Rare funk om mensen even van het ritme te gooien, en ik ben er helemaal bij
Loved that!
This. Was. Awesome. I've listened to it at least three times already. All the different layers and sampling are just so entertaining. It's such an animated collection of songs, songs that are continuously morphing in surprising ways. I'm loving all the world music incorporated as well. Holger Czukay is a founding member of Can. I haven't generated any Can albums yet, but I just recently listened to a couple of them, so this was timely. I definitely declare Movies to be a headphones album. Ahh, I don't think I could ever get bored of this!
Yes. This is what I was hoping this little experiment would deliver—hidden gems that I might not otherwise have discovered.
Slowly realizing that Can and its members might be some of my favorite music. Czukay delivers some wonderfully challenging yet approachable pop music on Movies. Quite the masterpiece.
really interesting album. it's a bit goofy at times (get used to canned sound effects, etc.) but the musicianship here is great and the songs are so interesting to me. none of them are boring and take you every which way, which is what i loved about it.
I can’t believe this was from 1979. So inventive.
Awesome and weird
This is wild.
Where has this been all my life. Spotify kept the higs coming on a Czukay radio afterwards as well.
Weirdly awesome, and awesomely weird! Amazingly mature use of sampling for 1979 - prefigures a whole bunch of genres. The video for "Cool in the Pool" is a true oddity, and well worth seeking out. Turns out I was familiar with that track (and one other from a different album) from the "Morvern Callar" soundtrack. Loved this, and definitely need to dig through the rest of his discography! Fave track - "Cool in the Pool" for something a little poppy, "Oh Lord Give Us More Money" for feeling like a voyage.
For fans of experiment, mash up or, hell, breakcorefans taking opium. This one hell of an album, flirting with everything from pop to classical and even Arabic music.
FIRE 10/10
This album took me a few minutes to get into. To be honest I nearly switched it off for another time as I thought I wasn't in the mood. Then it grabbed me. Not knowing Holger Czukay was from Can, I started to think this was folk music take on Kraut Rock. F'ing mesmerising stuff. I was kind of upset when it ended as only about 28 minutes had passed. Felt like hours but in a good way
hell yeah that's what I'm here for
Wild vibes but sort of a groove
Czukay is weird and a genius, loved his minimal albums with David Sylvian, ant this freaky music also nice. Some songs were stolen from Life In The Bush of Ghosts (Eno/Byrne) I thought and only then found out the album is released years before! More prove this man deserve full marks
What an incredibly cool and fun album! Its so charming and has some gorgeous moments that really are just awe inspiring. Most of it is just background music, but its really chill background music that I can easily sink my teeth into, and Holger Czukay's voice is a little silly, but overall really nice, making for a really great little jam thing with bits of greatness sprinkled in; enough so that I don't have anything but praise for this record. Really surprising, but a welcome surprise nonetheless.
YAYAYAYAYYA I LOVED IT 5/5 Fave Tracks: all of them
This is why I’m doing this. Very interesting music from an interesting guy. Recommend reading the wiki about him
I like CAN, I like german „Krautrock“ - 5 stars from me for Holger
Loved it
like the first 3 songs, last one was hard to get through
cool
Wow! I really liked this. It's refreshingly strange and vintage-y. This dude Holger was kinda ahead of his time. This stuff evolved further in the 80's but built up that indelible 80's stank that you can't get rid of.
I was prepared to not like this album because I don't usually listen to this genre. I had heard some tracks from his former band Can and I was not impressed. Was I wrong. Every track on this album is amazing. It is the perfect marriage of experimentation and pop music.
Really enjoyed this - lighthearted and innovative at the same time. I love the idea that he was improvising scores for his amusement as he watched movies. I think "Cool in the Pool" is my new favorite song.
This was good fun and quite funky. I don't really get the low score.
bem experimental mesmo, vai pra vários lados mas eh interessante. até as mais longas não enjoam, mto bem feito e divertidinho!!
this was really fun and cool... and i liked the iranian song... i like can
Breath of fresh air. Loved this.
This is a bit more like it. German experimental from one of the Can mainstays.
Really liked this. Just the right amount of weird and a nice break from generic rock. 4/5.
Right up my alley although the songs themselves don’t really lead to anywhere
On the one hand, I really liked this album, and the creativity is overflowing. It is fun, has a great soundscape that is well produced, and the songwriting is experimental but still has a lot of musicality and melody. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because it feels more like an EP than a full album. Even with longer songs, it still feels like a partial work.
Gorgeously weird and wonderful. The hottest day of the year, with a heatwave across the south of the UK. So this absolutely gets bonus points for Cool in the Pool – especially with the vaguely camp German accent. Perfect. Really enjoyed the vague afro-beats rhythm of Persian Love as well. A lovely surprise. There might be days when I'd have hated this I suppose, but not today.
I enjoyed this album. While wary of drawing parallels with other bands, it reminded me of the Durutti Column (will they appear in 1001?). It fuses various influences to create hypnotic electronic dance rhythms.
fav songs: cool in the pool experimental, innovative, playful, wonky 70/100
Liked this a lot. Little weirdo music. Krautrock is great, and I would definitely like to get cool in the pool.
Fascinating album - there’s not a dull moment in the four tracks. Favourite track: Cool in the Pool
Fun and funky. I think it bridges the accessible with avant- and experimental writing in a way that is endearing. If someone wants to get into experimental music, but isn’t ready for harsh textures or anything overly insane, this would be a good place to start.
no entiendo como esto tiene reviews tan controvertidas, me parece una obra de arte en cuanto a música experimental que juega con el ambiente y la comodidad de quien lo escucha. mis respetos al polaco que creó esto 9/10
Weird af, but I smiled most of the time, and I will play it again, when life has been uneasy on me.
CAN you dig it. yes i CAN.
Unique
Well this was satisfyingly weird. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll check out international radio stations and tune in to weird German experimental radio stations, and this is the type of thing that is playing a good 80% of the time. Whilst I would've preferred more shorter tracks as the two (relatively) shorter songs kept me hooked the longest, I did actually enjoy this a lot. The synth heavy tunes combined with early sampling techniques feel so of its time, but it all comes together to be quite fun. I don't know how "good" it is in the traditional sense, but I do know I was entertained.
Hated the first song but now I’m into African psychedelic?? Is that what this is??
Now we’re talking. This is what I want from this list. Never heard of it, weird, and right up my street.
Okay I was skeptical but I actually thought this was interesting
OK, I judged this by the cover immediately and I was just not on the mood for whatever this was. I wasn't surprised at all by how it sounded. That said, for some reason, I loved it. Right off the bat, I felt this guy is absolutely taking the piss and I'm here for it. I'm going to give it a wildcard 4 as it just worked for me tonight and I'll come back to it again.
Funky, electronic, experimental with a touch of jazz, is right up my alley so not a lot of complaints. Is it the most memorable? No, but it was just weird enough to capture my attention for the full 40minutes it was on. Apparently he’s mostly known for being in CAN, I did not like Tago Mago at all so maybe I have to revisit it. Although I feel like this has more spunk, pzazz and was just overall more fun to listen to for me.
Éternellement prenant.
Young people today can't even comprehend how hard this album would have been to compile and put together. I wouldn't say the songs are the best, but the production for 1979 is fantastic!
This was a great experience. Did I like it? Yes Also did I like it? No
Bonkers, experimental krautrock. Prretty fun.
Most of this is excellent—great vibes, steady groove, really enjoyable—but it crosses the fun/weird line often enough for me not to give it a full 5.
Oddly enjoyable.
A fun, auditory adventure!
by far one of the most unique albums ive listened to so far
Keep this shit coming man, as a ween fan I love all the weirdness of this, i love weird music and seeing the beauty and art hidden beneath it. And it is clear to see the beauty here. Good stuff mang!
Not sure what I was listening to but I liked it.
Interesting. Some of the vocal stuff I found kind of annoying but the compositions and uses of sampling were good.
its nice can get a little distracting overall has a nice vibe to it no favs really
Geweldig. Moest even inkomen maar de lange nummers zijn een hemelse trip
Pretty good. Didn't see that coming!
Experimental and yet quite accessible, Can's drummer Holger Czukay weaves a brilliant tapestry of world music, with space rock and psychedelic overtones. This is such a trippy and groovy album to listen to.
Random and ubiquitous media dialed in on the telly and the transistor; beautifully meshed with bass slaps, synth noodles, and subtle vocals to create a lush soundscape full of whimsical and dramatic twist and turns.
Thoroughly enjoyed this album. Second time I listened, I realized that it gave me some Cory Wong vibes, but was kind of surprised that this albums was released all the way back in 1979. If feels really modern, not almost five decades old. 100% recommend. Pretty much the entire album went onto my Liked Songs list.
Oh Lord give us More money daarna begint super vreemd. FAVO:Cool in dze pool, Persian Love, Hollywood Symphony
This is a great listen. Very weird, but entertaining. 4.0/5.0: Great
Really interesting and avant garde album. Had no idea where it was going next. I, for one, really enjoy that when it is coupled with a high level of musicianship. After listening it's no surprise this guy was a founding member of the band Can. Never heard of it prior but it was definitely a trip. Not sure I'll listen to it a bunch but it made my drive to work really interesting.
mi favorita: persian love
Muy parecido a Frank Zappa, demasiaso groove y funk. Le doy un 9, gran descubrimiento de Alemania 🙌🏼✨
Wonderfully weird stuff. Way ahead of its time with its use of sampling. I don't think that many people realize how influential krautrock was to the music that followed. Perhaps this makes sense given that the genre, like its cousin prog, was defined by its experimentation. This album was a fun listen and one I'll be returning to. I like weird music.
finally an album on this list i've never heard of. loved it!
what vulfpeck could have sounded like if they didnt go for the safest sound imaginable. 4.5
Hilarious. Thoroughly enjoyable, will likely listen again but it was crazy in parts.
(88/100)
So fucking cool and just exudes true creativity. I can’t get along with all the choices here but I notice a lot of stuff Geordie Greep might’ve taken inspiration from. His voice is really true to himself and I love all the variety of instrumentation overall. Nothing is precisely my style but I really appreciate all the artistry within each song and second of the album.
I had never heard of this one and it was exactly what you would expect for an album with this cover. Super weird, kind of disjointed, really uneven. But it all kind of works for some reason. I would by no means call this a great album, maybe not even a good one, but I am happy to have heard it today. I feel like it was a very successful attempt at experimental music, especially for 1979. I listened to this twice today and though I may not ever listen to it again, if I ever see it in the wild I'll definitely pick it up just because, well, how could you not? 3.5/5
74/100. An interesting first solo step outside of Can. You can really hear Czukay stretching out here, playing with ideas that feel looser and more playful than what he was doing in a band setting. Not flawless, but creative and adventurous in a way that makes it a rewarding listen.
Unhinged. That's how I'd describe this album. I'm a big fan of Can. I discovered them in my teens, as a Radiohead fan, after hearing their cover of "The Thief". After diving into their back catalogue, it became very clear that no two Can songs sound the same. Or even similar. All of that applies to Holger's post-Can solo album too. There are only four songs on this album, but they're all completely unique. I don't even know if you can call these "songs". Ranging in duration from 5 minutes to 15, they are meandering explorations in sonic weirdness. This is early experimentation in tape looping and sampling, and for a record that was made in 1979, for some sections you could imagine it being a recent release from the likes of Four Tet (especially "Persian Love"). It kicks off with "Cool in the Pool", the moment of peak nuttiness on the album. But, by the time we're halfway through "Oh Lord, Give Us More Money", my bemusement has changed to intrigue. Midway through "Persian Love", I'm sold. Unhinged, chaotic, messy, and intensely weird. But also hypnotic, melodic, extremely enjoyable, and never ever boring.
Better than expected
This is what Geese thinks they are
New to me. Interesting, worth paying attention to, music.
I didn't understand this except for how I did. Anyway I think I liked it.
Maybe more like 3.5-7, because parts were more eh. But overall chill, would be willing to try more
Good
Love the weird vibes. Giving primus if they were a 1970s German rock band
This was fun. Quirky. During side two I found myself getting a bit impatient, but side one was fantastic. Also, I pretty influential I can hear a lot of 80s bands (like Big Audio Dynamite) that would take these ideas and run with them. As much as I love Can, I'm a bit surprised I never checked out any of their solo efforts. Although, now that I've looked at the credits, this is basically a Can album in all but name. Cool!
By god! They did it! They made the German version of Eno during his transition from rock to ambient! And it slaps! “Oh Lord Give Us More Money” is an absolutely wild track that dips in and out of lucidity, with just about every curveball possible thrown at you — maybe even a knuckleball or two as well. This song is totally worth its 13 minute runtime. And it’s kinda cool too! I feel like a lot of these noodly songs can fall victim to being a little geeky, but this one is genuinely cool. As referenced before, I can’t help but hear that chunky Eno bassline in almost every one of these songs, especially the first two. The halfway point of “Hollywood Symphony” gets things to a really interesting point again with all those vocals fading in and out. Then the syncopated, choppy drums + guitars at 9 minutes start going crazy. A little active listening disclaimer should go here. As great as this album is for background music in a record store, I’d argue it’s even better if you can fully immerse your attention in every little detail that whirls by. 4/5, I’m a sucker for this little genre and time in the ‘experimental’ zeitgeist.
Mixture of sounds and tastes. Reminds a little bit of Can with experimental touch, but with the add of world music. I can see where Tom Tom Club got their sound, but here we have more flavours and more adventurous approach.
I can see why some people wouldn’t like the album. Very experimental and “throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks”. I found myself enjoying the album a lot! I think there is some amazing creativity and musical skill. Great drums and guitar really support the wide range of other sounds and elements. Pleasantly surprised with this one.
On a first listen, I was a bit disappointed - maybe I had set the bar too high for an ex-Can member. But on a second listen I started to enjoy this more... pretty novel for its time with tasteful use of samples, good rhythm, all in all it is very interesting! I'll round it up to a 4. Or no, it IS a 4 (I think).
I weird little album with some stretches of really good psychedelic music. It sounds ahead of its time in many ways.
This album starts a bit wonky but it gets good! Certainly more accessible in a helpful way compared to the Can releases.
Sounds like Shaft and Les Claypools daddy took acid then had an orgy whilst on a yoga retreat. It’s Good, but you have to be in the mood for it.
not sure why but i liked it
good but didn’t love the last track
That was something I had never heard before but makes me want ti dig deeper into Holger Czukay's output.
COOL
First three tracks I enjoyed. Fourth track was a little out there but still wasn't bad. Some really cool guitar work. Definitely an album I'll need to give multiple listens to really catch everything in it. I like the mix as well.
If someone put a gun to my head a said “name a member of Can,” I would never have formed the syllables hol-ger-czu-kay in a million guesses. I had to admit I don’t know much about Can except they have some awesome tracks out there! So, Holger… I gotta say, I loved this album! Weird and funky jams. My kids complained a bit, but not as much as I thought they could. The movie samples were more distracting than additive though.
Fun
7/10 It's different. I enjoyed it lied in the light of the winter sun as I relaxed on New Years Day after a very late night. Ambient and rambling, but with lots of ideas, some of which work better than others
I was initially put off by the opening track but then found this a quite interesting album. Pioneering music in both ambient electronica and world music influence. The forerunner perhaps of Eno and David Byrne. Could also see the influence on later music such as Peter Gabriel and Tears for Fears. Also a great one to try out stereo separation on headphones. 3 or 4, but settled on 4 for experimentation.
This was a lot more fun and far out than a lot of the other experimental albums out there. This one was actually music? In the sense that it was listenable and enjoyable
Tv girl vibes
I can't really tell if the actual samples here are clever or not. I'm leaning not. The actual instrumentation is really good. This album is recorded and produced very well. I would rate it higher, but the "experimental" samples do detract from the overall experience. I get that the samples are kind of the point, but they just didn't land as much as the tight guitar work and restrained but solid percussion.
a lot of fun! Kraftwerk meets Zappa.
Saw this and dreaded it based on the art, the listeners and the number of tracks. Dumb I know. This was a ride that I will take again. Weird sounds but captivating and listened to it twice!
As I’ve mentioned, I really like experimental music. This is no exception. Fantastic electronic rock and avant-garde music. Will be listening to more.
Went into this with an open mind as I didn't expect a pioneering example of samples to be so smooth. That first track is a great introduction, it's groovy, strong early '70s energy that's gonna last all throughout. It wasn't until the last track, Hollywood Symphony, that I understood the album. It's like an audio representation of that moment of cinema. Hollywood Symphony though, that's a trip. What drugs was this man on? It's so overwhelming, but clearly beautiful. It strongly reminds me of an acid trip in a busy city. And the way he mixed that volume, mad genius. Immersive and annoying but for a reason. 3.7/5
Cool album that u had no idea existed. All for this type of stuff
Hell yeah! This is what I’m talking about. A Can side project that’s weird and funky and proggy. More of this!
I’m generally not the biggest fan of tracks with a runtime of >10 minutes and I hadn’t ever heard of Czukay, so I went into this with relatively low expectations – but this album was a pleasant surprise.
A good listen and one I hope to come back to again. Kept my interest throughout (although I am on a 12 hour flight so it's not too difficult).
Very creative album and was surprised I hadn't heard of Holger before. Reminds me of Herbie Hancock. 13 minute songs, tons of different riffs and melodies, and very out there. I liked it and will keep it in mind as best of it's class.
My first Can-related solo project. I dug a lot of it. Jazzy, electronic, experimental but without ever losing its groove…danke shein.
Weird one, but not in a bad way. A good mix of experimental and approachable material blended here. Sometimes fun, sometimes out there, sometimes just making you think. Cool In The Pool is so god damn quirky (and fun), but WILL get stuck in your ear really quickly. Persian Love was the track I liked the least, and even that had its moments that pulled you in and made you pay attention. This definitely merits multiple listens.
Experimental and weird but I was in the mood for that today. The long songs never felt like a bore and the album had enough variance despite being 4 songs. Definitely a hidden gem Rating: 4.3
This is crazy! In the best of ways! I had a couple of laughs listening to this. Holger Czukay was a new name for me. Will definitely check out more of his stuff. 4/5
To only be Cool in the pool, always. Loved the little grooves he finds
So weird.
Another weird ass album but I was rocking with it.
This was nuts and i loved it
This was quite a cool album actually, very interesting. I enjoyed listening to this. Oh Lord, Give us Money, Persian Love and Hollywood symphony stood out to me most on my first listen, but the first song actually has a lot to it. I don't know whether I'd want any of these songs in my database, but I did enjoy the experience of this album. I could be pushed on the latter three songs though. 4/5 stars.
? ok co-gründer von can, "leet's get cool, together" mit German accent, nice. c
What a surprise. Quirky and delightful, will be listening to this one for a while. Didn't realize he was a part of Can, so will need to revisit that record as well.
It's cool in the pool
I love Can, but I've never heard this album from Holger and I loved it. The opening track alone is worth the listen.
I thought I was gonna hate this but it was great craic. Bloody weird at times but good weird. Top Track - Persian Love
4/5
This guy walked so others could run. I liked the walking better myself.
Delightfully weird.
Good discovery, solid 4 stars
That was really weird. I made it through. And then I started listening to it again. And then I looked him up. And now I've downloaded a whole bunch of his other albums and works that he did with other people.
I was fully expecting to hate this, and didn’t. Not as totally zany and off the wall as it potentially could have been, for better or worse, but it ended up being a pretty interesting album that I was into.
4/5 - I needed to hear this because it was delightfully weird, and I never would come across it otherwise. Each track here is pretty different from the others, but they all hit in their own way. I loved the early electronic sampling sounds. I'd definitely check out more by Czukay.
Never heard of this artist before. Album was a pleasant surprise, spacey funk jazz. The organ was a bit cartoonish to me in parts but overall really enjoyed this one.
Freaky but Funky
Somewhat delighted and a little confused, I give this album a four-star credit because I think its sweet weirdness will grow on me over time even though it hasn’t clicked yet
It's a bit mad I like it, can definitely see it's inspiration on Brian Eno later on
4/5. And this is how you do experimental music. Just a solid collection of sampled sounds and instrumentation into ideas and songs. They feel incomplete yet fully realized at the same time. It's not a perfect album but it does go pretty hard most of the time. A solid listen and definitely one I am going to revisit. Best Song: Cool In The Pool, Oh Lord Give Us More Money, Hollywood Symphony
I have to listen to this again, its so strange and has allot going on. Who the hell is this guy?
Good vibes. Persian love and Hollywood especially good
Would not be a first choice to listen to, but was completely different. Will listen to more of his stuff just out of curiosity.
I wasn't totally sold on Cool In The Pool, where I found the vocals a little too comedic, but the other tracks made up for it for me. Generally good stuff, although I prefer the straight up krautrock of Can. A solid four.
This album is weird and I love it. The songs are all so great and the sampling is extremely creative. All four songs on the record are very unique pieces of music. 4/5
I’m not sure why this was on this list and I’m not sure how to describe it, but I did enjoy it quite a bit. It feels experimental in a fun/silly way instead of trying to be something, so stays surprising and playful and fun
Fun and oddball gem
Interesting a little bizzare to listen to, lot of nice samples
Super fun.
lots of funky and mind bending sounds and grooves, and the early use of sampling is both very cool and very modern sounding, regrettably Czukay took a look at stereotypical prog-rock vocals and said "these aren't annoying enough"
This is clearly ahead of its time. It's experimental, unpredictable, and has a lot of strange charm. It’s an interesting listen overall, with moments that feel surprisingly modern given its release date. At times, though, Czukay leans a little too heavily on the synthesizers, and the horn on the first track, my lord, it can be a bit much. Still, there’s something fascinating about how he pieces it all together, even if it doesn’t always land.
Weird. Good, but *weird*
Interesting, liked it more than I expected to.
This is one of those great albums this list throws up, I would never have listened to this if not. It's so absurd and quirky but actually pretty catchy. I enjoyed it but not really sure why! I want to be Cool in the Pool
This is weird and I've never seen or heard of it before. It's done by someone from Can, though, which is Stephen Malkmus' favorite band! So this should be cool! I'm reading this wiki page and it seems to be sort of niche and avant garde. We'll see. Cool in the Pool: Quite a lot groovier than I thought it would be, since it was described as "avant garde". This is a lot of fun, sort of trippy... but it's especially fun because he's got such a remarkable German accent. I don't usually think of Germans as the type to make goofy songs like this. The sort of chaos at the end, with the sampling(?) and high voices and whatnot is also a lot of fun. I actually like it a lot. Oh Lord, Give Us More Money: Lovely and sort of romantic beginning, like what I'd expect to hear if I were in some hot, humid, Middle Eastern suite. Definitely a bit of a step up from the simple groove of Cool in the Pool. I feel that I sort of hear Stephen Malkmus a bit here, especially his solo work (Face the Truth could definitely have borrowed a bit from here, and I LOVE that album). It becomes less rhythmic and more spontaneous and sorta unpredictable over time. It's still interesting, though. I like it when it picks up and becomes a little quicker near the end. The vocals were cool. Sort of ambient music to do work to, not so much for intense listening. Persian Love: Doesn't sound like English to me, but maybe a sample of some South Asian or Middle Eastern clip? Maybe farsi since it's called Persian love. Sort of nice music to listen to if I were on an island or basking in the sun. Hard to believe this is the same album as the first song. Hollywood Symphony: This is more what I'd expected from the album. A little freaky. QUITE freaky. I I I I I I feel so beautiful now! I kinda like it though. All in all, a pretty cool album. I'll give it a good 4.3. Love Stephen Malkmus and see the influence.
This is the exact type of album why I joined the One Album A Day site. A weird-sounding but still fascinating funky and experimental record. I would have never listened to this record without this site.
very Krauty
From what I’ve read he bridged a gap between pop and avant-garde. The songs are the weirdest shit I have heard so far! Love that. The first one was so hot - temperature speaking - it felt like the hottest summer day. The second one - about 13 minutes long - has almost no lyrics and reminded my of a crowded place, with all people thinking, saying or screaming something. It was loud and quiet at the same time. I’m not going to write about next two, but I’m sure it’ll be a great experience to listen to them. I just have to go start getting ready for my first ever run (willing) in my life!!!! But it is definitely a four just because of how unique it is!!!
Wow, this is a really cool one, just found out how important Czukay was for crafting can's iconic sound, i used to remember damo as the face of can, but this man really had some special gifts when it came to melody and rythm, that he just stole that spot for me. There might be a couple of odd moments in these large compositions that throw me off a little, but im nothing short of amazed by this, i should re-listen to it soon, because it fucking rocks.
Very ethereal and strange, but in a good way.
very weird/unique
oh now this, is weird. in a good way. this album feels like sitting in the sun, sipping on a cocktail that consists of some weird ingredient concoction but surprisingly works well together. def will have this album play in the background this summer
This album crawled so Khraungbin could run many, many years later.
This was perfect. Right on the line of insane and danceable.
Finally
i thought that this was one of if not the first album that deserved to be on this list for both its quality and what it accomplished in music.
holger czukay? i hardly know her czukay Fav song: Persian Love
krautrock divertido
Interesting. Sometimes jazzy, sometimes like a film score. I enjoyed it, change of pace and tone from what I usually choose to listen to
Interesting, not quite as coherent as some its krautrock contemporaries.
new to me and I like it!
On Movies, Holger krafts a cinematic mood short of a cinematic event. In the end, that's a good thing, since high concept would turn this record, a treasure of funk/jazz/rock, into ersatz unbelievability. Boasting four tracks, Movies is aptly plural. It's a remarkably eclectic amalgam of sounds and ideas: the very German 'Cool in the Pool,' the John McLaughlin meets Pink Floyd 'Oh Lord, Give Us More Money,' the pukka 'Persian Love,' the synth-energized 'Hollywood Symphony.' It's a soundtrack, but to nothing whole. Its sampling of movie snippets foreshadows hip-hop production à la MF Doom, and tho it's a bit slow at times, and a bit cool in a nonessential way, I not only commend Holger's creativity, I think it's a damn good album.
It has layers, dude. LAYERS.
Though this was great, maybe not as good as Tago Mago, but I appreciate the experimentation! I thought that Brian Eno and David Byrne were the first to do this sort of thing, interesting to see how this would have influenced them.
I lay awake in bed, a pool of sweat surrounds me as I toss and turn, unable to get the images out of my mind. The voices out of my mind. The same dream for months. I fall asleep. I hear a man humming. I hear a man walking. He's coming towards me. I'm sweating. I hear a strange riff, but there is no band around. The man is in front of me now. I'm sweating again. It's so hot. He speaks up, "Let's get hot", his voice is abnormal. "On the dancing spot" he continues. I respond, "Hot-" "Oh, is it hot?", he interrupts, sarcastically, "Wow, man." What's his problem? Suddenly, a pool appears, the man sings "Then let's get cool in the pool! Oh, let's get cooool!" I hear the laughs from below. I hear the sounds of evil. I wake up. Was that a nightmare? Who was that man? Was he from another world? Was he a vision? A by-product of schizophrenia? No, that was Holger Czukay.
This doesn't sound like anything I've heard before. The songs are pretty long but it doesn't feel that way. There is something weird that happens every few bars or so. Shimmery guitars, synths and strange samples. Even the vocals are good. It's all pretty wild. I'm glad to have been exposed to this.
this was super weird but in a great way!! just really all over the place. kinda zappa-y at times, not musically but stylistically. with the spoken word and the long songs with many different sections. definitely worth checking out
I like his band. The album is very fun and something new. Very interesting to listen to!
This was cool, would like to delve into krautrock a bit more cos im a big prog fan by and large
This was so weird and cool. Really enjoyed it.
Super fun first track
I think it's fair to say that I was more interested by this album when reading its Wikipedia entry than I was enthused. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It's all approachable and, actually quite enjoyable.
A wild dream: full of free associations, digressions and changes of direction. Incredible drumming anchors montaged flights of fancy, playful synth parts, audio samples and crystal clear guitar leads. It has a prog feel to it, but more patient and willing to settle in a groove and let the drums work their trance magic, opening your mind to the collage piled on top. Extremely cool by the pool.
This one was weird but enjoyable for some reason! Good instrumentals and decent vocal work. 'Persian Love' was my fave.
My tastes must be expanding because I didn't find this as annoying as I thought I would after scrolling through the comment section. The instrumentals were really fun and quirky, though I did find his vocals off-putting, he simply did not sing well at all (maybe this was an artistic choice but if so—I did not like it). Other than that, I will say I enjoyed this album a whole lot and would listen to it again. 4 stars
Oh, this is fun, a change of pace. I like it, I think I'd listen again.
Pretty good! Didn’t love track 3 but everything else is stellar. Maybe I should give another shot to Can.
I quite liked this, the textures and variety of sounds were interesting but also made great background noise for working. I particularly liked the one with the dog's "ow-ow-ow" in the exact rhythm of the percussion. It was funny and clever. Persian Love was great too.
Enthralling
As baffling as it is fun
Enjoyable wackiness
Bonkers fun weird lovely
I completely forgot to add my review for this one, (I listened to it on the day our group had it). It is beautifully bonkers!
Weird, experimental and silly kraut rock, easily digestible for (most) listeners. The songs feel a bit rambling at times, but Holger is certainly some sort of mad genius. With this album, he took my already good mood, and took it to a good/silly/lighthearted mood, which I can't complain about.
After a run of so so albums it's refreshing to hear something different and experimental.
There's a lot going on on this one, but the bulk of the album is stellar psychedelic jazz-rock fusion on two long tracks. There's also a Middle Eastern-influenced track. The first song is pretty wacky but everything is great after that. Lots to dig into and lose yourself in.
Now this is my kind of music Take the inventiveness of the krautrock era of music Germany and add a healthy dose of lightheartedness and playfulness to it, it makes what would other wise be experimental psychedelia be about wanting to chill out in the sun or appreciate some Persian music. All these soundscapes just get me in the right places so I just can't but enjoy this one. And ofc, this was made by one of the guys in Can so, awesome
Nothing special, but it's got some very nice synthwork. Solid 4 Stars.
As I'm listening I can't stop giggling picturing this as some sort of early-season Simpsons takeoff on the Germans taking over the Springfield nuclear plant or the "I must get back to Dance centrum in Stuttgart in time to see Kraftwerk - HEY FUN BOIZ - GET A ROOM!" lines. Has a bit of an absurdist alt-early-Roxy sound to it. It's ridiculous ... but why do I kind of love this... Wacky/trippy/beyond unusual but actually unlike much of Czukay's previous incarnation in Can I like this a lot more - although I'm docking a point for a lot of "Persian Love" - it's just that middle-eastern sound I don't love (having said that, i love the ARP and some of the guitar work is reminiscent of Zappa / Watermelon in Easter Hay). Weird keeper - too many of the weird albums here are just fkd-up weird but this is oddly listenable and fun. 8/10 4 stars.
Can't say no to some experimentation, this album excelled at that. From the minute it started I could hear the impact this record has on the way production is handled today. The clever sampling throughout the album was fantastic, and the electronic instrumentation was fun to listen to. While I'm sure a lot of people struggle to get into this because of the lack of lyrics, I think there is some great stuff on here despite that, and I'm someone who prefers lyrical stuff over instrumental tracks. Rating: Really Great (Strong ☆☆☆☆) Favorite Track: Cool In The Pool.
mmggmhmmmm yeessss moreee gimme more experimental, more eccentric, more whimsical, more zappaesque stuff yeesss
Kedvenc/Favourite: Oh Lord, Give Us More Money Nem az a százszor meghallgatós, kicsit nehezen emészthető, de jó. Érdekes a koncepció, meglepődtem, hogy '79-es. Elképesztő érzék kellett hozzá, hogy így össze legyen rakva. Örülök, hogy meghallgattam. It's not one of those albums you listen to a hundred times, a little hard to digest, but good. The concept is interesting, I was surprised it was from '79. It must have taken incredible skill to put it all together in this way. I'm glad I listened to it.
When we're talking in term of avant garde music, this one is deceptively light and balances that fine line between pop and noise. Thouroughly enjoyable!
What a breath of fresh air on this list! I'd heard of him as one of the founding fathers of Krautrock, but never listened to any of his solo stuff. Glad I did!
3.5. Rounded up for album actually being original and something worthy of being on this list. Give me more of things im unfamiliar with and grab my attention. Albums that fell through the cracks, so to speak
very quirky album, really enjoyed it
Interesting
kinda awesome
Intricately layered bonkers mad shit. Jazz funk prog proto-electronica. Sharp and clean but packed with detailed flourishes. Loving it.
This was so strange... but I had so much fun with it! A total discovery for me! I mean, this project is becoming a big part of my working days, because I'm listening to so many albums I didn't know anything about! And then I get to revisit the ones I've always liked ;-)
This was cool. I love it when I get something completely from left field. Never heard of this in any way, and was fully engaged for the duration. Felt like it was probably breaking a lot of ground on the sampling front, so I can see how it may hold some important significance. Regardless, worthy!
I enjoyed the mood of this overall, particularly some of the movie dialogue sampling and the Iranian vocalist. The woozier parts work better for me than the more funky bits, and I think Czukay's own vocals on Cool in the Pool are not the best start to the album. Czukay's previous band Can are stronger in this regard. I think this is the sort of thing where you may end up giving points for its historic impact in helping to introduce electronic music and particular sampling into rock, which is now very familiar (and something I personally first encountered with The Avalanches c. 2001). Probably won't play regularly but glad that I was prompted to try it.
Great album! I loved his work with Can. So, I was really awesome to hear some of his solo work. “Cool In The Pool” had a cool, mad scientist on vacation vibe. “Persian Love” was also interesting. I listened to this album on the way to work. I think next time I listen to this, I need to be sitting in my chair with the volume turned up just to catch everything this album has to offer
Feels like the list got it right today - loads of fun discovering this.
Very interesting and adventurous. This kind of thing definitely looks forward to like, Talk Talk’s evolution and otherwise dreamy, progressive pop composition. Some bits I did not like — for instance, the first song. The rest of it I thought was very listenable, and I’ll be going back to it. If it’s a must listen it’s #79 lol
Delightfully weird and different. Actually liked it quite a bit.
I liked this, it seemed cool
Kinda bonkers in a cool way. Bumping it up one pioneer point for early sampling and radio-as-instrument use. Probably still gonna go to Can when I want something bonkers in this particular way, but glad to have listened. music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)
This was a ride. Maybe it’s because it’s been a kind of bad stretch on here these last couple weeks, but I felt very In To This. Cool in the Pool was vaguely city poppish, right? Pretty interesting. I’d go back to this one.
Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. Not a big fan of Can, generally.
A lot going on here. I really liked the first 3 tracks, they had a great combination of samples, whimsy, and little interesting call and response riffs, all being kind of chaotic but still cohesive. The 4th track didn't do as much for me and seemed a little too meandering, but overall this was a pretty fun record. 3.5/5
Was really surprised by this one. I like it a lot. I listened to it like 8-9 times already. 4.25/5
Pretty solid. B-
Whoa, that was crazy. But was it cool? I don’t know. Not as cool as Can, anyway. But I love getting an experimental and controversial album I didn’t even know existed.
This was super interesting the whole way through. Cool In The Pool sounded like Talking Heads. The sound collages seem like what The Avalanches or MF DOOM would be doing twenty years later. I will definitely be listening to more from this guy. Favorite songs were Cool In The Pool, Oh Lord, Give Us More Money, and Hollywood Symphony.
Interesting
Fantastic stuff. A true musical innovator
This is pretty good. I feel like I prefer the first disc of Tago Mago (which I got yesterday) to this, but there’s a good amount of not great stuff on that album, so this has it beat.
What in the experimental, sample heaven hell is this? I've barely scratched the surface of CAN as a band; I don't know if I'm ready for Czukay's full control over the music. I think if you're willing to accept it, this record has a lot to offer. But it is not entirely accessible. It's very silly firstly. With sound bytes and random left turns consuming the vast majority of tunes, you're not listening to gain a feel for the groove so much as you are just along for the ride, waiting to see what could possibly happen next. And I suppose that's the point. Not in a hurry to revisit this, but it was a total blast; weird, trippy and everything in between.
Auspiciously avant-garde, Czukay offers four fleeting glimpses into wonderfully strange worlds that blur the lines between music, found audio, and sound art.
4.5 stars. it sounds completely unique . I cant imagine what effort it took doing it all analogue. Half a star off because I dont know if i will ever listen to it again.
7.5/10 Extremely interesting, and an incredible turnaround after the first track, which was really, really terrible. After that I thought this was a certain one star. Then the rest of the album was brilliant. Avant art pop, music concrete, samples and textures. Extremely well done, even if the (non sampled) vocals were a weak point. Best: Persian Love
Very cool album. Wacky yet groovy songs that explored a lot of different places but never got tiring
This is a pretty good album, but like many avant-garde and experimental records, it took me about three listens to fully take it in. The atmosphere is surreal and dreamlike, with layered sounds and unconventional structures blending krautrock, world music samples, electronic, and ambient elements. The album balances a subtle quirkiness—thanks to its playful samples and unexpected transitions—with a more serious and self-aware tone. While it has an ambient feel overall, there are also funk-inspired basslines and spoken word sections that add variety. What really stood out to me was the sense of space and the innovative use of tape looping, sampling, and production techniques throughout the album. It’s a record that grew on me, and it’s one I’ll definitely revisit in the future.
Good songs to vibe out to. Don't have to think too hard. Just go with the flow.
Incredible. A lot of the things I love about Radiohead—pushing it but keeping it melodic and often beautiful. Right now I’m thinking 4.2 but this is the kind of music that has room to grow.
Very fun, very cool in the pool. The drumming is impeccable on this album. I didn’t care for Oh Lord Give Us More Money.
weird but i like it :-)
Évoque parfois les débuts de la musique de jeux vidéo ; précurseur de l'électronique
A bit of a funky thing. Pretty solid listen.
Bam, first a Can album and then a Holger Czukay (strong contender for best named artist so far) right after. Movies is much more accessible than Tago Mago and equal parts more enjoyable, while being incredibly ahead of its' time. 'Cool in the Pool' might be one of the most uncool things I have ever heard - I dig.
This album is weird. But it’s also cool. It’s like a 3.5 - no real complaints. I don’t think I’ll revisit, but I probably wouldn’t mind if I had to.
Meandering in a somewhat freeing way. I'd love to know how some of these instrumentations were captured. A lot of sampling? The Brian Eno collaborations make me think so. Another product of its geopolitical position. Again wish I could do half stars
Hell, I really enjoyed this and the fact that I had no idea of where it was going next. Listened to it 4 times in total and still have no idea. Fun, experimental and just the tonic when it all gets a bit "samey"
This was great! What a fun discovery. I loved Cool In The Pool. Such a funky, jazzy, interesting little tune to start off my day. The remaining three tracks were top-notch as well. I've saved another Czukay album to listen to another day. A very solid 4 from me.
First listen through I thought it was decent, if a bit mad at times. By my second listen I was convinced this is really good and definitely worthy of a few chances. Gets better each time, especially given at first I thought there’s no way this would get released if he wasnt in Can. Persian Love and Hollywood Symphony were the highlights for me, but Cool in the Pool gets better each listen
Not really sure what it was all about, but it is albums like this that belong on the list in my opinion. Really different and creative. Not too sure I'd go back for the full album, but I was humming along to Persian Love.
If every British New Wave record on this list got replaced by a weird fucking album like this, we could have had world peace back in 2008 (the year of the green wolf). Noticed that Czukay's voice sounds awfully similar to Kevin Barnes from "Of Montreal". More CAN is always a good thing. Awesome.
A pretty interesting album but no song fully stood out.
Unique combination of traditional "rhythmic" music mixed with experimental and found sounds. Enjoyable while still being "out there" a bit.
Looking at the cover made me think this was likely some country/folk album, but then i click onto the wikipedia. "Experimental rock", the guy is from germany and it's the 70s, "his first solo album since leaving Can". Ah ok, so turns out this is going to be some super interesting weird shit instead. Delightful.
Dreamy. Proggy. Jammy. Synthy. Groovy. Edgy. Pokemony. MF-Doomy. This is just straight up cool. Spotify says 2015, but this was released in 1976, post-Can. Led me to Kraut-Rock, and I wonder which Kraut album will feature on this list. This album is fucking awesome. Made my body move in its own way. Felt like a slinky trapped in a hamster ball floating down a lazy river of rainbow water. A little tiny gem for sure. Fav track: Hollywood Symphony
Very weird clearly some strange men but I thought it was silly and enjoyable
Bizarrely enjoyable
++: Cool in the Pool +: Oh Lord, Give Us More Money, Persian Love, Hollywood Symphony 7,9/10
Incredible display of production techniques from live recordings, and sampling to electronic sounds, especially for the 70s. The genre blending was really exciting. Persian Love had me feeling like Jimmy Buffett was Under the Sea off the coasts of India. While I overall wished for a little more cohesion across the entire album and am not the biggest fan of 15 minute songs, the musicality is top notch and it's full of surprises in being able to transition from moment to moment seamlessly. Even if it feels like it doesn't fully land anywhere, the ride was enjoyable throughout. One of the more exciting discoveries of this list so far.
This absolutely starts out as part of the soundtrack to a bad teen comedy, being the incidental music that plays when the creepy German hostel owner encourages "European style" swimming. Fortunately, that's only the case for the first track and it gets considerably better as the platter spins on. By track 3 we start to get influences from the Indian subcontinent, and that's a good thing. I won't lie, I prefer Can, but this will probably get a few listens - perhaps not the first track though.
Started out interesting, then....
I only knew Cool in the pool, but the rest of the record is so much better!
This is pretty good, I like to be cool in the pool. Certainly interesting and fresh sounding even today.
Sehr interessantes Basiswerk der elektronischen Musik aus 1979. Experiment gelungen. Konzeptionell gutes und aus der Nachbarstadt Cologne. Wiederhören um es zu verstehen und geniessen wir empfohlen.
Consistently interesting and the performances were great. This was a nice surprise!
For German “electronic,” this was surprisingly up there with my taste. Great background music while I was coding.
I loved this one a lot. Maybe even more than some Can.
this was... wild, weird, fun, annoying. :D
This is one of those that reminds me of why I am doing this. Never heard of it before. Never will listen to it again, but glad I have this once.
This was cool, something totally different that I'd never heard of before.
Rounding up but this album is pretty fun. Takes you all over for a nice ride.
Finally, something weird that is also entertaining. This is an album you will either love or hate, but goodness me, is it an experience. I fall into the camp of 'surprisingly enjoyed the weirdness'. It is just the most or the top krautrock I have heard so far. It is ridiculous, it is wacky, it takes you on a very confusing aural adventure, but it put a smile on my face to the point I feel like I have to give it 4 stars for both effort, and the joy it gave me.
Well... This is definitely something else entirely different. It scratches an itch I didn't know I had. Eclectic and full of possibilities.
Easy listening. Enjoyable album and would listen to again
Never heard of this artist, or this album, or any of this material, but I liked it and thought it was a good listen.
Weird but oddly great. It was like pre-techno if that makes sense. Definitely not mad that I had to listen to this.
did not expect to love this but I did! gonna have to check out can
I was a little scared at first because of the first couple lines of the first song…but I actually ended up liking this. A little short but very groovy.
Not exactly what I expected, but interesting and diverting nonetheless.
I love Can, and had no idea Holger did solo stuff. This is so delightfully weird.
You know what I enjoyed this. Saw a straight line from this to LCD Soundsystem
Very pleasantly surprised by this artist that I’ve never heard of! The music is sorta ethereal in the way that it’s very jammy and formless, with a variety of sounds in each song.
So strange! But I liked it.
Quite charming and varied, with so many different sounds at play. A great example of why this project is brilliant as now I'm excited to listen to some of Can's music whom I had never heard of prior to this. The tone jumps all over the place but always remains interesting and heartfelt oddly enough. 07/06/24
I had a good time listening to this. I was giggling so much at the zany random sounds that Tatiania would yell at me from two rooms away telling me to stop.
Bonkers vibes from the big man. Can elements, sampling, global sounds, surreal vocals and other effects - all in all a compelling listen.
My cup of tea this
Art rock, krautrock. Rhythmic and warm, but very weird. It was cool and experimental, was not what I expected. Not super familiar with the genres but it was great. Ambient, rock, and soundscapes all in one album. Not a huge fan of having a 40 minute album spread between only 4 songs. Might revisit. 4/5
I quite loved the opening of this album with the quirky "Cool in the Pool." I was not surprised to learn that Holger Czukay had been a founder of Can as I listened to the rest. It's not something easy to describe, but it was worth listening to.
Okay, I could work to this. It was not amazing to me, but maybe that is because we have heard such a variety of electronic music, and maybe it was not as cool in the pool as some of the others for me.
This is a wack-a-doo change of pace that was most welcome after several uninspiring selections. Weird German fun!
