though. Real thrash metal vibes. Favourite: Gematria (The Killing Name)

I am a big fan of Slipknot, and I've listened to this album countless times. Personally, I think it's one of my least favorite albums of theirs. Although there are some really great songs on this one, in previous listens I would skip around to them instead of listening to the whole thing. I'm happy to see them on the list.

I have never been the biggest slipknot fan but I liked it more than I thought. Especially the songs which are not that much nu metal.

4/10. I don't know if this album was better than the other Slipknot album, if Slipknot has grown on me, or if I've just heard more music I like less now, but this was better than expected.

This album boils down to something like "Life is meaningless, I'm going to scream!" When I am feeling existential dread I at least like to listen to music that sounds pleasant. 2/10

I've definitely heard this band's name for at least a few years, but I don't recall having listened to them or their songs before. These performers are incredibly skilled, no doubt. Some of the tracks are a bit too thrashy and shouty for my own personal tastes, but in the right mood, I can hear that I'd like them. Some of the other tracks are less in my face and I enjoyed those.

At times, this was just kind of generic speed metal and I would think it was fine, but definitely not for me. Then, it would veer into nu metal melodrama and I could not stand it. Another baffling inclusion on the list.

This is not my type of music. I did pleasantly enjoy the more melodic tracks on the album, as I expected just nu-metal through the whole album. I'm probably not smart enough to understand the inclusion of this album as a "must listen." It feels like there is nothing new here that Slipknot has done other than slightly adjust their sound.

Don't like slipknot as much as a lot of people but can't deny the greatness of this record. Should probably give this one a listen tonight.

What does it say that I think the best song on this album is the ballad? The record all feels a little bit derivative, it's not all LOUD SCREAMING which is a relief, but you'd think these guys would sound a little less generic.

I think I will give this album a 2. There are some redeeming features shockingly haha! The drums are fucking insane and I do not know how a human can produce that sounds with drum sticks and a kit!! So impressive and hard to ignore. Some cool melodic sections with harmonies as well as the guttural shouting and chanting. Very authentic human emotions and passion! However, it's so self-indulgent and not in a funny way that I can get behind like some cheesy 90s rom com soundtracks for example where they're singing about heart break. I don't know anything about metal and I don't have a sophisticated opinion but I do quite like the Linkin Park esque vocals (like on Sulfur). Have to admit I'm not sure I will fully listen to all of every single song on this album, I may get the jist and skip on, oops!

About 25 years ago there appeared a whole generation of "nu metal" bands.. which were all terrible (apart from SoaD they were great) If you still care, don't ever let me knooooww.. this kind of singer-songwriter stuff is a bit too whiny for me.

Sounded okay, but would not seek it out. The heavier bits reminded me of Sepultura.

Loud and ugly for the most part.

Best Song: Snuff. It isn't a good sign that the least metal song on this ostensibly metal album is the best one. Worst Song: Psychosocial. Really didn't expect (nor enjoy) the emo-esque melodic vocals. Overall: Really just boring, repetitive metal. None of the heavy tracks did much to catch my attention. There's a lot better metal out there.

GIT OFF MY LAWN

Not bad! Normally I’m not as drawn to 90s heavy rock, but this album has a range of riffs, rhythms, a blend of yelling and melodic vocals, and actual songwriting similar to Metallica in some vague regard.

Made it to track two, but only because they don't 'sing' on track one. What a load of rubbish.

Well I gave it a go. Not really listened to much Slipknot previously, and that's not about to change after 57 mins and 57 seconds of this album. If you removed the lyrics and 'singing' style and just listened to the instrumentation and arrangement, I'd be a lot happier! There's a lot of skill going on there.

Got off to a rough start but ended up dialing in the djent near the end. Don’t think the falsetto vox are Feldman’s strong suit, but when the band locks in around an uptempo riff with the heavy vocals things click.

I have to admit, this way better and more palatable than I expected. I didn’t think there would be an alt rock vibe to it. It still has many problems that most metal poses to me - mainly anxiety and overwrought, weird kid at school lyrics. A high 2.

Took a while to get through this one, it was hard to find the right moment to listen to it! I found it a bit of a mixed bag, some good songs, some cringy. A bit too long imo, but more varied than I was expecting.

Better than I expected. Slipknot are well versed in the various styles of metal and employ them throughout so that it becomes impossible to pigeonhole them as nu metal or groove metal. There’s a lot of black metal influences as well as some punk, hardcore, and thrash metal thrown in for good measure. The subject matter of the album, very critical of the United States at a time when the economy was collapsing, fits the punk ethos well and certainly deserves the darker edge that the black metal influence lends it.

Here we go... a bit of Slipknot. Maybe not their best album but still an impressive collection of songs and sounds. The record clangs and chuggs and powers its way through its tracklist as you'd expect and I think Corey Taylor is on absolute top form here, as can be heard on the amazing Psychosocial, going from screaming to this lush singing without seemingly any effort at all. Mick Gordons guitar tone on this record is similarly amazing always keeping the record sounding heavy but never overpowering everything else going on. Not to mention Joey Jordison's drumming which really got Slipknot where they are if you ask me, so dense and maximalist but it still sounds really good and the little cymbal flourishes and bell type sounds really offset how intense a lot of the double bass drum work is, also the snare sound is so finley crafted its quite impressive. Does it have the most hits on it? no is it as good as Iowa? no but its got its own style and personality and I love it.

It's not really as inventive as the critics claim it is. It's still the usual Slipknot. Same tricks. same themes, same sounds. But I do appreciate how well-produced and organized this is. Love it or hate it, this is Slipknot at their best, imo.

Slipknot is a heavy metal band from Iowa. Fronted by Corey Taylor, who has also had some solo stuff and sang with the band Stone Sour as well. He also has had acting gigs, and has turned his hand to writing as well. Helluva talented guy! I can distinctly remember when their self titled debut album came out in 1999. I recall seeing the music video for Wait and Bleed, as well as interviews with a few of the lads on Much Music and thinking, "what the fuck am I looking at". 1999 was the time when nu metal was huge, and acts like Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Linkin Park were getting started. Slipknot exploded on the scene with a much heavier, faster, more raw sound, and all the dudes in the band wore spooky masks, which they switched out for each album release. These guys took their chance and ran with it, and were, and continue to be insanely popular, headlining their own yearly festival of hard rock/metal (Knotfest) and putting on the craziest live shows ever! It is a sonic experience to say the least. This was the last album for original drummer Joey Jordison before he had to leave the band because of a form of MS that he was battling which prevented him from playing his instrument any more. In his heyday he was one hell of a drummer, with his machine gun kick drum, and insanely technical drum beats. RIP Joey, you are truly missed. Overall, a great listen today! I recall the first time I heard the song Snuff, it blew my mind. That was the first time I heard Corey's more intimate singing voice. It is so beautiful alongside his raw, gutteral screaming voice. This is a hell of a talented band, and a great bunch of guys! I expected to not love but it was gas

Slipknot conjures images of mid-2000s hallway juggalos, and I’ll admit from the safe distance of 20 years that I did have a few slipknot songs on my iPod in high school that I’d listen to in secret… but not this album. With this one, I gotta say: haaate the melodic clean vocals, album is too long, and the energy drops midway for me. But I do love a cute mask, chunky jugga jugga juggajuggajugga, and 2008 angst nostalgia. (Also dang, Snuff, you a sad song 😢❤️) Love this genre but overall lukewarm on this album, it’s a high 2 from me dawg

Said it before, and I'll say it again. Slipknot is too far down the metal spectrum for me. Album was mostly noise, but there were some highlights. Favorite track: Dead Memories

With "Gematria" and "Sulfur", you can hear Slipknot ditching their hip-hop elements (save for the small record scratching in Sulfur) in favor of a more traditional thrash style reminiscent of Metallica or Pantera. Yet these retain the alt-rock elements of nu-metal for the melodic verses of most of their songs, as well as the basis of their singles "Dead Memories" and "Snuff." This is one of the weaker albums, with some pretty annoying and uninteresting tracks, and many others not living up to the anger and expression of their self-titled or Iowa. This is one of their most accessible albums, which memorable hooks in most of the tracks that could draw in people trying to get into metal. It's polished with cool production techniques that add to the horror elements they portray. Vocalists give a hell of their performance and perform their roles of providing order and chaos to each of the tracks as appropriate. I'm a huge fan of the rapid drumming and distorted guitar solos. Also a fan of how most of the songs evolve in several segments, maintaining the audience's attention which is helpful since metal songs tend to be too fast and abrasive for most audiences to keep track of. The first side is pretty good, but again nothing stands out like their hits from their previous albums. "Vendetta" has a few cool parts, and I really like the climactic ending, but it's otherwise the most forgettable. The next two tracks "Butcher's Tale" and "Gehenna" are highly experimental, and also very divisive among the fan base. "Butcher's Tale" is all over the place and grating, and I do agree that it's a miss, but it is interesting nevertheless. "Gehena" on the other hand is my favorite song off the album. I'm obsessed with the spooky atmospheric horror elements of the song, and I wish there were more tracks like it. My only complaint is that the instrumental is pretty tame and not multi-layered like many of the other to justify its 7-minute length. "This Cold Black" and "Wherein Lies Continue" are pretty forgettable filler besides a couple cool parts. "Snuff" is my least favorite track, essentially overdramatic post-grunge with a cool guitar part in the middle. The titular closer is pretty good but feels really weird having the tamest are hardest tracks next to each other.

I had never listened to a Slipknot album before, and this seems like the perfect place to start! Great metal record, with plenty of contrast and interesting compositions to keep the listener engaged!

This is like a 2.5 I guess, not quite my thing, but still some things I appreciate as well. I'm rounding it down, but that's just me being harsh on these ratings. Glad to have listened to it once, that was probably plenty lol

i'm no slipknot aficionado but surely this isn't the one album you should listen to of theirs or the one that defined a new genre. if anything i find this a little tame for slpiknot and almost commercial.

A LANDSHARK favourite jam. He blasts this on his CD Walkman while going about his biting the heads off humans business. Apart from that, it's nowhere near Slipknot's best album, an odd choice for this list.

I quite liked this album. Of course, I wasn't as awed by it as little, 13-year old me was by its predecessor, Vol.3 when that came out (before I disowned it as "not serious metal" -ahem), but I quite liked it. I especially enjoyed the accomplished blend of quick and dirty but technical modern thrash metal and the softer touches such as in Vendetta - but not the actual ballads that bog down the second half of the album.

I got halfway though the first song before the family told me to turn it off. Surprise I got that far!

I went through a metal phase in high school. At the peak of nu-metal, I was donning JNCO jeans, bead bracelets, dyed hair, and a bass guitar. Slipknot became relevant during this time and, of course, I loved them. I have a core memory of tailgating during a high school football game, blaring the self-titled album out of my car as some jocks and preps kept yelling at me to turn it down. I still cringe when remembering that today. When I got assigned this album, I wondered: will Slipknot stand the test of time? I doubted it, but here we are to find out. The answer, it turns out, is that I'm not sure. This is Slipknot's 4th album, and it was released almost a decade after I was listening to them in my teens. While some of the classic Slipknot, noise metal sound was there (especially in the drums), this album ultimately fell flat for me . Even though I don't listen to much that's very heavy these days, I was disappointed in this one almost because it wasn't metal enough. The slower songs were just lame, and the heavy songs didn't pack enough of a punch. I dunno, I'm sure if I went back to the self-titled from 1999, I wouldn't love it, but I'm sure at least I'd understand why I thought it was great at the time.

Better than expected.

All Hope Is Gone is a good album by Slipknot but definitely not their best. This was well into their career and their style changed a little on this album. Silver and psychosocial are decent more mainstream hard rock songs. Having s chorus that is actually sung isn’t very metal but it makes them easier to listen to. There’s a lot of typical metal stuff in here but it’s not done as well as iowa or Slipknot. Just like SOAD’s album it’s interesting why this one was picked for Slipknot over some of their others. Still would revisit some of the songs from this one. 7.1/10

All Hope is Gone is the fourth album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. This album was a departure from the nu metal genre as the band embraced groove metal instead with elements of death & thrash metal. It was critically successful, making it to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, and being certified platinum in the US & Canada. This album was a little more experimental than the band's previous ones, but also darker & heavier. It gave fans & new listeners each something to enjoy from this album. I liked how hard & gritty some songs could be and then things would slow down and actually make you feel something before turning up the rage again. I'm usually not a fan of metal, but albums like this are the exception.

I cringed when I saw this one come up, but it's actually not awful. 2.5 stars.
