Reviews (page 3 of 7)

very experimental but funky and cool. Didnt get bored once. nice listen

👍 little German boy is experimenting

I love love love this. Seeing the origins of sampling and plunderphonics my favorite genre makes me so so happy and it’s jazz electronic fusion is so interesting. I feel a new arc coming

Rate it. Does make me want to soundtrack a movie

we’re back in the Can Universe with: MOVIES After Tago Mago & Phaedra, the other German 70s albums this month, my bias- sorry, Vorurteile- expected more sinister, heavy overtures. My mistake, Czukay’s solo outing is cheeky & airy, though I suppose sometimes laden with prog grandeur. I enjoyed Movies’s approach to what would later be known as plunderphonics, even as it harkens back to the sound collages of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper & the White Album. At the same time, I might appreciate it for what it represents in musical evolution more than for its songs. Though there are many interesting directions taken, the song lengths are- surprise, surprise- testing, the samples inscrutable or just absurd, and the vocals sometimes *out of pocket*. Yet I’m having more fun in the 2nd listen, which I didn’t think I needed so soon after the first. A flawed, messy experiment, and yet I wouldn’t have it any other way. Maybe because it sounds like how my brain feels after 700-800 random albums. HL: “Persian Love”, “Hollywood Symphony” April 29, 2024

Surprisingly amazing jawn

Woah, I thought I was going to hate this, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit! It was great music to walk to and kind of space out during. A lot of art rock that I've heard has been quite unpleasant to listen to, but there was never any moment where I wasn't enjoying this.

A new one for me. A mind blending and genre busting output over four girthy songs. Something to revisit but a pleasant first experience.

New album for me, not in the same league as Can, but sounded great for most part and with all the innovative sampling I can see why it was included in the list.

Regis was a surprising good time! Never heard of this guy, or Can, or Krautrock for that matter. It felt like a very modern album with the world influence and sampling. Very cool!

Completely new music for me. Love the horn in Cool in the pool.

Well this is a weird looking album on the face of it. 4 songs spanning 40 minutes with two longer songs making up the bulk of its weight. Cool in the Pool puts this right out there with an eclectic stomp filled with all sorts of quirky instrumental intrusions (trumpet, accordion, etc.) and unique vocals. Brings the likes of Zappa and Talking Heads to mind. The former for the quirkiness and the latter for the synth heavy funky rhythms. Loving Persian Love out of the gate. Hollywood Symphony is a spacey, drawn out, proggy affair. Not by any means my most careful listen, but I was really into this album throughout. Quirky, for sure, but in a great way. This is a (at times goofy) prog/jazz/electronic-rock album that has some really awesome spacious/psych elements. A lot to enjoy here with the highlights for me residing in the back half with Persian Love and Hollywood Symphony. Love the crisp production and guitar tone that he is able to evoke. At times it felt Garcia-esq in the best possible ways. This is a very strong 4 lacking the (as Jackson would say) chutzpah to earn a 5.

I have no idea what I just listened to but I absolutely loved it! When it started off I thought I was in for some weird shit (which I was) but it ended up being totally baller. This was an experimental album that I could get down to not just because of the weirdness, but the actually instrumentals were awesome. Listening through Oh Lord, Give Us More Money made this album really flirt with a 5 with the awesome synth/guitar combo. But the rest of the album was just a touch too weird where I don't think I can give this a 5, mainly because I don't think I will ever listen to the whole album again. I went back and listened to Cool in the Pool again and I think that might be the goofiest song I have ever heard. Very high 4

Cool in the Pool is an awesome name and I love the beginning of this. Lots of sounds happening, but it works for me. This is some experimental shit. Guitar works and synth on Oh Lord, Give Us More Money is some good stuff for me ears. Random cat meow in there. These guitars are wigglin'! The beginning of Hollywood Symphony reminds me of some Pink Floyd mixed with Blues for Allah Grateful Dead. Good stuff. Damn reading more about this guy I didn't realize he was in Can. This was a surprisingly awesome album. I don't know if I'm pushing it into the 5 territory but it's certainly a high ass 4.

I am pleasantly surprised. This was some seriously cool experimental krautrock. Colour me impressed. I have not listened to Can, or any krautrock at all for that matter until now. I can be sure that I will rectify this soon. A mix of ambient, rock, and at some points comedy, this album, despite having only four songs, manages to be rather diverse and very enjoyable.

This is groovy and fun

Wonderfully bizarre and unique. I just don't enjoy the samples that sound like dialogue from a movie or tv show. Although, I guess the album is titled movies so that should have been expected. What the heck I'll round up this time.

There's one or two tracks that I thought were quite nice, and as its a 4 track album I guess its a 4. Some of it is nearly 2 star level stuff though.

This shit is weird, but it kind of works. You somewhat get lost in the strangeness and forget your listening to an album and becomes something different. I also like the European guy shouting random things throughout. 7/10

Probably 3/5 but I’m bumping it up strictly for the ‘stache.

What a trip. I absolutely loved this. It's not gonna go into regular rotation for me, but albums like this is exactly why I started listening to 1001 albums. This was far away from anything I'd normally listen to, and made by someone I didn't know. Great album.

Weird, wild and oddly beautiful… I like it!

I love this album! Definitely experimental, but has enough familiar elements to keep it from going off the rails. It's not perfect, but definitely worth a listen.

I'll admit to being sceptical going in, but this album won me over pretty quickly. If the last song was first I might not have gotten into it, but the last song was last and by then I was in his groove.

Art music meets cool tunes

An interesting (especially given its release date) collection of sonically diverse jazz/sound collages. I am surprised I had not heard of it before and I also thought it was a contemporary 2010’s work. Much more playful than Eno oddly beautiful.

Would never have listened to this album without this project. But I actually really enjoyed this. Loved some of the random sampling throughout the tracks, especially considering this is from 1979. Each track was quite different from the other and I didn't get bored, ended up listening to a few tracks twice. Favourite track: Persian Love.

8/10. It did feel like I was listening to a piece of art. Very cool. And I got a good laugh from “Oh Lord, Give Us More Money”. There were some goofy vibes to it that I enjoyed but maybe held me back from giving it a 9 or 10. But very fun listen.

I enjoyed this a lot. Greatest album ever? Don't think so, but it's pretty special. I'm a fan of anything that uses unconventional instruments to build its sonic landscape in a unique way. Bass playing is top notch too.

Always let Holger Czukay cook 🔥Liebezeit’s drum groove on the last track is crazy too. Great work!

Kiva me nå skumt

Let’s get cool in the pool! I love weird stuff like this. Very Zappa-esque. Had me cracking up at times. Ultimately was glad it was only 36 minutes, but the current eating criminally underrates this. 4/5

Deliciously eccentric

Never heard about this artist but the music is rather interresting. Other albums added to favorites to explore more in the future.

Genial genial Gracias de nuevo 1001albumgenerator

4 - I found this super interesting and fun. Really chaotic and it sounds like a moment of creative madness. Parts reminded me of Destroyer but also just very eclectic. 2018 as well which was a surprise.

1979, Member of the Band CAN. Genre: Experimental rock, art rock, electronic rock Standouts: Cool in the Pool When I first heard the album I thought it was *weird*, but after several listens I am really starting to like its weirdness. 3.75

Weird for the sake of weird, which I can get behind. Kind of sounds like Beck if he came about in the age of Yes.

Never heard of this artist but it's pretty good!

So this is the lowest rated album I have received so far, and you know what? I fucking love it. I had never heard of this guy until today, and I love how much he just doesn't care and makes the music he wants, because he's damn good at it. The opening track is a great way in, it's fun, it's goofy, there's honestly everything to love about it. I think the song "Persian Love" drags on a bit more than it needs to, it does feel very repetitive at times. But everything else is to love. This is a lot like Pink Floyd but just weirder, and I'm definitely here for it.

Alltaf soft spot fyrir Holger þessi samt alltaf besthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exqdGJuJpI4

I was not expecting to like this but it was really cool. Fun and interesting and listenable. 4 stars.

It's a bit repetitive, but it's pretty cool to know this new stuff on the list.

Enjoyably weird multi genre space funk with great bass

fave track: cool in the pool final thoughts: love it, so good, funky asf

I quite like Can, but I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Czukay solo album. I ended up liking it quite a bit. It’s a bit kosmische, a bit spacey, and even a bit post-punk. Not bad at all.

cool in the pool 100% sommernummer! fedt og underligt album!!

I'm a Can fan but never heard this, cool stuff! Can see the influence on the Eno/Byrne record but this is more musically successful

Interesting stuff. Clearly influential

i do enjoy going into an unknown artist and album because i can never anticipate how the album will turn out. happily, this is a situation where the album is not a dud! i mean, it's certainly off the beaten path. it's full of experimental music, but it isn't quite as electronic and outer space-y as other artists exploring this area were around 1979. if i had to describe this album in a word, i'd use the word cinematic. this is partly due to the album name, but also i felt such highs and lows in listening to this album. holgar czukay's movies is strongest when the songs are instrumentals. i can't say the vocals did much for me, except when they were samples (or what i suspect were samples). regardless, the album was more interesting when focusing on the instruments. 3.5

I’m like the last frame of that Vince McMahon meme when they’re doing Peter Lorre voices on that last track

What an interesting & weird album. I'm a fan of Can, so this is pretty close to what I was expecting. 3.5 stars.

4 tracks and hardly sany information about the album on wikipedia. Ok! Cool In The Pool is an extended funk vamp with various instruments coming in and out. Oh Lord, Give Us More Money is a journey, though I am not sure where to. Persian Love is super cool, but Hollywood Symphony is super out there to start. And stays out there. W/e I had a fun time with this one.

Neat and unexpected little historical artifact. Fun listen. But nothing beyond that.

Really liked this

The songs is a bit goofy some times but overall good

Sick. Weird. Long and strange. I’m down.

When I noticed that it's 4 songs in 44 mins I was scaptical and thought I won't enjoy it. Cool in the pool was cool and surprised me. And oh lord, give us money was even cooler. Overall I rate this album COOL!

It's albums like this that made me want to do thus. What a strange album. A massive collage of sounds and styles. Very cool. Weird listenable. Moments reminded me of "my life in a bush of ghosts". Honestly wish it was longer.

Cool. Strange. Out there.

This was pretty great. Looking forward to the Can albums after this one and will def check out more Czukay solo albums.

This is bizarre in excellent ways...! Never heard this name before but read that he was a co-founder of Can which makes sense why I loveeeee it. I also read that he was talking about world music before that was really a term and I love hearing that in this solo album. Persian Love is such a nice appreciation for a different style of music. I'm confused and impressed about how the sitar/banjo sounds were made without the instruments themselves and I guess that's synthesisers and electronic sounds but I find that so baffling and impressive... Unless there's some info missing from Wikipedia haha! Cool in the Pool is a really fun track and I love that they include the organ. The last track is super chaotic and I don't like it as much.

God bless Can and Can alums

Whacky kraut pop, very NTS daytime show

I don't get the hate. It was nice and different.

I was very worried about this album when I read the wiki description but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I'd put in the same category as oxygene (but not quite that good) of late 70s proto electronica/ambient music. I think it comes down to the fact that this avant grade experimental album actually turned out to be good.

Amazing! Loved this

Not what I expected at all! Great experimental album.

I've nver heard of Holger Czukay before and nothing on the album Movies was familiar to me. There is a chance I might come back to this album because I don't quite know what to do with it. The opening track "Cool in the Pool" was a little silly, but did not completely distract from the overall listening experience. I don't know how to classify what I've heard. With the various clips of dialog laced throughout the album, I was reminded a little of Friends of Mr. Cairo (Jon and Vangelis), but not entirely in that category either. I do like longer tracks in general, because of the opportunities for the musicians to experiment and explore. I liked the longer tracks here. I'm rounding up to 4 stars.

Interessante, instrumental, meio oriental as referências

Bewildering and funny. Great musicianship and some nice melodies amongst the chaos.

Except for being way too long, I got a strange enjoy from this record. Never heard it before, never heard of Holger Czukay before, but I’ve already listed through the record twice. My very first reaction was “what IS this weirdness?” That continues to be my reaction. But I guess I kind of like that weirdness.

Whatever the hell this is, I love it. This is what I love about this album. Here I was, not expecting to hear 70's funk cowboy porn music but this is how I round out my week. 4/5.

wonderfully batshit. like captain beefheart refined by some berlin bowie.

I remember one time I was doing so much cocaine with Holger Czukay, that I forgot that I was fucking his daughter and showed him a bunch of dirty pictures of her on my phone. He punched me in the mouth.

Huh. I don't know what to make of it, but I like it. Four tracks of bizarre samples and jazz, but pleasant listening. Oh it's from a Can man. Makes sense.

First of all - terrible vocal, really off-putting. But otherwise, it's a nice combination of songs on this album. We're starting with a nice and short funky track, then we move into some psychedelic territories (best song in "Movies" by far). Later on we have more experimental electronic stuff, which is not my favourite, but thanks to solid start sounded quite nicely. Good album, a positive surprise.

Great Experimental avant type stuff, but may be lacking a special something to drag me back.

Täähän oli upea! Ihan Canin veroista. Pihtaan vielä vitosta, mutta saattaisi joskus noustakin.

Mukava nähdä hauskojakin levyjä tällä listalla taas, ja varsinkin kun on musikaalisesti mielenkiintoinen myös! Varsinainen kollaasi. 4/5

I was prepared to shoot this album down. But as I listened to each track, I found "Movies" to be light and inventive. You can write the whole thing off as an experimental prog-rock cut-and-paste job, I suppose; instead, try to get in a playful mood and have fun with it.

In some ways, I liked this more than Future Days. The variety of music really showed off where the music could be taken, this is definitely my favorite experimental album so far (it's also the most pop-y). Each track has at least one interesting part. Persian Love is beautiful, the middle to end of Hollywood symphony is great, Oh Lord Give Us More Money is insane and Cool in the Pool is generally fun. Someday, I may get this kind of music.

What a great album. Not an aficionado of Can, maybe I should dig deeper. Can hear elements of Zappa in this.

I thought this was going to suck. I kinda dug it. A little out there, but not too far out there. I probably would've liked this in my early 20's when I was into anything remotely "weird". I'll give it a 4. It's about a 3 for personal enjoyment but the overall score so far is too harsh.

A very mixed bag but 'Hollywood Symphony' is an absolute gem.

Gets off to quite the light-hearted start for being so Teutonic, no? But the larky, novelty-act effect is gone after a few songs -- "Persian Love" continues is deeper and more interesting fare in a slightly exotic vein and "Hollywood Symphony" sprawling and cool. Overall, this is weird and wonderful-ish particularly if one hears in the right mood/context.

Whoa, this was a cool album! Very early, proto-electronica type stuff. Never heard of this guy, but I'm impressed. The opening track reminded me of that silly Autobahn song by Kraftwerk, aside from that I found myself digging all the other (three) tracks on the album. I appreciate an album with a few, long tracks like this. A lot of strange instrumental sounds and textures, just like a mad scientist goofing around in his lab. There's cool stuff all over this. Shout out to Holger man, this was a pleasant surprise. Favorite tracks: Persian Love, Oh Lord Give Us More Money, Hollywood Symphony. Album art: I take it that's Holger himself, and he seems to be looking at a tv screen from inches away. It's really weird, but I really like it. His handlebar mustache and slicked back hair is giving me comfort, reminding me that this space-age stuff is coming from the '70s. 4/5

I know Can but I have never heard a solo album from Holger Czukay yet. This is the type of music I like to discover during my 1001 albums challenge so it was a nice surprise. It is something different, strange, interesting, experimental. It's not amongst the very best albums I've listened so far but it is definitely those albums that it deserves higher ratings. 7.0-7.5/10.

Plus one for a wild playlist

Surprisingly, it's much more enjoyable than I thought. The songs were interesting with various sections on the longer songs and although a little avant garde, it's one that was fun to listen to with nice guitars and other idiosyncratic sounds.

Quirky and idiosyncratic, I really liked this.

This was kind of weird but I liked the vibe.

Interesting slightly oddball experimental world fused with Krautrock fused with electronica. Can't decide between 3 and 4 stars.

tava completamente na vibe de experimentação no limite quando pensou nesse álbum né, daora dito isso, é legalzinho

Thought this was music but it’s Movies? I should listen to his album Motion Pictures next. Also I wouldn’t have know this guy was from Can if not for Sameen but now I also see it says “from Can” on the cover so I should pay more attention

This isn't really my bag, but it's fine. Sort of reminds me of Masayoshi Takanaka at times. Obviously more electronic stuff and whatnot but that's kinda the feel it gave me at times. The songs are pretty long but don't drag too much. "Persian Love" stands out to me as a nice song. "Hollywood Symphony" seems like the most out-there song with weird time signatures and weird vocals and experimental structure.

3 out of 5. Interesting album and landscape it makes. Now to go stay Cool in the Pool B)

Krautrock is indeed a great thing and the second composition can be compared with Can's Bel Air, which to me is one of the best tracks on the list so far. The album's structure is the one that generally means there's going to be cool material. But Oh Lord Give Us More Money remains the album's best and only outstanding track. The intro and the 3rd one are in fact interludes of conpletely differing styles, while the last track feels too chaotic and melody lacking though it has a couple of really good parts. All in all, a really creative album which sadly does not reach its full potential.

Weird, interesting, a nice working soundtrack. Very 70s, sci-fi, a decently jazzy.

NEIN. the concept of two quite experimental german albums back to back haunts me. but gladly i already have encountered einsturzende neubauten. and i enjoyed blixa and their friends' works! speaking of which you know i am something of a cinephile myself. but this shit just goes on and on and making me confused about its relationship with the films that i watch and i love. so generally i don’t get it although some of the samples are quite interesting. huh. generally its a nein. and a zwei out of fünf.

New to me and I really enjoyed it. Fascinating to read across to tracks it has influenced - Donald Fagen surely had Cool in the Pool (brilliantly appropriate on a day that London is breaking new temperature records) in mind when composing Kamakiriad. A fun and surprising 3*

6.5/10

This was a fun sort of different. If your looking for a mental reset i feel this would do the trick. Lots of variety, and notging that felt dessigned to create discord in the listener.

70's experimental Kraut-rock! While my worst fears were not realized, and it's even kind of okay in places, I wont be back for another listen Bye!

Interesting for sure. Didn't enjoy it as much as the CAN stuff, maybe he benefitted from that collaboration with the band.

Wacky! One of the guys from Can doing experimental, silly, fitfully melodic early electro pop. I’m thinking Eno mixed with They Might Be Giants with a dash of Captain Beefheart. The middle eastern influenced song is the least goofy, and therefore the most enduring. 3.5 stars

4 interesting pieces with surprisingly interesting movie collages with dialogue bits thematically linked in the pieces. I would suspect that the first piece completed was Persian Love as it captures the theme perfectly. As a founder of Can, the perfectionist tendencies still appear on this record, his first solo album, and that is what makes this a difficult listening experience for me. The notes are perfect- every single one of them. This leaves the pieces, particularly Hollywood Symphony, a bit cold and lifeless. This is particularly true where these works are intended to be sound collages I.e. you expect some dissonance, some rough edges that are necessary to show that this is music with emotion designed to be listened to by humans and not robots. I think the two longer pieces, Oh Lord, Give Us More Money and the Aforementioned Hollywood Symphony may have played better with some editing and additional vocal elements. It is these same vocal elements that uplift Persian Love - they bring warmth to the rather precise instrumentation. So is the album good? That’s a tough question. In my mind, it’s above average but given the fact that there is much more interesting experimental music out there now, it would be kind of tame by comparison. A long way to say 3/5.

Member of Krautrock band Can - solo effort, splendi musicianship with bent vocals

Quirky. But from this distance, not all *that* quirky.

Oh boy. Looks like I've got another weird one on my hands. I'll be honest: I have no fucking idea what this album could be. I'm getting a Polish vibe from the artist name, though I've unfortunately only listened to a single Polish album (Myslovitz's "Miłość w czasach popkultury"). Given that I'm far from an authority on Polish music, I feel like I'm taking a huge shot in the dark with my prediction. The album cover looks like an early electronic album, whereas the title gives me more of a punk feel. It could honestly be either or, though an electronic album seems more feasible for a solo artist. Here goes. Yup. This was certainly another strange one. I kind of like it, though only very mildly. "Cool in the Pool" is a fun, campy and solid opener, though the rest of the album fails to go the distance. The bass guitars are intricate and engaging at points, though they're quite scattershot and directionless in how they're peppered across this album. The same can be said about the synths. They're vibrant and pleasing, though the ambience of this album constantly snaps and changes without much cohesion. There's also the matter of these tracks being way too fucking long for what they are, though I wasn't at all fatigued by what I was listening to - moreso just underwhelmed. Despite my lack of a reaction to this album, it lights up the part of my brain which wants to understand and gel with this music. There's something aesthetically interesting about this album and what it does which held my attention for most of its runtime, which I assure you is commendable coming from the muddled brain chemistry of a zoomie zoom. Overall, I respect this album for what it sets out to do and I might just return to it in the future for that very reason. Book time. This guy was the bassist and producer for Can. That figures. After Can broke up, Czukay found a creative outlet by playing his bass along with the TV shows he was watching, effectively creating his own improvised soundtracks. This lay the groundwork for Movies. The instrumentals have a prominent African and avant-garde influence as derived from Kwaku Baah (the percussionist of this album) and Karlheinz Stockhausen (a composer who Czukay studied under prior to his career in music). "...Movies was [...] assembled like a film, piecing together different segments of various takes into a unified whole." The album was one of the first to use samples, which were collected over months of surfing the radio and TV. Wikipedia says this album is well-regarded by the few critics that reviewed it and was described as a "cult classic" by The Independent. However, it didn't chart anywhere. I'm favourable to this album. It's certainly a unique and challenging listen, and I suppose it earns some music history cred by virtue of being one of the first albums to utilise sampling. I cosign this inclusion.

Cool in the Pool

crazy old man, aber ganz fun

just a bunch of noodling

Funky, quirky. Long instrumentals with lots of random sounds but not enough to hook me. 3/5

Voor beide aspecten is dezelfde zin exemplarisch: Let's get cool in the pool.

A little too weird for me. This might have been cool in Iron Curtain Poland, but my western ears don't connect with it overall. There were some riffs and chunks in there I could hear reverberations of in later electronic music. It would have been much better without the distorted vocals over everything.

Very interesting and also very weird! Worth another lesson I think.

This was wild.

Gefiel mir mehr als Frank Zappa, aber mehr ein Künstlers Künstler

Better than his band: Can. This one a fine bit of nonsense, if you’re into that sort of thing.

RATING: 7/10 HIGHLIGHT: Oh Lord, Give Us Money LOWLIGHT: Cool in the Pool

On some now defunct streaming service I had saved a playlist called "Sexy International Hotel Lounge" or something along those lines. A few of the generator albums I've encountered would have fit right in there. But it never really struck me as art created by people, just a kind of higher class muzak. As with those other albums I enjoyed this reasonable well but couldn't really interface with it as art.

7/10 Interesting and a bit weird, but still pretty listenable. I enjoy getting discoveries like this from the list.

Weird but mostly enjoyable. Not what I was expecting or normally what I'd listen to.

Quirky and fun. Weird but not too weird. Definitely worth a listen.

I liked the jazzier songs on this album, the others less so.

어우 듣기좋아

I liked the inventive/playfulness of it, but in the end most of it just sounded like someone amusing themself in the studio. Good, but not great.

Very crazy and pretty cool!

I really want to go 4 with this, partly to piss off the Normies, and partly because it's very good. But will I actually listen to it again? Out of the 4 songs, one of them is actively bad, one is okay, and the two long ones are great. But even if I add thise two big boys to my car playlist, I can see me skipping them. So, it has to be a 3. But it's good.

This was interesting to say the least. It was like he used every style and instrument he could find.

Everything musical but the kitchen sink. I heard pieces of big band jazz, The The, Pink Floyd, Bach... Overall, it felt pretty confusing but fun. 3.5/5

Well, I’ll take something interesting any day. I'm not the biggest Can fan, but I liked their first two albums enough. Very well sequenced and nice to listen to. This is good too. "Cool in the Pool" is a nice little song. A good opener, and way better than you'd expect it to be based on what it is. Very like mentally stimulating. And then of course I'm a sucker for a 13-minute krautrock song so I love "Oh Lord, Give Us More Money." I mean it's so nice to listen to. Weird obviously but very nice as a little bit of background stuff, and when he starts raving about "GIVE US MOOOOORRRREEEE MONEYYYYYY!!!! HAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!" I really vibed with it. I also really like the throughline of weird samples across this whole album, it gives the entire thing a nice little air of extra weirdness which really helps to transport you somewhere, which I appreciate in an album. "Persian Love" is... kinda wack honestly. I appreciate what it goes for but it's just kinda not there. The last song is fine. I think the big problem is there's just not much personal expression here. The music's awesome, but there's so little behind it. Y'know? That being said I do love parts of it. 7.2/10

I did not like this nor would I ever listen to it again but it was so odd it made me laugh and i liked when he wailed like a distorted baby

Molto interessante!

Not something I'd listen to every day but interesting enough

lol it makes this guy was in Can. Cool in the Pool is the cheesiest song in both a good and terrible way. Persian love is sick. A very weird experiment of a record. You hear his prog rock influences, jazz, somem world music, just a bizarare listening experience.

This is the type of album I was hoping the generator would throw at me. A founding member of Can made a solo album with early examples of sampling in 1979?!? It was weird, it redefined my understanding of ‘solo albums post-breakup’ and I never would’ve listened to this album if this site didn’t exist.

This album was weird but cool. Reading about some of the pioneering stuff this guy was up to in the 70s ramped up the coolness. I did add Hollywood Symphony to my EDM dance track playlist. Pretty great track.

This was cool. Unique and weird in the right ways and I really enjoyed it as a background playlist. Doubt i'll listen to it again but a fun experiment. 7/10

Day 253 Enjoyed song 1 and 3, didn’t enjoy 2 or 4. An odd album Highlight Cool in the pool

What a wonderfully weird album. Each track was incredibly distinct in style from one another and each had their quirks to keep things interesting. I’m not sure I enjoyed it per se, but it at least was something quite drastically different from the norm. Got a lot of Zappa/Beefheart vibes from it and, similar to those artists, something o have respect for, even if it’s not the kind of thing I’d typically choose to pick up and listen to.

Coooll in zhe pooil

Pretty wild album. His voice was kinda funny. Hollywood Symphony had some of my favorite moments, but Persian Love was also a nice calm listen. 5.8/10

It's funky, it's groovy, it's jazzy, reggae and Indian, experimental. It surprised me and sounds like the guy had fun doing it.

A little off beat, but neither annoying nor anger inducing. Will never make my play list though.

Weird. I like it

Interesting.

Смешная первая песня, дальше происходит толкинхендинг (также извекстный как мистербанглинг на 3/10)

very funky, really liked this one

This is pretty good! There are other drifty arty rock albums like this from around this time I prefer but I've also only heard this once. Thank you Holger! Everyone listen to his album Plight + Premonition with David Sylvian for beautiful ambient music .

Very unique songs, he takes a lot of sampling and layers it throughout the tracks to create a disjointed feeling but each track does have consistent percussion, bass and guitar as a through line which makes a big difference to other expiramental albums I've heard so far. Its fairly enjoyable to listen to, its not quite a 3 star album technically but I'd rate it as a high 2 which bumps it up.

Interesting

Interesting. Maybe a little too avant gard.

To be honest, the album is good, it may remotely resemble the music of Pink Floyd, but I personally did not like it.

Persian Love is a beautiful song

loopy!

Very European. Very nice.

There's a lot packed in. For the majority it is well crafted and works. There are passages where it strays too far and grates.

Mye kul musikk, men altfor goofy

Better than Coldplay

Weird. But strangely likeable and easy to listen to

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Not likely to revisit this one, but enjoyed having it on the list.

This album is weird, but intriguing. The highlight for me was the instrumental variety and the blend of sounds they used. This album pulled from some folk, rock, and blues sounds. The interesting part came with the weird sounds that you wouldn't expect to be added with them like weird synth choices and other weird sounds. It kind of worked for me. The downsides were the vocals were very low so it was hard to make out what was being said and at times felt like the vocals were an after thought. One the things I appreciate is how the songs transition and morph over time, but the songs are really long and it was hard to tell when one ended and another began. I didn't even realize the album ended cause the autoplay feature played another song by them.

Avant-garde multi-genre. Reminiscent of movie soundtrack. Quite weird, I don't really get it on 1st listen. Hollywood Symphony has a lot of variation and quite nice sections 2nd listen is more fun once you're in the right mood Best track - Persion Love, Hollywood Symphony 3 stars - I don't love it but it doesn't offend me

It's experimental, kinda cool. Though I'm not sure if I'm understanding it, or am I just overinterpreting

Weird, but good weird.

Movies is weird. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a “did that really need to be there?” way. You can absolutely hear the creativity and the forward-thinking spirit in it. The tape loops, radio snippets, drifting bass lines, and collage-style production feel genuinely experimental rather than lazy. It’s clear Czukay was pushing at the edges of what pop or rock music could be. That said, experimentation alone doesn’t guarantee cohesion. At times the pieces don’t quite meld, and the constant vocal sampling becomes more distracting than illuminating. There are moments where the atmosphere locks in and the strangeness feels purposeful, even cool. But just as often it feels like it’s reaching a bit too far without fully landing the idea. I respect it more than I enjoy it. I’m glad I heard it. I don’t need to hear it again.

1: Hollywood Symphony 2: Cool in the Pool 3: Oh Lord, Give Us Money

Clásicos del avant garde

I will not include the bonus instrumental version of "Cool in the Pool" in this review. It's a good thing I went through both Can records first, because now I recognize bassist Holger Czukay and how integral he was to the group, as his recording and tape-editing skills helped define their sound. However, that didn't stop Czukay from being sidelined by the band for creative differences and his limited ability on the bass guitar. Thus, he left Can in 1977 to pursue a solo career, with Movies serving as his debut. The best way I could describe Movies is as a sound collage, influenced by the musique concrète work of Stockhausen, whom Czukay previously studied under. The core sound is an oddball combination of electronic textures and media samples accumulated over several months of listening on the radio. In a sense, this was one of the first records to make use of sampling, with limited presence from Czukay's bass and talkative vocals, the spare layered synths he added, and the cerebral drumwork of fellow Can alum Jaki Liebezeit. I respect the intent of this record, even if I don't find myself fully gelling with it. "Cool in the Pool" was a tad limp in the synth-heavy funk romp, only made interesting by the occasional whir of radio samples. "Oh Lord, Give Us More Money" saw other Can alums Michael Karoli and Irmin Schmidt join in the extended instrumental jam, only hampered by Czukay's occasional shouting vocals that can be headache-inducing. Probably the most realized track of the four here was "Persian Love", where I was intrigued by the pairing of the sampled Iranian vocalist with the soft guitar and synth accompaniment. Finally, "Hollywood Symphony" opted for a near-cinematic feel in the presentation with spacious synth textures and noodling guitar that does come off as a journey into the unknown, even if it is more wandering than focused. That does lead me to my ultimate conceit with Movies, which is that it is a collection of experiments, largely foregoing compositional structure in Czukay's pursuit of forming these sound collages with gathered audio recordings. He certainly accomplished what he set out to do, and the result was that he pioneered a production technique. But little else is given to the instrumental or lyrical writing other than trying to capture an atmosphere. Sampling had to start somewhere, and I am grateful to Holger Czukay for ushering in a new era of music, even as I feel we've come a long way from this.

A cool discovery...I found it a bit too chaotic at times. And all the sampling and layers made me think if this album inspired the likes of The Avalanches.

Erinomaisen erikoista. Ei mitään mahdollisuutta laittaa tätä mihinkään genreen, tää on niin kaikkea. Tosi kaoottista, koskaan ei tiedä mihin tää tulee menemään seuraavaksi. Silti tosi miellyttävää. Parhaat: Oh Lord Give Us Some Money

Was leaning 4 happily until vocals intruded--grrr. They throw sand into the smooth turning of the gears. Not so bad in Persian, almost good. Guess a mixed approach generally helps. Maybe not so much this time.

I was perfectly on board for the first half, it was easy pleasant listening in the background. And then I found myself willing it to end and feeling frustrated and impatient. Could have been my frame of mind but I was glad when that loooooong final track was over.

Layers and sampling, German, zappa-like, interesting, Byrne Cool in the pool

Cool in the Pool Oh Lord Give us More Money

If I never hear "Cool in the Pool" again I will be very happy. The rest of it was fine, but nothing really stood out in a positive way. I appreciate the inspiration this album seems to have had on future electronic music, so I'm bumping it up a bit to a 3.

Wonderfully weird. Favorite track: Persian Love 3.5/5

A far more interesting album to read about than it is to listen to. There's something really cool here and I know a lot of music I like now might not be here if not for stuff like this, but I doubt this is going to get replayed any time soon, 3*

Very interesting, strange, experimental. Glad I heard it, but don't think I'll be going back for more

Big accents. Funky. Shame it's not available on qobuz 3

This was fine! Didn't really understand it but that's okay, not everything has to be for me :)

niet slecht maar toch meer fan van Can

bissi zu schräg

It's just someone pissing around with samples when it wasn't easy, but behind it is some groovy shit and on top is a German guy ranting. It's batshit crazy and a lot of fun, and not what I expected. However, the last track goes on forever and is batshit crazy in a less good way.

Weird but pretty cool.

Weird as hell. Fun if you're in the mood to listen to it.

what the hell is even going on here, some of it was good tho

fascinating album, has a bit of everything

What the shit is this? LOL.

Weird, but not altogether awful

The sort of thing you'd expect a teenager to make if they had some time with a synth.

Interesting 3.5

It deserves to be on the list because it was different! But I won't be listening again.

liked the second half of oh lord, gives us more money (the guitar sounds and all that)

Most things Can related put a big dumb smile on my face, and this was no exception. Definitely will listen again

i can see how this might be foundational to a burgeoning genre, but it just wasn't any great shakes 2 me.

interesting idea but i didn't love the execution. the different genres and styles here are cool, but the tracks are super long and don't stick with an idea long enough for it to be memorable. it felt like i was listening to a half dozen movie soundtracks at the same time. favorites: cool in the pool

Quite interesting, I like the instrumentation I guess, synths and stuff, obviously the songs are very expansive and progressive. It's obviously very arty, but I think some bits are maybe a bit too weird, like the vocal bit where he's just yelling the song's title. He was probably influenced by prog rock stuff, but I guess he also probably heavily influenced those bands in CAN so I guess its a bit of a cycle. Favourite songs: the longer ones. Overall around 5/10

Too experimental for my tastes but I found this more interesting than I expected.

Well this is different, and that’s not a bad thing. I’m not going to seek this out again, but there are some interesting ideas here, and whilst it’s experimental it’s not unlistenable (although there are some awkward polyrhythms and atonal stuff that isn’t totally comfortable). A perfectly fine record, but not more than tha.

interesting…

Certainly not amazing. But I was NOT expecting a quintuplet groove at all. I feel obliged to give it no less than 3 simply for that matter

Random thoughts: * I'm guessing this one sounded more groundbreaking in 1979. This kind of sounded basic to my 2026 ears. * I did enjoy it and even listened to it twice. However, I really felt the basic-ness on the 2nd listen. * Overall, I respect this kind of music and is kind of my jam but this is early pioneer which has been thoroughly expanded and made way more interesting since this originally came out.

This is much more playful than Can and occasionally strays too far into silliness, especially on the opening track. I enjoyed the rest though, particularly 'O Lord, give us more money' which deserves a favourable response from the Lord

Favorite Track: Persian Love

I really like it but I'd like it more if he did about 20% less

Can't say I loved it but it was fun and am glad it's on the list

Almost gets annoying at times, then becomes quite interesting

cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool! cool in the pool!

This was certainly interesting and it was fairly solid. Fairly experimental and I think most of it paid off, didn’t overstay its welcome either!

Pretty interesting and fun samples. Makes me want to go back and listen to earlier stuff of his

Ethereal/atmospheric "kraut rock"

Album 996 of 1089 Movies - Holger Czukay (1979) Rating : 3 / 5 My first impulse was that I was about to sit through yet another electronica album that does nothing for me - and while that instinct wasn’t entirely wrong, this one did manage to bring something extra to the table. There’s more personality here than I’ve heard in many albums from this corner of the genre. That said, it’s still very much an album built around sampling, often sampling for sampling’s sake, which isn’t always my thing. Knowing Czukay was one of the pioneers of that approach makes it easier to appreciate what he was doing, even if I don’t always enjoy the results. You can definitely hear ideas being tested that others would later refine and make more accessible. There are moments where the sound experimentation genuinely works, and I enjoyed the way he plays with texture and atmosphere. I can’t say this is something I’ll be eager to revisit anytime soon, but it’s also not something I’d completely write off. It feels like an album I might come back to years from now, more out of curiosity than comfort. Not essential for me, but certainly interesting.

Neymar getting a lil too excited

The two longer tracks were pretty good, but I don't care for this

There's something so charming about these warm, cheesy old synth riffs of this era. Must have felt so futuristic at the time, and now it feels nostalgic in the opposite direction. Lots of direction taken from Zappa (not just musically - I mean, look at the dude on the cover) and there's some interesting and varied sampling here, even if at times it lends the album an uneven quality. Not the kind of album I can picture listening to again, but an interesting experiment regardless and a great feature on this list. fav tracks: Persian Love

Really groovy!

"Let's get hot...on the dancing...spot." Seriously shagadelic krautrock here -- pretty interesting, although a little more out there than I care for. But it's fun!

Different but ok .

Not close to the same level as Can, but has some really good moments.

Mi ha lasciato un po' così, carino ma sospeso.

Quite strange, artish, unique and ahead of its time. Some parts were entertaining, some were not so much for me.

I like it as background music. Cool in the Pool is the weakest song on the album. I like the rest a lot better. It definitely feels innovative for its time.

a neat sort of active listening jazz type album. i dont know if it invented sampling or whatever but it's got a nice groove to it. does play a little bit like a movie score

Rating: 7/10 I thought this was pretty cool, Holger definitely succeeds at making his own type of rock album with experimental sounds, just enjoying the grooves

Not even the worst thing ever, catch me on a good day and I could listen to this again for fun. Weird but not in an annoying way 6/10

Funky longplays. Not enough to keep me coming back, but enjoyable. 6 Dripping Taps out of 10 Lizard Wizards

It's sort of like Can, but not quite. The percussive core of that band isn't quite replicated here, and the grooves are replaced by sampling and electronica. The overall presentation is also a bit dancier - in particular in the disco send-up "Cool In The Pool." The last track, "Hollywood Symphony", is the closest Holger comes to hitting the bar that he achieves with his Krautrock bandmates. It's an interesting record, but not a great one.

Movies by Holger Czukay is certainly a unique experience. The album is packed with layers of sound, unexpected samples, and surprisingly strong lyrics for something so experimental. It’s one of those records where you’re never entirely sure what you’re listening to—or why it exists—but somehow it works, and I found myself enjoying the ride. Whether I’d return to it again, I’m honestly not sure. Favourite track: Oh Lord, Give Us More Money is superb. What an absolute trip that song takes you on. Least favourite track: Persian Love sounded like background music in an Indian restaurant. Album artwork: A very cool cover with plenty happening—fits the album perfectly.

weird, interesting, heaps of fun, no way i would've found this myself.... this is what this site is all about!!!

the persian love song one sounds like push 2 start by tyla though i guess it’s the other way around

Interesting avant-garde pop. Only four songs but they’re each 20 minutes long. I liked discovering this guy and related artists like U-she.

a really interesting listening. electronic with random samples, beats, and synths all thrown together, but it comes together pretty well. 3.5/5

Another surprise album! I genuinely really enjoyed the journey this album put me on.

a very good experimental album with a good level of interest to it. one of the last things i'd ever return to be it's always good to challenge ur earbuds

This was neat.

Pretty cool, I liked the listen Will I listen to again: 49%

‘Movies’ is essentially a de facto Can album with lots of sampling. There’s some nice bits and I like the overall sense of avant-garde freedom and experimentation present, but as a whole it feels more like a curiosity than a fully satisfying listen.

Interesting listen, reminded me of something like KLF

Fun and creative work, last song is 15 minutes of greatness

Movies was a much more solid album than i was expecting it to be. When i looked at it's Wikipedia page and saw an Experimental Rock tag in the genres section, I got a bit worried that this album was just gonna be noise. But thankfully, while there were some noisy parts, the album did feel like it was properly composed and had quite a bit of good melodies and fun ideas. Even those distorted guitars which I'm typically not a very big fan of were alright here. Like i said, the album still does get randomly noisy at points but it was never unbearable and it had enough cool ideas for me to give it a pass. Best Song: Cool In The Pool Worst Song: Persian Love

This has a very Brian Eno/David Byrne vibe to it. Easy and interesting listen.

not my type of music, but i did enjoy persian love. although couldn't find it on apple music so

This was fun… wouldn’t revisit though.

Interesting.

Meh. Elevator music.

The link between prog rock and techno. A really fun listen.

*Very Avant-garde and out there, but has some cool musical and unique elements to each song *Interesting to listen to but I probably won't revisit it

Interesting but unremarkable. 3 *

Weird I think it’s grow on me if I listen to it again

01) Cool in the Pool - 7,0 02) Oh Lord, Give Us More Money - 6,0 03) Persian Love - 7,5 04) Hollywood Symphony - 5,5 TOTAL: 6,50 (65/100) Current ranking: 499/711

Perfectly fine background music … not sure I’d play it again

I enjoyed Art of Noise, Yello, etc. growing up and expected this to be similar. In some ways yes but less structured and not as engaging. I’m torn between 2 and 3 on this. Feeling kind today. 3/5

Surprising. Partly nice. Partly not so special.

3/5 a good amount of weird. Slight folks, slightly jazzy

That was a fucking rollercoaster. Some of it was really good. Some of it was batshit mental. I'm glad I listened to it, but I'll not be unhappy if I don't every hear it again.

Here’s one I’ve never heard of before. Mediocre music in my opinion.

This was a cool experimental experience in a genre I like quite a bit. It had some really nice instrumentals but it’s obviously harder to judge individual songs when there are only 4 that make up the album. The shorter ones (first and third) I really liked as they were essentially more focussed and condensed versions of the other 2. The longer ones were very chaotic for good and for bad, a lot of random sampling with movie clips (hence the title I guess) and electronic noises with some interesting vocals. I liked it but it was a bit too weird but I guess it’s to be expected from the CAN guy, I definitely appreciate his creativity though. Favourites: Cool in the pool and persian love. Overall, 6/10.

Holger Czukay's name didn't ring a bell. When I read that he was part of CAN, I was intrigued. The album may well be avant-garde. There were also some sequences that I really liked. Overall, I found the album too exhausting. I probably won't listen to it again. 3/5

Eclectic...something I had never heard of before. Purposefully weird and creative for the sake of being creative; I liked it more than I expected to for that creativity. That said, I wouldn't share it or listen to it for enjoyment. It feels like a running SNL gag making fun of this sort music, but it's actually better than that description. Go in expecting silliness.

Cool in the Pool 3.3 Oh Lord, Give Us More Money 3.4 Persian Love 3.2 Hollywood Symphony 3.5 Score: 3.35

3/5 it did catch my interest but def smth u need a hit or two before listening

Straightforward but then the pets join in and you remember this is the guy who found Damo Suzuki on the street and instantly asked him to sing for Can. Not weird then weird. Belongs on the list. Probably won't listen to it again though.

Wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I see "experimental rock" from the 70s and I assume it's just gonna be noise. But this was coherent. It was more jam bandy which isn't my thing, but wasn't terrible.

I liked more than I didn’t.

Short, wierd, funky, but fun

This is one of those albums that I liked but I assume the global reviews will be low, or at least be polarizing. Weird and quirky but funky and catchy. I also like Can (but don't know their later albums), and there are some similarities, but this feels like an extension of them into a new era of music. I like the sampling, and some of the guitar fills are actually sublime. It's bursting with creative ideas, but it is a bit uneven to listen to all the way through. Overall I need to hear this a few more times to adapt to it, but it will probably rise in rating over time.

cool in the pool- Whys he sound like kif from Futurama. 5 lord give us more money- 4 Persia love- 4 or 5 Hollywood symphony- 4

To say i wasn't convinced on my first listen to this album would be an understatement. But then I hit a round two and I started locking in here and there. I started hearing some really interesting passages, some quirky, funky bass lines. Some euphoric moments. I didn't find myself fully convinced by all of the tracks, and i still think Cool in the Pool is ludicrous and not in a particularly good way, but in the end i think i could say i did enjoy this album. Particularly Persian Love and Hollywood Symphony. 7/10

I'll just copy the review I wrote for Future Days by Can: It's ok. Experimental, ambiental, not unpleasant to the ear. That's all I can say, nothing negative, but not much positive. 3/5

Overall: 6/10 I find this more interesting than enjoyable. There's a lot going on at all times and it begs for your full attention. I really love that it's trying to do something different and weird while still being something that people can latch on to. It doesn't always work for me but I'm glad I had the chance to experience it. Fav Song: Hollywood Symphony

Cool pool

So very unique

First song really took you off in a completely different direction than the rest of the album. While quite quirky and corny, 'Cool In The Pool' was quite unique and had something going for it. Sadly, the rest of the album was a progressive rock slog, with 8 minute long instrumentals. This was not at all as interesting as the first song. I'm genuinely sad that it didn't continue along the tracks of the first song, and was disappointed with the rest. Weak 3.

I don't know what I was expecting this to be, but definitely not whatever Cool in the Pool is - it actually made me laugh when it started. However, after a long run of albums by artists I already knew, it was fun to get something so completely new (to me) and off kilter.

This was pretty cool. Krautrock is definitely interesting music, and I enjoy it from time to time.

I was ready for the experimentalism and found sounds. I was not ready for the groove. Way more groove than I expected. It’s still probably not something I’ll revisit simply because I prefer shorter songs with more vocals, but it’s good!

Funky. Weird. Cool in ze pool.

Fun album but nothing outstanding

While I enjoy the presence of a Can member on this list, I really don't get how it got here.

That's not something I would keep listening to all of my life, but the mood was overall enjoyable! Nice one, Holger!

I love weird shit but not when it’s obviously weird for the sake of being weird and too many songs on this album felt that way even though I really liked a lot of the other ones.

I thought this was alright. I thought the first track was the best -- it kind of reminded me of the art disco of Of Montreal. Beyone that, "Persian Love" was kind of cool. I wasn't crazy about the other two songs. 3 stars.

It's experimental, alright.

What a stange experience

Interesting. Completely outside of my knowledge and base. I generally detest kraut rock. But thus was a nice background unobtrusive hum. I won’t listen to it again but it was a nice visit.
