Very cool album.

Haven't listened to this one in a long time. Good album but not my favorite by The Kinks.

Love The Kinks!

Weird and funny and fun, wasn’t really in the mood though

Heard this before but not for a very long time. David Watts still a classic.

Best leuk af en toe

Bests memoriea from hearing theese songs.

One of their worst of their first 7 years… which still means a very good record.

A great album but a little messy. I didn't get a signature in all songs like I saw in other albums of The kinks.

It’s good. Hard to understand the importance of albums like this. It was probably more “groundbreaking” back in the day but it still has some good pop rock 60s songs.

Great album, Beatles-esque but a bit more alt. Would listen again and explore more

Sound molto alla Beatles, molto piacevoli e coerenti. Waterloo sunset e Wonderboy assolutamente memorabili.

Good vibes, enjoy

This reminded me a lot of the Beatles, except one song that kind of reminded me of Bob Dylan. Good listen

Such a unique sound. I haven't heard many of these songs, but they are instantly recognizable.

If you don't like The Kinks you're a chump

Dope, lot of really raw sounds. Love the vintage textures. Didn’t super blow me away though

Beach boys vibes, pretty chill tunes

Encore un classique du Rock 60's

This one was just fine. I like The Kinks, but there's nothing memorable on this album.

I don’t mind The Kinks and I got on well with TVGPS but this seemed a bit middling to me. Even the name suggests a lack of something truly great. There’s a couple of tracks that stood out as good on first listen and in _Waterloo Sunset _, one classic song, but for the most part, this passed me by.

These guys really are one hit wonders to me. Waterloo Sunset is a great song, the rest is ok but nothing special

An enjoyable enough listen. Definitely has a knock off Beatles vibe, but a passable at a glance knock off.

Some great tunes on here, but a number of songs I just didn’t get into, too. Like it overall.

60s pop/rock in the vein of early Beatles. Unfortunately the production doesn't hold up very well and it sounds very rough in places. Some of the songs were kind of fun, like the sea shanty Harry Rag and Waterloo Sunset. But overall it was a bit forgettable.

Packed with hits, but I'm especially partial to the sick sweetness of Death of a Clown and Waterloo Sunset #everythingisakink

Beatles-esque, childlike, weird—alternating between good and bad ways

# Playlist Track - Waterloo Sunset # Notes - My favorite track from this album kind of sounds like something the Beatles recorded and never released for some reason. - Not a bad album, not at all. I enjoy that there are all kinds of sound mixed in there. Still, not something I'm going to be returning to all the time.

Takes me back

I prefered the first Kinks album I got in my journey through the 1001, though this was not bad. Maybe my expectations were higher because I liked "Arthur" so much.

🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 (rounded down because of the overall effect) Something else by the Kinks, and so soon after the last thing by the kinks—what difference is there, really? Well, in fairness, I knew more songs off of this one—"Waterloo Sunset," "David Watts," and "Death of a Clown" are all saved, though they're amongst my least favorite Kinks songs in my library. That being said, I definitely enjoyed them this time around, maybe simply due to the fact that they were familiar faces in an unexpected setting. I also really enjoyed a few other songs on this album, though none powerfully so. Overall, though, this one was mellower than I like my kinks—certainly the them at the most "hum dee dum" / "hi-ho" British I've ever heard them, and while I'm not opposed to that as a whole, it doesn't amount to much looking back. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

Wait, you’re telling me these AREN’T the Beatles? Huh?? Fun and weird but not quite a 4.

This album was a little weird to me and sounded dated. There were parts that sometimes caught my ear, but they didn't pop up a lot. The last song was nice though. Overall, not really my thing.

Otro gran álbum de la banda. Me llegan los tipos estos, sabían componer espectacular. 6/10

Like other stuff by them more but this was just okay mate

Very Yellow Submarine like album and I don't just mean because it sounds like the Beatles---although it does sound very much like something the Beatles would write and sing. It has a similar sort of humor and childlikeness to it. Not a very serious album. Downloaded two (I think) songs but mind you the album is 20+ so that isn't amazing numbers. The best song is the one I already had downloaded: Waterloo Sunset (I didn't count it towards the two mentioned earlier, those are separate). What does that signify? That this is a 3.5 stars album (damn you for not letting me do halfsies) and that I have amazing taste (I can find the best song off an album even before listening to the whole album, isn't that remarkable!)

Not a big Kinks fan to begin with, and this album doesn't help. 3

Waterloo sunset is an absolute classic. The rest of the album was fairly solid

You haven’t heard the kinks like this since the last time you heard the kinks like this.

Probably helped this album’s rank for me as I was traveling through the English countryside on a bus with it playing.

This is very British, but it’s not bad

This is like the last album but more backgroundy. I liked it less

Multiple songs on the tracklist named after other people? What is this, a 2017 Soundcloud trap album?

It’s good, but kind of like a poor-man’s Beatles.

I feel like every album is the same

not as good as lola vs powerman

i enjoyed that immensely but i wouldn't listen to it regularly as an album.

Not bad, a bit repetitive

Waterloo Sunset almost bumped it up to a 4 on its own, but the rest of the album wasn't quite there.

I dont know… I just really didnt find anything super interesting about this one. Side B was much better though. That would be closer to a 4

It was alright, liked some of the songs a lot but in general am not that into 60's stuff

Eh. I've enjoyed most of the Kinks I've heard, but this just wasn't for me.

Quite alright, as far as I recall

Nite quite ready for prime time, despite a couple of great tracks

Alt rock

Some great tracks (David Watts, Death of a Clown, Tin Soldier Man, Lazy Old Sun), and an all-time classic in Waterloo Sunset. But quite large portions of the album don't fully grab me. 7/10

Die beatles wenn sie nur so okay wären

Lowkey quaint.

pretty nice

Jeg fortsætter som fan af Kinks selvom det her er det mest “we have Rubber Soul at home” agtige album vi har haft fra dem

3.8/5 ray davies incredible some bangers on this

I for one would’ve preferred Something Else by The Kinks

Désolé, c'était mieux You Really Got Me.

Se nota que es un disco muy de su época, bailongo, pensado para entretener

I can see why folks say this sounds like early Beatles but not every song hits

Aight, guess it’s more 60s rock time! David Watts was alright. Nothing special, slightly grating, but not offensive. Death of a clown starting with ode to joy was a nice touch. Two sisters had some fun to it, but I found No Return quite boring. It had good guitar, but that didn’t save it. I actually quite enjoyed Harry Rag. It was quite amusing. Tim Soldier Man had some nice brass. Situation vacant was alright! I liked the instrumentation at the end. Love me till the sun shines felt like a complete track. I didn’t love it, but I appreciated it. Lazy old sun was actually pretty cool. Afternoon tea didn’t take itself too seriously. End of the season was quite cool. Waterloo sunset to close was quite nice. I still think this album is slightly boring but it redeemed itself slightly. 3/5 ⭐️ 121/1089

This album gave off major Beatles vibes. I enjoyed the slow nature of the songs and their creative beats as well. It won’t make my musical rotation, but it was a surprisingly decent listen.

No. 394/1001 David Watts 3/5 Death of a Clown 4/5 Two Sisters 3/5 No Return 3/5 Harry Rag 3/5 Tin Soldier Man 3/5 Situation Vacant 3/5 Love Me Till The Sun Shines 4/5 Lazy Old Sun 3/5 Afternoon Tea 3/5 Funny Face 3/5 End of the Season 3/5 Waterloo Sunset 4/5 Average: 3,23 Alright record. Nothing especially great about it.

fun, smorgasbord of a record. I enjoyed the variety and freedom of the songwriting the mixing is pretty tinny unfortunately. I was debating giving it four if not for the production quality fav tracks are "No Return," "Lazy Old Sun" and "Waterloo Sunset" there are also a few tracks I didn't care for

It's decent, sounds like the Beatles

Outside of Waterloo Sunset, it's just really forgettable. Not that it's bad, I just don't care that much. Indifferent.

Pretty good

Too old for my liking. Stand-outs - Love Me Till the Sun Shines - Afternoon Tea

Always enjoy a kinks album, but not as much as the first one we had. Still a solid album. 7/10 Top song Waterloo sunset

Some good tunes but as a whole album I feel like it's missing something.

Okay. Good.

20 songs all very short. Lots of variety. If you don’t like harpsichord don’t worry that songs only 3 minutes long. One song that I recognise. No complaints but not in a hurry to listen to again.

3 out 5 stars. I like the Kinks and this album was solid.

This was well executed and I don’t have many gripes to speak of, it just didn’t interest me a whole lot and I may not return to it. 1 listen Favorite Track: Waterloo Sunset

Expectation: -> I don't know this band. After listening: -> Some Beatles/Monkees vibes. Not my genre for sure. First listen I was on a 2 but I gave it 3-4 more full spins through and there are definitely some songs worth coming back to. What this album lacked most of all was cohesiveness. It felt like each song was recorded on a different day, in a different studio, with different instruments, and different vocalists. The final product…a collage. Track ranking: Waterloo Sisters Tea Situation Nice Love Me Soldier Harry Polly Funny Autumn Watts Clown Susannah Wonderboy Season Sun Lincoln No life No return

Contains all the quirkiness and melody this band's known for, just wish it was a bit longer. Favorite track: Harry Rag

So, my 600th album milestone is one from The Kinks. There are worse ways to celebrate this milestone than listening to a Diet Beatles album. Favorite Track: "Harry Rag".

Very surprisingly listenable. I even listened to Harry Rag twice.

Didn’t really give it a fair shot but Waterloo Sunset has been one of my fave songs. Would like to revisit.

Too Bwatles-y for me though I really liked the guitar and bass tone on a couple songs

Solid album. Silly songs are funny and the serious songs are good. I liked death of a clown, love me till the sun shines and lazy old sun.

So many Kinks albums, so many songs that are ... fine. So few truly distinctive or exceptional ones. Waterloo Sunset is a wonderful song. I love that song. But ... there's just not that much here to make me want to listen to this album again. I am very fond of the Kinks. One of my first concerts was seeing them in downtown Boston on the Think Visual tour. Grew up hearing them on the radio and liking them. But when I go through their classic albums, I'm generally disappointed. It's like Squeeze -- you already know all the good songs. The albums just add filler. That said, knowing David Watts initially through the Jam's cover, it was interesting to listen to it. Good song. Not sure I ever got around to listening to the Kinks original before. And it was interesting to hear the way, at a pretty early date (1967), they were writing songs that drew on a variety of styles. One song reminded me of Sky Children by Kaleidoscope (which I only know through a friend being very into 60s psychedelia), another of the Who (mod version), another of the Who (Tommy edition), one seemed derived from the Irish folk song Raggle Taggle Gipsy ... they jumped from You Really Got Me to rock as the musical form that can imitate all other forms very quickly. That is really interesting. But ... two really good songs, a bunch of ok ones, mediocre sound engineering, no really hot playing or soloing ... insert familiar bewildered questions about the list ...

Novelty songs! The Who found traction early with similar stuff. Enjoyable. I much prefer "You Really Got Me," which was on WBCN before band class this one time at Clarke Junior High... and on my secret pre-Walkman radio after lights out that year.

This was a nice first--first time I ever listened to an entire album by the Kinks. My connection with this band was mostly just hearing the songs AOR would play (Lola, You Really Got Me, etc) and knowing a kid in junior high who was OBSESSED with them. Later when reading about the British Invasion I would always hear Ray Davies lamented as a massively underappreciated songwriter. Listening to this record, it kind of makes sense. I enjoyed it and can appreciate the songwriting. But I can also see why they are a little more of an acquired taste. I don't know if it was the production, the mix, or just the band's style, but many of these songs seemed well-written but performed with very low energy. Also, Ray Davies just is not a great singer.

Kinda OK, but started liking it more when I let it sit in the background while not paying attention to it.

Oh yeah, Waterloo Sunset is some great 60's pop. I felt No Return stood out as well.

#898. I honestly can't think of anything positive or negative to say about this one. It is an album that I have now listened to, and that's about all I have. 3/5: acceptable

No private session for Spotify. Another pleasant album by the Kinks. Love Waterloo Station.

Wes Anderson is shaking!

I really liked the other Kinks albums we've heard, but this one seemed to just drag on.

I was excited to listen to this. Waterloo Sunset is one of the all time greats. The album was pretty good, and would likely shine on repeated listens. Not a lot of stand out after just one spin.

норм, но ниче не сохранил.

Brit-Rock Circa the 60s: 12 million variations of "ooo girl, I love you girl, ooo ooo ooo". I appreciate that this era had to happen for what follows but it's not my favorite flavor. There's something clearly a little different happening on this one. The instrumental work is fantastic. Surprise harpsichord? Incoming mellotron! The bassist is very fun. The guitar on "David Watts" is borderline crunchy (that's a good thing). I'd like to dig it but I feel like I'm missing some important context that would take this from 'quirky' to 'brilliant'.

*Pretty strong album but the Kinks have several better albums.

First off, The Kinks are a good band. They've got some great hits and they did a lot of experimenting. I just don't really like the baroque, chamber pop, theatrical stuff very much. And there's definitely too much on this one. "Harry Rag" is fun and "Love Me Till the Sun Shines" is a pretty great song. I prefer the more rocking Kinks. Let's call this a 3 and prolly not listen to it again.

A good album. Not sure what I expected. It was my first time listening to the Kinks. I enjoyed it. It was a good album. Not sure I would go out of my way to listen again. I thought it was good and you could hear others who have been influenced by them.

If I were feeling better, I might have interpreted this differently. Some people are calling it whimsical, and it very well may have been, and that may have been the intention. I don't think whimsy necessarily translates well through time/culture, because we don't know what aspects of their time and place they are playing with. I just know that it sounds like a lot of other (what I think of as) corny 60's British music.

Vilken låt Waterloo Sunset är alltså. Dunder. Blviit ett fan av det sena 60-talet, speciellt The Kinks och The Zombies. Plattan som helhet är något segare än den förra dock och ah, den är inte ens i närheten av mästerverket Odyssey and Oracle.

är totalt neutral

Some gems, but lots of “meh” moments 😄

I love the Kinks, but this isn't their finest work, really hoping they have at least three more in this list

Waterloo Sunset does a lot of heavy lifting for this one, closing out in gorgeous fashion what is mostly a collection of the kind of theatrical ditties which are never my favourite kind of Kinks songs.

I like it, but was ready for the album to be over about 2/3 of the way through

Perfectly fine, I liked some tracks and others just sound like another Beatles track, which is fine I guess. The Kinks aren’t a band that I’ve ever got into but there are tracks I’ll hear and think, this is nice. Lazy Old Sun really stood out on this album as my favourite, some cool psychedelic undertones, really appreciated the vocal delivery as well. 3 stars

Simple and direct (there's nothing here approaching four minutes in length) Something Else sees the Kinks struggling to find a hook to hang their baroque pop flourishes on. Waterloo Sunset is a standout, of course, but elsewhere, the quirky Anglo-centric antics are interesting without being too memorable. I'd say it probably misses more frequently than it lands, but it is still a solid enough offering as the band move away from their beat group beginnings. In-your-face drums and vocals dominate the sound, with spikey guitars only occasionally punctuating the warm, earthy acoustic backdrop.

the beatles if they were good

Waterloo Sunset maximaler banger, der rest leider mid

Enjoyed this more than the 'Arthur' album. Sounded more Beatles-like than the last one I listened to. Waterloo Sunset is a classic, also enjoyed Autumn Almanac, Afternoon Tea and Situation Vacant.

Decent listen, but did drag on a bit. Might have heard some of these but nothing stood out too much.. global rating is accurate for me, 3.25/5

Getting some Herman's Hermits vibes!

i dont relate to two sisters my sister and i are different but there is no jealousy and she is the best dk if im just not in the right mood but this isn't really doing it for me rn feel like i should be more into this than I am

two sisters mention !!! fun vibes, silly songs, i liekd 3.75 ish

It’s very goofy but I like the intentional sampling of international styles. Could see this growing on me.

Really fun, twee, light album that was tailor made to be in a Wes Anderson film 3.5

This is good. Fun listen and the Kinks are always great. Not sure I’d call this a “must listen” album though. Again, some catchy fun songs, excellent drumming and all around enjoyable. But nothing over the top special. I think some of their other work is more unique and iconic.

Chill tunes that aren’t tough to listen to, but also didn’t blow me away.

Not really moved by this. I love how cohesive and interesting the village green preservation society is, and most of the songs here didn't have any of that charm and interest that I found there.

Yea this just kinda sounds like a lesser Beatles ngl. 6.4/10

The Beatles were on lsd when they wrote sgt peppers, this album sounds like Sgt peppers were on lsd and wrote this. Weird album not terrible but maybe a little too out there crazy. When I think kinks I always think of that seen in the Bob Dylan movie where Bob Dylan’s like that’s the kinks man in his funny voice. Very unrelated sry.

Sicher besser als die Beatles.

This feels like a short story collection. It’s songwriting in English tradition, as partly forged by Ray Davies himself. Quite a few of the songs have the feeling of musical theatre. It’s perhaps more interesting as a historical artefact than as music nowadays. But Waterloo Sunset is undoubtedly a 5 star song, one of the greatest ever.

I nearly switched off during track 2, death of a clown glad I didn’t. I found it to be a very quirky album of the time. Once I got my head into the 60’s I thought, yeah , I get this. Not too bad at all.

Fine. Not for me.

Waterloo Sunset is a great song, but there are some duds on here too.

3.0 - Ok

Good energy! I like the fun feel of it, but no obvious standouts.

Pretty good

Not my favourite by the Kinks, whom I love. So fucking goofy.

This is my first Kinks album. I love the piano use and the sometimes morose songwriting. I look.forward to.more Kinks albums on the list.

It was ok. Not the masterpiece I was expecting though. Some good tracks, but plenty of filler.

Maybe just too much Kinks this week but this just feels like solid tunes.

It was alright, I’ve enjoyed other Kinks records significantly more though

my head nodded and my toe tapped. i am giving this an extra point because this is from 1967 and could EASILY be from 10 years later they were eating these pop songs up

same thing, different name. solid for its genre and time, but overall boring.

The Kinks are not a band I got into, I have no idea why, they are great. I need to listen to them much more. But then again there are only so many hours in a day....

somewhere between the beach boys and the beatles there lies an uncanny valley where the kinks reside

I enjoyed this album from The Kinks! I didn’t think it was anything groundbreaking but I had a good time listening to this British psychedelic rock/pop album. Waterloo Sunset is the obvious standout track from this album. Overall, I enjoyed this album and would listen to it again soon!

Great record. Working class concept record.

*1967. British rock. *This is classic Kinks music - fun experimental songs that are very much Beatles-esque. *None of the songs were particularly memorable to me, but overall a solid album. RATING - 6.5/10

Waterloo sunset is one of the best songs ever written. David Watts is OK. The rest is rubbish

Fun album overall, perhaps not the most memorable for me, but I enjoyed listening to it. Lots of Beatles vibes to it.

The Kinks have always felt like they are following the popular trends of the time, trying to fit in but never really believing in what they were doing. Their music isn't bad, but it is bland.

i just dont think its their best work PERSONALLY but many would disagree

Fun! Reminded me of some late 60's Beatles.

Idealne 3, przynajmniej po dwóch przesłuchaniach. Nic mnie nie irytowało, nic nie zachwyciło. Solidny album. Takie typowe lata 60. Może jakbym dał mu więcej czasu, to bym znalazł w nim coś więcej, ale nie bardzo mi się chce po tych pierwszych dwóch razach.

It's fine, not a medicore 2 but close.

decent out put by them.

Kind of fun

it’s hard to listen to this without thinking of the beatles or wishing it was the zombies, but upon a second listen, i was able to hear the ways in which they were unique. cool instrumentation and fun, whimsical songs.

There’s some stuff on here that doesn’t work for me, but also stuff I really enjoyed. It all evens out to be a pretty okay album.

There was nothing I recognized, but pretty decent nontheless.

never heard before but i love the kinks!! -david watts is sooooo beatles its uncanny wow -harry rag is interesting... -love me till the sun shines!!! -afternoon tea!!!!!!! -waterloo sunset so good 3.5/5

Enjoyable British Psychedelic 60s Rock. It’s not The Beatles, but it’s not bad.

There's a heavy Beatles influence on this album and it overshadows the effort here. The Kinks music that became more popular in the 70s/80's was much more their own and also more enjoyable.

There's one or two decent tracks here, and overall a good listen, if only once. That UK 60s pysche sound is very prevalent, with shades of The Beatles and Bonzos. I won't be going back though; just not enough music minutes left in my life. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 199 Already owned : 44 Purchased : 8 To buy list : 5 Nope : 142

An apt title given this is the fourth Kinks album I've encountered on this list. As I've said about Bob Marley and Bob Dylan, yes, it's a great record but if you're selecting 1,001 albums from the whole of human history, it seems a bit restricting to keep selecting the same artists. This is a perfectly good pop record by a band I like a lot, but I don't think it would make it on to my list of 5,000 most essential albums, so I can't for the life of me fathom what it's doing here. I guess the point is to review the record rather than the list though so, yeah, it's good. It has some of my favourite Kinks tracks on it but the instrumentals sound dated - more like background music to an old TV show. Not even an essential Kinks album.

My fav kinks project so far , intricate and smooth

The Kinks kind of sit in an interesting place as far as iconic '60s bands go. It seems to me like they had a hit or two, then were rewarded with relative commercial failure for the rest of their creative heyday. Which, I think makes people rally around The Kinks as an underdog story. After-all, the forgotten little '60s-band-that-could being rediscovered in the '80s off of a freak MTV hit does make for great rock 'n roll myth-making. Anyways, from what I've seen, Something Else is very well loved as one of the band's finest moments, so I'm interested in hearing if it holds up. And, for me, the answer is "kinda". I mostly know The Kinks for their earlier, garage-y hits, but there's (perhaps fittingly) very little of this on Something Else. They traded their earlier muscle for an art-y pop palette, more mature songwriting, and an occasional splatter of psych. And the approach here is enjoyable: the best thing I can say about this album is that it's varied, consistent, and interesting. A lot of these songs embrace denser arrangements and really colorful, fun songwriting. And from this jumping-off point, a lot of ground is covered. I am particularly fond of David Watts, Death Of A Clown, Harry Rag, Situation Vacant, Lazy Old Sun, Funny Face, and Waterloo Sunset. But, at the same time, I think something like Tin Soldier Man is a little annoying. But overall, this is a pretty good album. That being said, I don't hear anything here that makes me understand the cult that The Kinks have now. Although, I'm open to hearing more, and I know this was immediately before a string of well-loved concept albums that I'm interested in hearing (which is, in-turn, a few years before a string of universally hated concept albums that I'm not especially interested in hearing, but I digress). What The Kinks give here is enjoyable and interesting, but it's mostly just made me interested to see how far they took their sound during their creative peak.

Britrockas vėl. No return būgnai ir balsas kaip girl from ipanema lol.

I listened to this record several times yesterday. The music is really good, but I just don't connect to it. I'm not sure why. I actually find this album quite creative and easy to listen to. The album doesn't even sprawl or overstay its welcome, which made repeated listens possible. Maybe I just don't relate to it because it's so British. I think it has something to do with the tight focus on small, intimate "kitchen sink" moments. No clue. Morrisey was heavily influenced by the British kitchen-sink dramas, and I love The Smiths. But I just don't care that much here. I guess I'm not a Kinks fan. Three stars.

Välillä mukavaa ja välillä tekee mieli skippailla. Kokonaisuus menee sinne mediocre kategoriaan ja helppo antaa 3

Ihan oukki.

Pretty alright, but sounds pre beatles, unlike the better kinks albums which sound post beatles

Yes, this is something else. It is easy to recognize the greatness and playfulness of the Kinks, but this album feels like is a bunch of b-sides and almost great songs. Maybe it was, and they just released it anyway. Glad to listen, but I was immediately drawn in. Maybe as my love of the Kinks grows, the album will open up.

класичне британське rnb, не можу сказати що альбом мене чимось зачепив звучить хорошо все супер, no doubt why is it classic але кайнда скучно лав зе лірікс

This is probably the most kinks of the albums I’ve heard of theirs.

Gonna have to revisit this one.

It was pleasant. I didn’t know any songs except Waterloo Sunset which I like. Nice, short songs.

Nice, enjoyed it but not my fav.

"Waterloo Sunset" and "David Watts" are great, the rest is good. 3.5 stars

Unfortunately, most of this album just has me comparing this band to the Beatles, which is a tough ask, though understandable for the time. I thought "Waterloo Sunset" was a standout track, but "Lazy Old Sun" reminded me way too much of "Strawberry Fields Forever" to enjoy it. All in all, a safe sounding British Invasion era pop-rock album

Listenable.

one of my regrets is that i dont have any time to go to waterloo bridge to see the sunset the both time i travelled to england. as always the kinks have delivered a piece of stereotypical bri'ish artwork managed to capture the life of the country. but actually i wont come back to songs that are not waterloo sunset. 3.5/5

Whimsical kinks but pretty basic

listened to those principle 4 kinks albums last year and really liked them!! they are i think a really fun and enjoyable band with tight and cool trax... waterloo sunset being the best track on this album of course

overall okay, sometimes boring, nothing that changed my life.

I was in a bad mood when I listened to this. Mayyybeee on a better day this could have gotten a 4. But nah. 3.

Pleasant.

I remember liking some of the Kinks' stuff. None of that is on here.

Good album

Good album. Missing a little something special. Prefer Village Green and Arthur over this. Still a good listen though. 3/5 Might listen again

Alrighty, the second album of the Kinks on this list. I have put quite a lot of effort in rating Village Green Preservation Society but feels like today I am not in the mood to put as much effort into this one. So the only song I knew is Waterloo Sunset but on the 2nd or 3rd re-listen, the album opener - "David Watts" is also quite cool.

Little like the Beatles but less tight

3.1 2x

Tasteful 60s folk psychedelia, a well made album all around - albeit a bit dull at times (to me).

3 stars because it seems innovative for the time, but sounds so dated.

Listened Before? N This album is another mid-60's British pop/psychadelic work. It's fine. Very similar to others of the time. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Waterloo Sunset

I often forget about the kinks but listening to them makes me feel pretty good. I like bands that do that, sometimes.

This was ok. Some good songs, some average songs.

Pretty dated sound, but some interesting stuff here

pretty ok, very Beatles vibes

Liked it better on the 2nd play through, think harry rag is my favorite song. Jake's comment about "beatles at home" still very amusing, but I enjoy the album more if I can avoid comparing them with the beatles directly.

I know half dozen kinks songs, none of them on this album. Seemed a little goofy maybe, or like a budget Beatles. Pretty mid

Good group. Good music.

Waterloo sunset er klasse. Resten av albumet kommer ikke opp på samme nivå.

Very progressive for its time, still I prefer their later works

A bit like the late Beatles.

Solid album, interesting music one hit the rest was fine. Enjoyed listening, but would not need to do it again, but it did enjoy it.

Decent album, stands up to the test of time

Not one of my favorite by The Kinks. Couple of good songs but nothing I would return to. 6/10

Waterloo Sunset is a banger

Good. Not great. I always think they are hyped as this amazing thing, and there are about 5 songs of theirs that I love and meet that hype. Not sure they are on here. I'll probably give the actual food album of there's a 4 when it comes up on my queue.

Enjoyable and innovative for the time. Some classics like Waterloo Sunset.

Sounds like mid career Beatles.

Low-mid 3? Opening track is not my fav but generally fine

Listen, I really like The Kinks, I'd actively listen to this album, or any of their others, but it is kinda just, "something else by the kinks"

Has a jangly, circus-like sound. I think what they call baroque pop/music hall British music of the period. It’s not my taste. Most songs are short - around the 3 minute mark or less. The album is unoffensive - a pleasant listen in the background. Waterloo Sunset is the standout track.

6.5/10 Favourite: Waterloo Sunset Least Favourite: Two Sisters

Vähän jo taiteellisempaa alkuränttätänttää briteistä

The Kinkseillä on muutama hyvä ralli mutta ei tällä levyllä. Vähän toistava. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hate to say it (since I adore some other Kinks work), but this album didn't catch me. Found it a little dull.

Not sure what I was expecting, but it was not this. faded into the background without any real stand out.

Death of a Clown was sort of poignant, but can I have something else by the kinks besides "Something Else By The Kinks"? First listen through did give me a couple shrugs, thinking maybe .but no so much. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? None ⭐⭐⭐ Liked it ok but saved no tracks

Quintessential British invasion.

It was OK

I thought I was going to like this one more than I actually did.

Had many highs and lows. It's a very decent album

Waterloo sunset is 10x better than all other tracks

I love their great songs. The rest just sound like the rest honestly

Representa bem a época a qual foi lançado. Minha favorita foi Harry Rag...

Uhhhhh I liked it! Fine album all in all, Two sisters somewhat irritated me but there were some real gems on here. Mainly referring to: Death of a clown and Tin soldier man here. Some songs really didn’t really do it for me but I think it had more hits than misses all and all

I have really whiffed on The Kinks all these years and have not paid them the attention they deserve. I like their indie rock vibe, and listening to this album reminded me of Guided By Voices and others that have obviously sprouted from the seeds The Kinks have dropped.

03/09/2025 I mean it was okay, I didn't get a hard on for it. Probably wouldn't listen again.

Old Beatles vibes

I could hear The Beatles influence.

It starts out great. But it feels like it takes forever to get from Death of a Clown to Waterloo Sunset.

It was okay, not my favorite.

These songs all kinda sound the same. Many are repetitive; some are silly, and not in the fun way. Lazy Old Sun was deeply unpleasant, like listening to an old battery-powered tape player dying. Did not enjoy this very much. 2.5 rounded up

Love it. Many great songs here

This is unmistakably The Kinks—Ray’s songwriting quirks, Dave’s bite, the whole British-music-hall-through-a-rock-band filter—but it’s also a pivot point for the group. You can hear them stretching, testing where their sound can go. A few tracks absolutely land: sharp, charming, melodic in that “only The Kinks could write this” way. But there are also moments where the experimentation feels more like searching than finding. It’s not a bad record—far from it—but it has that classic “transitional album” energy: a band pushing past the formula that worked, trying to see what else is possible. Interesting, sometimes brilliant, occasionally uneven. A necessary step in their evolution, even if it’s not the album I’d hand someone as the entry point.

entertaining, with their cocky cockney lyrics.

This album is fine, and very British in its baroque-pop style. But as someone who really likes the Kinks, I get why this album sold poorly. Waterloo Sunset redeems what is a lot of meh

No matter how hard I try to get into the Kinks, it just doesn’t stick.

It feels highly inspired by the Beatles albums the previous few years. It’s missing all the raw rock that makes the debut awesome and doesn’t have the hooks that Village Green would have.

pretty good but the sound is incredibly emblematic of the 60s.

The first line “I am a dull and simple lad” sums up men really. Reminded me of The Beatles, just sillier. Not too bad.

I used to really love this band and I have a relationship with this album. Possibly was more of a village green guy though? They have some of that beatles pure magic but of course through their own lens. Waterloo sunset is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I know. Unfortunately on the few times I listened through it this time it passed me by a little bit. Makes me want to try their other records again

Bit dated for my taste, some catchy songs like tin solider man and lazy old sun

A few good songs (waterloo sunset), the rest is mediocre.

Not quite a 4 for me but still an enjoyable album. Ending with Waterloo Sunset was a nice surprise

I probably would have loved this album if I lived in 1967 England. A few too many tea references for me, but obviously a hugely influential group and album.

Strange album, some songs have a bit of an edge, while some felt like they had been written around a campfire or sung by hobbits. Extra credit though for introducing me to the phrase “harry rag”

solid mid

I’m a middle of the road Kinks fan. I generally like their sound, but wouldn’t write home about them. Nothing wrong with this album, but also not a standout for any reason.

Much more pleasant and interesting than Face to Face immediately before it, a likeable '60s rock album if less unique or groundbreaking than their other contemporaries

afternoon tea more like afternoon Celsius.. or I'd catch afternoon z's

Don't see any reason why I'd listen to this when Village Green Preservation Society exists but it's still overall pleasant but just soooo British... I'd rather listen to SOMETHING ELSE hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahah Fav song: Waterloo Sunset or Lazy Old Sun

When did harpsichords become de rigeour for pop albums in the 60s?

Beatles

Now I wish I hadn't given Arthur or the Decline… 3 stars because that one is better. Anyhow, this is decent enough, but it's a bit disappointing given that the talent level seems higher than the actual output. (Except Waterloo Sunset that is, which is lighyears ahead the rest of the songs.)

405/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Good album, not my favorite from them

It's not Lola is it.

Great first song and the rest was just a music at a 1980s diner vibe. Favourite Song: David Watts

I quite enjoyed this album. I am gonna drink to the death of a clown the day Trump dies

Love The Kinks.

#112 - it's ok, like a sort of edgier Beatles

I really like the kinks and this seems to be an unplugged album. I’m not sure why it’s on here. I think there’s other albums by them that are so much better. It’s like the person who did the list wants us to know that there’s another side of the kinks. The last song Waterloo Sunset is great and I had heard that one before. Otherwise, it was completely new to me.

I have always respected the Kinks. I always thought these guys were the underground The Beatles. They could/should have been as big as the Beatles or Rolling Stones. Great tunes and songwriting. Pretty cool album. Nothing really stood out to me. I stopped after 8 tracks. 3-stars

A mid 3s album for me. Death of a Clown is amazing and Waterloo Sunset a perfect song. A very solid album. Kinks underrated in my books.

Was hoping to hear some Lola but not on this album. Definitely more avant-garde, experimental vibes here. Wikipedia calls it a "trend toward an eccentric baroque pop and music hall-influenced style", so... sure. Nothing super interesting but nothing that great either.

Quite like early-mid Beatles. A couple of memorable songs, but most are quite samey. 3.5/5

Kinks aren't bad.

This is one of the biggest time capsules on this list I've had so far. A certain camp charm, very middle English. Nothing really stood out apart from Waterloo Sunset.

Something Else By The Kinks Не дивно, що саме звідси виросте наступний великий шедевр гурту - The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. Something Else By The Kinks здавався надто «скромним» та непомітним. Але ця стриманість дозволила йому постаріти значно «красивіше» ніж багатьом іншим гучним тогочасним релізам.

Is it just me, or was "Tin Soldier Man" the inspiration for the Spongebob Squarepants theme song?

No exceptional tracks on here but some skips. In general OK

Its good Not as good as I thought it was gonna be, but good. Kinks have been slightly disappoting for me when I've tried to get into them in this project. They are good but im always waiting for something to blow me away. If something like Strangers was on this, i be blown away 3

Kinda sorta disappointing. The Kinks are really good this album just feels really samey throughout.

The Kinks 2nd day in a row. Yesterday I got Arthur. I don't know if 2 days in a row is just too much, or this is album is not as good as Arthur. I think the latter. It has some good songs, not many great ones, and some songs are too cheesy for me. Favorite song: Waterloo Sunset.

A solid album with a lot of variety. Favorite track: "Lazy Old Sun"

Rolig og let hyggeligt. Siger mig dog ikke det store.

Waterloo Sunset is an outstanding tune, everything else is OK.

Pretty fun album

In their classic run, I've often thought this is the weakest - and another listen didn't change my mind. It is the weakest because it is so uneven, and probably as a result of the fact it's the only one in that feted run that couldn't be argued as a concept album. I liked some of the tracks very much, and the ones I didn't particularly like just passed me by.

A great representation of a couple years into the British invasion. Never heard any of it but it all felt familiar. 3.5

A pretty fun Chamber pop album. Could find myself liking this with a few more listens

This album was okay. Nothing to write home about. “Something Else” has broken my epic album streak. I won’t listen to an album today because I’m in hospital. Hopefully, I’ll listen to the next one tomorrow. 3 stars for “Something Else by the Kinks”.

= to the Beatles Trying hard to be the Beatles

These guys remind me a lot of the Beatles, so part way through this album I was really enjoying it…but there were some clunkers in there that dragged it down to a three.

It's a bit dull but alright

weird and only mostly in the good way. could i write poetry to this? n

As this project goes on, the repeated appearance of certain artists becomes more and more irritating. This is the third album from the Kinks that we have reviewed and they are all from the same era. All three are virtually identical.

I'm glad I gave this a second listen. I didn't really click with it the first time. My third Kinks album so far in doing this. Not as crazy about this as Face To Face and Arthur. This was pretty good too, but I guess for my taste I wanted something more energetic and proto-punkish. This is a pretty mellow album and it makes it feel more dated. But there are some bangers here. I do like the Kinks a lot even if this one wasn't a huge hit with me.

64/100.

It’s impossible for me to listen to The Kinks without thinking about their massive influence on Britpop, but particularly Blur. Damon Albarn took Ray Davies’ character sketches and comic scenes of English life and la la la’s and ran. I’m not English so I don’t understand it in my bones but I have a soft spot for these kinds of wry, whimsical slices of life. And I am kind of an Anglophile… just the good parts! So coming at The Kinks via Blur, even when this album gets really silly (that sea shanty Harry Rag, Tin Soldier Man) it doesn’t lose me. But really, when I’m in the mood for this sort of thing I’ll just put on Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, and The Great Escape. David Watts - I know this from The Jam album All Mod Cons and forgot it was a Kinks song til now. I prefer The Jam’s cover - it has more bite. Death of a clown - Kind of a Dylan song? Love me til the sun shines - these lyrics kind of suck. Afternoon Tea - this is the most English thing I’ve ever heard. I love it. Waterloo Sunset - Saved the best for last. Beautiful, classic song.
