Reviews (page 5 of 8)
I like The Kinks. I like this album. But I don't love it. And it's not my fault. It's a man named Nathan's fault. Many years ago I was part of a trivia team and that trivia team was 5 guys in their 60s and me. I didn't get a lot of questions right because the trivia was very boomer centric, but it was a good time. It was sort of a ghosts of Christmas future situation, in a good way. They were all music guys who had lived in Toronto since their 20s. I think they saw their past in me and I saw my future in them. It was great and I miss it. Anyways, there was one guy there who had a very hot take and that take was that "The Kinks are better than The Beatles and they deserve the acclaim and respect that society has heaped on The Beatles." No one else at the table seemed to share this opinion, and had already made up their mind that society got it right and The Beatles were in fact better. At the time, I did not know The Kinks that well. At most I knew the hits: You Really Got Me, Lola and Sunny Afternoon. O, and I knew A Well Respected Man because it was on the Juno soundtrack. It also is probably still my favourite Kinks song. I could watch Michael Cera get ready to that song forever. Anyways, my lack of Kinks knowledge left me open to this hot take. I had my doubts but I said okay, i'll give it a go. So he recommended a few albums for me to check out. The one that sticks with me is The Kinds Are the Village Green Preservation Society. It's supposed to be their Sgt. Peppers. I'm not sure that it's better than Peppers, but it is a great album. So then I spent the next month diving into The Kinks, going through all their big albums, testing his claim... and ya, there stuff is good. Great even. I definitely listened to this album at the time. I love Waterloo Sunsets. It's a beautiful pop song. I actually discovered a bunch of great Kinks songs at the time, so I am glad that I listened to Nathan. Butttt they're just not The Beatles damnit. They can't hold up to that comparison. No band can really. It's not fair to The Kinks to have someone listen to their music with that bold ass take looming over them. It's too much pressure. They don't have the hooks, the sonic variety, the relatability, the charisma, the consistency. Nathan was wrong in my books. Society got it right. And now every time I listen to The Kinks, I think about this take and mutter to myself "they're no beatles." And fair or not, that's how I felt about this record. It's no beatles... but it is a solid album. It's pleasant while it's on, it sounds great, there are some catchy tunes... but it just doesn't stick with me. It doesn't help that it came out the same year as Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery tour. It just can't compete with those records. Sorry, I must try to consider this album in isolation. I must kill the shadow of the take. So ya, there aren't really any bad songs on this album, but many of them blur into each other. And Waterloo Sunset is just so much better than the rest of the album, it's a supernova swallowing the rest of the album hole (I guess that would make A Day In the Life the big bang allowing this album to exist). There were a few other tracks that stuck with me a bit: Death of a Clown, Two Sisters (this might be my second favourite song on the album, love the organ and the melody on "jealous of her sister") and Harry Rag (has a good baseline, good refrain). The rest are just solid. Maybe it would grow on me over time? I dunno. Side note: A comparison that came to me while listening to the record that's not a pure 1 to 1, but in Brit Pop... Oasis are The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are Blur... which leaves The Kinks as Pulp... the underrated band from that time that has a die hard contingent claiming they are the best band of the genre. I guess that would make You Really Got Me their Common People. Anyways, I hope someday I can put aside The Beatles comparison and just enjoy The Kinks for what they are. But that day is not today. 3 stars.
Ambitious with hints of the quirky and cheeky side of The Beatles. Even still, they don't quite pull it off. 3 stars
Cheap Beatles, except for sunny afternoon, true banger. Also the deluxe version has way too much titles, listened to each song 3 times because of it, the radio one is a true pearl for the speaker
Although it sounds more like "Something Dated By The Kinks" to me - "Death Of A Clown" and "Waterloo Sunset" make it a weak three stars album for me. 2,5
It's aight
I find The Kinks to be pretty hit and miss, and this one is pretty middle of the road. Just your average 60s pop rock, but somehow there's still something about it that makes it at least a little bit better than the rest of the slop that was being made at the time.
The original title of this was actually (Oh No, Not) Something Else By The Kinks! Len Houmous doctored the paperwork as a prank. It cost millions in legal battles to get it changed back. 2.6 2. DEATH OF A CLOWN
Its pleasant, but very stereotypical 60's-70's music. It could have been the Beatles, The Who...really any British rock band of this timeframe that did a few drugs, but not so many that it became crazy psychedelic. I liked it but nothing grabbed me as fantastic.
Favourite song: Waterloo sunset. I had known Waterloo sunset for a while and it’s a great song but the rest of the album fell short of it for me. Still liked it and think it would be worth a second listen where I’m paying more attention to it. 7.0/10
Far from their best work, Waterloo Sunset however…
I like the kinks, but this one is not as solid as some of my their other albums.
Not the most thrilling Kinks album. I love the Kinks and there are some great songs on this album, but it doesn't seem to have the cohesion that some other Kinks album and albums from other artists at the time had. Can't help but feel that this album could've had a little more oomph to it than it does. Still a pleasant enough listen from the Classic R&B British Invasion era from a band of brilliant songmakers.
7/10 I mostly listen for the music and not the lyrics. Thats why this gets only a high 3, because the lyricism is excellent. The production is just a bit dated and maybe not as inventive as certain contemporaries. Highlights: Waterloo Sunset Two Sisters Harry Rag Situation Vacant Afternoon Tea
The songwriter shows lots of potential, but they were trying too hard to change their reputation, and created a mediocre album musically. From the sounds of it the music rayed mediocre. Tried to hard to remain pop than committing to the song.
Meh. 2.6
Solid album. Waterloo Sunset is of course the standout, but the rest of the tunes turned out ok.

Pretty enjoyable.
Nothing special. Waterloo sunset is decent, I guess.
If they'd laid off the harpsichord it would have been 4 stars.
The Kinks really called the album Something Else because even they knew it wasn’t ‘something great.’
Was OK. Not much else to say about it. Didn't do much for me.
Easy listening. Could put it on in the background while doing other things. Can't say I recognize any of the songs. But I might have to bust out "Death of a Clown" when you know who finally kicks the bucket.
Beach Boys - Beatles - 60’s
It’s not that it’s bad music but that it feels childish the way some of Bach’s work feels against some of Chopin’s works. It is insightful how far “Rock” has changed to what we know it as now. It would also be a disservice to not acknowledge that without these early influential bands, we would not be where we’re currently at, for better or for worse.
boring.
Pure fun Brit Pop-rock. Some cool structured psychedelia mixed in with witty narrative lyrics.
Very listenable
More enjoyable but unmemorable classic rock
Something Else By The Kinks is an interesting title that's given to a pretty good album. As far as i have heard, The Kinks do seem to be yet another Beatles clone which were more than prevalent during the 60s and they have a lot of the things you would expect from The Beatles including all the quirkiness. I'd honestly say the worst part of this album is something that isn't really the band's fault that being the recording quality but this is to be expected considering this album came out in the 1960s. The songs still sound quirky and full of energy and the album was short so i still found quite a bit to like about this album. Best Song: Situation Vacant Worst Song: Death of a Clown
Don’t mind the Kinks.
It's okay.
There are a lot of popular Kinks songs which I know, but somehow none of them appear on this album. This is a perky fast moving album from the 60s, and on a 1-10 it would rate 7 out of 10. But I think I will round it down to a 3.
Always good music bit this was not their best album. A bit too popish and commercial. Dave rocks
Pretty good
Mom can we listen to the Beatles? "We already have the beatles at home." The Beatles at home:
Very 60s, a little Beach Boys-esque. It's ok, but nothing really stood out to me.
Bit twee on reflection, albeit with an all time great to finish. Actually managed to listen through this twice today. Enjoyed it more the first time, and it would've earned a 4. A slight downgrade after the second spin.
Beatlecore copy cat 3/5
This wasn't bad. Short but with OK variety and songs that aren't about standard 60s stuff. A little dime-a-dozen for the time but the clown song bumps this up. 2.5/5 -> 3/5
This is certainly in the better half of 60s' pop rock, but at this point, considering how far rock has evolved past that, this style is so outdated that I can't imagine preferring this over some more modern alternatives. Also, stereo... I hate aggressive use of stereo. 7/10
pretty good.
I like a lot of stuff by the Kinks but this didn’t grab me. Waterloo Sunset is still an amazing track.
Good album, if unremarkable in the long run
Good album. Not really anything special that I could see, nothing particularly memorable, but I enjoyed it enough while I was listening to it.
I don’t think I’d ever heard “afternoon tea.” I liked it.
Nice
Compared to other 60s UK canon bands, the Kinks sound so English it almost seems like a bit.
A bunch of pleasant weirdness, not as good as what the Beatles were putting out but still enjoyable. Waterloo Sunset is an obvious classic
This album felt like it went on forever, and not in a good way. The Kinks have a nice sound, almost like if the Beatles wanted to write songs that might also work as chants at football match. The problem is that some of them are catchy and fun, and some of them are bland and forgettable. And by the time you’ve listened to an hour of this, the forgettable ones seem to be piled pretty high.
Fun and enjoyable and strange.
its alright
I like The Kinks, but this album is honestly just ok.
6/10
Bloated (unless I got the deluxe!). It shows you how far music has come.
77% Best: David Watts; Situation Vacant; Love Me Till the Sun Shines; Funny Face Must-Hear? Not quite
I got into a couple of the tracks: "No Return" and "Lazy Old Sun". Both have really interesting chord progressions. Interesting that both of these songs have relatively low number of Plays on Spotify. The popular track (Waterloo Sunset) is also pretty good. This album is a high-3 for me.
Plays more like a bunch of outtakes from Sgt. Pepper era Beatles songs. At times that is sort of loose and fun, but as often it feels sort of half-baked and lazy.
Seems like they're having fun but I never got into it.
Love the Kinks but maybe more of a greatest hits type guy? I feel like this album could make it to a 4 though, there's some great classics on here.
Learnt that one of my favourite Jam songs was not a PW original. Only other track I liked was Waterloo Station.
Parhaat: Death of a Clown, Two Sisters, Waterloo Sunset
It's fine throughout. The last song is the only one I recognized but also easily the best. Will I listen to again: 15%
Alright on the whole kind of middling Kinks album. This continues the trend of me finding the 60s stuff way more drab than I expected it to be; I understand why they released the best songs of that decade as standalone singles outside of albums. It’s hard to rate this album objectively because Waterloo Sunset is one of the greatest songs ever written and is worth 5 stars on its own, but the rest of the album pulls it down to a 3 for me.
3/5
Mix the kitchy sound of the early Beatles with the darker side of the later Beatles and you get this album by The Kinks. While the music is upbeat and fun the lyrics are mostly melancholy.
Yeh pretty good. Waterloo sunset a banger 7/10
Kinks good. This is not one of my favorites of theirs, but it's still good.
Not a bad album, but nothing special to me.
3/5
cute & harmless
Lying on a 60’s country hill in England tripping balls on LSD. It’s fine
*check notes* hmm, OK *copy/paste previous Kinks review* There you go.
meh it's just the beetles
I like the kinks, and I'm embarrassed enough to admit I like having their greatest hits. And Soap Opera. This album had stuff that did not land for me.
Day 5 and counting of British rock, but this was a fun boppy album! Kinda feels like Beatles-lite but not quite as prolific? Nothing overly spectacular but just a fun old-school album to listen to and found myself singing along with some of the ba-ba-bas and la-la-las. Liked David Watts, Two Sisters, Afternoon Tea and Waterloo Sunset. Good background music or filler on a dinner party playlist.
I feel like a broken record but this is another odd choice. Its a decent album but hardly their best (or even in the top handful). Still, there are some great songs (e.g., Waterloo Sunset, obviously, and David Watts - though the the Jam do a better cover of the latter) mixed in with an otherwise unremarkable collection. That said, you've got to love a 60's rock album with no songs longer than 3 minutes
This has a lot of that British sing-songy thing that I can’t stand but oh well. Waterloo Sunset was good.
This has some good songs but it’s not a rocker. I would have preferred that.
I'm not sure what makes this one "great". It feels like a total Beatles Revolver/Sgt. Pepper knock off, which was a very common thing for British bands to do during this time but there are some abitious ideas in here to show that they were moving beyond their garage rock beginnings. Reminds me a lot of the Zombies' Oracle and Oddessy which we will be hearing at some point. I like the "story songs" with characters and narratives, but the music itself was hit or miss for me. "Waterloo Sunset" is the clear highlight for me (maybe biased cuz I knew it before) but "Harry Rag" sounded like musical theater.
FAVO: Harry Rag, Tin Soldier Man, Afternoon Tea, Waterloo Sunset,
Groovy 60s sound but meh. Maybe I'm just not feeling it today.
The wanna Beatles had a few decent tracks but even their best is no better than a demo track by their role models.
My second Kinks album. It's ok but I liked the concept album better.
Never was a fan of this type of electronica.
Only knew Waterloo sunset going in, not as taken by the rest of the album but not an unpleasant listen. One song felt like it might have inspired Some might say by oasis.
It’s ok. I think, like a lot of ‘legendary’ ‘60s bands, The Kinks benefitted from first-mover advantage and their status has been cemented as far greater than it would be if they were formed today. It’s far from bad, but it’s far from good as well, it’s just very mid. Waterloo Sunset stands so far above the rest of the album in quality that it really shows how average the rest is.
This is how I imagine the pitch meeting for this album: Ray: Hey I got a pile of charming McCartneyish ditties about working class daily life. Record exec: You’re contractually obligated to include one sorta psychedelic mumble about the sun. Ray: (drag on a rollie; slurp of tea) Ok but it will suck.
++: David Watts, No Return, Tin Soldier Man, Situation Vacant, Love Me Till the Sun Shines, End of the Season, Waterloo Sunset +: Death of a Clown, Harry Rag, Lazy Old Sun, Afternoon Tea, Funny Face +-: Two Sisters 7,6/10
Some fun sounds. Like an edgier Beetles.
The Kinks really beginning to settle into their baroque era and take control of their sound with Davies producing as well now. Not the most interesting music in the world, but crucial building for modern music
Waterloo Sunset drags this up to 3 stars, but it all sounds a little dated to be honest.
Boring repetitive British rock.
The Kinks are the English version of the Beachboys - Waterloo Sunset is a classic!
David Watts and Waterloo Sunset are great songs. Rest ok too 3/5
The album title seems to sum it up, another something by the Kinks that feels like the same old thing (as the predecessor album Face to Face). Not bad, not amazing. I think I liked it best when they fully leaned into the concept album so I'll wait for the Village Green (the third of four consecutive Kinks albums on this list) before giving out another 4 (or higher). I most enjoyed David Watts (fun and poppy), Death of a Clown (maybe), Harry Rag (I don't know why), Tin Solider Man (simple and silly), Love Me Till the Sun Shines (most rock-oriented...good basslines), and Funny Face (poppy and almost rocky). Critics retrospectively loved this period of the Kinks. I think I'm like the masses - a bit indifferent on this period and more preferring them before and after.
Significantly better than "Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)". Still a few weak tunes. This gains a 3/5.
Classic kinks. Like em if you like em
Enjoyable album of 60s British pop from The Kinks. My favorite track was the hard-rocking "Love Me Till the Sun Shines." The production on some of these songs feels a little thin or something to me. There were times when I liked the songs but wished I loved them and I wasn't sure if it was the songwriting or the production that was lacking.
Not bad. Not great either.
Maybe 2.5 stars would be the most optimal rating here.
Ok, but not very interesting
Fun little art-pop record. Certainly wasn’t expecting bossa nova from a British Invasion band but here we are.
Not bad, not that interesting
It was a decent album. A few songs I liked. Would I listen to it in its entirety again, no. 3.4 stars for me.
Cheerful and jaunty but boring.
I find this style of music mostly boring, but not really bad - so in many ways I don't really like or enjoy listening to it, but I also don't actively dislike it and want it turned off. It's the same feeling with a lot of Beatles music too. Standouts Tin Soldier Man 3/5
I expected more out of this one. It was pretty lad back.
Bit of a slog for me to get through. Liked other albums by them though.
I had an earlier Kinks album on here a while back and I felt that while it had early signs of what the Kinks would become later, it was just OK. So I was cautious approaching this one as well. In fact I put it off for a while as I was just not sure it would be that "interesting." To my surprise it is more in line with the later Kink stuff I like more and was pretty entertained by it. I probably would have given a two and a half star rating to the former album and a three and a half to this one so that is technically a one star improvement, although on the site itself it will seem they share a rating. (another good reason to just read quickly through what people write!)
I am only 340 albums in and this is my fourth album by The kinks. All the rest I settled on a three or two and this one is no different.
Good
1. "David Watts" 2,5 2. "Death of a Clown" (R. Davies, Dave Davies) 2,4 3. "Two Sisters" 2,4 4. "No Return" 1,8 5. "Harry Rag" 2,7 6. "Tin Soldier Man" 2,3 7. "Situation Vacant" 2,6 1. "Love Me Till the Sun Shines" (D. Davies) 2,5 2. "Lazy Old Sun" 2,6 3. "Afternoon Tea" 2,9 4. "Funny Face" (D. Davies) 2,7 5. "End of the Season" 2,2 6. "Waterloo Sunset" 3,8 Average 2,57
Very cool sounds, I think I'm going to have to listen to it again to appreciate the individual tracks. Unfortunately after having listened to it all of the songs melted together in my mind.
What a disappointment; 3 stars for Waterloo Sunset alone (one of the best songs of all time) but the rest is just dreck.
Pretty standard for the times. There’s a reason they didn’t blow up to the same level as the Beatles and other relevant bands at the time.
Enjoyed it. Solid but didn’t jump out.
Classic. Not my favorite Kinks though
Not my taste, but still good! Sorta 70’s maybe???
Generally enjoyed this album. It definitely captures the sound of the late 60s British Invasion movement. Simple, catchy rock songs with a hint of psychadellic influence. Overall- a nice album
7/10
The kinks are just a vibe man
7/10 Highlights: Death of a Clown Two Sisters Lazy Old Sun Waterloo Sunset
7/10 Highlights Two Sisters End of the Season Waterloo Sunset
There’s nothing wrong with this album, but not many songs present themselves as essential either. Kind of like a second rate Beatles, nice to listen to while having afternoon tea with your aunt and her friends
It was a decent album, but I didn't find it memorable enough to listen to it again. 3.5 stars
Klingt wie die Beatles, aber ok.
Boos: Death of a clown, Harry Rag, lazy old sun, Bops : Waterloo sunset Slaps as much as a soft willy
It sounds a bit like Beatles?
Another solid offering by protorockers The Kinks. 3.5 stars.
Not as great as later era Kinks, but still a worth while listen. Waterloo fantastic. 3.5/5
Waterloo Sunset is one of the best
My challenge is to review this album without referencing the Beatles (more than this once). As a Kinks fan I wasn't feeling this one. The Kinks are at their best when they pair their anti-imperialiast lyrics with their almost-punk fuzzy production to take the piss out of the British Empire. The sharp lyrics were here but the production worked against the boys, making them sound more petulant than snarky.
This was a pleasant listen. I don’t think it’s as good or interesting as “The Village Green Preservation Society”. It the songs are the right length for easy consumption and performed well. There’s a couple of genre shifts (“No Return” sounds like a British person throttled a samba song) which is appreciated. Other than that it’s kind of unremarkable. I don’t hate it. I don’t love it. It’s a solid 3-.
Hard to avoid calling out the similarities to the Beatles, but I don’t see what that should be a bad thing. This is fresh, light, funny, delightful, and sometimes downright catchy. I think the length of the album gets in the way and there is some fat to trim.
Not bad. Fun somewhat goofy/weird rock.
I listened to some of this but wasn't thrilled 3 stars
This one sorta passed me by. I didn't engage too much with it, so nothing stuck out. I am often surprised by Kinks output not sounding like I think they should sound, but that's a "me" problem. 3/5
The Kinks are a band that I’ve always known existed, but never heard anything from them besides the hits. This album has, I think, a couple hits for them but not ones I knew already. So this was a treat. The album is good. Nothing blew me away here. It carries their very Kinks sound with some witty lyrics, catchy riffs, and sometimes bombastic arrangements. But nothing blew me away here. This is a solid three stars. Standout Tracks: David Watts, Situation Vacant, Waterloo Sunset
Unremarkable. Could have been better albums here.
Kind of interesting kind of annoying
I'm a Kinks fan but admitt they are a hit/miss kinda band. This is a miss. These songs play like children's music. They were famous for their concept albums, so this may have been some kind of spoof? Experiment? Idk I love pthe records like 'Aurthur' or 'Village Green' in fact their next four records greatly outdo this one
Somehow, I was expecting something a little more exciting .. or .. kinky, maybe? Last track was great though.
Fun tracks, but not too memorable.
Good for the Kinks
Initial reaction: I like The Kinks, but apparently not this album as much. It's whimsical, but maybe not whimsical enough to be interesting? Later: It grew on me with repetition. Waterloo Sunset is pretty great, though. FYI, a harry rag is a cigarette - tobacco or pot. One of my least favorites on the album.
Ok - a few songs are working today, too. Other not.
Waterloo Sunset has always been a favourite of mine. The intro to the song has such a tight sound and a warm feeling. The album doesn't hold to that level and does meander some. It was influential and deserves some respect.
I was looking forward to check out the Kinks, but this just isn't working for me. The instrumentation is pretty good, but I'm just not in the mood for the silliness of most of this. I'm kind of digging Lazy Old Sun and Waterloo Sunset
I liked it, but I was expecting more - it felt very dated and I found it lacking in pace.
Kinks cool. Nerd rock.
This is my third Kinks album. I think the Kinks belong on this list but THREE of their albums with possibly more to come?! I think the author's English point of view and bias are showing. (yet again) This wasn't great and it wasn't bad. It hits a nice spot and was a fun and enjoyable listen.
Nothing really stood out to me on this one. 3/5
Seems to be a bunch of songs by the Davies brothers about their classmates. Some interestingly ambiguous lyrics in "David Watts," and "Waterloo Sunset" is a nice enough song. Overall this is just a meh.
I don’t think the Kinks are Better than the Beatles but I do think they’re Cooler than the Beatles. Not my favourite one, but fun nonetheless.
Yeah fine
Beat, 1967 -> 3
This is probably what The Piper at the Gates of Dawn sounds like to people who don't like it. This album was fine, fun at times, gentle. I hear sounds of early Pink Floyd and even Beatles in this. Also I enjoyed hearing a Hammond organ, I always do.
Some great baroque pop but probably I’m only coming back to waterloo sunset
Proto punk
Second Kinks album for me (Village Green Presevation Society was first one) and as I wrote then this is another album filling me with load of nostalgia and yearnings for times gone by. It’s ages since I’ve heard a lot of the tracks on this album. I’d forgotten just how good Death of a Clown is. Everyone knows how good Waterloo Sunset is and the fact it is on this album elevates it another star for me. It’s knocking on the door of 4 stars but as I rated VGPS 3 which is perhaps better album as a whole, cannot go higher than that. And there’s Arthur yet to come with is a definite 4. 3/5 16/6/24
A fun jaunt with my guys The Kinks, but it didn't knock me over like some of their other albums on the list. It does include "Waterloo Sunset", a perfect, life-affirming song, which almost got me to bump the score up a star. Highlights: David Watts, No Return, Situation Vacant, Waterloo Sunset
This was just ok. Sounded like the beatles
This Kinks album was not really that impressive, but maybe because I've gotten 60s pop all week. I think it's weaker than the other Kinks album Ive had, the Zombies, and everything by the Beatles. Its just a little too silly for me to take seriously, even if there are interesting parts sprinkled around. I did like Afternoon Tea and Waterloo Sunset. There are other albums from this era I will come back to before this.
Pretty enjoyable and material didn’t seem dated, like it belonged in a particular era
Early British invasion, of mostly historical interest.
Fine Kinks album
Out of all the British Invasion bands of the 60s, The Kinks to me are the most British. American rock and blues influences are there but kept minimal compared to their British contemporaries at the time. A great example of pure English pop/rock from 1967. Plus Waterloo Sunset is a classic!
Don't think this album needs to be here. Waterloo Sunset is a nice track but for the rest of the album I found myself impressed at The Kinks ability to know one song from another as they're all so similar.
Pretty decent album. Waterloo Sunset is a goodie
It’sssssssss okay. Iiiiiiiii don’t really care about it. But it’s notttttttt bad.
The music hall influences I could leave, I don't get the fascination with it, but the rest is great. 3.5*
An easy to listen to album but not enough familiar song for me.
This is pretty good, but other than the last track most of it doesn't feel essential. I wish the production or mixing was a bit better. At times it's quite a dark, even dissonant album though. And I always find it interesting when the biggest song is the last one. Standouts: Death of a Clown, Tin Soldier Man, Afternoon Tea & of course Waterloo Sunset, which is worth *** on its own.
I'm so glad to not be burned out by the Kinks like I'm burned out by the Beatles, it means there's still fresh high quality rock music from the 60s I can enjoy. Solid 3 stars for this album.
3.4
Of all of the British invasion regularly brought up and celebrated by Big Important Music Critics™, I've always had the hardest times with The Kinks. Up until now I've never exactly had a grasp on why, but I think I've finally managed to come to a answer—simply, they're the most British. No other big British invasion group (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who) are as British as The Kinks. It's in the tone, the riffs, the melodies, the lyrics... It's **British**. Not a lick of American skiffle, blues or hard rock in there. It's partly why, I'm sure, they're as regarded as they are. For my money, though... Mm, I'unno. Here, on The Kinks albums we've heard so far, it just really hasn't clicked with me. Hell, I'm not sure I click with extremely British music in general until Britpop in the 90's. Y'know, there there's bombast, bigness. On something like this album, meanwhile, it's a lot smaller, restrained... And I don't wanna say it's "simpler" given that this is some premo psychedelic music hall stuff, but it just feels that way to me. Of course every now and then there's something I can fully get behind. "Waterloo Sunset" is regularly highlighted as the best song on the album and for damn good reason. That's the one where the riffs and all work for me. But for the majority, it's good stuff, but not anything I'm really clamoring to get back to. And I don't think they should've had more American influence like the Beatles, Stones and Who just to appeal to my dumb ass, but... I mean, since they don't, I'll tend more towards who does.
Very 67. David Watts, Death of a clown, Situation vacant, Lazy old sun
Because I've only ever heard "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks before (a song that I'm admittedly not a big fan of), I was expecting something sort of hard rocky out of this album. Boy, how wrong I was. There's an undeniable charm to the simplicity of both the lyrics and instrumentals here, something common among pop-rock groups in the 60s; it reminded me a lot of earlier Beatles records. My enjoyability here varied from song to song, I'll start with the ones I really liked. Early on, I love the song "Death of a Clown" with this almost surreal backing vocal melody over Ray's metaphorical depictions of the soul-sucking aspects of show business, likening it to the shallow one-trick routines of a clown. The following "Two Sisters" might be the most striking song here, I wish more songs sounded like it. For one, I like the hypnotic harpsichord paired with one of the most haunting vocal melodies on the album. I'd say it's unsettling if it weren't for the wholesome message here; a story of two sisters (paralleling Dave and Ray's brother dynamic) learning to be content with themselves and their differences. I also really liked the song "Situation Vacant". Over a more straightforward rock groove, this song tells the story of a man handicapping himself to keep his mother-in-law satisfied, digging himself into a deep, irredeemable hole after a divorce by the end. I love the fact that this otherwise depressing song sounds super cheerful. Quite a few songs near the beginning are quite enjoyable, like "Harry Rag" and "Tin Foil Man". It's really in the second half where this album begins to lose me. I found the more straightforward production on a song like "End of the Season" for example to be very drab. For how short it is, I do feel like this album's ideas and variance is limited. Not to say the songs are bad, it's just that I won't be revisiting the more conventional pop-rock songs in the second half of this album. The very obvious exception to this is "Waterloo Sunset", a serene closer and maybe one of the best 60s pop-rock songs I've ever heard. I'm eager to check out more The Kinks records because I'm sure they still have a lot more of these infectious and ambition-sounding songs in their catalog. And while I do enjoy the psychedelic edge and insightful lyrics here, I can't say everything I heard on this album blew me away.
Intriguing how much similarities in sound the Kinks have to some Beatles songs of the similar era, while the Kinks clearly stayed in only that area, at least for this album. Cool vibes, amusing lyrics and tone, but a little too much of the same.
A few notes. One, I feel like I already had this album, or at least one with Waterloo Sunset on it. Two, I'm starting to believe the Kinks were the original Oasis. Or the Davies brothers were the original Gallagher brothers. And three, are we sure The Kinks weren't just a great singles band? Their albums are good, but aside from one in particular, none really resonate overall. That said, the aforementioned Waterloo Sunset is an all-timer.
Lembra os beatles
I've always liked the Kinks. Even outside of their hits, they have a quirky humor and unique perspective to their music. You would do well to look past the greatest hits selections and dig a little deeper into their catalog. Goodness awaits there.
Not bad but I think 1 Kinks record on the list should've been enough, this one ain't it
solid. up and down. some great tracks and some dodgy ones.
Had never heard that album before. I enjoyed it, but it's not something that I'm going to actively seek out to put on; but I'll keep it in the archive for random play
Charming and cock-er-nee, but also dated. Waterloo Sunset is still great though.
This was cool, made me feel like i was shooting dope in someones living room in the 60s. At the end of the day though, not my thing.
Not super amazing but a fairly pleasant listen. I was content sitting and working to this for an hour. 7/10
5/10 - Not as good as the other kinks album but still pretty good.
Kinda just boring, not terrible though 6/10
Ray Davies' muscial hall sensibilities begin to make themselves more obvious on this album, but his rock/pop bona fides can't quite be covered yet. Like most Kinks' albums a real mix of classics and throwaways. However, the classics are CLASSICS. Best Tracks: David Watts; Death of a Clown; Waterloo Sunset
If they would've called their album before this one 'Something', then I would've given this one 4 stars.
Tin Soldier Man // Waterloo Sunset //
S'écoute mais sans plus.
A fun collection of 60’s songs
I’m not a big fan
Not bad, a few good tracks but nothing super memorable outside of maybe Waterloo Sunset.
Such a talented, under-rated, ahead-of-their-time band. Though, this album is so-so.
bom
nteresting. Seems like a parallel to Sgt. Pepper's in some respects.
All the songs were solid and enjoyable. No great hits but no bad songs either.
Ahh, the Kinks. Sometimes good, sometimes great. This time, it's forgettable.
Pretty good
Lacks a bit of the spark and danger of the Beatles, and they don’t sing nearly as well
Meh
It's fine. Good, but not riding my socks off.
Definitely a 67 rock album. Sounds like they just started taking acid and can't wait to tell you about it.
J: 3 N:4
Just my opinion.
I like the Kinks but they pale a bit against their contemporaries. They seem to think they are super clever and naughty, but it's not much, and I'd rather listen to The Who, Rolling Stones or Beatles.
I enjoyed the faster songs on here, which surprised me because I struggle with a lot of 60's albums. Slower songs are the reason the rating is dragged down.
2.5
It reminded me a lot about The Beatles. But The Beatles sang about love, peace, etc. In this album I heard about alcohol and fun times. 3.5/5.
Meh
Easy to listen to. First song is cool
Very honkytonk-esque. Kinks really changed through the years too bad the brothers had to fight so much. Maybe that's why they varied musically so much?
Decent, Beatleishh
Favourite songs: Harry Rag, Autumn Almanac, Love Me Till The Sun Shines, Waterloo Sunset, Act Nice and Gentle, Death of a Clown, Tin Soldier Man, Afternoon Tea, Lincoln County Least favourite songs: Lazy Old Sun, No Return 3/5
“This is fine” was all I kept thinking as I listened to this. Sixties’ Britpop has mostly worn out its welcome for me. I’m sure this is a good album and deserves to be here, but it didn’t do much for me.
Good start, weak middle strong end but wow does it sound like a album of Beatles b sides
Another 3 stars, but probably my favourite so far.
Three great songs. Waterloo sunset, David Watts and Death of a clown. Then filler. This album highlights the weakness of the concept. How can you not have Waterloo sunset, but when most of the album is dull ….
Honestly not an album for sitting and listening.bit too old and folky for me. I am more into their hits. Cover art interesting if you look at it carefully.
Waterloo Sunset is one of the great 60’s pop songs. Terry(Stamp) & Julie(Christie) immortalised in a way I’m sure they never expected to be. It takes me back to being on a school bus travelling from Fox Hills golfcourse to Parramatta Marist on a sports afternoon in 1967. One of those magic moments. But, for me it’s the only real standout on this album. The album stiffed worldwide. My vinyl copy was a reissue on the cheapie Australian label, Summit, with the title changed to Waterloo Sunset. I mean, okay David Watts & Death Of A Clown were both good singles, although neither charted in Sydney. I love Harry Rag, but mainly remember it as a staple of Sydney jug-band The 69’ers. I saw them perform it at Sunbury in 1973 - it’s on the triple album Mushroom Records released of the festival highlights. I’m sure Ray Davies lyrics shine on a lot of the other tracks, but I don’t find them that engaging. Still, Waterloo Sunset - outstanding.
Edgy beatles were just okay I'm coming to realize the song writing is not a deciding factor for me. I need a sound the moves me first and foremost. This album is seen to be praised by its lyrics, those things are relevant to me on my first listen and idk if i feel like giving it a second.
Kinda boring but still enjoyable
Not my vibe per se
Before I started this project, I only knew a few songs by The Kinks, but I really liked the songs I knew, and I expected to really like their albums. This is the second album by The Kinks that I've gotten to review, and much like Face to Face, I thought this album was pretty middle of the road. The first three songs were easily the highlight of the album, especially "Two Sisters," but after that, the songs were at best, mildly interesting ("Love Me Till The Sun Shines" and "Situation Vacant") and at worst, boring ("Lazy Old Sun" and "Funny Face"). Thankfully, the album did close on a strong note with "Waterloo Sunset." They lyrics were the strongest aspect of this album, and "Two Sisters" and "David Watts" are the shining examples of that. Musically though, the album just didn't have much to offer, other than some decent organ and guitar playing. A year after Pet Sounds, and in the same year that we got Sgt. Pepper's, this album just doesn't really hold much of a candle to the things that The Kinks' peers were putting out.
I’m interested into why this was added to the list. The Kinks have many more albums that would’ve suited this list before this album. It feels like a bridge album between their pop/garage sound to their more psychedelic-influenced sound. It’s not very cohesive either. Nonetheless, I did enjoy this record.
Pretty enjoyable
I listened to the song Harry Rag twice. Not knowing what that is makes this song just insane. I found out later what it was but I'll let you enjoy the mystery yourself. I think I liked this album more than the previous Kinks album but maybe it's just because I'm more familiar with them now rather than actually thinking this album is better. They kinda remind me of The Strokes if they were in the 60s and I like The Strokes. Gotta imagine they are influenced by these guys in some form. Overall fun listen.
This was fine, but forgettable.
There's a jamboree sound to this record. It's a mixed bag with even some sea shanty songs - never a good sign. The Coral leaned heavy on this. It plodded along, apart from the singles. The three stars were for Waterloo Sunset alone.
Despite the dated sound, the album is overall pretty chill and a pleasant listen. Not much else to say, nothing really jumped out at me. Favorite tracks: Death of a Clown, Harry Rag
Pretty good
Not sure what I was expecting with this, knowing the Kinks only by their early big singles ... I didn't dislike it but it was kind of all over the place. Some songs seemed Beatles-y, some were Dylan-y, and some were these quirky very English songs that I understand they moved toward later in their career. Decent soundtrack for cooking dinner on a Sunday evening.
Some of the panning made me a little uncomfortable, but otherwise, this album was fine? I’m running out of new things to say in these reviews.
They sound right on point for the time
Overall good, no stand out songs
Fun and easy to digest album but a bit goofy and samey foe my tastes.
Feels like something I need more listens to Tin Soldier Man and Waterloo Sunset were very fun I enjoy Ray's vocals a lot 3? Stars? Maybe it will change
Fun album, I enjoyed experiencing the songs but would not listen again.
A little bland but not unpleasant.
Not my thing at all, but it's pretty decent for what it is.
My 3rd kinks album. Didn’t like this one as much as the others. I feel like this is only on the list because of Waterloo sunset
Waterloo sunset is a masterpiece. But among filler. Love The Kinks, just not this album so much.
I’m not a huge Kinks fan, but I enjoyed the variety of song styles on the album. 3/5 after 3 listens.
This was a quick and fun album. The strained vocals kind of got annoying but I enjoyed the piano and the upbeat tempo.
Few catchy bits
not a big kinks listener but it was alright
I'm always happy to hear some Kinks but this album isn't their strongest. It feels somewhere in between Face to Face and Village Green, both of which are better albums. Apparently this is a cult favorite but I don't see it. Certainly not bad at all, but hardly their best work.
I genuinely have the feeling I'm missing something. It's good, but not great. Some songs are better than others. Would love for someone to explain some day why this album is so revered amongst its peers.
Good Album. Theres nothing really bad but also nothing that impressed me that much. Good Listen!
Some very good songs, some weaker songs that bring it down to 3 stars. Much better than the previous Kinks albums we've had on the list.
Death of a Clown, hmm, jotenkin mennyt minulta ohi. Kova biisi, vähän kuin esi-Mott the Hooplea. Osa levystä nyt heijastaa 60-lukua parodiana itsestään. Mutta antaisinko alle 3/5 levylle, jolla on Waterloo Sunset?
My nomination for most dated lyric in history: there's a song on here where they make fun of a rich man for having a 24 inch TV, lol
Waterloo Sunset is great but the rest of the album is a little underwhelming, and I like The Jam's version of David Watts more.
I think it was actually better than I expected. the higher end of three but ultimately still unmemorable
Some nice piano parts!
I can't get over how much this sounds like a Beatles knockoff band. That may speak to the style of psychedelic brit rock more than the Kinks themselves, but I found myself wanting to listen to the Beatles over this. Not that there aren't good tracks here, but I think it's missing the special something that makes the Beatles so iconic.
It's a 3, in parts beatle-esque if I dare say.
i miss the village green 3.5/5
Apart from the timeless "Waterloo Sunset" I was unfamiliar with the rest of this album, even though "Death of a Clown" was also released as a single in 1967. Quite pleasant, but except for the aforementioned "Waterloo Sunset", I wasn't really that enamoured with the album.
Consecutive Kinks albums! I’m not complaining - let’s see what this one’s got… Hmmm it sounds Kinksian alright, but I’m not feeling it like I did with Arthur. A couple of tunes (Harry Rag, Afternoon Tea) stuck with me, but a lot of them, for whatever reason, just sounded ‘fine’. However, this album’s one allotted hit just happens to be one of the greatest songs ever written, and probably accounts for a large chunk of my 3.5 star rating.
Meh
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The Kinks make kids songs targeted to adults. Fun and silly. But that’s as deep as it gets.
The Kinks is an apt name - just very curious and interesting music. Feels like the musicians are playing a game amongst themselves and I’m just an eavesdropper - contrasts sharply with modern songs that often seem formulated for the broadest listener appeal. That being said - I rate on personal enjoyment so 3 stars - worth a listen but it won’t be making my regular rotation.
Nice album, though not their best I'd say.
3.5
Leads in with energetic David Watts -- fun number with all the good late 60s feel. Death of a Clown feels like Beatles song with less harmonizing. Kind of has that polka / carnival vibe going with almost a Dylan-esque vocal track. Not hating. Situation Vacant is a low-key jam. Once again, a similar Beatles feel. All in all, this feels like a solid enough 60s rock album that borrows a lot from the Beatles and folky influences of the time. Not the best from the Kinks that I have heard, but also a fine listen front to back.
unexpectedly pop oriented given that their rock sounds are more famous. overall solid, nothing spectacular but enjoyable to listen to in the background
Sweet, nice, simple, etc.
Love the kinks
There are some good songs on this album but much of it sounds very dated 60s folksy to me (also, as noted elsewhere, 60s harmonies are not my jam). That said, I enjoyed the lyrics about ordinary life. I probably won't be listening to this again, but it definitely has good moments. 3/5
Stark trea!
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Yeah, they had some big hits on this one I won’t forget! Favourite song: Track 13 - Waterloo Sunset
jaa ganz nett, aber soo altfattrisch
It's alright. not much to say really
there are some nice tunes on here but the Kinks always sound a little bit fey to me. Maybe its the production levels not giving them the same sort of heft as the Who.
Alright, but no more than that.
Greatest hits band whole album is too much
- Decent oldies vibes - Nice variety of song styles, an enjoyable enough listen - Favorite songs: Harry Rag, Tin Soldier Man
- Solid 60s rock, has some blues elements - Huge Beatles vibes, can’t tell if they’re a rip off or that’s just the sound of the time - Lazy Old Sun stands out as being different, kinda grunge?

BL: The Kinks were synonymous with my childhood. My Dad always used to play “You Really Got Me” in his car and my mum “Lola” and “Waterloo Sunset”. This album of course has the latter. I’ve never listened to a Kinks LP the whole way through so this is going to be an interesting experience to see if my childhood love of this band and my dads constant yammering about how they changed the game was justified. AL: it was pretty good. I can appreciate for the time this would’ve been pretty crazy. The witticisms in the lyrics writing may be the highlight for me. There are some pretty wacky sounds and production choices in the first third of the album which I think play in the albums favour very well. Overall I don’t think I’d rush to listen to the album again - it had some very good points but a lot of it was just ok, and some of it hasn’t aged very well. Sometimes the overt simplicity works (“Two Sisters”) and other times it does not (“Harry Rag”) FT: “David Watts”, “Death of a Clown”, “Waterloo Sunset” 3/5
6/10. Waterloo Sunset is an absolute classic, though.
I have a friend called David Watts. He likes this album. I enjoyed this more than expected, lots of variety and fine songwriting.
