Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Again another album of its time and somewhat nostalgic. But I listened to it once all the way through and forgot I did so. Jackie was fine
I haven’t heard this before. Walker has a good voice and the arrangements he’s singing to are complex and interesting, but this all boils down to dull crooning that doesn’t move me in the end. This is good in theory, maybe it’s the melodies that are boring or I just can’t get into mid to late 60s crooning.
This wasn’t it. Walker had a remarkable voice and the album has a couple of intriguing songs, but all of them are Jacques Brel covers
Not my style
Meh
some shit brian from family guy would sing
Scotty no.
Overall: 4/10 I'm usually a fan of strange music, but this was something I have absolutely zero interest in ever hearing again. His voice isn't bad but the songs just aren't there. Fav Song: Plastic Palace People
This was kind of pleasant and cozy, but I was so uninterested
Too baroque for me. Had its moments but overall I wanted more of the folky stuff and less of the soaring symphonic numbers.
theatre kid orchestral pop has not aged well, methinks.
Why would I listen to this when I can listen to a real crooner? I thought this was a joke when I heard the lyrics.
I like his voice but got sick of it a few songs in. Pretty boring album with a lot of opera type vocals. Was hoping for more of Sinatra or Dean Martin type of sound but it failed to deliver
Das war doch schon 1968 altmodisch, oder?
OK, this isn't a bad album. It's just perhaps a little much having the whole thing in this chanteuse style. I don't want to say 'oh it's not for me' but I do think a few songs to dabble in is probably best. I was also pretty relieved when it was over.
i can imagine someone using one of these songs really effectively on a TV soundtrack, but dear god do i not want to listen to it again. It gets a two because i think his physical vocal delivery is actually pretty nice
Ist nett - aber auch nicht mehr. Gut arrangiert mit Orchester, die Stimme angenehm. Richtig mitgenommen hat es mich nicht. 2/5
I had never heard his music before it was interesting but would probably not dig in again
Best Song: Jackie. He's really good at evoking that spaghetti western feel. Worst Song: Next. Jesus these lyrics were weak as hell. Overall: A lot of cheesy songs here, made to sound all the more cheesy due to his manner of singing. Everything sounds overtly theatrical and the lyrics here are far less compelling than for the other Scott Walker album I've listened to on this list.
So here's where I admit that I only know of Scott Walker's existence from his being mentioned in a Black Country, New Road song. The songs I liked best on here were the Jacques Brel covers. They're great songs; I know one or two of them from my parents' copy of "Jacques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris." But these versions don't feel quite right; they're like an easy listening version of those songs. The rest of this continues along those lines: smooth and a little wink-wink decadent. Objectively good for the genre I guess but a slog for me - 2 stars
too theatrical for me
Não gostei
Scholocky and enjoyable, like Neil Diamond had a lobotomy. 2.5 rounding down
mmm non il mio genere
This one is odd. He has a good voice (and in my opinion, he has better material) but the old-timey instrumentals put me to sleep. The lyrics are odd for this type of music too, which is a plus
All I could think is why not Scott walker 4… but apparently that’s also coming. In no world can I imagine justifying TWO of this guys albums. But I’m glad to know of him.
Having already reviewed "Scott 4", I was braced for the worst when "Scott 2" came up. I will never be a Scott Walker fan but I have to admit that the album's only single "Jackie" isn't half bad. The rest is (at best) very mediocre chamber pop - standard oldies. Nice-ish but no, not for me. At least, this is not as hilarious as "Scott 4".
I want to like Pavement but I just can’t get into them.
Uh todo bien con Scott pero se me hizo infumable a la mitad
Holy shit! “Black Sheep Boy” by Okkervil River is a cover?! And it’s not even by this croony ass motherfucker, it’s by the guy who wrote “Reason to Believe”?! Did everyone else already know this?! Why was I not informed?! That is a lot of interrobangs in a row. This kind of sucked. But check out the 2005 album “Black Sheep Boy” by Okkervil River. It’s great.
Not for me
This was an interesting listening experience! I feel like I enjoyed this album fine even though it’s not typically my jam and what I normally listen to. The songs seemed very theatrical and performative which was entertaining at least. I felt like Walker’s sing talking worked for this genre of music and the vibe he was going for. Ultimately, this album was interesting and a little boring at times to me but I enjoyed listening to something new. I’m not sure if I would give it a relisten though!
Probably the worst version of Next I've ever heard. The rest is also pretty universally bad, overblown, ponderous, boring. Jackie was half decent though, so I'm going with two stars.
2,5/5
This would be great if I was watching a musical. But I am not, and it’s just very odd. 2.5
3.0/10 Didn’t like this at all… his style of singing drove me nuts
Dette er jo bare sviskesanger? Gi meg "Charley Bop" nå!
Goofy ass theatrical singing. Reminds me of the kind of musical singing style that I hate. And the songs are all covers too, so I can't even give credit for originality. All skips.
Some of the better tracks gave me mediocre James Bond film music, the worst gave me icky slimy uncle vibes.. not for me thanks
I’ve seen so many artists cite Scott Walker over the years. I don’t get it. I kept thinking I was missing something, so I listened to the album about 6 times over several weeks and in different music moods. I didn’t help. Not all music is for everyone. All the same, I can certainly see why the book editors included Walker in the mix given his lost-lasting influence on music that followed. His music just isn’t for me.
Too much for me
Pffft, goed gemaakt, maar niet te dien
Scott Walker is another artist I've heard of but haven't really listened to. And hearing these songs, I'm not sure I needed to. Schmaltzy Vegas music.
Entertaining
Who knew? A cut rate Neil Diamond exists! My wife, who loves Neil diamond, might be excited. I’m not so much.
I don’t know what I expected but it certainly wasn’t that.
This was a wild ride, likely not one I’ll repeat. Pretty amusing though
Comedy
A year before Led Zeppelin invented Roman numerals, Scott Walker finally answered the question, “Can vibrato induce vertigo?” The verdict: a resounding “Yẽẽẽẽẽs!”
I was previously familiar with Scott Walker because a different one of his albums had come up earlier in this exercise. This music is sort of lounge music with country/Bakersfield influences. It's not really my cup of tea. I won't listen to this again.
this sounds like a middle school theater director who puts on a one man revue for his students - sorry really did not like this !!!!! Only gets a 2 bc I already like black sheep boy
This a strange album. Think of 40's crooners singing Zappa.
This style is not for me.
Didn’t grab me. Black Sheep Boy is good, but his singing takes me out of most songs. Scott 3 is good and the avant garde 80s stuff sounds interesting, but this one doesn’t do it for me.
This record confused me. Great voice, just...misplaced.
30 years too late getting to this, would have loved it in my Loungecore days, much less so now....
It’s like I’ve accidentally tuned into Elaine Paige on BBC radio two during the Sunday afternoon show songs program. That is not a good thing. It’s almost wonderful, but ends up being painfully camp. Great voice though!
just kinda nonsensical
Listening
Not sure who this is for. The over orchestrated and overproduced stuff, I just don't care about it. It's not any different from MacArthur Park to me
By the time this album was finished, I found that I was sitting in a smoky Las Vegas ballroom and I'd eaten half a prime rib.
Such a samey album. The orchestral pop sound is fine, but it’s essentially that for 40 minutes or so. Not especially interesting.
He can sing but this sounds like an album of song parodies.
Another Anthony Newley...
so dramatic Will I listen to again: 0%
I feel like I mightve enjoyed this more if he was singing at a live musical or something, but just not very enjoyable through headphones. Wouldn't listen to again
The lyrics of this were the fly in an otherwise perfectly good soup. I know this is from the 60s but yeah... it's really showing its age... Barely got 1 minute in before he's talking about becoming 'a procurer of young girls'. Safe to say that put me off immediately.
No. The lyrics suck and so does the bizarre theatrical style.
I think i dont get it
Zany show tunes, rhymes like a bafoon, better in small doses, as he may have a neurosis. Scott 2 was totally new (to me) and comes in at (2.3*s) Are we done with Scott, I think not…
So I was kinda digging this as a more contemporary Sinatra but then I read that it's mostly covers...wuh-wuh. The lack of originality brings it down for sure. "Jackie" is top track with a few other odes to the whores that aren't bad. Did Scott serve in Vietnam and frequent the said brothels he refers to? The early songs on the album are triumphant and flow out through that wall of sound. By the end though, we get a bunch of slow boys and it whimpers away. I'm interested in some more from Walker as long as they are his own works. 1.94 stars rounds up to a 2 for 2.
Can't say I enjoyed this Scott Walker album beyond the initial few minutes. A couple upbeat songs that sound like a mashup of showtunes, tv theme songs, and an entry level lounge act. Then it devolves to a less and less interesting slowed down version as the album continues. I guess that describes baroque pop for the most part? Not sure who is listening to this but it looks like Scott Walker had a decently prolific career in the wake of this album. He must have continued to move units and do what he loved for some sort of fanbase. I've never heard of him previously and not sure I need to hear from him again but there is definitely worse options from this list. As it is stands this was a mostly lackluster album after any initial excitement wears off. 1.81 stars
🎧This does very little for me
Reminds me of when Dana Carvey or Martin Short used to sing showtunes on SNL.
According to the man himself this was "the work of a lazy, self-indulgent man". I can't disagree. The Next cover has neither the depth of the original Jacques Brel version, nor the flamboyant theatricality of the Sensation Alex Harvey Band's rendition. His later work e.g. The Old Man's Back Again and The Electrician had some social and political teeth, this cover seems like a missed opportunity, or maybe it was just too subtle for me.
Walker is a contemporary of Brel (and actually covered some of his songs on this album) and similar in style, although a little less dramatic and way less... French. I liked some songs, but it wasn't as transportive as Brel's album. Maybe it's actually being able to understand the lyrics, maybe Walker's voice isn't quite as expressive and dynamic, or maybe it's just not as interesting. - Heard before? No. I'd actually never heard of Scott Walker the musician - Will I listen again? No. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? No. Notable songs: Black Sheep Boy, only because it made me realize that this wasn't an Okkervil River song. (It's not Walker's either.)
Meh
I don't think I understand what this is.
Lyrically, what the fuck did I just listen to?
Wild
Feels like the best and the worst of the 1960s in a blender. Overly theatrical voice, schmaltzy arrangements. At best, tracks are like mediocre Bond theme songs ('Best of Both Worlds') or unconvincing country pastiche ('Black Sheep Boy'). While the music is cheesy and cliched, the lyrics are often strange and unfiltered ('Next'). Weirdly honest, yet highly artificial. 2.5⭐️
Well, I'd never heard of the man nor this record, and now I know why. Crooners are not my thing, and although it's not as cheesy as Frank Sinatra or even worse Roger Whittaker (still have nightmares from the records my mom played), the baroque and pastiche sound, and the misogynistic lyrics, didn't age well either. He does get one more star for covering Jacques Brel, and for his own weird lyrics, giving this album a slightly less "crooner feel". 2/5
An album that feels like an eclectic mix - part cover album, part original, mostly ick and a product of its time.
What an introduction to an album and what a great voice! While the voice stays great the album unfortunately falls of quite fast. The first song being the absolute best to me. Then the album slowly lost me until song five woke me up again. Then back to sleep but with a great ending. It was a fun experience listening through this but its not something I will come back to any time soon.

Guter Song von einem anderen Album: https://open.spotify.com/track/1RJkO4wNDYEuniXzg6WzA1?si=BmUovKJYTRSrXBuTEQVXaw
I really don’t get the whole Scott Walker thing. He has this overly theatrical crooner schtick that sounds like it takes itself far too seriously. If he lightened up a bit, it might be more fun. While obviously it’s a very rich and well-crafted musical experience, I find myself just wanting it to be over.
Scott 2 is a bizarre. It’s big, orchestral pop, for a lack of a better word. He’s almost a crooner. He’s dark and sad but sometimes over the top and funny, like the opener Jackie, which I was sad to learn is a cover. Interesting but not for me 5.8/10
Some very interesting songs on this album.
Overblown crooner drama dialled up to “pub singer with delusions of grandeur.” A lot of it is hammy as anything, but “Jackie” is a riot — theatrical, cheeky, and easily the highlight. Scott 2 gets 2!
A couple interesting songs but not enough for me to care much. 2 stars or D+.
Ok, pretty boring. 2/5
The OG flødekaramel. Tænk sig at det her er samtidig med Sgt. Peppers, Hendrix, The Doors osv.
Une simple compilation de titres plus mou les uns que les autres. Pas assez de prise de risque
He feels like Christmas music but boring. I wanted to get immersed but never really could. Maybe it was my environment or mood but did nothing for me. Cool variety of instrumentations though
I think the arrangement is pleasant enough, but I don't really get Scott's sense of humor. Not exactly a chore to listen to, but the times where my brain was really engaged were few and far between.
Too theatrical for me. Again, I can appreciate it, but it is not for me.
It's unique, but it's a bit too much for me. Something about this made me irritated.
I recoiled pretty quickly when the first song started. Gave it another song and some of the stuff is kind of interesting. Scott's voice is legit good. The music isn't my thing but I'm sort of compelled to keep listening for some reason. Some weird lyrical content. "Next" is another real bad one. Not my style, but oddly compelling.
It sounds like Frank Sinatra, and yet it doesn’t. Everything feels epic, but somehow it isn’t. I found myself physically tired just from listening to it. I genuinely felt exhausted. I’m not sure if it’s good or bad. It’s not a 2, not a 4, and not even a 3. But since I can’t say I explicitly liked it, I’m giving it a 2. This isn’t a great explanation, but it’s the most honest evaluation I can make right now.
Very 60s, very crooner
Overproduced music that doesn't gel with its risqué lyrics and Scott's operatic vocals. "Next" is sus 🤨. (2.5)
Bargain bin Sinatra sings a bunch of pleasant but bland songs
I don't know it's just not my thing some strange stuff in here
Sounded good but the lyrics are questionable
moeilijk geval... goed voor één liedje maar niet voor hele plaat... te bombastische stem
2.08
On Scott 2, when he's not doing some up-tempo Broadway-pop crossover cover backed by a cartoon orchestra he's delivering a weird late-night boozy impression of Sinatra hanging out in Regent's park on a UK vacation. Sloshing between these two ends of the spectrum this album is similarly caught between two and three stars.
Interesting but not good
It sounds like a bad musical. His voice is ok, but the compositions were generic and that's all. Why do I need some more music from the 60s that sounds like the other albums from the 60s?
Well, I liked the first couple songs because I though they had a cool, older sound to them, while the lyrics sounded much more modern, but by the end of the album I was just kinda tired of the old-fashioned sound. I might have liked it better if the song order was reversed or something. It just sounded old and tired without any musically redeeming qualities that I could find. It was alright, but I won't be listening to it again. Two stars.
Very dramatic. Walker's voice suits the style well and is very emotive. I like the orchestral backing arrangements. But this kind of music just sort of does nothing for me, generally speaking
Not my bag , baby! British baroque lounge pop, I don't know just can't get into it
fine, not the worst
Wow. I am not sure I expected this, sort of like a lounge singer with a sense of humor. Glad I got the experience, but probably will not be revisiting.
This album is mostly inoffensive 60s crooner pop at first glance. However, a closer listen reveals some unusual lyrics that most crooners of the era wouldn't touch. However, this doesn't set the album apart sonically. It's not terrible, but it doesn't really do anything for me. I wouldn't call this essential listening especially when it's mostly covers.
So dramatic and pretty dated.
Was this album recorded onto tape or shoveled onto it? Overwrought and overproduced pop with overused jags of sing-talking-shouting. I am still not entirely sure this wasn't a parody. Good voice, though. Jackie was fun. 2/5
Orchestra pop, Tom jones Jackie
Scott Walker, I barely know her. Not bad but not my thing
Undoubtedly an incredible voice but his songs feel more like he’s telling a story than making a song. Great for some but not for me.
Guy has a serious voice. But very dated.
Start of the album was better than the end, could listen for a short while
Not really my thing
Nope
Rating: 4/10 Songs are fine and well made enough I guess but weird and not my thing, and I don’t want to spend my time listening to this
NO clue what the album was about but interesting sound 4.4/10
I genuinely have no idea what to make of this one. It feels witty... Is it supposed to be satire? Comedy? Real commentary? Is this taking itself seriously, or not? And should I? I just can't tell. It's bizarre, it's a little avant garde, and yet the music itself is quite good. His voice in particular is really solid. I find myself less loving or hating this, and more just bewildered. As is often the case though, it's not bad. I don't dislike it, I just don't feel I understand it. There are some unfortunate dated lyrics here, but I'm usually willing to overlook that as being just a product of its time. Only because I don't understand it, I'm giving it a 2. If I manage to work out what the point of this is and what it's trying to be, it may get bumped up a little higher.
Why is this song about the artist losing their virginity in an army brothel so familiar? Feel like I've heard this one before. Wait, is it a Jacques Brel cover? -Real thoughts I had while listening to this album.
Yeah nope
Wasn’t my sort of thing
I'm not sure what to say about this album. It's show tuney, without being an album of show tune covers. He's got a nice voice.
This guy slaps… ass.
I know this guy has a cult following but it’s not for me. I don’t get the hype. What makes this guy different from say Tom Jones? Lyrical content? It’s still cheesy music even if the songs are darker or whatever.
The music is stupid and the lyrics are ridiculous. What's not to like? Next!
I'd never heard of him before; he seems like an interesting guy--I wonder if this is the best album to represent him? Great voice but I didn't like his interpretations or song choices very much.
Weird energy-elevator music
I liked the energy at the start, but... I dunno. This one gives me weird vibes. The orchestral backing is great but the audio on the vocals feels detached in a distracting way. On top of that, the lyrics feel dated in places. 2 stars for Scott 2.

Kind of a funny album, the dude is a little funny too after reading about him. Pop sensation that kind of sounds like a shitty Barry Manilow. I'm probably not giving it enough credit. Also weirdly sounds like a Christmas album sometimes. Huh. Kind of forgettable, sounds like Scott 3 and 4 are a little more fun.
• 2/5 • Nobody needed translated covers of Jacques Brel songs . . . Next!
Meh, it's ok I guess.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzyawnzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz2.0zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Entertaining, but I lean more Scott 3 and 4.
I get it ,subverting the crooner archetype, but still don't like it 2*
2 Oh God, this dude again. Scott 1 and Scott 3 seem all but inevitable from here. I have the exact same feelings towards this album that I did Scott 4, though I think the man himself summarized it best by retroactively calling this “the work of a lazy, self-indulgent man." At least the guy had some self-awareness. Okay, “lazy” feels a bit harsh considering he put out like six albums over the course of four years (six more than I can say I have to my name), but this consists mostly of covers and reeks of self-indulgence. Scott’s an impressive singer and none of the songs are bad per se, but the overdramatic nature is incredibly off-putting to me. Sinatra could probably pull this kind of thing off and make it cool, but it’s just not working for me here - it feels like this guy’s whole solo catalog is an attempt at breaking away from his teen pop icon status by showcasing how complex and deep his musicality is, and there’s just something sort of artificial about it to me. I guess there’s a novelty to hearing an album from 1968 say things like “stupid-ass”, “slapping asses”, and “gonorrhea”, but that’s just chalked up to covering a French-Belgian songwriter - and that charm is very quickly gone once he starts throwing slurs around. The guy is talented, but this just isn’t my kind of thing at all. That said, look out for Luke 1, coming to a store near you this holiday season. And while you’re at it, you can go ahead and pre-order Luke 2 through 8 as well. Look for my face on the cover looking all moody.
In the 70's on Saturday Night Live, Bil Murray did a great bit about a lounge singer who was completely non-self-aware, the cheesiness dipping off him ************************* like a plate of bad nachos at the ballpark 🥸 ************************* I forced myself to listen to Scott2 all the way through, and I had Iron Maiden queued up to go afterward. Kind of forgot about that, but the contrast between Scott's "Come Next Spring" and Maiden's "Prowler" could substitute for a defibrillator.
I think this just isn’t for me
It was certainly entertaining, I thought I was in a musical the whole time.
disappointing tbh. but i liked black sheep boy
A bit too old-fashioned and bombastic for my taste.
Strange mix of styles? The Jacques Brel inspiration is evident but somehow this is like if Jacques Brel did dirty Disney songs. Some of it is interesting I guess but not my thing.
Sorry iscott'a be walker away from this
great voice but this was hard for me to get through
Ok
I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve never heard of this dude. The instinct is to classify it, which I guess is crooner parody, maybe, but that also insults it, because it’s not musically composed to be written off as a joke. Vastly different sounds, but it reminds me of Frank Zappa, in the way that it’s smarter than it comes across. But at the end of the day, this isn’t making it into my collection.
Eh
Hmm. Mildly interesting groove and he’s definitely got style. But at the end of the day it’s a confection, like eating some cotton candy.
unohdettava
I tried but not really my tempo
Cinematic songs, great voice, but very dated lyrics. Nothing particularly memorable.
I felt like I was listening to the soundtrack of a mocku-biopic of Barry Manillow staring 1970s Martin Short.
A 60s crooner who just doesn’t work for me
It was okay but definitely not my cup of tea
Not a fan. I can appreciate that the lyrics and the style are... unique. Some of the musical backing sounds epic and like it belongs in a Bond movie, and I did actually appreciate one song called The Bridge. But overall, the vocals felt overwrought and the whole thing felt kind of manic. When the song 'Next' came on, all I could think of was, well, 'Next!'
Yuck, sounds like Tom Jones attempting rock. 2/5
Theatrical pop album with an orchestral sound, but I didn't find any of the songs very exciting or interesting.
2.5 - Meh
The listener is greeted by a not-too-deep baritone, which is backed by orchestra with soulful horns and seductive guitar, creating something pompous and theatrical making this some Baroque Pop.
Well, it’s different certainly. To much cheese for me really, and lyrically weird. What’s with all the slapping of arses? Not my thing. It’s the sort of tripe that Top of the Pops producers insisted on putting on the programme when the charts were full of really cool bands with a proper lasting legacy. When you see those episodes now it just seems a bizarre set of choices. One listen was enough.
Soul, 1968 -> 2
That was OK I guess - not sure if he's trying to be Frank Sinatra, but he does a decent job of it. I'll say 2.5 - round down.
Scott 1 was better
What a strange album… He has a Tom Jones type of voice but has a song about how dogs are better than women. His voice sounded good but huh?
Scott Walker: Scott 2: What happened to Scott 1 and 3? At least I have found 2. Too bad this shit is boring as fuck. There really isn't anything interesting about this album. Yeah, this sure is music I guess. I don't know what to say, I didn't like it and I will forget this very soon. Scott Walker is NOT it! 4/10
I don't know. Meh.
meh 2/5 sounds like christmas. like his voice tho
I really don’t like The Divine Comedy and therefore I don’t like this as this is clearly where they got their influence. In fact it’s not even an influence, the music, the lyrics and the tone of his singing is basically identical. Anyway. This was not that much of a fun listen.
One Scott walker is enough.
Okay music, but a good deal of misogyny
Not really anything here I'm interested in. This is clearly made for someone else's ears.
Lite rolig kanske men inte min typ av musik.
I have no idea how this easy-listening dude got not one but TWO albums on this list. It is vaguely amusing that he is a crooner singing about depressing things like getting gonorrhea. Maybe that’s the “edginess” that makes primer like him? After listening to it a few times In willing to give him an extra star for the lyrics.
Not my type but gentle music
1/5
Easy to see why this album is so divisive. Some decent songs, but for me there for were misses than hits.
I gotta be honest, was not expecting the line "I swear on the wet head of my first case of gonorrhoea" to be crooned at me, that really came out of left field. This man goes on to sing more about underwear and stuff. Honestly, not my cup of tea but I can totally see any of these songs being used in old films from the 50s.
It harkens to the 70s lounge singer.
zzzzmimimi
You know this guy spent a little too much time listening to the old standards and smelling his own farts.
Some good songs here, but i probably wouldn’t listen to again tbh
I like Scott's voice a lot, but this album is just kind of boring in comparison to #3 and #4. Sounds very dated, whereas the others had a bit of experimentation, and better, more original songwriting.
Essentially the same song twelve times. I didn’t like the song.
I’m not sure anybody needs to be singing about setting themselves on fire courting their own legs off The actual songs and tunes themselves weren’t offensive but every song identical and lyrics complete madness
I did not enjoy this. I do not usually pay attention to lyrics, and apparently Scott Walker is known for his poetic lyrics, but the first things I pay attention to are melody, the music itself, and then the lyrics, but I listen to a lot of music in foreign languages so maybe I've trained myself to think of them as secondary. But regardless, I would have to listen to this again and deliberately pay attention to the lyrics if those are the important parts, because the music and melodies did nothing for me, so it would be difficult for me to want to play this again. I've heard that his later work is much more experimental and weirder, which is more interesting to me, so perhaps I'd appreciate those works more than this.
Everything going okay, kinda getting into the groove, then plays "Next" ... makes awkward face and sheepishly ends the album ...
Cinematic crooning with a big orchestral sound, luckily some good warm horns to balance the cheesy strings.so it doesn't get too schmaltzy. Great baritone voice and an impressive performance, but it's pretty boring - drama without fun.
Very 60’s only recognised “only an hour” reminds me of cheesy Eurovision songs and creepy Cliff Richard. Not for me!
eh, the instruments are good, but mans needs to lay off the vibrato. His voice was grating for me. Sounded like a theatre kid. Next is good, though.
2.5 -ok
Big voice. Fills a room, demands attention. Just not in my house.
2 stars. Far too cheesy and corny.
grand but not good
extremely okay
*Like an off broadway musical - fun and different, but wouldn’t revisit. RATING - 5.5/10
Stupid ass
Kitschy late 60s club music. Cheesy ballad type singing. Did not listen after track 3
This was pompous and not very good. Didn’t like this. Decent voice but no reason to listen again.
3/10
Scott 2 walks a line between grandiose crooner drama and European chanson melancholy. Walker’s voice is undeniably powerful and technically impressive, but for me, it lacks edge. There’s a glossy, almost Vegas-like quality to it that makes it hard to fully connect with. Despite the lush orchestration and some thoughtful lyrics, the album becomes somewhat trivial over time. It all blends into a beautifully arranged melancholy that, while polished, feels emotionally distant. I can understand the appeal – but I don’t feel it. An interesting time capsule, but not a record I’ll be returning to. 2/5
Cover: 1. 1. No. This list really leans to only a certain type of person. Not at all open to other forms of music except here and there. 2. Ok song. I'm not the target audience for this list though. 3. There really are albums I like, like Blue, Joni Mitchell. Or Grace, Jeff Buckley. James Taylor. Etc. Why am I only getting this crap? I absolutely don't need to have listened to these befor dying. 4. Puff Puff Pass. 5. Next. 6. Is music stupid? 7. Well is it? Is it dumb, dum dum boink or no? 8. No. It's not. But yes. Blegh. 9. What happened in the 60s that this was done to humanity? No war? Was that the problem? 10. No. I'm out of the mood. I rather listen to backstreet boys. 11. So impatient. Might have to quit this damn list. 12 Yell you children to make a new edition of this book. .
Wow-so awful
Can definitely hear how it influenced Bowie and many others. But the music and overall presentation isn't my thing and the subject matter is quite dated. Pass.
Some entertainment to be found in some of the lyrics but the delivery wasn't great and I struggle to see the point of this really.
Crooner croons covers.
Opening track is fun, the rest heads straight to yawnville, next!
Arrangements were nice, but I’m not big on crooning.
I don't have the faintest clue what this is. Doesn't exactly read as inspiring, but I don't have any good reasons to be negative about it. Could always be a hidden gem. Jackie I don't know what I expected, but it was not this. The instrumental sounds kinda flat. It's different at least. Kinda dislike the lyrics. The vocal style feels kinda manufactured. Average. 2.5/5 Best Of Both Worlds Intensly boring. He's a fairly talented singer, but lacks any personality or charm. Generic 60s crooing with an overbearing instrumental. Strongly dislike. 1.5/5 Black Sheep Boy I appreciate the guitar. I don't understand why they felt the need to insert strings here, feels completely hamfisted and unecessesary. Lacks subtelty. Still hate the vocals. Did not like. 2/5 The Amorous Humphrey Plugg Clunky. Hard to get invested in. Tells of an idealized lifestyle that's difficult to relate to. Instrumentally it feels pretty much thr same as the first few tracks, really samey. Did not like. 2/5 Next The theatrical nature of the track is kinda compelling. The more spoken word style is pretty cool at times. Awful lyrics at points. Has some haunting qualities to it. Fine. 3/5 The Girls From The Streets Approaching self parody territory with the vocals. There's some pretty alright writing here. The lyrics have some effective imagery here and there and the instrumental has a bit of variety to it which is a huge improvement from the last few tracks. Generally kinda boring though. Average. 2.5/5 Plastic Palace People Inoffensive. Still dislike the vocal style. The lyrics are somewhat interesting, though I am confused to what is actually happening. The effect on the vocals don't give the intended vibe, just makes him sound creepy. Instrumentally it gets chaotic at times, but never really strays away from the album's formula. Average. 2.5/5 Wait Until Dark Forgettable. Can't say there's anything here that stands out. Did not like. 2/5 The Girls And The Dogs Annoying rhyme scheme. Annoying lyrics. Annoying concept. Torture chamber circus music. Awful. 1/5 Windows Of The World I guess it's pleasant at least. Insanely cliche. Bores me to sleep. Did not like. 2/5 The Bridge It's too much. Feels like a repeat. Lacks any personality or differentiating factor. Did not like. 2/5 Come Next Spring An absolutely nothing song to end off an absolutely nothing album. Got nothing to say. Did not like. 2/5 A slog to get through. Don't understand the appeal at all. Incredibly boring to the point where I'm struggling to find anything to talk about. I guess there's something to be said about his voice which is objectively pretty alright, though I still don't like the vocal style so it doesn't really help. There's very little here that's outright bad though, it rarely strays into unpleasant territory musically, though the lyrics can have a tendency to worsen the experience with dated language and strange expressions. Don't have much more to say. Would rather just forget this exists. 2/5
ähm, etwas langsamer und gemütlicher. und viel streicher, kuschelig und alles in allem nicht gut gealtert. sorry.
What an album! If you like 60s crooner pop music with bizarre lyrics, then this is right up your alley.
Boring rubish
Not for me
Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 😱🙀🙈 Production: 📼🎙️🕰️ Music: 🎻🌑📖 Rating: 🎞️🎞️/5
A bit slow
Not at all my thing
It’s better on a second listen, but this is an album you need to be in the mood for. ‘The Amorous Humphrey Plugg’, ‘Plastic Palace People’ and ‘Wait Until Dark’ are the most palatable tracks here and worth a listen, but mostly I found this to be a drag. The baroque/cabaret style of pop is not my favourite style of music, and this album generally did nothing to change that view.
Кинематографичность, лирика, но как-то совсем не вызывает эмоций
Is this meant to be a joke? Or an ironic satire? Certainly his voice is good, but I feel like I wandered into a lounge in a dystopian noir film.
Just kind of weird.
Okay…
I get it, but not for me.
The first track really pulled me in. I loved the dramatic sound, the off-beat lyrics, and the high energy. So I was ready some a fun, quirky, theatrical, very British jaunt through 12 tracks. Then the rest of the album happened. Ballad after ballad. Sure there were some moments of energy, but nothing that matched the first track. Sometimes things got a little more interesting in the slower songs. But it wasn't enough to get past the production choices. The theatrical nature of the album works in the first track and then quickly becomes grating and dated. It just gets boring after a while. What the hell is he even going on about? I guess I just wonder who this is for? Like who is going to sit there and listen to "Windows of the World" and just eat that shit up? Please reveal yourselves, Scott Walker super fans. I didn't hate this enough to give it one star, but it's close. Especially when the final, what, three tracks are these slow-ass ballads? Like way to go out with a whimper, dude. Two stars and it feels generous. Standout Track: Jackie
Sounds like theme songs from 60's Bond movies.
Sounds like a 60”s Bond soundtrack.
Great voice, but it feels very soulless
# Album Name: Scott 2 # Artist: Scott Walker # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Wow, this was an absolute snoozefest. Hasnt aged well at all. Couple of decent tracks like Jackie and next. But the rest tries to be OTT. It just gets too much. I didnt hate it but definitely disliked it. # Top Tunes: Jackie # Would I listen to it again? No
cheers scott, i don’t have alot to say about this one
It’s ok. Halfway through I was eager for it to be over with
Can hear how this must have influenced the likes of Nick Cave and Divine Comedy, but not really one for me.
I really didn't know what to make of this album. Reminded me very much of Neil Diamond.
Not my kind of music, but the songs are good and the voice is powerful and emotive. But the sappy production is off-putting for me. If it was presented in a more singer-songwriter style or troubadour style, but the string arrangements are saccharine sweet. Non mercy. 2.5 stars
Punchy in a way that kind of blurs the lines between singing and comedy. Hasn't aged well, in some ways, but is fun in the others.
I checked the track-list hoping I was close to the end at song 4. The music sounds like it belongs in a campy musical, and gets tired very quickly. Which is a shame, because reading through the lyrics, there’s some really good storytelling on this album.
I dont really see the need for this dude. This world already has one Neil Diamond and one Neil Diamond is enough for everyone. Plus I got a gross vibe on the whole album. Without looking into this guy at all, I'm guessing there has to be loads of allegations out there regarding his conduct around the ladies.
😮💨 Crooner music gone weirder and creepier?? Not an easy listen.
check ich nich
Good voice, but a bit boring and dated. Standout songs: Best of Both Worlds
Sounds like if lumiere from beauty and the beast had a lounge act in Vegas.
I bought into it at the start, but got a bit bored. Not as interesting as Scott 4, I think he was doing original material by that point. Not a fan of his covers of Jaques Brel.
Thought I recognised the name and it is the second offering we've had from Scott....I checked my previous review and I could basically copy and paste it for this album too, so I will: Didn't know of Scott Walker before this and this hasn't inspired me to want to hear more. All a bit dull and dated sounding. Not terrible though. Sorry Scott
Okay sorry but, this one gave the ick. Also the affectation of his voice is not enjoyable. There was such a divide on the vocals with the sweeping instrumentals. Anyways, not really a fan and really not that well written.
Windows Of The World // 2.5/5
Great voice. Terrible taste of music. Cover of Alex Harvey's Next is the worst cover version I've ever heard......and that includes William Shatner.
First song was fun then it became a struggle. Low 2
Komisk mye vibrato.
UK’s Neil Diamond.
Feels very dramatic at times with his powerful and emotional voice, which can definitely be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you like. I didn’t hate it myself but I didn’t love it either. The music itself isn’t much interesting to me though. Feels like I’m getting serenaded on some Italian villa. Alright I’m getting sick of this voice and music now I just want the album to be over. Yeah this was pretty uninteresting, I am not a fan of the overuse of the dramatic voice with dramatic violins and then the occasional just weird track where he puts some weird ahh beat on to sound a little creepy or something and starts singing some really strange lyrics about like sex and stuff (I didn’t like Next if you couldn’t tell lol)
My grandparents’ grandparents probably loved this
Easy listening in the style of Andy Williams, with all the songs sounding one note. Though none of the songs are horrible, they aren’t that memorable either. 2.5
This all sounds like old-fashioned pop crooning with soft big band / orchestra backing, musically it all sounds like the theme tune to some forgotten off-brand James Bond film from the 60s. It's impossible to take seriously as art for me. However, "Next" is perhaps the wildest juxtaposition of message and presentation I have ever heard. It's absolutely psychadelic and totally arresting, at least for me. I was so stunned listening to the story and experiences (not in a good way) that this album kind of justifies its inclusion on that basis alone apart from any historical value. "The Girls and The Dogs" I guess is supposed to be an amusing song, but I am basing that on the musical backing and final "punchline" as opposed to the bitterly misogynistic lyrics.
jag är nog inte så hemskt förtjust i den här barock-pop genren
At one point, I was thinking I wished I could give a 2.5 because the music itself was delight - but man, those lyrics.
👎
Tom Jones wannabe
Honestly, didn't really like it...
This album really sounds like a parody. Of what, I'm not sure. Music itself maybe? It's filled with some really beautiful orchestrations but I had to skip several songs because I couldn't enjoy the man's voice. He sounds like he wants to sound like Sinatra but also wants to be a better singer than Sinatra so as a compromise, he only recorded vocals when he had a cold. What a weird experience this is. The Girls and the Dogs is great. It feels really cinematic but also theatrical. Man it is weird to hear him croon words like ass and piss. Totally bizarre. Totally parody.
An absolute struggle from start to finish. like a musical that i don't want to see
2.5
The backing band is solid but I find Scott, his vocal style, and lyrics to be shite.
Wikipedia podaje "baroque pop", cokolwiek to znaczy. Podkład "The Girls From The Streets" dziwnie kojarzył mi się konstrukcyjnie z muzyką Wojciecha Kilara do "Draculi" Coppoli, bardzo dużo słuchałem ostatnio tego albumu. Przez dużą część albumu byłem z lekka zniesmaczony i bardzo skonsternowany tym, czego słuchałem. 2,5/5, bo przynajmniej dziwność albumu przykuła moją uwagę.
Just no
Production and vocals were spot on, but it became a bit droning for me after about 4 songs. Everything just kind of ran together, and started sounding the same.
Lounge lizard music - ugh
Horrible lyrics.
Yeah, Scott 2 starts really well then gets old very quickly. He thinks he has top-tier crooning chops but can't hang with the best of them, and most of the work isn't his, so it's quite shallow, even if Jackie is really good. 2.
Like if Zap Branigan made an album
Like if Zap Brannigan made an album. That being said, the flamenco flair to the music was pretty neat.
It's like fucking Michael Buble meets Nick Cave. Baroque pop or chamber pop. Super boring. His other album I had (Scott 4) was more rock oriented. This leans further to the crooning/pop. Definately not in my wheelhouse. Hate this crooning shit. Favourite songs: Black Sheep Boy, Jackie Least favourite songs: Next.... and others..... 2/5....i dunno.... I lost interest very early on.
Not my cup of tea at all but Scotty’s got a pleasant enough voice
Sounds like Neil diamond on drugs
This guy obviously had a heavy influence on The Divine Comedy (the band, not the poem), and to be honest I’d rather listen to them
Like musical rock or something. Idk, not for me.
Ziemliches Gejodel, viele Geigen
This was fkn weird man
This sounded more like a movie soundtrack than something I'd listen to on its own, and some creepy lyrics about women, so not my favourite that's for sure..
I don't know this is odd but I can respect that unique oddness I suppose. This felt like a musical more than an album in terms of it's style which was interesting. Didn't really enjoy it but kind of cool
Very strange. 2
2 scott 2 furious
This is #day118 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... this album's name speaks for itself. I guess I'm just not a big fan of crooners and this kind of music. It does sound dated. I was leaning toward a 2 as the title suggests, so be it. Looking forward to #day119.
Apparently controversial at the time due to its risqué content, particularly on the opening track "Jackie" which was banned by the BBC in the UK. Sounds a bit dated now.
Leadoff "Jackie" is good and he has a good singing voice but this baroque pop isn't for me.
he sings like a guy who's trying to make his voice deeper
4/10 Flat imitation of a better album felt like
This man should do musicals and it is not very interesting as an album
Wears on you as it goes on. I got really tired of his voice. Not to say it’s bad, it just gets very showtune-sy
Are these songs from a play or something? I feel like I've already listened to a different numbered Scott Walker and wondered the same thing. I didn't hate it but can't imagine why anyone would think it should be on the list. Wowza, "Next" takes a turn with the narrative. "Plastic Palace People" is rough. I think I might hate it now. "Wait Until Night" might have turned it back around. Nevermind, the rest of the album is pretty forgetful. Doesn't belong on the list. More off than on.
I just don't know how to describe this album. It's like some strange amalgamation of movie soundtrack, show tunes, and Tom Jones.
look I'm not saying this is totally without value and that scott walker lacks talent or skill, but i am saying that i found it boring and annoying
