Reviews (page 9 of 14)

I only knew the song, Reptilia, by The Strokes - so this was a great way to get into a new band. This is a really strong album where pretty much every song is good to great. Most of the songs are played with high energy and passion. There is a degree of "sameness" to many songs, but they are played with gusto that makes me not mind after awhile. My favorite tracks: The Modern Age, Barely Legal, Last Nite, Take It Or Leave It, and Alone Together (my favorite song on the album).

I wonder how many of the mix CDs I’ve ever made include “Last Nite” (hint: it’s a lot). I liked them 20+ years ago and think the album still holds up today.

Pretty good stuff. Reading about how it was recorded was interesting. I remember them on SNL. Somewhat remind me of The Jam, who didn’t get US recognition like this group did. Good job, lads

Very good

Goed album om de afwas op te doen

Dare I say a 5? I grew up with Someday from mlb2k8, the other famous song is of course famous, but the rest was pretty new. While it all had a similar tone, it was varied enough to not bore me and make me wanna listen more. This may be in rotation

The Brits sure as hell know how to make hits. An album perfect for a summer roadtrip

Good early 2000's indie rock. Definitely worth another listen.

Cooler version of the music I listened to in high school.

This was definitely what rock music was like between 2000 and 1990, from the vocals and the array of music on the album with only one song becoming a staple. It had a few songs I could go without hearing them again, but that doesnt make the conviction the artist had any less real!

This band is weird. I tend to enjoy their songs, but at the same time all of their songs sound like they were ripped off from more popular songs. Setting that aside, I find the singer's voice oddly compelling. They sound pretty good as a band. This album was hailed as a revitalization of rock when it came out, yet it ultimately ended up being more of a last hurrah. Regardless, this album has aged a lot better than much of the rock being made in the early 2000s. The production being excellent probably has something to do with that 4/5

Not too bad

Better than I expected, some familiar songs

This was such a fun listen! Released in the beginning of the garage rock revival it really was the start of 00s rock sound. I was a bit too young yet to be swept away by it (i was 10) so it is not with too much nostalgia I listen to this. I still think this album holds up really well. The lo-fi mixing might feel a bit dated but the riffs and catchiness of the songs are still there. "Someday" and especially "Last Nite" are decade defining songs but I really enjoyed the rest of the album as well. It can hold it's own through all its tracks and does not outstay its welcome. A few duds (looking at you "New York City Cops") and that I held some similar records in higher regards prevents from getting this a 5.

I have not heard this album before and I only know of The Strokes by name. I was a bit apprehensive about listening as I thought their genre would be too left field for my taste but I was pleasantly surprised. I found myself liking all of their songs in some way. A few songs I would like to mention are: Barely Legal, Soma, and Alone, Together (which I really like the instrumental from). I would say my least favourite song on the album is the title track, Is This It. The songs are very short in length with primarily vocals and only a few guitar solos (which were good). I will definitely listen to this album again; I just have to find a playlist to put it in.

This be the mood.

Btw, are we all getting a kick outta the listener who keeps plagiarizing - usually just wholesale stealing - reviews from all music.com?

Enjoyed their sound but don’t think I could distinguish the Strokes from a dozen other bands

Pleased to report that this thing holds up remarkably well. There's an argument to be made that not only was (is) it worth all the hype, but also the greatest garage rock album ever. Sometimes it sounds like a more polished version of The Ramones. Oddly enough, the only track that doesn't grab me is the opening song. The freaking title track, a stiff that leads off an amazing album. For all the press and hype this thing got upon release, you'd think someone would have suggested a better sequencing of the songs. Bonus points for the dude who wrote and recorded "It Never Rains In Southern California" having a son who brought thunder to The Strokes.

Great early aughts rock before metal/hard rock took hold. Recommended!

Enjoyable first listen. 8/10

uhhh w indie album very good julian casablancas sounds like hes singing into a bread box 👍

Solid album with some recognisable tunes.

Every song sounds the sa-(gets pummeled by rocks) Most songs sound the same, but it's a really good sound that I enjoy, so it's fine. This isn't my favorite Strokes album though - I think both "The New Abnormal" and "Room on Fire" have a tighter sound.. But I can't really hate on the quintessential indie rock album of the early 2000s.

A hyped album that was good. Overloved by the British music media but it does everything right. Songs, production, stripped back playing. Strong

I haven´t listening this album in a while. It was joy to my ears

I remember buying this and listening to it a pretty fair amount when it was first released. I enjoyed it back then and I enjoy it now. Back in 2001 I saw them perform in Lawrence, Kansas, shortly after this was released. It was a disappointing show. The singer was pretty drunk or something, and was sloppy enough to where other people in the band were visibly frustrated with them.

I should have some cynical take on this album, and I can say that of the new Rock revival bands The Strokes are not my favorite (that would be TV On the Radio) but this is an undeniable classic full of great throwback tunes. I will say I’m very happy the version I heard doesn’t have this cover.

Liked it alot in high school but didn't really grab me past the initial nostalgia on this relisten. I'll average out the 5 stars high school Eric would give this with the 3 stars 40 year old Eric gives this...4 stars

Catchy songs, nice voice. I liked it 4/5 Favorites: Someday, Last Nite

It was pretty good throughout, don’t understand the complete critical love bust last nite is a banger.

Not bad but not particularly remarkable overall. Last Nite bumps it up to a 4 for me though.

Really good album , I had already listened to this before but was definitely happy to have a proper relisten

It's good

forgot how many incredible tracks were on this record, the sounds is unmistakeable however it is a bit samey

TheStrokes's debut album presented a unique sound with the jangly guitar riffs and iconic vocals of Julian Casablancas. Each song has energy and it is a fun listen to get through.

I think it's pedestrian yet somehow undeniable at the same time!

I enjoyed this album and will be listening to it again! I have a few friends who love The Strokes but I'm not sure why I never got into them! I think I probably would have loved them more back in the early naughties, but still good now :) Strokiest Track: Alone together

It's good, but I feel like a lot if the hype around it is of the "you had to be there" variety, because I personally don't get it.

Another one I'm very familiar with. And a frankly brilliant album, for what it is. It's cohesive and driven. Some of the songs are quite fun. It was part of revival in music, so has a huge part in rock history. Do I enjoy it? Yeah. Is it a masterpiece that moves me? Not really. A great candidate for 4/5 stars.

Immediately transported me to Lansdowne St, when it was still a bit gritty.

Lyrics Pros: The lyrics are often praised for their simplicity and relatability, capturing the essence of youthful angst and urban life [1]. Clever wordplay and catchy phrases contribute to the album's memorability. Cons: Some critics argue that the lyrics lack profound depth, bordering on superficiality. Music Pros: The Strokes' musical prowess is evident in the album's tight instrumentation and Julian Casablancas' distinctive vocals. Catchy guitar riffs, dynamic drumming, and basslines create an infectious groove. Cons: Some tracks may sound sonically similar, leading to a lack of diversity in the overall musical landscape. Production Pros: Gordon Raphael's production style embraces a lo-fi aesthetic, enhancing the garage rock authenticity. The stripped-down production emphasizes the band's raw talent. Cons: The lo-fi approach might not appeal to those seeking a more polished sound. Themes Pros: "Is This It" explores themes of disillusionment, romance, and urban life, resonating with a generation navigating the challenges of early adulthood. Cons: Some argue that the thematic content lacks innovation compared to other albums of the time. Influence Pros: The album significantly influenced the garage rock revival of the early 2000s, inspiring a new wave of bands. It played a role in shaping the sound of indie rock for years to come. Cons: The immense influence may overshadow the album's individuality for some listeners. In conclusion, "Is This It" remains a landmark album that captures the zeitgeist of its era. Its strengths lie in its simplicity, energetic music, and lasting impact on the music landscape. While some criticize its lyrical depth and sonic diversity, these factors are minor compared to the album's overall significance in the evolution of rock music.

THE premier rich kid rock album, lol.

I’ve had Last Nite stuck in my head since I saw this was the album

Undoubtedly highly influential to bands that in the end turned out more exciting that The Strokes themselves. Is This It isn’t quite the bomb I remembered it as - even though it is really effective. The songwriting is tight, the instruments even tighter… I guess, when all is said and done, I just don’t really have a special thing for Casablancas.

I remember when this album came out. It sounded pretty different to anything else that was out of the time. Re-listening to it brought back some memories. Enjoyable ones!

Hace años que escucho este album: nepotism done right. Quien pudiera ser tan cool como los Strokes y su primer album

Very catchy! Steady rhythms, very enjoyable guitar and bass sound. My favourites are Hard to Explain and Last Nite.

Incredibly fun, and I really liked the drums.

A nostalgia bomb. Very solid indie/alt rock vibes all around.

such a brilliant energy-fueled joyous album, it's sad that the strokes haven't really advanced musically from this but oh well because this is such a specific sound for a specific time and place, a specific generation that i can't really fault it that much. although apparently the woman whose bum is on the album cover didn't consent to her bum being on the album cover which is a bit morally dodgy. anyway back to the music. this is an album for sweaty teenage parties. dark rooms and warm air. thinking you're really cool with your new short black dress. eyeliner and hairspray and t shirts with bands on that you think are really cool even though you've only listened to a few songs. the lyrics are needy, whiny. made me happy to listen to this the whole way through!

This was pretty! And rocked too.

Nothing wrong with it. Glad I listened. But also nothing that stuck out to me??

It was really good. But in that kind of way that mames for good background music. But the kind you actually want playing as you're doing something elss rather than because its forgettable or something like that

My only real exposure to the strokes was through Pandora, where they filled in soundspace just fine, but didn't excite me all that much. Looking at that release date, though... Did some quick wikipedia'ing, and yeah it's looking like this one might have been at the same level as MGMT *Oracular Spectacular* in terms of "hey all this other shit you were listening to came from specifically this". "Post-punk revival", as they call it, apparently. Like I like some Killers, I like Franz Ferdinand, those bands probably don't come out sounding like that without this having come first. So definitely respect where it's due

Smooth album with plenty of 2000's reverb, many nostalgia points and would gladly listen again.

Very influenced by the Velvet Underground

Is This It // Someday // Alone, Together // Last Nite // Hard To Explain //

Nah not really my style but some sounds was fine

Perfect

Great album, really enjoyed re-listening to it, as would have been my era growing up.

Well I mean yeah. It’s awesome.

The sound and music of The Strokes has always been a favorite of mine.

Album holds up.

4.4. I originally had this a 5 star but I ended up listening to the same song 3 times in a row and didn't really notice. So maybe is a bit repetitive. Band is super tight. I noticed that the bass lines and/or guitar riffs followed the vocals quite a bit which should be used in moderation but most of instrumentation is fairly original and interesting. Imagine being Julian Casablancas, lead singer in a great rock band, your dad owning a modeling agency, not too shitty.

Great. Almost a 5 for me

V v nice

Crazy how relevant and great this still sounds. 2000s rock! What a time to be alive!

Boa música, pra preparar pra estrela do álbum. Solo simples mas bem animado, fecha bem legal a música. 7.

No skips! I didn't have this cd, but I had Room on Fire, I think my brother had this one. I didn't know about the original cover, only the yellow and blue one! Someday remains an unimpeachable bop, I think Last Nite is actually my least favorite song on the album and it's still great. Is this it and Soma really stood out to me today. The story about NYC Cops is wild.

I'd been meaning to listen to the Strokes for a while now and this daily album challenge was a good way to get exposure to some new stuff. With this album, I particularly like the bass and some of the drum beats. There's a nice, mellow kind of rhythm to the overall album I enjoy.

4.3/5 Very solid album, some of it feels kind of same-y though. Best track: Someday

I love this album. When this came out in 2001 it had the energy of the punk rock that I loved at that time, without being pop punk. It was just really catchy rock music with great hooks and a cool aesthetic. Indie rock/power pop I guess, but whatever its called I like it. This always felt underground to me, so its interesting to see them now headlining festivals. I never really paid much attention to their later albums, but they obviously have remained popular despite never being household names. Regardless, this album is great and definitely one of the best rock records of the the 00s.

Like it, seems like a classic

Great energy. Banger from beginning to end. Impossible not to bop along with.

It’s a cool record, with a couple of very strong songs. Found it a bit repetitive, though.

Good album - not convinced by all the lyrics, but great sound.

I love the Strokes and I love this album. I just think it's a little one-dimensional at times. Like 5/10 songs are all-timers but the others are only decent. It was a great start, though, and I think the strokes were able to build off of this start in later albums to really blossom into a powerhouse of a band

Love a few of the songs last night is overplayed, but is a fantastic song take it or leave it. It’s probably my favorite because it makes me dance.

First of all, this album cover really threw me for a loop because I knew the US cover way back when. After that got sorted, I was excited to revisit this after not having listened to it in ages. It definitely still holds up and is a really strong debut album! I guess it just isn’t really my taste anymore, but still a fun listen.

Well, isn't this just the bouncy ball of fun!? Never heard it before but glad I got the chance today. A definite keeper.

Favourite songs: Last Nite, Someday, Hard to Explain, The Modern Age, Barely Legal New York City Cops Least favourite songs: Is This It 4/5

I remember this album in heavy rotation when I was younger. It had a raw garage sound while being polished at the same time. Soma, Someday, and Last Night are among the best tracks. Overall a great album from the early 2000s.

It's a solid album, I admit I have overlistened to it so it doesn't slap like it used to but I still think it warrants a 4/5

4 An album I slept on for years because I didn’t like the song Last Nite, and man, was I missing out - this was great. You could definitely point to a lot of it as sounding the same, but when you have indie rock with pop sensibility down to a science like these guys do here, you earn that right - at no point did I ever want or feel like this album needed to steer in a different direction. And despite that, I still felt like each song did a sufficient job of establishing its own identity, with Someday, Hard to Explain, The Modern Age, and the closing track Take It or Leave It jumping out to me as immediate favorites (I would also recommend checking out New York City Cops, a song that was removed from the American release last minute due to the events of 9/11 happening weeks before). It really doesn’t feel like this album should work as well as it does given its simple, compact style of production, but somehow that adds to its indie charm, and in doing so, probably redefined the genre for the decade ahead. There’s a pretty distinct difference in the sound between 90s and 00s alternative rock, and for me, I think this album denotes that dividing line. While I’d still walk away from this saying that Last Nite is my least favorite track, I can say I developed an appreciation for everything here and that I’m interested to check out more of their stuff.

Someday (5) and Last night (7) bangers

It was a really good album. A few classics with a few good new songs for me. It was short and straight to the point.

Entertaining, brings back memories 🦭 Highlight: New York City Cops

This is not it, but it's getting close

Album #35 Do you like garage rock? Do you like trust fund kids sounding grimey? Then I have the album for you! In all honesty, I enjoy this album, and its follow-up. It's nothing incredible, just straight, dirty rock and roll which was released during the end of the Nu-Metal days. The album is short and sweet, so it doesn't have time to grow stale. 3.5* rounded up to 4*. 4*

Love this album. Sonmanyngreatbsongs.

Just fantastic, I own this album and have listened to it hundreds of time. Felt special from the first listen, fresh and different, great guitar and vocals, pared back and urgent. And I'm sure then influenced bands like the Arctic Monkeys later

Barely Legal Someday Last Nite Basically every song is a classic

4/5. I was already a casual fan of the Strokes, but this made me appreciate them even more.

Not a bad album, I just don't get the hype as I feel it is pretty weak compared to some of the band's other albums. Even for a debut album, I must admit I was never really impressed by Is This It. It might have something to do with the fact that I have always been a great fan of The Killers' Hot Fuzz, ITI's direct rival, which is, IMHO, far superior on every aspect. Still, ITI is a good listen.

charmingly awful vocals with new york city cops - 4 with when it started - 4.5

I love The Strokes and this is a fantastic album. Catchy, reverent, weird, and eccentric. This is rock and roll.

odličan album, al nekako mi nije za peticu....još.

barely legal?

Never realized this album is only 35 min long, love me some good short songs. But yeah timeless sounds imo, catchy, and overall great listen.

I only finished the album on my third listen. Good indie but I don't understand all the hype. I love 2000s indie rock, and thus I know I should appreciate that this album paved the way for that entire genre, but I just can't get it. It's fairly good, especially the second half, but it's not amazing. Maybe, in order to get this, I should have been young in 2001. 7/10.

One of the best new rock albums

8 goed album

This album was pretty good. Musically it reminds me of the white stripes or even Velvet Underground. The songs are all short and fast. Is it me or is the song When it Started mixed at a way higher level than everything else on this album? Anyway, they are a tight little band with the distinct sound. That’s fun to listen to.

What a surprise! Really liked it!

LASSSSSTTTNNITTTTEEEE

Starts with the weakest song and then the whole thing just becomes better and better. 4.5?

Good stuff

I saw The Strokes back in the day at Reading Festival. They were playing on one of the smaller stages in a tent and they'd just broken with this album. Absolutely packed, nearly killed me. Excellent debut, but it is a bit samey.

Catchy guitar pop, a bit heavy on teenage angst but mostly enjoyable to listen.

this was good! bass was probably the MVP of the album. probably won’t revisit any tracks though

chill vibes, solid album overall.

J'ai un faible pour le son des Strokes. Du bon rock post-punk soft, mais pas tant non plus. Plus 3.5 que 4, mais on est généreux aujourd'hui.

Very fun very cool

Very good just held back on the 5

one of my favorite albums by the strokes, very consistent throughout

If I had a nickel for every time this website generated me an album with connections to 9/11, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.

I first read about the Strokes and I think I saw them on SNL before hearing the album, I wanted to not like it. They seemed to be a group of rich, spoiled, privileged-looking white boys who somehow weaseled a record contract and I doubted they would produce authentic rock 'n' roll, especially with a lead singer with a name like, Julian Casablancas. Their debut album, Is This It...is it! A surprisingly excellent record that blows most of my theory away. A great collection of songs that are catchy and ear-pleasing without the pretentiousness and manufactured sound I was half expecting. There was lots of really good music released in the early 2000's and this one stands out as one of the best and listening again over twenty years later, it's as good as I remember. Ha, so much for first impressions.

Dead ringer for this list. Literally everyone wanted to copy them for 2-3 years

An LP which exudes effortless lo-fi cool. Julian’s vocals + the great guitar harmonies all wrapped up in warm, fuzzy production makes simple lyrics, instrumentation, and overall tracks feel massive from a sonic standpoint. Not a whole lot of melodic variation going on, but when the core sound and narrative are so locked in that’s hardly an issue.

Ihan kuin olisi sama biisi 11 kertaan, vähän eri variaatioin. Mutta se silti toimii, indietanssibileet!

Love the Strokes! Makes me want to listen to the new abnormal.

Just a very solid rock album that I would listen to any day of the week. Last Nite and Someday are classics

This album is very good All tracks on this album are amazing The instruments fit so well together and the vocals make this album a masterpiece. All topics and themes make up the album and the strokes in general and how they present them. Which is always amazing to hear because with all tracks it's something new to listen to and doesn't get repetitive at all. I love this album and the strikes in general so I will be coming back to it.

Genres: Indie rock, garage rock revival, post-punk revival Formed: New York City in 1998 Run time: 11 songs, 36 min, 28 sec It's a great album. I really liked a couple of tracks and the others are OK. It’s not a particularly long album as most of the tracks average around 3 minutes duration. They are described as rock but nothing heavy. The up-beat tempo gives it a pop feel. They are obviously a very well liked and much played group. The least played track on the album has over 25M plays on Spotify. The most popular tracks have 100M, 300M, and nearly 500M plays. Will I listen to the album again? I’ve played it several times, and enjoyed “Someday" and “Last Night”., but the rest isn’t growing on me, so no. I will give a “Best of…” a try. My Rating: ****

Ohhhhh the strokes... this is quintessential 🤩

Guitar Hero! Someday en Last Nite goede tracks 👌

Classic album, top to bottom with iconic songs and sounds. Really hits a nice mood Favorites: Is This It, Last Nite, Someday, Hard to Explain

Old favorite. Almost the perfect album.

Awesome how garage-y it is. Sounds like it was recorded at home, not in a studio

I hated this when it came out. But damn it grew on me. Hadn't listened to it in years before today. And while every song does sound the same, the melodies are indelible. Great stuff, but maybe just shy of 5 territory for me. Still, lots of fun.

Solid album, my only issue with it is at times it can be kinda predictable. Still really good garage/indie rock. A lot of good songs with my favorites being "Someday", "Is This It", "Last Night", "Take It Or Leave It" and "Hard to Explain". This album instantly make me think of white kids from a specific suburb in the city I grew up in that I went to school with because for some reason. The album just screams to me "I'm a white kid that grew up in a house with a 2 story house with a big back yard and a fully finished basement and maybe a pool" but that might just be my experience. Overall though 8.5/10.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Definitely a retro feel to this album, shades of Velvet Underground, with short, punchy indie pop songs.

straight car seat headrest. good album tho. 4.5

I said, JUST TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT !!! and TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT !!! and TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT !!! and TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT !!! oh, just TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT !!! and TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT !!! oh, TAKE IT !!!

good album but i dont think it clicked with me all the way. still a nice listen

This is a really good album

Love this album. Definitely important and good.

Reinventing garage rock? Yeahh

Each song on this album was a standalone banger-I had zero issue with and wouldn't skip any of them. However, there needs to be distinction within albums, and everything here kind of became conflated with each other. To be honest, even if some of the songs sounded differently, I still don't think I would've given it 5. I did really like "Barely Legal" and "Take It Or Leave It".

Liked all the songs but didn’t love too many. Soma, when it started, and hard to explain were my favorites. This doesn’t get a 5 because of its “give me the same thing but different!” Attitude throughout, I guess you could say that’s a good thing in that it all works together but that also bores me at a certain point. And holy overplayed batman, the strokes are more common than a false positive these days.

Nice little alternative album. It's something you can dance to, but it also has solid guitar and lyrics and an overall interesting sound.

I quite like The Strokes, but also feel they may be the most overrated band of all time at the same time. I feel this album is just an above average Indie staple, nothing like the era defining masterpiece most exalt it as. 4/5

Loved this back in the day. And it still stands up. But it is more monotonous than I recall.

Legendary. Shame about the Puritanical US version cover, but the rock is indisputable. 4 stars.

Fuck yeah. Nonstop quavers never sounded so good.

Great rock record. All the songs sounds the same and it's awesome.

The kind of album that in theory, has nothing special to offer, but in practice, is totally magical. I can't say why it's good, but it is!

What a way to kick off the millennium. Undeniable heaters

Fun album, more songs I recognized than I thought.

I liked this album. This is the album that their big hit 'Last Night' comes from. Overall a fun, casual listen.

very good job with the album, this good music and it was nice to cook chili to

Yes 4.5/5

It's good. Indie predecessor but no saves

Þetta er drullufín plata. Góð stemming.

Early 2000s punk rock. Feels like an early iPod commercial, haha. Some strong songs, but overall album is kind of one-note. Just not my genre, I suppose.

Excellent album.

Easy 4 - great record and a lot of personal nostalgia for me. The Strokes were ultimately a bit of a let down for me - I expected them to be more serious and committed I guess. The big tracks from this one (Is This It?, Last Nite, Someday, New York City Cops) are all still great. The final track Take It Or Leave It is still a banger hands down. Overall the aesthetic of the record is spoiled a bit by the scratchy recording of the vocal - the effect gets a bit thin.

Vocals recorded in the 1940s. Like this album.

Still sounds cool

Trots all hajp. Det var och är ett riktigt bra musikalbum.

Minimalist, young person energy driven punk-ish album. On top of that are such delicious basslines. This is quite hot.

I'm biased towards this kind of music so I had to rate it high regardless of how good it actually is <3 favorite tracks are Soma and someday

Awesome album. When they came on the scene they were huge. They were in the same sentences with The Beatles. No stinkers on this album.

One of my favourite groups, and this, their first album paves the way for another 5 excellent albums. I like their sound, listened to the album in full with no skips, every track was listenable, some better than others, but none worthy of a part way skip. Their latest album, The New Abnormal, is worth a listen, with my favourite track The Adults Are Talking

One of those you played to death back when it was released then put away. Good to have it back out dgain

This is it. The album to define the new millennium. The Strokes signaled the new wave of rock bands and they were capital-C Cool. Julian Casablancas is to blame. His presentation and songwriting is seemingly effortless with his devil-may-care attitude, it's irresistible. Production that learns from the darker, grittier aspects of grunge while brightening up the sound a bit and spot cleaning for a distinct mix. The Strokes have effectively pulled us out of the 90's. For a long time, I never clicked with This Is It. For whatever reason, it wasn't flashy or interesting or impressive to me. Turns out, it didn't need to be any of those things: It's just damn good. It's the perfect tones and simple grooves. It doesn't need more than a good riff and Casablancas' million-dollar vocals. 11 great songs. None of them over 4 minutes. You've got a half hour of pure excellence. I am consistently impressed with how well-crafted this album is. This is it.

I always think I'm going to like The Strokes more than I end up doing. I think I confuse them with The Shins? Either way, this album is good. Great even. It's just not as good as I think it is. BUT THAT COVER MADE ME UNCOMFORTABLE I AM GOING TO CALL MY LOCAL GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE ABOUT IT

Amazing indie rock record! Very anthemic songwriting with great guitar leads. I'm not really that much in the vocals, but musically this is top notch! Key tracks: Is This It, The Modern Age, Soma, Barely Legal, Someday,, Last Nite, Hard To Explain, Trying Your Luck, Take It Or Leave It. 8,5 out of 10

Energetic and memorable. Worth revisiting.

you could tell me most of these songs were released this year and i would probably believe you. insanely influential and ahead of its time.

Great intro to punk pop and life around 2001.

A bunch of trust fund kids shouldn’t be able to make music this rough and rebellious, but somehow they hit the sweet spot. New York City Cops kicks ass.

Some albums just take you back.

classic 2000s

A classic.

9/10 Love The Strokes

I like this. I wasn't quite sure at first, but it's good stuff.

I encountered this album a number of years ago, and purchased it before I had access to a music streaming service. I haven't listened to it often enough apparently to recognize all the songs, but I do recognize and like many of them. Glad to have this emerge from the fog of the past as I very much enjoy this album!

fadinho tri, das antiga já

Hace mucho que no lo escuchaba :')

Feels overproduced to sound live, catchy and infectious the more you listen

Heerlijk. album vol bangers, doet me beetje denken aan eerste album van artic monkeys

This is a really tidy, really tight 35 minute album. Everyone knows Last Nite, I didn't know anything else other than that and Someday, and really enjoyed this. Another 4/5 (not sure I've given 2 in a row before!), missing a bit of variety that might lift it up to a 5 but it's really good 2000s guitar music and clearly an inspiration for a lot that came after it in the mid-00s.

Reminds me of college days. good times but i didn't like this back then. love it now

I enjoyed this album a lot, especially the vocals.

classic

Album fucking rules. Favorite track: Alone, Together

The whole is better than some of its parts. A nice nifty album that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Great rocker. Enjoy putting this on to rock out.

Not as memorable as I remembered it to be, but still a solid debut. I never noticed that the whole record goes just for about 35 minutes!!! Back in the day it felt longer. Although I personally much prefer Room On Fire, Is This It will always have a soft spot in my heart for being one of the records that introduced me to garage rock.

Instant classic Fav: someday, is this it

This was a close one. Nostalgia gives bonus to 4.

Very good, definitely a few stand out songs and a few meh ones. Not particularly consistent but very good overall.

This is almost a 5 for me if you put it in the context of 2001 — a year when Nickleback, Kid Rock, and Creed all and top 25 albums. Being in high school at the time, this was a first sign that music was going to get better.

4/5. Just a great pop album. Some skippable songs but last nite and someday are classics. Recommended for all.

Most of what makes this album so special is that "no fucks given" attitude that so much of the NYC art scene breeds. 4.5/5

There's a lot of sameness all the way through this album, but I still really enjoyed it. No real "wow" moments, but it was still a step above.

Much better than expected. This album kind of sneaked by me in the early 2000s and I never heard it other than their radio hits, which I always enjoyed. This album was pretty darn good and I'm disappointed in myself for not listening to it before now.

The most popular album I've heard yet.

Favourite song: Someday One for the karaoke: Last Night One for the car: Hard To Explain Classic

Good good good

This band completely missed my radar duri g their early days, but I really like their sound. A notch above the rest of the early 2000s rock bands that all kinda sound similar. But this was totally enjoyable start to finish.

Indie garage rock. Un megahit. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Fun, catchy rock 'n roll. Didn't realize how many songs on this album I was already familiar with. New York City Cops bangs. Will give 4 stars because I'm having fun and I like simple rock 'n roll despite that these are New York rich kids making a commercial version of the kind of music created by punks and legit bohemians at CBGBs in the 70's

What an iconic album.

A bit same but I think this captures the early 2000s zeitgeist well. There are at least two amazing songs on this one.

I think I came across Last Nite on a compilation CD that came free with a magazine, and was so taken with it that I got a copy of this album & have always loved it. It still sounds fresh to me. The title track is one of the great openings to any album. I love the way the song opens, and, in fact, so many of these songs have great openings, that inevitably suck you in. No point selecting favourites here, I love them all.

Fun to listen to. Vocals got a bit annoying after a while but overall very enjoyable.

Very solid and definitely love the Strokes early stuff

Combination of somewhat simple yet catchy guitar riffs with intensive and often distorted Julian's vocals work very well. Title song and Soma stood out.

I love The Strokes. My first purchase at the Hollywood Amoeba store was this vinyl. I love this album honestly 9/10

Loving “Is This It” and “Soma”. Pretty happy with the rest as well.

This is a great album but I still don’t think it is as groundbreaking or important as many say it is. The vocals on many songs become grating because of the effects added to his voice. The upbeat songs are bangers but the rest becomes muddled and kind of boring.

Good listen all the way through

This was a bright spark amongst a lot of dross on release. Still got a decent energy to it, but perhaps seemed better than it was due to lack of anything much else worth listening to at the time. Still enjoyed its chugging along today.

Very good, love the various Sonority that makes it less of a generic rock album... Exactly what I would expect from the strokes

Perfect use of distortion. Best track: Last Nite

Flott, indírokk? Einn smellur.

Enjoyed this, even not being a Strokes fan. Love the guitar work and the driving rhythms.

Best Song: Last Nite. Sure, it's the most famous from the album, but it feels justified here. The way, as the song progresses, the line "Last Nite" starts to feel like it's being torn out of him. A truly melancholy dance song. Worst Song: Take It Or Leave It. I dig the vocals here, but the instrumentals seem to be turned too quiet, and don't quite match the vocal intensity. Overall: This is what alt rock should be. Musically talented, with this unique sound that doesn't fit the more classic rock sound. That raw, slightly degraded audio quality, particular on the vocals, gives the whole album a garage feel. Each song is as short as it needs to be, and full of hooks.

4/5 Great album. Thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s vibe. This was the first one of these I would say I needed to listen to before I died.

I remember when The Modern Age EP came out it went through the college town I lived in like wildfire. By the time this album was released we were in a fever pitch of excitement, and, when they finally came through on tour, it seemed like the whole town had a collective orgasm. I think Julian Casablancas described it really well when he said they sound like a band from the past who took a time machine to the future to make a record. More specifically they sound like a New Wave Velvet Underground to me. Similar to many other bands of the era (White Stripes, et al.), they weren't doing anything radically new per se, just putting the pieces together in a new and novel order. Like an irresistible sort of processed food that has refined their formula to become completely addictive. The hype surrounding them was enormous. So big that it was inevitably unsustainable. After they came through on tour and we all had our collective orgasm on that one night stand, it never felt quite the same again. At the time I was convinced the album title was a reference specifically to the impossible-to-live-up-to hype that surrounded them and I thought it was quite a clever way to address it. Is This It? Indeed it really was that simple. But man they really caught lightning in a bottle here and I was deliriously giddy being swept up in Strokes mania.

takes some time to really get into it

披头士类型的复古轻快摇滚

Great album, very balanced and probably one of their best

No filler, all good upbeat songs. Slightly repetitive, but that it kind of the style of the era and the band.

A lot to say about this record. It obviously held a prominent spot in my life when It was released when I was a 17 year old. I owned it and played it constantly just like everyone else I knew. It made an indelible mark on that time of my life. I probably have not listened to the full record in 20 years now. It still sounds great, both from just a straight pop pseudo Lou Reed sound and from a production standpoint. I'm wringing my hands over all of the knee-jerk bullshit reactionary decisions to 9/11. I fully remember the album art change, whatever that's fine. American's and their puritanical bullshit. But the removal of "New York City Cops" for only the US CD version is just maddening dumb. It's especially dumb that this is the only version the change was made on. The US Vinyl and every single international release contained the correct original track listing. However, for some reason the US CD version has seemingly become the definitive version as it's what all the streaming services carry. Just fucking sickening.

Funnily enough I hadn't heard this Strokes album out of their other ones, so it's a trip hearing how this is their best one. I think it's a really fun listen though I've grown to like their other works more. Still, I wanna come back to this sometime.

Many hits I already knew, a solid album to listen from beginning to end

At once gritty and urbane, the record does pretty well in living up to considerable hype. One could make a case it's all an algorithm (plus, maybe, a hologram) of VU updated to early oughts. Three great songs on the back side, more than make up for the samey effect on first side. Remains solid and enjoyable which is more than can be said of many other a next big thing.

This is good, I don’t get the rapturous reception it received but it’s good

Great album.

Love it

Svaret på sidners dilemma… en fyra

Obviously a modern classic, essential listening, must hear before you die etc. etc. I personally prefer Room On Fire

Damn good album from beginning to end

LOVEEE the vibe

Cool cat vibes

Good album! Fun tunes.

Forgot how much I loved this album. Still a good one

A great rock album! Straight forward, classic guitar tones, lots of energy and fun!

Listened to at some point 4.5/5 Favorite song: last nite I love the early 2000s and this song was SUCH a bop

Solid modern classic rock album.

This album is refreshing and repetitive in the same proportion. I enjoyed it, and I'm annoyed by the similar songs around the whole thing. Overall, from my perspective, this is an excellent Strokes' album, but it's far from their best.

The Strokes were the freshest thing to happen to the early noughties, and after a few albums I thought that's where they left it..... but apparently they're still going and just not particularly relevant any more. Anyway back to this album, spiky, jangly, great style, great attitude......naughty cover art. It was great!

Fine album that I've liked since it was released. Lots of hi-lights; Last Night, New York City Cops and my favorite Take it or Leave it. A really strong debut album. 4.5 🌟

I liked this one. It was pretty interesting how it simultaneously sounds reminiscent of old-school garage rock and of modern day alternative rock - despite falling in between the two eras. Actually a 3.5, but rounding up because I like it better than the previous two 3's.

Crazy, just a couple days ago I was telling some people how I don't know any Strokes songs (beside Reptilia) and realized I probably need to listen to their stuff a bit more. Excellent timing. I really enjoyed this album, more than I thought I would. I didn't find much enjoyment in some of their newer albums I've heard, but this one is strong. Very fun little rock album here, some nice melodies. Favorite tracks: Someday, Alone Together, Last Nite. Album art: There's two for this one, the apparent naked woman profile (though if Ebaum's World taught me anything, that could be an armpit), and the yellow and blue intricate art one. I don't know which is more iconic, I've personally seen both enough that I thought they were two different albums. I think I prefer the US release, the blue and yellow one. The colors and the design just pop, much more so than a black and white hip. 4/5

Fun album that races along. Two hits (Last Nite and Someday) that I knew already, but a couple of new discoveries here too.

This sounds a lot thinner to me than it once did - I remember hearing this for the first time and it was like a life preserver in a sea of shit. But some very simple, catchy rock, sort of on the order of The Cars, maybe. It cut through everything else that was going on and think what was going on was sort of a Limp Bizkit / Boyband / Sleaze techno phase. So anyway, this was better than that. Still very listenable - I don't know if there's a track on here that doesn't hook me at one point or another. But I have no idea what this guy is singing about, so... I'll still give it 4 stars because I'd listen all the way through.

Very nice.

Enjoyable album. Some of the tracks have been spoiled a little for me by being played at shitty clubnights

Muito bom.

I love 90s/00s alt rock so this should be a no brainer for me. And while the album is great it just never clicked with me to the same degree as some album from that genre from that time period.

Love this lo-fi, garage rock meets pop sound. Haven't listened to the Strokes in a long time and am having fun digging back into this era and genre.

Never really dug deep in The Strokes apart from loving the shit out of "Juicebox" but this is really good. Thought the start of the album took a little to take off, but after that it was one great song after the other.

big fan

Solid indie/garage album. This is definitely the best of the Strokes on this one, it is unfortunate that they peaked so early. The guitar riffs on this album are muddled up nicely through distortion effects and the vocals are produced to match that feel. Fave tracks: Last Nite, New York City Cops

first time listening to the strokes and i am a new fan! i admittedly don't know much about the garage band revival scene, but i found them much easier and enjoyable to listen to than other bands of this time. the vocals, surprisingly, are clear despite fogginess. every song starts off strong and unique, and begs your attention. i'm obsessed with this album cover. black and white, sensual, daring.

One of this big bands I never truly checked out, and what a shame. They have a unique sound and each song follows a formula I tend to enjoy.

This came close to a 5*. I’d say it’s a true 4.5 but couldn’t round up. Good collection of songs with a couple of pure bangers! Very enjoyable

Really enjoyed the guitar riffs in a lot of songs. The vocals aren’t my favorite but I get why they fit with this style. Listened to it twice through since it’s so short!

So new... so hip... so melodic... Last Nite just pure rocks out.

A really solid album, that is great straight ahead rock with punk and indie influence. It sounds much more mature than a debut album. Hard to explain is great. Very enjoyable.

I really like this album, not their best in my opinion but certainly an iconic one with that album cover.

Their playing is a bit simplistic so I can't include this with the great works of musical art, even if those in the biz believe the album helped saved alternative rock. It's really not clear to me how good they are as musicians (though some deft guitar work and solos on The Modern Age). I'm amazed every time I think they have two guitarists; it sounds much simpler than that although yeah I can hear the two distinct styles when I listen closely. Still it's a fun album (loved the free-styling at the start of New York City Cops), an easy enjoyable listen, and includes some well-arranged stylings (bass lines kick ass in most songs) despite the simplicity. Easy to put on repeat and not get annoyed.

It took me back to the early 2000s! A great album!

Man, this takes me back to the end of college days. Great album.

I love this band and I love their songs. I like that their sound is consistent.

This came out a year or two before I properly started following indie music so I can't verify exactly how huge its influence was, but I'm willing to believe it was pretty big - its presence certainly loomed large in my school & uni years. The languid Is This It and the sprightly Someday are my two highlights, though listening back now there are a few forgettable tracks that I can *ahem* 'take or leave'. The difference in quality between this and their later albums isn't as great as common opinion says, IMO. Still, it's worth at least 4 stars.

They are good at doing what they do. Great album. Always wondered why they spelled "nite" like that

Such a cool guitar and bass tone.

She's good! I was already a fan of this album

This is just a really solid record. Every track is great, the songwriting is catchy and direct and the whole album flies by in such a joyous way. It took a few listens for this to click with me, and growing up I always preferred Room on Fire and First Impressions..., but ever since it clicked I've been revisiting these songs more and more. There's a beauty in its simplicity and it's clear how this became such an influential album; one of the first real classics of this century

Alternativ 00’er rock, catchy hooks, fed stil, tempofyldt

Kann man gut hören, wobei ich den Hype um die Band nicht verstehe. Aber das Album hat schon ein paar starke Nummern.

Yes, this is it. This album has some true classics. This is quite the debut album for a group. I will say, not all songs are on the same level. I thought New York City Cops was the worst song on here, all others are great.

This album is full of refreshing, oddly moving early 2k rock; it's just my cup of tea!

Great album.

An album I own and have heard many times. I haven't listened to it in a while, so it was good to hear it again. It's almost a 5-star for me, but not quite. It lacks variety and doesn't finish as strong as it starts.

Had ooit een hele avond een discussie met Xander77 welke band beter is: The Strokes of The Stooges! Ik wist ook wel dat The Stooges cooler zijn, maar het ging om de ruzie en niet om argumenten.

Lovely - although biased because it brings back really nice memories. It’s still rocks and now with time as perspective it’s not just a trend but has a bit of, dare I say, classic vibe going?

It was fun

Is This It, that apes the atonal lo-fi pop of the 1980s; the bouncy and spirited Someday; the ska with progression a` la Cheap Trick of Last Nite. Like it, but don't know if it'S a must hear. (7/10) FT: see above

Oh we're having a good old high school flashback with this album. Looking forward to what this does to my Spotify recommends.

Can’t find anything wrong with it
