Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Never really got round to listening the whole album, I tried on multiple occasions. The Ocean's 11 of an album. Maybe it's not meant to be listened to in whole. It's a trip fr.

More love, but less bold overall.

Not his best album in my opinion.

I don't really 'get' Jimi Hendrix; this is decent enough but nothing more. I'm not very familiar with the albums so perhaps one of the others will float my boat a little more.

not jimi's best but still so damn good

This was a little bit of a hot mess in my opinion. It’s still Jimi Hendrix, and he’s still a cool cat, but if felt too chaotic to really get into.

A classic by Jimi Hendrix but perhaps not my cup of tea. Some good songs though.

Hit & miss. Still haven't gelled with this album. Glad to be reminded of it, will give it more listens.

Cool, Love the guitar throughout the album. different feel to some of jimi's other LP's.

Not a lot of great moments. Castles Made of Sand and Little Wing are great though.

Little wing is amazing. The rest is merely good.

first couple songs really put you in a vortex if listened to with headphones. good album!

More of a mellow Jimi Hendrix vibe - got some great tunes but when I want to listen to Hendrix I’m looking to rock out a little more.

Jimi Hendrix is pretty good at guitar. There was a lot on here I hadn’t heard before. More straight ahead songs than I expected. The most well know ones have these massive solos that stand out but there’s a lot of good psych rock that’s not as solo heavy

I feel like I should like this more than I do. It’s good but nothing really gripped me. Somehow it wasn’t psychedelic enough

Kinda overrated. 3.0

I certainly appreciate Jimi’s talent but this was only so-so for me

Way more versatile a record than I thought. Solid songwriting keeps the blues fresh. Music for Clear skies 3.5/10

Jimmi Hendrix, legendary name, very skilled on the guitar. Unfortunately I'm really not a fan of psychedelic music I just don't really connect with it. I can tell that it's skillfully played, but it doesn't draw me in and pull me along, I always feel more like an outside observer Standouts Castles Made of Sand 3/5

He's a good one - the album just didn't capture my full attention. I tried with two listens, too :/ 3/5

Don’t think I had ever listened to a full Hendrix album before…enjoyed it.

Never heard the album before. Enjoyable listen. Starts off strange (didn't know Jimi was a Space Cowboy), has lots of variety. Little Wing is the standout, though it ends just as it's getting started.

Kova kepittäjä ja asiallinen levy.

Exp - fun fun fun intro, the audio going over both ears is cool. That was the whole song! Banging Up from the skies - this is cool, different to most things I listen to Spanish castle magic - yeah!!! Wait until tomorrow - don't love the chorus but love the bass and the drums Ain't no telling - this is fun !! Little wing - I like this! If 6 was 9 - don't like the voice in my right ear, bit spooky. Probably my least favourite on the album so far (and unfortunately the longest!), but that doesn't mean it's bad You got me floatin' - lil head bop to this Castles made of sand - this is alright! She's so fine - this had promise until the vocals came in. Not my vibe One rainy wish - not much to say about this, it's alright! The more I listen the less I like it Little miss lover - hmmmm Bold as love - better than the previous ones! Not really feeling anything from it though. The second half of the song is cool Much much much preferred the first half of this album. Was going to be a 4/5 before I hit the second half, now it's a 3/5. Enjoyed listening to it though!

You have to like Hendrix to like Hendrix - there's not a lot of middle ground. But are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland are all landmarks in the evolution of modern music.

I don’t love his vocals and I’d probably appreciate the lyrics a little more with some acid, but the guitar was slammin tho!

I don't know enough about what makes a guitarist great. So this album became background music. I find it dull overall. If it's on in some else's car, I'd listen. If it came on in my own car, I'd see what other options were available.

I don't play guitar so I don't really care about Hendrix as much as most. I mean seriously, people still cream their pants over this guy. Technically this is a pretty sound album. Great production, the blending of genres the use of stereo and what might be early sampling are all pluses. I just don't really like the songs. Most of the time it sounds like the rock n roll version of what you would hear in a spa. That just doesn't do it for me.

idk. not bad i just couldn’t get into it

Guitar guru doing guitar guru things.

Solid Jimi but not his best.

Jimi Jimi Jimi! As original as it gets.

Not nearly as good as their debut album. A few monster songs like Little Wing and Castles Made of Sand and Bold as Love, but the rest of the album is a bit pedestrian for the legend. 3.95

There's some very good moments here, but the overall experience was really quite bland. I only knew a couple of the tracks from this album before and neither of them are particular favourites of mine. I'm going to be kind and give 3 stars for the flashback to the Easy Rider soundtrack.

I love Jimi, but this is not his best work.

Good, but while a fan of his playing, not a fan of his writing

I enjoyed the album. He was legend already when he died at 26.

I preferred Are You Experienced over this album. I didn't dislike it but it didn't do much for me. Fave Track: Wait Until Tomorrow Rating: 3

The Jimi Hendrix Experience alright, it was auditory, sometimes not to my tastes but still interesting enough to keep me engaged. 2.8/5

Jimi is one of the best guitarists to ever do it. However, I don’t think he really shines in studio albums. There are some solid songs on here. There are also some duds, the musicianship is always good, but the songs themselves are not great. I’m sure even those not so good songs were amazing live though. To me that’s where Jimi really shined. He was a performer, watching old concert footage he is electric on stage, he commands the crowd. So yeah there’s some amazing songs on here, Spanish Castle Magic, Bold As Love, Castles, and the regrettably too short Little Wing. There’s also some decent songs, like One Rainy Wish, songs I don’t mind but wouldn’t go out of my way for. And then there’s some songs that don’t feel quite finished, or are finished and just don’t hit the mark. It’s a mixed bag.

Very nice

Pretty good.

Not great, not bad. Kind of forgettable. There are a few notable tracks, but for the most part, compared to Electric Lady Land or Are You Experienced? this isn't Jimi's best work.

My favorite by Jimi at the moment, though it’s not an easy listen

It's okay, again not something I'd opt to listen to on my own.

There is some great talent here. The hits on this album deserve their respect but I can’t say the same about all the other tracks. Overall, I would say that this is impressive for its time but I wouldn’t go back to it.

6/10 I had high hopes for this and that may be inflating the rating. I wouldn't seek this record out. Still has some moments of goodness. 6-14-2024

A strong 3 but the weakest of Jimi's albums

I expected to like this more than I did. Jimi is pretty incredible and I like his singing voice as well, but this album didn't really have any standout tracks that made me want more. I was pretty over the Woodstock vibe by the end. Little Wing is definitely the best here, and I also liked Wait Until Tomorrow and Castles Made of Sand.

C+ EXP 1 Up From The Skies 3 Spanish Castle Magic 3 Wait Until Tomorrow 3 Ain't No Telling 3 Little Wing 3 If Six Was Nine 3 You've Got Me Floating 3 Castles Made Of Sand 3 She's So Fine 3 One Rainy Wish 3 Little Miss Lover 3 Bold As Love 3 I'm learning that I'm not a huge fan of Hendrix.

Alright - neither here nor there really. 3.5?

Kinda the least of the first three JHE for me but still cool.

Some songs were noise, others were great

I really enjoyed this for the most part. Some songs were a bit forgettable, but others blew me away. All together, a great experience. 3.3/5 -> 3/5.

- this album is a technical marvel, both in the guitar playing and the production - there are so many details in production and songwriting, that make a listen enjoyable - the songwriting isn't really for me I suppose

Here's the thing about listening to Jimi albums in the modern day: he was throwing a lot of stuff at the wall, and a lot of it stuck. It changed how music sounded after. But some of it didn't and became that kind of navel-gazing drug-fueled stuff we associate with lava lamps and flower prints. So the album is a mix of absolute classics and stuff that comes across as fairly weird.

Guitar rock is really a thing, and this is a very good version of it, but man I've never really ... cared about Jimi? The hits are undeniable and the rest sounds like ... the same thing.

I was a little surprised that the second Jim Hendrix album was also his/their 2nd studio album, but now I realize that this collection contains *all* of Jimi Hendrix/Experience's studio albums, so not so surprising I suppose. A fun album, with more of a distinctive sound than just the great guitar playing on his/their first album, and it's fun to hear songs that got a fair amount of radio play-time in the years since. I do wish that songs like "Little Wing" were longer, though, as they seem *too* short to really develop as song. And I'm not sure I've ever heard "If 6 was 9" before, but I like it (and it's definitely long enough). A shame that we're already 2/3s through his music in this collection--he really did have a unique sound and style.

That’s 2, Mr Hendrix you have been good!

Loved it

Jimi is incredible and way ahead of his time. But this album is a mixed bag for me. The good songs are all timers. But there are plenty of songs on here I don't really care about hearing again. Which is kind of my take on most Jimi records. For me he is a greatest hits record artist. With all due respect.

I fucked up and didn't take notes while I listened today at work. I ran through it twice. First listen I wasn't really vibing but I started to hit a groove with it the second time through. I think I should listen to this at home sometime where I can be a little more careful with my listening. 3/5 for now.

Not his finest album

I thought I had heard and had seen every Hendrix record there was out there. Guess not, even with a few known songs on this album. As far as a review goes, I hate to say it so much but again, this whole album is exactly what you’d expect from this artist. Beautiful, innovated guitar playing, solid musicianship from the rest of the band. It’s not hit after hit but aside from “Exp” all the songs are hovering around the hit category. Choice Cut: Little Wing

noisy but i mean NICE 3

I really enjoyed the other Hendrix album, this one just didn't do a lot for me.

Enjoyable, nicely paced.

Yeah this was chill

Honestly wasn't that impressed with this one compared to his other work.

не откладывается у меня Джими, даже легендарный литл уинг. но норм)

Not for me!

Little Wing // Bold as Love //

Decent

Hendrix is amazing, obv. But this album is a bit much for me, personally.

I didn't like the intro or some of the more psychadelic sounds, but there's also some good songs. Some groovy drumming and Jimi Hendrix' guitar. Little Wing is too short though.

Some songs were questionable

That sure was a jimi hendrix experience

Sometimes I was transported to a mid-west American bildungroman roadtrip scene. Sometimes I heard genius. Mostly the former. If I had a white pick up truck, a red flannel, and a baseball cap - and my kids had just left me - this would be my jam. I appreciated the jazzier stuff, but not a huge rock fan.

Progressive, bit ultimately felt like a testing ground for later songs

My second jimi in two days. Once again revolutionary and once again not really my favorite. Favorite Track - Little Wing

NOT his best....

Ik waardeer de gitaarkunst van Jimi Hendrix, maar verder is dit niet mijn muziek. Er wordt te veel gebruik gemaakt van left/right, en het eerste "nummer" is gewoon 2 minuten herrie.

3 - I didn't like it as much as Electric Ladyland, but it's a cool and technically impressive album. I don't really have much to say about it though.

Jimi is a guitar god. He truly unique, a style only he could play. I don’t think Axis: Bold As Love is a mind blowing album. It’s good to very good. Little wing is the only undoubtable masterpiece. 7.8/10

Free, creative, experimental but the songs still have a clear direction (good storytelling). I could hear some of the Beatles in it and the attitude of performing heavily reminded me of Pearl Jam. Listening to it made me realize how influential he was as an artist. At some point during the album I got kinda annoyed of the unpredictable movement of the guitar, the vocals or other sounds constantly switching their panning.

Good and groovy, don't have much to say sorry

I appreciate Jumi’s contributions and admire his skill and performances, but I don’t love his albums. Little Wing will always blow me away.

Little Wing is one of my favorite songs. I’ve always respected Jimi Hendrix from a guitar playing perspective, but I haven’t been crazy about his music. Few hits on here that I love but I don’t care to relisten to most of the deep cuts.

I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. There are Hendrix projects I like more, I guess. Maybe my expectations were too high. Even still, I'm glad I've heard this. Highlights: Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, She's So Fine

I feel it should be better than it is but its not a patch on Electric Ladyland

I've never been a psychedelic rock girl, not just because I can't really smoke, but because I find most of it dorky, pseudo-intellectual, and self-indulgent. Even so, I can't deny that the talent of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Jimi obviously had charisma, but all three are tight as hell. There are moments where the skill displayed here just brings me back to when I was 12, first learning guitar, and everything noodly and wonky sounded mind blowing. And then there's the classic high-points, the dense blues-based ballads and hard rockers. It's an album that demands respect. But that's also all I can really give it, too. I respect it a lot. I know it's, technically-speaking, a showcase. But while my 12 year old brain likes the virtuoso noodling licks, my adult brain knows this is trait and self-indulgent flash. It's made worse by Jimi's cringey lyrics. And then there's the blues-based songs, which i find immensely forgettable – including the classics like "Castles Made of Sand" and "Little Wing." I think the moments that sound closest to their debut – the hard rock cuts that are pretty straight-forward with flash segments that don't engulf the song – are easily the high water marks for me, but those moments are basically nonexistent here. Overall, this feels like the limitation of Hendrix's legacy; for all his pure talent, he was still a product of his time, and those times were...incredibly stupid and self-indulgent. Even down to the cover, that Boomer attitude reigns supreme on this album, and it's the exact attitude that turns me away from psychedelic rock in general. Even when it's performed by some of the best, I think this kind of music just will never do it for me. I respect this a lot, but I know the highest personal praise I can give it is apathy. I'm not looking forward to a large piece of this challenge, clearly.

Certainly we were robbed of some amazing music when he died, and I love Jimi, but I don't think "Axis: Bold as Love" was particularly impressive or innovative even for 1967. "Little Wing" is such a beautiful song, and I really love "Castles Made of Sand." "Spanish Castle Magic," "If 6 Was 9," and "Bold as Love" are solid tracks, but the other 8 are absolute filler and at times even annoying. As far as albums go, "Are You Experienced" is a lot better in my opinion, but albums just weren't Hendrix' strength, anyway.

bien à écouter de A a Z bonne ambiance

Never heard most of these songs before, but Hendrix’s sound is so identifiable. Was he high all the time…?

Not very memorable.

This is my first proper exposure to Jimi Hendrix. Gotta say, it’s interesting, but probably not my thing. Impressive guitar work, I mean it is what he is known for. Some catchy songs, but I felt I did do a lot of waiting for it to be over. There are probably some songs worth revisiting, and I admit this was a clearly influential sound

Great guitar work as expected, but a little slow at parts. Favorites were Spanish Castle Magic, If 6 was 9, and Bold as Love

I like the way the drums sound all through this album. Some songs are better than others. Favorites are Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, and Bold As Love

Jimi being Jimi. He’s really experimenting with his sound here. Lots of echoes and overdubs.

The guitar sounds nice

Yeah, it's just not as good as Electric Ladyland, but that's an incredibly high standard to live up to. It's still a decent album, but without the standout tracks that made some of his other work so memorable - I really like Castles Made of Sand, hadn't heard Little Wing before and that's really good but not iconic in the same way as his other work. The rest is all fine, coherent, but not spectacular. A high 3/5.

I get why others ranked it high. Liked at the beginning but got a little boring for me.

Liked this better than some of his other albums. This one was less noisy / noodley in between the songs. There are a couple of cold stone bangers in here. I don't know if I can hear Jimi, but I enjoyed listening to him.

Normal.

Unpopular opinion: Hendrix is kind of overrated. Undeniable skill on the guitar and great vocals, but putting it all together and making albums kinda not great

As Austin Powers would say…”yeah baby”

I am a pretty big Jimi Hendrix fan, but I have to admit, this album is a small disappointment. Except for "Little Wing" there is not much on this record that I enjoyed. The slightly spiritual style didn't really resonate with me. It wasn't bad, but sadly just normal. Probably one of the duds in his short career. In my opinion, of course.

Okay - ich glaube ich mag die musik einfach nicht

3.5 bold as love absolutely cranks

very cool

I get he’s talented. But I’m not a fan of his style of music. It’s all over the place.

Enjoyed- probably needs more focused listening - lyrics interesting

It's alright. Jimi knows how to play, but it's not speaking to me. It's quite stop start, and the songs are quite chaotic. There's not enough flow for me, and not enough to latch onto.

C’est vraiment un damier de chansons supers chill entrecoupées par la distorsion du cris des damnés. Ça reste cool, modérément

Jimbo. Cool psychedelic rock. He sounds like his peers and each song is a bit of a journey.

There are some flashes of brilliance, of course. The outro on Bold as Love is especially amazing. Mitch Mitchell is in FINE FORM on this one, too. Hendrix always leaves me wanting a little more. Always kind of too loose. Great album overall.

Solid album but half baked. So many songs just Peter out after a minute or two. Little Wing is still incredible (although Stevie Ray Vahn's cover is my favorite version of it).

The album started out on a strange note but got better as it progressed.

Was a fine listen, he was an amazing guitarist but his genius was his live performances. The album for me was a little underwhelming but glad I listened. Album art is beautiful however Hendrix was not happy with the cultural & religious appropriation, rightfully so. He wanted something to represent his “Indian” heritage so he got this because of poor communication. Should have said Native American.

Kinda meh. I remember listening to Castles Made Of Sand when you mentioned it, I liked it better then. Here it got lost among everything else But I like his voice

I used to really love Hendrix and I still recognize how important he is to the development of rock, metal, and funk. But I think over listening to him as well as an overabundance of poor imitators has taken the shine off of him for me. Regardless, still a pretty damn good album.

Kann man mal hören - aber nur wenn es passt. Genial, lang und in Teilen einfach auch nervig.

It is a Hendrix album so there is pretty good stuff, moderate stuff and stuffless stuff. Again there is evidence of a good songwriter as witness by other artists making covers. In general there aren't enough of them. The guitar work makes up for some of the limitation but that can only go so far. Live is would have been stuffing great as the dodgy soundsystems of the time time would have compensated for the limited vocals.

Enjoyed listening to some Hendrix, didn’t enjoy the amount of channel changes on my headphones.

There are some very good songs through out the album, as a whole package it kinda doesn't work for me. Will I listen to again: 30%

The third best (out of three) Jimi Hendrix Experience albums is still quite good.

It is Jimi Hendrix. You know what you are getting going into it.

A very interesting, experimental experience from the psychedelic Jimi Hendrix- this album felt very loose and full of potential for future ideas!

Hendrix is a genius, inspired many, was one of the great guitarists yet never seemed to make a decent album. The gap between his ability and the consistency of his records is the widest I can think of.

Ok album, a bit of the psychedelic sounds. Huge guitars, iconic. But not my groove overall.

Not sully my style but there were bits I definitely liked, I really liked the song You Got Feelin'.

Really only 3-4 good songs on this one & it's the main songs you've heard.

Song: Little Wing Jimi Hendrix is a legendary guitar player, and the guitar was absolutely the standout here. The rest of the song was cool, but not my taste—during the second verse, the trippy vocal effects made my head spin. I don't think I'll listen again, but this was a good song—just not for me.

Even though I don't know any of the songs on this album, I'd like the musicianship of Jimi Hendrix. I always thought he was a great performer.

I think I was not in the right mindset to fully enjoy this album. I actually stopped listening after the first half, I found it annoying but I think it was my fault. Will revisit.

Good guitar vibe, but I didn't find that it stood out for me personally

Would have been a 4, but 3 because of that fuckin exp intro garbage

First time I ever listened to Jimi Hendrix; probably because it isn't my type of music.

Ta bien 👍

No me gusta nada, nada que me haya llamado la atencion

“Interesting”

The first song threw me off, but the rest were enjoyable enough.

Groovy and awesome

A classic I always intended to listen to and never did. Lessgo.... I enjoyed it, but somehow, none of it hit aggressively to me. I'll listen again when I can use headphones.

Very good. Second album. Did not like it as much as his first.

Southern guitar Needs a relisten

Ok but a bit too much noise and to little drive

I think i need to be in a different sort of mood to properly revisit this. Some of these songs give me anxiety for some reason

Aside from the obvious standout songs, the last three tracks might have been my favorite. The Noel Redding song threw me off and I had to see if the album was over and Spotify randomly out some similar artist on.

Highlights: Up In The Skies, Spanish Castle Magic, If 6 Was 9, Castles Made of Sand. Tl;dr: a series of groovy and trippy jams. Don't expect anything remarkable lyrics wise. Just enjoy the drums and guitar work. Overall: 6/10

Good, but not for me 3/5

Fun album, I really liked the blues tracks and thought they were a high point. I don’t think Jimi is a particularly great vocalist, but his songs don’t require it as much as they just need his energy, which I think is really cool.

Some great songs but not my top JH album by a long shot.

Castles Made of Sand and cover of She's So Fine are standouts for me. There's probably more to unpack here but this is more experimental than I expected.

Not sure I’m a fan

Un visionario de las guitarras Jimi, no hay mucho más que decir y este album lo demuestra una vez más.

Technically I should love this album but it leaves me a bit cold. There are some objectively great songs on it but it all feels a bit “one note”. Maybe the fact that I came to it after Electric Ladyland spoiled it for me? Anyway, some beautiful psychedelic soul on here. Solid but not a knockout

Jimi not fully developed yet. Some good tracks.

Good listen, Jimi shreds

Återigen ett exempel på att det ibland räcker med att lyssna på best of från en artist. Little Wing är bäst och den finns alltid med på alla samlingsskivor. I övrigt helt ok låtar.

#7 ok, men blir ju lite "jobbig". Tiden denna låt fick borde ha getts till Little Wing istället. #8 skönt "jam" #9 en av de bättre. Najs! #10 ok, men samma ljusa röster i kören.

Little wing och Castled made of sand sticker ut, men resten är ojämnt. Klarar en trea pga att jag är svag för hans sound.

Hendrix is workout a doubt an all timer on guitar work and songs like Little Wing along can keep this album with a decent rating. The experimental and rebellious nature of Hendrix almost requires the albums to have songs that go left field and while it grows music and influences artists, it can pull back from the specific album vibe.

Better on headphones than in a car. Wasn't really in the mood for this today. There are some solid jams on here, but not an album that I would likely want to fully listen to often.

This may be a sign that I'm not a Jimi Hendrix guy, or at the very least this album of his is not for me. There's not much I could take away here. The songs were fine, nothing particularly caught my ear, good or bad. I'm not super familiar with Hendrix, but I associate his name with guitar. Even then, there was no guitar work in here that felt especially memorable, at least for me. Definitely closer to a 2.5 than a 3. Highlight: Castles Made of Sand Lowlight: If 6 Was 9 Surprise Hit: Spanish Castle Music

Not my favorite genre. I can appreciate Jumi Hendrix for his skill and the importance of his music but it’s not for me.

Not his best work but still come bangers and great guitar. 3.5

it's not his strongest work, it might even be behind some of the post life stuff, but at the end of the day, it's still Hendrix and there's a lot to love even when it doesn't feel complete

Love Jimi! Vooral Little Wing is fantastisch

Niet de meest consistente plaat van Jimi, maar er staan wel een aantal parels op.

Beetje rommelig soms. En hoewel het natuurlijk over z’n gitaarspel moet gaan, vind ik zijn stem toch ook wel heel goed.

What an incredible talent, some songs don't quite hit with me but it's so easy to appreciate a genius as good as Hendrix. Not listened to much prior to this other than the big hits but there are definitely songs I'll add to my liked songs. Best song - Castles made of sand

Some bangers, some filler songs. Solid listen

This album has some wicked ass solos, but the songwriting is not that stellar. A lot of the songs are kind of forgettable as a complete song. I do overall dig the solos and vibe though. THAT INTRO THOUGH HAHAHA

Spanish Castle Magic a guitar hero GOAT track, some decent guitar wankers, but a little bit boring?

Probably my least favorite of Jimi's albums but still has some incredible tracks like "little wing", "castles made of sand" and "Bold as love"

Claaaassic. Even if it’s his weakest

It was clear that there was a progression in Hendrix's songwriting from Are You Experienced, but I couldn't help but feel like this was almost a demo. This is one of those rare situations (for me, anyway) where the sum is less than the individual parts. The band is amazing, and Hendrix of course is Hendrix, but I couldn't get excited about the album as a whole. The moments that were brilliant were just that. On the whole, though, I found myself waiting for the spark. Again, I think a lot of it comes down to Hendrix as a vocalist, it just limits the compositions in my estimation. And while I almost feel like a fraud for not loving Hendrix for all he represents in modern rock music, truth is, I'm just not swept away.

A classic oh psychedelic rock. Jimi Hendrix is an innovator and a guitar god, I don’t deny that. But this wasn’t for me.

This one of those albums that has some songs I like (Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, and Bold as Love), but some doot songs that don't make it an album I would listen to as a whole. I know this is sacrilege, but I like John Mayer Trio's cover of Wait Until Tomorrow more than Jimi's version. Also, the production of this album is subpar compared to others of the area (read: Cream).

i feel like i need to revisit this one in a better headspace. undeniably cohesive, lush, but i found myself not incredibly focused. probably more of a me thing.

Not all the way there for me, most songs were good up until the 50% mark. Maybe radio static noises aren't for me. Epic guitarist though.

Decent, though the panning effects were rather crudely done.

i wish i could give half stars because to me this is a 3.5. lent a cinematic quality to my morning bus ride and had me tapping along to the beat many times. haven't done a deep listen but i can appreciate it for what it is, and that's rambling and sexy and fun! the entire spanish castle magic to you got me floatin run stood out to me.

Love Little Wing, the other tracks are not as strong.

Cool album, didn't really listen to it too careful. Would put on as background music again.

Also fucking Axis: Bold as Love Das Album ist rein musikgeschichtlich halt krass mit den psychedelischen gitarren riffs Und den unzähligen Gitarrensolos Aber wenn man das beiseite lässt Und ich mich nicht wie nen anthony fantano verhalte Dann sag ich, ich mag electric ladyland viel mehr Nichts desto trotz hat das Album auf jeden geile Songs wie Castle Made of Sand One Rainy Wish Oder You Got me floating Dazu kommt noch der Song if 6 Was 9 Der würde bestimmt abgehen wenn man komplett stoned ist Und der Abschluss mit bold as love war fantastisch Das end Riff war großartig Schlussendlich bewerte ich es aber noch zsm mit 1000 anderen Alben die alle krassund historisch sind Also geb ich diesem hier trd nur eine 3 von 5 Oder in einer logischeren Punktzahl eine 6.5 von 10

Jimmy was starting to spread his wings as a writer, arranger and behind the mixing board. A lot of crazy all over the map experimentation that sowed the seeds for rock songs of the future. Little wing - Classic!

I wish I had the benefit of listening to this with ears from 1960s, before I heard all the bands influenced by Hendrix. In a strange way, because he influenced so many, and so many borrowed his sound, much of his music sounds unoriginal to today's ears. It's a great irony because it sounds unoriginal to modern ears only because it was so original and unique when he did it. I can hear SRV, Eric Johnson, and Van Halen even in this album even though this predates them by many years. This album is notable to me for its variety of new sounds and experiments with tone and sound effects. But it's not catchy. I don't find myself nodding my head to the music at all. Is it too critical to call this musical masturbation? Would I listen to this again? Maybe if I'm really bored. It's not terrible. It's a very short album.

Aika perus Hendrixin soundia. Viimeinen levyn nimikkoraita oli paras

Honestly I feel like I kind of expected to enjoy this more. I didn’t vibe with this album as much as I’d expected to, so I’m honestly just disappointed. However I feel like I can’t give a low rating because it is a good album just something I didn’t click with much.

I liked the electric guitar but overall, meh

Judge by the score I expected something great but overall I wasn't impressed.

Liked it, but not used to listening to this genre. Really wanted to like it more! (dont have much interesting to add - not used to reviewing music)

Solid album that I enjoyed listening to. Nothing really stuck out to me, but that might be because it's not my type of music usually. More enjoyable than not

Displays so much of what I appreciate about musicianship and so little of what I appreciate about songcraft. I bet the JHE was really fun to see live while high though.

I can appreciate it as a classic for its time but it wasn't my cup of tea.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I’ve never really "got" Jimi Hendrix’s music. He’s clearly talented and has some classic hits, but this album just didn’t do much for me.

Can I give a 3.5?

Little wing and Castles Made of Sand

Pshycadelic but not bad. A hard line to dance. 3

Not seminal Hendrix, but it does have Castles Made of Sand, which is a banger.

Honestly I didn't get much out of this album. I think it just wasn't for me. I feel weird rating it too low when there isn't anything wrong with it but it didn't speak to me at ALL.

Feels bad, but did not stand out to me

Not as strong as Are You Experienced or Electric Ladyland. Less than half is great (Little Wing, Castles…, Bold as Love, Floating, Little Miss Lover), but too much backwards guitar experimental treatment and weird psychedelic noodling.

30.08.23 I only listened to a couple of songs on this. Such a buzzy intro with a radio sample, but I didn’t dislike it. Such a cool voice. I’m at Neighbour cafe waiting for a long black

Good but other Hendrix albums are better

Not as good as “Are you experienced”, but still decent

Expected a lot of noise like Electric Ladyland devolves into, but actually a lot prettier and bluesy than I remember.

3+ Little Wing Castles made of sand Bold as love

That was pretty disappointing, especially after how good Are You Experienced was. Set the bar way too high. Only track that was an instant repeat was Little Wing. Disappointed in If Six Was Nine, especially given that was the only track I recognised before listening. Still a good album, but nowhere near what it could have been after his first.

Lots of highs, just as many lows, sounds like a studio recording of frameworks to use for live jams. I’m sure those are fantastic, but lots of these tracks are inconsistent and just a vehicle for Jimi to showcase his guitar skills. Pretty clearly a 3 star pick for me.

Pretty damn good

This is the first time I've listened to a full Jimmy Hendrix Experience album. Ah ... love the psychedelic 60s. "Little Wing" has been covered so many times, I forgot that it was a Hendrix song.

Good rock album, first album that I heard from Jim Hendrix. Need to hear more similar albums to have better knowledge to rate it better, but I liked it as an introduction to this genre and this iconic artists

Better than a lot of his other stuff but I still just don’t get it. Slam the instrument more so it makes noise!

More great stuff but the album tracks on this one stifled the overall experience. Only giving this a 3 as relative to the 5 of AYE. A little more hippie and less guitar-rock focused than the debut.

Weird album. But it was ok

missing all of my favorites

A good album but nowhere near the level of other bands from the time, saved a few tracks to a few playlists but that's all this one gets.

3 starz

man heeft gitaar uitgespeeld maar het ontbreekt voor mij nog iets, maar dat kan ook aan mijn gebrek van kennis liggen

Tof éénmalig

Good guitar, of course. Generally fon otherwise

Need to listen to again

everyone knows jimi hendrix was a talented guitar player, and sometimes because it's such a fact i don't pay enough attention to his guitar playing. hendrix' axis: bold as love didn't contain his most well known songs, except for little wing. because i didn't know most songs, i concentrated more on the guitar--and my goodness, that man was TALENTED. lots of psychedelia rock here. that's definitely what influenced the album cover, though hendrix and my displeasure over the label's choice is another story. i've previously had the follow-up album, electric ladyland, as part of 1001 albums. while both are psychedelic rock, axis doesn't have that soul sound and is more r&b based. while i try not to compare, i enjoyed this but not as much as electric ladyland.

After listening to this album, I need to make an amendment to something I said before. In a previous review, I stated that 'Electric Ladyland' was still an amazing album, but probably the weakest Hendrix studio album due to it being a bit "disorganized". Well, after revisiting 'Axis: Bold as Love', I feel like album organization is not everything. This album certainly feels more organized and tidy than 'Electric Ladyland', but I actually didn't find the music to be QUITE as good. Sometimes, a jam session like 'Electric Ladyland' really can just be THAT good. Still though, this is Jimi Hendrix we are talking about. Everything in his realm is kind of a jam session, and you just kind of accept that as part of getting to hear his phenomenal musicianship. Any Jimi Hendrix is better than no Jimi Hendrix.

Listened to it in the background while doing work. Was enjoyable but nothing special jumped out to me. Definitely need to give it a second listen

Sonic alchemy. Unfortunately, some of the musical ideas seem to be a little bit half baked.

3 electric ladyland is better

Well, this album suffers a lot from appearing on this list less than a week since Are You Experienced. Whereas that album is a firecracker that really shows off what Jimi can do, this album feels much more subdued in a way that doesn't really benefit the album. Hendrix's real strength appears in the restrained chaos that is his guitar playing. This album just features far fewer moments that really feature his guitar playing. It definitely has some good songs, but it never reaches the heights of Are You Experienced? 3/5

I listened while doing yard work, so I was admittedly distracted, but I wasn’t grabbed by this one.

It has some moments but overall I had a hard time to stay tuned.

he guitar good. some song slap some song crap. cool noises tho good job overall james. title track rocks very hard

I'm not sure what to rate this album. Hendrix's music is not exactly my thing but I can wholly appreciate how fucking cool, slick, talented, unusual, ground-breaking, and inspirational his music is. I did enjoy listening to this album too, it's also really fun music! It's so clever how he bridged the gaps between classic jazz/blues/soul and rock and so seamlessly too! I just don't enjoy long drawn-out guitar solos that much, there's no two ways about that. So even having said all of the above, this does somewhat decrease my enjoyment of the album. There's so much more to it than just guitar solos but it is a huge part of it. It makes it less easy to listen to and catchy I guess. Very very cool though!

As much as I wanted to love this album I just liked it. I don’t love Hendrix’s voice on this album. I think this album would be a lot better to listen to when high/not sober. There is a very great songs other eh ones on this album. Little wing was the standout song for guitar for me. Castle made of sand was the standout lyrics wise for me

Some great hits but some annoying innovations with stereo sound

Good one

not bad

Decent, no standout songs bar Castles made of Sand to me. Would add to ipod for easy walks

This doesn't do much for me...

I have a hard time getting into Hendrix for some reason.

Not a huge Hendrix fan

Excellent guitar skills on show, but a bit overindulgent at times.

Alright.

Never a huge fan of Hendrix, but the album has some incredible guitar and groove.

Funkyy

Jimi Hendrix opens his sophomore record with a faux interview about UFOs, and it’s obvious from the rest of the music that follows, that he’s on a mission to concoct an otherworldly musical experience. to some degree, he succeeds: Axis: Bold as Love is a groovy, complex work that puts on display Hendrix’s devilish talents. his guitar is his breath, and it is hot and heavy — songs like “Little Wing” and the gorgeous gorgeous “If 6 Was 9” see Hendrix rip and shred to astonishing effect, perfecting a psychedelic musical vision that was way ahead of its time. his infusion of rock, jazz, and blues (“Spanish Castle Magic” for example proving itself such a balanced mix of all those genre sleights) make the album a rich experience. still, Hendrix is no wordsmith; his lyrics are light to the point of vapid, and there are no songs here that truly stand out above the crop, nothing truly memorable. Hendrix was clearly a one-trick pony, even though he galloped and blitzed past his contemporaries with that singular trick. this album is loaded with a lot of filler that only exists as a showcase for Hendrix, which is great, except there’s not much to return to.

old school cool

I love Jimi as a guitar player, but this album is a little too experimental.

The one Hendrix album I'd not heard. It's good, quite psychy and I like the stereo experimentation

I really like Jimi Hendrix, but this album is completely unknown to me. It IS Jimi though, and I am sure I will grow to love it someday.

good, i guess revolutionary.

More like a 3.5, I wish more of the songs had stood out to me.

Some great songs on here, but some forgettable ones too. Not quite enough of the former to push it to a four.

I thought I was familiar with Axis, but nope, this was all new to me. I definitely rinsed Are You Experienced and Electric Landlady as an unbearable A Level student who thought he would change the world by wearing a tie-dye T-shirt. Axis must have been AWOL from the local CD library. I don't think I missed much. This sounds more self-indulgent than the other two albums. But then isn't Jimi all about being the showman? He was hardly a shrinking violet. It sounds very fractured in places. Not a complete album, but a collection of songs. I like the British Mod backbeat, but not so much all the hippy shit.

meh album

Identifying Hendrix : It’s Hendrix

It was definitely Jimi. Nothing really stood out here. Good guitar work, but not even as good as on his other albums.

groovy tune, good evening listen

First time listening to their album, not to my taste

Consistently good Album Cover: NR

T3B 1. Little Wing 2. Spanish Castle Magic 3. Bold As Love

It was alright. Not really my kind of thing but it was fine.

Funky and fun

Teilweise extrem chillige Gitarrenmusik

Wanted to like it more, but still good.

Flera klassiker här men inte lika bra som electric ladyland eller are you experienced

The weakest of the three studio Hendrix albums. It's still good, but I don't know if it's a radical enough departure from the other two to require inclusion? This list suffers from an inability to kill its darlings, and while the three Hendrix albums aren't as egregious as the over-representation that some artists have on the list - Costello and Bowie are easy targets - there's more eclecticism in those discographies. Is this essential? I would argue no.

I love Jimmy, but can't help feel this is a bit of an inconsistent mess of an album. Some awesomeness, but some crap too.

Exp isn’t really song, it’s just noise and an opener so there’s nothing to say. Up From The Skies wasn’t what I expected from Hendrix, it was fine, I don’t see myself listening to it again, but I don’t hate it. Spanish Castle Magic was more what I expected, I liked it a bit more than Up From The Skies, it was a pretty decent song. Wait Until Tomorrow was quite funky, in terms of enjoyment I’d put it between SCM and UFTS. Ain’t No Telling was pretty good, pretty even with SCM. Little Wing I think everyone who likes rock music knows, it’s a good song. If 6 Was 9 reminded me of War Pigs by Black Sabbath, just the start-stop style riff, the song itself was alright, kinda what I expected from Hendrix. You Got Me Floatin’ was okay, again didn’t blow me away, didn’t bore, it was fine. Castle Made Of Sand was good, wasn’t a huge fan of the reversed guitars but I liked it nonetheless. She’s So Fine is ok, granted it’s not Jimi Hendrix, but it’s a decent song again. One Rainy Wish grew on me as the song went on, I liked it. Little Miss Lover was fine, nothing stood out though. Bold As Love was a good song to close the album, definitely fit the album well. Overall, I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would have, not much else to say, I just did. 3.5/5

Some clear bangers mixed with mellower tracks. This album is very loose which can sometimes come off a bit ragged and a little too wandering

On initial listen, a fear that the usual Hendrix tricks are here - indulgent guitar solos, washed out production and unmemorable lyrics- and whilst there’s a bit of that here, on repeat listen there are some outstanding tracks- Little Wing, If 6 Was 9 and One Rainy Wish - great psych rock tracks.

Little Wing is gold, rest is just about meh. Great musicianship but songwriting is flat.

My first album was very different from what I’m used to listening to. I’m glad, because this is exactly why I decided to start. Hendrix’s guitar skills are insane! PS I love the album cover.

Better than I expected, 3/5

better now than when I was 16.

I find the slower pieces more to my liking, the imprisoned more easily appreciated. I recognize the exceptional quality of the arrangements and of his guitar playing

I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand, the guitar skills were superb and inventive. I don't think anyone could play like that but him. On the other hand, the songs were boring. The melodies were nothing to speak of, the lyrics were forgettable, etc. But that playing... incredible. I look forward to his other stuff where hopefully the songs are better. I also bet his live work is good.

Jimi is great, not the best effort but still very good.

Jimi Experimenting. Not as powerful as his debut album, "Are You Experienced" but still has some classics many have come to know and love, of course Little Wing being the star of the show. While outside the main hitters, there are not any songs that standout, compared to the slew of classics other albums may have, this is an easy listen however, and any Jimi fan will appreciate what he has going on, especially as he was starting his career.

All good songs. A couple of great songs. Had never heard this entire album before and I was expecting more. 3.5 stars

Enjoy Jimi's sound.

This is totally the sound I had envisioned when hearing about Hendrix. Its got the psychedelia, it's got the guitars and all of the guitar solos which are undoubtedly absolute top notch. However, that is not enough to save many of the songs of the album of which are quite frankly forgettable. Axis: Bold As Love has an airiness to it, where it is easy to see how Hendrix & team have a high (pun intended) association with hippies and stoners. Looking at the album cover will definitely trip you out. Best: Castles Made Of Sand Worst: One Rainy Wish

I always thought that Jimi was a bit overrated and this didn't change my mind in the least. Dude can play guitar, but there's some real dud songs to be found here. Jimi didn't really sing very well either. I'll die on that hill. Virtuoso guitar player, boring vocalist. In the end, I did actually enjoy it more than I disliked it though; mostly because of Jimi's guitar abilities. A 3. I'd much rather listen to Are You Experienced? if I was to listen to an entire album.

Yeah this sounds like Jimi Hendrix

No me ha parecido una cosa súper interesante. No está mal, pero tampoco es que digas o que obra maestra.

I will always respect him, but the arrangements and general production and psychadelia are not for me.

Great guitar play as always but the songs itself lack a real structure and are not much more than some jam sessions

First time listening to a whole Jimi album.

Very cool, very trippy album by Jimi Hendrix. I felt like I should have been on mushrooms or acid to appreciate this to the fullest! Hendrix is a master on the guitar and it is evident here. I don't know I'd it was the version that I listened to on Apple music but the way the album was recorded and mastered it seemed like some sounds and vocals would switch ears. Again all the more reason to be in a different mind state to appreciate, lol. No real stand out tracks for me at least after only one listen, but there were also no tracks of his that I have heard before on this album. For me I would definitely have to give this album a second and more focused listen.

Super guitar licks!
