Reviews (page 8 of 13)
It's alright. At first, I thought it was just traditional blues rock stretched out a bit. Well executed but not really bringing anything fresh. Side 3 won me over somewhat with it's more obvious jazz and funk influences. Had a Santana vibe at times. Definitely the best part. Boy they do go on though don't they?
Decent listen.
This project has taught me that I love a live album.
IIII meannn ok, rock. third song - like it. forth also, cool vibe. okay other songs are quite cool. like very interesting, fist two songs made me thought I wouldn't like this album, but its quite good. tracks I like the most: 3–6.
Very good blues just too much for me
lotta guitar, ery nice ery dad
Blues de agradable escucha. Funciona bien como hilo musical.
Was not what I was expecting real bluesy tones. I did not however appreciate 14 min tracks but I do think its a decent album more of a background affair though
• 3/5 • Hadn’t realized that they were such a jam band • Fun listen and wild to hear some Blues standards expanded upon in such a southern rock / jazzy way
All timey blues. Cool. Not amazing.
first concert album!
Bluesier than I expected. Very high quality jamming.
OK well, bluesy country rock jams are not at all my thing, but I can still recognize that these are expert musicians who are playing their asses off.
Classic Allman Brothers—bluesy, jazzy, southern rock straight out of Macon, Georgia. Enjoyed it, but better to listen to while on a boat. More interested in other things, let’s get looking.
too long. impressive musicianship though.
Enjoyable, tight, and self-indulgent.
Look it’s blues wankery all around, and there’s probably no reason to sit through 20 minute jams, but I’ll be damned if the Allmans don’t keep it entertaining. Gregg Allman has such backwater Georgia running through his veins that this hopped up white boy can pass as a real blues man. And then there’s the guitar, the whole band, and the good vibes throughout. Their shift to jazzier and southern fried pop rock is more quintessential to me, and this isn’t really their best stuff. But it is a document of a band at their absolute damn peak and feeling every minute of it.
Better than I anticipated. It does have energy.
I can appreciate the musical prowess of this album and this band at the height of its powers....but, damn, it bores me. Never been a jam band guy and this is probably the grandaddy of all jam band albums. I preferred the 4-5 minute songs over the 19-21 minute extended jams. But I'm probably in the minority on that.
Standouts Hot 'Lanta
Was okay to have on in the background.
Musicianship is quite good. Stormy Monday is. Most definitely my favorite one on the record. Mixed pretty well for a live album. Tracks are a bit long for my taste. I love hearing musicians cut loose but I'm not the biggest fan of hearing 20 minutes of jamming at times. While impressive, there is an aspect of this album where I'm like....ok enough is enough. That being said I'm not hating the experience.
Послушать интересно, но без особых откровений.
Good, solid live album - remarkable quality considering the age. Performances are excellent. I’m not a big Allman Brothers Band fan, though - so a single listen is more than enough.
Didn’t realize they were so bluesy, and a jam band.
Pretty good
Not bad, standard jam band stuff. Very much like other bands of the era, Creedence, The Eagles. I like it, but it's kinda background music.
A bit jazzy, a bit rocky. Too much jamming though, even though the jam seems to be the slam.
Decent blues rock with some fun moments but too much meandering jamming
Dok ne pjevaju ovo mi je odlična pozadinska muzika. Dok pjevaju ovo mi zvuči preamerički. U svakom slučaju, izuzetne vještine i ne dosadi previše uprkos tome što traje cijelu vječnost.
Surprisingly better than the jean-shorted, Bud-drinkin', NASCAR-core vibe I unfairly expected. The band jams and earns their legendary status, but let’s be real: nobody needs a 19-minute track, even if it’s blasting from a Dodge panel van with an eagle airbrushed on the side. Four stars for the groove, minus one for the jam-stretching excess.
Struggle with live albums on here. This is more worth seeing live (if it were possible now) than an album you need to listen to. I mean Gov't Mule is still around... Although I guess none of them were with the band at the time of this show. Idk, this is a big decent jam of whateverness.
too much for me but really fun
some really good blues. insane musicianship. incredible flow that combines into a giant mashup of great ideas.
Pretty fun blues rock live album. You can tell a lot of the people in the band are having a great time. In general this is quite successful except for the guitar player that takes up too much space regularly.
Tight band and great musicianship, but pretty run of the mill stuff. Nothing very interesting, but still fine rock.
good music, but doesn't stir anything in me :/
All blended together
# Album Name: At Filmore East # Artist: The Allman Brothers Band # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Theres some great music on this album - the quality of the band is there for sure. Some of the songs dont stand out for the song they stand out due to the quality of the band. The album is more of a quality band that are jammin. Would be great to have a few whiskeys in a dark bar watching these guys. Biggest downside is the length of it. Its way too long. I give rap albums bad "wrap" (get it) for being so damn long. This is in the same boat. Its a bit of a hard one to rate. If this was a shorter album id say a 4. but the length is a killer. # Top Tunes: Stateboro blues / you dont love me # Would I listen to it again? Unsure. Id probably go into their back catalogue instead.
Todo por el blues
I get why old men like this and it's good blues-y rock, but not necessarily my personal taste
These boys sure do love twiddlin' and diddlin' and noodlin' and doodlin'
Like ok it’s jams. Ok. 3 stars
Pretty good! Longer instrumental tracks are the stand out.
Ça devait être ben cool live, mais avec 54 ans de décalage, le solo de guitare de 20 minutes perd de son intérêt.
I'm not usually a fan of live albums, but this was good - lots of guitar licks, almost entirely instrumental - very enjoyable background music.
Musically good, but only works in short bursts for me. Whole album goes on a bit after a while.
Standard rock. Nothing stood out, but it was still listenable. Too long winded wanky guitar though 3 stars
Bluesy
Solid bluesy rock, I’m not a huge fan of the long drawn out jams, but I did enjoy this. It was background music while I cleaned up the kitchen. There is also a part of me that feels like it brushes the edge of “white boys can’t play the blues”, so I’m going to stop at 3 stars and keep myself from rounding up.
Pretty good, I am not a huge Allman Brothers fan but I was definitely able to listen to this with some enjoyment
I can see the genius and talent at display here. I would probably really enjoy it live. But as a recording, it doesn’t work for me. The sheer length of many of these songs turns this into a bit of a challenge to get through - not because it’s bad -it most certainly isn’t- but because ultimately, I crave some more structure. It’s probably because jam-bands are not for me. Funnily enough, i absolutely love the first two tracks. And they are the shortest and tightest tracks on here. Maybe I will connect more to the Allman Brothers’ studio albums, because they definitely are a talented bunch.
This was a solid rock album. Ngl it kind of put me to sleep towards the end just because it was a bit repetitive but maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood for the album. Overall, I enjoyed this album listen and I would encourage others to check it out as well!
Meh.
3/5
I have big feeling about live albums, and they aren't good. It's like someone telling you about a really good show you didn't see. At best, you don't care. At worst, you feel like you missed out on something special. The live experience can't be captured which is why it is so special. This album tries- and this is the band to try it with. This is a live band, each night a little different, each jam having its own life. Sorry I missed the show.
I hate to admit it, but bring all my biases to listening to blues rock. I think everyone has a genre which sounds like “old people” music to them, and this is mine. The reason I say this is because I could feel this remarkable album expanding my music taste. It got me. The musicianship is out of this world and it gets better the further it goes on, with the best track in my mind being the epic In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. When they get stuck into a particular groove and just rock it out it is quite a ride. So much so that even the most cynical and difficult to please among us (me) are left pretty impressed.
The first half of blues tracks is not my thing but the jam tracks at the end are exquisite
somehow fun but also the musical equivalent of edging.
2.9 chill, nice, again something I wouldn’t stick on a lot tho
Ahh, tricky cos not my scene and all too sprawling for me (although the first vinyl I ever bought was Frampton Comes Alive so guess I have some explaining to do) but I do appreciate the musicianship and feel of this live monster...
Good, but ultimately not for me.
Masterful, and a great soundtrack to my day, but each track blends into the next indistinguishably. Forgettable. Looking forward to attempts to identify a favourite song from this one...
Pretty good live album.
Album #100!! Although I had hoped for something more fun. I can appreciate psychedelic rock / blues jams for a while, but more than an hour is just too much. It didn’t sound bad at all, just a bit tiring.
How does a rock band have an entire concert with virtually no singing
More blues than rock. Fine
Long.
Solid
Not especially my genre - also a long compilation
Entertaining album, but very generic of the time and blues sound, maybe outstays its welcome with the final track as well.
Bit too wanky for me. I can appreciate it on a lot of levels, but a bit too garage jam band.
Y'a beaucoup de guitares.
Pas trop ma tasse de café mais les fans sont bien servis. Tight et bien enregistré. Un gros 3.49
Good album, but If I have to hear one more blues riff then I'm going to kill someone
3.5
I want to like it, but I notice after awhile I’m getting irritated
Decent music but I didn’t love it
3 out of 5. Great musicianship and a good album, but some jams went on a little too long for my liking.
Good cut of a live album.
When an 8:48 song is the fourth longest on the album, you know the boys were jammin' Some great blues here and 23 minutes of whipping post to finish it off.
These guys seem like great musicians. They should try writing some songs.
Long and protracted. I've struggled with tour music (which I feel like this is). Groove for the sake of groove maybe doesn't animate me as much as it does many. That said, the last two tracks, are pretty amazing.
This was okay. Too many long solos for my liking
Live album that felt like an hour long guitar solo! Good music, just not a great album. I'd rather listen to the studio recordings.
Bluesy! The Jam sessions were pretty neat, but I need a shorter song for my 1001 playlist, so I'll go "Done Somebody Wrong" For a live album, this one sounds amazing. ~ 3.2 Stars
Not for me. But I do appreciate it.
A standard live album.
91/1089 - This sure is blues rock.
Just a bunch of guys, playing guitar, having fun doing so. Some slick moves sometimes, but it also does get tiring.
Solid jam, blues rock, not really my style, not really my song lenghts
Not usually a jam band fan but you what? This wasn't bad! Easy to just put on in the background while doing work. Still though, is it really one of the best 1000 albums of all time? 6/10
Kinda long at times which i wasn't really into but not as bad as i was expecting.
Good
Solid blues guitar, seems like a classic album. I like the live aspect of the album.
Virtuoso-level wankery is still wankery.
I expected to enjoy this more. I've seen them live before and had a good time. This seems.... I don't know, it's just not hitting me like I expected it to. I enjoy them and generally love jambands, but this falls flat. I listened to it on the way to work and again at work. It felt like background noise, not something I was actively listening to and enjoying. I'll have to revisit it later and see if my opinion of it changes.
chill vibes for sure, not really my thing probably my first jam record ive ever sat and listened to all the way thru. i can see how this is heralded as highly as it is but its fine
Good southern rock band from the 70’s. Greg Allman was the band. RIP.
Not bad, but nothing special.
gítarfikt. vel spilað og mikið grúv en ég hef lítinn áhuga.
This one feels like you almost had to be there. Like this would be vibes in person but the magic doesn't translate to the recording. Songs seemed to drag on a bit. Some really interesting instrumental bits though. And honestly all of You Don't Love Me was solid. Would like to do a closer listen to analyze more specific parts.
Bra jammy, bluesy, southern rock, blir bättre mot slutet stark 3
I like The Allman Brothers Band and I enjoy this album, but it's not that great. The first and last tracks are pretty darn good. "Done Somebody Wrong" and "Stormy Monday" are fine and inoffensive, but not mind blowing. "You Don't Love Me" ends up ultimately feeling pretty messy, even with the stellar instrumentation. The next track on the album, after a song that ends with ten-ish minutes of instrumental work, is a fucking instrumental. This did not need to be included. The album was long enough. Plenty long enough. Holy shit, you wouldn't believe what kind of song that comes after that instrumental. It ends up being around a half an hour of instrumental playing. Fuck that. Finally, after nearly an hour, we reach the last track. Oh, good. Something familiar. We love "Whipping Post". Not a terrible performance, but not worth an hour of waiting either. 3/5
As far as blues-rock from the early 70s goes, this album is among the best. But by the time I finished listening to the songs lasting over 20 minutes, I was a little tired of blues rock.
The Allman Brothers Band. Drie sterren.
This is regarded as one of the best live albums ever. There are several Allman Brothers songs that I like, but none are on this album. I’m glad I had an opportunity to hear it, these guys like to jam.
Quite the jam album. Didn't really hold my interest.
Objectively good but not my style. Probably wouldn’t put this on again.
Just could never get into it
I think this album is at its best when the band stretches out and moves away from straight blues. Elizabeth Reed is the highlight. The band’s chemistry is remarkable, for sure, and it’s a shame that the dual lead guitar pairing would be cut short.
Would have been an easy 4 if not a live album. Even then, one of the better live albums
They're great guitar players, nice groove for background music.
I lived in Macon for awhile, and these guys are worshipped there. This is too jam-band for my liking. I like a few of their songs, Whipping Post being my favorite. That's a badass song. I don't like the extended jam live version though. I'm about 30 minutes from Statesboro, so I can relate to Statesboro Blues. Other than that, I recognize their talent, but I don't worship these guys. This gets a 3.
I was about 17 years old when I first listened to this album. Oddly enough I was heading to Statesboro GA with a friend to visit his older brother who went to University down there. His brother actually worked at a college radio station and he let us pick out most of the music that was played throughout his nightshift. It was a cool experience for a 17 year old. So every time I think of this album it makes me recall the trip. It was also the first time I had ever eaten at a Waffle House. Allman Brothers do what they do well and this album is a testament to that. Good musicians that just happen to be southern.
Technically impressive, but tedious
Similar to my prior laments of the repetitiveness of the 12-bar blue and its requirement to be absolutely the best in its class to really stick with me (hello, Elmore James), I will say much of the same of this album. Deary me, this DRAGGED ON. A 19 MINUTE track? Really? Good mixing, however. I just don't need this in my life except when I'm making my way through a bottle of dark spirits, which I never do (yucky). Oh, and then there's a 13-minute track which is... better? Don't worry though, you get a nice 23 minute off-road journey to close off the record. I just don't think many people want to listen to a guitar... doing things for this long.
I'm not against the concept of the jam, but I think this album is just too long. A lot of live albums are mixed pretty poorly thanks to them being live but this one is mixed pretty well. It just kinda makes me wish I was listening to the doors though. Alright background music for doing something else.
Not terrible, but boring and a little long.
I sort of feel about this like the announcer does. "ok... the Allman Bros Band"
Lots of life in it. The guitar reminds me of Led Zeppelin. These songs are loooooong. This guitarist is awsome though. The musics quite chill, felt like I was on holiday in some of the songs (was also sunny for once so that may have contributed).
Fine. Skilled noodlings.
Eh. They can really make those guitars sing, but the tune is mediocre. That sounded more profound in my head.
I won’t argue against this being some pretty basic blues rock, but sometimes I get an appetite for some good electric guitar solos, and this has some good electric guitar solos. However, there were a LOT of them, and for every instance of really good playing, there seemed to be a 1:1 of lackluster noodling. This can become tiresome when they jam for 20 minutes. I’m not mad at all that I listened. This must have been a very fun series of concerts to go to. All in all, I think it evens out to a solid 3.
Good fun
just a really enjoyable live album with some awesome soloing and a good background listen.
OK, so it’s an iconic live album recorded at the most popular NYC venue of the time by a Southern rock band on the rise. At Filmore East is good, much better if you’re actually there live (and stoned.) Great start, strong finish. We had this one on vinyl at 4Ex but it didn’t get much play because all the songs after Statesboro and before Elizabeth Reed just run too long, and there’s no easy way to skip songs or flip sides. Even Whipping Post runs too long. Oh make no mistake, there’s some jammin’ going on and some incredible guitar work - but the album doesn’t hold up well. It’s LIVE, so The Allman Bros back doored onto the 1001 List. Comes in at (2.85*s) Did someone say DRUM SOLO?
There was a point in my life where I might have dug this more. Certainly it's a top-tier classic of '70s blues-rock. I'm not sure what "southern rock" is supposed to be, but if I didn't know any better I'd say this was a high-quality blues cover band (the entire first LP is blues covers)... although most blues bands might not try as hard as these guys do on tracks like "You Don't Love Me". On the 2nd LP it's their own compositions, with "Hot 'Lanta" being essentially a jazz tune done by rockers. There's a head, solos, repeat the head at the end. I don't think I ever heard that one before and it's probably my favorite track listening today. Dickey Betts' track "..Elizabeth Reed" sounds like Santana without congas. Santana really grinds my nads, so NO THANKS. On the last track, which takes up all of side D, the 23 minute "Whipping Post" goes bonkers on the 5 minute studio version with guitar wanking galore. Having listened to plenty of Grateful Dead jams from this same era, in comparison this tracks just feels static and tame after all this time, despite the Allmans' mastery of their form. The more concise "Brothers and Sisters" might be a better introduction to the Allman Brothers. In 2025, twenty-minute songs that are mostly bluesy guitar, harmonica and keyboard solos don't resonate like they did in the early 70s. Let us all mourn the waning attention span of today's youth. Still, as '70s guitar-wanking goes, this is one of the wankiest!
On a technical level this is very good but I'm just not that into the jam band stuff. Feels like a "you had to be there" sort of thing. Favorite track: Done Somebody Wrong
Jesus Christ, this and Grateful Dead in one week? At least I made it all the way through this one. 2.5
Great musicians but just too much instrumental for me on this album. 3 stars or C+ for me.
Wow, this album really redeemed by the last two songs, especially "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." That one going on the background playlist fosho. The rest of the album was just sorta there. I get the idea of a jam band concert album, but just sorta there for me.
Sounds great but it was a bit hard to get into it because of the extremely long songs. Also like always I don't believe live albums belong here.
it was fine. not a lot of lyrics innit
Jam Music
It does go on a bit but that's part of the charm. I'll happily listen again but maybe won't look for it. A harsh 3
Not a live music fan but found this enjoyable
Sometimes when it comes to these bands with obvious blues rock sound or something I always start expecting this will be something I will dislike or that it's gonna be too long for its own good which usually I feel right in feeling that way but here I think it was an unwarranted fear because this album was a lot cooler than I gave it credit for, especially from Stormy Monday onwards. There's something to the addition of these jazzy and jammy elements like the use of organ or long improv solos that gives it the kind of psychedelic feel I would look for in something from this era compared to if it was purely blues rock stuff without much else, this is especially obvious on "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Past" which when I read people say they are perfect, I can actually see it. I like surprises like these
Lekker hoor, maar doe mij maar een studioalbum van die gasten
Love The Allman Brothers but this record wasn’t anything moving to me. There were some beautiful moments here and there but nothing that got me hooked. The studio version of these songs are sooooo much better… Favorites: Stormy Monday, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, Whipping Post
Masturbatory music at its finest. As good as it is, wankery is still wankery.
The Allman Brothers are my dad's favorite band, so I heard a lot of them growing up. He's said multiple times At Fillmore East is regarded as one of the "greatest live albums of all time." Don't tell my dad, but I never really liked them growing up. Still, I figured I'd give the album a fair shot here. And after giving it a shot... I still don't like it. I don't really like blues, or southern blues rock. It doesn't do anything to my brain. That said, I love The Mars Volta, and I feel like Duane Allman's solo-ing might do to my dad's brain what Omar Rodriguez' solo-ing does to my brain. It's the same idea, just different execution for different generations. Maybe one of the reasons I don't like it is because, to me, it's predictable. That could be because I listened to it growing up all the freaking time, so I've internalized these patterns. It's just so familiar and basic to me. This could be why kids will never like the music they hear from their parents growing up as much as their parents do. It will never be "new" to them. They will never have "discovered" this music, because it was spoon fed to them just like their baby food was. It's too familiar to them in a way that becomes boring. We all want new-ness, to an extent, when we're teenagers and we're discovering music for the first time. So, I don't think The Allman Brothers are bad by any means. But personally they don't do anything for me. I'll give this a 3 out of respect for my dad, and because Whipping Post is an actual jam. But the rest of it is not my bag. Oh, and also there's a frequency on Duane's guitar that just GRATES in my ears. Like some kind of high mids piercing, shrill frequency I would cut so hard if I were mixing this thing now.
I'm sure if I was actually at this concert it would be great. But, to listen at my desk? It was just okay...
This is an excellently recorded and made live album, it almost sounds like it was made in a studio. And technically they are very good musicians. If I rated only on these aspects, it would be a 5 easily. But as I was listening to it, I questioned myself - what's really the point of this virtuosity? Is there any? I also felt like that the album is about 30 minutes longer than it should be. Near 80 minute albums are just too long. So all things considered it is a 3 from me.
This was a great rock (or bluesrock in song songs) album. I haven't heard the band before but I really like the guitar playing. After this I'm gonna go listen to a non live album to see what they sound like with some more mixing in a studio environment. I have a feeling there will be songs I might add to many playlists.
Long but pleasant. But long. Good background vibes.
Favorite tracks: In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, Mountain Jam I was bracing myself for this because 1) blues rock is not my cup of tea, and 2) the length. But once it got going, I actually quite liked the instrumental/jamming parts. Clearly very skilled people, clearly having a great time. Not something I'd add to regular rotation, but I'd put it in the background if I had guests. 3 stars.
3 stars. not bad just not my genre.
No hate to the Allman Brother's, but isn't this album just a bunch of white guys playing blues music? The music is good, I'd throw this album on the turntable on a Sunday morning while doing the dishes, but it's not nearly as memorable as anything by Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, or other blues and roots great. I guess you get some psychedelic rock weaseling it's way in to make it more unique, but not enough to make it feel like they're not just cosplaying as black musicians and making their songs 4x longer for no reason.
Love the Allman Brothers and haven’t heard this and I’m looking forward to it! Within the opening bars, it’s already great. I-IV-V guitar, some organ, and drums. It’s funny looking at the other reviews written here a lot of them refer to this as jam band music, but I find it way more southern rock/blues than a jam band so far. After the first two tracks, they bring it back down a little bit for “Stormy Monday” it’s more ballad like but with some shredding guitar. A lot of jamming and having fun improvising is does not jam band make, but can see the comparisons especially on “Elizabeth Reed.” Love the singing on the “Whipping Post” and it’s 20 minutes long…which is probably too long, but I can forgive it because it is the Allman Brothers in 1971.
Good live performance, not particularly memorable 3.25
Love the second half of this album
Wouldn't listen again
Don’t like live recordings generally, and not my favorite genre, but a good vibe.
first time hear d 3/5
Some parts are awesome but some of the Jam sessions just go on and on.
pre-listening: i am not looking forward to this one. it doesn't seem interesting for one, it's also a live album - which i don't really have a general fondness for. but maybe it won't be too bad. ohhh honestly i ended up really liking this!! the last 20 minute epic and in memory of elizabeth reed were stunning! i think im converted. i was expecting bad audio quality but it was really good! the vocals were amazing, but the instrumentation even more so. it did feel very american, i think, which is cool (i'm not). it's very nice as background music, when cooking or painting. i made a painting of a butchered fish when listening to this and it turned out great and it made me very happy. lots of joy. good stuff hell yeah yeehaw
Impressive production for what is essentially a live album. Not really my cup of tea - it's dragging on for a bit too long, and probably is a better thing to witness live than to listen back to. Some good moments though, like "You Don't Love Me" that made this album worth checking.
- I can see why this album of extended jams made them famous. The guitar skills are much more noteworthy in a live setting. - Some elements of the songs stand out, and none are bad, but they do get a bit repetitive. - I know it was typical for the time, but too much keyboard just deflates my enthusiasm. Instantly makes it feel dated.
Banger!
Good musicians, but damn those jams are long. I don't think I'll ever put this album on by choice.
If you like jamming, noodling and straight-up meandering guitar solos, this live album from the Allman Brothers is for you. I love the sound of the guitar, it can make so many unique and interesting noises when played well and can be a legit art form. Too much guitar, with little or no structure can still cool, but, "At Fillmore East" was a challenging listen, so many jams and so much wanking. Considering there was 7 songs through 4 sides of wax, I feel the need to hear some 2-3 minutes pop songs and get off the couch. If you're in the mood for...jamming, this is fine, if not, you're out of luck.
Decent enough, but similar to lots of other blues bands. Nothing jumped out to me as exceptional or original. 3/5
Бесконечная джем музыка, что мы очень любим и ценим, в жанре, который я переношу с трудом - хмм... Лучшая песня - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.
You know, I can really see how this would be some kind of holy bible for fans of jammy blues rock. But man, that person most certainly is not me. Everything just ended up blending together into an 80-minute, homogenous mush. Definitely not unpleasant, but not something I ever see myself returning to.
meh
This album was a little bit of a roller coaster for me. I went in thinking I probably wouldn't like it - white boy blues and all that - but enjoyed the first couple of tracks and was ready to revise my thinking. But then, I don't know, it's too much of a live album and the songs go on and on with endless guitar riffs and I just got tired of it.
A live double album with just seven songs on it might seem to be a bit self indulgent, and to be fair it probably is. However, this is amiable southern rock with a bluesy lolloping rhythm that passes the time in an acceptable way. The real surprise is that the Allman brothers weren’t hoary old rockers when they recorded this, but they were only in their mid twenties.
Not to bad live album, quite bluesy, they take the time to let the songs live and grow.
Kanske inte min kopp te, men kompetent. Svag trea
A decent album that wanders too much. Seriously, two 20 minute songs with massive solo sections.
I am not a fan of two things: live albums and unnecessarily long songs. Oh look, a 7 song album spanning almost 80 mins! It is to note that this is their first album and it still holds a special place in music history. I actually think the rambling solos come through better live with the hiss of the old technology but it's all just too long for my liking. The little god bless america riff at the end of You Don't Love Me made me chuckle.
Przyjemny blues rock. Zdecydowanie bardziej nastawiony na instrumentalne popisy, niż same piosenki.
These guys were just straight jamming.
Who doesn’t enjoy a bit of improvisional blues? Quite a lot of people by the looks of it! Anyway I did so there!
Very jammy with a real Grateful Dead vibe. It's certainly not my favorite style of music these days, but it gave me a nice warm feeling today. So split between two and three stars, I'm going towards the generous end.
The Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East While I didn't enjoyed as much as others, it's still a good live album. There are for sure big highlights throughout the album, but some of them do feel repetitive and quite dull at times. But honestly, this is good! 1.- Statesboro Blues = 7/10 2.- Done Somebody Wrong = 5/10 3.- Stormy Monday = 8/10 4.- You Don't Love Me = 6/10 5.- Hot 'Lanta = 9/10 6.- In Memory of Elizabeth Reed = 7/10 7.- Whipping Post = 10/10 FINAL SCORE: 7.4/10
ok, nice blues, blu grass guitars
Brevity is... wit. The interplay between Hammond organ and lead guitar is the sound of late 60s-early 70s blues rock that I love, but once we get past the opening 2 tracks and end up going several through 8min+ jams, I want some space to breathe.
Not bad
Pretty solid listen, traditional 70s rock album nothing to crazy, liked that it was live
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Stormy Monday, Whipping Post Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Really hard to capture the magic of live music on record. Glad it's here so I could experience it 50 years after the fact, but ultimately succumbs to You Just Had To Be There-itis.
I mean if you love '70s jam Rock, it rocks. My only issue is the 20 minute songs tho
It was pretty good. The songs are mostly kinda long but they were pretty good. The background noise was great too. Pretty good for a live album!
Cool!
It’s the second time I’ve listened to this album. Generally I enjoy this kind of progressive, southern jam rock, and I know this is considered one of the quintessential live albums, but I don’t feel it in the way I’d like to feel it. I mean, I want it to strike me on a visceral level - I really do - but my soul doesn’t buy it. It is enjoyable to listen to. It contains some absolute masterful musicianship; the electric guitar shines down from otherworldly planes on more than a few occasions. These arrangements should send shivers down my spine, but alas, they don’t. I wonder if it has to do with familiarity? I appreciate the Allman Brothers Band’s radio hit singles but they don’t appear on this album; perhaps the lack of the known contributes to my underwhelmed sensation? Something did stir me between 12:03 to 12:47 of You Don’t Love Me. The hillbilly guitar part spoke briefly to my soul, although only for a short moment. I vote overall based on how the album makes me feel, and it disappoints me to offer At Filmore East a mere 3, because from a technical and sonic perspective it rates much higher. This was the most difficult album for me to rate among the project so far.
Can honestly say I haven't ever listened to much of Allman Brothers, but this wasnt bad. Might have to give them a listen beyond their song that used to be the Top Gear theme.
This album did nothing at all for me. It just happened and then it finished. Utterly forgettable.
The great southern-blues rock jam band. While technically impressive, I often found myself thinking that I would prefer to listen to Grateful Dead. At Fillmore East can occasionally meander and lose steam, while Live / Dead flows a lot more naturally in its dynamics.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ok lyssning. Några omöjligt långa låtar. Men sköna jam.
December 1, 2024 how 'bout we cool it with the long live albums this week (this comes hot on the tail of ELP and MC5)
Always the greatest! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: own it Favourite Song:
Some good stuff here, but tediously overlong.
I listened to this one a few days ago and found it tedious, but on second listen I really enjoyed it as background music to drive me forward while working. The guitar skills on display are amazing, but I still think it is pretty tedious at times. Glad I listened again, we'll see if I revisit. 3/3.5
I really like the Allman Brothers studio albums, so this was quite disappointing for me, some classics on this recording but good lord, some of the instrumental/solo sections drag on for some time without doing anything especially interesting.
This album was ok
Low 3
Sick 50 min guitar solo
Please, I beg for mono. "You don't love me" has the drums very hard on the right side and it destroys my enjoyment of the song. Guitar riffs are good, the rare vocals glide through the instrumentals, but holy shit I'm getting allergic to 60's-80's bands discovering what stereo sound was and ruining their record because of it. If it was good enough for the Beatles, it should've been good enough for you too. this shit funky though 6/10
Rambly rock
Let me first say that I LOVE The Allman Bros. Heck, I even own this one on vinyl. But, I'm just not a fan of live albums counting as "albums." If you like jam bands then this is mandatory listening, so I get why it's recommended, but to me, even though I enjoy the noodle-fest, I don't think this is a great choice for a must-hear live album, let alone a list of ALL albums you must hear.
I enjoyed the live recording. Very well done.
Not my kind of music tbh! But it was upbeat and fill off tasty licks and solos.
I ended up liking this one quite a bit more than I expected to. It really caught my attention in some of the jams. Unfortunately, it also got a bit long and self-indulgent on some of the tracks (22 min wtf?) Standouts Done Somebody Wrong 3/5
Once youve heard one you've heard them all
This was a decent listen, in that southern blues rock kind of way. Kind of in the same vein as that Skynyrd, Outlaws, Marshall Tucker style. They take the long jam to new lengths, the last track announced on the album as “a little number” and checking in at 23 minutes. I like a long track more than most but damn.
I’ve always felt that when it comes to listening to the blues, you gotta get in and get out pretty quickly. Unfortunately this album is probably not a good litmus test for that. Live recordings are very hard to pull off and these guys do it well here. The band is tight and some parts where both guitarists are harmonizing are pretty solid. Those reasons probably earn it as 3-star for me. But damn…do we really need 20+ minute jams? Clearly a listen where if you leave to get a beer, only to return and realize you probably didn’t miss much.
Right between a 3 and 4 for me. Strong vibes and I love a good blues set. But there are plenty of other places to look if you want good blues. Heavy reliance on standards limits the score as well.
Nice.
This is fine. The 20 min jams weren’t as bad as I initially feared. 2.75/5
I don't usually like live albums, but this was some nice jamming. I was positively surprised by the quality of the recording, I could hardly tell this wasn't a studio album. I wish it had more structure, though. 3.5/5 stars
I mean, it's a good example of jam blues. It sounds good, they play a lot classic blues standards...but it's still a live album. I'll never be a fan of live albums with very few exceptions.
An acceptable level of Noodly Lou and the Turd Herders
They're probably proud of this record. No reason not to be. They're good at what they do. It's good background music. And that's what it automatically becomes, because they can't keep my attention. Favorite song: you don't love me
Erinomaisen kuuloista liveksi. Hienosti osaavat soittaa. Liian pitkiä biisejä vaan, niillä ei ole muuta suuntaa kuin kasvaa, mikä käy aikas yksitoikkoiseksi.
The Good: great classic rock! The Bad: too many jam songs. The Ugly: no weed no joy... Of I were interested in listening to a jam band, I'd go and see them live... 3* just because, but I don't believe I will be listening to this album again soon, and I love rock, and blues...
Sympa
Not really what I thought this band sounded like. It was definitely better than what I had imagined, but nothing that I'd go back to.
Buen disco en vivo, excelente habilidad de todos los músicos, algunes canciones son algo largas para mi gusto, no lo volvería a escuchar
Jam band
I would enjoy this if I was actually there live cuz it was indeed a jam. Just fine though as an album. Pretty awesome guitars though, just a bit long
Notable track: Stormy Monday
Classic jam band funk, live.
It’s fine.
this is fine for what it is but for me personally i can't imagine a scenario where I'd put this on over a grateful dead set. simply a matter of taste, i think everyone only has room for one jam band in their life!
Great live performance. You don't love me stole the show
Look, I'm not a rock-blues fan, nor am I hug fan of jam bands. There's some nice elements (and there's no denying the musical ability of these bros) but I can't listen to blues harmonica for 23 minutes. I mean, c'mon.
Pretty cool southern rock and blues album. Allman Brothers would have been a trip seeing in their prime. Especially if you are a fan of guitar work. It's unfortunate that the good rock and roll is in the underground and all the popular stuff is either too jock rock or artists who parody other bands (Greta van fleet, sheepdog). One day it'll see the mainstream... Maybe.
Love the blues. Great guitar. Reminded me of Cream, didn’t really find anything too dissimilar from other blues bands I’ve heard. Favourite song was their rendition of Stormy Monday.
I'm glad I forced myself to listen to this album in its entirety because it was off or a bad start. Your typical 12-bar blues I've heard too many times. But it gest better after the first two songs and is a nice rocky album, I think. With even some walking bass lines outside of a jazz setting but it works. I'll give it another listen. Not the most amazing or groundbreaking album, also I don't like the fact that they have cobbled together this album, it is not a true live album of one gig. But some songs are great.
Sounds like they’re just jamming in their garage
Felt like a jam sesh in my ears for an hour straight which isn’t a bad thing.
This was an exciting, soulful and fun experience! This is what I imagine when I think of a blues rock band going on stage and just having fun with the music they make.
7 songs over 78 minutes long. Do the math. Ive tried and tried to get into these guys and I just cant. I see the talent but I just cant. At least its not EDM. Give it a 3 for staying power
kewl
Endless noodling is not my thing so a band know for their jam-sessions is going to be a hard sell. Even though the tracks bordered in length to episodes in TV-shows, any one part of the track I enjoyed. Then again, I would've enjoyed it more if the songs had some structure and edited down. Saying things like that I think kind of misses the point of a live album of a jam band. Going to settle on a weak 3 since the album was very groovy. Feeling quite neutral about the whole deal, good as some background music I guess when you want some funk.
Very chilled rock with a nice jazzy feel. Made me feel cheery lol. Some of the songs on the album are veryyyyy long tho.
I do enjoy some long jams, but this album seems a bit excessive. And I prefer the polish of the studio sound. Overall it's fine
Hey so these guys are really great musicians, and this is the kind of thing I might have on in the background of a BBQ and groove along to while socializing. But this will be the only time I sit down and actively listen to the whole thing. I've never given jam bands a try, maybe they're not for me. It's yet to be seen.
Hmm, sorry, what was that? I nodded off for a bit there... this record is interminable. I find it interesting the number of reviews that talk about how they "fused jazz with rock/blues", but isn't that just code for "endless soloing"? And the soloing is endless; guitar solos, organ solos, drum solos, bass solos, god help me. Would anyone who knew anything about jazz call this a jazz record? In fairness, they are super tight, well recorded, and all crack players who can all squeeze out a good solo when required. The twin guitar thing is pretty impressive. But it did give permission for a thousand other bands to do likewise, which you can't really blame the Allman Bros for, but I will. Worse yet, this is like the Bible for Blues Lawyers. I have met quite a few 50 year old financial planner/dentist/IT professionals with $3000 Fenders who want to jam on Stormy Monday. Truth be told, you can listen to Whipping Post and know everything about this record that you really need to.
Some good jams. If you’re not familiar enough with the music, live is always harder
Live jam album. Loved it.
This is right up my street, good ol proper blues and superb guitar noodling! A bit repetitive, but let's face it, that's basically what blues is
4 stars for the sound 2 stars for the length No song should be >30 minutes
okay for being this kind of music
Can I be impressed and bored? Yes, yes I can.
More jam band live album-madness. This one was palatable due to the easy-listening of their blues/country rock style, which I'd say lends itself somewhat well to the live environment. Not much more than a 3 though, as I don't consider too many live albums "ground breaking".
Pretty long, but I like rock so it's acceptable I kind like rhis
Their version of “Statesboro Blues” is embarrassingly bombastic and silly compared to the beauty of the original track by Blind Willie McTell. I can see why people enjoy The Allman Brothers’ bluesy prog jams; I however, don’t.
Thought I liked the end half of the album turned out Spotify moved me onto related albums which were just way more experimental and interesting. not quite sure where the album ended but fuck it there’s only so much 12 bar blues you can hear even if it’s pretty decent 12 bar blues
The second half of this album is incredible. In memory of Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post are really cool songs with amazing jams. The first half I found boring as hell. It was just boring blues songs with extended guitar solos. I like jams that showcase the whole band, not just filler songs for someone to noodle over. Elizabeth Reed was the highlight for me, that jam was just awesome, you could really feel the bands energy. Same with whipping post but I loved the sound of Elizabeth Reed better, it definitely veered away from the blues focus into something more interesting.
I like the Allman Brothers studio albums that I have heard but I'm not as much into their live work. Don't get me wrong the band are tight and the songs are good for the most part but the meandering jamming makes me lose interest after a while. Again nothing bad but unless you're into jam bands then it's not essential.
Classic American rock sound. The quality of engineering makes it sound like a studio record. Allman Brothers aren’t something I’d typically listen to, but it has its place. Some classics I grew up with too. If I were around for this show, I probably would have gone to check it out. Solid record.
If you like aimless jams that don't end, here's your record...
Insomma okay, musicalmente è senz'altro carino e non ho nessuna critica concreta se non che sto diventando insofferente ad album di questo genere. Non so proprio che voto dare
Was going to be a 4 but then it just went on and on and on and on and on......
Some really good rock in here but unfortunately an hour and a half is just way too long
You know I really don’t have much to say about the individual songs on this album as they kinda just blended together like it was one big jam sesh. I’m not usually a fan of live albums especially from this era just because the audio quality is usually dog ass terrible but this one was pretty damn good. Whipping post sorta stuck in my head a bit more but that might just be cause it was the last track. It’s just good blues, good instrumentation, but like a lot of these older albums they’re fundamentally different listened to with a brain full of micro plastics off an iPhone, compared to if they had been listened to on a hifi system with a fucked needle with a brain full of lead byproducts and LSD. Nothing I’d go out of my way to listen to but good music nonetheless.
One of those ones you'd put on if you want background music from a particular period, just goes on and on at spme points but its not bad 3/5
A lot of skill but i prefer vocals with my jams
01) Statesboro Blues - 6,0 02) Done Somebody Wrong - 6,0 03) Stormy Monday - 8,5 04) You Don't Love Me - 5,0 05) Hot Lanta - 6,0 06) In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - 6,5 07) Whipping Post - 5,0 TOTAL: 6,14 (61/100) Current ranking: 208/260 So, so you think you can jam... I really liked "Stormy Monday". Songs #4 & #7 are really, really to long, hence I really, really didn't like them.
So this is a band that jams and didn't like the fact that albums were limited to 3 minute songs. Therefore "we have to make a live album" Welcome to the new age friends.
Eh, this was fine - didn't get me too excited, but didn't piss me off either. Jam bands aren't particularly my thing - for every passage that made me go "oh, that was neat" there was another that made me go "hmmm, that's a bit self indulgent even for my tastes". Dunno, I guess I'd go 3.5 on it, but I'm rounding down as it's definitely not a 4. Fave track - "Hot 'Lanta" maybe? The slowed down "You Don't Love Me" had its charms, too...
Enjoyable, good music - I probably wouldn't hunt it out but didn't want to change to something else. The longer songs were particularly cool, ideally would give this a 3.5
Not my favorite, I liked the guitar but it didn’t feel like my thing
3.7
Good but too long
I think actually hearing this live would be amazing. While I really enjoyed it, I don't know if that translated as well to an album for me personally. I really do enjoy the style but several of the tracks drag on too long for me to get into not hearing live. That all said, this one is definitely worth a listen and I do think it belongs on the list. I just won't be revisiting too often I don't think.
Enjoyable, but not sure I'd listen to it again. These guys were at the top of their games for this set, though.
There are 3 songs I really like. The songs with guitar solos get too repetitive.
Probably would have been great to see live, as an album just okay
Enjoyed it
It's okay
Interesting that this album with all of its extended plays was a hit. My, how our attention spans have changed.
I'm sure it's technically impressive, but it goes on for so long and doesn't really do all that much with the time. The shorter tracks are pretty good, but there are multiple ~20 minute ones that just wander around. I don't mind it, but it fades into noise after a while.
’nice blues.
It was OK. Some good tracks.
Good.
-Great vocals and interesting for a live album. I really like the classic rock and blues influences, although some of the songs dragged on a bit too long for my liking -Favorites are Done Somebody Wrong
Too long a guitar solos on this album
Gentle, friendly pub music
The ALL-MAN BROTHERS? Pass!
Excellent vibes! Didn’t pay too close attention but would certainly revisit this and jam out
This is a great album. It wasn’t easy to listen through in one day. It’s a 2+ hour album with long solos and jams. It would have been awesome to see these guys live, which is probably the best way to experience a jam band.
Like everyone said, why the live album? Allman brothers are good but live albums are a weird choice.
I don’t understand the reason why live albums are on this listing. I can understand why the Allman Brothers Band would be on the list, as they are phenomenal. Three stars for the ABB, but not for a live album
I wish this wasn't a live album because I think I would enjoy it more.
Very bluesy. Good. 3*
1. track 1 - blues, good but generic. as blues usually is.
Fun throwback
Statesboro Blues 9/10 would use in a film Done Somebody Wrong 7/10 Stormy Monday 6/10 You Don’t Love Me 6/10 Hot Lanta 6.5/10 In memory of Elizabeth reed 7/10 whipping post 8.5/10
im scared I'll hear whipping post in my sleep Statesboro Blues 6/10 Done Sombody Wrong 8/10 Stormy Monday 8/10 You Don't Love Me 9/10 Hot 'Lanta 8/10 In Memory of Elizabeth Reed 7/10 Whipping Post 10/10
I like the music, but this album is too long for me.
I'm not the biggest fan of extended "jam band" live albums, but I have to admit I did like this one pretty well. My main issue with it is that it just... keeps... going, and I'm not sure what the destination is.
6/10
solid blues rock album, can get boring at points due to jammy nature
I have this on vinyl. Never listened to it but I know these guys. They are so solid, classic rock, southern rock as it gets.
