Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Good album. This one isn’t as good as the other two as it has less hits but it’s still Hendrix and he doesn’t make anything less than average. 7.9/10
Loved this, especially One Rainy Wish
It had some really good songs. It was a fun album. First time I have heard this from start to finish
Not my favorite Hendrix album, but solid all the way through.
Good. Some definite bangers in there. Appreciated many of the slower jams. Instrumentation on point as expected.
Loved this album. An ageless guitar driven masterclass. Could listen to Little Wing for hours
Very relaxed and I love the sixties sound. The album was over before I knew it. Have not listened to the lyrics, just the flow and instruments.
Glad I got this, a solid album. Before listening to it I only knew like 3 of Jimi’s songs but this one got me a bit hooked ngl. Favs: Little Wings, Castles Made of Sand, Bold as Love, One Rainy Wish.
Excellent any time of the day. Will listen again
This album reminds me of being a kid and my dad blasting music while cooking dinner. My senses would be overwhelmed by the vibration of the noise and the smells from the kitchen. It's that kind of unsettled wonder of being dipped into someone else's world from before you existed.
Good old guitar rock.
I've never heard this album, but I've heard several singles from it - Castles made of sand, Spanish castles, 69, little wing, and bold as love. The other songs in the album really bring it together. One thing that surprised me here was how ahead of their time his producer was with stereo sound. They make it known from that first track that they're going to use stereo to its full effect. Highly recommend listening in stereo for the full album. Favorite song: don't make me choose - see above. Least favorite song: She's so fine (what the heck was that?)
Time after time I have a mood for psychedelic rock. Then it does not get any better than the father of psy-guitar himself - Jimi Hendrix. This album is full of many great songs and incredible (incredible) guitar work. Still, the biggest surprise for me was how amazing it sounds 50 years later - the production techniques still work, the guitar sounds are trippy af and everything is super clear and hearable - many classic records from the 60s (even remaster versions) are just not the same.
Not Hendrix’s strongest album, certainly the albums either side of this one are stronger overall. Like all Hendrix albums it lacks a little cohesion and is thematically/lyrically a bit silly. Nonetheless the Hendrix, Redding, Mitchell trio again here show their creative and technical prowess and Axis is more than deserving of its place on this list. Spanish Castle Magic is a raw and exciting psychedelic rock song and stands up against the likes of Purple Haze, Foxey Lady and Voodoo Chile, but it’s the softer side of this album where it really shines; Little Wing is just gorgeous, Castles in the Sand is breathtaking - two great examples of the genius of this man. The greatest ever.
some groundbreaking stuff - 3-4 amazing songs.
Still a classic forgotten how good it was.
love me some Jimi
Mostly great---
Rock solid.
one of a very small number of genuine innovators
obviously incredible guitar, listened to this bad boi with headphones and that was an experience to be sure. At some points the sound was a bit overwhelming even
7.5
An album you need to dive in to find its treasures… it’s worth the effort
It's okay, but it is not a master piece
Pretty good but not as good as EL
Veldig kult.
Very good. Still prefer the debut and Electric Ladyland. 8/10 1. Little Wing 2. Castles Made of Sand 3. Spanish Castle Magic
this is one album, that if you listen to, only having heard Hendrix's hits, will honestly make you question how more of his music didn't make it on the air. this is an amazingly crafted piece of musical history, and is inspiration for countless bands and musicians out there.
Some classic guitar songs on here like Little Wing, but only a couple of these songs really make me want to listen to again.
As soon as it started I thought "this is going to be awesome." And it more or less was.

Spacey
I didn't recognize a single riff from any song in this album, so that means I probably hadn't heard any of these before. Classic rock like this is enjoyable to listen to, but it's not a cornerstone of who I am. So whether I hear a great album or a mediocre album, they both kind of hit me as "ok". I appreciate this though, and especially in comparison to Hawkwind, I appreciate the length.
Hard to believe this came out only seven months after "Are You Experienced". Standout on this listen was "Ain't No Telling"
Not a lot of hit singles on this one, but it doean't matter because the album is amazing as a whole. Hendrix's style is just great and it's hard for me not to like whatever he's recorded.
Great album. A lot of my favs on there like Little Wing and Castles Made of Sand.
Familiarity: 1/10 Notes: Although I'm familiar with his legacy and live career, I have not listened to much studio Jimi Hendrix. This album exceeded by expectations sonically and was a journey worth taking Real Rating: 7.5/10
I mean, yeah, it's Hendrix.
Wonderful. Never given it a full listen and its psychedelic as fuck
Enjoyed this, never really spent much time listening to Hendrix. Stand-out song was Spanish Castle Magic
Hendrix can play the guitar, that’s obvious. Singing is secondary, but he’s solid at that too.
I feel like when I listen to an album like this I start off like 'I'm a rocker, I've forgotten this, I love this shredding shit' and then by the end my head hurts. I went on a long run and listened to this, it was a bit warm too so my head wanted to explode by the end. That being said this was exactly what I needed.
Good start, having never listened to Jimi before. One or two songs to take away
A lot of innovation. Never listened to the whole thing before. Glad I did.
Classic psychedelic rock. Lots of great tracks not his best but very good
Unsettling swirling stereo mix on intro and some songs, otherwise as awesome as expected from Hendrix.
Love this album
Not my favorite Hendrix, but a damn good album regardless.
Expnsd
Some great tracks on here, I'm sure super influential, but some ones I don't really care for too. The intro is legit awful. But a really cool and a really ahead of its time album
More enjoyable than I remember.
Hendrix's creative genius is on full display here. Occasionally drifts into "pushing boundaries that don't need to be pushed" territory. Best track: Little Wing
Great alb but not my fav Jimi. Although Little Wing and If 6 was 9 are top 5 Jimi songs
Liked it a lot. Interesting to see the mix of sonic experimentation and blues songwriting.
I was only really familiar with "Little Wing" for the most part, but this was a darn good record. Guitar work was (obviously) very strong, but I did like the songs as a whole.
I'm still getting surprised by the amount of noise in certain old records. This was some excellent guitar music. Less energy than, say, a James Brown, but more refined and similar in terms of flourish. I imagine I need to listen to live recordings to hear the band really jam.
Castles Made of Sand might be my favourite Hendrix song.
classic. not so many of the hits on this one, but great overall
The Hendrix album I’m least familiar with.... but it’s just excellent obviously. No guitarist comes close!
There's good stuff here but it feels like something is holding Jimi Hendrix back on this album. Several of the songs feel like they fade out while there's still more to explore/play. It makes me feel like there's a producer trying to reel in what shouldn't have been contained. The hit, "Little Wing," is definitely one of the worst victims. I think the "If 6 Was 9" is one of the better tracks here because it feels fully explored. I did like Castles Made of Sand. It's shorter, but without feeling overly truncated. Even that sounds like it's supposed to explode into guitar histrionics and then just doesn't. I might need a few more listens to appreciate this record for what it is instead of focusing on what's lacking, but I feel like I'd never get beyond that first impression to fully connect with this. It feels like half an album... but the half that's missing is taken from each song.
I think this may be a rare case where the sophomore album isn’t as good as the freshmen album (being “Are you Experienced”). Potentially worth less than the sum of its parts, there were some great tracks, but overall it didn’t feel like this album showcased Jimi’s guitar skills as well as it could have
A decent version of what is not really my thing. Love Little Wing though. Perfect song.
Tbh I didn’t get very far in this, for lack of interest. After listening to the first half, it just didn’t grab me.
i guess this was my first Jimi Hendrix Album ever. Mostly good stuff
10/10 album cover. Has my favourite Hendrix song on it (Castles Made of Sand), but seems uneven. Highlighting Hendrix' vocals (and Noel Redding's?) seem to be missing the fact that all we really want is Jimi shredding.
Music I admire more than I enjoy….it should be on this list, but it’s not for me. My loss I suspect. 3
1. exp really interesting opening to an album I love when there’s talking in albums now it’s just static interesting creative choice… 2. Up from the skies in the early moments I wasn’t a fan but it grew on me the guitar is really impressive like the variety of tones and sounds also his adlibs are fun 3. Spanish magic castle! instantly a fan 🪭 woahhhhh it’s good 4. Wait until tomorrow !very very groovy I’m liking it guitar is fun, if the 60s was a song it would be this song the riff is very good 5.aint no telling! i like her drums are great 6. Little wing ! the first few sounds are so beautiful the sound like just the sound is so good all the instruments sound so good together 7. If 6 was 9 guitars are incredible here and lil bit of poetry 8.you got me floatin has me floatin 9. Castles made of sand so good !! I think one of the best 10. She’s so fine SHES SO FIRE🔥🔥🔥 11. It’s gooood 12.fun beats got lots of personality 13. Bold as love !
groovy, got to give the album that. feels like a "concept" album with the complexity, and parts of it felt too much. enjoyed parts of it.
Pretty cool, wasn't life changing for me though. Favourite tracks: Spanish Castle Magic, Ain't No Telling, Little Wing, If 6 Was 9.
Trippy, experimental, messy, but with a method. I can vibe with that to some extent, but not sure if it's exactly for me. Appreciate the artistic vision tho.
The 2d half of the album is much better than the beginng. Despite this half having the song sang by the drummer.
I appreciate some of the metal precursors here, overall it’s fine. 3/5.
3,8/5
*another* Jimi Hendrix album? Sure, fine, whatever.
Felt very cool listening to it, like walking at night in a movie about summer vacation, but personally slightly too noisy for a regular listen
Not my taste :(
Good, regular songs.
Vabandust, aga mida tulnuka algust. Annab veidi lisapunkte. Ma mõistan, miks see album on siin nimekirjas.
Jimi Hendrix is a great musician of his time, one of a kind, but i generally have a hard time enjoying or caring about his music at all
6/10
Girişi bana hitap etmedi Up from the skies: keyif verdi ve kulağıma hitap etti, benlik bir parçaydı.7/10 Spanish castle magic:3/10 Wait until tomorrow:3/10 Aint no telling: aslında güzel enerjik bir şarkı ama dinler miyim bilemedim 5/10 Little wing: Kulaklarıma adeta masaj gibi geldi 8.5/10 İf 6 was 9: 3/10 bir de uzun You got me floatin': meh 3/10 Castles made of sand:3/10 She's so fine:3 One rainy wish:3 Little miss lover:3 Bold as love:3
Nice album, it has one of my favorite Hendricks songs…Castles made of sand
A very good album cool and chill to listen can’t wait to hear his other albums and see what they are like
I think I liked this the most out of the three Hendrix album. Wasn’t necessarily as many high points but it was consistent across the track list for me.
Better than I thought it would be.
It's fine on the one hand, on the other hand it is kinda boring. I guess just summer heat affects my judgement
I didn’t enjoy this one as much as Are You Experienced but it’s still good
Hendrix is obviously a great guitar player, but some of the experiments didn’t need to be published.
Wel mooi maar niet echt mm ding
Few classics, rest weren’t that exciting to me. Maybe I’m just not a huge Hendricks fan
The guitars are all so beautiful and powerful. My fav song on this album is "She's So Fine" where the bassist sings instead of Jimi. The guitars on the song are so freaking good. I find that I love the instrumentals of most of the songs, but I don't care much for the way Hendrix sings. I think that's why I like "She's So Fine". I really like Noel Redding's English accent. Overall, I think a lot of the vocal effects are a bit too much for me. I do appreciate the lyrics of his songs, though.
I think I'm just not a fan of recorded improvisation for the most part. I can hear how good he is and yet.
Thought some were really good like Little Wing, but didnt care for all of them. 3.5
Alright
Solid.but not as hooky as I would have liked
Once again nothing really stands out to me it’s just a solid listen.
It's Jimi. It's good.
I remember listening as a teen, playing every chord I could wrap my fingers around. Still a fun experiment in music to hear this album
It's a good album and the drums go hard. Obviously Jimi's guitar playing is great, but not sure if I click with this album as much as I do with his others. Standout songs: Spanish Castle Magic, Castles Made of Sand, Bold as Love. Castles are good
jumpscare opener
Hendrix rocks, but this album was alright.
2.5
After the explosive success of Are You Experienced?, The Jimi Hendrix Experience returned later the same year with their follow-up project Axis: Bold as Love. I am not going to live this project doesn't hit nearly as hard as it should in my eyes and is easily the weakest album output Jimi ever directly worked on in his life. Axis feels a bit rushed with a lot of the songs not really able to expand their wings and show their full potential and instead are cut off far too soon. Most of the tracks here fall under 4 minutes in total length and really underutilize the band's guitar skills which always really frustrated me as that was the band's best part. It dumbs down a lot of the bold elements from before and makes a bunch of more calm tracks, which is a nice shake-up of things but once again I feel the really great songs are scattered rather than consistently all throughout this album. I know I might get some flack for my rating here but Axis: Bold as Love in my eyes is most certainly a underwhelming follow-up to one of the best Psychedelic Rock albums ever put out.
I've always being a greatest hits hendrix type listener so I'm thankful to get an excuse to revisit the back catalogue.
it's fine
A bit too sixties for me
Some cool stuff on here, but I feel like it didn't quite hit for me like some of Hendrix's other stuff has. Might give it another listen but right now it's like a solid 3/5
Psychedelic rock with a funky side and heavy wah. First track talks about UFOs and aliens, is this a concept album? Brilliant guitar work as expected. Shames Frusciate and RHCP 2 decades earlier. Best track - Wait Until Tomorrow 3 stars - as technically good as it is, it doesn't rock my world
Decent with a few standout tracks like Little Wing. I also realised a lot of songs sound the same.
This was a grower
Started out psychedelic but I liked it more the deeper I got. I will listen again. Added 2 songs to my playlist and already had 1.
was ok but didnt stick out
pretty nice, cool to have heard but im neutral
A lot of short songs showcasing different styles of music packaged under Jimi's singing guitar. Genres range from soul to experimental to straight-up heavy psychedelic. The end result is that it doesn't sound as tight as his debut, which I found more cohesive (3.5).
Interesting album, but not my favorite.
This album really didn't do anything for me. The singing is subpar. She's So Fine was probably my favorite song. The drums on that track are out of this world. Now, of course the best part of this album should be the guitar. It was good. I wasn't blown away at any point though. Some solid riffs. Might be crazy to say, idk. This is the first Jimi Hendrix album I've had, so maybe the others will show me what I missed here.
I'm not sure if I just had my expectations too high on this one or what. I thought it was fine, just ok. No takeaways and nothing that really caught my ear.
Favourite song was Spanish castle magic
3/5 Ganz cool.
Este cabrón era un prodigio
Decent stuff here. Little Wing has long been a favourite of mine. Overall, though, it's a good album, not a great album.
Whilst I appreciate the artistry, I do struggle with psychadelica.
Lo escuché mientras caminaba a casa
Yet another example of not every album by an amazing artist should be included in the list. This one is musically all over the place.
ascoltato superficialmente ma bello
Feel the groove
A real mix up of sounds and rhythms and great songwriting. I like the range on show.
I know he’s a genius but what was that first track?
Exp — a psychodelic, noise introduction to the album. Definitely an attention grabber. Up From The Skies — funky groove throughout. That wavy guitar is abnormal but ear-pleasing. The vocal performance is smooth and clear. Spanish Castle Magic — the energy in this song is great. The bass is loud and catchy and the lead guitar sings all over this song. Hendrix's vocal performance is also impressive with lots of expression and grit. Wait Until Tomorrow — the song doesn't take itself too seriously despite how great the guitar playing is on it. The high pitch supporting vocals aren't my favourite, but they're okay and add to the playful tone of the song. The lyrics also have charm. Ain't No Telling — short, fun, and dynamic track. Doesn't do enough to make me care for it that much, but still a nice burst of energy. Little Wing — really good guitar solo at the end of this track. The vocal effect works but doesn't blow me away; it adds a nice touch to the track. If 6 Was 9 — a confrontational song. The end is a psychodelic cacophony of woodwinds and electric guitar drones. You Got Me Floatin' — not a fan of the chorus. The guitar and the audio effects still work here as they across the album. Castles Made of Sand — interesting, emotional lyrics. The opening and closing guitar effects are dreamy. She's So Fine — not used to the vocals, especially the high pitched supporting vocals. One Rainy Wish — the opening is entrancing and smooth. The guitar swings from dreamy to energetic; might be my favourite guitar performance on the album. The lyrics are surreal. Little Miss Lover — great energy on the track. Didn't connect with me much. Bold as Love — soulful guitar playing. The whole song has a great rhythm. The sound change in the second half felt like it could've been smoother. Favourite song: Spanish Castle Magic Least favourite song: She's So Fine Overall: the sonic effects on the electric guitar steal the show on this album. While I wouldn't call any of the songs bad (or even mediocre), I personally struggled to connect with many of them. I wouldn't oppose this album playing and if a song played from it, I'd listen happily, but there aren't many songs as of now that make me go out of my way to listen to them more. Rating: 3.8
Mixed bag
Wait until tomorrow is hendrix at his melodic and loudest. The rest of the album is experimental shall we say. Still a very worthwhile exercise though and one that everyone should try at least once!
Struggled to rate this one - I suspect I have rated harshly as I prefer other Hendrix output
Trust me, I get it. It’s Jimi Hendrix and you can definitely appreciate what he doesn’t like a guitar but I don’t know how many times I’m gonna actually have him heavy in rotation, but I’ll give you this Sandcastles made out of sand 10 out of 10 along with little Wing
Never once listened to a Hendrix studio release all the way through. I’d only had “collections.” No matter the format, always impressive and interesting. Still feels like one of those artists you outgrow after college, like Morrison, Marley, or Joplin.
there isn’t muy music style
What if Hendrix wrote a bunch of Psych-ish pop radio tunes? Catchy and to the point without all of the Guitar God antics. 3.5⭐️
Groovy, experimental, very nice to listen to. However I have sound sensitivities and it was very high pitched or grating sometimes.
Yeah that's Jimi alright. It's a good album.
A little messier than Electric Ladyland and not as ambitious. Still, there’s some decent songs here, but Hendrix has never really been my jam so I could never love this.
It's Jimi Hendrix. Pretty groovy.
Not my type of music, but it was a good experience.
Solid fun listen
Really liked parts of this album and not so much others. Really cool and influential sound though. I can see why it inspired so many people to get freaky w their music lol
Listened to half of it, kind of fun, very experimental and new in the old times i feel.
Well not the best album but very cool rock
nice guitars. Fav song: Castles made of sand
Too mellow for my taste. It tended to meld into the background even when I was actively listening. I only realized it was done when Greta van Fleet kicked in with a much more insistent guitar line
not really
Nice, maar hippie-rommelig
Svolítið speisuð en rann ágætlega í gegn
Hmm, bjóst við fleiri stjörnum frá mér.
Me agrada.
Very cool, soulful, and talented musician. Though my personal enjoyment is somewhat down the middle
this album is so beautiful and very psychedelic.
The kind of album I imagine the kid from Dazed and Confused listening to at the end of the movie.
I've always been more inspired and impressed by the people that came after Hendrix who were inspired by him. But, this is still a solid album.
Love Jimi's guitar playing. Just like this
Sensing a common theme. Love the artist .... but. Maybe I'm not a deep diver? High 3 because it's Jimi.
I didn’t take as many notes while I was listening to this album, but I don’t know if I would’ve had much to say about each individual track anyway. I liked this album, though I don’t think it really has Jimi Hendrix’s best work on it. Both Are You Experienced and Electric Ladyland are also on this list, and I feel like they’re both more emblematic of Hendrix’s music than this was. However, I still liked quite a few tracks from this album. Spanish Castle Music, Little Wing, You Got Me Floating and Bold As Love were probably my favourites, and I did like She’s So Fine even though it was wildly different to the rest. Favourite song: Bold As Love
I like blues and I like rock but when they are combined for some reason it just isn't resonating as hard as I'd like it to!
That time Hendrix pretended he was The Beatles.
5 - AVERAGE
Ik zou het niet uitzetten
Good vibes throughout.
Deeply impressive, but not that fun to listen to for me, except for maybe Spanish Castle Magic.
This is my third favorite Hendrix record, where some of the deep cuts hit harder for me than the big songs. Hendrix is always a good listen, but this is not on the same level as Electric Ladyland or Are You Experienced. 3.5, rounded down just because I like the fore mentioned two better.
2.75 - It was okay. Maybe I'll like the other two Jimi albums on this list better.
Idk
This was alright, I like a few of Jimi Hendrix’s song but wouldn’t necessarily listen to an album
Good album that was joy to listen to. Best song was Spanish Castle Magic.
It's a servicable Hendrix album. The 1st album had the pop hooks and the 3rd album had the experimental godliness. This album has little of either. A lot of middling, stumbling, thrown together at the last minute bits of filler. If you ditched the filler, this would make an amazing transitional EP between Are you experienced and Electric Ladyland.
Little Wing e bra.
Gah. Obviously a good album. Is it for me? Not really.
Hendrix always had such a ‘cool’ sound but this one is slightly lacking in memorable songs.
Kitara taituruutta parhaimmillaan.
Is it bad if I rate this album a 3? Just average? Moments I really enjoyed, but felt disjointed at times… I’m a horrible person.
Crazy instrumentals Gute Laune Jeder song somehow anders?
Another album I just felt cool listening too. Will probably put it in rotation as background music but I liked it.
okeii guau
Good Album. Great Solos. But did not really hook me. Favorite Song: One Rainy Wish
OK but not my thing
Swirling music oscillating from ear to ear was pretty dizzying, but I enjoyed the harmonies, the guitar riffs, and even some of the vocals. Hendrix is a classic. I enjoyed the mixture of blues, rock, and some more experimental sound. Wouldn't reach for it but didn't struggle through it.
It's not Jimi's best, but it marked a shift to the even more psychedelic that is seen in Electric Ladyland.
Cool. Could have done with a couple more bangers.
It was a lot of just noise. And the riffs repeated making me confused thinking I was repeating songs.
Not his best album, but perhaps Jimi’s most thought provoking song is on this one. From an interview: I got the idea like when we were at Monterrey and I was just looking at everything around. So I figured that I would take everything I’d see and put it maybe in the form of a girl or something like that you know. The other hit was Castles Made of Sand. All songs are listenable (except Exp, that one doesn’t hold up at all). Still liking the psychedelia. (3.3*s) Fly on, Little Wing!
More Jimi isn't a bad thing and Axis is pretty good. Not as strong as the debut album but still got some edge and unique guitar work. Only one known track with "Castles Made of Sand." I think I will like Jimi more as a I age. For now I can appreciate the talent but his work hasn't grabbed me yet. I put this one a bit higher than Electric Lady Land at 2.64 stars.
Enjoyed it. Sounded similar to the other one we've had though
I didn’t enjoy this one as much as “Are you Experienced.” I did come away from the listening appreciating Jimi’s guitar work. I really enjoyed Bold as Love and Little Wing but it wasn’t a “listen the whole way through for me.”
From a guitar tech perspective this album probably blew minds and changed the game for the rest of rock history, but guitar performance, tech, and recording aside, to me this seems a tedious example of songwriting and vocal performance. Jimi Hendrix can clearly play the hell out of the guitar, but his singing is atrocious, and album seemed like a psychedelic slog even though it was only 39 minutes long. I admit that I am not among the core audience that this album was created for. I am not, and have never been, a guitar player. The highlight: "Wait Until Tomorrow". Nothing else stood out to me. It is difficult for me to rate this album. I don't enjoy it, but I understand its place in the development of pop, rock, and alternative history, and I am a fan of Mitch Mitchell, and it is the origin of Paul Allen's EXPerience Music Project in Seattle, which is pretty cool, so a 3 it is.
No doubt a sick sounding album, but no song really stood out to me or made me want to listen to them more
Not as good as I thought I would be
it's good but not really impressive
3/10
This is the 2nd Hendrix album in a matter of weeks and it is very similar to the first one
I played it two or three times and the music just ran over my head. It’s definitely not bad but I also find it difficult to appreciate the album.
Not bad, first song was a bit odd.
diddlididdlididdlidiiiii
An interesting choice for a Hendrix album. I'm betting there is probably a second one on the list. This was all new to me. I grooved with it. Not entirely my thing so won't likely see another rotation, but I appreciate what's being laid down here.
The wiki says this album was released seven months after experienced and it sounds like it, a bit rushed and missing any obvious hits. Not bad, has the unique Jimi sound but I was waiting for the standouts and they never came. 2.5.
It is decent, but not a patch on Are You Experienced, or Electric Ladyland. Little Wing was probably my favourite track - the intro sounds like a completely different song and I really like the use of bells.
Not my favorite but it’s Jimmy, so 3 stars.
My heart sank when this came up. Imagined an album of 20 minute guitar solos. But actually much lighter and more fun than I expected
Little too psychedelic for me, but still some good rock here n there. It has quality.
Es okay
Good album but nothing on his other albums. Cool psychedelic rock album with some soul/bluesy elements. Some good guitar bits but he for sure has better. No immediate standouts, but fave songs: -little wing - castles in the sand - she’s so fine
A little over two weeks ago I got (had) to listen to Are You Experienced. I was very underwhelmed, mostly because I'd heard every song about a million times on classic rock radio back in the 80's. I was never much of a fan, and I gave that album a three star rating mostly for the obvious talent. I was once again not excited to see this come up today. Looking at the tracklist what struck me was that there's only one song I knew. I figured this could either be a good thing or a bad thing. Initially I'd say it was good. I liked the introduction with Exp and Up From The Skies. I was thinking that just hearing his songs too much might've been the issue, and maybe I might actually enjoy this album. But then came a bunch of songs that sounded exactly like the ones on his debut, with a bit more studio fuckery to make it psychedelic rather than just bluesy. I like the song Little Wing, mainly due to Pearl Jam playing it and having seen them perform it last year. I still like their version better. There were moments as the album progressed that I liked, but then the songs would just go back to the same general sound. I actually felt more disappointed by this listen, as it initially seemed I might enjoy it more than I actually did.
Certainly a skilled musician, but nit my cup of tea. The Album is not bad by any means, but alright at most.
STEREOWOWOWOW!
Not consistent enough for Hendrix:(
weird. funk. poetry. Probably a million subtle music thingies i am not able to appreciate. Very hippie.
it was okay
Unfortunately, I've never been huge on this one. It's easily the mildest of the classic Hendrix trilogy, and a super downgrade from 'Are You Experienced' in my opinion. It's not worse per se, the fire, passion, and oomph in Hendrix's playing and singing are still here, but it's certainly less noisy, energetic, and blood-pumping when compared to its older brother. Instead, it opts for these open, meditative, and oftentimes directionless jammy bits that draw from the worlds of psychedelia more than anything. It works quite well on a few songs. 'Little Wing' will always be one of Hendrix's best songs, and 'One Rainy Wish' remains one of his most soulful songs and is far more dynamic than many of the other songs here. And I love that tremolo picking on the closing 'Bold As Love', it's again one of his slower RnB type tracks that actually goes over pretty well. But I just don't think there's enough interesting happening on a good chunk of these songs; there's no strong sense of structure. I know it's probably a preference thing, I'll always prefer Hendrix's noiser songs to his less in-your-face songs. But I do also just think his other two main albums are better on the songwriting front in a lot of ways; there's very little memorable here, no matter how many times I end up revisiting it.
Eh
Very influential album, to guitar players especially. A few filler songs however in my opinion, but the highs are very high. Not my favourite Hendrix album but definitely not the worst. Will listen again
Some of it was cool, the other parts were crap, I thought better of you mr Hendrix
This was alr, lots of guitar obviously, that's what Hendrix was known for. He was a favourite of my grandad but it didn't do loads for me, still decent. I was in and out the room on this one so I listened less consistently. 61/100
aardig
A few great tunes. A bit experimental for me. Obviously important to music history and guitar playing.
boy was he horny wasn't he Would I listen again: Eh Deserves to be on this list: Nah 3.2
This is the 3rd Jimi Hendrix album I’ve listened to and probably the worst, not bad just boring 65/100
Pretty good this. I tapped my foot a lot. Didn't get too excited but I quite liked it
Hopefully their best album is also in this list...
Classic and love most of it. It is mesmerizing.
I am bit biased towards Jimi.
Awesome instrumentation, just not completely my vibe
It's good but it's the least best of the 3 albums and less memorable.
As far as guitar playing goes, this one (as well as its predecessor) must have been a revelation for many. Hendrix is up in the pantheon of guitar gods for a reason. Unfortunately, his genius does not extend to his song writing chops. It's an interesting album, don't get me wrong, but the songwriting is just ... fine, nothing revelatory. 3/5
very funky vibes personally not what I would go for but enjoyed it for sure for the majority
My bad again just didn’t click with me early on and then it started going in one ear and out the other. I’ll have to revisit later. But I’m sure this is worthy of a higher score but oh well 3 as a placeholder.
Idk what it is about Jimi but I don’t quite vibe with him as hard as I might try. Obviously he is a guitar maestro and all that but the showboating does nothing for me. There is something lacking for me. Definitely a singles girl when it comes to him
chill, never would have listened to otherwise.
As I restart the journey here this album was a little too experimental for me to get into right away, def added a few songs and enjoyed it and will revisit for but day one it landed at a solid 3
I'm familiar with a few of these tunes, hoping the other two albums appear on this list.
Hendrix is always incredible guitar, the question is always whether he can do something interesting to package his guitar brilliance. Listening notes: -Wow I hate this introduction so much. Something about aliens I guess, but my stereo speakers made this very unpleasant listening -Little Wing is dope, and puts a pretty high floor on the album as a whole -The slurred dazed vocals of Jimi Hendrix remain extremely distinctive, and work a lot better here, for some reason. Review: Little Wing is absolutely amazing, castles made of sand is at least memorable, but I'm not sure this album really ever reaches the heights of a 5-star album. 3.5, rounding down.
Tossing up between 2.5-3
3.5 I would so listen to this while tripping on acid. Fairly enjoyable, but not something I would listen to on my own time.
cool
Decent - talented, but not desperately engaging - Castles made of sand being the exception
In highschool, I wrote a poetry analysis of “Castles Made Of Sand” for one of my English classes. I also spent far too much time staring covetously at the Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster in my Musician’s Friend catalogs. To this day, it’s the only model that might compel me back into Strat ownership (I’m team Telecaster/Jazzmaster). Now that I’ve made those qualifiers, I wish I had better things to say about this record. It may be a critical darling, but I fear that it’s a poor entry point for the Hendrix-curious. A comparison of this record against the track listing on any CD length ‘Best Of’ album won’t return many matches, and I fear that’s because he’s just a little too wonky and indulgent here. At the risk of heresy, I'll suggest that there's a pretty wide gulf between Hendrix "Classics" and "Album Tracks"; this record has much more of the latter. You can’t expect magic when you compel an already focus-challenged musician to rush out a sophomore album. You also can't expect it when you continue to release an endless stream of previously unreleased songs that Jimi didn't see fit to put on an album in his lifetime (a rant for another day). This is a record best suited to the already confirmed Hendrix fans; leave the missionary work to the debut record, Are You Experienced.
Wow '67 is very long ago! I listened to JH before but lets see what this record has got to offer. I dont want to glaze JH just becaue he is good with the guitar so Im just going to be honest with him. As I currently listen to the record I have to say, it sounds pretty normal nothing special. Ofcourse little wing is wonderfull but that's pretty much it. Im not mad, Im just beeing real, it sounds like an average listening experience. I'll give it a 5/10 (3stars)
As with 'Electric Ladyland' all Hendrix stuff is evidently a product of 60s psychedlia. 'EXP' may have been "far out" back then, but these days it only serves to date the album. The production as always, is very muddy, and the drums always feel a bit detached from the rest of the playing. Being generous, I suppose The White Stripes' rough and ready playing can link back here. The guitar sound feels dated too most of the time - clearly a master at work with wah, phasing, backwards loops, dive-bombs which at the time would've blown guitarists away and set a bar. But it does at times feel an unnecessary distraction. Like its successor, it's not completely solid. But whilst 'Up from the Skies' feels like throwaway b-side fodder; Redding's 'She So Fine' doesn't fit at all; and 'Little Miss Lover' and 'You Got Me Floatin'' are poor versions of some of his bigger hits (the latter only notable for having Nash and Roy Wood on backing), otherwise there a decent hit rate.
I think this album is pretty chaotic. I can understand why people found it "revolutionising" in the late 60s, but a lot of the tracks in the middle are very "chaotic" with the guitar distortions. My favourite is the title track "bold as love", and there's a couple of nice ones, but overally nothing wowed me.
Hendrix is great, but there’s a lot of padding around his hits. There were a few tracks I never heard before that I really liked.
I was going to give it a two but I really liked Castles Made of Sand so that 2.5 gets bumped up.
Axis: Bold as Love feels like much of the fuzz and overwhelming volume of the group's debut has been reigned in a bit. This slightly tamed approach leaves a ton of space for Hendrix's more technical abilities to shine through, and surprise, surprise Hendrix is a very good guitarist. Axis also varies more stylistically than its predecessor. Blues-Rock, emphasis on Blues, Hendrix and his two be-afroed companions sound like a band, rather than a soloist with a backing group, as they weave in Jazz and Funk. However, while certainly not a boring listen, many of the songs are somewhat forgettable in the overarching Hendrix canon. Sure, "Castles Made of Sand", "Little Wing", "If 6 Was 9", and "Bold As Love" are fantastic, but I just don't see myself wanting to hear "You Got Me Floating" or the Redding-penned "She's So Fine" again soon. Not that these are tracks are bad, just forgettable. So, while it is, certainly, not my favorite Hendrix, it is still Hendrix and there's a lot to like here.
It was fine. I recognized a few songs. I like Jimi Hendrix, but I’m not a huge fan of his.
This is obviously a master musician. I am a little bored of this era and genre, though. Perhaps another time, guitar god.
Good
Funky sound, still looking for the “greatest guitarist of all time” sound
tuned most of it out bc it was mildly indecipherable - lots of guitar and drums - def won't add to playlist - 2.5 stars
Decent album, short and sweet. Overall fine
I liked the album just not something I would listen to daily. I know it’s a classic but I don’t think I like 60’s music much. Instrumentals are fire but yeah.
It was good just not my typical type in music. I really liked a couple song and added to my playlist!!
Side B was a lot better than Side A. Side A felt like a guided recorded jam session. B felt like an album with a theme
top 3: little wing, bold as love, one rainy wish hm: castles made of sand
groovy
I get it, but not my thing.
I like Hendrix. I like this record.
I've heard a lot of good things about Jimi Hendrix, but for the most part, I just wasn't impressed. Still solid, but I didn't really enjoy listening
I’m appreciate the man’s guitar prowess but somehow his music die m rarely moves me. On this album I kept hearing songs that reminded me of his other songs and I realized he didn’t necessarily push himself as much as he might have. So as amazing as his debut album was, this feels like more of the same. Not that I could ever get close, or many others, to his skill level. It’s just that his style stays consistent and doesn’t resonate with me.
Added 2 songs from the album to my new playlist, super groovy
Transcendent guitar that often pokes through some…static-ey? songs. There’s just a muffled quality to the sound that I can’t get over. I’d pay good money to hear Jimi record some songs on modern equipment
No es mi estilo. Muy repetitivo el sonido a veces.
Things just don'T seem to click between Jimi and I. I recognize his talent and influence, but I'm not really that interested in hearing his music to be honest
Weird sounds A few good guitar songs but nothing particularly noticeable Very sensual, think strip tease
It took a while for this one to get going. Psychedelic rock is a genre that has never clicked with me. The markers that identify this genre have never agreed with me... messing with stereo and sounds fading in and out, fuzziness, etc. The last 3 or 4 songs seemed a little more trad rock which I liked. Bold as Love is a cool song.
Band of Gypsys er noe eget.
Little Wing er legendarisk da.
Pretty funky, maybe less so than I expected
It was okay. I’m just trying to imagine a time where all these guitar “tricks” were new. It must have blown peoples’ minds. I would have liked some of the songs to be longer to showcase Jimi’s playing. The songs were catchy. “You Got Me Floating” is an ear worm.
Always a decent listen. As a young guitarist Jimi's albums really spoke to me. I felt his guitar playing and singing were a talk and response that seemed to carry so much attitude. I haven't listen to him in a long time, and my tastes have changed, but the feeling remains the same
Don't get me wrong I like a bit of Jimi as everyone does, but I don't think I've ever heard the songs from this album. They're fine, none particularly bad or excellent. Feels like this is only on here due to the artist's infamy/limited discography.
