I wasn't able to give this the attention I wanted to, but at the same time, a spin through the album was all I needed to recognize this band isn't going to make my "must-listen" list. I was glad to hear it, I have listened to Fugazi before, but not much — I thought I was going to be in for a full-metal onslaught. Now I know better, so it was educational. Good on them. They'll have to carry on without me.

Maybe listen again. Sounds really polished.

I’m pretty sure that I discovered Fugazi through MySpace many moons ago, which definitely ages me somewhat. I can’t remember any specific songs I heard from them back then, but if I remember correctly they were punk. This leaves me hopeful for today’s listen, so let’s find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Merchandise, Reprovisional It feels kind of hard to put a number on the album. As a punk album, it sounds very good and exactly as I would have hoped. If I was an anarchistic teenager with plenty of angst then I would possibly have loved this. However, I’m not an apathetic thirty-something year old who likes hot chocolates and trying her best to ignore the goings on in the world. In that, I’m not as mad about this as maybe I once would have been. Regardless, I did enjoy it, so there’s that.

pretty unique sounding album, especially for the time. This album shows the transition from traditional hardcore to a more alternative sound.

Foot tapping. Catchy. Nothing super special tho, middle tracks get a little dull but they start and end pretty strong. I like the guitar tone on Shut the door.

It seems to have a cult following. As someone from a completely different part of the world - I have never heard of them. It's giving me skate punk vibes with a bit of ambition to be something more than that. And it kind of irritates me because it somehow gets pretentious and insincere? I don't know. Repeater is a great tune though. up to 3

Could not quite get a handle on this. A few glimpses of exciting tracks and hyper-energetic but hard to see what stood out in this album. Perhaps shook things up at the time.

This has the elements that I like about Fugazi, the tight bass and drums with abrasive guitars. However I never liked this album and still didn’t really enjoy it this time. I think it lacks the hooks and choruses that The Argument has, which is my favourite of theirs. I didn’t find any song particularly memorable.

I listened to this twice - once on my commute to work, and once back. I liked it better the first time (maybe I was in a worse mood because I was going to work as opposed to leaving, who knows?) I appreciate what it is and they're certainly talented, but I prefer my music to be a little more melodic

Lots of interesting musicality interacting through Hard Rock. Didn't listen as intently as desired, but certainly a good and important album for what it is

The good parts are good: The band is clearly at play and mixing skill onto the recording. However, the thesis falls just too flat. Neither obscure nor illuminating, there's truth to the advice to listen to Repeater in specific times and places. Now, at relative rest, seems like a subpar choice.

Quite good, but not outstanding - would make a good support group, but I wouldn't pay to see them.

Prima punk

What a strong memory on nearly every song. It‘s raw but has a slight pop appeal. The drums are super intensifing the whole structure. In the long run it feels a bit too long for these 42 minutes. 3.4

color me impressed! upon my listen, it was easy to hear similarities with nirvana and rage against the machine. it's a shame fugazi isn't as well known as those bands, considering they laid the stepping stones. i hear some more punk in this album than i typically do for alternative rock in the nineties. fugazi's repeater didn't blow me out of the water as something i'd listen to again, but i appreciated it. to include something specific and positive on this album: fugazi didn't waste a lot of time writing lyrics! that isn't necessarily a bad thing--we all can't be taylor swift. but some of it i enjoyed. the "every slip's not a slide" line from "reprovisional" was particularly poignant.

This album came as somewhat of a surprise, musically. The genre here is "post-hardcore", and what I'm interpreting that as in this case is this movement from the very eclectic, heavy punk scene into a more melodic alternative and/or grunge rock sound. This album definitely exists somewhere in that in-between transitional space, neither quite one or the other. This album is another example of a breeding ground and jumping off point for the evolution of music. Unlike other "proto" type genre albums on this project where the album's presence seems to be based more on its contribution to music history and based less on its actual enjoyability, this album actually shines in both areas. As indicated above, it creates something unique and presents a good mix of two different musical worlds. And while this album no doubt fed into the alt/grunge 90s scene, this particular sound mix even seems to provide somewhat of a blueprint for the 2000s emo/screamo movement. No doubt a lot of bands have been influenced by this album in one way or another. While I wouldn't say any specific songs stood out here, I definitely found myself enjoying this album as a whole, both for its influence and its sound!

I love how playful this is. There are moments when they rock out like a hardcore band and moments that sound more like artsy post-punk. The songs move and change enough that you can’t easily nail down the style. They’re a restless band. There’s some excellent musicianship throughout. “Brendan #1” in particular is gorgeous.

Sure it's uncompromising, but also insistently ugly and non-melodic. It's as if Fugazi doesn't want many people to like or enjoy their outputs, in which case they've succeeded gloriously, despite a few well-wrought riffs and moods. What might have been with some variance in the textures and some competent vocals. One understands they were great live; one knows intuitively that it would have been difficult to tell the songs apart or withstand the assault for very long.

It's definitely a good album and Fugazi sure knows how to play their instruments. It's not really my type of rock and I couldn't really get into the album even though I understand why people like it.

I want to like this. But nothing stands out. It's a good album. But not a great album. I give plus 1 star though (maybe unfairly) simply because I adore Fugazi's work ethic and view on Capitalism.

Man, back in the day, I knew some dudes (it was always dudes) who were super into Fugazi. Like... REALLY into these guys. I never understood the appeal. They're kind of a mess. Clearly a bunch of talented musicians, for sure. But the music they made is mostly just a mess. None of these tracks are terrible but every track comes up short. I mean, I like it more now than I did back then but that's not really saying much about the band and more about my increased tolerance for nonsense, I think. Anyway, I'll give it middling marks for putting out something vaguely interesting and then move on to more engaging albums.

An angry and raw record that preceded the big grunge classics that followed later in the early 1990s.

Most excellent pre-grunge. The rhythm section sounds amazing. Not usually my style but I saved a couple - Sieve-Fisted Find and Joe #1.

Best Song: Merchandise. Feels like a song I'd listen to while I play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2. Worst Song: Two Beats Off. I didn't come to this punk show for people to whine. Overall: Nice and crusty proto punk. Not my genre, but good for what it is. I can imagine it'd be great in a live show. In my headphones, not so much.

This was just boring? No songs stood out and didn't find the singing or music particularly engaging. Just all sounds the same. 5/10.

Before today, I'd only heard of Fugazi, but had never listened to them before. The way I heard of them was actually through another album I've already reviewed on this generator. That album was Out of Step by Minor Threat. The singer from that band, Ian MacKaye, is also the singer for this band. I loved that album, it was awesome punk, and this album is post hardcore punk. Ian never wanted to be part of a band who could ever be accused of selling out, so when Minor Threat made it to the mainstream, he left the band for another, eventually creating Fugazi. This wasn't as strong as his Minor Threat stuff, I found. Maybe I'm just not as much a fan of post hardcore punk? Whatever the reason, this just didn't resonate with me the way the Minor Threat album did. This album is full of distorted guitars, machine gun drums, and screaming lyrics. I can hear how the Offspring drew influence from songs such as Merchandise. Overall, not bad, but not great. Just average. I kind of couldn't keep focused on this album today. One song would blend into the next. Good music that was absolutely influential, but I doubt I will revisit. Standouts: Repeater Other: Merchandise, Greed. I’ve heard this album before. The only song that I remembered was ‘Repeater’. Everything else was like hearing it for the first time. You can tell they are talented. I think that the songs would be better if sung by someone with a unique and stand-out voice. The vocals just seemed like any number of bar-bands playing the hits of other artists. I think this album is on the list because musically (not vocally) the album does seem to be ahead of its time and was probably an influence on later artists. It is barely above average. 3/5

Particularly like the track where he sings about Ribena. Feel like it doesn’t get sung about enough. Jokes aside this is the highlight of the album and comes quite early. I think I prefer Fugazi as a best of artist, there albums tend to drone through between highlights I like Fugazi. Good tracks on here but none of my faves really. Would listen again.

Fun, high energy, rocky, really enjoyed on a first listen and will likely come back to them. Some would say this album may be a Repeater. Haha!

I liked this. A little less "hardcore" than I was expecting, which is a good thing. Reminds me a bit of early Replacements - loud, raucous, and fun. 3 stars.

Pretty good if you're in the mood for something that is an island in between the 80s and 90s.

I liked this ok… listened to it a couple of times today. I still kind of scratch my head about this being “a landmark of rock music.” Maybe it would have felt more that way had I listened to this in 1990. Listening to it today I thought it was fine.

Pretty cool punk band.

Drôle d'album. On n'a pas l'impression d'une session d'enregistrement, mais d'un collage de différents enregistrements. Peut-être que mes attentes était trop haute puisque j'adore l'album 13 Songs, compilation des 2 premiers EP du groupe. Il y quand même de bons riffs. Merchandise, la fin de Blueprint et Sieve-Fisted Find en sont de bons exemples. Dans la veine de Gang of Four, avec Fugazi, on s'en va vers des bands comme At The Drive-In et Rage Against The Machine (Il faut écouter la basse sur Joe #1).

Not bad...

Fugazi is kind of hit or miss for me. I've just never spent much time listening to them. This album is fine and all, but I'd probably never seek it out on purpose to give it another listen.

Punky. Fine. Nothing to write home about.

I liked this album, but I think that is because it is the exact kind of music that I am passionate about, but I don't consider it so different from any other thing that I have listened to before. Apparently (according to Wikipedia), they were very influential in the early 90s, but it does not sound atemporal to me. Going deep on the band's Wikipedia page, I must say that their posture in the music business is admirable but considering only this "Repeater" album, I rate it three stars.

I like this better than most of the Minor Threat stuff. The whole band writing the songs together seemed to work well.

Not crazy about the vocals but the are exactly what they are meant to be. The music sans vocals is awesome.

Not my type of music generally, enjoyed a few tunes though, particularly the titular one. 2.9

Early '90s rock is such an interesting mess. The entire thing felt like a hit and miss. This album's opener, "Turnover", and closer, "Shut the Door" are absolute hits. The rest are pretty okay, I guess. The album as a whole has the rage and grittiness of punk, but it is damped by the wooshy noise of noise rock. That's post-hardcore I guess. Fascinating stuff.

I enjoyed the raw energy of this album. It seems pretty stripped down, straight forward angry rock. Nothing quite catchy enough to move it up the ratings, but there also wasn't anything that pushed me away. A good listen.

This likability of this was on the cusp and went back and forth from being noise I like. The cusp dwellers get 3 at the most.

This is some surprisingly nuanced post hardcore punk. They show some really good writing and their musicmanship is also pretty good. Their sound is pretty stripped down and fairly straightforward, just a guitarist/vocalist, bass player and drummer but they all rock out pretty good. Repeater shows some great chops and Song 1 sounds like a punked out Beastie Boys.

I've had a few albums like this one so far on here. It feels like I should really be into this album and band. But I don't know it sorta misses the mark, I absolutely want to like it more than I do. It's not bad, it's fairly solid. Feels very Tony Hawk soundtrack to me which is kinda cool I guess.

Angry Gen X white guy yelling. In 1990 this is too late to be authentic punk I guess? After wikipedia-ing it this is "post-hardcore." Repeater sounds like pissed off Modest Mouse. I'm sure this was an influence on them. Not as into the more (what I consider) punk tracks like Greed... I like the instrumental tracks. The songs are a little repetitive as I work through it. Strong start that kind of devolves into fodder for angry suburban white kids. Probably would not listen to any of this again. 👍

Some cracking songs but I think whilst the album was influential and all that, its not as 'good' as I'd like. A high 3 in the end.

Grew on me as I went through it. Probably would have liked it when I was 12 in the mid 90s and listening to a lot of Offspring. Now I find it just ok.

Wanted to but couldn’t

I kept wanting to get more into it than I could. There's a lot about punk and post-punk that I like, but the vocal style of a lot of punk singers doesn't quite work for me.

Never heard of this band. It doesn't initially sound like I will like it but I'm a sucker for a cross over music styles. They sound likea mix between The Misfits and The beastie boys. They also bring in some heavy rock sounds from the 70's. These dudes rock hard...remind me of zeppelin.

Had only heard ‘Waiting Room’ before from a different album. Bass guitar seems to drive the whole album. Can feel the influence roll onto some bands like nirvana/offspring etc.

Fugazi's a band whose albums I have tough time getting into, even if they have great individual songs on them. That said, this is pretty good, def recommended if you're into punk at all.

Fun embarrassing fact: when I was 6 years old I thought the Fugees and Fugazi were the same artist. Anyway, musically I guess enjoyed it enough. The energy was seeping through the songs. But nothing stood out to me. Lyrically, I'm pretty ambivalent. Not sure if I'd be enthusiastic for a re-listen. It was fine.

I've heard a lot about Fugazi but never bothered to check them out. I know they're punkish underground darlings (with that Melvins/Kyuss/Clutch/etc crowd), and I think I've avoided them because I'm worried I'll actually like it. haha. I'm betting it'll either be frustratingly good, or inaccessible shit. And lol yeah, it's not too bad. A couple of tracks here could definitely make my "alternative stuff" playlist. It's kinda noisy and dumb in places, but there's enough catchiness elsewhere to offset it. There's an 80s NYHC vibe going on here and there, which I wasn't expecting. Some of it has an artsy feel, like the Black Flag albums where Rollins took over (I guess this is what the hipsters love about them). And there are a lot of similarities to early Offspring? Like first 3 albums or so, definitely not Ixnay onwards, but wasn't expecting that either. But somehow the volume changes wildly between songs. Whoever mixed this did a pretty bad job. 3/5.

I get the importance of Fugazi in the hard-core world. I get that they are important to both the genre and the city of D.C. I get it. But....these songs just aren't very good! There's no doubt that they come across better live with the band and crowd's energy but as a record? This meh.

Post Hardcore in ihrer rohesten, kantigsten Form: politisch geladen, rhythmisch vertrackt, kompromisslos. Genau das macht das Album aber auch sperrig – viele Songs wirken eher wie Skizzen eines Ideals als wie vollständig ausgearbeitete Stücke. Die Energie ist da, die Haltung sowieso, aber der Funke und Struktur springen zu selten wirklich über.

There's some nostalgia to this that reminds me of old anime J-Rock, but other than that, I am not a fan. I am sure people liked this back in the day, but it's not doing anything for me now.

Although I like a number of similar bands of the era and style but Fugazi just never hit for me. I was hoping something on this would jump out but unfortunately no.

Not sure what post hardcore means. Am generally negative about US punk music. I quite enjoyed some of the songs (eg Styrofoam) but the production /recording feels really flat/ industrial and lacking any energy or spontaneity. I'm sure live they would be a lot more fun.

The instruments here, both what's been written for them and how they're played, are close to perfect for a hard rock album. The bass, guitar, and drums all work together as one unit and make some fantastic music together. In this respect, the album is a 4/5. The vocals are another story. Sometimes they're mediocre, other times they're awful. They sound like some of the parody bands from the skit show Portlandia. They sorta ruin the album for me. Lyrics fare a little better. Some are alright, and some are lame. Vocals have a range of 1 to 3 out of 5 and lyrics a range of 1 to 4 out of 5. Cool album and worth a listen. But man, those vocals.

I would say some songs fall into the three stars category, but the over all album is two stars. I did hear what I thought were some Beastie Boys influences in a couple of songs.

It's got this raw hardcore sound that, while showing the passion of the band, doesn't really go anywhere. The album really doesn't sync well with my ears; maybe it's the riffs or his voice. I'm not sure.

It was cool with some of its aggressive lyrics and instrumentals, but this one really didn't land well with me. I'd probably give it a 2.5 if possible - I found myself not liking this more than liking it, so I'll go with a 2.

This was a miss for me mostly. Post-hardcore is doing a lot of work that I don’t really care for. While the guitar and rhythms works well together, it felt fast, angry, and aimless. I didn’t enjoy it that much and it mostly was unobtrusive.

Most of the album sounded the same to me. At the beginning, I was wondering how many minutes the first song was because it was so long, but then I realized I was actually on the third song?? Anyways among all the very similar sounding songs, Merchandise and Shut the Door got my attention. Merchandise sounds the most different from everything else and Shut the Door had an awesome base line but I'm not a fan of the lyrics. Actually, I don't really know if I like any of the lyrics in the entire album but who am I to comment on lyrics when I'm a vibe listener.

I get that this might be historically important to punk and the band, but it was one big haze of anger all the way through.

The instrumentals on this album are good. They’re really high energy and get you hyped. The lyrics get a bit repetitive and leave a little to be desired. It’s a fun listen and has a place for when you’re trying to hype people up but other than that I wouldn’t throw this on.

Don’t know why this is called “hardcore”. It’s very emotional and mostly softer than what I think of when I hear “hardcore”.

It was alright, wasnt very well produced but that is probably intended. The singing was good and the lyrics, but the overall product just was not it. There was a few songs I enjoyed like 'Repeater' and 'Shut the Door' but overall was not very enjoyable. 5/10

These guys have got 1.3 million listeners per month on Spotifiy and I have never heard of them. After listening to this album, I don't think I am going to be another regular listener. It's not awful and I now have the vocabulary to describe this as post-punk, pre-grunge hardcore, but there's still not anything there that I like. every song sounds the same to me and I can't dance or even nod along to any of them.

Mostly uninterested by this area of music, and this album doesn't do an awful lot to change that for me.

The nicest thing I can say is "not for me."

Not a ton to say about the substance and individual songs of this record, but I did have a realization about two thirds of the way through listening. I think I finally can differentiate the ethos and aesthetics of British punk vs American punk (or post punk, in this case?). Anyways, wasn’t crazy for this one, may not ever be crazy for most things from this time and genre, but I feel it’s angry disposition and feel it’s rage. Strong 2/5

The music is not bad. Several songs do sound very similar. I am not a fan of the vocalist. Sounds like he was recruited off the street. A bad street. A street where no one knows how to sing.

It’s noisy, but that’s fine—it’s punk rock. I understand the whole DIY ethos, but I still wonder if it could have been better resolved. Maybe there’s too much certainty, too much confidence, which ends up sounding pretentious without fully delivering.

Fugazi is a vaguely familiar name, though I could be mistaken. Whatever genre they belong to is up in the air, however. The album cover is giving me rock vibes, but the hardcore kind that wasn't traditional with rock in the 90s. Is this gonna be a grunge album? Oh, hey. Post-hardcore. The Dismemberment Plan is one of my all-time favourite bands, though that's about as far as my appreciation for this genre goes. Even then, my main appreciation for the D-Plan comes from their fantastic lyrical wit, so I might as well not be a fan of the genre at all. This doesn't do much to win me over, truth be told. The bassy, grungy sound is superficially pleasing, though there isn't much in here which really piques my interest. The title track has a neat, bassy sound. I like when the lead guitars duck into the track, too. I like the guitar strumming on "Two Beats Off". "Shut the Door" is a solid closer. I, again, like the punchy guitars. Book time. A transitionary period within the band's sound and identity, though that's about it. Wikipedia reveals that this album is a "landmark of rock music", moved half a million units, predated many popular rock acts from the 90s and has a respectable critical reception. Seems like good enough reasons to me. I cosign this inclusion.

Repeater - Fugazi It’s not that bad, it just didn’t click for me. It is loud, nice live instrumentation, nothing crazy or innovating. I don’t even remember the names of the songs. They’re not great vocalists either, tbh. The name of the album indicates that you’re going to listen again, but it’s not the case here. At all!!! It’s just sad. 2.3/10. Nice album cover tho.

Post-hardcore really isn't my bag

The idea of Fugazi is something I can get behind. Independent punk ethos, fans first attitude (cheap shows), general solid-dude energy. As a teen I heard all of this, and I knew of Ian MacKaye from Minor Threat (A band I enjoyed) So I went out and but Repeater by Fugazi. I was instantly disappointed. The music did nothing for me. The punk energy was drained for post-hardcore dirge. A dirge that highlighted the poor yell-singing that was all over it. I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't for me, and as much as I respect the Fugazi ethos, I never became a fan. So it goes. A few years later, after another failed attempt to get into Fugazi I posted on Social Media that Fugai sucked. A friend of mine then decided to argue with me that because they were punk (they're not really) of course they sucked, because sucking was the point of punk. (his words not mine) I tried to say something along the lines of: a) they aren't punk. b) punk is not just playing instruments bad. c) it's not that I thought Fugazi didn't know how to play or were actively being "bad" for whatever reason. But my man just kept pushing this point of them being punk and therefore are inherently bad. It just really drove me bonkers. He was patronizing me by giving his ill-defined meaning of punk. He was missing my point. And being an ass about the whole thing. All that to say that after giving it another listen today I can say, I still don't like Fugazi music. But they are fine at what they do. It's just not for me.

There's a lot of noise here. And not all of it good. I struggle with the US interpretation of punk, post-punk. It doesn't speak to me. This sounds more metal than the street talk of UK punk.

I had heard of Fugazi, but never got around to listening to their records. The instrumental rock performances are fantastic (for punk that is), but the lyrics came off like the naive whinging of a child. It's the kind of music where you enjoy the pulse and bob, but then roll your eyes about how silly the lyrics are while munching down on a very early morning breakfast at an all-night Denny's restaurant. My favorite track was the instrumental "Brendan #1".

Good, powerful instrumentals with rough screamy lyrics. I feel like the lyrics do have content they're just hard to catch. 2.4 outta 5

Flirting with 2 stars already - Song 3 is an instrumental. I don't mind this one

I think Regurgitator would be a suitable replacement for this crappy band.

I lost my original notes. It was truly the first artist I'd never heard of before. 10th album review. This was heavy rock, kind of fun but not my thing. It felt like the kind of series intro or scene transition music that you'd hear in a Bourdain documentary.

Really unenjoyable listening experience, think it came down to the vocals for me. It sounded like it was trying to be something different. I have discovered a lot of punk/ post-punk through this list that I did enjoy but this album was repetitive and I was waiting for it to be over. I appreciate that it was influential so it avoids the 1 star on that basis.

Knew of the group, kinda, thought they were metal, was pleased to see they are listed as alternative. Track one was pleasing, went downhill after that. 2.5 rounded down. Not a great week so far.

I was pretty wasted and stumbled into a club where this band was playing (this was 1991) and I thought it was Fugazi but they were really different than I thought they'd be but it turns out they were the Fugees, which is what I wish I'd been listening to instead.

Can't say I enjoyed this one.

Somehow this band flew under my radar, now I know why. Album had few decent songs but overall just sounded like slightly heavier punk rock.

Band can whip up a storm of energy, but each of the tracks feels less like a song than a series of disconnected riffs glued together. Doesn't help that the singing is monotonal and colorless either.
