Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Talented voices and soulful singers pressed through a weird hodgepodge of turn of the century moral and social incoherence. It is actually a little incongruous to have so much passion applied to bad topics at time. Still, the voices and arrangements shine more than once. Of course, I just can't see ever returning to this album.

I recognised the first three tracks, learned from Wikipedia that this was Beyoncé’s gig, thought it wasn’t half bad but then the rest of the album was REALLY BORING. 2.5

objectively good i just don’t like pop music

My rating 2.2 This sounded like over produced gar-bage!

I've never really got the hype and fanaticism over Destiny's Child and moreover Beyoncé. Can't argue that they have skill and talent, but it's just not for me.

There is no denying Beyoncé's x factor, star power and talent. But her musical imprint is less than whelming. Beyond underwhelming. For any ounce of ground I can gain in positive favor there is just one dumb late 90's early 00's production sample that just drives the morale meter towards zero. Already identified here that the first 4 songs are the album. The rest is mediocre in period pop. Wish I had kinder words. The entirety of Gospel melody brings this up and entire star in rating. Love when 3 part harmonies harmonize. Hell yeah.

Having a couple of good tracks doesn't help much when they have to carry 13 others. The lyrical whiplash from Bootylicious to Nasty Girl was so wild I had to go check the lyrics for all songs afterwards to try to glimpse some semblance of a coherent world view (I failed)

Starts out strong and then the fourth song just sours the whole album.

Probably is a very important album for a a bunch of folks but not for me. I feel bad rating it as a poor album but at the end of the day it's an album designed to sell millions for a specific audience. I'll never listen to this again, it's just so draining have to get my through this absolute dirge. It's R & B production by numbers and it doesn't matter that the girls have great voices. Its not getting a one out of respect for it's target audience.

Catchy, but man it’s whiplash going from one song to the next as far as point of view. Theres some wild toxic femininity in here

Better than I expected, but that just means it won't be a 1 star rating. Enough with the God stuff. That's not really part of my review. The music is insipid the voices are good, but dull. Not my genre, so others may disagree.

Didn't like it then, don't like it now :) feels weird giving this 2 stars though since I gave the previous album 3 by mistake, but....

Not very good or memorable.

I knew Beyonce's branding was heavily focused on "girl power," so was surprised to find how much of her content is actually all "Except for the girls we don't like! Especially the girls who like us!" and "Lets simp men!" Good vocals but terrible and disjointed messaging and hated the electronic ADHD backing "music"

With how amazing the first three songs are, it's really a shame how bad everything else is

Nej tack.

mucho falseto

Wow this is very early 2000s. The title track is a banger but the rest of the album is a real mixed bag. Some good, some bad.

Got off to a great start with some well known songs. Not sure who thought the next few songs should be on an album. 2 decent ones after that and the end is cringe😵

Inconsistent pacing. After the singles it really dropped

Destiny’s Child is a high 2 sadly, great singles, good production throughout but so many songs that pass me by

Over produced

Didn’t realize this album was so slut shamey, and biblical, and horny. A real enigma. Kelly: “Girl, you need to have some respect for yourself, put some clothes on.” Beyoncé: “I’m going to go party with my friends, just kidding is that a guy? I’m going to have his child.” Michelle: “Jesus loves me, oh yes He does. For the Bible tells me so.”

Nice. Favourites: Independant woman 1, Emotion, Dangerously in Love

I haven't listened to a whole Destiny's Child album before but naturally even I know the hits. After the first three songs I was actually quite excited but then "Nasty Girl" happened and the album didn't recover from it or maybe I just lost my interest.

I went into this knowing the singles and wondering if this really belonged here. I think I still mostly feel the same. It was really good but it really started to drop quick about half way through and I eventually stopped a couple of tracks from the end. Some brilliant bass parts.

How come everytime there is an album I am not looking forward to, it always ends up being an hour long? This isn't the worst album ever, but it is really boring. Every song feels exactly the same: generic uptempo r&b beat on loopbfor the entire song, random vocal runs, repeat the same chorus line over and over again. Once you've heard the first 30 seconds of a song, you've basically heard all they have to give for that song. These are really some of the weakest choruses I've ever heard, a lot of the songs feel like their choruses are just extentions of the verse, except now they are repeating the title of the song. I am by no means a Beyonce fan, but I expected a lot more than this. Mid 2.

Good intro few tracks, I think it’s important to understand tht what destiny’s child does, it does well. Masters the R&B category. Is it for me? No. The album has a concrete selection of music fails to take me anywhere imaginatively and fails to be ambitious with its storytelling variation. I guess that’s what I prioritise with albums. Anyone can produce bangers, but can you utilise music to create a new world for us to explore? That’s what it takes to produce a good album.

So not my thing. Apparently this was huge with 4 tracks that have huge listener counts (339M, 583M, 288M and 118M). I've never heard any of the songs other than "Survivor". I'd never throw this on for enjoyment. The best part of the album was the "Eye Of The Tiger" intro to "Bootylicious" which was Bootyatrocious!! It went downhill fast, "Nasty Girl" with its stupid lyrics, "Fancy" which should have been left on the cutting room floor, the lyrically ridiculous "Apple Pie...", the annoying "Sexy Daddy", the talking "Outro Thank You", too many to name. Across the board the musicianship was non-existent, it was an automated drum machine staccato with no emotion in the instrumentation, backing three chicks who all wanted the mic. The cover of the BeeGee's "Emotion" started out tasteful but one more vocal run and I was going to stab a pen in both ears! Hated it, not a single track I'd ever want to hear twice. Was this on here as a monumental women empowerment album? I'll give it two stars for popularity, maybe some influence, but it's really shallow and the music behind the layers and layers of vocals, is super weak.

Let's be honest, this is a Beyonce album. The other singers are there, but it's a Bey album, to its detriment, I think. While Queen Bey has incredible talent and vocal range, I don't think it does enough to peel this album away from the era that it was arranged. It SOUNDS like an early 2000s album. There are just too many hallmarks of the time to make it timeless, which is what I think makes an upper echelon album. I would love to hear more from the other singers. It's not a great album in and of itself. Even though this album was insanely popular during my prime music listening age, I just don't think it has aged well.

Lol wtf is this doing here.. though why not? I had some fun! Kidding aside, BK is pulling this off, I'd like it more if it were a solo acapella. Though again, who am I kidding, I wouldn't have liked it more.. Btchs got me confused

I tried to listen to the whole thing. I can't do it, only got halfway through. I like Beyonce now, but this early phase of her career is not for me.

completely loses steam in the more sultry second half, a shame because some of the songs on here are rly fun and nostalgic

Some of these songs have become ubiquitous. The rest sound a lot like the ones that have become ubiquitous.

I’ll start with the positives, the first three tracks are wildly huge hits. They are also so iconic for their genre and sound that those songs are legitimately timeless. That being said the album as a whole doesn’t really work for me. It’s really long and there’s a lot of filler. The big surprise song on this album that I actually adore legitimately is this song called “dangerously in love” it’s weird to say any song on this very well known album is a hidden gem, but if this album has a hidden gem it’s definitely this song. Like most of the album it really shows everyone’s range and talent as singers, but it’s also just got something about it that I really enjoy that I don’t get from the other tracks. So it has some real high points that are hard to disparage, but as a whole this was a mediocre album. Great production though.

Couple of huge hits on this one and of course, Beyonce, but overall just lyrically and musically too simplistic. Going back and forth between 2 and 3 stars until the ridiculous Outro solidified the 2

Utterly vapid. Beginning of the end for music.

there are good songs in here, but it's a pretty hard listen as a whole because 1) blown out mastering; really annoying and almost unlistenable on headphones 2) long runtime and 3) there are too many subpar songs to wait for the good songs to come

Whether name-dropping the stars of the upcoming Charlie’s Angels remake on “Independent Women Part I,” lurching between the body-positive confidence of “Bootylicious” and the judgmental tone of “Nasty Girl,” or sinking further into the same hollow provocations of tracks like “Sexy Daddy,” all while leaning heavily on recycled samples and overproduced drum programming, Survivor by Destiny’s Child captures some of the worst impulses of American pop music circa 2001.

Definitely a product of the times. This isn’t a Destiny’s Child album; it’s a 64-minute press release for Beyoncé’s solo career. It's a heavily programmed feminist musical manifesto with some catchy dance-laden tracks. The rest is repetitive and were there not a need for tracks to fill an entire album, I doubt they would have made the cut. They're forgettable at best like Kelly and Michelle, who are just there to sing while Beyonce catches her breath.

This is not for me. I do give Beyonce credit for her gumption and tenacity. She's got a fine voice, but sings in simple pop songs that don't move me at all. Cool that she start being more about empowering women here and did even more later, but then she doubled back and started slut shaming. Don't know if she continued that later, but here's it's weird. This might be fun for people who like simple pop with some danceable bits, but I won't listen again. It's a 2 for me

This is kind of an interesting one. It's basically super-produced RnB to the point that it becomes pop music, made during the era where that was a recipe for success (see: near-millennium boy bands). A lot of that music created the soundtrack to my adolescence, including more than one of the songs here. I haven't listened to much of it in album form, though. Survivor has some very catchy tunes, but without much depth in musicality. It reminded me a bit of Britney Spears' ...One More Time in a way, due to how poppy and produced it was. But also in how it sounded more like a lab creation than a work of passion. That probably goes hand-in-hand with the production style. It's all about the hooks, and as a result there's not much below the surface. Outside of the catchiness, it was hard to engage with or believe in. Comparing it with some of Destiny's Child's earlier tracks showcases that issue for me; as an example, Say My Name felt like they meant it more than anything here. Unfortunately, the best songs on the album are the first few tracks. After that, the momentum really starts to slow down. The middle portion is probably the weakest part. It gets a bit better toward the end, though the gospel track seemed like a strange diversion from the vibe the rest had. The length makes it worse, as there's really not enough good here to warrant the near hour-long runtime. Plenty of songs could've been cut to make it a stronger, tighter album. As it is, it gets old pretty quickly after Bootylicious. This album still fun and catchy, but the whole is not that impressive to me. While I'd definitely listen to a few of the songs here again, I feel no pull to revisit Survivor as an album. Maybe I'm just not ready for this jelly. Overall: 2/5

First three songs are absolute bangers but falls off so hard after that.

We go from "Girls are awesome" to "girls are slutty" to "damn, that man is hot, gimme that" to thanking all these women who helped them get where they are and quoting Bible verses. Pick a lane, girls. My rating: 2/5

shoutout the song about slags

This album is so crazy like what do you mean there’s bootylicious, nasty girl/fancy, and the outro praising god and sisterhood?? Honestly so annoying to listen to

It sounds extremely early-00s. Also, it's extremely hypocritical. In Survivor, they sing about never talking shit about people on the internet because "my mama taught me better than that," and, "I'm not got' blast you on the radio (I'm better than that), and there are several references to being christian in multiple songs. Then there's a song called "Nasty Girl" where they admonish women for dressing scantily, with the lyric "Don't walk out your house without your clothes on," while Beyonce is on the cover of the album with her tits out. Then there are the "independent women," female empowerment songs, yet the aforementioned "Nasty Girl" has the lyric "These men don't want no hot female that's been around the block female." Well, which one is it? Should women dress with the singular focus of male approval, or should they dress in whatever way makes them feel confident and comfortable? Which option has Beyonce with her tits out on the cover of the album? There are bigger problems in the world, but hypocrisy is annoying. 2 stars.

vibey but not my jam

I tried to do this justice because it's so famous, although I am hardly the target audience. But it really does sound like they had about two and a half songs, so rehashed them over and over again (why so overlong and so much filler?), frequently contradicting their own supposed strong independent women outlook while they were at it. Well, as I said, I tried.

Well welll well. I was excited for this as it birthed some all time bangers which you could file under "early feminist pop" HOWEVER... This is a crazy album actually. Obviously it's great in places, but front loading all three greats is an EXTREMELY bold move. The second half.... What on earth? From feminist anthems straight into slut-shaming! From a random very specific spoken word best friend song to straight up worship music at the end?! Is it sexy? Yes? Is it judgemental of other women's sexuality? Also yes. Is it feminist? Kinda? Is it low key also a worship album? Yes?????? My mind is boggled.

There’s a lot to take in here. I was feeling pretty positive about the album in the first half, lots of bops and just generally a fun vibe. But then there’s Nasty Girl which sounds good but the content of the song is questionable. Then the second half of the album slows down. They aren’t doing anything that interesting so it just drags. Then the last track should be a nice sentiment but just makes me feel like I’m in church. Not a total waste of time but there’s too much I could do without.

🤷🏿‍♀️ never cared-never will

All the bangers up front, truely great bangers but it really makes the rest of the album terribly boring

Was not expecting the Baltimora Tarzan Boy bit in Nasty Gal and honestly it overshadowed pretty much every other thought about this entire album

Hard to be objective on this one. Just not my taste at all, listening all the way through was a struggle.

What a weird album... It feels like an unnatural mix of independent woman powerful 'wildly shaking ass' vibes, and then 2000's purity/Slut-shaming culture. Sexy Daddy, Survivor and Bootylicious doesn't feel like they belong on the same album as Nasty Girl, and the transition between those songs very much gave me whiplash. Holy what. Outside of the first three songs, I don't think I'll really relisten to any of the album. It just doesn't feel... particularly remarkable outside of a few good singles, and I don't really love the heavy slut-shaming to lusting after men and female empowerment switch-ups. It only really feels relevant because Beyonce has a societal pull today, and it gives a look into the current discourse in the early 2000's, but outside of that, I don't feel anything big for this album

the girl hate after the songs independent women, survivor and bootylicious is nasty, girl

They are good at singing songs that are well produced. That is all

A pop record should definitely be shorter than this. Absolutely hilarious that this is billed as a trio when Beyoncé sings 90% of the album.

I thought i enjoyed this more - I like the one song …….

The singles are UNDENIABLE, undeniable. The birth of Beyoncé, early 2000 movie and club bangers. But man there is some major label glut everywhere else. What in the hell was Sexy Daddy?

After a promising start with some back-to-back pop bangers, the album quickly loses momentum and begins to feel more like a product trying to cater to multiple audiences. This is reflected in the mixed messages throughout the record, jumping from songs about women’s independence to others that seem to contradict that sentiment. In many ways, it feels like an album built around five juggernaut pop songs surrounded by too many filler tracks, causing it to drag on longer than it should. I still enjoyed the undeniable pop anthems "Independent Women, Pt. 1" and "Survivor", which even after all these years haven’t lost their edge.

Good album. Definitely had some good songs that charted them.

It's quite clear that Beyonce is a good singer, becaAAaauaUUUAauaAAUauaUAUAUAUse sheeeeeEEEEE neeEEeEeeeEEeeeeEEeveeeEEeeEer let's yYyyYyooOOOOOoooOOooooOOOooOouuUUUUuuUUUuUU FoOOoOooOoOooOOooOOrgeEeEEEeEEeeeeeeeeEEEEet iiiiiiIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIt. Joking aside, it's not terrible, but I don't really like it. Outside of a couple of odd moments, it's pretty samey, and seems to care most that you KNOW that they are technically proficient singers, and less that the music is actually good.

Banger, banger, banger - trash ⭐️⭐️

Album 1064 of 1089 Survivor - Destiny's Child (2001) Rating : 2.5 / 5 This isn’t a genre I naturally reach for, so I went in knowing it might not land squarely in my wheelhouse. I’m aware this represents the early years of someone many now consider “the Queen,” but that cultural weight doesn’t really factor into how I hear the music. The production is polished and professional, clearly designed to highlight the vocals and deliver radio-ready hits. You can hear the effort. You can hear the intent. Everything sounds exactly the way it was meant to sound. For me, though, many of the tracks hovered in the same lane. Nothing truly irritated me, but nothing really separated itself either. It felt consistent - maybe a little too consistent. That said, it’s easy to understand why it connected with so many people at the time. The confidence, the harmonies, the presentation - it was built to succeed. And it did. Props to the work that went into it. It just doesn’t register strongly for me on a personal level.

Crazy how produced this album feels. First three tracks are the familiar singles and then the album drops off a cliff and offers nothing interesting for another 15 tracks, including the totally incongruous last two tracks. Lab grown for maximum superficial engagement, but it worked for Beyonce, can't say the other two members got theirs (though I'm sure they're doing fine with the royalties)

A little chessy, A little dumb, generally fun. It peaks early on the first three tracks and then just gets a little annoying but this group had some great singles.

No. Not for me.

There's some talent here and some good production, but the music is tedious and uninteresting.

2 sterne

Gosh, this hasn’t held up particularly well. The songs come across as plastic. Style over substance. “Gospel Medley” is deadly. Still, I *probably* wouldn’t turn the dial if “Emotion” came on the radio. 2.5?

Listening Independent Women 1. I was re-experiencing the feeling of early 2000s clubs in Germany for a minute, which was great. Then, during the same song, I was totally taken out of that moment by all the Charlie's Angels references. I haven't ever considered it, but the callback to such a mediocre movie really sullies an otherwise fun song. The second track was also quite enjoyable, but after that the downhill slide began for me. These are some obviously incredibly-skilled women, and their voices/harmonies/arrangements are truly impressive. Actually, production in general is great too. Fun sampling and beats in general. There are a lot of ingredients of the highest quality on this album, but they seem to be out of proportion somehow. Overly repetitive song segments, strangely conflicting lyrics that raise women up on one track and put women down on the next, and generally a non-cohesive and sort of uninspiring mess. Many of this songs are 3-4 minutes long, but really wear out their welcome about 2/3 of the way through. I guess this is like when people say something has potential, but it is yet unrealized. I don't think this deserves 3 stars, even though there are so many positive elements within. Ultimately, I didn't end up finishing every song on the album because those elements are overshadowed by their detractors

Well I did it, I survived the album The title track’s a great song that you heard all the time growing up, but the rest of it is just super generic sounding R&B. I think Beyoncé’s an extremely talented vocalist but she’s never stuck out to me musically. I think the album was probably about 20 minutes longer than it needed to be. There’s some fun lyrics in there every once in a while but that’s about it. I don’t think it’s an abomination or anything but definitely not meant for me

They got great voices that are paired with more simple and minimal backing beats to let them shine. However, the downside is that the songs start to blend together with their similar sounds, which is unfortunely compunded by the longer length of the album (it's the CD era, so albums are no longer bound by a hard 40 minute length, but still) Also, I listen with headphones, so the bass and beats started to tire my ears out. Even with all that, I can't say it's a bad album. But it doesn't hook me as much as I'd like it to.

Admittedly, this is an album I’ve never heard by a group I had only heard of from word of mouth. And In case you didn't notice the very young photo of Beyoncé on the cover, this was her musical group before she went solo and really made a name for herself. I get that this project may be a big deal as it is one of Beyoncé and company's best work in Destiny's Child, but can we be a bit honest with ourselves and realize just how mediocre this album really is? There are some solid singles here, but other than that this is a pretty fine to decent Contemporary R&B that doesn't do a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. This album walks a very fine line of being just fine to being decent and I think I am just barely leaning on the decent side of things. It runs out of ideas and really tries throwing anything at the wall, including the main theme of this album back at tracks just so it can feel more cohesive and it just doesn't work. There are solid tracks here but not an album by any means. Did I need to hear this before I die? It’s not really my bag

Extra star for nostalgia, didn't really care for it other than that.

I get why the hits were hits. But other than harmonies there isn't much too the album.

Whether or not you need to hear this depends on the relevance of hiphop and pop culture in your life. IDGAF about either of those, so all I hear is a well-made mid-2000s time capsule.

Was ok, best songs were first

Kinda bland r&b and nothing on what Beyoncé would go on to do

I know this album was super-popular, but it's just not for me. It's very early-2000s R&B diva-y, and while that's fun for a while (I'll admit - I like the "Survivor" anthem), the lack of depth and variety get a little old. I'm mean, you've got three great singers - why not let them mix it up a bit? It feels very produced, like the focus was popularity and sales and not making good and interesting music. - Heard before? A few songs. - Will I listen again? No. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? No.

I'm not a fan of the vocal style used here, so I'm not that familiar with this group or Beyoncé though I recognize some of the songs. The music's fine, and the singers have talent - it just seems like the usual R&B club stuff. And a BeeGees cover, lol.

Not my usual cup of tea but will give it a go. I get that they can sing and they can sing really well. But the style shits me - i’m a good singer, see here my trills, look there my runs. It’s too busy when one person is singing that way. Here’s 3 of them! I got that it is an album celebrating women and written smartly enough not to box them into a stereotype or make them one dimensional - explores the beautiful, the good, the bad, etc. But i am not a woman, so harder to identify and i dont find the wordsmithing that interesting - its quite repetitive in some parts, probably in service of hitting every note on the scale as they belt out the vocals. Couldnt finish this. Partly not having time. Partly not holding my interest.

Not my type of music. Every song sounded the same

There were like two hits on this album that are okay, but the rest has been forgotten for a reason. When is the last time anyone listened to anything other than the top 4 most played songs on this album? I doubt anyone's listened to Perfect Man in the last decade.

Bootylicious to Nasty Girl is whiplash

Booooooooriiiiingggg ngl 🫩🫩🫩 But uh, yeah, I am not sure... Well, I am tired af, this is just eh, not that interesting, and too long for an album like this.

I'm not really doing this... Contemporary R&B is not my favorite but as Destiny's Child were the favorite of my then girlfriend, I know a bit about this band. Their strengths were their gospel choir like call and response singing - the best example here being "Nasty Girl", where they cite the slut shaming they had experienced as black girls growing up in Texas (kind of the"Money for Nothing" way) - and their innovation on the rythm side of things. Unfortunately, the latter is only slightly audible on "Survivor" - the good examples are on its predecessor "Writing's on the Wall". That said, once more the wrong album made the list.

Wished I could have liked it more. Got tired of the endless arpeggios.

Late 90’s and early ‘00’s pop sounds so cheap to me. It’s manufactured and soulless. Most genres age well over time but not this. I don’t feel this and it’s not for me.

This is where they started to falter as they got bigger. They spent half their time trying to rip off TLC’s innovations from Fanmail, and bored their audience at the end with a boring gospel medley and a superfluous closing track that tried very hard to be spoken liner notes. Too much filler and not enough killer.

Destiny's Child: Survivor Coming off the emotional highs of previous discoveries, Survivor feels like a significant shift toward commercial polish over lasting substance. While the vocal performances are technically proficient and the production is sharp, the album lacks the "atmospheric" depth that makes a record truly stay with you. It is a project defined by its era—aggressive, staccato pop-R&B that served as a massive cultural statement in 2001, but feels oddly fleeting today. While it’s a solid showcase for the group's vocal harmony, it ultimately struggles to justify its place on a "must-hear" list for those seeking a more profound or memorable musical connection.

Some albums just weren't made for me. That's ok. This was such a huge album in high school. Bootylicious is still a fun one. 2/5

The vocals are top shelf. But the songs themselves are juvenile— they might have been written, or at least approved by, the artists’ mothers. The delivery is not as confident as it should be, given those voices — kinda, “pick me!?”. Also, the production sounds thin — I don’t think the Queen Bee would allow herself to be recorded this way today. The title track predates Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter”. The latter sounds a bit more polished and powerful, but it’s a barely concealed copy of what’s here. This is a 2.

A few bangers but lots of rubbish

honestly i dont relly want to listen to this giving jt a 2 cuz that seems to be the average rating

Did Destiny's Child really need an hour? This albums is 30 minutes too long

First three songs are commercial R&B classics (and another further on), a funny mix of liberational feminist and puerile 'mean girl' themes, I appreciate it for what it is, but in general, commercially driven R&B tunes make me wish I was deaf, I pray I never have to listen to this album again, ⭐⭐

I wasn't quite ready for this jelly. Highlights: Survivor, Independent Women Pt. II, Emotion, The Story of Beauty

Typical pop album from the early nineties with a few bangers and an awful lot of filler

I'm glad there's only one Destiny's Child album on this list.

This sounds more like a product to sell and not an album. Or maybe I'm just the wrong public to it, I guess?

I am not the intended audience for this album, and, while it is perfectly acceptable pop fodder, I do not get why anyone would want to listen to a full hour of it. The themes of the record are weird, too. I guess it's an album of encouragement for women who have been jilted by all sorts of external adversaries, from unappreciative men (of course) to haters and biters. And then it ends with gospel and a full outro of what sounds like high school yearbook quotes. I feel like a survivor after listening to this record. Maybe I'm closer to the intended audience than I thought. Two stars.

Not my favorite, but I enjoyed some of the tracks. Not even sure how you would rate the DC3 albums.

Good production value but I am not the target audience

A very typical Y2K girlboss album. Wouldn’t normally have a problem with this, except it weirdly preaches love and empowerment while also engaging in slut shaming, then tops it with some “God loves me” BS. It comes off as shallow and socially conservative as a result — the kind of music you’d blast when your friend calls you out on your toxic bullshit.

R&B, 2001 -> 2

Tried to go in to this one with an open mind and had obviously heard the first 3 tracks but looking back I didn’t recognize how corporate and produced this album was starting with the lead off Charlie’s Angels megahit “independent women”. Kind of funny to took about being bootyliscious and in the very next song calling someone a nasty girl. Talk about ironic! Are the harmonies good? Yes. Is there talent there? Yes. But is this music for the Starbucks sipping basic bitch set? Also yes.

I listened to this as I ran through a very generic new housing development. All the houses looked the same, and were some shade of grey. This album is the musical equivalent of that neighborhood.

I don't think I was in the state of mind for this. I needed something mellow I think and it all felt like a lot of shouting.

Meh, They had a couple of hits and those are fun for what they are, but overall I feel like this album is really lacking in overall substance. It feels very overproduced and just didn't age that well. Also what's up with the up and down nature of this album? Lots of female empowerment, which is great but then quickly followed by slut shaming and thirsting over some dude. So weird....

I remember buying this album in middle school because for some reason at my Christian school they allowed some of us to do a choreographed dance to "Survivor," but I remember telling the guy doing the sound to turn it off immediately when the song ended so we didn't hit the into to "Bootylicious." I do remember liking this album, but honestly I'm not actually sure I listened to it the whole way through. "Survivor" is good. "Bootylicious" and "Independent Woman 1&2" are fun. I've always loved their cover of "Emotion" too. It actually showed off their harmonies well. But my god the rest of this album is a mess. Doesn't show off their vocals well, and the songs go on for way too long. Not to mention the lyrics are either incredibly slut shaming or just straight up corny. These were women in their 20s singing song that would have been cringey in their teens. And maybe it's because I just listened to Pump, which has a song that (surprisingly because it's Aerosmith) deals with abuse decently and is a good song, but "The Story of Beauty" was just godawful. And then that last song which is just them thanking each other? Did not need to be 4 fucking minutes long. I think Destiny's Child are talented, but this album is not it.

Really dug the cover of Emotion + the title track but otherwise I'm sorry to say I didn't like this one, Beyonce please forgive me 😔

Remember this one from when I was in middle and high school. I still don’t understand the hype. Was a pretty generic mid 00’s pop/hip hop album. Nothing stood out.

Oooof. A few ok songs, but I overall really did not like it.

Generic boring pop.

I remember when the album came out. It was fine. Not my favorite, nor something I would purchase.

Meh. Not my kind of music.

I get it. It's a pop record and it's catchy and danceable.

I went into this optimistically because I remember enjoying Destiny's Child in the past, but after the first few songs I began feeling more negatively about this album. Many of the songs felt petty and cringe. I like the title track and a few other songs but nothing I really loved. The whole thing sounds very Y2K which can be charming but it mostly feels pretty dated. Also, I don't know if this is a hot take or not but pop albums shouldn't be an hour long in my opinion. I don't usually mind longer albums when its a rock or hip hop album but I feel like pop albums tend to feel extra bloated as soon as they're over 45 minutes. Idk. Favorite track: Survivor 2.5/5

Really thought this album would have been better. It's got some high moments, and the beats are usually pretty good, but so much of this was just bland and forgettable. It was hard to keep my attention on this album. And I'm not sure if it's just the streaming version but there were some small audio cracks that annoyed me. Pretty long too

Generic sounding r&p/pop. What was so spectacular about this? 2/5

It won't be til her self-titled and especially Lemonade where we hit the inflection point of Beyoncé being a force of nature with songwriting to match. But there's plenty of her preternatural abilities on display in her performance serving these perfectly good pop songs. It's fun to revist the seeds of maybe the most important musician of the 21st century. That said, those first three tracks are doing a lot of heavy lifting to prop this album up to classic status. And why does "Independent Women," the first track out of the gates, keep the dumb shout outs to Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore, and Cameron Diaz? That was already dated by the time the album hit the zeitgeist, and it pulls all the attention from what is otherwise a banger. Why not just make one version for the soundtrack and another for Survivor? And how could an album with a song like "Nasty Girl" qualify for this list?

Love individual songs but an album is too much of the same

There is some serious shite on this album! And some good tracks. Bootylicious rules! So does Independent Women pt1. Nasty Girl might have some dumb anti-female lyrics, but it's a good tune. Everything else is generic R&B crap. Way too long as well. 2/5

Not floating my boat.

It was ok Not really my thing.

I was adjacent the target audience of this album when it came out. Its release corresponded with the movie “Charlie’s Angels” which used a few of the songs. One of the last instances of the partnership between music and film that had artists release blockbuster singles. The album was huge. Apart from the opening tracks (3 to be exact) the rest of the album did not sit well with me. It often repeats itself verbatim. I was also a bit confused by a track that was calling a woman trash for leaving the house without clothes only a few tracks previously praising the independence of their womanhood. I feel like the messaging was mixed.

They’re good singers, but it sounds hollow. "Bootylicious" followed immediately by "Nasty Girl" lol. This has a whole aura of self-importance and judgement. The best song was their cover of "Emotion".

I remember this album being really big when I was younger, but I have trouble getting into this style of music.

Front loaded with bangers the not much else

Interesting addition onto the list. I suppose it is impactful for the rise of beyoncé & the infusion of hip hop and r&b into pop, but with the gift of hindsight it's pretty much just normal 2000s pop.

I'm of an age where I have a nostalgic fondness for the singles from this album, but the rest of it is pretty rubbish. If it wasn't for Independent Women, Survivor and Bootylicious, I'd be tempted to give it a one as parts of it do make me genuinely angry. In particular, the complete lack of self awareness in sandwiching a song about how a promiscuous woman is nasty and should be ashamed between songs about their big booties' and going out dating and the very American lauding of wealth and consumption alongside loudly proclaiming their Christianity, are pretty tasteless themes on this album. Well done Destiny's Child, you can buy your own blood diamonds.

Ça commencer fort. Puis... Prout

#131/1001. For me, there is two kinds of rnb. Those, in which the singers yodel and squirm, and those, which I secretely love. I really wished this was the latter. But no. Ränkistelyä ja jolinaa. I loved the mash-up of bootylicious and smells like teen spirit, and I thing both songs are equally great. But for some reason it is not on this album. I’m pretty confident I will encoubter Beyonce solo albums on this list later on. Let’s review those masterpieces then.

For today's 1001 albums to hear before I die, I got an album I had never heard of by a group I had only heard of from word of mouth. Today I got Destiny's Child's 2001 album Survivor. In case you didn't notice the very young photo of Beyoncé on the cover, this was her musical group before she went solo and really made a name for herself. I get that this project may be a big deal as it is one of Beyoncé and company's best work in Destiny's Child, but can we be a bit honest with ourselves and realize just how mediocre this project really is? There are some solid singles here, but other than that this is a pretty fine to decent Contemporary R&B project that doesn't do a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. This album walks a very fine line of being just fine to being decent and I think I am just barely leaning on the decent side of things. It runs out of ideas and really tries throwing anything at the wall, including the main "survivor" theme of this album back at tracks just so it can feel more cohesive and it just doesn't work. There are solid tracks here but not an album by any means.

I didn't realize there was a ton of cringe on this record. Favourite Track(s): Independent Woman, Pt. I Least Favourite Track(s): The Story of Beauty

Well, this was pretty bad. Songs like "Sexy Daddy" and "Nasty Girl" are pretty cringey nearly 25 years later. This album aged like ripe cheese. That being said, I can't give it a 1. It's saved from that shame and lifted into mediocrity by a few things for me: 1) Survivor was a banger in 5th grade 2) the Gospel Medley was actually nice. 3) related to (2) these women do have amazing voices. I'm glad they broke out of this to (especially Beyonce) have successful careers afterwards.

Sometimes pop music can’t escape the time it was created. This is one of those times. The album is aggressively of the early 2000’s and has mostly not aged well. 2/5 Won’t listen again

i wonder what these ladies are up to now 2/5

I love the first two songs. The rest of the song on the album pretty much I skip, though unfortunately, I think it’s well-made, music and enjoyable for different crowd, just not for me. I don’t see myself revisiting anytime soon.

All the hits...but just not my cup of tea at all. i had to really struggle to sit through this. not unbearable, but below average for me. 2.5 stars

It's not unpleasant, their voices harmonise well. But that's about all I can say in it's favour. Not for me. 2

Straight out of the traps with the expected ‘bangers’. Had the other passengers in my car in a good mood at least. But once they were out of the way, the 2nd half of the album just descended into a beige mush.

Super slick American pop for the masses. Its pleasing to the ear, but nothing special.

Still not entirely clear what albums are being added retroactively coordinated with Dimery or at the whim of admin. Anyhow, this is fine but captures some of the difficulty I have with where soul and r&b went in the late 90s through roughly the mid-00s. First, there’s the perfectionism. Beyonce and co are nothing if not top notch vocalists and performers, but there’s such little life imbued in these takes either due to the treatment or genuinely impressive singing. It feels “air-brushed” within an inch of its life, not for any artistic statement, but to meet a certain market-ready standard. Second, the songs themselves, when they are audible beneath the production, prove to be little more than platforms for the above vocal mastery. I know, it’s a vocal trio, what do you want here, a GBV record? The Nicks/Eye of the Tiger rip stands out as a precursor to similar, but better austere tracks like Single Ladies, just the vocal hook and beat juxtaposed with the minimalist sample don’t do a whole lot for me.

Some bangers but mostly not.

Great voices. Some of the singles are legit. But really the album drags by the end

It's crazy how 20+ years ago, Beyonce was writing very similar lyrics - blending self empowerment with sexual freedom(?). I respect the craft and appreciate the empowerment, but I feel very neutral about the music. 2 star because it was a bit long

I’ve noticed that most of the turn of the century pop albums on this list seem to take a ‘some killer, lots of filler’ approach, whereby there are a handful of big singles that helped define the sound of the era, but not much of substance beyond that. And so it is here. I’ve never been a fan of the standard pop/R&B production of the time, while the lyrics are mostly well-meaning but sometimes misguided and usually kinda simplistic. And/or, y’know, I’m just not the target audience. But all the same I thought it was ok - I’ve heard plenty worse albums! 2.5

18 sange. Man burde have været mere kritisk.

I liked survivor but not really enjoying this very much. I can tell they are all talented but I can’t find a way to connect with this. Not for me

Zang gaat onrustig doorelkaar heen. Luistert niet fijn.

Listening to this with my girlfriend and we both said simultaneously, “All of these songs sound the same.” This was especially true when they were harmonizing together, and it just felt so repetitious. Towards the end of the album there was some variety, with ballads, gospel, and a Bee Gees cover. All in all it was not my thing, and an hour’s worth was a lot.

2/5. It's a good album. It's just not a genre or style that interests me.

I love the hits from this album. Beyoncé, Michelle and Kelly were on their best moment as a girl band. The album is pretty regular with a lot of fillers.

The last track of them just saying thank you made me really feel like that since I was so happy this boring mess was over.

I don't care if someone is a nasty gal. Good singles saves it.

So I knew the fist two songs, and they are OK; but then some, like Nasty Girl, just seam off. Definitely less that I had expected. 4/10

This album was way too long. It also was not fun, like if I’m listening to pop music I want to have fun. This is not fun music, it’s all either message songs that are dumb, or it’s songs that should be fun but musically are aggressive. The production is great though.

2 1/2 stars. Almost a 3. It’s a little to poppy for me. I did like the song Happy Face and a ballad. I doubt I’ll listen to the album again but might use Happy Face in a playlist.

Odd record, 90s r&b but clean lyrics and really tonally inconsistent. Weird to listen to sappy songs at work like “I know he loves me because he kisses me” (I hated Brown Eyes btw). Also weird to go from the R&B to the gospel medley and the back to “Dance Everybody DANCE!!”

Stevie Nicks, can you handle it? Emilia, can you handle it?

The musical equivalent of a paint-by-numbers picture - no heart, soul, or emotion, just music to make money rather than music to make art. Bollocks.

Me at the all you can eat: "I don't think you're ready for this belly!"

Most 17 tracks sounded the same.

Cue the 2000/2001 vibes. Kelly, Beyonce and the other one (Michelle?) can sing. And the independent woman song that was linked to the Charlie's Angels movie is fairly catchy, as are the next two songs. The album is top heavy and slumps after that. Including a depressing song at the tail end which is about sexual abuse (but the girl still being beautiful! Which I understand, but I feel there's more to address here). A gospel number addresses that they can sing, but not much else. And, I skipped out of the last song because it was just them being thankful to each other, not my thing. My big problem with the album is with the oxymoronic themes. 'I'm a strong independent woman and I will survive', but at the same time 'I'm sexy and my butt is too sexy for you, and I can get down with the rest of them'. I'm just not sure they've got a clear message. Perhaps I have the wrong end of the stick, I wasn't that engaged to listen to the lyrics to heavily. Perhaps I didn't understand. Perhaps it's a product of the times. 2 Stars.

This album gives vibes of hearing a couple of mainstream hits and thinking 'this band could become a guilty pleasure'. So you illegally download the album and listen to it through headphones. The album starts strong as you bop through the singles that you know and love, but then you get through the singles and hear the rest of the album, which you don't enjoy. You delete the album from your iPod that night, and listen to some Black Sabbath instead.

I've already heard this a million times since it used to be one of my sister's favorites but it's not something I'd willingly experience ever again.

The beginning of this was actually better than I was expecting. Mostly enjoyed it. Overall dragged on too long though.

This might have been the worst era of pop music ever

I was excited to see this come up this morning but it’s really not that good. Beyoncé’s talent is obvious but the song writing is terrible (I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly, every survivor lyric). Bootylicious still had me turning up the volume and I liked Independent women II. 2.5

1.6 F-Beyonce M-Kelly K-Michelle. I gotta say those Charlies Angels shout-outs are some of the most commercially sleazy things I have every heard. I guess I would use that to describe most of the album Dangeroulsly in love was the only standout for me in what was mostly an unlistenable effort. Interesting to see the Beyonce version on her solo album was a big hit but this one didn't really do anything. Both versions are very similar but the DC version is a bit more restrained, and it sounds like Beyoncé is in the background.

I appreciate where Beyoncé is today and enjoyed the Bee Gee's cover.

There are some good songs, especially the first three, with the prevailing theme of surviving (surprisingly), after a bad breakup. But it also seems to rely on Beyonce doing a little too much vibrato. There's not much variety between tracks. Not one of my top thousand.

I was a teen when this album came out and the hits were playing non-sop on TV music channels. At that time I liked 'Independent woman pt1', but I was bored by 'Survivor' and other hits. After a quarter of century this album sounds too dated. And I don't understand the contradiction of the lyrics, as the first songs are feministic which promote the independence of women, while 'Nasty Girl' is the opposite, it's criticism towards women who dress too freely. Overall the album doesn't have a clear theme and it's too commercialised. With almost 60 minutes it is also a too long album. Not a fan, 2 stars overall.

Good beats. Music hits. Not my lyrics

This album is emphatic in its message, but unfortunately can't figure out what that message is, leaving it a confusing mix of tracks. The music itself is OK, but feels dated now. It closes with what sounds like heartfelt messages, but after the massive commercial production of the rest of the album, it doesn't feel all that genuine. Favorite track: "Dangerously in Love"

This one's tough. I realize I'm not the prime demo for this one and Beyonce went on to become BEYONCE, but it doesn't super hold up after the first few songs that I already knew. THOSE are still bangers but the rest is uneven and overly long. It's not a bad album but I'm not sure it's one I really needed to hear before I die, maybe just the hits.

I understand why this is on the list but it just really isn't for me. A lot of the songs sound similar and even the hits have never clicked with me but that's just me.

Using 00s vibes are good for a minute but I don’t think it’s aged that well

Starts ok, the singles at the start are decent enough. I don't know if I would say I actually like them though, theyre just fine but I can see the appeal. The album falls apart after that point, this is so front-loaded Independent Women Part II felt like a weird, twisted parody of Pat I Although the blatant tie-in to Charlie's Angels with Independent Women Part 1 is ridiculous I kind of like the Edge of Seventeen sample on Bootylicious but the lyrics are so dumb Nasty Girl also gives a bit of whiplash with the puritanical tone following previously empowering lyrics and a track called Bootylicious. It feels all over the place and manufactured, trying to pander to two different crowds at once

Not much that I really liked here

There's no denying all three of them can sing, Beyonce kinda blowing the other two out of the water, but they can all hold a tune in what I assume is only a very lightly autotuned album, if at all. The issue with this is the the beats and lyrics are really dated. The whole style doesn't really hold up to modern RnB, or pop in general really. The instrumental kits sound like fisher price toys and everything is in this staccato half rapped style which just sounds too much like the early 2000's and nothing else. This went on for way too long and the only thing really keeping it from being a 1 is that the singing is more than capable. Even Kelly Rowland's excel spreadsheet texting application can't make her singing bad.

Did this album have 4 singles because they released another album quickly enough to move onto new singles or because this album only has 4 songs worth listening to? The hits land and were unavoidable at the time but the rest of this: yeesh. I'd give it 2.5 but am rounding down.

It drives me crazy when albums put the best songs right at the front, when they peak immediately and then the rest couldn't possibly be as good. That's what this does. This starts strong and then fades as it went, pretty steadily. I mean, you hit us with "Independent Women, Pt. 1," "Survivor," and "Bootylicious" right away. It's going to be downhill from there no matter what. That's not to say the three members of this trio aren't talented, they obviously are. The harmonies they produce here are at times stunning. Their voices individually are also beautiful. But when the second half of the album is a bunch of slower ballads that all sound kind of similar to each other, well... it's gonna get boring and repetitive pretty quickly. And then you end with a song that is so self-congratulatory and circle-jerky like the outro, and I just don't get why the album is structured this way. Like I dunno, maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't need to hear an entire track of the three members of the group talking each other up and thanking each other. I get that they want the listener to feel more emotionally invested with a track like that, but I don't care and never could. Sorry not sorry. This started great, faded steadily, and ended with a snooze. Two stars. Very disappointed. Standout Tracks: Survivor, Bootylicious

Nice voices

Know the radio hits, but can’t stand Beyoncé.

#612. So many of these 90's pop albums are so hard to get through. This shit is so cheesy, how is this stuff what everyone thought was good back then? 2/5: I think I wasn't ready for the jelly.

Starts out well enough -- but Nasty Girl brings that big record-scratch slut-shaming moment that takes the wind out of the sails of the rest of it, which is perfectly serviceable background R&B. Still pretty amazing that Beyonce is still cranking out hits 20+ years later, tho. But as for this one, well...there was much more interesting stuff in the neo-soul groove in the early oughts. Unexpected banger: Emotion -- they've got the right chops to do the BeeGee's proper.

It was a 3 until all the god stuff at the end. It’s either Bootylicious or it’s my buddy jesus. Hard to pull off both on the same album.

Good voices, but not my kinda music. It's funny how it's a lot of booty, and also a lot of praying.

This is too much pop for me. A bit more soul-vibes would have done this album good. But then the group wouldn't have been as popular.

Rating: 4/10 Nah. Choice cut: Survivor

This album is simply cheesy and does not stand the test of time. Most of the songs sound the same, and I found myself skipping several before they were done. This is another album I can’t quite understand why it is on this list.

I was floating between a 2 and a 3… I settled for a 2 because even though there’s a few catchy hits, at the end of the day, if someone asked me, “hey wanna listen to this album from beginning to end?” I would say no.

some highlights, but overly long and inconsistent. surprisingly dated.

5/10 Look, they got bangers. But way more fluff than they should have. TLC would never.

Couldnt finish it

All I can say is meh. Catchy, groovy, but nonetheless meh.

Not my jam

No, it's not offensive, and there is some soul in it, but it's also just a lot of showy pop fluff made to make a lot of money with silly lyrics and predictable song structures. I'd probably give it 2.5 stars, but I really can't give it 3.

Not my style

Terrible mawkish formulaic tripe

This is such a weird album. Like many other reviews before have said, it goes from celebrating female empowerment on one song to bashing and slut shaming women on the other (most clearly in Nasty Girl). The beats were okay but nothing to write home about. Moreover, this album is LONG. The first three songs are somewhat enjoyable but after that it just turns into repetitive and annoying slop.

This didn't need to be 71 minutes long.

yassss gurl

I don't there's anything directly "wrong" with this album or anything, but I don't think I care much for the way it approaches being "feminist" when its so shallow about it, or that the chill instrumentals do fall for some of the typical tropes of pop r&b in this era, or that it's an hour long when you could cut it down to 30 mins and be done. Beyonce stands out the most ofc but that might also come from the fact that I know her voice so much already so... yeah this one is a dud for me, not the worst thing ever but it edges too close to some of the stuff I've liked the least so far.

Survivor - Destiny's Child I was happy enough with giving a 3, until it got to the end and the committed one of my ultimate sins in music.. a song that's just a list of thank yous. That's what linear notes are for. It makes the song have no re-listen value and just annoys me more than it should 2/5

Not in my edition of the book! 2001. 2 stars. Starts of strong and fades badly into background music for ladies hairdressing salons. Great vocals, but far too long for what it is. It speaks volumes that the best track on it ("Bootylicious") is a straight rip of Stevie Nicks "Edge of Seventeen".

Kinda fun

picks: survivor, independent woman, nasty girl

Certainly an album that has music on it. It starts off relatively strong, by virtue of having all its hit singles up front, but the album gets worse and worse as it goes on. It's all servicable and enjoyable enough to keep it from a 1 star but there really isn't much to this album otherwise. I don't really care for Destiny's Child and this certainly didn't motivate me to look further into their music. The runtime is also a bit too long and the album overstays its welcome.

An album with 30 songwriters, 22 producers, 14 mixers, 22 engineers, 3 arrangers, 3 keyboardists, 4 guitarists, 4 stylists/make-up artists (!) and 1 vocal consultant. Don't get me wrong, none of these people did a bad job by any means (well, barring the lyrics for Nasty Girl perhaps). But boy, does it sound like none of them ever talked to each other about what they were actually creating for longer than approximately 30 seconds.

Pop Acts Stop Putting All Your Best Songs First Challenge: It can't be done. The opening four tracks are absolutely sensational, from a banger perspective, and then it's just some extremely 'will this do' work for the remaining 40 minutes? I mean, I do know why they do this, it's for money reasons, but don't they know that 24 years later some twee little Indie nerd will have to listen to this for a Project?

Absolutely needs to be on this list. But uh. I basically agree 100% with the top review it’s weirdly inconsistent in its message. Be sexually liberated but only in the way we find acceptable. Be independent and strong and also DESPERATELY want a man. Parts of this album sound like a million bucks and then others sound like a teenagers first demo. Weird.

Destiny's Child: "I'm a baddie with a sexy booty and you can't handle all this jelly" 😏 Also Destiny's Child: "Sluts are gross" 🤮

Survivor – Destiny's Child – 2/5 An old memory from childhood, but never really my style. It was hugely popular at the time, and I remember hearing it everywhere, though it didn’t leave a lasting impact on me.

Too religious

Sometimes it’s exactly what you expect. It felt like any other 2000s pop album with a few catchy radio songs among many filler tracks you will quickly forget. I struggled to get through the long runtime. It just was not for me.

noone survived.

This is a great example that just because something is popular, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's good. This was a rough listen. The first track sounds hilariously dated due to the Charlie's Angels tie in. You already know the first 3 tracks because they were played to death on the radio. If you expected the female empowerment to continue after those three you're going to be sorely disappointed. The next track is slut shaming, followed by another track hating women. Next they're simping over some guy. An album should be a coherent whole and this is all over the place. Add in that the backing tracks sound terrible when you focus on them rather than the voices. This isn't just something I didn't need to hear before I die, I never want to hear it again.

This is good for a song or two, but wears thin upon listening the whole way through. Favorite song was Survivor.

whatever

Not my jam, but I can see it being good

An incredibly front loaded album. Survivor is certainly an ubiquitous track from this era, but I don't think the rest of the album performs. I didn't hate it, but don't think this is a must listen *album* just for a few singles.

Destiny's Child set the stage for 2000s R&B. It's decent, but not my favorite album I've listened to. My main criticisms are that there isn't a clear throughline in the music and that there seems to be a lot of filler songs. Best Songs: Survivor, Bootylicious Worst Songs: Sexy Daddy, Independent Women Pt. II

oof, this aged way worse than i expected. besides some good pop production that definitely slaps, you really don't get anything great on this album. stylistically and theme-wise all over the place and just... so much weirder than i expected. 4/10

Glitzy, glamorous, and relatively boring to me. I don’t like early aughts R&B too much with the exception of D’Angelo. Standout track is: “Gospel Melody”

Found this to be an overproduced album. I don’t need yo hear any of this again.

Why is there an American pop album on my 1001 Britpop albums list? Is this thing broken? It's hard to ignore the cultural influence Destiny's Child (and the Spice Girls) had on pop in the early 2000's. However, unlike other major events in 2001, the world seems to have ultimately moved on from pop diva groups, and by consequence that makes this album feel extremely dated. Still, they managed to squeeze two unforgettable classics out of this thing, that's better than most popstars of the 90's-00's. Nothing in this album screamed out to me as jaw dropping or inherently original, though the first couple of songs are clear 2000's pop classics. I also feel Beyoncé is really carrying this album. There's plenty of gaps in production, and it's clear that Beyoncé was the glue for this group. That's probably why she's the only one who went onto superstardom post-breakup of Destiny's Child. Though, she did sell her soul to the Illuminati and feasts on juvenile adrenochrome to keep her youth, but I don't want talk about that bit. For self-preservation reasons. Overall, I think my sister would hang me from a tree if I gave this anything under a 3. So that's what it WAS going to get... UNTIL Gospel Melody. Minus 1 for that dreary abomination of a song, Jesus fucking Christ what an absolute slog of a song cunt. Listening to that song was like sour warheads in my mouth, and much like sour warheads, left me feeling a bitter taste for this album. There's few times I say this, but the CIA could very easily and effectively extract any secrets out of me by forcing me to listen to Gospel Melody. Strap me to a chair and play that shit on repeat, and by the second loop you'd break me. Fuck you, ladies. Apart from that, not bad, really. Enjoy your 2.

Destiny's Child spoke and thus, so began twenty plus years of hearing their music remixed in night clubs. Survivor and Bootylicious are bangers, evergreens that have entered the canon of nightlife music. Nasty Girl is fucking WILD to listen to. It is insane to have songs about female independence and empowerment and then have basically slut-shaming/internalised misogyny: the song FOLLOWING Bootylicious which was a hit back against the insane anorexic culture of the early 2000s after Beyonce had been attacked in the media for weight gain. Not to mention the story of SA that inspired The Story of Beauty, this album isn't just inconsistent in its theming, it's practically schizophrenic. Normally for this kind of album I would say "ah whatever, it's just trying to have a good time" a la my reviews for ZZ Top and Def Leppard but this is different. To have songs named Independent Women and Survivor which are so obviously about female empowerment makes this feel kinda gross. All that aside, I have always loathed production in early 2000s music, much like the period itself it is bawdy, bloated and tasteless. It's my own personal bias which I'll freely admit but prevents me from enjoying this album outside of the nostalgia factor of a select few songs on here. Outside of the big hits, I did not enjoy this. Highlight: Survivor, Bootylicious

I’d never listened to the full album before, but just as a side effect of having been alive in the early 2000s, I’ve heard most of it by osmosis. For the pure nostalgia value, it was nice; I don’t think I need to revisit it anytime soon, though. Aside from the hits, it felt like there was too much filler. 2.5

This isn’t my usual genre, but I gave it a fair shot. In short, the album starts strong but gradually loses momentum. It’s far too long, with too much filler weighing it down. Favorite song: The opening trio—Independent Women, Survivor, and Bootylicious—are the undeniable hits. Great pop tracks! Least favorite: Everything from track 4 onward, with Nasty standing out as one of the weakest. Album artwork: A cool cover, at least!

I can't imagine kicking off an album with 3 solid bangers that never get old, then having the rest of the album plod through with nothing of substance at all.

The only way I’d ever listen to this album would be because of this exercise. Tough listen. And that’s all I’m going to write about this one.

All the songs sound the same. The girls are talented singers. The songs kinda suck tho.

The unnecessary runs always make me laugh

- why -

In retrospect, Destiny's Child really seems like it was also the launching pad for Beyonce's career. It feels obvious as her father managed the band around a revolving door of group members, often with pretty bad blood between them. But really, this was the album that Beyonce first shined on, producing and writing most of the tracks. And arguably, it contains some of the most famous songs, including "Survivor" and "Bootylicious". All of the hits are tacked on right at the beginning. The singles were catchy and popular, and generally focused on women's empowerment and redefining beauty standards. That's really what makes the fourth track "Nasty Girl" particularly hard to listen to. The music is fine, but the slut shaming really undermines the message of the rest of the album and is a low point here. The rest of the album was an unknown to me going in. I expected a lot of filler, but there actually are some decent tracks throughout, particularly in the middle of the album. "Apple Pie a la Mode" and "Happy Face" stand out to me as good pop songs with a slight avant garde edge to them, though I suspect that they're generally skipped. The album ends with more ballady songs, which don't do much for me. Overall, "Survivor" has some serious flaws but just about works as a good pop album. It feels a bit harsh, but I think "Nasty Girl" knocks this down a point.

If you like this kind of music, it’s probably good. I don’t like this style of music.

I feel like this album is rated so low on this website because a lot of people using this album are using it to get away from music like this. Not to say this album is terrible but it's just not my taste in music. I don't get why so many people love Beyonce because from my perspective everything she's done is just mediocre. Am I biased because I hate the 2019 Lion King, of course, but this album is still not that good otherwise. It's too much pop and not much else which is not what I like in music.

Suprisingly interesting - but Beyonce..

Harmonizing cry-singing is the black soul equivalent to white guitar solos. Apart from this annoyance the first 3-4 Songs set the tone. Most of the following tracks sound like generic Justin Timberlake. Extra Point for the nice re-use of tunes from e.g. Salt’‘n’Peppa on „Nasty Girl“

Some bangers up front. Pretty weak otherwise, lyrically poor

Smooth R&B album from the group, some good singles that stood out. Not entirely my style but enjoyable and smooth.

As sacrilegious as some may find it, I’ve never been the biggest Beyoncé fan. This extends to Destiny’s Child too. It’s all the diva warbling that I’ve never really been able to get behind. This album was catchy and interesting in parts, but the overuse of vocal runs did leave me a bit bored. I get it, she’s a really good singer. But good singing does not a great album make. The first three tracks are the better ones of the album with the rest being a bit forgettable. Not my cup of tea. Sorry!

The singles are good, the rest is filler

Of its time.

Eh, not their best work

Destiny's Child has a couple songs that I'd call classics of their era of R&B. none of them are on this album. I can appreciate that this is an attempt at a pro-female, pro-empowerment statement from the group, but it feels extremely self-centered in ways that undercut that message. especially odious in this respect is "Nasty Girl" which, with its central lyrical theme essentially just being pick-me slut-shaming, basically invalidates this as a feminist record. plus, I hardly feel any group cohesion between these three women; this is basically a Beyoncé album with some contributions from two other singers who might as well be anonymous, given how subservient their contributions feel. "I'm a survivor", in many other contexts, would be a powerful statement, but then you remember that all Beyoncé's talking about surviving is a few lineup changes, something that almost every band goes through at some point. her vocal antics on many of these songs are legitimately in that Christina Aguilera tier of obnoxious (weirdly on brand with her current-day self-centered girlboss billionaire politics), and they feel so unearned given how little these songs have going for them compositionally and sonically. this is extremely plain R&B that's as deep as a puddle and sounding more and more anachronistic as time goes on. strong 4/10.

Not my thing

Well, a second day of 2000's female R&B. It is the second day of an album which is more modern (for this list) that feels just "fine" to me. The first song has a lot of Charlie's Angels references which does place me directly back in the early 2000's. I can feel the constraints being in this group put on Beyonce and it feels like the "I can live without you" songs are not just directed at men. Survivor does have a great keyboard riff on it, though I could have gone without the last 8 seconds of the song which are not played on radio, mostly because it is cheesy and needless. I find it interesting that Beyonce's first solo album was named after a song on this album that she also put on her first solo album (Dangerously in Love). Nasty Girl is a pretty misogynistic song if you ask me. Had a man performed it then I would imagine a great deal of controversy would have erupted. I can see why Back to Basics is on the list, as Christina Aguilera made a change to her sound and expanded her horizons creatively. I am a bit more confused as to why this album made the list. It's not even critically considered Destiny's Child's best album and critics just seemed to be "meh, it sold a lot of records" about it. It feels like the justification for inclusion is the number of records it sold but I don't think this album is in the same league as other R&B albums released during this time. This book struggles more with the inclusion of modern music. I don't know why Happy Face is on this album. It's very basic and should have been on the cutting room floor. When I thought the song was petering out, I looked and it had 2 more minutes. That's one minutes of moaning/screaming and the chorus being repeated over and over and over and over and over and over...followed by "I'm flying!" for another minute. It's a disqualifying song just on its own. I don't know what the purpose of the Gospel Medley is and the Outro is just the group thanking each other. There is, yet again, no reason to include this song. I can't imagine any person who listened to this album more than a few times ever listened to these last two songs. This isn't their best album and shouldn't be in the book.

They are very talented, but I think Destiny’s Child is a “greatest hits only” kind of band for me.

The first two songs have held up surprisingly well. After that....eh. 2/5

Girl group.

I was kind of disappointed, to be honest, I hadn't heard this record, but I had heard of this record, and it really didn't do much for me.

Sounds like a parody

This one just didn’t click for me. Basic and boring R&B backing tracks with uninteresting melodies. At least there are a couple of cool samples.

Starts with a hell of a 3 punch - Independent Women into Survivor into (especially) Bootylicious But then it just doesn’t really go anywhere, the tunes disappear, and there’s this really weird production choice that has the girls singing over the top of each other in such a way that you can’t hear them properly. A disappointment
