Reviews (page 4 of 8)
The Intro and Outro were dumb. But the rest was ok!
Even though this album is fairly repetitive (especially with the opening and closing tracks), it was such a good dance/electronic album. For listening to this album whilst studying, it was a good mix of repetitive and new ideas.
It wasn’t terrible- a bit repetitive and some awful tracks but the actual music ones were alright to listen to in the background. I feel you need to be high to fully appreciate it.
It's fine! Maybe it was revolutionary for the time. Added Halcyon+On+On to my ambient/work playlist.
That's not my taste in music, but ok.
Experimental techno like
I liked it. Though I'd love to hear a fan of this record explain the artistry behind having your entire opening track be 1m 43s of a man say 'when time becomes a loop'. Not a great foot to get off on. The rest is good bar a few more irritating moments. 'MONDAY' being a highlight.
Not usually my kind of thing, but I found myself getting lost in a lot of these beats. I don’t really have a bad word to say (which is pretty rare for me with this kind of music). A pleasant listen if you’re in the right headspace and don’t want any distractions. ✨
What a trip. I’m not really into EDM, but it was cool to hear something so different. A long, spacey ride with some genuinely beautiful moments.
It's an interesting album but electronic music is not something I'm usually interested in
Really enjoyed this one. I wasn’t sure. Some songs could have been a bit shorter, but overall it got me grooving and I liked it a hell of a lot.
You know those randomisers they do on AGDQ where like, everytime sonic picks up a ring it swaps from sonic 1 to 2 to Boom to 2016? It’s like each track it swaps from wipeout to Rez to the PS1 demo disk music
First and last song: RUBBISH...second song not quite into it...Afterwards I cranked up the volume and really got into this stuff...unexpeceted!
ya know, I actually liked it, with out any K. It is what you expect so if looking of techno dance this is it
Elektronista musiikkia, tämmöistä kevyttä ysäri teknoa. Ihan hyvä tunnelma vaikka vähän käy toistavaksi. Avaruusmainen fiilis. Kappaleet vaihtuu sulavasti ja yhtenäisesti toiseen. Oikeestaan ihan kova :D Parhaat: Remind, Lush 3.1, Halcyon + On + On
Pioneering techno stuff by the brothers. A real go to album for me when I went get somewhere fast!
Get past the first song. Listen to it all. It grows on you. Not first choice but at least understand the appeal.
I think I found this album more appealing than the rest of the EDM albums I’ve listened to previously. I’m not exactly sure why but this one just felt like there was more depth and layers to it. There were some psychedelic aspects to it which I enjoyed, but some goofy sounds too which I was like bruh. Mostly only instrumental.
Techno - for everyone who likes it....
Oväntat behagligt!
First and last tracks aside, turned this up and waheyy!!
That was fun. Pleasant background music for the workday, bookended by two looped vocal tracks. Felt video gamey so I think I connected more than I did with the other electronic albums I’ve hard on here recently. Shoutout to my man Worf.
Favorite tracks: REMIND, HALCYON + ON + ON. Nice stuff, vibey, hypnotic. I like that it opens with a Worf quote.
My favorite version of "Halcyon and on and on" is the live version from their 1996 album IN SIDES. Other than that track, this is a good electronica album, but not a great one.
Ikkje så dumt, men ikkje så minneverdig heller
I've got some rose tinted glasses for this album, as I used to listen to it a lot. The stand out track by a mile is "Halcyon and On and On" which still holds up incredibly well, as seen by the number of appearances during film epilogues. The song perfectly captures the feeling of hope and security after the heros have saved the day. It's a gorgeous track and surely the best one Orbital ever produced. The rest doesn't quite stand up to the test of time, despite time being an overarching theme of the album. The opening and closing of the album are fairly dull studio experiments with spoken word loops and phase shifting. They're fine but you're left hoping they'll get on with it. The bulk of the album sees Orbital expanding their abilities from their early rave days, with more atmospheric layers. They were ehavily influenced by Jack Dangers' Meat Beat Manifesto (who by the way should be on this list). It's a big step forward, if a bit repetitive. The songs generally work well as part of a dance mix, or as good background music. Unfortunately that's kind of it until you get to "Halcyon". It's definitely not a bad album but it's really not as impressive as I remember it when the novelty wears off. "In Sides" is still the better album.
I prefer The Orb.
Another weird electro
Yeah it's fine
Reasonably good listening but would be much better in a dance environment with reality augmentation.
Sounds like 90s hacking music.
Halcyon On and On is a great song, and part of one of my most beloved movies, Hackers. The rest of the album is fine.
Very atmospheric
Would of given it 2 stars but that second-to-last song single-handedly bumps it up to a 3
I've got to give this one props for actually having some good music in the middle. It sort of outsmarted me, in that the first and last tracks are kind of like tech demos and are just kind of annoying. However, I assume some of the same techniques were used in the middle songs, which were actually good. I wouldn't listen in album form again, but it wasn't as bad as I would have thought given the start.
This is way better than their last album that I got. This one is way more engaging, even if it is pretty repetitive by its nature. The beats and production are stronger and it's a good easy listen.
Grew on me as it went on. Not massively me but good on the genre
Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day
It was fine.
This album has a poor reception on this website. I can see why some people might hate it; repetition is everywhere on "Self-Titled". "Self-Titled" is a nice electronic record; the outro is uncalled for, though. There are some good beats here and there. To be honest, I prefer Underworld to Orbital. 3 stars for "Self-Titled".
Good I guess
Bonne musique d'arrière plan, mais oubliable à part ça.
Good focus music, knocked out some work during it. Don’t love the verbal loops but the rest was good.
Solid but nothing out of this world for me. Since songs are long, the ones that didnt interest me dragged.
Once you get past the annoying synching/unsynching opening and closing tracks, the rest of the album is really solid. Good beats. Halcyon is a standout
First and last tracks are tough, but otherwise it's fine electronic music. Nothing wild though
Feels really ahead of its time. This album really sounds like what a lot of electronic in the following decades would sound like, both good and bad. All the shitty beach club music sounds like it originated here. Can't blame an album for what it inspired though. This album on its own is a pleasant listen and doesn't really get boring despite its long runtime. It doesn't really have hooks or hits but I guess that isn't the point of the album. Still a bit boring and not entirely my cup of tea although I've been warming up to techno and house.
I liked this one. The spoken word looping is mesmerizing and interesting. I could see how it is not for everyone. This is a definitely listen to again. I did listen to this one on little sleep and a bit hungover on a plane trip home. So I might need to listen again when I'm more fully aware but I liked it.
Not really my kind of thing but I did enjoy it. Was repetitive but I guess that's the point. Reminded me of classic video game music.
The first half of this had me bored, I considered giving up. But I held out and from Remind till the end was really good. Halcyon and On and On is the best song on here, and a perfect closer. It was going to be a 2 for me based on the first half, but it hot bumped up to a three because it pulled through in the end.
Not my genre, but I enjoyed quite a bit of this album. I recognize Halcyon + On + On from the Hackers soundtrack.
C-
Obviously songs on here drag on way too long, but I still think the way this album creates a futuristic atmosphere is really cool. Whether it be the interludes, sound effects, or even just the song titles and covers.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. It’s a bit long, but as background ambient music it works.
First time listening to Orbital and honestly they're really chill. This makes me want to listen to more techno music. I could see myself recommending this album to people who are interested in the genre. Its nothing exceptional of course but I don't really have anything negative to say about it. Favorite track: Planet of Shapes
Solid background electronic music but hard to really get into it.
3/5. It feels like electronic dance music that you would play wile waiting for the main act. It's not necessarily bad, it just feels like it doesn't provide me with enough variety or interesting beats to get me up and moving. Mostly just nodding my head up and down. Checked back at my rating of their previous album and seems I felt the same way. Good but not great. Best Song: Lush 3-1, Halcyon And On And On, Planet Of The Shapes
5/10 - Remind kind of sounds like the pokemon sword and shield battle theme (I cannot remember which one) at parts. Unlike the last album there were no songs that I loved but there were still some songs that I did not really like. So overall it was worse, but not by that much.
I actually did like parts of this. There was some pretty cool stuff. Not much I’d ever want to revisit, but a fun listen
Another one I heard before, mainly during the time I was extremely into techno and idm yet it never left the strongest impression in me despite having such aclaimed songs like Halcyon and On and On. It's not bad by any means but I guess while its a good listen when its on, the rest really doesn't stick with me really. There's songs whose loops and sythpads can be a bit too repetitive like Planet of Shapes or Lush 3-1 which compared to Impact or Walk Now being proper acid techno/trance songs the former just feel so weak and make the album more uneven. Again not bad, essential for the history of techno but not my favorite or most memorable thing in the genre
Time becomes: This was annoying at first, but once I realized what was happening, it was super cool, then ultra satisfying when "it" happened. I don't think this song has much replayability though... Planet of the Shapes: cool. Primitive techno, but I think this was likely pretty advanced for the time. Not positive though, because at the time this came out, I was pretty much listening to Green Day, Jimi Hendrix, and Cypress Hill. I don't think I was even aware that electronic music existed at the time Lush 3-2: I liked this more than Lush 3.1 (which wasn't bad or anything). This just sounds much more like the techno I finally got into in the very early 2000s. I suppose that probably says something about Orbital as a band, perhaps having influenced other artists to come Impact: sort of anxiety-inducing around the 7 minute mark, and definitely so at the 9 minute mark Walk Now: super much enjoying the didgeridoo on this track. It fits very nicely, and was a great way to open the track I'm not sure if I'll come back to this album or not, but I'm glad I got to listen to it
Not bad. I could see how Orbital could set the stage for music that belongs in the Matrix. FS Halcyon on + on
I like orbital but this sounds as if it was made by a 4 year old with a 4 volt synth with some keys not working
I’m surprised I scored Snivilisation the way that I did, because I don’t remember anything positive about it. But I guess I don’t remember anything negative about it either. What I have learned is that traditional techno, like the kind developed in the mid-90s United Kingdom, is not for me. I just don’t see the appeal of it. Unfortunately I’ve had to hear a number of albums on this list in order to come to that conclusion. Not sure why it’s taken me so long. From what I read, this self-titled Orbital album was supposed to be one of their best. So I had expected at least something good. And I left feeling even less satisfied than the previous record. At least with that it was somewhat middle of the road, with a few peaks here and there. Even this album’s best stays pretty consistent at not being entertaining. I don’t know if I’ll ever not be worn out and exhausted by hour-long techno and electronic albums. Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada are the only ones that can get away with it in my book. Since the first song here isn’t really a song, the second track Planet of the Shapes is where things really get started. And I held out hope that in 9 minutes of music, I would hear something I liked. You know what the issue is? Cool noises for sure. But do they really have any purpose or direction other than floating in, out and around each other in circles? This seems to be the theme with every song. Too long and not enough going on. Although like the last album, the longest song is surprisingly the best one. Not sure how that works. Thankfully I don’t ever have to hear another album from Orbital, because clearly I’m not the target audience. Rating: 5/10
Normally wouldn't sit down and listen to this but it was pleasant as a background listen. 2.5/3
This isn't my bag usually but I put it on in the car and got pretty into it. Decent enough!
I feel like on the early orbital records they are still trying to figure out how to make music. There are some good tracks here but also some of them get annoying quickly. Time becomes being a prime example of where they are trying to be too clever with the delay of the loop constantly shifting until the loop is back in sync. Cool concept, annoying to listen too. Later records are better
Awesome in the right setting, 30 years on a sober Thursday morning commute is not that setting. Objectively not their finest hour but it is still a happy reminiscence.
Solid
Marginally better than their previous record
Significantly better than the other orbital project. Still not my favorite
What a musical journey that was! Not for me, but at times I was dancing at my desk like I was at a club or something, which should be an automatic +1 stars.
Weird how it kept repeating "Where time becomes a loop" for the entire first track. After reading on Wikipedia about their reasoning, it makes more sense to me, but still pretty annoying. The other songs were fine, with the Lush tracks as my favorites.
This fits with my memory. Orbital was all about the drug fueled rave. Fatboy Slim and Chemical Brothers understood the good bits of this, but also recognized that when listening to a CD, most people were not most commonly fully zonked on party drugs. This album makes for fun DJ rave fodder, but doesn't appeal to other listening. Other albums of the same genre were better crafted to pull this sound into a song and album structure. 3. It'd be a 5 if properly zonked. And probably a 1 if I didn't recognize how good it was at meeting it's niche where they were at.
Not my strongest genre, but seems like a pretty standard and basic techno/dance album. Just fine for sure, but not really my thing for 60+ minutes.
Out of my genre comfort zone, but I enjoyed this! Fave: Lush 3.1
3.5/5
Obviously "Halcyon and On and On" is a stone classic. Nothing else here is quite as good though this is still a solid early electronic album.
I feel like chemical brothers do a better job of being interesting without it feeling repetitive. But the repetition might the point?
Some pretty cool techno beats, but a little bit too long of techno beats for my liking. Each song was really cool in the beginning but got repetitive as they went on. Halcyon and On and On though I could listen to on repeat, that song was very trancey. I was trying to type this up as Input Out was playing with the crazy talking over and was seriously struggling to type because of the double talking. That was a really weird sensation.
Another album I would take ecstasy to in a warehouse in the 90's. Shit would be a vibe. Brown noise on Walk Now...! Never really seek stuff like this out but I def enjoy it when it's in front of me.
The songs on the electronic albums that pop up on this list tend to be hit or miss (miss in the sense of indifference) for the most part; but man, when they hit, they tend to hit hard. Lush 3-1 and Halcyon and On and On hit hard. (The rest is fine too, as background noise, with rare moments stealing your attention.)
more like a 2.5. Halcyon and on is such an iconic track and this is great background music when working but would never return to it just to listen.
I love electronic music but some of these songs were just annoying Walk Now... almost single handedly sank the score by 1 star
As I am sitting here in my home office nodding my head to Orbital 2 I begin to question my life choices. Why am I not completely wasted in an industrial warehouse, half blind from flashing lights and smoke, dancing to this?
Absolutely nothing special, but not bad at all either. Good background noise.
Sorta meh but actually pretty fantastic as background music to a Cyberpunk Red (TTRPG) game I’m running. So it’s got that going for it at least.
I wouldn’t say that I didn’t enjoy this, but it did start to feel a lil too repetitive towards the end and I don’t really like music without words too much. I really enjoyed a couple of the songs, though.
Pretty good. Spacey and old school electronic.
It's alright. A bit bland. Whole album revolves around Halcyon really. Probably great on a comedown back in the day but some of it is just annoying.
Kiertoradalla, mun kiertoradalla SÄ OOT MUN KIIERTORADALLAAAAAAA! pumptsig pumpumtisg pumptisg pumptsig Tämä albumi mainstream poppia, mainstream poppia ei mitään ole täällä älä kuuntele
The better Daft Punk, but still a bit of a head ache. Favourite track: Remind.
Easy enjoyable listening; electronic stuff is always nice.
a good chunk of this isn't super compelling stuff (the intro/closer straight up kill the momentum), but there's a few straight bangers here, and overall when the vibe works i can just leave it on and be happy.
I'd go for "In Sides" over this, personally, so we'd get "The Girl With The Sun In Her Head". The strongest track on here is "Halcyon And On And On"; the rest aren't quite as compelling.
Even more experimental than the last, almost techno/dnb, kinda catchy - some of the sampling is bad
Okay album, though a bit repetitive. Personally I found Snivilisation more of a rounded album. 3/5
This music would be fun to do drugs and dance to at a strobing night club. Unfortunately, I listened to this in the morning at my well-lit desk job. I actually had to split my listening up into two days, because I was super stressed out yesterday, and this album was giving my anxiety.
Dated, trippy, electronic
Ok Album.
Not sure about this one.
Probably better if your yoked out of it
Idk it's okay but it's not bad
Definitely worth listening to and highlights a new type of song construction that comes with greater electronic manipulations. However, there is a strong sense in which this style created a set of tropes which most of the music created falls into. Needs more experimentation.
Some good ideas that get beaten into the ground. Perfectly average.
Didn't like all of it, but it was pretty good when they just stuck to the beats.
old school techno (and trance); great on its own, but i could never get into it as much as i wanted to because of its repetitiveness. that’s one of the main appeals of techno, but it doesnt suit me all too well. despite that, i still like a lot of the tracks here, and i would listen to them again if they are in rotation in my playlist. im not too well versed in the history of edm, but this seems pretty groundbreaking probably at the time at was made. second half took a little dip for me but i can see the vision. 3 personal favs: lush 3-1, impact (the earth is burning)
Good album. This is cool 90s IDM that I found very interesting. It's got a good ambient quality that I enjoyed with techno and house influences. I generally like this older electronic music that is a little lower on the BPM. ***
Time did, indeed, become a loop
Liked it
some are scuffed. some are bangers. no in-between
Mechanical, repetitive, religious. But still bloody brilliant for buzzing off yer tits before you've had breakfast.
I'm not knowledgeable in edm, electronic / dance music. Parts of the album were kinda annoying bit otherwise seemed ok
2.5
Could've been interesting if it isn't too monotonous and if the hooks aren't overlong.
As a house fan, I can appreciate it and recognize the influence in layering and building of tracks. Slowly. Very slowly. Outside of Halycon though, this has low re-listen value. But I appreciate it.
Not really my thing.
Fantastic album if I wanna dance. Slightly less appropriate for sitting in my office. 3 stars, I think it's fine. It's not earth shattering, but it's definitely listenable.
nothing dazzling
A much better approach at drum and bass than the previous one, but still drum and bass. It's just not really my thing
I liked the electronic swells here. Could do without the intro and outro. Favorite songs were Impact and Monday
A decent electronic album, but not for me.
Elektronisk, hypnotiserende, udmærket studiemusik
Well most of its midsection is fine background music, it's going to earn a 3, but I'll tell you it was darned close to dropping to a 2 because of the first and last tracks. So fucking annoying. Why does that happen on albums? Is it supposed to be artsy or something? Like go on, let's do the most irritating noise and see how everyone interprets our art?
Started nice, got annoying in the middle, and then ended strong. Overall the least offensive techno I have ever heard.
Interesting but a little repetitive. May listen again but wouldnt say it is a must do.
Enjoyable electronic album, no particular highlights.
I really tried to concentrate on this album but I always forgot it was playing. It was good for background music while working. Nothing really stood out except "Halycon and On and On" which may be because I've heard it before but i thought it was a step above the rest. Decent to have on when doing something else but I fail to see what is particularly special or groundbraking about it. Maybe it was a new sound at the time?
I had no idea what this was gonna be going into it. This was nice to space out to. Felt like it would just keep on going forever.
Really not my type of music, but it was good to workout to so I'll give it 3 stars.
This album has its moments…. But not really exciting. Standouts: none…. Others worth a listen: Lush 3, Planet of the Shapes, Monday, Haylcon 3.5
I gave their other album on the list, Snivilisation, a 1, but this is an upgrade with a 3. Like I said in my review for Snivilisation, I like Halcyon and On and On, which is on this album, so that’s the biggest factor. I didn’t like the songs that were mostly just spoken word (like the first and last songs) but overall it was alright.
3.3 - I didnt hate this and almost got into a bit of a trance listening. I don't know if this music will ever stay with me like other music, but will always give it a go.
The quietly repeating lyrics drives me a bit batty everytime i hear it and this album indulges three times with Time Becomes, Planet of the Shapes and Input Out. Still, there are some very cool vibe tracks that take you away... Lush 3-1, Lush 3-2 and Remind are really good. Definitely liked how Remind was able to subtlely morph over its 8 minutes but stay engaging.
It's a study in EDM.
Good to study to
hey cool I think this is the first electronic album I've gotten. The intro is very interesting in its looping nature. Only mid song is Lush3-1, mainly because of why I used to hate house music; It's repetitive in a boring way, there's no progression(therefor no climax) and feels generally bland. The continuous nature of the middle few songs was nice. but holy, are these some long songs. I get it, but holy. halcyon has a cool sample flips of the Fine Night Tonight song. that's all I have to say
Good to study to
I enjoyed this album more than I thought I was going to. Pretty unique and was able to keep me entertained throughout. I can imagine being at a rave in the early 90s and really digging this. 7/10 (3.5/5)
They got bored of ecstasy They finished their degrees, with no tuition fees They fell into a career They knocked that club down and now it’s flats They bought houses and rode the property boom They vote for the Conservative Party They listen to Orbital and reminisce about taking ecstasy
is ait. sterrrk 3'er
Vibrating and eclectic sounds, worth knowing more of the band
Weird time loop but interesting at the same time. Decent listen.
Weird but cool and probably influenced a lot of music I listen to. 3/5
Spaced out electronica album. Some really cool melodic techno ish tracks like Lush 3-1, and some super annoying tracks where one word is looped for minutes for example. Not an album I would listen to again from start to end, but I will revisit individual tracks.
I was typing so fast listening to this
Given that it’s not my genre at all, it was pretty good
Sometimes more annoying than innovative but some decent stuff throughout
Enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would. Lush 3-1 is great!
Some solid working music - I enjoyed this especially given how old it is. The opening and closing tracks are garbage even though I guess it serves some purpose.
It is good background music for working except for the first/last tracks.
Meh again.
Tecno. Ni fu ni fa.
was looking forward to this album but found it just average
Some very experimental, or atmospheric stuff in there. But one or two more energetic, techno songs as well. Weird mix of good and not-bad-but-not-interesting.
3+
I will basically never choose to listen to techno, but this was pretty good for the genre (as far as my ignorant ears are concerned). Did I think most tracks were too long? Unequivocally yes. Other than that it was fine as background music, and I found myself enjoying the composition from time to time.
Halcyon and On and On is one of my favorite jams ever.
This wasn't as bad for me as the reviews seemed to suggest. It is repetitive, but laying it on in the background while cooking was cool. + Planet of the Shapes + Impact (The Earth Is Burning) + Halcyon and On and On
It was pretty good, don’t know if I’d revisit it though.
Pretty good in the right circumstances
liked it
Even though some tracks felt like they were just playing on a loop playing on a loop playing on a loop playing on a loop I still had a lot of fun with the great pieces of ear candy throughout. I don't know much about the trance/techno scene, but it's pretty hard to dislike a good beat with lush synths and vocal tones. Not much to say about this one. Would listen again, added a track or two to the 'best of' playlist.
Very hypnotic, it not something I would listen to regularly 3/5

Really enjoyed the nostalgia this provided. Good album overall
If you're a fan of ambient electronic dance, then this probably ticks the boxes for you. I don't mind the genre but I think it's probably best enjoyed in a rave/club/festival type atmosphere, rather than as some stimulating work music.
Decent
Seminal electronic for sure. Fun to listen to, but rather one dimensional compared to other artists of the same time.
Fun but unmemorable
Let's be honest here. The best place to listen to Orbital is in a club/rave/field when you're off your chops. Sorted.
Average, a tough listen in places
Yo this could be sum super monkey ball music! Pretty solid tho, could see it more of an influential album than a real BOP, no fat of the land that’s forsure. Soft 3

• Blissed out and hypnotic. Like I’m in a UK warehouse on acid • Lush 3-1 gets played at a rave happening inside Donkey Kong Country 2 • This album is what old excision is gonna sound like in 30 years • The la la la vocal from Halcyon And On And On is a famous sample. Most recently used in a Skrillex & Boys Noize BANGER called “Fine Day Anthem” • There’s some more important/better electronic albums I’d rather see on this list • If Parker blind-rates this above a 2 then I will give myself $20
This album makes me feel like I am in a grimey night club. I can see how this was innovative for the time and changed the game for trance music. It still mostly holds up. I loved the seamless transitions between songs, and it made it feel like a DJ's set. The intro and outro, however were the definite low points. Best Songs: Impact (The Earth Is Burning, Halcyon and On and On Worst Songs: Time Becomes, Planet of the Shapes, Input Out
3.5
most of this is pretty forgettable 90's electronica except for Halcyon and On and On which holds a special place in my heart for appearing on the Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack (at the end when they're celebrating before Shao Khan shows up) and the forever classic Hackers.
That was definitely 90s electronic music. No doubt in my mind
If I ever need to listen to techno, please let it be the likes of Orbital. This would probably receive an extra star if played in the right place, at the right time.
This was pretty much a less good aphex twin. It had a couple of tracks like halcyon and maybe the lush tracks I’d throw on an ambient playlist but the intro and outros were so insanely stupid and bad I would never really listen to it from start to finish again. In other news, I relistened to power in numbers by Jurassic 5 and while what’s golden is still a banger I’m not sure I’d still give it a 5. I think I’ve listened to enough old school hip hop that’s been better so it didn’t quite hold up on relisten. It’s still a strong 4 overall though
Reminds me of the matrix, or people dancing around a dimly lit floor wearing baggy clothes and spiked hair. I feel like this album may have influenced certain genres based on the quality of songs and when it came out.
early electronic. reminds me a bit of Kraftwerk.
I know this was innovative when it was released. And it makes great background music or chill music or study music. But honestly, I find this whole genre kind of boring.
One of the best electronica albums of all time! It creates a sound world of its own, totally different to anything that Orbital ever released. It is complex, danceable, hypnotic, yet warm and ambient in its sounds.
Idk.
Orbital (also known as Orbital 2 or the Brown Album because it's officially untitled) is the second album by English electronic music duo Orbital. This techno/dance album contains more atmospheric music than rave music - common on their first album. The album has a spacey dance vibe with creative moments that are brought about with simple electronic sounds melded into music. A listener will likely hear new things on repeated listenings. The duo of Orbital were ahead of their time with this techno ensemble. I loved this unique electronic album and think it's a great album from the early golden age of EDM. I felt nostalgia for a time period I was barely alive for and definitely never listened to any music like this back then. I think most people would enjoy this album, even if they never give it another listen.
I enjoyed this one, deserves more exploration
Interesting. Enjoyed the listen. Fairly complex. Def dig the looping and polyrhythms.
ok
Hard to appreciate. Very relaxing to listen to, but didn't really feel anything listening to it. Didn't dislike it, but will probably never listen again.
i liked this more than some of the other electronic music albums on the 1001 list, but it's still not my first pick. i assume the music is much better when played at an illegal 90s rave with a copious amount of party drugs, so the sober experience was middling. i appreciate this album's existence and what it sets out to do, but i wouldn't put it on my top 1001 albums list or anything like that. favorites: halcyon and on and on
Not my usual bag at all. However, as much as it can sometimes fade into musical wallpaper, there's something insistent, verging on the hypnotic, about this album. Quite a minimalist sound palette, but each element is layered up to create interesting textures. Probably won't listen again, but happy to have taken the trip.
I remember this at the time. Good, sensible techno. As always, overlong and repetitive, but really interesting catchy melodies/hooks. Lucky to see some of their set at Glastonbury 1995.
I hate to say it, but it's actually just nothing special. It's layered, yes, but that doesn't mean that all the layers are good. It certainly wasn't the benchmark in Techno or 'the first time people made techno into art' as some people used to claim. That was much earlier, this was the first time it became a bit more known to a wider audience.
I hated the other Orbital album on the list but quite liked this one. It still sounds a bit amater, dated and very cringe in places, but the chilled techno vibe brings back happy memories of nights at the Custard Factory in Birmingham in the mid 2000s. Good times. These days it provides good accompaniment to packing up the car roof box ahead of a family holiday to the Isle of Wight. Even better times. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Planet of the Shapes Date listened: 14/07/23
Good stuff, but a little too in the background for my tastes here. The other album they did was about the same, so it is a shame to not see any real difference.
This is the second Orbital album that I have gotten in a short span of time. The music is ok, nothing I would regularly listen to, but decent enough.
Decent electriconic
Really cool electronic album! It does feel like it’s from the 90’s but in a classic way. Felt like driving late at night.
This was a quirky one. Starts and ends with some bizarre looping vocal pieces, and while I don't feel the need to return to those they were pretty cool and memorable. The middle, the meat of this album, is some solid electro-dance stuff. Music that could play in a '90s club or also score a '90s movie. This was an enjoyable ride. Favorite tracks: Lush 3-1, Monday, Halcyon and On and On. Album art: Can't really tell what I'm looking at here, if anything. Is it an atom? Is that a sketch of some organs? No idea. Having the tracks listed on the cover is kind of cool. As far as color is concerned, there's not much going on here, but it's a good cover. 3.5/5
Reminded me of the mid-90s and the short-lived obsession with techno music.
Good enough but didn’t grab me.
No hits but alright.
This album is an influential techno album that features primarily a four on the floor beat and is made for dancing. As such, you definitely lose something by listening to it in a vacuum. The music itself is pleasant enough and easily fades into the background. I never found the album grating, though the first and final tracks were overindulgent.
really spacey halcyon on and on is actually a really cool track 3.5
Sort of makes one miss the days of doing drugs. And also sort of makes one want to go to the gym, like a high-energy spin class. "Halcyon and On and On" the best bit for being a bit chiller and less urgent than rest of cuts (says one who misses drugs and is feeling a bit too lazy to go to gym anyway) and "Input Out" is def narcotics-required.
I was familiar with "Halcyon and On and On" before this, although I don't remember why. Probably on a compilation album I had back in the day. "Lush 3-2" wasn't bad, and "Remind" sounds so much like late-'90s/early-'00s trance that it must have influenced those later artists. Other than those tracks, the album underwhelmed, but it seems safe to say it was influential, so I'll round up from 2.5.
Buena musica de fondo
This is a neat little experimental electronic album. Some of the sounds they are getting are pretty impressive for 1993. The first track was very reminiscent of "Come Out To Show Them" There is a 9-minute track, but I didn't hate it throughout. I would describe this mostly as a 90's movie hacking/computer wiz scene music. This would definitely be in something like The Matrix Yet another 3/5 Though on principle I should be giving it a 2/5 because it has multiple 9+ minute tracks.
This really feels like the 90s as the New Wave and Electronic developed into EDM. I'd give this a 3.5 if available. Not amazing but a cornerstone of music to come.
Interesting electronic music that is probably better than most of the electronic music the author(s) force upon this list, but is there really room for so much content from a genre that all sounds the same? If that's the case, pull one album to stand and represent and skip the rest - this one could be that representative. 3/5.
I really only get down with the trancy dancy in live, late night environments, so listening to this in bed on an iPad surely won’t have the same effect. But overall I enjoyed it, especially Halcyon and On and On which seems to be their most popular song by far.
Some grown up beats. Seems pretty far ahead of it’s time considering this is from 1993.
It's a 2 star album by Halcyon On and On gets it an extra star.
Dit was behoorlijk goed nog eigenlijk!
A little annoying. Not great techno. Too high pitch!
Second offering from this band encountered through this list and I just don't get it. I was never a techno guy which obviously doesn't help but even adjusting for that this just does not strike me as necessary, let alone essential. Mostly too bland for 2 stars but I would aggressively avoid listening again.
That's the one I know!
There's better Orbital albums for me
Solid, enjoyable techno album. A little repetitive for my taste, but well done. Fave Songs: Halcyon + On + On, Lush 3-1, Remind, Lush 3-2, Impact (The Earth Is Burning), Walk Now...
thoroughly enjoyed this one. chill little electronic alvum
Fun but dated
Interesting album and some really cool music. Often dips into being a little to sonically “Interesting” to be enjoyable and can just feel like a bit of a an assault on the ol ears and brain. I was asked to turn it off as it was stressing out my housemate
This is a genre I like and I think would be brilliant on the dancefloor but in my house there is just too much similarity between tracks for me to gain interest. The drum tracks are especially unimaginative. Its a bit boring as a listening experience.
These are some beeps and boops for sure
I guess everything has a place and this is 90s Techno. I like them but only to a certain point.
Seemed fine, but I really don't know how to judge these albums. They all sound pretty much the same to me.
Correct
Best Song: Halcyon On and On. The use of the female vocals as another instrument works really well here. Worst Song: Time Becomes. I get that it's more of an album intro than a song, but it is such an awful repetition that it makes you not want to see what else the album has to offer. Overall: A halfway decent electronic album that goes in heavy on repetition. This works, mostly, during the instrumental tracks, but I've never heard electronica that handles verbal content so poorly. Anything with someone speaking words is almost unlistenable, and yet Halcyon On and On works very well. Go figure.
It's hard to evaluate a technology-based album accredited with pushing the needle forward without taking a peek at what else was being released at that time. Aphex Twin was the year before, but this precedes Chemical Bros. and Fatboy Slim by a couple of years. I find this sound by comparison to be more of an extension of Kraftwerk. My gripe, as it usually is with electronic dance music is, it's really about the singles, so while Halcyon and Lush are great tracks and entire album is hard to handle in one listen especially the longer tracks with primitive sampling loops.
Unnecessary beats album that provides no value to this list of albums.
This was alright. I actually didn't mind listening to this, despite me not having a good track record with electronica on this website. There's just something about it that sounds a little different to me. The intro was interesting. Some of the songs on here could probably stand to be shorter though. My favourite song was Planet of the Shapes.
For Techno, this is really good. But it's still techno, so no vocals and a rather lifeless sound.
67/100: Most of this album is "Stroke Simulator: The Album." Im incredibly good at multitasking while listening to music. I've never had any issues doing work while listening to music. Oftentimes, I'll even read while listening to music. This album broke me on that front. I had to skip "Input Out" after I accidentally wrote "translation" while doing homework. I think there is something to be said in favor of this being a good album, and maybe even an important one, but I'm not gonna be the one to say it. I feel mentally slower having listened to it.
10/26/22 Not bad
Pretty decent, but some of these tracks go on much longer than they should.
Formative sounds in my musical fandom...I still remember being blow away by a Halcyon & On & On remix that contained a mash up of Bon Jovi and Belinda Carlise...I thought it was the most amazing thing ever. Solid album with a distinctive sound. 3.5/5
energetic electronic music. Certainly doesn't sound it's age.
ALBUM RATING: 3.4 ALBUM GRADE: C+ TRACK RATINGS: 1. Time Becomes - 3.0 2. Planet of the Shapes - 3.5 3. Lush 3-1 - 3.5 4. Lush 3-2 - 3.5 5. Impact (The Earth Is Burning) - 3.5 6. Remind - 4.0 7. Walk Now… - 4.0 8. Monday - 3.5 9. Halcyon + On + On - 2.5 10. Input Out - 3.0
Old school electronic from before I had ever heard electronic music. Less monotonous then current electronic music for sure. My ear needs to hear changes for this type of music to keep me interested, and for the most part, this album supplies that interest, even if it is just one instrument changing, providing a bit of ebb and flow in a sea of sameness.
decent listen. not a fan of the first and last songs.
Started out thinking that techno doesn't really translate to the recorded album format but by halfway I was quite into it. In the battle of albums on this list released in 1993 by English electronic artists with 'Orbit' in their name, this wins hands down for me. Sorry, William.
This is very early dance music. A good example of the origins of dance music - BUT, the songs themselves are pretty basic, very repetitive. And the first track and last track, Time Becomes and Input Out are gimmicky audio sync experiments that you'd never listed to more than once. It's OK - but dance music progressed and became way more sophisticated after this.
3.7 - It starts with a vocal loop, "where time becomes a loop", that's a little on-the-nose but still pretty trippy. From there, I'm expecting a whacked out space record, à la "Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream or something by Arca. Instead, it's an almost scientifically well-composed EDM record with some spacey elements that still feels balanced and grounded. Standout: "Halcyon and On and On"
Still not as good as In Sides.
Good background music.
Interessant
Electronic music is generally not my thing, but this is pretty solid. It's not holding my attention but it doesn't feel like it's supposed to. Each track kind of ebbs and flows one after another in a pleasing way. I dig it.
lush 3-1 and 3-2 hit, surprising
Quality production but not my jam
125. Þetta er danstónlist og eðli málsins samkvæmt full endurtekningarsöm fyrir minn smekk, og á köflum satt best að segja aðeins of intense.
I enjoyed the random vocal loop experiments, the rest of the stuff is okay, not my style of electronica that I would listen to in a non-club setting, but I liked this album more than their first.
Starts off well, but just becomes one-paced and boring.
Ok I guess
me brains been thoroughly washed
I enjoyed it quite a bit. Some of the songs really pushed my patience, but not because I wasn’t enjoying the beat, but just that it was quite repetitive. Wish I had some drugs for this one, though. 6/10
A little more just ambiance than I would normally want
The opening is a bit rough, song one and the first minute of song two are just spoken bits with a computerized voice. The voice is just repeating a phrase over and over again too, so there's nothing there but hearing a line. This happens again later in the album too. When the music is actually playing, it's very good ambient electronic and I liked having it on while I worked. Song 1, and the very end of Song 2 are jarring and take away from the quality of the album. Lush 3-1,Lush 3-2, and Monday are highlights. I'm on the fence on rating this one. How they decided to have the opening and closing tracks be this annoying, lazy, no-effort put a sentence on a loop thing boggles my mind. Everything in the middle is pretty solid, and you have some great music in there but the album has decided to piss you off at the start and risk you turning it off before getting to the music, or you actually listen to it and then it pisses you off at the end and kills the vibe you just built. I'll rate it 3, I really enjoyed the actual music on this album, they're lucky I'm not in a bad mood or this would be a 1 or 2 just for having those asinine first and last tracks.
Halycon + On + On + On +On
Solid
Took me back briefly, and not as hardcore as I remember. Strangely started to find it good for zoning out and relaxing.
Make sure your suits are buttoned up tight and your oxygen tanks are full- and you better bring some extra canisters- because you’re invited to dance amongst the stars with two of Techno’s finest space ambient artists: the English duo Orbital. I love me some Ambient music, man. And while mine leans more toward the likes of the non-tempo sort (Steve Reich, ie) I still enjoyed this LP very much, beats and all. And that’s really where 'Orbital 2' is coming from, it’s all about the beats. Seems to be a bit of a concept album, too, bookending the space rave with words on loop (‘Time becomes’), but subtly morphing into a slightly different phrase (the opening number ended with the words, ‘For time becomes a loop.’) The technique itself, in which two identical samples are repeated at slightly different speeds, was coincidentally popularized by Steve Reich. Thus, the entire LP seems to be a very creative artistic representation of ‘the theory of the Mobius, a twist in the fabric of space where time becomes a loop.’ And that’s what you get, in spades/space, on 'Orbital 2': lots of synthesized beats, excellent syncopation (‘Lush 3-1,’ ie), good use of dynamics (wish there had been just a bit more, but I’m just being picky), some great drone instruments like sitar and didgeridoo, echoed vocals, and all looped into one dynamite techno package. Orbital indeed. I’ll certainly loop back around to this one again.
Tecno. Ni fu ni fa.
Genre: Techno 3/5 A truly inoffensive Techno album from the 90s. Orbital, a couple of Brits, go ahead and produce some of the most boring, yet beautiful, electronic music I’ve heard in a while. A rather heavy emphasis on the ambient side of things more so than the heavy big beat sound which was becoming popularized at that time. Lush 3-1 is good and there are a few other minor highlights, but none too interesting, and everything is all very cohesive, but the overall vibe doesn’t reach beyond a mild head bob. Maybe for a slow workout, or if you need a chill, accessible Techno album while you work, but this was much more “easy listening” than I had anticipated.
first listen well loved in terms of techno but i find it boring personally
Can’t tell if I enjoyed it or hated it
Big beats are the best. It was fine if you like this kinda thing
1/27/22
Some of this album was quite enjoyable, after a while however it became quite repetitive and it lost me. Like the production of it and the fact that it stuck firmly to its genre, not an album I would listen to again.
Definitely a 90's Electronica album. I enjoyed the atmosphere it built, but found that the songs usually blended together into white noise after a bit.
Not heard this album before - very familiar with the later stuff. Will definitely be listening again.
Cool beats with a variety of sounds from industrial to ethereal to electronic. Interesting intro/extro samples. In/out drive me nuts but made me think. Planet of the shapes, Lush, Monday, halcyon and on and on
Good album for getting in the zone, maybe for a gym workout. If this was playing in a club, I'd probably leave, though.
The best of this album IMO: - Impact (The Earth Is Burning) - Monday - Halcyon + On + On Not bad. 3.2/5
If you thought the song Donda was a mind breaker, just wait. Nice listening.
There are signs of the genius of Orbital on this early '90s album, but the sound feels rather outdated and the melodies are too repetitive to really enjoy this. The looping trickery on the opening and closing tracks was interesting, though.
I was going to give this a 1, but so many reviews say that these sounds were so new and amazing at the time of its release - something I didn't think about.
Lush 3-1 is a good track. Its a cool sonic atmosphere but i just cant find it in me to put a house album above a 3
Listening to this felt like a chore. I can absolutely see how groundbreaking and influential this album was. Its influence over electronic music in the 90s is clear. But this feels like the music in a concentrated form, like runway fashion vs what ends up in department stores. I guess it's not a genre that I have ever been into and what is left just reminds me of the electronic pop that came in the later 90s - and I'm not ready to be reminded of that yet. So yeah, the album deserves its place on the list but it's not something I would otherwise enjoy listening to.
