Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Pretty cool album. Not much variety, but enough to not dismiss it. At least the similarity sounds good.
Great! So many good tracks
Television re-run
An album of my youth, gives me a feeling of nostalgia and saudade for times gone. Julian Casablanca's melancholy vocals are top tier for the sound they cultivate. I didn't know the original album cover had a bare ass on it, kind of iconic, and kind of a bummer they changed it for the puritans.
Bringing the shades of Ramones and Velvets into the 21st century.
// Favs: Is This It / Soma / Hard To Explain Score: Decent to Strong 4
I very much dig it
While I really like the best hits of the Strokes, I didn't find the entire album to be as listenable as I thought I would. Still enjoyed it, especially w/ someday and the modern age -- just expected to love it given how iconic the strokes are.
A couple familiar tunes, but listening made me think of Hot Hot Heat. Throwback!
Love the Strokes and this album especially, the mix of proto punk, ska and Talking Heads College Rock is rather wonderful and was a positive step in the early Noughties! Last Night is a rocker that I can imagine started many a teenage party in 2001/2! Lovely stuff all through. Great Live band too!
Love it. Have US first pressing
It's a slapper, what can I say. There are good mainstream hits and some really good deeper cuts. Very strong closer song
Taken in by the razzamatazz back in 2001, and thoroughly enjoyed the music and the style. Still quite like it 20 years on, but Julian's vocal delivery can irritate.
Decent
I’m gonna put it in the rotation
Very strong effort from the Strokes, second half could be a little more varied.
Brilliant listen
Pretty good
Liked The Modern Age and Trying Your Luck. Merits more listens.
Loved it
I remember when this came out thinking what a breath of fresh air after the final years of the 1990s (Radiohead aside, of course) and all the post-alt-grunge and pop crap that was being played on the radio at that time (Bootylicious by Destiny's Child was No. 1 on the charts the week this came out). Great tracks start to finish. Think of all the bands they inspired. These guys and the White Stripes helped save American Rock-n-Roll.
Great album and two really great songs, (Someday & Last Nite). 8/10.
Pretty good. Had a punk sound that was clean
Nostalgic as hell. Used to bump this a lot back in the day. Plenty of decent tracks, Someday, Last Nite, Hard To Explain. 4/5
Probably the album that kick-started the post-punk revival, influential in its own right, and it is brilliant. The Modern Age, Someday, Hard TonExplain etc… tunes everywhere. It’s hard to imagine the Arctic Monkeys and countless others, good or bad, without this album. Clever guitar licks and lyrics at every turn!
catchy, fun, albeit simple. A nice short and sweet listen with no filler, solid 7.5-8/10
obviously I have heard this before but better than I remember "We all disagree, I think we should disagree, yeah" dont think I ever heard soma, great reference obligatory she was just 18 if you now what I mean song of course the guitar in barely legal sounds like arcades in parts not sure it that's deliberate
I never really got into the strokes and now it feels a bit too late. This album was incredibly influential to the point where a lot of what came after sounds just like it. If I had heard this album first, perhaps my reaction would be different
Fine album that I've liked since it was released
Hard to overstate how massively influential this album was to 21st century rock music. Has a couple songs that are kinda weak and sound the same but overall this rules
Pretty great album, that kicked off an era.
Really nice and smooth songs to listen everyday
That's high school right there.
love it
Very guitar driven. Cool rock vibe
Pretty catchy music for hanging out.
not my favorite strokes album but an incredibly strong debut.
I know and love this album, but I will listen to it again if you insist 💕
5
Solid album
Thought it was a little repetitive in type of sound but enjoyed it more after a second listen.
Great album, great album cover lol
Great
Very accessible and listenable.
A great album and an easy listen.
Listened to this one before, it's a real solid album and definitely The Strokes definitive album. 4/5.
I like this sound. Probably a 4. Let's see about individual songs.... There are 4 of 11 that I really like, as well as sections of others! This pushes it near-or-into 5 territory. I think it's just a 4 though. Would probably be an 8-9/10
I liked this when it first came out, still do
Great Retro Rock!
it was good! i even favorited a song.
Good but repetitive.
I love the sound and energy of this album, makes me want to move. Brings me back to the Navy years when I used to run to it
For the life of me can't see how I DIDN'T own this album back in the day. Super debut 💪
A real throwback for me - a solid collection of songs.
Some of the songs sound a bit weak with the passage of time but it's still a modern cultural classic. 4
forgot how goods this was - really enjoyed it with only 1 or 2 weak tracks.
Good stuff
4.6 + This was on heavy rotation on my iPod nano for several years, particularly at the gym. Such a tight backing band without too much extra by way of frills and effects. The bass line in “Is this It” is amazing. Vocals delivered with snearing affect mixed with general malaise. Love this one from start to finish.
good album
alt/punk rock, cool riffs (no solos really), not horrible vocals. The sound is cool, though, and there are a few I know on there.
4.5, classic album with some top tunes, reminds me of thursday nights
A classic obviously, great consistent sound and just a neato album to throw on
I enjoyed this album quite a bit on my first listen through. I would, based on my first listen through, recommend "Is This It" to anyone who might enjoy something a little more indie. Is the term Alternative? Stand out tracks we're, imo, Barely Legal, Someday and Alone, Together. Looking forward to further listens and further venturing through their discography.
Is this is it gang shit fell asleep shout out super bowl
Enjoyable
Classic.
One of the top debut albums by any band. So many hits
This is such an easy listen. One of the main groups that got me really interested in 'Indie' music back in the day - when I found them I was going through my divorce and needed something upbeat and different than the pop crap I was used to consuming. 'Last Night' and especially 'Hard to Explain' were like a gateway drug. 4 stars for helping to pull me out of a pit and keeping me company on my drives back and forth to Phila in the early 00's.
Found a new favourite Strokes song. Listened 15/1/21
4/5 This one hits me in my nostalgia zone
7.5/10
Lovely!! He's able to put emotion in his voice while still sounding like himself.
Really good indie rock. Seemed a bit out of time, sice they are from 2001
Enjoyable unique rock band.
Love the mixing here. The vocals are unique and that guitar tone is to die for.
Good nostalgia album.
Great album, lots of cool guitar and bass parts to it and definitely a distinct early 2000s sound
Listened to this album so many times in my first year at uni. Great album. 4.25 stars.
Throwback to gr 6/7 when I first discovered Indie/alt rock... Still a great band to this day. Last nite, is this it and someday are a good time. Fun fact - The Strokes debut was set for release in 2001, but after 9/11 happened they replaced the song NYC Cops with a different one to avoid negative backlash and disrespecting nyc law reinforcement.
I always like the strokes sound. This is classic indie rock music at its best.
THE STROKES
Not a bad song on here, also no overwhelmingly great ones for me either. More upbeat than I thought it'd be. Standout Tracks: Hard To Explain, Trying Your Luck
the strokes <3
This was good. There were some catchy tunes. I wish the vocals were pushed to the front more and not so obscured by the music. Not sure I’m understanding the hype though. I don’t know anything about them, but I feel like this style was so prevalent during the 2000s that maybe it just doesn’t sound as innovative to me.
A progressive collection of upbeat, aggressive rock songs just this side of punk, yet simple in composition. The listen was interesting as a whole but it never really grabbed my attention enough to want to take a return trip.
Unfortunately I fail to see the hype in this one. Nothing really felt like the praise I’ve heard about this Album and The Strokes in general. 6/10
Ihan Jees rallattelua ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Every song on this album sounds the same. No thoughts but I do feel like a sheep rating every album a 3/5. Whoopsies. 3/5.
I think a live concert with this band would be really good but the album is not quite the same. 3 stars or C+.
What a time it was for a really specific brand of soft-boy sexism. The sound is fine, I would have enjoyed this a lot as a teen when -importantly- my brain hadn't developed properly and I just enjoyed vague indie sounds and pseudo-sexy vibes; but honestly now it repulses me.. Barely Legal? What the fuck is that, like honestly? This is what passed for okay music in 2001? Even the fact Last Nite is spelt Last Nite. Grow the fuck up, this isn't MSN. There are also evil little lyrics in here "pretend to be nice so I can be mean" - girl, that's gaslighting 101. This whole album feels like the diary of an (older) boy that my friend would have been in a horribly toxic relationship with and I'd be screaming DUMP HIM!!!! g2g - Nil pois. (p.s. my toe is INVOLUNTARILY tapping and that is because I was hard-wired to enjoy this music when I was younger and didn't know better music was out there, and obviously it is skins-core which obviously we were all obsessed with and I don't exist in a vacuum).
HOT TAKE ALERT this album is massively overrated. Like, it's good enough indie guitar music, I enjoy it, there are a few tracks I think are really great, but I really feel like The Strokes were such a product of hype and having lots of money for PR rather than real talent - as evidenced by the fact they never really made anything good again other than the occasional song. In a just world Liars would have been the weirdo 2000s New York band who revolutionised music. I'd give it three and a half stars but I'm feeling hot and bothered today (and not in a sexy slap of the bum way) so it gets a grumpy three.
Expectation: -> I feel that I should know this band and maybe do but don't realize it? After listening: -> Wow this band is popular. I'm quite familiar with and enjoy the top two songs listed below. Somehow, though, I've never hit the like button on Spotify. Those two have about 1.5 billion streams in sum. Very impressive. This is a cohesive project and is very well done. Though I would not say this is my favorite rock style, I can see why they are beloved. Track ranking: Last Nite Someday Modern Hard To Is This It Started Legal Alone Take It Luck Soma
I follow you down till the sound of my music preference will haunt you type shit Τζούλιαν, κάλμα.
One of my struggles with this album is that all of the songs sound so alike. So much so that sometimes I wonder if the same song has been on for ten minutes. Aside from that, The Strokes do know how to create something pretty catchy. I actually do like the distortion on the vocals; I think it fits their style really well. I can appreciate some of the guitar riffs, but they are pretty simple and something that you might learn in your very first week or two of picking up a guitar. Alas, they are pretty nice to listen to and get kind of lost in. This album has a lot of very specific things that I like and appreciate, but for me it would be hard to have on repeat.
I don't mind The Strokes at all, they've got some great hits. Do I like this album though? It's pretty good, although a little repetitive. I'd like to hear their sound evolve and expand throughout, but it's mostly the same. Some decent, big tracks like "Last Nite" and "Someday". A high 3, but not quite a 4.
I love selfless
Not my fav but Repitilia is fun!
Were they the saviours of rock 'n roll? I mean it's no Marquee Moon, but what is? Not terrible, occasionally good, sometimes irritating.
6/10 Best songs: Alone Together I knew a lot of people very into the Strokes back in the day. Personally, I never got into them, despite being very into indie rock. Having listened to this album now I find that nothing has changed. It's a perfectly cromulent album - good music (strong bass/guitars in particular) that becomes very sonically repetitive by the end of the album, vocals that just don't work for me, and barely discernable lyrics. It ends up sounding a bit interchangeable with other indie(?) rock/alt rock bands of the time to be honest. Not awful, but it's telling that the album cover is the thing about the album that stands out the most.
Standouts Someday Last Nite
🙂
not bad, glad to have been introduced to the Strokes this way, autoplay played Call It Fate, Call It Karma right after, loved that song.
Nice bum
In no way do I mean that this album sounds dated, but I was taken by how emblematic it is of a very particular early-mid 2000s sound. Though at 2001, I guess they were at the forefront of creating said sound. Last Nite still doing numbers in my house after all this time.
Estuvo bueno. Es un gran albúm
It all sounded pretty much the same, but I liked the sound, so.... yeah, good shit.
Overall like kinda mid, wish I could give it half stars. The first song was great.
Entertaining debut, not their best album IMO.
This album is one long song. The Strokes have a pleasant sound, though.
Not bad but it's a bit samey after a while.
good, not rly my taste
I tell you about a stroke (it's my pebnis)
Enjoyed the album, pretty nostalgic as a 90s kid
solid. no standouts
I liked some of this recording. don't recall ever hearing any of it before.
Enjoyed, if not a little samey at times. The vocal effect was a hair grating, but largely had fun with the vibe.
i thought the album cover meant i was about to hear some weird instruments, but overall it's just good.
Fun good time album. One of the better records to come out in the early 2000's
This was an important album in that it broke through the pop music that was dominating the charts and ushered in a wave of garage rock bands. Without that context though, this album is... ok. They figured out a formula they liked and just hammered it over and over. The basslines occasionally stand out, but the vocals kinda sound the same for most of the album, as do the stabbing guitars. Staccato riffs are great, but not when that's about all you play.
Pleasant radio-friendly rock but can't say that much about it. Unlike the album cover, the sound is a bit "meh" and predictable. Too plain (bass pumping out 8ths, no standout groovy licks).
good
Ei täysin lemppari strokesi mut hyvä kuitenkin
A strong and obvious Velvet Underground influence to this album, which makes it slightly more interesting than I was expecting it to be, elements of grunge and punk too bubbling along quite nicely through the tracks. on the whole it's.... ok, at least I got through the whole album. The cover is bloody awful, even Spinal Tap wouldn't sink this low!.
Gossip Girl for the Indie Boys
2,7/5
The instrumentation is beautiful, vocals are raw, and do a wonderful job portraying all those emotions. Not a single dud in the album, but unfortunately, not a single song stuck with me.
Good, worth a listen
Some good stuff
Someday has been a banger since the first time I heard it.
Don't even remember the next day
The Strokes' “Is This It” is proof that good production can only partially make up for the musicians' limited skills. Some of the song ideas are pretty good, and I generally like the sound—even if the mid-heavy vocal mix gets a bit annoying after a while. Unfortunately, the drummer and bassist only know two grooves, and the guitarist sounds like he just picked up the instrument last year. Sure, that’s how garage rock works, but the result is mostly just boring. Not bad, but boring. Listening to one of these songs every now and then would be fine. But I don’t need an entire album of it.
Meh. Okay.
Tidy and polite
Kinda all sounded the same - some bangers tho
A band I've never really gotten into. I don't mind them and have some good songs, but nothing outstanding.
Never really got into them but there's a few decent songs here.
Out of all of the artists, we've listened to so far, this has got to be the one that I am the most familiar with their discography. After listening to this album, i'm now pretty familiar with all their albums except for "first impressions of earth." Every album is good and its own right, and this one is no exception. My favorites are the 2020 album "The New Abnormal" and "Angles" from 2011. In general, I think they have gradually improved over time, but this album might be slightly better than a few that follow it. The title track has a great bass line, and "Someday," "Last Night," and "Hard to Explain" are all very memorable singles. The strokes are a band that dance the line of having their own distinct sound without sounding repetitive; clean guitars and dirty vocals. The lead singer is very talented and the guitar lines are always catchy. All in all, to me, this just sounded like a very solid The Strokes album. Strong three to a light four
I remember when this album came out, there was a lot of buzz about it from the critics. I used to have a copy, but appear to have gotten rid of it (or possibly a babysitter nicked it, lol -- I remember a few CDs went missing, one time). Anyway, it still sounds pretty good, I guess -- although I'd say that I like it, more than I love it. So a 3, or a 4 - but I think I'll go with a 3. Still hear "Someday" and "Last Night" on the radio; I like "Someday" better. Second-best song "Hard to Explain," maybe? A lot of the songs seem to sound kind of the same, though; it's a good enough sound, but . . . not a lot of variety? So, yeah, a 3, rather than a 4.
the distorted vocals give it a warm, cozy feeling I always thought the Strokes were overrated, but it's a good album. It justs starts to lose interest as the songs become samey. The same guitar strumming patterns and casual, washed out sound. I have to acknowledge that this album had quite an influence on the pop rock of the 2000s and beyond. I think the Strokes loom large over my and my generation's memory of growing up
After listening to this one, go track down The Slits for an alternative.
objectively not one single bad song on that album, but somehow regardless of multiple tries over the years for me it just doesn't hit the spot, feels monotonous and feels like its going nowhere
I love the instrumentals of this album they're incredibly powerful. I love the guitars but im a sucker fo⁷r some drums and a bass. I appreciate Casablancas singing style, on most of the tracks he sounds very non chalant and uncaring but then on tracks like New York he yells into the microphone and you can feel the emotion. It also feels like hes being crowded by the instrumentals and its kind of claustrophobic which is really cool, I just wish they'd boost his volume a bit more. One thing that holds this album down is the track Barely Legal. The entire concept is vapid and predatory. Although the song may be about his dad's relationship with a young girl, I'm not entirely sure of that and it makes me pretty uncomfortable. Except for moments near the end of the record, This Is It is incredibly monotonous, they clearly have a lot of skill, I'd love to see them push boundaries and do something that wasnt so heavily inspired by previous artists. :) 2.5/5
This album sounds fantastic and fun. Just don't look or listen too closely or you might mistake its joyful sound as something meaningful.
Good but overrated as hell.
Betterment thin coalplay
good bass tracks, the vocal compression/overdrive thing really started to bother me.
Didn't really like it after first listen, but on second one it opened to me in different way, definitely going to be re-listened many times in the near future, really good rock music, nice radio effect on vocals. 6.4 | Hard To Explain
Did not land for me. Was alright
Wears its influences on its sleeve bc every song on it sounds familiar. Even so, there are a few terrific head bopping singles throughout. I don’t know any of their other stuff but my guess is that a strokes going steady comp would be pretty enjoyable and imminently forgettable. The album doesn’t have anything new to say sonically or lyrically but the boys had time to bash out a few bangers, I guess. Entirely unsurprising that this was made by some rich kids slumming it but whatever.
enjoyed a few, but mostly sound the same to me
Happy y catchy
Good stuff
Got better as it went
Voice of angel. Album was so long I actually died and she greeted me.
I love the vibe of the songs, im not a big "The Strokes" fan but I really enjoyed the album. Even if most of the songs are repetitive which again doesnt let the album shine. Overall i think it was solid, one of the best songs there was "Trying your luck".
Hab ich teilweise schon mal gehört. Erinnert mich an die 'The happy fits' zeit. Garage band vibes lowkey.
It was ok. It all kinda blended together. Not sure if it was the lead singers voice or what
The Strokes, a band I haven't truly listened to besides a number of the singles. For a debut album this is tightly controlled but a little same samey. Really interesting sound overall, something new at the time but calling back to the past at the same time. This album is an enigma.
good rock album nothing much to add
It is good but not amazing. Pretty one note throughout but not in a bad way. This is movie background music to me. I like it, but it's the music that plays while you focus on something better happening. Bonus points for being short, any longer and this would feel torturous.
It was allright, had some "hits" I had heard before but nothing stood out too much.
Knew most of this album, but the bits I didn't know weren't really any different. It's all fairly generic indie-fuzz-covered poprock. It was all perfectly listenable, it's fairly tuneful, but the scratchy vocals get a bit grating after a while, and the guitars don't do anything even remotely interesting through the course of the whole album. Distinctly average. Low 3.
Felt like typical britrock with an American accent. Enjoyable enough but missing something. Low 3
Is this it? I don't think so. There's a lot of filler besides 2 or 3 above‑average songs. Nothing more.
nostalgic but still meh
You know what I’m not sure. I mean this was huge in the early oughts, one of the most prominent of the post punk revival bands. This is really music for the social media generation, based on expressing FOMO, they’re singing about their party life you will never be a part of while also feeling they are not a part of it. Music is the genre staples of garage rock mixed with post punk. This is one of the better examples of the genre so it should be on the list, but kinda tedious and boring at times.
I was never really that keen on the Strokes since I found their energy to be a bit lacking at times, but this album wasn't too bad to listen to. I do prefer to listen to other garage rock artists like The Hives and Royal Republic though. At least the songs were quick, simple and jolly.
it was aight
1 - Is This It (a mellower opener with the Pavement influenced relaxed sound. Song shows signs of picking up but drops back down. This song is fine) 3/5 2 - The Modern Age (a much better and more driving riff which is probably what they were going for on this album. Julian kind of sounds like Iggy Pop on this for some reason) 3.5/5 3 - Soma (sort of sounds like a changeup of the previous track rather than a new separate song. Julian's rougher shoutier voice works better than his clean singing at this point in his career) 3.5/5 4 - Barely Legal (3rd song in a row to use the same chords and key. The bridge halfway though actually works rather well though) 3/5 5 - Someday (an acceptable mid tempo garage rock piece. One of the first instances of real interplay between instruments is found here. Nothing else to this otherwise; it sounds like an advertisement) 3/5 6 - Alone, Together (Julien finds a really good melody to sing and latches onto it. The guitar freak out towards the end is a nice touch) 3.5/5 7 - Last Nite (the big hit off of this album and it's easy to see why. A beat that gets you moving right away, a performance with some oomph from Julian, and an energy that the rest of the record doesn't quite match) 4/5 8 - Hard to Explain (a spirited performance from Julian. I usually don't consider the frontman this often but so much of this album hinges on his performances he really makes or breaks each song. His voice is really complimented by the noisier guitar. The sudden stop bumps this up a notch) 4/5 9 - New York City Cops (the slow buildup into the jumping beat is a very welcome change. At least Julian sounds like himself rather than a hybrid the garage rockers who came before him here. The last verse is quite good in all its shouty glory) 3.5/5 10 - Trying Your Luck (the instrumental does something interesting here, and it builds somewhat from start to end. Nothing else to this song otherwise) 3/5 11 - (this is at least the 5th song to start the same way on this album. The verses at least do something fun melody wise with a staggered delivery before getting a little more aggressive on the prechorus. There's even a short solo at the bridge. A fine closer) 4/5 OVERALL - 7.7/10
I never found this type of indie rock very interesting. All these bands sound the same to me, with same sounding singers and same sounding songs. There were some interesting guitar moments I enjoyed, but mostly this was a very 'meh' experience. 2.5/5
Chillcito, para poner de fondo y laburar
a lot of the songs lowkey sound the same but there are a couple of bangers
Not bad - Got kinda same
Good album but got a bit repetitive over time. Still classic 2000's indie rock.
I liked this initially, however, there is a sameness to the music that leaves it feeling bland. It's an album that is a comfortable listen and it is enjoyable to a point. It's just that after a while the songs kind of blur together
Actually, not a bad album at all. I enjoyed having it in the background and it had this old sound to it, but it seems to have been released not so long ago. There were even a couple of songs that had quite enjoyable little guitar solos, but it's overall quite nice having it in the background.
I wanted to love this more but a lot sounds the same
Some of these tracks ring a bell. I think I'd like it more without the vocal effects.
Definitely a Strokes album
I get why it's on the list, but really not for me. Lyrically I've found a multitude of songs I connect with better
Decent pop rock album
It’s an okay album, not their best.
Every song sounds the same.
Saved a couple of songs
Pretty good. ★★★
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Very Good - This album is a bit strange in the sense that I really like it and there are moments that stick in my head, but not many of the tracks are super memorable in their own right. It’s almost that I like the album but not the individual songs. Still this is on the higher end of 3 as I do really enjoy the overall feel of the album.
I like the Strokes, however I've listened to this album a few times over the years and I've never understood why people were so hyped over it. There are a few really good tracks, but a lot of middling stuff, and the lo-fi effect over Julien Casablancas' voice is way over-used. Some of their other albums are far superior.
didn't listen COME BACK AGAIN LATER
good vibes, first kinda intro to the strokes. great guitars. good to study and chill to
Decent album, but also nothing that stood out as exceptional to me. I know I've used that for a number of albums on this list already. Therefore, my own reviews are also guilty of the same sin of being repetitive.
Tell me you're an early millenial without telling me you're an early millenial. I confused last nite and someday about a dozen times today. It's catchy but samey.
I liked this album when it came out and 20 years ago I might have given this a 4. But today it’s a solid 3.
Doh, I was expecting GREAT things from this album but it was all a bit samey 😕
period
My favorite song from this album is definitely Soma
Very fun and new sound from the Strokes I can’t listen to a few songs and there are a couple skips but the bangers are bangers, and you can see it’s influence on other music artists
Song I like: last nite
3,4 Highlights: Last Nite, Hard To Explain
It's fine if you like The Strokes I guess
It was a bit distracted today so I didn’t quite notice this one. Seems good and rather short as well
Pretty good
6/10 not a big fan of the band tbh
Although i listened to this album for the first time today, I had listened to and really liked the follow-up, Room On Fire. In my opinion, Room On Fire is a better album, but that may just be because I heard it first and it became my version of the definitive Strokes album. They are very similar, but they're both good and aside from the tracks that got radio play, Alone Together is a great song with the rest of the album being pretty consistent. It's a high 3 stars - the follow up would have been a 4.
Catchy tracks, but they all sound so very similar to each other.
Listened to this while playing Final Girl. I won! I remember downloading this album illegally back in the day. I probably would have given it a solid 4 back then...but now it gets a 3. A few great catchy songs...definitely better than a lot of the other albums that made the cut for this list.
The debut album from The Strokes, an American Garage Rock band from New York City. 2001. Fun fact: the ablum released in Australia first apparently because they got some buzz while being a supporting act for "You Am I"'s tour. I tried reading some critical reviews from the time, retrospective opinons by fans, and the lyrics while I was listening to this one. Both critics of the time and retrospective fans have a beloved feeling towards this album. Descriptions you can find both have to say about the album is "Timeless classic," "formative," and "influential." It's interesting to see people echo the same praise they said back when it first released. Is that truly a testament to the album? Based on my own music history knowledge and experience, this style did become very popular in the early 00's. You can find earlier instances of this style but with any aesthetic taste, it's origin is irrelevant to its popularity. People will like it when they like it. It's kind of stereotypical teen/young adult album. Its tales are about the problems people so often face in young love and trying to find their place in the world as they emerge from the inbetween of child and adult. The song writer feeling anxiety, directionless, and lonely in their life. Even some of the frustration voiced in songs like "Alone, Together," feel like there's a lack of conviction/action behind it. At least to me. And all this so say, it feels so very stereotypically Millenial from top to bottom. If someone other than me ends up reading this and they happen to like The Strokes or this album in particular then do not take offense to me saying I didn't like this one. I didn't hate it either. Perhaps we can blame the fact I'm not in the inbetween of child and adult, unsure and anxious with life where this might speak to me. Or perhaps we blame the highsight from which I get to hear this album through. If it was so influential then so many other albums that came after it have surpassed it both musically, lyrically, and emotionally that I can't give it more than a 5/10.
Just a very middle of the road rock record. I thought that it was made earlier than the 2000's. But I was wrong there.
Adoreeei...
A blast of nostalgia, solid 6 out of 10.
3.5
decent
Even with some stone-cold hits on it, the overall impression of the album is slightly tarnished by the monotony and sameness of the arrangements. I understand it's a stylistic thing, but if the album were shorter, the rating would be higher.
Decent
For a debut album, The Strokes present a refined sound that proves they know their vibe earlier in their career than most. I always had a distaste for The Strokes, but found myself appreciating the narrow focus of the sounds they are able to achieve with simple riffs and arrangements of just a few instruments. The hits on this album like Last Nite find a greater appreciation in the context of the other songs on this album, and I enjoyed this opportunity to become more familiar with the music. However, after several songs I found myself tiring of the distortion effects on the vocals, and began wishing for a song or two with a cleaner sound, if only for the variety.
This album is not ordinary one. I just guess it’s not for me. Didn’t have any song that like blew my mind, so 6/10
Some of these songs are indie-Rock-classics, others are less memorable.
ai conheço esse tb FAVS (top 3): barely legal; alone, together; new your city cops mençoes honrosas: is this it, soma, someday, last nite, hard to explain, trying your luck acho as musicas meio iguais e repetitivas mas como elas sao boas pelo menos é alguma coisa ne KKKKKK eu amo; ah e tbm n aguento essa capa mds nota final: 3.5/5
Not bad but extremely overrated. Re-invented rock music, my arse.
This album is really interesting and hard to listen to at the same time. Fun experience but not likely I'm coming back
Nice album, rate it 6,8/10 need to listen to it more for it to be higher. Old, the band got great songs
Coldplay left me well, cold
It's fine.
alright album it was kinda fun but wouldn’t listen often
Important in it's space and time and very influential but I've never loved it. 3
Solid album nothing profound or ground breaking.
Love the Strokes. Didn't want to listen to this whole album at the same time.
When this came out I really didnt like it as they just sounded like a Television tribute band. They still do
not my vibe but i saved a couple of tracks
i mean, ya can’t go wrong with the strokes
Is this it?
solid 6,5/10 this is something im definitely gonna listen while working out, not too bad overall but also not a masterpiece
Good, but their third best album in my opinion. Just makes me want to listen to their two better ones.
There’s one song that’s definitely still popular I think third on the album. Otherwise just another rock album, better than Bowie not as good as Fleetwood
it doesn't do much lyrically and musically but is still very entertaining to listen to.
Kinda bland but listenable
It was pretty good, not my usual genre of music but good. My two tracks that I liked most and added to my playlist was ‘Last Nite’ and ‘Take it Or Leave it’. The beginning of the album was more slow and sad like, but as it progressed it became for fast paced and happy. I would say 6.5/10 because I like it but not enough to add most songs to my playlists.
not that bad, but too loud and fast, so I don't like it sm
Swaggy
I still really enjoy “Take it or leave it”. The rest was okay.
Liked a couple of the songs, decently catchy. 3/5
Interesting, some songs are great but overall not my style
Prima album
6/10
The bridge between 1990's punk and 2000's butt rock.
was just ok. I remember really liking it when it first came out though. 3stars
We hardly need reminding that when this came out it was "the new Rolling Stones", "the new Velvet Underground" and a revolutionary new direction in rock and roll. Of course it's nothing of the sort. It's a cool pop album that's recorded like a throwback to the sixties with a set of songs that, to be honest, all start to sound a bit the same after a while. There are certainly worse ways to spend 40 minutes, but it's not going to change your life.
I liked it.. I can see how other people want to listen to it but not my cup of tea.
Cool band, cool sound, I just wish I liked the songs more. For whatever reason I just can't connect with them. If I was going to create a band I'd probably want it to have an overall sound like this, but when I hear them I always hit next. The songs are catchy, just not compelling.
Yep. It's a rock album. Some good grooves/hooks. At the point it was released, it was a decent change from what was being released. Not overly processed. Would listen again.
Cool background music. All solid good songs but only a few stuck out to me. 7/10
Cool album, very influential but bit aged
192/1001 The Strokes - Is This It Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❎ I was 11 at the time of this release and I remember a kid at school had an older brother, who would pass on new music to us and this was one of the albums that was played a lot at the time, thinking we were incredibly cool. As I discovered other stuff later, this album fell by the wayside and I remember listening to this a few years back and quite frankly thought "is this it?" On listening to this again, I'm still in the same mindset. Last Nite still absolutely slaps.
not my music type but liked it
Lol I was a teenager in 2001 - if I didn't own this album, most of my friends did and hoooo boy
Whenever I listen to the Strokes I feel like I'm listening to the same song over and over again. To be fair it is a pretty good song. 2.5 -> 3/5
The irony of this is that the last album I rated, it got a 1 because it just wasn’t it for me. This album was the next one up. Got a chuckle out of me. It’s starting at a 3 pre-listening because of that. Update: It’s staying at a 3, which is solid.
Was a fun listen, absolutely loved the instrumentals, however i did believe the lyrics were sort of vague and like not in the good way, i found myself constantly questioning wth the songs were even talking about
I like it a lot. Love the groove in the album!
This is a pleasant fun album. Liked it on the first listen.
Yepp
I think it’s a bit overrated but I don’t think I listened to it well. I really like Soma though
Last night is still solid. Great guitar work throughout the album. The singing feels boring and repetitive at times
Great opening track, really sets the tone of the album. Barely Legal is the best track of the album. Last Nite has a reaaaaally sick solo guitar lol
The cover slaps. A bit monotone and I cant understand what the singer is saying without reading the lyrics. Songs I liked: - Someday - Last Nite
If i were a teenager boy I would love it
Mid, not listened at full attention but didn't get my attention that well.. and proof is that finally a song got my attention and I was like oh I love this and then see that the album finished.. so yeah..
Typical early 2000s album. The hits are good, filler is filler.
normally not my style, but was pulled back to 2018 me when I was very much into the strokes for the summer. just overall good and great listen
A couple good tracks ('Alone, Together,' and pieces of a few others) but a pretty boring record overall. Good vocal performances can't save stale songwriting.
Scooby doo kkkk
1. Is This It - “We’re not enemies, we just disagree”; an interesting start to the album, sounds similar to what would be found closer to the end of most albums. Reminds me a lot of a conclusion, with the repetition of “is this it?” sounding so weary- so it being the starting track is different. 7/10 2. The Modern Age - “Start to pretend, stop pretending,” (isn’t that so real!!). Feels like the summer of 2020, not much else to say. Similar to “Everybody Talks” by Neon Trees. 6.5/10 3. Soma - It’s alright. Having no personal experiences with drug addiction (Is that what he’s talking about?) I didn’t personally connect. 5/10 4. Barely Legal - “I should’ve worked much harder, I should’ve just not bothered,” (basically me?). I really like the conflict in the singer’s actions in this song. Plus the key change in the 2nd verse makes the song memorable. 7/10 5. Someday - “Promises, they break before they’re made,” I’ve actually heard this before!! Like the guitar and bass in this song. 6.5/10 6. Alone, Together - “He knows it’s justified to kill to survive / He then, in dollars, makes more dead than alive,” My favourite song on the album!! Has a more gritty and different sound compared to the rest of the songs on this album which I find a little plain. First guitar solo of the album too? Went hard. 8/10 7. Last Nite - Bit of a whimsy switch up after Alone, Together. It’s a nice song, don’t get me wrong, just not wholly memorable. 6/10 8. Hard To Explain - “I say the right thing but act the wrong way,” I like this song - again, a bit of a switch up in tone/key compared to the rest of the songs and style of singing, which i def prefer! A nice song, especially the end of each chorus where the singing speeds up. 6.5/10 9. New York City Cops - “Darling, I’m somewhere in between,” This reminded me that The Strokes are american (they feel like they should be british…). Like the bass line in this song even tho it simple. Sometimes traditional is best!! 6.5/10 10. Trying Your Luck - Can’t say much negative about this song; was surprised to see its C major key, it feels pretty minor, especially the whole “No harm, he’s armed(…)” bit - that’s js the way that it’s sung though I think, which i think is one of the best bits about the song. 7/10 11. Take It Or Leave It - Feels like this should be swapped with the opening track, but it makes the album more unique this way. The song is ok, nothing too interesting for my personal taste, apart from the “He’s gonna let you down (…) gonna win someday.” - this bit was a nice change from the rest of the song. Plus, 2nd guitar solo of the album!! Can’t go wrong. 6.5/10 Overall: This album was inoffensive. Not my personal music taste, I think - I do love indie music, but for me this album felt very same-y, with my highlights being Alone, Together and Barely Legal mostly because they escaped the framework that seems to make up most of the songs on this album. That said I can see why people would like this album - it’s definitely not bad. Overall rating: 6.5/10
No geral o album é gostoso de ouvir, uma vibezinha muito boa, eu gostei bastante das músicas ~Is This It, Barely Legal e Last Nite~ as outras são boas mas não me deram a vontade de salvar pra ouvir depois, porém no geral é um album bom e se aparecer qlqr música dele em uma playlist aleatória eu não passo :)
I could easily listen to this on a drive to work.
This indie band signature sound it present from the first chord to the last. The distinctive industrial and boppy guitar riffs give this album a major lift where variance and comprehensible lyrics kind of falter. Their hits are great, but their songs all sound alike to the point where they blend one track to the next. Without reading the lyrics, I genuinely don’t know what most of the songs are about, though I think the through line is about an unhappy relationship(s). Not a bad album by any means, but I’ll probably stick to their hit songs and consider that enough.
It wasn’t what I would usually listen to, but it was nice & I liked almost all of the songs. Good background music for doing BA’s
I think this album is ok it's not mind-blowing to me but I do enjoy the songs and it's a nice easy listen.
this album feels like a one long song
boring
A bit monotonous at times but I enjoyed most of the songs.
