I listened to this twice - once on my commute to work, and once back. I liked it better the first time (maybe I was in a worse mood because I was going to work as opposed to leaving, who knows?) I appreciate what it is and they're certainly talented, but I prefer my music to be a little more melodic

Although I like the sound, I cannot hear the breakthrough in the overall performance. 2.5/5.

I will admit it I have zero idea what makes an album good in the sense that you have to listen to it in your lifetime. I have favorite songs, albums, and artists but after all these years of privately enjoying music, I can't explain to anyone in an explicit or genuine way what makes an album great. I listen to most albums because i consider them cool and i want to be part of the crowd that enjoys "good music." I have several Fugazi's albums saved in apple music for a long time, and perhaps listened through them a couple times as well. However, I can't get into most of their stuff. I can't hear what's good about albums like this anymore. I appreciate it not being formulaic or repetitive like contemporary pop songs but what separates this album from the previous ones that i have reviewed? i don't know. I am genuinely lost and i wasn't expecting this project triggers yet another existential crisis in myself.

Lots of interesting musicality interacting through Hard Rock. Didn't listen as intently as desired, but certainly a good and important album for what it is

The good parts are good: The band is clearly at play and mixing skill onto the recording. However, the thesis falls just too flat. Neither obscure nor illuminating, there's truth to the advice to listen to Repeater in specific times and places. Now, at relative rest, seems like a subpar choice.

Prima punk

What a strong memory on nearly every song. It‘s raw but has a slight pop appeal. The drums are super intensifing the whole structure. In the long run it feels a bit too long for these 42 minutes. 3.4

color me impressed! upon my listen, it was easy to hear similarities with nirvana and rage against the machine. it's a shame fugazi isn't as well known as those bands, considering they laid the stepping stones. i hear some more punk in this album than i typically do for alternative rock in the nineties. fugazi's repeater didn't blow me out of the water as something i'd listen to again, but i appreciated it. to include something specific and positive on this album: fugazi didn't waste a lot of time writing lyrics! that isn't necessarily a bad thing--we all can't be taylor swift. but some of it i enjoyed. the "every slip's not a slide" line from "reprovisional" was particularly poignant.

This album came as somewhat of a surprise, musically. The genre here is "post-hardcore", and what I'm interpreting that as in this case is this movement from the very eclectic, heavy punk scene into a more melodic alternative and/or grunge rock sound. This album definitely exists somewhere in that in-between transitional space, neither quite one or the other. This album is another example of a breeding ground and jumping off point for the evolution of music. Unlike other "proto" type genre albums on this project where the album's presence seems to be based more on its contribution to music history and based less on its actual enjoyability, this album actually shines in both areas. As indicated above, it creates something unique and presents a good mix of two different musical worlds. And while this album no doubt fed into the alt/grunge 90s scene, this particular sound mix even seems to provide somewhat of a blueprint for the 2000s emo/screamo movement. No doubt a lot of bands have been influenced by this album in one way or another. While I wouldn't say any specific songs stood out here, I definitely found myself enjoying this album as a whole, both for its influence and its sound!

I love how playful this is. There are moments when they rock out like a hardcore band and moments that sound more like artsy post-punk. The songs move and change enough that you can’t easily nail down the style. They’re a restless band. There’s some excellent musicianship throughout. “Brendan #1” in particular is gorgeous.

Very energetic with some really interesting chords that push the expectations of raw punk rock but unfortunately the vocals didn't really do much for me. I know Fugazi is an influential band and I haven't listened to them much and re-listening now I'm coming to the conclusion that it's the vocals that always pushed me away. It's a 2/5 for me.

Good fucking record. Wish I found it when I was 10 in the early 90's. Can hear their obvious influence on countless modern and early aughts bands.

It's difficult to pin this down since, over 30 years later, "post hardcore" means something else entirely. Think this record does a great job of bringing fresh ideas to the table, and has wonderful dynamic and rhythm play. "Greed" has some excellent uses of this. There's a lot of intensity, but it's not all rage, rage. It's there, below the surface, slowly boiling over. Favorite tracks: "Repeater", "Styrofoam", "Merchandise"

This album should get 10 stars!

Hilariously, I had to listen to this on repeat before I came to appreciate it.

Sure it's uncompromising, but also insistently ugly and non-melodic. It's as if Fugazi doesn't want many people to like or enjoy their outputs, in which case they've succeeded gloriously, despite a few well-wrought riffs and moods. What might have been with some variance in the textures and some competent vocals. One understands they were great live; one knows intuitively that it would have been difficult to tell the songs apart or withstand the assault for very long.

It's definitely a good album and Fugazi sure knows how to play their instruments. It's not really my type of rock and I couldn't really get into the album even though I understand why people like it.

I want to like this. But nothing stands out. It's a good album. But not a great album. I give plus 1 star though (maybe unfairly) simply because I adore Fugazi's work ethic and view on Capitalism.

Man, back in the day, I knew some dudes (it was always dudes) who were super into Fugazi. Like... REALLY into these guys. I never understood the appeal. They're kind of a mess. Clearly a bunch of talented musicians, for sure. But the music they made is mostly just a mess. None of these tracks are terrible but every track comes up short. I mean, I like it more now than I did back then but that's not really saying much about the band and more about my increased tolerance for nonsense, I think. Anyway, I'll give it middling marks for putting out something vaguely interesting and then move on to more engaging albums.

An angry and raw record that preceded the big grunge classics that followed later in the early 1990s.

I love Repeater and guaranteed every time I listen to a Fugazi record I think, “dang the bass and drums sound so goooood!”

Most excellent pre-grunge. The rhythm section sounds amazing. Not usually my style but I saved a couple - Sieve-Fisted Find and Joe #1.

Listened to it 3 times round! Feel like studio time is slightly wasted on these guys as sounds like a garage and a 4 track, but think overall it’s better for it.

Repeater is the debut album by the American post-hardcore band Fugazi. It is considered the definitive album from Fugazi. It didn't perform well commercially at release, but after many months of the band touring the album sales began to increase. This was an influential album to many alternative rock bands that would appear later in the 90's. I liked this album just a little, but would recommend it to fans of alternative rock.

This was just boring? No songs stood out and didn't find the singing or music particularly engaging. Just all sounds the same. 5/10.

Before today, I'd only heard of Fugazi, but had never listened to them before. The way I heard of them was actually through another album I've already reviewed on this generator. That album was Out of Step by Minor Threat. The singer from that band, Ian MacKaye, is also the singer for this band. I loved that album, it was awesome punk, and this album is post hardcore punk. Ian never wanted to be part of a band who could ever be accused of selling out, so when Minor Threat made it to the mainstream, he left the band for another, eventually creating Fugazi. This wasn't as strong as his Minor Threat stuff, I found. Maybe I'm just not as much a fan of post hardcore punk? Whatever the reason, this just didn't resonate with me the way the Minor Threat album did. This album is full of distorted guitars, machine gun drums, and screaming lyrics. I can hear how the Offspring drew influence from songs such as Merchandise. Overall, not bad, but not great. Just average. I kind of couldn't keep focused on this album today. One song would blend into the next. Good music that was absolutely influential, but I doubt I will revisit. Favourite songs: Merchandise, Song 1, Shut The Door, Blueprint, Reprovisional Least favourite songs: Break-In, Two Beats Off 3/5

Standouts: Repeater Other: Merchandise, Greed. I’ve heard this album before. The only song that I remembered was ‘Repeater’. Everything else was like hearing it for the first time. You can tell they are talented. I think that the songs would be better if sung by someone with a unique and stand-out voice. The vocals just seemed like any number of bar-bands playing the hits of other artists. I think this album is on the list because musically (not vocally) the album does seem to be ahead of its time and was probably an influence on later artists. It is barely above average. 3/5

Particularly like the track where he sings about Ribena. Feel like it doesn’t get sung about enough. Jokes aside this is the highlight of the album and comes quite early. I think I prefer Fugazi as a best of artist, there albums tend to drone through between highlights I like Fugazi. Good tracks on here but none of my faves really. Would listen again.

Fun, high energy, rocky, really enjoyed on a first listen and will likely come back to them. Some would say this album may be a Repeater. Haha!

I picked this CD up in a record shop back in 2021 or so because I thought it was rare. I was wrong, but I was also left with my introduction to the amazing band, Fugazi. This is classic DC Punk, and in my opinion you’re hard pressed to find a better band from DC than Fugazi. Ian MacKaye also founded Dischord Records which was pretty cool too. 4/5.

I think this music may be technically interesting in the sense that it is unusual or difficult to play. It also seems to have elements that are similar to The Bronx and The Clash, which are bands I like, and also The Offspring. It's certainly got energy. However, I just don't like it. Pretty good if you're in the mood for something that is an island in between the 80s and 90s.

To be honest not my favorite. Sometimes even abrasive and difficult, but sometimes the individual instrumental work is really impressive. But the the song explodes into a hardcore mess and it’s not good anymore. 4/10

fugazi sets the high watermark for early hardcore punk. this is NOT a blind spot for me, as i very much enjoy this band's bass-heavy and exciting songwriting. a lot of punk bands put the bassist in the corner, but not fugazi they're inventive, lyrically clever, loud, and unabashed. this album came out in 1990! so influential, so cool, overall very fun and interesting stuff. love love love this band and so many bands they influenced

OK, Punk. Pas mon style, que veux-tu…

Was surprised by this one as the term post-hardcore waved a few red flags. But once I actually gave it a listen, it subverted my expectations. It's an enjoyable experience that flows well, especially the first three songs which feel blended together. There were times where I lost interest which mainly occurred in the second half and the 3 Songs EP, but aside from that it's an album I can see listening to again in the near future. I liked Turnover, Shut the Door and Merchandise the most out of the bunch. One of the few albums I've listened to where I prefer the bass and drums to the guitars and vocals. The grooves were really interesting and made what would have been your average punk/grunge album just a bit more special. The guitars and vocals itself were fine, just more serviceable and didn't stand out as much. Did like how there were two vocalists which provided that extra variety. I knew one of them sounded familiar once I found out they were in Minor Threat, whose album was a bit too fast and thrashy to listen repeatedly, but was a lot of fun. It made me want to listen to Out Of Step again.

Not my era and not my style so lower points in general. However, in my opinion there weren't many stand out tracks in general here.

I didn't enjoy this, but I did appreciate that it predated a lot of similar-sounding ‘90s alternative. But give me a good Strauss waltz over this any day.

After the double hit of my second shingles shot and flu shot yesterday, I really needed a warm fuzzy blanket of sound to cuddle up with. This was NOT that for me. I was able to make out the quality of "its complex interplay of guitar and rhythm section" for which it is noted according to the Wikipedia article. I can appreciate the effort here, but it didn't make me feel any better...

I enjoyed the driving bass intros on a few of these. There's a lot about this album that brings Jane's Addiction to mind --- the vocals in Song #1 in particular and the guitars in Brendan #1. I found a lot to like.

I liked this ok… listened to it a couple of times today. I still kind of scratch my head about this being “a landmark of rock music.” Maybe it would have felt more that way had I listened to this in 1990. Listening to it today I thought it was fine.

Pretty cool punk band.

It’s funny how a slight change in the ratio of ingredients can throw off a recipe for one person or perfect it for another. To me this has so much good stuff, really the whole instrumental core of grunge. If you stirred in some melody and some lyrical subtlety it would be all good. And then add a dash of rage for spice and it’s perfect. Instead we got no melody, all rage. I’ve always found that kind of punk/hardcore vocals a little dull but also whiny—impotent really. The lyrics here are not too bad but when coupled with that vocal style, they just make my goodwill and patience evaporate. At the first sign of pretension, I’m out. I’m sure there are lots of people who love this record because it’s giving them a double helping of what they like best. But to me it’s just unbalanced. I was absolutely the perfect age for this record when it came out, but I had no interest in it then; and I think honestly if I had sat down and listened to the whole record as a teenager I’d have had the same reaction as today.

Drôle d'album. On n'a pas l'impression d'une session d'enregistrement, mais d'un collage de différents enregistrements. Peut-être que mes attentes était trop haute puisque j'adore l'album 13 Songs, compilation des 2 premiers EP du groupe. Il y quand même de bons riffs. Merchandise, la fin de Blueprint et Sieve-Fisted Find en sont de bons exemples. Dans la veine de Gang of Four, avec Fugazi, on s'en va vers des bands comme At The Drive-In et Rage Against The Machine (Il faut écouter la basse sur Joe #1).

Noisy, Raw, Political, Hardcore, Energetic, Punk, Distorted

Short, fast, kicking ass.

Fugazi have been a big uncomfortable hole in my musical palette - I know they're feted and have influenced dozens of bands I'm super in to, but I never set out to give them a listen and make their acquaintance. Hurrah for this project, I guess! To no-one's surprise, I loved this. A great and varied listen, with numerous little moments that made me stop and pay attention. I actually gave this 4 listens before rating it as each time it felt like it reward more attention, and it did indeed! Fave track - that's a tough one - "Merchandise", "Blueprint", "Two Beats Off" all caught me attention. "Reprovisional", though..... yeah, let's say "Reprovisional"!

Finally an album I love. Fugazi rock and I'll be listening to this forever.

I think I have other favorite Fugazi albums, but this one is good as well. It's driving and intense, just as Fugazi always was.

Least fav - Merchandise - Guitar was less creative on this song than on other ones - Chorus was good but the whole song is a bit repetitive 3.5? 4? depends on my mood

Solid punk album

Fugazi is kind of hit or miss for me. I've just never spent much time listening to them. This album is fine and all, but I'd probably never seek it out on purpose to give it another listen.

I was not impressed with any part of this album. The vocals were weak, the lyrics basic, and the mixing of the voice/music in many of the songs made it sound amateurish

Nah, not for me. I'm a fan of post-hardcode but the more modern take on the genre. I can appreciate what was needed to get where we are but I don't need to listen to this again.

More grungy sounding than I prefer. It was okay to listen to in the background but I certainly won't be coming back to any of this album.

Really glad I had a chance to listen to this band for the first time via 1001. In the hardcore/punk world, I'm more into the post-hardcore vibe and this album fits very well into it. The vocals are violent, raw and emotive and the guitar parts are perfect to support this. I'll come back to this album again and maybe I would give it 5 stars in the futur?

I’m st least a little surprised and disappointed that I'd never heard Fugazi before now. I enjoyed the fast pace of these songs and the passion in the vocals. These guys sound both intelligent and passionate, if maybe a little cynical. I guess that’s a good recipe for becoming a punk musician. I’m definitely listening to this album more frequently, and will check out more of their albums and side projects. Very cool band.

I liked this album, but I think that is because it is the exact kind of music that I am passionate about, but I don't consider it so different from any other thing that I have listened to before. Apparently (according to Wikipedia), they were very influential in the early 90s, but it does not sound atemporal to me. Going deep on the band's Wikipedia page, I must say that their posture in the music business is admirable but considering only this "Repeater" album, I rate it three stars.

This album did a lot of things I liked but still sucked

This is a gateway record to hardcore music. Alongside the Pixies, their chaotic and rough sound heavily influenced grunge, and thus all rock to come thereafter. The album is called "Repeater" in reference to how the songs feel like a time loop. These multi-layered complex snippets of music are copy-and-pasted over and over with slight alterations. This can bother many listeners, but to me it's rich and aesthetically pleasing, and never drilled in to be annoying. In fact, it perfectly matches the spirit of punk, doing whatever they want, and ironically making them unpredictable, as you don't know where they'll take the music. Good examples of this include the uncomfortable guitar chord in "Blueprint" that goes on for like 10 seconds in the middle. Great track order and smooth transitions. The first tracks are so well put together that it sounds like a medley. And for most other tracks, one ends abruptly straight into the action of the next. No bullshit. Loved the whole album, although loses a bit of momentum following "Greed". But the closer "Shut the Door" is my favorite track, and I enjoy the additional 3 songs (although probably better left out).

Minor Threat rules but Fugazi really kicks ass Despite Ian being a super annoying straight edge punk that basically invited that "holier than thou" attitude the album is super solid. I prefer 13 songs but these vocals still have that aggressive / raw feel while somehow sounding super polished. . . a beautiful in-between black flag and wire! I've really enjoyed rediscovering these punk albums I fell in love with in college. Fugazi is a top 3 punk band of all time for me. Standout Tracks: Blueprint

Of all the angry punk rock albums I've had to listen to on this site so far, this was the most tolerable by far. I will never be a fan of this style of raw and screechy vocals, but they weren't quite as grating as with many other similar sounding vocalists. There was also a lot more going on instrumentally than what I've heard from similar bands. I will still likely never come back to this album, because its just not a genre that I resonate with, but at least it wasn't a painful experience like what I've had with other punk bands from this era. Rough, discordant and assertively ugly. This can feel like musical nihilism, but then certain riffs seem to have a point (or want to reach one) – see “Brendan #1” and “Shut the Door.” One doesn’t mind the shadowy elements or overall toughness – see “Blueprint” and the guitar work on “Reprovisional,” though the latter is ruined by the vocals. In fact, across the record, the singing … well, it isn’t really singing, is it? “Song #1” sounds like a bad (and much older) Beastie Boys cover band. As with some abstract expressionism, one feels the artist is deliberately trying to offend (or at least startle). In that sense, it’s job done, but at the cost of ensuring one will not be inclined to seek this out ever again. Fans will feel themselves special for withstanding the assault. The band is basically choosing its fans by asking “who can stand to listen to this?” One feels the record deserves a severe rounding down as it might have been vastly more interesting (and not just prettier or more pleasant).

Love fugazi

There a fewer bands who truly mattered to its fans more than this one. And it’s easy to see why on the strength of this album. The guitar work is enthralling and surprising. The song structures always catch you off guard without sacrificing a hook or melody, though there are some which leave more of an impression than others. In fact, there are few album openers as fraught with tension and engagement as “Turnover”. Another favourite of mine is “Merchandise” which gives Ian Mackaye the necessary soap box to berate and animate you into action. The comparisons to GoF’s Solid Gold are justified to an extent, but it’s clear that Fugazi’s pop sensibility was a lot less pronounced than their English predecessors. Nevertheless, it is there and it’s to the overall benefit of the album’s flow. I was in-between 4 and 5 stars for this one but I’m going to go with the maximum rating in the end for what this band stood for - a musical and social revolution.

I like this better than most of the Minor Threat stuff. The whole band writing the songs together seemed to work well.

I tried on this one but it really wasn't hitting me until I got to Shut The Door, you know, the last song on the album...that one I really liked and added to a playlist earning it the 2 stars for me.

Not crazy about the vocals but the are exactly what they are meant to be. The music sans vocals is awesome.

From what I've read Fugazi seem like an interesting and influential band so I'm not writing them off, but nothing on this album struck me as essential listening. I liked plenty of bits of it but there wasn't a track I really loved. 2.5 stars.

Never herd of this band… The album opens with turnover and my god I love how this song builds up it’s just epic. The chorus is really tense sounding making a nearly dramatic feel. Love this shit already! It flows perfectly into the album’s title track it’s a great display of the drum and bass skills of these artists the singing is a bit too fuzzy for me but it works really well when it goes spoken word. Then it kicks off the instrumental song Brendan 1 and yeah it’s awesome for an instrumental and just the right length. But where’s Brendan 2? Merchandise shows a punkier side of the band amazing instrumentals and sloppy but solid vocals just works great you know. Blueprint can be repetitive at moments but it’s still an amazingly written epic sounding song that should be at this position on the album really good It doesn’t look like this album had singles but this should’ve been one! I love the way sieve-fisted find builds up this song is darker sounding and heavier in an already heavy album it’s just wonderful and hard to fault. Greed is a short little thing with only a few lines just blurted out, not my favourite but I love when heavier albums have songs where they can just scream. ( If you like this see also six shooter by queens of the stone age). The album goes slightly more mellow with two beats off, this it still explodes a ton but the verses are done with little distortion which works as a good contradiction to the rest of the album! The rapid guitars in the mental track styrofoam are amazing; it’s a true screamer, dirty but with an awesome edge to it that other bands really lack. The penultimate track off the album reprovisional tricks the listener into thinking it will be slow and mellow but it reveals itself to be this sludgy and heavy mix of sounds. It’s probably the worst one out of the tracks that aren’t really short or instrumentals but it’s still loveable. The album shuts the door with shut the door this is definitely the most mellow of the songs but it still has everything that a listener would want from this band really cool. It might not be everyone’s cup of yea but I found it near impossible to find fault with this. It’s the kinda album I would wanna make if I knew what I was doing. Mental but with swagger!

The grunge album I never knew existed. Turns out, for a good reason. It's a bit of a shouty-shouty album and, more importantly, through that "all songs sound the same" factor, I found it rather boring.

A pretty interesting and complex album. I enjoyed listening to it a few times but I don’t think I’ll ever seek it out. The instrumentals are solid and rocks pretty nicely. The lyrics and singer are what I find difficult to relisten to this. It’s definitely not bad but not good enough for me to really enjoy. 5.5/10

Musically I enjoy this album, vocally not so much. The bass work is amazing on this album and the way it fits in the groove with the drums is magical. And the guitar work is fairly intricate and fun for a garage/hardcore band. It just is not a repeat listen album for me. Based off the vocals alone I would give it a 2, but the music and legacy of the album inclines me to bump it to a 3. I was pleasantly surprised with the music.

One of the best post-hardcore releases that still feels true to its punk orgins. Favourites: "Repeater", "Blueprint", "Shut The Door"

It reminds me of stuff I listened to in the early 00's that must have been influenced by this (bands like Fuel), but this is better. Can also hear how a band like say, Tool, might have heard this and been influenced. I really feel like they nailed down a sound that would be hard to improve upon by subsequent bands that might be using it as a precedent. Maybe this is a 4-star album for me, but as I'm revisiting it I'm liking it better, so I'll bump it up to a 5 just for fun.

As I wrote in my Minor Threat review, I really respect Ian Mackaye alot. And I do like Minor Threat a good deal, but Fugazi is so much richer and more rewarding. It's astonishing how ahead of their time they were. Probably only held back from a wider influence by not being on a major label - but that's an important part of their story and their credibility. Indie in the truest sense, before it became a nearly meaningless term. Although I do like the two singer approach for its dynamics and contrast, whenever Ian MacKaye starts singing, I half wish he was the only singer in the group.

Cool, got this after just rating Minor Threat so it's gonna be neat to hear the progression for Ian MacKaye. Not sure I love Guy Picciotto's vocal styles, I think I prefer Ian's. The track Repeater definitely could be the opener for me. That squealing guitar is neat, definitely post-park with the interplay between abrasive and clean guitar. In general though... not a huge style of this rock sound.

04/07/2022 More angry punk/rock. Difficult to complete the full listen.

This was my first Fugazi listen, and it has been on rotation to some degree ever since. It set me on the path to full-blown fandom. I like Repeater because it really defined the band's sound and came before the lyrics progressively became too obtuse, so it retained some of that punk origin. Song #1, the title track, and Merchandise are my faves.

Fugazi might have the greatest rhythm section in rock ... ok maybe ranking just behind Entwhistle and Moon. But my oh my are they ever fast and tight, laying the ideal foundation for the bands stinging guitar / vocal attack. Unbelievably I had never heard this album before today. My favourite Fugazi album had been The Argument which shows off their more melodic side, but Repeater just might be my new favourite. It's just a non stop assault that still manages, thanks to the amazing bass playing, to remain clean and clear. In my previous review...of Ministry...I said that I will never warm to shout singing but somehow with Fugazi I can listen past it, maybe because musically it's so clean and tight and impressive technically. 4.5 🌟

Early '90s rock is such an interesting mess. The entire thing felt like a hit and miss. This album's opener, "Turnover", and closer, "Shut the Door" are absolute hits. The rest are pretty okay, I guess. The album as a whole has the rage and grittiness of punk, but it is damped by the wooshy noise of noise rock. That's post-hardcore I guess. Fascinating stuff.

It's OK. I'm not sure that I needed to listen to this before I die. Maybe the point is that I need to expose myself to new music each day.

I enjoyed the raw energy of this album. It seems pretty stripped down, straight forward angry rock. Nothing quite catchy enough to move it up the ratings, but there also wasn't anything that pushed me away. A good listen.

A really high octane outing that is probably a seminal rock album at a time of style transition. It really bridges the gap in between a more 80s style of hard/glam rock to what has now become known as garage/grunge rock. Repeater's subject matter addresses a wide variety of themes such as greed, violence, sexuality, privacy, drug abuse and death. Of which the themes are at the forefront of the grunge movement. Best: Repeater Worst: Brendan 1

Good album, I like 13 songs better or to be technically the first EP. Still not as good Minor Threat though.

I had to complete a mourning process for Minor Threat before being able to appreciate Fugazi. But they really are a pretty fantastic band. Ian MacKaye has the best yelling singing voice in the business, so I still have a hard time with his vocals when they are more “tuneful”.

Unlikely I've ever heard before, but mega ties to the punk/ska stuff I've been interested in. Not bad!

This one was noisy and monotonous for me, though I admit that I didn't try very hard to listen to it- just worked on something else with it in the background. Not really my thing, though a couple at the end, possibly the one titled Song 1, weren't as bad.

This likability of this was on the cusp and went back and forth from being noise I like. The cusp dwellers get 3 at the most.

I was disturbed to discover that there's actually a genre called "post-hardcore", yet pleased I had an album I could dismiss quickly and get on with my life. BUT then, guitar riff in the opening track blew me away and I read that there would be piano somewhere too (song 13 actually). Throughout, the guitar work is original, very riff-based - kind of Gang of 4 meets 80s metal, and they give the bassist and drummer room to play around a bit. The instrumentation deserves high marks, as do the lyrics, but the singing style is not for me. I can tolerate the 80s metal style but I'm not a fan of the pre-post-hardcore shouting.

This is some surprisingly nuanced post hardcore punk. They show some really good writing and their musicmanship is also pretty good. Their sound is pretty stripped down and fairly straightforward, just a guitarist/vocalist, bass player and drummer but they all rock out pretty good. Repeater shows some great chops and Song 1 sounds like a punked out Beastie Boys.

Excellent album. Fuga,I might have the best rhythm section in American Punk, (Minutemen?). And they are on full display on this fabulous album. Yes, sometimes the vocals can become jarring...grating, but really only on a couple of songs. In general the songs are really really good. Highly recommended. 4 🌟

Full of grooves and energy. Love the biting tone and just how infectious every track is on this record - its got that punk attitude and lyrical content, but it's paired with riffs and a musicality beyond a lot of the genre. Granted this is post-hardcore, which has plenty of musically flashy artists, but the rawness on here is seldom kept with such distinct guitar playing and focus on grooves

This album seems so straightforward when you start listening to it, and then it keeps surprising you as it goes. It sounds like a normal punk album, right down to the starkly plain lyrics. Underneath that lies so much more. The songs are well-crafted and leave a lot of room for the instrumentals to shine. Intense, but subtle. This album is a powerhouse of a debut 4/5

Somehow this album has missed large play by me. I had a copy in college, but lost it at some point and this is the first time I've heard it in years. Which is a shame, it's an amazing album that I should listen to a lot more. 13 Songs is the album I know the most, but this one might be a better album overall.

Love Fugazi! One of the greatest bands of all time. This is an absolute classic. Not necessarily my favorite Fugazi record but all their records are great. Hard to think of another band with such a consistently strong catalog. Got to meet Ian once after an Evens show (another great band, "Get Evens" is a great record) - was a nice guy too.

This is much better than I thought it would be. Catchy, short, fun songs with a lot of attitude. It's not for me, but I'll nod in understanding if someone else wants to nosebleed over this album.

A masterpiece of post-hardcore. It doesn't get much better than this.

Fugazi is basically a lesson in how to be an older punk. You can't be angry in the same way a kid can, but you can still show fire and not sell out. You can show that growth can be good. I always preferred Minor Threat's immediacy, but now I'm a bit older, I can actually enjoy this a lot more. Damn, the track Repeater sounds a little bit Paul Simon. It's really good. Half the speed of MT, but Ian MacKaye is still obviously there, still expressing. It's really good, it zips, it's fiercely anti capitalist, it is a good, but not quite five star album.

I love old school punk.

Not my cup of tea at all - inherent lyrics and punk(ish) vibe aren't for me. I hesitate to call it bad only because it's clear that it's well done for what they're trying to do. My top pick is 'Blueprint', I didn't mind the bassline.

i made a mistake. i went and looked at some of the other reviews before i started writing my own. my original review probably wouldn't have said much, because it's impossible for me to be objective about this album. but you know what, i was there for this - i saw it happen first-hand, and having read a bunch of people complaining that they sound like bands that came along after they did...kinda feels like i owe it to some random someone to put this out there. this was one of many projects ian was involved with, and is a direct descendent of minor threat. ian invented straightedge. he refused to platy shows that cost more than $5 to get into, because he wanted everyone to be able to go to shows. (i have a theory about how this ended up working out as a win for venues. knowing they were gonna get slaughtered at the door, they loaded the bill as much as they could, with the idea of making back their losses on future shows with opening acts, whose names were now much better-known.) anyway, ian was a big deal, is what i'm saying - though he was not (and probably still isn't) super comfortable with the idea of being a big deal. fugazi broke a bunch of rules musically, but they followed a bunch of others. they went into all kinds of improv live (as noted, i was there - at the channel in boston with 1200 other people sweating in leather and stomping in boots and reveling in the heat), and hell, the drummer (brendan canty) had a bell - like, kind of a big one - that he'd use in place of a cymbal sometimes. but at the same time, they were a reflection of their time, so a lot of the lyrics are angry screaming. sorry, that's just how it was. i like it, but i'm a product of that time, too. songs can feel a little repetitive - but that really really works when you're on your skateboard across town for 45 minutes to get to your girlfriend's house. and it works when you're in the pit and just swimming in the sea of humanity that was one of their shows. in short, this isn't an album that was meant to be on in the background while you write code - it's for going out and doing something in the world with. hit the ramp, hit the parking lot behind the grocery store and work on your power slides, climb a rock...whatever - just do a physical thing, and this album will feel more at home in your ears. if i'm wrong, i'll buy you a coke.

I didn't enjoy this album. Musically it's pretty good though not at all what I enjoy, however, the awful po-faced singing ruined it. I can't see this album's appeal. For the same period I'd rather be listening to Sonic Youth.

Would I listen again? Probably, yeah.

Fugazi is one of those 'just before my time' bands. I was too busy discovering Dinosaur Jr and Pixies in the early nineties to go back in time even a few years. I knew Fugazi were important and I can certainly see their influence on bands that I was into (especially something like At The Drive-In, much later) but I prefer 'my version' of this sound. Listening to it now I think I am enjoying the historical references more than the music. It certainly has it's moments but it's a bit too jazzy for me and I am not too keen on those muffled, indierock voices. 7/10

I loved the opening notes of this album - I was thinking I was going to really enjoy this.... and then the vocals started. Sigh. Getting tired of vocals ruining so many records on this list. I feel like I've written this so many times but for me vocals will almost never ever make an album but they sure as shit can wreck one. Could use a solid week of instrumental albums after this and Methuselah Leonard Cohen. No constructive review here - I am not really fond of listening to most things in the punk realm, so I couldn't say this is horrid trash (e.g. Velvet Underground, Le Tigre, FatBoy Slim - I question life itself when hearing those) and if punk is your thing, this is probably gonna be highly-rated. ... I suppose if anything positive here...the music is actually pretty good? Kinda? Maybe? Yay? no it's ok to admit it: I hate this. 3/10 1 star

Fugazi holds great importance for their contributions to the post-hardcore genre. They are my favorite band's favorite band. Underneath the screaming vocals and loud guitar, these guys are expert songwriters. It is computationally complex without becoming overbearing or boring. It is simply a better vehicle to carry hardcore punk to new heights. Obviously they are not the first post-hardcore band, with the likes of Minutemen and Husker Du doing great things with the genre in the 80's, but 90's post-hardcore was ran by Fugazi, alongside Unwound, The Jesus Lizard, and a particularly notable album from Slint. I think this is the stuff of champions.

I've had a few albums like this one so far on here. It feels like I should really be into this album and band. But I don't know it sorta misses the mark, I absolutely want to like it more than I do. It's not bad, it's fairly solid. Feels very Tony Hawk soundtrack to me which is kinda cool I guess.

Angry Gen X white guy yelling. In 1990 this is too late to be authentic punk I guess? After wikipedia-ing it this is "post-hardcore." Repeater sounds like pissed off Modest Mouse. I'm sure this was an influence on them. Not as into the more (what I consider) punk tracks like Greed... I like the instrumental tracks. The songs are a little repetitive as I work through it. Strong start that kind of devolves into fodder for angry suburban white kids. Probably would not listen to any of this again. 👍

Amazing how some people hear a song like "Shut The Door" and think it's nothing more than just punk. Even more amazing is the fact that this isn't even Fugazi's best album

crunchy grooves, expressive guitar riffs, and some genuinely solid lyrics. for any fans of The Knife out there: i noticed in the song Blueprint he says "what a difference a little difference would make." which is a lyric in Raging Lung off shaking the habitual... i have to imagine karin got it from this album; pretty cool source to pull from.

There's a reason Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Pearl Jam's "Ten" became breakthrough albums and crossed into the mainstream and this one just sputtered on the launching pad. Pass. Hard pass. Just doesn't do it for me. I tried, but this was some rough sledding. It wouldn't hurt my feelings at all to have this bumped off the list in favor of Pearl Jam's "Vs." or even "Vitalogy".

This isn’t even my favorite Fugazi album, but this album goes hard as fuck. What a one of a kind band.
