Nice sound. A lot of the songs sounded the same but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I don’t think any album, with the exception of Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, that better demonstrates the power of the ‘00 Indie movement than this one. It’s honestly a master piece and I can’t even tell you why except every song on here is so incredibly listenable. The energy and it emotes passion in ways most artists wish they could achieve. Key songs for me are Last Nite as it was the first song I heard from his album and therefore has a special place, and Hard to Explain. This is a modern classic (…note: for Gen Xers the ‘90s was like ten years ago so this by definition would be ‘modern’).

This is the international release. The album and song choices are different for the international release (ass cover) versus the US release (subatomic particles). I never knew this before today. Anyway, I remember when The Strokes saved rock n roll in the early 2000s. I kinda forgot this was in the shadow of 9/11. I wonder if they would have been a bigger success without having the specter of 9/11 hanging over everything NYC at that time. I own this album on CD and I find it similar today as I did then. The songs are good and it is a pleasurable listening experience but I don't get all emotional or pumped up much for any single song. Honestly, the lyrics don't hit me at all. I'm not sure I've ever tried to listen closely. The voice is just another instrument to me. Anyway, I do see the legacy connection between this and the Velvet Underground. Still a good listen. Not quite a classic.

Perfection! Just an amazing debut record that set off a rock resurgence in NYC and around the world. Opened my eyes to indie rock with one ear towards the future and one checking out the past and all the great bands doing it before them! Easy 5

in 2014 i played guitar in one practice session for a band consisting of a drummer who insisted we sound exactly like this album and his roommate who documented everything in case we got famous 8/10

This is an amazing album. When it came out 18 year old me had never heard anything like it. The sound is distinctly theirs, but still clearly influenced be older bands. Every tracks seems to be one idea distilled down to the essence. There's no overly long tracks, or 10 minute solos, everything is just sharp and perfectly paced.

Every fucking song! Not a single miss. Where’s the stinker. You’re wrong, there are none. Fuck you! This is great. I love it. It’s fun, every song stands out from one another while also sounding like one cohesive album. The instrumentation is great, but not so perfect to the point that it sounds soulless. The vocals are iconic and unique. Original songwriting. This feels new and fresh any and every time I listen to it. There is nothing like this. Great album. One of my all time favorites. 5/5

Pretty much a perfect album, even if I know know it to be a bit derivative of Television. I didn't know who Television were when I was a teenager though, so these guys were pretty much the epitome of cool in my book at the time. I think they do put enough of an original spin on their sound to be considered unique as well. Not a bad song on here, one of the best albums of the millennium so far.

Amazing album - 10/10 love it

As my cursor hovers over 4 stars, I have to ask myself how can I deny an album that launched (and defined) a scene. That made New York cool again. Nothing groundbreaking, just tight, catchy, confident rock.

The Stroke‘s were always my brother‘s territory. I felt strongly as a teen that they were a pop version of a real rock and roll band. But I have to admit now, this album totally slaps.

Hard to beat “Last Night” and “Someday” as classics in the jangle punk genre. When I think ‘I do like the Strokes’, I now believe myself to be saying hat I like those songs. The rest of the album, to quote Osama, let me drift off, disinterested. But in the rock world, 2 out of 11 will get you 3 out of 5

Classic early 2000s New York album. You can almost trace a direct line back 30 years to the stooges. At times sounded a bit like vampire weekend to me as well. Don’t listen to this often but when it’s on I enjoy it.

Not particularly familiar with The Strokes, but definitely recognise the album art, that shit is iconic. Honestly though, I had high hopes for this one, especially since it's so critically acclaimed; but it wasn't all that grand. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it felt pretty flavourless and lacking in depth. I'm sure there's some British Indie freak out there who thinks this is the best thing since sliced bread, but honestly this really doesn't do that for me and I can't see myself coming back to any of the songs on this record in a massive hurry.

You will catch me Stroking my shit before you EVER catch me Throbbing my Gristle. This one feels pretty overrated given its global score, I enjoyed it quite a bit but can't really see it at some post-punk, Y2K era masterwork. This feels like something I have spent a solid amount of my life witnessing in the background, usually plastered onto the TV in the waiting area of a Hairdressers or on the idle screens of some Bowling Alley, likely being put on from VH1/MTV/Rage I like the distorted, garage style sound they have going here. Though the way they describe the creative process behind this sound does sound a bit hokey, it works for me. Highlights: Trying Your Luck, Alone Together, Hard to Explain

The peak of “songs I’ve heard before somewhere else but don’t know the name”. An album of very groovy, poppy rock music. I like it, but there’s not many I’d be tearing to go back to. Famous for having an album cover you could have a pull to, except in the US where it was decided the general populace were too scared of pussy.

Look indie-rock ain't my thing but I can see why this album is on this list. The sound this album produces is something i feel like a lot artist would try to make themselves on their own albums and songs. I liked it but I wouldn't go out of my way for this again. 3/5.

Inoffensive, competently-produced music. Multiple listens did not leave an impression on me, unfortunately in this case the album cover was the most memorable thing here. It's fine as background noise but overall I think this is just mid.

Oh, Is This It? Yes, Julian, this is indeed it: the lowest bar for creativity. The Strokes manage to sound like every indie band you’ve ever heard, except somehow more bored. Every song feels like Julian Casablancas is singing while scrolling his phone, detached and uninterested in what he’s actually saying. It’s painfully clear they’re trying to be “cool,” but they end up sounding like they’re singing about the hardships of being slightly inconvenienced by their trust funds. I would rather listen to hold music than go through this again.

All the songs blended together into a just okay smoothie, although there was still some small chunks of unique sounding songs in that smoothie that were pretty good.

If I had to judge an album by it's cover, the first thing I thought of was Spinal Taps, "Smell the Glove" That being said, the album itself was pretty good. The vocalist definitely feels like the weakest link, but it does work great on certain songs. (Last Nite) for example. I don't know that I will return to the album, but I definitely wouldn't mind if someone else put it on, so I think that leaves me with a 3

Something I’ll always appreciate with The Strokes, their instrumentation it’s always a foot tapper. Something too complicated but always puts your in a fancy kind of mood. Something I can never appreciate with The Strokes, the singer. I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s good that he’s more hidden behind the music because of how much I like the guitar and bass, but his melody and words don’t vibe with me. Interesting enough, I think you can pick any song from this album and find it enjoyable. It’s an interesting listen to and I very much enjoyed my time with it. The deeper I get into the album, the more I absolutely love the sound. I was even vibing with the singer and the energy he brought to the sound. Such a vibe. Upbeat and fun all the way through. Honestly maybe as close to a 5 you can get without it actually being a 5. But 100% an album I’ll come back to. 4/5

I really like the strokes. I began listening to them when their 2nd album came out and I loved it. Time never got me back to really listening to the first. After listening to this album, it’s great, but you never forget your first. I really like this and get why The Killers were asked to change their sound because they sounded too much like the strokes…they are similar. Thanks god they did, because we got two great groups and many more albums.

La sensación es la de estar caminando por tu querida ciudad a las 7 de la tarde, olorosa y con ruido, destapandote una cerveza bien barata y manija porque estás yendo a ver a una banda under con tu grupo de amigos, y quizás tuviste un día de mierda y descubriste que tu novia te está cagando y no tenés laburo pero bueno, a fin de cuentas te queda la música y tus amigos.

Groupe connu de nom. Je suis passé à côté lors de sa sortie. Les morceaux sont courts et très entrainants, avec une basse bien en avant, mais un traitement de voix particulier qui donne un son étouffé (on s'habitue ...). J'ai particulièrement apprécié : "Is This It" (ligne de basse) "Alone, Together" (riff+chorus guitare) "Take It or Leave It" (harmonies, mariage entre basse et guitares). Donc une bonne découverte ! Je vais l'intégrer à ma collection. =>4/5

One of the few quintessential rock albums to come out in my lifetime. This album is rock and roll to its core. Raw and dirty, fun and catchy. Every song is a banger. They may not have been incredibly talented, but they do what they do perfectly.

Hard for me to be unbiased on this one, because I was a big Strokes fan back in the 2000s. I had listened to this album back then and loved it, but now I get to hear it with fresh ears. Honestly- its good and I enjoy it, but it doesn't hit as hard as it had once before. The songs themselves are good, but the subject matter falls a little flat for me (break up, seeing your ex, and pining for someone who doesnt want you- i felt this much more in my early 20s) Still- there are some amazing hits on this album. I love the guitar work most of all- strong and catchy without being overbearing. Overall- bring me back to my youth and I really enjoy it. Id say as a more mature listener, probably a 3.5/5, but my experience with my album and occasional relisten brings it up to a 4

This is an album that brought back memories of college for me. It was played a lot back then in dorms and apartments. I think it is a solid album. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. I don’t give it a higher score just because there are some songs on the album in my opinion that are just okay and not super amazing. The two biggest hits do help my overall score to be higher than say 3. It’s a great album if you are in the mood for its 60’s type rock sound.

None of the tracks really caught my attention. The music for what it is was fine, but in no way fantastic. I feel like I hear this sound but more refined in other later bands, so in that sense it's probably an important album - just not a great one for me. I can't sing a line from a single track on here today 1 day later, and in a few days you could probably play one of the tracks for me and ask me if I know it and I'd say I'd never heard it before. Standouts - 3/5

''Alone, Together'' is very cool :) ''Last Nite'' is, once again, very cool :) ''Hard to Explain'' is the weakest song in the album so far. ''New York City Cops'' is a good song. ''Trying Your Luck'' is cool. ''Take It or Leave It'' is probably either the best song or the second best after Barely Legal.

The New York group quickly rose to prominence and gave way to the indie music revolution. It was a return to the fundamentals and the basics of what made rejecting main stream so cool. The strokes were able to make amazing melodies with fairly simple progressions and that in itself is what lens does band its signature sound.

if u saw the two star rating i inexplicably had on this from when i was 18 or so, no u didnt. the slowly dawning realization that this is probably one of the best albums ive rolled yet was not pretty. rly just inimitable songcraft delivering emotions deeply felt but struggled to be projected. in places , as elemental as something like the velvet underground, but never compromising on its nonstop melodic sensibility. kind of autistic honestly. feel very stupid that i just bounced off this years ago and havent spent the time inbetween getting super attached to this thing! will make up for lost time eventually, i am periodically slowly revisiting my new faves from this project...they can pop up in the most unexpected places

A classic

Classic early 2000s rock. A good album if you're in the mood for that.

I can't bring myself to not give this 5 stars.

For whatever reason, a lot of my friends got really captivated by this album. Maybe it's the faster pace and catchy lyrics. Maybe it's the gravely voice and the way the singer pushes himself. Maybe it's the fact that this sounds like the blueprint that much pop indie music would sound like. This thing is great. I was a big fan of cage the elephant in high school and a lot of their earlier work reminds me of this. Over time it's grown on me quite a lot. I think that this album is pretty quintessential with the type of people I like. It's pretty cool in that way.

Think they were in the right place/right time with a certain fashion style, "CBGB sound", anemoia of certain young boomers/GenXers bummed about missing "real punk", and certain young millennials looking for something "edgier" than Backstreet Boys (but not too edgy). Contrast the sound/look/crowd of this "4 car garage rock" (and the similar bands that followed) vs. nu metal or rap. So are The Strokes poseurs? 1970s CBGB cosplay? I'd say so, but they got some fun songs. Everyone has heard "Last Nite"...right? Also, lol at one of their songs being censored due to 9/11. 🦅🗽

This album is a product of a feeling that desperately needed to return to rock music at the time. It's a fun album, it's a party album, it's a simple album, all of which were things lacking at the time. I'm not even sure I liked it that much when it came out; sure I enjoyed "Last Night" like everyone else that owned a television or a radio, but that might've been it. I probably thought these guys were pretty lame. Since then I've become less of a teenager and more of an old man and hopefully less quick to judge. The Strokes sound like the Strokes and that's what's great about them. They pick a style (little to no effects, minimalist recording, 1 or 2 tempos, etc) and they do it perfectly. I don't really even care what they're singing about, it's a good time and it makes you want to smile. I don't know if I can pick too many tracks out of this album to single out as wanting to listen to over and over, because they're all pretty similar, and in a way that's a good thing. That's surprising to me because I usually dislike that kind of thing in an album. The only thing I can hate on is that this album spawned absolute shit like Franz Ferdinand and the Killers, who are so full of themselves musically that they lose the whole spirit of this style. Otherwise it's great. Also lmao that America got an alternate cover.

I had this album and don't remember the cover being so sexy. I like the sound of this album. Nice easy early 2k indie rock. The muffled, perhaps untouched vocals are a hallmark of these guys sound and it works for me. My teachers, they don't understand.

Okay. Unremarkable.

The debut album of the legendary Garage Rock and Indie Rock band The Strokes which since its release has become an classic in many peoples eyes does feature a sound that isn't really found anywhere else and it's without a doubt a special one. I am personally just not a big fan of the Strokes in general. They aren't bad but I feel that many people rate them much higher than what they would actually deserve. Again, they aren't bad but to me their music sound average and often uninspired and bland. The album opens on its title track. 'Is This It' stands out with a more Slacker Rock approach with the lofi sound and the raw guitar sounds as well as some interesting additions in the more detailed production. It's less "basic" than most of the album and therefore introduces the album in a whole other way than you'd expect. I do like the song a lot in term of structure but right of the bat, I don't like the vocals very much, the feel ripped off of other artists but I will talk about that later when it's even more obvious. The song is okay, it's enjoyable to an extend but doesn't go too much out of its way for itself. 'The Modern Age' now introduces the sound that most of the album is known for. It's energetic, raw and very much alternative rock at its finest, at least sonically. The execution and delivery is really not that great and the songwriting is simply too basic for this style of music. It's just a bland and boring amalgamation of some raw and slightly noisy ideas and sounds that don't really do anything. I'm just repeating myself but 'Soma' is another basic and boring song that has pretty much no redeeming quality. It sounds all the same and doesn't go anywhere with the way it builds up. The highlight, no worthy tension build up, no emotional lyrics and no interesting moments. I do think that it's slightly better than its predecessor but not by much. I do think that 'Barely Legal' is a slight step-up in terms of songwriting, the chorus is much better and works for once but the whole song around it is again not that interesting. But the for once pretty well performed hook is enough to make the song at least okay and slightly above average. 'Someday' is actually a pretty good song with more melodic approach and the Jangle Pop inspired sound at a couple moments. But I also want to mention what I meant with "ripped off" vocals. It's very obvious on this track that the style in which he sings is just Iggy Pop all over again and the sound of the music itself is also very much ripped off of the Stooges, Iggy's band. There isn't anything original about it, they just copied the bands they liked when they were younger without making "own" music or adding anything new to the music cannon. The only thing they really did was add some Indie to this sound but that's it. That said, this song is quite okay but again, nothing crazy. The albums second half starts with 'Alone, Together' which is another Iggy Pop rip off. But this time it works even less. The song isn't bad but it definitely isn't good by any means. It's basic and bland with the only redeeming quality being the vocals in the chorus and a few moments in the build up towards that chorus. It just ends up being a very basic song overall. 'Last Nite' doesn't just feel like a sonic copy but it feels like an actual Stooges cover song which definitely isn't an easy task I do think that this makes it the albums best song (meaning that it's good but not great) because making a song that feels so much like a cover without being one isn't an easy task. Funnily enough, 'Hard to Explain' breaks the chain of the pure Garage Rock with some synthy New Wave additions into the sound. It's not really a great addition but it's okay, it doesn't make the song worse mainly because the song itself is another straight up boring song that just makes you feel very tired after only a few moments. It's not "bad" but it's way to basic and bland to be anything above average, in fact, this might be slightly below it. The first song that I'd actually call "bad" is 'New York City Cops'. It tries to be a little silly and Punk but it ends up being just annoying the moment it starts. It's far from terrible, mainly because the pre-chorus is quite nice but the actual chorus just absolutely f-s it up. The song's bad, that's it. 'Trying Your Luck' isn't much better, in fact, it's just as bad. It's annoying, bland, uninspired and has nothing that would give it any redeeming quality. It feels streched for half of the playtime and the song is just a little over 3 minutes long. It sounds bad and it is. The album closes with 'Take It or Leave It' which is a step-up from the previous songs but still isn't really my thing. It's not catchy at all and feels way too basic for the amount of energy they put into this. They just cannot perform or deliver these songs good enough for me to enjoy them. I remember I used to love this album, time has definitely changed that. Several songs have the same tempo and its easy to feel like they kinda melt together. Or some songs have a great verse, but then a weird bridge kicks in. Modern Age is still great! But I'm happy to move on from this one.

Banger, great debut

So I kinda hated this band when this album was released because it sounded like rock for hipsters who don’t actually like rock. Coming in 23 years later… can’t say I feel much differently. Rich kids cosplaying as street urchins and buying their way into a career as rock stars on the strength of the Elite Modeling Agency fortune. I mean, I get it. Nu-Metal was getting pretty stale and these guys were different than that. I am forever grateful that this was nearing the end of music trends being dictated by terrestrial radio and major labels.

For some reason, and I mean this from an almost harsh point of view, I have always been a big fan of The Strokes. I don't think they are musical geniuses, I do not think they are crushing people emotionally, they are, in a way, not really all that special. But there you go. It is something that is infectious about them that makes it so, like I did yesterday, listen to thiis album, and then a couple of more hours more of them. Sometimes a band comes along, and like a movie you love but you "know" isn't very good on the big scale, I just really like this band.

Best song on the album was Last Nite. Never listen to The Strokes before, I have heard of them. The album was okay, a bit meh but a couple of tracks I may listen to again.

I think the strokes are a one album wonder and this is the album. Lot of the songs define its time period and they have aged well.

I’m not one song recognised. Not really an album I personally would rush back to but maybe one that needs a little more time on rotation for me to enjoy.

The first half of the album didn't work for me, but as the soundscape expanded into the second half i enjoyed the music substantially more. The distorted, band passed vocal, (possibly a broken speaker cone?) was quite grating early on. But as the music became more harmonic and the rhythms more interesting I think it was able to fit the balance a little more nicely.

Memorable album cover but somehow I don’t think I have ever listened to any of their stuff before. I am a fan of some of the artists who have been inspired by this jaunty, narrative style of indie rock. After a listen to a few more tracks by The Strokes I did a bit of a revisit of some of my favourite Arctic Monkeys albums. There’s something about a UK take on this sound that I prefer but that being said there are tracks on this album I will come back to.

as someone who spent their formative teen years listening to indie/alt rock, it’s hard for me to hate this. only complaint is that it sounded the sameee like let’s switch it uppp 8/10

I wasn't into this at the time, I thought it was all a bit too trendy. Now with the passage of time, I can listen to this many times and appreciate how good it is. It is the perfect length for an album, each song has merits, and there is hardly any filler in this album. Love it

Done this one haven't I? Oh well, it's a great record. Well worthy of the hype and title of easily one of the greatest debuts of all time. Probably matched by the disappointment of nearly everything that followed it, aside from the odd banger. Is it fair to say that Television (who they sound a lot like) only had one brilliant album also. Can't be arsed writing much but everyone already knows this is a great album and so do I.

Guess it's got that velvet underground and 70s punk influence but I found it lacked the edge and experimentation compared to those earlier groups Production bit too clean for its own good as well and the songs just didn't really interest me

When this album hits it really hits. Doing the early aughts proud. The deep cuts aren't amazing, though. I didn't find the full album particularly revelatory.

I’ve heard a lot about this album, and this was my first time listening to it (although I’d heard “Someday” without realizing it was by The Strokes; in a similar vein, I somehow never made the connection that “Reptilia,” a song I love, was by them). It didn’t disappoint - I enjoyed it a lot, and it felt somehow nostalgic. Definitely something I’d put on again! I listened through twice, and then again a few days later.

An absolute pillar of modern indie music. They wear their influences on their sleeves while tearing them from flexing their musical muscles. An absolute banger from front to back.

Such a good album! Literally no filler tracks

This is a good listen. They clearly have skills and know what they're doing putting together hit songs that aren't just earworms. I don't think I'd hunt it out myself but I wouldn't hate it if I was somewhere and this was playing.

It has a decent energy, but it all sounds kind of the same. The singles are catchy. Not a fan of the vocal mixing choice. This is a 2.5.

Can’t complain, album was actually pretty good. Good vibes. Ended up liking quite a few and can see myself coming back.

Solid. Has a couple really catch tunes but also a bit of filler. Like it don’t love it.

I don't understand why people like the Strokes so much. Seen them live and didn't dig it then either.

A couple of big hits and nine strong standards. Simple base lines and drum beats build a solid foundation, slinging guitar riffs and gritty vocals layered over make for a good combination and impressive debut album. Is This It? I’m saying it is. Rates (3.7*s)

The Strokes helped shape the sound of the early 2000's with this debut and it will always bring me right back to that time. It feels a little young now but it holds up well enough. They have a simple formula but it works, pretty solid track list, slightly vintage feel on the distortion. They were in the right place at the right time with this one.

Like Franz Ferdinands debut...another stellar indie rocker. It's hard not to like them with their simple, catchy tunes. Julian Casablancas is not to be brushed aside as cookie cutter. I want to think he is just a spoiled rich kid whose Daddy paid his way to stardom all the while knee deep in Elite Model Management poon. But no...with other projects like The Voidz...dude is a stud. And Albert Hammond Jr is also top notch. I never gave them much thought when The Strokes came out but the more I listen to them, the more I'm in. Great debut...3.7.

The Strokes figured something out right out of the gate with Is This It. There is a certain simplicity in their tracks that consistently works without any unnecessary flair. Something about their sound keeps it from aging as none of their hits have "aged". Is This It sounds like it could have been released in 2024 and been just as successful. This album was a regular play in my teenage years and still holds up today. Solid to great from front to back. You really can't go wrong with any tracks on this album. Julian Casablancas is one of those artists where everything he touches is worth a listen. 4.27 stars

Totally revolutionary at the time. After a long period where rock had got bloated and pop was top of the world, long hair and leather jackets were BACK. Fond memories certainly, but perhaps not quite as revolutionary as it seemed at the time.

The Strokes are a timeless band. Everyone knows at least one song. Their sound is distinct and familiar. My only qualm is that every song kind of sounds the same! But I could listen to them all day long.

It felt a little repetitive after a while but it is an overall solid album.

The Strokes are quite an understated band. I like their stuff.

Brilliant

It's not something I want to listen to all the time, but I like it in general. Someday especially I think works pretty well. I do think When It Started is musically better than New York City Cops, and works well in the album, even if I think a sudden news event causing a change in a piece of art is usually worse for the work. And 9/11 especially caused a LOT of changes in popular art that was largely created in the previous year or two.

I missed this album at the time - I think there must have been other stuff going on in September of 2001. First impressions are of a Britpop band trying to sound American. Second impressions came during the track New York City cops (understandably dropped from later re-releases) when it turned out to be an American band doing Britpop about five years late. Not bad though, with some Stooges style vibes. Minus points for a truly awful album cover though.

Isn't it the worst out of the naughties? I really disliked this pseudo-garage rock revival at that time, and it didn't age well either. It sill a music performed by a bunch of poseurs who painfuly recycle old ideas while being nonchalant to pass for the coolest kids in town.

this is probably one of the best debut albums of all time, there are no bad songs at all, this is like perfect it’s such an enjoyable listen

I often say that I feel like the 60s through the 90s have signature sounds, but the 2000s and 2010s are just kind of mush, but this album has proven me wrong. The mid 2000s absolutely have a sound, and it’s this. There are about a dozen bands that sound just like this, but I guess you’d say the strokes were the torch-bearers. I don’t know what you call the sound, or if they were the best at it, but they, and this album, are a time capsule to the mid-2000s.

I love Julian Casablancas’ voice. I know there has been some kickback on the Strokes being nepo babies, but honestly at the end of the day it does come down to if the music is good, and in my opinion it sure is. I like the vocal processing they play around with and I think there are some fun bass parts in here.

Must-listen for those who are big on alternative/indie rock...

i've always thought i don't like the strokes... and now i can see that that's unfortunately true. they just don't work for me sadly even though there's nothing i theoretically object to i just don't like it. someday is my fave song i think. 3

I got into The Strokes early (bought their first EP when it came out, I was there etc), can't emphasize how exciting they were at the time after YEARS of britpop bilge. All the best tracks were on the EP but this still excites in places, although maybe my older head feels like it never really progresses beyond it's clear influences

I'd have given this a much lower rating 10 years ago.

Listened to it sat at a tram stop and barely noticed it even though the tram was 20 minutes late.

I was never a huge Strokes fan but this album is solid and I can't separate the nostalgia feelings of that sound

Very nostalgic with a few real bangers. Surprisingly close to 5 stars.

The album was great. I started off thinking, oh wow another alt/indie/garage band, and was pleasantly surprised with how unique they sounded. The songs are punchy, memorable, and fun. Probably as good as indie alt gets for me.

The fact that this was one of the best albums of the early 2000's says a lot more about that decade for music than it does about this album!!! It was fine though, I enjoyed it enough.

Yeah, this is it! Overwhelming, confident, and intense.

Although I really like a couple of the tracks on this album it does float around the edge of 4/5 for me. I'm still not sure which it is, and that's enough to keep it at 4. The sound of the album is great, I admire the effects used to stylise the vocals and the guitar work is deceptively simple. But the only tracks I really see myself coming back to are the bigger hits.

Not my kind of music.

I WAS SURPRISED. I have owned this album for a long time and never made it past the first or second track - to be clear, I do think the first song is a banger! I don't know why I wrote them off. But it's a good one. Full listen, lots of hooks, lots of melody.

Highlights: Someday, Last Night, Alone Together, New York City Cops. In a nutshell: a band who revived garage rock in the 2000’s. The Strokes have an indescribable pull to them. They borrow from Iggy and the Stooges, Ramones, etc. There are some recycled riffs. I still prefer Franz Ferdinand but no love is lost for the band who crafted the sound first. Overall: 6/10

One of, if not the best, indie album ever. Inspired all my favourite bands and soundtracked my teenage years. Love this album more than some distant family members. Forever grateful to you, Julian Casablancas xx

Decent, but listening to the album a lot of it sounds very samey and seemed to blend into each other.

a quintessential indie album. i always hear people talk about how this is the best strokes album and they’ve spent their whole career trying to replicate it. maybe it’s because we’re twenty years removed from it, but this is not the best strokes album. it’s still great, and massively influential for the indie scene at the time but they have definitely put out better music over the length of their career. this is a great album worth listening to, even if i think it’s overrated.

Are The Strokes kinda overrated? Sure. Is this still a near flawless piece of aughts indie rock? Also yes. You’ve gotta respect it.

Definitely a quintessential garage rock album from the early 2000s

Even The Strokes being the #1 band of skinny boys wearing skinny pants and suits, I listened to so many better indie rock bands (like Muse) that I can't stand their washed-out/drink-for songs. "Last Nite" is a fun song; no one can deny it, but it's just fun. Or I am black and can't stand this epitome of whiteness.

It’s very good, smooth, clear, cool rock ‘n’ roll…but it’s just a little bit dull. Evan with multiple listens, nothing to complain about, quite enjoyable, and the best tracks are pretty fun, but nothing stands out as particularly memorable.

A very solid outing

Another insta-5. One of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands. Just the right amount of pop-y. Top five for me are: Is This It, The Modern Age, Someday, Last Night, and Hard to Explain but there's not a single bad track on this album. You could argue that basically all of the less popular ones are underrated.

I know the album is good when I open it up and all but 3 of the songs are already in my liked songs.

Sometimes white bread - properly baked, without a load of additives - is what hits the spot rather than all the sourdoughs and rye in the world. And sometimes a bunch of lads playing catchy indie guitar tracks...they didn't take over the world, but they did make one great album and Is This It? It is.

Already 1000000/10 i fucking love this album and have probably listened to this more than any album ever in my life so.....

Is This It tiene que ser uno de los trabajos más importante en lo que al Indie Rock se trata. Una verdadera piedra angular para el género. Hoy en día no es difícil reconocer su sonido en muchas bandas de los 2000' y ello no es coincidencia, puesto que su influencia es discutida hasta el día de hoy. Este LP cuenta con una composición que no brilla por su complejidad, pero que gracias a la gran voz de Casablancas y la armónica ejecución del resto de la banda te mantiene atrapado en todo momento. Mi único pero sería que no se trata especialmente de uno de mis géneros favoritos, por lo cual realmente no disfrute al máximo esta experiencia y hasta me hizo considerar que algunas canciones suenan muy parecidas unas a otras. Everything about this is great. I've had it on rotation for over 2 decades. It's a perfect record.

Very overrated band, this album has a lot of what sounds like pretty much the same song repeated. Whenever it sounds like they might shake things up even a little bit it quickly devolves back into their basic work yet again. Pair that with the horrendous filter over the singer's voice and the repetition within each song and you have the perfect recipe for a 1 star album.

It's okay. Good music but it doesn't catch me. Most likely because I've heard songs like it already. Maybe those songs were influenced by this album but I heard those first.

A unique sound that had a massive impact on the next decades of music(a lot of which fails to improve on the strokes first album). The release complications with 9/11 are another interesting anecdote that pins this album to a place and time. It’s nostalgic for me personally but trying to be objective, I think it’s an impactful album worth its inclusion in the list. 4/5

Is it just me or did every song sound eerily similar?

I liked it, but in a “middle of the road” sorta way. Nothing stood out and blew me away, considering its indie cred status. The original UK album cover, too risqué for us pearl-clutching Americans, was absolute genius.

Always liked the Hits from this record…and now I know which came 1st, the Killers or the Strokes? Easy to remember now, a stroke can kill you. I like this album, if I was younger when this came out I’d be a hardcore fan. Is this it? Could’ve been.

what a great consistent sound and vision. The album has gotten better over time, I initially was not in love with its overt pop sound but it has such an simple approach with excellent guitar work I came around and now find it amazing in its beauty.

Boring indie that sounds like every sitcom intro. Can see how it was influntial, but not necessarily in a good way.

This record is calculated ennui and curated New York guitar rock sounds bound together by more hooks and artful feints than I gave it credit for when it arrived, dismissing it as cynical homage. It is, but cynicism comes with regret and romanticism, and I swear they cornered the market that year in wistful chord changes and references to looking back - even their most riotous song calls to “Last Night”. 24 years after 1977’s “no future” comes “is this it?” and almost the same stretch later - Christ - I find myself closer to the latter than the former. Accidentally elegiac?

Oh boy - fueled by UK press hype more intense even than for Oasis, tantalizingly described as the second coming of Television, I fired up the ol'Kazaa (hooray!) and ripped this, listened to it once, and sadly agreed with its title. Has not improved with age, wtf are those vocals and that "bass guitar"? If you can't play, at least try to play something interesting! Fucking trust fund posers. Side note - at that point had anyone in the UK press even heard Television?!

First album, thought that a lot of it was very familiar like I've heard it before but I most definitely have not. I really liked Someday, Last Nite, NYC Cops, and Take It or Leave It(at least the take it or leave it parts). I don't know if I should really put more but yeah, this was definitely an early 2000's indie(?) album.
