I have a guitarists bias.

Classic for a reason

People who know me know I’m an idiot and one way I know they’re probably right is that up through a good chunk of my 20s I 100% thought Eric Clapton was an acoustic musician because I knew about him from his Unplugged album and listened to it so much. Anyway, this kicks ass!

Wow, it's been a long time since I encountered an album on the list that deserves five stars. It's incredible how Clapton's musicianship allows this album to be so stilystically diverse and at no time boring. "Let It Grow" is an absolute masterpiece that even gave me chills. The vocals are restraint and the music is fine and fitting throughout the record. As a result, it's a great work that is sensitive, interesting, can make you smile and feel better. Definitely deserves a maximum rate of five out of five.

Chill classic. Great riffs

Very smooth and bluesy album. Lots of foot tapping moments, and honestly not a single song I would skip. The cover of "I Shot The Sheriff" was very well done, and the opener of "Motherless Children" did a good job of setting the tone for the rest of this album. Admittedly, Clapton didn't write most of these songs, but he performed them in a way that made them his own. A short and sweet album with absolutely no filler, I highly recommend this one and will be listening to it again. 10/10 Favorite Tracks: Motherless Children, Get Ready, I Shot the Sheriff, Let It Grow, Mainline Florida

damn that was some smooth rocking blues

this one is groovy

i’ve been meaning to listen to an eric clapton album for the longest time but i didn’t know what to listen to, this was amazing, i liked every song and it was overall a very consistent album

Clapton's sweet strings

I still think this is Claptons best solo album.

Mellow blues rock. Really great.

Top 3 Clapton solo albums. 5 star

This was absolutely great

Easy listening, but still quite complex. Really great!

Listening to this awesome album, while reading about the last day of c*mmunism in Albania

5/5. KYS all these other tryhard, virtue signaling reviews.

Easy 5

Eric Clapton sits at the head table, one of the absolute canonized kings of a number of genres ranging from guitar folk, classic rock, contemporary and even jazz. He is, and was when this album came out, both a great storyteller and one of the best guitarists of all time. That combination places him in "music god" territory and it is very likely I would get much resistance in saying that. Just listen to the album.

awesome!

Perfection - an absolute masterpiece

The best

461 Ocean Blvd is one of those magical works of art. Each song is exquisitely performed. Enjoyable from start to finish. Obligatory Clapton is a trash human. Doesn’t change the quality of the album though.

This record deserves a lot of listens. The blues and guitar work is so dialed. The songwriting is fun, and creates a place where you just kind of want to hang out in each song. Eric Clapton really just truly loves the blues and respect that he just made exactly what he wanted to hear.

5 stars

„Wiche 10 albums do you take with you on the lonely Island?“: definitely 461 Ocean Boulevard! Love it since it was released.

I only really started to indulge in Eric's solo career in my early 20s, after spending my entire teens listening to overstimulating bands like Led Zeppelin, with their grueling guitar solos and riffs. Then, listening to albums like 461 Ocean Boulevard, I started to notice things, musically speaking, that I hadn't noticed before. It was like watching pornography your entire life, and then suddenly having sex for the first time. Amazing!

Шикарный бархатный блюз

Klassiker. Clapton in Hochform.

# Album Name: 461 Boulevard # Artist: Clapton # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: An absolute peach of an album. Filled with plenty of great tracks. # Top Tunes: motherless children / hand jive / get read / i shot the sheriff / cant hold out / let it grow / rollin man / mainline florida # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Nice blues album here. If my memory is right, Phil Collins producing and on Drums.

The guitar work is great, and the album has a really nice and bluesy feel to it.

Great Eric Clapton

Great for any mood. Wonderful playing, all around solid. Could use a volume boost on a modern set of speakers.

For personal reasons. 5 stars.

Bravo "Mr. Slowhand"! Perfect album. Masterpiece.

Great Clapton!

Solid album. Better than I thought it would be.

Started off thinking "this is great headphones and listing and chilling" music. Settled in... Then these moments of fluid hypnotic magic came on: - Willie and hand jive - I shot the Sheriff I I can't hold out And by the I realised. This is perfection. Oh Eric. You've done something wonderful here. I knew I liked you but had no idea which album would be the entry point. This does on the 5+ pile.

Great live feel to this album. Fantastic drumming as well

Definitively a must listen to. I dislike Clapton as a person and have met hom more than 5 times. Not a nice dude. Other than that, he is sinply an amazing musician and producer. His arrangements are pretty wild, impressive, original and creative. The flow of the blues guitar flow is unparalleled. All songs have a commonsound that ties them together except one at the end. Masterfull sound and clean guitar licks. Clapton is god.

Loved Motherless Children. What a jam!

Excellent

Pure quality

Classic

Eric Clapton is an artist I am not familiar with at all but I am blown away. This is so so subdued in an extraordinary way. The guitar solos are not bombastic or chauvinistic; they are somber and peaceful. No better example than let it grow. The guitar speaks to us on every song and it has conversations with the organ on Willie and the Hand Jive wow. The influences on some of these songs so reggae. I think this is easy listening in the best way very reminicient of Kind of Blue. Simple and thought out. It relies on the fade out too much I love this.

Very talented musicians.

Brilliance is not an over-statement here. The master at his best. Blues, Rock, Storytelling threaded together, track after track after track. Volume II's live version of Little Wing may be the best rendition of that gem I've ever heard. Second favorite track is Meet Me (Down at the Bottom); it made me listen again with lyrics turned on. No idea what it is about, but damn sure put on my running shoes.

Let it grow sucks but the rest was great!

It doesn’t feel right that I’ve rated 616 albums already, yet I think this is the first time Eric Clapton has been generated. It feels like that must be wrong, but I don’t think it is. Anyway, I really enjoyed this album. Willy and the Hand Jive, and I Shot The Sheriff were pleasantly familiar, with different flavours than I’m used to. As expected, the guitar playing is great throughout. It feels understated and never in your face, but you would absolutely notice the emptiness without it.

You should've seen my face when I saw his name!! I listened to the deluxe version. I liked the live section tracked into the end more than the intended album but still good. I didn't know Let it Grow was from this early in his career.

So nice, listened to it twice...

Fantastic! Good songs and good sound. Still bluesy but not only blues. Soulful in a white way. Slide guitar and a lot of acoustic sounds.

Records like this illuminate why Eric Clapton was such an important and influential figure in western popular music for the last 50+ years.

Good album

Vintage Clapton. A very good listen.

dosta dobro, nekoliko lajkanih

Superb album, wonderful guitar work throughout.

Always enjoyed the Eric Clapton songs that I heard on the radio. This album introduced me to a number of songs that provided new insights into his music.

Love this album.

I did enjoy listening to this album. I grooved along to each track...and really really grooved to some of them!

I was a big fan of Eric Clapton in college. But he and I have not stayed on the same path as the years have passed, and now I have an instinctively negative reaction to him. This album, though, is really exceptional. It reminds me why I ever went to see him in concert. Also realized that Tears In Heaven and such weren’t just late-in-life softening… hearing “Let It Grow” made me realize he had those softer-side tendencies at the beginning too, I just wasn’t all that aware of them. Excellent album.

Textbook Clapton. Very suave without feeling impersonal. This definitely inspired a lot of soulless yacht rock to follow

Great end to end. Hard to admit.

Fav songs -Get ready -I can’t hold out -Please be with me -Let it grow -Give me strength Honourable mention -Steady rolling man -Mainline Florida

Superb!

CLASSIC for MANY GOOD REASONS

One of the very first and most favorite albums I have ever heard. Outstanding all the way around.

Rock de Clapton. Vinilo total.

Clapton almost never disappoints. Great 70's classic rock

Solid Rock n Roll blues guitar. Mothers milk to me baby.

excellent !

Excellent album, very much enjoyed this one.

Funky blues, good cover of shot the sheriff

nice clapton

Not normally an Eric Clapton fan apart from his chart hits, but this really opened my eyes and ears to his music

very good

You can call this album “so Clapton” in delivery, but what does that even mean when you look at the diversity of his sounds. The smooth easy listening and revisioning of these many covers makes for a great album, with a focus more on riffs and the arrangements than on his solos.

On goes the Blues Rock extravaganza! Eric delivers a great album filled with a mix of original songs and covers, but all of them with his own personal touch and twists. Love the guitar work, as always, and also really liked the laid back, chill vibe!

4,5/5 Ist halt clapton Er hatte schon bessere Sachen (auch schon davor mit anderen Bands)

Surprised I haven't listened to this all the way thru before

Album tres classique et personnel pour moi. Un 5 et une reecoute garantit.

amazing album fuck Eric Clapton, he’s a piece of shit but a he’s still a talented piece of shit 9/10

Great songwriting magnified by understated performance. I'm not saying that his playing, singing, etc., isn't in top form. But there's nothing about this album that feels forced. This is Clapton being Clapton.

I might prefer Slowhand but am not sure - both are classic EC albums.

Excellent album. Laidback, groovy, nice flow of the songs. Love this version of 'I shot the Sheriff'.

omg love

Guitar doesn’t get much better than this

Super album, already in my collection. "I Shot The Sheriff" "Motherless Children" "Willie and The Hand Jive" and "Let It Grow" particular favourites. Eric at his post heroin recovery stage, even though he has some dodgy beliefs I still respect him for his talent.

So good. Concrete 4 " I Shot The Sheriff" will always be a classic. Bob Marley writes great songs. I hadn't heard "Please Be With Me" and wow. That's a ballad that's at least on level with "Wonderful Tonight" damn. What a chill record. "Let It Grow" is a hidden banger wow. Ok it's a five.

Awesome blues/rock album

Will always love Clapton - just need to separate the artist from the art sometimes

I actually enjoyed this a lot, more than I was expecting. My favourite songs were Motherless Children and Willie and The Hand Jive. 5/5 stars.

Rock de Clapton. Vinilo total.

1st time dengar eric clapton klasik. wow!

Yeah this is short and sweet...almost too short

Hidden gem of an album, great pacing and changes in style

Fast and lively songs with an amazing electric guitar. A positive and good mood is guaranteed.

Loved this, right up my street.

First song great tune...lost track of time and didnt finish the album

Y no encontre nada.

Iba para 4 pero el comentario de Don Ayale me hizo escuchar el disco de nuevo y ciertamente no hay razón para no ponerle 5.

Good shit.

Surprisingly good

Good and jammy

Look I'm in a good mood today so I'll rate the music and not the piece of shit who wrote it.

I love the 1001 Albums Generator (albeit few of its albums, but that really isn't the creator's fault). What I really don't like about it is how zeitgeisty its rating system is (by necessity). Apart from the odd Kanye album, this album here really is the perfect example - 3.1 isn't a catastrophic rating, but this album would have a much higher rating if it had a different performer. Sure, let's voice your displeasure about some idiotic thing Clapton said in 2021 by review bombing this 1974 album. You sure showed him, bud, I'm positive the pandemic will stop out of sheer gratitude any day now. It's a good album, shame that it will forever remain in the vast sea of 3.1x on this website because people - especially the morons with the top-rated reviews - used it the most in 2021.

One of the best guitarists of all time. I liked his cover of I Shot The Sherrif

so far behind. Will catch up this week. First of all, i think BOSTON has been the most detached I've been from the group. A bit stunned! I will give it another chance, but I'm starting to wonder if I had some traumatic event in those car rides to the Cape... As for Eric. I was pleasantly surprised by the full listen here. Just like everything Clapton does, it's very tight. We've listened to so many rock albums and a lot of blues rock and 90%, while nice, are often interchangeable. This I think stands above a lot of the others. Frank said the key is being 1/16th better and I think it's a little more than that. Clapton idolized BB King, and I think they're pretty similar. Not going to shred your face off, but pretty thoughtful and methodical in their playing. Frank may be right that he's not the most original artist, possibly one of the more lopsided originality to praise rockers out there. He and THE KING, but Elvis had a shit load of charisma. He also stole Georges girl and wrote a lot of songs about it. Doesn't get enough shit for that. In the end, landed on 4. I'm a Clapton simp.

There have always been a couple of things in the way of me an Clapton - one is guys who I played with growing up calling him over rated. That feels a bit exaggerated if you take a step back and think about how much he’s created across decades of music. The second thing in the way of me loving his music is the whole Keep Britain White thing. I’ve gone down the rabbit hole a few times and never seems to be a good answer or even a sincere apology. Even tougher when so much of his music is borrowing from black musicians. Now to the music - I still like Clapton’s music and lot of this album. The whole reggae and Shot the Sheriff thing has always been weird. But the rest of the album kind of rips. Steady Rollin Man, Can’t Hold Out, Give Me Strength. Motherless Children might win for happiest song with saddest lyrics. Brutal, can you imagine trying to rock out to that at a Clapton show?

Great album!

Again i feel like a white male 60+ but i just like this music.

Very solid. Maybe the most I’ve enjoyed Clapton.

One of the great guitars and voices. These albums is why I do this list. An all time great that I don't think I would've found the time for unless presented to me

It must suck to not be able to separate musicians from their political stances and just enjoy a record. Drowsy blues rock thats easy to listen to.

Listened to the deluxe version and live Clapton was able to stretch out his playing

Well this has some tasty stuff in it but maybe not the masterpiece some people think it to be. I've enjoyed it though and might listen again.

This album, with the exception of the dirge-like ‘Hand Jive’, is really fantastic. Eric Clapton is a piece of shit, so there’s no way he gets 5 stars.

Great guitar work.

Please Be With Me was a favorite.

Day842 - not many weak songs on this one. eric clapton deserves all the hate he gets but you can’t deny the music is really good

The album is nice, I like the blues rock feeling in every song. However, none of them surprised me or made me think they were special. 3,5/5.

Very blues inspired, added to the collection. Not heard Eric Clapton like this before

Love this album cover. The music itself is solid. I’m not a big Clapton guy so wasn’t sure what to expect but it’s a good mix of styles and of course excellent guitar playing. Please Be With Me was my fave.

Very good mid-70s rock but falls short of being great. Plus, he turned into a giant asshole sadly. Not quite a 4 but I’ll round up.

4.6 out of 5

Pretty solid album with some cool blues rock tunes. Unlike some others I don’t rate the albums on what people do, but on the quality of their music albums. Best song: Motherless Children

Bluesy rock

Solid, chill blues all the way through. Great to put on at a midday beach cookout as a divorced dad with your best mate Old Milwaukee and that guy you met at the dry cleaners. Shit, what was his name again? Brandon? Braden? He's mostly all right except for when he gets liquored up and talks about the immigration problem again. Oh shit, he's anti-vax too? Yikes. Anyway, good album. Top tracks: "Let it Grow," "I Shot the Sheriff," "Motherless Children," "Mainline Florida"

Clapton is a great guitarist and writer so I enjoyed this

Eric Clapton always delivers. This album’s sound is so clean. I enjoy his bluesy style. I would definitely listen to this again. Need to find on vinyl.

Heard this many times. Great album.

Honestly, a great album. It's nothing super special, but I like it. I definitely like Clapton’s work with Cream better, but I have no complaints about this one.

they call him the greatest guitarist of all time for good reason

I think this album is fine. It has a truly great, classic song with "I Shot the Sheriff." Other than that, it's mostly just fine blues rock from the era. I would give it a 3.5, and it's the type of album that makes me wish I could do half stars here, because I feel 3 stars downplays the talent and ability Clapton had that is, by itself, better than average, but 4 stars feels like I'm lifting this album up too much.

Strong start, nice album art.

4.5!! Amazing stuff

I thought it was pretty good. I really enjoyed that Motherless Children song. Was surprised at all of the Clapton hate on this site until I did a bit more research and yeah he does seem a dickhead. Rating on the art not the artist.

Really enjoyed this, though I was surprised there were a few cover songs.

Could do without the I Shot The Sheriff cover and it goes without saying that Clapton is a POS but this slaps ngl

Wish Eric could live here again, physically and mentally.

Y’know, I kinda dug the tunes but dammit Clapton is a jerkass.

Rilassato, a tratti dolce

very nice

What can I say? One of the greatest guitarists to do it. Not his best but…

Don't care for Clapton much as a person but he makes some good music

Eric Clapton is timeless

Liked it. Enjoyed the different sounds on the album.

Surprised by the variety of styles, there are a few too many lame tracks for five stars.

That was a good Bob Marley cover, turns out the cover is what got it famous, other than that, it was good. Easy listenings.

Heard this a lot when I was a kid as he was one of my dad’s favorites. May be a little biased for that reason because it is very comforting. He is a great guitar player and songwriter too so hopefully others enjoy this too

61 Ocean Boulevard is the second solo studio album by English musician Eric Clapton. It was released in late July 1974 by RSO Records. 61 Ocean Boulevard is one of Clapton's most successful commercial releases, reaching the Top 10 in eight countries, and peaking at number one in three territories including Canada and the United States. The album reached the Top 5 in the United Kingdom, peaking at number three. In the Netherlands and Norway, the 1974 studio release reached number four on the national album charts. In Germany and New Zealand, the album reached eleven and thirty-eight respectively. In the United States, the release was certified with a Gold Disc for shipment figures of more than 500,000 copies.

Slow hand is awesome!!

Eerikil ihan lepi meininki ja kivaa soittelua, musa ei ehkä osu omaan hermoon mutta ollaan anteliaita!

Enpä ollut tätäkään ennen kuunnellut, paitsi tietysti I Shot The Sherifin.

This was relaxing to listen to. It made me think of music you’d hear in a Beachside Cafe. I did hear from other reviews that it was a bunch of covers of songs by other artists. Favorite song: Please Be With Me Rating: 3.5/5

dammit fuck this guy but this is so good. i realize he's white-washing all the blues that came before him, then denying them any credit, but it's so good.

This was great. Much more subdued in terms of volume and energy than I'm used to from Clapton, but I really enjoyed it. A lot of the songs had classic blues progressions, which was a little repetitive, but not overly so. I listened to it twice and was satisfied. Four stars.

One of the best Clapton albums.

I think this may be my favorite Clapton project outside of Layla and maybe Disraeli Gears. The I Shot The Sheriff cover is an excellent and faithful rendition. It’s the highlight, but it’s a good album from beginning to end and sounds great today.

I was already familiar with this album. It's a good album, showing a big change from his prior material. This album has a consistent relaxed feel which I appreciate. I Shot The Sheriff is one of his bigger songs, and Let It Grow is strong too. I have listened to this from time to time for years, and I will continue to do so.

Eric Clapton probably isn’t anyone’s favourite human being, but as a guitarist, he’s rightly considered one of the greats. 461 Ocean Boulevard is chock full of great grooves rather than showy soloing and is all the better for it. It makes the album far more approachable and likeable. It also includes some of his best tunes. Opener “Motherless Child” has always been a favourite and starts the set at a gallop. Things soon slow down and the singles, Johnnie Otis’ “Willie And The Hand Jive” and Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff” are both great versions, and different enough to the originals. 461 Ocean Boulevard’s mix of influences – blues, reggae and mellow California rock – sit well together, and Clapton’s playing, though confident, is never overbearing. The support players serve him well and the production is clean and warm. It’s easy to like. 8/10

One of the good ones!

Highlights are I Shot the Sherif, Let It Grow, Motherless Children and Willie and the Hand Jive.

Really enjoyed this.

Fuck ol clapper! But this album bangs.

fun blues rock album, pianos on steady rollin' man was great

Eric Clapton is one of my favorites, so I'm happy to see this album on here. I prefer his more rockin' albums, but this one is good too.

I’ve always liked Eric Clapton but never dove deep into his solo music. I think all the songs I know are from Cream or Derek and the Dominos. 4.5

❤️

It's fine

Mega chillig, neues Album zum Schlafen. Erstes mal, dass ich Eric Clapton höre

I found this to be really nice easy listening but I didn’t really find any standout hits.

Bien chouette

Some absolute sublime tracks.

Nice sound

So solid!

Hard to come up with a fair review for an album that ran on an 8-track loop in my Fiat until it became an earwig and I banned it. But the fact that I wore it out indicates it's pretty good.

Amazing album! Great fusion of country, jazz, and of course rock n roll!

Although we heard from Cream and Derek & the Dominoes, this is the first entry so far from Eric Clapton. This album features mostly covers, including ones from blues legend Robert Johnson, Johnny Otis, Willie Dixon, and Bob Marley. Yvonne Elliman, a successful singer in her own right, provided backing vocals on several tracks. The album moves along at a good pace, and is just good enough to get four stars.

Letkeetä. Let it grov, ssa huikee kierto

This motherfucker has the balls to cover Bob Marley?!? But seriously, folks...love watching Clapton play... obviously one of the greatest ever...but, with the exception of Layla, I've never really loved his songs all that much. Nonetheless, this is solid stuff. So 4.

Clapton

I enjoyed the energy and the funky blues sounds. I Shot the Sheriff is a classic and the whole album has a similar vibe. I also liked the collab tracks with other vocalists.

Clapton at his best

Nice EC album. Moslty solo - great guitar work as always. Enjoyed

Lots of bangers on this.

Classic Clapton. Need to listen to this one a few more times.

Nice to hear some Clapton considering I slept through it at the show. I shot the sheriff was never my favorite cover, but this first track really struck a chord lol. Not in a crying way, just like a hell yeah

Really good Clapton Album. 4 *.

This seems like an album he put out for fun so he could cover songs he liked. Unpopular opinion: I didn’t miss the bitchin’ guitar solos he’s so known for and still wholly appreciated the simplicity of the songs.

Solid album with some good guitar play from one of the best. Vocals were good though he has better.

How can you not like or respect him

This was pretty much guaranteed a 4 just because of Clapton's skills. It did not exceed expectations. The guitar playing is par excellence but the songwriting is not his best. Not the greatest album he's been a part of but still quite solid. Very pleasant listening.

not really sure why this one is on the list. he's got several much better albums. it's an enjoyable listen, but by no means his best.

Eric Clapton may be a racist and an asshole. Nevertheless, this album is good. I enjoyed it, even though I won't listen to it anymore because of Eric's attitudes. There are plenty of other great musicians whose attitudes are more in line with my own. 4/5

**In-Depth Review of *461 Ocean Boulevard* by Eric Clapton** Released in July 1974, *461 Ocean Boulevard* marks a pivotal moment in Eric Clapton’s career. Coming after a three-year hiatus and his recovery from heroin addiction, the album represents a conscious shift away from the guitar-god persona of his Cream and Derek and the Dominos days toward a more introspective, rootsy sound. It became one of his most commercially successful solo records, largely due to the hit cover of Bob Marley’s *“I Shot the Sheriff.”* --- ### 🎸 **Music and Production** Musically, the album is a laid-back blend of blues, rock, reggae, and country influences. Clapton’s guitar work is more restrained than in his earlier years, favoring feel and subtlety over technical flash. This is not a weakness—it reflects a mature artist embracing space and tone over speed and volume. The production, handled by Tom Dowd, is clean and warm, with a strong emphasis on groove and atmosphere. The rhythm section, featuring Carl Radle (bass) and Jamie Oldaker (drums), introduces the “Tulsa sound” to Clapton’s palette—laid-back, tight, and soulful. The album has a cohesive sonic identity, with a mellow, almost sun-drenched vibe that makes it feel like a personal, intimate listen even decades later . --- ### 📝 **Lyrics and Themes** Lyrically, *461 Ocean Boulevard* is a mixed bag. Most of the tracks are covers or reinterpretations of older blues and R&B songs, so the thematic consistency comes more from tone than narrative. Clapton’s original contributions—*Give Me Strength*, *Let It Grow*, and *Get Ready*—touch on themes of redemption, longing, and spiritual renewal, which resonate with his personal recovery journey. *“Let It Grow”* stands out as a lush, emotional centerpiece. It’s a spiritual sequel to *“Let It Rain”* and features layered guitars and harmonies that underscore Clapton’s yearning for love and clarity . --- ### 🎶 **Key Tracks** - **Motherless Children** – A blues standard reworked with a driving groove and slide guitar. It sets the tone for the album’s blues roots. - **I Shot the Sheriff** – A reggae-infused cover that became a massive hit. While some critics accuse it of “whitewashing” reggae, others see it as a respectful and commercially successful interpretation . - **Let It Grow** – A standout original with soaring melodies and emotional depth. - **Please Be With Me** – A gentle, country-tinged ballad that showcases Clapton’s softer side. - **Mainline Florida** – A blues-rock closer with a strong guitar solo and a slightly harder edge. --- ### ✅ **Pros** - **Mature musicianship**: Clapton plays with restraint and taste, proving that less can be more. - **Cohesive sound**: The album flows well, with a consistent mood and production style. - **Strong vocal performances**: Clapton’s voice, often underrated, is soulful and suits the material well. - **Great production**: Tom Dowd’s work gives the album a warm, analog richness that still sounds great today . - **Emotional resonance**: Especially in Clapton’s originals, there’s a sense of personal rebirth and reflection. --- ### ❌ **Cons** - **Lack of original material**: Only three songs are written or co-written by Clapton, which may disappoint fans looking for more personal songwriting. - **Middle-of-the-road feel**: Some tracks, especially in the middle of the album, can feel too mellow or similar in tone, leading to accusations of blandness . - **Controversial cover choices**: *“I Shot the Sheriff”* divides opinion—some see it as a classic, others as a diluted version of Marley’s original. - **Clapton’s public persona**: For many modern listeners, Clapton’s controversial statements and behavior in recent years overshadow the music, making it harder to enjoy his work in a vacuum . --- ### 🌍 **Influence and Legacy** Despite its mellow tone, *461 Ocean Boulevard* had a significant impact. It helped introduce reggae to a broader rock audience and set the template for Clapton’s future solo work—rootsy, relaxed, and emotionally grounded. It also marked a successful comeback, proving that Clapton could evolve beyond his 1960s guitar hero image. While it may not reach the creative heights of *Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs*, it remains a fan favorite and a critical milestone in Clapton’s solo career. For many, it’s the definitive “mature” Clapton album—less flash, more soul. --- ### 🏁 **Final Verdict** **461 Ocean Boulevard** is a quietly powerful album that captures a man rebuilding his life and sound. It’s not flashy, but it’s deeply human. Whether you’re drawn to its bluesy grooves, spiritual undercurrents, or just the warm sound of Clapton’s guitar, it’s an album that rewards repeated listens. A mellow masterpiece with a few flaws, but undeniable heart.

Ok ish Clapton, quite laid back, you can to start to feel the JJ Cale influences.

I enjoyed this album more than I thought. Eric Clapton is pretty cool. I like “I Shot The Sheriff” the most.

I’m not intended to say anything mean but can you just stop whining then it would be much better

Great chill album, easy to listen to, nothing earth shattering but high quality work.

I don't care for the politics, I'm here for the music. It's a great album, Eric doesn't fall short of an incredible musician. He's played with some of the best from the blues genre. A enjoyed it enough.

70s blues rock. Some fantastic songs.

Felt like I was listening to the songs waiting for the link between them and trying to carve out some relation or theme between the tracks (of which I eventually found none). The songs seemed to be scattered memories/stories but somehow this didn't bother me as the instruments without the lyrics were fun on every single song. The first song was pretty unique and it would liked to have revisited that theme later in the album to gain some context for the first song. Ended on a high with the energy of the last few songs which excused the confusion of the first half. The name of the album paired with the seemingly random stories felt like something which came from the mind of an older man sitting on a rocking chair on his front porch commentating on his own life whilst watching the world and drawing parallels from watching his neighbours go by. Favourite song overall: Please Be With Me Favourite fun song: Steady Rolling Man Favourite moment: A pause and then totally unexpected, unlinked and unnecessary symbols and drums at the end of Motherless Children Overall: 4/5. Would have given it a 3 but second half changed my mind.

Very bewildering album that ultimately has too many great guitar moments for me to chastise the lyrics too much. Opening up with Motherless Children and Give Me Strength, to then have what broadly seems like fun upbeat songs (admittedly I haven't been able to really deep dive into the lyrics or mythology of the album yet) seems honestly wild. However, there are great moments of fun here, even if I don't really parse what I'm jamming to. Ended up liking all of the songs apart from Motherless Children (which still had some fun guitar bits) and Willie And The Hand Jive (what the hell was that lmao). Seemed to have some interesting influences and vibes I wasn't expecting from what else I know of Clapton (which admittedly is just basically Layla, While My Guitar Gently Weeps live performance, and Tears from Heaven, and Sunshine of Your Love with Cream, right? I have huge gaps here I know). Really liked the random horny turn in the middle, then sweet with Let It Grow. I think albums around this era just chucked together a load of songs and didn't really care about the sequencing or narrative unless it's a concept album, which kinda frustrates me but I can understand it as more of a collection of songs and moments than as a cohesive album art piece. Anyway seems like Eric really was going through some pretty wild mood changes and thoughts but he really can play the guitar!

Eric Clapton may be a terrible person at this point, but this album, taken in isolation, is pretty damn phenomenal.

Great album. Even if he’s a total asshole in real life

Prima muziek. Wat gedateerd.

Great blues rock

Not really an Eric Clapton fan but this is a pretty groovy album. I like it but probably wouldn't listen to it otherwise. I have a new appreciation for Clapton after this. Catchy chill tunes.

Nice blues album.

Surprisingly (to me) good! The unexpected cover song threw me and I had to double-check that it wasn't the original.

Pretty nice. Low 4/5.

Don't remember anything about it but it was a good listen

I had mentally pinned this album as a 60s album, not a 70s album. Either way, I really enjoyed it and I’m trying my best not to be swayed by the top reviews haha.

Erg lekker album, zoals ik dat ook wel had verwacht van Clapton. 4 reten.

Dont really enjoy Eric Clapton but this was a really enjoyable album.

Very easy listening.. I Shot the Sheriff is such an incredible song

Solid album

81% Best: Willie And The Hand Jive; Get Ready; I Shot The Sheriff; Steady Rollin' Man Must-Hear? Hate to admit, but sure

Great album. I'm not sure I'll ever understand the hype for Claptons skill, but a very enjoyable 40 minutes.

quite pretty

Very good! I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Totally chill and enjoyable throughout. Nothing bad to say. If I wanna listen to something while driving, this is a great album.

I don't think I've ever listened to a Clapton solo album. Mans is crazy talented. The guitar playing is funky and complicated, but never feels difficult, if that makes sense. "I Shot the Sherrif" is an iconic song, but I don't think it's actually all that great in the context in this album. You can kind of pick up a bit that Eric's talent is mostly instrumental and not vocal. He hides that talent disparity pretty well, though. His guitar work and backup singers more than make up for whatever greatness is missing from his voice. Also, let me be clear, he's a very solid singer. There's nothing wrong with his singing. I think the worst thing I can say about his singing is that he's got a bit of a limited range, but even then, I don't feel like he's pushing that range at all. Man, this is a really great blues album. I honestly was surprised and disappointed when the album ended. It felt like there was still some life at the end, and that it could go on for another 10 minutes or so before it really needed to wrap itself up. But it was still a really enjoyable listen. Favorite Song(s): Give Me Strength, Please Be With Me

wow that guitar playing went hard, hooooly. Super upper chill by the beach town vibes.

Always love me some Clapton!

Very solid, highly listenable.

I definitely enjoyed listening to this despite me not realizing that 40 minutes had gone by.

This album was the perfect thing to throw on while cooking breakfast

Отличная музыка, слушается на ура! 7 из 10.

Loved it.

Probably my bad but I listened to Pet Sounds right after.

Liked quite a few tracks , the album held up great to replays. I had heard of Clapton before this and was looking forward and this didn’t disappoint

I still maintain the somewhat controversial position that Clapton is good but overrated. However, this is an undeniably cool album!

Toes the line between great blues and popular.

I'm coming around to some other folks' way of thinking about Clapton. He's very good, but overrated. Couple standouts and the rest of the album is solid, but not a lot of hidden gems of his I've encountered with this project. I like his Cream era work the best, which speaks to the talent of his bandmates, more than any other factor. The line "Love is lovely" from Let it Grow always struck me as just comical. Really? THAT'S the best line you could come up with? Nobody told him, "Oi! Eric! That's a bad lyric, mate."?

Classic blues.

I’m not necessarily the biggest Eric Clapton fan, but this was a decent album for what it is. It leans into a mellow, soft blues rock sound with a laid back and soulful vibe. Definitely one of those records that’s nice to have on in the background while you unwind. Nothing particularly special or standout for me, and honestly, I probably won’t come back to it, but for a one time listen, it was solid.

> the Beatles Scandal noted

Despite Eric being a certified Douche, this is good stuff.

Good album for a road trip.

I've had a few entries with Clapton playing, but this is my first album by him as a solo artist. And I'll be honest: he's pretty good. Not spectacular – especially on this record where he seems oddly restrained given his legendary status as a musician – but pretty good. Clapton's singing is generally good, at least until you reach the extremely discomforting Willie And The Hand Jive and think he's murmuring creepily about handjobs. (I wouldn't put it past him.) But in general, he's found a nice balance between soul, blues, and rock, showing mainly restraint as opposed to energy. Another reviewer put it best: "As a vocalist, Eric Clapton is very good, superlatively aware of his limitations. Soulful, with simple stylings." I do try to separate the art from the artist, and it seems like most reviewers cannot do that. Musically, this is easily at least a 3-star record, despite how gross and despicable of a human being Eric Clapton is. The backing instrumentalists are fantastic, especially the bass and backing vocals. The production is strong. The mood of the album is warm, uplifting, and groovy. There are no obvious throwaway tracks, despite the majority of them being covers. Let It Grow is significantly better than the version from The Lorax. And his cover of I Shot The Sheriff slaps. I don't care what anyone else here says. There plenty of valid reasons that prevent 461 Ocean Boulevard from being a 5-star entry, but Clapton being a dick isn't one of them (unless his music is affected, which it isn't). 4/5 Key tracks: Motherless Children, I Shot The Sheriff, Let It Grow

It’s almost a four, but more like a 3.5. I’ll give it a four though.

Lazy blues album, with some major hits.

Motherless Children - 5/5 Give Me Strength - 4/5 Willie And The Hand Jive - 3/5 Get Ready - 4/5 I Shot The Sheriff - 5/5 I Can't Hold Out - 3/5 Please Be With Me - 4/5 Let It Grow - 4/5 Steady Rollin' Man - 3/5 Mainline Florida - 4/5 Average score: 3.9/5 (rounding up)

Not bad at all, and I like the sound of the dobro.

Ok this is what people are talking about when they shout out Clapton as a top ten guitarist

Favorites: I Shot the Sheriff, Please Be With Me

This is alright, pretty nice groove to some songs and good guitar playing which suits the vibe of the songs without being too over the top. The ballads are pleasant if a little laid back to be very memorable. I don't normally rate albums which are mostly covers but this is not bad

Verder kennen we natuurlijk I Shot the Sheriff en (wellicht in mindere mate) Let it Grow. Ik zet dit soort muziek met heel veel plezier op tijdens het werk. Een 5 is misschien teveel gevraagd, maar een hele dikke 4 geef ik er makkelijk aan.

I think this is Clapton's one stab at greatness as a solo artist. I think the album has a cool vibe and there's plenty to like here. Highlights for me are "Let it Grow", "Give Me Strength", and "Motherless Children". The "Willie & The Hand Jive" and "I Shot The Sheriff" covers are also pretty enjoyable. 4.5 stars.

Cool, classy sophomore turn from solo Clapton. A lot of laidback stuff but also some seriously blazing cool gems such as the zip zippying Motherless Children, Let It Grow with Mary Magdalene and I Shot The Sheriff which shot up to number one in the US and is the best version of the song.

Solid Record. Good background working music. Liked a bunch of the songs. Will probably listen again.

8/10…rock / blues rock

basics rock stuff. Good

Could be a 5 tbh

Beautiful, laid back, bluesy and funky all together. In some aspects I understand that this is the record that made Clapton a solo artist. I surly get why. I mean, even the cover for I shut the sheriff, which I prefer by much the original, sounds great in the context of this record. It starts great with the blues on 1, great acoustic slide on 2, wonderful vocals and backing on 4 , and than the groovy Marley cover. The best is saved for the End- really gorgeous ballads on 7 and 8, 8 especially on of Claptons best tracks. 9 and especially 10 are groovy highlights aswell. Just a fun listen overall. Guitars and vocals from Eric are great from start to finish, and the collection of song is strong though the entire thing. Nothing groundbreaking, but absolutely delightful. A solid 4.

Good casual listening. Found some keepers. I really liked Maintine Florida and (of course) I Shot the Sheriff

Great set of tracks. The Bob Marley version of I Shot The Sheriff is still the only one I need to hear though.

Let it Grow is one of my favorite songs. I Shot the Sheriff is okay, but the original is better. The rest is passable Clapton.

I think Clapton is a tool, but I can't deny that this is a really good album and has some absolute bangers on it.

This is a really great album. Funky and bluesy. Please Be With Me is beautifully tender

Clapton’s a dumb old git but he really did have it back in the day

He’s a legend, and some of these songs are fantastic. Some are more boring and bland than I expected though.

Such a cool album, bit of a genre bender with everything going on. I’m a bit surprised to see a bit of a softer album from Clapton. Really feels like he’s just a good back up band away from really making a masterpiece though. The back tracking felt a bit muddled and disparate at times. I wonder if he’ll ever try to do that….

Enjoyable Clapton

Would never think to put on Eric Clapton but I loved it…perfect mix of rock and blues.

Ye solid 70s rock, not much else to say

Although they’re mostly covers, Eric really provides a good feel with all of these songs, just wished they were originals and it would be a 5 star. Maybe he should do heroin more often

A lot of short jams outside of the cover songs..

Bangerrrr

An album that checks all the Clapton baskets. Excellent musician but a bit messy as a human being of late. Nobody’s perfect but the music is darn close.

3.9/5 Discovered a tune … let it grow. Motherless children great album kick off.

Now this is a Clapton record I can get behind. We can talk about him being a racist moron and cultural appropriation all we want, but on 461 Ocean Boulevard he (finally!) strikes a balance between showcasing his guitar playing and letting the songs breathe. It has its' ups and downs, with highlights in 'Let It Grow' and the groovy cover of 'I Shot The Sheriff' (just forget about the original social commentary and go with the flow).

Easily one of Clapton’s greatest solo efforts. 461 Ocean Boulevard showcases his skills on the six string while never making him seem flashy - he just goes with the arrangements and binds everything together like hot glue.

Well, this has got me. I freely admit to having a certain bias against Mr C. Who was Peter Green's (the greatest blues guitarist this country will ever produce) predecessor in John Meyall's Blues Breakers. I'll admit I do have his greatest hits album, and like it. Also Let It Grow is one of my favourites on that album, so it's presence here is a good sign. And with the exception of Hand Jive, which was waaaay tttoooooo ssslllooowww, the rest of the album didn't disappoint. I will definitely consider purchasing more of Mr C's works in the future. Now then, does it warrant a 4, yes I rather think it does, but only just, and I mean only just.

Never got the hype, with all the "Clapton is God" BS ...this was really good. Enjoyed the different vibes.

Good album of covers. There's a lot of arseholes in the music industry, people need to separate the person from the music. Or at the very least be consistent with their judgement.

Good album

Easy listening, listened a few times in a row

1/2/25. Always appreciated Clapton's music, was familiar with a couple tracks from this one. Excellent guitar work.
