Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Not my thing, too much noise, too dissonant. I am not that angry.
It's Slipknot, 3rd album from them for me. Their debut is actually better than the other album by a mile, and there are some sick riffs throughout, but it's still far too edgy and cringe to be enjoyable for longer than 30 mins. Went with Spit It Out for my playlist, but any of these would do, its kind of all the same.
Nicht meine Musik!
Not my genre hinestly. For what it is, this is penalty a good representation of the genre. I remember some of these songs from the radio in high school. I’m not into the screamo thing.
I hate screamo- nothing against the singer just can’t personally get past it. The drums were Insane tho
Thought this was going to suck. It pretty much did, but some of the riffs and arrangements were quite good. Still won’t ever listen to it again.
not for me
Not my cup of tea.
Get why its on here... But my watch told me to relax three times while listening to this because my heartrate was spiking. I absolutely don't get the desire to fray your nerves in this manner.
In certain scenarios I think i enjoy this more - the way I listen to these albums I can’t - it’s a very good album but not something I enjoy listening too
2.5 for me. There are some good songs and ideas in there. It’s just all of it just sounds chaotic and finished in a bit of a mess by the end if I’m honest they did some better songs later on to be fair
Wild
Sounds like early Korn
I feel like I get it, but Slipknot always trailed system and rage for me. not my corner of this genre
Not not a fan of Slipknot, but they were always a bit too heavy for me and this album is sort of the epitome of why. Super thrashy and angry, whereas I prefer their more melodic stuff
Not my favorite Slipknot album by a long shot. I think they really killed it with Iowa. This album just doesn't quite get there for me.
This is what I imagine Stephen Miller listens to when he's edging.
Not sure this list needed multiple Slipknot albums, but sure. It's exactly what I expected going in. I'm always kind of disappointed in Slipknot because Corey Taylor has a nice voice but he insists on doing the heavy metal scream singing that is just grating to my ears.
There is a lot going on in this album that I would enjoy... if it wasn't absolutely smothered in all the things I dislike about the average heavy metal song. Frustrating and disappointing.
Not for me.
How the fuck do these guys have 2 albums on the list
I was listening to soft Christmas music before this and it already felt like this was going to be a hard pivot just based on the cover art. Sure, why not start the album with what sounds like my screaming alarm clock but worse? Aside from that I actually vibed a little bit with some of the songs — I just find it hard to take all the yelling seriously. I think my problem is more with the genre than the album, but it’s a 2 nonetheless.
Pretty good except for 90% of the vocals.
I appreciate some of the drums. But. No joy has been sparked while listening so I'm good without this.
A SECOND Slipknot album? I dunno... One was okay. Listening notes: -This feels a lot tighter than our last slipknot. Everything is just more cohesive. -Why does spotify have to keep adding more moving imagery? Just let me navigate the damn app! (not relevant to this album but gosh the app just keeps wanting to do more) -Not sure I'm ever gonna be an unclean vocals guy, but it works a lot better here. -All that said, this is a really long album, and the spotify version appears shortened from a version with a bunch more space between the last tracks. This irritates me. -The inclusion of rapping in Nu Metal (cf No Life) rarely works for me. -Finally decided to look up some lyrics on my second listen through. They clearly have angry punky vocals, but they aren't very articulate about their issues with the world. It seems they're just angry for the sake of anger, like high schoolers, which I find kinda boring. Review: Hard to rate an album that I think does what its trying to do well, when what it's trying to do isn't something I particularly like. Just gonna be true to myself and say that I didn't enjoy this. 2 stars. Guitar is clearly talented, if not particularly my thing.
nu metal more like ew metal am I right? drums are lit. the drumming alone gets them 2 stars
OK
It’s over now
I'm sensing a lot of anger here. The drummer was pretty good.
I’m not a fan but it’s important. The 2 stars reflect my not being a fan rather than my ‘this doesn’t belong here.’
Wow proper shouty , metal , and have to admit didn’t like it a whole lot , however I have seen this band at Leeds and enjoyed the experience as it was full on mosh pit and I was slightly drunk a theme which will emerge through these reviews
NuMetal champions of the 90s along with Limp Bizkit but just not my cup of tea.
Slipknot's self-titled album is resolutely simple and uncomplicated - angry, raw and with a lot of drums. Good for what it is ("hate" fuelled metal), but not good if you don't enjoy this type of music.
Mostly lame edgelord shit for 14 year old boys.
When done well, the energy of heavy metal it's awesome, if there is a gimmick, it's generally not so.
Too much anger.
Now, did I like this more than I expected or hate it less than expected. Not my bag but not terrible. Reminiscent of BodyCount, don’t like them either
this came during my hour of need...... and then immediately gave me a headache. i wanna give it 2.5 ok
At first it reminded me of when I used to listen to more metal leaning rock but it got old fast. I’m just not really into it, though I think their later stuff might be easier for me.
I liked the rap one. This was angry. Top tracks: “Only One,” “Eeyore”
I dont believe i needed to hear this. Do i get a badge for enduring it all?
First few songs I was like jamming out but as it kept going I got tired of it :(
Not a massive fan of their image but I thought Spit It Out was awesome.
Debut album that is too long and more about mood than anything else. Hearing this as an adult it's kind of hard not to just say it sucks, but knowing things connect in different ways at different times I can see why this could be on the list. Not loving it, Wait and Bleed is pretty much the only thing that got radio play because it's the most conventional song, but they went all in on their direction, costumes and all. I'm sure an angry kid who wants to get punched in a pit loved this.
A good example of a time and place. There is room for all music. Some music is more of an introduction for the youth or more about a feeling than anything else. They are one of the best at what they do and I respect the showmanship.
I’m more of a Deftones guy
fanno troppo casino
Physically cringed when I pulled this. Physically cringed when I listened to it. 2/5
Not a genre of music I really like.
Correcto
More like slipkNOT to my taste. I remember hearing about this band when I was 10 years old. I was intrigued by the masks. Then I heard the music and knew it wasn't my thing. Most of the songs are pretty concise compositions, which is nice. I am surprised to read so many reviews that describe this as "chaotic". Not really, dude. It's loud, it's percussive, there's obvious technical skill, it's in-your-face, but it's all pretty intentionally controlled and structured. Go listen to The Shaggs for true chaos. Standout track: "Eyeless", "Scissors" (some cool textural work here) 1001 Album Generator, please stop making me listen to Nu Metal. Nu thank you.
Not for me
Bleh. Cool drums at points. Fun masks ig? Hard to hear what theyre saying lol. Cool sample in the beginning. Shout out iowa. TWO!
Look, there's a time and a place where a bit of furious Nu-Metal can be fun and get the adrenaline going in a good way. At my age, unfortunately these times and places are few and far between. He sounds so unbelievably angry at the world, and this is 1999. They have no idea how angry the world is going to make us all 20 years on. And why is he taking it out on me? Just tirades of yelling and fury. I can pick out some elements that I enjoy but there's just so much overdramatic noise that I'd never ever choose to put it on. I guess I'm not really its audience anymore though.
- like better, less-produced Disturbed, but still not really to my taste. none of the songs are distinct and all of them sound pretty much the same. I actually paused during the middle of "(sic)" and put on System of a Down's Toxicity album as I was driving because it seemed similar musically, but better executed (or at least had Serj Tankian's singing style to carry it more effectively) - still, I appreciate the use of sound effects (as other late-90s albums were doing), like the sound of metal hitting metal and other things that establish a specific mood or feel - there was always that kid in high school with a Slipknot shirt, fried box-dyed hair (usually black or bright red), and a hint of body odor walking around blasting something by this band, so that image was brought into my listening experience. I had several acquaintances who embodied this stereotype in high school, but even though I was also listening to metal at the time, the "everyone is stupid, I want to rip out their throats" type of metal was out of my comfort zone - I'm not too sure, but it seems like this brings violence to a personal level, which I'm sure many disinfranchised teens connect with. other popular metal bands like Metallica were singing about general war atrocities and the horrors of religion in songs like "One" and "Creeping Death," but early nu metal songs here like "Eyeless" ("How many times have you wanted to kill/Everything and everyone? Say you'll do it but never will") bring that violence down to an uncomfortably individual level
not in 100.001
Yeah it’s inventive and a level above mere metal and thrash, but that doesn’t mean it’s enjoyable for the non metal among us
The Good: We learn a knot… The Bad: It is mainly used for one thing… The Ugly: Screwing up the knot… Band and album name match… so boring. What did I think about the music? Well, most of my colleagues are fans… but then again, they also all drink the same piss beer… so there’s that. Slipknot is not my cup of tea, probably because I don’t like the mix where the drums take front-stage sonically speaking, and I rather hear some guitar… The screamin’ voice thing, well, that’s just fun for a minute, not an entire album… 2 1/2* downgraded
This came the day after Chocolate Starfish, the bar was basically embedded into the concrete, but they cleared it. With a push.
2,4
A generous 2. Not for me. Generous because I don't want to be harsh.
I came of age when Korn, Deftones and Limp Bizkit were breaking out. TBH this reminds me of the first Soulfly record. anyway. I don't feel like it's bringing anything new to the genre, so I don't get why it's here.
Y'know, it wasn't as bad as I expected. I would give it a 5/5 if it was only for the drums. Actually all the percussion in general. Plus the electronic & industrial elements as well made for a more interesting listen (and the varying vocal techniques was neat!). I feel like that's the best way I can describe it overall, "interesting", not bad nor good. But I do feel like I kept waiting to hear some riff or motif or SOMETHING that would make me "Ah, I get it now" but it never came. Also those lyrics.... from what I could understand, it’s very on-the-nose, in-your-face, angsty, juvenile, nihilistic, etc etc. I know that’s probably a genre staple but I honestly would have preferred more distorted screaming and growling just so I wouldn't be able to discern the words. Maybe I just need to listen to nu-metal that's not in English? 3.5/10 Favs: Hmmm maybe Prosthetics?
There but for the grace of God goes Mushroomhead, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Static-X, Coal Chamber, Sevendust, Deftones, P.O.D., Staind, or any number of other Nü Metal bands that I can't tell apart. The masks don't help.
Slipknot is kinda weird among my other "greatest hits" bands, because they've released several bangers over the years. They've also made a lot of songs that have rightfully earned them a very rude nickname.
3 Songs würde ich nochmal hören, den Rest eher weniger, ist mir zu aggressiv. Topsong: Wait and Bleed
Not my cup of tea. Feels a bit cheesy and angsty for me. Hard to take it too seriously.
2/5. Look, slipknot definitely have a reputation and they really uphold it from listening to it for the first time. 14 year old me would have eaten this up, these lyrics really fit in the "deep" category, heavy on the quotes. It is crazy the range and diversity of the vocals, they do not sound like they are from one singer. The genre hopping, with a mix of metal, rap, electronic, etc. feels so overwhelming, which does seem like the goal for them. The instrumentation is fantastic, which is the most frustrating part considering the context of the music, which is mostly not great. Either way, I can see why people don't like this record, I know I don't, but I can't knock the skill, it's not something I'm putting on myself. Best Song: Spit It Out, (sic), Eyeless
All that work into the image feels totally shattered by the contents of this album.
i don’t like this kind of music
I was looking forward to listening to this, but then I heard the first record scratch and sample, & it gave me the nu metal cringe immediately. Then all the song lyrics were about killing or self-harm or I don't care what you think, but stop being so judgey. Slipknot has two percussionists & one of them plays garbage cans or scrap metal. In some cases, I heard the snare drum from Metallica’s St. Anger pop up & I didn’t like that. I didn’t get into Slipknot when this came out in 1999 & nothing has changed, it seems. I liked Wait and Bleed & that’s about it. The other single, Spit It Out, sounded like a heavy 311 song to me in the chorus. For really angry people, which at this point is most of the country and fans of record scratching in their metal, this album is for you, but as for me, I’m sticking with old metal, not nu metal.
Arriving just in time for the next iteration of teenage angst from bored and old folks, Slipknot fills the air with its abrasive thrash and bellowing screams that pierce through with its relentless aggression that would surely find a willing audience. For most bands of their ilk, it would be a defining album but Slipknot were just getting started. Favorites: Eyeless, Wait and Bleed, Tattered & Torn, Me Inside, Liberate, Prosthetics, No Life.
These guys remind me of my 3 and 5 year old daughters. When things aren’t going their way they always turn to anger, which is a very freeing feeling. Letting go of any kind of responsibility for a situation and blaming the world instead. Slipknot didn’t come to their senses though, as my children often do. Instead they put on masks and screamed…..a lot. Curious to know each of these guys commitment to the bit. Who thought the outfits were dumb and who thought they weren’t spooky enough. This brings me back to a pivotal moment in my life, around 2000. 10 years old and finding my musical footing. Exploring classic rock but also hiding in a crawl space in the basement listening to Insane Clown Posse. My friend showed me the new Disturbed album, The Sickness, which has a grotesque looking creature on the cover. Another had just showed me an AC/DC album. I chose AC/DC, the light, opting to not be disturbed. I haven’t looked back! As for the music, I didn’t hate it. Cannot do a full album, but about 3 songs in was sort of impressed.
By way of working at McDonalds in high school, I became introduced to slipknot from my manager’s hazing prank. He blasted slipknot on our community stereo while I was taking orders from the drive through. It’s hilarious thinking back on what I probably looked like wearing the headset trying to hear a customer’s order with Psychosocial raging in the background. It went on for at least two minutes while the crew played it cool. I eventually saw them laughing and they finally cut it off. That was 2009 IIRC Kind of feels like a movie scene 😂 I did become a fan of some of slipknots mid 2000s stuff and was somewhat excited to hear their debut. Some of it was alright. I liked Liberate, Only One and Wait And Bleed. This early stuff isnt as melodic/interesting as their mid 2000s material. You can get a taste for their later stuff by listening to Purity. 2.5 stars and rounding down
What an EXPERIENCE. I listened to this during work so had my heart rate at a solid 150 while I was building a spreadsheet. Pretty intense. This genre is such a novelty that I'm more able to treat this like an exercise than something like Morrissey that's a shitty example of a genre I usually like. As music, I find it hard to evaluate because it's such sensory overload. I'm mostly just amazed they can keep this up for an entire concert. Is the lead singer / screamer just burning out his vocal cords for our entertainment? The musical equivalent of football players giving themselves CTE. Tough to listen to in more than one way. I feel like I've heard here and there that the musicians in these screamo bands are often technically very good. Curious whether this group of Music Men agree. To my ears, I throw on a gas mask and muscle some power chords out there and no one would know I wasn't in the band. From an anthropological perspective, this is pretty fascinating. Screamo was such an interesting era. It clearly spoke to some group of people (15 year old boys I think?). I wonder what people with those feelings are turning to these days....maybe this was a healthier outlet for rage than alt right stuff on the internet. Looking back on it, there was such a lifestyle with all this stuff - you listen to Slipknot or MUSHROOMHEAD, you shop at Hot Topic, you might have a skateboard, you watch Saw movies. Since this music feels pretty squarely aimed at angsty teenagers, it's pretty funny thinking about how the band members were in their 20s when it came out. I wonder if they were putting on an act (like Mr Rogers appealing to kids) or if they all genuinely felt it when they were screaming FUCK IT ALL, FUCK THIS WORLD, FUCK EVERYTHING THAT YOU STAND FOR. Either way I hope these guys eventually found happiness
This would be a 4 for the drumming if not for the terrible rapping (sometimes) and singing. Seriously great drumming when it's allowed to be the focal point of the music.
Hard to get through. Found myself feeling relieved when the sound of the kitchen tap drowned it out. I can see how it would be cathartic if you're already angry. Talent is undeniable but not my cup of tea.
So close to a 1. I couldn't even finish it, but the only reason I'm bumping it up to a 2 is because I know, as far as this genre is concerned, these guys are good, just incapable of making music that sounds appealing to me.
Man, the music isn't bad but who is this rage directed at? "Society"? These edgelord lyrics are just so painfully corny, and give off the same vibes as the terrible Joker memes you might see on Facebook -- "don't mess with me I'm so sick and twisted" type shit. Slipknot's masks only double down on the 'why so serious' energy. This might have resonated in 1999, but hearing it fresh today...... 😭
Simmer down mate. I thought the drums were good then realised it’s the same thing ad nauseam.
I wanted to like it but the vocals dragged it down.
This was a tough one. I can hear the musical benefit of this extreme thrash metal, but I won't be listening to it again. 2/5
sure
5/10
Very along the lines of Korn and Pitch shifter, Pantera, etc. A little more along the Death Metal spectrum tho.
Okayish
I think you need to be in the right frame of mind for this one. Fortunately I pretty much was. It was as shouty as I expected, but not as metal. More drum and bass? Quite liked it.
Not my cuppa tea but listened to it. It was ok don’t think I will listen again 2 stars
Holy screaming bullfrog! Just shut the 'eff up!
Not a fan of screaming
not for me. at all.
Yes. Wait and bleed. And then there's that.
This is first proper listen to one of their albums. My cousin was a massive fan back in the day.
Gave it another go today but as much as an influence they were to many future bands and a large proportion of a generation I still wasn’t engaging in it, understanding it or liking it, Feel maybe I should’ve but you just can't force yourself it.
I liked some of it. But no way would this be in the 1001 albums everyone should listen to. That being said, The music was crazy and interesting sometimes. I liked “eyeless” a lot! But when he sang instead of screamed, it was awful. Or the almost rapping. That was terrible. Maybe the next album got rid of that. I liked this a lot more than I expected though.
Ruined my morning
Aggressive is putting things lightly here. I hesitate to classify this as nu metal, as this is heavier and a little more structured and varied than most nu metal from the late 90's. A little more emphasis on the rhythmic drumming and percussion for example, which I found interesting. That's about where it ends as far as my interest goes, however. I've never really been into this hyper-aggressive, lyrically angsty, metal music. A lot of the content sort of lends itself to sounding similar to one another too.
Needs more autotuning. ;) I do not find this even as interesting a pure noise rock. When they got to asking "What did I do to deserve this?" I realized nothing and moved on.
⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 53 This SlipNutz album isn’t half bad, although I much prefer them live bumbling around slipping on their 🥜! Thanks Conan 🙏 🤡🥁🤡🥁- sums up this album perfectly. Screaming incoherently, head banging, channeling primal rage I just wish I had a semblance of what the hell they’re so upset about. Raw, chaotic, and genre-defining, with aggressive riffs, pummelling drums and turntable sampling, I respect their effort just lacks the emotional depth. 🎧 Classic Track: Wait and Bleed 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Scissors 🚫 Skip Track: Tattered and Torn Released at the height of nu-metal, Slipknot fused that genre’s bounce and attitude with extreme metal intensity, creating something heavier, more aggressive, and more unhinged than its contemporaries. From the jump, you’re hit with percussive violence, distorted chaos, and raw emotion. It’s feral, fast, and frightening—but there’s a weird sense of groove underneath it all. The chaotic go hard or go home production will be off putting to most with little patience for metal music and lyrically (what you can make out) is quite juvenile. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Clown show There is clearly some impressive musicianship here especially the unbelievably erratic drumming, creatively fearless and brazen, just don’t listen with the volume too high! 👂⚡️
Anstrengend
budget mr bungle
2.1 1x not much interest to listen to this again. just a bunch of noise, and technically it's decent, not too interested to listen again. (10th anniversary 1h 18m album) catch up 5/27/25
I wanted to like this, but just don’t. Another one that isn’t quite 1 star but isn’t too far from it. It’s a shame as Corey Taylor has a great voice, but it’s completely wasted with Slipknot.
Too much
Veel te hard en agressief voor mijn doen
These guys have zero touch. Maybe they intend it to be that way. I’m not impressed by it, but maybe some people like drinking out of the fire hose.
I appreciate Slipknot. I've seen them live a few times and they put on a great show - energetic and entertaining. With that said they do not make the type of music I enjoy, and listening to this whole album was a drag. The only song I would listen to again was Wait and Bleed. 3/10
I never really got into Slipknot, despite loving a lot of similar music back in the day. "Wait and Bleed" is the first song I recognized, and I don't dislike it. 'I felt the air rise up in me' is a line people would say a lot. I don't have too much to say. I didn't really like the album. It's metal in a way that I don't really like. A lot of it is angry noises that aren't meant to be fun to listen to, just loud. 3/10
I know some people enjoy this type of metal, but I don't get it, and it's hard for me to judge accurately
I used to consider myself a low-key fan of Slipknot, but now I'm not so sure anymore. Feels like I probably was more of a normie all along. While I dig their sound and think they are quite unique as a band, I had a hard time enjoying most of this record. I like all of their more "mainstream" hits like 'Duality', 'Before I forget' and so on. But an album of, for me, less known and never heard of songs, proves to be a quite bigger challenge to digest. The issue for me generally is that I think it lacks hooks that are easy to tap into. Granted, the genre is not my home turf at all, but I just feel like the songs just gets too noisy and crowded. I am a bit disappointed with my reaction to this, but in the end I can't deny that I don't really see the beauty of the album. Going to have to be a 2, as I can't see myself going back to this really.
ooof. man i tried with this. some redeeming things early on but wow did it fall off at the end. speaking of the end this was waaaaaay too long. try as i might i am just not a nu metal guy. this was a 1.5 for me. i will round up because i just had a coffee so i am feeling generous.
Not my scene
Love the music. Can't listen for even a second to the vocal.
Didn't like it then. Don't like it now. Its close, but so many things I don't like in Slipknots music.
Complete
Hate that cover. 1.5.
Yo slipknot is on this? That’s crazy lol. I got a weird relationship with numetal, bit of a guilty pleasure for me— freak on a leash is an all timer. Album cover is kinda stupid, but I still like the design of their masks it’s gimmicky but in a cool way. 1 Not really feeling this as an intro, kinda abrasive and doesn’t come together quite right rhythmically. A skip for me. 2 ok now we’re talking, the kick is crazy on this. Bit of loud war fuzz for sure, but it kinda adds to the edgy aesthetic. It def is edgy, but like the drums rip so fucking hard and I can hear every time the bass strings hits the pickup but like a good way. Kinda overstays its welcome, feels like a long 3 and change to me. 3 I’ve heard the intro to this song before (word to StarPowerDrummer) it is so so so good. When the vocals and bass drop in proper too they speed up just a tad and I can feel my body getting twitchy wanting to be in a pit man. Like yeah the lyrics kinda suck, but it’s such a full commitment that if you kinda just turn off your brain and buy in (very aided by the drums and being as insane as they are) it’s really fun. I’m down. Listened to the rest of this at work, so just short thoughts for the rest because I wasn’t writing while listening: 4 Feels the most radio ready slipknot is gonna get, and so kinda tame. Not a whole lotta punch or distinctiveness. Good length though and the vocals and breakdown at the end are good 5 This feedback thing is kinda what the first track tired to do— still doesn’t work. Fucking love the percussion though, the clanks are great lol. Lyrics are a bit of a tantrum, but I’m kind of always down for a fuck the man song. Again, what makes the vocals work is that they fully buy in— there’s no wink or nudge or joke to get, he’s just mad. Last 40 seconds or so rip 6 Guitar sounds a little flat on this one. The rap and scratches are fun but kinda shit lol 7 Slow build on this, I like the patience and the payoff— still don’t like the feedback though. 8 Wish the kick was given more bass in the mix. Trash can cymbal is back, love it. Hook vocals are a little corny 9 “Liberate my madness” kinda doesn’t mean shit, does it? Like that doesn’t really make sense? This is the first song that really starts to see this record feel kinda bloated, nothing here to remember besides a cool lil bit of metric modulation with the 3 over 4 riff over drums. Still good vocals, still technically good, just nothing new. 10 This song is kinda gross man. I think the my parents are divorcing and I’m angry at the world music only works if you’re angry at the world, not at a specific entity— otherwise it just feels like a kid throwing a tantrum. The fact this entity seems to be a potential romantic partner just makes this track feel super rapey. 11 Zack de la Rocha woulda done this song better, but it’s still alright. Their drummer is so fucking good 12 Kick is way too small and clicky on this song, bugs tf outta me— feels like such an obvious thing to fuck up. I like the vocal layers 13 The rapping on this is not good, which sucks cos I like the bass and turntable stuff on this. Cutttime on chorus is good too. This is def what seventh graders play before getting in a fight on a blacktop though lol. Ugh but the drums are so GOOD. But no, doesn’t work as a whole. Same trouble as track 10. 14 I can appreciate what they’re trying to do, but ~8 minutes on the 14th track of an album otherwise pretty quick and dirty is a big ask, and it just doesn’t have a cinematic quality I buy into. Commitment can’t overcome stale instrumentation and form. 15 Blastbeat rips, lyrics are braindead in the best way, decent closer. Look— if you buy in, there’s stuff to like here. I think being angry at everything and everyone is, whether we like to admit it or not, a very human emotion. Consequently, I don’t really buy the idea that numetal aged poorly as a larger concept or form? But the sound and aesthetics themselves fray at the edges, and the album’s cutting floor could’ve been a little more cluttered.
Not completely unlistenable, a couple of interesting elements due to them putting the nu into nu-metal. Preferable to the earlier thrash metal albums on this list - also amazing how many subgenres there are - I am curious about melodic death metal in particular...
Really not my thing. Far too angsty and aggressive, though I can see its appeal to confused teenagers and young men with excess testosterone. Better than I anticipated TBF, but it all sounded much the same half way in, not even the decent production which had me paying attention early in the album could save it. Happy to report I made it through the original release in its entirety, but I won’t be rushing back to Slipknot.
I don't diminish and trash on a genre of music or a band simply because I can't find enjoyment listening to it; Slipnot is no different. I do not understand this type of music, and I never will, and that is okay. I am impressed by the intensity with which the instruments are played, the sound the band can create, and the vocal fry the singer expertly and masterfully produces. I will confess that I did enjoy/tolerate a few songs, and I have listened to Slipnot in the gym as the intensity/aggression of the music while working out can act as a motivator. Outside of the gym, however, I cannot fathom why anyone goes out of their way to listen to this.
For all of their innovation and skill, I still find myself bored with Slipknot.
Fucking Slipknot. I had a string of banger albums so of course it couldn't last. Is it a good album? No Does it mark a point in culture? Probably. It just made me wonder what are the sad white boys listening to now a days? That virgin Andrew Tate? Guess there are worse things than slipknot. Anyway this album has a time and a place. I think this is better than the other one on this list (2 seriously?)but still not good.
Music for when your parents get a divorce
Didn't care for it.
We are in the dregs now. I had it too good for 600 days It's not like actively disgraceful but its pretty bad. It could do with some melody. Nu metal had a really specific time frame and outside of that time frame this music sounds unbelievably shit It'll be a 2, because it sounds like having a number 2. WHO DOES NUMBER 2 WORK FOR???
This is the first time I've played a Slipknot record. I was initially grabbed by the vim and vigour with which these lads approach their brand of metal. But a whole album of it left me a bit cold.
Genuinely tough to listen to. A few not-terrible choruses, but otherwise will always be the official music of middle school children of divorce.
2/10
Noise
Pleasantly surprised. It’s got some interesting percussion. I expected fast and intense but it was differentiated. Cant get over the screaming though…
Poor little diddums. I'd be angry if my throat hurt that much. There are some decent riffs BUT, those drums sound like a toy set while nobody can ever persuade me that that vocal style is anything other than a joke.
Not really into metal although there are some elements I quite like here. The drumming is awesome, I like the scratching too. Not a not huge fan of the shouty vocals though and it's too long, it just sounded like noise to me after a while
I hated it, obviously, but by and large that's because of the vocals. I recognize that there's something there otherwise (hence a two not a one) - in particular I admire the skill of the drummer, even if the tracks are hard for me to listen to.
The hope for this project was to discover albums I never would have listened to - and find new favorites. The revelation was that I don't hate metal. But this is what I always thought metal was. Some angry dude screaming at me and/or moaning/worshiping violence/murder/death/etc. There are other things I'd listen to to revel in anger/misanthropy. This isn't going to be it. And I acknowledge that the drummer is AMAZING. 2: I don't *hate* it, but I'm never going to seek it out, and I'm likely to skip it/turn the channel if it plays.
I think if I gave this more than 2 stars it would be an insult to Slipknot. So 2 stars or D- it is. They don't want me to like it and I don't.
It's nearly impossible for me to believe there ANOTHER Slipknot album on this list. I fucking hope there isn't a 3rd. 1. Annoying 2. Made it ¾ of the way through and skipped 3. No 4. I quite like the chorus, but the rest of the vocals I just can't deal with. I did listen to the whole song though 5. Skipped when the hoarse screaming started 6. This sounds like if Linkin Park sucked and then played a 311 cover at 4x speed 7. Nope. Skipped 8. Better, but still no. Skipped 9. Nope. Skipped 10. Listened all the way through. Not great, but at I could get through the whole thing 11. I got all the way through this one too. It wasn't for me 12. I think this was the track I liked most on this album so far. It seems like the back half of this has musical stylings that are closer to my tastes (still very much not my taste) 13. Also not bad. I'm not sure if the back half of this album is different, or it's sort of growing on me 14. Skipped when the vocals got all screamy. Had potential though 15. I listened all the way through, but wasn't enthusiastic about it I love Corey Taylor when he's doing his solo thing and with Stone Sour, but I just can't like this. I just do not like this kind of music. Admittedly, the drums are fucking CRAZY GOOD. Crazy good! All in all, I would have rather been listening to downtown traffic instead of this. 2
While I am not a fan of the screaming vocal style of the album, I absolutely respect the quality of the actual music. The driving drumming and exciting guitars make this an album worth listening to, I truly wish there was more of the singers actual voice.
Gross. These vocals ain’t for me, dog
crikey. I found this album pretty fatiguing after the first couple of songs. In small doses the songs are pretty good and I will say the drums are quite incredible, the start of Eyeless is very DnB-esque. But just sitting at home trying to work this was a hard listen. Maybe need to relisten when playing doom or summin. Fav song: Wait and bleed?
This is objectively better than the other things on this list that are adjacent to this genre of music at this time period. Obviously a talented band, just not for me.
There are waaay too many people in that band.
"Maybe if we scream incessantly and loud enough it will seem intense and interesting." No.
The drums are fantastic. Some songs are good but definitely not my favourite ones. But yes it’s a classic if you want to discover the band.
Not really my kind of music but tolerable.
If you're a white kid who does not dig hip-hop or rap, this would be the ideal music. Powerful, loud, and annoying. I understand how one could feel this music and have a visceral response to it. I'm just not that person.
Einhæft. Frábær trommuleikur. Lúðalegir textar. Hávaði bara á tímabilum. Ekki minn tebolli. Nu metal sökkar.
++: 742617000027, Eyeless, Spit It Out, Tattered & Torn, Frail Limb Nursery, Prosthetics +: (sic), Wait and Bleed, Liberate, No Life, Scissors +-: Surfacing, Diluted, Only One -: Purity, Eeyore --: Mudslide 5,5/10
Takes me back to high school, had some friends who would always play this or Godsmack, and I remember watching the debut on Conan. Scream metal isn't usually my thing, even with my taste in music expanding greatly. It can be hard to recognize bands or albums that are great at what they are but not in your wheelhouse. Raw energy that is contagious this whole album but exhausting by the end. Something that I would still only listen to situationally or as a part of another media (songs in video games) not casually on my own.
It’s wild how someone can growl-scream-sing and then sound like the gentle neighbor next door within seconds. Woah.
Några okej låtar, men mycket är faktiskt också helt vedervärdigt.
I am sure they are good, but not my jam at all. Or at least not today.
The only thing standing out was the drummer, but besides that: rapping/screaming, guitar riffs, and the rest like 1000s of other bands.
Think I've got something of a new found understanding of metal. I also understand that most of it is shit. But will this be different? No. (sic) sounds like an amphetamine-induced rampage, and as an opener it works pretty well. Can really imagine being in the mosh in the Des Moines metalfest, and punching a stinking teenager in the mouth with this one. Decent stuff. They aren't Pantera. They aren't Napalm Death. Thankfully. A scattering of interesting stuff here and there. But mainly feel like this pushes absolutely no boundaries and offers no memorable tunes.
Actually surprisingly fun. Almost a three.
This was exactly what I thought it would be: exhausting and boring at the same time.
This one was just such a nothing album to me. I enjoyed some of ‘Wait And Bleed’ and remember absolutely nothing else. I kind of liked their other album, but this one was just too Slipknot for me to at all care about.
Slipknot music is just bad pop music with heavy guitars....
Screamo isn’t for me, but the drums do go hard in a lot of these tracks, so there’s that at least.
Kiss for the Monday Night Raw era. While Slipknot is the tiniest bit better than their godfathers – Taylor can actually sing, Jordison’s drumming is technically impressive, and the guitar work is generally decent – the majority of this is nü metal watered down for 12 year olds. It works for a couple songs, mainly at the start, but most of this sounds as edgy and bland as you’d expect. More importantly, most of the songs here sound indistinguishable from each other, and I say that as a metal fan. The best songs are early on, specially “Eyeless,” or not even included on the record now, aka “Purity.” Everything else is the same rhythm, the same groove, the same edgy lyrics, and the same sing-scream-rap flurry of nonsense. All to sound tough. And I say all this as a nü metal defender. Grow up. Give up on Slipknot.
way too much yelling. drums were solid though.
2* for the drums
The sigh I sighed when I saw this had been generated...
I always thought there was room in the pantheon for a good Drum and Bass/Metal crossover album. Listening to this, I think I’m wrong. Metal (and its variants) is essentially nihilistic; Drum and Bass is hedonistic. In any case, this album won’t be the one. It’s not a bad album; just, like, predictable, I guess.
2.5? 2 feels harsh but I don’t think I can give the album a 3 given I felt the album was 15 minutes too long. I was just waiting for it to end. I think the latter half of the album blurs together quite a bit. The album also demands a level of concentration I was not willing to give it in order to understand what was actually being said in each song. Not to say I don’t like a screamer, but I’d prefer some annunciation. The impressive percussion casts a shadow on the other aspects of this work. It’s angsty, and it’s probably very fun live; metal usually is. Standouts for me were Eyeless (love the song’s lore) and Wait and Bleed.
Not my style
It just feels like its trying too hard to be edgy. I'm not always so keen on such aggressive music. It's not terrible it just didn't click with me. I can't recall a single song individually, all sounded alike.
Got a handful of fun ideas & sounds, wrecked by *terrible* production. Also wears out its welcome after half an hour; punk bands of the 70s and 80s understood to do your thing and get out after 35 minutes, all these metal groups go on like 3x too long
Never heard this before. Not something I'll listen to but I appreciate the variety shown while keeping in the particular style. I think I might like it with a more conventional singer. Of course, then it wouldn't be Slipknot, would it? Not sure two Slipknot albums need to be on this list. "You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes"
too heavy for my taste
Metal. I apparently really liked the other Slipknot album I listened to, but I didn’t care for this one. It sounded a little raw, too much screaming, not quite enough musicality to keep it interesting.
Angsty teenage me enjoyed this but my taste in metal has matured and though there are some decent riffs and relentless drums, overall this is a mess. It’s comical at times, with the bizarre lyrics and psychotic sound effects peppered in. I do think it’s worth listening to just to understand how wild the early 2000’s metal scene was and how truly tacky that time was. Wait and Bleed still kinda rocks, I’ll give them that but overall I found this to be a tough listen. 2 stars
I appreciate it was big in its day but so was Jared Fogle and look what happened there.
Relentless, but repetitive energy. It's raw, and could have been refined, but instead, it feels more like uncontrolled chaos. Korn wannabes, but lack the same musicianship that made Korn at least easier to listen to. It’s heavy, and it all blends together, losing impact. Layers for the sake of layers. Cory is a powerful singer, but this album doesn't really give that opportunity.
2 I’ve never claimed to be the biggest metal fan, but there are definitely certain artists and albums of the genre that I appreciate. Hell, there’s even a song or two by Slipknot that I appreciate - but boy, this album was a lot for me, and I say that as someone who regularly attends punk shows. Usually I hate when someone critiques an album as “all sounding the same” because, in my opinion, it’s lazy, and generally just means you’re not really giving it an honest listen, but I’ve listened to this thing three times and still couldn’t identify one song from another. Even the names all kind of blend together - I genuinely have no idea what drove 450 million Spotify users to the track Wait and Bleed and only 17 million to Me Inside. What’s really the difference? Anyway, that all to say, going with a 2 on this one because I genuinely don’t think it’s bad. I can definitely see how a bigger metalhead would appreciate this, and there are even certain aspects I was able to appreciate - for example, the drumming on this is really solid. Hell, if I’m being honest, I probably wouldn’t mind hearing a song off this album mixed in the musical queue, but 50 straight minutes is just too much - and this is an album that’s apparently supposed to be closer to 60. I guess two songs were removed for copyright infringement issues(?), so I went out of my way to give them a listen on YouTube. And… it turns out they’re the best two on the album. Not by a particularly sizable margin, nor are they drastically different (surprise, surprise), but if I had to pick favorites, it would probably be those two.
LAWDHAMMERCIES, we got the angry white boy demographic music again, why did they (the demographic) hate everything? Parents? Women? LIFE??... and why I did not notice that at ALL at the time? To show how far we've come (or how far the past had fallen) "Wait And Bleed" was nominated for a fucking Grammy. They continue to be nominated for Grammys, so maybe I'm the one in the wrong?
agresive. liked in when I was 16 less so now
If I wasn’t working out, I don’t think I could listen to this
I kinda wanted to like this more. But I like different flavors of angry music than this. Not big into the screaming argle bargle vocals for any bands. 2.5, but in this case, I can't round up. There were too many irritating songs for a 3*.
As someone born in 1996, I’ve always seen Slipknot as my generation’s pre-eminent metal band. Anybody at school who wasn’t into Busted or McFly would instead gravitate towards these nightmares, their heads banging and mouths drooling with anger to the teachers and hatred for their parents. Good for them, I guess. Somehow, I’ve gone my whole 28 years without hearing a single Slipknot song. That all changed today, with this debut album of theirs. The most immediate standout is Joey Jordison (RIP) on the drums: at once exhilarating and exhausting, he pummels the double-bass pedal within an inch of its life, until the bass drum is the only thing in the mix with any definition to latch onto. As for the rest of the band, I guess I can respect them. I appreciate Mick Thomson’s sludgy and growling guitars, the presence of samples, the ability to lock in at breakneck speed. I even respect Corey Taylor for his iconic screamed vocals, which boast a couple of diversions into singing or… shudder… rapping. The problem for me is, of course, that a whole album is far too much to stomach. My preferred version of late-90’s angst looks more like “The Boatman’s Call” or “69 Love Songs”, so Slipknot were always going to be a stretch. It’s testament to their commitment and performances that I’m coming out with a slightly higher opinion than utter, utter contempt. At the same time, I’m absolutely not putting myself through this again, so they can take these two stars and run (probably at 180BPM).
Enjoyed the drums, but far too childish for me. Not sure why it is on the list.
Nope, nope, nope. Not for me.
not my thing.
I do not like this kind of music.
A wall of sameness. Couple of sonic surprises.
Quit yelling at me telling me to die :(, though this album does make one consider it
Yeah. No
Yeah I guess if I grew up in dysfunction I’d need something to drown the noise.
Album 440 of 1001 Slipknot - Slipknot Rating : 2 / 5 Angry middle schoolers with a broken family probably loved this. Came a little late for me. Just a bit too extra for my liking. I do suddenly have an urge to check out some old Sam Kinison clips.
Enjoyed Sic, Eyeless was a slog though. Always liked Wait and Bleed. Spit it Out also stands out. Diluted, maybe. A lot of this is just sledgehammer though. Another review says this would be loads better if mixed properly and I couldn't agree more. There's some great moments in each song but I mostly just come away numbed from the onslaught and unable to pick stuff out, it's too much of an assault on the senses. They are probably another level of heavy in terms of metal and my tastes however. Also though I never thought Slipknot were up to SOAD or Deftones' level in terms of sheer number of good tunes, and I remain unmoved. Would probably have got a 3 if it wasn't an hour long but it has about 5 too many tracks and I got bored before the end, a cardinal sin.
Wow! Two Slipknot albums in one week. More than I ever thought I would listen to in my lifetime. This one felt slightly weaker than All Hope Is Gone but still decent. Going to give this one a 2 primarily because it's a lot more apparent this really isn't for me listening to two of their albums just days apart.
Serious cuffs of my JNCO baggy jeans are wet from dragging in mud puddles vibes. There’s some excellent technical musicianship here, but nothing that interesting about the music itself.
Not for me and I only made it a few songs in but I actually appreciated it more than I thought I would.
1.9 Ive never listened to a Slipknot album before. I always thought their whole schtick was pretty corny. It was a bit more Nu-Metal leaning than I was expecting. The lack of song structure was a bit interesting I guess and the drumming stood out as a plus. But its not something I will ever listen to again
this potentially is just slightly maybe a bit too angsty for me
I shouldn't have listened to this in bumper to bumper traffic. It just made me rage even more. I can appreciate this musically, especially that drummer, but the yelling/singing just puts me on edge.
I fuckin hate lots of metal and Slipknot is no exception. Growling and guitar-shredding is for kids. But I have to admit that this album is not as bad as I thought it would be. Hence 2 stars instead of 1.
Rather unsettling, which is probably an intended outcome, but not exactly what I want from my music. 3/10
Really good really not in the mood
Ihan liian pitkä. Viidennen biisin jälkeen ei tuotu mitään uutta.
Good on them for wearing masks and making it possible for dudes in the early 2000s to pretend to be in Slipknot. Better than a lot of other poops on here.
This group is just way too much for me 3/10
After submitting the review for yesterday’s delightful Devendra Banhart album, I felt something like whiplash when this one popped up. I can appreciate the catharsis of good, angry metal, but this was neither the album nor the day.
This was intense.
It could have been WORSE
I love heavy metal, but this was a bit too much for me. I think their drums and guitars are great.
I like a good amount of Slipknot, but I do not like this Slipknot.
Well this is about to be insane. If every song was like Wait and Bleed this would probably be a 4 but its not. Drums are sick though.
I was pretty apprehensive about this coming in, I've not enjoyed any of the screamer stuff that we've had and only really know this by reputation. Was better than I expected, but still really wearing. Disagree with Phil - there was not enough of the melodic stuff to break up the full on aggression (but I'm much less of a metal fan than he is). I can only really handle about 3-4 songs of this (and definitely no 8 minuters). Dithering whether to give it a 1 or a 2, I'll be generous and give it a 2 given that it was pretty influential, and I probably would enjoy it more in short bursts.
I guess it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be?
Not my cup of tea but the vocals are intriguing at times. Drums are insane/incredible
Glad I listened to it once. Can tick that off the list. Perhaps if I listened to it when I was cranky and 13 it might have meant something more to me. Good drumming of course. But no thank you sir.
2.5
Uhhh. No thank you
Short listen Heavy metal....have to be in that mood to listen
Why is this here?
If I was a 13 year old in the Midwest in 2000 I probably would’ve loved this shit. But I’m an elder gen z and in 2024 this just doesn’t hit. It seems gimmicky and cringe. I’ll give it an extra star for the drumming which honestly impressed me at points.
I'm not a fan of metal music, not sure about this one. Honestly, [sic] isn't a terrible track, it still has some shouting elements that I'm not crazy about but there are some interesting rap-like lyrical moments. Most of the next few songs have more aspects of metal that I don't care for as much. Lots of heavy power chords, mostly screaming lyrics. I will say this drummer is incredible, lots of interesting rhythmic elements using all aspects of the drum kit. There's a lot more to like in this album than I was expecting. "Tattered and Torn" has some fun/interesting effects in the production with the weird synth melody line and the beeping like a heart monitor in the background. 2/5
Mostly repetitive scream-chanting. Heavy drum set and guitar. Pretty entertaining overall.
2.5/5
I don't know. I guess it's not for me. Highlights: Wait and Bleed, No Life
Didn't dig nu-metal when it was popular. Can confirm: still don't dig it now. When I saw there was a nearly 9-minute song near the end of this album I skipped through it because it was a STRUGGLE to get through this album in general. As a big fan of horror, though, I appreciate the creepy imagery that many of Slipknot's songs and costumes have conjured up through the years. Standouts (If I must remain neutral on my hatred of nu-metal): Wait and Bleed, Spit It Out (which has some redeeming industrial sounds in it)
abrasive and somewhat outdated. some lyrics just fall flat and sound edgy for nothing
Didn't do anything for me.
Not for me. Instrumentation was good at times but vocals and lyrics took me wayyy out of it
First time listening to an entire Slipknot album. I wanted to like it but I can’t.
Wow. Their version of surfacing is soooooo much different than Sarah McLachlan's. I'm not saying which one is better, I mean, other than the fact that Sarah's version has 10 songs and this is only one song... It's been listened to quite a bit, though. Although there is nothing quiet about it. I'm not sure if there's a lot of anger in this album, but the way he screams makes me think he's angry. I'd like to ask him what his anger index was when they recorded this if I ever find myself enjoying a sunny afternoon sitting on the park bench next to him.
I can see why, if you like this genre, it’s good.
My review for All Hope is Gone applies appropriate for this album: This was a bit tricky to review. There were moments I was surprised to find I liked. It sometimes makes me laugh to hear the scary monster muppet voice proclaim doom. This isn’t going to be my thing, but I appreciated the exposure today. I would just add that I don't love the "guy screams at me" genres, but it was kind of fun to hear him scream at everyone from my car as I left work today.
I struggle to stay tuned into someone screaming at me which is what most of this album sounded like to me. The rhythms/drums are super fast and that is kind of cool, but it was a chore to not just filter it all out as noise.
RANT: A SECOND Slipknot album? Really?! I actually enjoyed the first one a bit and gave it a four (All Hope Is Gone). I appreciate the exposure to the better albums of this genre. But this album wasn’t nearly as good. Why did I need to hear BOTH of these before I die?! END RANT Ok, so I can’t blame Slipknot for getting the two albums on the list. But I really did not appreciate this one, leading me to resent this occupation of space denied other artists and genres that seem to be getting short shrift. Perhaps its charms have been lost on me, but I don’t feel this was productive listening time and will be happy to forget the whole thing. Except Liberate Bananas. That song was almost catchy.
not as bad as some of the comments make it out to seem, but it is certainty not something I'd listen to again. I would say that I would have enjoyed it in my teenage years, but I knew of Slipknot back then and found the whole mask thing lame.
There are TWO Slipknot albums on this list?! WHY?! As someone who spent all of the early aughts in the pit at metal and hardcore shows, I should like this. I did not. The weird, try-hard rapmetal thing isn't a good vibe and the production values... holy crap, it's bad. The snare drum sounds like he's playing on an old coffee can, the kick sounds like someone knocking on the front door, and everything else is compressed to hell so, even on hi-fi headphones it sounds like it's being played through an old shoebox. Seriously, WHY are there TWO Slipknot albums on this list?!
Another one? Y’all have already put me through this once before. I’m not in any mental state to listen to this in its entirety, but I know the vibe and it’s not for me. Sticking with 2 stars since they’re at least marginally better than Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit.
area woman once again is reminded she actually kind of likes heavy metal and has her whole life but she always forgets
Eyeless Wait and Bleed Spit It Out
Thoughts before listening: If this has Wait and Bleed on it then I love that song. Otherwise I know Slipknot is well respected in the metal scene but they were never my thing. I always thought the costumes were gimmicky. Review: I didn't like this music when I was listening to punk rock back in the day and I'm definitely not into it now. That being said, Wait and Bleed is still a banger and one of my favorites of the nu metal era. There are definitely some parts in the other songs that I can enjoy cause they do seem to have a knack for catchy choruses, but those are few and far between...and usually just one part of an otherwise annoying song. I especially hate the death metal vocals and raps that are used throughout. This just isn't for me.
Heavy but I can't get into the vocals.
I get what they're going for and they are doing it very well. Shame that what they were going for is making an anthem for the edgy, anti-social, unkempt guy whose main goal in life is driving his shitty beater and being a menace to his small town. It's not even that the music is bad, it is actually pretty good most of the time. It is hard and dirty, sometimes with other genres mixed in. And Wait and Bleed is still a banger. The big issue is just that the subject matter feels so juvenile, it makes it hard to take it seriously, even though it feels like Slipknot takes itself *very* seriously.
I think its a testament to slipknot that i dont totally hate this. But unfortunately its just one of those few genres i cant totally get behind the sound of. Well made but i would probablu never listen to again
I actually feel like there's a good album in here somewhere, but it's overly long, the record scratches feel extraneous at best, and the mix is very weird and kinda anti-heavy most of the time. As is, not really for me. Even if I do appreciate bits of it. Call it a 2.5 I guess.
not for me
If your idea of a good time is to have a grown man growl, bark and scream at you, Slipknot is a band for you! In an attempt to be creepy and terrifying, they succeed, though at times they are trying way too hard to be edgy and come across as ridiculous and laughable. I definitely laughed more while playing this album than anything else on this list, not because it was funny, but it was so "over the top" hilarious, if it was a parody or pseudo-hardcore death metal band, but I think these guys are serious. If your goal is to clear out the cool smoking kids from behind the school, audition for clown school or to piss off your parents and friends (if you have any), mission accomplished!
Pas
A bit loud for my taste
2 stars to recognise the skill required to play those instruments like that.
Not for me. Also, why do they need so many people in their band?
Nice to see variety here but holy shit, slipknot? A very acquired taste and I like metal.
Boring
2.3 I like the record scratching with the heavy music
For something I hated listening to, it wasn't that bad.
Was I a bit grumpy going into this, yes. Did this help, no. Really not my thing.
Not my kind of metal
i grew out of this style of music a long time ago, im sorry.
Angry young men in masks making a racket
First time hearing Slipknot other than "Before I Forget" on Guitar Hero III. I was never much into angry, expletive screaming music like this. Much less so now that I’m almost 49. On the very rare occasion the singer tried singing clean, it didn't sound bad. As it is, it's just difficult to relate to this kind of music. Favorite song: "No Life" maybe?
This was just straight up anger with barely any cohesion. It's very stereotypical nu metal and didn't age very well. The parts that did go hard didn't last long and I feel like their later music after this was much better.
This is what my kids listened to when they were in highschool. I didn't care for it then either
Screaming just isn’t my thing
Pretty interesting and pretty good for a debut. However, can't say I enjoyed it overall. Favourite Track: Wait and Bleed.
Ugh, this was a chore to get through. I know Slipknot say they're not Nu Metal and it's just a coincidence they started up at the same time as that genre kicked off, but c'mon - this album is straight up Nu Metal! 😠 If it came out 3 or 4 years earlier I might have been into it, but as it is, I found it mostly pretty cringe. Still - it's better than Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock. Fave track - eh, "[Sic]" let's say, though I have no particular enthusiasm for it.
From my perspective, this was already a cliche when it came out...
Talented musicians, but not my thing.
Heikko kolmonen, menee tässä kakkoseksi. Hyvä avausbiisi! Tempo saisi vaihdella enemmän monipuolisuuden lisäämiseksi, mutta liekö se mahdollista
At a certain age, this just doesn’t feel interesting anymore.
Just too much screaming/growling to enjoy this even a bit
I flatly think metal is way overrepresented on this list. I don't have much use for this. There's nothing much besides speed going on musically, I despise this kind of vocalization as always, and screeching "F- You All" is edginess for fourteen year olds.
Slipknot and their self-titled album are the logical progression of the nu metal genre. There is more focus on rhythms and grooves, pulling inspiration from the contentious rap metal genre and abrasive industrial metal. This is further emphasized with Slipknot having a DJ on deck, who opens the song Eyeless with a breakbeat. This is further emphasized with cleaner production than you would not hear in most metal. The dirty truth about Slipknot is that it's the kind of metal that really resonates with a lot of young teenagers and frat dudes who might consider it "the heaviest shit ever". I think that's okay. The pitfalls of Slipknot are thinking that it's innovative or even trying to be innovative. It's certainly not, but Slipknot makes a great case for how it integrates it's influences into their music. Corey Taylor's vocals borrow from the aggressive screaming found in hardcore. Meanwhile, the guitarists will occasionally employ riffs inspired from black metal or death metal. Turntablism had already been employed in metal and rock with Incubus, and of course the occasional rapping borrowed from recent hip hop circa 1998. The result is a pretty compelling amalgamation of nu metal on the edge of the new millennium, but nothing truly groundbreaking. I am sad to report that Slipknot, not unlike the Rolling Stones, are only worth listening to for their singles. For all their horror-inspired aesthetics and mega-brootal riffage, much of this album did not make me feel any strong emotions. Some would be more critical of this notion, as it would indicate a failing of artistic expression! I think it still has inherent artistic value, it just does not fall on me to determine that value. Enjoy metal!
Yhh. Tää on jotenkin harvoja yhtyeitä, joita en yhtään jaksa edes yrittää ymmärtää.
Ruido y gritos
I’ll be honest this is the first album I’m struggling to finish and so I can’t really comment on much of the songs on the back end of this project but this whole experience is a really tough listen. I fully respect Slipknot for the name that they’ve created for themselves as a heavy metal band, even when I was a kid I knew about Slipknot but I had never really heard their music before so I have to say you really have to have a specific taste for this sort of music. I do imagine this to be great gym music though which I might try out at some point but I’m just terms of finishing the album that will come at some other time as I can’t get through it now. I have to give props to the energy of the vocalist as he does not let up, I imagine their live shows are insane, and the instrumentation is fantastic from a technical standpoint as it’s so engaging and just packed full of what you’d want in a death metal album. Despite all this I just don’t find the songs enjoyable, like at all. I feel like you have to be in a very specific mood to listen to this type of music so trying to do so whilst going about my everyday routine was a bit difficult as I think I would’ve rather listened to nothing than have someone screaming in my ear whilst I’m trying to make my lunch. As I said I’ve got respect for the band and the sound they’re achieving it’s just personally not for me however I’m not going to give this a 1 as I can see why people like it as the music is interesting, it’s just not something I’d listen to that’s all.
I enjoy a lot of Slipknot, never did I think this would be a 2/5 album for me.
I do like some slipknot tracks, but this isn't their most enjoyable album. However I do find it impressive how a band of this genre were able to write an album that did so well commercially
Ufff,no puedo con ellos y menos por la mañana (PSP)
Meh
Technically talented, lyrically demented. Every good thing the music does is instantly negated by the objectionable lyrics. Clearly people like it and I'd assume it's done for theater, but it's just not for me. 2/5
Not for me
Gym hype
Oh boy
very violent and aggressive I think this would be called metal but could just be hard rock 2.5
I'm not the audience for this. Better than Marilyn Manson. I skipped through in a few minutes to hear the variety of vocal forms and buzzsaw guitars. I’ll only give 1 star if I think it’s atrocious with no musical value, but I can understand the appeal here for the modern thrash metaller.
Jeez these guys are angsty, they ok? Never listened to a slipknot album before. I want to say I would've liked this as an angsty teenager but I was an angsty teenager when it was released and I didn't like it then either... Remember them being quite shocking to people when they first got popular, but it just feels gimmicky now. I don't hate it, and wait and bleed and spit it out are good songs but not a big fan.
Highlights: \"(sic),\" \"Eyeless\" Opens strong, doesn't maintain. Powerful vocal and drum performances that don't know how to work together. Trying too hard to capitalize on stuff that worked for a few famous predecessors; they're totally incompetent at incorporating hip-hop, and the individual horror gimmicks drag on about twice as long as they should. Trying too hard with lyricism as well; ideas aren't unified or cohesive, are just for the rhyme or have no metrical quality at all, and don't seem to respond to or cooperate with the musical changes. Just one thing after another. Some good bones and timbres and more musical skill and awareness of songwriting than most nu metal, but unoriginal and sloppy from the composition to the execution. Goes nowhere.
pisti tunnetta peliin...siitä saa kakosen heh...aattelin että kun on nii vitun mainstream metal bändi että varmaan tykkäisin..yleensä menee niin...eipä ollu...liian lähellä 2000-lukua vissiin...estää nautinnon...+ uusi paska sana löydetty arvosteluista, gimmick, nähny liikaa viime aikoina, alkaa vituttaa tollane... scissors
Favourite song: Wait and Bleed
No ta.
i GET it. it's just not my thing. like, i get it. i do. but i'll never like it
Not my genre, but I can totally see how kids would love it and listen to it as they rage and are hormone filled. lol
Slipknot nails their vibe expertly, probably the pinnacle of the genre. But I don't have this kind of aggression in me needing expression. There's not a lot else on offer, like wit or variety, so overall I found this album pretty tedious. I guess I'm saying I don't like it but I respect it.
Slipknot blew up when I was already outgrowing my nu-metal phase, so my exposure to them was entirely through their radio singles and edgy imagery. Blending Korn's angst with Manson's shock rock and ratcheting up the white trash didn't do it for me then, and it doesn't do it for me now. It's not the worst album from this era on this list, but it doesn't deserve to be on this list over a Deftones album.
Slipknot is too far into the metal spectrum for me. Favorite track: Wait and Bleed
Ok
Well, I have a lot to say about this album. In the spirit of being charitable, I will say that the music itself is an interesting journey through various subgenres of metal including thrash, death, and speed metal while also experimenting with alternative and rap metal. Slipknot clearly know their genre well. I don't care for the lyrics. There is a lack of self-awareness that is present in other metal artists like Venom's 'Black Metal' album. It's over earnest, overwrought and seems like it's trying to be edgy for edge's sake. There is a way to express alienation, dissatisfaction with society, and overall anger, but this seems to go beyond expression into glorification. Also, the mixing on this album is atrocious. There is a lot going on musically with all of the various layers, but it come out muddled in the mix.
