Reviews (page 8 of 13)
I was reading Hemingway while this album was playing on the background. Really makes you feel like an expat somewhere in a small Mexican town some time in the 60s.
Looking at the songs on this one I know almost all of them before listening. Love Bob Marley but excited for this one because I haven’t listened to him in a long time. I accidentally listened to the 40th anniversary version of the album, which after googling was a little more than just remastered. That actually ended up being a sort of blessing in disguise because this version was different than the recorded versions I’ve come to know, and it made me appreciate it more. Noticing the clarity of Bob’s voice, the fantastic background singers, the slight differences from the versions I’m most familiar with. Overall, I really enjoyed it.
Who doesn’t like Bob Marley?
I kinda prefer the sound of more crudely produced reggae, but Bob Marley is just brilliant. This album is pretty outstanding with a ton of great songs and very little fluff.
Essential reggae
Relaxing reggae vibes, the best of its genre. 8/10.
Hey maaaannn
Great.
Classic. I mean we all know "Jamming", but there's a reason we all know "Jamming". (7 know/13 new)
Good album. I'm not typically a Reggae person but this was good.
REM was already popular when I “discovered” them my freshman year of high school. I hated them. This was when the automatic for the people album launched. Shiny happy people was awful. Stand was the most derivative thing I’d ever heard (as a young teenager). This album, however, was not bad. It embodies “college” rock.
Top of the line reggae album, with songs that make you feel warm and fuzzy
I be Jammin with this album
Great songwriting, great playing. Only The Heathen fell flat. And the string of classics on that second side is silly.
Brings me back to childhood. Very nice listen. Classic album. Saved 6/10 tracks to the playlist.
Prophet shit. I like the electric guitar, weird effects. Didn't realize one love was just people get ready. Woe to the downpressers (mf made up a word!?) - and believe they will eat the bread of sad tomorrow.
So Much Things To Say // Jamming // Three Little Birds // One Love
Such an old favourite album. Loved listening to it - little head bobs at work!! Singalong time.
Amazing album from the infamous bob marley. Never gave his music a real listen other than the popular stuff but this is actually really good. 4/5. Really enjoyed lyrics and instrumentals.
impossible to be in a bad mood while listening to this!
my first bob marley album! it was a super easy listen. 3.5
Bob Marley & The Wailers records exist in their own universe. Incredibly easy to listen to and at the same time incredibly powerful and hard hitting. A perfection of the sound and genre he helped to cultivate, with some more mellow/smoother tracks as the heavy hitters. A timeless classic, a staple of reggae. Best Tracks: - Natural Mystic - Exodus - Three Little Birds Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 9/10
Always great songs, just don’t know if I had ever listened to it as a whole album.
Love me some Marley
Probably the greatest reggae album of all time, certainly the best I’ve listened to. Favorite song is “One love/People Get Ready”, but from listening I discovered I really liked “Waiting In Vain” and “Turn Your Lights Down Low”. This album is fantastic vibes and if it were summer I very well might give this 5 stars. There’s no song on there I feel like I would want to skip the next time I listened to this album. Shoutout Marty for giving me this vinyl in perfect condition. B side is better than A side which I feel is pretty rare but really it’s all great. One love ✌️
Much more appreciation for this album comes from watching the Marley movie One Love. Seeing the backstory behind its creation and some of the songs makes it stand out as the king of Reggae albums and a monolith of Jamaican culture. This pack contains some of the most timeless hits ever put to record and never fails to put a smile on your face. Not perfect conceptually, but doesn't need to be and will always be there when you just want to groove and enjoy the morning. 8/10
Vibe Chill
One of the best reggae album of all the time. Peace and love, no war✌️ ☮️ ❤️🕊
The first half of this is just OK, then the second half (from Jamming onward) really rips. Rounding up from 3.5 to 4 stars because one of the songs I sing the most about my dog is inspired by Exodus.
Vilket liv
I want to lounge at a beach without a care in the world
Beautiful album with the hits
I haven't listened much to Bob Marley's music beyond what plays on the radio, so I don't know his discography well, but this certainly seems like a great showcase for Marley's songs and stylings. There are of course the massively famous singles on this album--curiously, all on the B side where the focus is more on love and spirituality--but I really enjoyed a number of other songs, especially the more political A side ones; "Natural Mystic", "Guiltiness" and the slow burn of "Exodus" are all interesting songs. There's something about the A side of the album that makes me think of a fascinating but fairly obscure movie I saw quite a while back, "Burn!" (from 1966, and starring Marlon Brando during his more politically active period). What a strong album, and a fun listening experience.
Some classics on here. Really close to being a 5.
The second side of this album is stacked after a slower start
Great reggae album
Good stuff
It's good, it's got one of my all time favourites (wait in vain) but I'm only giving it 3 stars. Oh, go on then. 4
4+/5
Great album with some iconic tracks. Reggae is just not my thing tho…
You know what Bob? I do like jamming too. Reggae isn't always my favorite despite best efforts but even when I wasn't vibing with the music I found the musicianship commendable.
ja man yuh dun know big chune
Although not a fan of reggae Bob Marley takes us onto another level. Classic album, nothing not to like. Marley has legendary status
Calming. A good one to re-visit during the dregs of winter when I need a transport.
meh
Easy to enjoy and packed full of well known tunes. Probably my favourite for the reggae albums I've had so far, although that might be because this is very mainstream – to be honest I don't really know. But I'd listen again certainly.
Understimated the raggie genre. Havent listened for it so much.. I liked it quite a lot.

I'm not sure Bob has any studio album that stands alone as a four star album, but his work as a whole is worthy of four, if not five stars. Since this is his best studio album, I'll give it four stars, though that's as much a representation of his whole body of work as it is the album.
When I was a young man I was averse to Bob Marley because his place in the young white guy cultural zeitgeist was so irritating. But now it’s been close to 20 years since I last stood in a room that had a Bob Marley poster in it, and I’ve finally let myself come around. I like Bob Marley now.
3.75
Yep, that’s some good stuff.
Excellent reggae from the master
Good stuff.
Ahhhh... a very good album. Not so fan or reggae but this was good. Of course, I knew some songs but, overall, great record.
Good album, good listening, was good background noise. Good!
The album is great! Love to hear it again and again!
Reggae done right
A classic of its genre - exodus jammin and 3 little birds outstanding
Great album. Tons of classic's.
Enjoyed glad to listen
This is a classic but, for me, it didn't quite do enough to get a 5. I like it a lot, but I don't love it.
Heard before
1st half not my thing. 2nd half slapped -Jamming - Exodus - three little birds
Cool 😎
I hope you like jamming too
*Chief Wiggum voice* JAMMING
Not bad,not too into reggae so I’m perhaps being too generous, more of a 3.5/5 tbh.
4.2
Such a nice and chill vibe, I like it!
A relaxing haze Simple lyrics and music profoundly moving
Some good bops. 3/4 playlist worthy tunes, worth another listen to get political themes
Really good album. Enjoyed it
This is the very first album I was given, and also the first time I’ve ever attempted to express my thoughts on music in written form. I’m pretty inexperienced when it comes to analyzing songs, much less an entire album, and that’s something I hope to grow in over the course of the next few months using this site. I can say I was surprised how many songs I was already familiar with, and getting to listen to them all in the full context of this record revealed how quintessential this is as a reggae album. From what I can tell this is THE reggae album, and I found it remarkably consistent and easy to listen to. I was tempted to give it a 5, but I don’t want to throw off my scale on the first entry.
Good reggae
Rating: 3.7
good
I wasn't super excited to get a Bob Marley album this morning, but I gotta say that this album was a jam overall. There were times when I felt like they could show more restraint with the combination of wah pedals and delay effects, but this album went by in a flash and there wasn't a single song that felt like it wasn't contributing 4/5
The 1970s in Jamaica were a turbulent time. Just before he was due to play at a peace concert Bob Marley, his wife Rita, and his manager were shot at and wounded. This led to him moving to London and recording this album. Side one is the stronger, mixing the spiritual and political, with powerful songs. Side 2 is more chilled and has the better known tracks. This needs to be listened to on the biggest sound system you have with bass turned up. Splifftastic!
Still not a huge fan of reggae, still a great album.
Track 1: Natural Mystic (8/10) As laid back as I imagined. Classic reggae sounds with a bit more of a rock feeling. Track 2: So Much Things to Say (8/10) I'll have to look up the meaning of this song, but it feels angry despite the chill atmosphere. It's interesting they're able to pull off that vibe. Track 3: Guiltiness (7/10) Pretty good track. Not much to say as it kind of blends in with the first 2 tracks. Track 4: The Heathen (7/10) I should have gotten stoned before listening to this lol Track 5: Exodus (9/10) Awesome, hypnotizing song. I loved the vocals on this one, and it's groovy as hell! Track 6: Jamming (10/10) Classic. Everything about this is perfect reggae and it's got a bit of funkiness to it as well! Track 7: Waiting in Vain (7/10) Another one I feel I would appreciate more with a few bong rips lol Track 8: Turn Your Lights Down Low (7/10) This is the most different song on the album. A full on slow jam about doing the nasty. Track 9: Three Little Birds (10/10) My favourite Bob Marley song, and by entension, my favourite reggae song. I love the guitar, the lyrics, the background singers and the message. Track 10: One Love/People Get Ready (9/10) Beautiful and uplifting. Overall: 8/10 I'm not a huge fan of reggae as I feel it can get same-y very quickly. For some reason, Bob Marley's music doesn't have that affect as often for me. This was an enjoyable listen, even if I didn't love the songs I hadn't heard yet. I look forward to the other Bob Marley albums in this list. Fav Song: Three Little Birds Least Fav Song: The Heathen
I feel like there are fewer standout songs than the other album I’ve listened to by them, but still great!
Man, is this a gospel album or what? If anyone else, even Dylan, mentioned the Creator as often as Marley does here, I’d be tuning out in no time. But…somehow he mixes the reggae guitar chunk that I don’t really like; religious overtones that I don’t really share; and lyrics that I can’t always understand…and he makes it awesome! And how many albums finish so strong on the back half? Marley could write cereal jingles and they’d be profound hits, I expect.
Never heard the album before. It takes a little while to get going, but the second half has many great songs.
Very good but not great. A few standouts and a few mediocre ones.
Truly iconic.
That was great. I generally like Bob Marley but feel like his albums have been difficult to get through so this was a nice surprise
Bob Marley was the perfect good mood chaser after Korn
Excellent example of the genre and great hits to boot. I enjoyed this while wandering the Charlotte airport
Most reggae is high floor low ceiling for me, but the hits on this one push it to a 4
This is what the Peter Tosh album wanted to be
Wow! What a great album, much better than the last one. 4 or 5 top tracks and their trademark laid back vibes. Again, most of the songs do sound the same, but I can forgive them that.
- Marley’s soothing voice - Little repetitively musically, but nice-sounding - Religious undertones - Revolutionary Reggae album
Great classic album. Something I've listened to in the past. Jamming is soooo good!
Only on my 2nd album and it's already one I've heard before! I love Bob Marley, my uncle and father are both Bob Marley fans, and all I can picture listening to this is my father blasting his records throughout the yard on a Sunday when I was a kid. Powerful, serene, really great music. 4/5~8.5/10
Thank goodness I had this on while troubleshooting mods, because it has the mellow energy I needed to ease my frustration.
Great album, and more than just reggae. Some great elements of rocksteady, soul, folk and even prog. It's hard to say Marley is underrated, but his albums as a cohesive listening experience might be.
My favorite Reggaeton group of all time released a great album. Bob Marley's lyrics never fail to provoke our happiest emotions. This entire album is a whole mood. Favorite Song: "One Love/People Get Ready".
A classic - he three little birds video made me lol - sets a relaxed mood for sure.
True classic
Solid reggae, I would spark one to this
Stay angry. Especially when people are shooting at you.
This was great, and too short. I listened to it twice. Four stars.
Some very good shit here. So probably harsh with my 4. Simpsons: Yes
more like a 3.5 nice chill mood album, can see how this influenced a genre so much
admittedly not my typical music, and not something i see revisiting on my own very much, but - i mean, it's a classic. rip.
i do need to be in the right mood to listen to ol' Robert but there are some stone cold classics here. i went in sort of knowing four of these songs and picked up a new one I liked, so that was cool. i wish exodus (the song) weren't so long but at least the rest just kinda flow by. this was another great Friday album, the generator has been killing it lately! favorites: exodus, jamming, waiting in vain, three little birds, one love/people get ready
added most of these to my reggae playlist
That's reggae! Very cool. A great album. I've never listened to it in full before. Now I remember why I actually like reggae. Peter Tosh's album from this series didn't convince me. But this album is great. I find it remarkable that the first 10 tracks only make up about half of the album. The last 2 12" tracks are great. The long version of Jamming in particular already has clear DUB elements, which I really like. 4/5
arguably, this is the most classic and well-renowned reggae record of all time. it’s relaxing, laid-back beats allow its listener to settle comfortably into the songs, with bob marley’s soothing vocals topping it all off. the emphasis on every other beat, omnipresent throughout this record, make it flow nicely, but with enough variation in each track as not to make it become boring.
Great album
Better than I thought, not my favourite genre-wise but good
Well, this made One Love a worse movie. Favourite track: The Heathen.
Classic
This is Bob's masterpiece. A musical description of utopia.
Survivalin jälkeen paras bob! 4/5
i’m not a big reggae guy at all but it’s so obvious how this is the best of the best
Great album with one of my favourite songs on it of all time. Jamming 8/10
not one song on here was that good
Love reggae, and Bob Marley is King! Awesome artist, band and songs.
4☆/5 08.19.2024
Really like this one. It’s a hot summer day!
This album is awesome. Bob Marley is great.
Reggae to a white audience ranges from quasi-blackface idiots saying "ya mon smoke some ganja" to elevating Bob Marley to the status of prophet to rejecting Marley as too mainstream, and then finally to recognizing Marley as a great figurehead in the genre. I'd like to think I have achieved the final status as a white audience member, and so I come to Exodus. Words cannot express how damned sick of "Three Little Birds" and "People Get Ready" I am. However, most of this album is a genius politically aware makeout album--no mean feat. Personally I prefer the melancholy Kaya and the angry boogie of Uprising, but this is pretty great album once you get past the greatest hits found on "Legend."
Some classics here. I didn't know I knew "Waiting in Vain". I guess I had never caught the title. Good song though. When Bob Marley sings the phrase "Three little birds", it drives me up the wall though. I just don't get that timing.
Very good
Roots Reggae. Man, Bob was such a gifted person. I adored this album, it was so warm and comfortable. It all blended together at one point, but I think that was a good thing. Nothing quite like it that I've heard. Light 4.5/5
4 maybe 5
3-4
When I was listening to track #3, I had to wonder what the fuzz is all about... the first 3 songs fit perfectly on the soundtrack of a '70s porn flick. Then Exodus starts playing, and the rest was just a lovely blur!
Very good incredible love bob
Pre-listening thoughts: Bob Marley is such an interesting pick. Like I feel like everyone knows Bob Marley’s music to an extent but have you ever met a Bob Marley super-fan? Maybe I’m just too young to know them but I’m curious about this album cause I never hear anyone talking about Bob Marley deep cuts. Post/during listening thoughts: The instrumentation on this is actually really nice and lush. Lots of different sonic layers which I appreciate. I think Bob Marley’s lyricism is the main reason why this record is on this list though. He really had a gift for conveying a message to the masses in a way that didn’t create fear around social/political/religious issues but rather simply brought awareness and sparked conversation. This is a great snapshot of the social issues in the 70s and Marley’s own turmoil surrounding them. It feels akin to listening to Vietnam protest songs where I feel like I’m catapulted into a time I never lived in. The actual music is obviously very reggae. I’m not the biggest reggae fan but this album was a pleasant listen. Reggae can feel very repetitive, but this album had such varied instrumentation and such captivating backing vocals I never got bored or tired of the sound. Album cover is kind of giving legend of Zelda ocarina of time on the N64 game cover. Exodus (song) is 7.5 mins?!?! Crazy bro. This album also has a bunch of Bob Marley’s most popular songs (Three Little Birds, Jammin, One Love), so I already knew a nice chunk going in. 8.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: yes I did Fav tracks: Natural Mystic, Exodus, Waiting in Vain Least fav tracks: n/a
Good
Great vibe. Whole album reminded me of a vacation. He’s always an artist I forget how much I like
Good
Righteous, indignant, uplifting

Jammin
Had this album in various forms for decades. It ages really well, still sounds fresh and engaging, a reggae classic
Muy bueno
An easy 4/5. It's not often I'll want to put this on, but if I want some reggae for whatever reason, this would be it.
Summer
Have never been a big reggae fan but this definitely challenged my tastes in a good way. Some very interesting layering and Bobs voice is incredible.
Some great songs, great story behind it too.
4.5!
Can’t go wrong w bob marley
"if you listen carefully now, you will hear" ✍️✍️✍️✍️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Definitely the best Bob Marley album, a cut above the others on this list. If for some reason I wanted to listen to reggae this would be the album I'd choose. As said before Bob Marley is an icon and the story around this album is similarly mythic. It is largely samey but I think that can be forgiven for the genre, and there is more diversity here than the other albums.
Is Exodus the only track that I actually know on this album? Ohhhhh we jamming! What are the first 4 tracks of this? Everything after that is FIRE!
Don’t worry be happy
Great album, chilled
This was my first album upon signing up. Not disappointed at all. Had to work today and thought I'd listen to it. Don't usually listen to reggae, but it took me to the beach, relaxing, enjoying some great music by a talented musician, all while having to work. So it made my day so much better!
This almost feels like a greatest hits album. The whole back half is most of their biggest songs. Though I'll admit I knew "Waiting in Vain" from the Annie Lennox cover first. It's pleasant to listen to (and sing along to the ones I know). It's interesting that the album starts out heavier and gets lighter as it goes on — going from politics and religious themes to love songs. It's usually the opposite. There's some great guitar on here ("Natural Mystic" and "The Heathen"). The background vocals and the horns are nice too. The sound is an interesting mix of traditional reggae but with some flourishes of 70s funk and soul sounds that wouldn't be out of place on a Curtis Mayfield or Isaac Hayes track. Since my main complaint with reggae is that it often sounds too formulaic, this was a nice way to keep the tracks sounding fresh. I do sort of wish the sequence of the tracks was mixed up a bit. Rather than having two distinct halves, where the love songs in the second half do somewhat blend together, interspersing them would have made for a more interesting listening experience. 4/5
There are some really good classic tunes on this album but Turn Your Lights Down Low was my favorite track that I hadn't heard before. Three Little Birds is THE Bob Marley feel good song!
4.5 Talk about getting into the groove! My last two reviews (In A Silent Way and Blue Lines) remarked on how easy it was to get lost in those albums. Feels kind of silly now that I am listening to this one. In addition to the hits, happy to have heard So Much Things To Say.
Great groove through entirety of album. Nice vibe with meaningful lyrics.
Bob is always welcome
Classic. Not my usual thing but really enjoyed it. Some absolute classics but it’s all good.
3.8 - It's good. I don't think I love it like others do, find it a bit too repetitive in parts, but its good easy listening
Pretty much what I expected, though I can't say I've listened the album previous. Individual tracks were wonderful even some I had never heard before. As an album, it never got a sense of cohesion.
I'd give it 4.5 if I could. I already own this album, but it's one I'm always happy to listen to again. The songs are simple musically, but the sheer depth of feeling in the performances really elevates them. Love it.
Something about this music. I love it.
Jammin
Schöne Musik, die gute Vibes verbreitet. Kann man sich auch heute noch anhören.
Smokey college room soundtrack- this might as well be the ‘best of Marley’ compilation. Little bit repetitive and formulaic, but super pleasant. I feel like there’s a bit of the 90s lens on this to get past.
I enjoyed this very much and the first album of Bob Marley and The Wailers I've listened to besides Legend.
Lyrics get a bit repetitive but is very light listening
Mellow vibes, y'all. What's not to like about these jams. Didn't know religion was so central to his music, but the political activism is welcomed.
Marley's music is just good.
Vibes
Fun stuff
It sounded just as good as the first time I heard it and a white kids University dorm room while smoking weed in my teens
Relaxing music - only 4 stars, because there are better albums from Boy Marley
groovy baby!
I'm not really a huge fan of reggae in general, but how could you possibly dislike this? Some absolute classics, and the remaining tracks are more than good enough.
Way better than I expected
Enjoyed the album
We're jammin mon!
My guy bob
Should’ve listened to this album a long time ago. Almost like Nirvana where I’ve heard all the classic hits so many times, but not what surrounded it on the album, and being really impressed. Great sunny day headphone listen with positive chill vibes.
Reggae needs to catch me in the right mood usually, which is just what happened this morning. Splendid listen, and I wouldn't be surprised if I started becoming more of a Reggae fan eventually.
Yep I get it Bob Marley is great. Enough with his albums though.
I'm only sort of casually familiar with Bob Marley. I mean I know all the songs that everyone knows and have heard a few of his albums randomly over the years. I've always really dug his music but never felt the need to go out and actively listen to it all. I really liked this album, it's a total mood album. Always glad to hear Jamming, that's probably been my favorite song of his since I first heard it. The rhythms in his music are so great. I don't know what it is but it just makes you sort of relax a bit, and that's funny to say because a lot of his songs are about such serious topics - poverty, oppression, spirituality, revolution, and just general struggles of Jamaica. Great music to sort of just have on in the background when you're doing other things but still fun to sit and really listen. This specific album has a lot going for it - great sound and production, interesting instrumentation, brilliant lyrics and signing. It's super tight but sort of loose and free at the same time. I love how some of it is almost like a reggae/funk fusion. 3.75/5
Classic stuff
Laid-back but complex. Just a solid album overall.
I was familiar w/ Bob Marley, and own his compilation “Legacy”. Fully 1/2 of this album is on “Legacy”, so I had a high degree of familiarity with those, which comprise some of the best (and best-known) reggae songs from the 70’s. So what of the rest of it? Well, obviously, the best songs made it to Legend, but the rest of it is good. If you wat to own 1 reggae album, "Legend" gets the edge over this. But this is still very solid, easy 4/5
Pretty strong side B
Sempre good vibes e musiche reggae che mi mandano nell'iperuranio. Lo amo
really wanna listen to this watching the sunrise and tokin it up. really enjoyed jamming and so much things to say. waiting in vain was also good, albeit lyrically more so than musically.
that's a classic
Hazy college memories
All you need is... joint?
This is genuinely about the only reggae stuff I can tolerate. It’s an excellent album, and I really enjoy it.
Changed my mind about reggae!
This album grew on me. I'm not super into reggae, but I found myself starting to really dig the sound in the latter half. The beginning felt a little samey but improved as it went. 7/10 Would I listen again? Probably, but I'd definitely need to be in the mood for it.
I knew the 4 popular songs: Exodus, Jamming, Three Little Birds, One Love. Interesting to learn that there was an assassination attempt on Marley not long before this album, that there was such political upheaval in Jamaica and Marley was caught up in it.
My enjoyment of this album really underscores what a shame it is that Marley's music has been high-jacked as the soundtrack for every college stoner.
Was surprised by how few of these were ruined by becoming commercial jingles (and it's really only 'One Love,' which is still so catchy it's no wonder it became the vehicle for promoting Jamaica as a place to visit.) Enjoyed the songs I didn't know as well (Natural Mystic, Exodus), and was surprised to enjoy the familiar ones despite their over exposure in college dorm rooms and on any beach sporting palapas.
A lot of people know Bob Marley as the “one love” and “peace” icon. In reality, a lot of his songs are very political and spiritual. This album has a lot of his more well known hits that fit into the peace-and-love category. Still great songs, I just prefer some of his other albums. This one is a bit overproduced.
The album for Bob Marley fans.
Not really my top genre but the second half of the album is packed with familiar hits.
This was pretty okay! There was never a moment that I wished I wasn’t listening to this, but I also wasn’t particularly drawn in by any songs. I did enjoy the few songs that I knew.
Truly one of the greats
Never has an artist captured the sound of a setting like Bob Marley. I swear listening on a cold rainy day actually warms me up. Such positivity and optimism in his music.
Great album. Loved listening to this
Good old Bob Marley! Some perennial favorites on this one but also some that were new to me.
I another great Marley album, ran thru it a couple times and I really enjoyed it. A few of my favourite Marley tracks are on this one. Three Little Birds, Jamming and One Love though Natural Mystic and So Much Things to Say are also awesome. Honestly, the only track I don’t really care for is Turn Your Lights Down Low, there’s something about a Marley sex track that just doesn’t work. I don’t know, great stuff otherwise. 4 stars
very nice 4 star
Incredibly chill and welcoming music. Not always my cup of tea, but the instrumentation by the New Wailers is incredibly delicate and balances out Bob's impassioned voice. Definite religious inspiration shining throughout the entire project, which I can totally dig, and can understand from a man who just survived an assassination attempt. Well worth listening to.
Movement of Ja people! Bob is a reggae god
An extra star for Bob because it upset Jim so much
You would have to be heartless not to enjoy the dub reggae of Bob.
Generally a pretty solid album: a defining and great example of its genre. Marley's uniquely captivating lyricism and vocals are no-doubt the carrying feature, but the instrumentation is adequate too (if a bit uncreative at times). Groovy. Favourite Track: Waiting In Vain Specific Rating: 3.6/5
Such a fun album. It put me in a great mood on this snowy day.
The Rasta's best album. A bit back loaded but I believe that was done intentionally. Great to listen to at a protest or at a cabana on the beach.
There's so much things I could say about what this album makes me think about, from the fact that Marley was nearly assassinated before a concert against political violence, to my feelings about Marley's popular image is these days... But la-la-la-la, lemme just stick to the review: this is my favorite Wailers album. From all the hits on the back end to stuff I feel isn't paid much attention popularly up front. It's good to chill to, it's good to think about your spirit to... It's both sides of Bob, right here. And seriously, I'm doin' y'all a favor not writing a whole damn essay about...
haha funni weed man :) (But seriously, this is an awesome distillation of what makes reggae such a compelling genre.)
As an entire album, it’s a really nice 4, but I think tracks 6-10 by themselves are a 5. I just wasn’t really vibing with the first 4 tracks too much; they felt a little slow, a little too lyrically dense, a little preachy, and not quite “poppy” enough. Track 5 started to bring in the energy, but it was about 2 or 3 minutes too long. Track 6 and onward, though… hoo. That’s really good stuff. Big difference from the front half and the back half; the more melodic instrumentation on the latter half of the album just sucked me in and had me FEELING that music really deeply. I think the incredibly solid (but still just kind of OK for me) first half does drag it down to a 4 for me, but it’s no lower than that. Really good stuff here.
We've had a few from Bob at this point, and while I don't know if we need all of the ones we've gotten, this one feels important. Started slow for me, but the back half really picked up, with a couple recognizable hits among the comfortable reggae jams. It clicked for me on this one that yeah, Bob Marley really was a great artist and not just a stoner messiah. Favorite tracks: Jamming, Waiting in Vain, Three Little Birds, One Love. Album art: Probably the weakest part of this album, it's just the name. The text/font is cool though, and the colors work. But not very interesting. 4/5
A few belters on here. Waiting in Vain is an all time favourite, and Turn Your Lights Down Low would fit nicely on any sexy-time mixtape.
Classic.
Only knew the hits before which are obviously great, but the rest more than holds up to that mark
This album has some of Bob Marleys most well known songs, ones that have become genre defining in their own right. Though the full album can sound a bit repetitive at times, the genuine joy a track like Three Little Birds or One Love produce demonstrate exactly why Marley's music and legacy have endured for so long.
This will always remind me of John's tape and making out on the bench seats in his car. Awkward now since Bob Marley is pro-Zionism. Oof.
Not a bad chill album. I'll probably come back to this when i'm feeling like listening to relaxing music.
So good to listen all the way through. Art that makes me proud
Good album.
Great blend of Reggae and rock. The back half of the album is my favorite, but the front half doesn't miss either. The opening two tracks pull you in to it. Turn Your Lights Down Low is my favorite track on the album 3.5/5
Okay.
Fun, chill album. Love me some reggae and this is 100% classic. No one does it like Bob Marley! Four stars.
Nice chill album, cant go wrong with Bob Marley. I can never be stressed listening to this style. Low volume and groovy. 4 stars
Classic
Not my favorite from Bob & the Wailers but still pretty great.
Superb. I've been really into reggae recently, and Bob is obviously one of the greatest of all time. Rest in peace, homie.
Chilled sounds, strong messages
Reggae classic
Fabulous album. A classic staple for a native Californian life. Really good sunshine vibes.
Very relaxing offbeat music. Good songs.
I'm here for the hits, the rest are ok. Reggae doesn't move me, I'm afraid the songs mostly sound the same to my ear. But on a warm summer day, it can't be beat.
A classic , every Marley album should be here.
You could include every Marley album on this list. Exodus is full of great songs. I wonder if Toots and Tosh made this list?
A classic and quintessential reggae album!
So chill✌️
Jätte swag
Yeah, this is definitely good (reggae) music. Fun to listen to at least, and a nice moderate energy level. Lyrically there were some poignant songs on here, but I wasn’t focused enough to really soak it in. Musically nothing upset me on this album.
Very nice album, introduced me to a bunch of new songs and had just a very nice vibe to it in general :)
- so uplifting and inspiring - beforehand, i knew of jamming and three little birds - “every little thing is gonna be alright…”
Nice, proper vibesy
I don't think I've ever consciously listened to this album. Obviously heard Jamming and Three Little Birds! It feels immediately recognisable to me, and very energetic AND laid-back. I guess that's because so much electronic music (especially in dub, dubstep & drum and bass) is influenced by it or samples it. Enjoyed very much, solid.
Waiting in vain was the best track I'd not heard before. Strong from start of finish!
Great! I really like "Jamming"
Nice vibe!
Nice and peaceful album. Has a surprising amount of depth to it
This is my second wailers album after catch a fire which I thought was excellent, this was equally as good but you can see how the style had evolved, obviously a few more well known songs on this one, I wasnt into reggae much before this but enjoying it a lot more now
Good, reggae music makes me feel good.
Nice way to start the early-morning drive to work
I've never really delved into Marley, just heard a ton of stuff through osmosis. I enjoy the performances on this, the right blend of relaxed and tight. What else is there to say that hasn't been said before? Favorite tracks: "Jamming", "Exodus"
This was my first proper listen to a full Bob Marley album, and it did not disappoint. Exodus flows brilliantly from start to finish. The songs work so well together, balancing political messages with warmth, groove and melody. There is a laid back confidence throughout, but also real purpose in the writing. Three Little Birds is one of my favourites. It is simple, uplifting and timeless. The whole album has that same easy feel, yet there is depth beneath the surface. The rhythms are infectious and the songwriting is strong across the board. I came into this curious and came away genuinely impressed. A great album that fully lives up to its reputation. Favourite song: Three Little Birds Least favourite: None that stood out negatively Album artwork: Instantly recognisable and perfectly in keeping with the era and the sound
Very very good, but I got a little bored by the latter half. Despite that, Bob Marley is iconic and influential.
Nice album. 4/5
4 great album. Some the the first songs were just ok
Great album and an enjoyable break from the "classic rock" genre. Not my everyday go to, but it was a nice listen at work.
Loved it
Very good.
Good album. Best Track: Three Little Birds
it’s kinda wild how many songs i know from this album without ever owning it or playing it myself
Great album from and this legend. Starred several songs. Puts me in a summer mood.
I generally feel pretty neutral toward reggae, but this was a very solid album with more complexity than I expected.
Bobby
Great album
The real bob marley
You can’t not like Marley when he comes on.
This was the perfect album to start this journey with as Bob Marley is someone I hold a great deal of respect for but have avoided actually listening to most of my life. There's an entire obnoxious culture industry built around him, like many great artists and thinkers, that strips away any actual meaning and message of there work in favor of something easily marketable (in this instance, phone cases for the most annoying stoner you knew in middle school). That aside, this was a great introduction to his music. It will require a few lessons and a deeper research to understand the full meaning behind a few of the songs but in general it conveys some very strong emotions. As much as i hate to resort to a word like 'vibe' already, it really is the thing that comes to mind when listening to this. This is music from a man who believed in a better world and you can feel it genuinely trhough the songs. Wish i had more to say but reggae is obviously not my forte so I'll just say I'm happy to have already broadened my horizons.
Solid album. Reggae isn’t always my jam, but Bob Marley is always Jamin’ for me. 4/5
Class - could go on forever and not lose quality.
Great reggae album, the backbone of the classic compilation album "Legend".
Say what you want about the reggae rhythm. Bob Marley is a poet, telling wonderful stories.
Good vibes all around
Great album. The definitive Bob Marley Experience. Great reggae music to bop your head to
I remember being a little kid and always asking my parents to check out a kids "world music" CD (maybe Putumayo) and it had Three Little Birds on it - that's the only one I remember, but I would always want to listen to that one. Gave up on listening to this a couple of times because of the weaker beginning, but there's a lot of meat in the latter half. Obviously some big hits, but I also really like the more R&B/pop inspired songs too.
I'm not really a reggae connoisseur but I know what I like and I love this. Expansively produced with Marley wailing triumphantly over everything; music of love and joy. The type of album you can listen to over and over. Best song: One Love / People Get Ready
What can I say? Brilliant album. I was never a huge Bob Marley guy but the man was a genius and he pieced together excellent music.
super chill but not really my vibe
Knew more songs than I thought I would. Good grooving music.
Great reggae
Quintessential reggae.
The best!
