Bop after bop.
All feels a bit formulaic and odd now one of them is treated like a deity - the music here was fun, but isn't fun anymore unless you happen to be smashed off your tits in a shit club

Par contre, comme beaucoup d'albums RnB, il y a toujours le moment après la moitié de l'album qui est quasiment juste des trucs plus doux jusqu'à temps qu'on retrouve quelques bangers pour finir. Généralement un très bon album, je comprends l'importance du groupe sur la scène RnB. Même si ce n'est pas tellement mon genre, ça mérite amplement sa place ici. 7/10

A good message through much of the album about being strong and independent women. And some good hits. Well produced and they all have good voices, but not something I’d go back to.
Seemed to have all the singles I knew up front. While the singles are fine and have some nostalgic value for me. This is a long repetitive record (that feels a little preachy).
This is really not my genre. I just don't like it, at all. I thought, maybe, this one would be the album that changed my mind a little bit. It starts off strong, the first 3 or 4 songs are all really good. Then it goes on for another hour of just repeating the same things over and over. And several songs talking about how much they love each other, which gets real annoying, real fast. I can't see ever playing this one again, even if the first few songs were okay.
Yeah... The late 90s and early 00s were a dark time for pop music. This had a couple okayish songs. I think the 2 is generous. No reason to listen to the whole thing again.
After the well know hits at the start of the album is progressively gets worse, couldn't finish it

I hate hate hated this in 2001. Thought it was another clone of all the crap R and B doing the rounds. 20-odd years later this sounded like nostalgia and competent singing. Hearing Beyonce before she was bigger than God was quite interesting.

I love the first two songs; the remainder is just too flat and long.
It's interesting listening to this album many years after it was first made, musically it highlights where The whole girl power movement was heading. It's quite a good album, enjoyable listenable but maybe not one that you would go back to time and time again

Survivor is certainly a classic, after a while these are all the same song to me but it keeps the mood up through a snowy work morning
I think this is the best iteration of Beyonce but I'm really just not a Beyonce fan in any capacity whatsoever.
A couple of fun / nostalgic singles on here, but as an album this sort of sucks. It feels assembled rather than any type of genuine artistic expression. Listening to it is like eating a Happy Meal. I guess it's fine, but I can feel chemicals coursing through my blood with every new bit of ingestion.
Had some decent songs that were hits when it first released, but I wasn't a fan of the style overall. Seemed kind of "gospel" at times and a lot of songs sounded kind of similar. I could see how someone liked that type of genre would appreciate it though. 3/5

This was horrendous. Aside from the very first song in the album, every song was basically unlistenable for me. I would love to give credit to this one song, but honestly the beat kinda carried. When I listen to this 1 semi-okay acceptable song, I find myself wishing these 3 women were the background singers and somebody else gave the beat the delivery it deserved. All around, not good. It personifies the struggles of an early 2000s black woman - being independent but still looking for a daddy while still hating on his other woman. I was debating 3 or 4 but then the dangerously in love put it over the edge and the shade of the last song to the two former members of Destinys Child is amazing and makes me laugh.

Ok, it's nice to have this album on the list for historical reasons; it's still the birthplace of huge stars from the last decades. However, despite "survivor", It's a good album only if you are really into 2000s R&B.
Frontloaded with three great songs, then into a huge pile of bloat ended with a song about sexual abuse, a sung prayer to god and the three singers telling each other how great they are, outstandingly uneven album.

Ну, леди Destiny's Child, посыл прекрасный, только это не совсем так работает! Что по самой музыке -- это прям такой лёгкий рнб поп нулевых, можно было б в ряд с pussycat dolls поставить. Окей, трек в честь которого назван альбом -- Survivor -- я знаю. "This song is a shout out to people who left toxic relationships, bullied, came out of depression, survived any form of cancer, harmful addictions" -- дэм сан, только потому что в припеве они говорят "я выживу я двинусь дальше я приложу усилия"? Я о чём. Я о том, что лирика КРАЙНЕ простая. Она долбит в лоб. Мотивы крайне простые. Голоса крайне простые. И вот эта самая survivor которая "девоньки (а может и не только девоньки) не сдавайтес" идёт ровно перед bootylicious. То есть треки такие: "я добьюсь всего сама", "я смогу я превозмогу", "у меня большая попа". Это типа... такой плотный однородный список? Оно одно равно другому, что на одном альбоме один исполнитель их рядом поёт? Ну вот я к посылу и лирике докопался. Но при этом стоит сказать что альбом-то слушабельный. То есть они приятно накидывают своей попсовой сескуальности дешёвой. Но альбом ощущается непомерно длинным, и это плохой знак. Я почитал википедию. Наверное, нужно это делать до того как слушать албом. Понятно теперь, почему оно кажется таким.. .знакомым и вторичным. Лид сингер это Бейонсе. Нуу в таком случае всё вышенаписанное понятно и закономерно. В общем, ощущение что это альбом для "нормальных" девочек-подростков. Да, вам тяжело, но надо потерпеть и вы сможете. Надо стремиться, надо жить и выживать, надо быть благодарными за то что есть. Любите жизнь (и свою попу). Вот только любая девочка лет шестнадцати, которая это слушала на серьёзных щщах -- это самая бейсик бич которую вы видели. Не знаю, что-то такая агрессия. Альбом-то неплохой! Типа его можно слушать. Но при этом втф, меня чёт калит. Не знаю, два или один. Надо подумать Ладно, два. Типа не так это отвратительно чтоб единицу влепить. Чтоб единица была -- я вообще должен захотеть жесточайше вырубить альбом. Два.
Great singles plus filler
3.5 Obviously some amazing songs, but the album did feel like they were songs written specifically for Beyoncé with no consideration of Kelly or Michelle’s strengths. And maybe it’s a symptom of the early 2000s, but most of the songs just felt like very long choruses extended over 3-4 minutes. While I appreciated the moments of empowerment, I was shocked to hear the “cover it up ladies, you look like sluts,” (paraphrasing, here) but I assume this is another symptom of early 2000s music. The album also felt very long and I’m just not the biggest fan of early 2000s pop and RnB that maybe it was never for me to appreciate. But I liked hearing clearly early influences of Beyoncé’s later solo albums, and the similarities across two decades. I probably won’t pick up this album again, but will (happily) listen to a few select songs.

This isn't as bad as I expected, but I had very very low expectations. Its catchy at points and seems to be produced fine. Its made me feel like a strong powerful bootlicious woman who don't need no man, but regardless its a 3

Strong first half of the album, the soulful ballads in the second half kind of dragged on and didn't innovate very much (each sounded pretty repetitive). Funny to hear about 20-year-old Beyonce's beef with the previous members of Destiny's Child, resulting in this album.
General culture
It starts with familiar songs that everyone's heard before and that's not a bad thing. The rest though is just album filler. Really comes from an era where excellent singles were released to promote and sell dull albums.
Pop is not classic
The singles are pretty memorable, so I had high hopes for this - but sadly it's like so much pop music where the album is largely filler. Destiny's Child definitely belong on a list of 1001 singles, but putting them here is an odd decision. 2*

3 absolute bangers out the gate on this album. Side note, what happened to “Bootylicious” and why doesn’t that song get any love any more? But overall, I find this album to be very much a nostalgic time capsule of early 2000s pop. Ciara had a beautiful memory of this album and feeling like it helped her learn at an early age she can be an “Independent Woman Pt. 1” which was very sweet and meaningful. However, the album does get a little weird and churchy at the end, which knocks it down a peg for me.
Great pop album.
This is like a 2 for me. Really not a fan of any particular song, unlikely to listen to any again. However, Ani and I got a kick out of how many songs were like "man I fucking hate other women" and then the album ends with like spoken word thanking all the women who they feel close with. Hilarious energy would give it 2.5 if I could just for that.

This modern era of pop/soul... A characteristic feature is a long list of "personnel" with barely any recognizable instrument credits but a whole lot of things like "production" and "programming". I see the appeal and there is some real artistry to be found here, but it's not really my thing.
Such an iconic female empowerment album. I have never listened to it front to back and honestly, I was underwhelmed. The first three songs were iconic for me growing up, but the rest of the album was very skippable for me. However, the amazing vocals and the nostalgia of the first few songs have me rating the album a little bit higher than a 1. 2/5
"Is my vibe too vibealacious for you, babe" Fuck this album, even the popular songs (all three were back to back at the very beginning) weren't very good. Afterwards, I felt like I was being tortured during a Crimean underground waterboarding. I would've given them the nuclear launch codes. The album was 1hr and 10min, which is 20 minutes longer than the average album, which was just fantastic. Not only was the music headache-inducing, it was also contradictory, with the girls bragging about being so "Bootylicious" and then going on to bash other women for being sluts in the very next song- "Nasty girl." this shit sucks. T6 - Apple pie a la mode is going on the playlist solely because it's the shortest song on the album. 1/5

Jesus I had no idea about Destiny's Child, and this was a revelation. I feel like a lot of the time I find myself getting ready to be sorta bored by R&B when it comes up, but this was refreshingly energetic
I didn't expect to like this, and while I didn't dislike it, I haven't changed my mind.
Excellent pop music. I really enjoyed this, although I am probably not the target audience. Great production, great arrangements and the voices work so well together. It did meander a bit after a while, and then it started to drag during the soppy bits: an hour plus is too long for a pop album - or pretty much any album, but this did have its moment, especially the front-loaded singles.

I really love this kind of production that sounds like Darkchild (even if it is not produced by him) and just RnB in general with great vocals and runs like this, but some songs are so corny and void of personnality, like Nasty Girl, Sexy Daddy and Emotion. Shoutout to Apple Pie à la Mode and Fancy for being great underrated hidden gems

Good
A good 2000s R&B album. The life before Beyoncé was destiny’s child. This was a classic on the radio when it came out. Now you hear survivor or some other song on this album for some woman empowerment segment in tv or movies. The first few songs started strong but it lost some momentum halfway through. 6.4/10
This album opens with a bang, Destiny's Child's string of hits from the resolute Independent Women and Survivor to the party-tastic lexicon-expanding Bootylicious. Destiny's Child were a key pillar of late 90s/early 00s music and whilst not in any of my go-to genres, this was an enjoyable listen.
5/10. I think I'd have liked this album more if it was a bit shorter. Definitely had some strong songs, though.

Heard before: some Love the harmonies, lyrics, and Timbaland-era production. On the right track, it's a nice balance, makes for some great pop/R&B singles. Reaching beyond that, on some of the ballads especially, it's a little dull. And this should be Example A of 2000's CD track bloat; it would be so much better as a tight 9-10 tracks. Top tracks: Bootylicious, Independent Woman, Perfect Man
I’m not going to dispute this albums place on the greatest list. I was there, this thing was huge. All the videos were on all the time. This is the lasting legacy from the Charlie’s Angels movie. 3 incredible bangers right off the top that no one is going to miss off biggest songs of the 2000s. Who among us can claim that? No one. I was ready to hand out a 5 on this one but after Bootylicious the rest of the record is so aggressively mid it’s wild. Also weirdly the next song is Nasty Girl which is hating on other women not wearing a lot of clothes. Such a bizarre heel turn.
Nah. Survivor is a decent pop song, but that doesn't earn any credit in my book.

Well, I guess this is how we’re going to cap off this week of absolutely torturous records from the 1001 Albums Generator… A few years ago, in a belated review of Sonic Youth’s “Washing Machine”, Pitchfork compared Sonic Youth and Destiny’s Child - I guess in an attempt make Sonic Youth more relatable to their modern-day audience. Ironic that a website that wouldn’t have even thought about reviewing this Destiny’s Child record in 2001 and gave Sonic Youth’s 2002 record, Murray Street, a 9.0/10 upon release would end up making such a comparison, but we live in strange times. I’m sure Pitchfork’s corporate overlords at Condé Nast don’t mind a few more mentions of Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child than usual - it fits a bit better with the upper class hipster fashionista lifestyle they try and sell than Sonic Youth’s grimey noise rock does. Without further ado, I present to you the comparison they made, verbatim: “Skip Tracer” is a showcase for Lee Ranaldo, the band’s second guitarist, who is given a spotlight or two as lead singer on most Sonic Youth albums. He’s something like the Kelly Rowland to Moore’s Beyoncé, beloved but in the background due to the band leader’s overwhelming star power.” Until I sat down to listen to “Survivor” today, I never understood how apt that comparison was. …Just kidding, that comparison is ridiculous and doesn’t serve either party very well. Anyway, at this point, the generator has beaten me down enough this week and I’ve stopped listening to “Survivor” about 7 songs in to put on Murray Street - it’s a really great record, one of Sonic Youth’s best.
Question … How is it possible this album is more than 20 years old?
Pop perfection. Intricate rhythms. Enough variation in chord progressions and melodies. Too many ad libs for my taste, but I can live with it. Favorite song: fancy.
I thought I was going to give this 5 stars after the first three songs (their hits) but after that it got pretty generic, boring, and repetitive. Lots of great moments but nothing that sustains an entire song. 3.5 stars and that was heavily weighted by the first 3 songs, although the cover of "Emotion" was pretty cool too.

Bom demais
Meltiness is an outstanding feature of this Destiny's Child lineup, hits obscuring whether or not it works as a genre virtue. The tracklist's approach to mutability re: religion, sex, and power is unique in direction at least. The end isn't a salvific moment; It leaves us richer if not changed in quality. And that's a decent summation of ends vs. middle, musically, to boot.
Talent, theres no denying it, but long, repetitive and very simple lyrics. Each song could have been trimmed about 30 to 45 seconds of repeat chorus.
Great two opening tracks, so many memories, every club would play those songs over and over again. Very sentimental stuff. But then, listening to the rest of album, it's basically Beyonce version 1.0. If you remove the aforementioned two songs from this album, it sounds like a very early Beyonce record. To add to that, most of the beats and melodies don't hold up that well, it really sounds very generic. Mixed feelings about this one, great, sentimental tracks, plus a lot of disappointment. I'll give it a 3/5, but I feel like it might be a bit too high of a note.
It was a solid 3* pop album, with good uptempo songs and some lesser ballads. That's until the Gospel Medley and the outtro. That's when it crumbled down.
Who are these women to shame so-called "nasty girls" who like to go out without many clothes on? Freedom of expression, that's what I always say! If you're a beautiful young woman and prefer to wear little (or no) clothing in public, more power to you! I'm glad the personnel section of the Wikipedia page for this album credits the people responsible for hair, makeup, and styling; that's really important to me when I listen to music. Also always interesting to me when there are like 100 or more people listed in the personnel - real team effort I guess. Social commentary and sarcasm aside, I didn't enjoy this at all. If it was 50 minutes shorter I might have been okay with it. 2 stars.
3.5/5 The first few songs are amazing, (and I knew them), but then it slowly devolved into 5 minutes of vamping and soloing. There was very little breaks in the music to let your mind rest from words and ears rest from singing. It felt like what the kids say nowadays, "They were doing too much."
This started out super strongly but then rapidly declined. Can't knock the vocal prowess and group harmonies but the songs were too God bother-y for me.

"Survivor" by far the biggest hit on the album. Overall I thought it was nice; quintessential early 2000s pop and sounds a bit dated/didn't stand the test of time but that's the case for alot of pop music. Starts off strong but peters off as the album progresses, which also is too long IMHO (and I noticed at least one cover in "Emotion". Outstanding vocals all around though. 6/10.

The first three tracks on this are as good as the first three tracks on any album in this book, but it absolutely careers off a cliff after that. albeit a little long, this album makes me feel like a bad bitch
3/5. A solid collection of pop songs but there seems to be a general uneasiness and a lack of confidence in the songwriting and vocals. There is potential here but some amateur singing as well that makes the record fall flat.
Look, I'll be the first to admit that there's probably a need for more power girl anthems in the world. And "Survivor" definitely does its part to put 'em out there. But every track is pretty much the same: a semi-aggressive, anthemic beat with wailing vocals over top. There's very little variation and almost zero instrumentation. It's an album built by producers, not musicians. The liner notes back that up with dozens of people credited as producers, mixers, programmers, and songwriters but only a handful of actual musicians. You would think that, with so many peoples' hands on it, the album would be varied and interesting but it's not. Not even a little. The whole project is incredibly synthetic. It's nothing but cookie-cutter songs and assembly-line production. That's not to say it doesn't have it's bangers. "Survivor" comes off the bench swinging with tracks like "Bootylicious" and the eponymous "Survivor" but it quickly looses its sparkle by track 5 or so where it becomes clear that Destiny's Child is a one-trick pony.
not my cup of tea. I know it was worked on my 150 people or whatever, but it's lyrically kind of a confusing record, and I found a lot of the improvised vocal lines to be a bit 'first-take-y' - unsure and wandering away from 'in tune' like they rushed this record. Actually the Wikipedia article also indicates it was rushed. The ‘group’ vocal parts sound great - almost too great like sometimes autotuned…? (Not the end of the world but maybe a bit surprising) I guess I just feel like when the entire non-vocal part of your song is a sampled and/or mindlessly repeating bass-line and fake record scratching sounds…. The vocals had better be killer. There is a lot of good vocal performance on here but I think it never rises above merely 'good'. Track 09 Happy Face was a bit of a surprise - pretty good track actually and the only reason this gets 2 stars instead of 1 This strikes me as a hastily created Beyonce solo record where she’s live action role playing as a member of the Destiny’s Child ‘performance group’

Catchy but not very good
The songs just seem so... sterile. That's probably the autotune, but there's no grit here. Even with songs like "Sexy Daddy" (yikes), they just don't have an earthy quality too it. "Survivor"... I always felt the chorus was WAY too repetitive on that song. "Independent Women (Pt. 1)" (didn't know there was a part 2, and there's probably a reason for that...) still works really well. The Gospel Medley... again, with the autotune, it just doesn't SOUND real. Listening to one of Beyonce's later albums we had rated... there is more of a bite to it because she wanted that there. This just feels so manufactured, thanks to that autotune and it just left me cold throughout. The artificial drum sounds didn't help either. So yeah, it just hasn't... aged well.
Catchy as hell. I mean, the first three tracks were massive hits and that's because they took/sampled the right beats, put them on repeat, and combined them with some of the best pipes in the business at the time. I love meaningful lyrics and this ain't that (Independent Women and Survivor are well-meaning but a little drivel-y) but you have to tip your hat when Bootylicious and its lyric "I don't think you're ready for this jelly" are now both pop culture mainstays. That's kind of this album in a nutshell - trying to empower women and be some new age feminism, sometimes doing that (The Story of Beauty) and sometimes sounding like juvenile schlock (Apple Pie a la Mode, Sexy Daddy) or even taking down other women (Nasty Girl, Fancy). But the beats are tough to resist. Rock is my thing, and there are rock albums out there that are 5-start despite throwaway lyrics because the music slays. This is close to that. The first third is banger and the middle third holds strong (with a different feel in the upbeat Happy Face and sorrowful Emotion) but the songs dip slightly in the last third. A strong 4, maybe it deserves more.
I was surprised by how much I liked Beyonce's album on the 1001 albums, so I tried to give this album a fair listen, even though I'm generally not an R&B fan. This album is ok, just not my style. Independent Women Pt 1 and Survivor were catchy and Fancy and Happy Face were ok. The rest I could take or leave. I will say I definitely didn't like Bootylicious, even though it's a hit off the album. Using the guitar riff from Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove) should have been good, but it was annoying that they never changed from the one note! Bottom line re: this album: Not terrible, just not my thing.
If this doesn't get you boppin' at least a little you may not actually like music.
i have already listened so many times...
There is clearly a superstar songwriting team doing business here, and when these girls work together their name is certainly fitting. But the huge streak of mean-spiritedness in this record dampers it, especially because it's the type of animosity directed outwards while trying to look like the better person. That just never sits well with me, personally, and makes the more uplifting or upbeat tracks just feel hypocritical.

Good god. I did not remember how jam-packed this thing was with hits. And to think that this DC3 unit only had been forged a mere month before recording - ridiculous talents. Of course Beyoncé is the star here but the production was top-notch for its age (maybe a bit dated right now) and the songs hold up (despite the passé Charlie’s Angels movie references). Still, can’t fault this turn of the century gem.
As is probably going to be the case with at least 50% of this list, this is not one of my genres. Still, it's obviously very well done. If it was my kind of thing, it'd be higher than a three.
The first 3 songs are nostalgia on speed. But that’s probably where it peaked, you dont really need to listen to the rest. It’s ok pop music that seems to have the self assurance that I don’t think it deserves after those lead tracks. Repetitive, bit bland, meh. An EP wouldve done.
The singles off this were heavily on rotation in 'Innfusion', the bar I worked in during college which did trebles + mixer for £2.50. So it's the audio equivalent of sticky floors, sick, aftershock and knobheads. I imagine it's a similar listen to everyone else regardless of their employment history. Very much not my thing and when I think about it there were better songs in the '90s/00s RnB' category. 2 for nostalgia.

Obviously iconic and era defining, but I’m still not sure about the message. I remember mocking the idea of boasting about “buying my own shoes” back in the day. Listening now the slut shaming of Nasty Gurl caught my attention. Some weird disconnects and/or hypocrisy in play here.
Heard the singles of course, but never listened to the album. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I would prepare for something slick and digestible, but there was depth and complexity

Truly the Beyoncé show, the album that just showed here is a superstar with backing singers. There was no way the producers would let the others shine. Goes the way of so many r and b albums - huge bangers to open, filler to close. But the bangers are huge and worthy of the extra star. And this is the Beyoncé show.

Oh-eee-YO-eeh-oooh-hooo-eeee-aaahh-yeah! Independent Women is terrible. Survivor is terrible. Bootylicious is actually reasonably good. Certainly the best of a bad bunch. The trilling, vibrato, vocal runs - so distracting. The music doesn't seems to have any real structure either. Every progression has a cut-off. Every tear-down stops short. It's like musical edging, and nobody comes. I just can't get behind it.

Today's album is an R&B/pop album by a powerhouse group of women, Destiny's Child. This is where Beyonce got her start. All three of these women are experts of their craft, and the harmonies that they can create are things of beauty. This is Destiny's Child's third studio album, and it suffers from being front loaded for sure. The first three songs are absolute bangers, but after the halfway mark on the album, it kind of settles down into a boring run of the mill R&B record. All the "in your face, unapologetic girl power" attitude is lost, and the slow ballads begin. Overall, not a bad album, but also not a stellar performance. If the pace that was set at the beginning of this album had been maintained, this would easily have been a 4 or 5 star record. Favourite songs: Survivor, Independent Women (Part 1), Bootylicious, Sexy Daddy, Nasty Girl, Happy Face Least favourite songs: Apple Pie a la Mode, Independent Women (Part 2) 3/5
Survivor starts out way too strong with three absolute bangers back to back. And while Beyoncé's vocals really are out of this world, the rest of the record does not live up to the strong start. I am just not that interested in vocal phrasing after vocal phrasing, and that late 90's/early 00's RnB production is just goddamn awful. 'Brown Eyes' was cool though.
I was worried Destiny’s Child would’ve exhausted themselves starting off the album this strong. While they sure seem less inspired along the way Survivor still manages to keep me rather involved throughout - mainly due to Beyoncé’s pipes.
A good album for the time, however, listening again in 2023... Just doesn't hold up. 2/5

It's easy to see why these ladies dominated the charts.
This is a weird one. Obviously it was a big album at the time, and Destiny’s Child benefits in hindsight from Beyoncé’s place in culture, but there is some really really cringey early 2000s culture on this album. From the opening, the soundtrack tie in to Charlie’s Angels with name drops for the actresses, it seems like this is the definition of commercialized nonsense. I was kind of shocked by Nasty Girl, which weirdly embodies the early 2000s puritanical/slut-shaming culture of America and is absolute cringe, especially coming after Independent Women, Survivor, AND Bootylicious. It’s a really weird dichotomy of culture. Overall it's just incoherent as an album. There's no overarching theme or message. It bounces back and forth between female empowerment, slut-shaming/pick-me attitudes, lusting after a man ("Spotted me my baby's father" lol), and back to female independence - and that's barely even halfway through the album! I guess its an important listen for the cultural context and place in Beyonce's history, but woof, other than some catchy singles I did not like it.
Though there are several decent tunes, none of which are called Survivor or Bootylicious, i do not dig Beyonce's voice, so any album that contains it is a headache

YAS! ICONIC! Some real duds on here mixed in with the songs that are eternal.
Highlights: "Fancy," "Bootylicious" One of the things this album gets right is polarizing its jams and slow songs on either side of the album. 90s-00s R&B is so hyperactive you don't really want to be jerked back and forth tonally between what are effectively two different styles of music. The beats can be pretty ridiculous at times; I always get a laugh out of all the Scooby-Doo auxiliary percussion in the prechorus of "Say My Name," and here you also have some incredibly goofy stuff like the dog chew toy going off the entire time on "Sexy Daddy" and "Independent Women Pt. 2" superimposing the Carmen theme over a staccato flute and xylophone unison like a Tom and Jerry episode. Unintentionally hilarious. There are problems with Beyonce that extend to Destiny's Child. One is that there's always a gap between her awesome ability and the music she puts out; she compromises more than she needs to for the sake of commercialism. If vocal melismas are the meat of this era's R&B, like guitar solos in 70s-80s rock, Beyonce is strong but safe, like Stevie Ray Vaughan. The most interesting thing you'll hear is an 'outside' riff she uses twice that's lifted off 1998's "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy & Monica. You're not going to get that kind of excellence here. One way Beyonce does not play it safe is rhythmically. Once you notice it, you can't really unhear how her rapid verse delivery steps all over the beat. I would feel sorry for the producer that tried to quantize and sync all that, but nobody tried. Who's going to tell *Beyonce* that she has to do twenty more takes to stick the landing on each of these? In spite of all these things, by virtue of raw talent and skill, a good standard at the tail end of a golden age for R&B.

Reading up about Destiny's Child, no wonder I didn't get into this. I mean, sure, this wasn't the section of the record store I was in generally, anyway. But also - it seems like across the first three or four albums the group kept dropping and adding members. I can't follow that kind of stuff - I need a rock solid group of people that I'm listening to. Beyonce wasn't Beyonce yet so that didn't mean anything to me. So anyway. This is pretty sharp. Remember a few days ago when this list tried to tell us that the Neneh Cherry album was a must-hear? And is it supposed to be on the same level as this? Because it isn't. Beyonce could deliver pizza and make it feel like a premium experience. That said, there seems to be a lot of calling out folks who I don't know - from what I read it's about the former members of the group. I don't know - I don't need all that shit. It makes everything seem petty, like an album based on some reality show. Real Housewives of Destiny's Child. Pretty disappointing. "You know who you are" is a piss poor lyric. Still, it's Beyonce, so like it probably could be 4 stars, but all that weird in-fighting bullshit throws it down to 3.5, so then it becomes a 3.
As expected the vocals are good, impressive at times. However, this is very much a relic of its time, where CD albums were bloated to hour plus monstrosities and quality control suffered. Another sign o' the times - albums frontloaded with the hits, making this a very uneven listening experience. Dissatisfying, ultimately.

Such a great album. I knew some of the songs from airplay back when it was released, but I hadn't heard the whole album before. This group is fantastic, and Beyoncé is, well...Beyoncé. She is truly in a league by herself.

Cut that last 10 seconds though, goddamn. Worst Song: Brown Eyes. Every other track on the album is so uplifting, and then there's this mundane love song in the middle. It's a sweet song, but it doesn't belong at this spot of this album. Overall: This is so good. The three all sound fantastic, even when Beyonce stands out as something else entirely. Listening to this album feels having a squad of ladies behind you reminding you not to take no shit. The beats are early 2000s gold. A beautiful time capsule.

It is SO funny to sing about independent women who can buy their OWN diamonds without needing a man, and about how hot your booty is, before launching into "Nasty Girl" and shaming a woman for not wearing clothes and telling her men won't respect her. i never liked pop
This is one of those ones where I looked at the runtime and though how am I going to sit through an hour of this. I am about as far from Destiny's Child's target audience as you can get. I did end having a little bit of fun hearing some songs that were so in the popular consciousness back then but that's about as much as I got out of it. The production on this sounds paper thin and has absolutely no oomph behind it. Its definitely mixed with the anticipation of being listened to in mono on the utterly awful radio and phone speakers of the time which I think is a massive cop out. At least give the kick drum some punch, its just a simple little EQ trick and would bring so much personality to the whole thing. Ultimately its because of this being the early days of pop music being made by committee which is something I absolutely can't get behind. Beyoncé is credited as a songwriter on almost every track and you get the impression that was more of a business arrangement than anything. Outside of the 3 big songs there is absolutely nothing exciting on the track list. A non offensive album but totally lacking in anything that appeals to me in music.

It is a delicious pop R&B tour. Lots of catchy melodies and beats, with some clear highlights with Survivor, Bootylicious and Dangerously in Love. However, i have no idea what to make of Outra Thank You. I could tolerate maybe 30 seconds of them doting on their bandmates, but holy god... 4 minutes?!??! I'm giving them a pass on this, pretending it wasn't added to the album.

I mean there’s nothing musically bad about it and it starts off with two singles but this album was a drag and is way way too long for what it is 2/5.

Pop music from a genre that’s not up there for me would normally get a lower rating but they do sign well and I get that this was influential. So . . .
There's a handful of well-written tracks (like Survivor or Fancy) with choruses that stay with you and I like the interplay between the different vocalists, not that I could tell them apart. Overall I find the sound a bit one-dimensional with similar themes, but I guess that's R&B for you - the packaging is as important than the content. Beyonce's material these days is more eclectic, maybe due to the fact that she has more artistic control and isn't afraid to take chances.
I've never listened to Beyonce or Destiny's Child before, but with sales of over 10M, it's worth a shot right? Wrong - I couldn't make it past the third song. Next please.
First I looked to see if it was possible to give an album zero stars, but you can't. This along with Taylor Smith (I know it's Swift) and countless others is what's wrong with the music of today
An energetic and fun R&B pop album, it does what it does stronger than most examples of the genre of the era. The production is tight and smart (although dated of its era), taking strong influence from G-funk, electronica, and disco, not falling into lazy or annoying samples. Vocals are strong and catchy, led by the dynamic range of Beyonce, but the harmonic combination of the three brings out life and energy you wouldn't find otherwise. It starts off with 3 strong impactful singles, but the rest of the album can be a mixed bag, edging on the poorer side. Plenty of songs have highlights, but the majority are either completely forgettable or nothing more than a fancy display of the girls' vocal abilities. With its hour long, this makes it really drag on, but "Emotion" and "Brown Sugar" are redeeming tracks near the end.

There are certainly far worse albums on this list, and far worse albums with disappointingly better global ratings. That being said, I just have never really bought into the Beyoncé hype. I think she is a good singer and certainly very damn attractive, but just not as good as the overwhelming hype she gets every time a single word leaves her mouth. The first three tracks have all become classics, the titular song having gained an unintentional but extremely powerful message behind it. All in all it is a very mediocre album that even though it isn't my thing I can at least understand why it made the list.

I'm beginning to think Beyonce actually likes all the attention she receives. There are a handful of bangers here, but the album is mostly half baked ideas.
Really brings me back to middle school. I'm enjoying how wholesome the themes are, how unwavering in their conviction. Respect. The cheesy orchestral synth sounds don't hold up in my opinion, but beyond that I thought it held up pretty well.

Nostalgisk, på ein dårlig måte
Here's the exact example of what a *good* album should NOT be, and this in any genre out there. To put it in a nutshell, Destiny's Child was essentially an amazing act when it cames to their singles, but they *never* released any masterpiece in the album format. According to many fans of "Queen Bey", it's a problem lead singer Beyoncé would fix later on during her solo career, starting with her eponymous fifth full-length effort in the early 2010s, (followed by *Lemonade* and the very recent *Renaissance*, released last year). But that's a story for another time, I imagine... To return to *Survivor*, the album admittedly starts strong and self-assured with "Independent Women Part 1" and the title track (two insanely catchy cuts that are part of the four or maybe five most famous songs ever performed by the iconic r'n'b girl group during their short career). Those two cuts sure trigger a roaring start--and *yes*, the three next songs after them still hold their own pretty well, all things considered (especially the kinky and lively "Bootylicious" ). Unfortunately, everything following the fifth song peters out, and it peters out incredibly *fast*, whether in the US or the longer, "international" edition of the album. Very quickly indeed, this record loses focus and momentum through a series of very questionable choices: meandering, pointless production lacking any sense of build-up and sprinkled with weird and useless sound effects seemingly taken from Super Mario Kart; technically spotless vocal performances that yet meander very much as well, due to predictable lines with no real "soul" in them (in spite of a very "performative" bravado here displayed to hide the lack of any original content or idea); interspersed between the faster cuts, a few cheesy ballads that seem to have been heard a thousand times before--both types of tracks being filler and no killer; and finally, a conclusion that is basically a gigantic question mark: what's the real point of that accapella cut "Gospel Medley"--going through all the clichés of a Harlem mass withouth any really *personal* input added to them--here followed by the awkward and dated "rapping" of the "outro" "Thank You"? Can someone explain? So what we *really* have to deal with here is only five tracks going from decent to great. Everything else is totally irrelevant. Most other reviewers using this app seem to agree with me by the way; up to now, there's only been *5* reviews that gave a 5/5 mark to this record (including a review in French that is mostly off-topic). That's an incredibly *low* number for such a "mainstream" album. Maybe someone could write a book called "The 1001 *EPs* You Should Listen To Before you Die" and place *Survivor* in it? You tell me. Number of albums left to review: 686 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 153 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 71 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 89 (including this one)

Some classic hits. Never heard the intro to bootylicious before. Honestly though all these songs sound exactly the same to me. Apart from the nostalgia I personally really don’t like this style/era of production. Everything sounds so squashed and sterile and digital. The percussion loops/samples are so robotic and the vocals are so processed there’s just barely any human aspect to this music. I know I’m not the target audience for this but I’m just not interested or excited about anything in these recordings. 2.5
I obviously owned (and maybe still own?) this CD. The music videos for these are ingrained in my brain. It’s funny listening to this realizing it’s basically a Beyoncé album when I did not even realize that when it came out. The repetition in these songs can get annoying at some points. However according to my rating scale it gets a 4 because Bootylicious and Emotion are songs I could listen to once a week for the rest of my life

Aux dernières nouvelles, ces derniers suent toujours autant dans leur T-shirt tête de mort et grattouillent régulièrement le dos de leurs innombrables clébards couverts de puces porteuses de maladies que l'on pense disparues. N'hésitez pas à me dire si la situation a évolué.
Une équipe de professionnels surentraînés vient d'être envoyée par mes soins au domicile de mon affreux camarade d'écoute robespierre afin d'éliminer ce dernier. Ses avis désastreux sur la rnb ont en effet dépassé les bornes avec le 5 accordé à cet album, auquel j'accorde un minuscule 4/5.
A modern classic - very enjoyable listen
A milestone in vocal arrangements, I guess. This isn't my thing. But I seem to remember how different Destiny's Child was back in the day. We weren't ready for that jelly. But seriously, it kind of peters out as it goes along. They tried a little too hard to follow their survivor "concept".
First time listening to a Destiny Child album all the way through. After listening to it I hope it's the last time I do.

man they wrote some big hitters. not my personal taste, but no denying, they did what they did very well.
Some timeless singles, but the album hardly feels like a classic. Gospel Medley was lovely though.
I really got nothing out of this album a 3 star album according to Allmusic.com so for me a mediocre album by a mediocre artist....sounds like a 2 star
This album is certainly a time capsule. R&B has changed a lot since this album was popular, and it's neat to go back and listen to stuff from that era that helped define a sound that has long since passed. At least, it's neat to go back and listen to the good stuff from that era (I'm still angry that I had to listen to that Limp Bizkit album). This album really holds up, both in terms of its music and its messaging. It's packed full of monster hits, but there's also really no filler on the album 4/5

Great pop, catchy and straight into the three mega hit singles. Drifts off into weak slushiness towards the end, but the majority is good upbeat pop. 3.5
There are some classic tracks here, most notably "Independent Women Part I," "Survivor," and "Bootylicious." That said, those are the first three tracks, and there's a LOT of filler after that. And does anyone else find it mildly ironic that "Nasty Girl" is the track after "Bootylicious," or is it just me?
Some real chart topping bangers. What a fun time for early 2000s pop & interesting to see the start of Beyoncé & Kelly's career. And let's not forget Charlie's Angels - good times.
Fine for what it is. Not really my bag at all, but it was nice to listen to during the work day. Change of pace.

Good album, famous tracks, nothing quite like it. Very typical late 90s, early noughties R&B partly because it's so influential. Loose in some areas and very much targeted towards a listener other than myself but nevertheless an icon of the genre.
it's OK, fun songs, although a bit repetitive. I don't like Beyonce.
Classic millennial R&B. Vocals are lovely. Arrangements are very much of that era, but excellent. Starts really strong, but overall it gets old pretty quick. Fave Songs: Independent Women Part I, Survivor, Emotion, Dangerously in Love, Bootylicious, The Story of Beauty

Better than I thought it was going to be. This type of music is definitely not my thing but there are some good tracks here, even outside of the mega hits that really frontload the album. After the midpoint, the songs get steadily worse culminating in the second last song being a straight-up Christian song, and last song having some Christian elements but is mostly just some kind of childish listing of all the reasons why each of the 3 members are friends, which I found very strange.
