Reviews (page 7 of 8)

I don't know why I didn't like this. I feel as though I should have

Every once in a while this album hits on something really damn good. The riff to Everybody's Been Burned, the verses of Thoughts and Words. But then something always comes and ruins it or undercuts the good stuff. In Everybody's Been Burned it's the awful lyrics. In Thoughts and Words, it's the choruses where they weirdly decide they want to ape The Beatles. Additionally, all the psychedelic backmasking sucks. And what was with that weird alien child at the end of C.T.A. - 102? Overall, this album is just fine. It's very dated in spots, and just doesn't work well to my ears. I don't doubt their need to be included on the list, but five albums seems very excessive.

With everything from classic ’60s pop to mariachi trumpets, backwards sitars, and cosmic sound experiments, Younger Than Yesterday is an album that rarely feels cohesive or complementary

Je suis pas fan j'ai l'impression que c'est les bette en moins bien

I'm not sure what to make of this. My Back Pages might as well be a masterpiece and So You Want To Be A Rock'n'Roll Star is enjoyable but then I'm really not getting into the rest of this slightly forced take on "psychedelic folk rock" with backwards tape etc. Won't be returning.

Just not very interesting

I listened to it.

unnecessary

Trop psychédélique pour moi

Me parece 'una pavada' esta música. Un embole. Rock muy viejo muy guitarrita liviana tilín tilín.

Not my album style :-)

Nope. Just don't like these byrds. I didn't mind this one quite as much as The Notorious Byrd Brothers, and I like the backward guitar soumds. If they just didn't sing maybe.

2 sterne

Classic Byrds. Simple and pretty easy listening. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N ⭐⭐

Not being super familiar with The Byrds, i'm working hard on separating them from The Beatles. Not surprisingly, The Byrds were formed by some dudes in America that loved The Beatles and were already replicating The Beatles music. So they really are the American Great Value version of The Beatles. The Beatles evolved and started innovating in 1966 with Revolver and then Sgt Pepper's LHCB.....and so The Byrds tried too and this album is their attempt. There's kind of a hint the psychedelic elements in Thoughts and Words and CTA- 102....but imo it doesn't work. It just doesn't fit and feels forced. It's just weird listening to this and how influential The Byrds were........except everywhere I turn, everything is Bob Dylan cover, "influenced by Paul McCartney", "Western Version of Revolver", "Influenced by The Beatles". I just can't to it when their entire existence feels like "Beatles for Americans that were too stubborn to like The Beatles because they were British." Then the fact that they couldn't keep members in their band tarnishes it a bit. The reason why they are so overlooked is because nothing about them was original. That said, the music isn't terrible.

Standard 60's rock album. It's fine.

Boring and sounds like the Beatles. Weird sound effects.

Wasn’t for me

I had never heard of The Byrds before, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I had an educated guess based off of the era and album cover. It is as I feared, and the album was very similar to all of the parts of The Beatles that I don’t really care for. Lyrically it’s fine, but musically I found myself bored to tears by most tracks. An initial highlight was My Back Pages, but Brandon said that was a cover, so it may be more of a demerit. I found myself agreeing with one review that stated: “There is nothing new or startling on Younger Than Yesterday.” It could also be the fact that we are coming off of two albums that I loved, so I was ready for an album that I didn’t want to listen to all day long, or at all, really.

2nd of 5 Byrds albums on this list and my feelings are still the same. It starts well with the best track on the album: So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star but then declines thereafter. When they keep the tempo high the songs are enjoyable although I find it hard to care about their harmonies and jangly guitars. I liked the aliens on CTA 102 but the rest of the studio noodling felt band wagon jumping and lacking conviction. There were a couple of slower songs that were particularly dull and drag the score down to a 2.

Not bad. Not much to say about it, though.

Aika vetelää ja melankolista tämäkin, ei tee mieli kuunnella enempää kuin on pakko.

Second Byrds album on this list for me, which means they don't benefit from "first time tolerance" anymore. Overall, I found it less interesting than “The Notorious Byrd Brothers”. The psychedelic vibe is more low-key here, reduced to a couple of weird riffs and background chimes, except maybe in Mind Gardens. Instead, what we get is mostly Beatles-like pop-rock – just not as good as the Beatles. It's not unpleasant to listen, but it clearly lacks personality, and no song really stands out in my opinion. The whole album is a pure product of its time and can hardly be considered “essential”, which is not what I expect from this list. And there are no less than FIVE (!) Byrds albums on the list... The author must think they’re really, really important in the history of music, but I'm not sure I share his enthusiasm. I mean, it's a nice band, but come on... Five albums ? 4/10

Dreary

Songs mostly started promising, but tended to go off the rails in a way I couldn't grasp or appreciate. But the instrumentals outside of that were nice

Holy shit some of these songs are abysmal to listen to. C.T.A. - 102 and Mind Gardens are torture to my ears. Not a single song here I truly am a huge fan of, all of my ratings of the songs are below a 4. The highest songs being a 3.75 (7.5/10) with My Back Pages. The voices are nice to listen to and I like the melody and instrumentals until they go absolutely apeshit. Half of the album is a 3 and half the album is a 1.

It went too deep into either bad country or bad psychedelia for my taste. The straight up jangly guitar based pop was ok for its time.

Boring. Too boring to be annoying. I zoned out after 3 minutes.

It's alright. I would never listen to again. Stand out song - My back pages (which they didn't write)

Short songs quite samey

This was an alright album having in the background. Nothing too exciting but it sounds pretty alright. Possibly maybe a bit outdated nowadays, but it's still listenable.

The Byrds had some amazing songs, none of which are in here. A solid little album though, but you can hear they needed a little more time to cook.

It's okay, probably would be better in a different environment. It's not great as a background while working.

Getting an album called "Younger Than Yesterday" on my birthday  Anyway, this was just a bit "eh", although, fortunately, it does come in at a very respectable sub-30 minutes. It's a jubilant folk/country rock album that manages to remain on the right side of my personal threshold, without captivating me to any great extent. It features an alumni from earlier in my challenge in Hugh Masekela, who does contribute a couple of nice tricks to the experience, but it's not one I can see myself wanting to repeat in future.

Interesting album, very much of its time but I fairly enjoyable listen. Lots of short tunes which was typical of the time and includes the standard psychedelic inspired track.

eh wasn't really into it.

This psychedelic folk-rock album surrounds jangling guitars and tight bass lines with a hazy swirl of sound, while vocals drift between earnest clarity and laid-back detachment, creating a musical carpet that sometimes feels like it’s about to swallow me whole or suffocate me in my sleep.

I just can't with these bland, samey, dime-a-dozen albums anymore here

My baseball team just lost their lead in game 7 of the ALCS there is no way you’re telling me I have to listen to another fucking Byrds album now. “My Back Pages” is the best song here. I am inconsolable, 2/5 stars

This one is not essential listening unless you’re looking at the history of the Byrds. 2

Not bad but not really grabbing me

One Thousand & One Beatles rip-offs

Did anything good happen in the 1960s?

Not quite

Mostly just bland, but WHAT was going on with CTA 102??? My Back Pages is an all-timer though.

This is the fifth (FIFTH!?) album I’ve gotten by The Byrds, and I can now say with confidence that they embody everything I hate about this era of pop-rock. They don’t have the catchiness of their rock and roll predecessors nor the experimental curiosity of their contemporaries. Their psychedelic influences are surface level at best, suggesting that they themselves don’t know how to use them beyond trendy imitation. Take, for example, this verse off Renaissance fair: “I smell cinnamon and spices / I hear music everywhere / All around kaleidoscope of colour / I think maybe I’m dreaming.” Geddit? He’s high. He’s SINGING about being high. Pretty groundbreaking for ‘67, right? Mind Gardens is also unbelievably bad, with clumsy poetry and a reversed recording of a guitar that drills into your skull. It’s lobotomy without the bliss that follows. When it isn’t riffing off far better bands, it just sounds goddamn boring. Maybe I’m being harsh because I’m in the last stretch of albums, or maybe —just maybe— these guys don’t deserved the amount of representation they got in the book.

I'm not sure how many Byrds albums are on this list, but it's probably a couple too many. This one can be dropped for sure. Nothing really stood out and some of the songs were experimental to the point of being annoying

A perfectly okay album

I just don’t find this late ’60s sound all that interesting. There are a few decent moments, but most of it comes off as dull. “C.T.A.-102” at least stands out as something different, but that doesn’t necessarily make it good.

weaker beetles emmulator

Just could not appreciate this.

2 tedious

ahh yes the classic hard pan stereo mixing technique. i fucking hate it

I dont think this was a good as Mr. Tambourine Man, but it was under 30 minutes which is always nice.

When the Byrds hit their groove, which they do a couple times on this album, you cannot beat it for distilled 60s sound. Psychedelia linked with country and an undercurrent of light jazz is a mainline sound for me. But this is also pre-the album as a thing era. As such there isn’t much that binds this together as a statement. The embryonic explosion of 60s influence I still love. Plus they made a living off of good Dylan covers. And I love Dylan.

Chyrp chyrp

3eme album proposé pour ce groupe, après 2 autres que je n'avais pas apprécié (notés 2/5). Celui-ci n'est pas plus intéressant, il ne mérite pas une meilleure note. =>2/5

I liked a lot of the songs, but some of them were just absolutely not it.

Pretty standard 60s rock with some weird songs thrown in for good measure that just make the whole thing a bit worse. I love some good 60s rock and roll, so I'm conflicted, but the bad ones really drug it down.

Throughly not impressed. Beach boys meet Beatles but forgot how to make music?

Täysin sama mielipide kuin toisestakin The Byrdsin albumista: Taustamusiikkina meni aivan hyvin. En valitsisi tätä itse kuunteluun, mutta en välittömästi vaihtaisi kanavaakaan. Kuulosti 60-luvulta.

Some of the songs on this were fine, the rest of them were like they were trying to be annoying. I know they were ‘trying stuff out’ or whatever but I don’t want to hear the bloody reverse taping or whatever the hell was going on on CTA- 102. Not a huge fan. Specific rating - 2.2 Fav song- my back pages Least fav- CTA - 102

After listening to this, I do not not feel younger than yesterday. In fact, I feel 30 years older. This kind of bored me to tears.

Boooooooooooring

Sure, throw another psychedelia record on the pile, who cares I liked the last three songs, but not enough to give this a higher score

Yes, Gene Clark was a fuckup and addict but he was the real heart and soul of this band because oh man is this listless. Gone are the grand sweep of guitars and wistful harmonies, and in are weird pop touches to try to be hip for no good reason. If the bad rap on the Byrds was that they were just a Dylan cover band, this record doesn’t help because they only great song is their cover of “My Back Pages”. It’s not that this album is altogether terrible - it’s just that you expect a LOT more from The Byrds.

This is a decent album. It feels a bit derivative. It also lacks cohesion where some songs are straight pop songs and then others are psychedelic trips.

Have You Seen Her Face and CTA -102 are fun, but nothing I really need. 2/5 stars.

Every 60's "psychedelic" rock album I get on here further solidifies my hatred for this era of music.

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Mid tier late 60’s album. They have so many better.

Couple cool songs but overall it fell flat. I know they have better albums than this one. It felt like they were trying to hard to be psychedelic or something. Didn’t feel sincere. Kinda boy band vibes.

I find this so boring

I thought I would enjoy this one more, 60s experimental rock is right up my alley. Had it play through a couple of times and it was fine, but no moments of pause or standout for me. Maybe I have to revisit this, or another one of their albums.

It was ok

Jingly Jangly Byrds-iness. Nice enough but no real stand out songs. And maybe it's my mood, but I found the the lack of variation in sound a bit annoying after a while. Better in small doses, probably.

This was okay.

More jangly psychedelic rock that I probably didn’t need to listen to before I die.

This was ok, right up until the track that was backwards (a pet peeve).

2 Byrds albums in 3 days only goes to reconfirm the poor first inpression. This one seemed to have all of the thinness of sound and tweeness, but with added experimentation that doesn't work and general noodling that is redundant.

dnf. not my cup of tea but can see the influence on music

oh 60s folk rock...

Strong Beatles vibes. Less catchy.

Fine 60's Pop album with a little psychedalia thrown in. It has it's moment. This review if for The Byrds.

Better than the last Byrds album I had 10 days ago b. Still very Byrdsy. 2.75

Did not enjoy this one at all. This felt like a beatles/beach boys fever dream. Might have to come back to this one since everyone seems to be rating it so high.

I hate the Byrds so much. They are literally just the shitty Beatles and don't even pretend to be anything else. Only problem is, The Beatles are actually good and keep evolving to be better. These guys are just content with soulless cash grabs and I'll rate them accordingly.

Such a frustrating album. At the start I was really enjoying it and thought it was a dead cert 4 or even 5 star. Then Mind Gardens came on and I didn’t like it one bit. The rest of the album was decent enough but I never got the enjoyment of the first part of the album back. Top Track - Have You Seen Her Face

ok, don't like the background music much, nice vibe tho, like the louder voice than the song in background, probably would listen again- want to be 'so you want to be a rockstar' one; 'have you seen her face' - pretty good, great intro but guitar solo is a bit odd. generally 2/5 I think, first one was good

There's a lot of Byrds and their various members solo work in this list. This is not terrible, it's a bit more psychedelic than some of their folkier albums I've heard already. I think I prefer the Gene Clark written songs from their earlier work.. these tracks didn't resonate too much with me. I had a weird feeling of them sounding unfinished, like some of these songs don't go anywhere and end as soon as you think it's starting to develop. Found it an unsatisfying listen

idk many songs sounded similar

I try to like these guys, and I want to like them, but their sound is just not for me. Not to mention they often do too many weird things with otherwise decent songs.

It was fine

What a surprise, another Byrd’s album. I think Sweetheart of the Rodeo is my sleeper favorite. This is better than the Fabulous Byrd Brothers and Mr Tamborine Man. I dug the horns and percussion on So You Wanna Be A Rock n Roll Star. Renaissance Fair was hilariously stupid. Would not likely revisit, but better than their other 2 albums I’ve listened to on this list (but not as good as Sweetheart…)

So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star feels like a shot at The Monkeys and their rise to fame, C.T.A.-102 a pleaseant song about aliens that halfway trough is taken hostage by an alien talking trough. There's some experimentation in this album, but it wasn't good enough for me, sorry 2 byrds out of 5

not psychedelic enough! come back when you're at least this psychedelic [gestures towards a sign that says "you must be this psychedelic to call yourself psychedelic"]

It was ok

The standout song on this is "My Back Pages"--a Bob Dylan cover. The original tunes, while surely innovative for their time, do nothing for me. I did appreciate the variety in the tracks, so each song was distinct, but overall this album did not capture me.

Great harmonies, mediocre songs. Next....

I think I hate the second half of this album. There are some good songs, but quite a few I just cannot get into.

I'd like to get into the 60's psychedelic rock stuff but I just can't find anything to inspire me. There is nothing bad about this album, but nothing that makes me want to revisit or say "hey, check out this/these songs". Thought So You Want to Be a Rock & Roll Star was the best song off the album, then just a a bunch a songs that were just OK. 17 songs in 46 minutes was impressive. Not sure I could have handles this for an hour. Right down the middle for me here. 2.5

Fairly unpenetrable

I remember enjoying this more but I felt it was a little overwrought in several areas. It's nice when a Byrd's song is around. A whole flock can be a bit much.

My patience is wearing thin. There are too many Byrds entries on this goddamn list, and this SURELY has to be the least deserving.

Ich bin böse gelangweilt

Not my piece of pie.

2/5 not bad. aged.

It starts with my favorite topic, "being super successful actually sucks though, and making money means you're a sellout." I'm exaggerating a bit, but the rest of the album didn't improve much for me. I don't really like the sound they are going for.

As usual, the early Byrds are good at Dylan covers and not much else.

Well well well... if it isn't my arch nemesis of this list the mf Byrds. These guys wouldn't be living rent free in my mind if they didn't have like 15 albums on this list (including solo and other related bands). If they only had 1-3 I would say "that was kind of bland" and then move on and forget about them. BUT THEY JUST KEEP COMING BACK. Ok time to talk about this album. This is by far thier best one yet (still not great), there is actual experimentation and some unique ideas. Overall it is still pretty boring, but atleast it isn't mindless country yet. Nevermind as soon as I typed that they started playing country... The second half of this album loses anything that made the first half interesting and becomes a slog that will never end. Mid 2.

This was a lot weaker than I was anticipating. Didn’t enjoy it at all other than the cover of My Back Pages. Listened to CSNY Four Way Street right after and I can confirm this is a poor effort.

Psychedelic sound Byrds are my least favorite I guess... preferring Dylan cover Byrds and Christian Country Byrds.

Hey, at least this song's not too bad...oh, it's a Dylan cover...

Not my jam.

A bit boring, some fine tracks.

Okay album. It started out as what I would expect from The Byrds with jangly guitars and lush harmonies. I was okay with the country western influences. With the more experimental, jazz and psychedelic cuts, I grew less enamored with the album.

vogul rocknroll star findi d trumpete na cool aber nüt crazy have you seen her face seeehr warm de stereo killt mich gad chli am 12i am aabig hahahaha ja cta 102 het das nöd besser gmacht aber sehr intressant ÜHHH DIE STIMM NEI ÄÄÄ NEI ahh aber younger than yesterday funny titel renaissance fair huere schön! und het auchli öppis verträumts he ja scho cool wenn sache hinderschiilaufed aber weniger ahstrengend machts s ganze nöd mindgardens ARRRSSSCHHH he das git vlt gad en stern abzug poah kei ahnig, entweder isches seicht oder so "kreativ", dass es doch ener nervig isch. han lang welle es 3 geh, aber bi mind gardens lupftsmer glaub de deckel

Byrds guitar starting to sound way better on this one, held back by corny pop song structures and harmonies. They only do one Dylan cover! But OF COURSE the title is taken from the Dylan cover. The Byrds needed to go more country to get good. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Musically I liked more of this than I expected to, but it’s so hard for me to get in to this style of vocals. Hearing the Everly Brothers recently helped me understand that a bit. Did a lot of these early psych-ish things take vocal inspiration from Everly Brothers? Before they realized you could just yell and scream and stuff and it would be better? I think they did.

Two hits, one a Dylan cover and the other was just OK at best. The rest of the songs were pretty much awful to forgettable tyrds.

Didn't need Younger Than Yesterday, would happily never listen to another Byrds album. Half an hour of nothingness, 2, next.

Instantly forgettable

This one is for the Byrds.

Beginning to find all these Byrds albums jnsipidly similar

Ugh. Big year for this list. Explosion of mediocrity. Ok. Open mind... I listened all the way through despite protest from the household and comments such as "This must be your album of the day. I can tell because it's terrible". It's hard to argue. Read this list, there was a lot of music around in 1967. Keep looking. This is not one I'll ever come back to. Two stars.

More folksy than I usually listen to but less folksy than I was expecting. This album makes interesting use of the stereo soundscape, and it's cool to hear their experimentation in instrumentation and sound recording develop throughout. I liked a few songs and will probably listen again.

Meh not arousing at all

Not for me

I always think I should like the Byrds more than I actually do. A little bit goes a long way with them. They've got a couple of good songs here but also a lot of mediocre songs that weren't that interesting.

The Byrds two days in a row? I didn’t enjoy them that much the first damn time!

I felt that, when Eva articulated her love to Wall-e in that 3rd song

A bit tedious. Slow and ploddy

snoozefest... ike they felt obligated to make an album.

On one hand, I respect the experimentation on this album, but on the other, I can't see any of its value. It was annoying and unpleasant to listen to at times, but mostly, it just confused me. Don't get me wrong; there are some good songs on here, but I wish the experimenting that went on didn't feel so lackluster. Top 3 Fav: My Back Pages, So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star, and Have You Seen Her Face Top 3 Worst: C.T.A. - 102, Thoughts And Words, and Mind Gardens 2.50/5

the byrds had those dylan covers - not sure they even play on those - and they have eight miles high - other than that…there’s an awful lot of the worst kind of pretentious 60s naïveté

Interesting, as I’d never listened to this band other than incidentally. I read that they were meant to be as influential on subsequent music, particularly Alt Country, as another band of their era, the Beatles. I just didn’t hear it here. I think some of the issue was production, as the mix often sound wrong to my ears. But mostly I just don’t connect with their style nor with their songwriting. ‘My Back Pages’ is nice and my favorite (at least before it devolved into a meander on the sitar), wasn’t even on the main album, ‘Old John Robertson’.

I could never get into this band because they’re so bland

Very forgettable and uninspiring. Could be one of countless rock bands from the 60's.

This was kind of dull, soon tired of listening to backwards stuff, or songs about garden walls.

Dylan-vetonaula: check. Melodisesti perinteisempi B-puoli: joo. Vakavaa vuoden 67 oireilua läpi LP:n: jep.

trotos

Fine but unremarkable

Liked the singles. B side probably is preferred. There were some songs that were auditory torture on my heard phones. Will not listen to the album in full again to avoid those songs.

Tyckte detta var tråkigt men inte direkt jättedåligt. Några okej låtar och några bajslåtar, t.ex Mind Gardens. Fett meh. Favvolåt: Have You Seen Her Face

Title track was catchy, otherwise forgettable in my opinion

Nah. Old 60’s “rocker” sound but also some bagpipes?

This is now the third 60s album in a row. I suppose this is the best of the bunch, I enjoyed the more psychedelic elements compared to the more typical beatles-fare from this time. Still pretty boring though.

Nowhere near what I thought it might have been, no wonder they all went off and did better stuff

I'd heard of the Byrds and thought they had some bigger names with them than I see. Maybe I'm thinking of the Yardbirds. Right away the first track sounded like people burning alive. It is pretty amusing how the song takes a jab at a band like the Monkees while I was thinking the same thing about the Byrds while hearing this track. Irony? As I continued listening I thought it's probably already been done, but a fun article title would be 'The Byrds and the Beatles' to talk about their similarities or rather the failure of an attempt by the Byrds to approach that level. This album just stinks. CTA-102? I get the idea, but it's all so shallow compared to other bands at the time. Favorite track "Why?" Has some interesting guitars 1.5/5

The vocal harmonies here were just made for country, but they insist on playing all this psychedelic crap. Gram Parsons was the best thing to happen to this band.

A little bland, I’ll probably forget about this album tomorrow

I didn't dislike it, but I didn't like it that much either. All the songs sound kind of the same. I am well aware of how influential this band is, but personally I don't see why.

It was weird. Maybe I don’t like psychedelic rock.

ok album, good gutar but that's about it, nothing memorable

A sort of cross between the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, but not in a good way.

Sort of a Beatles clone, didn't really do anything for me. The best song was a bob Dylan cover and it largely blended into one. It was short and inoffensive and that's about the best I can say about it.

I liked parts of this album but it mostly felt like I was listening to a poor mans Beatles. Highlights: Have You Seen Her Face My Back Pages

The Byrds are just a bit dull, aren't they. The exception being the alien voice at the end of C.T.A. - 102 which is incongruous in it's weirdness. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: My Back Pages Date listened: 26/04/24

Oof I did not really enjoy this one. The sound and melody wore on me pretty quick. I hate most psychadelic type music so this definitely didnt help. Pretty easy pass.

Sounds like a discount version of the Beatles, not a fan.

i dont care

Another mediocre 60's album, nothing really stood out to me aside from the most popular track, My Back Pages. I'm sure it was influential for its time but in this day and age it's another a blip in the vast musical ocean.

I loved "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" when it came up on this list so I was quite happy to see this one come up. However unfortunately this just was not it for me. I liked the last one because it seemed like a nice take on psych rock which almost sounded a little like early shoegaze in parts. But this one just feels a little like a simple pop song compilation with a few quirky bits to keep the psych rock label. That wouldn't be bad if they were great pop songs but not many really stuck out to me they were just alright, and it doesn't help the fact that the best song and the song that relates to the album title "My Back Pages" is actually just a cover to a Bob Dylan song? I don't mind that they use songwriters, Carole King wrote a few songs for them too and that is okay, but the title track being a cover not just written for them but someone else's song, permission or not, does not feel like a good characteristic for an album. I sound harsh but I still enjoyed the sound just not enough, 1 star would be too harsh so 2 is fine. Stand out songs: Have You Seen Her Face Renaissance Fair My Back Pages Edit* So I looked up the ratings on rym and people love this album. What am I missing? I haven't seen many good points only ones I disagree with but it is all subjective I guess. No one has changed my mind.

Overrated. Too much Harmony. Folk Rock should not be encouraged.

It seems this was quite ambitious for the time, however I don't think that carries over to the modern day.

Feels very mid? It has some good parts, but I don't want to listen to this again.

Didn't finish. Wasn't keen so far.

Other bands did the psychedelic thing better. Like A LOT better. If this is their response to Revolver, they fell way short in their reply.

C'était pas vraiment aussi cool que c'que j'pensais.

The Byrds are a very influential band. Sweetheart of the Rodeo is a great album. I like jangly folk/country rock. Plus, I'm sure 60’s teeny-boppers appreciated being able to hear Pat Boone versions of Dylan songs so they could feel like they were super groovy without having to listen to the voice of the voice of their generation. But Younger than Yesterday is not doing it for me. A fair amount of this album is straight up lame (looking at you "Mind Gardens"), and when it isn't lame it just isn't substantial enough to warrant being on a list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die. I'm not discounting that the Byrds are an important band that made some great songs and inspired some of my favorite bands of all time (REM, Big Star, The Jayhawks), but this album is not very good.

It's not really my style, even with the random alien voices. Biggest problem that I have with highly influential bands from the early era of rock is that I like the bands that they influenced more.

More and more Byrds :(

du country / folk / rock des années 1960. rien qui me fait plus aimer le groupe qu'auparavant. 5.5/10

4.5/10

I never really took to the "pop" sound of the 60's and this is what's on this Album. Did find two good songs - Everybody's been burned and Thoughts and Words. So, for those two redeeming tracks it gets 2 stars rather than 1

This was an enjoyable listen, but not particularly appealing to me in any one direction. I appreciate this album and the musical dexterity and creativity on display, but I didn't ever get in to the groove with it.

It was alright. My Back Pages was fine. I don’t think any songs will go on my playlist tho. Maybe will listen again.

Some good tunes but this album is way too long

tries to bring in some interesting sounds and instruments I guess but just becomes irritating

This "project" has made me hate The Byrds. Yes, they have some all-time great songs and even at their worst they aren't that bad, but overall I find them to be pretty "meh" and I'm so sick of getting their albums. Enough already. I already hoped that the last one was the final entry but I might scream if I get another.

Perhaps the least-focused and engaging Byrds album on the list so far, which is saying something. Running out of things to say about these middle of the road 70s albums, everything’s blending together and it’s hard to put together specific cons other than me just being tired of albums like this.

It's not exactly Sergeant Pepper or Pet Sounds. Musically it's quite a mess. I found it a tough listen with some pretty basic production. The songs are half decent, but it sounds like there was a push to try new production methods.

Meh. It was OK. Not a fan. Will likely never intentionally listen to a Byrd’s song ever.

Ok, some of it was interesting but didn't really catch my ear

rather uninteresting compared to the album they made after this which was pretty enjoyable. couple decent tracks in the intro and "thoughts and words" but the rest is samey and forgettable.

4th album by this band, and whilst this is better than some of the offerings on here it's still not amazing. Some songs are instant skips, but appreciate it's experimental, some tunes are pretty good like "Renaissance Fair" 2.4

Except for the first track, I didn't care for this at all.

This is one incredible interpretation of a Bob Dylan song and then an album of filler.

Just didn't enjoy it. The bad brought down the good.

niet speciaal

Nee deze voelde ik niet helemaal. Had niets speciaals

Hard for me to listen and not hate the very hard-panning of the instruments. Man is it grating... Yea this album was alright for me, the songs didn't really blow me away but they weren't terrible. The mix choices unfortunately permeated throughout the listening experience.

chill hippies, solid 60s

Meh, pretty dull and partly responsible for the explosion of terrible jangle-pop nonsense yha followed. Not for me

An improvement on the last album I heard by them. That’s hardly a ringing endorsement though.

This just didn’t engage me at all

Was lovely in the background of Crash Bandicoot but upon further listening I just wished it was The Beatles Favorite song: It Happens Each Day

The first track was good, got me excited for a cheery 60's pop/rock album, but then it devolved into so much psychedelic experimental bullshit that I just got sick of it. That one track with the weird voices speaking what sounded like a made up chipmunk language... WTF was that?!? The Byrds needed to just stick with sweet, wistful pop/rock jams and be cool.

Not a fan of this album.

Diverse group of 60s pop tunes that remind me of the Monkees. Typical pop instrumentation, great vocals, but overall kind of bland.

Not really a fan

another Beatles inspired group that didnt have any interesting songs

It's close to being good. Very good when it wants to be, very boring for the most part.

Too psychedelic for my taste...

Kinda boring except for the sonic experiments

I see why 1967 liked this one.

Track 1: So You Want to Be a Rock ‘N’ Roll Star This song opens with sounds that resemble armpit farts. There’s a lot of chaos with horns, children screaming, and a mediocre song. Sounds like diet Beach Boys. Track 2: Have You Seen Her Face The lyrics describe the way wattpad explains what eyes look like. This is fine. I like the guitar solo. This song is like the typical 60s pop that you think of. Track 3: C.T.A. - 102 This is a little radio opening kind of song. It has little beep boops. It’s kinda annoying. Oh those are aliens. I was so confused. Track 4: Renaissance Fair I like this song. The vocals are cool and the instrumentals are groovy. I could casually listen to this. Track 5: Time Between This song is fine. It’s a country bumpkin sounding campfire song. Track 6: Everybody’s Been Burned Good song to fall asleep to. Great guitar work. Track 7: Thoughts and Words This is another boring song. I think I just heard someone light a joint. Track 8: Mind Gardens Snooooore. I like the weird backwards reverb sound. Nvm, the beeps get so annoying. Track 9: My Back Pages I like the guitar work on this song. I actually think the lyrics are interesting. Idk what they’re about. Track 10: The Girl With No Name I like this. It’s poppy and makes me wanna skip. This is nice sounding. Track 11: Why Idk what this song is about. Honestly thought it was a pedo song at first. This is ok Track 12: It Happens Each Day This is chill. I don’t have much to say abt it. Track 13: Don’t Make Waves Ok this is straight up Beach Boys. They are talking about the BEACH. Track 14 and 15 are the couple of songs I already heard Track 16: Lady Friend This is ok lol. Beach boys vibe again. Track 17: Old John Robertson Another bumpkin song.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it was ok, had a charming feel to it and sounded alright Favourite song: Track 9 - My Back Pages

Damn I really didn't like this album. My Back Pages is an excellent song, and the Byrds definitely made it better than Dylan's original. But the rest? Not so much.

This album was bad with a couple redeeming songs. So much backwards guitar loops!

Some good, some not so good. I would give it 2.5 if I could 2/5

It is impossible to be younger than yesterday. 🤔

Note for me. Nope.

started hot then gradually got worse

Track 2 is super weird

Rallattelua. Ei ihan mun juttu mut ei ny mitää skeidaa kumminkaan. Tuli välil vähä semmonen fiilis et Beatlesin levyiltä ois otettu sitä harmaata massaa mikä ei erotu joukosta ja tehty niistä levy. Paras biisi: Thoughts and Words Huonoin biisi: C.T.A. - 102

Not for me, i also didn’t like the german minion in one of the songs

I liked a lot of the singing, but then they just play on the guitar for ages really random and not needed… sounds messy

Didn’t really get on with this sorry

5 albums on the list? Sheesh.

A real yawner. Don’t judge albums by their covers, but take it from me that this cover is an accurate depiction of what you’re in for.

Not feeling this one. Maybe I've just found a bad copy of the album, but I'm not big on the psychedelic sounds.

Goddamit. Put this on yesterday, didn't look at the track listing. It was 17 tracks long and around the 12th track I was like "Jesus, when is this gonna be over." And of course, it's a 10 track album in a 17 track sack thanks to streaming music. But anyway, sounds like the Byrds were getting into experimenting with sonic textures and, I mean, awesome. Enjoy. But Mind Gardens is rough going. The alien voices on CTA 102 are cartoonish. This one has several okay songs. My Back Pages and So You Want To Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star are the best and that's not really a super high bar. But this is a solidly 1967 album. It feels and sounds of that year and it doesn't seem like it traveled far beyond it.

That 60's sound is just okay to me. Those first couple songs sounded great, but that sound just doesn't inspire me. I understand that era is the greatest era in music, but it just doesn't grab me.

Yes was ok

Tedious. Spotify says they were more responsible than any other band or artist for the entire folk rock movement. Fuckers.

Has the classic 1960s rock sound which admittedly, I am not a fan of. This album is a pretty easy listen and the best song by far is the Bob Dylan cover. Everything else was just sort of there. Nothing really caught my attention.

After listening to a few Byrds albums, I'm beginning to think I don't like The Byrds

Somehow the whole album is a 50:50 split of happy, airy harmonies (a bit like the Beatles) or absolute dead grinds (Simon and Garfunkel making love to a cat - bagpipes? Wtf?). I had to skip some as they rubbed me the wrong way. My Back Pages VS Mind Gardens illustrate my example fairly well.

Nyt ei Byrdsi yltäny oikein millekään tasolle. Vaisu, väljä ja väritön kuten hyvä ystäväni Jorma Uotila sanois.

Aika perus 60-luvun albumi, nothing special to see hear

Eh. The Beatles meets Jefferson Airplane?

Pretty meh. Nothing that caught my attention or made me want to return to it.

CTA-102 guest starring the Minions? What the hell was that? I just had a Crosby, Stills & Nash album yesterday. This is exactly the same thing. I guess I should see who the guitarist for The Byrds is. Oh, it's fucking David Crosby again. The most important man in musical history according to this book. Is he the guy who looks like Patrick Bateman cosplaying as Heisenberg on the album cover? There's 5 Byrds albums on this list for some reason. Who the hell are The Byrds? Who the hell is David Crosby? Where is my wife? Oh yeah, the music. It was boring 60s folk rock. Not horrible, but not for me.

It was just OK. A bit too floaty for me...

Meh, pas grand chose de spécial sur cet album, j'oubliais qu'il jouait

Mid 60s californian rock. The album sounds pretty generic for its time, and I can't find anything that hasn't been done better by other groups. Disappointing. 2/5

Bukkake for the soul

they sounded a little similar to the beatles for a little but they got extremely annoying and their voices were just no.

Estuvo ok. Lo escuché la semana pasada y ya lo olvidé. No es mi estilo, la verdad

Not great.

Fine, would rather listen to Dylan

A bit tough to get through parts of it. Kind of just an uninteresting album. 4/10.

No surprises here. Its a Byrds album. Thats it.

Overrated sixties coat tail riding musicians continue on with their bland melody free store brand psychedelic rock. Probably far out if you were about 8 when this released. It just sounds dated now. It says a lot when their best song is written by someone who isn't in the group and they have the cheek to edit out verses. Lame. Best Tracks: So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star; Have You Seen Her Face; My Back Pages

Pretty meh. Nothing that caught my attention or made me want to return to it.

Late 60s psychedelic and jazz influenced rock... ...possibly influential, not really my thing.

couldn't finish

Interesting through headphones with the stereo mix. Rich sounding guitars, bass dancing around and some airy-fairy vocals. Didn't hate it, but didn't notice when the album ended.

Ugh The Byrds. Feels like this album is being pulled in a few different directions, but not all of them bad. At best there are tracks that sound like what The Beatles were doing two years ago. The worst parts are horrible though, the experimental psychedelic technique is sound amateurish and cack-handed.

S obzirom da sam bila prevelikodušna s prošlim albumom, ali svejedno mi se jako svidia no možda neka 4.2 ocjena. Ovaj doduše nimalo ne vajbam, malo psihodelično s country vibrom.. Nisam oduševljena

Hmm....

Inoffensive but I didn't feel like there was much to hold my interest here.

Solid!

Oh good, the Byrds again! Just what this list needed. 2/5 and go fuck yourself.

Average at best

Feels like we’ve already had this album a dozen times 😂

American, 70s, Rock/Pop + Multiinstrumetal = Male - Oldish, boring {0/17}

Contains some of the birds hits. Worth being on this list?

It was ok

First listen. 2/5. Couple good songs.

Do you remember the middle school dance? You know when you had your first dance with someone else. Where do you put your hands? Who leads…and what is leading anyway? You try to slowly move in a circle while your partner tries the lady/right shuffle. You step on each other’s toes. Oops…sorry. Do you stare them in the eyes? Do you look at other people dancing to try and figure out what to do? Do you put your head on their shoulder? How much space do you leave between you? A bible’s width? Or are you pressed up against each other? Everyone in this experience is doing something they want to and are excited to experience. Yet it takes two to tango, and the dance is out of synch because you don’t know how to dance with a partner … it’s a bit awkward. That’s this album for me. The various parts are enjoyable…at times anyway. But I swear none of them are NSYNC (get it? in synch). It’s awkward. They needed tighter arrangements and a conductor.

they rock, but I got bored.

10th August 2021 Smashed this out on my phone at lunch. Had book club up at Erica's in the evening for Before the Coffee gets cold. The Byrds have done Dylan, now they try to do the Beatles. Are they a cover band?

Another Byrds album and I like it much less than the previous one. The songs aren't interesting and the dissonance just sounds bad. I enjoyed the Bob Dylan cover My Back Pages a lot. That song by itself is a 4.5 star song to me. But the rest of the album really isn't good.

Beatles-esque rock from the same era. A bit of the overly happy stuff. The Beatle Monkey's!!! Interesting in the same ways but comparatively mundane from a greatness point of view. Still solid overall.

What a strange, short album. It has the typical 60s chords, but then tosses in random trumpet, static, and alien voices. I don't know what the hell I'm listening to.

Bored by track 3

A decent album but it felt repetitive at times and didn't have a great standout

Album just ok. No stand out tracks

Some nice psychedelic moments but the rest is cut and paste era specic rock.

60s tripe - worse than their second album - how did this band get two on this list

wasn't very memorable for me. I think I would've been more engaged if we didn't have the Beatles the day before

I've always had a soft spot for So You Want To Be A Rock 'N Roll Star, with it's comically rolling bassline, Latin beat and sardonic lyrics. Have You Seen Her Face has a lovely vocal arrangement and is Beatlesque in the best sense. My Back Pages is a stellar Dylan cover. And the Byrd's harmonies are just gorgeous. At their best, the Byrds' combination of folk rock, country, psychedelia and pure pop is a delight. But I'm sorry to say that Younger Than Yesterday is not a very good album. The attempts at psychedelia here are amateurish and juvenile, ruining the otherwise fine C.T.A. - 102. Roger McGuin's attempts at lead guitar throughout are an embarrassment. And other than the first two songs and the Dylan cover, the songwriting is weak. Two stars for the three strong tunes mentioned, zero stars for the rest. 2/5

Had to listen a couple of times, didn't dislike any songs but not many stuck out to me during casual listening. Really like the Back Pages cover Saved: My Back Pages

Beatles-lite. Rock and roll sure was different back in the day! Nothing really stood out to me. Weirdly as I was typing this a song called 'My Back Pages' sounded nice. Most listened to song on the album on Spotify. Always find it weird that these songs stand out, full albums are built around them.

I find it difficult to rate albums on their musical merits alone and ignore the dated sound or if you don't like the genre

A rollercoaster. Pretty high highs and also some low lows. There was some good stuff here but not enough to keep me engaged throughout the whole album.
