vibe was a little weird for me today

Started strong but fell off

Probably more like a 3.5/3.75. I really love some of the tracks on here but others begin to feel a little too psychedelic and repetitive.

46 minutes.of two minute.songs but it isn't punk. Huh. Overall this is a pretty good album. Lots of different, pleasing melodies and each song seems to have a unique instrument or sound somewhere in it.

no complaints but no real compliments either

Way better than their other album on the list Solid, good, short. Sweet

first time listen to The Byrds So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star - 4/5 Have You Seen Her Face - 5/5 C.T.A.102 - 3/5 (can't take the alien voices at the end seriously lol) Renaissance Fair - 4/5 Time Between - 3/5 Everybody's Been Burned - 4/5 Thoughts and Words - 5/5 Mind Gardens - 2/5 My Back Pages - 4/5 The Girl With No Name - 3/5 Why - 3/5 Average score: 3.6/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ there's a few nice songs here, but most of this release was kinda whatever to me. hopefully I enjoy their other albums better, as they seem to show up multiple times on this list for some reason

Very good summer of love, '67 psychedelic album. But after just hearing "Axis:Bold as Love", released the same year, this album kind of pales in comparison. There are some great songs on here, especially the more country-rock leaning ones written by Chris Hillman, but the song about aliens, "CTS-102" and the David Crosby-penned "Mind Gardens" with its sitar and nod to Eastern religion and culture, just feel dated and ridiculous. The album closes really well with the Dylan cover "My Back Pages" and "Why?" A mixed bag of an album but a fun enough listen. Did it need to be in this list?

Maybe deserves a bit higher, I'm sure it was novel in its day, but I'm fatigued by the more psychedelic stuff here, too many Byrds albums. Listened to original tracklist, and the last few tracks from the Dylan cover to Why are really good, would kind of take or leave the rest

Mix between Beatles and Crosby Stills Nash and Young, but not as good

davvero cute, ma purtroppo dimenticabile

Finally, a Byrds album before they stopped harmonising. There are still too many Byrds albums on this list to be clear, but enjoyed the folky roots combined with the "new" psychedelia - enjoyed this one.

Thoughts and Words könnte glatt auf Rubber Soul veröffentlicht worden sein, mein Highlight.

Like it 3/5

Not really my thing

Very 60s, I like the Byrds.

While I appreciate albums like this, they definitely show their age. I can hear the bones of what came after, and I understand why they're on this list, but they just don't capture my attention.

Solid offering of the 1960s. A bit derivative of its predecessors. By 1967 the influence of the Beatles, Donovan and Simon & Garfunkel were so evident in these recordings that it's a little over wrought. The best is yet to come though! Soon after this, David Crosby will form CSNY and Graham Parsons will have his body snatched from LAX and burned in the desert.

I went into this expecting more, given The Byrds' reputation. But this feels like a bit of a letdown in their discography for me. It's got the sound and style I love from that time period, but it lacks that special something that makes you remember an album. There are some nice moments scattered throughout, but overall it didn't leave much of an impact after just one listen. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star - Have You Seen Her Face - My Back Pages

3.0 - Ok

I prefer sweetheart to the rodeo with its country rock sound. Recognize the influence but don’t love them outside their covers!

type 3/5, good but not that good

A couple songs have a country flavor, some are psychedelic-leaning. The main component are the multi-part harmonies and 12-string guitar work. The obligatory Bob Dylan cover, My Back Pages, features breathtakingly wistful harmonies on the chorus. So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star is a good pop song with a great hook and wry lyrics. There's some playing around in the studio, a couple of tracks reverse or speed up the tape for some psychedelic effects. The Byrds and this record are an integral part of the hazy, summery, soundtrack of the late sixties. 3.5/5

Good harmonies for some psychedelic 60s rock

a guitarra reversa imitando uma cítara é divina!!!! adorei conhecer essa banda. a falta desse app de meia estrela é cruel. 3,5.

This was fine for some 60s psychedelia. Not bad, but I didn't feel like this was really interesting either

Strong guitar. The shaker is always off. Each song stands on only 1-2 ideas. Weak songwriting. Still a pleasant listen. Great vibes. But wouldn’t listen to it again.

7/10 - I really wrestled between giving this a 3 or a 4. I really like this album. The album opens with a banger, moves to a good second song, and a surprising third (especially for 1967). It’s a really strong album and one I would love to own. My reason for giving it a 3 and not a 4 are that the album lulls in the middle for 2 songs and the best song on the album is a Bob Dylan cover. It’s a good album, but it lives as a strong 3 and not a light 4.

Fun 60's album with a couple of tracks that stand out from the rest (Have You Seen Her Face and My Back Pages). The rest of the songs are good but pale in comparison. 7/10

What the heck was that wierd alien speak thing in between tracks 3 & 4. So strange. I think the best part of this exploration into new bands, is reading the history. I've kinda heard of The Byrds before, but didn't know they spun off other bands like Firefall and Crosby Stills and Nash. (I saw firefall in concert last year for the first time) I had a Gene Clark solo album right before this one too. I suppose, as the album goes. It's alright. Again, that alien thing was a bit out of left field, but the tunes here are pretty good for the era. I do not recognize any tracks though. It also seems to be a staple of the era, that at least one song that Dylan wrote, is on this record. Dylan is a pretty good writer despite his awful voice.

A good listen I thought even though there were no stand out songs I enjoyed it all the same. Interesting that they were trying new things along with the Beatles at the same time but sound completely different.

Definitely an interesting record. At first, I was sure I was going into another run of the mill 60s psychedelic rock regurgitation. When the strange sound effects and voice popped in on track 3, I was invested. I only wish this record was more comfortable exploring these experimental moments more. Still, I found this to be a pretty fun record with some bold moments.

Wow, que aburrido.

3.5⭐️/5 02.10.2026

Not their strongest... 2.5 but rounding up.

Alright, I like the parts where they reverse the instruments, and they voices are angelic, but not a lot stood out to me really. My Back Pages and Why are my faves. Also the alt versions of Mind Gardens and My Back Pages too. 5.3/10

estaba chimba, chill, lo escuché desde temprano y la verdad bien, bacano

Listening Notes A group I've listened to very little of but don't know why Psychedelic and weird, lovin it Standout Tracks "So You Want to Be a Rock n Roll Star", "Have You Seen Her Face", "C.T.A.-102", "Everybody's Been Burned", "Thoughts and Words", "Why" First time? Yes Will it go into your rotation? Definitely will check out more of their stuff

When I want to listen to the Beatles, I listen to the Beatles. When I want to listen to Bob Dylan, I listen to Bob Dylan. When I want to listen to both of them at the same exact time, I listen to the Byrds. The Byrds were great at what they did. I like some of their albums a little better than Younger Than Yesterday but it's still got some strong songs on it.

The pop stuff on this is so good, fine tuned and quick hits, thrown out like clay pigeons. The psych stuff feels distinctly of its time and feels either experimental or trendy depending on how I'm feeling. Either way, I like Mind Gardens a lot less than the pop cuts. Favorite Tracks: So You Want To be a Rock N Roll Star, Have You Seen Her Face, Renaissance Fair, The Girl With No Name

"CTA 102" was a really weird track (particularly for something from the 60's). "My Back Pages" was pretty good though.

A pretty standard affair, highlights include “back pages” which I actually think is an incredibly strong song and mind garden as well as a great interval that sounds like aliens arriving. The band clearly thought so too, as both tracks appear twice on the version I listened too. Beyond that however there is no real standout, give either of those two a spin and skip the rest.

Conflicted about this one. Love the Byrds, love their sound, love the influence they had on so many others. Yet I’ve always found myself a little lost in their albums and rhe same is true here. Couldn’t quite find anything that made me say, “Heck yes, so glad to listen to this song at this very moment.” Putting it down as a 3, expect I’ll rate other albums of theirs higher.

Good for the background

Favorite Track: My Back Pages

I don't mind the Byrds, and it was enjoyable, but nothing stood out on this album.

So you want to be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star CTA - 102 Mind Gardens My Back Pages Old John Robertson

Renaissance Fair Everybody’s Been Burned Thoughts and Words My Back Pages (Alternate) Lady Friend

"My Back Pages" is great. The rest just fine.

I enjoyed the sound, there were some catchy melodies and I’m glad I listened. Added 1 song to my playlist

It'd be miserly not to like this a bit!

It's better than their last album, but they're definitely not my favorite 60s album.

I expected to know more songs on this than I did. Still a nice listen but not a lot really drawing me in.

Mind gardens gillade jag inte alls, irriterande låt.

Lightweight fun with a drop of weird. 3.25 stars

Another fine album

Mixed bag, this one. Some of their best tunes mixed with some noise and some seemingly half-finished ideas.

Feels like I've had this album already, sounds like a lot of other 60s psychedelic rock stuff. Not bad but not great. Meh. 2.5/5

This feels like a transitional album. There are pointers to the more country sound that was coming as well as David Crosby's work with CSNY, while some of the production choices straddle the line between experimental and gimmicky. It all adds to the sense of a band who are throwing a lot of stuff at the wall to see what sticks. The best song though is still a relatively straightforward Dylan cover - My Back Pages is the standout track for me.

Weird mix of the Beatles and psychedelic rock.

354/1089 - Slightly better than the Mama's and Papa's album I had recently. Too many twangy reversed guitars and not enough harmonic movement to justify their existence.

its 1967 (the sgt.peppers year) and you are still offering me this shit 3/5

I enjoyed this album listen from The Byrds! I honestly liked the alternate versions of some of the songs better than the originals because they were more edgy and unpolished than the more commercial sounding track listings. Overall, this album didn’t blow me away but I had a pleasant time listening to it and would check it out again in the future!

A pleasant listening experience but nothing overly exciting

This was chill and pleasant. Some weird bits in there for sure

I don't think this was as good as the other Byrds album that came up on this list. This one felt less cohesive overall, and not as polished. Still very much in their style and feel, and I stand by a psychedelic weird version of the beetles. Really still enjoyed the weird little moments here n there, like the high pitched helium voice and the interesting modulated guitar sounds. 7/10

Great album. Great era.

It's Ok. didnt really move the needle one way or another.

I really like the Byrds. I love the twelve string guitar, the nontraditional bass lines, and the psychedelic feel they give. The late 60s is my favorite genre. I love "So you want to be a rock and roll star" but it ends WAY too soon. Nothing on this album stands out. Their first three albums are all better than this, plus other artists of this time (Moby Grape, Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Hollies) I think did an even better job.

Yllättävän hyvä, ei ollutkaan sitä perus tän ajan poprock renkutusta. Nää kappaleet tuntui paljon syvemmiltä. Moni kappaleista tosi tunnelmallisia. Jotkut aika psykedeelisiäkin. Parhaat: Everybody's Been Buried, It Happens Each Day, Have You Seen Her Face

Did I like some of this? Yes. Did I like all of this? No. Did I sigh, roll my eyes at times? Yes. Did I actively hate Mind Garden? Yes.

thought this was quite fun

This was kind of a wild ride, I’m not sure the Byrds knew what they wanted this album to be. We’ve got an incredible intro, then whatever “CTA 102” is… Overall a fun one!

I always viewed the Byrds as being more a cover band than anything, so I was actually surprised to find that all but one song on here were originals. The one cover, "My Back Pages," has some of my favorite Dylan lyrics "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now" is something to which I relate more and more. I liked the part in CTA-102 where it got all fucked up and sounded like they accidentally let David Lynch wander into the production booth.

Gear: ZMF Bokeh Closed Artwork: 🔬👻📸 Production: 🔊🥴🔊 Music: 💊🧪👽 Rating: 🐦🦅(🦆)/5

I love the cynical, self-referential Rock n Roll Star, and tracks like Renaissance Fair and Everybody’s Been Burned gleam with David Crosby’s magic touch. The harmonies and chiming 12-string are in full flow, the signature sounds are all there, but it does feel like they’re getting to the end of something with this record. Mind Gardens in particular shows the listener where Crosby was heading. It’s a mish-mash of an album, but an interesting listen.

The opening track is great but as an album something about this just doesn't gel for me. It has the chiming 12-strings but is just a bit wayward. If I knew the history of the Byrds perhaps I could pinpoint why. I don't so I am just a bit nonplussed.

Melko kokeellista ja psykedeelisiä taustoja biiseissä, mut ihan menevää paikoitellen. Jossain kohtaa meni jo todella oudoksi. eipä silti hirveesti jäänyt kerrottavaa. Pari kovaa biisiä.

Jooooooo tää on tämmöstä.

Selkee homma!

Another old rock album, but quite pleasant to listen to.

This is some crazy 60s experimentation, especially with the aliens I was laughing my butt off. I liked the different sounds but i only really liked one or two songs

not a fan

It was ok, but it really says something when the absolutely best song is a cover.

Cool album, some good tunes for sure! 6.4/10

A good jangly pop album with just enough weirdness to make it a little more interesting.

Fine but forgettable.

Started off really well, but then got a bit weird. Ended up sounding like a bad Beatles knock off 3 ⭐️

It was alright, maybe even pretty good. Except when it was just weird noises. Also it was a bit jangly at times.

This was ok. A lot of 60s mod sounds, but also a bit more folk than I was expecting. Overall enjoyable album, but no real stand outs for me. 3

Typical classic rock from the late 60s. Heard some Beatles influences along with Beach Boys and other bands from that era. None of the songs particularly jumped out at me though. It was just fine.

So many Byrds and related albums, good lord! At least this one wasn't too bad. I enjoyed several of these songs. But how can such a boring band have so many (5) albums considered essential? Key tracks: So You Want to Be a Rock n' Roll Star Everybody's Been Burned Thoughts and Words

Bra men lite tandlöst

låtsasbeatles? äh det var väl okej

Its good, not great. What sets it apart is that it very clearly laid the groundwork for other groups and a "sound" that would permeate and influence a generation of rock musicians. This isnt their best album but its good.

Meh. I liked it better than Fifth Dimension at least.

Started out enjoying the sound. Third track or so turned into a horror movie (or something with streaming messed up), back to regular sound but started to quickly get bored after that.

There are some cool ideas, I dig the 12 string guitars, the reverse parts are cool, the songs are well written. Definitely worth a listen. There's some pretty catchy stuff here too. And there are twangs of country in some of the guitar lines.

Very much a thing of its time, but you can see why they were big back then. And you can hear the influence they have had on more modern music, the second track was very like the friends theme. Over all it was an enjoyable listen, but was it a mega album? Not for me, but definitely worth a 3

I've never really listened to the Byrds too much over thr years, but I do remember the big tracks on this, especially 'My Back Pages' a top tune. This could be the first album to feature aliens and no doubt the last to do so. There was some early experimentation probably under the influence of substances, which always appeals to me, so it's a 3 star effort.

Good album

I enjoyed the 60's sound with the jangly 12-string Rickenbacker guitar, a sound The Byrds and Roger McGuinn are known for. I liked the record and can see how it's influenced rock. A worthy inclusion on the list of albums you must hear before you die.

the byrds are definitely a band i should like more than i do. i blame david crosby

Eh, just tired of the Byrds. OK otherwise I guess...

I want to like the Byrds, but outside of The Notorious Byrd Brothers, I have a hard time really digging into many of their albums. I wish this album was more garage-y. Like, why would I listen to this when the 13th Floor Elevators exist?

Mostly forgettable but I did like the cover of my back pages

I think we've already adequately covered several very similar albums (including others by The Byrds.) This is a good album, just like the others almost exactly like it that crowd this list to the exclusion of other worthy entries. I'll tack on an extra half-star for the guest appearance of trumpeter Hugh Masekaea on the opening track, "So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star". I had never noticed it before and enjoy the song to a greater degree now that I am aware of it.

Top song was My Back Pages, which I now find is a cover

Nothing wrong with the music. Felt like a ripoff of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and CCR. Just a boring album.

Well it’s much better than the other byrds album we had

Quite enjoyed this one. Still sound like some kind of tribute band though

A few classics that resonated with me. A few songs that simply were.

Soaring harmonies and folky essence that make this electrified music homey.

Low rent Beatles or Beach Boys.

This was ok. Felt short. 3/5

6 - AVERAGE

This is my FIFTH the byrds album! We get it ffs

It’s fine but this band will forever be trapped in the 70’s psych rock/pop aesthetic for me

I don't love this style of music but this was fairly unobjectionable. 2.5

Enjoyable. I liked it but not loved it. Nice melodies and pop sensibilities. Beatles-esque. Fave tracks are “Have you seen her face” and the Dylan cover “my back pages”

6.5/10

Enjoyable!

60’s rock

Standout Songs: C.T.A. - 102 Thoughts and Words My Back Pages The Girl With No Name

I like it but I don’t love it.

interesting

Kadett, Ellwangen - Ansbach, Deutschland. Tänzelt angenehm durch.

3.5 This was a very exciting album, especially for 60s, and it still sounds pretty fresh today. I’ve always liked The Byrds and their psych folk rock style. They were a little experimental on this with reverse sounds and other electronic effects which fitted the album nicely. But nothing really sets this album apart from the rest of the decade - sort of above average.

Strong 3

Excellent album. Doesn't necessarily feel essential, but a very worthy listen nonetheless

Hyvin tasapainoinen rocklevy! 3/5

Liked So You Want To Be a Rock n Roll Star. Dylan did My Back Pages so much better. This was...fine. It left me wanting more...something. Drugs, maybe?

It was okay not my favorite I little too light

I listened to the original release (11 tracks). There are two hits off this album, and the rest I haven’t heard previously. I never was a huge fan if the Byrds, they were sort of middle of the pack. Overall easy listening.

Silly Byrds! (Silly Bob Dylan!) Sounds old-timey. I like it better than Crosby et al's stuff. Pleasant. Nothing outstanding, but I wasn't particularly looking to be outstood. Highlight: 'My Back Pages'

My Back Pages is a good tune, and I actually like the way that old albums consisted of lots of shorter songs. Most of these are well packaged and crisp and it flows well

Younger Than Yesterday is definitely one of the more bizarre albums on this list. Initially, it tricks you into thinking that its just going to be a Beatlesque album with some added country elements, but with C.T.A. - 102 and many other songs, it just really goes off the rails into extreme weirdness territory. It has everything from odd voices to those reverse-sounding guitars which really just make it a really weird album. I didn't think this made any of it bad, in fact, it kinda adds to the album's character but it is still rather jarring. That being said, i did enjoy this album and i thought it was better than the last Byrds album that i did. Best Song: Why Worst Song: C.T.A. - 102

Not their strongest work but a good record.

"The Byrds had initially come to international prominence in mid-1965, when their folk rock interpretation of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" reached number 1 on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and the UK Singles Chart." This just shows how shit Bob Dylan is. The Byrds did what Bob and his deathly harmonica could never. Other than that hilarious piece of trivia, a very 'meh' album that I probably won't listen to again. Did make me start to drift off towards the end. +1 extra for showing Bob how to record a song. Fuck you Bob.

Some good stuff here, but not my favorite Ryan Adams

Never was a Byrds guy but i liked the psych elements that start to bubble up on here (2.5/5)

should be my thing but some odd songs on this

462/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Saved a few songs, not bad but pretty similar to a lot of the music from this generation. It’s not bad. Something I’d play for anyone interested in classic rock

it’s like I woke up and realized that my idealized sense of how to live my youth kept me from losing the plot. flipped nostalgia. i’m left with making out what I just dreamt.

Instruments: 4/5 Production: 2/5 Vibes: 3/5 Emotional value: 2/5 Lyrics/Storytelling: 2/5 Stand out songs: My Back Pages, Everybody's Been Burned Rating: 2.6

Three stars for some classics. Generally do not prefer them. Maybe my least favorite of the CSNY family?

Not bad. I don't usually go for British invasion stuff, but this was raw enough to keep me interested.

Solid rock album! Liked it more than a lot of the other rock I've heard so far

A nice listen with a few standout tracks. 3.5⭐

60's psychedelic rock is just not my thing. This sounded like non-descript 60's rock, but with some weird noises thrown in. I didn't completely hate it and I liked My Back Pages.

Pretty good, a couple songs I wasn't fully into.

60s slop. It's fine, but pretty generic.

Album 919 of 1089 The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (1967) Rating : 3 / 5 I’ve always enjoyed The Byrds, and this one gave me more of that recognizable sound I associate with them compared to the last album I heard. Still, no tracks really jumped out and stuck with me this time around. It feels like one that might grow on me more with a few additional listens. Most of what I know from them are their big hit singles, so those naturally stand out in my memory. There weren’t any of those here, and I think that plays into it a bit. The songs were pleasant and well done, though - a laid-back and relaxing album overall.

Little trippier than I expected. Opening song is a classic. Otherwise kind of what I expected nothing I’d need to hear again.

Recht viu country, fasch chli zu viu für mi het paar sehr spezieui u einzigartigi songs drb. Viu gitarre u o recht fiini songs. het abr einzelni cooli derbi.

Solid 3.5 but leans more towards 3. Pretty good!

Solid album, really enjoyed psychedelic aspect

This is quite good apart from Mind Gardens

Just not enough standing out here, despite its pleasantness. Simpsons: Yes

It was aight, more interesting than I thought it was going to be, that alien shit came out of nowhere.

Cosy album with some good songs

3/5, some good songs.

Not my favorite Byrds album but it has some good songs and innovative ones too. So you wanna be a rock n roll star is a classic. Renaissance Fair and Mind Gardens were innovative at the time.

Not very memorable

Good musicianship The songs don't stick with me

Not bad for the Byrds but Jesus the cavernous gap in songwriting quality in the tracks between So You Wanna Be A Rock N Roll Star and Dylan's My Back Pages is something to behold. Pretty much the only thing to hold your attention between those two is the relatively bountiful use of backwards tracks.

This is now number four of five Byrds albums in the collection, so 80% done, which is perhaps the best I can say about the album (and the Byrds). I enjoyed a few tracks on this album, mainly "Everybody's been burned" and their well-known Dylan cover "My back pages", but I suspect I'd be hard-pressed to recall any songs from this album a few days from now, although "C.T.A - 102" definitely stands out as a strong outlier, at least the second half of the song with weird sound effects and faux-backwards "alien voices" (how daring!). Ultimately, though, this album has cemented my understanding that I'm not a fan of the Byrds' style or sound, and I'm not likely to warm up to them.

3.3 Pretty decent 60s psychadelic pop. Not the best, but far from the worst on this list. Such an overrepresented genre on here, but I'd keep this above a large portion of the rest.

Oh but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that noooww!

God I hate David Crosby. Back Pages and So You Wanna Be a RnR star are songs everyone needs to hear. Have You Seen Her Face is great. CTA is weird, drippy hippy euphoria and catchy. Girl with No Name is solid. So is Why. The Crosby lead songs are abysmal. Fuck you Dave. 3 stars

Avg 60s album, the Byrds should have stuck to Bob Dylan covers, that’s their bread and butter.

I was expecting a boring ‘60s record with generic songs/vibes. But this was really unique. Harmonically varied and sonically interesting. I love a weird album that is executed well. Folksy and psychedelic. I quite enjoyed it. 7/10

British boy bands

Reminds me of Bob Dylan. My back pages was a standout song. 5/10

Its good, i liked, but its very country

Almost all the songs were 4 star songs for me, but the few that were annoying were super annoying. Favourite song: The Girl With No Name Least: Mind Garden

Was nice, easy listening - but nothing really stuck with me.

I like the Byrds, but this is one of their weakest albums from their classic period IMO. The title track is a fun one and the other songs are all decent, but there aren't real standout moments or anything here. I'm kind of baffled as to why this one was included at all. There's enough Byrds representation as is and there's other albums not featured that I think showcase the Byrds better.

6/10…60s folk rock

Great album but not as great as Sweetheart at the Rodeo. The weird voice in CTA-102 is a nice touch.

This honestly feels like 1 song and a bunch of filler. My Back Pages is phenomenal. But it feels like they basically used all their creativity on that one song and had nothing left for the rest of the album.

It's some nice psychedelic rock, nothing too big. You can hear the British Invasion influences, but the weird parts and jazzy moments make it a bit more interesting than just generic rock and roll. Even so, it's not that good an album. The performances are pretty good, the singing is pretty nice and the backup vocals work really well. My favourite part were, as I said, the more experimental moments where they add new instruments and techniques to make the songs more interesting. The mix was a bit too thin, which might be because it was recorded a while ago. My favourite songs were "Ming Gardens" and "Renaissance Fair".

It was okay.

This is very much a Byrds record, combining all the harmonious psychedelia listeners came to expect with a burgeoning interest in jazz textures (shout out to Hugh Masekela making an appearance) and just a hint of the country rock sound they'd soon lean into.

Good music interspersed with some terrible David Crosby originals

Sounds like 1967

ok I guess. couple of keepers. 5.9 it gets better with multiple lessons actually.

Pop songs that are sometimes kind of trippy.

Like a lot of albums in the 60’s I can appreciate the timeless lyrics and musicianship but the recordings always sound similar to me because of the utter lack of bass/bottom end and smeared together parts. It’s an obvious question to me now : did the revolution in recording technology at the time beget the explosion of talent in the late 60’s/early 70’s or was it the other way around? I do appreciate gaining a deeper understanding of why this band covered so many Bob Dylan songs — feels like theor electrified versions were an obvious influence over his transition from his strictly folk acoustic origins.

I really like their sound but I didn’t find anything they I need to listen to again. I recall liking the previous album from The Byrds a little more.

Whatever you think of when you hear "generic late 60s/early 70s band" that is what this album is. It's not terrible, but nothing really stands out either.

it was fine. nothing much more to say than that. it was pretty chill to listen to.

Had a fun 60s sound that brought together a lot of influences. There were some standout tracks but nothing that absolutely blew me away. Will come back to give this one another listen but only worthy of a middle of the road rating.

I really like The Byrds sound and this album. Really easy to listen to, but with enough variation to keep you interested. This is a 3.5/5 for me.

Way too much of this on this list, I think this might be one of the better ones on here? But for me I really can't put much between them, they sell just sound the same.

Not bad, enjoyed the old-timey psychedelic folk-rock

So many Byrds albums.

Another Byrd's album and it was ok I've never been the biggest byrds fan, I don't hate them but not my favorite,! Just kind of a basic album lol

All my life I was told to get hip and pay attention. And I can't even begin to telling you how terminally borning the Byrds are. Like maybe you get diamonds from time and pressure but boy is this derivative, uninspired 60s folk. But, I guess thinking critically. Before the Byrds there was no 60s folk rock. And if they truly birthed a half a century of rock music. Then so be it.

The only thing from the Byrds that I’ve listened to before was Sweetheart of the Rodeo so I was expecting more of a country rock vibe and this wasn’t that. It was still a good album. Pleasant and mostly fine 60s rock with a few bits of weird psychedelic music included. Nothing too special that stands out here and I probably won’t relisten but not bad

It’s fine. Easy to listen to, not super memorable for me.

The album was cute and I surprisingly enjoyed listening to it. I thought it was gonna be some old kinda vibes album from 67’ but I liked it.

The Byrds. Hoo boy, it’s been a good while. 169 albums ago I referred to The Notorious Byrd Brothers as “...the worst album I've listened to thus far”. I don’t recall much about my thoughts on that album, though I’d probably disagree now. The worst album I’ve listened to through the list is probably Metal Box or The Chronic. Yeah, it’s pretty alright. I was right in my initial assessment of The Byrds as a derivative band, though there’s a quite a bit of their own flavour in here that I don’t recall being on Notorious Byrd Brothers. Maybe I just have less of a stick up my ass 169 albums later. So You Want To Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star is a good opener. It’s some very of-the-time 60s pop rock, though it's admirably competent and has some fun lyrics. Have You Seen Her Face is a good follow-up, though I don’t really have anything else to say about it. It’s just a solid track. Time Between is pretty good – I dig the smooth, country sound and unusual vocal style. Everybody’s Been Burned is an interesting pivot. The sound is pensive, though there’s a little bit of a bossa nova edge that makes the song quite relaxing at the same time. Mind Gardens has an influence I can’t quite put my finger on, though nevertheless it's quite good. There’s some vivid lyrics in there and I enjoy the general mysticism of the piece. Although me and these avyan bastards got off on the wrong foot, I’m willing to enrich myself with some much-needed learning. I’m checking the book. A very technical album from what I’m picking up – a lot of studio trickery and stylistic influences. Yeah, I respect this pick. There’s a lot going on with this one.

Classic early rock and roll. Similar to The Beach Boys but without all the complex harmonies. 27 songs but all under 4 minutes with most under 3, so a quick and easy listen.

Byrds round 2. Melodically this felt more lacking, but overall was sonically sound and interested in sound. Lyrically whimsical and engaging. A fun little ditty of an album. Best tunes: so you want to be a rock ‘n’ roll star, renaissance fair, mind gardens

Byrds- some nice harmonies. favorites were Time Between and So You want to be rock n Roll Star. They kind of overdid it with the backwards guitar. Kind of boring. I prefer the alternate version of Back Pages without the claves.

Its fine, i just found it kind of boring. The songwriting doesnt do it for me and the performance/recording wasnt very exciting. Time between is the only song i knew and probably my favorite one. The reverse guitar on thoughts and words was maybe the only mildly interesting part of the whole record.

I know this wasn't the group's first rodeo and there were some interesting experimental sounds here. Not enough to supplant the great artists from around this time, though. Still a neat lens into early folk & country-inspired rock.

Few interesting experimentation but I did not feel it pushed the 60s sound forward.

Fine offering from the Burd’s but nothing outstanding.

Some good fun pop songs, the backwards songs get annoying pretty quick, on rym I'm giving this a 3,5, here a 3.

Enjoyable, but somewhat repetitive throughout (sans robot sounds).

More psychedelic than anticipated, the end of CTA-102 took me by surprise

Didn’t love it, but it’s fine, I guess. It got dangerously close to country on a few occasions, but it was also kind of weird and experimental at times. Mostly just kind of late 60s hippie rock with a toe dipped in acid. It’s fine for what it is. 2.5

loved it, and sometimes it seemed like harry styles was singing lol

Pretty good. I like their sound and style.

It’s fine, just fine.

-probably my favorite of the three Byrds albums i’ve listened to so far. i like their rock direction much better than their country stuff.. and the direction they eventually went with CSNY -some songs on here were definitely a bit underwhelming but i’d go as far as to say the good ones make up for that -Favorites are Everybody’s Been Burned and Thoughts and Words

Nifty middle there, buuuut I think unfortunately just not quite enough to make it a 4!

When listening to the first track, my first thought was "this was ahead of its time, this probably knocked the socks off some grandmas, but it hasn't aged well." This made it all the more surprising when, after a few tracks, I was still feeling it was ahead of its time - but in the type of way where there's some really clean and interesting sounds on here. Not what I would have expected from the 60s. Ultimately this only really took the album to a three... But still, the first track is deceptively simple.

This has to be among the most interesting '60s rock albums we've had yet. There's a lot of experimentation and effects that sound ahead of their time, like the reversed guitars on Thoughts and Words. It's still a 60s rock album though, so 3 is the best I can do. Shoutout to Glorp on track 3. Standouts: Thoughts and Words • Time Between

Patchy, but very enjoyable at its best.

Some nice psyche tinged 60’s pop

Some of these songs are timeless and sound as fresh as comparable sounding melodies written today.

Released in 1967 as the Byrds were among the California bands leading the march to psychedelia and folk/country rock, this had to be a weird album at the time. I could listen to David Crosby sing all day and, while I'm not a huge Byrds fan, there is no disputing the talent in the band and influence on "60s" rock especially in the time of this album. Like this album a lot and there is a LOT of cool, new (at the time) studio effects showcased on this album - weird noises, reverse tape effect, sitar-like stuff. I love this era of rock experimentation - so much creativity at the time - it's incredible to look back at the top studio albums at the time from the Beatles, Byrds and many other geniuses of the time and what they were doing in the analog days. Highlights for me were hits So You Want to Be a Rock and Roll Star and My Back Pages, loved Everybody's Been Burned and Why and Have you Seen Her Face.

The Byrds are like the Beatles if you take the stuff that's interesting about them away. I don't even know how that works.

5/10 Favorite Song: Time Between Younger Than Yesterday contains the building blocks of a fine folk-rock album, but it rarely combines them into anything memorable. They go for jangle, light psychedelia, and twangy country, but most of it is stale. It is competent and well-played, but the songwriting never rises to the level of feeling important. “Time Between” saves itself with a touch of charm and momentum, but most of it falls flat. There is nothing offensive here, just lots of music that seems happy to fade into the background. It is the type of album that you forget while you are listening to it.

A mix between rock, folk and psychedelia. The most UK-sounding US band I've heard so far.

Yeah, just not my cup of tea.

i like The Byrds more when Gram Parsons is involved but this isn't bad, not bad at all. a little bit of country flavor but this is closer to straight psych rock, with some folk rock thrown in. i liked the simpler songs that preview the future of this band the most. deserves to be one of the 1001? maybe

I know they are super influential to groups like The Beatles. And you can see how their influences pan out in later groups. Still, the songs never hit home for me like some of the groups that followed in their footsteps.

The sound of a certain early era of “rock and roll”. Not lost on me though I don’t love it. BUT - So You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star is a great song to kick off an album with.

Songs I liked: - Have You Seen Her Face - Renaissance Fair - Everybody’s Been Burned - Thoughts and Words

Men dette orker jeg ikke.

Some good vocal harmonies and interesting studio engineering for the time.

A fun listen, you can sense the group is pushing beyond the sunshiney pop rock of the 60s. Good production, sounds killer.

Favorites: Have You Seen Her Face, Everybody’s Been Burned, My Back Pages Not as strong as the last Byrds album this project gave me, but it was pleasant enough. Personally, My Back Pages is much better than the rest of the record as a whole.

Yeah it was fine

Typical 60 th happymusic

If The Beatles were a country band

This was okay - I feel like I've heard more transformative stuff by The Byrds though, so maybe we'll get that album later?

A5, V6.5

Correcto

Initially I was sort of bored with this, feeling like more of the typical 60s folk rock that had brought them to the forefront. But there are a lot of cool little production things, more interesting lyrics, and an interesting development of their sound. The fact that it came out the same year as Sgt. Pepper's still kinda makes it look like a little league swing while the Beatles are blasting homers, but it's still a very cool listen. I'd give it 3.5.

Pretty fun! Lots of imaginitive sounds--could definitely feel it pushing the boundaries of its era.

Enjoyed this. Classic 60s sound. My Back Pages a standout

Not unpleasant

A good mix of pop, psychedelic rock and folk. Obvious Charlatans reference spotted and I think my favourite track is the Dylan cover.

Haven't heard a good Byrds project yet

Yeah, nice.

Perfectly pleasant 60s jangle. Not amazing, but perfectly fine.

Na trenutke fora, na trenutke dosta zvuče kao kopija, ali ono, nisu loši. 3/5, 5.5/10

Enjoyable and very of it's time. The more I listened to it the novelty sort of wore off though. 3⭐️

It’s an okay album. Doesn’t quite hold up next to their piers of the time, but isn’t necessarily bad either. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

6/10 byrd is the word

It was pretty solid and better than expected.

After the Fifth Dimension, I was not excited about this one. Boy did it whelm me. There's something interesting any the Byrds. When they hit they hit well, but I only saw that on Everybody's Been Burned. The rest of the songs were fine or outright boring. This band is the Beatles and the Beach Boys less interesting cousin.

the best Dylan cover band

I can hear and understand the importance of this album, but it still sounds dippy to me.

Pleasant, melodic music with fun vocals, and unlike a lot of 60s' rock, even well produced. Not really my thing, but I still enjoyed it. Nothing all that special as it's still pop rock–esque writing (with folk elements), but the execution is better than average, in my opinion. 7/10

Ok music but not sure if this qualifies as must listen. Maybe it needs multiple listens but not sure if it is very remarkable compared to other 1960s music.

Nice classic old tunes

I wanted to like this more. Just didn’t do a lot for me even though I like a lot of similar music.

Not my favorite from this era but still pretty good.

It's definitely The Byrds, just not definitely that good. But it still feels important somehow.

3 Another Byrds album, and one that immediately follows one we previously had on this list. Did we really need both? Though, while not drastically different, I did like this one a bit more than Fifth Dimension. It’s a little less psychedelic and a little more straightforward classic rock, resulting in some perfectly listenable songs. Not great songs, mind you, but listenable. Well, except for Mind Gardens - seems like David Crosby was having a John Lennon moment there. I think my biggest problem with The Byrds so far has been that they really don’t seem to have an identity of their own. Like, everything I’ve heard from the group so far has felt like a very generic slice of the era, and in the rare instance they have an above-average song, it’s always a cover - My Back Pages in this album’s case (originally by Bob Dylan). Hell, the group’s biggest hit, Mr. Tambourine Man, is also a Dylan cover. Do these guys have nothing to say for themselves? On second thought, if stuff like Mind Gardens are the result of that, maybe sticking to covers is for the best. I’m being a bit harsh - most everything here is decent, but nothing is great. Outside of the Dylan cover, my favorite song was probably So You Want to Be a Rock ‘N’ Roll Star, even though it’s apparently a shot at the Monkees - sorry Byrds, manufactured or not, the Monkees had much better music than you guys ever did. Overall, this one didn’t annoy me as much as past outings, but it’s largely just as forgettable.

This is the 5th album from The Byrds on this list, and I do not think they need 5 albums, maybe 2 at most. That being said this was better than some of the others, but at the end of the day, just pretty middling.

A decent outing - starts of strong but dwindles

I always know an album's good when I subconsciously become engaged and the production makes me stop and wanna rewind. Fire stuff here.

A couple of decent songs but average past that.

Mostly pop-folk music but there are moments where they try to experiment a bit. I appreciate that they didn’t sound like a Renaissance fair like so many other 60s folk groups.

It’s cute. But it’s pretty heavy handed. They had a lot of fun getting high in the recording studio. The harmonies are nice and the music is well written. But sometimes it sounds like folky, trippy Monkees.

My Rating: 3/5 It was a decent album for what it was. 60's rock. Nothing special to write home about. I favorited My Back Pages, because it struck a chord with me. Maybe a bit of nostalgia, I don't know.

Very 1967. But, Clarence White - yay!

Eventually

byrdsrightsactivist gives this album two talons up

Solid 60s rock. Could see myself revisiting this on occasion.

3.5. Short, sweet and to the point.

The thing about this album is that it’s completely fine, but I don’t see why it needs to be here. Calling it bad would be a lie, but it doesn’t really have any reason to be here when Mr. Tambourine Man, which is both more important and just plain better, is here.
