Reviews (page 2 of 8)
I said it before and I'll say it again: Orbital has a talent for playing variations on a theme. It only rewards the patient (or bored) and I can easily see someone dropping out of the album early on, but there's something here that just builds on itself in a way that I find compelling. But, it's still early nineties beep boop and that can overwhelm me on close listening. I was gonna dock this, but I realized I was being a hater. It helps that HALYCON + ON + ON is one of the greatest songs ever so you know what? Let's give it a 5.
One of the cornerstones of British techno. The Lush-Impact-Remind suite is a heavenly 30 mins of electronic music. Halcyon tops it off. Essential
Really really good electronic record. A little trancy. Very spacey. I'm giving it a 5 because I can't give 4.5's but it is masterfully produced and just good productive work music or just nice dance music.
truly mesmerizing electronic music; i've listened to a few of orbitals material and i'm very familiar with their abstract and almost alien way of producing dance tracks... this album is certainly no exception. you electronic musicheads out there will fixate hard on this "brown album". hip, post-modern and minimalist infectious beatsies persist throughout the album's runtime. it's the sort of oddly fascinating electronic music that at first makes you a little confused, but it soon worms right into your brain, entrancing you with its music. if aphex twin is the weirdo outsider in the family, orbital is the older introverted brother that exhibits grace and class in his musical poetry.
Simply one of the best electronic albums of all time. Don't usually do this, but it deserves 5* for Halycon + On + On alone. Rest of the album is brilliant too though. Walk Now's British traffic light pedestrian crossing sample was damn cool. Lush 3.1 was amazing too. + On + On + On. Input Out.
amazing album!
I think my brain chemistry has permanently changed after listening to this
Pretty cool og
one of my favroutie albums of the nineties, whoever made this selection is awesome
I can't decide if this is a 2 or a 5. It's a 5 because this is really excellent, top notch. It makes me think I'm in a dirty basement in a college town, fog machine running, cheap lights. In the corner, a couple on something- who knows what- is getting a little too handsy and a little too undressed. Between sets I dropped my earplugs case while passing around a joint and a cig, and when I go back up to get it they ask me what are the pills inside. Estrogen and Adderall, I have class in the morning. It's only a 2 because deep in my heart I don't believe people listen to ~albums~ of this music. The subgenres are hyperlocal and niche because the artists know everyone that plays around here, and the variation in the gene pool is from those two guys from Worcester who come around every once in a while. I'm hitting 5 because I know the low scores here probably just don't get it, but I think you had to be there
For anyone who was into electronic music in the ’90s, this album is a classic. I remember hearing a lot of these tracks played at raves, but they’re also great for just chilling out. It finds that nice balance between techno, house, and ambient, making it both energetic and immersive. I definitely miss these days.
Sick ambient I have a lot of space for ambient 90s electronic music. Very few points where I didn’t think the production held up. Halcyon is obviously a banger but also loved the tr303 usage in the first half of the album.
Simple noises combined to make complex beats. Tasty complex beats. This is the kind of music I could get lost to in the middle of the night in a 12 hour gaming sesh as a kid. 90s techno was on another level and I feel we have moved away from this style and it’s such a shame. Crunchy beats. 9/10
A fantastic album. An artefact of its time, but still thoroughly enjoyable. An easy five stars.
👍
Looking for the perfect album that can make you experience what it felt like to attend a rave party in the early nineties? Look no further. Orbital's 2nd LP, constructed like a giant mix where each infectious track segues into the next, is THE quintessential album in that genre. Plus it's got pretty melodies and harmonies. Plus it's subliminally conceptual, with its spoken-word interludes using the phasing tecnique once pioneered by Steve Reich. Plus it's got "Halcyon + on + on", taking Opus III's hit "It's A Fine Day" to a whole other cosmic level. And the whole thing aged surprisingly well, too -- probably thanks to its intricate ambient layerings, as essential as the dance / house beats found in this record. Dadancable (dada and dancable). Perfect 5 for me. Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 446 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 267 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 324
Classic
I've never heard of Orbital before. Not my usual listening, but another nice find from the generator.
Brings back a lot if mems, a classic when all this electronica was young and experimental. A great set of songs quite low key but pushing all the right butons.
THIS IS THE SHIT
Trippy electronic trance. 5/5
Big fan of Orbital, was really looking forward to this especially after the last couple. Faves, Impact (The Earth Is Burning), Walk Now..., and Halcyon and On and On
A strong 5 from me - I fricking love Orbital. I see a lot of reviewers moaning about "Time Becomes" - first of all, have some respect, that's Worf talking! Secondly, I wanna play these people some actual experimental music and watch their heads disintegrate like time-lapsed rotting pumpkins. 😈 Fave tracks - "Halcyon + On + On" is an all time fave track of mine from any band in any genre, so there's that. "Lush 3-2" also stood out on this play through....
Electronic music from the 90s anytime man
Great flow music.
Banger, perfect music to program/work to
nice glad i discover something new
5/5 - classic
I don't go clubbing to techno, but this made me want to go clubbing to techno
4.5. Would make a great dystopian anime soundtrack!
Cool
Oni su mi iz underworld definitivbo najdraži album oriented elektronski izvođač devedesetih. Ovo, zeleni, sansvillion i in sides su jebena remek djela
Amazing. Especially the tracks that are linked together and the Halcyon and On and On.
I’ve probably listened to this just once before and I remember enjoying it a lot, and I’m not at all disappointed in revisiting it. It’s just an excellent electronic record from start to finish; there are no filler tracks here (it could be argued that the first and last tracks are not necessary, but I think they’re cool). Orbitals most played song Halcyon and On and On is an obvious highlight and never out warms its welcome even at almost 9.5 minutes. Even at over 30 years old this album sounds ahead of its time, and like the best electronic music albums it serves just as well as background music as it does close listening. Electronic music is an area I’ve explored quite a bit in recent years after being uninterested for a long time, and this is one of the finest examples I’ve come across.
It’s been a long time! Really great.
Surprised how much I enjoyed this album, 10/10
Makes me wanna MOVE. SO good
Once more, today’s artist is one of haven’t heard of before. I suppose they were a little before my time if this album was widely known in 1993, but it’s certainly not someone who is still talked about today (at least in my circles). Let’s listen and see how it holds up! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Lush 3-1, Remind I had this playing while I was working yesterday, and found myself loving it. I’m truly finding a love for IDM through these daily albums that I never would have discovered otherwise. I was sad when it ended because I wanted it to carry on for ages. I love how the opening and closing tracks are minimal yet very odd, and how they bookend a conduit for musical flow state with me. Very enjoyed. Very recommend.
This took me straight back to 1993 when I was listening to more electronic music than I do now, mainly the weirder end including; The Orb, William Orbit and this. Strange how they all like globes... loved all the repetition and all the squelchy noises. The Lush's are banging and 'Impact' is full of squelch and sampled horns, love it. Nice to discover the singer on 'Halcyon' was actually the one from Opus III as it sounded like her. Loved nearly every minute of it, maybe apart from Worf from ST-TNG at the start. Well worth a low 5.
Um, yeah, I dig it. This is pretty freaking incredible! Made back in the days we simply called it electronica or techno, this album stands beautifully tall even today. I will undoubtedly be coming back to this one!
Early goa nice!
I have begun to be a big fan of Orbital for the innovation and mass appeal. This album does not disappoint.
To all you haters out there: f*ck you. This is f*cking gold.
Loop-dee-loop.
where time becomes a loop where time becomes a loop where time becomes a loop where time becomes a loop where time becomes a loop where time becomes a loop
4.75
Really great early techno album. Had a lot of elements that would absolutely be used in later techno music, especially in the 90s
A classic of Electronica, Orbital 2 contains some of their best work including HALCYON+ON+ON. Besides the obligatory beats and samples (the first song samples Worf from Star Trek TNG, current at the time), Orbital 2 includes the type of driving rhythms more associated with EDM. A pioneer in 90s electronic music, Orbital helped create the template for modern Electronica in large part with this album.
Greatness
Did I really need to listen to another album of electronic music, especially from a repeat artist, before I die? I think not. Did I enjoy it, nonetheless? Yes, I did.
I can't tell one song from the next but that's ok. I was engaged and entertained throughout.
I loved it - a fantastic sound kaleidoscope! Couldn’t be happier floating away on a river of techno.
LOVE IT
Um eletrônico bem legal, cheio de elementos diferentes e alguns vocais melódicos.
This shit slaps. I loved it. I think it may because I listened to it while working, but this is perfect background working music.
Fantastic
Tarda unos minutos en despegar, pero cuando lo hace, verga. Larga vida al ravé.
perfect 90s electronic
Mortal Kombat fans unite!
Good vibes, nicely cohesive and flows together well Fav tracks: Halcyon + On + On, Impact (The Earth Is Burning), Remind, Walk Now...
Opened and closed with two of the most annoying tracks I have ever heard. The middle? Pretty wonderful early 90's mid-tempo trance music. This was my jam back then. Songs just flowed into each other naturally, 30 minute long suites seemed to fly by. If there are any negatives, the tempo felt like it never really varied all that much. Skip the opening and the closing, and you've got a great, great album.
Solid album. I could easily see this becoming part of the rotation. Sonically interesting without being just noise, which a lot of electronic music can easily drift into for me. Really got into these grooves. 4.5⭐️
Great vibes. I had no idea what I was getting into with the opening track. This is a very atmospheric record. I feel like I could easily zone out listening to it or dig deep and listen to the layered sounds more intently.
Makes me wish I was around during the nineties/noughties for some raving
Great album - felt like I was in a distopian sci-fi listening on the tube when a preacher got on whilst this was playing!
havent listened to orbital in a while but i enjoyed this a lot and made me 10x more productive at work
i like it
This would be a five if I could hear the Sega Genesis sound chip version. I’m tempted to bump it to a five because for how this SHOULD have hit me, long/repetitive tracks…idk, I was on board for nearly all of it.
Good but not my thjng
Orbital have had some absolutely monster tracks haven't they. Reminds me of a time when the UK (OK, the world) wasn't a fucking disaster zone and everything we touched was brilliant.
absolutely sick electronic, can't believe id never heard of this!
IM IN N FUCKING DEEP SPACE
Another one where it’s taken me a few days to find the right context for it, but once there the melodies and rhythms make it very worthwhile.
It’s been a long, long time. There’s some good stuff here. This was pretty widely influential. Techno music was designed to be layered and mixed into other songs. This was done live on turntables by brilliant DJs. As compelling as this can be at times, it is, by its very nature, missing something. There’s supposed to be another song woven around and through each track. This is mostly a set of building blocks for creative college kids to dick around with in their basements. Complete the scene with glow sticks and X-tasty. This inspired enough artists to merit 4/5.
I don't know why I was expecting something higher energy, but I loved the really ambient feel of this album. It feels like good music to take a really long drive while listening to it. The intro and outro were pretty interesting as well, I liked how the two samples getting further away from each other interacted. Anyways, it's just really good EDM. It reminded me a lot of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works in some parts, and that's one of my favorite electronic albums out there.
I’m vaguely aware of this album! Also I’m learning about orbitals right now in chemistry. Which are pretty cool! This album is pretty cool too. "Planet of the Shapes" is good, though slightly disappointing, but is thankfully followed up by the very pleasant "Lush 3-1," which I initially wasn't incredibly impressed by, but the persistent melody it employs is really pretty and nice. "Lush 3-2" is also really nice, with some great drums, and an awesome building melody. Though "Impact (The Earth is Burning)" does NOT sound like the Earth burning, it does sound very pleasant. So does "Remind," which adds a nice bit of dissonance and texture, which I like a lot. "Walk Now..." and "Monday" kinda blend into each other, but "Monday" is definitely the superior, and one of this album's standouts. Finally we get to "Halcyon + On + On," which is handily the best song on this album, a progressive, polyphonic techno masterpiece. Though I prefer house music over techno music (their similarities beg the comparison; I much prefer house because it's often more political, as well as originating from Black queer Chicagoans, who I am frequently aligned with), I still enjoy this greatly, appreciate its challenging moments, and I think it's pretty cool overall. 8.4/10
Keiharde vibe
Decades ago, I initially disliked this whole style of music - found it repetative - then, well, let's say I saw it from a different perspective and overnight understood what Orbital were doing and loved it. For that, I find the album expertly engineered. Thought it'd be a low ranking after 10 mins, but after 30 it had drawn me back in. Part of me still thinks my initial judgement of repetitive nonsense was correct; but a different part of me thinks I had my horizons expanded all those years back. Either way, I apparently still enjoy this kind of thing.
Known this album for a long time due to HALCYON + ON + ON, never listened to it in full before. I was missing out to be honest, absolutely sweet acid sounds and good breakbeat. Solid 4/5.
eu quando o acorde muda depois de 10min ouvindon esse album: OKAAYYY
muito bom mas preciso escutar mais eletrônica techno e afins
An energetic electronic album that keeps a great atmosphere. At times it feels like it's flossing the mind and then sends you into a grooving night club. Walk Now... is an easy favorite from this record, easing in and out of chaos retaining a steady driving beat and bass line. 1hr + but felt like it just flew by, great listen!
When I heard the first track I thought… yes, I’m gonna LOVE this. In the middle of the album, I began to slowly get bored of the repetitive tracks. However, when Halcyon started playing I instantly recognised the melody and my love for it. This was electronic at its peak and it got me thinking how albums like this would have sounded much better while being drunk in an underground rave during the 90s. This album has been the best album I’ve listened to on this website so far and it’s reminded me of the diversity of electronic music, which I love so deeply. Also, I especially love how the album gives a futuristic, galaxy-like aesthetic, (although it is in the band’s name)
I love weird albums like this
I can see this entire album being played in the background while experience a laser/planetarium experience where you just sit back and enjoy the ride. Also, be at a rave and dance. I like it. HALCYON + ON + ON is so nostalgic. Heard it from the movie Mortal Kombat.
This is probably best experienced in a dingy french club in the late 90s, but I still found it a very enjoyable electronica album. Some great grooves and loops on here, it’s very repetitive but that’s to be expected. Would recommend throwing this on in the background while you’re doing something, and you’ll probably have more fun with it than if you try to sit down and devote all your attention to it.
Day 10 Orbital 2 (The Brown Album) by Orbital I’m not really that familiar with electronic or ambient music. I’ve listened to some of the bigger stuff like Aphex Twin and Daft Punk, and maybe Kid A, but I’ve never really gone deeper than that. So going into this, and after seeing some reviews, I was a bit worried. The first track starts and it’s basically a two-minute loop of “time becomes a loop” and I thought, yeah… this might be rough. But then “Planet of the Shapes” kicks in and something just clicks. From there I was actually really into it. I listened to this after a 12-hour work day, which sounds like the worst possible time for an album like this, but I ended up enjoying it a lot. At points I even felt like dancing, which I definitely didn’t expect. There’s some really beautiful, experimental ambient stuff here. It can get a bit repetitive, but I never felt bored. There are a lot of great moments throughout. “Lush 3-1”, “Impact (The Earth Is Burning)” and especially “Halcyon + On + On” were all fantastic. Wine pairing? Something crisp and clean like a dry Riesling or even a sparkling wine. It fits the flowing, slightly hypnotic feel of the album. Food pairing? Fresh ceviche works perfectly. Light, fresh, a bit vibrant. Favourite song? “Halcyon + On + On”. It’s a 3.5 for me, but I’ll round it up to 4 out of 5.
oh wow if only im in a nightclub. but the limitation of places that im hearing this could only grant it a 4 4/5
4/5. Electronic music is probably my biggest musical blind-spot. I listen to and love some of the biggest acts such as Aphex Twin or Daft Punk, but I’ve never really gone deeper than the surface level into the many artists and sub-genres of electronic. So this Orbital album (often referred to as “The Brown Album”) was completely new to me. And I really liked it, there’s a great sense of flow to the album and a ton of great instrumental passages to get lost in. my favorite songs were probably “Remind” and “Halycon and on and on.”
i'm surprised by myself that i like this cheesy dance mix quite a lot. but what can i do...
The first track goes on too long for me to just put the album on and enjoy. I'd have to skip most times. The rest is solid and I love Halycylon + on + on. Going low
It is amazing the uptick in British electro from 1993. This album is at point’s euphoric. Low 4
It seems to get better as it goes along, or maybe i was hypnotized 😵💫
It takes a little too long to get going, but once it does, Orbital 2 is great. I quickly admired their confidence in how long they spent with each idea, slowly tweaking, introducing new elements and building until they grew into monstrous forces of propulsion, endlessly moving forward. You feel like you’re in safe hands, being delivered one driving beat after another. It does the opposite of a typical pop record in that it ends on its very best material, but because of this, and the album’s evolution, they more than earn the 65 minute running time.
Orbital 2 is getting a high 4, its my kind of acid techno and i think some of its good, most of it is great, and one or two tracks are perfect
Not usually a fan of Techno / Dance, but I've always liked Orbital. For me, the best track on the album is "Remind".
Solid electronica that feels very much of its time. Halycon is probably the most widely known song from Orbital, yet I found other tracks to be better. Surprising to see so many harsh reviews about this album.
I am by no means an expert on this sort of music, but I enjoyed it. It's light dance music, but it's up-tempo, melodic and not repetitive. It's not demanding, but it's bouncy and pleasant. This is something I definitely wouldn't mind having on while I'm doing work or driving around in the car.
Pretty good
If Halcyon + On + On can make it on to the Mortal Kombat, Hackers and Mean Girls OST it deserves a 4
I always liked Halcyon. The rest sounded like a sonic the hedgehog music so I was very into it. Probably a 3.7
A nice techno album from the early years. Favorite Songs: Halcyon + On + On
I’ve never done drugs or gone to a rave, but maybe I should? I had never heard of this before, and I liked it a lot.
conflicted because I was so tranced out by this album that i barely even know what i just listened to, but also thats kind of the point of trance music. kind of null complaint i guess. theres some really cool segments on this album, i won't remember them, but if some put this on i would tell them to turn it off. its cool to listen to.
weird shit
An absolute hit
I liked it a lot but I know this won’t be for everyone. It sounds very much like Trent Reznor’s film score work.
I liked it, made me think of desert temples and those arcade racing games. Quite windy.
Spacey dance music that has great atmospheric soundscapes. It has almost a punk vibe to it. Not the type of record I would just throw on at home, but for a party or at the club this would be a hit. Even though I wouldn't buy this I can appreciate it, any EDM fan should check it out.
Bangers
I started listening to some Orbital after they popped up on the list a while back and I really like them. They have a playful approach to techno. This album has the big thumping bass beats, but it also has fun futuristic bleeps and bloops and weird synth sounds that hook me as much as the beat. This album is a delight and it gets better as it goes on.
Really enjoyable ambient / techno / edm from the early 1990's. Something I find funny is that in the biggest track, "HALYCON + ON + ON", there's an audible break in the drum sample loop in the first half of the song, almost like they added this loop into the track and the BPM of the entire song is just slightly different; creating this little hiccup. Not a negative at all, in fact I find it quite "real". I like a lot about this. The production is nice, the tunes are a joy to listen to, and even the album art is consistent with this style at the time. I knew what to expect.
This starts a bit slow but then becomes really engaging. The extended/delux version was pretty good as well
Really cool
4 stars
First listened on 28th July 2025. Favourite song is HALCYON + ON + ON.
Large it. Throwing some great shapes.
This one surprised me. I didn’t want to like it, but listened to it twice and will definitely come back. Really innovative and takes you away from reality
I enjoyed this album on first listen. I didn’t like both the tracks that just repeated the same words over and over, but it’s a minor nitpick because imo it's there not to be heard as actual tracks, but to add onto this album's overall feel. Fav song is IMPACT (The Earth Is Burning), least fav is PLANET OF THE SHAPES.
It's a real shame to see that Orbital aren't getting much love on here. I carry a level of bias as this is music I grew up around, that has always been part of my life, but I genuinley belive that the Hartnols made some of the most beautiful, human and heartfelt music in the 90s. This record lacks some of the progressivness that elevates their other records, but still stands as a wonderful LP with a lot to love.
Splendid, just splendid.
Good to fall asleep to
What a great electronic/edm album, it was refreshing to hear honestly. I lost track of myself while listening to this album, it was a great listen. Personally favorite off the album was Halcyon & Lush 3.1/3.2

I liked this but it's because I was the right age at the right time to experience it. It's pure nostalgia (for me) based dance music meant to keep a driven BPM going for hours and to keep a dancefloor full. I think with that in mind, it succeeds. It may sound almost generic but Orbital were the pioneers and hit makers in this short lived but wildly popular genre. It captures a lot of that 90's dance aesthetic that isn't poppy, but not quite up it's own ass, yet still sophisticated, etc, etc.
Niet verwacht, wel gewaardeerd
I listened to this on my commute, and to be honest, I was reading my book knowing it was the type of music that could provide a perfect background, but it wasn’t until I got off my train and really listened that I really started to realise how good it is, although, that could also be coincidence with probably the best track coming on on in Impact. The repetitive, looped intro and outro, are slightly annoying to be honest, and it’s quite long as an album, but I didn’t mind that as both Orbital albums on the list have been enjoyable to me, they are easy to get lost in.
I enjoyed what I heard. Certainly influential in the electronic world of music but also a little dated. Overall worth a listen.
"Orbital" (also known as "Orbital 2" or "The Brown Album") is the second studio album by English electronic music duo Orbital. Techno and dance are the Wiki-listed genres. The duo aimed for more atmospheric music than their "dance rave" debut. And the duo is brothers Phil and Paul Hartnell. Commercially, the album reached #13 on the UK charts and had wide-spread critical acclaim. "Time Becomes" opens with an echoing vocal sample of "Star Trek: The Next Generation's" Worf repeating "where time becomes a loop." A techno dance beat and a synth melody. The sound gets louder. There's a dance break and the synth goes dreamy and psychedelic. A high-pitched phasing synth keys and a knocking beat begins "Planet of the Shapes." Dreamy, layered synths. The song slowly develops a dance beat. More of the techno beats, looping synths and electronic songs carry "Remind." Spiraling synths and ominous, serious synths. A harder edge almost guitar sounding synth. The first single "Halcyon + On +On" starts with a dreamy synth intro and piano keys. Kirsty Hacksaw's vocals are layered and dreamy adding to the atmosphere. A dance beat eventually comes in. The most pop-sounding song on the album. Techno, trippy, hypnotic, and psychedelic. The beats are varied. There's synth noises, synth carrying the melody and synths layered. The music is techno and rave at its core and successfully builds with the dreamy, psychedelic, droning and complex synth arrangements. A few songs have movie dialogue samples which are fine. This is a very good album especially in the techno/EDM genres. And if you're a fan of those, this is a must listen.
Most pleasant instrumental album this far. Great music for certain kinds of work or exercise.
I never really listened to Orbital, besides a couple songs on soundtracks in the 90's. However, I do really like the couple albums on this list, as a fan of 90's electronic music. It's not anything revelatory for me, but it's very good, chill, and fun to listen to.
I’ll give this 4 stars. What do I care anyway
i had never heard this before and i almost gave it 5 stars... it was a bit too legit... i was scared by its legitness
I recall a lot of discussion of Orbital as a kid and I definitely remember rave culture dominating the news. My understanding is that this dropped not long before the Criminal Justice Act came into being in the UK following the demonisation of the rave scene and put an end to the sort of unified rave culture as it existed which I think is something that should warrant significant reflection in the UK in 2026. The album itself is such a fantastic illustration of what was happening in 90s rave music and whilst I don't often consider Orbital to be the height of electronic music, their impact is undeniable and the album is such an easy listen. Each track takes its time to build and swell: each blooms as a distinct flower in the same garden. The layering is a straightforward guide to electronic music composition and I think people mistake that simplicity as being of less value, but even if you take the album out of time, there are lessons here to learn.
Første og siste sporet va uhorvelig irriteranes ganske raskt, og det innimellom dem va ikke kjempeimponeranes, men ikke fælt heller, så helt ok som bakgrunnsmusikk på en søndag.
I don't think I'll revisit this album much beyond a few outstanding tracks, but I think it works really well and sounds good - in fact, I would say that "Time Becomes" is a better song that many of the generic rock tracks on a lot of the mid-level albums on this list. That track is like Blue Monochrome by Yves Klein - many people may say it's pointless, but you can also find a near-infinite number of rhythms and meanings within a seemingly monochrome and/or monotone work. Not saying that I'm putting it in playlist rotation, but still. Halcyon is pretty unquestionable in its greatness though, I have to say.
This was a foundational album in my burgeoning interest in electronic music back in the mid 90s. Their Green album was a good start, but it almost sounded too dated when I first heard it way back then. This Brown album, however, is still as excellent as I remember finding it then. This is not their pinnacle. That would come a few years later with In/Sides and Middle of Nowhere. But this is still an album that I pull out every few months.
7/10
This does dance music really well.
Mochte die vocal loops am Anfang nicht so aber passen thematically, ansonsten guter casual listen 4.5/5.0
Foundational electronic album. Not as good as Eno, but imagine being in the UK rave scene in the 90s and this just knocks you on ur arse. Must have been special.
More orbital, reminds me of the soundtrack to the wipeout games. Interesting and futuristic sounding, shades of prodigy, actually quite liked a lot of this. Bit repetitive but that's kind of the point I suppose. Good example of a genre I'm not totally keen on. 3.5.
The first song is kinda lame, but once it gets started, it is excellent. I get the negative reviews, as the album doesn't really shine until it's played loud with a system that can handle deep low bass. Most of the musical counterpoint is down very low and relatively clean, so if you cannot properly project those frequencies and it is not loud enough for contrast, it just kinda sounds like bad Muzak.
3.7 A rather enjoyable exploration of early 90s British electronica. Like a more radio/pop-friendly version of Autechre, AFX etc. not something I've listened to before but quite enjoyed, pretty clear the stand out track is Halcyon. Some of the others were a bit miss but maybe my score is reflective of recency bias given it ends pretty well
The Star Trek sample at the very beginning tells you where it's going to go: this album is spacey. A lot of tracks have synth pads almost reminiscent of ambient music and there's stretches where the track will just be drums and those synths, allowing your mind to wander freely with your feet still planted firmly on the floor before being called back in by one groove or another. This is most obvious on electronic classic "Halcyon and On and On" but also on "Planet of the Shapes" and "Lush 3-2" honestly. I wouldn't really call the end result psychedelic, but more dreamlike; not the vibrant colors of 2001: A Space Odyssey but maybe more like floating in blank antigravity. But Orbital isn't here to leave you content in that state for too long: these tracks pulse just as much too, especially other electronic classic "Lush 3-1" but also on tracks like acid workout "Remind". The final product as such goes in a lot of different directions, ending up in the same universe as other 90s rave records but doing something pretty different in the process.
Love Orbital, though this one isn't my favourite of theirs
So precious. It’s crazy how groundbreaking this album was and now it’s boring.
This was fun and weird (positive). The last track being the strangest one works for me, it's like I listen to some pretty fun stuff and then a weird little guy is there at the end to see me off.
Fun club music. “I would put this on while I work.”
Orbital sampling Sydney pedestrian crossing signals way before Billie Eilish. Throwback to raves in Uni days and attempting similar sampling techniques in my “audio” classes. 4/5
Thoroughly enjoyed this album, great production choices and nice beats, jot much misses here
Synes den begynner litt kjedelig; setter heller på Steve Reich om jeg vil høre phasing-experimenter! Men så fort Lush 3-1 begynner er det cerebral techno fra øverste hylle. Peaken er selvfølgelig Halcyon and On and On, som er en tidløs klassiker.
Does this earnest strain of techno-futurism still live? Forgive me, I’m long out of touch. This is a cracking set, fun and roomy - lots of space to enjoy each element in. “IMPACT (The Earth Is Burning)” stands out both for its lithe shifts and the title’s charmingly idealism; it’s fun listening to this a day after “Nevermind”, close in time, galaxies apart in intention. Nirvana’s sounds are nearer to my core, but my sentiment now prefers the Orbital Bro cyber-hippies. Proportionally, I reckon far fewer arseholes love Orbital than Nirvana.
Don't think there's a group that is as aptly named as this one. I felt in orbit
Reminded me of a lot of music I've heard in the past, including the Rescue Heroes theme. I also found the use of repeating, desynced phrases a very intriguing listen.
Good, but some of the songs remind of the Anti-piracy ad - Piracy. It’s a crime. from the early 2000s.
4.1/probably the type of music that people hate in certain contexts but i heavily fw it
IMPACT // MONDAY // 3.5/5
Love halycon
I was supremely blessed to wander into an Orbital live set at a little music festival in Asheville NC about 15 years ago and it was incredible. Listening to their music, especially HALCYON + ON + ON takes me back there and makes me feel connected to all the other heads that have vibed out to this over the last 22 years and I love that. Very pleased to have gotten this one today, will certainly listen again. 4.4/5
Hypnotic beats, mind bending textures and crazy rhythms. I was listening to it on the way home a bit drunk and high and it made me feel like I was in an action movie.
This is pretty good. Good to drive to and workout too. Does get a not too repetitive in parts but it bounces most of the time
A lot better than I thought seeing as how I only knew Halycon on and on.
Been a fan for y ars!
Ahead of its time.
Quite literally the perfect background working music. Favourite Songs: Lush 3-1, Impact (The Earth Is Burning), Remind, Halcyon + On + On. Least Favourite Songs: Planet of the Shapes, Walk Now....
Excellent instrumental, except the last track.
Loved! Made me feel like a bee dancing.
Good
I remember buying this when it was first released. I loved it then and I still love it now. Great album.
nss nss nss nss
great stuff, enjoyed a lot.
Really good, 4
Absolut nicht meine Musik - aber hat was hypnotisches!
At first I was taken aback by the meandering dialogue but by the time the album ended it was full out dance time.
Experimental
Interesting and enjoyable.
I might’ve just been in the perfect mood, but I really enjoyed this. Techno is very much not my genre but I was bopping to every song on Orbital 2
Groovy, fun. 90s dance is often excellent
A really fun electronic/house/dance album. Perfect to put in the background while gaming.
This music smells like cocaine.
Techno isn't something I'd normally stick on bit, if I did, this is what I'd want from it. Well constructed album & actually really enjoyed it.
i want to take part in a futuristic fashion show with this entire album as the soundtrack. the beats are so cool. idk why i procrastinated listening to this but this is gonna become my go to electronic album, more accessible than depeche mode i think (even though i prefer depeche mode)
Optimistic early rave, simple, DIY, upliftingly naive. There was a sliver of hope I think in the mid 90s and you can feel it. Makes me think of Trainspotting, the orgazoid, and the future current doom-music mourns. Like Burial or bicep seek to be yearning for a time where the future seemed tomopen and inviting. Instead, we have puffy chested hysterical racists flapping their tatty rags.
I listened to this for the first time a couple of years ago. I love it, and I don't even really listen to techno like that. But anything with creative, well-executed sampling grabs my attention and holds it. Lush 3.1 is my favorite track, but the didgeridoo always deserves a shout-out. From Wiki: "Walk Now..." samples the sound of a Sydney zebra crossing alert and a didgeridoo, which were both recorded after a trip to Australia to perform at an illegal rave named Welcome 92." Haha, awesome.
Starts with Worf, so already a winner. Can sound a little dated and a little unvaried, but still plenty of solid beats and rhythms. First Orbital album is better though. 3.5 - rounded up Heard before? Yes, a long time ago Owned: No. 1/1001, 1/11 (8.5%) Will I get? No Recommend: Sure
There's a really great electronic album in here that is unfortunately dragged down by a few weak tracks. The section from "Lush 3.1" to "REMIND" seems to be telling the story of a massive disaster, which is very cool. I'll give this one the benefit of the doubt. Favorite tracks: "Lush 3.1," "HALCYON + ON + ON," "IMPACT"
Great
They really reached the pinnacle of their genre. Fantastic record.
Crumpet is right
A interesting piece of IDM. For me not their best album but a solid collection all the same. The newly released extended version has some excellent additions.
Trancy. Good slow music. 4/5
I was slightly surprised to recognize one of the songs for sure, maybe two of them, as I wouldn't have said I knew anything by Orbital before listening to the record. I'm assuming it made it on a soundtrack or similar. In general I like this sort of thing. Ambient music with a beat, or maybe more accurately, EDM without it being ridiculously high energy and over the top. It's good for things like driving or as background music when playing games. I think this is a solid representative of the genre and the sort of thing that a lot of folks -- who are open to electronic music -- might like.
Undoubtedly good songs. Not a big fan of the intro, it felt more like an experiment than something worthy of an album song but I guess they thought it created a mood. I couldn’t listen to the whole thing in one go but there isn’t a bad song on it and orbital clearly have talent. Great background stuff and I could imagine clubbing to it too.
нормалек, люблю такие вещи.
Solid EDM. Great for a dance workout or simulator video game. Beautiful in the background.
Matrix ass album
Big fan of electronic music, but hadn’t listened to this. I get why it’s a classic
Interesting album…I liked it!
Aka The Brown Album. A perfect distillation of early 90s rave, and half taken over by one continues mix of Lush, Impact and Remind. If I'm honest, probably not my favourite Orbital album or tracks, but it does encapsulate a moment. Starting and ending with Alvin Lanier style loops, letting arrangements flow rather than fitting regular song structures - it's not necessarily an easy listen in places. One more track of the like of Belfast, Satan, One Perfect Moment, Chime...etc and it would be a 5*. All this aside, as a piece of art, it deserves to be here
I thought i was going to hate Orbital 2 but it was a surprisingly very good album. I guess since the last electronica album (Timeless by Goldie for those of you who are wondering) left a bad taste in my mouth, I thought that this album was going to be an overly repetitive slog but i was pleasantly surprised. A lot of the songs here were incredibly catchy and didn't get too repetitive despite their long lengths. There were also some cool ideas on display like Walk Now sampling an Australian pedestrian crossing light. It also felt like this album went by quite a lot quicker than their other album on this project (mainly because it was shorter). The first and last songs are definitely something that really should have been cut down but despite that, This was a great album. Best Song: Monday Worst Song: Input Out
Excellent. Good for working to.
Crazy sound, very sci-fi
Hell yeah, I was jamming hard to this
Kino.
I was so happy to revisit this one. Some of the best of techno and definitely a full album experience.
I mostly feel similarly with this album as I did to Snivilization. Both great albums! I don't think I prefer this one quite as much, but it has some truly standout tracks. I also liked the polyrhythm thing they did at the start and end. Pretty cool! Favorite Track: HALCYON + ON + ON
Straight from earth into orbit
Oh I KNOW people gonna hate this album to pieces, don’t even need to look at the reviews to see that. Beautiful 90’s electronica with nice choice of sampling, great drums, and gets better with every song. I knew it would be a baller album when the “when time becomes a loop” bit played for 2 minutes in the nice stereo sound bit at the VERY START OF THE ALBUM. crazy producers like to do crazy things to almost gatekeep their albums from the folk who wouldnt like it haha.
Fantastic.
Orbital is a British duo that made techno that combined elements of trance and break-beat rhythms. Their first two albums were untitled, and have come to be known as #1 and #2, or the Green and Brown albums, respectively. Orbital 2, the Brown Album, is regarded as the band's best work, and one of the best dance albums of all time. Orbital became well known for their live shows, in part, for the improvisational approach they take to their performances. These are great dance tracks, with impressive range for techno.
So repetitive ..... not sure how to get into the trance of it, but I keep feeling intrigued by it.
Tool some time to get into. It's minimalistic but also feels ahead of it's time? Definitely a different path than Aphex Twin. 4-
his was supe cool, some o my keys hae sopped wokin which is onna mess up his eiew a i ho...
Funky
What a fun listen! Really loved the use of samples “Time Becomes a Loop” feels almost hallucinatory. Really loved the two Lush tracks and Halcyon. Fun listen, definitely will listen to this again and check out more of their discography
Dope
Still not worked out what old, bald blokes are what when it comes to 90s, British duos that also happen to be pioneers of electronic music and have orb in their name. Like it though.
fenomenal musikresa från början till slut, känns som nåt slags kärleksbarn till Pink Floyd och Jean-Michel Jarre. Loopade albumet flera gånger då det flöt på väldigt bra. Inte långt ifrån full pott.
Great old school electronica. Endlessly charming in its simplicity and probably a gargantuan pain in the arse to put together with the technology of the day. The genius of it is that they wanted to make a proper album and understood that just transposing their live set to a CD wouldn’t cut it. So you get glimpses of the sweaty club bangers they were partial to but tempered (not unlike Burial) with long sections of twinkling ambience bordering on Hawkwind and Eno, with a proper intro and outro and a vague running theme of ‘space and stuff’. This one was made with headphones and introspection in mind and it still works a treat even now.
this thing fucks
Love Orbital. Do not think this is their strongest album but still very strong.
I find it hard to listen to electronic duos (especially when they're brothers) without the comparison, maybe unfairly, to Boards of Canada. But I think it would be fair to theorise that this album took hardcore and rave music and helped develop it into something more thoughtful and ambient - this is paving the way for the IDM of Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. Even though oftentimes I felt like I needed dual 18-inch subwoofers, a bottle of water and a day-glo whistle, to fully immerse myself in its merits. And, at over an hour long, it feels like some medicinal powder is also beneficial to get in the zone proper. But whereas the Prodigy where in your face aggression and fast beats, Orbital works at a reduced tempo. The album lends itself to listening rather than just dancing off your mash. Songs like 'HALCYON + ON + ON' have slow builds and atmosphere (even getting away with going toe to toe with Opus III's 'Its a Fine Day' classic). The tracks have something far beyond their utility simply for the dancefloor. I don't think it has the complexity, layers or sophistication of BoC, but this is consistently a very atmospheric album.
Wacky but halcyon saved the last star for me
Vibe
Smooth and trancey. A nice little listen
Love the bookmarked songs. Was a quick hour plus and a shame I didn’t know about the album as a whole before.
Neato
Vibey instrumental dance. Really liked the high end melodic stuff. Another one not going into rotation but was really vibing with it. Where are the clubs that are playing this? Probably no where near me, they don’t have the balls!
This was fantastic. Brain stimulating, intriguing, varied 90s ambient/ acid house I have a lot of time for
Oof, this thing is showing me that I am more of a raver than I ever would have thought. Love this. Much better than their other offering on here. Almost makes it to a 5, might well do over time but there isn’t quite enough variety for me a la Leftfield etc
Good electronic album, enjoyed it quite a bit. Will listen more.
This started a bit shakily, but really grew as the album went on, finishing with a couple of really quite beautiful tracks.
Decent album.
Another band that represents the soundtrack of the best years of my life. Orbital were a constant presence in our playlists, and any pub or club we ever went to would probably play one or more of their tracks. The opening track is annoying - but if you've heard the bands debut album you would see why it's there. Otherwise it's a great example of the early 90's dance scene in the UK. I get why people may not like it though.
Halcyon and On and On is the star of the show for sure, such a beautiful track front to back. Rest held up as well, but that one track really carried my opinion of the whole record up.
Great experience. I liked the atmosphere of the album the best
Kinda hypnotic.
That was new to me, and I liked it so much I listened to it all day.
Eletronica which sometimes felt normal mg for it's repetitiveness and sometimes exhiliarating (from atmospheric headphone music to meatier dance material). I couldn't make up my mind how to rate this album (3 or 4 stars). I guess I'll revisit so IT gets 4 stars!
brilliant
Fab
It’s been a long, long time. There’s some good stuff here. This was pretty widely influential. Techno music was designed to be layered and mixed into other songs. This was done live on turntables by brilliant DJs. As compelling as this can be at times, it is, by its very nature, missing something. There’s supposed to be another song woven around and through each track. This is mostly a set of building blocks for creative college kids to dick around with in their basements. Complete the scene with glow sticks and X-tasty. This inspired enough artists to merit 4/5.
Very solid high tempo EDM album. It's trippy without being too abstract. There were a few moments where it felt a little too repetitive but overall, it was a good listen.
Somehow, love and hate this at the same time

I only knew the song Halcyon And On And On from having the Mortal Kombat soundtrack on cassette as a kid and that song still holds up. I enjoy the progression that Orbital songs have and didn't even mind the long song lengths. Way better than Daft Punk
Pretty good album. I liked the mix of space vibes and eastern sounds.
Thought this was kind of cool.
I really like music like this and will listen again. The song Lush 3.1 reminded me of the music on the Nintendo DS Game Zenses which I haven't thought about in forever!
A couple oddball tracks, but overall a pretty solid listen, electronic vibes, album.
I thouroughly enjoyed something completely different from the usual types of albums on this list, if you take away the first and last tracks it would get 5 stars, but with those two I gotta take away one star.
Fun techno album. The intro and outro are a little jarring, but they mesh with the overall aesthetic.
Paar heel vage dingen, maar over het algemeen best echt lachen
Loved this so much. Full of bangers
Weep weep wobble wooble. I feel like this got me through many a comedown before I had the sense not to get that fucked. Serve with a extra large duvet, leftover takeaway and mindless computer games set to easy mode.
Club drums, mystic sounds, And mechanical time loops Forms dance hypnosis
Nice
A little weird at the intro/outro, but started getting into it halfway through planet of the shapes. I can vibe with this, 4*
Way better than I thought it would be
I don't have much in the way of detail to put here, but I really enjoyed this album for all that it is. Listened to it straight through 3 times, and found it to be fantastic focus music. Perfect mixture of non-distracting and stimulating. Walk Now... is one that stood out to me among the rest. Love the didgeridoo drone with the back and forth synth line on top. Made for a weirdly bright, but aggressive club track with a tribal/animalistic tone. Monday ditches that completely for some stripped down keys (in the vein of Fatboy Slim) upon which various elements are layered one after another. Halcyon and On and On alone is worth the ride -- surprising that they buried it so deep in the track list. It reminds me initially vaguely of Sigur Ros with the breathy non-verbal vocals but eventually gets back to the dancefloor with a pretty standard high-hat/snare rhythm. This was fantastic and I'm glad for the ride. Strong 4.
Certain albums have 80s cheese. This album has 90s electronic cheese. It took a second for me to settle into this one, but if you throw on some headphones and just get shit done around the house, this is a good album to pick. Obviously repetitive given the nature of the genre, but I think they did really well with the sound design and variety to keep it fresh. I listened to this in two parts and I'll tell you it feels very different at 7pm compared to 7am. Don't know if I would deep dive Orbital again, but I could see myself throwing this album again to focus. My third high four in a row.
Techno Techno Bloody Techno Darling!
3.8 1x in airport boarding to SFO
Good but only on the dancefloor.
I enjoyed this album. I’m partial to a bit of EDM, and this has some lovely chilled out vibes, some nice beats. I’d listen again.
I enjoy their tracks and appreciate what they created, but think there are better producers out there from that era (e.g. Autechre)
'90s electronica will always be nostalgic.
-this is grade a techno. Repetitive enough to put you in a sort of mental trance, but layered and exciting enough to not be boring. some of the songs were definitely better than others but it was pretty consistently good -Favorites are Planet Of The Shapes, Lush 3-1, and Halcyon and On and On
I really enjoyed this. Yes, it was pleasant background music to what I was doing listening to it but it was good. 4*
Love their sound
I've mentioned this before on other albums but there's definitely so level of disconnect when trying to appreciate electronic dance music on a weekday morning. Orbital almost certainly sounds better in the club, with flashing lights and perhaps some alcohol. Orbital makes music for DJs looking to spin the best techno they can find for their next mix. Having listened to it in my home office on a Wednesday morning, I can say that this is some pretty tight techno! Most of the album maintains a solid energy until the penultimate track when it switches to a more ambient sound. Halcyon really elevates this from a really good album to a great album.
Очень необычно, но когда слушаешь альбом подряд давит на мозг
Not raving but drowning!
This album is leaps and bounds better than the other one of theirs I had on here (Snivilisation). This one has a solid back beat and actually accomplishes something instead of just flailing needlessly. I actually didn't mind this album. There is a compilation of 4 songs on this album that all run together and kinda form 1 long song (Lush 3-1, Lush 3-2, Impact (The Earth is Burning), Remind) . Kinda neat. Favourite songs: Remind, Lush 3-2, Lush 3-1, Impact (The Earth is Burning), Walk Now..., Monday Least favourite songs: Time Becomes, Planet of the Shapes, Input Out 4/5
Un album qui témoigne d'une grande recherche et d'une habileté sur le plan de la composition. On explore le passage du lourd et martelé au léger et aérien
YES FINALLY SOME GOOD SHIT. GIMME TECHNO BABY 4*.
Some decent Electronica here. I even liked the phased intro and outro.
If you told me that Orbital made the soundtrack to every Sega game circa 1990-2001 I would believe you, no questions asked. I mean that as a compliment. This felt good, seratonin provided in a way that makes me think of dolphins vs aliens (Ecco), rollerskating youths doing graffiti (Jet Set Radio), or calling police with bazookas in on street gangs (Streets of Rage). Ironic for songs featured in a Mortal Kombat film. Still, the good stuff.
I'd heard rumors about how tough a listen this was, but honestly I felt it was pretty enjoyable. The electronic elements keep you on your toes and you aren't sure what the next segment of the song will sound like. The repetitive intro and outro segments are great. On this list, an easy 4/5.
Very different
Songs can be stressful if not in right mood
A lot of mixed reviews here, but I really enjoyed this. The first and last song were somewhat a test of patience but it fit with the style and theme, like an eclipse of phrases. 4/5
interesting, very early in the electronic movement at 92. Would listen again
most electronic music is annoying and pretentious to me. Orbital is one of the few that I like. I have mostly heard their songs on soundtracks but I dig all of this except for the last song.
Imagine how innovative this must have sounded back in 1993, it's really a pioneer album. I don't care much about the intro and outro (though it sounds good with headphones on) but the rest are really good. Halcyon On And On is one of my favorite songs from that era.
4/5
This is a great discovery!
EDM! I should have listened to more Orbital. Still sounds fresh, even with sp many synths.
3.75
Halcyon and on and on and on and becomes a loop and on becomes a loop and on and on a loop and on becomes a halcyon loop a halcyon loop and on a halcyon loop and on and on and on and on and becomes an on and becomes an on and on and becomes an on and on and on becomes a Halcyon loop. Fave Tracks: Lush 3-1, Halcyon and On and On 3.8/5
Bit of a mixed bag, I really like some parts
I'm glad to see some ambient electronic music on this list. It's nothing mind-blowing, but gets extra points for being one of the only experimental albums I've heard that still holds up after 30 years.
Perfect music to chill, and to play during complicated programming work.
Didn't like the first two but I liked Lush 3-1, Lush 3-2 and Impact (The Earth Is Burning). The rest of the songs were better than the first two as well, so overall a good album and a nice change pace to what I usually listen to.
