Great! There were enough songs I wanted to return to to make this album a 4/5 for me

Tuntematon platta mutta aika tiukkaa jopa aika Kinks henkistä garageajeluu! Siis täähän oli ihan munan kova! Miten en oo kuullu tätä aikaisemmin??? I’m not your steppin’ stone on todella väkevä 4/5

A band I wasn't familiar with, but I like this album. A bit pop, a bit garage, a bit psychedelic, with a bit of soul thrown in.

Bold, unpretentious 60s pop rock. Not a lot not to like. enjoyed it as an album in 2022 so its prob worth an extra point for being written in 1966. 4/5

Fun 60s rock. A few real bangers on here, especially Shake It Up, Kicks, and I'm Not Your Stepping Stone

1,001 albums... There was a time when I had little or no interest in post-British invasion garage rock but I really dig this stuff when I'm in the mood these days. I don't know a great deal about Paul Revere and the Raiders beyond the fact that they had plenty of hits in the USA in the mid- sixties and that they used to dress up in American revolution gear - something which no doubt gave them a bit of attention but affected their credibility long-term. Anyway, I enjoyed this album for the large part. The garage rock stuff is energetic and fun and there are more than hints of the Beach Boys in the mushier numbers. A keeper.

Great groovy album love the 60's pop rock organ sounds. A very rock n' roll feeling.

Good time.

Enjoyable 60s rock that sounds very Beatles esque

pretty good, I loved how much they messed with time signatures, regularly jumping between a 4/4 and 3/4 I’ll give it a 7/10

Pretty good - never heard this before…

That was cool, though first half was better

Love this album! A great slice of mid-60s psych.

This is a really sweet album. Kind of reminds me of the Yardbirds. I especially love the closing track!

Very cool early-Beatles sort of thing. Catchy and fun. I could happily listen to this any day

- Nice breadth of genre - feels influential, almost white stripes-esque? - strong musicianship

Few good tracks. Has different styles that I associate with various bands from this era. Seems like they have good range.

Decent actually. The melody song was cool

This is mostly banging. Enjoyed much more than I expected.

Really enjoyed this. Nice variety and every song has a great hook

Mix of styles from kinks beatles doors and some songs you know. 4 is generous but hey

This one was fun! I especially liked the last song, thought it was a very silly but fun premise. Would like to listen to the full album, as I only found it on youtube and some songs were unavailable :(

Mood: Fake-Hippies

Rock and roll, 1966. Un poco country rock&roll.

Kicks is great

mmm catchy. ‘melody for an unknown girl’ best track. this was cool cos there was range and it felt really well composed. OG stepping stone whaaaaaat?!

It's a fun album, but not something I'd gravitate towards. I love melody for an unknown girl's saxophone part.

6/10 Yep, 60s pop. It's ok.

My goodness, that was boring. The '60s saw many musical breakthroughs and upheavals. Great music was created that continues to have an impact today and still holds up. This album is a good example of how things could have been different—in this case, ordinary and boring. 3/5

Man, I really did not want to listen to this. I don’t like this stuff. The first song sounds exactly like what I expected - a Beatles wanna-be clone. But then it got a bit interesting and toe-tappy. It was like every other song was pretty good. So I don’t know what to make of it. The last song was garbage, but there were some good songs on here, so I’ll give it a 3. Probably should be 2.5

60’s pop rock vibes. It’s alright. A few of the songs were decent, others were tedious and annoying. Edgier Beach Boys sound. (3)

This is a solid little snapshot of mid-60s American rock, which is already working in its favor since this is one of my favorite eras. You can hear garage rock starting to get rougher around the edges while the pop side is still hanging around with the harmonies, organs, and big catchy choruses. “Kicks” is a banger. I’ve heard that song a million times, and it’s still easily the highlight here. Their cover of “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” was good too, and it was interesting hearing their version knowing the Monkees would have the much bigger hit with it later that same year. “Get It On” caught my attention mostly because Mark Lindsay sounds a lot like Mick Jagger on it. That sneering vocal delivery could’ve come straight off an early Stones record. There’s enough variety to keep the album moving, and I liked the slightly tougher garage rock stuff more than the straightforward pop songs. Nothing besides “Kicks” really blew me away but a good album from a great era.

Quite nice but I feel like there were a LOT of people like this around this time. Stepping stone ended up being covered by Ant and Dec, I met them on the tour they did of that and they were really nice.

I'd listen to it again. 3

5.0/10 Liked a few songs

One of America’s better beat groups. This album has a lot of fun, nostalgic sounds, but it’s hard to distinguish it from its peers on both sides of the pond.

Fairly generic 60s stuff but an enjoyable listen.

Yes. Quite.

Some great fun and varied tracks. Real shmoove. Unfortunately, I have no nostalgia for this band so it's another 60s record that I likely won't come back to.

This one is interesting but honestly I think a lot of what it does would be done better by other people later.

This is #day722 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to some '60s rock 'n' roll, right? It's been a while. I haven't heard of this band before, but I don't really mind what I'm hearing. The sax on "Melody for an Unknown Girl," though. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day723.

Starts off really strong with Kicks, but basically devolves into bog standard psych rock. Not bad, but not blowing me away.

Midnight Ride by Paul Revere & The Raiders was a fun listen. They struck me as an elevated garage band—just enough catchy hooks and musical chops to rise above the pack. I don’t really have anything critical to say about it. At one point, I could’ve sworn my dad told me these guys were one of his favorite bands from the ‘60s, but now I’m second-guessing that memory. If that were true, you’d think I would’ve heard a lot more Paul Revere & The Raiders growing up. Maybe I’m remembering it wrong. Maybe it was The Animals. At this point, I honestly can’t remember, so take that for what it’s worth.

As expected. No notes.

It was alright upbeat 60s music. Nothing to really draw me back in for repeat listens.

Kicks 3.6 There's Always Tomorrow 3.4 Little Girl in the 4th Row 3.5 Ballad of a Useless Man 3.3 (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone 3.5 There She Goes 3.2 All I Really Need Is You 3.6 Get It On 3.4 Louie, Go Home 3.2 Take a Look at Yourself 3.5 Melody For an Unknown Girl 3 Score: 3.381818182

Definitive sound of a particular moment in time. Not for me.

(7) It was good, nothing special.

Good 60s sounds

I enjoyed this a little more than a normal 60'psychadelic pop/rock album. It had a little more spunk and excitement, maybe more mainstream and less totally high on something. I am sure critically that makes it worse but overall i liked it more, not necessarily 4 but easily a 3.75. Except SS 396, I didn't hate it but it felt really out of place with the rest.

This was nice old timey classic rock. Good vinyl vibes!

Most of this was fun 1960s pop, apart from Melody for an Unknown Girl, which is unadulterated cheese.

That was alright. My favourite was All I Really Need Is You. The tempo changes made it more interesting.

Pretty inoffensive 60s music, not very memorable.

Fun. My older sister was really into Paul Revere & the Raiders, so I was probably sorta subliminally primed for this. Heh. Charming 60s sounds. Not profound, of course. I appreciated listening to an album with so many distinct POVs (different band members’ songs). 3.5?

Hey, hey young fellas, are we uhh doin' a bit here? I want to know how to listen to this so I don't get beat up by the cool kids hanging out down in the catacombs. Are we making fun of 50's doo wop a la, Frank Zappa? Orrr are we doing the song about racin' in my SS *pause* 396, as a real genuine expression? Are we seriously serenading the UGH "little girl" in the 4th row, or is that just a rib at the man, man? Please tell me, I am lost and it's cold down here. The ballad of a useless man addressed me directly and there are some intoxicating melodies on this thing. There are moments of humour which makes me feel like they are being sarcastic, but these guys got so good at making smiley 50's music that it is kind of the best of that genre. It's like in an attempt to razz the theatre kid, you became able to portray Othello in a manner which brings a local high school gymnasium to tears. That is a repurposed (see worsened) joke from 2010 film, "The Other Guys," but what are the odds, that you are a) reading this b) aware of that and c) invested enough to care. Why am I even admitting this? Whatever. Paul Revere really stayed around an additional 200 years to record a psychedelic comedy doo-wop record and then spontaneously splintered into a pile of bone dust. That's a spicy uhh revolutionary. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Are you being sarcastic, dude? I don't even know anymore.

A really nice surprise. I didn't expect much going in, but it turned out to be a pleasant listen. Interesting mix between an early Beatles / Rolling Stones sound and a rougher Vietnam-era blues-rock, with even a hint of surf rock peppered here and there. It's a bit uneven though. I did enjoy the trippy psych-rock parts, but some songs are really too close to a straight-up Beatles imitation, without the Beatles' energy or wholesomeness (Little Girl and There She Goes bored me and felt overly derivative). Not a life-changing discovery, but I really loved a handful of songs (Kicks, There's Always Tomorrow, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Get It On...). I'll probably give the album another try in a few days or weeks. 6/10

Never heard of these guys before, but it ended up working pretty well for me, mostly thanks to the deep, sometimes rough-edged vocals. The Beatles-inspired ballads are definitely the weaker moments. Surprisingly, the singles are the rockiest tracks, and they’re genuinely cool. The rest is average and not very original. Then my Deezer mix throws on Vehicle by The Ides of March… and the comparison is brutal. That’s an instant minus one star. Zero bias. :)

The Sixties gave us so much great music that it’s not easy for some of the bands of the era to stand out and be heard by later generations. I certainly had heard of Paul Revere and the Raiders, though I would have been hard pressed to recall the songs they were famous for. Midnight Ride shows what I was missing. It’s pop music, maybe almost garage rock, but not as dangerous as the full garage rock experience. Listening to it, I felt like I was listening to an oldies station back in the Eighties - when they played the hits of the Fifties and Sixties. I recognized I’m Not Your Stepping Stone, but I’d only been aware of the Monkees’ version. I can say that I quite enjoyed the album. Not sure it belongs on the project, but I’m not complaining. 3.5 stars

Couple bangers but the rest seem like cheap 60s knock offs... A band that couldn't figure out who they wanted to be.

This actually goes kinda hard sometimes. That Volk bass playing/sound is really something else. Some of the guitar and keyboard playing is cool too. Kind of a witchy twist on the psychedelic rock sound of the time. The songs are of inconsistent quality though and I dislike generally creepy patronizing vocal tone though.

Enjoyable enough, nothing super notable but felt a step above typical 60's pop

It’s ok. Some good songs, but kind of seems like a Temu version of the better music that was being put out at the time.

Never heard of this band before but I liked the sound and the music! Great first song, very catchy. I have to admit that i didnt really listen to the lyrics (I listened purely for the vibe - and that was nice). It was a nice listen, but i also think i will forget about it again. Thats why i give it 3 stars.

I love how this is so cheesy even Quentin Tarantino had to make fun of it

Day923 - honestly this is a good album with some good songs but my cynical self says we’ve heard all this before from five other bands

Kicks is a great single. Nothing else here is at that level, but it's solid.

This album sounds like it could have been recorded by the Monkees even if you left off Not Your Stepping Stone. (Nice cover though.) I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. The sound and vibe bring me back to my younger days. 3.5/5

A respectable album, but I think I preferred them in their "Louie Louie" years, when they were a bit more of their own band and not so much a British Invasion imitator. Though, I must admit, they were one of the best imitators of the British invasion sound. They are well regarded around these parts, as their career broke when they relocated to Portland, Oregon. But I'll admit that this album, while a guilty pleasure, is probably not an essential album. Favorites: "Kicks", "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone", "Louie, Go Home", "Melody for an Unknown Girl" (I'm the target market for sax and vibes in a pop song and I enjoyed the humor)

Really easy listening. No standouts but nothing bad. Really good "average" album. Sounds clean for a 60s album. Nice cohesive sound while still having plenty of variety. Probably SS 396 being the only song that was close to a turn off (song about a car), but I'll give them some slack as a product of their time.

Some cool end of the 60's vibes. Not great but not insufferable.

If you took every album that came out in the 60s and put it in a meat grinder, you'd get sausage that tastes like this album. Not great. Not terrible. LarryDavid_eh.gif

The most 3 star album I’ve ever heard

Very good 60’s record

Happy Fourth of July to me... this is fine I guess

Tá ok.

It’s alright. Nothing bad about this album, but nothing spectacular either. 2.5/5 Might listen again

To me, indistinguishable from lots of other 60s/70s rock groups minus what makes all of its competitors interesting

3/5. Pretty meh. Incredibly average

Nice from a 60s album

This was whatever Playlist add: "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone

Good garage rock is always a fun listen, and this definitely is good and fun. Alongside the garage staples like stepping stone there’s some great jangle and really pleasing harmonies too. Ignore the lyrics as they a little problematic but stay for the power chords (ignore the closing track though, it’s like Acker Bilk)

↑: Kicks; Ballad of a Useless Man; There She Goes; All I Need Is You; Shake It Up; SS 396 ↓: Little Girl in the 4th Row; Louie, Go Home; Melody for an Unknown Girl

I really liked their very 60’s style. Good stuff.

Not bad, but not great either. Every musical idea has been done better both before and after by other artists.

Ho hum

A 60s band I've never heard of, which is rare on this list. Revere's keyboards make "Midnight Ride" a bit better. The best song on the album is "Kicks", the track that's used to sell the album. You know "Midnight Ride" has nothing else special when the other singles aren't mentioned on the cover. At least the album is only half an hour long. 3 stars for "Midnight Ride".

I know this band… pretty standard 60’s fare. Jangly. Wholesome. Feels like trouble brewing in the sock hop parking lot where the bad kids went to smoke.

A bit of a sampling of different 60s vibes. A fun listen.

This is an album from 1966 but it sounds like something closer to 56. not a knock its a fun little album.

I had no idea Minor Threat's "Stepping Stone" was a cover of "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone". Paul Revere & the Raiders sounds pretty typical of a late-60's English rock band, but they're Americans. The songwriting puts them over the edge for me. Very listenable. Probably not essential, but quite good!

Typisk 60s rockpop. 5/10

Sounds catchy. But not enough for me to save any of the songs

Good but very standard. Blissfully short

This was a bit fun, not sure how the artist outsold everyone but the Beatles and Rolling Stones

It's fine. It's probably not fair because it's like rating a Beatles album without understanding their full evolution, but it basically feels like early Beatles if they never showed their full range.

Paul Revere & The Raiders - nie gehört! Deswegen mag ich diese Seite!

Like most old rock albums, I feel a need to revisit this one to give actual thoughts on it. On first listen it's pretty standard stuff, but who knows, maybe it'll grow on me. 3 for "wouldn't skip, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to."

I really struggled with this album. There’s much to love about it, but it also often sounds like a band trying to copy the sound of the Beatles and the Beach Boys. There’s some great songwriting on this album, and some really bad songwriting as well, so I’m a bit torn. I don’t think I would include it in my personal list of 1001 albums you need to listen to before you die.

3 - decent

Beatles wannabes.

Kind of a nondescript psychedelic rock album. Perfectly fine and didn’t stand out

I found them sort of a copy cat of various 60s bands sounds - Beach Boys, The Monkeys, etc. they weren’t bad but just very generic 60s that if wasn’t mention the was Paul Revere I wouldn’t have known any better.

Now this was a collection of songs... Felt like a compilation or a mixtape, not so much an album. At times it felt like songs from different bands. I can see why this would make someone want to leave the band.

Definitely strikes me as a hits grab. Throw everything at the wall and hope we get a hit. I hear Beatles, beach boys, kinks. The thing is though, they are pretty good and their rockabilly stuff with an edge is fun.

old school. classic. vibes.

Based on the band name and cover, I was expecting some old-fashioned rock and roll. I was half right on that assumption, as they drag classic rock and roll from the fifties into the sixties by taking influence from bands like the Beatles and the Byrds. The guitars are jangly and the bass pops in the mix. They take aim on drug use on 'Kicks'. Whilst it may have been bold move to make an anti-drug song when so much innovative music was coming out in part by people experimenting with psychedelics, the song is good enough that you overlook the preachy message. They stick to their sound and don't stray from it too much, but the added grit that they add to their take on 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone' is welcome and I can see why future punk bands like Sex Pistols and Minor Threat would make that a staple. This is nothing ground-breaking, but it is enjoyable for it was and the short running time doesn't allow the record to stagnante.

This album didn’t change my life but I enjoyed it a lot

Well, that was fun. I was in 8th grade, and in a garage band made up of best friends. Not really good, but great memories and a bunch of fun. Only really know two songs on here, Kicks and I'm not your stepping stone. I guess that's all you need back then, one or two really good songs, and a spot on Dick Clark.

3.4 As far as the 60s generic pop bands go this was a pretty good outing, two stand out tracks (Stepping Stones and Get It On) amongst a sea of pretty generic pop. Too many early Beatles rip offs like Little Girls and There She Goes stop it from being anything greater. Still, a decent band, a nice mix of Beatles/Stones/Beach Boys vibes, and a fair bit better than other 60s outings from this list.

There were some good songs. A good blend between early sixties and late sixties

Very cool late 60s early 70s vibe. Solid 3 leaning towards 4.

This is my first time hearing this group and their music. I'm guessing they're the US response to the British Invasion? The album cover explicitly says that this includes the song Kicks... which made me figure that I had probably heard it before. But that was not the case. But I'm guessing from the context that the song is not about shoes. There is definite influence from the Beatles and the Stones, but it feels like they're going out of their way to be safe and non controversial -- It feels like they were going for mass appeal. This album is fun, but I don't know that it will be particularly memorable moving forward.

This was fine. Not as noteworthy of a 60’s release. Not an unenjoyable listen but not pushing the envelope either. 1 listen

Maybe like 3.5, not bad but didn’t really stand out

It was fine.

#928. These guys sound like they're impersonating seven different bands at one. 3/5: acceptable

S'alright, bit samey.

Classic 60s rock.

I don't know if im getting a bit more cynical in this process but the 60s is over represented with very similar sounding records.

Back to back songs about cars means that I can't rate this higher than a 3. There are some interesting songs though, mixed in with super average ones. I really like All I Really Need Is You. The changing meters and modal harmonies & guitar riffs are cool.

This gave me beach boys crossed with the Beatles

Tal vez. Pistas destacadas Little Girl in the 4th Row I'm Not Your Stepping Stone There She Goes All I Really Need Is You

Some song were catchy. 60s pop album Standout songs: Kicks Im not your stepping stone Take a look at yourself

A very solid '60s album.

Perfectly fine Jangle pop

Its pleasant enough and easy to listen to but I'm struggling to see what's influencial enough about it to see it included on this list.

Like it 3/5

Old school rock not bad have heard similar stuff before

Don't know their name, but had heard some songs. Eh, the wear their influences blatantly. Another album where a man singing about little girls, yuck. Definition of mid 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No 65/263 (25%) Will I get: No

Nothing terrible, certainly not mandatory

It's ok I guess, but nothing to write home about. This is my last album on this list. Good luck out there, it isn't easy everyday, but we manage.

This is pure 3 stars. Paul Revere & The Raiders were a good band, a few psychedelic passages here and there, okay songs. A pleasant listen, but nothing so genius that it is logical to find it on this list.

This album mostly sucks, but Kicks is a great fuckin' tune. I had a live album from these guys that sounded like the Sonics. This does not.

I liked it more than I expected but man mark lindsay creeps me out

I found this one pretty engaging, though a hits compilation is probably more useful since the songs individually don't feel like they have a ton of nuance. I randomly saw these guys live in the 90s as a legacy act a local music festival. The chorus to "Indian Reservation" is permanently stuck in my head for all time.

Precious?

Pretty good classic rock album. Enjoyed every song.

1 - Kicks (a classic garage rock instrumental plays atop a somewhay mysterious R&B melody; it's quite the interesting contrast especially for one of the band's best-known songs. A very strong start to this album) 4/5 2 - There's Always Tomorrow (a bluesy shuffle and speak-sung performance make this into a fun travelling romp. The minimalist guitar solo is a very nice touch and, coupled with the intermittent organ, lends a strangely psychedelic feel to this song) 4/5 3 - Little Girl in the 4th Row (a slower ballad about a pretty girl next door. Many, many songs like this came out in this era, all with a very similar tempo any lyrical content. This one is decent enough but doesn't necessarily stick out of the bunch) 3.5/5 4 - Ballad of a Useless Man (a down on its luck surf rock romp, odd juxtaposition given the lyrics compared to the upbeat instrumental. A solid inclusion on this album as it's a straight-to-the-point that fits perfectly) 4/5 5 - I'm Not Your Stepping Stone (the band returns to the more conventional Zombies/Animals/Kinks type of song but with a slightly harder edge not unlike what more dedicated garage bands would do both currently and in the years following them. It thrashes around here and there for a few seconds, giving this song a legitimate punk energy, though punk was about a decade away from being a fully-fledged genre) 4/5 6 - There She Goes (a much more lighthearted song with another girl-next-door story as its subject matter. It's here that I realize this album sort of sounds like a pastiche of much of the popular rock music of the era it was released in, which is maybe why this band is not as recognized as many of their contemporaries given how catch-all this album has been so far) 3.5/5 7 - All I Really Need Is You (this song starts with an almost Middle Eastern riff and goes at a much more gradual pace that the rest of the toe-tapping one the album has favoured to this point. The layered harmonies help this song stand out compared to the rest as well. Like the second song, the riff lends a psychedelic quality, though the choruses almost serve to snap the listener out of that mood) 4/5 8 - Get It On (led more by the organ and a wavy guitar strum, the title almost makes you feel like it would be a precursor to the T-Rex song, but it ends up being a more standard pop rock tune of its era barring the pretty fiery guitar solo and harder edged sound overall. Another strong highlight of this album) 4/5 9 - Louie, Go Home (a nearly Day-Tripper/Pretty Woman riff introduces us to this song with its distant voice. The album has a great mix for its time with some interesting choices made like the ones on this song. The instrumental section once again has hints of a psychedelic Middle Eastern flavour and offer an actually jarring switch up before the main motif returns. Another highlight in this already strong back half) 4/5 10 - Take a Look at Yourself (a standard, paint-by-numbers beat song for the time. Nothing much to say about it save that it's brief enough not to make the last part of the album drag too much, though its inclusion is sort of a head-scratcher given it does nothing special unlike most of the others) 3/5 11 - Melody for an Unknown Girl (the final song features a brief spoken intro before transitioning to a soft instrumental with a smooth pensive trumpet as its lead instrument. For some reason the chimes in the back of the mix lend an uncomfortable feel to this song. Not sure how to feel about this one...) 3/5 OVERALL - 7.4/10

Pleasant. The Italian version of a song was a nice surprise.

60s rock moment, I'm slightly over it

Not really my thing but certainly listenable.

Groovy, baby. Spotify now has the ability to tag a song so you can listen to it without it being counted heavily towards your listening algorithm. I think the mark of whether or not an album gets at least three stars now is if I don’t feel the need to tag any/all songs. This album made the cut, but just barely.

Good 60's vibes. Easy listen. A couple of good tracks

Well, it’s garagey and it’s 27 minutes… sure! I should’ve guessed that this was an American band… seeing that they’re called “Paul revere…” but they sound so British! And that is absolutely to a fault! They seem to be some sort of Herman’s hermits types, super huge in their time, but no one remembers them now because what is there to remember? I mean, “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone” is pretty awesome, and “There She Goes” is very pleasant, but for every stroke of interest there’s a song that just feels… eh. This album also really doesn’t do that much novel stuff anyway, to the point where it makes one wonder why it’s seen as something seminal. However, even though I don’t intend to return to this much, the garage elements end up cutting through some of the more elementary parts of the music and lyrics to the point where I can say it’s at least not bad. 6.9/10

Started strong and then petered out

Day 235 Fine if pretty throwaway 60’s pop. Highlight I’m not your stepping stone

As generic garage rock this album might be, I think it is fun, catchy and has a great charm. A lot of the essence comes from the pleasant and sometimes with attitude voice and occasional great riffs. The best example I can give is the song "I'm Not Your Steeping Stone", which is my favourite from this record. It has a rather energetic choruses where the voice is screaming and the rhythm is very frenetic in comparison with the rest of the track list. Another examples of songs I liked are "Kicks", "There's Always Tomorrow" and "Ballad of a Useless Man", which basically translates as the first half of the album having the best moments, while the second one has the most forgettable and generic parts. In opposition, a couple of songs I didn't like are the creepy "Little Girl in the 4th Row", as once again, people really liked to sign about how the love little girls back in the day, and "Melody for an Unknown Girl" with its corny lyrics, even though the saxophone was quite soothing. So in the end, a good album. Its length might also had to be a contributing factor to not make the experience feel too tedious or monotonous, as this lasts about 27 minutes.

Unremarkable, caught in the in-between of like psych and the early 60s

ngl, this was fun

Very generic mid sixties rock

A decent 60’s album with a few songs I liked. Overall nothing special to me.

I really kind of get into the 65 to 66 pre psychedelic era where you can see the wheels turning even though they don't match what comes even less than a year later. I can't say that this is a prime example of that sound either. The two best songs on the album were the ones written by outside sources, "Kicks" and "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone" (and as far as I'm concerned this should have been the definitive version of "Stepping Stone" over the Monkees version released later that year) Even though this is not to me a prime example of innovation, there's some things that I kind of noticed about this album. "Get It On" it's probably one of the best Doors knockoff songs I've ever heard... Except this was 1966. And the verses of "All I Really Need Is You" sound like what Jefferson Airplane would perfect by the beginning of 67 (even though the chorus firmly lands in Mamas & Pappas territory) There are also a couple of absolute dog tracks here "Girl from the 4th Row" which is a generic 60s ballad slog, and "Unknown Girl" which actually sounds like 1961 dreck more than it sounds like 1966. (7.2) ★★★½

Very typical of its era, but not really anything standing out. 3 stars

There's a few good songs on here, but some real clunkers too. "Kicks" and "Stepping Stone" are pretty great. The less said about "Melody for an Unknown Girl", the better. 3 stars.

I don’t know about ‘Revere’. Everything about them seems dorky and not essential in any way. Very derivative of British Invasion groups, there’s still a couple of decent cuts or so. I’m Not Your Stepping Stone is a halfway banger that you can kinda shake your moptop to. I’d much prefer a Moonlight Drive from the Doors than a Midnight Ride from Paul Why-Is-This-On-Here and the 1001 List Raiders though. Get Strange Days on this list instead.

Decent album

Not really my thing but enjoyable

Are they your stepping stone? They say no. I’m not convinced. This band probably would have been great to see live back in their prime, but I’m just not motivated to seek out more of their jams.

Fun, but not essential. Not one I’ll revisit but I’m happy to have checked it out.

A couple of great hits, a few more good songs, and then the majority is pretty underwhelming. It’s a nice listen, but didn’t blow me away.

This one looks quick and easy. I think I've heard one song off it before? When i was a teenager making spotify playlists of songs that charted the billboard top 100 in past decades. The cover looks familiar, but I might be mixing it up with something else? 1. Kicks - Yeah, I think I've heard this one before. It's fine. I like the guitars 2. There's Always Tomorrow - Why does this remind me of Elvis at the beginning? I like the chorus/refrain, it's fun. This okay is okay overall. 3. Little Girl in the 4th Row - Oh, well I HATE this one. Bad bad vibes. Production wise, I like it. Lyrically, no thank you, goodbye. 4. Ballad of a Useless Man - I like this one, it's fun 5. I'm Not Your Stepping Stone - This one is fine. I like it for the most part 6. There She Goes - This one is fun, I like the sound. Actually I really like this one. it's a vibe 7. All I Really Need is You - Oh, I actually love the sound of this one? 8. Get It on - This one is okay 9. Louie Go Home - Meh, not caring too much for this one 10. Take A Look At Yourself - Okay this one is really fun, I like it a lot. 11. Melody for an Unknown Girl - Oh, no thank you on the spoken word, bestie. Melody is pretty tho. Once again wishing this site had half stars cause this is the perfect 3.5 album. Okie dokie, so where the fuck do I put this? 3 or 4? Hmmm...okay so while I did actually really really enjoy some songs and will 1000% becoming back to them, thank you very much, for the most part I think this album was mostly okay/fine? I'll give it a 3, but it's a high 3. This was pretty fun at times.

It was okay. It felt like it hit on a little bit of everything popular in 60s music: psychedelica, rock, pop, folk, The Beach Boys…etc. If nothing else, the variety kept it from feeling too stale, even if I don’t particularly like any of that. Even where I found myself getting annoyed (in many places), I didn’t whole-heartedly dislike it. It’s kind of fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. 2.5

A good listen, with some nice tuneful 60s rock. Early songs especially are quite compelling, with a balance between good hooks and forceful energy typical of the best of this era. But overall, I’m not sure it feels like much more than a nice example of the genre. A good listen, but probably without the distinctive or unique qualities that might make it a more notable album.

This is a fun collection of short, catchy garage-rock/R&B tracks, featuring some nice vocal harmonies and just an occasional hint of psychedelia. Though the songs are of mixed quality, it certainly doesn’t outstay its welcome; the eleven tracks add up to barely 29 minutes in total. ‘Kicks’ and ‘Steppin’ Stone’ are the best songs, and I doubt it’s a coincidence that these are the only tracks not written by the band. ‘Ballad of a Useless Man’, ‘There She Goes’, ‘Get It On’ and ‘Take a Look at Yourself’ are the best of the rest. A decent 3 stars.

It’s a solid record and one of those that I’m glad I listened to thanks to this project. It’s not a great album in my opinion and I don’t think it was the most forward looking album even for its time (the song Kicks is annoyingly square lol) but it’s a nice snapshot of a band that was important for a short time and largely forgotten by the masses.

Solid rock pop. Liked Songs Added: I'm Not Your Stepping Stone

Quite enjoyed this, it's a fun album - nothing too serious and very 60s. Significantly better than the Monkees though, and also several Rolling Stones and Beach Boys albums from the same era.

Paul Revere would be insulted by this. 60's psychedelic/British invasion is my most hated genre so this never stood a chance of me liking it but I didn't hate it either. Stepping Stone rips.

Ok I think this is one of those albums where I check the reviews and people are like "Why is this album even here!??!" But I'd like to make a case for it - I can easily see this being someone's favorite album they've never heard until now. If you like early Stones records, you'll probably love this, and if you keep an open mind you might enjoy it more. It's punchy, and tight, and "Kicks" and "Steppin' Stone" are killer singles. I'll put this one on again, for sure. THREE STARS

Nothingburger album. Not your stepping stone is fun but that's all that's worth bringing up. 3/5

I'm not your stepping stone 2.9

Some good stuff on this one.

Never heard of this band before and I was pleasantly surprised.

Meh. High 2? Pretty awful guitar solo early on and a lot of this feels like a lesser quality rip from British bands of the time

some decent old rock

This was a decent album have heard of them never really listened but not too bad!

Nice enough

Fint album. Samme stilgenre som the Beatles.

Classic mid 60s sound

kinda corny lol

A quaint reminder of the jingly jangly sound of mid 1960’s POP/rock.

I mean, it's there ig?

moved me, slightly

I liked it to start with, just got a little bit tired of listening by the end but I enjoyed the album overall!

Has a nice sound but won’t be listening again

Wanted to like this one more than I did

Haven’t heard this one before. Solid early rock

Good stuff

Never heard of this album or artist before, but there's only one thing this album can be. 60s pop rock, baby. The most underappreciated and underrepresented genre on the list, if you can even believe that. Might as was well just bash this one out. If there's one thing I greatly appreciate about these albums, it's their brevity. Coming across one of these albums is like finding a crashed freight airplane full of drinks while wandering through a vast desert. Twenty-seven minutes. That is fucking glorious, though I'd be waggling my finger at this album's lack of substance if my throat wasn't so parched from all of the long albums I've been served lately. Yeah, it's 60s pop rock, alright, though a bunch of different genres have been floated by me while searching the Internet. Pop punk, garage rock and rock and roll, apparently. It's just pop rock, innit? The first half was shaky, but fine. My attention began to wane when I reached the second half of this album, however. These tracks really do pass you by - they're incredibly short and kind of directionless, truth be told. Still, there's some good points to this album. I enjoyed the Byrds-esque sentimentality which features on some of these songs. There's a wide sampling of styles and subject matters on this album, too. I didn't appreciate the more rock and roll-influenced tracks as much as I did this album's soft side, but none of these tracks overstayed their welcome and I, once again, salute that runtime. Overall, this was a decent listen. Book time. "Was ever any band more maligned than the Raiders?" Interesting way of opening your entry for a best-ever albums list. Their albums released during steep competition with English and American pop rock bands. Apparently they have a goofy band identity. Influenced the Who. "Pop-punk just does not get any better." Wait, why was this band maligned? There's too many questions and not enough answers with this entry. Wikipedia says this album is rare in that all five members contributed to the songwriting and that it only charted in the US, reaching no. 9 on the Billboard 200, but not making it onto the year-end charts. Like I have said countless times, I've long lost my idealism when it comes to this list, so through you go, li'l buddy. I cosign this inclusion.

this was quite random. some parts were beach boys esque, others more rock...why not!

One of the better 60’s-70’s rock bands. Good sound, good music.

The vibe is actually pretty solid.

3/11, 27%

Höjdpunkten är nog ändå Take a Look at Yourself. Definitionen av en trea?

The Youtube links kept directing me to readings of the historical event. Interesting read. Anyways music was nice!

This was quite enjoyable really, as I wasn't expecting to like it all. There was definitely more than a whiff of the late 60's US sound going on, thta made it pretty indistinct from what the Beach Boys and the Monkees were turning out.

It was ok yeah

As many people have already stated, Paul Revere & The Raiders' Midnight Ride is a pretty middle of the road 60s Rock release and if you aren't a fan of that then you are shit out of luck my friend. The main standout here happens to be the first track Kicks, and everything else follows in the same upbeat footsteps but not nearly to the same memorable degree. The songwriting and instrumentation are good, the pace of this album is good, everything here is good and not really much more. Personally I am more of a fan of these semi-whimsical 60s Garage Rock albums so I feel I probably enjoyed this more than most but not enough to have anything remarkable to say about it. It is a perfectly safe album to hear from this era with not much else to it, don't see why this is deemed as "essential listening" but whatever.

You know, the cover is kinda cool, but the album itself is so-so. It's fairly run of the mill 60s pop rock. Mostly fine, but the two slow tracks are really cheesy.

Solid album with songs I didn't know were later covered by other bands.

01) Kicks - 8,0 02) There's Always Tomorrow - 7,0 03) Little Girl in the 4th Row - 7,0 04) Ballad of a Useless Man - 6,5 05) (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone - 7,5 06) There She Goes - 7,0 07) All I Really Need Is You - 7,0 08) Get It On - 7,0 09) Louie, Go Home - 7,0 10) Take a Look at Yourself - 7,0 11) Melody For an Unknown Girl - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,09 (71/100) Current ranking: 442/819

This just sounded like generic 60s music to me. Good energy at some points, but nothing crazy that stood out to me.

One of the albums I own on vinyl as I came across it in a $1 bin, and an absolute banger like Kicks for a dollar is a steal. The other songs are fun but nowhere near Kicks' caliber

The Monkees were a Paul Revere & the Raiders tribute band it seems.

Literally all these albums sound the same. I’m begging for something different pleaseeeeee

Pretty fun old surfy sound.

I didn’t rate this actual album because it wasn’t on Tidal. I listened to a greatest hits album instead. I always thought this was kind of a cheesy band back in the day but I was surprised at how many songs I recognized that I liked. This is an exaggerated rating as a result. 3.5

Probably the most American response there could be to the “British invasion,” both in name and sound. I prefer the invaders, but will round up from 2.5*.

Better than I expected, but still not great. I had fun listening to a decent number of songs that a 3 is about the right score for this one. Doubt I’ll remember the album or ever come back to it

Every musician in the 60's was just high as hell weren't they. Good album, and Alice Cooper was totally influenced by this. Feels a bit retro now but they were just throwing things against the wall to see what stuck.

Top Track: Kicks

60’s pop. Meh

Good fun for fans of the middle-era Beatles and The Monkees. Their version of Not Your Stepping Stone goes hard, but I really don't like Girl In The 4th Row.

Paul Revere and the Raiders sound like they should be on opposing sides to me, just based upon the name. The album's fine, but I won't be rousing the troops to tell them about this one. Favorite track: "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone"

didn't know they were a legit band

I do not remember a single song on this album. That was how mediocre it was.

It's pretty standard 60s pop, not bad but it doesn't stand out at all.

While I listen to these albums, I usually ask myself why this particular album has been chosen to be included on this list. A thousand albums spread across the world, across genres, across decades, isn't that many. Reading about this album and Paul Revere and the Raiders, it seems that they had a heyday, though unlike some others of their generation, they never managed to have a continuing influence or relevance, at least that I'm aware of. Though listening to this album, I can hear the influence. Their cover of I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, originally by The Monkees, sounds to me to be more of an influence on the likes of much later groups like Minor Threat, who also covered the song, than the original. And for me, the garage-y, proto-punk elements of this album work best. I'm not sure that this album overall feels like it's essential, though if you're seeking the roots of later things (albeit music that itself came out over four decades ago...) it's an interesting listen. A fun one, too.

Not a band I'd heard before but some pretty catchy pop/rock from '66 with Kicks a standout track. The ballads not so but that probably qualifies as Americana these days. Worth a listen if you like sixties music.

Overall Rating - 3.25/5 (6.50/10). Definitely falls off after the two singles.

This was a peculiar and eccentric attempt at rock that drew inspiration from pre-psychedelic or country genres.

Not very interesting, nothing really bad but just not attention grabbing. The bonus tracks on the end of the version I listened to were the most interesting which tells you all you need to know. 2.7/5

The Good: Who doesn’t like a midnight ride? The Bad: Finding out the ride is in a two-seater… The Ugly: Paul brought along the Raiders… no space left… What? Yes! So, I’ve listened to this album a couple of times over the past weeks, and I have to say that it starts comforting you after a while. Comfort, that’s a good thing… right? Just like the midnight ride being a good thing… I guess. Anyway, if I have to listen to that era kind of rock, or pop, or whatever the cool kids might have called that back in the day, then I am okay with this. Just not certain if I want to dish out 4*...

Some fun tracks but a lot that just felt a tad corny

I’m not sure what I expected but it wasn’t this. A bit dated but some good songs.

Some good tracks but also some generic merseybeat in there

Fairly basic 60's rock and roll. Singer's voice sounds more modern than a lot of singers from the era sound. Standout is simple but catchy original "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone". Dud is "SS 396" which sounds like a lame Beach Boys rip-off.

am i high or do i just fuck with this?

Laatst The Electric Prunes en The Sonics, eerder The Pretty Things, Flamin' Groovies en The Yardbirds. Allemaal bands zonder eigen straat in Almere Muziekwijk.

The himbo of albums… fun but lacks substance

So far off to a good start. I have a feeling these guys got more ass than a toilet seat in their day. Liked it more than I thought I would, a couple goofy songs but I liked the jangly guitars. Would give this another listen, 3.8 stars.

Nice garage rock. From‘66. With a psychedelic touch 😎

Their fifth album. Pop Rock / Rock. A safe, middle of the road, 60s Pop Rock album. Some nice sounds and songs. Kicks and I'm Not Your Stepping Stone being the best tracks.

its okay i liked the start but close to the end it was all meh but ill listen again and give a better review.

Found this to be very generic 60s pop, Beatles-esque in places with a few flourishes of psychedelia, blues and even country here and there there to differentiate it but in the end it was pretty forgettable.

The British are coming! The British are coming! Just how did the American music scene respond to the British Invasion? Judging by this 1966 album, the answer was to wear revolutionary era uniforms and produce a lot of songs that sounded suspiciously like the Merseybeat sound of three years previously, by which time the Beatles had already moved on to more mystical and drug influenced pastures. Aside from a couple of cringeworthy and borderline creepy love songs (Little Girl in the 4th Row and Melody for an Unknown Girl) this album improves a lot when they stop trying so much to sound like they’re from Liverpool and throw in a bit of west coast garage rock and R&B. Their best known song on this is probably I’m Not Your Stepping Stone (later covered by bands as diverse as the Monkees and the Sex Pistols). Another highlight amongst the bonus tracks on this release is a bit of bouncy surf guitar called SS-396 which fortunately turns out to be about a sports car and not the other sort of SS (always wise to check these days). Tricorn-hat-tastic!

60s’ rock is just 60s’ rock. It’s pretty hard for me to find anything from that time period interesting. Even when they try to do something different (and technically the variety on this album is not bad at all), it still ends up sounding samey, for some reason. This album is the same. I enjoyed it a little bit, but there’s literally nothing special about it. I’m probably overrating this album because it’s short and I didn’t have time to get tired of it. If it were slightly longer, I would’ve probably deducted a point.

Pumped up kicks getting harder to find 👟👟

(61/100)

Interesting sound, feels very familiar of other sounds during this era

It's been 12 days since I've gotten an album I haven't listened to before so honestly I don't even care if this is good or not I'm just happy to get something new! This is the type of album that does absolutely nothing new but is still pretty good. It sounds exactly like any other 60s psychedelic band but its good enough for me to keep listening to. Like I said, I'm just happy to discover something new (even if it doesn't sound new). Favorite track: I'm Not Your Stepping Stone

5.5/10 At time of writing, not only does this album have a perfect 3,00 stars it's also the third most uncontroversial album on the site. I can see why that is. Sixty years after its released it has become an unremarkable album. Highlights: I'm Not Your Stepping Stone Take a Look at Yourself

Starts off with a great track in Kicks but the album never really lives up to the levels of that track. Quite enjoyed their sound, some good songs and overall a decent enough record.

Decent old rock and roll album.

didn't hate this, i just love a 60's boyband man. saved: kickss, there's always tomorrow, ballad of a useless man, i'm not your stepping stone, there she goes, melody of an unknown girl.

I was literally falling asleep but I think it was rad. (Edit: I was falling asleep, it was ok.)

nice rock n roll from yesteryear

First song - KICKS - was really fucking good. Rest of the album was a bit average. Shame. It got off to a good start but then went down - so average score.

Don't know much about this band, but they sound like an American band trying to sound like a band from the UK about a year too late. By 1966, however, they are already behind the curve. I wonder if they made it.

Standard 60s sort of garage rock with a Revolutionary War schtick. Good, but nothing actually revolutionary.

Vibe Beatles

Very forgettable

Good album from a classic Rock & Roll band.

Quite a modest album that passes you right by without evoking much emotions at all. Feels like a mix between The Beatles and The Doors, but just not particularly interesting to me somehow. No real tracks that stood out, and the organ kept annoying me greatly. Think I’ve come to the realization that the 60s just isn’t an era for music that I enjoy particularly much.

I only have heard “I’m not your stepping stone” before and that is because my dad insisted that the The Hives song “Two Timing-touch and broken bones” is a ripoff of that song. The album delivers your typical 60s psychedelic rock. Maybe not the most essential album but if you want psychedelia that this is is a good album. Favourite song was “Kicks”. Strong 3.

𝘔𝘪𝘥𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘙𝘪𝘥𝘦 is a fun snapshot of mid-60s American rock, full of punchy riffs and clean, confident playing. The Raiders have a strong sense of pop instinct, and the record moves easily between garage-leaning energy and more polished, radio-ready hooks. Still, as enjoyable as it is, the album doesn’t always push beyond the era’s familiar formulas. The charm is there, but the songwriting doesn’t quite hit the level of the British bands they were often compared to. A solid, lively record — just not a transformative one.

I enjoyed this! A lot of really interesting ideas that didn't quite get put together right but still kept me entertained. Would've been a 4 but the lyrics were a bit cack

This are some of the most poppy emo lyrics I've ever heard. It's not something I've really thought about before, but I guess sad boy songs have always been a thing. Anyway, the songs are musically interesting and I like the vocalist's tone, but the lyrics started wearing me down after a while. Not a bad album at all, just not for me. Also my eyes started rolling into the back of my head during Melody for an Unknown Girl.

This is an enjoyable enough slice of 60s rock and roll, but not something that inspires much of a reaction in me one way or the other. I wouldn't turn off the radio if one of these songs came on is probably the most generous compliment I can give it.

Think I could have survived without hearing this. All ok just nothing special. Not sure why it’s in this list.

2.6 2x airport on way to LAS

Very good

Bet it was amazing when it first came out.

This group sounds like a mish-mash of all the other bands from this time. I hear Beatles, Beach Boys, and everywhere in between. I recognize Stepping Stone. This is a fun jam.
