Reviews (page 7 of 7)
More tiresome, dull, misogyny. Too much of this in the list.
Thought this was really quite poor, basic beats and quite corny bars
I just really don't like hip hop apparently... The songs and album are relatively short but they feel so repetitive and just drone on and on and on... like we get it, you're a "dirty rotten scoundrel" okay cool
1.5/5
This would be 5 stars if this list was “1001 Corniest Albums”
huh?
pija
I think it’s not good. His voice is fine, but the lyrics are not clever or interesting and the production is weak. Sorry East Coast, this isn’t it.
D. Original: the instrumental is quite disturbing to listen to. Same comment for the rest actually. Da Bichez: much better Same problem after. Ain't the devil happy: ok Overall, meh. Saw someone who had written: this album is (c)rap perfect description
ай гес май фьорст евер одиниця, говно якесь чесно
p725. 1994. 1 star. (C)rap. This no better (and probably a bit worse) than the rest of the 1 star rap albums on this list. The rule still applies: if no-one is talking about an album 5 or more years after it's release, it's not essential listening.
I saw the cover and audibly let out a sound of disappointment. How bad can this be? It sucks.
rap music... !! 01/20/2026
No, no, no
OMG. Real awful.
Easy one to rate for me. With a song titled "Da Bichez" you simply cannot later defend your choices in by saying in songs that you are not misogynistic and not sexist - your lyrics are evidently both of these things. Pick a lane and stay in it. Again, like the previous album by the Sex Pistols, using slurs against the LGBTQ+ community is unnecessary. Punching down detracts from any message trying to be presented in this album. 1/5 stars for ignorant lyrics.
Yeah, no I’m good.
"The Damaja"? That name alone already signals that I can't take this artist seriously. I was fast forwarding through everything and feeling a generous 2-stars until I got to "Da Bichez". The sentiment and spelling dropped this album to a 1-star and I couldn't listen to any more.

Caca de vaca. Peñazo.
Repetitive, slow AND boring? 1988-style raps in 1994? Where do I sign up? Hey he has a rap called “Da Bitchez” on here. You will never guess what he thinks of da bitchez. Not in a million years. Aw, you guessed!
Not for me
I tried
No
What a messy album. Something annoying is happening in the background of nearly every track. Did someone let a cat randomly walk across a piano while they were recording D. Original? In Mental Stamina it’s impossible to listen to the rhymes because some kind of missile warning alarm is constantly going off. At other times people clatter around with drums or toot a trumpet for absolutely no reason connected to the song. There might be a good album hiding in there somewhere but you would need more concentration that I have to find it underneath all the random crap happening.
I really try, this is a genre I don't like and I try to listen to the album but uuugh. I couldn't finish this one either.

Not for me.
Not really my vibe but a bit catchy 3/10
Näst sista låten heter Jungle Music och det är precis vad det är.
Wikipedia is really stretching by mentioning this guy in the same article as Wu Tang and Biggie.
Well it’s been a while since I had to endure a shitty album like this. So I’m thankful for the month or so since my last hipperty hopperty crap rap album but fearful that another one is just around the corner. 1/5 16/8/25
Another rapper talking about stuffing dead bodies in the trunk of a car. Is this a sub genre? This is not for me at all.
Nope
I tried...I really tried
In a nutshell: mid-hop Overall: 2/10
Nooooo!!!!!!!!
The Good: We get to learn something new today! The Bad: It is a lie… The Ugly: Trying to decipher the rest of the album to see how many more lies are in there… Every additional word that I add to this review is a word too many. I don’t like rap… I don’t understand why I have to listen to an album which is not even rated in the best 50 best rap albums ever… so thanks for wasting my time. 1*
it wasn't awful, but it wasn't good.
When you see a pre-2000s album with "(Explicit Version)" in the title and three 1-minute interlude tracks, you know you're in for a bumpy ride. Actually, The Sun Rises In The East isn't too bad (sonically), other than lacking energy and creativity compared to most 21st-century hip-hop material. In many tracks, the quality is kind of blurry, as though the instruments are submerged underwater. The production is definitely nowhere near the height at which other reviewers are touting it. Lots of fun drum noises and sampling does not equate to good-sounding production even if it was technically difficult to pull off. There are too many misogynistic lines to keep tracks of (and here I was thinking hip-hop was lyrically listenable before the 90s). Plus, of course, the all-too-common problem of having no melody, making it almost intentionally unmarketable and unlistenable. At least put in some sung choruses! – because the constant onslaught of monotonous noise gets old really quickly. The song Da Bichez is the first decent track in terms of pure instrumental sound (the drumming, bass, and trombone are on point), but unfortunately the lyrics are so obviously terrible that you can't possibly enjoy them and simultaneously be a good person. "Most chicks(...) spend up all your ends, probably fuck your friends / High-post attitudes, real rude with fat asses / Think that the pussy is made out of gold" ...Then, in the very same track, Jeru The Damaja goes on with the absolute corker "I body slam her but I'm not a misogynist". You can't make this up. The vocal distortions in the line "B-B-Brooklyn keeps on t-t-takin' it" are pretty sweet, though. Also the "Oh-oh! Heads up 'cause we're dropping some shit" in Come Clean is nifty. Not enough to push the record beyond 1 star, but then the website average is a viciously generous 2.94 stars, so what do I know? 1/5 Key tracks: Ain't The Devil Happy, My Mind Spray, Jungle Music
Mediocre, forgettable beats. Trite rhymes (i’m the flyest, other mcs are whack, Brooklyn is rough) and stilted flow. What’s to like?
Not for me
Hip Hop, 35eme album => 1/5
Nada de hip hop, creo que mi hardware no lo tiene permitido
Meh
Not my thing
This is not my thing.
I don't like hip-hop, man. The only hip-hop album I enjoyed was "IGOR" by Tyler, The Creator, last September and I haven't found anything that came close since :') Please, 1001Albums, give me a Morrissey album instead.
More super clever songs about n words and bitches, awesome.
So gar nicht meins. Teilweise einfach nur Sprache ohne Rhythmus über die Musik gelegt. Nach drei Songs nochmal ein paar angespielt und dann aus gemacht. 1/5
Just not my taste / genre
The music was ok (some great bass lines in there) but I have no clue what the message was. Reading the song titles it’s probably for the best. The world of perverted Monks and da Bichez is a world that can remain alien to me. Rating wise, I’m giving it as high in the 1 star range as I can before it tips over into an unwarranted 2.
I was expecting the worst, it's always good to set ones expectations before embarking on most things. Sometimes it is good to have surprises too. This was a surprise as it wasn't as dog shit as I thought it would be. Still, I was glad it ended and I could put on some Kylie.
What’s with these fuck ass beats and odd flows lol. I feel like they used long words because they thought it would be impressive, but most of these lyrics don’t really make sense. Also they’re definitely misogynistic.
Everything bad about 90s hip-hop here, while also being boring.
2/10 Got very bored after the first couple of tracks. Had to skip Da Bitches, with it's terrible, dated lyrics. Also was about to skip Mental Stamina with it's atonal, arythmic phone beep thing. Not good.
HipHop with a musician which spits slow and over articulates while still managing to mumble. The beats are mediocre and there’s not an identifiable flow.
This is of no interest to me and seems pretty weak anyway. 1 star or F+.
Well that was original....(desperately searching for an irony emoji)
Nope. Next?
Some of the samples are interesting but he rides almost all of them too long, so they overstay their welcome. None of this really stood out to me.
Not for me
Couldn’t finish. I don’t like the style.
I find this kind of music very confronting and really didn’t enjoy. Fist of the selections I only listened through only once.
A really terrible album. I'm certainly no big fan of HipHop but a lot of artists base their music on samples, whiche are often interwoven with the rap singing in an interesting way. But here, nothing, void, total abyss.
*No music on this album - just rap and noise
Escuchas una canción y las escuchaste todas
Fitting that my last album of this project would be the absolute bottom of the barrel, the very dregs of music. What a pile of crap. The album, its cover, the music, it all comes together in a cornucopia of crap. 1 star, but should be 0.
Why are there so many hip-hop albums in this list? To me, this sounds no different from any of the other hip-hop albums in the list and is just as unremarkable. Going by the number of plays, Spotify users don't rate it very heighly either.
Nö!
Sorry Jeri, just not feeling the darkness today, thanks for stopping by tho. 1 Star
It's just more rap. Unbelievable - how did so much rap get onto this list? I definitely don't EVER need to hear any more rap before I die. I hate it more now than I did before starting this project. The more I hear, the more I hate it.
Hip Hop shit hop not me do rap crap.
I damajed my ears listening to this. There’s so much better hip hop out there.
1/5
Same old repetitive rap beat from the 90’s.
90's hip hop rap. not the worst or best. I still think its dumb. (I give it one star for the promising unexpected start to 'Come Clean') turned it off before it made me dumber.
Nope. Absolutely rubbish. Or not for me
Stupid
Rap / HipHop is not my Taste!
Not my favourite listen. Some tracks were more annoying than a dripping tap
Listened to about a minute of the first track then put abbey road on instead.
I see an angry disembodied elf in the cover art, and that is probably not what they were going for here. As I typically say with most of these hip hop/ rap albums, I don't know how to grade or compare these. In my world this sounds similar to Biz Markee without the funny. That could be a terrible comparison, but I'm just not a fan of the content even if I can appreciate the flow, spit, or whatever. Favorite track "D Original" 1/5
1 - Me caga el RAP
Yes. The rap. Very rappy rap. It's simply not my style. At all. And we've had a bunch of it recently, with some albums surprisingly enjoyable to me. This one just sounds like very typical rap to me. Therefore, I don't enjoy it. The jarring samples and loops such as the super annoying phone ringing on Mental Stamina definitely don't help either.
I don’t Like Hip-Hop
No me ha gustado demasiado.
No more old school rap. Please I'm so done. Abt 47 to go
Weak flow. Cliché pseudo-intellectual rimes. Toddler beats: somehow simultaneously annoying and boring.
not my thing, lots of cussing.
Hip hops straight off the turntable and into the bin.
nope
I am sorry, not a hip-hop fan. I tried.
Not my thing
This is the style of hip-hop that I tend to tolerate the best: musical hooks and non-screaming vocals. However, there really wasn't anything about this album that stood out to me; musically or otherwise.
Heard before: no Some decent beats, but ultimately, this is an ok late 80s/early 90s East Coast hip hop record, even if it's a little generic for this list. Because there's nothing else to recommend it, I have even less patience for lyrics like Da Bichez. When I want this vibe, I doubt this will be the record I reach for. Top tracks: Come Clean (E New Y Radio), Ain't The Devil Happy, You Can't Stop The Prophet
Not my cup of tea.
Nah, not for me this one, nothing in the musical side of it caught my ear and the rapping seemed pretty generic
Not a rap fan
Koukkuina dissonantteja jazz-sampleja. Jätän diggailuyritykset suosiolla muille.
Terrible!
I didn't listen to this album
Meh, ekki minn tebolli.
Nope
The discordant piano riff is cool with the beat over, pretty good so far. Hmm, bitches and hoes already? Ain't The Devil Happy? With the violins, it is pretty good. It's when the beat and an off-kilter riff or sample comes together that the song is lifted. It works again on this track, Come Clean... The beats are alright, the rhymes are alright, the flow is alright, it's just a bit forgettable. 2 / 5 stars. (I have since been made aware of the homophobia on one track, so yeah. Nope.) 1 / 5 stars.
The only thing I know about East Coast versus West Coast is that Tupac was West Coast, biggie was East Coast and they were both shot. If I delved into the meaning behind the beef I might find the lyrics on this album interesting. But I haven’t done it so far and have no plans to do so in the future. So while I don’t dislike this music, it does not resonate with me and is definitely not something that I needed to hear. And I know the names Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. but I have never heard of Jeru the Damaja before today and will not care tomorrow. I like the track Mental Stamina.
b o r i n g
crappy rap
I found it repetitive and uninteresting, sorry not sorry. It's not the worst thing I've ever heard by ANY means, but compared to the other albums on the 1001 list it's pretty low I don't think anybody would care about hip hop if it didn't come primarily from black people.
This is a new artist and new music for me. Jeru the Demaja has some good beats, and is a talented rapper with some clever rhymes. Unfortunately, I don't want to listen to the content of the tracks. Many of the tracks I did not like, but there was one track that clarified that this whole album gets 1 star.
Kind of similar to almost every early 90's rap album included on this list so far. Largely anonymous and forgettable in my opinion 1.5/5
Lots of misogyny in their despite what he claims. Like the minimal backing music,
nope
A couple of tracks were OK but this is really not the sort of music ( if you can call the rest of it music ) that appeals to me. 1*
Cacophonous and thoroughly discordant, lyrically confused; can't even get misogyny right. absolute shit
Wie so häufig bei hip-hop belanglos und von Track zu Track immer anstrengender. Nach dem 6 oder 7 habe ich die Songs zum Ende hin übersprungen.
Not a fan….
What's the hype about this one? I don't really get it. The instrumentation is incredibly frustrating and the lyricism feels pretty basic. The keys are enough reason to turn off any song of this that comes up. I don't really care for any of the hooks either.
More unlistenable hip hop garbage. This genre does nothing for me and I’m struggling to find any differences or stand outs among the different artists to date. Still listening to each track and trying to be objective while staying loyal to this process but it will take a serious hip hop album to raise more than 2 stars for me. I’m listening to these albums in the morning and I’m not irritable then. Maybe I’m being harsh or maybe I expected more of these albums to talk to me earlier in the list
Bah, uninspiring
very 90s rap. not so great tho
Not particularly interesting
Not my thing.
Nonsense
No thanks
I'm a big hip hop fan, and jeru has a revered reputation, but it's pretty shite. Decent beats at times but nothing grabs you. One for the purists... 2.5/10
What the actual hell was that
No es lo mío. Se me hizo muy cuesta arriba. Nada me llama la atención.
Nothing but noise. No thanks
Not my cup of tea
Terrible - not my style at all
Too old, I guess...
I'm confused. How is this supposed to be worth listening to?
I liked absolutely nothing about this album, for which I must congratulate the contributors. I can usually find some redeeming feature. A song here or there will perk my interest. But this has none of that. Quite a feat.
Not a fan, no songs I liked. 0/5
