Nothing caught my attention. 2 out of 5.

Too angry for me

This wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, but really not for me. In the very rare cases when I am seeking out metal it's going to be black metal, not this middle of the road sort of thing. Plus, I really dislike their aesthetics. Still better than Metallica, though...

was not my vibe, but would like to give it another chance, didn’t help i was stressed when i chose to listen to it

I just don't really care for Slipknot. They feel like they're trying too hard to be edgy, and this album was way too long for what it was. The sound was also very 2008, I can't decide if it's aged well or not.

as a teen I enjoyed the psychosocial song as we all found it funny. The album is hard for me to get through. Simply because I am not so much into this kind of music anymore. And when I was i preferred stuff like 5ffdp. That being said I always found the hate slipknot get in the metal scene cringe af. It seemed very elitist to me. 2-2.5 stars

wow not enjoyable

3/10 - loud metal does not always work for me. It reminds me of 3rd grade playing the bigs 2

I know Slipknot is an important band overall, but I’m just too old or not angry enough to appreciate it I guess. The music is good, but the screamed lyrics are just corny as hell. When Corey Taylor is actually singing it’s not too bad.

This is a 2/5 because of "i'm not a fan of metal" rather then a "this is a below average album". For all merits, this is a FANTASTIC METAL album, everything from the dual metal vocals (which is just a staple in current metalcore sorta stuff), to that mmmmm bass and the drums are just all well done. It's just something I can't mesh with well, esp since playing metal over 30% volume gives me headaches. I do prefer their more melodic stuff over their intensity... so yeah, good job Slipknot. Fav song: Child of Burning Time

My poor, poor ears. While this album would appeal to heavy metal fans, it is such a drag to listen to. The drummer is incredible, which makes this album somewhat interesting. The more mellow songs are better but nothing special. Favourite song - Snuff

I didn't hate this but would not seek it out. To my untrained ear it is all a bit samey. I listen to metal, and punk but this... It's like shouty white noise. Didn't think I'm gonna last. All hope is gone. Probably won't ever listen to this again. It's all a bit contrived. Two stars.

I cheated and put on some Evanescence instead.

4/10 Favorite Tracks: Dead Memories Least Favorite: Psychosocial, Butcher’s Hook, Wherein Lies Continue

There was a little bit of nice singing and nice guitar work. I didn't care for most of it.

This is not my preferred music genre. But it wasn’t that hard to listen to. It’s really only the vocal growling/yelling aspect of metal that turns me off.

This is alright, mid

Too thrashy and doom laden for my liking, could have done with a bit more melody. I also don't like the rough, barking style of vocals

- not really into the growling / screaming vocal style of this type of music and not really into this band .... this one is, however, a great example of what's both right and wrong with the concept of this book / website .... aside from musical tastes, this record is most certainly NOT a record that everyone "needs to hear". It's just not. It's not even considered their best by people who are INTO this band so, no. but ..... I did get to hear something I never listened to before. I think I'm better for it .... expanding horizons and all that. OK, I'm ready for more pain, hopefully tempered with some really fantastic art .... -

I wasn't aware of this album or anything Slipknot after Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (which rules), so I went into this assuming it would suck, but hoping I would be wrong. Gematria (The Killing Name) starts off hard and showcases Joey Jordison's (RIP) phenomenal drumming, but it starts to get repetitive after that and not much else stuck out. If the inclusion of a second Slipknot album on this list beyond their awesome debut album is necessary, I would say Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses should be on it instead of this one. It wasn't terrible, just not very memorable.

It is a weird juxtaposition of having a heavier look than any other band and then having these pop melodies you’re singing. But still they have a huge audience so congrats to them for finding their space. Still not a space I interact much in. My rating is negative due to personal taste, not the bands fault Rating: 2.0

I get it, but I can't buy it.

This was my first time listening to Slipknot - the whole masks, costumes and “look at me - I’m EDGY!” shtick is a bit off putting if you’re not in the target demographic. However, first impressions of this were promising - I enjoyed the distorted feedback and metal guitar work, but I still find screamed vocals hard to follow. The lyrical content is as expected with song titles like Snuff and Sulfur. They’re good at what they do but it’s not for me - sorry!

It seems to me that Slipknot were always kind of a joke in the metal community; when I was a teenager and they released their first records, they were the group young ones were listening to to show they were angry and had a rebelious mind, and in many cases they were moving rapidely from this phase. To put it nicely, they were a gate to a whole universe of music, no more, no less. With time they developed more and more their 'pop' side, and it particularly shows here, behind the blast beats. They kind of are a caricature of a heavy band who wants to fill stadium and please the crowd. Their music here is actually pretty easy to listen to: lots of melodies and melodic singing, lots of groove, and just the right amount of growl and blast beats to show they're still in the game. If it was me and a Slipknot album had to appear in this list, I would have chosen one of their two first albums, with which they came to prominence for the influence they might have on a generation of young metalheads. This album is too far from their rawer roots and too crowd-pleasing to be of real interest.

I didn't know I could feel bored listening to an album like this, but I did. I knew Psychosocial and think it's a cool song, but I think that's probably the best song on this album. I don't listen to a ton of nu metal (Wiki says this album moved more into groove metal, but I don't know the difference), but I think I have appreciated a fair amount of it throughout the years. But I think this album could have been shorter, and I wish they'd explored some of the musical ideas a little more, because they are great musicians.

This was the first Slipknot album I’ve ever listened to and I feel like a proverbial cherry has been popped. There is now a definitive before and after. A “no going back” if you will. How I felt before 😃😇 versus how I feel after 😱😡 Soiled. Besmirched. Tainted. I think I need to swim with some dolphins or snuggle a kitten or bake cookies or something to escape the despondency. This music is so upsetting and depressing and angry ☹️ When I was listening to Gematria I had to firmly grip the steering wheel of my car as I felt I might slip into a dissociative fugue and drive headlong into a ditch to end my suffering. Ok, so yes, Vendetta had some pretty insane drumming and so I have to give credit where it’s due. This Cold Black and the title track were not enjoyable on any level for me along with several other songs near the beginning of the album. All the scary screaming 😩 Child of Burning Time wasn’t too bad and Vermilion was a good song, but so sad. Snuff is great 🦆 The one guy, I don’t know how many singers there are, he really does have a very nice voice. Is there more than one singer? Surely the screaming man can’t be the same as the nice voiced man. I’ve listened to the entire hour and twelve minutes while trying really hard to not pay attention to the lyrics. True to the title it really is a hopeless sounding album. My honest opinion is that the songs that don’t include a bunch of screaming are pretty ok not taking into account the lyrics. I like them more than I thought. But unless my goal is to make myself feel like garbage I see no reason to listen to this album in its entirety ever again!!!!!

Drums: awesome. Guitar: great. Bass: into it. Vocals: no. Lyrics: Hell no. I'll day 2? Maybe 2.5. Definitely a round down.

Tried listening to this in the morning... not a good time to listen to Slipknot I don't think. Some of the riffs and grooves are pretty awesome actually, but Corey Taylor's vocals have never really been my favorite. It's pretty insane how good of a drummer Joey Jordison was. Yeah not getting through this bad boy at 8:00 AM, maybe later.

Certainly had by the end of this album

Albumi #116, 26.11.2024 Slipknotin neljäs albumi julkaistiin vuonna 2008. Slipknot on taitavaa musisointia, mutta en saa vieläkään kiinni mistään.

I’m sure this was great for Slipknot or Metal fans when this came out, but it’s not for me. Maybe only one or two songs that I would listen to again. Good production, but I don’t think there’s any good songwriting happening.

ok BRO just don't hit me BRO

Now I really expected to hate this but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. So low expectations have given this an extra star

I got Slipknot's self-titled album on this generator a while ago and was pleasantly surprised that I quite liked it. This is more like what I expected to think of Slipknot.

I had never listened to Slipknot before this. The first half was very interesting like a trashy mashup of Pantera and Queensrÿche. Then Vendetta is terrible and after that all the numetal tropes show their ugly head.

Compared with the other Slipknot album, I enjoyed this a lot more. It's still not really my thing but at least it's listenable. 2.5/5

I think this album was...fine. The guitar riffs and drum parts were a lot of fun, but I can't get into the screaming too much. Now, when they sang more calmly, it was very impressive. Sometimes the screaming is appropriate, but it is a lot. Prob more like a 2.5 Liked Songs: "Snuff" (I LOVED this one) , "Sulfur" , "Dead Memories" , "Psychosocial"

No thanks

not as bad as I expected. turns out all this time slipknot was kind of generic metal!

I listened to two songs and that was enough. I’m glad they exist for other people to enjoy.

Pretty baffling pick for a Slipknot record, as this is comfortably their worst. Psychosocial is good though.

This could have crept into 3 stars but some of them are just too noisy

Man this is angry music. I can't criticize the quality of the playing but this doesn't have a ton of depth, just expression. It makes sense to have on the list but it's not great.

Okay, not the best day for me and this music. I'm in the quiet woods and I need to get through this. There are some interesting melodies hidden in the chaos. I get why this is here for this genre of music. Probably won't revisit.

The drums make this album not as boring as it seems to be. Everything else is flat. I've never been a huge Slipknot fan.

Unlike a lot of reviews on this page, I don’t a a predisposes hatred of Slipknot’s sound or their campy imagery. In fact, I’d say it’s fully justified that they have an entry in this list - if for no other reason than their irrefutable effect on Metal’s assimilation into wider consciousness during the early to mid-2000s. But this isn’t a strong cut from them, and having two of their records on such a list is pushing it a bit. For a band renowned for their bulky riffs and pounding drums, I actually thought the production on this album was shockingly weedy at points. And whatever demented urge possessed Corey Taylor to pen “Snuff” for a Slipknot record better not cross my threshold anytime soon - he either needs an exorcist or sectioned for such a schmaltzy misstep. Not a great record to my ear and a bit of a bloated mess.

2.5 stars. It's fine. Album is at it's best when the driving double bass pedal drumming and speeding guitar rhythms carry it. The alt rock and acoustic tracks are so forced and out of place.

Not to my taste

I think had you asked me to rate this album when I was younger I would have given it a pretty good 4 star review - Slipknkot was relatively big news for my corner of the music world. But as I've gotten older and changed to other types of metal I come to realize its a little bland at times. There are still some diamonds on this album like psychosocial and snuff, but most of the other songs are pretty forgettable.

So far, this album is my favorite of the Slipknots on the list. Having said that , Slipknot has multiple albums on this list while classic thrash bands like Suicidal Tendencies have zero albums on this list. That seems nutty.

When Corey Taylor sings like Corey Taylor, I'm into it. When he sings like he's in Slipknot, hard pass

definitely not my style

This is not one of my favorites, sorry.

So kind of a brutal album. I'm probably not the audience for this, but there definitely were some things that I enjoyed. I really liked the second track, Gematria. It's a pretty awesome way to start the record. The drums are heavy and piercing. The tempo is really quick and it almost feels like a hardcore / punk song, but still very metal. Being someone who loves punk, I enjoyed that. Then the album turns to nu-metal, which just isn't my taste. It starts feeling like sound boy music. It comes back to me on This Cold Black, where it starts feeling more metal again. But man, this album is aggressive and angry. I think I get the hype. There's definitely some cool elements.

6/10 - (почти) ню-метал со вкусом денег

Slipknot deliver exactly what you'd expect: pummeling guitars, speed drumming, and Corey Taylor screaming like a man on fire. For the genre, this is above average, with a handful of riffs that actually stick. But heavy metal has a ceiling, and this album doesn't break through that ceiling. 5 out of 10, rounding down.

Partial to some slipknot but this is one of their worst.

I was really expecting to hate this and though I don't like most of it, I came away somewhat unscathed. Once you get past, the annoying, screamy, barking vocals, the music is your standard death-thrash metal, alongside contrasting songs, with tamer vocals backed with music more reminiscent to a mid-90's, pop-metal grunge style. If you don't have to visualize the band in their goofy get-ups, it's tolerable, so it's their image and look I hate a lot. Credit goes to the musicianship, the drumming is amazing and the bass and guitar playing are dazzling at times. Definitely, in the category of their bark is worse than their bite. All hope is gone, I'm giving this a grade higher than a 1.

Furious onslaught Tortuously screamed vocals Massacre music

Not bad but not my cup of tea. The vocals are hard for me to overcome 2.5 stars

While most tracks I didn't like (that alt/experimental rock feel again), the track "Snuff" was less experimental and more modern rock which was more enjoyable.

There are no lows and highs to this, just flat, boring, overly distorted riffs and screaming that surely only appeals to edgy teenagers. Distortion is great when used right, but when over used like this it just becomes white noise.

All Hope is Gone Indeed.

not a fan of this genre at all. don't care for the rage/gutteral shouting at all. the only reason this is a 2 instead of a 1 is that when lyrics are sung & not shouted......he's got a nice voice. lyrics still super dark

I was surprised at how much I was OK with this album. I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to get through the full offering but found myself inadvertently head banging while listening through.

Didn't really care for this. There's screaming that I like and there's screaming I don't like - this album is a great example of the guttural "trying to impress you" screaming I don't like. The best parts of the album are when it's at its farthest from itself ("Snuff"). The darkness/nihilism in the lyrics comes off as mostly vapid to me. It feels like it's trying to be shocking... maybe it was in 2008 but it's pretty toothless now. Lastly, at 57:57 this is also just too big a dose of this for me (and the version I streamed had a handful of bonus tracks that added another 14 minutes).

Not my taste, but definitely lots of effort put into it. I think I just don't like the scream singing. I would give it a one but the artistry required makes me realize it deserves a two.

Terrible

Never heard this album before. I'll start by saying this isn't my type of music, and not something I will probably listen to in the future. Having said that, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, and I appreciate the variety on this album.

The screamo is not for me.

Rippin drums, guitar and bass. I enjoyed parts of this more than I thought I would. There were some fun time changes and arrangements. Ultimately, I don’t need the angsty angry vibes in my life, but I get it.

Bit more tuneful than I anticipated. Exhausting though

Not really my thing, but not disastrous

it's fine. not actively bad or anything but really not my thing, and not inspiring enough to make myself want to be INTO that thing.

Some songs are really good but back to back you realise how shallow it all is. It feels a little over produced and lacks authenticity. I know they are looked down upon by the hardcore metal/punk crowd and I kind of get it

Really can't get into it. Almost finished listening to it and having trouble putting up with it.

More melodic than I was expecting, but not really my thing.

The final two tracks, Vermilion, Pt. 2 and Til We Die were barely listenable. Up until then it was agitated, bloodthirsty garbage.

Some good songs but a bit samey. Not for me.

started out ok then got kinda boring

I know some people really connect with this type of music but I am not one of them. This could not be further from my vibe. The lead singer’s over the top vocals sound ridic to me. But at least overall it sounds like music I guess. And the other guy’s vocals are ok sometimes. Or maybe it’s the same guy changing his voice. I don’t know.

Good playing, good production. Cheesy as hell.

Alright dude, we get it. You have a double kick drum. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to take away from this other than unbridled anxiety and a headache.

Slipknot always struck me as daytime television heavy/hardcore metal; you can find me outside until primetime rolls around.

All Hope Is Gone is the fourth studio album by Slipknot, originally released in 2008. This one was a surprise to see on this list. Some random late career Slipknot album? I can see including their debut or even Iowa, but this one was certainly an interesting choice. By this time, Slipknot was essentially trying to move away from the nu metal sound. In 2008 that type of sound was horribly outdated. They really switched it up on this record, including more melodic hooks and even an acoustic track! They were definitely trying to pander to the emo/scene crowd. Although some of the hooks are decent, the songwriting remains weak. Too many cliche "sad boy metal" lyrics and lazy rhyming schemes. I also think their reputation as a nu metal band proceeds them. I still see them as kinda cringe dudes who try too hard to be edgy and creepy, which I guess they are. They're like what a teenager will look up when trying to get into metal, all the cliches are there.

I know that a lot of people love Slipknot. I’m definitely not on that list.

Not for me personally but I can appreciate it for what it is. Not something I need to listen to again, though the intro Gematria is pretty cool.

Ermm, I've actively avoided this and bands like this for the last 20 years. I gave it a listen, but this is music to smash things - it doesn't do anything good for my mood. I'm sure for it's genre it's great, but I can only give it a 2.

It's not my style of music but it wasn't a bad listen.

I was going to give it a 3 because I weirdly did not hate listening to it, though I'll never ever do it again. I ended up deciding on a 2 because 70 minutes of this is just way too long.

Emo nu metal, from, wait, what? 2008?! I'd give you the self titled and/or Iowa as massive genre defining albums, but this one? This band really cashed in on the last gasps of the CD buying era huh? The CD era means it's way too long, both individual tracks and all together. It's the signature combo of relentless double bass pedal drum blasts, heavy riffs with maybe a bit more groove than you'd expect, and alternating screaming vocals to build up the tension and pop punk style melodic anthemic emotional moments to release. Theres some surprising Soundgarden sounding stuff (Gehenna) that's pretty derivative but not too bad. Overall, the guitars are pretty fun: down tuned and chugging, they throw in some 80s shredding and pinch harmonics for a treat. They know what they're doing and it's only like 12° off from the hard punk/metalcore music from the late Clinton /early Bush era that I did really love, but something about this band has just always sucked. Maybe it's the fatal association with being MTV clowns trying to be hardcore on the Sprite© Mainstage® brought to you by Kia™. Favorites: Dead Memories, Gehenna

Didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would

All hope is gone, indeed. I really don’t know which I dislike more: Metal or Hip Hop. I think overall it is a tie. Today it’s metal: growling vocals, mostly unintelligible. Lyrics (if you look them up) about death and anger and how much life sucks. Everything played as fast as possible, especially the drums. Perhaps faster. All wrapped up in “scary” make-up and outfits. Really, it is all exhausting. I just can’t hate life this much. Anyway, this slipknot album isn’t as bad as I expected. But it is close. I made it 2/3 of the way through before I had to give up. 2/5

Making music like this sound like boring background noise is an achievement. Slipknot is a singles band. Listening to their albums feels like trudging through a brown swamp with brown trees and brown grass, and everything is so brown and boring, that you don't even care that an alligator bit your dick off. Not offensive or bad, just really really boring.

Not my thing

not for me

I tried and appreciate the technical skill, just not my speed/tone, even in the gym it’s grating

It had some redeeming qualities. It would be interesting to me to ask someone that really likes this genre how this album separates itself.

Insert generic comment about the technical ability of the musicians but not liking the genre of music at all here. I was surprised by a couple of the songs but other than that, I wasn’t a fan. And I somehow knew psychosocial. I’m giving it a two because I’d still rather listen to this or more Nick Cave or Tom Waits.

Yeesh. This was a tough one to get through. Some of the music was cool but I just could not get past the vocals. 1.5 stars

Un exitoso cambio de estilo para la banda de Iowa. Aún así, y a pesar de canciones como “Psychosocial” y “Dead Memories”, el disco palidece en comparación al debut de la banda o a su segundo disco.

Pure pastiche. They would do better off putting the bands they ripped off on this list. Is kiss on this list too? Because that is all they are. Musicians are talented at least. Was pleasantly surprised. What if God doesn't care? Indeed slipknot. Indeed.

I imagine this must be what incels listen to. Amazingly, in amongst the darkness, there is a single glimmer of light: 'snuff'. How did that happen - is it a different band? A properly good rock track. In fairness, there is also 'vermilion' and 'til we die' but, although in the same vein, they just aren't as good. The rest of the album is virtually unlistenable - 13 year old boys (and incels) only.

The energy of a toddler drinking espresso combined with the anger of a serial killer. Psychosocial surprised me with that nice harmonically sung chorus, though.

favourite: least favourite: it's slipknot

I could respect it for what it is, but to be honest must of the time this just sounded like really aggressive earrape.

it’s fine when they aren’t screaming but that makes up a small amount of the album unfortunately

Not quite my style. Tough heavy metal

2 ehh it’s ok. I enjoy some metal but none of the songs stuck out. The drums however were awesome

The screaming is just not my thing. I can appreciate the instrumentation though, although I find the ubiquitous double kick to be excessive (as I always do). When the singer actually sings (eg. Dead Memories, Vendetta, Snuff, Child of Burning Time, Vermilion Pt. 2, Till We Die, and to some degree Gehenna and Wherein Lies Continue), I really like the sound and everything is great! I had to take a break halfway through because the screaming is just too much. I almost didn't make it through the whole album because it was just so awful to listen to the screaming songs. I would give it 1 star, but the "actual singing" songs were really good. I won't be listening to this album (as a whole) ever again, but the songs I liked were really good and I would listen again. Two stars.

Jesus Christ

Pas mon style, c'est un peu trop agressif (1 heure à crier dans les oreilles 😬). Mais la musique est pas mal => 2

Not my favorite slipknot album. Very angry.

This was kind of hard to rate, because it does have a few pretty good, well-executed songs. Subtle as a Panzer attack, but I don't hate it. As a cohesive work, this was pretty well done. My issues with this are primarily with the quality of the vocals, which are flatly irritating, and the generally grim overall vibe. Quality-wise, this is probably on the higher end for this genre of music. But it's not entertaining at all to me. Fave Songs: Dead Memories, Snuff, Gematria (The Killing Name), Vendetta

I waffled between giving this 1 or 2 stars because, while I didn’t completely hate it, I was so bored. Plus most songs are too long. Then “Snuff” came on, which I really enjoyed. That’s really the only highlight.

There was a guy in one of my classes who would play this on his computer (it was so loud you could hear it through his headphones) and all I could think is "Who would listen to this unironically?" After listening to this I think I'm even less sure.

Tried really hard but just could not get into it. I like heavy rock but this probably too metal for me to fully enjoy 4/10

Ei helvetti - tämähän jaksoi viihdyttää kolme neljäsosaa kestostaan, enkä onneksi edes keskittynyt sanoihin. Mutta missäköhän todellisuudessa soittaisin levyn uudelleen?

1.5/5. Not for me. But I can see how others would enjoy this - that is those who don't enjoy things.

I thoroughly enjoy hard/heavy music - so Zeppelin, Sabbath, Nazareth, UFO, Iron Maiden, Tool, etc. - are all in my wheelhouse, but speed and thrash metal, have never really appealed to me... The songs on this album that simply trying to play as fast as possible, along with less-than-serviceable vocals - did nothing for me... Just because a drummer has mastered the double bass pedal from a speed perspective, doesn't mean that you should use it all the time... That said, the moments that I enjoyed on this album, were the ones where things were changed up a bit... Slower tempo, and much cleaner vocals (i.e. not sure if it's the same dude who growl/screams, that also did the cleaner, more melodic vocals) were the songs that I gravitated to... Be tracks IMO were the run of "Sulfur", "Psychosocial", & "Dead Memories" early in the album... Also enjoyed "Snuff", and then the back-to-back of "Childe Of Burning Time" & "Vermilion - Part 2" near the end of the album were also pretty well-done...

i actually enjoyed the music my problem with this genre is the unnecessary aggressive shouting from men

Not for me.

Fast guitar playing!!!

Never cared for the appeal in this band/gimmick.

Really good musicianship, had never listened to them before. No songs super stood out though there were nice moments

When Slipknot's popularity peaked with All Hope Is Gone in 2008, it was basically all downhill from there. It was both a commercial and critical success for the band, though it was a departure from key tonal elements that made them so popular in the first place. This was done in favor of a more mainstream metal sound, which proved to successful for this release, but detrimental therein after. This is Slipknot's Black Album. Psychosocial was a big hit for them, and for good reason. It's kind of their poppiest metal song if that makes sense? Melodic and catchy chorus, chant parts for audiences to contribute, plus a little breakdown for the metalcore bros. Something for everyone. I think the rest of the album is extremely middling. I'm listening to metal but I feel like it's a shell of the genre. What other metal releases were there in 2008? Gojira, Opeth, and Meshuggah all released stuff that year so I guess prog metal was having a moment. Maybe that would've been a good move for Slipknot, but then again maybe they're not capable of progressive songwriting. When everything sounds the same, how progressive can your music really be?

Didnt hate it but didnt love it either. Faith no more influences with some anthrax and megadeth thrown in. Quite generic thrash with slick production.

Bit harsh, but I can honestly say I only really liked two songs. First song (Gematria) gave me high hopes for the album, but everything else fell kind of fell flat in comparison. It just wasn't enough for me to rate it any higher.

Feel harsh for saying it but I didn't like the majority of songs on it. I don't think slipknot is for me. Gematria was amazing though and in my regular rotation of songs now but the rest fell flat for me.

This is a drumfest and I don't like drumfests, if not for Gehenna this would've been an 1

I’ll be honest: I really struggled getting through this album. Screamo is NOT my thing LMAO!! However, that being said, I did go into this album expecting to give it a 1 star review, given that I rate solely based off of personal enjoyment. A few songs surprised me though! In particular, the songs “Dead Memories” and “Snuff” were surprisingly nice. I find I like Slipknot most when the vocalist actually SINGS, though unfortunately those moments are far and in between. Probably will never listen again, but I liked more songs than I thought I would.

I found myself grooving to songs like Gehenna that are probably inspired by the vocals and guitars of Alice in Chains etc. But then the Red Bull Speedball drums and the growly reak vocals don't do anything for me. The lyrics are pretty terrible throughout. Amazing to see all the accolades this band has pulled. I just find a lot of it actually isn't that innovative.

“Gematria” is awful, but 1:30 into “Sulfur” you can see Slipknot’s potential. When Corey Taylor actually sings, and really cuts loose, Slipknot can compete with the best nu metal. However, that happens far too rarely, and the best nu metal isn’t even that good anyway. The majority of “All Hope is Gone” consists of growling and incessant kick drums, with cringy lyrics piled on top. But from a band that identifies members by number and wears goofy horror masks and matching jumpsuits, I’m not sure what better could really be expected.

dit is vrij loos. 2 sterren voor de drums

Definitely heard of Slipknot, had a friend who used to love heavy metal. I’ve never been a fan though so expecting a quick decision on this. Trying to go in with an open mind though, might have changed my mind as haven’t tried it for a long time. Actually quite enjoying the intensity and guitar sounds straight off the bat. Never liked the vocals/screaming. Vocals definitely not my thing still, but quite enjoy the rest of the music… might have to put it as a high 2/5.

Fun for a while, then it got a little boring. I preferred the monster voice to the singing voice. Drums sounded terrific throughout.

There's only so much quadruple kick drum and distortion a human can handle. Too much shouting and unnecessary angst. I tried, and listened to all of this but won't be revisiting this one.

Gotta say, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The aggression is there, no doubt, but it felt a bit like they were trying too hard to recapture the intensity of their earlier work. The experimentation with different styles didn't always land smoothly, and some tracks felt a bit disjointed. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for their earlier stuff, but this one didn't resonate with me as much.

"Mother nature is a coward, mother nature is a whore" As compared to "Rust in peace," by Megadeth, which I reviewed a couple of weeks prior, this album sucks. Although metal riffs are hard to make bad, and I enjoyed all of the pinch harmonics used, I didn't hear any super unique or interesting melodies in the guitar of this album, and the lyrics were pretty mediocre and sound like they're trying too hard at times. I also find it funny that the two most-played songs off the album: T4- "Psychosocial" and T11- "Snuff" are both the most poppy and parts sound more like My chemical romance than anything that would be considered metal. I don't consider myself a metalhead, and i'm not trying to call anyone a poser or bash anyone's music tastes, but it's kind of funny how the majority of "Slipknot fans" listen to stuff that hardly sounds like Slipknot. All of the songs blended together, and at 1hr 10mins, I split this album into two listening sessions, which probably saved me a headache. At the end of the very last song, I felt particularly tired of listening to it, and I feel like this album could've done with some more trimming. 2/5

The music is good the vocals are not

Slipknot? Why? I'm currently into folk and acoustic guitar music. This isn't going to end well. I don't understand the need for extreme overdrive unless you aren't good at playing guitar. I also don't understand the whole scream singing stuff and this is muted compared to some of the screamo I remember listening too as an angsty teenage high schooler. I don't understand anything being \"sung\". The drumming is pretty amazing though. Well this just isn't my cup of tea. Hard to call it music outside of the drumming, which is legit very impressive. 3 tracks in and I just can't...definitely not something you need to hear before you die. 2 out of 5 just for the drummer, everything else is a 0.

Not for me

Well made but not for me.

really not great. Slipknot's early stuff is really great but I think that the songwriting is just not as strong, ferocious, heavy, or interestin

Well, well, said the rocking chair! Predictably fast trash metal with mouth-full-of-gravel spoken lyrics. 'This cold black' was half decent. 2/5

Ik houd wel van harde metalen, maar dit is toch meer voor de jongere generatie.

Not a big metal fan but it was fun to listen to!

Including this but not Iowa is criminal. This album is still solid though. Slipknot gets a bad wrap honestly. They rock.

Not as bad as I thought it'd be as I'm more familiar with their earlier stuff. A bit more melodic death and even some black metal elements to it. They are technically good musicians, but the songwriting is just... boring.

Can’t believe I just listened to slipknot for an hour straight. Pretty long album. Never could get into them when I was younger and this confirms that. Just not for me, but I did enjoy some moments and can respect it.

Wasn’t as bad as I expected although I had to skip a couple songs.

Die Gitarrenparts sind zum Teil ganz cool. Gesang ist insgesamt eher schwach. 2-3

Hmm, hate to say it but this really didn't do anything for me, but I can respect the quality of the music at least. I think this genre might not appeal to me

2/5. Not even their marquee album. I just cannot get into Slipknot similar to how I cannot get into Disturbed. Their driving metal tones just are hard on the ears along with the lead singers screaming. I actually find his voice to be quite good when he is not screaming, but those moments are few and far between.

Absolutely exhausting. My ears are burning. It's a no from me.

2/12, 17%

Groove meta. No le pongo un 1 porque la última canción, 'Til We Die, se deja escuchar.

Drums too good to give a 1

The dread I felt when seeing this pop up... I guess the best thing I can say is that it was slightly better than I expected. But I can't say anything else nice.

Maybe 2.5, starts off well but becomes tiresome by the end. This is very much stadium metal, just with allusions to death/thrash metal - clearly designed for mass gatherings where I'm sure they still excel. I saw Slipknot on their first UK tour (1999/early 2000?) and haven't really kept up with them since Iowa, appreciated the chance to reacquaint myself though

I can't take any of this music seriously. It's SO serious it just kills me. Production sounds fine, but this strikes me like the DC movies - it's for people who wish the silly thing they like was taken very very seriously.

A band that was coming into its own during my youth, yet one that utterly passed me by. On this evidence, I'm not too bothered. By a long chalk the best songs are those that lean into the heavier end of the nu-metal spectrum. That said, the blast beats sometimes sound like a rather proficient typist, and tell me - what are Slipknot doing with clean vocalist / gruff vocalist that wasn't already perfected by Aqua? The slower or more quiet songs are an absolute slurry of post-grunge mediocrity. The production is hideous, like it was all filtered through a cardboard tube. Sorry, but this reviewer is far from becoming a maggot on the strength of All Hope Is Gone.

gonna be honest. i did not listen to the second half of this album it could be the best thing ever made and i would never know Favorite Track: Psychosocial, I guess 2-2.5/5

boring and depressive

4/10. I don't know if this album was better than the other Slipknot album, if Slipknot has grown on me, or if I've just heard more music I like less now, but this was better than expected.

Tur att jag inte gillar det här. Det är ju riktigt tråkigt.

Más melódico de lo que creí. No se estructura bien como disco

At times, this was just kind of generic speed metal and I would think it was fine, but definitely not for me. Then, it would veer into nu metal melodrama and I could not stand it. Another baffling inclusion on the list.

This is not my type of music. I did pleasantly enjoy the more melodic tracks on the album, as I expected just nu-metal through the whole album. I'm probably not smart enough to understand the inclusion of this album as a "must listen." It feels like there is nothing new here that Slipknot has done other than slightly adjust their sound.

I confess I couldn't get past the second song. What are they so angry about?

What does it say that I think the best song on this album is the ballad? The record all feels a little bit derivative, it's not all LOUD SCREAMING which is a relief, but you'd think these guys would sound a little less generic.

I think I will give this album a 2. There are some redeeming features shockingly haha! The drums are fucking insane and I do not know how a human can produce that sounds with drum sticks and a kit!! So impressive and hard to ignore. Some cool melodic sections with harmonies as well as the guttural shouting and chanting. Very authentic human emotions and passion! However, it's so self-indulgent and not in a funny way that I can get behind like some cheesy 90s rom com soundtracks for example where they're singing about heart break. I don't know anything about metal and I don't have a sophisticated opinion but I do quite like the Linkin Park esque vocals (like on Sulfur). Have to admit I'm not sure I will fully listen to all of every single song on this album, I may get the jist and skip on, oops!

I just really don't want to listen to this.

Good at what they do but …

Loud and ugly for the most part.

Best Song: Snuff. It isn't a good sign that the least metal song on this ostensibly metal album is the best one. Worst Song: Psychosocial. Really didn't expect (nor enjoy) the emo-esque melodic vocals. Overall: Really just boring, repetitive metal. None of the heavy tracks did much to catch my attention. There's a lot better metal out there.

Wasnt a fan of this one. Too long and too much noise/growling, lacking song structure and anything resembling a melody

Well I gave it a go. Not really listened to much Slipknot previously, and that's not about to change after 57 mins and 57 seconds of this album. If you removed the lyrics and 'singing' style and just listened to the instrumentation and arrangement, I'd be a lot happier! There's a lot of skill going on there.

I have to admit, this way better and more palatable than I expected. I didn’t think there would be an alt rock vibe to it. It still has many problems that most metal poses to me - mainly anxiety and overwrought, weird kid at school lyrics. A high 2.

Brrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaa this album was just okaaaaaaaaay

Slipknot conjures images of mid-2000s hallway juggalos, and I’ll admit from the safe distance of 20 years that I did have a few slipknot songs on my iPod in high school that I’d listen to in secret… but not this album. With this one, I gotta say: haaate the melodic clean vocals, album is too long, and the energy drops midway for me. But I do love a cute mask, chunky jugga jugga juggajuggajugga, and 2008 angst nostalgia. (Also dang, Snuff, you a sad song 😢❤️) Love this genre but overall lukewarm on this album, it’s a high 2 from me dawg

It was fine, but did I love it? I DidKnot

Said it before, and I'll say it again. Slipknot is too far down the metal spectrum for me. Album was mostly noise, but there were some highlights. Favorite track: Dead Memories

Wow. So much angst.

This is like a 2.5 I guess, not quite my thing, but still some things I appreciate as well. I'm rounding it down, but that's just me being harsh on these ratings. Glad to have listened to it once, that was probably plenty lol

i'm no slipknot aficionado but surely this isn't the one album you should listen to of theirs or the one that defined a new genre. if anything i find this a little tame for slpiknot and almost commercial.

Better than expected.

I cringed when I saw this one come up, but it's actually not awful. 2.5 stars.

Prefer Corey's singing in Stone Sour, here it's generally a bit too much "Look at me being brutal". There's some cool riffs but at times it feels the aim is to have all the elements added together to be as heavy as possible than to actually write a song. 2.5/5

I've listened to a whole Slipknot album now. Gematria actually rips and a lot of the early songs aren't half bad. Lots of filler, though, and not much interesting outside the fast stuff.

Too hard for me to enjoy

Not as terrible as expected, still pretty terrible

Absolutely not my thing

A few bangers but a lot of skippable tracks. Mix is super clean, compressed and completely lifeless. Should have picked Iowa.

This album has some interesting moments, but it feels very generic. It is possible that this is because Slipknot defined a sound that became popular, but I think there are previous bands who make music like this that sounds more musically compelling. Standout songs are Psychosocial and Dead Memories.

It’s just a bit much for me some of the time but a good album

Groove meta. No le pongo un 1 porque la última canción, 'Til We Die, se deja escuchar.

7th September 2022 Listened on the drive back from Bristol having been in the office for the stay connected broadcast. Not my bag. Prefer the slightly lighter metal from Korn.

This album certainly lives up to its title. Never a fan of the Cookie Monster vocals of a lot of modern metal. I found the next album had more melody, and I liked that more. Generally, I prefer Corey in Stone Sour to most of the Slipknot stuff.

I was not excited to see Slipknot come up the days recommendation. Whenever a major component of the vocals is screaming, the album is destined for a poor review from me. I don't know if the musicians are playing characters. I guess I'm not in on the joke. I don't want to hear all of the noise, or all of the complaints. I was surprised to hear more typical singing than I thought I would. I could have liked the album less, but I did not like this album.

Yet another ex-1001 album! http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex I like Slipknot, their earlier albums are better.

It's not entirely without merit, had to look hard for it though. I think it's the drumming

This was a bit tricky to review. There were moments I was surprised to find I liked. It sometimes makes me laugh to hear the scary monster muppet voice proclaim doom. This isn’t going to be my thing, but I appreciated the exposure today.

Very harsh sounding speed metal with occasional breaks for actual singing. I don't hate it but I wouldn't listen to it again. The lyrics are very dark and I just don't get the whole costume thing.

I will never listen to this again. Having said that, it was better than I expected. The guitar playing was good if a little too busy for my taste and when the melodic singer was in focus I enjoyed the music more. When the other guy was singing…. Not for me.

Not my style

Like most music in this genre, I enjoy the non screaming parts and dislike the rest. Unfortunately not enough of the non-screaming for me to like it.

It's just too much for me. Not my thing, too heavy.

I recognize the quality of the album but I just can’t get much enjoyment from this type of music. The drum work was a highlight of it, but just couldn’t get into it. 4/10

Interesting album, not a big Slipknot fan, but there were some tracks that I thought were okay. Probably not something I’d listen to again

Like a Trashmetal, it's not bad. It has melodies moments that it makes better this band.

What I know about slipknot I don’t like but I’ll still give it a fair chance… The album starts with execute the track is basically radio noise slowly forming int slipknot noise fine opener. It flows perfectly into gematria ( the killing name), it’s pretty much what I imagined really good instrumental work but the slipknot screaming isn’t my thing. The lyrics are well written though. The first bit to sulfur is really cool intro which does come back but the verses are very slipknot then the chorus kinda reminds me of linkin park. Psychosocial is really the side of metal I don’t like and in this one I don’t think the chorus fits in the song and the bridge does work but it’s still more of the same thing. Dead memories is slightly better theres not any of the annoying angry screaming and it comes with some really cool guitar work. Vendetta starts with this cool whirling intro again, it’s definitely a better song theres a bit of the annoying shouty voice but it comes in really nicely and isn’t there for much of the song. Probably my favourite here so far! Butchers hook is the full return to the slipknot sound and I don’t know if it is much better than earlier or i’am just numbed by the sound but I enjoyed the screaming more than the singing on this one. Then is Gehenna a much slower song it’s kinda got a spooky crawling feeling to this song and then the screaming crashes in which makes a good build up but it’s not my favourite use of the scream. 6 mins though maybe a lil too long. Next is this cold black one of the more typical slipknot songs, pulsating heavy rhythm and probably the most screaming on the whole album. Yeah not my kinda song. Wherein lies continues is another one of the typical slipknot songs but it’s much slower it’s got a cool instrumental break but it’s only a small detail. Not a fan. Snuff is probably the best on here ( or maybe vendetta but they’re close) it’s a slower more dramatic sounding song slowly building up man, I love songs like this. The album ends on all hope is gone the most slipknot song on here It’s really in your face and other than the name it makes no sense as the closer. When I looked at some rankings while writing this review I really disagreed especially on vendetta and butchers hook. So it’s of course not my kinda thing. There’s about 2 I really liked and maybe 3 extra that were also enjoyable but I can still only give it a 2/5.

This kind of music is insanely outdated and very cringe but there’s something about the sound that I don’t totally hate. And when there’s only a modest amount of screaming like on psychosocial it’s actually not bad

Thankfully, there’s a song and an album called All Hope Is Gone so i feel like i did try to listen to this in full but Alexa scuppered my efforts by just playing the single. 2 starts for the talent but nothing I want to listen to.

If you’re not paying too much attention while this is on it’s not a bad record. The key is being somewhat distracted with it on and kind of tune into it sometimes. Then it isn’t always horrible.

Wow I'm surprised this album is on this list... It's one of the weakest albums from Slipknot. I'm remember when this was released in 2008, I already take some time to digest some of the songs. From .execute. until Sulfur, it's pretty solid. Psychosocial is not one of my favorites and Dead Memories has a very cool instrumental. Then, from this part the album becomes WEIRD. Super forgettable songs. I enjoy the ending with All Hope Is Gone and also the bonus tracks from the special edition (Child Of Burning Time and Til We Die). Unfortunately is was also the last album to have the full lineup with Paul, Joey and Chris :(

Quelques moments de lucidité.

j'appréhendais l'écoute de cet album et j'avais plus ou moins raison, cependant j'ai quand même passé environ 14 minutes appréciables au total

Look, I don't think this is good music; but if this is what you needed to get you through the tumultuous years of adolescence, then, fine, I'm not going to begrudge you. But if I finish this project and don't come across a single pop-punk album to satisfy my own angsty teenage nostalgia, then I'm gonna be very unhappy.

Don't listen to it while playing Rocket League

Good for the genre, not my thing these days.

Drumming was the best part, but this was not good.

Was into slipknot when I was in middle school but outgrew them before this album came out. Some good moments on here but the production lets the album down. It sounds very muddy

More heavy technical noise that I'll never listen to

Maybe not my thing, but it wasn't terrible. Not sure I'll listen again, but it was good to learn what Slipknot are about. I'd heard of them but had no idea what genre/style they were.

Didn't listen to the whole thing. Some classic tracks for sure, but I'd really struggle to listen to more than a few tracks at once..

There are some real stinkers on here which is a shame cause the front of this album honestly kicks and could stand up well with earlier Slipknot releases. Most of these songs are pretty boring/derivative though

Kind of... dated? barren? metal. Lacks the catchy pop elements 5 Finger Death Punch, the crushing doom of drone metal, the historic qualities of older metal albums of yesteryear. lyrics feel overly simplistic for 2008. 2.5/5

Not really a metal fan at all so I was biased from the get go. This was not the album to convert me to a metal fan but I can see why it would be loved by fans of heavy metal. These mother fuckers can play! I did have fun headbanging to a few tracks but over all I was kind of just waiting for it to be over. Going with a 2 because damn are these dudes crazy skilled musicians. MORE DOUBLE BASS DRUM!

Was going to give you a three but the album just kept going, Slippies must enjoy a long album

This album was way better than it had any right to be. Not only that, but it got better as it went along! The worst stuff was at the beginning. But no Slipknot album needs to be over 70 minutes long. What are the Slippies thinking?

Jesus. Almost cut myself on all this edge. I like the some of the music but the vocals are just cringe.

Too heavy for me. Although surprisingly mellow at points. Teetered on pop-punk at times, maybe pop-metal?

I really don’t enjoy this genre of music, good on them tho 👍🏼

It was a no for me... Like ok I get it america sucks..NEXTTTT

I like their instrumental side. The screaming is a bit too much for me

I assume Slipknot has better

1. ezecute - 1 2. gem - 2

not for me

I am about halfway through this album., and wow, it is wearing. All the tracks truly do sound the same: heavy guitars, lots of screaming, not much else. If you like Slipknot past your teens, it's a little bit embarrassing. You can't really call this sophisticated. "All Hope Is Gone centers on themes such as anger, disaffection, obsession, and the music industry" - I think calling them "themes" is overstating things. At best, this is what the writers are singing about, this isn't a comprehensive thesis we're talking about. For the second track Gematria, I actually kind of agree with the message, "America is a killing name, we will burn your cities down". The politics are very simplistic, but maybe the incoherent rage is the point, although it didn't need to be six minutes long. That's a pretty long primal scream. The rest of the tracks are similarly overlong. I put this on pause overnight and I found myself dragging my feet getting back to it, which I wouldn't have if I was merely indifferent to it, which tells me how I really feel. One star.

i don't like this stuff

I really hate Slipknot, so going into this wasn’t fun at all. While listening I felt mostly annoyed and bored. It’s not the worst album they’ve ever made, but it’s still very bad in my opinion. The aggression feels forced, the songs are overlong and repetitive, and the whole thing lacks real inspiration. There are a few moments where the heaviness almost works, but most of the time it just drags and sounds like the band going through the motions. The production is big and loud, yet it still feels empty. Honestly, I didn’t want to give it a proper listen and I have zero desire to ever put it on again. If you’re not already a fan of the band, there’s really no reason to check this one out.

When you listen to this album you feel that all hope is gone. Most of it is unlistenable. God awful music Seem to be trying to shock their audience. I am shocked that they are so bad. A terrible album. One star. I wish I could give it zero.

Basic posturing.

Album #198 Slipknot: All Hope Is Gone This list really just has no criteria for which albums are included. I guess the argument for Slipknot would be their mainstream appeal within the 2000s, and if that is the case, than I better see some Killers and Arctic Monkeys on this list. As far as I can tell, amongst nu-metal bands, Slipknot are seen as posers and a novelty, not to mention that this is an album that came out a decade after the band’s peak in popularity, at which point the gimmick had already outstayed its welcome. To be honest, since I don’t listen to metal anyway, I couldn’t care less if they are posers or not, and the Halloween mask gimmick doesn’t really bother me as I enjoy some theatrics and showmanship with my music. What does bother me, however, is the hour of mind-numbing, one-note, boring drivel that the band produced. Honestly, I wish that they were bigger posers because the only songs that I got some enjoyment out of were when they stopped growling and started singing. I can see the comparisons to a KISS since, based on their appearance, you would expect straight violence, yet some tracks on here were borderline pop rock. Anyway, just a waste of my time, and picks like this only help to further my distrust of metal and its clown show subgenres like nu-metal. Best Tracks: Snuff, Dead Memories, Sulfur Worst Track: Wherein Lies Continue Score out of 10: 3

Ok but the drums were pretty crazy

Really, two albums for these guys? Come on!

Did Not Listen - No Interest

Guitar and drums are noteworthy. But does an angry band make you great?!?

I know all y'all think Brian Ferentz's offences were the worst thing to ever come out of Iowa but I assure you that you're wrong. (Did I write this review before listenting to a note? Yes. Was I wrong? Not at all.)

Hmmm pretty dire but maybe not as dire as I thought it would be, still will never darken its door again. Pomp metal and thrash metal.

i fucking hated it

satanic stuff NO

Just….awful. I couldn’t make it past the first three tracks. File this one under “Life’s Too Short “.

Never heard of 'em! But the cover art makes me hostile and suspicious. Listened to some part of every song. Yuck. Docked one star for being from Iowa. Plus which, they wear stupid masks. Lame.

Nope. Mind not changed. Slipknot still very weird pretend-metal for teenage bullies on their way to MAGA-land.

Honestly, I did try. But this is just intolerable. And from what I've gathered, even fans of this genre don't like this record. Another mysterious inclusion. Instead of listening to all of it, after I gave up I went to the back up list of the extra albums NOT included in the original list and chose one at random. I ended up with Stone Roses' 1994 Album, which I don't even recall the name of anymore. It was deeply unmemorable and would have earned a 2. So it goes.

If I could type out a fart noise I would.

No puedo, lo intenté

Not a good album to listen to on the way to work at 4 am. Correction not a good album to listen to at all.

It’s like I’m being punished for taking 2 weeks off from this list.

all hope is gone that i will ever like this band.

Headache music Appreciate the band and the influence they have on heavy music, but not for me

Too much screaming

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

This is some intense death metal. Way too crazy for me.

Terrible

An easy listen, you just don't.

I hate this. If I could give it 0 stars I would. This is really the only genre of music where I just don't understand how anyone could like it. Why do you like being screamed at? Are you okay? The moments in songs where the lead singer wasn't screaming at me, I thought it was slightly better, but I didn't like the instrumentation. I just felt like there was so much going on and it was overwhelming to me. Snuff is the only exception to everything I've said.

Tigidou boudoum boum. J'aime mieux Frank Sinatra.

Ikke for meg, klarte ikke komme gjennom hele. Én time slipknot unner jeg ingen.

Måtte skippe gjennom denne. Det er ingenting her som appellerer til meg. Det verste var den nu-metal vokalen.

i gotta be honest. i listened to 3 songs then decided im not gonna finish it. i am not a fan of men screaming at me. whatever they have to say, they can whisper it. shush

If you’re even into this sound, Limp Bizkit did it best. Sorry Nu-Metal, just not that into you.

All hope is gone that I will ever like this kind of music.

No thank you (Keenan I apologize)

not only do i not like this genre, but this seems like not an essential example of the genre. carly said "this sounds like music high school boys would like. you should tell keenan to listen" lol

I'm not a Slipknot fan.
