Reviews (page 2 of 7)
Never heard of this band and you would have to work hard in convincing me that isn't Joe Elliott on the cover. After sifting through records I don't enjoy, records I think are fine but should not be in here and all of the British bands that merit inclusion because they are British bands that merit inclusion...it's nice to have a new band that I really like. I had no idea what to expect prior to listening but the horns and sound of Know Your Product put me right in the headspace to enjoy this album. Supposedly, the band doesn't love this album so I may have to check out more of their back catalog. I know "Just Like Fire Would" because Bruce Springsteen has covered the song, but I have never gotten a punk feeling from the song. Perhaps it is just how Springsteen sang the song. I have found through this project that I enjoy mid-to-late 70's punk rock. Highly recommend this one for anyone who enjoyed The Clash, Sex Pistols or The Only Ones.
a MONSTER record, glorious, joyous and still fresh
I like the cleaver use of track titles "Know Your Product" and "No, Your Product". It's a funny joke within the album. Overall this is very much the kind of rock music I listen to on the radio. The driving, heavy guitar and drums feels like a precursor to the Seattle sound of the 90's. The horns are only in a few songs but they do add a fun new element you don't normally hear in rock music. A really fun album. Favorite song: "A Minor Aversion" Best representation of the album: "Orstralia"
Hell yeah, this album rules! I've never heard it before, but the onslaught of guitars, horns and organ was a hell of a way to start my day today. 4.5/5
Classic Australian punk that should be better known. If the “I’m Stranded” single was on here then it would be talked about in the same discussions as the Clash and the Damned.
This album kicks so much ass, man. The talent in punk bands never ceases to amaze me. Favorite track: No, Your Product
ROCK 'N FUCKING ROLL! Move over Strokes, Libertines et all, it was already here in 1978. I'm thoroughly enjoying this, also the more raw International Robot Sessions before they started playing with horn sections. 4,5*
Where the FUCK has this album been my entire life?! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Horns! This is much better and cleaner than I was expecting and I am into it!
Did not know what I was expecting when I started this album, but that second track just fucking blew me away. These Australians can make some banger punk tunes.
the best!
This album has non stop energy from start to finish
After seeing the year this came out, I was shocked at what was coming through my headphones. I think this music was a little ahead of its time. I don't think of this type of garage-y punk rock gaining traction until the 1990s/2000s, but I thoroughly dug it. I found myself headbanging along to most of the songs. Makes me want to thrash about in a pit at a concert. I enjoyed this album a lot.
Great to see an Aussie band on the list. The Saints are a solid hard rocking punk band with their own sound and a bit more depth to their music than the average punk band
This rules why the hell didn't I know about it before?
New to me. Loved it. Was a great album.
Holy shit! These Aussie punks are obviously something Rancid and Tim Armstrong have heard before. High energy and mixing punk with 70s rock. The exact type of album that’d have me pogo dancing in downtown Melbourne!
Completely new to me. Never even heard of these fellas. Infectious beats. Punk and rock vibes with extra treats such as the occasional horn and harmonica. Great album overall. Added "This Perfect Day", "Lost and Found", and "Run Down" to my current playlist.
Som tri, punkzao clássico
An Australian rock and roll album with loose punk ties and rowdy production. Love the horns.
Terrific album by this underrated punk band from Brisbane Australia. No filler on this one. The horns are a nice touch without being overbearing. This should have been much bigger than it was. Still it was influential and I'm glad it's in the book.
Album number 417 is the 2nd Australian disc I've been given. First was The Avalanches, a truly, stunningly boring piece of repetitive twaddle. But this is the business! Bailey's nasal snarl over Kuepper's buzzsaw wall of sound is head-bangingly perfect. Know Your Product joins I'm Stranded in the pantheon of Oz Rock. They should headline the opening ceremony at the 2032 Olympics.
This was quality! Never heard of them before but it was great. I wouldn't have guessed it was from the 70s. Lots of energy, good use of brass (take note Suggs), good voice for punk. I knew from the first couple of seconds of the opening track I was going to like it. Reminded me of Iggy and the Stooges in parts, but he also sounds a bit like Tim Armstrong.... Highlights were: Know your product, List and found This perfect day The ballad Private affair I'll be back!
Pretty strong start and I enjoyed all of the riffs. Everything is pretty catchy too. I had never heard of them but their name is cool. I don't know what it is about this album, but I loved almost everything. Fave track(s): Memories Are Made of This, Private Affair, No, Your Product, Orstralia
"Memories Are Made of This" and "Orstralia" were the two that really stood out to me. This whole album was great. The songs didn't drag on forever, the singer actually sang, and it wasn't the same chord over and over throughout all of the songs.
One of the only albums better than this is the Saints debut. Raw, primal stuff with added soul
Holy moly How have I never heard of these guys before A fantastic album from start to finish with a brilliant horn section as well Kind of sounds like what a punk album by the Rolling Stones might sound like
Yeah yeah yeah, the true spirit of Punkrock! Raw, unpleasant and honest to the bone! Lots of fun to meet The Saints here.
Australia ska punk, sign me up
Another punk masterpiece. This one is hailing from Australia. The lyrics are good, too. And if the music's not exactly up to the level of The Clash and The Damned, it's still far better than the tracks usually played by punk bands such as The Undertones or The Jam. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 800, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
My expectations were low, but this album is stunning. Sounds as if it could have been recorded in 2001, alongside The Strokes et al.
jäkla gött album alltså. "No, your product" är ett asnajs spår. rocknroll så det står härliga till
Excellent punk album, with a little bit of a jazzy feel on a couple of songs. A lot of fun
Loved this record! It's an energetic time travel to the late 70’s. Some of these song made my playlists
Descubrimiento.
Who have i never heard these before. Proper punk! Would love to see them live . Bit of a Jam vide in there as well.
Okay, this was nice. I'm always down for some good punk rock, but I also get a little worried whenever I get a punk album for this project, especially when I've never heard of the band before and the album was released prior to... like, 1982 or so. I wasn't entirely sure if I would enjoy Eternally Yours, but I'm happy to say that I did enjoy it. This album really doesn't do anything particularly wrong. The energy is great. I think the occasional horn usage makes the album feel special compared to many of its contemporaries. The writing is filled with social and political commentary for much of the album, which is something that I almost always appreciate. Chris Bailey's vocals aren't my favorite, but they're not bad at all. "Know Your Product" is a really good opener. This album is pretty tight and there really isn't any filler on here. I like Eternally Yours. It's not the best punk album I've heard, but it's got everything that a punk album needs to be worth listening to. Good stuff. Low 4/5.
Killer album with only a handful of missteps
Förvånansvärt stark punk!
🌊
Damn. This sounds way ahead of where we were in 1978. I guess the Australians understood the direction of punk Americans did? Vocally, its kind of an iggy pop rip at times, but the tunes sound very late 90s/2000s. The horns in Know Your Product were such a familiar 00s sound (maybe Smashmouth or Mighty Might BossTones) and the harmonica in Run Down was just weird enough to work
Some pretty fun stuff in here especially the early tracks. Bit of Geese sound again here eh?
Nice little punk album with some nice twists and turns
I had never heard of this band before but really enjoyed both the music and their story. Glad this is on the list.
I like this a lot. I didn’t really think of Australia having punk music apart from the recent lot like The Chats or Amyl And The Sniffers but that just shows my ignorance of Australian music, I guess. I like the combination of punk band and horns - something I’ve only heard before on a Dead Kennedys track. I don’t think these lot are as good as them, and I didn’t really pay attention to the lyrics so I don’t know they’re politics or whatever, but the tunes were good. And it seemed very well produced for a 70s punk record. Cool!
The cure???
Day899 - not dirty like the germs or circle jerks but still punk
Excellent album, need to listen to other Saints stuff as well!
now this is some nice POUNK!!!!
Now THIS is punk. It might take you by surprise hearing the horn section kick in, but they add to the accelerated guitars and drums. Lyrics about consumerism, fighting against the system, and materialism, those are staples to the punk canon. Very fun record.
Awesome I really loved it. Fun listen.
4 would listen again
Surprisingly well recorded punk. Quality album.
Kult.
the british reject island jerking will commence shortly. some good ol' fashion capital P punk. unfortunately by this point generation x were doing cooler things. if you're getting out creatived by billy idol there's something to be done. ed manages to do some things 🌞. (at least) a-tier lyricist by punk standards. crazy chorus on "memories are made of these". mad decent though. goes on a run from "private affair" to "no, your product" (re "i wanna crash out"; you and me both dude). goes on Another run from "run down" to "untitled" (re "orstralia": ring the Based alarm. the horns really work on this one). last two tracks are a bit shits and giggs. i can't hate that. i'm lying. but i make exceptions 👾. 3.4-4.5. can't wait to win a niche off against some adjunct professor.
Solid album. Not something I’m used to listening to much when it comes to genres but some of the songs were undeniably great! I’m glad I got to listen to this. I would’ve never known of it before.
Really reminds me of the Dead Boys.
better than I expected
Nice! Didn't know these guys. Pretty fun record!
Enjoyed this more than I expected for a punk album! Lots of interesting stuff going on here. 7/10 Quite Likeable
New band for me. I really liked this. Excellent musicianship.
Australian punk, who knew
(5/7) kind of fun. I liked the instrumentation, especially on "Know Your Product"
Know Your Product was a killer opener...but then where did the horns go? The rest of it was more middle of the pack late 70s punk. Enjoyed it more on the 2nd listen...middle of the pack was harsh. Good stuff.
17/05/2026 For a band I have never heard of and a genre that is saturated... I bobbed along to this. Spotify listeners: 115.8k
Huge stooges influence and I like that. The production on this is incredible for a 70s punk album.
Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Tolle Scheibe!
Favorite track(s): Know Your Product, Lost and Found, No, Your Product, Orstralia
Never heard of them, but you can hear the punk sneer. It sounds pretty good! The horn section initially struck me, because you don't hear that in punk of this vintage often, of course a decade later that would change with Ska\Punk and similar efforts. I keep hearing things that wouldn't become popular until much later, indicating they are either influential or way ahead of their time. A really good listen, only one clanker.
Maybe not the most memorable punk album, but it is very fun and energetic, with some nice touches of creativity, something I really appreciate right now. As any other punk project, this is packed with frenetic rhythms, powerful riff guitars, social criticism and vocals that feel more spoken than actual singing. However, this is not just pure punk with only the mentioned elements. It also has a great touch of melody and can be quite catchy sometimes. They also incorporate additional instruments like what seems to be a saxophone in "Know Your Product", a keyboard in "No, Your Product" or an harmonica in "Run Down". Besides, there are a couple of songs that are more "Art Punk" than actual punk, having a softer and poppy approach instead of an energetic one. These songs would be "Memories Are Made of This" and "A Minor Aversion". Overall, a great and very fun experience.
Fun rock, reminded me of the White Stripes
Really great punk album
Solid punk album. Definitely flagged for future repeat listens.
1001 did it again, priming me to not want to listen to an album because it's a seemingly British dad rock band from the 70s. But after Memories Are Made of This, I realized I was really enjoying the album. After the second listen, I was flirting with a 5. I'll stay even-keeled and throw a 4
Makes you wonder how 80% 2000s indie acts got away with their pale pastiches
This is the kind of album I am here for. An artist I have not heard of before and the project turns out to be really solid. While this may be kind of no frills punk, and other than a few questionable lyrics, it is a solid listen front to back. Albums like this make me wish we had less representation from the big artists we all know and more like this.
Really good old school alt/punk album! Never heard of them but they were really good !
Tästä tuli vahvat 80-luvun Hanoi Rocks-vibat. Ihan hyvää rokkia, soittoa ja ok biisejä. Tykkäsin, kun totuin laulajan soundiin ja ulosantiin.
Excellent punk album, but with some more interesting twists.
Maybe it's the accents, but this really did something for me. Teenage wannabe-punk me was happy to discover this today. 3.5
Pretty good early punk
Really nice PUNK ROCK before the ramones ? Sounds like them but predates them ?
This is good fun and the beat is infectious. I slightly prefer the group’s first album. I added “International Robots” to my Generator playlist. 3.5/5
What is it about 70s punk that once seemed so aggressive and subversive but now it practically sounds sunny and poppy?
Really good punk album, comes thick and fast and ends up for a good listen. No, Your Product was my fav song and first listen of the album. (I'm) Misunderstood and Memories Are Made Of This were my other highlights
8/10 Highlights: Know Your Product Private Affair No, Your Product
Crikey I loved this. Raucous and fast. I’m coming back to this!
I liked it—kind of like melodic Ramones. Though I don’t really know much about punk.
Starts off with songs that I was really surprised came from 1978, but kinda settled into a more recognizable sound afterwards. Honestly some really cool music and definitely punk music that I enjoy a lot.
Alright. Finally one of these punk/post punk bands that’s not just a noisy mess. I dug it, particularly the tracks with horns. 4.5⭐️
Excellent new-to-me discovery. Another band I’d never have found without the book/project. Enjoyable listen.
I liked this!
Great energy
Loved it
Good
had never even heard of the saints until now, wow i've been missing something great. loved this
Classic punk sound. I liked it enough
Wasn't boring and was pretty energetic. Exactly a punk sound like a punk album should sound? Guess it's neither here or there with my stars, but I'll give it extra because it wasn't boring me.
Ok
yeah, up my alley
Different, innovative. Enjoyed this.
WHY ARE WE GOING SO FUCKING FAST???
Early punk scene is cool but not really for me, mostly.
Fav- lost and found 3/5
TRN VX Pro+.
Pleasant surprise! I have not listened to this band before but will be returning to re-listen to this album in the future.
Another band I'm not familiar with. This one's got a classic punk sound that I can get along with. I'm not sure I'd say it's a must-hear, but it's definitely worth a listen or three. And it's certainly got me wanting to hear more by The Saints. I'm going to give this album a solid four stars.
Funny coincidence, I just listened to this album last week. I saw an interview with someone (I want to say Glenn Danzig?) who said The Saints are this massively influential band to a whole list of punk and metal all-stars. So I checked it out.
Australian punk (or maybe garage)? Ok, I'm interested. Turns out it's great. At least as good as early Ramones, all the anger and the speed and with, honestly, better instrumentation. The vocal delivery (Chris Bailey) sounds a little Mick Jagger, giving this a Stones-on-speed kind of vibe. Ivor Hay and Algy Ward make up an excellent rhythm section (drums, bass, respectively) and Ed Kuepper's guitar solos are excellent -- just a little elevation of the music. You'll really understand The Vines (and a lot of Australian music) after hearing this. I'll also note that the guitar textures are better than average for an early punk band. Just about everything about this holds up. 4/5
I really like it. Reminds me a lot of the Stooges. Will seek out and listen to more of them.
Kicks ass
Interesting album. The arrangement with horns and some of songs were less punky.
Much better than the other recent punk albums
Kinda refreshing to hear a punk band where they’re actually good musicians 4
Australian early punk - sometimes with horns!
Wow long album:0 It was pretty good
This was excellent.
I enjoyed this album so much, and I'd never heard of the saints. Some of the lyrics haven't aged well, but it's not aggressive. Classic punk of that era with the perfect Australian vibe. Definitely revisit this one
Sterretje of 3, misschien zelfs 4.
I am enjoying the fast beats and songs on this album, which surprises me since I have enjoyed very few punk albums so far in the album generator.
I dig this a good bit. For the most part this is straight forward 70s punk, but I do like the added horns, wish they had explored that a bit more. It would have definitely made this album stick out of the pack a bit more (7.8) ★★★½
This is a pretty cool album. They kind of remind me a bit of an Aussie Clash, leaning toward the pub rock side of punk and also expanding on the idea of what punk sounded like. Highlights for me are "Know Your Product", "Lost & Found", "Memories Are Made of This", and "This Perfect Day". 4 stars.
Never heard of them!! But this was pretty good
Australian rock continues to be my favorite rock export with this Saints record. Mostly classic meat-and-potatoes punk rock with a few extra flourishes sprinkled throughout (e.g., the horns on "Know Your Product" and some mid-tempo tracks that sound like proto-R.E.M.). If you enjoy stuff like early Clash, give it a shot. Standout Tracks: Know Your Product, This Perfect Day, Untitled, (I'm) Misunderstood Score: B
loved the guitar. never thought i would like this kind of music honestly. fauvorites: no, your product, run down, orstralia.
Though it's way too long for a punk song, I dig No, Your Product. They've got some great guitars going on throughout.
Not usually an early punk kind of guy, but this was pretty great! Opening with a bold energetic brass riff certainly helped. As an Aussie, I can also hear that thing - I don't know what it is, but so often there's some distinct quality to Australian music that you can just hear... I couldn't possibly describe it and it's certainly not all Australian music, but occasionally I hear it and just know. (No, I'm not talking about Aussie accents) The brass on the opening track is very reminiscent of "Kick" by INXS. Same chord structure, big bold brass section intro over the rock guitars... Frankly it's crazy that INXS aren't on this list, but I'll take "Know Your Product" for the "Kick" vibes for sure.
Alright, this is good. This project has reinforced the idea that there are thousands of bands that you are never going to hear. Way better than The Black Album. Lars Ulrich sucks.
This lot have passed me by, never heard of them, but really like. The first Aussie punks apparently
Surprisingly enjoyable
#812. American radio stations were legally restricted to only being allowed to play music from one Australian band back in the day due to Musical Tarriff Act of 1960. And unfortunately they all chose AC/DC instead of this. Too bad, really. 4/5: a cracker
I liked this much more than I expected. I'll listen again.
Punk rock has been hit or miss on the generator, but this is definitely a hit. It's fun and is very punk rock on the nose. Also, it's good to see punk from an origin other than the US and the UK.
Actually really enjoyed this.
4.2 / 5 (Best Punk album so far, 121 albums in) As much as I love to hate on Punk albums and Punk music in general for often being extremely badly produced and mentally absent, I can't bring those arguments down to "Eternally Yours". It's actually not bad at all, which took me a bit by surprise, given that this list never offered Punk music that could be described as well-made before to us. First of all, it sounds very 70s, but the good kind of it. You can definitely hear that this band should've been on the forefront of the Punk movement with how good they sound, but ig they stayed underground. It might point towards The Saints being known in the scene way more than the average mainstream who comes across a Punkrock album only so often. Musically it's pretty fleshed out, by no means what I'd consider perfect, but it's Punk after all. "No, Your Product" especially hits me since it sounds very energetic and a bit orgasmic towards the second part (Although "Not" instead of "No," would've been an even more striking title). I gotta mention here that I really did not expect this level of audiophile quality from this album, it's actually great! Most songs from "Eternally Yours" sound well thought-out which can be said about like 5% of Punk music. But it's good this way since if the other 95% of Punkrock weren't shit, I couldn't claim that this album actually outshines most of them. Well done Saints, honestly. Yeah all in all I'm quite impressed, this album has a quality to it that matches The Offspring, die Ärzte and a couple other actually really good Punk bands. It's imho also the best album we've gotten this week and I consider it to be better than Beck's Odelay. Yes Tecno, you've read that correctly. 😂
Really enjoyed this punky but more rocky Aussie album. Songs blurred into each other a bit but the horns smashed big time.
Harmonica fuck yeah!!
Liked their sound
This album sounds like it could have been recorded in the early aughts. Obviously very influential.
I found this album very enjoyable. I could hear a lot of Lou Reed and Velvet Underground but obviously with a more aggressive, punk approach. However, while it still feels "raw" and aggressive, it also feels refined and well produced in a pleasing way. I'd definitely go back to this. So, this is between a 3.5 and 4 to me, and I'll therefore round up
this is pretty cool
One of my fav punk finds, enjoyed quite a few tracks and the energy
already listened to this prior to using this generator to track my listens, but i'll listen again to rate it. i recall not caring much for it first listen, but we'll see how i like it this time Know Your Product - 5/5 Lost and Found - 4/5 Memories Are Made of This - 4/5 Private Affair - 3/5 A Minor Aversion - 3/5 No, Your Product - 5/5 This Perfect Day - 4/5 Run Down - 4/5 Orstralia - 4/5 New Centre of the Universe - 4/5 Untitled - 4/5 (I'm) Misunderstood - 3/5 International Robots - 2/5 Average score: 3.8/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Decent
No . 28 I had not heard of them before this album came up here for me. Very impressive. Super-tight and musical for a "punk" band.
7 - GOOD
We must imagine The Sex Pistols happy
This is a pleasant surprise on the list, I actually really like this album quite a bit. Some of the more acoustic tracks aren’t exactly my vibe, but the rest of the album is quite a treat. Solid four stars, I love classic punk like this.
(I'm) tempted to say you are a contrarian who needs their list-making credentials revoked if you pick this over their classic (I'm) Stranded, but it's a great record with a lot of stylistic range.
This is some fairly enjoyable punk rock. Not too shabby!
I enjoyed listening the original and alternate versions of the songs on this album. No thrills, no tricks, nothing extra just good solid music.
Excellent find this. A punk band who can actually play. Never heard of them before so thumbs up to this project
Rock n roll, baby.
This was a first discovery of an Australian early punk pioneer that experimented with a horn section. I'm in.
I’m a sucker for a good punk album. And this is. Short punchy tracks and they can play their instruments and sing. All I want
Didn't know them by name but definitely recognized the music. Fun punk album.
This is great. Early Australian punk. Opening with the horn section is a bold move but really works. Saints were punk but pretty great musos as well - check out 'The Way I Made You Feel' by Ed Keupper. And of course - if you haven't done so yet - listen to I'm Stranded. Standout tracks are Know Your Product and This Perfect Day. It's a great album.
This is great. I’ve never listened before but I will definitely do so again. It reminds me of The Stooges and even a punkier version of Television
Yeah, I liked it. The horn section works! It's a punk album, no doubt, but some more ballady stuff, some R&B elements. Will listen again.
Punchy
An early departure from pure punk, which was a smart move in 1978. Purity in that genre could get you running around in circles for a long time. In fact, the Saints seem determined to poke at that part of the punk subculture they found both Down Under and in the UK - the conformity found within the alleged nonconformity. But “you don’t need your brain more” and ultimately “we are watching the same movies.” The critique reminds of the Mothers of Invention, whose parody album “We’re Only In It for the Money” saw through the conformity of the nonconformists a decade earlier. And the overall musical direction reminds me of Green Day, a band that two decades later started out punk but didn’t want to be caged in. Don’t get me wrong, I like punk - but I love those who take its energy and attitude in fresh directions. This album does just that.
Another strong punk entry from 1978 that seems to have a little more sophistication, polish, and lyrical bite than its fellow rebels. I don't normally call out singles, but A Minor Aversion contains all the DNA of REM and some of their fellow alternative rock bands of the early 80s. Kind of like Television without such a dramatic lead singer and voice. Solid album for sure.
Catchy
Highlights: Know Your Product, Memories Are Made of This
Has some bangers
Like many of the albums of this list, this album doesn't have quite the same impact as it might have when initially released in 1978. While (apparently) controversial at time, the horns help keep this album feeling fresh nearly 50 years later. It definitely stands the test of time more than other punk albums of its time.
frischer punkrock von down under. gefällt!
This rips! Great blues-fueled early punk.
it was fun but i am still aussie-phobic
Better than expected. Enjoyed the pace
very good for how quickly it exited my brain.
Good fun rock n roll with a little bit of punk swagger.
Not so important, right?
As an Aussie I’m embarrassed to say I’d never heard of The Saints. To be fair I was only 2 yrs old when this album came out. I absolutely loved this album, it’s a funky/punky album.
A good album, I liked Memories Are Made Of This and Untitled the most.
Solid, underrated punk rock
I really like trashy alt-rock and this was perfectly that!!!
I can't believe I hadn't got around to listening to The Saints before. This album is a blast. It's way more varied than I expected, too. There's piano, sax, and one song has both a country/surf influenced lead guitar part and an acoustic part that reminded me of The Searchers' Needles and Pins. It's the swaggering best bits of Richard Hell and the Voidoids and Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, with a hint of Swell Maps. Chris Bailey's slurred sneer reminds me a bit of Iggy Pop and Mark E Smith. That's not just because I heard The Fall's version of This Perfect Day first.
Ok ok Aussie Punk. Finally something that's not US or UK based. This album seems way before it's time, with the ska-punk elements of the brass band, and is this the first punk album with a harmonica? Very interesting but I dig it and I think somehow fits somehow. Audio quality of this album is really bad though. A bigger fuller sound would be so great, so that's a bit disappointing. Overall, this is pretty much as punk as you can get. Hard sound, anti-establishment lyrics, and the addition of the brass/harmonica is great. It's even more special since they're from Australia. Not sure how known they were at the time in the US/UK, but they would have fit right in with the punk scene. Is the first reference of "crashing out" in No, Your Product? Kidding, but I do enjoy hearing phrases that have come around and are prevalent again.
Solid post punk album with a killer opening track (Know Your Product).
Pleasant surprise, only knew the name. Some weaker tracks, but sounds more expansive than a lot of punk from the same time. 3.5 rounded up Heard before? Nope Owned: No 16/1001, 16/61 (26%) Will I get? I think so
Simple and fun punk rock that goes down easy.
Classic 70’s punk rock with hooks and sneer
An enjoyable punk album.
Pretty standard late 70s style punk (though Australian instead of English!) But I like that style of music and I enjoyed this album.
A pleasant surprise of an album. I've never heard of them. This was fantastic. Horns added depth. Various punk sounds & also some surfer vibes too. 4
Only remember hearing "Perfect Day" from them but this is a great example of early punk and I'd listen to it again. It has the advantage of lots of powerful tracks in a short space of time!
Not heard this one before & enjoyed this one a lot. I can see myself listening again.
Engaging and energetic - can hear their influence in a lot of bands (especially The Strokes in the vocals). The Saints create a compelling intensity that they sustain throughout, and the instrumentation is exciting and an interest meld with the addition of horns. I liked it, planning to revisit.
Embarrassed to say I haven’t heard of these guys. Just like Wire, there was clearly more to the punk scene than I have properly explored. This album started and ended in spectacular, and weird, fashion. I’m in.
This is my kind of punk. Super tight, fun, with excellent riffs. Love the extra horns and instrumentation. Very happy to have discovered this. 4/5
Fun ass punk album from the late 70s. 70s punk is hit or miss for me but this was a hit. Basically the first 6 tracks are a phenomenal run of songs. Then the second half while not as strong is still quite good. This album is a good
I like The Saints, but I've got to say a whole album of Chris Bailey's singing does get to me. It seems that the sound engineer on this album had a similar thought as I felt that the vocals were being slowly turned down against the other tracks. Anyway, I was going to give it a 3 but the last song swayed it up to a 4 as it was a fun end to a good album.
I was still in high school and listening to southern rock bands (sometime late in my HS years, I went to a Dead concert which also included Eddie Money and some now forgotten "southern rock" band (.38 special?) at Autzen in Eugene OR). I did start listening to Talking Heads around then. But THIS band? Nope... That was out of my wheelhouse. My bad.... If I had listened to these guys then, man, I'd be (almost) cool. But when you grow up in southern Oregon, you're bound to be at least 20 years behind the times. In this case 45 years....) I missed out. 4 outta 5 stars.
This album rules. The horns were particularly great.
Pourquoi ? Parce que les chansons sont là. "Private Affair", "A Minor Aversion"...
Enjoyed this. A nice change up
First listen, and while I don’t particularly like the horns on the first track, I did enjoy this album. Some of it is very Ramones-esque in its rhythm, with a bit of Stooges in there too. The Hives have drawn from these guys quite a bit. It’s a cool album, with lots to like. There is energy in the music, a bit of bite in the vocals, and mercifully few horns. It’s less consistent, and more eclectic, than I expect punk to be, and there is a pretty cool pop vibe on there that lifts it from being too Ramones lite. Enjoyed it a lot and will definitely revisit.
Never heard of them before, but great to hear a band prove you can be punk and be good musicians. They deserve to be better known. Not completely sold on the inclusion of a horn section, but I appreciate the variety.
Meh. Not a fan of the lead singers voice. Got annoying pretty quickly. 4/10
Oddly, I enjoyed this album. I’m a big fan of late 70’s punk but unlike the Sex Pistols or The Ramones, The Saints had slower more complicated songs. I’ll listen again.
Nice old-school punk with some stylistic flavor that I really appreciate. Gives me some sort of shoegazey vibes at times but still feels like great classic punk.
4/5
Lots of energy, skilled musicianship and some occasional horns, thought this was a fun listen
This is a hidden gem. I was surprised by the horns at first, worried this was going to be some kind of proto-ska, but they don't dominate throughout. The album is just filled with really solid punk fused with 50s rock-n-roll. Some songs feel like they could just be by The Stooges or MC5, more Detroit punk than British. I think this must get lost in the saturation of great punk records around 1978, but it should be more in the discussion. Rating 4/5 for now, but I could see this moving to a 5/5 after some relistens.
Australian 70s punk rock. Starts with amazing energy. Horns.
This is exactly how I like my punk music. Crunchy, melodic, and with a big sound. Love the use of horns throughout the record. Great album!
Punk bones but college rock flesh, with jangly REM guitars and horns filling out the glam punk NY Dolls inspired sound, a slacker drawl singing style, and some clean power pop hooks complementing the overdriven four-chord garage rock riffs. Extremely effective straight ahead rock and roll, the less said about that harmonica the better though.
Some of my lowest grades so far have been for punk albums. Maybe it's the Strokes-esque adlib at the start of the opening track, but this was genuinely listenable, to the point where I could imagine myself choosing to listen to this. And while Memories Are Made of This has aged... horribly, I think it's easy to look at punk lyrics and get cynical and eye-rolly. But there's parts of this that reminded me of later works. I have listened to 'Bohemian Like You' a bunch, is it really so different from something like 'Know Your Product?'
liked this a lot! first time listening to aussie punk rock!
Decent album, raw, innovative, early punk with horns. Deserves to be on the list.
Good first impressions, opener is great. Similar style to some stuff I already listen to. the mix of brass with the guitar is wow! Never heard anything particularly similar, very unique. Listening to the International Robot Sessions became a bit of a drag but the main album was good. Early punk rock so its a bit before my taste - cool to see how it has influenced later music.
First listen to these guys, fantastic.
Nice to discover a new punk rock album.
Highlights: Know Your Product, Lost and Found, No Your Product, Orstralia In a nutshell: fun punk rock. When asked on r/1001AlbumGenerator how Australians learned about The Saints, one user said: "Maybe it's an age thing, but that [is] similar to asking how you learnt about INXS, AC/DC, Jimmy Barnes etc. You didn't learn about them, they just were..." The Saints were one of a handful of 70s bands that fostered generations of Aussie musicians. Too many to name. What some may not know, they can safely lay claim for recording the first punk rock song- (I'm) Stranded- after the Ramones released their eponymous debut. To quote our mate Molly Meldrum, "do yourselves a favour..." Overall: 7/10
This is so much fun.
"Know Your Product" is an absolutely scorching hot introduction to the album. And the album itself sounds like a blueprint for the garage rock revival of the 2000s. It's a very enjoyable album, that feels like some young dudes wanting to be like their punk idols and also managing to do something new and fresh.
158/1089 - Solid. Arrangements are the best part. Like the recent Beach Boys album nothing stands out in a way that would make this a 5 star imo. Needs more solid and varied song structure.
A fine dose of proto-punk, and another one of those bands where I’m far more familiar with the groups they inspired. Much as I enjoyed the more energetic tracks, it’s songs like ‘Untitled’ that made me appreciate how far ahead of their time they were. That acoustic sound is great - something punk bands just didn’t do at the time but now is obligatory. And the brassy sound in ‘Know Your Product’ was great. Often compared to the Ramones apparently but way more interesting as far as I’m concerned.
Oh wow I was not expecting this at all lol
drei bis vier
odlično! na neke momente podsjeća me na vajolent fems i na strokse, iako je ovo dakako starije. baš fora
Punky and great. Exactly what I wanted. 4/5
I could see where someone might say this is a little soft and the musicality too good for true punk, but it hit the right spot for me. Good album!
Great tunes - thanks!
I was not expecting to love this!
Quiere sobrevivirte. Como la resaca emocional de una noche con los Buzzcocks y una copia barata de Bleak House. Es punk que se arrastra por callejones oscuros y luego silba baladas con la nariz rota. No es perfecto, pero qué bueno que no lo sea.”
A really fun album, remarkably early punk album that combines great tunes, solid musicianship, punk attitude and sneer, and a bit of spice with horns. I had never heard this album before and I'm now going whole hog into the Saints catalog. If you like early punk (Ramones, Damned), you will surely like this.
I enjoyed this album, was great to run too.
Never heard of this band before, I like them
The first thing that surprises me is the horn section. And then, it’s that there’s less than six months between this record and The Sex Pistols’ “Nevermind…”. And then, for about seven songs it’s just that it gets better and better, right until the cataclysmic crescendo of “No, your product”. (Not that I’m suggesting there’s a drop off in quality – far from it.) This is one of those albums – one that’s an entire genre’s output presented as synecdoche; track after track so completely full of potential for others to unravel. There’s “Know your product” (ska punk), “No, your product” (grunge – Kurt Cobain was a fan of The Saints), International Robots (pop punk, obviously) … whole sub genres sketched out in 3-minute bursts. Aside from what’s immanent and what it portends, it’s also a bloody brilliant punk record. Tune after tune, stomp after stomp – pound for pound as perfect as a punk record is likely to ever be. So while they might not have sneered controversial things toward completely safe targets or bopped their way through any bangers wearing occlusive bangs … The Saints could write, and The Saints could play. Maybe better than any of them. “Eternally yours” is punk’s first triumph of substance over style.
Pretty good, reminded me of The Ramones
This fucking rips. It’s like the Dead Boys and Stooges manifested an Australian stepchild and threw them out into the universe. These dudes should be in the punk pantheon for their creativity alone. It’s not a perfect album and there’s some strays here and there, but overall one I’ll come back to.
Smooth! They make it look effortless. A great discovery for me. 4.2
Haven’t heard of this but liked it! Punky but also catchy. A Minor Aversion was my fave.
Another band I’ve never heard of. Liked this though. Incorporating horns added an R&B feeling to the punk sound. Some of the songs reminded me of the Strokes.
fun australian punk with some horn pops for flair, nice
Good!
Great stuff! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of these guys and I thought I knew my punk! This was a really solid punk record, nice mix of songs, I feel a lot of inspiration coming from Lou Reed and maybe The Stooges. Although their use of horns is pretty unique but it works, much like xray spec successfully used sax in punk
Snarly punk attitude. Some sax. Grimy feel. Great energy. They took inspiration from punk and made a very good rock n roll album.
3.5/5
I completely missed these guys back in my more punk focused days. Sharp crisp production more polished than what you'd expect from 70s punk but still has the attitude you'd want.
Pretty fun Rock & Roll album. It has quite a bit of energy and there's good songwriting on here. All the songs on here are pleasant enough and work well enough on their own. I haven't really found a song to stick out and really stay in my mind with this one, probably needs an extra listen or 2 to really click.
A new discovery for me - I'd apparently heard one track of theirs on a compilation, but nothing from this album. It's great fun! Easily holds its own against The Stooges or The Ramones, and has definitely aged a lot better than a lot of punk from the era. The horns are great! I'd probably go 4.5 on this - more listens might push it higher. Fave tracks - "Know Your Product" and "No, Your Product" are both kick ass!
"Eternally Yours" is the second album by Australian punk band the Saints. Relative to their debut, this album " has a bigger, more R&B sound, augmented by a horn section....hmmmm? The album was produced by lead singer Chris Bailey and guitarist Ed Kuepper. Other bandmembers included Ivor Hay on drums and Algy Ward on bass. The band comes a charging out with horns on the lead single "Know Your Product." Bailey has a snotty-ass voice as he takes a cynical look at consumerism. Horns carry the day in this more straight-forward rock and roll song. Ah, here's your punk, "Lost and Found." Melodic and an explosive guitar solo. You got to respect the system but not him. "Private Affair" continues the melodic punk. The guitar is on fire. Bailey is poking fun at the punk culture. Guitarist Kuepper wrote their other single "This Perfect Day" on Christmas Day. Nice song. They bounce back to rock and roll here. The album closes with "International Robots." Chanting in the background. Handclaps. They're having fun. Wow!...Bailey is doing his best Jonathan Richman imitation. This is a really good album. I really started to like it with multiple listens. Not really any bad songs. Punk? Sure but they also throw in a lot of power pop hooks. The musicians are top-notch. There's horns and acoustic guitar. I did not hear anything remotely close to an R&B song but it is a wide category. They are very similar to the Ramones with more musical chops. So, if you like the Ramones, you'll like this (A song by The Ramones was the first song played on my streaming randomizer after this album ended.).
During the genre's golden era, believe it or not, Australian punk sounded very much like British punk. Like the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Not a bad thing by any means - there's plenty of great punk to be found here. 'Lost and Found', 'Private Affair', 'The Perfect Day', and 'New Centre of the Universe' are all exceptional, traditional punk tracks. But there's an almost vintage feel to this album, a Stooges edge, and a classic Rock' N Roll edge too. It's a punk record that appreciates the sounds that lead up to "punk" as we know it today. It's very diverse-sounding - it can fall into the traditional sounds of punk just as easily as it can fall out of them. There is a certain pop appeal to the songs here. From the acoustic-driven 'Untitled' to 'Run Down', a straightforward punk track that boasts an almost "country" and "soul" vibe. 'No, Your Product' is another great example of this because, unlike many other punk tracks from its time, it actually progresses when that lead guitar is introduced halfway through and it starts building alongside the vocalist. And this song, 'No, Your Product' is also a masterclass in punk writing - it evokes this itchy, claustrophobic feeling at first - one born out of a repetitive, mundane, and straight life; one that lacks any form of individualism (a common theme on this record). But when the guitar starts building with Chris' cries to break free, the track just bursts open. It's one of the most cathartic moments in a punk album I've heard. 'Orstralia' shares similar sentiments, and is one of the funnier songs here. I also love Chris' deadpan delivery all over this album, a staple of the genre, but here it all feels particularly sarcastic. For how amazing and eclectic everything sounds, it sure does feel like it was achieved almost effortlessly. And that makes for one cool ass record.
3.5ish, but I’m rounding up partially because the previous day’s album was so bad. Again, a punk band that is feeding off the riffs of the ‘60s.
Pretty good. I thought this was closer in style to The Stooges than it was to many of the other punk albums I’ve received. The horns on Know Your Product were an interesting attention grabber. Favorite songs were Know Your Product, Memories Are Made Of This, No, Your Product, Run Down, and Untitled.
Iggy with brass. Finally a decent band I never heard of. These Australians rock.
this some real shit
liked more than i expected. exact type of energy i want out of a punk record
Well go Aussies. A very cool addition to my early punk awareness, They keep all the punk attributes we love and yet are more tuneful, seeming to delight in songcraft. Can't get enough of this.
This was a lot of fun, and had a social/satirical bite to it, akin to the New York Dolls in many ways. I guess The Saints subvert punk a bit with their arrangements, but it's all for the best. While the singer won't ever get credited as having a classically beautiful voice, he does have a bizarre — and therefore original — take on cadence and rhythm, which makes each song an adventure. It certainly spiced up the otherwise straightforward tunes (as did the bass playing). Another band I'd never heard of and enjoyed a lot.
Not sure why I never got around to listening to these guys. This album was killer. I think I'd need a few listens to really determine if this is a 5, but it's definitely a 4. What a great sound they had. Great energy, interesting compositional choices. Great stuff.
Hell yes the Saints rock. Tight, catchy, great vocals by Chris Bailey. Lyrics are fairly generic in the punk vain but honestly I don't really care. I just like the aggro riffs.
i liked it a lot more than i expected to! normally punk isn't really my thing but there were some nice sounds on this album, particularly in the instrumental backings. it did get a little repetitive and sometimes it was hard to tell the songs apart but it made for nice background music when i was at the gym today lol
Hmm strong beginning! For being released in 2009 they did a good job at capturing that early punk sound. I really enjoyed this. I'd feel guilty giving it a 5 so 4 stars.
Solid punk, not too hard.
Just a nice and simple solid punk album.
Really enjoyed. Those aussies never miss! More of this please 1001albumsgenerator.com
Really dope punk. I like how the sound is much more filled here and less stripped down than most punk from that era. Lots of delicious fuzz. The brass sections on some songs are amazing too.
You can't really go wrong with punk from the early era, it was all pretty great, if a bit similar to each other.
I had never heard of the saints before and I was definitely impressed. This punk/alternative rock band is wonderful. Their instrumentation is super fun and usually pretty upbeat. They have a couple really catchy songs on here. It is a bloated album however with a TON of forgettable songs that all kinda water each other down. But the beginning of the album is super strong and I would definitely recommend. But the album unfortunately overstays its welcome by being WAY too long.
Just a really fun punk album that really holds up. It’s fast, it’s grooving, and the horns make for a ride. There are some real gems in here.
This was kinda fun. If I was in the right mood, I think I'd really enjoy this album.
wow. This album rocks! xThrowback to the early foundations of punkrock. I love fast pace of the drums, the drums and the drums. This one will definitly on my longlist.
Awful vocals, but some great punk rock tunes. Love the horns too.
Riproaring rawness Ecstatic energy Fighting fearless Awesome Aussies
Great punk album, will listen to this again
Classic punk!
aussie punk, like this
Australian punk, what's not too like?
Never heard of them - bloody good stuff though :)
Post punk while punk was still happening Love it Dum de dum
After parking, will I keep the car running to finish the song? “Memories Are Made of This” passes this test I’ve unconsciously developed, and it’s not even a standout on this record, a rare punk record that holds my attention throughout. It has swing, surprise, tunes, a brawny guitar played smart, and singing that I want to listen to.
83% Best: Know Your Product; A Minor Aversion; No, Your Product; Run Down; Orstralia; Untitled Must-Hear? Sure
3.8
Overall: 7/10 This is a pretty good punk album! I like that it slows down the tempo occasionally and tries to stand out from the insane amount of punk bands coming out at the time. They even use acoustic guitars and trumpets! Nothing stands out as exceptional but it's still a fun time. Fav Song: No, Your Product Least Fav Song: Memories Are Made of This
Pretty nice classic punk album from down under!
like the punk
I’d never come across these guys before and it’s a weird but likable cross between Iggy and the Stooges and Motown. Definitely worth a listen
Pretty good punk album
3.75 - fun album
A fun and dynamic Aussie punk album with some killer brass hooks, but nothing else too memorable
Wasn't sure about this at first but really like the back half. Solid album
I pressed play on this immediately. Expected mid rubbish but got some dank ass gold. Great punk and a solid mix of alternative. I was still unimpressed for the most part, because I assumed this had come out @1985. To find out this was a seventies album was astonishing
Fett bra
A really solid punk album. Somehow this band has escaped my attention. As a fan of the genre I feel ashamed. I'm sure I'll go back to this one. Maybe it'll be a 5 for me in time. Regardless, I quite like it
I hadn’t heard of The Saints before, and after listening this really surprised me. This is good old angsty punk music that sounds far before its time. There were certainly other punk bands in the 70s, but I’d be hard pressed to find many who still sound as modern as The Saints. Perhaps it could be considered proto pop punk, as there are plenty of catchy melodies to be found here. Anyway, yeah, I like this.
I didn't expect punk to be this musically interesting. There were interesting melodies, horns, catchy choruses. I'm a fan. I'll listen to this a lot.
