Reviews (page 6 of 7)

If this was on at the bar I was at, I would leave

Kinda dumb album. It's not that bad but it doesn't really do anything.

Huh, seems that I really can't stand The Cult? The best part of the album is the run from 'Love Removal Machine' (a ripoff of 'Start Me Up'), 'Born To Be Wild' (still worse than the original), and the NWBHM-ish 'Outlaw'.

If it wasn’t for the horrendous cover of “Born To Be Wild”, this would have been a 3 / 5. I prefer The Cult and Ian Astbury over a lot of hard rock acts, but as with the rest of the genre it’s too much of the same and not enough truly memorable songs to really stick out.

2 out of 5. Bland rock.

Every songs sounds familiar because they all sound like every other glam metal/hard rock song ever. 3/10

Nah. Two stars ✌

Glam rock ahhh

Rick Rubin can’t save bad lyrics.

My vague recollection (perhaps completely wrong) of this band is that the lead singer was a hunk, and they were known for being a good live act. This is not my jam. Even the Born to Be Wild cover is pretty lame.

The Cult: the kind of band that is well known but I did not listen to. First riff: Allright AC/DC rip off, but the sound is clear, fresh punchy....then Wikipedia...produced by Rick Rubin and mixed by Andy Wallace: Okay ! The legends are in command. One critic said that they did one of the worst born to be wild cover : I can only concur with that. The MV is very spinal tap. In short, it sounds good but it may be these kind of album that came out not at the right time...

Not my cup of tea. Seems dull often. I liked the first track though, reminds me of teh very 80's Billy Idol.

Rather flat rock album. For me every song has almost the same type of vibe. Not that entertaining as I expected.

« Drop peace, baby baby, yeah, Yeah! Baby!!» ! Haaaa!! Born to be wild… No!!! Come on guys…you just lost a point because of that. I don’t know The Cult at all, only by name. Not the only band to have lost its guts in this decades. But this album is less glam rock than expected (which is good), and I kind of like the voice - lyrics are useless though and 70s rock bands influence is too obvious in the music - this is absolutely unoriginal. Nevertheless, after reading about them and listening to this album, I feel kind of motivated to dig in their previous Goth work which is supposed to be more ambitious.

I liked Love Removal Machine and none of it was bad. But this just sounded like generic rock.

One of the public reviews says “If you asked an AI audio model to generate a hard rock album from 1987 this is what it would give you” and I feel like this couldn’t be more true. It sounded like a pretty average hair metal rock album, not bad but not really mind-blowing. I liked love removal machine and I hated their born to be wild cover. Just wasn’t really in the mood to listen to this genre in the morning on the way to work so it gets a 2.5/5

Really mid classic rock IMO, seemed to take elements from a lot of the great rock groups at the time but didn’t do anything spectacular w it. Fav son: Wildflower

Way more boring than I was expecting for a band and album named like that

Not my jam.

Hard Rock de los 80 que, honestamente, mostró sus años casi inmediatamente. "Había que estar ahí" es lo que dirán quienes disfrutan de esta colección de canciones que siguen casi todos los clichés del género y de esa década.

Didn't know cover band music could make this list Best Song: Peace Dog Rating: 4.0/10 2 Stars

This is a pretty weak cult album. They had stronger stuff later, this is ultimately forgettable and not the cult album I would put on this list. Then again, maybe it will turn out to be like other british bands and it will turn out that literally everything they have ever done is on this list. 2/5

Not that I despise The Cult. It's s just, they're so meh. Occasional great songs, relatively bland arrangements, a very one- dimensional singer and dull production make this record a very dubious choice for the list. Intentionally powerful music that misses most of its intention.

I'm not really a fan of this genre - there's only one song of theirs I like and it's not even on the album! It's like this is full of songs that kinda sound like them but never quite get that hook into you. Decidedly average.

Sounds like an Acca Dacca tribute band has to write their own songs. They thought they'd steal a few "Baby"s from Robert Plant and that would be all good. How did this boring shit sell?

Didn’t really know much about this going in. I remembered it’s some classic hard rock band. Indeed that’s what it is. Cool power chord riffs and great heavy metal singing. Overall it’s pretty good but nothing earth shattering. Bad Fun is a cool song. Outlaw has a cool riff. It’s not a bad album but I can’t see how it belongs in this list, so two stars. I have to say I gave a listen to their previous album, Love, and I feel it’s much stronger than this one.

I've never listened to this whole album and yet I feel like I have. Because, if you've heard one or two Cult songs you've pretty much heard them all. I do own their album Love and have listened to it more than a few times. Other than She Sells Sanctuary, I don't think I could name another song on it. After listening to this entire album, except that some of the song names are kind of unique, Aphrodisiac Jacket?, I can't really tell them apart. Honestly, these guys are good in small doses, but they are repetitive, but they are repetitive. One last thing, this album's cover is great for the "Guess the Lead Singer" game. Who could it possibly be?

maybe this is just not the genre im most comfortable interfacing with but besides how fascinating it is to hear that this band was previously making music that sounded nothing like this (and for my lack of enthusiasm, it seems harsh to call this unformed or unconfident), this absolutely refused to take root in my ears for the most part. feels lacking in standout riffs or vocal parts, or really most any distinguishing traits at all...except maybe the lead vocals by ian astbury, a nice combination of gritty and soaring

This album makes me want to smoke dope and grow out my hair, maybe then I’d enjoy it

2.7. I think I prefer gothic rock The Cult over hard rock The Cult.

Fav song: Peace Dogs It's ok. I think the most interesting thing about this album is hearing the late 80's production transitioning into what would be the iconic 90's rock sound. I also like Wild Flower, that one was pretty good!

Ian Astbury sings like he’s yelling for the kids to come to the dinner table. That Born to Be Wild cover….*involuntary shudder* This is a very odd album to be in Rick Rubin’s portfolio. Imagine producing Licensed to Ill and then this. Weird.

I expected this to be earlier than 87, mustve sounded a bit generic even then. Didn't do much for me at all

So generic. Not sure what this is about.

generic hard rock

Less talented and less energetic guns and roses.

A hard rock album that evokes the sounds of the genre throughout multiple decades, from the new wave influences of Billy Idol to the metal-esque sound of AC/DC. We even have an iconic cover (maybe a couple?) of classic rock songs to wrap it all together. However, this love letter to the genre rarely comes off as creative, or even charismatic. Instead, you just get a lot of lesser versions of iconic bands' sounds, and it can be a bore at best. Sure, everything is technically sound, but it isn't important or even that high quality for a genre shift for a band. It really is like if U2 got a heavier sound, but if you don't like U2 or that heavier sound, what are you left with?

it was ok. default rock

It's not shit, but does absolutely nothing for me.

Straight ahead good time rock and roll. Fine, fun even, but unexceptional and I am no more at peace with my eventual demise for having heard it. I was going to give it three stars but I'm lowering that out of respect to Steppenwolf.

It's laughable that an album like this would be on this list because this is the most generic rock I've ever heard. Rick Rubin produced this? I know not all his albums are bangers, but he generally has good taste and what makes an album and sound hit. This is...not bad? Decent guitar playing, vocals aren't my thing but I can tell he's a good singer. They are just creating the equivalent of YouTube copyright free background music in the style of 80s rock.

OK at best.

I listened to this during a very traffic-filled commute home. So this might be quite biased due to the circumstances this was listened to. I was already one foot out on this one and then the "Born To Be Wild" cover came on and I jumped right out completely. Nothing about this resonated with me. It wasn't pop enough to be catchy and it wasn't musically varied enough to keep me interested. This should have been left in the 80s. I won't be listening to this one again.

Most 2/5 ever.

"Wild Flower" is great. The rest is of this sub-meh. The Steppenwolf cover is in the conversation for the GOAT of ill-advised covers.

2 Stars (5/15)

This isn't for me

I wouldn't exactly call this terrible but it certainly isn't good. Not really a sound for my ears. I didn't like it very much but I've encountered far worse. Definitely not an essential listen. I wonder if people who like this type of rock would even consider this an essential album?

The late 80's really sucked. This is better than a lot of the sleazy rock that was going around but it still lacks any merit.

Yeah, it’s fine, but the tunes aren’t nearly good enough for me to turn a blind eye to the fact that, even in 1987, this surely would’ve sounded like a tired rehashing of every classic rock cliche in the book.

Svakalega fínt fyrir það sem það er, en það sem það er er bara alls ekki nógu skemmtilegt. Lögin renna saman í eitt og ekkert virkar catchy. Þetta er þétt og gott sound, en mér finnst þetta frekar boring.

When I saw The Cult on the list, I expected the brooding gothic rock and post-punk flair that made 'She Sells Sanctuary' iconic. Instead, 'Electric' hit me with a barrage of power chords and bluesy riffs. It’s not that the songs are bad—tracks like 'Wild Flower,' 'Lil’ Devil,' and 'Love Removal Machine' are undeniably fun—but this feels like a band abandoning their signature sound for something safer. What makes 'Electric’s' inclusion on this list even more puzzling is that just months later, Guns N' Roses and Aerosmith would unleash 'Appetite for Destruction' and 'Permanent Vacation,' respectively. Even the filler tracks and throwaway moments on those albums outshine the best offerings of 'Electric.' And it’s not just GNR and Aerosmith—the likes of Motörhead, Whitesnake, Kiss, and AC/DC all released albums in the same year that captured this hard rock vibe effortlessly. The Cult's attempt feels forced, like a cat trying to play fetch, awkwardly inserting itself into a game that’s simply not in its nature. Nothing illustrates the album's confused identity more than the regrettable cover of Steppenwolf’s 'Born to Be Wild.' The Cult drains all the energy and danger from the original, leaving a lifeless, by-the-numbers version that feels more like a box-ticking exercise than a tribute. As for Rick Rubin, he’s known for his minimalist production style that allows an artist's raw energy to shine. Around this period, he produced iconic albums like 'Licensed to Ill' by the Beastie Boys (1986) and 'Raising Hell' by Run-D.M.C. (1986), capturing their live essence. His work on 'Reign in Blood' by Slayer (1986), 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (1991), and Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut (1992) showcases his knack for capturing a band's raw energy. However, Rubin’s approach falls flat with' Electric', stripping away the atmospheric elements that defined The Cult’s earlier work. The material may not have been strong enough to begin with, but the result is a hollow sound that lacks the visceral impact of their past. Instead of forging a clear identity, Rubin's production leaves the band sounding disoriented. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? No Would this release make my personal list? No Will I be listening to it again? It’s fun in parts, but there are better albums and more authentic bands from this era.

don’t….. looooove

Not bad, not good, not memorable.

I was hoping to like this album as I like older stuff by The Cult, but this album was kind of a mess. Seemed like they were trying to go all-in on the hard rock sound, but did not pull it off well at all. Peace Dog sounded like they learned to play the same day as the recording, and Born to be Wild was just a trainwreck. Sometimes they got into a decent groove, but it doesn't sound anything like the Cult from previous albums, and it's really not anything I'd want to listen to again.

Super generic rock album, it's hard to believe Rick Rubin was involved with this. It annoyed me how much Ian said "Yeah" throughout this record. I also thought the cover of Born to be Wild was notably worse than the original.

okay sound, pretty samey from that era. Sounded like Billy Idol, but also trying to capture 70's hard rock sound. Probably won't go back. Probably 2.5

Just generic classic rock it seems derivative and like a parody at times. Unfortunately uninteresting

Not a fan. I was like oh this got better and actually it was just the album ended and Spotify was on autoplay. Not offensively bad just not very great either

4/10 - Generic rock album. I thought I would know born to be wild because its the name of a song that I had on this fake guitar that I used to play way to often when i was like 6. But I do not think that its the same song. A bit of a let down.

Just not my cup of tea. The singer fluctuates between out-of-tune screams and what seem to be bad Louis Armstrong impressions. Nothing particularly memorable here, it's pretty cheesy.

Sounds better to me than it did 20 years ago, but doesn’t necessarily sound good.

ikinci sarki basimi agritti agggg album fena deildi ama dunyanin en generic seyi literal

Eh not bad but definitely the type of music my dad would have on his playlists and ask "you ever heard of this band?" Love removal machine Born to be wild (lost points bc its a cover of the original and the original is better, but its still a *good* cover)

Just an 80s hard rock album where all the songs sound so same. Sounds just like it's awful album cover.Boomer rock. No standouts. Tired of listening to all these boomer music.

A bit generic to be fair

Inoffensive and rather boring hard rock. The "Born to Be Wild" cover seemed rather pointless.

Holy generic rock and roll Batman. Listen I won't deny the musicianship. They seem really good at what they do. It's just what they do does not interest me in the slightest. Much of this just sounds like royalty free rock music.

Not very good.

It doesn't even have 'She sells sandwiches' on it. I managed 5 tracks, basic straight ahead rock, nothing to complain about apart from Astubury's nasal vocals. Nothing to be excited about either. 1980s replacement for Bad Company, or The Darkness without the humour, screeching and swearing.

ZZZZZZzzzzzz

Ummm. Part AC/DC part Stones. It's done well but so derivative.

The cover of Born to Be Wild felt like low hanging but unripe fruit - gorge, puke. I think Tom Hibbert, of blessed memory, would have had lots of fun with Rick Rubin. There’s less to him than meets the eye, I sometimes think.

Hard rock bem produzido, mas repetitivo.

Heavily indebted to AC/DC, and with a pointless cover of "Born To Be Wild", this record has delusions of grandeur. All rock. No roll.

Wow, this is super generic hard rock with nearly every hard rock cliche present and accounted for. Love Removal Machine sounds like a ripoff of Start Me Up. And how did they manage to make a boring version of Born to be Wild? A few tracks had moments I liked but then also had moments of pure cheese, so take my "favorite tracks" with a grain of salt. Favorite tracks: Peace Dog, King Contrary Man, Memphis Hip Shake.

queen ripoff, not bad tho

Generic hard rock. the sound of everything that was wrong in the 80S. This album is not for me. Favourite song: Lil devil is ok I suppose. Least favourite: Peace dog, awful rock! Album artwork: Not the kind of cover I like

Generic 2-star rock.

I didn't care for this very much to be honest. Past me by. Poorer version of Born to be Wild, I don't know if this was the original or not.

I guess it was okay but really nothing special, just big rock rock stuff and sounded like loads of other bands but more bland.

The weak spot between "Love" and "Sonic Temple." Rubin dried out their sound to the point of total dehydration. The cover of "Born to Be Wild" is the least inspired and flat-out worst cover of any song by anyone, ever. "Wild Flower" and "Li'l Devil" are bangers.

grating voice

Allie - “Instant one star. This album sux.” I didn’t think it was bad, but overall I would consider it average to below average, which puts it at 2 stars.

Ultimately it’s unremarkable and sounds like most 80s rock. The best song on the album is a cover, and after reviewing 100 albums that’s a pretty strong indicator of a low rating. I wasn’t bored listening to it and I didn’t dislike it, I just probably won’t listen to it again.

In some countries they'd hang you for making that cover of Born to Be Wild

Vapid generic and soulless, like much of its genre from its time

This was the first one where “need to hear before I die” felt like a stretch. It was perfectly fine, but generic. I felt like I’ve heard plenty of other versions of this album in my life that were very similar. All in all good, but not really special

Meh, boring trans am rock. AC/DC like riffs but more boring with a Soundgarden type vocalist. Not a fan at all.

No more merit than being produced by Rick Rubin.

Peace Dog wasn't so peaceful!

This album made me realize how much I don't like hair bands, that being said it wasn't totally unbearable and I think that if I was into this kind of music then it wouldn't have been so bad.

(Sigh) I don't know. It's fine I guess. The fact that "Born to be Wild" is on here tells you all you need to know. I sort of expected The Cult to be more goth but it's ROCK with a capital "R". And also a capital "OCK". "Love Removal Machine" is, according to the Spotify listening figures, the most listened to (and therefore best?) song on here and it sounds EXACTLY like "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones. They sort of remind me of a bad Guns N Roses. The lead singers voice is distinctive, and I sort of appreciate that, but also don't like it? I wonder if the 1001 list is again being a bit obtuse by not picking Sonic Temple. At least I recognise the cover of that one. There can't be TWO The Cult albums on this list, surely? Yeah. Fine. Whatever.

The cult is fun. The cult is hideously derivative. I remember syncing up a cult song and an ac dc song. Same riff. Same key. Same tempo. I’m not sure they belong here, and it’s the she sells sanctuary album if they did. Dimery, do your job.

I wish I could like this, but I really can't stand the guy's voice. Like nails on a chalkboard.

Every song sounds the same: generic. 2 stars instead of 1 because the production is alright and there are a couple decent guitar solos. Otherwise, quite boring stuff that I'd expect to hear at a cheap, sleezy rock bar.

Nada, rollo, lo siento.

Never has a band from Bradford sounded more like they're from California. While it's fun, I'm not sure it has a place on this list.

Nada, rollo, lo siento.

Fine, but voting. Each song sounded almost exactly the same as the last.

Pretty standard rip roaring classic rock. Stones, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Billy Idol, it’s all on there. Nothing there to grab me necessarily. Playlist pick: Memphis Hip Shake

Pretty boring and forgettable, not sure why it’s on the list but one point for technically being music I guess

Idc about this kind of rock music.

the isnt it man. This album was real bad. The only saving grace was the guitar tone during the solos. Can't believe Rick Ruben produced it.

How many English albums are we going to listen to.

Peace Dog has maybe the worst lyrics I’ve ever heard in a rock song. In fact if the singer, who has a great voice, just sang nonsense, the whole album would go up a star. This album is produced better than most modern albums I’ve heard. Everything is clear and the instruments have a very distinct tracking. After reading about it, it’s because Rick Rubin produced it. Remember when Jay-Z said “you crazy for this one Rick!” In 99 Problems? Same guy. He has a very particular skill and he’s probably the best at it. Anyway the songs on here are very much butt rock. The last two tracks are the best of them, in my opinion. It’s 80s hard rock, and it’s great at that but I just can’t take it seriously. I’d have to be on a particular mood to put this on again, and that mood involves shit beer and cigarettes. Honestly I can’t believe these are the same people that wrote “She Sells Sanctuary” which is such a good song.

Fun but silly.

A decent romp through the post-Zeppelin era. The Born to be Wild side step though is almost unforgivable.

Average rock. 2 stars.

Not really my thing. Both too hard and too silly for my tastes.

sucks monkey butt

It's not that it's bad, it's that I just don't care... Not sure why it's on this list.

That brought me back to my youth on Long Island and the great Bar Bands of the Clubs, only those bar bands were much better than these AC/DC wannabes. The low light of these 39 sad minutes is when they slaughter Born to Be Wild with a lifeless rendering of this classic.

Oh boy, another generic white rock band!

Not their best. Not my favorite.

# 204 : Hard Rock, is that what you'd call it? So many other bands did it better. Nothing special here to draw me in. I can listen to it, it's ok, I wouldn't go back to these guys. I liked Electric Ocean the best.

Really confused as to why this made the cut. This sounds like a million other bands.

This isn’t terrible, but sounds very generic. Seems like they tried to become rockers by imitating Van Halen, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, etc. I want to give it a 3 cuz it is a totally ok album, but feel like I should round down given there’s nothing here to really distinguish from other dad rock albums. 2.5/5

This has not aged well. Love Removal Machine still kicks something, but the rest of the album is a wasteland of oversized riffs and ridiculous rock posturing. They would keep all that in the next album and add a chunk of tune. There are some missing links that should stay forever missing and the one between The Doors and Aerosmith is clearly one. Most of its two for LRR. No album with a cover of Born to Be Wild this bad and inessential can get more.

Nothing special

Off all the mediocre rock albums this is the most mediocre of all

Gave me The Darkness vibes. And a little AC/DC perhaps? Not for me though.

Lots of Danzig in there. It's a lot better than most all the 80s hair metal crap, but just meh overall.

Solid rock, but didn’t stand out, not sure why it’s on this list

I know giving this only 2 stars isn't much, but this was surprisingly a little bit more enjoyable that I would have though. I mean the album cover looks terrible and not a big fan of this specific 80's hard rock sound but yeah, not that bad!

Way earlier in this list, I gave Bad Company's "Bad Company" a one-star because I was pretty convinced that it would be my only one-star album through the project. Who could've predicted Lenny Kravitz would be on this list? Anyway. This record reminds me of that in heaps. Same yowl-y vocals, same solid guitar without ever really being groundbreaking... A Danzig song played immediately after this, and I realized *that* was what the vocals sounded like to me. I don't think this is a bad record (and for the record, if I could go back, I'd probably bump that Bad Company record up to a two), it just... doesn't feel essential. It's performed competently (aside from maybe the "Born To Be Wild" cover, and the last song, sheesh) but it's just generic cock rock at it's cockiest. Favorite tracks: "Love Removal Machine"

I was into their previous album, Love, but when this one came out I lost interest. It just seemed so vanilla compared to their earlier stuff. Listening to both albums today, I think even their earlier stuff is kind of vanilla. Plus, I don't care for the lead singer's voice.

Lots of fancy drums and fiddly-faddely guitar. They sound like every heavy rock band I've heard and never cared for. This genre of rock is a complete caricature to me. And what with the album's font selection, animal skin hat, and attempting-to-look-sultry into the camera gazes...they could have been in a band competition with Spinal Tap.

What's nice about this album is that if you miss a song that you like, the next one will be just as good, if not exactly as good. Being that I did not like one song, they were all equally unappealing to me. But equally as good, as I promised.

Hmmm, how have I never heard of this band before? Good, solid rock and roll, slightly unique sounding vocals, a tinge of southern rock elements ... But it's just not quite odd or quirky enough to entice me. I'll give two stars for effort.

This started out ok and I thought I was going to enjoy it but it felt like a very long 38 minutes by the end of it. I like this genre and this era just fine but I don't get why this is here.

# Playlist track - Wild Flower # Notes - Albums starts out OK, but gets worse with each track. - -2 stars for an version of "Born To Be Wild" that is worse than what we usually get in drunken karaoke. - -1 star for the annoying and repetitive screaming.

Alright, what exactly are we doing here? A seemingly-random '80s rock band from - take a guess - the UK, and it's produced by Rick Rubin so maybe that's why it's here. But this reached top 4 in the UK and marked a shift from whatever their style was before to...just mainstream glam rock. It's not fair to call this bad music, it's actually manufactured to be decent. But that's the problem, this is music as a product and not as art. Look at the cover of "Born to Be Wild," who the hell is that even for? The original is better in every way, and the cover doesn't really change anything. It's just a reference point for the old heads that they were presumably courting here. This is lame, doesn't belong on a list like this. Favorite tracks: Wild Flower, Bad Fun. Album art: Kind of cool design-wise, the font is neat, but at the center is just a lame band photo, and look at the bozo with the coonskin cap like he's Davy Crockett. Bugger off. 2.5/5

This is some cock rock. I definitely have to be in a mood for this. File it next to AC/DC for big crunchy open chords and half-yelled vocals. That voice is distincitve and commanding. Born to Be Wild was terrible.

Boring

The Cult shifts away from their gothic debut to selling out as another arena glam metal group derivative of the likes of AC/DC. They're trying to rock hard with loud flashy guitar solos and screaming vocals. They give it there all, especially with incredible guitar riffs and drumming, which I respect. However, the mixing is cluttered, especially compared to clearer glam metal contemporaries. It lacks originality and memorability, with no hits comparable to "She Sells Sanctuary" or "Fire Woman." Songs are repetitive in a desperate attempt to be remembered, but the melody is predictable and feels like it's following the flow of vocals. His vocals are cool but worked better in the gothic themes of Love. Besides my 3 favorites (which are just decent pop songs), I can't find anything to like about any of the deep cuts besides the sick guitar solos, which I wonder was intentional by Rick Rubin to match his work with Slayer. Favorites: Lil Devil, Bad Fun, Love Removal Machine

Sounds like "No, Honey, we have Billy Idol at home" This album is the Billy Idol at home. Also, the album cover looks like a bootleg version. That being said, not bad 80s butt rock, if that's what you're into.

This album needs VU meters. Saying that - The Cult have precisely one song in their repertoire, and it isn't on this album. I actually went to see them live back in about 2010/2011 sort of time - and they were actually appalling. So far up themselves, they thought that it would be a good idea to have looped footage of various Vietnam war atrocities projected onto a screen behind them, as if some wash-up, past-middle-aged rockers from the 1980s had any relevance or influence over the idea war and peace. They reluctantly played their one song (She Sells Sanctuary, obviously) and the crowd showed considerably more appreciation for that than anything else they'd played the whole night. The band glowered angrily at the crowd, clearly upset that they're only known for one thing. Anyway - this album isn't terrible. It's pretty generic VU-meter power rock. Meh.

A band aping AC/DC is always going to be less enjoyable than just listening to AC/DC — critics that make their comparison seemingly fail to recognize the force of nature that is Angus Young. I remember seeing The Cult at a festival show and thinking they were old and out of touch. Let's find out if they sound that way in their heyday. They don't feel particularly tight in the rhythm section — flubbed double-kicks in "Peace Dog" and "Aphrodisiac Jacket" — and the album winds up feeling 'loose' in none of the charming ways Zeppelin ever did. It doesn't come across as comparatively powerful-feeling in terms of the engineering and capture, either — guitars are over-bright, out of tune, and there are numerous drum takes that needed another take, have sloppy edits, or suffer from bad dynamics/compression. Back In Black was the supposed starting place for the guitar sounds of Electric - a comparison of their sonic similarities underscores the guitarists' old adage: "tone is in the fingers," because to my seasoned ears, they don't sound much alike. Listening to the intro of "Aphrodisiac Jacket," Angus and Malcom's guitars are much more mid-forward. Ian Astbury clearly grew up listening to Diamond Dave yowling his way through early Halen records, and this feels dated having been released nearly a decade after 1978's Van Halen I, with nowhere near the caliber of musicianship propelling it, and the comparison doesn't get rosier in either direction, either to Robert Plant's urgent wail on 1973's Zeppelin IV or alongside Guns 'N Roses' razor-sharp hedonism on Appetite For Destruction which also came out in 1987. Despite the above, "Bad Fun" and "Aphodisiac Jacket" have swagger to spare. An album, ONCE AGAIN, that feels selected as "essential" by an Englishman suffering from Nostalgia Fever. Should have stayed goth-rock if you ask me; they were heaps more compelling and forward-looking on 1985's sparkling "She Sells Sanctuary." Really didn't care much for this!

Generic and uninspired.

Asks and answers the question “what if rock was boring?”

Ok, mostly forgettable

it is what it is

today it was not up my allee. maybe another day it would be different

If you asked Chat GPT to write a classic hard rock album, I’m pretty sure this is what it would spit out.

This is some terribly generic hard rock. A few songs ripped, but most just ripped ass.

2 stars

Inoffensive mtv-era 80s hard rock. Reminiscent of AC/DC with a tiny bit of Zepplin. Not particularly bad just a bit soulless. Seems like they were trying to keep up with the “metal mayhem” fad so they shifted their sound.

Meh, I remembered this as being way better than it is. It all sounds the same, but they don’t have the skills to get away with it like say AC-DC. Immediately recognizable, but also kind of tiresome and repetitive. The songs all blend into one karanging power chord with Wolf Child yarling over the top.

This album started off well with “Wild Flower” but it was pretty much downhill from there. You can definitely hear Rick Rubin’s influence (especially considering how much this sounds like his work with Danzig). Overall just kind of boring and not memorable.

Ok album but nothing special

I remember this band from the 80s when they were popular. Listening to this album, I have a similar response now to how I felt then: yes, they are very skilled musicians, but, to me, I'm just not that interested.

Ik sluit me aan bij Sander's commentaar: Met She sells sanctuary was er in ieder geval nog een reden om te blijven luisteren.

Waar is She Sells Sanctuary als je haar nodig hebt.

Just not for me

There’s something likable in the direct line of attack and power of the simple combo structure. “Fire Woman” rocks pure and strong with a compelling hook right out of the gate. But this too quickly gets into repetitive and doofy rock territory. One thinks of a slightly kinder and gentler AC/DC but with lyrics only moderately less sophomoric. No one will go mistaking these lines for the work of Yeats or Dylan. The verging into Thin Lizzy territory (see opening of “Love Removal Machine.”) is no good for anyone and the Steppenwolf cover is ill-advised on several levels, putting a fork into the record as far as one’s interest goes. Recognizing that Monsieur Rubin might call one a pussy for saying so, but Love, is a far better record (and not only because it featured several tunes that made it onto one’s personal late ‘80s mixtapes); it has more range and texture and – crucially – no Steppenwolf covers. In other words, it offers much more by being considerably less Rubin-esque.

Fairly dull, and outdated for its time, hard rock. Every song captures the same vibe. Bad Fun was featured in THPS4, so there's at least a little nostalgia for me there.

A derivative of AC/DC, but with less annoying vocals and slightly smarter lyrics. There were times when I could see this as a natural stepping stone from hard rock/metal to grunge. Very possible that Alice In Chains and Soundgarden borrowed from this sound. The Born To Be Wild cover is bad, but overall this album is pretty decent. If anyone still knew who the Cult was, especially in the US, I could see the relevance of this at sporting events and testosterone fueled evenings.

Never got the fascination for these guys. Maybe it was the overplay of Fire Woman on FM radio. Killed them for me. Singers voice is quite annoying. Reminds me of Morrissey singing rock. Not quite as whiny. Equally annoying. Maybe a 2.5 here

Not my thing at all. I try to reserve 1 star for stuff I truly hate. This one comes pretty close.

Heavy metal. It's ok.

Might have given there stars but "Born to be wild" annoys me soooo much. Boomer music.

I could handle these guys a little bit more than the other heavy bands in the day. They had a good song, Sanctuary. Too bad it's not on this album.

Kid: “Mom, mom, can we get the new AC/DC album please?!" Mom: "We have AC/DC at home honey." AC/DC at home... This was pretty much disposable from start to finish. Completely derivative of any and every mainstream rock band of the 70s with a glossy hair metal production sound. Your dad probably loves it.

The Cult sold their gothic rock sanctuary for THIS?!

standard classic rock album

Soft rock bollocks

Not sure what to make of this. It kinda feels like an AI generated Queen tribute band.

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard this band every weekend at The Deer Park Tavern in Delaware. 2/5

Not for me

A poor man's Deep Purple really. I feel I outgrew this stuff by the time I hit 20; so it's not for me but I can understand why they'd be pretty good for heavy rock fans. Nothing against it, just not my taste.

This album felt like a rip off of AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. I get that in an age where hair metal rules supreme, that straight hard rock was against the grain, but this album added absolutely nothing new to the conversation.

First impression, this band seems like it's trying too hard. I am particularly annoyed by the "yow!" and "yay-ah!" sounds the lead singer likes to do, they sound phony the way he does them. Also the showy testosterone induced guitar solos, combined with the whole vibe of the album cover just support my feeling about it. There a fun-ness about this album that's appealing, but mostly it's just rubbing me the wrong way - too many rock n roll tropes.

If I wanted to listen to AC/DC, or some shit like that, I would, not this desperate reinvention.

It sure is a band.

Legal porém não muito

I recognize The Cult. It’s okay but no need to listen again.

How the fuck did this all-songs-sound-EXACTLY-the-same album make it onto the 1001 list? No way is this an essential listen. This band has one decent song, She Sells Sanctuary, and it's not even on this album. Fail, list makers.

Too many oh yeahs became an oh no

Not their best. Try Ceremony or Sonic Temple

This album has one good song (Love Removal Machine), a bunch of okay ones, and a truly terrible version of "Born To Be Wild." Skip this one and go for "Love" - The album that was released a year or two before this one.

Generic rock, there's no way this is in the top 1000 albums ever 2/5

Fine, but still just as dull and macho as it was when it never interested me the first time around

Seems like very standard ‘87 cock-rock to me. I assumed The Cult were more interesting than this?

Enjoyed while driving. Really classic sounding hard rock to me. Nothing ended up getting saved though. 2.7

Apparently the engineers on this record sought to precisely replicate the guitar sounds from Back in Black, the drum sound from Highway to Hell and the voice sound from Led Zeppelin. To be fair, they nailed it and created a big slab of easy access classic rock. However, the songs are fine, but nothing more and the cover of Born To Be Wild is spectacularly horrendous. I saw The Cult at Reading 2001. I don't remember much about it, but I do hope I've not subconsciously plagiarised Aphrodisiac Jacket for the next Bumblecheek album. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Love Removal Machine Date listened: 31/08/23

Some songs are fun, but most are too slow to be good to rock out to, and that's really the only thing they have to offer.

Super bland and one-dimensional. I did not like it. I recognized one slightly catchy song, "born to be wild"... But I've honestly always hated the sound of that song.

The singer does a halfway decent Jim Morrison impression. Otherwise nothing very interesting or impressive about this. Simplistic guitar riffs, basic rock rhythms, insipid lyrics. Meh. 2 stars.

Great sound and enjoy the single but over a whole album it gets a little one paced and samey.

Not as good as anything by Dead Aggressive Wank. Especially Bloodfart.

I just don't get it. Like, whatever it is that I'm supposed to hear in this album that makes it significant, I just don't hear it. Also, their cover of Born to Be Wild is just the normal song, but not as good. 2/5

The dial did not move much on this. I did not recognize and of the songs and I have no desire to revisit. It was only about 40 minutes which was a plus. I will round down.

This was some weak stuff. Pale imitations of other artists.

Look man I fuckin love The Cult. They understood the assignment of "rock & roll" at a time when a lot of groups didn't. I'd be all about Sonic Temple being among the 1001, maybe even Love if I'm uncreative that day. But Electric? Cmon, this is just AC/DC for Bowie fans. The Cult at their least creative, least diverse. It's certainly not BAD music to have a bar fight to, but it just doesn't belong in this project.

Enjoyable, but it felt like a purposeful ripoff of so many things.

Innocuous enough but decidedly a 2. Just kinda like human wallpaper.

Ok, a little to hard rock for me.

So I felt like I've heard Born to be Wild in rock'n'roll racing, googled it, and it turns out not only all those bands sound the same, but they also literally play the same songs

Boring, standard 80s glam rock, nothing stands out to me

Some parts are kinda catchy, but this album is repetitive and kinda blockheaded. Less revolutionary and more retro for 1987, this felt like it came out earlier than it did. BT - Peace Dog - Aphrodisiac Jacket

I don't really need more of this kind of hard rock. Shouldn't it have been a bit dated already when it was released? Some allright riffs, but every song sounds like I have heard another band done better, and I'm not only talking about Born to be Wild.

Y'a pire mais on se fait chier

court😃 mais chiant🫤

Rick Rubin took every trope from early/mid 80s rock and metal and crammed it into one album. I felt like I was listening to a parody album the whole time.

- I can very easily make the argument that, at 661 albums into this project, this album takes the championship belt for worst album on the list, knocking off both the Killers "Hot Fuss" and Linkin Parks "Hybrid Theory" effortlessly. It's not that the record is cheese personified or that it is a collection of rock cliches. There are plenty of releases that are both of these things but they are still enjoyable. No, this record is hot fuckin' garbage. I kept waiting for the track that would help me understand why it was released .... all the way to the end and it never came. The writing is terrible, the vocals are boringly terrible along with the production. The only element close to redeeming is the guitar and I'm really reaching for anything here ..... In the end, that fails as well because it's just one boring rock guitar cliche after another that never goes anywhere. On top of all of that, they manage to completely fuck up a cover of "Born To Be Wild" by just being crappy and not wild at all. It's so bad it's offensive. I'm concerned about what I would have to listen to that would knock this release off the top of this garbage heap ...... 1 because I can't give a zero. -

Listening to Electric by The Cult was a chore. I’ve never been a fan of The Cult, and this album did absolutely nothing to change my mind. From the opening moments of “Wild Flower,” it felt like I was listening to an AC/DC knockoff, and that comparison followed the album all the way to the end. The riffs are familiar, the lyrics are packed with rock-and-roll clichés, and very little here feels original or inspired. The frustrating part is that the album sounds great. Rick Rubin’s production is clean, powerful, and professional. The drums hit hard, the bass sounds fantastic, and Ian Astbury delivers some strong vocal performances. Unfortunately, all that production quality is spent polishing songs that I found generic, lazy, and completely forgettable. Tracks like “Lil Devil,” “Electric Ocean,” “King Contrary Man,” and “Outlaw” all blur together into one long parade of borrowed riffs and tired hard-rock tropes. “Aphrodisiac Jacket” briefly caught my attention because it sounds more like late-‘70s Zeppelin than AC/DC, but that’s hardly a glowing compliment when my standards for the album were already scraping the floor. “Love Removal Machine” was the one song I recognized from years of rock radio, and while it’s probably the most unique track here, that’s a very low bar. Even then, it didn’t do much for me. The absolute low point is “Born to Be Wild.” It’s one of the worst covers I’ve heard in a long time. Somehow The Cult managed to take a song built on energy, attitude, and fun and turn it into something lifeless and unpleasant. It sounds like a bad bar band trying to imitate a classic after one too many drinks. By the time “Memphis Hip Shake” arrived, I was completely checked out and just waiting for the album to end. That’s really my lasting impression of Electric: boredom. I can understand why some people love this kind of hard rock, but for me there’s nothing here that isn’t done better by AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, or countless other bands. This album isn’t just not for me—it actively reminds me why I’ve never cared for this style of music in the first place. A forgettable, derivative record that offers nothing I want to come back to. 1.8/10

Was expecting some proper goth rock or post-punk, but this turned out to just be the most generic, bland and lazy hard rock imaginable. Having a dirty, actual rock’n’roll-like production might’ve done a lot, now it just sounds far too sterile for the kind of music it tries to be. I was going to give this two stars at first but frankly, listening to it pissed me off so much that in the end I decided to drop it down to one.

It's like everything bad about classic rock all rolled into one place with no redeeming qualities.

No clue why this album is on the list when plenty of other UK and US-worthy hard rock albums were snubbed. Their previous album, Love, would have been at least a decent addition to the Gothic rock sub-genre on the list. Not amazing, but filled with British enough charm and nicely put side by side with bands like the Cure. This is as if they watched This Is Spinal Tap and decided to emulate the band, not realizing that it was a joke. Rubin's production, while solid as usual, sucks out all of the reverb (like what he did with Slayer) and WORSENS the band sound, making them as memorable as every cock-rock band you've ever heard. It makes them seem less threatening, precisely the effect that made Slayer more so. That cover of Born to Be Wild is one of the worst I've ever heard, too. Nothing but clichés and throwaway riffs here. Must be trolling from the part of music critics that added this, as many albums on the list appear to be. Just awful. See: Jet's second album 20 something years later for lessons not learned.

It’s like they’re trying to be motley cruë, not interesting to me

I was actually quite interested to listen to this, as I always liked She Sells Sanctuary. Sadly, this album is nothing like this - it's the most generic 80s hard rock crap I've listened to in a while. Why does this need to be in the book, when we have plenty of AC/DC, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, etc?

What is that version of Born to Be Wild about? Not for me but of the Rock albums so far this isn’t the worst.

I’ve heard this before and I used to own this on tape. It’s been a very long time since I heard this and I’m surprised to see it here because i don’t remember it being very remarkable. Listening to it again, I remembered it correctly this is just generic cock rock with some hair metal twinge to it, and it’s not the least bit innovative. I might appreciate it if they brought something new to the table but it’s just uninteresting rehashed preening.

not for me……. this sucked

The cult were a second rate goth band who suddenly turned into a third rate pub rock band. One of the worst singers ever.

A nota na realidade é pelo album ser extremamente comum. Se eu tropeço numa árvore aqui em Bairro de Fátima cai umas 5 bandas que fazem o mesmo rock. Não entendi o pq estar nessa lista

Not for me.

Standard colour by Numbers hard rock. Always Imagined the CULT would be more interesting

Not my thing

Incredibly boring hair metal

I don´t know what this album is on this list for. not good at all.

Did nothing for me

This is such generic, radio friendly rock.

The Cult always had 2 strikes against them for me: I loathed everything about hard rock and their name was before The Cure in the CD bins, further obstructing me from seeing if Entreat or some other rarity was at that particular store. Despite having some guitar effects/aesthetic overlap with bands I liked - The Cure, U2, INXS, Ocean Blue - they just always scanned as yet another hard rock band. And folks, that’s still what they are. Just the most blatant AC/DC rip-off act ever, it’s embarrassing!

As Trouser Press apparently said, "cornball retro-moronic". If they were teenagers playing this stuff at my local pub, I'd say "okay they can play ... but why are they choosing to play this rubbish? and could the singer not find a better role model?" Will I ever choose to play this album for myself? No, never again. 1/10

This is a pretty derivative and cliched album of lightweight heavy rock (if that's not a contradiction!). To my ears there are no standout tracks (except maybe the Steppenwolf cover - and that's only OK).

One of the most boring by the numbers sub-ac/dc level hard rock albums imaginable. Bunch of British guys saw Bad Company and thought what if do that, but really take the edge off. No swag. Tedious riffs. Dull sounding. Not even any flashy wanky guitar. The musical equivalent of the bamboo they put in sausages to make them coagulate.

theyre all the same, boring

I'm not big into 80s cock rock. There's not a whole lot for me here. It's kind of rock made by boys for boys and sometimes that can be appealing to an individual woman, but I'm generally not that woman. It sounds like David Lee Roth Van Halen, probably bc that was commercially successful. I don't like it though.

Holy mother of dad rock, they really pulled out every cliche in the book for this one. This just feels like a full 40 minutes of "oooo baby yeah baby yeah ooooo yeah baby baby ooo yeah baby" all while the most uninteresting guitar riff you've ever heard plays again for the 100th time. How this was ever popular I'll never understand, and the fact that it's still getting attention 40 years later is proof that people only like certain music because they associate it with their youth. But trying to look at this as objectively as possible, it's a complete pile of shit.

1/5 Hard rock genérico da década de 80 produzido por Rick Rubin. O fato de ser um álbum do The Cult torna tudo pior.

The worst yet! Absolutely did not need to listen to this album before I die.

No. This is like if you told Cory Feldman to start a GOOD band, and they are still not good (my opinion). It’s as metal as Ghost. To put it simply as quoted by one of my favorite holiday movies: “Buzz, yer girlfriend…WOOF!”

Not for me

Rubin: Watch, imma impugn their masculinity till they turn into a fourth derivative hair metal outfit

This album cover art is repelling. Mostly your average hard rock sound nothing special. The cover of Born to be Wild is terrible. Which was foreshadowed by the terrible album cover. This lost it 1 star.

I will never be able to hear “Born to be Wild” again without thinking of this album, and not in a good way.

I assumed I wasn't going to have fun with this album because it would be all gothy as that's how I think of The Cult, and traditionally, I have not enjoyed goth. Well, it turns out I didn't have fun with this album because it was uninspired classic rock. Mostly, even if I don't enjoy an album, I understand why it ended up on this list. Not this time. Mind you, I wasn't hating it, just not seeing the point of it, so in my self imposed marking system that should mean it gets a 2. However the Born To Be Wild cover was so indescribably horrific it's getting: 1/5

thank god they brought in Rick Rubin, or else they never would have been able to land on their true sound: hard rock that sounds like it should be in a royalty free music library

Schlimm.

If AI was given the prompt to make an 80s hair metal album this is it... Lacks any kind of creativity or differentiation. How can you sound vanilla being hard rock???

Nah, not for me

Not my cup of tea

This was shit. I could hear better music if I went to my local on a Thursday night

The inclusion of this record on this list is an abomination. I mean, 1-star for the crisp sound, but it's sterile butt-rock that AC/DC did 100x better a decade earlier.

Back in 2019, I attended a metal/metal adjacent music festival, and one of the bigger ticket acts was set to be electronic and big beat group The Prodigy. However, The Prodigy's vocalist, Keith flint tragically died a couple of months prior, so the band understandably called out. Who did the promoters and organizers settle on to replace this punky, hard-edged electronic act in the middle of a metal skewed festival? None other than The Cult. While The Cult is, in fact a hard rock, or even heavy metal band, the vibe of the festival skewed a little more modern and a little heavier. Basically, The Cult's vibe was way off. And, long story short, they played a perfectly decent ~50 minute set to a crowd that was just not into it. And ever since watching them fight for their lives up there, I've kind of rooted for The Cult as underdogs, even if I don't really listen to them much at all. But, even with my predisposition of sympathy towards The Cult, this album just doesn't do it. And it hurts even more because The Cult were actually kind of interesting before this. Their first couple albums were still, I'd say, around the hard rock pocket, but with a distinct goth rock slant that resulted in some pretty cool music. This style got them some mainstream success on Love in 1985, and it's been a while since I've checked that album out, but just after a quick refresher, it's pretty good stuff. Unfortunately, after this, The Cult pretty much threw everything unique about their sound out the window, and gave the world Electric. Which is about as boilerplate a hard rock album as I can imagine. I honestly expected to like this a little more than I did, but I just wasn't feeling it at all. I get the sense that a lot of these songs would be fine on their own, even if I'm still not convinced that they'd be great. But sequenced together, they just run into each other and create homogeneous hard rock mash. Even Love Removal Machine, a song I remember liking, was not really that exciting or interesting to me in the contest of the album, even if it *is* pretty catchy. And the Born To Be Wild cover just didn't need to happen at all. I will say, the one song I did actually like was Memphis Hip Shake, which has a really interesting, snaky, start-stop riff, punctuated by a great drum stomp. It's some great, groovy hard rock. But as the last song here, it's also too little, too late. And it can't save this album. I almost feel bad for this, but I really felt like I was waiting most of this album out, and that's never a good sign.

By their third album, The Cult had become a caricature of themselves. This is tired, generic rock. Their second album, Love ,would have been a better inclusion if only for She Sells Sanctuary.

No me ha gustado no me gusta este genero en los 80.

Boring, I was bored.

Not sure why this album was on this list. It was meh, and I had to downgrade it by a star due to the band's rendition of Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf and thousands of cover bands did it better!

Can't get any more white bread rock than this album. This is god-awful.

Snoozefest

Great to fall asleep to.

Why is this on here? What a stupid waste of time

The first album on this list to actually make me angry I had to listen to it. Absolute dreck

It bamboozles me that someone was thinking of a list of 1001 MUST LISTEN albums and this was what came to mind. It truly sounds like an AI genererated 80s rock album. Wall to wall paint by the numbers rock. Nothing unique, nothing special, no distinct personality, weak instrumentals, and an opening and closing track that are utterly unremarkable. Honestly the 38 mins felt much much longer. Love Removal Machine is not enough to salvage this generic nothing of an album. 1/5

c'est vraiment pas exceptionnel 2/10

Pure Butt Rock. If this album was a person, it would try to spike your drink while you are in the bathroom.

Completely generic Hard Rock

Great album, but total sellout. The Cult plays AC/DC.

I had no idea there was just so much boring rock in the 80s. Justifiably forgotten.

this really didn’t do it for me

It's just not for me. I am not The Cult's target demographic. Album cover is wicked, songs on the album are not. Generic hard rock, wailing guitar, kind-of-bad vocals, especially on the cover of "Born To Be Wild." I was surprised to see Rick Rubin produced this, but that's probably why someone felt like it was worthy of being on this list.

Another unfinished album. Sorry this stuff just isn't what I am into at all.

Oh my this was excruciating. Any subtlety was lost on me.

Like AC/DC but more boring. Originally a goth rock band, the Cult hired Rick Rubin specifically to sell out by sounding more like the popular glam metal and hard rock bands of the '80s. The end product sucks. This includes a slowed-down cover of Born to be Wild which puts me to sleep. Bad, in a word.

Should have judged by the cover and avoided altogether

1 uuild - 1.5 2. peace - 1 3. devil - 1 4. jacket - 1 5. ocean - 1 6. fun - 1.5 7. king - 1.5 8. machine - 1.5 9. uuild - 0 10. outlauu - 1 11. memphiz - 1.5

Wikipedia mentions a review calling this the “worst version of born to be wild.” I think, well, I have to listen to that right now. I made it 35 seconds. It was indeed terrible. Now I have to listen to this whole album with that first impression. Earlier in this project I wrote that I was giving an album 1 star because it was in the bottom 20% of albums in this project. I feel some embarrassment over that comment because a standard bell curve wouldn’t produce an even 20% in each ratting 1-5. (The album did suck and I stand by my 1.) I just noticed yesterday that I’m awarding 5s at a rate of about 1/10. Analogizing from that, I should be awarding 1s at approximately the same pace and I’m not. This was a borderline 1/2 for me, but armed with this new confidence to award more 1s, I’m giving it a 1. Also, “love removal machine” sent me scurrying to my guitar tabs app to see how close that riff was to “start me up.” Pretty close! Different enough for copyright purposes, I’d say, to be fair. And then the singer’s way he sings “baby baby baby baby” in that song is awfully similar to Robert Plant in “babe I’m gonna leave you.” So that song, at least, reminded me of two much better songs, which was pleasant. Getting to “born to be wild” this second time is so strange. I swear he’s singing worse (on purpose?) on this song than on the other songs. If I could confidently say this was a parody, I might like it more. But I don’t think it is. “Outlaw” was perhaps the worst song on the album, and I gave up on it. And I was offended that they called a song “Memphis hip shake,” which implies fun, musicality, and coolness, all of which this album lacks.

Although I like this type of rock from time to time, there were no particular songs that stood out to me. Everything had the same energy. It felt like one long song. At this point, just write one particularily good song, instead of a whole album of mid songs. Could not get through the album.

Type of music dudes on motorcycles blast for everyone to hear Will I listen to again: 0%

I hadn't heard this particular record before. What the fuck happened to this band? The answer is Rick Ruben clearly. They had this cool hip goth thing going and this is just jock bro bullshit. Fuck this album. It would have been like a 2 or 3 on it's own merits. But knowing what they did before compared to this... yeesh.

Born to be boring and derivative.

so forgettable and that’s not what a good rock album should be… and that born to be wild cover honestly sucked 2.5/10

There is zero reason for this to be on this list and for me to have heard it before I died. I am giving this a 1 star in hopes whoever is responsible for this list will reconsider this very basic, middle-of-the-road rock album which does nothing new or revolutionary for even the time it came out.

Not worth spending time with.

Generic

Didn’t love it

Absolutely soulless.

so, a bad ac/dc rip off done by brits? thats… ummmm… silly. ac/dc isnt good enough to even be a band to emulate. i dont think this belongs anywhere but a garbage can.

Honestly really didn't like this. It felt so try-hard, and rip-off and unauthentic. I was surprised because I remembered liking The Cult alright. I went back to their previous album and it was immediately better. I think Rick Rubin fucked these guys up. 1.49/5

Cartoonish rock posturing. Bring back Southern Death Cult.
