Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Couple things that stood out. This came out in 1974 and has the cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" which came out only 1 year earlier in 1973. I thought that was a longer gap. Also, this sounded like Clapton in the 80's but it was '74. Didn't realize he changed that much so fast after Cream.
Clapton might be an ass, but he does make good music
Clapton tries Americana - largely free of the noodling that does little for me, there's a nice blend of guitar tones, some decent songs and some beautiful Hammond. Not bad, for a Clapton album
Yeah this album was pretty good. Fan of the crooner sort of vibe he had going on. Favorite track was Get Ready. He kind of has this Bob Dylan drawl on this track I'm really in to.
A few standout songs, but pretty average listen overall.
Disciplined Clapton
—Motherless Children…fun groove —Give Me Strength…solid —Willie and the Hand Jive…like the keyboards. damn you, Eric, I’m not hating this —Get Ready…solid groove. appreciate bringing another singer —I Shot the Sheriff…”see? I’m not racist, y’all, I’m doing reggae!” —I Can’t Hold Out…I like how restrained(?) this is. Nobody’s showing off but we get a nice, easy groove —Please Be With Me…very nice. reminds of the religious tracks from O Brother, Where Art Thou? —Let It Grow…decent easy listening —Steady Rollin’ Man…generic but great groove —Mainline Florida…damn you, Clapton, for making me enjoy this
Started off very strong but the energy faded by track 3 for me. Very impressive guitar playing as expected from Clapton.
Always been a Clapton fan. Twelve-bar blues format often gets tiring for me quickly, but these blues songs keep it fresh and he offers lots of tunes outside of that format.
Yup, that’s Clapton
This folk's got a little kick to it Favourite track: I Shot The Sheriff
No Derek. No Domino's. Not for me.
One of the original guitar gods before the nonsense.
Ok
eh está bien supongo
It's ok. It drags on for too long and while I like Clapton's playing I think the songs here are lacking for the most part and the best track is just straight outta Bob Marley and I'd rather listen to that one. The reggae influence is clear and the mellow sounds are OK but it's nothing to write home about. I'm aware that this was his return album after overcoming a heroin addiction. So good for Eric I guess, but that won't make me love the album more or anything.
I really enjoyed I Shot The Sheriff but beyond that nothing really stood out to me. There was nothing bad but nothing I’ll remember in a week’s time either.
Very nice, i loved steady rollin man specifically
I can't get to excited about Eric Clapton. Everything on here has been done better elsewhere. Let it Grow is good.
Mid album for Clapton
Solid Blues Rock. I can't say I particularly liked it, but I also didn't notice anything negative about this album.
He may be a terrible racist and all round knob, also his songs aren’t great, but the tone of his guitar is really amazing
"461 Ocean Boulevard" is a nice album. It opens with a great track called "Motherless Children", with its intro being stellar. Sadly, that's as good as "461 Ocean Boulevard" gets. All tracks (except "Let It Grow") on "461 Ocean Boulevard" fail to be on the same level as "Motherless Children". I think the two songs I love on the album would make a great single. 3 stars for "461 Ocean Boulevard".
nice, carino
I like this one. Other than I shot the sheriff, I enjoyed the laid back vibe and great guitar riffs.
Some good stuff some fine stuff
Very pleasant
Clapton doesn't exactly miss with this collection of mostly covers, but nothing here feels incredibly special. Standout Tracks: I Shot the Sheriff Let It Grow
Some great stuff. Some boring stuff. Clapton is of course guitar Jesus so all of that sounds good. But sometimes it’s the only interesting part of a song.
I fucking hate that Eric Clapton is such a piece of shit because I did really enjoy parts of this album
Wow I set out thinking that Clapton was looked upon as a national treasure then I read all the comments on here alleging that he is a racist (bad) and also an anti vax exponent (depends which side of fence you sit) Neither of these two things had I associated with him before. I thought his biggest crime was being an adulterer but because George was OK with that I had forgiven him. Clapton was one of my original musical heroes when he was with Cream so have followed his career and I was totally unaware of the racism thing. Particularly when he has largely championed black music. Strange, maybe more of a US thing than UK? Anyhow Clapton was, as they say ‘God’s in my book, when with Cream but not as much in his subsequent career. This album is an example of that. Some fine guitar playing but some of the songs on the album just don’t resonate with me. Although the same songs which appear on his later live albums and given new life with orchestration and longer guitar solos do. Many say that this is Clapton’s finest work but I fail to see that. What came before and after this is far superior. But I enjoyed listening to this again today as a one off. Only wish that the racism thing hadn’t come to my attention through this and tainted my appreciation of what a fine guitar player he is. 3/5 8/3/26
I didn't think I would ever find an Eric Clapton project I would really fall head over heels for until I turned on 461 Ocean Boulevard and was showed what Eric could truly do when given his full creative freedoms. The choice of both original music and covers that Eric decides to bring to the table show off quite a range I feel hasn't ever been so accessible until this very point in time in my listening journey to himself. I knew of Eric as this rock star of sorts but this project shows a lot of charisma and emotion I thought was always missing from his vocal efforts on previous projects. The first half of this album absolutely clears the second half with the exception of Mainline Florida. You should know going into this project exactly what you are about to hear and I feel with that being said this album doesn't really do anything super crazy with its' very run of the mill Blues Rock sound. Not much to say here other than this is a pretty solid time all around!
give me strength get ready 6/10
Trying to separate the (horrible) man and just focus on his music here. I didn’t hate it. It starts off quite ripping with the guitar work in “motherless children”. Lots of rocky blues. The cover of “I shot the sheriff” just felt like a white guy attempt at a carbon copy of the original. Ok but not a standout.
Clapton turns out a mix of California soft rock and manicured blues, which was popular with the masses of middle aged Americans who didn't get the Glam Rock of their kids. Even a toothless version of "I shot the sherrif" didn't really get the emotions going. Tepid.
Ah the blues, I should like it more, and I don’t dislike it but I never truly love it. And that’s the case for this album. Clapton is undeniably a great guitar player and he wrings soul out of his playing but the songs are largely uninspiring. Some like let it grow are interesting as they branch off into other ideas. But there’s just not enough of that
Seemed like a replay of things that had been done better by blues men before him or better by Bob Marley. Who knows maybe my time line is wrong
Not a Clapton fan but this is one of his better albums.
The lads a racist fuck This album is good He doesnt mind stealing from races he hates apparently
Lowkey restrained.
While Eric Clapton is undoubtedly talented, I struggled to connect with this record, finding it somewhat monotone. Additionally, I found Clapton's lyrics beneath his work as part of Derek and the Dominoes. So, like my previous reviews of albums like The Cars and Appetite for Destruction, this is an album I respect, but don't really like. Best track: Give Me Strength (nice old-timy country tune) Worst track: I Shot the Sheriff (Whiter, blander version of Marley's original)
3.5
First listen
You know, I recognize Eric Clapton as one of the greats, and he influenced so many guitar players I respect. Layla is a crazy good song. But often when I listen to a whole album of his I fine myself wanting more. More speed, more fun, more creativity in his song craft. I get that's not his thing, and I'm now a product of my generation of music, but I keep looking for ways to enjoy his music and keep wishing for more
It's just ok. Nothing too special going on. 3.5 bumped down to 3.
Individually, I’d say the sum of these tracks would earn this album a 4. As a complete front to back experience, it is so dreadfully similar throughout I feel inclined to give this a 3. Eric Clapton is a gigantic asshole. We all know this. As I’ve said though, good music can be made by gigantic assholes, and this is, for the most part, good music. Unlike his efforts with Derek & The Dominoes, John Mayall, or Cream, though, this is… I mean, it’s just lacking in any fucking variety whatsoever, my god. I do like every track here, but we’re rating ALBUMS here, not individual tracks, and whoever on Eric Clapton’s team decided this album should entirely be slow, downtempo blues needs to be shot out of a fucking cannon. There’s no dazzling guitar solos to save his racist skin here, trading them out for lots of slower, stranger covers of little known blues songs (I mean, “Motherless Children” is just such a baffling topic to write a song about, you know?), and a few of his own compositions, some of which do try to boost the energy up a bit, but never really succeeding, except for *maybe* “Let It Grow”. I mean, I kinda just lost focus of the album after “Let It Grow”, with the final 2 tracks feeling nice, but with no fanfare or actual album structure behind them. “Mainline Florida” feels like it has its ending thrown into the middle of the track and then just sort of fizzles into a fadeout to close the entire album out, and it just feels like a microcosm of the entire album’s entirely too safe approach. In shuffle, all of these tracks would hit nicely, and I do think if you were to sum them up, this album would be at a 4 in isolation. As a total group though, it’s equivalent to having too much candy directly after trick-or-treating; how many times is a fucking KitKat bar going to feel satisfying after you’ve eaten 8 of them in a row? The longer this album goes, and the more tracks there are that follow the same downtempo formula with soft, unremarkable (yet totally fine) vocals from Eric, the less they feel satisfying, until you’re kinda just over it. Hence, a 3. I guess more of a 3.5 bumped down to a 3, but still. It’s not because Eric Clapton does bad here at all; I really do think all of these tracks are good, even with him naturally butchering part of the political message of “I Shot The Sheriff”. It’s just because the album is the same fucking thing for 39 minutes, even with every attempt to disguise that. I do wish it had some extra variety to maybe justify a super loose bump up to a 4, but it doesn’t earn one at all. It is the weakest thing we’ve gotten with Eric Clapton involved (though still good), and if we’re lucky, it’ll be the last. Maybe he’ll sneak in some guest appearance on another ‘70s album somewhere, but this is the final album we’ll get on the list with Eric Clapton as a member of a band or as the main artist. I do think he’s an asshole, but I do think he makes good music, and his place in that sense of the musical canon is decently established. I wouldn’t have given those other 3 albums a 5 if I didn’t like them. Overall, an 18/20 is pretty strong. Good job, asshole.
Decent record. Highs and lows. Some songs are great, some are a snoozefest. Not particularly impressed by the "I Shot the Sheriff" cover.
"Slowhand" is the better Eric Clapton solo album. That's the cocaine Clapton. This is heroin Clapton. LSD Clapton was the best. Now we're stuck with a Clapton that won't even take a vaccine.
Aiighhhyyyh
I thought about giving this a 4 but it's not that good. It is good though.
Nothing impressive and nothing awful on this project
Another one of those albums that slipped under my radar, maybe it was just a bit before my time, but it was a good one.
5/10 glaub ich
Give me Layla any day
There’s some great playing on this album, but I think I like his later stuff more.
2026.01.29.
My favorite song was the cover of I shot the Sheriff. His guitar goes wuoh wahuo wuhao. 6/10
low 3
Barely a 3 star album for me the opening songs lack the soul and feel of the source inspiration but he does close the album with content that feels more aligned with his talent.
I remember this album from my childhood, when it played on my father’s turntable in close rotation with “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac. High praise indeed. Listening to it now, I don’t see why, even thinking that Steely Dan does ya hit rock (there, I said it) better than Clapton. I guess my era of guitar rock has hit a nadir
I loved Clapton as a teen. Now his playing leaves me cold. It lacks emotion or feeling or something. Compare his playing to the intro of maggot brain and it almost seems like playing guitar by numbers. Some good songs but his ship has sailed for me.
Meh
Mehhhh. Inoffensive, boring blues-rock from a contrarily offensive, annoying person. Definitely wouldn't want to fall asleep to it again.
-this was about what i was expecting. maybe a little more enjoyable in some ways but just about the same -i can appreciate the pleasantness of the sound here, it makes me feel like a rich old white man going golfing at a country club. but few songs were particularly memorable or enticing to me -Favorites: Motherless Children, Steady Rollin’ Man
For a supposed "bluesman", the blues songs are the weakest part of this album.
Fav: Willie and the Hand Jive 3/5
More bluesy and dubby than I was expecting
Easy listening album but he’s still overrated.
nice enough
Ah, so this isn’t the same album as Hotel California
This is one of those albums where you have to give credit to everyone involved. There's no doubt Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitar players of the 20th century. 80% of the tracks are covers, but Clapton does a nice job of making it his own (although I may be one of the few that really dislike his Bob Marley cover). All the musicians and the producer of this album deserve the credit for making it what it is. "Let It Grow" is a very nice song, one of the heartfelt Clapton ballads that would continue to fill the airwaves for years to come. A very enjoyable collection of songs headlined by a morally gray man. 3.5 stars, rounded down.
i get it i get the hype i get the historic impact i know i know but i simply do not want to listen to it
I’m definitely going into this expecting some gnarly guitar and the first couple minutes have not disappointed. The first song, Motherless Children, really set a tone for me. I absolutely loved the drums that drove the song. It was fast, fun, and reminded me of some games I used to play when I was a kid. Not sure why. From there, it really mellows out for a while. Give me Strength and Willie and the Hand Jive were a completely different vibe from the first song. I liked the Groove of Get Ready, but honestly it’s left me itching for another upbeat song. I Shot the Sheriff is an absolute classic and I very much enjoyed listening to it again, even as a cover. The guitar solo in I can’t hold out was smooth and Please be With Me was gorgeous. The little guitar moments were lovely. I hate to do this, but Let it Grow made me audibly laugh as it reminded me of the Lorax. Steady Rolling Man was more of what I wanted out of this album! Similar to the first track, it marches along nicely. I really enjoyed the riff and the solo. I had similar feelings about Mainline Florida! It’s a great closer. Overall, I really wanted to love this album more than I did. There are some absolutely amazing standout songs, but the middle of this album really dragged for me. It’s going to get a 3/5 ⭐️ as the guitar, as expected, was a highlight, and a lot of the music was great! I just feel it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting and let me down a bit. Favourites: Motherless children, Steady Rolling Man, Mainline Florida Least Favourites: Give me Strength 9/1089
Quelques pistes vraiment sympa
Stoner country, good background music lol
The A side started off so strong with Motherless Children, I was ready to be wowed. There's 3 tracks written by Clapton, and a few more with his arrangements, which makes up about half the effort, and it's cool. It's just not really "wow". It's perfectly listenable. I'd rather listen to Disraeli Gears. 3.3
First thing that stands out to me is that this has a really subdued sound to it. I thought "Motherless Children" is quite out of place comparatively to the other songs. It has psychobilly-like lyrics, erratically-delivered vocals, leaves you scratching your head afterwards on what the hell just happened. The rest of the album is just 'meh' after that, until "Let It Grow", which was a pretty sweet song, but it dipped back into meh territory. Highlight Song/s: "Motherless Children" and "Let It Grow"
I think I just learned I’m not a huge Eric Clapton fan. The hits are solid. The rest is meh, for me.
I enjoyed the last half much more. Doesn't rly feel like anything special though tbh. I didn't feel touched. Very nice instrumentals!
Favorite songs: Motherless Children
Never been much of a Clapton fan. This one was alright, but nothing I'd go back to.
3.5 stars
Nice guitars, but bluesy keep nd of boring. Trea
Eipä ole slow handia tullut hirveästi kuunneltua
Decent
Have to laugh when Rolling Stone reappraises this with "returned from heroin addiction with a disc of mellow, springy grooves minus guitar histrionics," like it's a good thing. This is the transition from the "histrionic" awesome clapton shit like the wah solo on white room into adult contemporary shit like wonderful tonight and change the world that went on for decades and are probably a gateway drug for the racism (although this kinda seems overblown - one time cocaine fueled immigrant rants are obviously bad, but at least they are one time and not like a national policy or something else unthinkable) and antivax crybabying rather than vice versa.
Clapton is a guy that I recognize his skill and appreciate his ability but never feel much with his music. I much prefer his output with Cream to any of his solo work. There's a couple of songs here that I can dig, but for the most part, this ain't it for me.
It was alright. As others have suggested, Clapton is a prick, but given Cream are great I have it a go. I did really like the lazy guitar on I Can't Hold Out. But in line with what others have said... I Shot The Sheriff is a great demonstration of Clapton ripping off black artists. It basically adds nothing to the original and it's power. And yet apparently it did better in some markets. Ugh.
Not bad. More like Eric Clap-a little, politely. But not actually for Eric Clapton
A real mixed bag. Some white boy blues and some decent soft-rock. Would have given it a higher score, but the pointless cover of I Shot the Sherriff, complete with white boy reggae and awful fake-Jamaican accent, is atrocious.
It was fine. Didn't really need that I Shot the Sheriff cover. Overall didn't do a lot for me.
Great guitarist but pretty weak songs here. Many don’t showcase his guitar as much as you’d expect
I Shot The Sheriff // Please Be With Me //
Blues, cocaine, reggae and weed =
Big up and down. A few tracks I really liked but equally a number I probably wouldn’t bother listening to again.
The lad can play guitar and sure does like a wah pedal way too much. Nothing of note or interest here.
And hereth the list has decided to mark yet another sad step of Clapton turning from the great innovator to the great imitator. Mind you, post Cream Clapton and reggae mix, both of which I have very low opinion, on paper should be way worse than it actually is. So in a weird way this was a pleasant surprise. Which is confusing.
Hadn’t listened to it straight through before. Hard to put aside strong negative feelings about the artist. But, it’s an Infinitely listenable album. I’ll give it a a 3 but I want to give Clapton a negative 10.
This feels significantly less like an album you need to hear before you die and more like an album that has one really good song on it. Clapton really falls into that category where he has hits but he doesn’t have albums so we get served these pretty alright blues rock albums with one mega hit on them. One of the few cases where a greatest hits album might be a fair play for the list if it allows 3-4 other albums to make it.
NICE.ANCIENT WITH RITHM.
Whatever.
His hits are a worn out(I shot the sheriff, Layla, etc.). Enjoyed Motherless child and let it grow.
Pretty good album.
Beautiful guitar playing as Clapton always does. Good album but not life changing in any way.
Not much to say. Didn’t love or hate it.
A lot of a mixed emotion about Eric Clapton and this album. Undoubtedly, good musicianship and production. Wish he’d given more credit where credit is due.
Not so bad for lazy Clapton
This album is a tranquilizer dart for a certain breed of boomer and gen X dad. It's pretty goddamn boring. ;)
Better than expected. I thought it was going to be horrific lengthy guitar solos. Quite neat songs that I would have loved 30 years ago.
Appreciate the artist.
2.5/5. I like Clapton but this is pretty mid, 70s rock. There are a few good guitar licks though.
Blues rock still not my thing but not bad
7,5/10 innatendument bon
Favorite Track: Let It Grow
Hasn’t really left a big impression on me. Was vibing with one song, but overall pretty mid
Fairly middle of the road. Clapton is an amazing guitarist and none of that skill is on display here.
5/10
Easy listening just not very interesting aside from Motherless Children and I Shot the Sheriff.
I listened a few times and it didn't do quite enough to grab my attention
Eric Clapton loses a star because he's Eric Clapton Best Song: Let it Grow Rating: 5/10 Stars: 3
I can't ever really forgive Eric Clapton for Layla - one listen of it would have been enough, and yet we've all had to hear it thousands of times. However, I think this album chugged along ok.
Decent British electric blues album that has some blues influenced tunes as well. Only one song was familiar to me before listening to this album. Eric's playing as masterful as usual.
I feel like a lot of illegitimate children were conceived to this album
A nice, generally enjoyable mellow rock album, though I'd like an album of mostly-covers like this to really compel me with its sound, I got that most out of "Let It Grow", one of the few tracks written by Clapton, so that helped my opinion of the album shape more positively Overall I think my parents would appreciate this one more than I can, but it's a good album and a quaint listen for a peaceful morning
Pretty good, I like Clapton, but nothing groundbreaking or amazing or anything.
Mouef
A little too safe and white man MOR for my taste but ok for background if you’ve got some old fellas round for a poker night!
some of the upbeat songs were pretty good and “i shot the sheriff” is a classic jam, but the slower songs are pretty boring.
Don’t like this guy. Respect a lot of his older material, though.
Some songs were really catchy
Eh
It's all very middle of the road. It's not horrible, it's not great, it's just enough.
Great sound and some fun guitar work. Smooth, clean sound with a little experimentation between songs. Didn't know the Lorax's "Let It Grow" song originated from this. 7/10
This is a solid album. Glad he stopped doing heroin.
Este disco é irregular, trazendo pérolas como "Let It Grow" e "I Shot The Sheriff" e coisas bem fracas como "Willie and The Hand Jive" e "Get Ready". Disco mediano/satisfatório.
First impression: kicks off with a cracker! Superb energy to this. Very different mood on track 2. Not such a fan. Very generic. Track 3 picks up again, but nothing really special here. Track 4 passed me by. I didn't notice it. Track 5 (Sheriff) just doesn't appeal, no matter who's performing it. They seem to have found their stride again on track 6. Nothing amazing, but a good solid bluesy number. I like the mood of track 7. Dipping again on track 8. Clapton's own compositions are clearly the weakest here. Didn't notice the rest. Three stars because the few good tracks were really good.
#715. This is fine. There doesn't seem to be much to it, but its not terrible. 3/5: acceptable.
3/5
This album was just okay for me. I Shot the Sheriff is great of course. But the rest felt a little unmemorable on first listen. I have a feeling this is one that would grow on me over time though.
Surprisingly not bad, I do not like Clapton but this was surprisingly decent.
sexy upbeat rythm who makes anyone dance or vibe in their first listen, good length, perfect drums. Me gusta la voz. sunday mornings in miami (second song) that heavenly, almost humane instrumental. romantic. sexy, trouble (get ready). LOVE IT. kinda got distracted in the end but I like it. expected it to be shit, but it is eric clapton!
Not bad!
Pretty mediocre. A relaxing listen that has a time and place
Oh, those poor children. Good beats.
Leppoisaa blues rokkia. I Shot The Sheriff tietenkin klassikko, muut ei tuttuja. Parhaat: I Shot The Sheriff, Let It Grow
I kind of breezed through this album without bothering it too much with my full attention. It's alright I guess, musically on-point, but kind of boring with it. I take some issue with the sheer number of covers on here. 2.5 rounded up.
I will say EC will always have my respect for being one of the best guitar players to live (not better than Jimi) but this album did a good job at almost putting me to sleep. That soft and mellow vibe felt almost too much for me. I was also unaware at the many cover songs on here barring I Shot The Sheriff. It would be ingenuine to say that this was bad but it came kinda close. Top 3: I Shot The Sheriff, Please Be With Me, and Let It Grow No bad songs, lots of mid though. 2.75-3.25/5
clap clap
Golden Beach, Florida. 33160.
Favorite: I shot the sheriff
Hate that he’s gone off the rails.
This one was about 50/50 for me. I liked the more blues tinted stuff than the rest
I've always liked Eric Clapton's understated voice, so this was nice to listen to. Nothing crazy good but nice
I just don't think Eric Clapton lives up to the hype. He's a fine guitar player but no virtuoso and the mixing makes this sound like elevator music at times.
Some good stuff, but it doesn't show off his real talents.
461 Ocean Boulevard has good examples of what makes Clapton important -- the inspired guitar work, the bluesy, laid back ramblers, the maudlin ballads that are *just* earnest enough to be affecting -- but the some of it is just... kind of fine? Also, "I Shot the Sheriff" suffers from that same thing I didn't like about Paul Simon's Graceland. It hits all the beats of a Wailers song, but it's missing the essential quality that makes Bob Marley special. Maybe I'm just grumpy about the person he's become as he's aged, but I have never fully understood the hype, and spending another hour with him didn't move the needle for me. He's got the goods, but not enough soul to elevate it.
461 Ocean Boulevard – Eric Clapton (1974) | Blues Rock / Soft Rock | Avg: 6.39 | Favorite Song: “Let It Grow” 461 Ocean Boulevard is Clapton in cruise control—mellow, polished, and occasionally moving, but not exactly pushing any boundaries. “Let It Grow” is the clear emotional centerpiece here, offering a bit more depth and dynamic than most of what surrounds it. The rest of the album, though, is pretty middle-of-the-road. It’s clean, easy listening, and largely inoffensive, but from a reviewer’s perspective, that smoothness often reads as stagnation. There’s a sense that Clapton’s playing it safe, content to vibe rather than stretch. The blues influences are still there, but they’re softened—stripped of urgency and grit. That works fine for background listening, but when you sit with it critically, it starts to feel a little hollow. A few of the deeper cuts rise above the haze, but they’re not enough to elevate the album beyond “pleasant.” It’s competent, sure, and it has a couple strong moments, but it’s ultimately the kind of record that leaves little behind once it’s over.
I must begrudgingly admit, this was pretty good, and I say this as someone who has never particularly cared for the cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" The whole affair is a lot more buoyant and fun than you would expect from a recently-off-heroin sometime-bigot.
I shot the Sheriff is a banger, the rest of the songs were solid.
Good album, but it lacks spark.
Didn't even realise I actually liked Mr Clapton. One of those artists that I didn't realise did the songs he did.
I like blues, and Clapton is a master at it. Very good album.
Decent casual listening music
Well, we've been through this spiel enough times. Say it with me now: Fuck You Eric Clapton! For real, the "separating art from artist" discussions have been done to death. If you've been keeping track of my reviews, you'll know I'm not the type of person to just skip and album and immediately dismiss it just because the person behind it is a scummy human being. You'll also know by now that my opinions of the past 3 albums I've gotten involving Eric Clapton have all been positive. My opinion of the one album that is actually to his name is no different. 461 Ocean Boulevard is solid. It's not without its flaws, but it's solid. Of course, Clapton's musical talent largely lies in his skills as a guitarist, which are certainly there. He's one of the most acclaimed guitarists out there and I can see why. The dude knew how to play that thing well. There are other things that he's not as good at though, namely singing and songwriting. His singing is whatever. It's not bad, but not great either. He "can" sing, but it's not one of his strengths. Songwriting is also something he "can" do, but he doesn't do it a ton on this album. Much of the album is covers, including the album's most famous song, "I Shot The Sheriff." That cover is good, but I think I might like the original Bob Marley version more. The lyrics Clapton did write here are fine. Not bad either, but not too impressive. The album's weirdly quick, but that's not the worst thing in the world. Overall, Eric Clapton may be a racist anti-vax asshole, but he's a talented racist anti-vax asshole. However, his talents are not absolute, and are mostly focused on his admittedly very strong guitar skills. Still, 461 Ocean Boulevard is a good listen if you can separate art from artist, which I can for an album like this. High 3/5.
not really a eric clapton fan. this album was ok.
Not terribly impressed by this album. Nice is the best I can come up with. Happy to play as background music.

Cool album, interesting variety.
I don’t get the godlike status given to Eric Clapton. I have always been bored to tears by the hits. That includes Cocaine, his version of I Shot the Sheriff, Tears in Heaven (though I sympathize), and even Layla. Cream is a different story. Aaaand, ok, I can appreciate Bell Bottom Blues. This album only confirms to me that this is an artist who has great talent to service a band well, yet does not have a personal message or vision that moves me whatsoever. Some day someone will have to explain what I’m missing. Or not. I just don’t care… which is the whole problem I guess. 3/5 - neither objectionable nor captivating
I don't understand the career of Eric Clapton. Undoubtedly a brilliant guitarist, but after his string of groups in the 60's (and earning the title of "god"), I don't get the fascination. This album is a good listen, and the tracks are solid, but in the end it is unremarkable in the face of Clapton's vaunted reputation. I don't mind giving this a 3 out of 5, because most people will likely rate it better based on Layla, or some his classic Cream tracks. That's ok by me.
Let lyt. Pigerne kunne også lytte med. Intet specielt mindeværdig dog.
not bad, easy listen
Nice album, pleasant vibes
Clapton's a trash human these days and I've never really gotten the hype, but I approached this objectively. It's not terrible, but it's kind of bland. It's mostly cover songs with a laid back vibe. Clapton's singing is not great, very little passion or character. His guitar playing carries the album, and there are some occasional grooves throughout, but overall, nothing to write home about.
A decent listen, but not one of his best.
Loved the guitar of the opening Motherless Children, the rest was kind of bland for me. Instrumentation much better than the singing, as expected.
# 514 : 461 Ocean Boulevard We really should be judging it on the music, not who the guy is/was. That being said, this is very middle of the road. I don't love it, I don't hate it, it's ok and just enough with lots of flavorless ballads with some occasional decent blues. Favourite Track : Steady Rollin' Man Listened : 01/07/2025
Un blues rock muuuy chill que es en su mayoría covers menos Get Ready y Let It Grow (temazo) (also Lorax referencia). Give Me Strength y I Shot The Sheriff me gustan mucho tmb (esa última es bien groovy casi una onda reggae).
Funky guitar but not really my jam
Motherless Children I Shot the Sheriff Let It Grow
I Shot The Sherrif Let It Grow (similar chords to Stairway to Heaven)
not too into the slide guitar stuff, but the blues tunes are nice. Clapton definitely knows how to play the instrument.
Plays black music. Ends up being a racist twat. Decent music from an awful person.
after checking the reviews. do I have to rate the album or the political views of the artist? :^)
Eric Clapton's second studio album "461 Ocean Boulevard" contain so many guitar riffle while being influenced by a rock/country vibe in the whole EP. This body of work send you back in time in it's lyrics and instrumental, while Eric's voice sound like it's made for this time of sound
A few standouts including the first track and I Shot the Sherriff.
pues sinmas la vd
I mean I don't know if I clapped a TON but it wasn't bad (for me) IDK man I listened to it on fathers day maybe thats why I felt a soft spot for it, when they were talking about him waggling his meat in a gypsy's face or whatever I felt a little off but when he smooth crooning country boy mode I felt that little twang in my tummy man, low end of 3 for me but obvious step above fucking RUSH like come on man Fav song: Please Be With Me
I expected more, but it was enjoyable more not interesting to me. “Let It Grow” stood out.
3.5 stars. Blues rock with a lot of covers. Not my favorite Clapton but still decent. Leadoff "Motherless Children" cover is the best, more upbeat than the rest which is a bit more slow ballad-y.
Cool moments but mostly forgettable for me
I think I expected to like this more but it still was a great listen.
Not a big fan of blues rock, but this wasn’t bad.
Didn't really click... it has some high points, but if anything? Listening to this only proves that I don't need to listen to it again.
Man, between this guy and Bob Marley, there must not be many sheriffs left.
2.5/5.0: Mixed
i was disappointed by this album. its fine, but its certainly not as good as it could've been
Favorite Song: I Shot the Sheriff
So much talent in one shitty human being. Very literally the vampire Coogler envisioned. Oddly enough on the right side of Gaza. So, I guess word to Eric Clapton in a very limited sense. 7/10 Favorite Song: Willie and the Hand Jive
Solid album. Not great, but also not an earsore. Just pretty boring textwise. Good guitar riffs and general instrumental parts.
120/1089 - The more I listen to Clapton the more convinced I am that people like him because he has a cool name and nothing to do with the boring music. This album is well made and recorded however which evens it out somewhat.
Not his best album.
Another Clapton blues album…decent but always missing the soul. A couple of decent tracks
SHOCKINGLY mid
Very light blues. Possibly powder.
A laid-back, competent record that coasts more than it compels. Clapton’s playing is tasteful, but being a great musician doesn’t always make you a great songwriter. The covers and traditional arrangements are fine, but little here truly grabs you. Even the big hit “I Shot the Sheriff” feels more like a respectful studio rendition than a reinvention. It's a background listen, not a standout. And I might've been hoping a bit more for my penultimate album on this journey
Kind of annoying but much better than I expected. White British man rips off every genre. Rating: 3.5
It's OK. Not really my jam, but I can tell it's pretty good if you're into this sort of thing, which is bluesy soft rock.
I really like the vibe of this album, chilled out blues rock which is mostly strong from from start to finish. Would listen to again. 6.5/10
Lost a star because he's a piece of shit
5/10, not my style.
One woulda thought coke-fueled, Miami records would be a bit more energetic. All of this is fine, pleasingly and shufflingly mellow for the most part, but also vague and woozy and energy-poor – like should "Hand Jive" be so soporific? "Sheriff" and "Let It Grow" are the highlights. The vocals and the axe work feel phoned in (and on a landline, too with a long tangled cord, too). Really, wouldn't/shouldn't more have been expected from, you know, God? Whose grumpy-old-man politics, it must be said, are increasingly hard to ignore.
It's good, but not amazing. I like bluesy guitar, ergo I like Eric Clapton's music. But there's something a bit dull about some of it too. Maybe it's his voice, which is inoffensive but also not especially interesting. I think on a different day some of these songs might have hit better and bumped this to a 4, but in the words of Aragorn son of Arathorn, it is not this day. This day we rate 3 stars
nit schlecht aber ah nit memorable
I generally liked, but didn’t love this album. I wasn’t previously aware of his racist rant in 1976, but I have read about his regretting those remarks, and his actions later in life lead me to believe that his remorse was sincere. I doubt that he and BB King would have collaborated on an album if that were not so. Also, I know that I am not the same person I was 50, or even 10 years ago. Anyway, I am not going to penalize him for that rant. Having said all this, this is an okay album for me. I never liked I Shot the Sheriff, and with all apologies to Bob Marley, always thought this was a pretty stupid song…also a bad choice for Clapton to cover. I really liked Please Be with Me. In the end, this one is 3 stars for me.
From what I know of Clapton, I don't think this is his best work, or at least I'm not expecting it to be. Assuming that there will be other albums of his on this list. Which I'm looking forward to. Overall, I found this album lovely to listen to, it does have the kind of sound I can really get on board with. The Hand Jive song really took me by surprise, I gotta say! I think the first track was my favourite one, though.
I love Eric Clapton but this is not my favorite album of his. I always found "I Shot the Sheriff" to be especially annoying. All of the albums I have of his (many) are after this one chronologically.
Definitely my first Eric Clapton album though I recognised some songs here and I'm sure I know more. It was as adequate as I was expecting, not dull, quite well put together but very safe. Ticked along well enough for one listen but think repeated plays would start to grate. Last song was nice, sure there were others but nothing better than nice.
Not really going to say much about Clapton other than in my opinion he's simultaneously over rated and over hated. Quite frankly, my favorite songs were his penned "Give Me Strength" and "Get Ready" (w/ Yvonne Elliman) 'Let it Flow" along with George Terry's "Mainline Florida" The rest is fine but nbd, except for the fact I can't stand his cover of "I Shot the Sherrif", whenever I hear it I want to shoot the radio.
Some great tracks, and some mote forgettable ones. Don't like Clapton as a front man. 3.5 stars
Not bad. Nothing much stood out though.
Can't say it wasn't influential. This album is the type of blues middle aged men for the coming half a century would all be playing. I can't really decide on whether I like it or not. On one hand it sounds incredibly dull and boring and far below Eric Claptons capabilities. On the other hand, some of the songs are pretty pleasant to listen, such as Let It Grow and Motherless Children. Ends up somewhere in the middle.
I don't have a great feel on this one- my playback volume started super low and had inconsistent levels as I tried to listen, which caused me to have to adjust it multiple times. It was distracting and took me out of the best mindset to evaluate the album. That said, what I was able to hear clearly didn't really make me want to go back and re-listen to what I missed. Nothing was bad, necessarily, but it also didn't appeal to me all that much. I think it's another one that I just found somewhat boring. Overall: 2.75/5
This was enjoyable, but the best songs on here are covers, and while they’re good covers, they’re not better than the originals.
I think I listened to this! Simpsons: Yes
Mostly pretty standard blues. Nothing too interesting or too boring.
beautiful blues rock. you can tell it's from eric clapton as soon as the guitar started to play. he's just that iconic.
Great guitar work but otherwise it’s mid
2.7 Better than all other Clapton albums, but that's not saying much. Felt bit like a Zeppelin rip off, which I know means it's a blues rip off, but still. Saved down a couple of tracks but don't think I'll be revisiting the rest.
Eric Clapton FTW!!!
This album was pretty middle of the road. I enjoy Clapton but this was nothing special. Let it grow is my favorite track here.
What you’d expect out of old clapton
Never been the biggest Clapton fan but the talent is undeniable. This isn’t his most engaging album imo, doesn’t help that he’s a huge jerk. But not bad.
I've never met Eric Clapton but I believe everything that I've read about him. Just kidding, I haven't read much about him because I don't really like his music that much. I agree with Lumpkins, he's over rated. At best, it's mediocre. A few of these songs have their moments... Steady Rolling Man has a pretty good guitar solo. Mainline Florida has a decent groove. But the best song on here is Bob Marley's cover (prefer the original). Yes that is interesting and sort of ironic that Clapton helped boost Marley's career, intentionally or not (thanks Loretta).
Eric Clapton has a signature guitar sound that is pretty cool and generally laid back, but he also gives off an air of douchiness in being considered one of the best guitar players of all time by big corporate media, which to me, he is not. There are so many other guitar players, even a plethora of unknowns, who are better than Eric. I guess overrated is the best term to describe him. This album is nice for a chill day on the patio but it wouldn’t be my go-to for that vibe.
Ah, another 'separate the art from the artist' kinda day. Not a fan of the human, but this was a solid album. Also glad that his I Shot the Sheriff cover helped Bob Marley gain the international recognition he absolutely deserved. Love me some Marley! The Hand Jive cover on this was pretty interesting too. Let it Grow was my favorite 'new to me' song.
Still can’t forgive him for that awful cover.
Meh
Oh wow, another white guy discovers reggae! At least it’s smooth. The whole thing feels like it’s been left in the sun just long enough to get warm. Like, the blues are still in there, but they've been sanded down, tanned, and given a hammock. It’s not terrible. Just don’t expect it to break a sweat. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - I Shot The Sheriff - Please Be With Me - Let It Grow
It’s good. Not great.
Fine listen. For people rating this poorly because they think Eric Clapton is a bad person, I hope they are consistent. A large number of artists on this list are/were shitty people.
Really enjoyed the bluesy tracks over the slower ones but good overall. Favourite tracks: Get Ready, I Can't Hold Out & Steady Rollin' Man Will probably revisit. 3/5
Yeah I don't know it was fine
Good stuff
I do not enjoy this man’s work. Let’s see how this goes. The most I’ve ever enjoyed Clapton. It’s not authentic or offensive but very listenable.
I like Let it Grow.
Bam, gentle shredding Then softly lulls others’ work Soothing yet lacking
Yep. That's Clapton
I consider myself a Clapton fan, but I wasn’t so familiar with this collection aside from the Sheriff song. It wasn’t bad, but not at all my favourite Clapton album.
I miss Cream, Bruce and Baker were fundamental.
Probably wasn't as boring as the other Eric Clapton album I heard earlier, but I still don't have a whole lot to say outside of a couple of songs being pretty good. Probably a 6, maybe a 7
Wasn't excited for this but was pleasantly surprised
Was expecting the worst, but on this occasion my preconceptions were unfounded. I really enjoyed this. Soft bluesy easy going loveliness. Only knew the one (obvious) song from it, but it all flowed nicely. Not sure I’ll make a point of listening to it again, but I’m glad I have!
I don’t have anything bad to say about this album but that’s only because I’m struggling to say ANYTHING about this album.
Good sound but would have liked original music instead of covers
Here he is, boring Eric. I dunno what it is about Clappers, but I can't really get on board with him whatsoever. The two best songs on this album are a racially highly questionable rendition of I Shot The Sheriff and a cover of a classic blues song. It's all very serviceable and there's no denying he's a very talented musician, but it's like music by AI or something, there's no soul to it whatsoever.
Better than expected! His voice sounds pretty good here too. Solid cover of I Shot The Sheriff. 3.5
Boomer rock but it’s consistent
Like the guitar and some of the vocals. Great example of the genre. Added at least one song to the library.
Classic Clapton.
If you are into that 70 rock this is for you. It's exactly what you think an Eric Clapton album is going to sound like. So if thata the vibe you want, this is a great choice.
Helt greit. Let it grow kanskje beste sangen.
Quite good.
I wonder if hearing this music live would make a difference. I’m listening to it feeling like the energy that l should be hearing just isn’t being captured. The last song, Mainline Florida, gets cranking. Would have liked more of that side of Clapton. Much of the rest is too bland. Also, I’m aware that Clapton is an asshole, but am going to just judge the music on here.
The sheer artistry is absolutely undeniable, of course. But with only a couple of exceptions ("I Shot the Sheriff", "Let It Grow"), there's a lack of energy that I don't remember from when I listened to this album many years ago. The album hasn't changed, obviously, so it must be me.
A Clapton classic for sure, but here's the thing about Clapton classics—once you've heard one, you've kind of heard them all, haven't you? Look, I'm the last person who would speak ill of one of the all time great guitarists, but the truth is, I never understood the comparison to almighty God. He's...great (as a musician; please don't cancel me). But when it comes to the Clapton solo material, I'm always left asking, "Where's the chops?" Especially on 461, Clapton seems purposefully reserved on every track. That's not inherently a bad thing, I just know how good he can pull out the dirty blues tones and truly make his instrument sing. I will say, the one track I respect a whole lot here is I Can't Hold Out, and it's precisely because of the reservation. The hushed vocal delivery, followed by the little-engine-that-could slide guitar pushing its way through the music really works for me.
There's a house on Ocean Boulevard, where Eric kicked the smack to play tunes in his yard.
Love him or hate him Eric Clapton most definitely warrants inclusion on the list. His guitar playing is great and some of these songs are pretty good. The Bob Marley cover is not as good as the original. Favorites were Motherless Children, I Shot The Sheriff, I Can’t Hold Out, and Let It Grow.
This was fine-to-good. There's probably a world where I'd move this up to a 4 after a few more listens, but we don't live in that world. 3.2
Good, not great.
Good album, but there are a lot better in the genre and think this mostly got on the list due to the name rather than the content itself. The cover of I shot the sheriff is pretty bad
Fine, this is fine. And I love Clapton.
Past the title of the last song and the cover, this seems to be a themeless album and collection of ‘play-the-gee-tar-and-sing-about-vague-topics’ albums, from a bloke born in Surrey. Clapton doesn’t do much to demonstrate his spot on ‘top guitarists of all time’ lists, save for some cool sliding bits in the first track and sprinkled conservatively throughout. Not very adventurous and quite mundane, with the slight impression of Jamaican music in the most popular track somewhat contradicted by his own willingness to “keep Britain white” in a speech two years later. But, separate art from artist, etc.
clapton has some good albums, even though i think he’s insanely overrated as a guitarist. this is Not one of those albums. not really all that interesting imo
Great sounding record pretty and the groovy 70’s blues rock vibes are cool but no really great songs except for the Bob Marley cover. Ratings get tough. 3-4? 3.5 I liked this more than the yardbirds. Did I like dexys midnight runners better? Or rod Stewart idk. Pretty good but not great compared to some of his other albums.
Instruments all sound great but the songs are mid. I didn’t like any of the originals very much but the covers were ok. I kind of like the laid back vibe he goes for, JJ cale-esque but nowhere near as vibey. Side B really sucks and brings this down to a 2.5 for me
Nice but short
Ako bih morala izdvojiti jednu stvar, vjerojatno bih rekla da mi je I Can't Hold Out okej pjesma. Let it Grow mi je kombinacija kopija Tears in Heaven + Stairway to Heaven. 😂 Neka sredina, ni vrit ni mimo. 3/5, 5/10
Dobri stari slowhand Clapton.
I zbilja me nista ne rajca ovdje, a to mi nije bas najbolja stvar u muzici.
Really used to like this album, but I was underwhelmed by the recent listen. Vocals are weak but the guy was a heroin addict so no surprise there. ISTS was a disappointment after so many radio listens. Too bad the original couldn’t have been appreciated on its own merits - much better!
Given the weird obsession in this project with multiple albums by various artists that probably don't deserve so many, I am utterly floored by the fact that this is the only solo Eric Clapton album. And while I feel like rewarding this possible oversight with 4 stars, in part because it's a solid album showcasing Eric Clapton's adopted sound, and of course his ever-popular cover of "I shot the sheriff", I now realize that we get other Eric Clapton solo efforts under Derek and the Dominoes ("Layla"), which really was all we needed and is really a stronger album than this one, which reminds me more of James Taylor than anything else. And too bad that "Let it grow" really *does* have a "Stairway to heaven" vibe (lite). So three it is!
I'd never heard this album before though I've heard some Clapton and saw him live once. Still, wouldn't say I'm a big Clapton fan, but when this album started with "Motherless Children" I got pretty psyched--what a great tune. Sadly, the rest of the album didn't quite live up to the somehow laid-back yet extremely tight blues rock of the first track, though it wasn't awful.
A good album, I liked Get Ready, I Shot the Sheriff and Let it Grow.
Blues rock is not my favourite to listen to and much of this was pleasant but did not leave much of an impression. Let it Grow was an excellent song though.
meh
3 - I'm finding Clapton just really boring and soulless. He is an amazing guitarist, but something's missing
Fine Fave Tracks: I Shot the Sheriff, Mainline Florida 3.4/5
Blind album, know the artist and the hit cover from the album. It was made very well, and had some catchy parts. Wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it though and it wasn't memorable.
Yeah it's fine
