Reviews (page 10 of 13)
definitely an experimental 60s sound
3.5
Fet introlåt. Nevermind Spanish castle magic er god, og klarer reisen inn på spillelisten. Ingen nytt favorittalbum
Maybe caught me on a bad day: I enjoy a lot of Jimi's work (and obviously there are 2 or 3 of his greatest tracks on here) but this record was a bit too wig-out in places.
Kind of just got bored of this tbh, a few big hits just about bring it over to a 3. Undeniably great guitarist, wasn’t quite a songwriter 3.0/5.0 Best Song: Little Wing
It's fine, its your older cousin who smokes too much weed music. He is obviously an incredible guitar player, but his songwriting is not great. I do love little wing and bold as love though.
Jimi and the Experience open up their softer, spacier, side on their second record. Patchy, but the high points are fantastic! Favourite tracks: Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, Castles Made Of Sand, Bold As Love
Sadly, there are definitely better Hendrix albums. Luckily, its still Hendrix
A bit Zzz for jimi
Inte någon favorit bland Hendrix skivor.
“Axis: Bold As Love” (1967) lands as classic ’60s psych-blues for me—hard-panned stereo tricks and lots of effects, but a loose feel and few truly sticky melodies; not a replay.
I guess his first album created great expectations and I imagine at the time, this was well-received, but with hindsight it's not as good as Are You Experienced.
always thought The Jimi Hendrix Experience was aptly named as I associated their sound in my head more with the sonic experience of fuzzy guitars and cool cat flower power presentation than with specific songs (Purple Haze iconic tho) Apart from Little Wing, Ive mostly skipped over this album when tapping into a Hendrix mood. Giving it a proper listen today was really cool. Some tracks didnt blow my face off in 2025 and teetered on losing my attention, while others were mind bogglingly heavy (1967??) and even catchy. Some interesting characters in Jimi’s lyrics too Fav tracks: Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, Castles Made of Sand
Definitely my least favorite of the major Hendrix records. While still full of some great tracks and amazing guitar playing, I never felt it reaches the soring heights his first and last records do. 3.5 -> 3/5
His first album is better but there's some good licks here.
Great
Doesn’t have any of my favourite Hendrix tracks that I sometimes listen to on it but I did enjoy it
No private session used for Spotify. I liked this album, listened to it a few times nice to hear tunes from this guitar god that aren't overplayed, I need to listen to it more.
This was fine - it sounded just like what I think of when I think of Jimi Hendrix. Nothing really jumped out at me as something I need to listen to again, but I didn't hate any of it.
Another album I grew up with and I always thought the guitar was transcendent. I feel light when I listen to it. That being said, I won't listen to it often.
This is great for what it is. I'm not super in to psychedelic music, but I can tell this is one of those influential and foundational albums for it. I don't ever want to just listen to this though.
I don't know how you follow up an album with the magnitude of "Are You Experienced?", and so quickly at that. The group pretty much never stopped recording new music. This one isn't quite as memorable, but the guitar playing is still top notch and the various experimentation featuring said guitar gives us some highlights. Everything is looser and less organized as a unit as a result.
Really liked this! I kind of remember this album from when I was little, but good to appreciate it now I’m older
It's Hendrix, it's experimental, it's fabulous.
Funny that this album doesn’t have any of his megahits on it, but I really enjoyed it. Good vibes throughout.
1. Exp - N/A It's an intro skit essentially. Shouldn't be rated because of that. 2. Up From The Skies - 5 The guitar sound is great for the psychedelic vibe that Jimi Hendrix usually always is. The vocals are quite soft as well on this track that aide that vibe. Overall it's a decent track. 3. Spanish Castle Magic - 8 Great rock sound. The guitars are brilliant, the bass is brilliant, and the solo in the outro is absolutely awesome. Great track. 4. Wait Until Tomorrow - 6 The choruses feel too chaotic but the verses are excellent in sound and composition. Drum is brilliantly highlighted on the track. 5. Ain't No Telling - 6 It's a fun and fast track. It's very short as well but still a good and enjoyable sound. Lovely bass is coupled well with the drums on this track to keep the pace so well. 6. Little Wing - 6 A more psychedelic track. Very good lyrics and the instruments are alright but this track didn't blow me away. Guitar solo in the outro is excellent. 7. If 6 Was 9 - 3 Lyrically the weakest thing on the album. Instrumentally it's all over the place. Drum solo is brilliant but it's such a struggle to get through the song to it and afterwards the soliloquy isn't enjoyable. Neither is the fact that the vocals are not balanced well in volume and actually go up and down on the track. 8. You Got Me Floatin' - 7 Good guitars and a great voice from Hendrix. I like how the background vocals are used on this track as well. Solid stuff. 9. Castles Made of Sand - 6 The guitar solo in the bridge was excellent but lyrically the second verse is really poor. Instrumentally it's just too random a track to fully enjoy it. 10. She's So Fine - 7 Guitar solo outro is excellent. Song itself is okay. It almost reminds me of a Beatles track a bit with the vocals. Overall, enjoyable. 11. One Rainy Wish - 8 The line about the woman stealing his heart away is so brilliant and the guitar through that part is superb. Really great sounding track. The verses are very enjoyable as well. Excellent track. 12. Little Miss Lover - 6 I love the guitars on this track, particularly the bass. They sound excellent both in the solos and short bursts between the lyrics that we hear. Lyrically I didn't find it anything superb. It's a track meant really only for the guitar sound. 13. Bold as Love - 6 Lyrically I don't find this track to be anything spectacular but what was spectacular is the incredible bridge. The guitar and drums are massive on this track and you can't help but get swept away by them. Average Rating: 5.69 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 2.85 Rounded Up: 3 Stars

Pretty cool
This is totally the sound I had envisioned when hearing about Hendrix. Its got the psychedelia, it's got the guitars and all of the guitar solos which are undoubtedly absolute top notch. However, that is not enough to save many of the songs of the album of which are quite frankly forgettable. Axis: Bold As Love has an airiness to it, where it is easy to see how Hendrix & team have a high (pun intended) association with hippies and stoners. Looking at the album cover will definitely trip you out. Best: Castles Made Of Sand Worst: One Rainy Wish
Esta bien, no es mi tipo de musica pero admito que si fue disfrutable
I didn't particularly like Electric Ladyland, so I didn't expect to like this either. But surprisingly, I found it a very enjoyable listen. Little Wing is great and there are several other strong songs on here. Felt much more focused and rock/R&B oriented than Ladyland. Giving this a very solid 3, almost a four.
1967 Familiar with some of the tracks, but not the album as a whole, which I enjoyed enough to give it two spins today. Shall I buy it? Probably not. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Far out ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
Bam innovative guitar that changed the world.
Awesome record, need to spend more time with it. stunning guitar playing as always, the songs themselves didn't grab me at any point on first listen, but it was awesome to have on.
An ok album that clearly documents the evolution (and quick evolution) of Jimi Hendrix as an artist, but falls short of being a great album to listen to. Some great moments but some weak spots too.
Finally getting around to Hendrix, and he's everything everyone's said he is. Technically incredible, but missing something that I was looking for. Definitely gonna check out Are You Experienced though. Favorites: Spanish Castle Magic, If 6 Was 9, Castles Made of Sand
Banger for 2nd anniversary
Neither here nor there
Would have given a 3.5 but alas! Surround sound at the intro to the album was cool. I wanted to like this album more than I did but I felt it wasn’t his best work. It was good! But not hugely memorable I fear. I feel like in this album you can hear him finding his sound. Sad that you can take the political lyrics of the 60s and transpose them onto today. Particularly in If 6 was 9. Time is stuck in a loop, huh?
This one doesn’t stick out much more than Jimi’s other work, and I haven’t done the research to learn more about the album. But let me give Jimi his flowers (as one should) he is one of the defining voices in the world of guitar players. I remember when I first started learning to play the guitar, his playing was one of the first instances where I realized you can’t just play a part. You have to FEEL IT, and Jimi is a guitar player that regardless of what he’s playing you’re feeling every note. He still deserves his spot on the Mt Rushmore of guitar player imo.
Кайфово звучит, очень радуюсь когда нахожу нормальные записи хендрикса, видимо яндекс музыка меня не баловала. Слушается на одном дыхании, мне понравилось, но прям сильно не зацепило
This has some tasty stuff on it but it's not on the same level as "Electric Ladyland" or "Are You Experienced?". Still an enjoyable listen.
I played Are You Experienced ALOT during my teens. Not heard this one before. I was expecting more of the same but it is very different … in a good way 👍
Highlight Song/s: Castles Made of Sand This is definitely my least favourite of the Jimi Hendrix Experience albums. It completely missed me twice now. While on the other hand, I fell in love with Are You Experienced? (U.S. version specifcally) and Electric Ladyland easily. I mean it has intricate guitar parts and amazing drum fills just like the other two, so why wouldn't I like this one? No clue, but that's how I feel about it.
I have not heard of this album, knowing only Are you Experienced and Electric LadyLand and I had not really bonded with Electric Ladyland when generated recently. My thoughts are that he is a sublime guitarist and instrumentalist, and I admire the fact that he pioneered the use of guitar distortion, but I find his songs lack complexity and the lyrics weak. The songs appear serve to showcase his talent as a guitarist and seem to be more suited for a live audience than a listen at home. Having said that, I really liked Bold as Love and Little Wing. For those songs it got a weak 4.
3/1089 The first half turned me off. Too psychedelic, too experimental, too angry. Felt like the music should be played over a scene in a movie where someone’s self-destructing at a drug-fueled party. But I sat up and listened at Little Wing. The triangle (?) is gorgeous! And there are a few others in the latter half that I’m at least a little into. Probably going to give this a straight 3/5. Glad I listened to it, might return to some individual songs, but not the whole album.
Little Wing and Castles in the Sand are the memorable tracks.
Fínt. Ekki eins cool og mig minnti
Jimi er óumdeildur snillingur og án efa einn besti gítarleikari allra tíma. Þessi tónlist er hins vegar ekki fyrir mig.
There no denying Hendrix's guitar mastery, but I struggle with this album as a 1001 entry, what does it offer that Are You Experienced or Electric Ladyland didn't already provide? It's good, but probably taking up space for something more worthy to the 1001 list.
Not as in love with Jimi Hendrix as I used to be. Still like his music! Some of it just comes off as noise. I never thought I would say that but that's the case. He's still brilliant but not in my rotation much anymore
I think its quite good and the best Jimi album But part of me wonders, is it just that im supposed to like this, rather than actually thinking its amazing I like the guitar playing. Castles is great. Its good
Not really my stuff. Cool guitar
Nothing really stood out and it barely jumped out beyond being background noise. Nice background noise though.
I think this would be superb live
This is bad ass.
I want to believe, but I don't quite
Didn't excite.
There is a lot of wasted time on this thing. Just noises and screeches. Get to the actual music Jimi!
Pas mon préféré d'Hendrix, mais bon album somme toute!
Like it 3/5
Never could jive with Jimi’s melodies and chord progressions. Very inconsistent, some good tracks on here though. Title track is strong.
Hendrix is another artist I respect for what they’ve done but I don’t really love their music. Not that this is bad. It just doesn’t do much for me even when I can notice the amazing guitar work. 3/5
She’s so fine and little miss lover are the standouts. the rest of the album is meh. It has enough to keep it from being a 2star, just..
I might get crucified for this but most of this album was shockingly boring. The experiments with feedback are best left unrepeated. Little Wing and Castles Made of Sand are obvious standouts.
I don't know quite what I think of this. I didn't dislike it. It seemed sort of experimental, a bit all over the place? Not particularly my thing?
"If 6 was 9" is so classic, and I really liked "Little Miss Lover."
Good album, not his best
Site don't crash again!
Got a lot of bluesy and trippy parts. Impressive guitar work too. Just not sure if I'll remember any of the songs for long.
Classic Hendrix.
Should be 3.5- cannot believe they do not allow half stars.
It was ok
Again, I realise I don't quite like Hendrix as much as I thought. Guitar playing is great but not all of this was gripping.
Little Wing is one of my favorite songs. That being said, I have to be in the mood to listen to this album. It is a generational thing so for me I have very little relationship with the record. It is a fine record but only can indulge in it a few mosels at a time.
Starts off annoying - nobody needs a track of static. Castles Made of Sand stands the test of time. Pleasant listen, but also kind of jazz background music except with a guitar.
When I started listening to Exp, I was thinking “wait wtf is happening” and it wasn’t pleasant to listen to… but I was intrigued haha. Overall I really I liked the guitar and grooviness once I got into it. I thought “now we’re rockin!” I’m vibing to Little Wing right now. This helps me gain appreciation for psychedelic rock. I like it.
Honestly thought it would be better. Knew the famous songs, and they are great. But rest of the album is mid. Gotta go 3. Sorry Jimi
meh for today's standards
I can see what people mean that this sounds better while your stone or drinking because I was kind of getting bored half way through.
Had LP1 on CD back in high school, grew out of classic rock in college and upon relearning to like it, I have definitely come to appreciate LP3 as a masterpiece. I may never have heard this album besides "Little Wing", "If 6 was 9" and the title track. Now that I've heard the whole album I have to admit that even "Little Wing" and the title track may have been brand new for me. And "Castles Made of Sand" was most recognizable, possibly a track my guitar teacher tried to get me to learn. Overall a fine time, I may revisit.
it was fun!
Opening track is the unfortunately prevalent avant-garde weirdness. A couple of actual songs also get a bit weird. Otherwise, pleasant to listen to.
Québecois's review : À écouté bin batté. Translation : Must listen while high.
I really tried to listen to this, but screeching guitar sounds are just not my vibe at all.
Gezellig
That one I gave away years ago, as I couldn't get into it. Not much of a fan, too much noodeling, too few songs. only kept a greatest hits.
I don't think that I've ever heard of this album, let alone any of the songs. I enjoyed it.
This always seemed to threaten to get going but never did. Castles made of sand a highlight
Didn"t really connect with it. Probably another artist best kept to a best of album
I don’t mind Hendrix. I just struggle to get excited by Hendrix.
Hendrix is a boss. This album is just fine.
I don't get Jimi Hendrix and think he is very over rated. Little Wing is about the only track worth hearing.
Decent but nowhere near the levels of Electric Ladyland
Wish I had half-star ratings available, 3 too low, 4 too high. Not his best work, but it does contain, probably, his best song ("Little Wing") along with a few other gems. Doesn't blow me away, but still quite good.
I can respect this album a lot, and glad I listened to it, but will probably not return to it
It’s 1967 so parts of this album are experimental. It’s Jimi Hendrix so there is plenty of other dimensional guitar riffs. “Little Wing” and “Castles Made of Sand” are standouts. Unfortunately Jimi’s genius doesn’t always translate well in the recording studio.
3/5.
Cool guitar sounds. Hendrix's voice is kind of boring to me. It almost sounds like he's singing from the next room over - there's something dull about it. Music from the '60s has something about it that just stops it from really hitting me, I think it's just too far back for me to not seem a bit dated. Overall a decent album but no standouts. I think if I heard this at a time when I felt more energetic I'd get more out of it, but hey ho
Eh. It's fine. Jimmy Hendrix has never really done it for me for some reason. The guitar is just a little too raw and dissonant. 5/10 (2.5/5)
expected more honestly
One of the worst intros ever. So irritating. But leads in to pure gold. Little Wing is one of the best.
7/10 Highlights: Little Wing Spanish Castle Magic Bold as Love Castles Made of Sand
Can confirm. The guy could play guitar. You might even say well.
Nice background music for a sunny afternoon. Nothing really stood out but did enjoy the listen. High: Wait Until Tomorrow Low: Didn’t really love the intro to the album
This was my second Jimi Hendrix album and I liked it more... mostly because if felt less meandering and guitar solo heavy.
Meh it was alright, seems like it would be featured in a b list action movie
Pretty sick this one. Probably favourite so far. Still only 3 starts though
I need to give this more listens, although in nearly 60 years I have only just attempted to do so. I gave Experienced five stars, being generous here …
Not as iconic as Are you Experienced but solid
Album #2 - This is a good album, but it's not my jam. I don't like the psychedelic aspect. There are a few all-time classics, but the overall album isn't great. Best songs Little Wing Spanish Castle Magic If 6 was 9
Not as strong as the Experience's first album, and much more tight than Electric Ladyland. It just seems heastily thrown together, but there are bangers on here and tracks that prove that Hendrix is the greatest guitar player of all time, hands down. 3.46/5 stars. Bangers: If 6 Was 9 Bold as Love Must hear: Wait Until Tomorrow Spanish Castle Magic Castles Made of Sand
Honestly didn’t bold as love this one— the sixties rock sound is not really my thing. I think the classics are good songs (bold as love, if 6 was 9, Spanish castle magic) but this isn’t a great album to me
*Not a lot of strong songs here. * best song – castles made of sand
Good stuff
Enjoyable listen but never truly hooked me in
I've now listened to every album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and all I'm gonna say is by U.S. standards, they were a One-Hit Wonder(although Hendrix's admission in the 27 Club was the main reason why). Other than "Are You Experienced", the other two albums are mediocre on their best day. That's not to say Jimi Hendrix wasn't one of the greatest guitarists of all time. However, these songs essentially rely on Hendrix's epic guitar solos, and while it's fine for awhile, it gets old. Favorite Track: "If Six Was Nine".
Hendrix's guitar is probing and epic. The album is a bit more playful than I expected.
As far as Hendrix goes, it's usually good to great music. This album is clearly one of the early ones. A good album.
Need drugs for this one. Just not for me. Great voice though
This is the only Hendrix album that I couldn't name. It's not the Jimi I'm used to. It is, to me, more experimental and "out there" than the other two. It was fine, but I'm not sure if I was on the right drugs to really like it.
Some strong guitar playing
3.5, but 5 stars for Little Wing
the panning is Too Much
don't get the hubbub
Jimi’s been played to death and it’s a lot of wank, but you can’t ignore the cultural blast radius he left behind. The rhythm section carry the weight; the guitar just gets the headlines.
almost 4
Not my favourite Jimi album, I find half way through I always lose interest. It is a work of art, but not for me unfortunately. Have always preferred are you experienced?
Some good for sure
Not my Fav Hendrix album
Hendrix ist technisch begabt, aber sein Musik overrated, fight me
This was cool! Want to give it another spin, but fun to finally get a Jimi Hendrick album under my belt
Great follow up to Are You Experienced? but nowhere near as transcendent. If 6 was 9 is such a wild trip. So uniquey Jimi. Castles is brilliant.
Bold indeed. I like the range on this one. Not my go to, but I can see the genius.
You know how on albums from this era that drugs make the album and other times drugs made the album? This is definitely one of those.
Experimental, no es el Hendrix más potente
Trippy. Production sounds great for 1967
נחמד
3 stars only because that wasn't my thing but I respect the sound and artistry for what it was at the time.
I recognize and value his cultural significance, but I’ve never been able to connect with his music.
I'm not currently on enough psychedelics to fully appreciate this record. It's groovin, rockin, trippy, and sexy. I know my Dad was in to this, and for him I enjoyed the listen. Maybe I'll go smoke some weed now.
Cool :)
Not crazy about the beginning. Liked the ending songs better. Short album. Some songs reminded me of the 60s, eastern influences, and the Beatles.
A decent listen. I'm not going back for more, but it wasn't annoying or irritating, so, that's a win!
Good slbum for a sunny spring morning. I’ve never listened to a Hendrix studio album before and enjoyed the Experience
I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this, but I enjoyed it far more than I ever would have thought. It is something I'll listen to again. 3/5
Fav: Little Wing Least Fav: Up From The Skies Hearing Little Wing made me realise how badly Eric Clapton butchered it
dosta dobro. u zadnje vrijeme samo šibam trojke, ovome bih i dao četvorku jer me nije razočaralo, iako ne znam hoću li slušati opet (možda pjesmu you've got me floating)
Undeniably talent. Just not really my thing if that's ok
Some good songs but none of his hits and a lot of this album feels a little samey. I didn't love it.
Good
Do NOT listen to the opening track full volume in your car sober at 8 am. That’s not the way god intended it to be heard.
I like this album because Jimi Hendrix is super talented. Also fun fact my brother's name is Jimi because of Jimi Hendrix!
Do you want to listen to some music that has some percussion? Well in Little Wing you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of guitar? Well in Castles Made Of Sand you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of drums? Well in One Rainy Wish you can!I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song.
the first song started off good it actually isn't that bad compared to the other ones the beat it rlly good n da background music is good to. the second song started off kinda good bc of the instrument and yea but the lyrics are not cool like broe hello? the last song started off good like all of them the lyrics sound good from what I'm hearing I like these songs except the second song bc of da lyrics
Why are there so many arms and heads but not enough bodies? "Little Wing" was okay. The music sounded weird though. It was like, they want to play louder but for some reason they can't. "Castles Made Of Sand" was better. I liked the guitar. But the lyrics were really sad. I thought "One Rainy Wish" was okay. The music was a little slow at the beginning but it got good later on. The lyrics were also interesting. I don't really recommend this album.
the first song is okay i like how the instruments sound together i dont really like how his voice sounds there is not much more to say about the song. the next song is okay It's the same as the other one i like how the instruments sound. the last song is also okay there is still not much more to add. overall this album is okay i wouldn't really recommend it.
3.5
I’d have to check the tape, but we have to be nearing the end of albums handed out by Jack Black in 2003’s School of Rock. We had Blondie, Yes, uhhh this? Whatever. That one anecdote in my head rattles next to the surging endorphins precipitated by seeing this album come up. Jimi Hendrix?? Fantastic? This album cover? An LSD trip in an Indian art museum. Three miles from my body in the Bombay art district imagining gods emerging from each of my infinite arms. Fire up that guitar. Literally. Set it on fire. EXP - Luckily I just wolfed down a jumbo bag of Doritos and chugged a full water cooler of Mountain Dew. Not only am I in the throes of strychnine poisoning, but I have double EXP for this opening track. I can see through the eons. The walls are melting around me. Lucky I’m made of wax. Change states. Up From the Skies - What happened?? Jimi?? No. Oh wait. It’s actually not bad. Wanted this to go harder though. Spanish Castle Magic - The most feared magic of all. If you run into somebody named Raul Esquillo Monserrat IV, run as far as you can before you are turned into one of the many turrets on his labyrinthine castle on the Basque coast. This riff rules. Perhaps I am under el spell of said magic. Wait Until Tomorrow - See this track title is very misleading, because he says that we don’t have to wait until tomorrow and he says it like 68 times. That’s about 64 or so too many. Not my favourite. Ain’t No Telling - If the last song title is any indication, I assume that there WILL be telling here. I’m not sure I can handle this rollercoaster. This song is quite good. Frantic pace, interesting lyrics, and brings a polished and heavy feel to music that sounds almost improvised in parts. Little Wing - I actually recently accessed my third eye and wrote this song myself about a raw deal I was forced to endure at a local purveyor of chicken wings. I intend to sue over the lacklustre quality and sizing of the wings in the supposed “extreme beast dipper basket.” This song is whatever. If 6 Was 9 - then 96 would be the funny number. Really makes you think. And if good songs were bad, this would be a total dud. You Got Me Floatin’ - A more middle of the road song here. Just kind of “floatin’” there. Castles Made of Sand - Sad stuff. Excellent song. Gentle musical moment with excellent psychedelic effects enhancing virtuosic guitar playing. She’s So Fine - Somehow a 50’s diner song has appeared on Axis. It still has many of the elements that make this album interesting, but not the greatest. One Rainy Wish - I almost want to leave this one blank. So very boring. Little Miss Lover - Cool. I mean lame song title that I criticize most of these old foagies for, but this song rocked pretty good. Bold as Love - Guitar solo closer went pretty hard. Way to go Jimothy. This felt like a bad trip a few times. I wanted to see technicolor deities unbeknownst to my western eyes, but instead I discovered that I may have indeed taken too small a dose and barely hallucinated some strange colours on the BNN stock ticker in the muffler shop waiting room. There are amazing songs on this thing, and there are songs that were boring. Nothing terrible, and a lot great, so while I was underwhelmed, that’s high praise when it comes to the Dirty 1001 that I am currently being dragged through. Kudos to Jimi. Use one of those arms to give yourself a pat on the back. Heck, get the whole band. 3-3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Spanish Castle Magic, Ain’t No Telling, If 6 Was 9
I like Hendrix's music, but never loved it. Listening to this album I have to admire the production. It sounds fantastic and yet it still leaves me a bit cold. File it under and acknowledged classic but not coming back soon.
Diverse, ambitious. I find it largely forgettable though reasonably enjoyable.
okay, nothing special
Interesting
Pleasant listening experience overall. Groovy and upbeat. However, Bold as Love was the only one that I could maybe see adding to my playlist.
There are some great songs on this. And then there are some forgetful songs on it as well. Unfortunately, more forgettable songs...
I can appreciate this album for what it is and what Jimi did for music at the time but this album doesn’t match my taste
Pre-listening thoughts: wow we are really on a streak of artists that any classic rock fan would give a five with no question but I am probably going to rate a 3! Post/during listening thoughts: yeah okay am I missing something here? Like idk I just don’t get it. This is just okay. I’m gonna look up in the mirror later to see a red laser dot pointed at my forehead for saying this. Also why is there a song by a completely different dude on here?? 5.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope Fav tracks: Wait Until Tomorrow Least fav tracks: whatever the hell that opener was
his lovely voice and the nice lyrics! - surely not easy listening
Not a patch on Electric Ladyland, but still fine- Hendrix is remembered as one of the best guitarists of all time for a reason!
i dont think i will ever get the magic behind jimi hendrix. he's fine
Little wing is a top 5 Jimi song. Incredible guitarist but psychedelics should sponsor this album
Not sure what to think. Two very good tracks, castles made of sand and bold as live, but a lot of it so loose it feels like song sketches which act as a backdrop for Hendrix to drape his guitar around and through. There a little lack of solidity. But I will listen again.
Have on vinyl: YesX2 Rating: 7.5 Fav Song: Castles Made of Sand Notes: 1st track is annoying. Overall it's OK but pretty meh. Would go 2.5 stars if that were an option
A classic but one that doesn't do much for me personally.
Had its moments but never fully got into it.
A lot of forgetable filler
Little Wing and Castles Made of Sand stand out here. Problem is that only represents about 5 combined minutes of the album. The rest is not bad but feels more like filler than stand alone material.
My first experience (sorry) with Hendrix. It was alright. Obviously they're all talented instrumentalists and Hendrix in particular was a very gifted guitarist, but the songs just aren't there. The players may be great, but the songs never quite reach greatness. It's alright-to-good but not really more than that.
I'm sure this was forward thinking at the time, and it not that it's bad but I won't be back. Good to catch up on hendrix facts though. Guitarist for little Richard, madness. High 3.
It’s a good album. Not quite as good as “Are You Experienced?”. “Bold as Love” is the standout song. 3/5 Might listen again
I've never really listened to Hendrix, but maybe I will going forward. This is a groovy album, I can see why hippies loved this stuff, pretty far out maaaaaan
Pretty good Hendrix. He's a legend for a reason. I didn't hear any of the iconic songs I know and I'm not a huge fan of his style that much anyways. 3.5 / 5
Spanish Castle Magic got a good solo Wait until Tomorrow is a class song If 6 was 9 underrated
Das war schräg, aber irgendwie gut, ich mag wieso auch immer seine Stimme richtig gerne.
His death is a loss.
Some of my favorite Hendrix songs are on this album. That said, there are a lot of forgettable songs on here
jo men ganska gött sound emellanåt
Ja legendär. Wahnsinns Gitarrischt. Hät sich aber leider im Drogesumpf verlore
hahah scho denkt, exp und up from the skies isch echl en langsame ahfang gsi, spanish castle magic isch uuhuere geil! die lieder flüged ja ah eim verbii if 6 was 9 isch seehr cool, wieder chli langsamer aber tut am album guet findi hahaha oh scho fertig?? hmm ja ich han freud gha aber d lieder sind chli ah mier verbii und s hetmi schnell verlore spanish castle agic isch suuuper guets 3?
Little Wing is such an amazing song - and yes, Jimi Hendrix was an amazing guitarist and pioneer within guitar playing. I do like some of the other songs on here, but I prefer some of his other albums over this.
blacked out because I am anxious and did not really listen to this 3/5
solid listen but didn't hook me
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
You cannot hear Jimi!
.
I've never actually listened to a full Jimi Hendrix album, but I do get why at the time that this album came out and their debut album was such a beautiful a deal! He was pushing the boundaries way before he stepped on the stage but my God he was amazing in his guitar work and it shows even in the opening of the album! Solid album would listen again!
Classic guitar rock from Jimi Hendrix
It was ok. A little bit chaotic.
- entspannt, aber war irgendwie seehr Hintergrundmusik für mich, da kaum etwas gesondert herausgestochen hat 2,75 / 5
My first album to listen on this journey. Nice.
Guitar slaps but not really blown away
It was good, I enjoyed it. The opening “Exp” was kind of weird haha. Overall it was very groovy and funky.

Not a big Hendrix fan. Some of his tunes will hit me in a good way when the timing is right, but for the most part, just not a big fan of his music. Best song for me is if 6 Was 9. Thankful the classic rock stations cut off the extended version with all the flute shit. F the flute. Spanish Castle Magic, Castles Made of Sand and Little Miss lover are other tunes that were solid. Overall pretty decent, just not my preferred musical taste 3
Lmao. Jimi may be my primary example of music I feel like I grew out of. I used to love everything he made but as I've aged, I recognize that he was a great and revolutionary guitar player, but I've pared the stuff I like back down to a greatest hits album. Back in the day though, Axis was always my least favorite of all of the "Experience" albums. It's too psychedelic for me which is exemplified by the intro song of an alien doing an interview and then beaming up to its ship or something. This album does have one of my favorite Jimi Hendrix songs though, and that's Little Wing. I love the melody and guitar tone of that song so much. I just wish it was longer. Shout out Yellow Ledbetter for basically ripping it off wholesale. Pearl Jam is lame except for that one album. As a whole I think AXIS is pretty boring and aimless. Particularly compared to the other two Experience albums. 3
3.5 I know I’m not really breaking any new ground here, but this is probably the weakest of Henrix’s three albums. I admittedly owe a re-listen to Electric Ladyland (and I’m sure I will before this list is done), but coming off the heels of their debut, this just doesn’t seem to have the same raw energy or punch to it that that does - or all the classics contained within for that matter. Still, there are some great songs here, with Spanish Castle Magic being one of my personal favorites from The Experience across their entire catalogue. It’s funny, I originally discovered the song through the first Guitar Hero game, where they, for whatever reason, decided to make the song an instrumental. Regardless, I still always liked and played the track, and so I was pretty mind-blown to learn years later that vocals are indeed supposed to accompany it - which improves it a lot in my opinion. Castles Made of Sand is another top-tier Hendrix song for me as well, and it probably contains what I would consider the best lyrics of his entire discography - it always gives me a bit of existential thought, but I think mostly in a good way. Outside of those two, I don’t really have a ton of praise to throw around. Little Wing is pretty good, but I never quite got all the hype surrounding it - it’s definitely far from what I consider among the group’s best, especially being that it almost feels like it’s over before it even starts. I also used to like the song If 6 Was 9, but conversely, it felt a bit too long to me here - not sure if I’m used to a shorter, single version? The rest of this is pretty middling, though I was surprised to see that another member of the band had a penned song with a vocal lead on the album. It’s not particularly great - if anything, it’s mostly a reminder of what Jimi has that separates him from every other artist of the era - but as far as that sort of inclusion goes, it could certainly be a lot worse. That all to say, you can’t deny Hendrix is truly a one-of-a-kind artist, and I think this proves that even his lesser offerings are still pretty good. While this doesn’t quite capture the greatness of his other records, there’s nothing bad to be found, and I enjoyed my time with it here.
Good album, some amazing songs and some I didn't feel too strongly about. Would relisten
Some big hits on here but not every song was great and some not so good.
Pretty decent, I liked some of the songs.
First Hendrix album, solid listen, nothing really stood out to me, but at the same time, nothing sounded bad or terrible. If there's more than 1 Bob Marley album in this list, there's bound to be more Hendrix and I look forward to listening to more.
I've listened to Hendrix's debut album a while back and wasn't impressed by it. Considering his reputation, I wanted to relisten to it for some time, since my understanding and taste in music have changed considerably since then. After listening to Axis: Bold as Love, I no longer think this is necessary, since the problems I've found with this album are largely the same. Although I feel like Axis is an overall improvement at production quality, the main issue remains the same—Hendrix just can't write good music consistently. There's some genuine greatness here, and it’s hard to deny how good Jimi Hendrix is at playing guitar, but the rest sounds like generic psych/blues rock. From the two albums from him that I've heard, I would describe his music as "sparks of brilliance in the sea of mediocrity." To be fair, this is probably not his fault. As Hendrix, along with The Beatles, is seen as one of the biggest trendsetters in rock, it's the other bands that sound like him, not the other way around. But how good or bad the music was back when it was released is entirely irrelevant to how good it is today. And today Axis is still good but unimpressive. 7/10
impressiona pelo contexto mas eu não sou tanto o alvo nao
Fine. Trippy acid rock.
Guitar very very good. Everything else okay I guess
FAVO: Wait until tomorrow, Little Wing, If 6 was 9, One rainy wish
Don't think I ever listened to this in its entirety, despite loving Little Wing + If 6 Was 9 + Castles Made of Sand (to a lesser degree). Unfortunately this dive didn't end up resulting in the discovery of any other truly strong songs. Maybe One Rainy Wish, but that's about it.
Experientment songs aside pretty okay album, with Little Wing being a standout
Little Wing is a special song. But a lot of this was just ok. 3/5
On Axis: Bold as Love, Jimi paints outside of the lines with pure chaos as his Stratocaster brushes against an alternative universe. Disruption and distortion is the name of the game on a lot of Jimi’s records but especially this one. I admire his guitar play as I always have since first listening to him in high school. Of course there were some songs that transported me to the many worlds Jimi has created for us music lovers. However, it was hard to sink into this record as a whole. Before I go, I must say - If it wasn’t for Jimi then we wouldn’t have a lot of the guitarists and sounds we hear today. Thank you for that Jimi! Favorites: Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, One Rainy Wish
Some amazing guitar as you’d expect from jimmy with Spanish Castle Magic and You got me floating great songs. Overall decent album but won’t rush back with Electric Ladyland remaining Jimi’s best work by far
Enjoyed this more than Meat Is Murder but I don't think I'll rush to listen to the full thing again
You know I know I was supposed to like this but I didn’t in its entirety. Some supper cool sounds but also I wasn’t thrilled about going back for a 2nd listen. Nothing I liked that I did not already know I did. Also why did I give moby a 4 it had thrown off this whole scoring thing and they are both 3. - ambivalence with a banger or two thrown in
Has some great moments, like ‘Little Wing’ and ‘If 6 Was 9,’ but it didn’t hit the same highs as other Hendrix albums I’ve heard. The creativity and talent are clear, but a few tracks didn’t stand out as much. It’s a good album, just not my favourite.
Good record but not one I'll necessarily go back to. Bold as Love a 10/10 closer though.
Nothing special, moving on
The vibe is spacey and unpredictable. Jimi's guitar playing is sharp, but feels like it’s floating. It reminds me a little of early Pink Floyd but louder and more chaotic. It’s creative and bold, though not always focused.
Flashes of something special but it didn't fully come together for me. Bold as Love was my fave by a lot. 3.5 stars.
not for me.
Not as impactful or as essential as the debut, "Are you Experienced" which was a hard act to follow, but still a good second album from Hendrix. There are a couple of "hits", but overall a more low-key record that shows that Jimi is more than a guitar god with a wider range of material with less effect.
Little Wing stops me dead in my tracks every time I hear it, whether it's Jimi's version or SRV's. Such a beautiful song, which really should be at least 50% longer. There is a lot on this album I like, but there is just enough "filler" and weird shit (Exp) for me to not be able to rate this album four stars. 3.99
It was good. I liked it better than the other Hendrix (3rd album) I already had. Actually appreciated the short songs!
Jimi is a good songwriter and an easy contender for GOAT guitarist, but he's always struggled to put together a consistent album. Great highlights, with a lot of filler.
It was ok
Rock, 1967 -> 2-3
Jangly and experimental with a few outstanding numbers (Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, Bold as Love). A little obnoxious for my liking, bass and guitar shine.
Vermoeiend om te luisteren tijdens het werken
I'm sorry, I just don't think I understand Jimi Hendrix. I WANT to like it more, but its just ok. I guess at least the songs are all short? I did like Little Wing.
I'm sure it was Bold as Love for the time, but Hendrix failed to live up to his legendary name for me. Removed from the context of his time, I can't appreciate what he brought to the table. 2.5/5
Not a huge fan of rock but it was a nice listen
It feels like a cop out to have this many songs just f a d e a w a y . . . Favourite track: Castles Made of Sand.
I am going to commit a sort of sacrilege here. I am not really a big fan of Jimi Hendrix. Never have been. BUT (!) it IS to do with the classic guitar as absolute focus genre, and not his abilities or talents. I am not a guitar worshiper. The music must touch me in an emotional sort of way, regardless of instrument, etc. ANY band or musician can and often do have songs I like regardless of their overall catalog, and Jimi Hendrix is no different. But in general, and for example, this album. Meh. Just me, Just sayin'
Pretty sweet
Good guitar and drums, some parts are a bit boring though. 3.5
I’ve never really gotten into Hendrix. I always liked the vibe but I feel he never really wrote one proper song.
3.5/5 - very good, but it’s not an album I would put in my rotation. Standout tracks: - House Burning Down (4/5) - All Along The Watchtower (5/5) - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (5/5)
An album I never knew existed, and with no songs I ever heard before, despite the fact that Hendrix was/is quite popular.
Enjoyed listening, even though this is not my favorite album by Hendrix. Favorite was “If 6 was 9”. Lyrics and Hendrix’s style of singing went well with the amazing guitar work. Second choice this time listening is Little Wing. It was the music not the lyrics that made it great. Mmm, i could say that about almost every song on the album.
I know Jimi Hendrix is, like, a big deal, but even though this is from the 60s, it sounds like the 70s to me (full offense). Nothing particularly unpleasant, surely better than yesterday's weird electro instrumental, but for me this was just OK. highlights: 'Wait Until Tomorrow', 'You Got Me Floatin'', 'She's so Fine' (idk why a British man is randomly singing this one, but I was like a baby doing one of those phonology experiments where they put in a distractor sound. my head was turnt!)
Ei täysi hittiparaati, mutta pitää varpaillaan: näköjään kaaos on hallintaa ja raskaus keveyttä. Äläkä unohda soulia.
I can tell there are drugs that this would sound great with.
It was fine
For me, not bad- not great. The album felt a little samey as it went on- with most songs just transitioning into wild guitar solos and then nondescript thrashing.. At points it felt like the track was going to overheat and catch fire.. which might have been cool back in the 60s, but in today's world, not so much.. I mean look at what an unassuming fridge started at Grenfell. I appreciate Hendrix was known for his guitar playing skills, and if you have a penchant for that sort of thing you'd probably enjoy this a lot more.. however I lacked the audial dexterity to tell the difference between the guitar solos. To me, it was a bit like a footballer who's really good at doing keepie uppies.. it's good for a bit, then you're cant help but wish they'd pack it in for a minute pass just pass the ball around. In fairness to Jimi Hendrix and the album, I dont believe listening to this on spotify does the music much justice. Hearing this live in the full swing of the sixties would have undoubtedly been more captivating, and if nothing else, something to help take your mind off the inevitable genital herpes you were going to get lumbered with.. instead of sitting at home, not on drugs, arsing about with a tax return. 3 out of 5, good in parts, but not really for me- got too full up on guitar, too quickly.
The second installment in the Jimi Hendrix Experience trilogy, Axis: Bold as Love, is, for me, the least remarkable of the three. That’s not to say it’s a bad album—this is Hendrix we’re talking about, so of course it’s fantastic. But compared to the explosive debut of Are You Experienced and the sheer ambition of Electric Ladyland, this one feels a little less impactful. That said, the inventiveness here is astounding. Hendrix’s ability to bend and shape sound is unparalleled, and tracks like Spanish Castle Magic showcase his unparalleled talent. Listening to this album inevitably raises the age-old question: what if Hendrix had lived past 27? The fact that he released three iconic albums in just over a year is mind-blowing. It’s impossible not to wonder what he could have created in the decades that followed. Standout Track: Spanish Castle Magic Score: 3/5
-This is cool, makes me want to grow my hair really long and protest the Vietnam War or something. I would honestly like to give it another listen sometime because I feel like I missed some stuff. Solid 3.5 probably? -The guitar and rhythms are definitely the best part imo, but he has a really good voice -Favorites are Wait Until Tomorrow and Ain’t No Telling
It’s Jimi Hendrix so of course his music must be great as it’s the cool thing to say right! I can’t say I’ve ever been massively into his music and this album doesn’t really do anything to change my mind. I mean it’s alright but none of the songs are really that great and it just doesn’t quite do it for me. I think it might be the singing element of the songs. I think maybe if Jimi just released instrumental tracks I’d probably enjoy it more.
I guess I was expecting great things from our Jimmy. The album is good, he is clearly talented and the songs are interesting and complex, they just don’t quite grab me as much as I’d anticipated. Hopefully the next one of theirs will.
Jimi is such a legendary figure that you’ve heard all the big songs so you just expect his albums to be a massive riff and solo fest. Sadly, they aren’t. This is the second album we’ve had, and it’s a kinda rinse and repeat review. He’s a fantastic guitarist, and there are amazing parts to songs. Noel and Mitch are about as good a rhythm section as you can get. However, Jimi just ain’t the greatest song writer or vocalist. I find the slower bluesier stuff not massively exciting, so it is the better known numbers that stand out more. Tbh when it comes to Jimi, I’d rather listen to a live album or watch videos of him playing. That’s just seems to bring so much more of his personality through than the recorded album format.
I want yo like him more but apart from his classics, overrated.
3+
i enjoyed it
Classics
That's not my taste in music. But ok.
It was fine, but nothing really grabbed me.
Probably my favourite album of his I’ve heard 6/10
It’s not clear to me, beyond the notable commercial hits, what there is to value in Hendrix’s catalog. The rhythm and melodies are too busy and unimaginative. They become repetitive. There’s a real lack of creative breadth there. I’m just not impressed
Hendrix’s last full-length record is nowhere near as experimental as Electric Ladyland, nor does it reach the highs of his debut, but more importantly, it very much contains the soul of a supremely talented musician. While you could argue it was a weak record to be his last, it’s only that way in comparison
Really wanted to be into this because my Hendrix knowledge is limited. I listen to it 4 times through and while it was fine, I probably wouldn't go back to it right away.
chitarra top non mi piace la sua voce
Psychedelic is just not my taste, but I totally get why it’s listed here. I mean, it’s Jimi. Enjoyed ‘If 6 Was 9’, ‘You Got Me Floatin'’ and the final part of ‘Bold as Love’. Great guitar, amazing band play, love every instrumental part. But, kinda exhausted when the vocal start to talk his own talk. Sorry man I don’t really enjoy human talking. 6/10 for all the LSD feelings this album offered me. Thank you Jimi.
Pretty good but I feel cannot stand up to their first album. Still an enjoyable listen.
pre: don't know this album per se, but I know a ton of songs on it. Esp looking forward to hearing the studio version of wait until tomorrow; the live at the BBC version is one of my faves. Man, I get almost angry when I hear a song like Up From The Skies. Like, it's fine? I guess? But knowing how little output we would ultimately get from JH, simple little tracks like that seem like such a waste. Not that that's his fault for not displaying his genius on every single song, but still I liked this much better than Electric Ladyland. It's funny to me how well his guitar playing has aged and how quaint his lyrics seem.
I like this one more than the other Hendrix album we had a few days ago. I imagine it would feel even more impactful if I were listening to it when it was first released. I think as a general statement I prefer Jimi’s more structured songs with some of his guitar genius thrown in vs the live ot more free flowing stuff. Overall though I thought this was a great listen.
I liked it. I knew most of these songs before listening but not all -- beyond a few hokey lines about hippies and such there wasn't a whole lot to be picky about.
7,5/10 Highlights Up From the Skies Wait Until Tomorrow Little Wing
His songwriting is not for me, but I marvel at his talent
Songs: Castles Made of Sand
A classic but some of the electric guitar is jarring
We enjoyed it but wasn't hugely a standout album. Started stronger than it finished.
Good album
I listened to this one a month or two ago and remember it being alright. I've never been a diehard Jimi Hendrix guy though
It's Jimi H
Psychedelic music composed with mastery of the guitar only Hendrix could have achieved. The man is really good at what he does, that’s undeniable. But it just isn’t for me; it took me a while to get through the album as I was way overstimulated. The feedback and fuzziness was taking me out of it. It’s still impressive though.
didn't do much for me, only listened a few times
Enjoyed listening to this and it surely would have been revolutionary at the time, but no memorable tracks for me aside from Wait Until Tomorrow and Bold as Love. Just not my thing!
thank god for side B of this album.
Legend!!
I really like Jimi Hendrix but this album not so much, Little Wing is great but the rest doesn't do a huge amount for me. I do appreciate that the list generated this album for me 1 day and Disraeli Gears by Cream the next, I thought for a long time that Sunshine Of Your Love was Hendrix
fun rock/psychedelic album that highlights jimi's guitar skills. Sort of listened in the background, but still good.
it was fine
First, this isn't as good as his debut or Electric Ladyland. You can disagree, but most don't. (Of course, it's ultimately subjective, but the ratings put this as 3rd or 4th of his albums). As for the debut and Electric Ladyland, I would give them 8 or 9 out of 10. So a solid 4 stars, maybe 5. This isn't as good. One a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 7, so 3.5 stars. I sort of hate to round down because there's some very mediocre 3 star albums on here, but there's also some pretty good ones that just quite get rounded up to 4. This is one of those.
All the songs kinda blend together. Hendrix is definitely a “greatest hits” kinda group.
3☆/5 09.22.2024
Prodigious talent, to be sure, but not every song kept my attention.
no doubting his guitar talent, but this album was not as strong as his first
Ok
