Reviews (page 7 of 7)

I got so tired of this so fast. Sorry, not interested in this probably because it was played to death on radio, tv, movies and pop culture in general forever

Never had listened to this album. Not my cup of tea mostly, but better than some other albums on this list I have had to give 1 stars to since I can't give zero stars.

This was like spending an hour listening to a group of teens, annoying and immature. The cover of Emotion is fine, and is the only redeeming moment on this album. Not good.

Fuckkk off

One of the most overrated albums of all time. Anodyne, over produced, commercially cynical, not a single song on this LP even compares to the likes of the Supremes. It would be harmless pap, but the cynicism just bleeds through so much.

I really disliked the caterwauling vocals.

Trying to have an open mind for every album but this really isn't for me. I don't normally care too much about lyrics but they are really bad on this record. I'm not sure how it made this list, maybe within it's genre it is deemed essential but I won't be returning to it or any of the songs.

Independent Women Part 1 Survivor Bootylicious

Why is this album even on here?? Enought said.

I thought that the first part wasn't great, because it felt like listening to some generic radio station with popular music, which was actually okay compared to what came next. The ballads. Atrocious.

Each individual song is SO REPETITIVE. It really takes away from the good parts. ‘I’m not gon’ compromise my Christianity’ may be the most hilarious pop lyric ever. Elsewhere the lyrics are downright disgusting. How, with no irony, are there feminist songs alongside posturing and slut shaming? All this only four songs in! How utterly vile this is, in a uniquely American sense. First album that’s straight up /offensive/.

A low point in my life!

So steril und überproduziert wie die "Musik" sind die Darstellerinnen. Nichts menschliches ist zu hören und zu sehen. Irgendwie unwirklich.

Now I love both female vocals and R&B, that being said this album does not satisfy me. Beyonce is vastly overrated and this music is the worst kind of canned pop music I have heard on this list thus far. This isn't a musical statement, it is a product mass-produced for teenagers to be sold for a profit. The songs here do not elicit any emotional response and are generally irritating. Can these ladies sing? Yes, they can sing, but for me, this is soulless-soul music. The best song on the album is the cover of the BeeGees' "Emotion", and even that falls flat.

Not my kind of music. 1/5

i’m not doing this.

I hate early 2000s pop so much

Booring

Overly commercialized, name dropping, 2000's cheese. I don't even know why this makes the list. There's no cohesion or idea behind it, it's terribly written, and it's contradictory from one song to the next. Are you bootylicious or independent? The song "Emotion" completely lacks just that. I remember it when it came out and I still don't like it. Low 1.0.

This must be on the list purely for the popularity at the time and the release of "Charlie's Angels" theatrical reboot. Only the 1st 3 tracks are decent and recognizable from radio play. The rest is lame R&B (Regrettable&Boring) complete with stereotypical slow song featuring star sprinkles and preachy prayer finisher. Everything about the group is overrated including the solo projects by members. Can't wait to get out of this list slump...1.3.

1.5 not good

Has a clutch of famous songs at the start that range from good to naff but still kind of good that I’ve heard on the radio a million times anyway. After that the quality tanks faster than Tank Girl leading a charge of tanks off a cliff. Just empty, soulless R & B dreck and cynical, lazy filler.

Here's a number from country Star snub Beyonce and those other two singers. I think one of them was caught trying to text Nelly using Microsoft Excel and was sad and disappointed tgat he didn't return her text. And the other? Well, her name is Michelle. I only know this because they talk to each other through thus re Ltd a d they always have to name drop one another. This is album is huge.. In the sense that there is a shit ton of fat that needs trimming... The fact that they started their album with a song from a soundtrack really starts this album off bad and it sets the precedent. What is this album even about? Why is this on this list? There's arguably 3, maybe 4 hits in this record and the rest is forgettable. And there are 3 members in this trio, and two of them are forgettable. Why is this on here? Was the 2000s that shitty for music? I'd say yes... At least for mainstream music. In Nasty Girl Beyonce, steals the "Woah Woah oh oh Woah oh" part from Tarzan Boy and it's absolutely awful. Beyonce is a good singer... Maybe more so now than prior. But some little things that she does in the 2000s is just cringey. Perhaps it was the time? Those vocal runs that her and other female artists from this pop era do (Christina Aguilera comes to mind) is the most painful thing to listen to. Come to think of it, this album sounds like the three of them are in competition to see who has the better "woahhohhhhohhhwoahhhh" - it's very Iver used and very annoying. Spoiler alert: they all lose. What is this album? "I'm independent. I don't need love. Wait! I love you. You are my everything. Wait I don't need you. I have my girls.. But I know you love me. You show it. Also, I'm strong and I'm courageous... But I'm also timid and shy when I see you in the grocery store. But remember I'm independent! I'm a survivor! But praise Jesus and blindly follow him" This album is bad. Aside from the hits.... If you wanna call them that. I personally don't see how they hold that status.. All poorly written songs. And for relatively talented singers, it's hardly shown. Unless you love those vocal runs that go..up and down and up and down. God forbid you sustain a note. Someone should've abort Destiny's Child.

Auto-tune? Check. All songs sound exactly like each other? Check. This album has no place on a list like this? Checkmate.

I love looking at an album's wikipedia entry, specifically the personnel section - I enjoy knowing who the players are, who might have snuck in a solo here or a drum part there .... bitch the list for this album is no fewer than 74 GODDAMN NAMES LONG. SEVENTY FOUR. How can anything with 74 people contributing to a pop album be anything other than manufactured pablum. I'm not usually one to call something commercial tripe but this is lowest common denominator pandering - the express purpose of this record was to sound so fake, so false, so sterile and compressed with zero dynamics, so *constructed* - there's no soul or honesty to this at all. hate it. 2/10 1 star

This album should have been left on the cutting room floor. No amount of vocal gymnastics can disguise weak songwriting. Couple that with a totally mixed message about femininity by including a song about girl power (Independent woman) and 'slut'-shaming lyrics (Nasty girl). A terrible album and really not worth over an hour of life.

I'm not into it. I think it's for kids.

Middle school nostalgia vibes. I can see why the first three songs are the only ones that they put on the NOW! albums.

Just terrible music.

First album I tapped out and didn't finish. I don't think it's aged very well.

Not for me 1/5

Drivel

Sounds like generic 2000s music. Might have been a good album in that time but, now it doesn't sound good.

It gave me a headache.

Pretty typical 2000's pop. Nothing wrong with that. But pretending it's good because of its cultural relevance is a disservice. It's not good. But is culturally relevant.

Can't stand this shit. Just not for me....I wish I had my 71 mins back. 1/5

I don't think this is really horrible or anything, and i do recognize the cultural significance of destiny's child, especially in hind sight as the jumping off point for Beyoncé, but this whole thing just feels extremely cynical and barely even like an album. in terms of content and themes, there's absolutely no cohesion or consistency here-- to jump from Bootylicious right into Nasty Girl is some crazy whiplash, and then when you sprinkle in all the god stuff it doesn't feel like an album at all but just a mish mash of songs scientifically designed to hit as many segments of the population as possible. there's no overarching ideas and you really don't get the impression this is intended to be listened to as an actual album at all, you're just supposed to pick out your favorites and ditch the rest. again, not awful, but it gets a 1 for the cynicism of it and for barely even qualifying as an album

This is torture

turned it off when a song called ‘bootylicious’ started playing

I'll Pass

Nah this aint it.

I don't want to call this trash, but it's definitely a timepiece from the 2000s. Hasn't aged well either.

Why is this album on here?

It’s not to my taste

Cheap hip-hop-pop polished to the point that it doesn't have any personality at all. The three women are pretty good singers - but the songwriting is so weak that it just doesn't even matter how well the songs are sung. The only spark of good songwriting on this album was the Stevie Nicks sample.

I had this CD as a kid... let's see if it's still holding up after all these years. It does not. 1/5

Not as great as I was expecting

Eh. Not for me. 00s overproduced pop/R&B had its time and place for some people. But I don't feel like I'm missing anything in life by skipping over this one.

Lol, what's this doing here? Ok it's the biggest pop song of the year for sure, there's already a Bouncy solo album in the book and it isn't Lemonade (which I still haven't got around to) so she's covered. Always found destiny's child confusing, songs about independent women and loving your body, songs slagging off women for the same reasons, songs saying if you're gonna be my man then you gotta pay all my bills. Independent, woo! I've already heard the culturally significant songs (song?) on this record 6 billion times, and so has everyone else in the planet. Obviously clocked the Eye of the Tiger sample in Bootylicious but hadn't clicked the connection with album also being called Survivor, so that's fun. 20 years ago I had absolutely no idea what they were on about jelly for either. I see, jelly is your arse! Why are you spoiling jelly for me? Nasty Girl, um, yeah. The messaging is all over the place here. If she puts her clothes on how on earth are we going to get put off our jelly and ice cream? And I thought you guys called it jello. Jelly is what you call jam. The arse comparison makes even less sense now. Jam doesn't wobble. Haha what the hell is Jungle Nights doing in there at the end! What a mess. Nah, there's nothing else here I needed to hear. The same sort of songs over and over for an hour. Brown Eyes the absolute nadir. Ultimately I prefer stuff like Aaliyah's hits to this as while they've had healthy exposure they haven't been played into oblivion like this has.

I've gotta say, it's got some serious vocal prowess. The harmonies are tight, and the production is good. That said, it didn't quite captivate me like I hoped. The back and forth of female empowerment and slut shaming is wild! Overall its fine for background vibes, but it didn't have that wow factor. Still, there are some gems in there.

No thank you

Such a stupid style of music.

Apart from a couple of commercial pieces of bubblegum pop, this album is blah, blah, blah…

Three wedding disco belters (if that's your kinda thing)...then ...warble, warble, warbly-warbly-warble Not for me

J'ai trouvé ça pas pire au début, mais avant la fin de l'album, leurs voix me tombaient sur les nerfs.

beyonce more like Loncye

My father once commented on Destiny's Child around the time this album came out, which was a rare occurrence, as he normally wouldn't show any interest in pop music. He said that he found their cheeks unsettling as they were just so big. He went as far as suggesting that it made him feel a bit hungry, as the three singers reminded him a little of hogs fattened up for slaughter. Anyway, this album was awful. I think the lowest point was "Sexy Daddy", fart noises from a Casio keyboard and a caterwauling vocal performance that was literally torture to listen to. Definitely a 1 star experience from start to finish. If this music made my father consider cannibalism, then I think he would have agreed with this assessment.

I knew the hits from this album, but never listened to the whole thing. This definitely doesn't warrant being on the list. The first song (or two) and "Emotion" - people should hear those so that they at least know who Destiny's Child was. Outside of that, this album is mostly drivel. Weird melodies and no real lyrical substance. Listening to the whole thing did make it clear why it's Destiny's Child and not Destiny's Children. Michelle and Kelly were barely noticeable.

This album is boring and it stinks.

Just not my thing at all.

This is just bad, first song and i immediately turned it off. I saw Jordan’s review and I had to save myself from hearing anymore than the first

This was horrendous. Aside from the very first song in the album, every song was basically unlistenable for me. I would love to give credit to this one song, but honestly the beat kinda carried. When I listen to this 1 semi-okay acceptable song, I find myself wishing these 3 women were the background singers and somebody else gave the beat the delivery it deserved. All around, not good. Get this shit out of 1001 albums. Did not need to hear this Personal Favorites: Independent Woman Pt.1

Pop is not classic

This is incredibly bland and annoying, even in 2000's R&B pop standards.

Never-ending. Who thought a double album for a singles-oriented girl group was a good idea?

Just not my shit.

Nah. Survivor is a decent pop song, but that doesn't earn any credit in my book.

If this is the kind of music you like, then I guess this album ticks all the right boxes - it's good pop music. But it's not my thing and I abhor the treated vocals.

WOT THE FUC

Utter, utter, utter shite. Comfortably the worst album we've had so far. First time I've had to skip through some songs on an album. Rather listen to MJ Cole on repeat than have to listen to this again

Not my thing at all and the album overstayed it's welcome with the last two songs.

I've never listened to Beyonce or Destiny's Child before, but with sales of over 10M, it's worth a shot right? Wrong - I couldn't make it past the third song. Next please.

Kelala sai kaksi... 2000s pop R&B albumiksi ihan hyvä... Tämä ei voi mitenkään yltää samalla tasolle.. eikä yllä... Harmittaa ykköstä laittaa mutta on kyllä vaan niin mid albumi..

Nostalgisk, på ein dårlig måte

First time listening to a Destiny Child album all the way through. After listening to it I hope it's the last time I do.

Not my genre. Can't enjoy this.

Just stop

Oh fuck off. You are having a laugh, right?

Sorry, not a fan

Best part is the guitar homage to Eye of the Tiger on Bootylicious. Other than that just wracked my brain to determine which auto-tuned keyboard song hurt my ears most. Brown Eyes was the one I finally landed on. That song seems like the soundtrack I would need if I took up full time inspiration porn on my Pinterest board. Happy Face was a very close second. I struggled to dislike one more than the other. The spoken word xian gospel lyrics were just salt in the wound.

Even as I come over to country a tiny bit, I think pop r&b will remain a genre I just have zero interest in unfortunately. This just does nothing for me.
