Really fun album, loved the punk rock style and lyrics!
I liked how tight this pop punk, electroclash album was. It's production masks how crazy political it is but it quickly comes to the forefront as you listen to it more. It's still very fun though, just never hits that exact spark that would fuel it into the pop punk stuff I've always loved.

Deceptacon is a very strong opener for a little album. And while this whole thing didn't keep me all wrapped up the whole time, it reminded me of the good indie albums of the 90s, the stuff that did what it wanted. I'd probably check this album out again and put Deceptacon on a few mixes.
First listen and I have no prior knowledge of this band or their music. Le Tigre has some elements that remind me of other things (¿from the 90s?) that I have listened to, but I'm not quite sure what. ¿Luscious Jackson? ¿Veruca Salt? ¿Utah Phillips? The album was fine.
On the whole pretty enjoyable and good fun.

interesting blend of that late 90s/early 00s electronica/sampled and vaguely subversive punk. There are definitely better examples of both, but it's not a bad album. Slideshow at Free University was probably my favorite. it was also instrumental/largely sampled which says something probably

Good vocals. Bit of a mix of rather strong songs (Deceptacon, What's Yr Take on Cassavetes, The the Empty, etc) and some boring ones I'd like to cut that remind me of the pop punk melodies I'd rather forget (Hot Topic, Phanta, etc). Sounds weirdly crowdpleasing for something attacking social norms, but I didn't have a bad time.

Poppy. Fun. Girly. Some of it's a little on the nose like Hot Topic. Some's a little art pop/faux deep like Dude Yr So Crazy. The first track slaps and I guess one of these girls coined the phrase "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I like it.
No expectations before listening- I’d never heard anything of them. Enjoyed it. Sometimes came close to being too clever but overall a good listen

I enjoyed the LoFi aesthetic but they were too poppy for my tates.

Well I think I just watched a profanity laced Romper Room program with the clown from It. Some tunes were tolerable but another album that's not on my bucket list.

This album was fine at best, not a fan. I didn't hate it, but there was no part of me that liked it either. Maybe a 2.5?
It’s generally unpleasant. Poor recording quality, vocals buried in the mix, samples from speeches or movies or something. It’s not an album I find compelling, which honestly I imagine they’d be pleased to hear.
Hard to tell if the cruddy lo-fi sound of this record is a deliberate artistic statement or the result of running out of money, but the resulting product is a dreadfully-mixed set of repetitious jams that could have easily been cooked up in someone's garage on a rainy afternoon. Only "Eau d'bedroon Dancing" actually conjures any sense of mystery; everything else here just chases its own tail.

This… was certainly very different from everything I’ve heard so far in this project. Some songs were more listenable than others. In the first track I thought this could turn out to be a very interesting (in a gold way) album, but as the songs went on I found myself getting not only disinterested but also irritated by the production and the grating sound of the singer’s voice. There’s supposedly a bigger message in the lyrics, but the way they are shouted makes it difficult to make the words out. In any event what they were saying didn’t sound revolutionary enough to give the sound a pass. I suppose it being “edgy” and different makes it avoid a 1 star rating from me.

I thought they were saying "what's your take on cats and berries?" It's an average garage punk album except it sounds like it's being yelled by an angry squirrel.

Repetitive synth lines with daft stream of consciousness bollocks spoken over the top. Plop.
Felt like I was listening to the same song, same riffs, same chords, but different lyrics, on repeat. And it wasn't that great the first time.
This is a funny, a little aggressive, and energetic album, but overall it feels pretty normal and forgettable. While listening I didn’t feel much — nothing really caught my attention. The songs have that raw, DIY riot grrrl energy with some electronic beats and shouty vocals, which can be fun in small doses. But there’s nothing particularly catchy or interesting here. The whole record kind of blends together without any standout moments or hooks that make you want to come back. It’s not bad, but it’s also not memorable. Just another decent, energetic indie album from that era that didn’t leave any real impression on me.

One good song. Disappointing.
I like the general musical direction of the album and feel I would be able to get into this if it wasn't executed so badly. It sounds amateurish but not in a charming way. The tracks go all kinds of places but those are neither nice nor interesting. And some of the shout-singing is so annoying. "Slideshow at Free University" was okay I guess. 1.5/5 - weak

Music typically consists of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Some musical styles place special emphasis on one of these elements, neglecting one or even both of the others in the process. And then there’s Le Tigre, who, on their self-titled debut album, focus entirely on the lyrics and neglect all three elements. In other words: despite (or perhaps because of?) what I see as the three women’s understandable sense of mission, the music is simply bad, and no lyrics in the world can turn it into a good album. It’s a shame, really.

This has been an interesting listen with unique vocals and I enjoyed the bass and how they put so much thought and anger into this album. However I don’t dislike it but I would rate it 2 or 3 out of 5, I wish I could rate it 2.5. The reason why is because on first listen on some of the songs there just felt like there was too much happening at once, it also felt slightly repetitive but less repetitive than the last album I listened to. I would probably rate this a 2/5 because I like some of the tracks however, it didn’t stick out to me so it’s definitely a high 2.

It's a powerful sound, with meaningful feminist lyrics and themes that resonated and still would resonate with many people. I'm glad this album was on the list, but I'm not the biggest fan of this style of music, and her voice was too much, and I got sick of it quickly. Glad I heard it, but not my thing.

This is not really for me. I think some of the songs are interesting, and I like the overall tone, but didn't move me.
On paper, I should probably love this; I like a lot of Riot Grrl era bands and artists and have always enjoyed female-fronted punk and indie bands (although my favourite era for these groups is the 70s and 80s). This record however I didn't particularly enjoy. The vocals (particularly the backing/supporting vocals) started irrating me and the music was pretty basic and uncreative for large parts. Reminded me of Beat Happening. like bratty, snotty bands with attitude but this one just did not land at all. Baffled by it's inclusion on the list. Edit: just looked at the critical reception of when this was released and clearly I'm in the minority here.
Not really my thing. And interesting listen, nonetheless. I can feel how this has influenced and inspired newer indie music.

Should try to be less whiny, it’s really annoying. On the good side some of the arrangements are quite decent.
I get the overall theme and want to love it, but I have auditory issues with frequent, high-pitched vocal/notes, and couldn't get over that issue to finish the album.
Sophie - I knew Deceptacon going in, but I think that was an anomaly for me. I want to like this album more than I do, but the style just doesn’t do it for me. The sort of screaming thing isn’t working for me. I do think they are cool though, just from a distance for me. 2/5

This was, le bad. I had hope in the first track but it quickly went downhill. The style of Eau d’bedroom Dancing reminded me vaguely of Alvvays, but not enough for me to want to like or add the song to any of my playlists.

I get what they’re going for, but it just didn’t work for me. The DIY electro punk thing has attitude for days, and I’m into the idea of it more than the actual listening experience. A lot of the songs feel like they’re built around slogans and energy first, and I kept wishing the hooks were a little stronger. There are moments that are genuinely fun, and I can totally see this being a “you had to be there” classic for some people. For me, it wore thin pretty fast.
American Feminist Post-Punk/New-Wave. Soundwise, they reminded me of the UK band Fuzzbox, but Fuzzbox were more fun.

I’ll preface this by saying that lyrics factor little in my ratings. It appears this is highly regarded as an anthem for feminism, and that’s great! But musically, this is mostly bad. There are glimpses of greatness, but it’s often ruined with their avant-garde style. I think there were just two songs where I felt it wasn’t at some point ruined with something weird (“Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing” and “Les and Ray”). The songs are short, but they feel interminable. It was not to my liking. 2/5

I get that its a great message they are getting across with these lyrics. To me it feels like they sacrificed the quality of the music for the sake of the message though. The instruments mostly sound really good and I'm bobbing my head along. But then the singing often doesn't fit which pulls me out of that feeling. As a whole its a good punk-rock album with a message (as punk often has) that they get across very clearly.
Not sure whether I liked this or not, a fair few of the songs were a bit weird for me
i'm not sure what genre this is, but i don't think it's one i'm familiar with. one of the vocalists is trying to sing on a teaspoon of air, the arrangement is pretty minimal but the individual sounds aren't complex to fill it out, and i don't know what's going on in the lyrics i can make out.

I quite enjoyed this album, but I don’t think I will ever listen to it again.
Maybe when I was young and this came out it would feel different to me, but now so many years later it just seems sort of lightweight.
This isn't terrible by any means, but should it really be among the 1001? I wish we could give half stars, but I have to round down.

I applaud them trying to make statements with their music but I didn't care about anything they were singing about which kinda ruined it. Also they just did not sound very good for the first half, I get that that's intentional but oof it's not fun.
really not sure where to land with them. are they trying to be a punk group? then why use (what sounds like) electronic drums? I just can't take the vocals seriously with either screeching or sing-songy whining. the songs are short, so that is a positive.

100/1001 First listen. It’s pretty rockin’. There’s some interesting things going on throughout. Each song has something unique. I don’t think I need any more of this though. 4/10

thought this was a trip hop album, it is a punk and feminist rock oriented album. Not the worse, but not my type of music. The music did go by quick which was nice though!

I remember hearing the first track in a Norwegian movie Reprise. I loved it, we played it to death while partying in high school. Now, 15 years later I still enjoy it but much less and the rest of the album annoys me. There were some interesting ideas but its just too much noise and I'm tired I don't sleep - not because I still party but because my newborn keeps me up at night. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm too old for this shit.

This is synth-pop masquerading as punk that takes itself far too seriously. They try a little too hard to mesh styles instead of writing a melody and concentrating on making good songs. It consistently devolves into an "artistic" statement at the expense of the quality of their art.
Mostly basic. I'm glad they have a message and all, but spend a bit on singing lessons, ok? Best songs are the one where the lead singer doesn't. "Slideshow At Free University" "Dude Yr So Crazy!!" and I guess "Phanta" are the best bits. I wouldn't listen to this again and I'm not sure why I was told I should in the first place. I haven't liked that album much. It had different sounds, but many times they didn't work that well. It has a nice sound, even though it's not what I like at all. But some songs were good. It's just not what I actually would want to listen to.
Highlights: Decepticon, Hot Topic. In a nutshell: riot grrrrrl power. Bands like Le Tigre are a sonic encapsulation of a movement. A middle finger to misogyny and boy bands. Self agency. DIY culture. It’s not going to be everyone’s thing. I didn’t mind it Overall: 4/10
Here's a forgettable review for a forgettable album. The proto-pop-punkish first half didn't do anything for me. I'd probably dig the lyrics, but the vocals put me off. But then the latter half takes a hit of hash, gives the vocals a break, and falls into some nice late 90s downtempo grooves, which I could see slotting in a playlist with UNKLE and Moby. But I probably won't.

The bars way too loud but it’s half full and no one seems to notice. A synth glitch duo is playing poorly on the stage. They stand about four inches higher than the audience. The duo can count all four people dancing. They’ll count it as a success. A woman with Doc Marten boots and red sunglasses stands on her toes to talk to her taller male companion. He’s got an acoustic guitar slung over his back so everyone will know he played earlier. “Hey I’m heading out, Brody’s having a thing and he’s right off of 4th. I’ll link up with you later.” “Ok. We’re going to The Saddle after this so maybe see you then?” “Ugh that place sucks. I think Avalon’s bartending tonight though so I’ll come for a martini.” Interior, Brody’s bathroom: *snifffffff* Our heroine adjusts her glasses. “Fuck! Whoo. Cool if i smoke in here?” She lights her cigarette before Brody has a chance to answer. She takes a drag and passes it to her nasal neighbor. “You didn’t miss much. Pete played his usual set which was, well, Pete. Which is good! And I don’t mean that in a ‘he’s my friend so I have to think it’s good’ but ‘he’s objectively talented and his songs are solid even if he’s been playing the same set for the last three years.’ *sniff* A mustachioed figure in a blue paisley shirt wipes his nose and passes back the stogie. She clicks the tape player and the streets of Alphabet City are silent for a moment. Click. “WHO TOOK THE BOMP?” - That about sums up this album.

I like the b-52s and I like The go team!, and this kind of felt like a mix but it wasn't landing for me. Maybe I just wasn't made in the mood.
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Wasn't really a fan. Seemed edgy for the sake of being edgy. To be honest though, I barely got in two listens throughout the day and so maybe I just didn't give this enough time.

Girls who shout out random things and call it music get benched to never be heard from again. The first 30 seconds is all you need to hear.
Maybe "Deceptacon" wasn't used on a Tony Hawk's pro-skater soundtrack but that's the only place it exists in my memory. This is my day 1 album. Can't lie, I thought this generator thing was pretty lame based on so many of the posts on the subreddit thinking that there is some sort of magic to the "algorithm" that literally just picks one of the albums at random unless pre-empted by the death of a particular musical artist. But I kept lurking the subreddit until I found myself commenting my nostalgic feelings for particular albums and now here I am. Le Tigre was always cursory to my interests since college. I guess their album opener is the only song of theirs I had heard (in Joachim Trier’s Reprise). The rest of the album is fine. I was a little surprised by the plunderphonics of "Slideshow At Free University", otherwise nothing sparked my interest. Caught up with the Yea Right! part directed by Spike Jonze. Street skating is so damn beautiful. Necessary declaimer: I'm not much for lyrics so there may be a depth to the feminist/political lyrics that I could grow to appreciate if I payed more attention to them. EDIT: While listening to my day 2 album, NIN's Downward Spiral I got a Nissan ad with a "Decepticon" ripoff by some awful band named the Smocks. The song is such a ripoff that they shouldn't get a dime off of it.
Like the 1st song, but down hill from there. Same production level as that "My United States of Whatever" song and lyrics not much better. Had the feel of someone's first attempt to wrote and record songs in their bedroom

I was between a 1 and 2 for this one but I’ll give it the star for having some brevity. Didn’t really hate it but didn’t really like it.
Had low expectations knowing this was going to be another feminist punk album (seems to be a lot of them popping up on this list lately), but the first 2 songs were pretty good. It falls off thereafter until you get to Let's Run. I can appreciate My My Metrocard because these girls were way ahead on hating Rudy Giuliani. Slideshow At Free University was also a change of tempo I didn't see coming. I land at around 2.5 stars, but I feel like I enjoyed it as much as the last album we had so I'll give it the same grade: High 2.
Slideshow At Free University was a banger, I wish more of the album was like that. Another disappointing entry. Singing was very rough.
Riot grrrl is a ridiculous name for a music genre, and I am afraid that I am not going to enjoy this based off that. I was correct in my assumption. Did not enjoy. Slideshow at a Free University was cool enough to make this a really low 2.
I think they made the song “Hot Topic” for the store. That’s not a selling point. Musically, they are solid. That voice is just above fingernails on a chalkboard though

This is an interesting album. It reminds me a lot of the B-52s but with a more robust rythym section. Really love the groove of the bass and drums on a lot of the songs. Definitely some danceable music here. The lyrics aren’t straightforward but there are some themes. Who doesn’t like a song about stops on the Metro? I have mixed feelings about the singers. They sound almost juvenile and the singing is kinda buried in the mix when the samples are definitely not. Otherwise it is not a bad album. Just not sure if I would listen to it again. Favorites include “Deceptacon”, “Phanta”, “Let’s Run”, “My My Metrocard”, and “Friendship Station” (Love that backbeat).
Please see my review on The Offspring, which is mostly a rant on the state of 90s music. Nineties bands spent the whole decade picking up the scraps of the prior decades and trying to build something new. By 1999, those scraps were all gone, there was nothing new left, so instead of creating something new, most bands just borrowed from everything that came before and slapped on a new genre label to try and expain what they are doing. As for the Feminist statement, I get it, and I have no problem with that, the problem here, is the music is not that great.

Beetje poppy, beetje punky, vooral best wel matig. Ik snap dat dit een feministisch album is en het is sowieso wel verfrissend om eens wat anders te horen dan een mannelijke punkband, maar jeeeeezus een nummer als The The Empty is gewoon echt verschrikkelijk... Niet door heen te komen joh. Oprecht de nummers daarvoor waren best wel ok, die leunden veel meer in de pop hoek en dat trek ik gewoon beter, maar de punk nummers? Das niet best hoor... Eerste 2 nummers waren lekker poppy, daarna is besloten dat het toch een punkalbum moest worden... Jammer, ging best lekker op het begin! Niet lekker genoeg voor de FAVO, maar daar is echt wel wat voor nodig hoor. Lekker experimenteel, dat wel en een beetje boze politiek ben ik ook best voor te porren maar uiteindelijk beoordelen we ook de muziek en dat was het gewoon echt niet. Apple Music has this album under alternative which I think is completely wrong easily pop rock/electronic rock. Samplers are only thing that really stood out when listening to the album but other than that it feels repetitive. Album really reminds me of teen titans theme song lol which cool but can get old real fast if on repeat stand out songs: Deceptacon, The the Empty, Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing, Friendship Station, and Les and Ray although I think Les and Ray should be on a different album. Honorable mentions: Dude Yr so Crazy!! Only issue the lyrics enjoy instrumental tho.
...wait a minute, these girls did that awful "I'm With Her" video back in 2016, right? I like the instrumentation on this album a fair bit, but the tedious vocal delivery and awful mix kills it completely.

EXTREMELY 90s
Female singer had a yelly annoying voice and the male was worse. The songs were juvenile sounding lyrically, almost like they were written for an SNL skit. Not great.
Obviously very weird but I liked it more than I thought. The first song was pretty good. Not my usual style though. Some of the ones with like glass breaking noises etc are not so good for casual listening.

There were a couple of tolerable songs but for the most part this was a pretty forgettable compilation of pseudo-intellectual crap with "What's Yr Take on Cassavetes" epitomizing that.

This is #day199 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... let’s go rrriot, right? Some electro-dance punk here with influences from '60s pop, '80s new wave, '90s indie, and occasionally annoying vocals. I think it’s an important record in the context of the riot grrrl movement, even if that movement was criticized for not being inclusive enough. But whatever... I’m giving this a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day200—can’t believe it!
Does not sound as cool as it did when it came out, but that’s okay. Didn’t actually do tons for me then; doesn’t do much for me now.

Female voices! I want to like riot grrl music but I don't. I like the idea of them and I'd probably like them as people, but I don't like the music, or at least I don't like this much.

I'd never heard of this band. The first time I listened to it I thought it was dreadful but I put it on again and it started growing on me. It was actually quite good at masking the noise of fireworks from the dog!

Sound like a slew of Similar-sounding bands who All did it better. Say yes to the Ting Tings, La Roux, CSS, & Gossip. Less of a fan of Le Tigre. A few tracks were aight: Friendship Station stands out.
Horrible voices
Didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either. Nothing special. The second song sounds like a commercial for boots.
This album starts off pretty well, with Decepticon being a fun, bouncy track. Unfortunately, the album falls off sharply after that with the remaining tracks varying between just about ok and not very good. It's a shame, I like the ethos of the band and wanted to like the music more, but it's fundamentally weak. A semi-foof.
I’d rather listen to the first sounds - Devo, the Go Gos, etc.

Never heard their music, but deceptacon sounded familiar right away. This sounds very 90s. Not my jam, but I don't hate it, 2* Highlights: deceptacon, slideshow at free university Metric came on after this and I was like, ah yes, this is a refined version of le tigre.

I’m down with the ladies and their message, but musically this was pretty annoying
First song I was thinking “ohhhh, this could be fun.” Just some unapologetic rocking. After a few more songs I was like, “okay, okay I get it.” Just didn’t sustain for me.
I wanted this album to be more of a bop than it turned out to be. I was optimistic after the first song but kinda fizzled. Maybe sitting in the airport waiting on a delayed flight to wasn’t the best setting for this type of record… 2.5/5
Poppy dancing shit, not good
Some interesting/fun instrumentation that is let down by the continually screechy or otherwise infantine vocals and, indeed, the occasional lyrics that are "dumb like a linoleum floor” (not really, but I couldn't pass up on the opportunity; that said, they are mostly unexceptional). Deceptacon and The The Empty grew on me the most (funnily enough the two tracks most exemplary of the "screechy" vocals), and along the unexpectidely soft/vulnerable Eau d'bedroom Dancing (my favorite among the bunch) are good/great. (Phanta is decent as well, and I wish that "Slideshow at Free University" was not an interlude/had actual lyrics/verses; it sounds like something that MF Doom would use to great effect.)

This album was a surprise to see on this list. Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill) is an interesting person and Bikini Kill was a cool band with a couple of good songs and a whole lot of attitude. I never like this band and I don't think that they are great musicians. 2 stars based on Bikini Kill nostalgia.

First minute of the first song is pretty good! When assholes say they hate Hipster music, this is the music they are referring to. Just bleh. Also I’m probably just too dumb to understand all the cool references they’re making
Distortion sounds almost blown out at times and may not be for everyone, but it gives the music an archive feel that 60s music videos had when watching them as a kid in the 80s/90s 1-4 are choppy and short punk songs, with surf-rock-like rhythms and shouting lyrics. 5-6 are slower ballad-like songs that showcase some rough guitar work. 7-8 60s Fun pop rock and surf rock feel. 9- sounds like a Beck song 10- talking over repetitive piano riff, trying to make a point, but the riff is too droning and uninteresting for me to care. Could use a chorus or background singer. Last few songs get a bit ambient and lost my attention.

No previous experience with the artist or this album. The album starts out with an alt-pop-rock feel that feels pretty raw almost like They Might Be Giants. Nothing blowing me away in the first half of the album. Some of it is a little annoying and most of it is just fine. In the 2nd half, "Slideshow At Free University" stands out a bit too me it has sort of a DJ Shadow feel to it and I happen to really enjoy that style. The whole album flew by and I'll probably never revisit any of it.
