lowkey fux with it
This is actually a pretty good album. I’d never heard of the band before but they have some good tracks here, and a few a that feel a little more experimental than many of the other artists around at the time. I initially thought this would just be another of the apps background albums that is over before you realise it’s playing its so bland. But this got an enthusiastic second listen from me. Impressed.
Another really good album by a band I'd never heard of.
A lot of fun 60s rock on this album here. Each song is short, well played, and good. I'm Not Your Stepping Stone is probably my favorite track on this album. It's not mind-blowingly fantastic but it's a good time.
This record is full of hooks and grooves backed by a fantastic rhythm section. It is fun to listen to and entertaining. Guitarist Mark Lindsay really shines on this record. The band's influence would filter down through the next few generations of rockers coming out of the LA music scene.
Fun, if not a bit generic.
I liked hearing this album! I was familiar with Paul Revere and the Raiders, but had never heard more than a few of their hits. These guys are really talented, I believe we're overshadowed by the giants of the era, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones...
This band was from Portland when we lived there in the 60’s and JB saw them live and got their autographs, which he still has — I believe he may have been reporting on them for his school paper. They had some very good radio hits as a band and for Paul as a solo artist. They were also the house band for the first year or so of a weekday afternoon music show, “Where the Action Is”, which had a lot of great artists on it (The Who, The KInks, e.g.) and ran for 450 episodes. Even though this started with a great Top 5 single, “Kings” I didn’t have high hopes for it. But it was a pleasant surprise with catchy tunes, even the non-hits they wrote themselves. Nicely done, lads.
One of the first albums I was completely new to. I grew into it. I started out thinking how slowly (for pop) the USA responded to the British Invasion. There were some great bands of course, but not close to how many there should have been. As we know from the Nuggets/Pebbles series, the response was rampant in garages across the country, but I guess the music industry was pivoting like an aircraft carrier. Anyway, in that context, I was listening thinking, if this band had managed to break through at least to a level where they were on television regularly, then why did they not make a bigger splash. I’ve read what it says in the 1001 book and while it’s a bit of a stretch to call them the first pop-punk band, I do agree that they do get a lot right on this album. I will investigate further, but on initial impressions, I am comfortable rounding up to 4 rather than down to 3.
Gut
Really good high energy entertaining first track. It may not hit the heights of that again but it is an entertaining listen through the rest of the album and sounds more modern than it is.
Good for teeth, appetite, and digestion
Every day is a school day.
A little more polished at times than I expected from this garage band, and more interesting in their themes than many rock bands of that era, but it’s the cleverness of the song construction that leads to this rounding up.
Streaming platforms love giving me Stepping Stones. The rest of the album is pretty good too
Ça me parle. Et puis, il y a "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone".
"Midnight Ride" is the fifth studio album by Boise, Idaho rock band Paul Revere & the Raiders. Rock and roll is the Wiki-listed genre. Straight-forward. It's a unique record in their discography in that all five band members have songwriting credits. Those bandmembers included Mark Lindsay (lead vocals, percussion, saxophone), Paul Revere (organ, backing vocals), Drake Levin (guitar, backing vocals), Phil "Fang" Volk (bass, backing and lead vocals) and Mike "Smitty" Smith (drums, lead vocals). The album reached #9 on the US Billboard charts and had decent critical reviews. The album opens with the Cynthis West and Barry Mann-penned song "Kicks." The song was originally offered to the Animals but Eric Burdon didn't want it. Too bad, good song. A ringing guitar melody and fuzzed bass. A catchy vocal chorus. Lindsay singing secretly to a girl about her issues with and dangers of drugs. The persona in "Ballad of a Useless Man" tells his struggles with alcohol, homelessness and lost ambition. A driving guitar, rollicking organ, a fast pace. A very good deeper cut. A tom-tom drum starts (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone." A song written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart with a great guitar riff and background organ. A song that gets progressively faster. The second side opens with "All I Really Need is You." A sort of Middle Eastern beat and mysterious guitar riff. Beach Boys-esque background vocals. Lindsay gets his sax out. A dark guitar riff carries "Louie, Go Home." A bouncy organ and beat. The bass keeping the rhythm. Lindsay telling someone to leave their current situation. At its heart, the music is rock and roll but has elements of garage rock, country, pyschedelia, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and the blues. The songs are short and concise and reminds me of the Monkees, no doubt since the Monkees covered two of these songs. However, there is a much more harder edge here and I can see the influence on punk. Also, Lindsay's vocals have an edge and there are a number of memorable guitar riffs. Overall, this is a very good collection of songs and album especially for its time and well worth a listen.
Ive never been a huge fan of nirvana or kurt curban but this is an iconic album
Good album. Good example of the sound of the British Invasion of the 1960's, which of course was pioneered by the Beatles. Many of the songs are in the key, structure, and tempo of other early rock songs in the era. The most lasting and recognizable track is "I'm not your stepping stone".
Not super familiar with this one but quite enjoyed it
3.5/5 It's fun!
I feel like some of these 60s pop/rock ‘Beatle’ type albums can either be hit or miss and for me it was a hit. Most of the songs I suppose were fairly simple, but I enjoyed listening to them and was a nice surprise, dare I say this album is a little bit of a hidden gem. Standout songs ‘kicks’, and ‘ballard of a useless man’ and ‘I’m not your stepping stone’ I didn’t necessarily feel like there was a bad song from this album, it’s not groundbreaking but a good listen, I was confused why they randomly had one song sung in Italian, but it was still decent. Might not be for everyone but I rate this album and was a fun listen, its great if you want that 60s rock sound. I would probably listen to some of the songs again and maybe the album, but I feel like it performed well enough for me to just push it into the 4-star bracket.
Garage rock in its unnamed infancy. A certain product of its time with easy to hear influences. Fun and easy to enjoy
Boppy sixties pop-rock. Pleasant, a bit anachronistic lyrically - feels like the imagined female audience is being condescended to in a couple of the songs.
My mom was into this band and I can see why. I love this version of Stepping Stone. Much better than The Black Album.
? and the mysterians if they were good
Very vibes Was moving furniture while listening to it and didn’t even realize the album had finished. All songs blend real well. Nostalgia for a time I didn’t live.
The soundtrack to my (early) youth. Some of their hits were excellent.
Shoutout to some fun production in this album, binaural audio and bright harmonies made this one fly by. It'd be hard not to draw some comparisons between Paul Revere & The Raiders and The Beach Boys, but as far as I'm concerned the more the merrier. Toss in a couple cool, classic 60's automobile tunes and I'm a happy camper. Midnight Ride feels like a cotton candy, pop-rock album the whole way through, sweet and easy. Highlight: SS 396 Lowlight: Ballad of a Useless Man Surprise Hit: There's Always Tomorrow
Very 60s. Big fan.
This is a really interesting listen, good old fashioned American Garage pop. Not well known here in the UK, the album is most notable for I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone, although it's not their composition, it was a hit for the Monkees and later covered by the Sex Pistols.
This was a lot of fun. Sounds like early Brian Jones-era Stones if they could play in tune. There’s also a sort of sarcastic pre-punk rock energy I like. I’ll go 3.5 and round up because I’ve been feeling generous lately
Great Album really enjoyed it. Would i buy a copy? No...
Like an American proto McFly. Not everything is hits but most dare you to move.
An ok album, icl i enjoyed it a bit more than the rolling stones album, not bad first track, 7.3/10
Here is a band that got the memo: It’s 1966. If you’re going to make albums in the age of Dylan and the Beatles, no more child’s play. While not every album can be Rubber Soul or Revolver, you can still make a full album of quality tracks and show you at least TRIED. Among the best tracks are “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” which always sounded too good to be a Monkees original, the hit “Kicks,” and “Get it On.” Good stuff from the era just before the Doors, Hendrix, and Sgt Pepper.
# Album Name: Midnight Ride # Artist: Paul Revere # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Good 60s vibes. Feels of the beach boys in some tracks. Solid effort # Top Tunes: get it on / ss396 / always tomorrow # Would I listen to it again? yes
jagged, odd, and slightly sinister british invasion/mod fan fiction from an american band. the country twang that occasionally pops up is the most obvious thing u wont find in the who et al, generally speaking, but im most interested in the just weird dark uncurrents that at times feel proto-post punk. theres some memorable melodic tracks but All I Really Need Is You, a track which twists itself into such weird and counterintuitive shapes, is prob my fave. probably not a better collection of mod tunes than meaty beaty big and bouncy, but no less creative, which is something!
Pretty good music for being 4 times closer to the end of ww2 than to today.
Not heard of this lot, but actually really fun listen!
Another birth date record for me! Really enjoyed it, will listen again.
I liked this more than I thought I would
Wanting to be a part of the new sound of their day, this band doesn't have much that is uniquely theirs, and yet their style progressively looks forward. Even though they are an American band, most of this album feels like they came straight out of the British invasion. The explanation at the beginning (and at the end) of Melody for an Unknown Girl is lame and unnecessary. However, this does not interfere with the fact that this is an enjoyable listen with interesting sounds of the time.
I already knew Kicks and Not Your Stepping Stone, but had never actually listened to this album. Good stuff here, emblematic of the era. There are some others that do it a little better, but not many
A questionable band name decision could be a reason they were never more popular. This album clearly tried to make every song a mainstream hit. It was a lot of fun; I just wish it wouldn't have ended so soon. Favorite Track: "Get It On".
Some of these tracks felt delightfully edgy for the overall teeny-bopper sound, so I can see how this influenced later rock groups.
Top 3: 1. Melody for an Unknown Girl - Simplesmente uma música de amor pra uma mulher desconhecida! 2. I'm Not Your Stepping Stone - Soa quase atemporal, claramente bandas atualmente fariam uma música nessa vibe 3.
I liked this way more than I expected to. Even though this has a lot of 60's characteristic sound to it, it seems way ahead of what other rock and garage bands were doing at the time. Definitely a record I would come back to. 4/5
Really fun album. I pretty much enjoyed the whole thing. It was cool to hear the original Stepping Stone, which I knew from Minor Threats cover. 3.75/5
I’m surprised that I was not aware of this very good record
8/10
Good 60's rock. I could see myself throwing this on occasionally. It's more of a 3.5
East Coast Surf Rock, the good kind.
You just need help, girl.
Y'know, there's no reason why I should take it easy on Paul Revere & The Raiders. Although I've never let it affect my end rating too much, I've never exactly **not** groaned whenever a random 60's psych album or an obscure British album pops up. I see where the people who rate 'em so lowly come from. So my group gets an album from a random 60's bubblegum group — it'd only stand to reason I groan at 'em all the same, huh? I mean, what makes **them** so special, huh? Why should I treat 'em any differently than, I'unno, The Beau Brummels? Simple, sis: because I enjoyed them. I'm sure I'm not the only one who knows about Paul Revere & The Raiders thanks to 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'. The movie includes three songs from the group, and I tell yah, they're good tunes. Especially "Good Thing"! It's always sounded to me like a KISS song, and, dang, if that don't make the tune that much better to me. Heck, I even went and once listened to the album it came from, 'The Spirit Of '67'. Shame it's not on here, because, again, seriously "Good Thing" **is** a good thing. So is "Hungry", which I think is their bigger hit. And that enjoyment carries over well here. Sure, in the grand scheme of things, besides one song, this music isn't anything very special, or maybe even particularly notable. And that one song might only be notable because a bigger band covered it the following year: The Monkees. But, look, when music is fun, it's damn fun. I don't care how particularly unique it is in their field. Sure, Paul Revere & His Raiders may be one of a dozen or so garage bands that sprung up in the wake of The Beatles, but dang it, they're a **good** garage band. A damn fine piece of Juicy Fruit to chew on, y'know? I mean, honestly, what's wrong with liking bubblegum music? I'm all for "Sugar, Sugar", let me tell you. Not everything has to be "greatest of all time" material. So they ain't actually The Beatles — so what? They sing catchy songs and have a bit of that raw garage energy. I'm completely satisfied. And, y'know, like with similar tangents I've gone on, I'm not advocating to not think about what you listen to. By all means, be critical and dig into the weeds about it. But as far as I'm concerned, if it's fun, that's really all that matters in the end. And 'Midnight Ride' is absolutely fun. Maybe more 60's psych should take a page out of Paul & The Raiders' book. All that Summer Of Love seriousness... Maybe trade your LSD for some Double Bubble! Maybe then I wouldn't groan so much whenever you guys show up. And seriously, reader, go listen to "Good Thing" and "Hungry". Fun stuff, lemme tell you.
Quintessential 60s. Fun memories of hearing all this on the radio when I was a child.
Sounded similar to a lot of oldies I like
This album has a lot going for it, especially when you consider the time it was released. While it’s tempting to label it psychedelic rock, at its heart it’s still very much garage rock. Psychedelic elements were just beginning to emerge around this time, and this record was definitely ahead of the curve. The track “All I Really Need Is You” even touches on Indian and Middle Eastern musical influences, making it an underrated and early example of the kind of experimentation that would eventually lead to the 60’s raga rock movement.
Heel prima album, beetje country soms
Surprised how much I enjoyed this. Thought it was going to be another mostly skippable bit of 60s rock but there’s some great song writing, fun energy, and nice range in genres in here. Fun time!
brit rock ok
Listening to this album is like listening to a Nuggets or Teenage Shutdown compilation. Garage-y, psychedelic and poppy. Not every song is a winner, but the two first tracks and tracks 6-7 are really strong. Love the Cramps-like solo on track 2
It sounds like everything else released at that time. It seems like all the artists of the time were in pure musical and creative effervescence. Listening to it almost 60 years later, with my ears completely "addicted" to the more distinctive and grandiose sounds that would emerge in the following decades, this album ends up sounding incredibly average, even when compared to its contemporary releases. But it's good music, undeniable.
Good 60s tunes. Goes off the rails with the beach boys homage / parodies at the end but good up to that.
bruh i just rated this and it got rid of it, really really loved it and it’s not even that popular, a mix of the doors and the stooges two of my favs, really on point from the 60s guitarist is extremely talented, all songs have their own thing to it whilst sticking to one main genre, got a LITTLE bit repetitive toward the end but i’m not mad, fav song- there’s always tomorrow
It was pretty good, so intresting ideas excecuted with an old style that I didn't mind like I thought I would
solid 60s psych pop
84% Best: Kicks; There's Always Tomorrow; I'm Not Your Stepping Stone; Get It On Must-Hear? Sure
This was a good album not my favorite but the first half is very good, though I will say it falls off a slight bit in the latter half of the record. Overall a fun album
This was surprisingly varied
Didn't recognize the band name but I recognized a good number of the songs. There were some really great tracks and the whole album holds together. I enjoyed this one, maybe more than I should have, but definitely a worthy listen.
Today I learned Minor Threat's "Steppin' Stone" is a cover.
reminds me of being a kid. and my dad. that is always a good thing
Some more cool old hippy rock and roll. Some pretty good vibes to jam to.
That was fun, looking forward to this on vinyl next record store day.
As a child of the 60’s have heard a lot of what’s on this album but if you had asked me yesterday would not have heard of the band. Good music made in a time when things were simpler and when I was young. So reminds me of that great time and wish I was back there now instead of this stinking, woke ridden, hell hole we endure now. 4/5 8/8/25
I liked it but it felt very de-revere-tive of the Rolling Stones until the penultimate song, SS 396 which is literally just a Beach Boys song.
A pleasant surprise. Incredibly British sounding for a US band, and you can start to see the emergence of something like the stooges or early punk. Stepping Stone is a classic, but there's a handful of other good songs. Drifts into beach boy 'look at how nice my car is' stuff for a bit, but otherwise laudable. A weak 4
Groovy so W great songs. Fun addition to punk play list and a precursor to many bands sound
Didn't know this group at all, but I really liked listening to this album. Loved the harmonising (shades of Beach Boys in places) and the experimenting with the stereo channels with different instruments. Preferred their version of Stepping Stone as well. Definitely worth more listens.
Pretty solid
Always a sucker for mid 60's R&B. Paul Revere & The Raiders was the American answer to the British invasion, although they don't really sound that American besides the name. The nice part about albums from this era is that you can easily compare them to one another, since they all cover each others songs. I'm not your stepping stone was done better by The Flies, but this version is still fun. I like the album, not the best from the era but good nonetheless.
Has everything I want from a mid-60s rock album. It feels a tiny bit dated but considering its age it's remarkably fresh still. Lots of variety.
Przyjemny rock
I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed this album. Sunny, raucous riffs and a consistently bouncy rhythm section make this feel almost proto-punk (helped a long by bona fide punk classic "Stepping Stone"). Even the bits in the middle where the album, admittedly, drags a little, are interesting in a slightly experimental way. Big fan of this album!
Not bad. Solid 60’s rock album with a little splash of surfer/psych. Sounds like something that would be in a Tarantino flick. That album cover photo is lame as shit, tho, and the disinterested dude in the bottom right kind of looks like Dave Coulier. 3.5⭐️ rounding up despite that cover 😒
It was quintessential oldies, it did have a few bangers that I will rotate, but it did not super jam for me. This is not because it was bad, just because I'm not in a super oldies mood yet lol.
enjoyed a lot, nice listen
Really enjoyed. Will listen again for sure.
Good
Dang, instead of playing a 60s mix, I'm just putting this on.
4/5. Just a great mid-60s groove. Good harmonies, fun instrumentals. Surprising edge on some of the lyrics, but shmaltz on others.
They were good musicians! Who knew!
Fun record that's very much of it's time. Clearly influenced by the Beatles earlier output but not to the point of coming off as derivative. There's enough variety between tracks to keep it interesting, but unless you keep this in rotation, you'll likely forget most of it because there's nothing that really stands out beyond the 2 singles and maybe a couple of other tracks, but I enjoyed it all the same.
Very strong start with some quality tracks, mellowed out into slightly less good stuff later into the album.
Some good tunes
Really strong album, never have heard of the band. 8.1/10
I grew up listening to this type of music, but for some weird reason I didn't find this band until much later in life... I want to give this album 4.5 stars, a couple of songs slightly underperformed.
It’s actually a vibe. I like it.
The songs on this album were so catchy across the board. They weren’t very long, for the most part, but they had me coming back for multiple listens. I thought the vocals were great, but the music was the real star of the show. I’m surprised I didn’t hear about this band prior to this. Perhaps I’m unfamiliar with the “sound” of 60’s music, but this seemed more modern than that. Like something from the 80’s.
Great times
I really enjoyed this record. Great 60s production, catchy riffs and good vibes. Melody for an Unknown Girl is delightfully cheesy. Favourite tracks: Kicks, Little Girl in the 4th Row, Ballad of a Useless Man, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Take a Look at Yourself.
Eh. Mid. Decent sound. Love the group name.
These guys are all over the place. At one point I get the Doors vibes, the next I get Rolling Stones, and then they're going off talking about a car and sounding like the Beach Boys. Either way, no matter what they did, these 60's classic rockers sounded pretty good. Couple of sloggers though so only 4 stars
I’ve always been into slightly psychedelic jangly guitar bands ca 1966/67 and this is no different.
The kick -
All in all I would say I enjoyed this album. It's some good 60s fun. I feel like I hear a lot of influence from other bands of the era, but admittedly the downside of listening to this list in random order means I don't know which came first. I could research it but, eh. However "Little Girl In the 4th Row" loses it a half star, and "Melody For An Unknown Girl"....oof that's a full star off just for that. I think that fairly puts it at a 3.5 but because I really like the 60s sound I'll round up.
I didn't know much about them before listening to this album, but it seems like maybe they don't the credit they deserve? The album was a pleasant surprise--seemed ahead of its time--but based on their low number of listeners on Spotify (only about 175k) they don't appear to have nearly the following some of their contemporaries still do. The first three tracks were my favorite, but there were quality tracks throughout the album.
es muy clásico sesenton pero me gustó. Lo he escuchado otras veces en otras bandas? si. Me entretiene? también
I have a soft spot for mid 60s pop songs. Probably from all the "oldies radio" I listened to as a kid. This is nothing groundbreaking, but catchy 3 minute ditties will always get a good review from me.
That B3 makes my heart happy. Really enjoyed this album
This is actually pretty good. It definitely feels like the inspiration for Ming Tea's stuff in the Austin Powers movies. It's pretty loose and maybe borderline campy at times. It's a lot better than I expected. I'd give this a solid 3.5 stars, and I'm fine rounding up to 4 here.
Really enjoyed this one, just a lot of fun. Probably more of a 3.5 but getting a bump for the surprise factor and not overstaying its welcome.
Always liked this group. Enjoyed this album very much.
This was a pretty fun album. I feel like I’ve heard of Paul Revere before but I’m not sure why. This album reminded me very much of the Beach Boys which is never a bad thing. A special shoutout to SS396 which I was humming for the rest of the day. It made a nice soundtrack for the drive to a woodland walk, which is exactly what we did. It’s an all around fun album. Probably nothing mind blowing, but not everything needs to be.
first listen so many recognizable and classic songs
The BBMAK of the 60s. N*sync and Backstreet Boys get top accolades but plenty of snowclones were just as good
Sehr gutes und in sich geschlossenes Album
Pretty good band, enjoy the album
I had to look up whether these guys were some kind of parody or novelty act, as some of the songs really felt like they were spoofing specific other acts, but reading up on them The Monkees had a hit covering them, so I guess this kind of biting of style was the custom at the time? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyway, yeah, a fun mid sixties album - referenced a lot of the trends I like about music at this time. Fave tracks - "Kicks", "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" from the original album. Also enjoyed the bonus track "SS 396" - they obviously felt the Beach Boys included insufficient tech specs when singing about cars! 😆
I liked this! Catchy and just my sort of thing 4 ⭐️
Rather enjoyed this beastie Hadn't heard of them till now
I'd never heard of this band before, and being typical 60's fare as they are, I wasn't expecting too much. However, the album is better than I expected. I wouldn't want to put it in my library, but I might give it a listen again sometime. Hence it gets four stars.
A good fun 60s record with enough roughness to make it interesting- hadn’t heard most of this before although some of these tracks are classics. Had a good time with it.
They remind me of The Beach Boys, Monkees, and Everly Brothers; so of course I liked this album. Nice melodies and solid instrumental play.
For a few years in the mid 1960s, Paul Revere & the Raiders were one of the biggest bands in the US. In 1966, the band released three studio albums. Midnight Ride was the second of those, and is regarded as the band's best work. The band made R&B based, guitar driven rock songs. The album features "Kicks," which is one of the band's biggest singles, and "(I'm not your) Stepping Stone," which was covered by the Monkees. Some of the songs are goofy enough that they could be the Monkees, like "Melody for an Unknown Girl." Other songs could be Booker T., like "Shake it Up."
Just straight up catchy pop. Extra points for electric organ! Even a fun Beach Boys "cover".
Enjoyed, especially stepping stone. It's basic but it's good pop
Not bad at all. I don't think it's essential. There's better similar music on the list. It holds up better than, say, the byrds or the rolling stones' 60s work. Especially because there's only good songs on this album. Favorite song: stepping stone.
All in all a solid album. The love songs are crap and cost them a 5 star.
A real diverse range of styles / sounds throughout the album. Individually tracks range from good to fantastic. I'm surprised this band isn't talked about more and held in higher esteem.
Some of these were legit! 3.6.
Classic - what could have been!
Magic :) I know it's a little mid-road 60s, but I enjoyed the vibe and learning about the band! :) enjoyed this more than I expected to!
Some really good songs on this. Sort of garage band pop. Still holds up really well.
Fun 60's garage rock. Most of this was average in quality but "I'm not your stepping stone" was the highlight for me. It packed a serious groove. My God was Ss396 a bad Beach Boys soundalike.
8/10…garage rock / 60er pop
# Playlist track - Kicks # Notes - Never heard of those folks before. - Very fun. Kind of blows my mind that this came out in 1966. They sound a fair bit more modern. - The ballads are not as good, tho. - Still, worth the listen!
It was FUN! Not more and not less. I dig it.
Kicks and Not Your Steppin' Stone were cool songs. (I like the Monkees version of the latter a bit better though.) Some was cringe, like Little Girl in the 4th Row. I liked the horns in one of the tracks - can't remember which one. Some of the sounds on this album were too shrill and I had to turn down the volume.
Sounds like early Beach Boys, fun songs, great melodies.
I love these guys. Some might say they are knockoffs, but they captured a popular sound and produced fun music. This is not their best album, but it’s still solid.
This THIS is the what I rate albums for. A cracking album that I’ve never heard of and will absolutely listen to after. It had the perfect mix of sauce and substance - genuinely no complaints but perhaps not stardust. Well done Paul Revere and the Raiders!
I recognized the first song, though I didn't know the name.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. There's a lot of cool ideas here which would be used to good effect by other bands. It's a cool stepping stone between eras.
Stepping Stone is just a great tune. The rest of the record is good 60’s garage rock.
I really enjoyed listening to this one. Nothing groundbreaking, but just good late 60s rock and roll. Will listen again.
Old rock and roll. Correcto. Un 4.
Rock and roll, 1966. Un poco country rock&roll.
Love discovering a '60s band I've not heard before. Fav tracks: 'Little Girl in the 4th Row', 'All I Really Need Is You' and 'Melody for an Unknown Girl.'
Jangly rock
3.5
Good fun!
This was a great album very mid 60s!!
Classic 60s album. I never knew of this band until I watched Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood. Interesting stuff.
Især "Melody for an unknown girl" var ret pisset....
Positivt: Kicks - Fedt riff på vers Ballard of a Useless Man - Lækkert orgel I’m Not Your Stepping Stone - Groovy Baby! Total Austin Powers vibes Louie, Go Home - Udgivet samme år som Paperback Writer.
Really quite decent
I this is one of my most liked albums of this era. "Kicks" is a dope song and gets things rolling nicely. From there it's just variety, "There's Always Tomorrow" has a country vibe to, followed by the ballad "Little Girl in the 4th Row" (suspect title there thought). "Ballad of a Useless Man" has a surf rock vibe to it. The rest of the album continues along this path of variety which I really enjoy. Sometimes it feels like they're poking fun at other bands ("SS 396" sounds like they're going at The Beach Boys)
very 60s and I love it brilliant throughout although does drop towards end of the record but this band and album is exactly why I'm doing this new music to me and great music too
Gillar i princip hela skivan.
Glorious 60s rock album, it is giving me life today. Reminds me of oldies radio. Of my dad. Of his parents and their home on a large plot of farm land tucked away from civilization where my childhood was unfettered and free. Of summer days outside, barefoot always, with the radio blasting the Psychedelic Sundays program he listened to every week on Q107. It’s the sound of being young and spending time with family. Helping my Opa in the garden, putting away the groceries for my Oma. Laughing with my uncles while we played silly games and retold favourite family stories. I had a more charmed childhood than I ever realized. This is the music that transports me back there in my mind, makes me feel wistful. A sonic time capsule.
Pretty good album overall. A lot of the songs I was bobbing my head along to. Some of the songs were skippable, but a good showing from Paul Revere & The Raiders. One if by cock, two if by balls. If you're a Brit and you're reading this, how'd the American War of Independence go for you? Take that L
Amazing they had the sound in the '60s. Sort of a alt Rock sound that stands out as unique to me. Lots of recognizable songs in this album. stepping stone is a banger. There are also some misses. I don't like the girl in the fourth row song at all.
Really fun 60s rock album. It does struggle a bit with a lack of variety, but it's Paul Rever & the Raiders. They have a sound, they stay loyal to it, and they do it well.
can’t go wrong with some classic 60s rock! a nice easy listen with some great tunes, and simple yet effective riffs. this album is by no means groundbreaking, but it fits its genre nicely, and isn’t trying to be anything different. nothing much more to say. solid album!
Forever a sucker for psychy garage rock from the 60s, and this bad boy has got me reaching for the lava lamp
Nice to listen to but pretty forgettable
Kickass Garage Rock. "Kicks", "Hungry" and "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" still sparkle.
Classic 60s garage psch rock. Good stuff.
Very much enjoyed this one.
This was a fun little album and much more "hard hitting" than I expected. I feel it is also much more substantial in regards to the history of rock than I thought. Still "Beatles-esque" in a way but has some Rolling Stones and some American heaviness as well.
Mix of styles, but good.
The band name and album cover made me assume some kind of dark post-punk thing, although that wouldn't have matched the album's release date. Instead this is some pretty standard, jingely 60's rock with psychedelic elements, reminiscent of bands like The Beatles, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, etc. Nothing new, but definitely nothing bad either.
"Midnight Ride" is the fifth studio album by American rock band Paul Revere & the Raiders. Considered early "Rock and roll," this album has a strong grasp on the guitar-and-vocal-dominated driving rock beat and left a legacy in music. Their songs, "Kicks" and "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" are considerably well known (considering the almost 60 years since these songs came out) and several notable covers. From this album, it sounds as if Paul Revere & the Raiders strived to emulate the sounds of other famous groups including the Beatles, the Animals, and the Beach Boys.
Bubblegum 60s pop but honestly not the worst of them
Without this record -and records like it - modern rock and roll as we know it would not exist
Better than most things RYM sucks off. Ez 4
Solid 60s 70s soundding album
For a 60s album, I thought this was really good! Variety in songs, good rock sound, I was happy to listen to this. Listens: 1 Fave Track: I’m Not Your Stepping Stone Rating: 4
Just a solid rock record. It's probably a 3.5 but I'm giving a 4 since that option doesn't exist.
Take a ride with this album
This is one of those classics that I was always aware of, and had heard the singles, but haven’t given the full record a spin. I was pleasantly surprised by this one and how much I enjoyed it. Super simple poppy rock songs but done well. They were also known for wearing silly costumes a la Paul Revere on a horse but what’s a little gimmick to set you apart? The first track Kicks reminded me of listening to oldies (lol) with my mom and grandfather. We’d put a record on the turntable and I’d always tune into the very small sounds coming off the needle. The rest of the album is fun! There are some slow jams like Little Girl In The 4th Row (I’ll always be weirded out how in the 60’s women were pretty much only ever called Girls but whatever) and I’m a sucker for a good organ/ early synth with a touch of Mod Sensibility sound so I liked it a lot.
Wild ride (no pun intended) on this album. Opens up straight into Kicks. I love the energy here, a little garage rock, a little psych. A similar formula is used throughout at least half of the album and it just works. There's Always Tomorrow takes on a weird trip into twangy upbeat country, but somehow works in a chorus that is pure '60's pop. Weird, but it works. The only times they really lose me are on the slow burners; Little Girl in The Fourth Row and Melody for an Unknown Girl. Im just not a ballad guy.
Great 60s sound. I'm not your stepping stone was the only song I knew going in but it's a good album
It just sounds cool in an indefinable way. A real pleasure of an album. Loose and groove based in a very cool way.
Better than expected!
If you would have told me that this was a 60s tribute band, I would have believed you. That said, I like 60s pop rock so I enjoyed this.
Enjoyable listen actually... 3.5 stars.
I don’t know why people don’t like this record. For me it’s almost perfect. It has got melody and some grit to it which I like.
Groovy, old-school, not great, but good with a few weaker songs
The stereo on this album is really cool. Bass on left side, rhythm guitar on the right. Pretty good.
my favorite thing about this record is they sound like they are having fun. but it was a good.album and.i didnt realize I had heard the song Kicks before- always liked it and now i know who does it.
These guys sound like The Doors, or Sgt. Pepper era Beatles. Pretty solid 60's synth pop/psychadelic rock. Apparently these guys used to dress as civil war reenactors on stage during their shows. Favourite songs: SS 396, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, There's Always Tomorrow, Ballad of a Useless Man, "Louis, Go Home", Get It On, Shake It Up, Kicks Least favourite songs: Melody For An Unknown Girl 4/5
Tydligt sent 60-tals sound men med mindre tydliga psykadeliska element.
“Kicks” is a timeless opener—never has a finger wagging anti-drug song sounded so groovy.
This was a fun album. I have seen them in concert….a version of them anyway. I totally get why people would go see them in concert. This group has that 60’s mellow rock feel. The songs are good.
It’s been a while since I’ve gotten a 4 star album that was as unmemorable as this. I like this band and this type of music but I can’t name a single song that I thought stood out.
Definitely better than I thought. It's a bit all over the place in terms of sound, but that's to be expected with all of the band members contributing to the songwriting and fighting to the death over whose songs get to be on the album. I think this album deserves a place on the list.
Oldies 104.3 mom's Chevy Celebrity station wagon memories. Nice to hear this on a hibres system rather than the am/fm radio in that old car. "And don't it seem like Kicks just keep gettin' harder to find And all your kicks ain't bringin' you peace of mind Before you find out it's too late, girl You better get straight"
süper albüm tekrar dinlerim
I actually really liked this. This style of music is my shit. Notable tracks include I’m not your stepping stone, there she goes, ss396
Album is much stronger on headphones - the stereo is great. The warmth of the sound is so easy to listen to. This isn't perfect but it's a good listen. This is a light four but it's better than a three.
Cool album cover. The strings sound amazing. Driving, warm. Track lengths in the sweet spot. Stereo sound in headphones sounds great. Started off strong but at the end of it quite a few of the songs miss the mark. Favorite tracks: Kicks, There's always Tomorrow, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone Nothing against the album but the band's name isn't great. It's a mouth full.
Classic 60's!
Accessible and likeable collection of songs by this classic garage rock band. Very danceable numbers, with hints of surf rock era beach boys evident too. Stepping Stone the highlight, along with Kicks and Get it On
I’m pretty sure that I’ve had another Paul revere and the raiders album. This one was really good!
This was fun. The album came out in 1966 and create a discussion with my mom regather music we grew up with in our home when I was little. Mom said she didn’t have this album and it wasn’t really her style. She listed the albums we had in our home from the 60s and I realize that I probably know all the words to those. For this album, I was familiar with the main songs but the whole album. It was cool to hear similar music to the Stones from the same era.
Liked it.
Honestly I love 60s pop. Could listen to this on repeat. Is it a great album? Nah. But i like it a lot. Above average. 4
Pretty good, had some punkiness
Some 60s rock! alright. Very interesting name for a band and album. I like that the first 3 tracks all sound different from one another. Little Girl in the 4th Row has some Beach Boys vibes, and the second a bit of Johnny Cash. Oh shit! I'm Not Your Stepping Stone! I've heard this! Melody for an Unknown Girl is pretty too.
Fun- didn’t stand out but I enjoyed.
Hey, this was pretty solid, and I actually knew a couple tunes. Good representation of the era.
Besser gleich die Beatles
talk about a cool vibe to kick off the new year. this album is such a good example of some of that real early rock that set the foundation for many more artists, bands, and fans that would come along the line. this is nitty-gritty OG rock... or perhaps punk in its infancy, and man is it a good listen. yes, these guys did the whole revolutionary war getup. i love that.
Feels like a mix of Johnny Cash, The Doors, The Zombies, Elvis, The Beach Boys and The Beatles. Seriously, its like each song is by a different artist of this selection. lots of catchy hooks and inventive song writing, although some songs do follow typical 60's rock clichés. I enjoyed this one if you can't already tell. Favourites were Get It On & I'm Not Your Stepping Stone. Don't listen to them chatter, you've got to use your own grey matter!
Psychedelia!!! Favorite track: Little Girl in the 4th Row
Solid album. I properly enjoyed this. Definitely some bangers on here (Kicks). Even the songs I didn’t enjoy all that much were pretty good. Definitely an upbeat vibe to the whole album
Very nice
Old rock and roll. Correcto. Un 4.
I'm predisposed to love this simply because Quentin Tarantino is a huge fan. Even without that knowledge, I found myself dancing like Margot Robbie's Sharon Tate character in "Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood". This thing slaps hard, even the ballads are interesting. Turns out these fellas busted out I'm Not Your Stepping Stone before The Monkees. The Spotify algorithm is strong with this one. They threw ten more gems at me after this album ended. Tarantino and Spotify get me.
There was a lot to like here - like a Beatles/Stones/Beach Boys mashup. Some cool left turns and spot-on musicality. I will listen to these fellas again.
I couldn't work out if that's was actual 60s or pretend 60s, which was weird. Jolly 60s vibez
This kind of garagey psych pop is like comfort food to me. Although they're trying to break from their manufactured pop image, and into being a "real" rock band, by doing more of their own songwriting, the standout tracks are still the Brill Building numbers.
Igen et old School rock and Roll album.
good vibes
There were a few bops on this album
Rock and roll, 1966. Un poco country rock&roll.
3.75
threw a bunch of sixties garage pop riffs into a blender, which was probably the best place for them, frankly
Rock
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Kicks, Ballad of a useless man, I’m not your stepping stone, There she goes, All I really need is you
Man, pop in the 60s hit different huh? Stand out songs: - Melody for an Unknown Girl - Corvair Baby
4-
Apparently, Paul Revere & The Raiders were making the music that I hoped more well-known bands like Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and The Doors were doing instead. They all fall into the same sound, but this is better executed. The instrumentation is more interesting, the songs are varied, and the overall sound is cleaner. Standouts are Ballad of a Useless Man and I'm Not Your Stepping Stone.
BEST SONGS: -All I Really Need Is You -Little Girl in the 4th Row
Tight little 60s rock and roll album, honestly no complaints, just missed an extra shine or two to pump it all the way up.
4.0
I tend to forget that even though it was the 60s bands like this made songs that laid the groundwork for modern (and post-modern) rock of every stripe. There are some absolute bangers on here.
legal, rockzao das antiga, animado
Reminds of 60s Stones
This was peak American 60s pop rock and it rocks
A fun little album that clocks in at just under 30 minutes.
Early rock from the 60s, yet I think has a more advanced sound to it.
Really cool, stylish sound with attitude for the time and great harmonies
Not a bad album, but it just did not do it for me. Should deserve a 5 star, I just don't want the algorithm to think I enjoyed this album a lot therefore I'm giving it 4 stars.
I really enjoyed this - it was a bit bland and not memorable, but that was the charm. I fell asleep twice listening to it.
Always liked Minor Threat's Stepping Stone cover. The original isn't bad either, but this album is all over the place. Too many cooks in the kitchen here, but it does give a view into how trippy crazy the 60's were. These guys were kinda nuts, doing their best to break the molds they were forced into and I can respect that.
Okay admittedly this kinda washed over me
Classic early rock and roll, very much of its time and pretty darn good. 4 stars.
This garage rock album is pretty catchy. The first side is very good, riff filled and energetic. The second one is less good but still enjoyable. Pretty good album overall but not essential. 7,4/10
Really fun listen. The ways in which it's aged poorly are more endearing than distracting.
4/5
This was pretty cool. I had never heard of this band but they have that classic 60s rock/psychedelic sound like The Stones, The Who, The Doors, etc.
enjoyable rock and roll! some songs I really enjoyed. a fun record through and through.
One of those “clearly representative of an iconic sound of an era” pieces but where I only actually recognized one song. Altogether it’s a fairly weird album, some psychedelic leaning parts, a couple pretty out there experimental numbers, but then some super lazy “I got a dope car” numbers as well. Extra point for the bizarre swings in vibe.
Classic
I really enjoyed this late '60s fun (if sometimes quite dated). Hey, they're from Boise!
7/10. Liked a few songs quite a bit, and the rest were generally pleasant
Cool!
I likeee
Really enjoyed this listen, and had no clue that they sang 'Stepping Stone'
This was good
A very enjoyable 60’s rock album. Best song was Kicks.
Did not know this album / band - not sure if it belongs to the list but I quite liked it: good-sounding 60s garage rock except for the last song (Melody..), which I would give 5 stars.
Great! There were enough songs I wanted to return to to make this album a 4/5 for me
Tuntematon platta mutta aika tiukkaa jopa aika Kinks henkistä garageajeluu! Siis täähän oli ihan munan kova! Miten en oo kuullu tätä aikaisemmin??? I’m not your steppin’ stone on todella väkevä 4/5
A band I wasn't familiar with, but I like this album. A bit pop, a bit garage, a bit psychedelic, with a bit of soul thrown in.
Bold, unpretentious 60s pop rock. Not a lot not to like. enjoyed it as an album in 2022 so its prob worth an extra point for being written in 1966. 4/5
Fun 60s rock. A few real bangers on here, especially Shake It Up, Kicks, and I'm Not Your Stepping Stone
1,001 albums... There was a time when I had little or no interest in post-British invasion garage rock but I really dig this stuff when I'm in the mood these days. I don't know a great deal about Paul Revere and the Raiders beyond the fact that they had plenty of hits in the USA in the mid- sixties and that they used to dress up in American revolution gear - something which no doubt gave them a bit of attention but affected their credibility long-term. Anyway, I enjoyed this album for the large part. The garage rock stuff is energetic and fun and there are more than hints of the Beach Boys in the mushier numbers. A keeper.
Great groovy album love the 60's pop rock organ sounds. A very rock n' roll feeling.
Good time.
Enjoyable 60s rock that sounds very Beatles esque
pretty good, I loved how much they messed with time signatures, regularly jumping between a 4/4 and 3/4 I’ll give it a 7/10
Pretty good - never heard this before…
That was cool, though first half was better
Love this album! A great slice of mid-60s psych.
This is a really sweet album. Kind of reminds me of the Yardbirds. I especially love the closing track!
Very cool early-Beatles sort of thing. Catchy and fun. I could happily listen to this any day
- Nice breadth of genre - feels influential, almost white stripes-esque? - strong musicianship
Few good tracks. Has different styles that I associate with various bands from this era. Seems like they have good range.
Decent actually. The melody song was cool
This is mostly banging. Enjoyed much more than I expected.
Really enjoyed this. Nice variety and every song has a great hook
