Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Putting aside that Eric Clapton is a terrible person, I generally prefer the projects he's involved with (Cream, Derek & The Dominos) rather than him on his own. This is a good album, but it's not great. The best songs are "Motherless Children," "I Shot The Sheriff," and "Let It Grow." Those songs are fantastic. The rest are good, and obviously Clapton is a great guitar player, but the album overall lacks something that puts it truly over the top.

I've always found Clapton to be a bit of a plonker but this album is pretty great

Despite some general mediocrity from the songs, Clapton's skills on the guitar make this such a joy to listen to. Favorites were I Shot the Sheriff, Let It Grow, and Steady Rollin' Man

I dont think its the best music Clapton’s ever made. But it was classic blues & thoroughly enjoyable (to a blues fan)

Chill bluesy rock music. 3.5 rounded up. Stand-out: I Shot the Sheriff

That salt water view Clapton had recording this album must have worked because after the inital barn burner of "Motherless Children" Eric cools it right down. This album is full of low to mid tempo cuts that kind of slap like Get Ready. In fact this album has deep cuts that really stand out in their lower tempos and attention to groove, such as I Can't Hold Out on Side 2. Please Be With Me has a "Mac on Twang" quality that works really well as a soft-radio gem standing next to the hippie community-garden that is "Let It Grow". "Steady Rolling Man" has some nice laid back blues-funk to it as well. Ultimately, while we all heard enough of "I Shot the Sheriff", this album works best in it's mid-tempo groove based mindspace Clapton was at, so can we blame him for a 1-off reggae song? I say no, while it's overplayed, it's still a solid cover that landed when it came out for a reason. Call him a popularizer of reggae for white audiences if you want but if it got Marley a broader audience, who cares. Let's watch the tide come in and appreciate some of the undervalued tracks on this collection.

also November 26, 2024 The generator has been holding out on Clapton (I think last time was Derek and the Dominos over 2 years ago) As complicated as the larger historical/cultural context behind "I Shot the Sheriff", or Clapton's career in general, is, I think it's a strong cover. Or maybe I just like a good organ part. HL: "Motherless Children", "Give Me Strength", "I Shot the Sheriff", "Please Be With Me", "Let it Grow"

1001 Albums #6 this is quite pleasant, had it on for the day while doing chemistry wouldn't go back to it often but will revisit 80ish/100

I was surprised by this one. I did not think I would like as many songs on this album. But I had a great flow and grooved well.

Despite not being my kind of music, i actually enjoued it quite a bit

With Eric Clapton I am use to the idea that any given album there are going to be a few really good songs, and the rest will be mostly boring. But with this album it's good end to end. Well worth a spin, this is slow hands working OT.

Classic early Clapton. Love it.

Decent album.

Ah, come on man. I had to listen to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers last week, and now I'm starting off this week with a Clapton solo effort? At least I think this will be my last album that has Clapton on it. I'll be forthcoming and admit that I can't stand Clapton the person, but like Bluesbreakers last week, I'll do my best to give the king of dad-rock xenophobes a fair shake on this album. Uggggggghhhhhh, I enjoyed this album, and I absolutely hate that I enjoyed it. I expected to at least enjoy the guitar playing, which I did, but it didn't steal the spotlight from the musical arrangements as a whole. I really enjoyed the organ playing throughout the album, and I liked that a lot of the album was slower and had a more tender feel to it. This album doesn't really showcase Clapton's ability to pluck away on the guitar, but it does show his talents at arranging music, and his ability to perform songs in a thoughtful way. Yvonne Elliman's co-lead vocals on "Get Ready" and her backing vocals elsewhere on the album were really great too. "Let It Grow" was easily the best original contribution from Clapton, but "Get Ready" was no slouch either. As far as the covers go, I think I'd have to pick "Mainline Florida" as my favorite. I can't stand the singing on "I Shot The Sheriff," but I do like the organ playing, and while I liked the arrangements on "Motherless Children," I think the upbeat tone is wildly inappropriate for a song of such heavy themes that was based on a lived experience by the original songwriter. That was certainly a choice. Still, this was a good album, and it felt like it had a lot more originality and feeling in it than the other Clapton involved blues albums I've reviewed.

it was fine

I’m surprised I enjoyed this album

Really solid Clapton album.

This is a baseline good album that is really elevated by I Shot the Sheriff, and to a lesser extent Let It Grow

I Shot The Sheriff is a great cover. Some other great songs on this album too, especially Steady Rollin’ Man 4/5

Couple of great classics on here, but ultimately not something I’ll end up listening to the whole thing again

yeah okay eric clapton!

I can see why people like Clapton. Dude was popping off in the 70's.

I like Eric Clapton the musician (the person can GTFO.) And I like this album. Some straight up blues tracks, a few crossover ones, and the reggae cover, I like most of it quite a bit.

Många jag lyssnat på här!! orkar inte skriva långt för jag vill se nästa album asap

Easy listening

Love the opening track and I Shot The Sheriff, and other tracks as well. Clapton plays some great slide guitar on several songs. He was and is a master of six strings.

Not really my thing, but I can totally understand why it's considered great. Chill, soulful and unique sound.

Ok, le gars c’t’un raciste doublé d’un antivaxx, mais tabouère que c’t’un bon musicien qui a fait de la bonne zique

Blues rock. Contains Eric Clapton's versions of "Motherless Children" (traditional), "Willie and the Hand Jive" (Johnny Otis), "I Shot the Sheriff" (Bob Marley), "I Can't Hold Out" (Willie Dixon), and others, plus some new songs such as "Give Me Strength" and "Let It Grow".

Will and the hand jive Album brings back fun memories

Good album. 4.5 stars for me

This was a pleasant listen on a late Monday morning. Guitar rocked on this one just solid jams.

Nice guitarwork on this album. It gets kinda samey after a while though. His ballads here arent that good imo. Motherless Children, I Shot the Sheriff and Let it Grow stand out the most.

Album 414 of 1001 Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Boulevard Rating : 4 / 5 Not a huge Clapton fan and never bought into that "greatest guitarist ever" title that some award him, but it is a really good album.

Love this album. One of my favs on vinyl the last few years for evening listening. Probably 4.5

Enjoyed this one! Will listen again. Certainly don’t love the man or what he stands for… but a few of his songs still kinda slap

Overall decent. But it has something that exceeds above other artists. Clapton's knack to make a hit. 2 hits in this album's case.

Clapton is just a classic. Bad person, but a good album!

Really strong album. My favorite was Let It Grow.

Okay this was a pretty solid album. I liked his voice and the instrumentals were simple but quite enjoyable. The lyrics could be a bit funny, but often took a storytelling vibe. Honestly a 4 for the new style and overall enjoyableness

Any album with Clapton is probably a classic. I've only heard a couple. Except for the big one everyone's heard, the others seem nice. His twangy playing wakes some teen memories from slumber.

I bought this on vinyl in the early 90's. I was always disappointed with it. I liked his Mayall and Cream stuff, but this was a let down. It's a decent album, but if you remove I Shot the Sheriff, there's no way this album is on this list.

Classic for a reason!

Solid relaxing album. Surprisingly, the only song I recognized "I shot the sheriff" felt the most out of place. It was also probably my least favorite song on the album as a whole which I think speaks for the quality of the rest of the songs because I don't really have any issues with that song on its own. The balance just feels really nice. None of the instruments overpower Clapton's soft voice.

Clapton- not the best Clapton but still light years ahead of most of the tripe on this list.

enjoyable as expected

Love Eric Clapton, he has a such a great sound and plays so effortlessly Top tracks: I Shot the Sheriff, Please Be With Me, Steady Rollin’ Man

Don’t think I knew before reading the article that this is an album of covers…excellent musicianship, and Clapton’s vocals belie the 3 year heroin binge preceding the recording

Surprisingly good. I had low expectations.

Super album

Solid Clapton album

I throughly enjoyed this & think Clapton makes great music. Cocaine will always be one of my favorite drug songs.

Very good. Real music.

Great, easy listening.

today we have quite the chilled-out album on our hands, every track mellow, mild, and really really lazyyyyyy, like you're on a boat or lounging in a chair on a porch. quite a number of good tracks here and there, especially the one i've chosen as my favorite, but i can't say this entire album is full of notable ones. where it does shine though, it certainly does. i hear there's better out there when it comes to ol' clapton. maybe there's more to come, we'll see!

Pretty good chill out album from Clapton. Not a real standout track for me on this one. I was hoping for a more rock centric album with the start of "Motherless Children" but it mellows out after that. Sheriff is the main single I recognized, and there are almost some points in "Let it Grow" that sounded like Stairway to Heaven in the guitar. Nothing to skip here, and there is something to be said for an album you can just put on. Favorite track: "Motherless Children" 3.5/5

This felt great although not 'big hits' great. Kind of like Steely Dan Pretzel Logic which we had recently - just some awesome musician folks hanging around pumping out some cool stuff. Nothing mind-blowing but wow solid consistent groove and feel.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, and certainly much more than Derek and the Dominoes. It's an interesting collection of songs very well done in interesting styles. I never got bored with this one, and in fact appreciated it quite a bit.

I wasn't really looking forward to this one but it was a pleasant, bluesy surprise.

Really enjoyed it. Damn, Clapton has a way with lyrics, infused blues and guitar riffs for days. 4/5!

I Shot the Sheriff is a bop. On side two I liked Please Be With Me and especially the pretty Let It Grow.

Good chill vibes

I think I would like it more if he wasn't a piece of shit but it's still some good jams.

Starts out faster than the rest of the album felt. Enjoyed it enough to get all the way through but I don't necessarily see myself searching this one out on Vinyl or jamming it around the house.

what a jam, incredible guitar, amazing soft rock vibe

Very chill, nice

Some nice songs on this.

typical Clapton Great

Got some bangers like I Shot the Sheriff and Let it Grow but I feel like he has better albums, for example Slowhand

Starts really well with Motherless Children, then I started losing interest until I Shot the Sheriff, then it falls off again until the last couple of tracks which were good, Steady Rollin' Man and Mainline Florida. I'll give it a low 4/5. I'd definitely listen again and maybe those other tracks would grow on me more. A very specific thing to mention, I really liked the thud of the bass drum on this album.

I've always liked Clapton more as a hired gun, and not as a solo artist (although the blues album he did back in the 90s is f***ing great). This is a very laid-back album, and really puts him in a more jammy kinda mood, which works really well for him. He was mellow, the drugs were mellow, everything was pretty mellow. "Willie and the Hand Jive" is a bit too nasally for him, though. I always thought he should have put it in a lower key or something so it didn't sound like he was whining while he performed it. "I Shot The Sheriff"... I mean, for a lot of us it was the first version we heard, so there is some slightly affection to it. But then we heard the original Bob Marley version and were like "well, yeah of COURSE this is better..." I wish more of his recent stuff had guest vocalists sing while he just played. I don't want to say "Shut and Play Yer Guitar," but... "Shut and Play Yer Guitar." Solid album, always good to listen to.

My god can Clapton play the guitar. And he always surrounds himself with great musicians. The opening licks to Motherless Children are awesome. After that, they really slow it down on side one, which works for Give Me Strength (you probably didn't believe Clapton's voice could tug on your emotions like that until Tears in Heaven came out decades later) and Willie and the Hand Jive (just as good as the original) but never really won me over on I Shot the Sheriff (Marley's version is superior; this version sounds a bit hokey). Still, side one is solid. Side two is a bit more hit or miss. It opens nicely with the loud and heavy blues of I Can't Hold Out and it closes with a couple rollicking remakes in Steady Rollin Man and Mainline Florida. But in between Please Be With Me and Let it Grow are just okay; I like the tempo but Clapton's vocals are so-so and his back-up singers save the two. And yeah the latter definitely has times where it sounds too much like Stairway to Heaven. Conflicted. Side one is a 4 and side two is a 3. So do I round up or down? Total coin flip and I understand if you go the other way.

K. Another unknown for me. Well, it's got Hand Jive & I Shot the Sheriff. 4/5

Best song - Motherless Children

Killer guitar. Laid back vibe. It’s great.

Definitely was born wrong era for Clapton obsession to have gotten its hooks in me, but passes the smell test of like "Ok it makes sense that older people have so much affection for his music". Or like unlike morrissey, the music here's good enough that I feel kinder about people loudly having a complicated relationship with listening to & enjoying the scumbag artist

"461 Ocean Boulevard" is the second solo studio album by English musician Eric Clapton. It was his return to the studio after a three year hiatus dealing with his heroin addiction. The studio was in Miami and the album title was the address of the house he lived in during the recording. A decent generic description of the musical styles is songs ranging from bright blues rock to sentimental ballads. There's also a good split of covers and originals. Commercially, the album hit #1 in the US and #3 in the UK. Layered guitar riffs opens "Motherless Child," a Blind Willie Dixon cover. Rolling drums. EC on the slide guitar. Another cover "Willie and the Hand Jive" gets the groove going. A good song to get that laid back vibe that pervades throughout this album. Oh, we'll just keep on with the covers and this one a big one in Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." I remember when this came out; how could you miss it, it was everywhere. The reggae groove. The guitar and piano. Great backing female vocals. We get a whole bunch of that on the second side. A slow acoustic guitar and EC whispering begin "Let It Grow." A nice melodic guitar. One of the stars of the album is the vocals of Yvonne Elliman. Just outstanding on this. There's more of a tougher guitar riff in the album closer "Mainline Florida." Some more great backing vocals. A great groove. It appears to be simply about recording in Florida. I forgot how solid an album this is. Sure, you do not get the guitar highs of EC with John Mayall or Derek and the Dominos but there's plenty here to like. It is a laid back vibe and maybe it's the time it was recorded. The band is tight. Yvonne Elliman's vocals are great. EC does use acoustic, slide and layered guitars. An album worth checking out or re-checking out again.

3.7 Fuck clapton. (this is pretty good) Fave songs: I shot the sheriff, let it grow, motherless children

Favourite songs: I Shot The Sheriff, Steady Rollin' Man, I Can't Hold Out, Motherless Children, Willie and the Hand Jive, Mainline Florida, Please Be With Me Least favourite songs: Get Ready 4/5

A fantastic album that I will be gladly listening to again! Legendary guitarist!

I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. I liked Clapton's work in the Yardbirds and Cream but I thought I wouldn't like his more blues-y solo stuff - I was wrong and I really liked most of the songs and especially his 'slowhand' guitar style. Good album overall.

I had never really listened to much Eric Clapton before this album. I have always thought of him as one of the greatest guitarists of all time from the work of his I had heard like \"While My Guitar Gently Weeps\", \"Sunshine of Your Love\" and \"Layla\". This album cemented my opinion of him in that regard completely. The guitar work on this album was great and it blended incredibly well with his vocals. This was a great listen from start to finish and I would give it like a 9-9.5/10.

I had a good time with the album. Didn't blow me away but it was a great soundtrack to my Bloodborne sesh. Incredible guitar of course.

I made more fun of these guys than they deserve. Pretty good.

Eric Clapton is just really good at guitar and that is all I have to say.

Really nice sounding album, though little tame TBH. Good for him quitting heroin. I Shot the Sheriff is a really good cover though I don’t believe him. 3.5

I’ve never been that big of a Clapton guy as I think his solo stuff is not as good as something like Cream, and this kind of proves that. 461 Ocean Boulevard is a fine album, but it’s certainly nothing revolutionary. I don’t hate this album, but for whatever reason I just don’t click with it. The blues rock and funk rock sound of this album is really great, with songs like Motherless Children and Get Ready showcasing the sounds of this album fantastically. It peaks with a cover of Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sheriff, seamlessly combining blues and funk into one nice track. The other tracks are also pretty good but none are quite as memorable in my opinion. But here is where we get to the big problem: I don’t like Clapton as a vocalist. He’s a fine guitarist who makes good music, but I don’t like his vocals that much. I think his vocals worked in Cream when it is also mixed with Bruce and Baker (and also more psychedelic music), but they just don’t click with me here. They’re not insufferable but it’s not something that I am a big fan of. I don’t really have anything more to add. This was a fine album worthy of a 7/10.

Yacht rock blues vibe very nice

4 ja gilla bob marley covern å resten va slick också

Good blues album from the original white boy of blues.

After reading other reviews I unterstood I have no idea who Eric Clapton is. But anyway, I enjoyed the music, so it's non-judgmental 4

Fave track: I shot the sheriff 3.5 but I'll round up cause I'm feeling generous today.

It's a nice album Eric Clapton, congratulations. Nice songs, great riffs, amazing guitar solos, groovy jams, excellent vocals. It somehow felt a little bit too manufactured, but I might be projecting too much. Just a very solid album, much better than the one with "Layla" in it, recorded with Derek and the Dominoes. Good effort, but even though I had nice time listening to it, I won't be coming back to this record anytime soon.

Nice bluesy album with some beautiful backing vocals. Only knew the I Shot the Sheriff cover and the original of the Robert Johnson cover. Top songs: Get Ready, and Please Be with me and the extra track Give Me Strength Could be dropped: the Robert Johnson cover.

This album was really relaxing to have in the background while I playing a game. I also really liked the instrumentation on this album, even if the lyrics were just okay on some songs.

sonzao

What an increidble blues guitar. I can see why this guy is hailed as the best. Blues guitar is not my thing, but I could see myself putting it on.

Blues. Funk

Think of Clapton's political opinions what you will but this is a classical album with a laid-back attitude. While I personally prefer JJ Cale, this album is gorgeous with all that you need from a blues rock guitarist.

Veel lekker nummers. De beste man kan aardig gitaarspelen.

I had never actually heard a lot of these songs. I thought they were good. There were only a couple boring ones that didn’t do anything exciting.

Another great classic from when I was aluve

Score: 70 Album Art: 60 Eric clapton my head on a pillow cause this shit make me fall asleep All jokes aside it's actually quite nice. It's mixed and produced well, the singing and lyrics are good. Shooting the sheriff is based. Let it grow is an epic song. It's quiet as hell on spotify which is perfect for falling asleep to.

I grew up with Tears In Heaven, so I was thoroughly sick of Clapton before I ever gave him a chance. This album was surprisingly good. I know he's regarded as a great guitar player, I can now agree with that assessment. I enjoyed this album and appreciated the musicianship. However I did skip I Shot The Sheriff... it's just a bad version to me.

Good album from one of the great.

Mostly covers, but it’s Eric Clapton, so they’re great listening. Especially liked Motherless Children. I Shot the Sheriff is good, of course, but more credit to Bob Marley for that.

I think this is one of my favourite Clapton albums

приятненько

He didn’t shoot the deputy but this album just doesn’t miss

Classic Clapton.

Of course some good classics on this one. Also liked "Willie and the Hand Jive"

Great ! Love it!

First Clapton thing I think I've heard that I've gone "Ohhh I do quite like that actually"

Pretty chill work by Mr Clapton. Love his version of “I Shot the Sheriff” most of the rest of album really solid. I actively dislike the song “ Let it Grow” as it’s been grating on my nerves every time I’ve heard it since 1974 (old guy here). Overall it’s worthy of a 3.5 and rounding up because it’s Eric.

Overall great listen! Was not familiar with most of the album - on first listened there were some real standouts. Second listen is getting even better.

v good

Excellen

Motherless children: feels slightly like classic Clapton, a good song with good guitar but all instruments create a great blend. Replay ability for sure. 3/5 Give me strength: a bluesy feel to this song. Nice and slow and one with impeccable guitar once again. One with great replay ability and Clapton’s vocals lend themself to the song. 3/5 Will and hand jive: funky. As an album as a whole all songs up to here blend well. Just sounds good doesn’t it. It’s very catchy. 4/5 Get ready: dunno if it’s just me or if it’s supposed to be this way but it sounds identical to the previous song with more of a reggae style? For that reason. 2/5 I shot the sheriff: a cover of a 5/5 song. This does it justice but just made me want to listen to bob Marley. So 4/5 I can’t hold out: it’s a good song with blues and reggae influence with a good guitar but it just doesn’t do too much to me. 2/5 Please be with me: I nice ballad. Very cool and relaxing song by me Clapton. Love the backing vocals and lyrics. And the guitar is just masterful. 3/5 Let it grow: I think the sound is good but nothing special but I am easily persuaded by a song about just life. 2/5 Steady rollin man: funky: this whole album is perfectly put together. Soemthing my grandad would listen to I believe. Good song. Good guitar ofc. 3/5 Mainline Florida: I’m ill and tired but cool song. 2/5 Total: 3/5

Eric Clapton is wat van alle markten thuis. Fantastisch muzikant, goede songwriter. Ik vond dit een leuk album

About as good as it ever got as far as an Eric Clapton solo effort is concerned. Credit has to go to the enthusiastic presence of the remarkable Yvonne Elliman. It's her strong backup vocals that cover the inefficiencies of Clapton's. She enjoyed some success as a solo artist after this album's release, and even scored a number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. But she should have enjoyed a longer run. It turns out she quit the business for an extended period of time to raise her children. Meanwhile, Clapton kept churning out hit or miss (mostly miss) material, seemingly on the basis that he should remain forever recognized as a "Guitar God" while wrestling with alcoholism, always blaming his destructive behavior on the bottle.

When I told my wife how great this Eric Clapton album was, she replied, "Of course...it's Eric Clapton." Well, yeah. But I guess I kind of always considered Eric Clapton a greatest hits king. Even one of my favorite artists of all-time, Tom Petty, only has a couple albums I truly love, but he has tons of hits that are among my favorite songs. This Clapton album, however, was solid from start to finish. I loved his tone, the twang of the slide guitar in so many of the tracks, and of course, the solos. What I didn't love, or at least why this album is a 4 or 4.5 instead of 5, is Clapton's vocals. I can't tell if it's that his voice isn't great or if vocals were just too low in the mix (or maybe the vocals were muddled because it's not his strong suit!). Either way, I really loved this album and have already returned to it since my first listen-through.

Iconic sound! I shot the sheriff

This is JJ Cale Troubadour mixed with Jimi Hendrix Are you experienced, with a sprinkle of Sting at his most Police pinnacle summiting moments. Eric, what a muso.

I punished Eric on the last one for being a racist bugger, so I will be generous here and say, I Shot The Sheriff is a great cover, and Let it Grow is a beautiful ballad.

This is probably Clapton’s best album. The first half is good blues rock and the second half goes into more deliberate folk influenced rock. The influence of the Band is clear and I think overall it is this influence that makes this album so great. Clapton is at his core, a blues guitarist and anything that gets him to expand his horizons results in something more interesting.

I really enjoyed this tape. A lot funkier than I had anticipated. A lot of soul and just easy listening all around. Will definitely return to it. 7.5/10.

Good blues. Not everyday

Solid, nice listen. Calming. Enjoy the album cover very much.

Finally! An album that I enjoyed! Loved the music and the lyrics! Not something I would buy but definitely something I enjoyed.

I enjoyed most of the songs.

4/5 Good classic album that felt surprisingly country / folky for what I was expecting from the clap man. Had me nodding my head and moving my feet throughout.

Pretty Mellow - shame he's such a racist

Great!

Regardless how I feel about Eric Clapton as a person (which is not great), there is no denying he is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. The great thing about Clapton, and it's on full display on this album, is that he didn't have to be showy or over-the-top to show his abilities on guitar. This album is full of interesting, laid-back songs crossing several genres. Probably his best solo album. 4 stars.

I really enjoyed discovering this album. Of course, I knew « I Shot the Sheriff », but that was the only song on the album that I had heard before. Many of them are simply beautiful. I couldn’t understand the juxtaposition of the manic « Motherless Child » and the prayerful « Give me strength » until I read about this being Clapton’s first studio album in three years that were wasted on a serious drug habit. It’s as if he is contrasting the craziness of those years with a rediscovered love of music and a desire to live a more productive, peace-filled life. All in all, an album I would listen to many times.

I don’t get why people would feel really strongly about Clapton one way or another. This album was decent, just like all his others on the list. 7/10

Really liked this one! Impressive talent, great great music. Southern bluesy rock. Replayed immediately

Oooh zeer goed en mooi

“I Shot the Sheriff” is originally written and popularized by Bob Marley. Clapton first heard the song when a member of his band played it and convinced to make their own version of the song. At first, Clapton did not want to use it on their album because he thinks it might seem disrespectful for Marley. His members and managers convinced him that it should not only be included on the album but also be released as a single. Yeah... I'm sure he thought it was disrespectful... Lol

Great bluse album.

There are some seriously good guitar licks on this. Several other albums I've listened to in this journey feature a strong album spoilt by one or two songs that are obviously a parody/joke song - which might be funny the first time you hear it, do not stand up to repeated listens. This is a solid, well thought out collection of songs - Clapton's guitar playing is a good as you have heard - not just technical, but balanced. Quiet and supportive during the tender moments, and fast, powerful and dynamic during others. 8/10

Even though he's a twat, it is a Nlnice album and all the tracks are pretty enjoyable. Plus obviously some very talented guitar playing. "Please be with Me" and "Let it Go" my favourite tracks.

Rock em roll

I love his skill and his hits. What I don't like is that most of those hits were written by other people. JJ Cale, Marley, black blues artists. They are credited, so props there because that wasn't always the case in those days. But Clapton is such a skilled musician I'd think he could write his own hits. Still, as an album, this is a great listen and has great music.

very country-y in a way i don't usuaally listen to, still solid

Very nice

If you asked me before, I would have told you I didn't care for Eric Clapton so I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this album! I prefer this folksy/bluesy type of sound from him -- I especially loved the song Please Be With Me.

This was a really good album, reminded me a lot of the Eagles. I'm a little upset I hadn't heard this album sooner.

Bluesy and folksy, definitely a tamer version of the Clapton I've listened to. "I Shot The Sheriff" is an excellent rendition. Reminds me of the Eagles, or a version of country I could get behind.

Easy listening. Clapton has songs showcasing various music styles, such as reggae, blues, and country.

A great, easy listen by Clapton. Could see myself relaxing on a beach in Florida listening to this. The guitar work, as many others have pointed out, is phenomenal and adds another layer to listening. I actually think the album starts on a lower note with 'Motherless Children,' but picks up dramatically from there. By the third song, 'Willie and the Hand Jive,' I was completely bought in to the album.

So...this stuff isn't Cream? I am way off on when Clapton went solo. This 70s style rock is something special though. Eagles, Clapton, even later Beatles all have this vibe. Easy listening, masterful guitar, and smooth vocals. I'm saddened by his recent diatribes about vaccines. It is hard to separate that stuff from the music since its all about strength, planting your love and letting it grow, etc. I mean - Pot? Meet kettle.

Enjoyable and smooth

Much better than i thought. Probably a 4.6

Eric Clapton is Eric Clapton. A blues man who knows how to make a guitar speak. This album while iconic is still fairly flawed for Clapton. Still recovering from a serious accident and strung out on a drug cocktail, makes this album sloppy in areas. Recorder at an iconic house that I believe the Stones had just got finished recording and suggested to Clapton. Still can't complain about Clapton because even on a bad day he has more talent in his pinkie then most.

Great to listen to!

When I was first recommended this album, I had to turn my nose up a bit. Given Eric's idiocy as of late (and past display of racism), I wasn't looking forward to this album. And I also wasn't looking forward to how good this is. I went into this thinking that this is the start of a inevitable decline and that Eric's beat days were behind him; turns out that this is his best solo outing. Plenty of toe tapping and head bopping songs here, with moments of genuinely moving songs. Real good stuff. Favorites: Motherless Children, Give Me Strength, Willie and the Hand Jive, Get Ready, Please Be With Me, Let It Go.

I really enjoy more than I thought I would 4.5

Clapton's updated raw vision of the blues that followed his heroin addiction, this is the transition piece that led him to his modern mainstay. As news about Clapton being a piece of shit continually make headlines, it's time to remember, even assholes can be talented. 4/5.

I think this might be the first Eric Clapton album I've actually sat down and listened to, and you know what? Really easy listening. Enjoyed more than I thought I would.

Really enjoyed it - always thought Sheriff was a bit gimmicky - but the rest of the album is good solid drug induced blues. Peak Clapton

Solid, gotta love the intro guitar riff

A little loosey goosey/less guitar driven but still good. I shot the sheriff!

Fun for the whole family

Gets better with each listening.

sorta good. Motherless Children, I Shot The Sheriff

really calming and nice! i think i got clapton mixed up with neal diamond

"Willie and the Hand Jive" has a super cool groove. Overall, this album is boomer music but cool boomer music.

My father had two Eric Clapton albums when I was a kid: 461 Ocean Boulevard and Behind the Sun. At the time I liked the latter one. Nowadays I appreciate the laid back vibe of this one more. Songs like "Let It Grow" and "I Shot the Sheriff" are like a big tank of oxygen in a busy life. Of course the Bob Marley original is better, but this one is magnificent too.

okay, was getting more into it by the last few songs

I SHOT THE SHERIFF BUT I DID NOT SHOOT THE DEPUTY

Good flow

Clapton in a god

This was good, enjoyed it. Some classics and the rest pretty listenable, not outstanding to me but still a keeper

Very good, some hits, slow

I have always enjoyed eric Clapton and this album is no exception, fantastic album!

Huge variety with Rock, blues, folk and funk sounds. Can’t hold out, steady rolling man, please be with me. Not too fancy, just smooth delivery by a cool dude.

Classic rock

it twas swag

Nice 70s rock/blues album, got what I expected, wasn't disappointed.

Very nice, love Eric Clapton, solid 8/10. I gotta be in the mood for this tho, I couldn't always listen to it. So maybe 7.5? Okay help this is a 2 hour Album?

The highs are really high. The lower points can kind of sound like boring generic 70s pop rock. It could draw on/meander at times towards the end of the album. Still, great album that definitely stood out during the era.

Good album. Motherless children is a banger.

Actually really groovy. Bluesy, mellow rock.

One of the most renowned return to form in pop history. Layback tunes to enjoy in the evening of a cool summer day

Good memories!

Much bluesier and a little groovier than expected. Clapton's rendition of "I Shot the Sheriff" is very similar to Bob Marley and the Wailers' version. Overall a very pleasing album with well thought out composition.

Great álbum. Let It Grown

Solid. Great guitar work. No idea before this that I Shot The Sheriff was an Eric Clapton song.

A lot more chilled out than a lot of the EC things I typically think of. Learnt some new stuff which I enjoyed

well, he's the man with the guitar. that was a great album, and what control and WHAT A SOUND on that thing. it's not an ultra favorite, but he's great.

Clapton is god. One of the greatest guitarists ever and an overall very good album. No duds but also not a lot of mega hits, just some very solid tunes.

It's great

Highly enjoyable

Good times and good tunes. Nothing out of this world, but some hot pickin and well-written songs. I Shot the Sherriff is pretty top notch.

My first time getting into the Clap. I'd heard the hits, obviously, but never an entire album. Enjoyable.

Quality stuff, including shooting the sherif.

Very pleasant rock

Really strong first half (b/t Motherless Children and I Shot the Sheriff) with a pretty disappointing second half. Get Ready is a wonderful song, and Clapton's voice is complimented by Yvonne Elliman's. The second half of the album does seem to mellow in a way that isn't particularly compelling (Please Be With Me epitomizes this melting away into guitar twang and softly sung words). The album does seem to pick up with Steady Rollin' Man and ends with a pounding flourish with Mainline Florida, but it isn't enough to rescue the second half from itself. I understand the criticism that Clapton's guitar-playing seems to melt into the background in this album. It rarely seems to be the emphasis in these songs, which leaves me wondering what the emphasis is. At its best (Motherless Children; I Shot the Sheriff), the album seems to be good because of the arrangement rather than Clapton's skill. However, I don't find that the arrangement of these covers is distinct enough from the originals (especially I Shot the Sheriff, I Can't Hold Out, Willie and the Hand Jive, Please Be With Me). What's worse, in some cases (particularly I Can't Hold Out) Clapton's rearrangement somehow dims the song itself (although it is noticeable that this song might be the one where his guitar playing is most prominent).

Pretty good.

Ziemlich gut und mellow ^^

Nice album, want to listen to again!

Classic Clapton, good listen

fucked up notes for last album but it was good if repetitive, 7/10. yeah im playing double catch up witht this. about the same level of quality as last album too! not as consistent, but drags a lot less. some (a lot) of this is boring old white ppl music but as ive mentioned b4 my dads a boomer and played me a ton of his old white ppl music on the radio so like im partial to it. motherless children is still a great song! after that it varies between "pretty fun time" to the horrifically lame pop reggae track known only as willie and the hand jive. mostly a good time though. nothing especially attention getting for most of the runtime but its nice enough 7/10

Very enjoyable. Smooth laid back bluesy rock… what’s not to like!

It's OK

The top of the album made me think this was gonna be pretty bad but he pulled me back about halfway in with the folky vibe. Really love that 70s Americana sound - does this count as yacht rock? It kinda sounds like yacht rock. Sidenote: Why the Bob Marley cover. Wtf was that. -.5 for that Highlight: Please Be With Me

Fun but soulless music. I don’t know man something about Eric Clapton rubs me the wrong way

Getting Clapton the day after Hendrix, let's see how these two GOAT guitarists compare. My first impression is that Hendrix uses everything BUT the guitar in a much more cohesive way than Clapton. Clapton is probably a little bit more technical than Hendrix but Hendrix is far more creative. Actually, I take it back. Hendrix is more talented in every way. Clapton has moments but like not that many, at least for this album. ...is Willie and the Hand Jive about jerkin it to your family? Christ. I shot the Sheriff is (by a long way) the best song here. But this album is a far cry from his days at Cream or Derek and the Domino's. I expected better out of a legendary name, but sometimes a guy has a speciality and shouldn't be left to their own devices. Clapton is a great guitarist, but a poor songwriter. That said, this album does end pretty hard with Let it Grow, Steady Rollin Man and Mainline Florida.

Perfectly servicable. Art over artist problem?

He can really really play but whole albums of his I find boring, so sorry my dude

Fine album, nothing really stood out to me. I could see myself coming back at some point, but idk when that will happen.

Pretty fine. Not the most interesting album ever.

Honestly, a solid guitar player/singer songwriter that reminds me of my dad

It's a decent album with some great, classic songs, but overall it's underwhelming.

I have long held the thought that Clapton is a better musician when he isn't the center of all immediate attention; his era in the Bluesbreakers and Yardbirds, Cream, Derek & The Dominoes...he had a nice hot streak before the solo material began. "Motherless Children" is easily the best solo song of his I've heard up to this point but that's a small list (this album, a handful of tracks elsewhere but "Cocaine" is the only one that comes to mind immediately).

This is good, much better than D&tD-L&OALS. Eric Clapton is a minor artist.

Eric Clapton doesn’t have an original thought in his head and seems like a world class taint but he can rock from time to time. Blues isn’t about originality it’s about playing the same riff everyone else does with 1/16th more verve and he does that well. Still a taint tho.

Lots of hate for Clapton here. Separating art from artist, this was enjoyable enough bluesy dad rock. 3* Highlights: I shot the sheriff

Musically it's nothing special. Not terrible, but just okay. Eric Clapton can frig right off though.

Good songs and amazing guitar playing. I wasn't too invested in this, but maybe I should give it another listen someday and I might like it better.

Didn't love it, didn't dislike it. This was OK and I wouldn't object to hearing it again but I won't seek it out.

Was it simple? Yes, did it sound good also yes. I shot the sheriff still slaps. Idk I just didn’t feel as connected to the other songs as mych

Never really settles into a vibe, or more crucially a volume. There are a bunch of quieter funky cuts which just completely defeats the purpose of their funkiness. When it gets it right it goes off tho

I liked it but I’m feelin’ awful right now. So we’re giving it a three flat.

Maybe not for me. Not objectively bad, just a bit boring for my tastes.

Yeah it was pretty good

Ah, back to high school. This one was more popular with some of my friends than with me, though I certainly know it well. I was always partial to "Please Be With Me" and "Let It Grow" off this album. If we were allowed to award half stars I'd give it 3 1/2 for being a cut above a 3 but not quite reaching the level of remarkability I have to see to grant a 4.

A fun album with a few above-average songs, but doesn't rate with some of Clapton's other work.

Smooth rock

Some good songs. Nothing special though. Pretty mid.

This is good and he knows how to play the guitar. But it's not very exciting.

Love some blues and Clapton can deliver.

You have to learn to separate the musician from their personal baggage. Plenty of great artists have made terrible decisions. If you needed to know how good Clapton's decision making skills are he was a heroin addict. As for the album, this is a pretty vanilla blues-rock record. Nothing on it is bad, but very little of it rises to the level of great. It's an easy enough listen, and there are some fun guitar moments throughout, but that's also the bare minimum expectation when you're listening to Eric Clapton.

Overall, I enjoyed this more than I thought that I would. A couple songs that were familiar, a few bluesy tunes I had not, and a few I could have done without.

Good album :D

This was decent. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it.

Great music, shame it's made by a terrible person.

Der er nogle fine sange imellem.

I like his voice and style. Not a bad album.

I'm not looking up this Eric Clapton fellow -- methinks he is a bit of an unsavoury character! I like this album, whatever he did. Imagine letting a little sexual assault cloud your judgement.

This was mostly just background noise for the first half, nothing terrible, but all just mid-tempo low energy 70s soft rock that didn't do anything too interesting. The second half definitely picked up the energy though and the bigger emphasis on the group backing vocals helped too. 3/5

Pretty solid album here. Some decent variety and I enjoyed the cover of I Shot the Sheriff.

No. 212 Solid Blues Rock. I can't say I particularly liked it, but I also didn't notice anything negative about this album.

it was eric clapton indeed the cover is pretty

Pretty good rock album.

Middle of the road stuff. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

Actually quite enjoyed it. Quite good

Pretty good. 3.5/5

Better than the last Clapton but still utterly forgettable.

I know that I shouldn’t like Eric Clapton because of his terrible remarks about black people and because of the fact that his guitar playing is stolen from true blues musicians. But I still like the music and the vibe. I can play his records on used vinyl. That way I don’t contribute to his economy

It is most definitely an Eric Clapton blues album. There's no questioning Clapton's skills, nor his sensibilities about the blues. It's the must-listen part of this that's questionable. Clapton was a central figure in the British scene that introduced a lot of (white) folks to the blues and he was a very competent player in his own right. He also spent time and effort trying to elevate his heroes who he felt had been overlooked. On the other hand, he's kind of a piece of shit human, so I'm not so comfortable making excuses for him anymore. Just go listen to one of the three Kings (BB, Albert and Freddie). Or Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, Lightning Hopkins or one of the Mississippis (John Hurt or Fred McDowell). Or fucking Muddy Waters. Or Taj Mahal. Or somebody modern! (Gary Clark Jr. is highly accessible for a rock audience.) The album is highly competent and just a little bit straight. A bit of the blues dressed up in Sunday clothes, which takes some of the soul out of it. Like low-fat, low-sugar BBQ. This is a must-listen if you want to hear Clapton's musical journey. Clapton's musical journey isn't a bad listen and it's not a bad story and it even charts some of the movements of the British scene for guitar-based music through his life. However, there are other ways to get a sense of the larger musical trends, so I'll suggest that this is low on the list of must-listens: 3/5, could've been a 4. Cream was better.

I know it's hip to hate on Clapton, but it's decent, not gonna lie.

Good emulation of great Black blues musicians.

Cuando conocí la musica de Clapton pensé que iba a ser un gran artista que me iba a encantar, pero resulto siendo meh

I never understood the hype about Eric Clapton. Sure he's a fine guitar player (and so are many others) but it's all a bit sterile and I love my blues edgier than this. Score does not take his racist history into account because he seems to have bettered his life and has done an event for Gaza - kudos to that. A few good songs but only 2.5 songs on the album are his! It's mostly a cover album. So a 3 will absolutely do for me.

3 out of 5. Some good guitar work here.

Very good

Клэп по пизде ладошкой клэп

Ok album. Standout songs: Motherless Children Steady Rollin man

pretty cute, nothing more nothing less

Not bad. I liked the guitar work and the rest was decent to listen to. 3.5/5

as a dumb, young kid, i was a big clapton fan. i bought into the near two-decade hype of the never correct "clapton is god". even before adult me learned how much of a POS clapton likely is, i had soured on his music. this is not to say that this album is bad. it really is not. the band is top notch, and clapton’s rhythm work really shines on the album. mercifully short are his solos, and I really do like his dobro and slide playing here. would I listen to the album again? probably not, but i don’t begrudge hearing it one more time

So I just learned yesterday that Clapton was with the Yardbirds way back, I remember Cream and Derek and the Dominos. This album is okay. Was never a fan of I Shot the Sheriff, still not. Let it Grow was good, reminded me of Blind Faith. Hard to forgive his racism and anti science beliefs.

Eric's voice always reminds me of the Cream days. I'd listen to anything from that era. Not so much from his solo carreer. Theres a couple of really good blues songs here, the classic Bob Marley cover It's... ok, i get it, i heard it, not coming back to it. Congrats mr Clapton, you made a decent album.

Fairly subdued blues rock. Not bad, but nothing special. My favorite track was "Get Ready". It felt like Clapton was larping as an American on this album which I don't appreciate. 2.5 stars.

Mr slowhands

A strong argument can be made that this is Clapton’s best solo record. Very little filler, a few choice covers, and some killer blues rock numbers like “Motherless Children” and “Mainline Florida”. Also the touching ballad “Let It Grow”. He was rarely this tight and focused as a solo artist.

Stuart FL type beat

Ne mogu reći da je loše ali je stvarno poprilično dosadno.

Ninguna canción me llamo la atención, pero tampoco me disgusto. La dejé de fondo mientras hacía cosas y estaba bien

Not as bad as I thought it would be, I really liked the sound although it did get quite repetitive and the lyricism wasn’t very deep at all. Favourite - steady rollin’ man

Very good, but the star of the album being a cover ...mmm ..

Even if Clapton is a dick, I expect him to make more interesting records. This is fine, but hardly a classic. Don't do heroin, kids. In fact...don't do anything this guy does.

This is totally fine but not giving on here is groundbreaking for when it came out. None of his best music is on here though the cover of”I Shot the Sheriff” is a classic. I cannot believe he felt comfortable writing “Give Me Strength” but I guess he did do that super racist rant while making his career from playing Black music. “Let it Grow” sounds like the beginning of stairway to heaven. High 3

It was alright as far as I am concerned. Nothing too special about it other than the cover of I Shot The Sheriff.

it's ok. expectations were met. I'm familiar with Clapton through listening to Cream and a few of his singles. First full album of Clapton I've heard and no surprises here. easy listening Blues/Rock music.

Yeah, some of that was same same and some of that was pretty cool.

Okay but uninteresting
