Couple of great songs but mostly filler
Liking the slower Elvis songs. First time to go through an Elvis album and I can see the lasting appeal.
I’d go back to it in the right mood
I don't have a ton of experience listening to Elvis, but his voice is damn near angelic. His ability to inflect the emotion of the song is second to none. Its probably for these reasons that this version of "Long Black Limousine" became so famous. "Only The Strong Survive" and "I'm Movin' On" are my personal favorites after listening to this.
It’s better than I expected! I liked the opening track and the variety of the album. Some slow crooner tracks and some uptempo, glitzy rock and roll.
None specifically grabbed me but they are all listenable. Pretty killer stuff and should revisit.
A delightful rainy morning listen
Elvis has such a lovely voice. It's great just how many songs are packed into this rather short album, and with a decent amount of variety. In the Ghetto back to back with Suspicious Minds was the highlight for sure.
This album has my all time favorite Elvis song (Suspicious Minds) so it gets an extra star just for that. The rest of it is exactly what you'd expect... which definitely isn't bad.
There’s better music on this album than the singles
It's the fucking King and he's feeling funky. A mix of soul, R&B and country. Elvis owns it. Best Tracks: Wearin' the Loved On Look; Only The Strong Survive; In The Ghetto
Quite good
Not a bad start to the album. It somehow has an old feel but a modern beat at the same time. Always liked Elvis songs and has been sung for as long as I can remember. It’s overall a solid album. Not one songs is bad and it’s almost like a flow of themes from one song to another. Guess that’s why they called him the King. Definitely an album to listen to or play while you’re doing stuff or just ant a soundtrack for the day.
A good elvis album to put on
Elvis the rhinestone years. Actually I like this period in his music although he does have a penchant for the melancholy.
Surprisingly good! And quite unlike most of the Elvis music I’m familiar with - less poppy, more serious.
2 tracks to die
4/5 Relaxing balade
Omdat t elvis is.
Sounds pretty good, but yet again I was not in the right mood for this, having discovered a new progressive death metal band on the same day...
Gracias a los dioses aliens por The King of Rock n' Roll
Solid Elvis.
Enjoyable. Would definitely play it again
3.5
Elvis is rockin’ all the way through here. He sounds revitalized and excited about this new music. His voice is in great shape and the new band make things exciting to listen to.
Great Album! Great Song and Singer. Unfortunately, he didn't write any of these songs himself. (8/10) Favourite Tracks: I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms), After Loving You , Suspicious Minds
Thoroughly enjoyed it — twice. Honorable mention for “Wearin’ That Loved On Look.”
Not what I expected from Elvis. I mostly his hits and so I was pleasantly surprised by this more country/soul album. Not being that familiar with the genre I would say it reminds me of Orville Peck, who, of course, must have been greatly influenced by this sound. I may need to explore this genre more...
Unexpectedly hip. Gotta listen to more Elvis.
Suspicious Minds

Very smooth album. Flows well together. A few standout tracks
elvis is a simp but a vibe. i enjoyed this way more than i expected
Great Elvis voice perfect combine with guitar melodies. The album fuse slow and melodic tracks with driving and fast songs.
Good music, I've always liked Elvis. Not his very best ones, but a couple of nice songs on here such as In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds and Don't Cry Daddy.
I'm not the biggest Elvis fan but was a really good album, worth 4 stars for In the Ghetto alone.
Well, I didn’t expect this, but I kinda like this stuff. Adding to the library for sporadic listening.
.
The Elvis hits!
Nice easy listening Rock with country/blues overtones AND its Elvis. Most of the songs were pleasantly forgettable, but I enjoyed listening to the hits ‘In the Ghetto’ , ‘Gentle on my Mind’ and especially ‘Suspicious Minds’. I was impressed with the backing band throughout and a little surprised when I read it wasn’t the famous Tennessee Two’ who were his original band. Bass player Tommy Cogbill was really good, and the Wikipedia rabbit hole says he also played on a lot of other great 1960s music. 4 stars for the King!
So totally surprised at how uplifting this was. Have never really listened to much Elvis but thoroughly enjoyed this.
Surprisingly enjoyable
Way better than I anticipated, and his vocal range really impressed me. My favorite tracks were Suspicious Minds (that's my fav Elvis song tho), Gentle on my Mind, In the Ghetto, and I'll Hold you in my Heart
Solid, great voice and character. Wouldn't listen to it every day tho
Great Voice. Okay music.
4.2 - So many great songs, so much soul. \"Long Black Limousine\", \"In the Ghetto\", \"Don't Cry Daddy.\" It's a testament to Elvis's talent as a singer that these songs don't come off as sappy to my jaded ear. The lyrics and musical arrangements sound like something from a soap opera but he sings them with such conviction. I actually feel emotional listening to \"Mama Liked the Roses\" - I don't know many singers that could pull that off.
Some cheesy background vocals but overall solid and holds up v well. Lots of keepers
Enjoyable album
He sounds like slim shady
Ameeeerica and ameeeeerica
Mis favs: "Only the Strong Survive", "Power of My Love" y "Mama Liked the Roses". 8.5/10
I like Elvis but he's not my favorite from the era and this album doesn't have many of my favorite songs on it.
Got a kick out of this - I forgot how wild Elvis' careers shifted over the decades. A real Icarus. Doesn't have all the hits, but I think it captures his essence well and shows you what you need from him.
After Presley's 1960 return from military service, his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, shifted the focus of the singer's career from live music and albums to films and soundtracks.[2] In March 1961, he performed what would become his last live concert for the next eight years: a benefit for the construction of the USS Arizona Memorial at Boch Arena in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.[3] During the first half of the 1960s, three of Presley's soundtrack albums reached number one on the pop charts and a number of his most popular songs were from his films, including 1961's "Can't Help Falling in Love" and 1962's "Return to Sender".[4] After 1964, Parker decided that Presley should only record soundtrack albums. He viewed the films and soundtracks as complementary, with each helping to promote the other.[5] As it turned out, the commercial success of Presley's films and soundtracks steadily diminished (Paradise, Hawaiian Style; Easy Come, Easy Go; Speedway),[4] while he was increasingly disappointed with the quality of his work.[2] From 1964 to 1968, Presley had just one top-ten hit: "Crying in the Chapel" (1965), a gospel number recorded in 1960. Only one LP of new material by Presley was issued: the gospel album How Great Thou Art (1967), which won him his first Grammy Award in the Best Sacred Performance category.[4] In 1968, Colonel Parker arranged a deal with NBC for a Christmas television special starring Presley in front of a live audience. Parker originally planned to have Presley sing Christmas carols only, but producer Steve Binder convinced the singer to perform songs from his original repertoire. The high ratings received by the special and the success of its attendant LP re-established Presley's popularity.[6] During the making of the special, Presley said to Binder: "I'll never sing another song that I don't believe in, I'm never going to make another movie that I don't believe in."[7] As part of his decision to refocus on music rather than film, Presley decided to record a new album.[
this was a great album, since I only really ever listened to the classic Elvis songs. would totally add this into a chill mix playlist.
It’s not just Elvis that is magical it is the band - man- those cats can play!
Pretty good, Favorite track- Suspicious Minds
Not entirely up my alley but it's really soothing to listen to. Carries the nostalgic mood of a by-gone era of music, tbh I'd probably put this on as background music.
Came in with very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. His band sounded really good and his vocals matched the tone of the songs quite well.
He da man, that voice does things to ye. Sounds incredible, and there's a sexy cover of Gentle On My Mind.
Solid Elvis, I think this starts to show a more individual voice than the last one I listened to.
Really liked it. Loved the country, soul vibe. Bit of a gospel feel. Incredible talent, never listened to a whole album from Elvis.
There's lots of bad Elvis. This is good Elvis.
It's effin elvis
Good stuff
Long Black Limousine
timeless classic 7/10
1969. Key Songs: Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, Any Day Now
Much better than I expected. Didn't realise Suspicious Minds was by Elvis. Kentucky Rain was pretty fantastic.
Elvis is always good.
gritty...
i think this was the first time i searched up "elvis presley" on spotify. it was pleasanter than i expected.
Not my favorite, but is good.
6/10
The second half of the album was better than the first, but overall a good album.
Better than i thought
Saved a few longs to listen to later. Wasn't really in the mood but will be re-listening later on. Generally not a big fan of Elvis as a guy so... kinda influenced my feeling on receiving this album first.
It is Elvis Presley.
great collage of Elvis tunes
I'm not the biggest Elvis fan, but this was enjoyable enough to listen to
Kind of boring. No edge. Feels like watching a boring sitcom from the past century. Still "good" music, qualitywise
Worthy inclusion, couple of his all timers, just doesn’t do much for me
Always love elvis but a lot of this was generic elvis
#167/1001 🇺🇸 I never think of Elvis as an album artist. For me he has recorded some of the best singles ever but there are elements of this record that fall well behind. In The Ghetto on the other hand is a magestic tune and undoubtedly the strongest track here. Best tracks: Only the Strong Survive, Long Black Limousine, In the Ghetto.
I was never a fan of his stuff I heard on the radio growing up in the 70s, but this is surprisingly good
Overall: 6/10 Wow, late era Elvis is really not that great. I enjoy a lot of it, Elvis sounds great on this album and the slow songs are pretty good, but the production is mediocre and the songs overall just aren't amazing. I'll stick to early Elvis. Fav Song: It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'
so elvis tried to make a comeback. but hes square. and i dont think that this is that a good album. btw nick cave's debut single is a cover of in the ghetto and i know that hes an elvis fan but i just dont see why he decided to cover this mid song. 3/5
idk it's a versatile vocal performance for sure, but the band and the mixing/mastering are very inconsistent in terms of quality and the songwriting isn't exactly awe-inspiring
I had only known In the Ghetto prior to today’s listen. I want to say I love the bluesy soul of the album but it’s Elvis, of course there’s bluesy soul.. this just can’t be peak Elvis.. album is fine..
This is music created by Elvis Presley. Checking back in after almost a decade with the King to find his sound a little more polished, songs a little more refined, and a couple of tracks that caught my ear.
This was interesting as a historical exercise at least; I am not sure if I have ever listened to an Elvis song all the way through until now. Long Black Limousine was a standout but the rest is not my jam.
Actually better than I thought it was going to be. Quite blusey in places.
Didn't do much for me, but interesting to find out Cartmans ghetto song was actually him just singing Presley
Pretty good. Elvis is a decent enough listen.
I liked some of the songs but "in the ghetto" is such a crazy song. Obviously the 50's were a different time, but oof. I need to do more research on other responses to the song. I liked the song "Suspicious Minds" the most.
Listen, I already got "Elvis Presley" by Elvis Presley, so everything after is just going to be a downgrade. This one is definitely much less energetic, but it's still good. I enjoyed it but started falling asleep about halfway through. 6/10.
fine
No wonder why Lilo loved him but it’s weird to listen to his songs after Priscilla movie album score 7.1/10
Ist halt elvis für 50 Minuten 3/5
Good old Elvis, kinda nice album, with a few classic, stand out trax
Enjoyed more than I thought I would enjoy elvis
A bit boring on the first half. 6/10
Probably the least good Elvis album I’ve gotten so far but it’s still Elvis
I liked it but not sure I could listen to it more often than once
Better than the early stuff but still not a fan. Obvious stand-out tracks are In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds
Never been a fan of Elvis Presley's style of singing, so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it. I wouldn't say that I did enjoy it, per se, but it also wasn't unpleasant. Mid- to low-tier 3/5
Um… it’s Elvis! He’s got the baritone. But… In the Ghetto and Don’t Cry Daddy are… so cringey. I mean I appreciate the sentiment, but… this whole album almost strikes me as a LasVegas parody in a film. As if it were a foreshadow of the Elvis to come. Can’t. Go. Higher. Than… 3 3 Boolean: True, I suppose, cause it’s Elvis!
It's another showing from Elvis, and thus one too, is pretty good. It still sounds approximately like Elvis, but in 1969, so there's a slightly more modern rock/country/blues thing here. But these songs *are* generally good. Gentle On My Mind is a fantastic song, though I do prefer Glen Campbell's recording. And In The Ghetto has aged weirdly, just because of Elvis' legacy, but it is good, and does possess at least a little self awareness. Anyways, even though this does feel a little more mature (or at least palatable to modern ears), this is still an Elvis album. This isn't really a bad thing, but you know how you feel about it, and it's pretty "your mileage may vary".
elvis... he was okay
good
Very classy, reminds me of sitting in an old classic bar in New York sipping on dirty martinis. Could definitely get repetitive. Elvis has a beautiful voice.
not his best but he is classically the King
6/10
I’m not an Elvis fan but many of these were good
Elvis is the worst part of all these songs
Ugh I'm really not an Elvis fan but some of the songs were really catchy. The band completely carries him here
Honestly, much better than expected
It’s a perfectly decent listen and he sounds good backed with a more ‘southern-soul’ style band. But ultimately I don’t listen to Elvis by choice and like the other Elvis, he has too many albums here.
I’ve never listened to an entire Elvis album before. It was about what I expected. Probably not something I’d listen to on the regular. Maybe I’ll change my mind as I immerse myself in more older albums. I appreciate Elvis for his place in music history. It’s interesting to hear music produced before rock and country had diverged so much. There is other music from the same year that I do like a lot that had progressed much further towards a more modern sound.
Honestly expected a lot more out of this
Elvis may be the king but I've found that his output can be very hit or miss for me. There are some true classics here but there are also plenty of songs of his I've never heard before and likely won't remember tomorrow.
Feels very Vegas
I suspect the only reason this makes the list is that this was the first “real” album for Elvis after 18 generally lousy (even though Blue Hawaii was the first album I ever bought and had a few great tracks in it) cash cow soundtrack albums from 1961-1969 that his manager forced him to do to go along with the similarly lame movies. In the Ghetto and Suspicious MInds (the latter is only on the reissue) are great tracks, fun to sing along to. They alone make this a three.
ta bien, pero bastante monótono
Some classic Elvis on here. Highlights: "Only The Strong Survive", "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road" and "Suspicious Minds"
Rock ‘n roll underrated by me; very nice groove music, should make a playlist with some of these songs in it (like a morning groove, cleaning playlist). However, lot of the same vibes and don’t think I’d listen to it for long periods of time.
This is my first Elvis album on the Generator, so I need to pay some respects. I see his life, music and performances as an astounding and extraordinary set of phenomena. (Even his after-life is extraordinary, eg 'earnings' by his estate...) The USA in which he started out is kinda hard for me to imagine (though it was not all that long ago), I try to comprehend what he stood for as his career took off, it is sadly too easy to comprehend something of how he ended up. All that said, sad fact is, I'm not that into his music in general. I tried to give this album an open-minded (open-eared?) listen, but it doesn't do much for me. I get that there's "Memphis sound" on this album, that's reasonably appealing, at least as far as the backing tracks go. But the recording and mix are offputting - the lead vocals would be mesmerising in themselves (that unmistakeable style), but are wallowing in heavy reverb, while everything else is crystal clear (but even the stereo separation is weird). And the lyrics are somewhat offputting (with the exception of In the Ghetto - where my little freakout is at the footnote that Presley was worried this song would put off his fans?!). The detailed account of the recording of the album is also offputting, for the number of erstwhile movers, shakers and grifters hanging around, apart from the talents of the composers, arrangers and musicians involved. Overall, this album seems a very long way from where my tastes are at. (The 'legacy edition' includes Suspicious Minds, which I do find appealing, but I put it to one side as not part of the album in question.) Overall, for me this album is Okay, 6/10.
My word his voice is molasses. It’s honey dripping. It’s sensuality and masculinity and soul. The songs? What songs? I noticed some blues, some perhaps tired-by-1969 prime Elvis rock diddies, a little of the unfortunate melodious flourishes of the day. But Elvis in my ear? Yes please.
We sang Elvis songs in my elementary music class--stuff like Jailhouse Rock and Hound Dog. One of my favorite Christmas songs is Blue Christmas because I love how cheesy Elvis sings it. This is a long way of saying that I am neither an Elvis lover or hater. Elvis just is. This album was better than I thought it would be, but I don't think it was all that great. Seemed to lack a point of view other than "Elvis sings a bunch of songs." And the songs weren't particularly exciting. They seemed heavy on a false sense of nostalgia. There are probably better Elvis albums out there. This was all very meh. 3 stars.
I don’t listen to Elvis, but I can see from this album why he was so popular; there are some good tunes in here. Some stand outs to me were “Wearin’ That Loved On Look”, “Long Black Limousine”, & “Suspicious Minds”.
First song has very funky vibes, and is just a really fun listen and I think a great opener. I feel instantly pulled in. Second song, has kind of that jazz vibe. Talking mixed with some singing. I can see why they call Elvis a culture vulture. It sounds like the backing vocals are done by black women as well. Power of my Love sounds like exactly what I'd expect to hear on a Las Vegas strip. It's crazy how much influence Elvis had over the showtune sound, while taking so much from black culture.
Much better than I expected, think I view Elvis as a bit of a punchline but I can see why he was so popular
suck it up and listen to ts josh
Es un buen disco, aguante elvis
Though I usually find Elvis Presley deeply corny, this wasn’t too bad.
“HE’S WHITE??!!??” Anyway, enjoyed but probably won’t come back
Fantastic, lush orchestra, and incredible albeit repetitive vocals. I felt like once the initial novelty of his vocals wore off, it got a little tedious to listen to Still, very cute and good!
Good album to half listen to. Late era Elvis, nothing revolutionary here.
Sounds like Elvis.
Tuntuu Lana del rey coquette las vegas
Exactly what you expect. Enjoyed it as much as I ever enjoy elvis. Which is not enough to choose to listen to it.
Always thought I don’t like Elvis. Cruise ship karaoke in a jumpsuit. This one wasn’t the cheese fest I was expecting. Likely won’t be back but I enjoyed it.
Didn’t love the Ghetto song
Pretty good, Never been the biggest Elvis fan but this was good.
Elvis is whatever
It's Elvis. He can be cheesy, but he still has a pretty classic sound that brings on the nostalgia.
Not a fan but good
Previously had the Elvis Is Back album on this list, which I was way more impressed with - even though it was mostly covers. The only real song that spoke to me was In the Ghetto, but the rest were quite dull. Not even Elvis' voice could compensate for that, sadly. Mid 3.
I have a hard time getting excited by Elvis albums. His voice is great but the albums always feel kind of disjointed and it feels more like a collection of singles than anything else. This album is no different. It has a big country feel with some soul thrown in there for good measure. It’s a decent chill listen but nothing to write home about. At the end “In the Ghetto” finishes the album and I remember why Elvis has the reputation he does. 3 star.
"In the Ghetto" & "Suspicious Minds" are really load bearing tracks here, propping up an otherwise somewhat mediocre assortment of standard country cuts 3.5/5
I kind of like some of Elvis’ early stuff. But after a point it goes downhill. This album was still surprisingly decent but still a bit lackluster
I don’t love Elvis, but this was good.
Some solid tunes but largely uninspiring on the whole. A weak 3
To me he sounds distinctly non-Elvisy on a few of these tracks - hoarse and like he really needs a lemsip and a long lie down. But that's probably because here in the UK, the majority of Elvis we hear is early, powerfully voiced Elvis not this late stage version. Suspicious Minds is the big hit from this album, and I do like it, but I also already knew In The Ghetto and Mama Liked The Roses (which I don't hate despite the maximum schmaltz). My favourite bit of the parts I didn't know was the lyrics in Kentucky Rain that was akin to every telephone conversation I ever have with my Mum: "They said, "Yes, she's been here" But their memory wasn't clear Was it yesterday? No, wait, the day before" I do really like quite a lot of classic Elvis songs, but this was just middle of the road fine. Should really be a 2.5, but: 3/5
I liked this album listen from Elvis Presley! This album was more blues, country, and soul focused than his more rock focused songs which I enjoy more but I appreciate that he was trying something different with more story driven songs. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this album but it wouldn’t be one that I would return to anytime soon. ‘In the Ghetto’ and ‘Suspicious Minds’ are standout tracks for me!
é o ken humano
Would I listen again: not purposefully putting it on but in the background it would be ok It’s fine. I just didn’t find it super interesting and his voice is not my fave
Lekker
more of a jam than i anticipated
p170. 1969. 3 stars. Recorded right on the cusp of the change from burnt out rocker to Vegas cabaret. Veers from the brilliant to a syrupy overproduced mess.
lord have mercy
I hate to say it but as much as Elvis does have a lot of very same-y and repetitive music in his discography, he does also have quite a bit of really solid music. From Elvis in Memphis happens to be another full album of that killer material and I don't think it is mind-blowing but it certainly gets the job done! Elvis shows off his charisma in a way that feels a lot more captivating than some of his early childish work and later repetitive slop he would make. From Elvis in Memphis actually feels genuine to a degree, as you can hear an effort being made to make something worth while even if it isn't a legendary output. This is a nice album all things considered but still a far cry from my favorite Elvis project.
Elvis. Always one of those artists for whom their legendary cultural status overshadowed their actual musical contribution. I thought this was a fine album. He does have a captivating vocal style at times, but at others it veered hard into schmaltzy lounge territory. As the original American heartthrob Elvis has a huge legacy, but again I don't think a ton of it is actually his music. I'm going 3/5 on this album because it wasn't bad to listen to, but he really didn't bring anything new to the table.
Pretty good - a little repetitive.
Pretty average actually
I appreciate that this list has a no compilation rule. The Rolling Stone list is particularly egregious in that respect. However, some artists, while very important, are much better served by a singles comp. Elvis is a clear example of this. Most of the tracks on here are perfectly fine but forgettable. The only ones I really vibed with were the hits, most of them which are technically bonus tracks. I'll stick with the greatest hits.
Some nice jaunty bits in the beginning, but it couldn't hold me.
22/04/2026 Sorry Elvis, this wasn't one of your best. Next time, maybe. Spotify listeners: 22.4 million
Established Elvis so perhaps not so exciting but led me to make a note to myself to acquire a cowboy hat and wear it in an American bar while listening to this album
Classic crooning Elvis: a classic sound.
Not an Elvis fan but recognized a few songs (Suspicious Minds is so good). It didn’t take long for me to note how great the backing band and vocals are. Enjoyed that more than Elvis himself.
I really like Elvis. His music and career can have a lot of criticisms, but I find listening to him quite enjoyable and varied. This one is a popurri of everything, a show of many moods and emotions. But that makes it more akin to a "Best Hits" album than something more cohesive you could find on other artist. So, I guess it's not for everyone in that sense.
Day 4 of 1001 albums. Honestly, I wasn't looking forward to this one but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm the youngest of 5 so I was brought up listening to Elvis. So it was "familiar". Easy to listen to and a couple of classics. 5/10
As good as the arrangements and production and performances are, it feels like half of these songs are just not that good on first listen at their core, but many of the others are great, so I'm hoping the rest eventually grows on me .
Trevligt och familjärt! Ingen omvälvande upplevelse kanske men ändå en härlig lyssning. Stark trea
I liked it a lot but definitely not something i would listen to on a day to day. iconic tho
Music for squares
IDK man this shit mid as hell, sounds like a white picket fence, suburbs home.
B Wearin' That Loved On Look 4 Only The Strong Survive 4 I'll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms) 3 Long Black Limousine 4 It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin' 3 I'm Movin' On 3 Power Of My Love 3 Gentle On My Mind 3 After Loving You 3 True Love Travels On A Gravel Road 3 Any Day Now 5 In The Ghetto 4 Any Day Now is one of my all time favorites. Other than that, not the most amazing album, but it’s definitely a vibe throughout.
Nothing special except for Suspicious Minds.
Taattua Elvistä. Ei sisällä hittejä. Viimeinen kappale sydäntäsärkevä. Yhtenäinen albumi.
Favorite Track: Only the Strong Survive
He has a sound all his own. Gentle on my mind is nice.
I was amazed how much hate this album got—fat Elvis, overproduced, cheesy—and yet it has three of his best songs: In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, and Kentucky Rain. Is it the last good Elvis album? Yes. Are those the only three songs on the album worth hearing? Sadly, yes. There’s a reason why I’ve always stuck to his greatest hits. That said, long live the king.
Good listen. Really enjoyed about half of these songs, the other half was meh. 6.75/10 Top song Suspicious Minds (followed closely by wearin' that loved look on)
I was expecting to dislike this. Judging the cover I thought I was going to get bloated Vegas Elvis. Turns out this is an enjoyable country soul album. Two classic tunes in The Ghetto & Suspicious MInds push the final score from 2.5. to a 3.
*1969. *Goodness this was depressing. Every song was mopey and sad. *Suspicious minds was the most uplifting song on the album. Sheesh. *Otherwise, it's standard Elvis faire - which is hard not to enjoy, even if he's being a sad sack. RATING - 6/10
Top : Power of My Love Flop : I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms)
ilk defa böyle bir albüm dinledim albüm eski Amerika'nın o country tarzı ben hiç hayatımda dinlemiştim sadeve filmlerdr görmüştüm bne beğendim ama açıp bunu dinliyim demem yani
Apart from the two hits, it has a lot of filler. Although, this is an album with a lot of charisma.
This is cool and all but I'm a Beatles guy.
Good but smaltzy
Decent album - has 2 of the few Elvis songs I actually like on it, but I still think he was overrated.
Nice music, 6,5/10
The king. Great story telling.
My 2nd Elvis album so far and, as with the first one, it's fine. Some songs I enjoyed and some that just passed me by, pretty average overall.
Nice album from the King of Rock’n’Roll. Few tracks added into my collection.
1. Wearin that loved on look: Buen tema, no me parecio nada del otro mundo. Tipo blusito piola. 5,5/10 2. Only the Strong Survive: Me gusto un poco mas que el anterior, mas blusito baladita. 6/10 3. I´ll Hold you in my Heart: Meh. No me disgustó, pero meh. 5/10 4. Long Black Limousine: Parecido al anterior 5/10 5. It Keeps Right on a Hurtin: Misma linea. 5/10 6. I´m Movin On: Más movidita me gusta apenitas más. 5,5/10 7. Power of My Love: Igual que la anterior o un poco menos quizas. 5,25/10 8. Gentle of My Mind: Meh. 5/10 9. After Loving You: 5/10 10. True Love travels on a gravel road: 5,5/10 11. Any Day Now: Me gusta un cachin más. 6/10 12. In the Ghetto: Me gustó un poco más, tipo baladita tranka, piola. 6,5/10 13. Suspicious Minds: Más "cuerpo" más piola. 7/10 14. Don´t cry daddy: Me gusta, buena baladita. 6,5/10 15. Kentucky Rain: Me gusto bastante. 7/10 16. Mama liked the roses: Buen cierre.
Kind of a mixed album. There’s some really good material here, Elvis’s voice and delivery are always excellent, however, some of these songs are just bad. Suspicious Minds is the best track for sure. About half the songs are prettt good.
This was my Nana's favorite artist, so it always brings me back to memories of her whenever I hear Elvis. The guy could belt it out and for a live album, the production is top notch.
I grew up in a home full of Elvis vinyl, so I find it tricky to either hate or rate Elvis. He’s basically musical wallpaper to me - familiar, ever-present, yet rarely given dedicated attention. This is yet another serviceable yet unexceptional example for me.
Calm and cool but nothing screamed something I'd wanna go out of my way to put on. General 3/5.
Elvis sounds pretty good--back to his rock, soul, country roots--and Memphis band is solid. He chose some good songs. Suspicious Minds is awesome.
Idk what to write: It's good but it's Elvis. or It's good but it's repetitive. Or maybe they're synonyms.
The first half of this didn't do much for me, to be honest, but man do I love Suspicious Minds.
i actually got through the whole damn thing. the music is nice enough. i do struggle to imagine a sincere elvis singing some of these songs though, like in the ghetto and dont cry daddy are so eye rollingly unaware
I can’t quite get away from the sense that Elvis is a bit of a tourist here. It’s not bad, I don’t think Elvis was capable of making anything bad, but I’m more taken with the musicianship of the Memphis Boys - esp. Reggie Young - and the various back-up singers.
2.8 2x
This list is making me like Elvis a whole lot less than I previously did. I like bluesy, rock n roll Elvis. I don't like Elvis the crooner. I did not enjoy this album.
Just realized that Eric Cartman has ruined In the ghetto for all eternity.
Sielt se Elvis sitte tuli. Ei ollu huono albumi vaikka en oo kyl elvistä kuunnellu sitte ollenkaan ennen tätä. Paras biisi varmaan: Any Day Now Arvosana: 3,25
it's all nice but nothing has really caught my ear
fine
i like kinda get it gentle on my mind a classic in all forms
Didn't manage to get all the way through it, may adjust my rating if I get back to it and finish. Not my favourite of Elvis, but it was still good.
Découverte. Bon album overall.
Fun listen and some classic songs. "Mama liked the Roses" was a find for me.
I've said it 3 times already, I'm not a fan of Elvis at all. The earlier albums are better, maybe something more like "Elvis Is Back". It's not bad, but it's not what you'd expect from such an important historical figure.
Ideaal ochtendplaatje op de achtergrond.
It feels harsh giving this a 3 but this kind of romantic crooning just kind of does nothing for me, Elvis in general does nothing for me. It’s not bad music by any stretch, I can totally see why people loved it at the time but I just don’t jam with this at all sorry (sue me).
There’s some really really good stuff in here where Elvis is at his best with that insane charisma, but then there’s also a fair amount of bluesy filler - for me he’s never really had a big classic record and is a greatest hits kinda guy, so this is a mixed bag
I've always disliked Elvis, but maybe I just dislike early Elvis? This wasn't bad at all.
Elvish laulantaa, ihan mukavaa.
Vanhan maailman livelevyt on kyllä hirmu kovia aina.
Yep. That's late era Elvis.
Blues, full of soul. A style unique to Elvis alone. Fav was 'any day now'.
The first time I heard this album I was quite captivated, but now a few listens after that, my enjoyment of this album has definitely dwindled; it just seems to be missing that little spark of magic.
Easy listen. I'm not the biggest fan of Elvis' crooning, but there are some well known hits on this one.
I still don’t quite get what all the fuss is about, but each album of his I’ve heard has been a little better than the last. This is probably the strongest so far, though it still doesn’t come close to being great for me.
Dang.. pretty good
Late Elvis definitely lost a step. I wouldn’t complain if this was on, but I doubt that I would choose it.
What we have here is Elvis singing poor quality songs that would probably have sounded outdated in 1969. There were a few great numbers in the late part of Elvis' career but only one is on this album unfortunately. He ought to have been allowed access to better song writers. Suspicious Minds is the only great track, In the Ghetto and Gentle on my Mind are ok. Lots of pretty awful fillers.
Honestly I was ready to write this album off in the first half but it really turned it around. Elvis has never really appealed to me for whatever reason and I wanted to give this an honest shot but by I'm Movin On I had almost given up. The second half completely flipped it for me. It's hard to say without deep diving the lyrics but it almost feels like the order of the album could've been adjusted and made it a better listen. Overall though, bad album saved from a lower rating by the last half or rather good album knocked down a bit by the first half.
yo second Memphis album this week. M-town represent. This is low-energy, superstar Elvis. Not bad, but it doesn't quite have the magic that made him great when he was younger. More Frank Sinatra than the Beatles.
very samey, not the Elvis I like. It's very distinct, but its also very musically boring.
Late career Elvis, but still belting out the ballads with his velvet voice The songs might not be as iconic as earlier albums, but we still get In The Ghetto, Dont Cry Daddy and Suspicious Minds in this collection An obvious must-have for Elvis fans
Curti conhecer.
Pretty good
Good album
Never loved Elvis. Most of this ain't bad, though.
I've been a little disappointed by the croony Elvis albums so far in the list but I feel he has a bit more swagger here and there's more variety in the songs. I still don't feel personally drawn to his singing voice and I've always maintained there's a firm ceiling on albums performed but not written by the listed artist, so it's a comfortable 3 but only a 3 nonetheless.
Suspicious Minds is a strong 5/5, but the rest of the album is only pretty good. Great basslines!
There are some good songs here but also some bad ones too. His voice seems exaggerated in a lot of this and I am pretty sure this is not his best stuff.
Good album... for Elvis. I like him very much, don't get me wrong. But this is one of those cases where the album is good, but you can tell it was probably bigger and hugger in its time. The context, the moment, the man himself, all of that carried it further than maybe the music alone would today. Solid voice, solid production, solid songs. But it didn't hit me the way it must've hit more during the release.
Indulgently Elvis!
Elvis's voice doesn't disappoint, but it's a little too simple for my prog-preferring taste.
A lot of this is in his crooner mode, wch can start to feel a little corny and is not my favorite, but the guy is a consummate entertainer and knows how to use that drawl in his voice.
Solid Elvis tracks. On headphones, there’s a noticeable placement of where the instruments are and how they’re panned. Not sure if I’m saying that right, but it adds a bit of depth I wasn’t expecting. 3.4/5.0
There’s too much here that is middle of the road to rate any higher but I enjoyed it. I’m Movin’ On is new to me and was a highpoint alongside the excellent Suspicious Minds. Not sure when I would choose to listen to Elvis but I will inevitably hear his songs as I have done many times before.
The king of rock? More like the king of 6/8. Rock ballads in that time signature seem to be his signature style. I don't know a lot about the history, but I think I've heard that Elvis has been resented for popularizing styles of music invented by Black people, especially because he became popular during a time which I imagine had high racial tension. The song about the ghetto seemed particularly insensitive, maybe? Still the quality of this album is undeniable and I enjoyed it. I was surprised to find some songs had bass playing that was very reminiscent of Motown, a couple of the songs had very active base lines in a high register, which I liked a lot, also the gospel choirs in the background are nice, and the instrumentation is generally very good. 6.5/10
It's between 3 and 4 stars on this one, and I feel a little bad about this, but I think I'll give it 3. This brings to mind another general question about the ratings we're giving here: is it just how much we like it, or, in a broader sense (not just for us, but for everyone), how "good" we think it is. I guess maybe a mix of the 2, but with an edge to the former? Anyway, ELVIS. Yeah, it's complicated (for me, anyway). I think I picked up some of Mombo's . . . disdain (?) for Elvis, probably most of all because so much of his success was from covering songs that were originally done by black singers. Over time, as an adult, I've come to like/appreciate (but not love) Elvis. I was glad for an opportunity to hear this album, in particular, as it's mostly new to me, but I've long heard/known about it. The only songs I knew before (I think) are "In the Ghetto," and "Gentle on My Mind" (but that song I knew the Glen Campbell original, which I think I prefer). Might be interesting to ask Granddad about his take on Elvis: Elvis was most successful in the mid/late 1950s, when Mombo and Granddad were teenagers. In the 60s, he was overshadowed by The Beatles (and many others), but this album was part of his late-60s "comeback." (He died prematurely in 1977, at age 42.) Pretty good stuff, and tempting to give it a 4, but I'll stick with 3.
Schmaltzy, but as good as schmaltz gets I find it really difficult to rate this... 7/10 feels right, so I can't decide between 3 and 4. I can't deny the greatness, and I find myself enjoying most of the songs, but I can't say its a favorite. It also feels unfair to rate Elvis without the aspect of live performance because that was such a large part of his brand
First non “hits” Elvis album I’ve listened too. Couple absolute classics on here like Suspicious Minds and Ghetto. Enjoyable but not a full standout in my mind 3/5 Fave song: Suspicious Minds (yeah I’m basic) also liked Any Day Now and Only the Strong Survive
I understand why Elvis was so popular, but I’ve never personally bought into the hype. I’ve never been a huge fan of his music or his voice, and I tend to prefer his earlier material, when there was more of a rock edge rather than the heavier soul influence heard here. At the end of the day, this just isn’t my bag. That said, it’s impossible to deny his massive impact and lasting influence on the music industry. 2.5 rounding up to 3 based on his impact.
Actually liked it much better than I thought I would. Enjoyable. Lots of tracks I have heard before.
Wasn't looking forward to the this one but it was actually quite good. I guess he wasnt called the king for nothing. 8/10
Listenable!
I think this album is much better than "Elvis Is Back". However, I don't think I would return to many of the tracks. Favourite tracks: 1. Suspicious Minds 2. In the Ghetto
I perhaps made the mistake of looking at the track list before listening (although as someone who only knows a small sample of Elvis’ work I’ll excuse myself). Had a couple of decent songs at the start but I found myself somewhat waiting around for In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds (the two songs I knew). Relatively middle of the road for the most part but Suspicious Minds is an incredible song and my favourite from Elvis, at least from what I’ve heard. So just for that the album gets a slight boost in its overall rating, without that I’d may be leaning more towards a 2.
I found this one way easier to listen to than his self titled. That was way too simple and repetitive from what I remember. This has at least a little more instrumentation to it and isn't really annoying.
Good single listen but I won’t re listen
My three favourite Elvis songs are on this album. It is one of his best and what I think of when I hear Elvis.
Had some good moments but I mostly zoned out. Nothing more to say
I’d rather this than Frank Sinatra. I listened through it twice in a row and, while I think it’s too long, I was entertained. Seriously, how does 50min feel so long? The album starts off pretty fun and upbeat, but ends on a real downer in “Mama Liked The Roses”. If this was an actual concert, that’s an awful way to send your crowd back out into the world. I do like that Hagstrom he’s got on the cover though.
Suspicious Minds, 5 stars, rest of the album, around 3 stars.
It’s elvis, definitely a nice listen. Suspicious minds! 3.5
yknow it could be worse Highlights: Only the Strong Survive, Power of My Love, Any Day Now
Fav: true love travels on a gravel road 3/5
All kind of the same after a while
Suspicious Minds is so good... the rest aren't tho
Just cheesy enough to be fun, just intricate enough to be interesting. This one is sneaky good, with Elvis fully embracing the new Nashville sound (even if it says Memphis on the label). Elvis as Glen Campbell is a good look and there's some absolutely killer tunes and arrangements here. It suffers from the Elvis of it all but as a document of where his sound could've gone if he had been healthier, this is a pretty cool record all told.
Känns lite blase inledningsvis, förutom andra spåret Only the Strong Survive. Men sen mot slutet kommer ett pärlband av bra spår, True love travels on a gravel road, Any day now, In the Ghetto, Suspicious minds.
Tätä sai kuunnella himassa lapsuudessa ihan tarpeeksi.
