Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Not a bad album. I’m not a biggest knot fan. A little too hard for my taste but if you listen to the drum fills they are really good. I tend to find myself listening to just the drums rather then the overall song.

The biggest metal band of my generation, one I never really got into when I was a teenager even though I liked heavier music back then. They were both too weird but also too well known. The band everyone asked if you liked when you said you were into metal. I’m not much of a metal head these days. But I did enjoy this more than I expected this morning, not sure if I’d rush back to it, or start requesting slipknot at parties anytime soon though…

This is an experience to be sure and I think it’s ok with some albums, this being one of them, to say I’m glad I listened to it; the band are very good at what they do; but I’m also glad I don’t have to listen to it again. Well done lads. System well and truly smashed.

I didn’t hate it, just the screaming vocals, otherwise it was alright although I probably wouldn’t seek them out. Consequently low 3*

Hard to rate. I enjoyed it and Psychosocial is an absolute banger but not their best and whilst I feel I do need to rep for the metal in the list, its not quite a 4.

it is what it is. growls...melody...growls...melody...repeat

It's alright. Prefer their earlier stuff tbh.

Light Poser-metal. But don't tell anyone that I kinda like it. 🤫

J'aime bien dans l'ensemble, mais trop long.

Actually a lot better than I was expecting. Not high art by any means but perfectly listenable and or two actually decent tunes. Don't think I'll be coming back to Slipknot but my opinion of them has definitely improved.

I have been avoiding this band for a lot of years now cause i'm not into this growling rock kind of style . Still isn't but, i have to confess this is not all growling all the time. There are a lot of interesting stuff in this album to explore. The very good lyrics and the mix metal genres in it got my attention until the end. Definitely is a must for the one time listen. Hell, even the second one

Never listened to this album. I have heard tracks by Slipknot. Interesting to say the least.

I'd never taken much notice of this band - album was better than I thought it would be

Sometimes you just need machine gun drums.

Okay, so bear with me for a sec... I'll never forget the first time I listened to a full Chuck Berry album. I was baffled to go back and hear every song be the same riff with different words. It changed my understanding of interpolation, song-writing, and novelty. Slipknot is similar in the sense that they have cornered their own market and sound, but I feel like each song is practically just a slightly different iteration of the last. I think it has more to do with tone than riffing. I know Jordison was one who prized the group for it's experimentation - and the drum craft is easily the most experimental part of the listing - but the current iteration of metal is so drastically more experimental. We wouldn't have the metal we have nowadays without Slipknot. But I think the pathway they've paved, much like the pathway Chuck Berry paved, has been explored better by their successors. **I want to also acknowledge that I grew up in the era of the Christian Metal movement and *most* of my peers were involved in multiple metal bands that my *very* acoustic Christian rock group played with. So, my understanding of experimental metal is literally grassroots. That may muddy my interpretation.

IMO, the last truly great angry Slipknot album.

not my flavor of metal but ok

Looked forward to listening to a Slipknot album, it was exactly what i thought it would be. Enjoyed it, but want listen again

Takes me back to highschool.

Ekki alveg alveg mitt te (er eiginlega 3,5)

Surprisingly accessable and not as hard as I thought it would be. When the mood hits right I was enjoying it, feels immature in places though

Surprisingly diverse and with lots to like

Surprisingly diverse and some great tunes - lots to enjoy

Knot bad

I liked it, 3+

never listened to Slipnot before - quite enjoyed this good 3.5 but not a 4.

I can see how people would like this. Intense, abrasive.

Not always going to be a mood, but I appreciate that it’s engaging to begin with.

It was ok

This album is ok. Not as good as their previous work. There are a few stand out songs though such as Psycho Social. I also found that the final maybe 3rd of the tracks get just too whiney for me.

A bit generic, but it's fine. Enjoyable, upbeat metal. If I didn't have a soft spot for the genre, this score would be much lower.

it’s nice when you listen to this when you’re just an emo having with a real nervous breakdown about family, school and everything and you hear this one and you’re like “ooh, why didn’t i hear this one before?” yeah, i feel you my teenager self.

Good songs but a lotta filler

perusjuustoa ja jyystöä ei slippyn paras levy

Tusinatavaraa Ameriikan maalta.

More melodic than anticipated in spots.

The highs are high, surprisingly melodic, accessible and catchy but after an hours worth descends to being quite dirge at points. Just wanted it to end after track 9, although 'snuff' was a nice surprise and a welcome break. Chop out tracks 8-10 and you have an excellent album. Generally this is better in small doses. Singy bits > shouty bits.

3.3 - It's like the musical equivalent of drinking a shot of Fireball - less challenging and more pleasant than I would expect. Apparently Slipknot falls into the "nu metal" category, which places it in some unsavory company, mostly bands I associate with that Hot Topic store at the mall. As far as metal goes, this to me sounds pretty poppy, and positively radio friendly - the vocals are crystal clear and melodic, there are few time signature changes, the guitar lines are relatively easy to follow. I wasn't listening too closely to the lyrics but it sounds like they're edgy enough. All in all, this sounds like an album suited for a teenage market, and I can understand why the kids like it.

Never heard much Slipknot, but this was pretty good. Nothing I'd listen to all that often because I don't need the aggression... but impressive and good for a day I'm feeling extra metal.

Intenso

i am not a heavy metal fan mostly due to the vocals. but i can say that i do enjoy the guitar and drum instrumentals. there were a few songs on the album which reminded me of the theme song from BMS and that I liked

Pagüerful

alcune belle, altre inascoltabili

Not my usual cup of tea, but I liked it.

Iowa is better

Slipknot oli itselleni suht vieras bändi, jonka olin päässäni lokeroinut samaan teinimetallikategoriaan kuin esim. Children of Bodomin ja Bullet For My Valentinen.

Not usually my style but I actually didn't hate it

This album's at its best when the songs are 75% hard as hell, 25% melodic and ready for rock radio. They achieve that perfect balance on enough songs (including GOAT track "Psychosocial") where this album is worth checking out if you're curious, but the songs that mess with the ratio too much might test your patience a bit.

It was better than I thought, but while I don't hate screaming, when it's song after song it gets grating. I preferred the songs with a little more singing. I probably should've had the lyrics up but then I wouldn't be able to work, haha.

Solid slipknot shit, more singing than the other album which was a nice change up. Gotta be in the mood for this typa jam tho, not for casual listening lol

Little groovy, mixed in with some hardcore, metal, and radio-friendly rock elements. A little cringey at times, especially lyrically. I think if I had listened to this when it had originally come out (I was 16), I would've been really about this. I'm more of a fan of Volume 3, though. Favorite tracks: "Psychosocial", "All Hope is Gone", "Dead Memories"

Manages to acquire a personality during the last few songs. 6.5/10 FT: Snuff

Just what you expect from slipknot… heavy riffs, but pretty melodic at times. Quite enjoyable!

First time Slipknot listener. Probably last as well. Love metal, hate dirty vocals etc so Psychosocial and Dead Memories are among the few that interests me.

Well this was less obnoxious than their debut album, which was pure nu-metal booty stank, but it wasn't all that much better. Still rife with jonkler, madge at society type energy. At least Snuff was kind of good?

More palatable than their debut album but still no thanks

Still pretty mixed on Slipknot, and not totally sure why this album particularly appears on the list.

The back and forth of screaming and singing doesn't really work. The slow songs at the end is just not what this band should be attempting. Too much going which muddies the sound. At least the drummer is talented. 2/5 Won't listen again

There are some elements I enjoy here. By and large the instrumentals are great, and the singing is good too, however I am not a fan of the screaming (call me a Grandpa). The worst thing about this album, which ruins it for me unfortunately, are the lyrics. This feels like what a 14 year old just got told his Daddy wouldn't purchase him a motorcycle would write. I cannot take it seriously, but I am probably not the target audience. I liked this more than I expected, and maybe I would enjoy this heavy metal type stuff if the band took it more seriously.

Still not sold on Slipknot or nu metal yet. Unlike their self-titled this one has a lot of this weird melodic metal chart crossover sort of songs. Kind of Killswitch Engage-like songs; melodic clean sections juxtaposed by heavy harsh sections. However I don't think it as well done as Killswitch, maybe it's my inherent dislike of Slipknot or because of some other factor. Some songs I actually 'got' which was a surprise, like "Wherein Lies Continue" - which I quite liked the sluggish pace, and the lyrics weren't TOO bad. Though I would like to think Slipknot after writing a bunch of introspective songs about what's exactly gone wrong, they'd become happier and get rid of those issues but no, I guess that's inherent with them. Just like with devil-mentioning lyrics with Slayer I suppose. Old habits, die hard. This is a miss from me Highlight Song/s: "Gematria (The Killing Name) and "Wherein Lies Continue"

It would have been much cooler if it was a fear factory album

As someone who existed in the nu-metal/metalcore/screamo world for a bit in high school, I had already heard this album but hadn't sat down with it for a solid 15 years. The riffs are heavy, the musicians are talented, and there's some good ideas here. Slipknot produced a few half-palatable cuts over the years. That being said, even the top dogs of the genre do not hold up. This album is pessimistic, edgy, and aggressive to a fault. Sure, I heard them say something critical about America or something in there, but why are you shopping for good lyrics in the screamo aisle? Some decent breakdowns and fast paced drums are entertaining for a moment, but overall the album isn't substantial enough for any serious listening. This music is for pissed off teenagers, the occasional nostalgic chuckle, or an aggressive gym playlist. If you find this in heavy rotation it's time to shave the goatee and go outside.

Like the tunes but very cringy vocals haha

Very ehh album that I think even Slipknot would agree. Some great singles but as an album its quite boring. Joey Jordinson was something special though wasnt he? Also Corey's range saves this album. Very forgetful but Psychological is always welcome.

Not horrible, but pretty close to it. Didn’t actually ruin an exercise session, but pretty close to it. Snuff is far and away the most listenable track because the lead singer is not involved, his voice is not enjoyable and should be avoided by a large distance. Also didn’t like the extended rapid fire drumming. (1.6*s) All Hope Is Not Gone.

I was actually hoping for a Slipknot album from the list. Nu-Metal is not really the genre for me but this band was huge in the late 90s/early 2000s. I mostly steered clear. Not that I am a wuss but the masks and death themes just seemed out of my range. After listening to All Hope is Gone, I think that the band has something going but still pretty typical for the scene. Has the anguish and pain you expect. I prefer the slowed down singing over the wretch which puts "Dead Memories" and "Snuff" as lead tracks. The drums are the main event otherwise as I found the guitar work rather lack luster compared to other metal groups. I wanted some more melodic shredding but it was mostly bass lead and garbled. Overall, not too impressed by this showing but will need to hear their debut to put a final cap on my opinion of the band. Today with no original members and an overdose death in their past, the band has pretty much hung itself. 2.11 stars for knot slipping the noose.

My prior knowledge of Slipknot doesn't go beyond the surface level of crazy masks, intense metal antics and some mostly mis-informed controversy. The few songs I had been exposed to I wrote off as hardcore/thrash metal that didn't interest me. I don't typically associate with that genre of music so they were just a tangential metal band that I ignored for the most part. I've always wanted a reason to check out an album so this showing up on the list was a perfect opportunity. All Hope Is Gone, like a lot of thrash metal, is a tough one to review. The entire genre has never been my thing but I'll be damned if I can't admit that some of the best musicians live in this realm. I've been to some metal shows and truly revel at how tight the musicianship is across the board from some of the top acts. It's not something I ever go out of my way to listen to, but when I'm exposed it's hard not to appreciate the skill up and down the lineup. I imagine the practice and rehearsal sessions to truly put in a great show are beyond intense and the acts that make it through really must be dedicated to the craft. That being said, like nearly all thrash metal it's hard to keep me on board for more than a couple songs. The intensity of the beats and howling demon wretch vocals turn me off so once the initial glaze washes away I just want to move on to something more melodic. I get that some people use it as an emotional outlet or love to ride the energy of a live show but it's never been that way for me. It's unfair of me to label an entire genre this way but a lot of it personally comes off as a bunch of angry guys spewing annoying bullshit that I'm happy to avoid. I've had some friends who were Slipknot fans in the past and have had to suffer through some sessions a couple times. To each their own and for me it's just not a genre of music that interests me. To Slipknot's credit I can recognize why these guys are one of the premier acts in this realm. The masks, outfits, numbered band members etc. all add to the mystique and make them stand out for one reason or another. I get why a fan would hitch their wagon to them. There were actually a handful of songs on this album that I enjoyed, with Psychosocial and Dead Memories leading the pack. The songs I enjoyed tended to be the ones that eliminate the shouting/screaming and lean on a much more melodic smooth vocal style. There's a really strong solid voice buried in there that I find completed wasted when its surrounded by the typical thrash metal growl/shout stuff. A portion of their music is pretty accessible for a non-metal fan and I wish they leaned in that direction more. When the album wrapped it was better than I expected it to be. I'm glad I can pinpoint some of the aspects of Slipknot that made them a well known act. 2.09 stars

Tell you what, it ain’t Iowa!

Not for me.

My kid enjoyed these guys in middle school. I tuned it all out. Glad those days are behind us.

I understand the sentiment behind the music. But sometimes I think the vocalist could use a juice box and a nap. Will give them an extra star this time because of the few tracks that weren’t so screamy/mumbly.

All Hope Is Gone - Slipknot 2007 Processing All Hope Is Gone leaves a very clear impression: it is undeniably loud, but it ultimately fails to captivate. The listening experience passes by without leaving any outlasting memories, and the tracklist lacks any definitive highlights that demand a revisit. While it is certainly not total garbage to be thrown away, it lands as a purely passable metal release that struggles to stick with the listener. 2/5

Somehow, I don’t hate Slipknot

another slipknot album which sounds a lot less interesting than the first one i reviewed definetly sounds like they lost some of their creative spark here 5/10 Favourite: Gematria (The Killing Name) Least Favourite: Butcher's Hook

I seriously don’t get the appeal but to each their own I guess. I can confidently say I’ll never listen to this again even though it was good gym hype music for a while there.

I seem to have had all the nu metal in this list in a 30 album section and i have not warmed to it. This is still the better end of it as they at least make an attempt to put some melody in there but its still bot good.

I fail to see the interest in this music because it lacks musicality. It's just a constant force of banging your instrument. A song or 2 yes but a whole album of repetitive sound no. Thankfully they broke it up with a ballad. Snuff.

Not for me sorry

This band scares me… I don’t like the screaming More range than the ramones though I don’t like metal in general, but it is ok for a metal album

25/1001 All Hope Is Gone - Slipknot (2008) The album's name is a good summary of how I felt switching this on at 6am. I don't like much metal at all, I'm not a fan of screaming vocals, and I did not like anything of Slipknot's that I'd heard. 'Gematria' was actually quite sonically interesting but lost me by the time it had finished. 'Sulfur' was the first of small handful of surprises, being probably the best track here. 'Psychosocial' was the only track here I was already aware of, and I'll admit there's a lot to like, but it was just not interesting to me altogether; it's the type of thing I think I would've liked were I much younger. 'Dead Memories' is, admittedly, a great song, which got me a bit excited for the rest. Big mistake! Everything after it, up to 'Snuff', was just boring and forgettable (besides 'Butcher's Hook' which I'll remember for how bad it was, and 'Gehenna' for the hilarious spooky Kang and Kodos sounds). 'Snuff' itself, despite being quite trite, was very enjoyable and had a satisfying crescendo. The outro track was, fittingly, pretty forgettable and boring. The drums throughout sounded programmed and hollow, the vocals in both their writing and performance were hard to take seriously or stomach half of the time, and most of all I was just bored. There's a good EP somewhere hidden among the tracklist here, and I wish I'd listened to that instead. ★★

Lasted 4 songs. Not for me but I get why they were so huge. The drums were good.

I didn’t hate this. Listened to it on a rainy bike ride home from work which felt appropriate. I like the drummer. Guitar work reminds me a bit of early Sabbath. It’s tight and doesn’t wander about the place like Metallica does. Lead vocals are not my thing but I kind of get it? The other singer is pretty good. Reminds me just a little of Bob Mould who I really like. Dead Memories is probably my favorite vocal track. Got about halfway through. It’s a long ass record. Didn’t finish. Won’t go back to it.

I didn't hate this album, but it did get a bit tiring. There's some good moments, and the drums are impressive throughout. In terms of vocals, I prefer the clean vocals by a long way. Corey actually has an OK voice, but obviously the clean moments are pretty rare. High 2.

.execute was a great start and I was wondering if I was about to get treated to a super noisy album. Unfortunately it quickly devolved into hardcore. I won't deny that something deep within me loves this over the top hardcore for the sake of it music. However, I also don't think that's what they were going for. I wasn't sure why everyone was rating this so lowly because I quite enjoyed the first few songs but I'd say it quickly normalised and turned into the sort of pop metal I hate. It's like Imagine Dragons with occasional harsh vocals Missed Potential 2. Could have been a 3

It’s better than I thought it would be. I still didn’t care for it, but I expected something worse judging by the fan base with the masks and such (no offense). The metal parts were a little too edge lord-ish for my tastes. The chill songs were a bit more approachable and even good. My main complaint is to edit down the length of songs. It’s a long album.

I just don’t find these guys particularly interesting!

Most of the songs are all the same, mid-paced with repetitive riffing. The first song was more thrashy, which was nice, and there are some great drumming moments throughout, but it’s not enough to lift this rating.

Bit shit really. Overproduced

poop from a butt

Unbearable for the first tracks, after some time one can understand what mental condition it aligns with

Sometimes sounds cool but mostly just sauceless

I don't enjoy this album at all, but it doesn't shock me that others might. Even though I'll never choose to listen to this again, I usually reserve a 1 for sonething truly appalling or unlistenable -- and this didn't reach that level of negativity.

This morning, I slipped on some gooey dog shit, falling ass-first into it, and then knocking my head on the stairs, chipping a tooth. But that wasn't the low point of my day. Today, I listened to Slipknot's "All Hope Is Gone". There's something entertaining about their attitude and image, but By God, the music is pure dogshit. Never again.

Explosive groove metal and nu-metal built on downtuned guitars, relentless double-kick drums, dense percussion, and furious, screamed vocals assaults with overwhelming force. Listening feels like being trapped inside a constant barrage of noise where the volume never lets up and fatigue sets in quickly. The result is intense and aggressive, but the sheer loudness becomes straining and exhausting.

I don't really fw the gravely metal singing so that brought it down a lot, but the instrumentation was pretty good. Favorite Track: Sulfur - I love the thing in metal where they shift to beautiful vocals for the chorus. The rest of the song was pretty good too.

Not my bag

I think nu-metal is just going to blow ass for me most of the time, this being no exception. Too loud.

3.5/10

Lame.

Some of these are songs

Better than it has a right to be (for me). I generally don’t like metal, & particularly not this type of speed metal. But these songs are well crafted, well executed, and somewhat varied. Still, i don’t like the sound or that if other groups they influenced. A 2.

Not to be too dismissive, but they have one idea and they beat it into your head. Relentlessly. Gehenna departs from that formula and is consequently the only song to that point that I can engage with. Similarly, Snuff tries.

I like their tunefulness, though that drummer gets a bit old, IMO. Psychosocial is pretty great, though.

This music is so far out of my zone I find it difficult to rate or comment on. I don’t need to listen to this before I die

I was expecting this to annoy me but it kind of washed over me. I suspect that’s not what Slipknot were going for.

I actually like the instrumental music. The vocals and costumes kill it for me.

I can appreciate putting a Slipknot album in the mix but not this one.

★★½

Never listened. Expectations: Low - Verdict: Not For Me - I've never understood the love for Slipknot. Gematria opens with a pretty strong riff but quickly begins to feel somewhat generic. Dead Memories is downright bad for me but Vendetta is a better track. I don't mind This Cold Black either. Overall it's alright but no more than that.

Not for me

All hope might be gone for slipknot though. The part that sucks is the singing parts are actually decent when they’re not doing that weird primal voice thing

I entered this one quite skeptical. But I mainly enjoyed it. Especially the guitars and drums. The screaming vocals cost it the three stars for me. worst: "Gehenna" 2,5

Not for me but I respect it

5,5/10 Highlights Sulphur

Sounds like early 90's Sepultura, but less good.

Right, I'm glad that's over. I don't have much to say about it. There were a couple of decent riffs but honestly nothing I'd want to listen to a second time. Moving on.

1.5 stars I thought I was going to hate it. And I definitely disliked it. But it was more melodic than I expected and the drums were pretty cool in parts. I’ll never listen to it again but it satisfied my curiosity.

NEVER expected to see Slipknot on the T1001. This isn't their debut but their 4th album I believe. It's 100mph and has really solid listener counts so it appeals to someone. "Psychosocial" has over 830M listens, wow. "Snuff" is over 450M, "Sulfur" comes in at 140M and "Dead Memories" at 203M. That's solid. I saw them in the early 2000's, free ticket on a triple bill, where they opened. It was overwhelming, I swear there were 8 guys in masks drumming on huge drums just making noise and oozing shock value. It's seared in my memory though, they made an impression. After suffering through this I can summarize that this was repetitive, nearly every song has the same typewriter fast drum beats, terrible vocals and dark lyrics. "Psychosocial" has a hook mixed in between the yelling main vocal, it still sucks, I tapped out after 3 mins. "Butcher's Hook" was a song Mom would love...wow, if this is your jam you have issues. "Snuff" was the 'love song' on this album I guess, it's the only one without machine gun drums, it's formulaic and still sucks. The title track is rapid fire garbage. "Child Of Burning Time" was the only song with any semblance of a true rock and roll song. I didn't enjoy any of this. I don't know what value this album has in the musical universe or why it's a 'must hear' record, I just wanted it to end. 2 stars because someone likes it.

I’ve never cared for Slipknot; way too hard for my taste. This one wasn’t horrible, but by track three, I got the idea.

Ehhhhhhhhh. Not my type of metal? Feels like their songs just run together.

Meh. Pretty generic melodic/poppy metal. No idea why this is on the 1001 albums list.

Just not my thing. Get rid of the lead vocalist/screamer and you have something. Gehanna and Snuff were the only two songs worth listening to, rest is nonsensical screaming.

An odd mix of over aggressive drumming and vocals and softer songs that don’t seem to fit.

First time I really wanted the looong, dragging album to be over asap. I just hated the grunting and ultra fast lick drums. But then more towards the end there were actually some songs that did nit have those and actually soonded really good.

2- Stars (4/15)

it kinda feels like this album doesn't really know what it wants to be. at times it's very angry and spooky, sometimes it goes from very heavy to an almost pop-ish sound, then it gets quite political, and then sometimes it's like i'm listening to a boy band trying to make metal music. it's just a little all over the place at times. for the most part it's pretty cohesive, quite groovy in a way, very rhythmic. drums and guitars go pretty hard in this album, i like that. what i did not like is that the vocals at times felt a little too abrasive and the lyrics for the most part are pretty superficial and impactless. as far as metal music goes, this is an okay album. not something i'd pick up to listen again though.

Most "songs" simply sound like yelling to noise. The exception is Snuff. That is the only song of the 15 I appreciated.

metalvärldens good charlotte.

Not as bad as I thought it would be but probably won’t be listening to again. 2.5 stars

Don't say that!

Vocals are noisy, abrasive, and a little goofy. Instrumentals are not that interesting and are too drum focused. They also lack clarity during heavier sections.

Slipknot were never my thing even as a metal loving teenager, but I can appreciate the abilities of Joey Jordison and Corey Taylor, amongst others. I had never heard anything off this album before (I was more familiar with the Wait and Bleed era), so it was interesting to hear a ballad like Snuff.

this album made me sad, but Mark likes it and thinks it quote en quote "rocks"

Not my fav, but I could appreciate the care, skill and precision of the intense playing.

Great drumming. The rest is mainly noise. There are some good bits, where it slows down for breath, but the best use for this album is to play in the car and let your passengers think you're a little bit whoa, little bit whey.

Like they are very good at what they do but it’s now what I want to listen too - drums are insane - album is wayyyy too long also over an hour is too much

An album that makes you appreciate the ads between the songs

Slipknot have to be at their absolute BEST for me to enjoy them and this was just quite dull

Just noise. Don't want to go all the way through this

I didn’t loathe it as much as I expected to

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhh

I am pretty far away from Slipknot's intended audience, not quite Catholic Grandma far away but pretty close. I've mostly been interested in extreme metal bands, but every now and then I'll find a more melodic metal band that I enjoy. Unfortunately with Slipknot, even the songs people will say I should like don't really do anything for me. When someone recommended I listen to Psychosocial, I find myself underwhelmed. It very much feels like a CEO's idea of what "edgy" metal should be. All Hope Is Gone fails to work as an album, maybe could've been a decent EP if they'd cut the filler. Each song draaags, overstaying their welcome long enough for you to notice after tuning it out. This is especially true of the track run from Vendetta to Wherein Lies Continue, which literally felt an hour long. On the better tracks there's definitely some redemption, Snuff and Dead Memories being pretty well thought-out. The majority of the record is just so tame, regardless of what their personas want you to think. I'll defend some Slipknot, even if it's not my cup of tea, but I really have nothing positive to say about All Hope Is Gone.

When I was in high school, all the guys who liked Slipknot happened to be those kids who, in second grade, pulled their pants all the way down to their ankles to pee. I’d never listened to Slipknot on that association alone. I’m not saying I missed out on much, but listening now, it just sounds to me like general nu metal, indistinguishable from Disturbed or Korn. When I first saw that this was my album of the day, I immediately felt its inclusion discredited this list. But, it actually wasn’t a bad soundtrack for trudging through the snow with my dog, I’ll admit. I felt vaguely Scandinavian, even though Slipknot emerged from the mid-American corn fields. My dog transformed from a cute cuddly husky to a viscous bloodthirsty wolf. My heartbeat accelerated to match the mechanical drum rhythm assaults. The sun became a strobe light. I’ll admit I nodded my head a bit in time. I understand Slipknot was in the culture at one point in time, therefore, sure. I’ll give it a pass.

When it comes to Metal, my tastes generally require a melodic vocal counterweight to balance out the sonic onslaught. I’ve always struggled with the harsher delivery favoured by Corey Taylor and similar vocalists; for me, it often impairs the enjoyment of the instrumentation. While I respect this as a deliberate stylistic choice, it isn't one I personally enjoy, which is why I’ve remained largely unfamiliar with Slipknot’s catalogue. However, listening to "All Hope Is Gone", I discovered a compelling duality. Occasionally, like a shaft of sunlight breaking through a thunderstorm, Taylor’s "clean" singing voice emerges, and it’s genuinely great. Tracks like "Dead Memories," "Gehenna," and "Snuff" are standout examples. Even on "Vendetta," where Taylor retains a gritty rasp, he keeps the aggression enough in check for me to truly connect with the song. I realize this perspective likely puts me at odds with the "hardcore" Slipknot fanbase. While I admire the band’s craft, this is the first time I have ever managed to finish one of their albums in its entirety. Ultimately, "All Hope Is Gone" was a mixed and difficult experience to rate. I can appreciate why fans love it, but for my personal palate, it’s a two-star experience that just narrowly misses the three-star mark. 1 ".execute." (3/5) 2 "Gematria (The Killing Name)" (1/5) 3 "Sulfur" (2/5) 4 "Psychosocial" (2/5) 5 "Dead Memories" (3/5) 6 "Vendetta" (4/5) 7 "Butcher's Hook" (2/5) 8 "Gehenna" (3/5) 9 "This Cold Black" (2/5) 10 "Wherein Lies Continue" (2/5) 11 "Snuff" (3/5) 12 "All Hope Is Gone" (2/5) Total - 29 Average - 2.42 200/1001 112/200 albums reviewed were new to me.

i cannot describe how visceral the feeling of jarring disconnection was in my bones when when the vocalist started. just as i was enjoying the guitar and getting into the feel of the rhythm of the drums, here comes this rabid barking dog ruining the whole thing. no exaggeration i reflexively recoiled in disgust. i might as well have just cracked my window open and waited for my neighbor's dog to start howling once it hears a siren. the vocals on every track are *rough*. i don't know if it's partially based on how edgy the content is or if i just really hate this particular guy's voice, but wow. it was agonizing. metal songs always love to be like 20% too long too so that didn't help either.

I think I can listen to about 1 song that sounds like this until I lose my ability to actually comprehend anything. Uh, the drums sound good? I kinda like psychosocial despite really not liking the... Amount of edgy singing going on in some of these other songs. It's not AS bad as I expected it to be? The only song I didn't think "jesus this is going on a bit long" was the opening track which isn't a great sign. Don't listen to my opinion on this kind of music, if you like it good for you! Remember to check in with a therapist now and again if you can, and remember to talk to a friend if you need help.

The drumming on this album was absolutely insane. It was nonstop on every track. Other than that, I’m not really sure what I just listened to. I’ve never been able to truly appreciate Death Metal so I’ll be gentle on the scorecard based on being in awe of the drummer.

I woke up this morning to 8 inches of snow and this album. This might be the only time that a Slipknot album would be useful. I strapped on my boots and my AirPods and headed out. Let’s just say that that snow did not get shoveled… It got annihilated. While there are some interesting moments on this very long offering, overall I find this kind of music to be foolish. I feel like it has to be tongue in cheek even though I’m not sure that it is. I know nothing about the musicians, but I imagine that these are the kinds of people that would shop at Spirit of Halloween all year long. Yes, they can play their instruments, but they make poor choices as musicians. Being technically good and musically gifted are two very different things. As I’ve said before, I’ll never ‘appreciate’ or give extra credit to the musicianship in a metal band like this because, as musicians, you choose how to deliver your music. The simple fact that your choice of style is screaming and growling makes me question your overall artistic integrity. A better musician makes a better choice. Next snowstorm, I’ll stick to a podcast.

It's more listenable than I thought it'd be. Some of the tracks lyrically would be embarrassing for a teenager to write.

Album 994 of 1089 All Hope Is Gone - Slipknot (2008) Rating : 2.5 / 5 I’m sure for those actively seeking out this genre, this album hits exactly where it’s supposed to. For me, though, the constant screaming just doesn’t work as “music.” I get the intent, and I understand the appeal, but it does nothing for my ears. At times, it honestly brought to mind Sam Kinison more than anything musical - lots of intensity, lots of volume, but not much I could connect with on a musical level. I was also a bit surprised to see this was a 2008 release. The sound and approach feel more like something that would have peaked a couple of decades earlier. That said, there’s no denying that the band is fully committed to what they do. The performances are tight, the production is heavy, and they clearly execute their vision exactly as intended.

I marvel at the kickdrum speed, the playing is airtight, and this one is a little better than the last album of theirs we reviewed. But I do not think nu metal is a genre worthy of being feted. Nor that Slipknot has any business being on this list once, much less twice. Seriously, WTF?

Unbelievably edgy, but loses all impact when you see through the shtick.

If they cut out the growling and focused on the material that more harmonious, it would have been a better album.

I have listened to every album I have gotten so far. This tested me. Why it’s on the list I will never know. These some angry mother fuckers.

For this genre, I can accept it better than other albums. They somehow make the noise smooth enough to stand it longer. And at least as far as I listened to the lyrics, it's not demonic texts all the time.

Snuff is good. Love Corey Taylor singing not screaming. The rest is too much of that for me. Riffs are good.

2 - Demasiado estridente para mi gusto

Somewhere in a mid-sized city, a 42 year old woman spent the day driving around to her office job, grabbing a cute lunch at her favorite soup boutique, going to yoga, and doing some holiday shopping, all to the soundtrack of "All Hope Is Gone" by Slipknot.

I thought Snuff was good, otherwise, not my bag.

No private session used for Spotify though it did take me a while to listen to this album because I knew I would have to be in right mind set. I was surprised by the dichotomy of this album the thrash/death metal with cookie monster voice and then they put stuff on like "Snuff". But its mostly music I am just not angry enough to listen to, I didn't mind it, but don't see me putting it on ever again.

this rock is too heavy for me

Pretty lame. Full of emo clichés.

2.4 2x not horrible, but i was expecting better

Bombastic, cliché-ridden. I don’t need to hear any of this—even “Snuff,” which was, oh, mildly tolerable—ever again.

The popular ones are ok, but the rest of it just too much. Calm the fuck down and have a snickers or something

Previously rated: #140 - Slipknot (2/5) ************************ Album #963 On the positive side, there are some good guitar riffs, and when I’m not being screamed at, which is rare, the other vocals are Ok. But I can’t get over how bad I feel when listening to this. I don’t need these guys yelling at me for an hour about how awful the world is (or was 17 years ago). I’m 51 years old. I’m way over that. Let me put on some Little Richard to cleanse the palate now.

I love the Midwest and I love my parents

I am not overly familiar with Slipknot beyond a few songs and knowledge of their image. It sounds to me like this is a push to be a more mainstream Hard Rock sound. Or what I often think of as "buttrock" Just generic heavy riffs, non-aggressive agrressive vocals, you know similar sounds to just about anything playing right now and your city's only true Rock n Roll station. Nothing noteworthy for me.

Why is this on here? Was counting the seconds until this was over. The drums are pretty wild though. And 3 of the last 5 songs weren’t awful. Basically when they decide not to just scream at me, the music was palatable. Still a giant 2 though.

I'd give this 1.5 stars. It is extremely derivative and just a more modern version of "butt rock." However, what they are imitating is at times pretty good, and the talent of the musicians definitely shows - just not the level of the writing or the quality of the actual whole.

Slip-not for me. Liked the guitars, the drums when he wasn't overplaying, and the occasional "Dave Grohl vocals."

Oh boy. Hoping the album title isn’t forecasting my opinion.

Not my genre.

I'm actually glad to have listened to this but I do not like this style of scream metal rock. The good: Slipknot are really good musicians and there's a lot of creative musical talent in the album. Good debut album that set the tone of the band. Some singing with the screaming and thrashing. The bad: I just don't like much screaming music... it's either too hard (Slipnot) or too soft (whiny pop screamo). Glad I'm through it and onto the next one.

You're really going to put All Hope Is Gone instead of Iowa and Vol. 3? The writer is a full blown idiot.

De bästa låtarna riktigt bra, men blir tröttsamt i längden. Och långt är det.

Its ok

I know nothing about the genre, but it was surprisingly accessible and the drumming impressive. Not something I would revisit, but I don't hate it.

Not as heavy as expected. With nine members, the sound should be bigger. The vocals don't always work. They are not as crazy and hard as once believed.....but the drummer rocks and there are a few interesting musical moments throughout. Explain to me, Robert Dimery, why Slipknot has two entries and Tool has zero.

I maintain that good metal is always written by nerds, and you can tell. I don’t think these guys are nerdy enough

This was a hard listen for me. I didn't at all like the first 13 tracks except for the drumming and more melodic parts. The last two, I liked way more, so it deserves a 2 in my books. Not a re-listen for me.

This isn’t for me, but I will say I’m happy to enjoy some music with some actual emotion and energy. The drummer is on fucking fire.

It was ok nothing stood out really

there's two bangers and a bunch a bullshit

Struggled to get into it - not awful, but definitely wouldn’t return to this

Not my thing. The band presents itself like horror film, which is not my genre at all. If I try to ignore the visuals, the music itself is thrash metal and they are capable with their instruments (that drummer is absurdly fast). But the vocals are again half growls, and the tunes are not really catchy. Slipknot reminds me a bit of Limp Bizkit, but the latter is quite a bit better.

I shall now think and talk about Slipknot more than a (nearly) 50 year old should. Honestly, they seem like good musicians (especially the dummer), but my main issue is that they feel like two bands staple-gunmed together: A growly speed-metal band and a sad sack post-grunge band. And even when they share a song they never really mesh. Still, if my kids went through an overly angst period, I'd probably prefer them listen to this than a misanthropic hack like Fred Durst.

Didn't know pop metal was a genre. Some songs even gave a bit of a NIN feel - until the guy who insists on singing like someone has put a vice on his nuts and dragged them across a room starts growling at top volume.

Double kick pedal is pretty intense. I'll crank this up on the way to hockey tonight. Hopefully I don't get into a fight. When is a good time to play Slipknot?

I didn’t HATE it like I thought I would

I enjoyed some of the guitar work and some of the drum fills.

Slipknot is not a band I expected to show up on this list, but getting All Hope Is Gone as today's assignment was something of a welcome surprise. Despite the mixed things I've heard about their music and my lack of desire to dig deeper (based on what I HAVE heard from them), it's obvious they have a massive, enthusiastic fanbase and this was a good excuse to see what all the fuss is about. Unfortunately, I don't think AHIG is a very good LP. It's an album that is trying to be edgy, but often comes across quite dull. It's an album that is constantly trying to comment on modern religion/society/relationships, but doesn't have anything compelling to say. It's an album that tries to be accessible, but isn't catchy enough to stick with you. It's an album that is practically drowning in musical proficiency, but doesn't do anything interesting with that talent. Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but I am struggling to understand how anyone (outside of the most dedicated metal fans) felt like this LP was essential listening material. Some of the more melodic passages of the project (choruses, guitar solos, etc.) didn't even feel like they made musical sense when listened to in context. Like, was getting two Slipknot albums really necessarily when a band like Dream Theater doesn't even get one? The nicest thing I can say about All Hope Is Gone is that I didn't actively hate it while listening to it – Corey Taylor's yell-singing gets a bit grating by the end of the album, but the project as a whole generally didn't do anything risky or irritating enough to completely put me off. Slipknot will avoid a one star rating from me for now, but this is easily the worst album I've had to listen to for this challenge so far. I'll still give their self-titled LP a shot when the Generator gives it to me (assuming in good faith that they did SOMETHING to hook people in the '90s, beyond the mask gimmick), but I'm definitely less excited to do so at this point. Highlights: Psychosocial, Snuff

A couple of good songs but overall just not my style of metal.

i do not need this in my life ill stick to deftones. that being said its good metal but i am rarely in a metal mood so id ratger listen to metal i already know is good.

76/1001 Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ Slipknot have always been a band I can manage in small doses and so a record at almost and hour was going to be a challenge. That being said, I did enjoy the quieter moments on this and toleratedthe more hardcore stuff, which probably is controversial in saying...

.execute. 2.8 Gematria (The Killing Name) 2.4 Sulfur 2.7 Psychosocial 2.6 Dead Memories 2.8 Vendetta 2.3 Butcher's Hook 2.3 Gehenna 2.4 This Cold Black 2 Wherein Lies Continue 2.2 Snuff 2.7 All Hope Is Gone 2 Score: 2.433333333

surprisingly a little more melodic then I would have thought, not my thing at all though

My ears are literally bleeding after listening to the first two tracks Quite liked Dead Memories Snuff so it's not all bad

Inte exakt min stil. Några bra låtar som psychosocial och germatria

This is an okay album. I thought the track Snuff was very pleasant, but nothing about the rest of the album struck me as particularly noteworthy.

Screamy metal is probably my least favorite genre, but this is slightly better than some of the others

Made it half way then had to stop. Big fan of SoaD and RAtM. But not a full album of this

Well, it's metal. I need to address it somehow... Track 3 is very poppy and nice. 2, more of a frightening one. 4. Feels a bit like a rock some with metal esthetics. It's actually very nice and rhymicly pleasing. 5. You can feel 2008 in this one. Not sure if in a good way. It's all very epic, but not touching. 6. Heavy again. Drums going crazy. Cool song. 7 with some different vocals, but less of a good song. 8 is better. A bit of a 90's grunge throwback. 9 very aggressive. Does it hurt him to sing like that? Nice riff anyway. 10.coolest song on the album so far. Super nice riffs and good vocals and hooks Snuff is actually very touching. A cheesy rock ballad, but very effective. 2008 all the way. 12. All power towards the end. Great guitars. Well, I know metal is not my thing, and this is definitely not one of the places to begin, but considering all that I think it's fine. 2.4

Hardcore and insatiable.

I like when they sing… when they scream I don’t like it at all… so I liked it more than I thought I would but… still not for me.

Everything I don't like about metal music

Pretty boring. Listened to about half.

Ok 2/5

I just don't like Slipknot

Slowly backs away while avoiding direct eye contact ...

its fine

More music, less screaming and growling please.

Miss me with that shiz* fam *Means sh*t

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. I had not listened to this one all the way through. My main Slipknot album is the one prior to this one. The end of this has Vermillion, Pt 2 which is a continuation from the previous album. It’s good but not quite as good as the original. The remainder of the album sounds like a Slipknot album. It has a lot of plays on YouTube so it must be popular.

Never understood the appeal of Slipknot. Technically proficient, but just felt like another cookie-cutter hard rock band.

No thanks

reminded me of MoS in a way, but not my genre.

And to think that about 9 to 10 years ago I used to love Slipknot... I even have the Deluxe version of this album on CD! Coming back to this, I found that it is a very uninspiring album. The only songs with value are the singles, and even them don't offer any true memorable experience in my opinion. The rest are or very messy or inconsistent. Also, the solos are awful. They feel like moments to show off how technical they can be playing without adding any substance to the songs. I'll give it 2 stars because I don't think it was boring or painful enough to give it 1 star.

Rip cuz like I could see a world in which I enjoy this cuz they’re clearly talented musicians and this music isn’t uninteresting… but it’s just knot for me. Drummer rips.

Not my thing, did not finish.

loud and chaotic. Knot my bag. (see what I did there? Huh? )

Ugh... I'll give it a try. Mum I want to listen to Metallica... we have Metallica at home. I really really hate scream singing. Never did, probably never will. Talented fucking drummer though!

Technically proficient with 2000s era production and verbose but predictable lyrics. Loses a point because it reminded me of high school. Gains a point because I listened to this at my dumb dead end job in dumb dead end Iowa.

It’s like Evanesence plus screaming and chanting. Not what I expected. But I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would.

I blame garbage like this for keeping me away from metal in my formative years. Assholes! Thisnis like their wort album too. WtF is this list

Some good songs but way too long.

Not as bad as I was expecting it to be but I also realized I confuse Slipknot and GWAR a lot

Slipknot is ok but really just too much noise for me at this point. Singer has a good voice and some of the slower songs actually play well, but most of the album I could do without.

Quite a bit was fine. Quite a bit was an audio assault. The last track was probably best.

Not for me unfortunately, will give a 2 as there are some good heavy riffs

Not my style at all

Not great.

Very intense throughout. Some of it loud, angry, negative, brutal. Other times introspective, sensitive, beautiful. I could listen to this again to find more. But, mostly, it’s too dark for me.

I waffled a lot on this one. It's not exactly my style by I do like some punk and hardcore. There's some alright stuff on this album. A lot of it just runs together. So I was going to give it 3 stars but deducting one point for how silly the masks are. And if you can't acknowledge that then I'm sorry but there's no helping you.

Getting this between a Gorillaz album and Blood On The Tracks is… yeah. I was initially unfairly hard on this, impulsively giving it my first 1-star rating, but it’s better than that. Would be a 3 if it was less focused on clean vocals, honestly. It’s not bad.

Not as good as the self titled album for me. The drumming is still the highlight. It’s a little too long. My favorite songs were Sulfur and Psychosocial.

Oh boy--as expected Slipknot is......controversial with the reviewers of this list. Metal/hard rock of this type is a "love it or hate it" kind of thing and I'm usually in the "love it" side. That said, Slipknot tries too hard sometimes and it shows. Psychosocial is legit good, though. The guitar riff, while very simple, carries the song. The clean vocals are quite good, too.

Are those supposed to be zombies? I did not like "Gematria." I liked the beginning but the rest of the song was terrible. The singing is just strangled yelling, it does not match the music. The only good part was the guitar solos. The start of "Phsychosocial" was good with the guitar and drums. I liked the second singing voice that didn't sound strangled. "Snuff" was much better. I liked the singing and guitar, they were really good. This song didn't really fit the same vibe as the rest of the album though. I do not recommend this album, except for "Snuff".

Had major reservations about listening to this. My previous experience of listening to Metallica didn't go well. In short, not a big fan of shouty rock. And the first track did not allay my fears! Although tucked away amongst the inevitable guttural shouting were some more melodic tracks that took the edge of things. To summarise, not as bad as anticipated but overall not a pleasurable listening experience.

00'er metal, svært at skelne, et par (relativt) roligere numre

Opeth etc >>>>>>>

I came into this album with pretty low expectations and was pleasantly surprised that a couple of the songs were decent and enjoyable to listen to. Good musicianship and some head bobbing moments for sure. That said, for the time it came out, I think it wasn't really inventive, lyrics were super corny and trying to be edgy, songs were repetitive, and the ballads and parts of songs that got balladesque sucked. If it came on at a shitty surburban bar while I was 9 beers deep on a Wednesday night I would definitely enjoy a couple of songs. But inevitably some guy chain smoking would start blabbing to me how he saw them 20 times in one year and nobody makes good music like this anymore before he inevitably says something super racist and I have to awkwardly step away.

This is not my taste in metal. It’s getting 2 stars because there were a couple of songs that I didn’t hate. “This Cold Black” was alright

I find the best tracks are those with "normal" singing. Parts of the choruses of Sulfur and Psychosocial immediately stood out to me, like "Hang on, Slipknot momentarily sounded good. What's the deal?" It's a shame they branded themselves as heavy metal, because a lighter kind of rock-metal would've been almost objectively better-sounding for the band. This record, particularly in the latter half, tends to alternate between fairly good tracks like Snuff and Vermilion and significantly worse "noise" tracks such as Child of Burnin Time, This Cold Black, and Butcher's Hook. It's much worse than the tried-and-true formula of grouping all the good tracks together on one side and all the silly filler on the other. The guitar sound is extremely distorted and it's clear these guys are loving every moment of it. But is it musically interesting? Well... not really. Given the oversaturation of the heavy metal genre, particularly by teenage garage bands, Slipknot fades into the noisy calamity, surrounded by hundreds of bands with the exact same sound. The only time when they sound even slightly unique or interesting is in more acoustic or melodic tracks – but even then Slipknot is just imitating the sound of better, more musically complex bands like Nirvana or AIC. The rest of the time, it's that demonic vocal that's pretty hard to take seriously. 2/5 Key tracks: Sulfur, Psychosocial, Dead Memories

I've never actually listened to Slipknot. They're decent. I was not expecting the singer-guy - I thought it was all metal screaming.

Not great!

They can certainly play their instruments fast and shout a lot. The slower tracks were better I thought but overall sounded like a lot of other American guitar/drum bands. It was ok at best for me.

I truly cannot believe that there are (at least) TWO Slipknot albums on this list. I was shocked and aghast to receive this after feeling like I already got through the one Slipknot representative on this list. But here we are. This was predictably too long and too much, but still it's obvious this is a talented band.

Do we need multiple Slipknot?

Before: NOT SLIPKNOT. Noooo way this thing is an hour and 12 minutes. I'll go into it with an open mind. Before I Forget and Vermillion are bangers, Slipknot has it in them I swear. Standout tracks: Psychosocial When All Hope Is Gone Vermilion, Pt. 2 Weakest tracks: Sulfur This Cold Black During/after: OMG the first track was jarring. Just loud and noisy but not in a fun way. The lyrics on Gematria are ridiculous lol. I love some good anti-government rock but it just doesn't land here. It's like they want to be System of a Down but without the lyrical talent. "I will go down in history and not down in flames, meningitis, I will survive this, dry sockets and a schizophrenic crisis" PLEASEEE be for real. Psychosocial isn't bad! I'm not anti screaming but I think that the singer of this band has a good, almost pop-punky voice that I like so I appreciated the singing on this track amidst the screaming. I have similar feelings about Dead Memories. It seemed like we were back of the bullshit once we got to Vendetta (and we were for the most part) but I liked the bridge a lot here! The ending of Butcher's Hook was a pleasant surprise too. I'm finding that there are bits and pieces I like from a lot of these tracks but not usually the whole thing. This Cold Black was a rough listen, easily one of my least favorites on this track. The vocals are extremely guttural here in a way that really just turns me off. I usually love a good guitar solo too, and although the guitarist in this song is obviously very talented, it just wasn't doing much for me. Wherein Lies Continue is also complete ass for similar reasons. Snuff was a nice, slower break from the heaviness of the other tracks. I don't mind heavy, loud music at all; punk is my favorite genre, but it felt like a breather. It was especially needed considering the length of this record. I was into the guitar on this track a lot. However, I would have liked it significantly more if it weren't so, dare I say.... cringe??? I was just kind of grimacing listening. All Hope Is Gone is one that I liked more as well. Maybe Snuff was a palate cleanser, but it was definitely one of the better tracks. It sounded less nu metal and more prog, emo metal which I like. It's a solid choice for a title track. Vermillion Pt. 2 is probably my favorite from this record, which isn't a surprise because I really like Vermillion. 'Til We Die wasn't my favorite song but definitely not the worst on this record. It almost sounded like when you would ad lib song lyrics and melodies as a kid but it was recorded in a studio. Historically, I'm not a huge metal fan. The last 6ish months I've really been dipping my toes into metal and finding more that I like, but I still cannot stand nu metal. I would go so far as to say nu metal is one of my top three most hated genres. With that being said, the bar was in the pits of hell going into this record, so there were parts that felt like a pleasant surprise (the key word here is "parts"). The sound of the music and sound itself was mid with some pretty good sections as well as awful sections, I just couldn't get past the lyrics. They're so BAD. Like, 14 year old boy with those narrow rectangular glasses with the thin wire frames trying to be edgy. You know the ones. Overall, I thought the second half of the album was significantly better than the first half, and there was even a song or two I might come back to every now and then, but man that first half and those lyrics are pain. Also, this thing had no business being over an hour a long. 2/5.

Too heavy for me but can see why someone would enjoy it.

not as bad as I expected

It's the vocals that I can't get behind. They're marginally better than the previous Slipknot album we had, but there's still too much growling for me. Some of the instrumentals are fine.

To me slipknot has always been "metal for the mainstream". I remember them being played on music channels like Kerrang! at the time alongside Nickleback, which says it all. Listening as objectively as I could manage, I didn't hate it. There were some good moments and tight musicianship although I didn't enjoy the vocals at all. I still think it sounds contrived and too refined, maybe too commercial? I just can't get the image of those uniforms and silly masks out of my head.

Didn’t vibe with this one the same way as the last slipknot album. 4/10

Maybe it’s because I was in a terrible mood yesterday at work, but I liked this more than I expected. I’m still not a fam of the vocalist, but the instrumental pieces were at least engaging and fit my frustrations well. 2 stars, I don’t think I can quite round up to 3 because I seriously doubt I’ll be revisiting this one.

This was honestly better than I expected. I remembered slipknot being unlistenable and a bit of a novelty. I guess i need to be in a certain frame of mind for this. Got through 6 songs before being told to turn it off. They all sounded very similar to each other. Cool drums

I’ve flip flopped on slipknot since they first appeared. This is a bit formulaic but it’ll be interesting to hear other people’s opinions who are less familiar with them

Sometimes I like to listen to sad music but this is a flavor of angry-sad that I don't understand. If it makes some people happy, that's great.

Probably would have liked this when I was 12.

Metal like this is not my thing outside of a gym.

There is something about these guys that I just don’t like. I hear some cool riffs, some heavy parts but nothing really grabs me. Maybe it’s the marketing - maybe it’s maybelline.

Måske engang i fremtiden :)

Never paid any attention to Slipknot before this. I knew they had a drummer + a percussionist so that’s what I zeroed in on, and you know what? It was pretty cool. A slightly bizarro world 14 year old me probably would have loved these guys. Too late now though.

Actually... There are parts I actually liked... Two thing that keep this from rising above 2.... One is the growling vocals which I can take in small doses, but as the main focus it becomes a massive hindrance. But when he sings in his normal voice I actually really dig it. The other is the almost comical use of the double kick... Honestly the trash influenced guitar style I really like makes me want to like this more... Two songs I do legitimately like "Dead Memories" and "Snuff" if more of the album was like that I coukd even go as high as 3½. But most of it is the other shit.

Like the playing well enough, even if it is not my prefered genre. Hate the vocals 2.5 stars

2008. Heavy Metal. Nu Metal. 6/10 Sulfur. / Psychosocial / Butcher's Hook / Gehenna / All Hope Is Gone / Vermilion / 'Til We Die

voltei a ter 12 anos ouvindo isso

I’ve not really kept up with Slipknot’s music since their first few albums, but these guys need to hang up their masks. There’s nothing of note here, it’s just an overly long album of bland melodic rock with the occasional pinched harmonic. Gone is any of the bite found in their first couple of albums. I have a feeling metal as a genre is going to be poorly represented in this list, and it’s a shame because there’s so many more interesting metal albums out there than this weak shit.

Not for me.

Production was good on some songs and technical skill was there. Felt like it called back to some early metal, but didn’t love it all the way through, and I enjoy heavier things. Not bad not good.

I did not expect Slipknot on this list. Unclean vocals are good but in metal I generally prefer a mix of clean and unclean vocals, and I think they take a while to get to any clean vocals. Okay sulfur rocks. By vendetta, though, I'm just a little bored. Maybe its just my power metal fan coming out, but I thought the album could do with more range. Like, transgressive for the sake of transgressive only gets you so far. I love good metal, but they're just a little corny. And I typically like corny in metal. I'm a power metal fan who likes songs about Blade Runner. But something about this doesn't do it for me. It's much harder for me to articulate what I like in metal and what I don't like but this isn't it. Pass some Judas Priest or Sabbath, please.

I think angsty teenage torpedo would’ve loved this album. 31yo torpedo just get stressed out listening to this. Great production quality & percussion though.

all hope is indeed gone

It sure is! What a happy go lucky feeling one gets from this album! Need to find some aspirin.

I was sick on Sunday and y'all really wanted me to listen to a 72 minute Slipknot album from 2008? THE AUDACITY.

February 5, 2025 Keeping 2000s nostalgia alive 3 albums in a row… okay, besides “Before I Forget” (shout out Guitar Hero III), Slipknot isn’t exactly the band I get nostalgia for First off, this album has a pretty strong start, leading off with "Gematria", "Sulfur" and "Psychosocial". Later on, I also didn't mind tracks like "Gehenna" and the grand finale of the title track. But like the other Slipknot I've heard (1999 self-titled), a relatively concise 60 minutes wears me down and ends up feeling quite a bit longer. "Slipknot still sound like being trapped in a small room with nine angry bulldozers", indeed (taken from the book before they scrubbed All Hope Is Gone from future editions) The more melodic elements are probably why this my favourite of the two albums, despite probably pissing off long-time fans. Between getting them on this list, and associating them with edgy brats in my middle school, I fear Slipknot has made me *less* curious about their genre of music, going against almost any other artist on this list. Especially because it looks like this is the only metal album rep in the 21st century portion of this list! That's wild. Not that I don't have ideas of where to look for a new(nu) metal band that I can really enjoy; among those I haven't yet explored are Agalloch, Gojira, Rammstein, Mastodon... Meshuggah if I'm feeling especially brave. I mean, if the internet says they're good, right? Edit: since my feathers were still ruffled from an hour of Slipknot, I put on some Nightwish. I correctly predicted it to be more my speed
