Minimalist, young person energy driven punk-ish album. On top of that are such delicious basslines. This is quite hot.

I'm biased towards this kind of music so I had to rate it high regardless of how good it actually is <3 favorite tracks are Soma and someday

Awesome album. When they came on the scene they were huge. They were in the same sentences with The Beatles. No stinkers on this album.

One of my favourite groups, and this, their first album paves the way for another 5 excellent albums. I like their sound, listened to the album in full with no skips, every track was listenable, some better than others, but none worthy of a part way skip. Their latest album, The New Abnormal, is worth a listen, with my favourite track The Adults Are Talking

This is it. The album to define the new millennium. The Strokes signaled the new wave of rock bands and they were capital-C Cool. Julian Casablancas is to blame. His presentation and songwriting is seemingly effortless with his devil-may-care attitude, it's irresistible. Production that learns from the darker, grittier aspects of grunge while brightening up the sound a bit and spot cleaning for a distinct mix. The Strokes have effectively pulled us out of the 90's. For a long time, I never clicked with This Is It. For whatever reason, it wasn't flashy or interesting or impressive to me. Turns out, it didn't need to be any of those things: It's just damn good. It's the perfect tones and simple grooves. It doesn't need more than a good riff and Casablancas' million-dollar vocals. 11 great songs. None of them over 4 minutes. You've got a half hour of pure excellence. I am consistently impressed with how well-crafted this album is. This is it.

I always think I'm going to like The Strokes more than I end up doing. I think I confuse them with The Shins? Either way, this album is good. Great even. It's just not as good as I think it is. BUT THAT COVER MADE ME UNCOMFORTABLE I AM GOING TO CALL MY LOCAL GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE ABOUT IT

Amazing indie rock record! Very anthemic songwriting with great guitar leads. I'm not really that much in the vocals, but musically this is top notch! Key tracks: Is This It, The Modern Age, Soma, Barely Legal, Someday,, Last Nite, Hard To Explain, Trying Your Luck, Take It Or Leave It. 8,5 out of 10

A bunch of trust fund kids shouldn’t be able to make music this rough and rebellious, but somehow they hit the sweet spot. New York City Cops kicks ass.

Malgré le fait que l'écoute de cet album aie été la toute première sur mon nouveau casque Sony WH-1000xm5 (et non pas WH-1000xm4 comme je l'annonçais il y a quelques jours), cedit appareil ne créa aucun miracle. Les Strokes devront faire un peu mieux s'ils veulent vraiment m'impressionner.

Comme prévu, mon petit groupe fétiche des Strokes vient nous proposer une performance de haute volée. Robert n'est donc plus capable de nous surprendre, les seuls bons membres du générateurs nous étant déjà trop bien connus.

I like this. I wasn't quite sure at first, but it's good stuff.

I encountered this album a number of years ago, and purchased it before I had access to a music streaming service. I haven't listened to it often enough apparently to recognize all the songs, but I do recognize and like many of them. Glad to have this emerge from the fog of the past as I very much enjoy this album!

This is a really tidy, really tight 35 minute album. Everyone knows Last Nite, I didn't know anything else other than that and Someday, and really enjoyed this. Another 4/5 (not sure I've given 2 in a row before!), missing a bit of variety that might lift it up to a 5 but it's really good 2000s guitar music and clearly an inspiration for a lot that came after it in the mid-00s.

Not as memorable as I remembered it to be, but still a solid debut. I never noticed that the whole record goes just for about 35 minutes!!! Back in the day it felt longer. Although I personally much prefer Room On Fire, Is This It will always have a soft spot in my heart for being one of the records that introduced me to garage rock.

Very good, definitely a few stand out songs and a few meh ones. Not particularly consistent but very good overall.

This is almost a 5 for me if you put it in the context of 2001 — a year when Nickleback, Kid Rock, and Creed all and top 25 albums. Being in high school at the time, this was a first sign that music was going to get better.

There's a lot of sameness all the way through this album, but I still really enjoyed it. No real "wow" moments, but it was still a step above.

Much better than expected. This album kind of sneaked by me in the early 2000s and I never heard it other than their radio hits, which I always enjoyed. This album was pretty darn good and I'm disappointed in myself for not listening to it before now.

This band completely missed my radar duri g their early days, but I really like their sound. A notch above the rest of the early 2000s rock bands that all kinda sound similar. But this was totally enjoyable start to finish.

Fun, catchy rock 'n roll. Didn't realize how many songs on this album I was already familiar with. New York City Cops bangs. Will give 4 stars because I'm having fun and I like simple rock 'n roll despite that these are New York rich kids making a commercial version of the kind of music created by punks and legit bohemians at CBGBs in the 70's

What an iconic album.

A bit same but I think this captures the early 2000s zeitgeist well. There are at least two amazing songs on this one.

I think I came across Last Nite on a compilation CD that came free with a magazine, and was so taken with it that I got a copy of this album & have always loved it. It still sounds fresh to me. The title track is one of the great openings to any album. I love the way the song opens, and, in fact, so many of these songs have great openings, that inevitably suck you in. No point selecting favourites here, I love them all.

Fun to listen to. Vocals got a bit annoying after a while but overall very enjoyable.

Combination of somewhat simple yet catchy guitar riffs with intensive and often distorted Julian's vocals work very well. Title song and Soma stood out.

This is a great album but I still don’t think it is as groundbreaking or important as many say it is. The vocals on many songs become grating because of the effects added to his voice. The upbeat songs are bangers but the rest becomes muddled and kind of boring.

This was a bright spark amongst a lot of dross on release. Still got a decent energy to it, but perhaps seemed better than it was due to lack of anything much else worth listening to at the time. Still enjoyed its chugging along today.

Enjoyed this, even not being a Strokes fan. Love the guitar work and the driving rhythms.

Best Song: Last Nite. Sure, it's the most famous from the album, but it feels justified here. The way, as the song progresses, the line "Last Nite" starts to feel like it's being torn out of him. A truly melancholy dance song. Worst Song: Take It Or Leave It. I dig the vocals here, but the instrumentals seem to be turned too quiet, and don't quite match the vocal intensity. Overall: This is what alt rock should be. Musically talented, with this unique sound that doesn't fit the more classic rock sound. That raw, slightly degraded audio quality, particular on the vocals, gives the whole album a garage feel. Each song is as short as it needs to be, and full of hooks.

I remember when The Modern Age EP came out it went through the college town I lived in like wildfire. By the time this album was released we were in a fever pitch of excitement, and, when they finally came through on tour, it seemed like the whole town had a collective orgasm. I think Julian Casablancas described it really well when he said they sound like a band from the past who took a time machine to the future to make a record. More specifically they sound like a New Wave Velvet Underground to me. Similar to many other bands of the era (White Stripes, et al.), they weren't doing anything radically new per se, just putting the pieces together in a new and novel order. Like an irresistible sort of processed food that has refined their formula to become completely addictive. The hype surrounding them was enormous. So big that it was inevitably unsustainable. After they came through on tour and we all had our collective orgasm on that one night stand, it never felt quite the same again. At the time I was convinced the album title was a reference specifically to the impossible-to-live-up-to hype that surrounded them and I thought it was quite a clever way to address it. Is This It? Indeed it really was that simple. But man they really caught lightning in a bottle here and I was deliriously giddy being swept up in Strokes mania.

No filler, all good upbeat songs. Slightly repetitive, but that it kind of the style of the era and the band.

A lot to say about this record. It obviously held a prominent spot in my life when It was released when I was a 17 year old. I owned it and played it constantly just like everyone else I knew. It made an indelible mark on that time of my life. I probably have not listened to the full record in 20 years now. It still sounds great, both from just a straight pop pseudo Lou Reed sound and from a production standpoint. I'm wringing my hands over all of the knee-jerk bullshit reactionary decisions to 9/11. I fully remember the album art change, whatever that's fine. American's and their puritanical bullshit. But the removal of "New York City Cops" for only the US CD version is just maddening dumb. It's especially dumb that this is the only version the change was made on. The US Vinyl and every single international release contained the correct original track listing. However, for some reason the US CD version has seemingly become the definitive version as it's what all the streaming services carry. Just fucking sickening.

Funnily enough I hadn't heard this Strokes album out of their other ones, so it's a trip hearing how this is their best one. I think it's a really fun listen though I've grown to like their other works more. Still, I wanna come back to this sometime.

Many hits I already knew, a solid album to listen from beginning to end

At once gritty and urbane, the record does pretty well in living up to considerable hype. One could make a case it's all an algorithm (plus, maybe, a hologram) of VU updated to early oughts. Three great songs on the back side, more than make up for the samey effect on first side. Remains solid and enjoyable which is more than can be said of many other a next big thing.

This album is refreshing and repetitive in the same proportion. I enjoyed it, and I'm annoyed by the similar songs around the whole thing. Overall, from my perspective, this is an excellent Strokes' album, but it's far from their best.

The Strokes were the freshest thing to happen to the early noughties, and after a few albums I thought that's where they left it..... but apparently they're still going and just not particularly relevant any more. Anyway back to this album, spiky, jangly, great style, great attitude......naughty cover art. It was great!

I liked this one. It was pretty interesting how it simultaneously sounds reminiscent of old-school garage rock and of modern day alternative rock - despite falling in between the two eras. Actually a 3.5, but rounding up because I like it better than the previous two 3's.

Crazy, just a couple days ago I was telling some people how I don't know any Strokes songs (beside Reptilia) and realized I probably need to listen to their stuff a bit more. Excellent timing. I really enjoyed this album, more than I thought I would. I didn't find much enjoyment in some of their newer albums I've heard, but this one is strong. Very fun little rock album here, some nice melodies. Favorite tracks: Someday, Alone Together, Last Nite. Album art: There's two for this one, the apparent naked woman profile (though if Ebaum's World taught me anything, that could be an armpit), and the yellow and blue intricate art one. I don't know which is more iconic, I've personally seen both enough that I thought they were two different albums. I think I prefer the US release, the blue and yellow one. The colors and the design just pop, much more so than a black and white hip. 4/5

Fun album that races along. Two hits (Last Nite and Someday) that I knew already, but a couple of new discoveries here too.

This sounds a lot thinner to me than it once did - I remember hearing this for the first time and it was like a life preserver in a sea of shit. But some very simple, catchy rock, sort of on the order of The Cars, maybe. It cut through everything else that was going on and think what was going on was sort of a Limp Bizkit / Boyband / Sleaze techno phase. So anyway, this was better than that. Still very listenable - I don't know if there's a track on here that doesn't hook me at one point or another. But I have no idea what this guy is singing about, so... I'll still give it 4 stars because I'd listen all the way through.

I love 90s/00s alt rock so this should be a no brainer for me. And while the album is great it just never clicked with me to the same degree as some album from that genre from that time period.

Love this lo-fi, garage rock meets pop sound. Haven't listened to the Strokes in a long time and am having fun digging back into this era and genre.

Never really dug deep in The Strokes apart from loving the shit out of "Juicebox" but this is really good. Thought the start of the album took a little to take off, but after that it was one great song after the other.

Solid indie/garage album. This is definitely the best of the Strokes on this one, it is unfortunate that they peaked so early. The guitar riffs on this album are muddled up nicely through distortion effects and the vocals are produced to match that feel. Fave tracks: Last Nite, New York City Cops

first time listening to the strokes and i am a new fan! i admittedly don't know much about the garage band revival scene, but i found them much easier and enjoyable to listen to than other bands of this time. the vocals, surprisingly, are clear despite fogginess. every song starts off strong and unique, and begs your attention. i'm obsessed with this album cover. black and white, sensual, daring.

One of this big bands I never truly checked out, and what a shame. They have a unique sound and each song follows a formula I tend to enjoy.

A really solid album, that is great straight ahead rock with punk and indie influence. It sounds much more mature than a debut album. Hard to explain is great. Very enjoyable.

I really like this album, not their best in my opinion but certainly an iconic one with that album cover.

Their playing is a bit simplistic so I can't include this with the great works of musical art, even if those in the biz believe the album helped saved alternative rock. It's really not clear to me how good they are as musicians (though some deft guitar work and solos on The Modern Age). I'm amazed every time I think they have two guitarists; it sounds much simpler than that although yeah I can hear the two distinct styles when I listen closely. Still it's a fun album (loved the free-styling at the start of New York City Cops), an easy enjoyable listen, and includes some well-arranged stylings (bass lines kick ass in most songs) despite the simplicity. Easy to put on repeat and not get annoyed.

This came out a year or two before I properly started following indie music so I can't verify exactly how huge its influence was, but I'm willing to believe it was pretty big - its presence certainly loomed large in my school & uni years. The languid Is This It and the sprightly Someday are my two highlights, though listening back now there are a few forgettable tracks that I can *ahem* 'take or leave'. The difference in quality between this and their later albums isn't as great as common opinion says, IMO. Still, it's worth at least 4 stars.

This is just a really solid record. Every track is great, the songwriting is catchy and direct and the whole album flies by in such a joyous way. It took a few listens for this to click with me, and growing up I always preferred Room on Fire and First Impressions..., but ever since it clicked I've been revisiting these songs more and more. There's a beauty in its simplicity and it's clear how this became such an influential album; one of the first real classics of this century

Yes, this is it. This album has some true classics. This is quite the debut album for a group. I will say, not all songs are on the same level. I thought New York City Cops was the worst song on here, all others are great.

An album I own and have heard many times. I haven't listened to it in a while, so it was good to hear it again. It's almost a 5-star for me, but not quite. It lacks variety and doesn't finish as strong as it starts.

An album of my youth, gives me a feeling of nostalgia and saudade for times gone. Julian Casablanca's melancholy vocals are top tier for the sound they cultivate. I didn't know the original album cover had a bare ass on it, kind of iconic, and kind of a bummer they changed it for the puritans.

While I really like the best hits of the Strokes, I didn't find the entire album to be as listenable as I thought I would. Still enjoyed it, especially w/ someday and the modern age -- just expected to love it given how iconic the strokes are.

A couple familiar tunes, but listening made me think of Hot Hot Heat. Throwback!

Love the Strokes and this album especially, the mix of proto punk, ska and Talking Heads College Rock is rather wonderful and was a positive step in the early Noughties! Last Night is a rocker that I can imagine started many a teenage party in 2001/2! Lovely stuff all through. Great Live band too!

I remember when this came out thinking what a breath of fresh air after the final years of the 1990s (Radiohead aside, of course) and all the post-alt-grunge and pop crap that was being played on the radio at that time (Bootylicious by Destiny's Child was No. 1 on the charts the week this came out). Great tracks start to finish. Think of all the bands they inspired. These guys and the White Stripes helped save American Rock-n-Roll.

Probably the album that kick-started the post-punk revival, influential in its own right, and it is brilliant. The Modern Age, Someday, Hard TonExplain etc… tunes everywhere. It’s hard to imagine the Arctic Monkeys and countless others, good or bad, without this album. Clever guitar licks and lyrics at every turn!

I never really got into the strokes and now it feels a bit too late. This album was incredibly influential to the point where a lot of what came after sounds just like it. If I had heard this album first, perhaps my reaction would be different

4.6 + This was on heavy rotation on my iPod nano for several years, particularly at the gym. Such a tight backing band without too much extra by way of frills and effects. The bass line in “Is this It” is amazing. Vocals delivered with snearing affect mixed with general malaise. Love this one from start to finish.

Is the term Alternative? Stand out tracks we're, imo, Barely Legal, Someday and Alone, Together. Looking forward to further listens and further venturing through their discography.

One of the top debut albums by any band. So many hits

This is such an easy listen. One of the main groups that got me really interested in 'Indie' music back in the day - when I found them I was going through my divorce and needed something upbeat and different than the pop crap I was used to consuming. 'Last Night' and especially 'Hard to Explain' were like a gateway drug. 4 stars for helping to pull me out of a pit and keeping me company on my drives back and forth to Phila in the early 00's.

Throwback to gr 6/7 when I first discovered Indie/alt rock... Still a great band to this day. Last nite, is this it and someday are a good time. I always like the strokes sound. This is classic indie rock music at its best.

I have heard actually a lot about the strokes. I thought they were a lot older with how much their influence is talked about. Sounds like the killers tbh. Hmm. I don't like this. Boring indie rock. Which is crazy since this is THE boring indie rock but still. Meh. Wait no. Let em get up. This is good. Ok. Wait ok speak on it. God I knew the millennials were salivating at this. Wait today is the 25th anniversary of this album that's crazy. Good. Pivotal. Insufferable. Favourite: Barely Legal Least favourite: Take It Or Leave It

This is good but not my favorite Strokes album!

It's easy to hear why The Strokes burst onto the scene with tunes like this. But it's also hard for me to hear why this got the crazy reception it did. These songs are fun and punchy, with earwormy riffs. They're all also kind of midtempo and similar. The title track is a disappointingly lifeless intro. Things pick up from there, and tracks like "Someday" and "Last Nite" pick up the energy. Casablancas has an undeniably cool voice that injects the album with attitude. But there are too many songs that choose a riff and then stick with it without any surprises. "Alone, Together" starts with a really interesting riff that eventually gives way to more of the same. Count me as part of the group that prefers Room on Fire and finds the title of this one fitting when comparing its quality to its reputation.

It's a good album, but not really anything exceptional. Dozens of other albums by low-fi-ish guitar bands at that time, albeit the others didn't have such a distinctive album cover image.

One of the big "The" bands of the early 2000s. I was never really a big fan of that scene. This album is fine. Middle of the road for me. 3/5

Already heard part of it. This is the classic sound of the 00s. Sayint this as a 94 boy, and talking nostalgic about this "modern" rock sound, its wild. I never digged the strokes, I still believe their sound is still a bit otoo similar between songs. Still a classic that reinvented the sound of a decade. and maybe the last "big" rock n roll band.

Better than I remembered. Quintessential apathetic hipster indie. Not really sure it will have staying power long term.

I know this was a pretty big deal but The Strokes never really grabbed me. Listening through this at last and I didn't really get the hype. It's fine but I don't think it's really doing anything that innovative. I think most people just wanted to look cool, fair play.

Maybe I'm just being a grouchy old man yelling at a cloud, but why do all of these early 2000s post-punk bands/albums sound the same? It's like they got the same guy to do all the half-sung vocals, the same musicians to play the repetitive, droning rhythms, the same producer to make everything sound like it's coming through an AM radio receiver. (The bass lines are occasionally interesting, though.) I can't tell the bands or the songs apart, and I honestly don't care enough to try. It sounds like the Strokes were one of the originators of this sound, so maybe it was original at the time? Good for them, I guess.

I thought I would rock with this more. But beyond the hits, it was just kinda muffly and mediocre.

I get the feeling the Strokes has been overhyped to me prior to listening and that has resulted in this feeling of dissapointment listening to this. I mean, I always heard they were a band on the cutting edge of style and this is just very much ordinary indie rock from the 2000s. I could hear it alongside Peter Bhorn and John on an advert and it wouldn't stand out to me.

I like the songs, but the (intentionally) bad production isn't my cup of tea. Especially the vocals are abrasive and I keep asking myself his you can sound so bored while constantly screaming? The bass guitar is really nice, though.

#428/1001. 2nd hyped band in a row (after the Vines). Last Nite is of course a classic, and Hard to Explain especially when mashed up with Genie in a bottle (a Stroke of Genius), but most of the record starts to repeat itself in a way, which gets tedious in a wrong way (nit the Ramones way that is).

This is an absolute indie classic with some great tunes, but at the same time it feels quite one note to me and there's a few tracks that don't feel standout. It's a good album, borderline very good, but I'd definitely have a couple of other Strokes albums over this one.

Great debut from The Strokes

A very consistent sound despite it being borrowed from a handful of the bands they idolized, I'd personally rather listen to the guys who inspired The Strokes. They may have never made a better album than this, but they have a few better hits at least.

I remember hearing Last Nite a lot thee apparatus of mass communication, television, back in the day and finding it somewhat intriguing, but being a young metal teen just about to dive into the world of black metal more deeply at the time, I couldn't really let myself like or look into it too much back then. I've never come across this band ever since until now and this album's pretty alright actually. I guess they were going for a natural, "dirty" production with the album but listening to it today, it still sounds very Pro Toolsy, even though I get what they're after. This makes the album sound somewhat flat though, which sadly was a bit of a curse of all albums at the time. Had this been an actual analog recording with some proper dynamics, it would've only benefitted the album. Now it's just an alright album to me.

It's a solid album that definitely deserves its place here. I don't know that I'd heard it all the way through before. The sound from this album kinda took over the airwaves when it came out. That retro sound that they fit here just worked. I don't know that I'll be seeking it out again, but I'm glad I listened through it.

Even though it reeks of New York cuntness, I guess this album had its importance by launching a catchy indie pop-tinted post punk music style that sold a gazillion of records and they still sell out big arenas with their concerts 20+ years later. If you care for that sort of thing.

Someday and Last Nite are classics of this time and sound.

I've heard "Reptiles" by The Strokes previously, and though it's a later song, the musicality is pretty much the same here. The catchy melodies, the energetic guitars and interesting basslines, Julian Casablancas's voice having some distortion to it. I do like the music for the most part (the fun guitars and it being hooky certainly helps), but there's not much variety.

Liked only a couple of songs

This was good. There were some catchy tunes. I wish the vocals were pushed to the front more and not so obscured by the music. Not sure I’m understanding the hype though. I don’t know anything about them, but I feel like this style was so prevalent during the 2000s that maybe it just doesn’t sound as innovative to me.

A progressive collection of upbeat, aggressive rock songs just this side of punk, yet simple in composition. The listen was interesting as a whole but it never really grabbed my attention enough to want to take a return trip.

What a time it was for a really specific brand of soft-boy sexism. The sound is fine, I would have enjoyed this a lot as a teen when -importantly- my brain hadn't developed properly and I just enjoyed vague indie sounds and pseudo-sexy vibes; but honestly now it repulses me.. Barely Legal? What the fuck is that, like honestly? This is what passed for okay music in 2001? Even the fact Last Nite is spelt Last Nite. Grow the fuck up, this isn't MSN. There are also evil little lyrics in here "pretend to be nice so I can be mean" - girl, that's gaslighting 101. This whole album feels like the diary of an (older) boy that my friend would have been in a horribly toxic relationship with and I'd be screaming DUMP HIM!!!! g2g - Nil pois. (p.s. my toe is INVOLUNTARILY tapping and that is because I was hard-wired to enjoy this music when I was younger and didn't know better music was out there, and obviously it is skins-core which obviously we were all obsessed with and I don't exist in a vacuum).

HOT TAKE ALERT this album is massively overrated. Like, it's good enough indie guitar music, I enjoy it, there are a few tracks I think are really great, but I really feel like The Strokes were such a product of hype and having lots of money for PR rather than real talent - as evidenced by the fact they never really made anything good again other than the occasional song. In a just world Liars would have been the weirdo 2000s New York band who revolutionised music. I'd give it three and a half stars but I'm feeling hot and bothered today (and not in a sexy slap of the bum way) so it gets a grumpy three.

Expectation: -> I feel that I should know this band and maybe do but don't realize it? After listening: -> Wow this band is popular. I'm quite familiar with and enjoy the top two songs listed below. Somehow, though, I've never hit the like button on Spotify. Those two have about 1.5 billion streams in sum. Very impressive. This is a cohesive project and is very well done. One of my struggles with this album is that all of the songs sound so alike. So much so that sometimes I wonder if the same song has been on for ten minutes. Aside from that, The Strokes do know how to create something pretty catchy. I actually do like the distortion on the vocals; I think it fits their style really well. I can appreciate some of the guitar riffs, but they are pretty simple and something that you might learn in your very first week or two of picking up a guitar. Alas, they are pretty nice to listen to and get kind of lost in. This album has a lot of very specific things that I like and appreciate, but for me it would be hard to have on repeat.

I don't mind The Strokes at all, they've got some great hits. Do I like this album though? It's pretty good, although a little repetitive. I'd like to hear their sound evolve and expand throughout, but it's mostly the same. Some decent, big tracks like "Last Nite" and "Someday". A high 3, but not quite a 4.

6/10 Best songs: Alone Together I knew a lot of people very into the Strokes back in the day. Personally, I never got into them, despite being very into indie rock. Having listened to this album now I find that nothing has changed. It's a perfectly cromulent album - good music (strong bass/guitars in particular) that becomes very sonically repetitive by the end of the album, vocals that just don't work for me, and barely discernable lyrics. It ends up sounding a bit interchangeable with other indie(?) rock/alt rock bands of the time to be honest. Not awful, but it's telling that the album cover is the thing about the album that stands out the most.

In no way do I mean that this album sounds dated, but I was taken by how emblematic it is of a very particular early-mid 2000s sound. Though at 2001, I guess they were at the forefront of creating said sound. Last Nite still doing numbers in my house after all this time.
