Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Nice, good background
This was odd, and at first, kind of annoying; to its credit, though, can’t really say it’s generic or entirely boring. It didn’t appeal to me much, but it’s hard to decide on a rating - I think an experimental sound typically warrants a little boost. Persian Love 2.5?
Fun to listen to. Pallete cleansing. Loaded with surprises and overflowing with ideas but in a digestible way.
Byrjaði mjög vel. Ætlaði að gefa plötunni fimm stjörnur. Svo varð þetta aðeins of flókið fyrir mig.
I’m sure this was very influential, but the Venn diagram of avant-garde and too clever by half is nearly a circle, and this album is in there somewhere. Some of it isn’t that bad and some of it is just random seeming combinations of sounds, but overall inoffensive.
I really appreciated how weird and experimental this one was but I have to admit there is a lot better music in this vein. I know this was in 79 and this is a Can dude so that definitely helps with my opinion but I don't think I'd ever come back to this record. Particularly because if I'm in the mood for something like this, I'd go to a more polished krautrock/psych record. I really appreciate that this was made though because I want artists to feel like they can be experimental like this. I'm sure this influenced a lot of the music I listen to today as well. I'm stoked this got chosen for the list.
This is quirky, and weird, and kind of delightful in places, but it's not something I would come back to and actively listen to. It's musically interesting, and obviously quite experimental, but there's a lightness of touch and it's kind of fun with it.
Was wondering what the hell this was and then saw he was in the band Can and then it made sense.
I’m sure I had something pithy to say on Friday when I listened. But now it’s Monday and I don’t recall a thing about it so… shows how exciting that was.
This is ok. Did not wow me but I liked it
Carinha doidinho
Interesting. The producers had fun pressing buttons
I should start reading the album summaries or the Wikipedia articles, as I didn't know this man was part of the band 'Can', which makes a little more sense to add him to the list. Without the context, it would feel very random to add him. It stills feels that it comes from nowhere, but not as much. Now into the album: This record is so weird. In the Wikipedia it is described as Art Rock and 'an early experimenation in sampling', and I do agree. It is undeniable that a lot of creativity was put into these four songs, and it makes them as very interesting listening, sounding like anything I've heard before. Did I like it? Well, yes! But not that much... Apart from its creative and interesting aspects, one of my favourites traits of the project is how clear it sounds. It was produced wonderfully. In addition, I did also appreciate its groovyness, specially in the last track with its weird rythms. However, I do believe the songs don't really reach any high or emotion worth coming back. In summary, an interesting experience, but I don't see myself returning to it.
Probably wouldn’t listen to again but it was pretty cool actually
What a Can co-founder sounds like with a synth, a stack of VHS tapes, and no curfew! Holger Czukay — bassist, sonic tinkerer, and founding member of Can — spent months channel-surfing and taping whatever caught his ear. The result is Movies: a collage of layered synths, rubbery basslines, African drums, and media snippets woven into something equal parts funky, surreal, and strangely cinematic. It’s more “art installation” than “needle-drop party starter” — I’m not sure how often I’d spin it if I owned it on vinyl, but as a first listen it’s fascinating. You can hear the restless curiosity, the playfulness, the thrill of finding unexpected beauty in the static between stations. Verdict: Excellent (as an experience) For fans of: Can, Brian Eno, Talking Heads, crate-digging for TV soundbites you don’t yet understand.
really interesting experience. some songs dragged on for far too long but overall i really enjoyed it! 3.5/5
What they soundtracked German skin flicks to in the 70s.
Udda men välkommen ny bekantskap
Interesting. Madlad german/polish? experimental shit. Respeck more than enjoy. But some of it grooves.
Very interesting album. Elements of Arabic music. Many cool bits of found sound. Long drawn out groovy tracks but always several other things going on within the song. Chill but keeps you on your toes.
Genio o cagata? Boh
weird but interesting. Enjoyed listening to it Standout song: Oh Lord, give us more money
Solid three. I kinda got into it.
Not really a fan of the 15 minute mega-songs. Feels like it pigeonholes the tunes into “background music”. That being said, it was an enjoyable listen otherwise. I like this guy’s mustache.
Definitely Krautrock as it reminds me of what my brother listens to.
Interesting but didn’t totally love it.
Very good album in the year context. Probably ground braking sampling at the time but songs are eternal I feel it was just one huge song that the lable cut into pieces for commercial purposes. Probably influenced a few of the post punk, pop, indie rock bands in the early 80s Very unique and progressive. My only real critique is the length of the songs which I dont have the time frame to listen to them as a whole in one sitting
Properly unusual album which was a nice surprise! Would listen to “Cool in the Pool” again but the 12 minute songs were less repeat-listenable.
A fine experimental record with plenty more upside than down, but the concept is sometimes poorly realised
It was…interesting
Interesting listen. Has its moments. Weird.
A weird listen and a fun one for sure. I really like it when there's albums on here that don't sound like anything else on the list. The 4 songs on here were all different from one another. That said, the songs themselves are fun but not very memorable. There's something nice and delightfully weird about the album but I don't think it'll ever be a mainstay in my listening habits.
Pretty fresh, different. Not bad....
While I'm relatively well-versed in the Can catalogue, I'm too young to have experienced any of it firsthand. So, I can't say how Czukay's musical appropriation and World Tourism -slash— Borderline Orientalism was received at the time. But for me, "Persian Love" and "Cool in the Pool" are the songs where that dynamic is most apparent. And they also happen to be the weakest ones. These two song-collage-compositions seem intent on engaging with kitsch but time has collapsed whatever critical ironic distance might have been intended into something that now just feels corny. They are not abject failures — in fact, their streaming numbers are in the millions. Two stars! And here's where the schism starts. It's a four-song album. I'm a perfect 50/50 split. I find the humor and playfulness of both "Oh Lord, Give Us More Money" and "Hollywood Symphony" to still have some critical bite while also being vastly superior compositions. They have more movement to them. And not for nothing, they are more Canny to my ear. Both are significantly longer. But of course, these tracks appear to be significantly less played (like 70-80k plays each). Five stars! In the end, I can only assume the popular ones have to be featured on Spotify somewhere, or there's just a massive Kitsch-Industrial-Complex at work. Either way, it's a bit ironic to feel this cut-up and out of sync on a record exploring early sampling by splices and the collage form in music. Three stars, I guess.
Weird, but kind of cool. Fun background music. I'd say solid 3/5 - and I think I will listen again.
Out there, man
Not too bad
Pretty nice funky sounding stuff, goes on a bit long though.
Feels modern for its time. Holger Czukay really made it work, it’s a cohesive album it’s not just random noises I like how they sound together.
Still not completely sure how I feel on this one, I may never be sure. Some very interesting stuff and some interesting mix I can get lost in, and then some oddball stuff that just takes me out of it.
Very interesting. Glad I listened to it, but it is not my jams.
I love the Damo Suzuki Can albums, but I've struggled to get into other Can albums than those and Monster Movie/Soon Over Babluma. I feel like the stars all aligned for them to make incredible, kosmische music for a few years. I wasn't aware of this album, and although I enjoyed it well enough, I don't think I'll be returning to it.
Yeah pretty good. More accessible than Can
a lot of sounds
Okay.
The thing about these German Electronica bands is that I dig how they’re into making soundscapes as opposed to incessantly throbbing bullshit. This is a fun weird experience.
you know what, sure
I really don't know what to think of this so I'm just going to give it a 3.
It was kinda interesting actually
Funky
Singular, so far. Only got through about a song and some change, but I wanna keep working through these, so I’m marking this a 3 as a placeholder for now to move onto the next.
Audio trifle.
those who CAN --
Experimentell, elektronisch
good.
I know it's not his fault, but his accent reminds me too much of the Germans from The Big Lebowski and it makes it hard to take him seriously. There is some interesting stuff here, but not as interesting as his CAN projects. The 10+ minute songs are my favorite, but they lack a little direction and I feel they could be trimmed a little. High 3.
I was skeptical, but this album surprised me. It was ahead of its time, and covers a lot of territory - at times coming off like a Zappa song making fun of pop music of the moment, and other times a very Eno/Byrne sound collage with intrinsic value.
"The Godfather"; "Pulp Fiction"; "Fight Club"; "The Big Lebowski"; "Nosferatu", "Forrest Gump"; "Everything, Everywhere All At Once".
An interesting concept.
German art rock? Started off really weird but then became more instrumental, and I really liked the spacey vibes.
This is the sort of mad stuff that I signed up for. I don't much like the album but I'm glad I've listened to it.
I don't know how to feel?? Here's a 3.
Weird in a good way. I enjoyed this
Weird but compelling. Will need to check back In with this on my own time, not the best soundtrack for work, bit too intricately produced. Rating: 3.0
Another left field selection. Weird enough to be interesting.
Interesting album that's pretty fun to listen to. It feels at times just a little.. manic? But it's still pretty controlled so I don't know if that's exactly what I'm getting at. I definitely enjoyed it but I don't know if it's something that I would find particularly memorable or that I would often come back to. I could however see this album being something that some young people will nerd out and fall in love with in years from now. There's something definitely intriguing about it. I like the album title and cover. Like the music, they are just surreal enough for me to be pulled in and want to investigate more.
Weird little ride, this one. Spun during my morning routine and an hour drive. Feels like late-night radio for aliens. Jazzy, ambient, sometimes even a bit cartoonish - but it’s not annoying about it. I liked the mess. It drifts and loops and throws weird shit at you like it's trying to get a reaction. Not unpalatable at all, but it’s definitely showing off. I just sorta sat there and nodded. I was never really bored; this was fun. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions: - Cool in the Pool - Persian Love
first listen very strange
Funsies
Getting Cool in the Pool is easily a top 5 song about pools for me, and the Persian one caught my interest as well.
This one was a little out there lyrically, but musically it was actually decent.
Enjoyed it!
Trippy, kooky, and groovy. This is one of those records where the artist went to do something unorthodox and experimental and it worked. A combination of different electronic sounds, vocal melodies, and off-the-wall sequencing techniques. This is the type of record that really makes me re-think my perspective of what music is, and realizing that we do not need to conform ourselves to a recipe or structure in order to "fit." We can make whatever the hell we want as long as we, the artists, enjoy it.
Its ok started well then went off a bit
A bit weird but OK
Not unpleasant
Experimental gut.
what a weekend. turns out I don't hate ambient experimental German music
Sometimes a 3 is decent, but neither good nor bad. sometimes it is good with flaws. This time, it is a 3 because it is interesting, inventive, and not boring. I am glad I heard it but would never seek it out again.
A bit meandering in places but it seems to be a cool blend of disco, funk, jazz and prog. I’m not an expert in “krautrock” except that I like Kraftwerk. This doesn’t sound like Kraftwerk but it is cool that what is under the krautrock umbrella has a bit of diversity.
The soundtrack to a movie that was shown once, at noon, at some local indie movie theater, in one auditorium rented by the producers for tax and distribution purposes. Weird and delightful...
Grooved with the instrumentals, but would not listen again.
This is #day188 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... let’s go to the movies. Or rather, let’s imagine movies that are meant to be heard, not seen, movies without pictures, where sound tells the narrative. However, the narrative is rather loose, which is no surprise because Holger Czukay is a member of Can. I'm fine with some Can now and then (in fact, I rated Tago Mago a 5 a couple of months ago), but I’ve never explored their solo works. As a one-off listen, this album is okayish—definitely fun, but not much more. I’d give it a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day189.
Okay I originally thought “what a weirdo” when I started this one. But then I looked into him and it felt more like “mission accomplished”. I liked this more than makes sense.
Holger Czukay (from Can) attempts to push krautrock in new, bold directions by synthesizing it with other '70s styles at the turn of the decade. Funk rock, progressive electronic, even some influence from contemporary Egyptian pop. The album is also littered with odd sampling choices that give the album more texture, though perhaps at the cost of being rather incoherent. Movies is brimming with ideas that never quite gel. I like to think that this could've been a much more influential, important album for it's artistic choices, but I can see why this didn't catch on.
I'm huge Can fan, but honestly if I had not known that Holger Czukay was responsible for the music in this record, I would have taken some parts of it as somewhat lopsided or meandering just fot the hell of it (which is *not* how I receive a very large part of the music played on Can albums). I can see how the sampling techniques or subtle afro-beat elements in *Movies* might have influenced David Byrne and Brian Eno for *My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts* and *Remain In Light*, but chances are that the latter mostly took inspiration from their own technical abilities or the African sources themselves, and so didn't really need to have heard this album to create their masterpieces. Oh, and their own results after being exposed to those sorts of influence sounded tighter and more direct anyway. Not that *Movies* is a bad album, mind you. It's really interesting stuff. Some of it aged quite a lot, but other moments still sound as fresh as they did in 1979. "Persian Love" is an amazing track for instance (and maybe one where experimentation is admittedly more digestible). Yet I'm afraid the *overall* results of those experiments are not impressive enough to make it a mandatory listen for newbies in the different genres here tackled with (kraut, world, jazz, afro, disco, white funk...) Plus, ain't there one or two essential Can albums missing in Dimery's list (which this slot could be useful for)?. So kudos to Holger for using all those test tubes so as to potentially allow himself and others to break new grounds. Yet not all peer-reviewed papers out there have changed the world. It's in the very nature of experimentation to *not* guarantee any result, is it not? 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: around thirty or twenty, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book. Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 464 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 279 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 336 (including this one)
That was kind of strange, but also quite cheerful, so that helps.
Definitely different!
Part of me feels like this is the exact sort of album that I'm doing this entire exercise for? I mean, it was fine, but Avant-Garde German Ambient Pop is simply not something I'll ever come across in my day-to-day life. I... Liked this just fine? Sounds a little bit like if Trey Anistasio was born in war-torn Poland 30 years earlier, and though I'm not going to be seeking out Holger Czukay in the future, I cherish the small amount of time I spent with him today.
This shit is weird. To be fair, though, everything coming out of Germany in the 60s and 70s was weird as fuck. You can definitely hear some Can in this album, especially in the first song. This album doesn't live up to their standard, but it's still a cool listen. 3/5
Dziwny eksperyment muzyczny, bo płytą to trudno nazwać. Trochę jakby w jedną rękę wziąć sampler, w drugą gitarę i przygrywać sobie stopą na keabordzie. Ciekawa dziwnostka do której nigdy nie wrócę. 5/10
Actually quite enjoyed the funkiness of this one! Haven’t got much to say, but the way the lady said “oooh is it hot?” at the beginning of cool in the pool did make me giggle. Cool in the pool was my favourite song, the others were not as fun! I’d give that song perhaps a 4/5 but the rest let it down so I shall have to give a 3 :)
Pretty unique album, I like the mix of samples used - pretty wacky stuff. Nice amount of avant-gardeness for me, lots of crazy plinky plonky sounds had me foot tapping along - nice one Holger. I think if this album was any longer it would get a bit tedious. Gonna give him a harsh 3 overall, would probably give cool in the pool a 4. let us get hot on the dancing spot Fav song: Cool in the Pool 😎
A sort-of-interesting collection of sonic experiments. Sometimes it holds together and sometimes it doesn't.
This was wild.
This one is kind of weird, but not terrible. It's like a late '70s experimental rock electronic thing. The guy is some German dude that was also in a band called Can I guess. He doesn't really sing here, he kind of weirdly exclaims and moans and whispers things. The synthesizers and whatever else it is that he's playing sound very dated, but in a way that kind of still works. He also has some elements of non-Western music in here (most notably on "Persian Love", but they pop up here and there elsewhere too). It feels slightly forced, but it makes for an interesting mix of things going on. Anyway, it's all a bit strange, but I don't actually hate the beats. He's got some cool basslines throughout, it's not bad. Not amazing, but not bad either. Favorite song: Cool in the Pool Other: Persian Love 1/15/25
In a nutshell: an unexpected journey. The co-founder of Can takes a mic, a radio and a tape recorder and goes on a sonic safari. A strange one. This could be the earliest example of sampledelica on the list. It reminded me a lot of Since I Left You with the sound grabs and thematic tunes. Fun. Not for everyone. Overall: 6/10
There's a warm spot in the pool
Very interesting listen. Probably will not return to it, but cool while it lasted.
Never heard of this album or artist, but after settling in, following a period of ear adjustment, I really enjoyed it. Sounded like Mike Oldfield on Acid.
Wow this one was weird - I kinda liked it
weird. not bad, atmospheric, but I'd be hard pressed to remember a single song I heard even if I listened ot the "sounds like" for a long time.
Synth jazz? Interesting, original for the time
One of those weird experimental albums that really breaks out of any genre definitions. I would name it a blend of jazz, psychedelic rock, and prog rock. I did enjoy it at times but to be honest it was a little too disjointed for me to fall in love with it.
Was unfamiliar. Good stuff
-ooo Holger Czukay… I didn’t realize he made any solo albums. Definitely sort of reminiscent of Can, especially their post-Damo Suzuki stuff -couldn’t help but feel it was lacking a certain direction and charm though. I didn’t hate it though, it had some especially interesting instrumentation -Favorites are Oh Lord, Give Us More Money and Persian Love
really oscillating between annoying chaos and incredibly chill vibes. reading that this is one of the main guys from CAN helped me understand this a bit more.....def prefer CAN tho.
Eclectic
Funky electronic jazz vibe
It’s odd. I like that.
The former member of CAN channels his roots as a student of German avant garde master Karlheinz Stockhausen. Czulkay combines rock and pop with musique concrete and the budding world music genre, pulling sounds from global music scenes. It's an impressive mash up and took some underground ideas of the 70s further. It's not exactly inaccessible but it's not one that you'd play over and over, unless you're a student of modern music theory. In some ways, it's more interesting to think about than to listen to. It's cool for what it is, but I'd take CAN over this any day.
🎶 cool in the pool 🎶
Had never heard of Holger so was a first for me. Not quite smoking what Tom's smoking but did enjoy it although overall found it a mixed bag - enjoyed parts - although other parts had very strong flight of concords vibe...
Only vaguely interesting ("Persian Love" is pretty nifty and "Hollywood Symphony" offering a few moments of intrigue). Ultimately, this seems well deserving of its position as no more than a footnote in the annals of rock history. One's reminded that influence isn't everything and suspects his estate wishes he had patented sampling.
I found this hard to rate as it's not particularly straightforward or accessible but there were loads of really interesting ideas and some fun moments that made me smile. The overall vibe was great. It feel unfair but I'd have almost definitely rated it a little higher if it was divided into more palatable tracks and the ideas fleshed out and tidied up, but I also appreciate that a lot the charm is in the messy looseness of it. I find myself coming down on the slightly lower side of a 3.5 because I don't think I'll choose to go here again but if it comes along I'm happy to have it on. If my finger slipped and gave it a 4, I wouldn't go back and change it.
I liked this a lot more than you two did, it probably isn't something I'll revisit much in future but have listened to it 3-4 times over the last few days. It's weird, quirky, lots of different influences, and does some stuff with sampling that is ahead of its time, I think? More experimental than I'd like, but definitely worth a listen. 3/5.
wacky experience music, but kinda fun
Album was okay. Definitely sounds like a movie score. 3/5 Probably won't listen again.
This was different in a good way and it was interesting enough for me to listen to it all the way through. I liked it and wouldn't object to hearing it again though I probably wouldn't actively seek it out.
This is like a mid can album, remnants of something truly fantastic
This was pretty cool listening. I was vibing with it.
Though you may not like this album, you can't deny it's forward looking M.O. The use of samples is way ahead of it's time and though it's strange some of the beats and guiatr floruishes are great. Best Tracks: Oh Lord, Give Us More Money; Persian Love
Experimental music. Not bad per se, just not my cup of tea. 2.5/5
Well, I love Can, so ole Holger had that going for him. I felt like this straddled the line between ambient and prog, the latter being a genre I don't care for. I wanted to like this but felt ambivalent about it by the end.
Weird. Kooky.
Well, that was certainly a thing.
Not as good as my favorite Can records (this guy was in Can), but it's still fucking weird and I respect that. I enjoyed the ride. I think the reason this was on this list was because it was an early example of sampling-based work, he collected a lot of the elements just by listening to random things on the radio. Very weird and funky freaky experimental rock/electronic record, with Persian and African music. I don't know. I'm glad I heard it.
3.4 stars rounded down.
Interesting. I liked this way more than I liked the CAN album so far, but, this is just a weird little record.
Not sure what that was, didn't love it but it was certainly something
Started good, then got very experimental in not a great way.
Very interesting, would definitely listen again.
Ah I forgot to rate this and it's been a few days... I remember the first song about being hot and cool in the pool being memorable and strange. Other than I think the rest was quite odd? I can't remember particulars though I think it was fine.
Shit you not one of my first thoughts was “this bass has Can written all over it.” +1 for Cool in the Pool
yea but no
Incredible to listen to for the first time. Radio excerpts and sampling paving the way for so many other artists and albums. Can completely see why it is here. Inventive, ground-breaking and off it's tits in many ways. Persian Love pushed it into 4* / 5* territory but the rest of the album couldn't quite get there so sits at a high 3*. Will recommend and listen again but not hitting the heart strings enough for a four
Probably the most "krautrock" a single krautrock album can sound. It's extraordinarily strange, though not entirely the type of "strange" I enjoy - I guess "kooky" is the right word. Some parts haven't aged all that well either, while others still sound sick today. I liked the choppy falsetto vocal samples on 'Cool in the Pool'. Come to think of it, the vocal sampling here was the most impressive part - I quite enjoyed the inclusion of Farsi (I think?) vocals on 'Persian Love'. In isolation, the sounds here sound pretty cool, be it the string segments, the basslines, or the groovy final minutes to 'Hollywood Symphony' - but everything sounds so incoherent - constantly jumping around and switching tone so frantically without any distinct structure. Instruments and ideas fade in and out like nothing. Overall though, I still dug what I heard here - it's not bad at all.
i like persian love silly goofy
3 weird experience of an album that I’m not mad I listened to but won’t listen to again
Good weird shit. Cool in the Pool is a banger. 3.5/5
Layers of nonsense, with no clear structure and sounding like it was written by rolling dice to see what to do next.
3.5
The songs were quite long, but I also didn’t hate it? I actually liked it a decent amount, a bit quirky and groovy.
Noioso
This was very very weird but I actually quit enjoyed it 3/5
I felt like in a movie. It met my expectations
I really didn't like "cool in the pool", but the rest of the tracks were quite nice. Not something I would listen to again though.
Quite enjoyed this. Easy nice listen 6/10
"Movies" is second solo studio album by co-founder of Krautrock group Can Holger Czukay. Experimental rock, art rock and electronic rock are the Wiki-listed genres. Yes, they fit. It is considered a cult classic for its use of media samples from film, TV and short wave and apparently paved the way for later projects such as David Byrne and Brian Eno's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." The album was self-produced and self-mixed and Czukay plays a lot the instruments including vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards and synthesizers. Guitar, a horn sample and a disco dance beat open the album and the song "Cool in the Pool." This is light and fun. Czukay repeating "Cool in the Pool" in his German accent... pretty funny. Various noise samples - guitar, guys talking, an opera singer. "Oh Lord, Give Us More Money" gets right into ambient and soft jazz territory...a Spanish-sounding guitar. The pace changes becoming more dramatic. Some different samples including movie voices, a dog barking. A weird voice is repeating "Give us money." A sample of an Iranian singer opens "Persian Love." There's Middle Eastern-sounding guitar, synths and an electronic beat. More Farsi voice samples - talking, laughing, singing. "Hollywood Symphony" closes the album and as you could imagine a big symphony opens the song. Beat changes throughout including into a rock one. Czukay focuses on using English-speaking movie samples. Yeah, this album was interesting. It was light and wacky. Dramatic at times. Musical style changes through a few of the songs: that seems to be theme the randomizer is using on me this week. I heard electronic, ambient, movie soundtrack-loke and new age jazz. The use of samples was impressive especially given the technology at the time. I thought two of the four songs were unnecessarily too long but, overall, an enjoyable listen.
An interesting and strange project from one of the members of Can. Didn’t resonate with me anywhere near as much as any of the Can albums I’ve listened to, and the vocals were nowhere near as strong as Damo Suzuki’s, but it was still quite fun and groovy as heck as one would expect
When the Rock is Extra-Krauty 👌
Unsurprisingly this is very Can. Bits that's a good thing. It's a bit uneven but requires repeated listens. Quirky enjoyable stuff.
Not unpleasant but nothing super compelling to get me to listen again
Can is a band I have a ton of interest in. I’ve had to actually hold off on diving head first into their most popular records because I want my first listens to be through the context of this list. I assumed upon first glance that Holger Czukay was a much smaller artist, because the name did not stand out to me. A quick Google search informed me that he was one of the founding members of Can. Which immediately piqued my interest. I’ve found that the way things often trend with these kinds of albums is not great. Rarely does an artist break away from their band to create something on their own and find the same success. A good example would be The Nightfly by Donald Fagen. I wouldn’t put that anywhere close to the best material from Steely Dan. So I imagined the same thing would happen here. Except this is less of a solo album than you might think. Because I’m pretty sure every major contributing member of Can appears in some capacity on this album. Which should mean this is another great outing from a sick band. And there isn’t really anything inherently wrong with any of the four songs on this album. They were all varied enough to keep me interested. And I always appreciate some longer songs, of which this record has two. And those two are most definitely the best this has to offer. Specifically the first of the two. Oh Lord Give Us More Money is actually pretty sick. Hollywood Symphony isn’t that bad, but admittedly it sounds like the band trying to fit as much of themselves into the span of 15 minutes. Cool in the Pool is like a pseudo-disco krautrock combo. And the band themselves are still on their A-game. Can is known for being incredibly influential and forward thinking. And the way they used sampling was completely unlike anything else of the era. It’s just that something about these songs feels lacking. Even if they are varied and interesting, they struggled to hold my attention for very long as the band noodled and jammed along. I like music that sets out to challenge the listener in some way, like experimental rock. And I enjoy seeing its presence on this list. But that doesn’t always mean the albums are all that good. Rating: 5/10
9/11/24. Interesting album, loved the sounds and mix of rock and avant garde. Definitely something you can jam to if you love instrumentals, which includes me!
Interesting, and I am glad it was served up to me. However I can't see myself going back to it.
Right off the bat weird, melodic and beautiful. Growing increasingly weird through the album. A lot of different music styles layered, some island sounding rhythms with prog rock guitar and sound clips from tv shows or movies all playing out like you’re temporarily schizophrenic. A very unique listening experience but overall enjoyable.
This is strange, unique, and original. Sometimes endearingly so and sometimes annoyingly. 3/5
Odd and offbeat but I'm rather odd and offbeat so I didn't mind this. Won't listen to it all the time but it might sneak in there every now and then. Glad I was exposed to this.
3.75
Áhugavert. Mjög 70s þýskt.
surprisingly good
Weird but neat. 3/5
pretty cool need to give it a better listen tho
Certainly not a bad record but is the epitome of navel gazing.
Weird but in a kinda good way
endearingly eccentric
Kind of cool, but not something I would ever return to.
When I saw the date in Spotify as 2016 I did not question it, this sounds so futuristic it could have come out in 2216 rather than its actual release of 1979. It’s like futuristic world music, with random found sounds and this beautiful guitar throughout. Reminds me of The Durutti Column. A bit surprised I hadn’t heard this referenced as an influence for 2010s indie rock. It’s a little overly eccentric to be in the upper echelons, buts it’s an interesting entry nonetheless.
Interesting music but not my cup of tea
Fascinating cut and paste noodling.
Weird, kinda groovy - good car trip album
Interesting but so tiring. I dislike the cultural appropriation.
I have a passing familiarity with Can, but I'd never heard Holger Czukay's mane before. "Movies" is very eclectic, but always musical, which is a lot more than I can say for some of the other, stranger albums I've reviewed so far. It's interesting and pleasant, but also not really moving in any way.
Well, that was what you might expect German electronic music from 1979 to sound like. I was impressed that he’s still making music today
Ok, funky trouble
great background working, and sure that Eno must have been listening to this. Great touches of quirkiness and humour in the samples. Good choice for this list.
First time hearing this album. I likedbit
Krautrock jammin
pretty good
Trippy but in a fun way. I felt like I was in the movies listening to these, so bravo.
This was an interesting listen. Cool In the Pool is an interesting juxtaposition with the other songs on the album. I like his voice, and appreciated the experimental nature of the album. Oh Lord and Persian Love we're not as interesting to me as cool in the pool and Hollywood. 3.4/5 -> 3/5
Kieran found this stressful, I kind of liked it. Didn't finish.
Definitely not my style, but a fun listen
Surprisingly interesting. It was daft at times, but genuinely gripping at others.
This is the kind of album I could see myself revisiting when I have the time and capacity to chew on it. When I listened to it yesterday I found it a little too ambient even for my tastes. I like the format and the mustache.
A rather weird album, but not really that bad. Not necessarily my thing, but I could find elements that I enjoyed and it wasn't annoying. 3/5
Weird album. Genre blend with elements from jazz, blues, rock, pop, funk and probably more. Lots of story telling/talking.
A strange eclectic romp that combines world music with the playful-sterile synth sounds of 80s-90s training music muzak, kind of like someone started pushing a bunch of random soundboard buttons at the same time. Somehow, I feel like this album is poking fun at me. 3.5/5
I know nothing or Holger Czukay, but he must have gone (*Hugh Grant voice on*) quite mad. This is so, so weird, but kinda charming and cool. Like Ross Gellar's music if Ross Gellar was a talented musician. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Cool in the Pool Date listened: 29/05/24
Don’t hate it. But don’t love it. It’s weird.
Well for 1979 this is pretty funky although not perhaps as unique since there were a lot of artists doing odd things with noises at the time. Having said that there are some good passages that engage your interest but equally other bits that don't
Ég er svag fyrir Cool in the pool, sem ég hef oft heyrt, og næstu tveimur lögum á eftir, sem ég þekkt ekki áður).
A cool little surprise. I could stand to come back to this. 3.5/5
Better than “Can” still odd though. Guess that is what made it listenable. Maybe 3.5?
A bit noisy, weird sounds
Liked the idea of something I'd completely never heard before. Didn't particularly like the music but extra points for originality.
Weird album that combined being very difficult to listen to with being very very good to do work while listening to.
this was annoying but the goofy synths mean i almost don't care
I was ready for another suck electronic album but this is actually pretty cool and interesting. Electronic meets progressive with some Zappa sensibilities
The kind of music Noel fielding puts on before he requests £4.37 from the 18 year old lass he gave a line to because she wouldn't put on a toga and cowboy hat while playing a kazoo
Very interesting album here. I really like how forward the doohickey is in the mix. The contraptions are certainly going in on some of these songs. Could have used more thingamajig throughout, since it really shone in Oh Lord, Give Us More Money. Honestly though, this started out a bit hectic but really settled in the second half. Maybe not so good to get all the way into 4 stars, but I was grooving for a good portion of this.
What a fun eclectic full sounding record. I like the pool song. Lol. 1979 was definitely the year for this weird sounds for 14 mins. Haha
Difficult to rate an album where one of the four songs is 13 minutes and mostly sound effects.
4 songs hmm. It's either going to be fire, a hot mess, and/or amazingly pretentious. 1st song. Funky bass line, foghorn, harpsicord noise, all in a minute and 30 seconds... double hmm. But the melody is quite nice. New phrase to mutter to myself while puttering around the house just dropped "let's get cool in the pool". 2nd song is pretty good. Nice nice nice. I can groove to this. Shit he is "singing." Interesting. He is bringing in movie lines like a turntablis. I wonder when this was first done in music. He is splicing the movie audio as a vocal component. Dammit he keeps "singing". Second song is better Third song is better still. Reminds me of turntables hip hop but rock. Lots of mixed in sound, movie dialogue, etc. Found out this guy was in Can the German prog rock band and the last album I reviewed. Solid 3 out 5. Liked it enough to search out his and Can's other work and is definitely worth a listen to.
Strange 6/10
For stretches this albums really good. Definitely one of a kind. High end 3.
This is an interesting piece. It is happy sounding. I feel like that’s the primary mission for this album. I liked the arrangements. I often wonder if albums that have different versions of the same song are actually good or not? Were they out of songs? I just don’t know.
This was an interesting album. Unique sounds, good vibes. Nothing super special but a fun divergence into a new genre.
A fun surprise, which is quite a feat for a German.
Was a fun time
Cool in the Pool is a tune. After that it's a little noodly, but zipped by.
Cool usage of samples, could’ve been cut up a bit more but it’s fine for an EP
Interesting, Maybe not something I would listen to much but a good experience.
guy playing around with samples a lot. may be influential but not a great listen. did kind of get into it as background music. 2.6
curious experimental pop
Some nice noise tracks - but not terribly enjoyable overall. I might return to some of his other's tracks.
I happen to love Can bc of the huge kraftwerk influence but he uses an annoying number of instruments on this album. Still some catchy tunes and nice vibes.
krautrock. Popurrí instrumental. Ni fu ni fa.
era bajista de can! igual no entiendo el krautrock
This is wild. A lot is going on here. I tried to listen first time around but found it too chaotic and then I had some writing to do that I'd been putting off and found it was the perfect soundtrack to motivate me. Would I put it on again? It's unlikely. But it was good while I needed it.
Weird but strangely captivating
Another odd one. But not horrible
I enjoyed the jazzy sounds of Cool in the Pool and the worldly beats of Persian Love. The others were a little too far out for me.
I like it!
interesting...
Well there you go. From hippie undertones, to cosmic cowboys, was there even some reverb washed hammered dulcimer? Pretty far out man.
That was some damn kooky business.
A much-appreciated solo LP from one of the CAN crew that definitely lives within the same vein as its parent project. Doesn’t fall into the trap of most krautrock albums where the tracks run much longer than their noodly hooks and melodies can sustain interest - there was an appropriate jam to length ratio going on for most of the time here, and the instrumentals were interesting enough to keep things moving. Not the most memorable album in the world, but definitely appreciated after a run of 90s breakbeat and British garbage here recently.
Decent, although it's kind of chaotic, which makes it difficult to listen to.
An ok album
Alvöru gaur hann Holger! Þetta er náttúrulega sturluð plata. Rúllaði furðulega vel í gegn hjá mér miðað við svona hálf avant garde dæmi. Flott tilraunastarfsemi.
Mjög áhugaverð plata. Can miklir áhrifavaldar í indítónlist og skemmtilega tilraunir á þessari plötu. Cool in the pool and Persian love skemmtileg lög.
A small collection of songs trying to act as multi-genre prog, but actually not really settling on any genre. It’s an odd, nondescript kind of sound, but it also jams nicely, especially in the opening track. Czukay’s German accent is also really fun across all tracks, and it’s placed tastefully (i.e. not overused). The synths are also pretty fun. The instruments generally don’t show much “flourish” or expertise, and the hooks (if there were any) aren’t memorable. I guess it’s a little unclear what musical statement Czukay was trying to make. It sounds good, though, so I shouldn’t complain! Key track: Cool in the Pool
That was some weird stuff. Exactly the kind of weird I want, though. Not annoying (not particularly good either), just existing in its own little cosmos. Glad I got to experience this.
Very odd! But was it good? I have no idea.
I don’t know what to say about this, definitely WEIRD and experimental. Never heard of this artist before. I enjoyed “Lord give us more money” as background music but there is so much going on it got a bit disjointed and fatiguing for my taste. I enjoyed the more laid-back vibe of ‘Persian Love’ and ‘Hollywood Symphony’. Maybe a jazz background, certainly playing with sampling. Enjoyed hearing something new
Strange different and influential, ticks a lot of boxes for an album to be included on this list.
very artsy
Unusual!
Know and love Can, know zero about any solo projects. Not really sure why this is in the list, but then it's also the weird shit that I'm in this for, at least partially. First track was weird in a goofy 70s way that I'm not altogether on board with. Second track was loads better as it developed. Persian Love was pretty good to be fair if a little dated sounding.
I liked the first song. It kind of wandered around and I didn't find the vocals added anything beyond that. A cool listen. Not a favourite. I'll relisten to that first song.
Fun, cheeky, interesting. Didn't hate it. Would be surprised if I remember it in a month.
Chapeau l'artiste.
Interesting combination of sounds. I like the first song, but not so much the others...
Weird Music, but I kind of like it ... 3 stars
It was not a genre that I enjoy, so I can’t tell you if it was good within that genre. I didn’t hate it, so I listened to the whole album, but I didn’t really enjoy it.
I like Can, and Cool In The Pool scratched an itch to be propositioned by a camp sounding German accented man which I didn’t knownI had. I haven’t laughed so much at a song in ages. Oh Lord, Give Is More Money and Hollywood Symphony were both good, the former often sounding like an interesting funk jam, Persian Love on the other hand was mostly forgettable. I liked this album fine, but it didn’t have the same sort of relentless experimentation that made Can’s work so groundbreaking. It was a fun, gentle, sort of proto-synth record.
It most certainly was eclectic. It falls in the category of albums that I might like if I listened to it a dozen times. After a couple of listens it's stuck in the middle.
I love “Persian Love”. The sampling would have been fairly progressive for 1979. The vocals/lyrics on “Cool in the Pool” and “Oh Lord give us more Money” are chuckle-worthy, as I think they were meant to be, but the latter is a bit hard to bear at times. The longer tracks have some nice passages, though I’m not a fan of the sudden interruptions, tempo changes, added noises, shifts in volume or Holgar's shrill voice. I suppose it’s harder to be musical than experimental.
I'm not sure what this has to do with "Movies", but this is much more accessible than his work with Can. Props to him for forging a path with World Music and sampling, but I think he overdid the vocal samples in Hollywood Symphony. The most enjoyable and playful track for me was Persian Love with its blend of funky/afrobeat/world music.
#83. Funky weird jazz rock something. I'm honestly not entirely sure. 3/5: What is happening?
What an odd, but pleasant album! It's relatively short (4 tracks totaling in at roughly 40 minutes) and each song is incredibly different from the next. I didn't think the vocals added anything of value; but the instrumentals were particularly noteworthy. The parts without the vocals really allowed the weird but beautiful music to shine. "Persian Love", in particular, sets such a beautiful and ambient scene.
Rating: 6.5/10 Good experimental album. Really enjoyed the instrumentation, weird but not too much, Holger Czukay incorporated a lot of interest sounds without it ever being too overwhelming. I wish this whole album was instrumental, the singing is awful and what prevents it from being rated much higher. Favorite songs: Parts of Oh Lord, Persian Love, Hollywood Symphony. Worst song: Cool in the Pool.
Funky, better than expected
All over the map. Should be sold w a bong. Need to listen a couple more times, i think.
Cool album. I'm slowly learning about Can and they are really interesting. I can't imagine anyone sounding the way hey did at that time. But this is not a Can review. Movies starts out great and continues to intrigue if not dazzle. The last song I find a bit boring but the album as a whole is worth a few listens to digest. 3.5 stars that could get higher with more listens.
very experimental. a hodgepodge of genres all thrown together to form songs. not necessarily a bad listen, but definitely a weird listen.
Cool in the Pool is good, the rest is just a nice listen....
Ahh yes, every funky track needs random dog barking and laser noises... Honestly, I don't know what to make of this album. I found myself enjoying the funky music often, but the entire album was just so... weird... that I can't see myself listening to this ever again. This is my second Krautrock album that this site has recommended me and I think I've learned that the genre is too... avant garde? For me? I mean, I like strange music if it makes sense, this just sounded like someone snuck into the mixing room after the track was finalized and started messing around with the sound effects board on the piano. "YES! MORE LASER NOISES! MORE THUNDER NOISES! DID I ADD A CATS MEOW IN HERE? NO? WELL HERE YOU GO" Idk, I enjoyed it somewhat. 2.5/5 but I'll bump it up to a 3 since it was catchy.
Strange in all the right ways…
Slightly nuts, but really cool in places
Was not what i was expecting but good.
Horrible opening song but does improve somewhat. Seems like a lesser ancestor of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.
It was a little unusual at first but this album grew on me. I didn't love Can either (Czukay's band before he went solo) but also didn't hate them and found their work innovative. Same here. I guess hew as most known for being one of the first to introduce sampling and that is here in spades. I think if anything, it's a bit manic and sometimes used unnecessarily. But at other times the clips he inserts are spot on. And then coupled with his funky beats, it can be quite interesting - the last half of Hollywood Symphony I thought was his best work on this album. Maybe the last half of Oh Lord, Give Us More Money too. Almost had a bit of a Talking Heads feel with the frantic beats and sampling (at least later TH or David Byrne efforts). All in all, a bit too strange? I found myself reaching for a 4 but couldn't quite do it.
I haven't gotten into any of Czukay's other projects besides CAN, but this was pretty good. Has a nice krautrock vibe, while also being experimental post rock. The samples are used sparingly, which I liked.
I dunno about this. I played it in the background and I didn't hate it but nothing stood out as remarkably wonderful or remarkably terrible. I vaguely recall some interesting chord progressions and odd orchestrations, but is innovative synonymous with essential?
Interesting instrumental album. Pleasant music, but the movements were longer than I’d like. 3/5
Experimental.
Weird in a good way
After blazing a trail with one of the most influential and consequential rock groups of all time, Holger Cuzkay decided that it was once again time to go solo and Movies is a rather apt descriptor for what he was aiming to accomplish. Apart from Hollywood Symphony, there is very little in the way of noodling instrumentation and dizzying composition; keeping things on the short and sweet side whilst venturing on the weirdo trek that serves him well. Overall, one of Holger's finer outings and a nice step out into a new terrain. Favorites: Cool in the Pool, Hollywood Symphony.
weird and interesting. 3 stars.
Very strange album. Some parts good as ambient music. Can hear some influences from other bands here and there. Cool in the Pool is very weird!
I like this challenge because I get to discover new stuff but then can’t help to feel a bit ignorant for not knowing so many! Never heard of this artist before and found the record very experimental in a quirky and good way.
This album is alright but is just not really my thing. It's a little too all over the place most of the time for my ADD but there are definitely some good moments on it. I don't see myself coming back to it for a full listen but not upset I experienced it this time. Standout Tracks: Cool In the Pool, Persian Love
unusual, but ok
5/10
I was quite bemused by this one! I did want to get Cool in the Pool. I found this hard to place and on reflection I do think I appreciate what it was and thought it was good fun.. and slightly mad.
Well this was fascinating, can't say I loved and would listen regularly but it was very interesting to hear. Never heard of this guy.
Parts of it were interesting and it was fun, but probably not going to listen again
I’m not sure what this is but I like it. 4/5 a little too avant garde 3/5
Super long songs, this felt like just a general jam album. Good to have in the background but I didn't need to pay much attention. "Oh Lord, Give Us More Money" was unhinged but entertaining.
This is very chaotic late-70s pop music. It gives a lot of MF Doom vibes with the different samples and sound effects from different things like movies cartoons and TV. Sometimes it's pretty cool and good, other times it's not and kind of samey and boring. It definitely has a lot of aspects that were ahead of their time. Sometimes it sounds like this guy is emulating Santana (who I am surprised we haven't seen) A solid 3/5
Rating: 6/10
