Reviews (page 6 of 8)

You can tell it's from the 60s. Lot's of harmonies, but some experiemtal stuff as well.

It's very okay. There are some tracks that are fun - the opener and the sci fi one, and. A lot that's just very well produced and just okay. Feel a little like this is a critics band, not one that's that enjoyable to listen to. O followed this with Boney M and enjoyed the latter far more.

Pretty solid

A solid 60s/70s feeling album with some gems

Relatively good but never really captured me like I was hoping

Fine folk-rock with some psychedelic bits thrown in. Can be pleasant, can be annoying ("Mind Palace" sticks out). Very middle of the road, despite my usual enjoyment of David Crosby. Favorite tracks: "Thoughts and Words", "My Back Pages", "Why"

Two Byrds albums in a row? Well ok then. So I just came off listening to "Younger Than Yesterday" by The Byrds. And let me tell you, after listening to their experimental album "Fifth Dimension" the day before, I was somewhat relieved that this one didn't make me feel like I was in the middle of an acid trip. "Younger Than Yesterday" is an album that showcases The Byrds' unique blend of folk, rock, and psychedelia. It's like they took a bunch of musical genres and threw them into a blender, and what came out was an eclectic mix of 60's style rock n roll. The album features some of the band's most popular tracks, including "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star," which is the perfect song to listen to while doing your air guitar routine in the mirror. And "My Back Pages" is a timeless classic that makes me feel like I'm wearing a tie-dye shirt and smoking a doobie. What I like most about this album is how it manages to be experimental without being too out there. It's like they were testing the waters with "Fifth Dimension" and then realized they needed to come back down to earth a bit. And boy, am I glad they did (because I don't think my brain could handle a Sixth Dimension). Overall, "Younger Than Yesterday" is a groovy album that will make you want to dust off your bell-bottoms and dance around like it's the Summer of Love. It's like a musical time machine that transports you back to the '60s, minus the questionable fashion choices. So if you're looking for a good time, put on this album and let The Byrds take you for a ride.

This is the third Byrds album we've had on the list so far and I've enjoyed them all. They consistently deliver 60's folk rock with psychedelic vibes, beautiful vocal harmonies and sometimes a silly song about UFOs. This one is particularly easygoing and light. But it’s not simplistic. There are some mysterious, moody songs too. And great guitar work throughout.

Skemmtilegri plata en ég bjóst við.

Rock clásico. Suave

HL: “My Back Pages”, “Mind Gardens”, “Renaissance Fair” if bonus tracks count, then “Lady Friend” Nice 1st Byrds album, easy-breezy folk rock, and then the backwards guitar in “Mind Gardens” jolted me out of that pleasant reverie 😬 Their version of “My Back Pages” is probably my favourite Byrds song. Might be 4 another day, but let’s say 3 stars since there were a few songs this listen that went in one ear & out the other March 11, 2023

Amerikai Bítlisz/Pop Dylan fiúbanda. Néhol idegesítő, de egyébként kellemes háttérzene.) 1-2 újrahallgatós számmal.

Was probs a banger in 67. Today it's just alright

First time listening. A quick listen at just over 29min. This is a good and consistent album. The Byrds combined country, psychedelic, rock, pop, and jazz into a profile all their own. There's a sophistication in their instrumental interplay that I find enjoyable. It sounds fairly simple at first but a closer listen reveals it to be pretty intricate. Doesn't mean I'll revisit often.

Happy to give this a close listen. Interesting timing because this could be heard as a "response to Sgt. Pepper" album, but this one came first! Has the distinctive Byrds sound, but really not much else to recommend. A rather dull experience, indicative of how The Byrds don't have enough great songs to fill up a greatest hits album.

Sympathique et agréable. M’a rappelé les jeunes Beatles

Den gode 60’er rock ting, uden at blive for trivielt, lidt psyk, country

25th. 20 days travelling. Saturday at Shakeen’s farm. 6am. Woke up thinking of Jenna

Some highs and fewer lows here, with most of it being inbetween. I quite like So you wanna be a rockstar, My Back Pages and Everyone's been burned. Really dislike Mind Gardens, and to a lesser extend the end of CTA 102 (what the hell was that?) and Why.

I've come to adore David Crosby, but this was too dated and too jangly for my tastes. I did enjoy the occasional dashes of mysticism, though.

Musik man blir glad av.

It was ok - missing Mr Tambourine Man though

Not unpleasant to listen too, but you can have too much jangly 12 string, whacked lyrics and reversed music.

It's nice, I liked it. However, it doesn't really stand out for me.

Second time listening to this album, and my opinion is largely the same. This is my favorite Byrds album so far, and My Back Pages is my favorite track

First time through that second track, Have You Seen Her Face, sounded like The Beatles. Second time through though I could hear the Byrds as I became more familiar with their sound. CTA - 102 is interesting and my fave track would be The Girl With No Name.

Yeah, this was fine - nothing massively captivating, but pleasant enough. Fave track - I liked the oddness of "C.T.A. 102" - especially the fake backmasking. 😆 "My Back Pages" is catchy, too, and uses the album title as a lyric.

Gentle songs combined with some experimental and at times whining material.

Good album. Had some really interesting songs and parts to it

3/5. An okay pop rock psyche album. Some songs seem pretty evolved while others are trying way too hard to be psychedelic.

Good record

Fav song: Thoughts & Words

Some interesting songs on it. Some of it quite experimental but not my thing. Overall interesting look into early? psychedelic rock Saved tracks: Have You Seen Her Face, It Happens Each Day, Don’t Make Waves

has a very 60's sound (makes sense!)

Gitaren i den renessansesangen (?) va jævlig kul

Interesting. Below. Like the horns.

This is a weird mix of pretty generic meh 60's rock and some absolutely great songs, such as Thoughts and Words. I was expecting this to be a little more country than it was, which was a nice change of pace, but I'm going to have to be reasonable and say that the album overall was pretty mixed, earning a three star. Seriously though, Thoughts and Words rivals the Beatles in quality.

Not entirely my thing. Some of the more psychadelic stuff missed the mark. Enjoyed some more than others, but overall an enjoyable listen.

Jangle but backwards. Elgnaj.

In 1963 Nikolai Kardashev proposed that the then-unidentified radio source could be evidence of a Type II or III extraterrestrial civilization on the Kardashev scale.[3] Follow-up observations were announced in 1965 by Gennady Sholomitskii, who found that the object's radio emission was varying;[6] a public announcement of these results on April 12, 1965, caused a worldwide sensation.

Very interesting production, can see how it would be influential. It just sounds a bit sloppy. Really like mind gardens tho - prob because it sounds like TISB. 3 stars I guess

I'll keep the review short and sweet, much like Younger Than Yesterday itself. I really enjoy the late 60's psychedelic folk-pop-rock that The Byrds helped pioneer. It's laid back, but never boring. 'So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star' is a finely written song. On this particular album they also do very weird stuff like 'C.T.A.-102' which I do not care for. Otherwise it's easy listening, solid stuff.

The Byrds were able to write some mighty fine pop tunes; "So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll", "Rennaisance Fair", "My Back Pages" and more. Jangly, pretty and solid. But nothing groundbreaking og breathtaking. When they try something new and different, as on "C.T.A. - 102", The Byrds seem to break their wings. Younger Than Yesterday is fine, it's short and there are plenty of great tunes. It's just not remarkable.

Great vibes

Enjoy the earlier albums and songs better.

Byrds come together nicely on this one. Real pleasant but the best is yet to come

classic californian sixties rock

Okayish

Jeebs, it is another one from the summer of love. What the fuck is C.T.A - 102? Renaissance Fair is a fucking banger though. It has some bangers, but I really ain't feelin it that much. 3/5

Not really my style. I'm sure it was awesome back in the day.

Buen álbum. No es de mi estilo

This is probably the first album I can say actually feels influential! I can feel the beats and rhythms are very similar to ones I've heard in more modern 90s and 00s songs. Would I listen to it again and did I finish the whole album? No. But this definitely deserves to be on the list.

There are some fantastic songs on here, 5-star quality, but there’s also some weirder ones that I didn’t care for. It balances out to a three.

The Byrds are very good at covers, and not much else. Only bumped to a three because of My Back Pages.

Mellow listening. I enjoy the late 60s vibes and the lyrics, but there weren’t any stand out tracks for me with this one. Solid listen but won’t return to this album in particular.

run of the mill Brit-pop

Very easy listening and a nice representation of 60s pop. None of the songs on here have that bite or stand out as much as their main competitors (Beatles, Rolling Stones etc.), but as a whole its pleasent and gives a welcoming insight to thebrest of Byrds discography.

I thought this album was okay. Feels very of the time and I feel like there was a lot of stuff going around back then that I would go for before this album. The experimental elements were by far the most interesting part of the whole album for me as rare as they were. I kind of wish they focused more on that aspect of what they were doing.

It was alright! Really love "Have You Seen Her Face", "Everybody's Been Burned", and that awesome cover of "My Back Pages". Can definitely tell they were in the same ecosystem as The Beatles and The Beach Boys (and obviously Dylan). But I don't think they were quite as tight as any of those contemporaries on the songwriting, composition, or performance front. Had a few other problems with it. It struck me as a little weird to name an album after a lyric in a cover song, but maybe there's some meaning there that I'm missing. Also I felt like the playing wasn't super tight; I can point to moments on every instrument (maybe except the vocal) that were pretty out of time or sloppy. And not a fan of that super far stereo spread with drum overheads faintly in the right and guitars running completely uncontested in the left (they definitely aren't the only band in this era to pan everything to oblivion but it still bears mentioning). And I don't think they quite pulled off the psychedelic effect they were going for for some of the songs from a musical or texture standpoint. Honestly only really liked about 3 or 4 songs on the album, the rest were okay at best. This one's probably a low 3 for me; some moments were pretty nice but don't think I'd love sitting through the whole thing again.

I enjoyed listening to this album! It was fun to have on in the background. Some of the songs are undeniable, and I especially loved their Dylan cover. They suffer somewhat from the same affliction that so many bands had at at the time, which is being difficult to distinguish from being a b-side track on a Beatles record. But of those bands (there are many), I found these guys to be pretty fun, and at times more experimental. when they lock, they locked! Enjoyed my time with this record.

Tricky. I really like the sound, and some of the songs are fantastic, but there was also some stuff I didn't care for, like the style of the repetition in a few tracks and the alien voice(?) in "C.T.A."

I liked this more than expected

No-one can deny this is the sound of the 60s. At first I felt that I was being assaulted by ‘pleasant’. I longed for ‘Turn. Turn Turn’ my favourite Byrds song which is both familiar and great and reduces me to tears every time I hear it. Then the classic three minute summer of love pop songs, although they continued, began to be speckled with melancholy and ruefulness. Yes there is the familiar sound of trippy psychedelia, but the songs with messages and story and underlying protest are the ones that stay with me and give the album its gravitas. Although I’m going off to play Turn Turn Turn now…

This album is very evocative of a specific time and place. Very Laurel Canyon. I wish I lived in the Hollywood Hills in the late 60s. I imagine the Byrds, the Mamas and the Papas, The Beach Boys, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, etc. hanging out, getting stoned and making music. I would hope to avoid the Manson Family, though.

I don't know. Didn't hate it. There's some decent songs by a group of very good song writers. They each grew and became better as they went on.

Ok so this is the third album I'm getting from the Byrds. I didn't know them before this but I'm obsessed with the bands they were heavily inspired by and also covered extensively. So this was the beginning of them writing more of their own stuff and it does sound cool so far but just not ground breaking/very similar to Beatles work of the time. This is their best album I've listened to so far. There are more original moments like alien voices at the end of C.T.A. haha. Everybody's been burned sounds like a mash up between Nick Drake and Beatles which is really nice. In the end I got a bit bored by this album so it's still staying at a 3 maybe a Byrds album will come up and inspire me a bit more...

Pleasant enough. I was cooking for most of it and I don't think I was paying much attention. Still, I liked it, no complaints really.

Very nice. I do like the Byrds a lot. It did get a little similar toward the end but it's all good stuff.

It’s good. 3/5

Definitely was meant to be listed to while high. Pretty fun songs, one of them was like featuring Minions?

Was quite nice

Ok album, sounds quite dated now but wasn't unpleasant

favourite song: so you want to be a rock 'n' roll star least favourite song: mind gardens this is the second album by the byrds ive had and it started a lot stronger than the last one. however it slowed down and got fairly boring after this initial boost.

I'll admit this has been my favourite Byrds album as a whole package. Their other albums have better songs but this delivers a listenable consistency I didn't think the band were capable of.

I love the Byrds, but this album isn't one of my favorites. It's good, but I'm not a fan of the David Crosby compositions - they remind me of the songs I like least in the CSNY catalog - that sort of moody feel. Overall it's a good album and I'm sure in 1967 it was relatively cutting edge, but for me it's a 3 star album.

Good Rock

Nice vibes and vocals! A bit of experimenting too. I really like the guitar in this. I've been listening more 60s music lately so this album came at a good time! (ofc there will be many many more but still) Great album! Overall 3,5/5 for me

Didn’t like it as much as the first byrds album we did, liked the singles and more straight ahead tracks best, but still enjoyable. Closer to 3.5 than 3.

3.4 - A good but unexceptional piece of 60s psychedelia. Most of these studio tricks I’ve heard done much better by the Beatles or Jefferson Airplane.

it's fine

boomer bloat and indulgence interspersed w/ jangly, lively instrumentation and three-bowls-deep console trickery; sounds nice enough, I guess?

Far out man

It's OK and it's nice to hear the emergence of country rock but it doesn't have anything that grabs me.

Another album more interesting as an experiment of its time an an influence on future music of the era. Doesn’t have the same staying power as other genre bending stuff like Sgt Pepper or Donovan.

Some really beautiful songs on this album. Love the harmonies.

Pleasant but forgetable.

Pretty fun, far out stuff

Mostly pleasant, the chiming Rickenbacker compensating for the dustiness that comes with some a dated artefact as Younger Than Yesterday. But halfway through something odd occurs - Everybody's Been Burned sounds startlingly modern, Thoughts and Words could be one of the tributaries to 1980s jangle-pop and Mind Gardens is only two steps away from the twisted, psychedelic modal folk of 'wyrd Albion'. None of this quite elevates it, but Younger Than Yesterday is a welcome, listenable time machine to days of future passed.

Good album, only got to listen once today, will have to listen again to see if it’s still a 3

pretty good!

"It's deeeeecent, tell em lad" - Joe Hart.

Was ok, geen wow gevoel.

A more confident Byrds album as they're more comfortable with their sound, from the folk and baroque pop of the first 2 albums to the psychedelia of 5th Dimension, even incorporating slight country ("Time Between", "The Girl With No Name") that'll evolve more in coming albums. Just as with 5th Dimension, they try a little too hard with production techniques (like annoying mixing and weird studio effects) that work against their favor. My second biggest gripe is that the songs feel weaker or more incomplete, with many feeling a bit unsatisfying. Songs go by fast, with only "Mind Gardens" going much more than 3 minutes. This makes for a very versatile and fun album to listen to, and compliments nicely with the rhythmic and soothing vibe, especially for tripping. My favorites tend to be the entrancing psychedelic dreamy songs, which fortunately dominate the album. Personally, I enjoy it more than my criticisms, and I'd listen to this album again with the bonus tracks. Favorites: Have You Seen Her Face, Renaissance Fair, Everybody's Been Burned, Why

My first repeat of an artist. I like this band. Sounds so similar to the Beatles. I like the other album a little better than this one, but still good

This album is pretty good. Folk rock is a style that's blended especially while by the Byrds. I love how jangly the guitar sounds on this record. Time Between has some great country finger pickin' guitar.

Not really my thing, but enjoyed the spacy, psychedelic cuts.

The Byrds are one boomer act I have little experience or use with, so this was… not bad. It sounds like watered down Dylan by way of the Monkees, and that’s fine, but not something I’d go out of my way to listen to. Still, not a bad way to spend a half hour. C

I’ve sorta herd of this band… The album opens with so you want to be a rock and roll star it’s a good song that works really well as the opener ( also the fact that I think I’ve herd the song before helped out on this one). Have you seen her face is a very good 60’s pop song I love the guitars on here. C.T.A-102 is a folky little tune with a wired electronic instrumental break, I really don’t think I like this one ( the alien like noises at the end are funny though). Renaissance fair is a really good song I love the instrumental work on this, the lyrics are a bit filler but it’s not a problem. Time between is a very short folk song I don’t love it but it’s not bad. Everybody’s been burned is pretty good I love the creepy guitars that accompany the song. Thoughts and words has really cool verses and when the song gets all warped it is awesome but i’am not a fan of the chorus. I love the guitars in mind garden it’s a proper 60’s sounding drug psychedelic song ( if you get what I mean). My black pages is a banger ( all Bob Dylan songs sound better when he isn’t singing) and the Byrds are best at doing that. The girl with no name is a nice little song but I didn’t find anything all too special. The album closes with why it’s a good single but a good album closer…no. Eh it’s very eh 3/5.

best byrds album

A solid album that leans toward typical mid-'60s rock ("So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star," which has a nice bit of trumpet in it and "Have You Seen Her Face," which features some fine guitar playing) and more hippy-oriented fare ("Time Between" sounds like it could be a Grateful Dead track), with a little flirtation with the psychedelic thrown into the mix ("Thoughts & Words," & "Mind Gardens"). Not bad at all.

A lot more psychedelic than I prefer

So You Want to be a Rockstar is a great song - simultaneously bright an cynical. And the other tracks aren't bad for this style and time.

It was ok

Liked this more than I had expected, given what I know of the Byrds

I think I like this one better than the other Byrds' albums, part experimental and more progressive.

Sweet album, but kind of empty.

Generally fine, good in places (So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star) and terrible in places (Mind Gardens), and twangy in places (The Girl With No Name). Overall a little more interesting and enjoyable than not. Not entirely convinced it deserves a place on this list.

Very unexpected! I listened to The Byrds (at least in a complete sense) the first time because of this list. This is the third album from the band that I got here. I think this one is a little different because I was not expecting a bit of experimentalist and psychedelia that I found in some songs here. I'm not sure if I can classify it as good or bad, but it's different and deserves the spent of 50 minutes.

I’m in the 60s! The Bryd’s bring their vocal harmonies and jangly guitars. Besides the first track and some of the moodier tracks there weren’t any standout tracks. The album doesn’t flow song to song as a big picture, but more gives snapshots of each feeling. They were able to bring their rock and roll, country and moody psychedelia together coherently.

It was ok. Some songs were good, some were weird.

Rock psicodélico sesentero. Se me ha hecho un poco bola. Ni fu ni fa.

I liked these, but nothing that really grabbed my attention.

Heard before: not a single song! Typical Byrds - the standout song turned out to be a Bob Dylan cover. I enjoyed this album mostly - the songs were a little 'samey', and soft. I could do with a little more edge in psychedelic rock. Sometimes the sound effects spliced into songs got annoying - the alien babble on C.T.A. ruined the song for me by the 2nd listen. Favourite songs: My Back Pages, Why Least favourite: C.T.A., Don't Make Waves

Very much a psychadelic-folk album, pretty much what I expected from the Byrds. When they stick to the basics it's pretty good, but there are some low points in this album that take me out of it. First is the moments they try to get experimental with the instruments like the biggest offender CTA-102; on one hand good for them for trying these things in the 60s, definitely very progressive but it just doesn't really land well. Mind Gardens is also trying a bit too hard. Enjoyed quite a few of the more 'standard' tunes on the album though.

Not bad. 3/5

The Byrds are one of the original rock bands, so to speak. While the songs definitely resemble rock music, it's not all that memorable to me. They're fine songs.

Solid album. Should be listened to as a whole album, not as a collection of songs because the “Byrds sound” gets old after a while. It’s no Sweetheart, but it’ll do.

decent classic rock

Transported me straight back to my childhood, and mum playing music on the 'hi-fi'. Not sure it was The Byrds she ever played, but this is the vibe that reminds me of those times. A decent listen.

It was good but nothing really grabbed me.

I listened to the first track and thought I was going to enjoy this however that feeling didn’t last. It was alright but not blowing my mind so another average 3*

Rock psicodélico sesentero. Se me ha hecho un poco bola. Ni fu ni fa.

Enjoyed this much more than the previous Byrd's offering. There are some great songs on here.

Great guitar sound, but inessential. Stick to the Greatest Hits

this album is placed so firmly in the sixties. i hear some beatles and beach boys inspired songs. "thoughts and words," with its fake sitar sound (they had me fooled!), is definitely reminiscent of the beatles/george harrison from this time period. i enjoy the variety in this album. i think the byrds really tried to hit as many rock genres as they could! there's a good amount of the peppy sixties pop sound, but "everybody's been burned" is a lovely sober tune to round out the album. "so you wanna be a rock 'n' roll star" was a cute way to open the album, and again it just felt so sixties. all in all, i liked the album fine, but it didn't grab me like other sixties albums of similar sound have in the past. it is interesting to see an evolution of david crosby!

I really enjoyed the diversity of genres on this album. In addition, there was clearly a lot of experimentation going on that sort of defied the expectations for an album centered in the heart of the 60s. Both of these things kept things fresh and interesting on this album, during a time when bands had a tendency to stay kind of "one note". As a complete aside, I love Georges Seurat and the pointillism art movement, and I really liked how The Byrds seemed to gravitate towards what could be defined as a pointillism-inspired album cover. Ultimately, an enjoyable album!

Cool guitar sounds. Lots of fuzz and some even cool reverse sounds.

"So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star" is an object lesson on self-deprecation, and it can be appreciated. The joke being that the truth is so unbelievable as to how non-sensical, and predatory success is. Maybe a shot at The Beatles? Conspiracy theories abound with gibberish in apparent reverse being heard at the conclusion of "C.T.A. - 102" when many religious movements started to suggest that musicians who sold their souls to the devil were implanting messages. Perhaps this was an early nod to that ridiculousness, but nonetheless here it is being discussed. A familiar melody can be heard on "Everybody's Been Burned" reminiscent of a certain spy-thriller from Ian Fleming that would make its movie debut around this time. This particular song is really enjoyable though, for up until this moment The Byrds were seemingly a bit one-dimensional in music's attempt to replicate the success of The Beatles. This track put The Byrds in a unique light, suggesting that they have their own way to connect with listeners rather than being the product of a musical assembly line. "Mind Gardens" would also break this perceived mold and offer an acoustic heavy, in-depth writing, that we would end up enjoying via Nick Drake. Overall, one should not sleep on this album. Power through the 60s cookie-cutter tracks and you will find some real gems here.

Summer of live rock that’s not quite psychedelic, not quite folk. I think it would land harder if it picked a side.

Jangly hippy guitar pop, but sounding a bit dated now.

surprised me how accomplished this album was. i know of the byrds, i've never listened to an album of theirs and i had them down as generic swinging 60s beat music with tinny and shrill sounding guitars. this album is better than that and has some well written songs with a bit of complexion to them. not saying i think its a masterpiece or anything but it's a lot better than i was expecting. i reckon a younger me probably would have given them a bit more time.

My mama told me not to finger anyone with a hairy growler. I told her to fuck off and fingered her dry.

was great

this album has my favourite Byrds tune...My Back Pages. Love that song. A couple of other good songs here but more filler than most Byrds albums that I know. 3.5 stars

Peakalo u prvoj pjesmi

A good entry point for classic or stereotypical "60s music" sound. Jangly electric guitars, smooth creamy harmonies, the oddly off balance mix (e.g. drums right, guitars left), a solid dose of late60s psychedelia in many of the songs. It's not something that hits me hard in any emotional way though, so it feels more like mood music - i.e. those days i'm putting on my paisley shirt, hey throw on the Byrds! But it is a collection of great melodic tunes [except for "Mind Gardens" which is a psychedelic wet fart] from a band that's probably often overlooked as one of the more influential bands of the early rock era. Absolutely worth a listen or two. 7/10 3 stars.

ganska kul faktiskt

Great album, it doesn't have a Mr Tambourine Man or Turn! Turn! Turn! but still a lot of awesome tracks on here.

When the album got to it’s more psychedelic moments it was at its best but when it wasn’t it just seemed a little boring at points.

Calming but too simple

Trippy

The Byrds are cool. This album is a cool mix of everything that was happening at the time. It's a little British Invasion, a little Country/Blues, and little Experimental/Psychadelic Rock. And they blend it all into something that makes sense. Like I said, it's cool.

If it's good enough for tommy P it's good enough for me 3

Liked it, didn't love it. Gave me late Beetles vibes...

At its best it was nice chill wannabe Beatles music, at its worst it was mind gardens. It's a decent album, just a bit dull, def doesn’t make any waves. CTA-102 was like the birth of crazy frog

Ikke dumt men kræver lidt flere lyt. Men god lyd

Despative some unconventional musical choices and good pacing, Younger than Yesterday remains an unfortunatley conventional album that does not particularily stand out on this list

Unremarkable. Had minor ups and downs, but there was nothing that made my heart lose a beat. A pleasant throwback to the 60's, but nothing more than that.

"The Girl With No Name" i "Help" The Beatles brzmią zaskakująco podobnie.

yeah sure

Not my fave band from the era and this album didn't persuade me otherwise

The Byrds are just so meh. 6/10

17 songs spanning a 46 minute album. Just my attention span! There's is quite an eclectic mix of songs on this album. Some psychedelic stuff, some surf rock, but all quick, to the point and done. Sometimes it's nice to be in an out in 3 minutes.

The byrds do a good job of having every album sound different. Sometimes for the better sometimes for worst. This one had a more indie style to it. Felt like an older jock drake album. I enjoyed it a bit but nothing really stood out. They’re good artistically but the byrds don’t really have songs I go back to often. 6.6/10

Possibly lowballing this out of the feeling this sound and era are over represented on this list, and possibly in the official pop pantheon generally. The usual problem of covering Dylan in that the rest of the lyrics suffer in comparison. I never dislike listening to this kind of thing but it’s a well I rarely return to otherwise these days.

First wave Ska!

Not incredibly memorable, outside the psychedelic influences and the harmonies.

Enjoyed the album, doesn't have a lot of my favorite Byrds songs though. 3.5

Historical album, enjoyable but nothing standout.

Have you seen her face My back pages Uspoređuju ih s Beatlesima i stvarno su dobri ali ipak mi nisu blizu njima!

Jingle Jangle. After being served three Byrds albums here, it's become apparent that the band's legacy is providing a blueprint for current and future artists to improve upon. R.E.M., the Eagles, Beatles, Beach Boys are just some who out Byrd-ed the Byrds. Hell, David Crosby out did them when he (pardon the pun) flew the coop and formed CSN. You can hear a lot of The Byrds on Tom Petty records (yes, including his cover of "So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star", this album's best track). I've enjoyed all 3 Byrds albums so far. I'm just surprised at how much their music completely sounds like it's of its time and not timeless. Which isn't a necessarily a bad thing.

Almost got two stars

Liked the opener (covered by Tom Petty in the 80s i think) and a couple of others... feels of the era for me though.

It was nice. Pretty much a Beach Boys and Beatles kind of sounds. 6/10

Good though sounds like all other Byrds albums on this list

6,5/10 Legal

Typical 60s rock

I started listening to this album with my eyes ready to roll. Especially after the first few songs I was about ready to but then this album took an interesting turn. Instead of sounding like so many other 60's rock of the time, it started going very psychadellic. It really hit hard on Mind Gardens which sounded ahead of its time. While this didn't end up closing out the week perfectly, I still liked this album (except, boring album cover).

cute little album i enjoyed it

Nice. It got interesting after like 5 songs but it did not disappoint

I like the Byrds sound. I think there were some major egos in this band. Their lyrics are preachy and self-important, but I do think they are a solid band. They have that harmony nailed down, and that is something special for sure.

3 stars. I appreciate what they are doing. Isolated, this album has interesting moments. But placed in the context of 1967, this had been done before. Revolver did all of this (and better) 6 months before.

The Notorious Byrd Brothers album was a real surprise. When I listened to that I was shocked at how progressive and different it was for 1968. I enjoyed the NBB album as a whole, however Moog Raga, Triad, Space Oddessy and Universal Mind Decoder stood out. The album continues to get airtime here. Younger Than Yesterday is closer the Byrds album I was expecting, the signature chiming soft guitar, tambourines and voice harmonies that evoke the 60's is sticky syrup and it's all over this. I did find interest in a few tracks. C.T.A.-102 evades the norm somewhat and introduces some errant electronic whizzing which is interesting. The opening guitar to Have You Seen her Face is badass, but then the steady tambourine kinda ruins it. Why includes some backwards, (I'm assuming devil worshiping) talk, But the most surprising track is the opening "So You Want to Be a Rock N Roll Star" is original. I'm used to Tom Petty's version and I discovered Patty Smith also covers it. In the time before 1001 albums I'd been dismissing The Byrds as Byrd shit and neglected to realize the cool guitar chord progressions, riffs and bluesy breaks that really are unique. However I wasn't too far off. I just found out that most of the great songs on NBB were not commercially released in 1968, and only made an appearance in the remasters and rereleased versions in the 90s.

Did The Byrds have short attention spans? A classic rock album where the longest song is 3:28? Even with the shorter song lengths, multiple songs devolve into weird sounds or tangents. "Time Between" is nice - "through love and trust it's gonna work out fine" - but it's cut so short at under 2 minutes. That works great sometimes for a fast-paced punk sprint, but feels odd with a ballad like this. There was also too much experimenting with weird or unorthodox sounds or instruments; it seemed random and often didn't fit the song. (Ah... "the album captured the band and record producer Gary Usher experimenting with new musical textures, including brass instruments, reverse tape effects and an electronic oscillator.") "Mind Gardens" could be a nice, interesting song, but instead it's not. And sometimes they sound like they are trying to sing in British accents? Overall, I preferred "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" and felt like there was a lot of unrealized potential marred by experimentation on "Younger Than Yesterday." That one got a high 3, this one gets a low 3.

With standouts like So You Wanna Be a Rock n Roll Star, Renaissance Fair, Everybody's Been Burned and, especially, My Back Pages, YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY gives us a great window into the folk rock stylings of the 60s. The album is somewhat uneven, perhaps due to the amount of sonic experimentation, much of which doesn't quite land. But the insightful lyrics and the interplay of the band, gifted musicians riffing off of each other, give listeners plenty to like. The sound is definitely 60s, with some backward sections, raga inspired sonic beds and unmistakable drum rhythms/sounds of the period. Many may find it dated, but instead I look at it as a stepping stone that brought music to it's next level, to be built upon by other groups that would put their own decade's stamp on the genre. I give it a solid 3.

Buen disco

The Byrds: The Beatles but less interesting - For context, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band came out the same year and is just so much... more. In a period where the genre of rock and roll was being defined and borders were being explored, they have a sound that is about 5 years behind the times. Listening now, the simple harmonies and rhythms seem a little meh and dated. It's nice, unobjectionable music, with some nice close harmony bits but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a record

Very retro 60s. Strong 3, not quite a 4 for me.

Yeah fine, nothing of note

I found this one to be pretty interesting. The sound itself has so much has so much texture. It feels like this album was inspired by all kinds of music at ones. Really running the gambit of Genres. And it even gets weird on the track CTA. But overall man, I think it's a good piece of work. I like it, would I stake my name on it and recommend it? Probably not. But I'm not too sure.

A very pleasant album.

Pseeee

Nothing like pop tunes under 2 and half minutes.

It’s ok. Good to have on doing other things.

Curious but dated

This album hits several large boxes for late 60's Rock Music. With that in mind, it has some notable tracks, but also some largely repetitive tunes. A solid effort and worth the listen.

Classic OG rock n roll, with a bit of an 'ahead of its time' twist. Bit of an Eastern hippy psychedelic twist too. Decent. 3/5

A really enjoyable and at times interesting (if unspectacular) listen.

Very 60s, a bit of a beatles and beach vibe. Pretty good to have on in the background.

Didn’t finish

Kinda generic psych rock, okay. Hugh Masekala does the trumpet on the first track apparently, I like the links between the different 1001 albums

A couple of ok songs but the rest of the album is too psychedelic/annoying for me

Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: C.T.A. - 102, Don't Make Waves Cutting Edge: So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star, My Back Pages, The Girl With No Name, Lady Friend Overall Notes: I guess I'm a fan of mid-late 60's rock, because even though this was a step down from the Beatles and there were definitely some misses on here this was still an enjoyable listen.

If could give 3.5 I would

Decent album from the Byrds following Gene Clarks departure. Setting them up for future country / folk experiments.

Solid 60s psych rock. Love the eastern angles

Leuke jaren 60 rock.

pretty good, its what I expected the Beatles to be Fav track: Why (but wasn't paying too much attention to it while I was listening)

Highlights: Time Between, Everybody's Been Burned, My Back Pages, It happens Each Day Lowlight: C.T.A. - 102 The biggest issue I have so far with this album is that it doesn't start becoming listenable until the 4th track, and even then there are some risks that the artists took that fell flat, detracting from what have been a good classic folk-rock album. C.T.A. - 102 should be left out entirely, it sounds like an unfunny joke where the punchline is just a minute of sheer annoyance at the end. Thoughts and Words would have been good if they didn't experiment with the reverse guitar pedal. Time Between is a bright, strummy ditty that showcases the 12-string nicely, while Everybody's Been Burned is dour and a great contrast; both are excellent. My Back Pages (both versions?) invokes nostalgic reflection with practical use of lovely 70's style hard-panning and harmony. Overall, this is pussy rock, but not the Byrds finest example of it.

Pop inicial sin demasiada sustancia. Al menos para mis gustos

yeyeyeye

Good 60's jangle. Interesting to hear the beginning of that jangly sound.

Pretty great album. They are a great band too

These songs are ok but I'm not that into it, sounds like children's music to me.

Well-constructed songs and deep lyrics. Not bad at all.

Good 60s rock, with some psychedelia mixed in to keep it interesting Highilights: -My Back Pages -Have you Seen Her Face -Mind Garden -Renaissance Fair

was a bit Beatley but I liked how most the songs were short. cute x

alright. bit beatley

Nothing special. Just a fine hippy album.

Quality, pleasant.. Not so keen on CTA 102 song.

Gute 3 Sterne.

Chill stuff. It wasn't bad but didn't stand out. Might need another listen.

Not my favorite Byrds album but you can't go wrong with their stuff around this time.

Folky country rock, its ok but not Crosby, Stills and Nash level.

Trippier than I expected - so many similarities to Revolver

It was fine, but kind of inconsistent.

Fantastic melodies; just sounds really dated.

This isn’t that good. Very dated. How many Byrds albums do I need to listen to before I die? 😩

Highlights: So You Want To Be A Rock N Roll Star, My Back Pages. 2.6

1.75 - Not for me.

Langweilig.

“We have Beatles at home”

C.T.A.-102 kind of freaked me out

The Byrds feel very much like a just ok band to me, not sure they need this many albums on the list

Pleasant listen and some good tunes. Somewhat forgettable overall as I completely forgot to review it and now can’t really remember what I thought beyond this

I wasn’t too excited for this one as, I amn’t a fan of the Byrds. In my opinion they kind of just never got over Beatlemania. I’d recommend I have you seen her face, Renaissance fair, Time Between, Thoughts and words, My back pages and The girl with no name.

Not my jam. I have no interest in this sound at all.

Always found them a bit boring and never got the comparisons to some of their superior peers. Not for me.

The Byrds are clearly not for me after listening to two of their biggest albums and finding them both extremely boring to listen to. The musicianship & vocal melodies themselves are pleasant enough and give a feeling of warmth, but the record itself feels devoid of anything that grabs me or makes me want to listen again. It feels like listening to a Beatles spin off without any of the interesting songwriting. 4/10.

Another Byrds album ughh

Why is there always one track that has to take the momentum out of the entire work? Favourite Track(s): Thoughts and Words Least Favourite Track(s): C.T.A. - 102, Mind Gardens

Honestly, the bubble gum rock wasn’t bad…the psychedelia….could do without. Maybe I just hate David Crosby that much?

please tell whoever’s scrambling all these sounds up to keep their paws off the audio

Early Beatles meet Simon & Garfunkel. It was ok.

all this late 60s crap sounds identical to me

Bob Dylan is like an infection.

Didn’t enjoy this one. Very boring imo. I only really liked Have You Seen My Face and My Back Pages which for an album with 17 songs is not great

Didn't really enjoy this much

The Byrds innovated on the dominant Beatles/like sound of the day, and influenced southern rock styles from Tom Petty to REM. This album misses for me — some classic hits are lost in too much muddy experimentation. It’s not a good album, from my POV. A 2.

A lot of these later '60s psychedelic adjacent albums just aren't very good. I do love "So you want to be a Rock and Roll star" but frankly I think the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers version is much better. Great song, just better execution by TP&HB. So yeah, two stars, better Byrds albums later in their catalogue.

There's nothing really memorable here. It's largely fade-to-the-background fine - pleasant harmonies, the occasional twangy chord mixing it up here & there - but also the occasional hyper-sincere flower child vibes (the appropriately named Ren Fair, the terribly blech Mind Gardens). Maybe a high 2, low 3 listen - but there's SO much of this late 60s stuff on the list that I'm rating down for taking the spot of something more interesting.

Neither good or bad. Listenable 60's sound

🎧Maybe a hot take but I think this album is pretty weak. Renaissance Fair in particular is dreadful. Favorite track is a Dylan tune, My Back Pages. I like The Byrds, didn’t care for this though.

It seems like they are trying to be everything but nothing specific.

not my thing

not a great album. experimental.

Super psychadelic.. Weird in a lot of ways.

didnt even notice it was on. not unlistenable

American beatles?? Include alien jumpscare. That's fun.

Just a bit dull. Feels a bit tired and washed out.

Not horrible but The Byrds are still on thin ice because of the god awful Sweetheart of the Rodeo album

I think I'm predisposed to dislike most of the Beatles contemporaries because they dont flex nearly as much creativity

It aight.

Meh. Background music. Temu Beatles.

Pretty boring.

Dylan tribute band

I don’t particularly like folk or country rock, but I understand that The Byrds were trailblazers in those types of music. The album itself is eclectic and pleasant. A couple of straight rock tracks, reminiscent of early Beatles. A couple of more psychedelic rock songs, including the space rock “CTA-102”. “Time Between” has a country twang. The rest very Folky with nice vocal harmonies . Not my jam but not bad and definitely influential.

Great for the genre I guess but I had to skip through this. 2.5

The Byrds are all over the place. In this album there was at least 3 times when I checked to see if another tab was talking or playing music because it literally sounded chaotic like they didn't go together at all!

Nah. this was pretty bad.

Already forgot most of it

They can't even spell birds right - meh!

they're just weird

There are many Beatles knockoffs to pick from. This was one of the weaker ones.

Oh man, this is so good! The final album from them, I'm free!

Unremarkable
