Reviews (page 3 of 7)

mjög gott. pönk undir áhrifum osterbergs og co. saxófónn og fleira sem var minna notað annars staðar á tímabilinu.

Fun punk album. I checked out some of their othrt work and it was all good. 3.75/5

Not too bad.

I was wondering what route this album would be going after the first song's big band, proto-ska, influence, and even after the album is over I'm wondering what was going on here. You have post-punk, garage rock type stuff, some pretty noisy, aggressive works (especially for 1978, holy cow!) and more jangle-y guitars like something outta Violent Femmes, it leads to a very versatile album, especially for the punk scene. It can still be pretty repetitive because of the amount of songs here, but I'm just impressed by the work involved here, and it leads to a pretty cool sounding album, especially, again, for 1978. No, Your Product is an awesome punk track.

Super lækkert sweet spot mellem punk og post-punk, vild med produktionen

This was fun and I would certainly give it another listen. It did start to get a tiny bit repetitive halfway through, so not the full five stars.

It was good, but it was the right length. If it was any longer it would be a 3

I didn't mind listening to this one. I don't know that I would be able to pick anything from the album from out of a crowd, though.

Exuberant and fun for the most part. But not a genre that I’ll seek out again.

Australian punk from the 70s was pretty darn catchy! I like this!

Wish there were more songs with horns

i generally don’t love punk but this just came at a good time (otw to mondegreen) at they had an aquabats vibe a little bit

Classic punk rock from out of Australia. Weirdly benefits from auxiliary instruments such as horns, organ, and harmonica, which give certain moments on the album a big punch to them. Otherwise, the riffs are incredible. Edmond Kuepper on guitar never lets up, and vocalist Chris Bailey has a perfect '70s punk rock inflection to his voice. Feels like there's never a bad song on here. This is an exemplary early punk rock record, containing all the best parts of the genre in it's infancy while never losing steam. I really only falls off at the last track International Robots, which sounds like an outtake that was included for kicks. Otherwise, incredible.

It's decent punk! In my opinion the anger doesn't age with the album, but the horns are nice. It's a fair example of what punk was.

Super punk and raw as hell, especially that last song. the energy of this album is killer and i knew by the album name and band that it'd be pretty good but it exceeded expectations.

This is some great vintage punk rock. Never heard of these guys. They sound like a cross between Stooges & Ramones w a dash of Modern Lovers. Really liked the song writing. My favorite was Ostralia!!! Love the horns in that one and wish they had more with horns!!

This is some of the better 70s punk I’ve heard. These Australians are pretty rockin!

Solid punkish rock album by a band of which I wasn’t familiar. Simple but I like their sound.

Pleasantly surprised by the brassy punk vibes—there’s snarling here, but the kind that adds grit, not the kind that's incessant whining snarling.

Some albums meet me on some days where I feel I can't do them justice (for better or worse). Like this and now. I suspect this to be, as far as OG punk rock goes, one of the better or best offerings in this project, but I'm not quite in the mood for it. Will listen again, "No, Your Product" went into my basket. For now, it falls neatly in my 4 star rating: I may not really like it, but it doesn't bore me, has my appreciation and I get why I should have listened to it.

This was a great find. Very much like the Ramones and the new York dolls, but with a slightly better set of players who took it a bit further in terms of playing and arranging. Weirdly reminded me of late 90's punk pop boys Ash at times.

Great energy.

Another band I never heard of, and another reason I'm glad I'm doing this challenge. Good fun punk rock with some horns and harmonica. Reminded me some of Mighty Mighty Bosstones and the Strokes. Favorite track: Orstralia

Never heard of this band, but this is a pretty solid album. Obviously didn't have the cultural impact of the Sex Pistols, but overall I enjoyed this one more as an album experience. A few good standout tracks, especially Know Your Product, Run Down and Orstralia.

A lot of fun. Really sharp and polished. Toe tapping, the musicians clearly are having a good time. A delightful discovery today. I know that "sharp and polished" stands in opposition to the punk aesthetic, but I don't care. I liked it, and if you want to call it punk, I'm on board.

Cool little punk album. Good album, not a whole lot to say.

Kinda like it, old school but catchy...

I liked this one. Maybe a little simple at some times holding it from a 5 for me. Still good punk that I haven ever heard before. Will I listen to again: 75%

Great, straight forward Punk Rock with very nice sounding production

I don't really have much to say about this one, except that of all of the Australian albums my group has gotten so far this is the one I've liked the best. Turns out all they hadda do to win my affection was play some damn solid punk with horns on a few tracks. Who woulda knew?

I’m at a 3.5 and… fine, alright, I’ll bump it up. Shockingly, for a 36 minute album, I think this kinda goes a bit long; 13 tracks is a little much, and some of them circle around the same soundscape a few times in a way that makes listening to the full album sort of a chore by the end. It comes out of the gates pretty hot though, but I only really dug one or two of the final 5 tracks. Sometimes less is more, you know? Instrumentation is super fun, lots of energy, and the horn section that comes up a few times is really fun. Vocals are a bit jarring at times, but I don’t think they’re ever outright bad, just unbefitting a few times. There are some seriously good lyrics on Private Affair that don’t fully get their credit because he goes all spoken word on them instead of belting them out with the energy they deserve. This happens a few times on the album, and while I don’t think it ever ruins the vibe of the song, it just makes me wish for a little more. Ultimately, though, I don’t think there’s a bad track on the album, and that’s the key difference between bumping it down to a 3 and bumping it up to a 4 – I had a lot of fun listening to this album, and I think with a little more time and a little more polish, a lot of my little nitpicks could’ve been cleaned up. This was a good album, and I’ll be nice to it because of that hot start to go with a 4. It’s like a 7/10, though.

Fun, energetic punk. I enjoyed it. 3.5 rounded up

I enjoyed this album

A little more polished than a traditional punk album but still pretty good. I liked it a lot

### In-Depth Review of "Eternally Yours" by The Saints "Eternally Yours," released in 1978, is the second studio album by Australian punk rock band The Saints. The album showcases a significant evolution in their sound, characterized by a broader musical palette and deeper lyrical content. Here's an in-depth review focusing on lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, along with a balanced assessment of its strengths and weaknesses. #### Lyrics The lyrics on "Eternally Yours" reflect a more mature and introspective approach compared to their debut album, "(I'm) Stranded." Chris Bailey, the band's frontman and primary lyricist, explores themes of disillusionment, personal struggle, and societal critique. Songs like "Know Your Product" critique consumer culture and the superficiality of modern life with lines such as: > "You've got a big big mouth and nothing to say." This sharp, biting commentary is a hallmark of Bailey's lyrical style throughout the album. "A Minor Aversion" and "Private Affair" continue this trend, delving into personal and social conflicts with a raw, unfiltered lens. The lyrics are often imbued with a sense of urgency and frustration, reflective of the punk ethos. #### Music Musically, "Eternally Yours" represents a significant departure from the raw, stripped-down punk of their debut. The incorporation of brass instruments, particularly evident in tracks like "Know Your Product," adds a rich, dynamic layer to their sound. This brass-driven approach gives the album a distinctive flavor that sets it apart from typical punk records of the era. The album's opening track, "Know Your Product," features a prominent horn section that drives the song with an infectious energy. The addition of saxophone, trumpet, and trombone lends a soulful, almost Motown-like quality to the music. Tracks like "Lost and Found" and "Memories Are Made of This" also highlight the band's expanded musical range, incorporating elements of rock, soul, and R&B. Guitarist Ed Kuepper's work on this album is notable for its versatility. He seamlessly shifts between aggressive punk riffs and more melodic, textured playing. The interplay between Kuepper's guitar and the brass section creates a rich, layered sound that is both complex and accessible. #### Production Produced by Chris Bailey and Ed Kuepper, along with sound engineer Mark Moffatt, the production on "Eternally Yours" is a significant step up from their debut. The album's sound is polished without losing the raw energy and edge characteristic of The Saints. The production quality allows for a clear separation of instruments, which is particularly important given the diverse range of sounds and the inclusion of brass instruments. The production captures the intensity of the band's performance while enhancing the clarity and punch of each track. The brass sections are well-integrated into the mix, providing a full-bodied sound that complements the core punk elements. The balance between the vocals, guitars, and brass is expertly managed, ensuring that no single element overwhelms the others. #### Themes "Eternally Yours" explores a wide array of themes, reflecting both personal and societal concerns. The overarching theme of disillusionment runs through many of the tracks. "Know Your Product" critiques the commodification of culture and the emptiness of consumerism. "Run Down" and "Orstralia" delve into feelings of alienation and frustration with the socio-political landscape. Another recurring theme is the struggle for authenticity and meaning in a superficial world. "Private Affair" addresses the invasion of privacy and the public's obsession with celebrity culture, while "No, Your Product" and "This Perfect Day" critique the artificiality of societal norms and expectations. The album also touches on themes of nostalgia and memory, as seen in "Memories Are Made of This," which juxtaposes past experiences with present realities. The reflective nature of these lyrics adds depth to the album, offering a more contemplative side to The Saints' punk ethos. #### Influence "Eternally Yours" has had a lasting influence on both punk and alternative rock music. Its fusion of punk energy with soul and R&B elements was ahead of its time, paving the way for other bands to experiment with genre-blending. The incorporation of brass instruments into a punk framework was particularly innovative, influencing later acts that sought to expand the sonic boundaries of punk rock. The album's thematic content, addressing issues of consumerism, authenticity, and social alienation, resonated with listeners and provided a template for other bands to tackle similar subjects. The Saints' willingness to evolve and experiment with their sound has inspired countless musicians to push beyond the confines of traditional punk. #### Pros and Cons **Pros:** 1. **Musical Innovation:** The integration of brass instruments and exploration of diverse musical styles set "Eternally Yours" apart from other punk albums of its time. 2. **Lyricism:** Chris Bailey's introspective and socially conscious lyrics add depth and resonance to the album, making it more than just a collection of songs but a commentary on contemporary issues. 3. **Production Quality:** The polished production enhances the clarity and impact of the music, allowing the complexity of the arrangements to shine through. 4. **Thematic Depth:** The album tackles a wide range of themes, from personal struggles to societal critiques, offering listeners a rich, multifaceted experience. **Cons:** 1. **Departure from Pure Punk:** Some purists might argue that the incorporation of brass and the move towards a more polished sound dilutes the raw energy that characterized their debut album. 2. **Cohesiveness:** While the diversity of sounds is a strength, it can also make the album feel somewhat disjointed at times, as it shifts between different musical styles and themes. 3. **Accessibility:** The thematic complexity and genre-blending might make the album less immediately accessible to listeners who prefer straightforward punk rock. ### Conclusion "Eternally Yours" by The Saints is a landmark album that showcases the band's growth and willingness to push the boundaries of punk rock. With its innovative use of brass instruments, polished production, and thought-provoking lyrics, the album stands as a testament to The Saints' artistic vision and influence. While it may challenge some listeners' expectations of what punk music should be, its bold experimentation and thematic depth ensure its place as a significant and enduring work in the punk rock canon.

A fun punk sound, with Standouts hard to choose.

Enjoyable.

I was surprised by this one. A really good punk album, with some blues mixed in and a horn section.

This album is exactly what that first wave of punk was. It's fun, energetic and not boring at all. The songs are in a great order and it's perfectly produced. If this is what you're into it should be up your alley. I'd say they are sadly under appreciated (or even heard of)

Surprisingly catchy punk rock!

Great Album, really enjoyed it.

Cool stuff

Surprisingly good!

Never heard of these guys before. Really good old school punk. 3.5 stars.

Straya.

An early classic punk record heavily featuring horns and following in the footsteps of earlier glam rock and the pop punk of the Ramones. Songs evoke New Wave (the surf riffs, jangles, horns, pop singing style, chorus effects) and garage (60s grooves, sporadic drumming, bluesy forward vocal style). "This Perfect Day" is gothic, "Untitled" is power pop, and "I'm Misunderstood" is rockabilly. A few duds on here that don't work, but a lot of the deep cuts have appealing pop hooks. It's a unique sound which plenty of creative ideas. Very accessible with several standout tracks. Nothing too outstanding but it's fun and I will revisit this. Favorites: Memories are Made of This, No Your Product

It's your typical punk album

This is an album made for me; unfortunately, it is too long to pay attention to all the songs.

Its was quite good, just not perfect.

Cool album from a brand new band to me. Really enjoyed, did blend together a bit.

Pretty good. I wish the horns from the first track were a bit more prevalent throughout to give it a more unique sound, but it's still a great time. Solid, simple, catchy punk, totally unknown band and songs, so the project is doing just what I wanted. Love the Aussie sneer in the vocals too. 19/03/24

I love this! And I've never heard it before! Wow, this is such a treat for a Friday. I love 70's punk rock, so I'm slipping into this one like a warm, welcoming bubble bath after a long and exhausting day spent dismantling the patriarchy from within. We don't get a lot of Australian music shipped up to Canada and these guys were probably completely overshadowed by the NY and British punk scenes at the time, which is likely why I've never heard of them until now. But so much of this lyricism resonates with me, especially today. The only thing I dislike is the horribly off putting album cover. Not punky enough, and too shitty, it’s not helping the band look appealing.

Sometimes it's just nice to have a straightforward punk album. This album was punchy and driving. Though it has less sneer than the Sex Pistols and isn't as experimental as the Clash, this album embodies its time and didn't have a dull moment.

I had never heard of these Australian punks but there are some bops here.

The Saints - Eternally Yours Australian punk band. I really enjoyed this album. 4/5

This is a solid album. I'm loving the driving force throughout the length of it. The walk of music hits every song. You can tell this would have gone down well in a sweaty, smoky pub in the 70s and 80s.

Not up to much lyrically, but really sharp musically and reminds that punk is more than just anarchy.

Kick ass punk rock. Sorry I didn’t hear it back in the day

This was good! Surprisingly so, really. I was expecting some horrible thrashing, but it's musically pretty interesting and has a bit of depth. The singer is obviously a bit of an irritant, but that's probably to be expected. But overall, a great discovery.

Great album.

Wow. Starts with a bang. Just a lot of energy. Lost and found seems like Green Day took some liberties from this song. Really enjoyed the passion and energy.

Very good album and I did very much enjoy the songs on there.

Rips. Can still remember the thrill of first hearing Know Your Product about 20 or so years ago. Not a perfect album but when it's good, it's pure energy

Well, I can certainly say that the production on this album sounds like absolute shit. That's not particularly unusual on early punk music albums, particularly ones that were produced by the band themselves. However, under the hood of this album is a lot of neat stuff. I love that they included horns in a lot of these tracks. That was a really innovative idea for early punk music. The vocals sound good, given the overall quality of the album. Really cool early punk album 4/5

This is fun, and the skills demonstrated are impressive. There are varied instruments being used, more complex arrangements. Sometimes I feel like I can't listen to a lot of punk rock back to back because it blends together, but I did enjoy a lot of these songs. Untitled, (I'm) Misunderstood, International Robots, The Ballad!

This was a great album. The singing wasn’t great, but punk often had that problem. I didn’t pay as much attention to the lyrics as I’d like but I really enjoyed listening to the album. The horn pieces, which threw off some people, I felt added to the soundscape

1977-78 is my favorite period of music. Mostly because of the incredible diversity of really interesting and unique artists recording at the time - funk, soul, country, L.A.'s country-rock, pop, hard rock (classic and Van Halen's new take), soft rock (yacht and the decedents of Pet Sounds), prog rock, german synth-rock, punk, jazz was still kicking, and I'm sure I've missed a bunch. There was so much amazing and interesting music coming out that some real gems are all but lost to history. Never Mind the Sex Pistols. Here's the Saints!

It was pretty good. Didn’t have to hear the album twice though. The singer could be better but the music was fun.

Early punk/pop...enjoyed this.

I liked it I’ve never heard it or them really. Would listen again.

good one

Get up and go punk rock from the late 70s, when experimental sounds, discord, and anarchy were musical. I’m beginning to see the birth of so much diversity of later years came from the sounds of the late 70s. Probably won’t listen again, except for the last song. That was fucking funny.

Dope Australian punk! Loved it

Good fun punk record - right up my street.

Liked this, early Punk, very listenable, will check out more by the artist

Confused by all the reviews calling this raw punk when it's surprisingly polished and the better for it. Was prepared to give a 3 but enjoyed listening all the way through so rounding up to 4, bit long I think

Song: Know Your Product I'm going to admit, going into this, I was relatively apprehensive. I typically try to keep an open mind, but three of the last four days have all been strikeouts for me, and two of those songs were rock-adjacent (hated Rush, really hated Dinosaur Jr.). So, when I saw a punk album come up, I was sure I'd hate it. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Is the singer especially musically gifted? No. Is his voice a little monotone and grating? No. But does he sound like he's whining and complaining? Absolutely not, he sounds like he's having the time of his life, and that's a stark contrast from the other rock songs I've listened to through this project. Some of the lyrics are objectively hilarious (let's shoot the professor!) but the subject of the song also seems pretty topical, considering today's age of constant advertising. Also, I really loved the brass section in the mix there, that's not a sound I usually hear in rock or punk and it was a really great addition. Generally, this was a really solid track, and probably my favorite rock or rock-adjacent song of the project so far.

Really good early punk. Fast, hard, raspy vocals. Checks all the boxes.

Why do I like this so much? Solid classic Punk sound... never heard them. Love the bass. We open with some brass hooks. Then we get some catchy early punk. The on Run Down week got a harmonica going ham! This is awesome!

Todella menevää kamaa, sopii hyvin vähän kevyemmän musan kaipuuseen! 4/5

Discovering a lot of new music

Neat little punk band that seems to be not so well known. Fun stuff.

Skv. Wikipediu sagði Robert Christgau að brassið á þessari plötu væri misheppnaður brandari. Ég spyr, hefur Christgau einhvern tímann ekki talað út úr rassgatinu á sér? Hresst pönk, merkilega fjölbreytt og brassið á mjög vel við. Fyrirfram gisk 3 stjörnur, lokaniðurstaða 4.

I liked it!

Punk Rock, with horns and harmonicas 1978 Standouts: Know Your Product, This Perfect Day Others: Lost and Found, Private Affair, No Your Product, Untitled,

Awesome. Reminds me of the Stooges from time to time, which is a good thing. I can also hear bits that likely influenced the likes of Ty Segall.

Sehr zugängliches Punkalbum, Know Your Product macht absolut Laune, private Affair auch absolut solide.

The horns and arrangement lift it above others of its genre even if I found it a bit samey

Fun album, but has the same problem all punk albums have - after a while it's clear you're hearing the exact same song. But it's a fun song. Favorite tracks: Know Your Product, Memories are Made of This, Private Affair, A Minor Aversion.

It's a really solid early punk record with with overt nods to glam and pop. This one was a pleasant discovery for me.

Brand new to me, I was very non pleasantly surprised. Sounded very modern for 1978. 3.6 rounded up.

One of my favorite punk albums so far. Loving it!

Favourite songs: Know Your Product, Lost and Found, "No, Your Product", Run Down, New Centre of the Universe, Ostralia, (I'm) Misunderstood, The Ballad, Untitled Least favourite songs: Private Affair, Champagne Misery 4/5

Never heard of the saints, but this is a soild punk album, deserves to be on the list. Love the raw energy while still keeping it together musically. Added to my frequent rotation.

When I saw this, I worried that it was going to be another dime-a-dozen punk band. I was instantly proven wrong. Trumpets in early 70s punk? It worked perfectly. Digging in a bit more, I found that The Saints were well ahead of the game. Contemporaries of The Ramones who brought punk to Australia before the Sex Pistols formed. Why are they not better known?

Nice mix of punk and pub rock. A bit of adverts and a bit of Dr feelgood

Punk, now with horns!

Rocking eternally. 4 stars.

Half listened

Very good one. Here's an 80s brit band worthy of the list.

Like them Antipodians

I gave this one casual listen and enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm generally a fan of punk particularly when it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Eternally Yours by The Saints is a raw and influential album that embodies the spirit of punk rock. Released in 1978, it showcases the band's evolution from their punk roots to a more diverse sound. Tracks like "Know Your Product" and "Private Affair" feature slashing guitars and propulsive rhythms, capturing the energy of the punk movement. The album's production is stripped-down, adding to its authentic charm. Chris Bailey's distinct vocals drive the album's rebellious message. Eternally Yours remains a pivotal release in punk history, marking a band's growth while staying true to their raw essence. It's a must-listen for punk enthusiasts and a testament to The Saints' lasting impact on the genre.

-the very beginning of this sound so much like the strokes -i Love the horns in the back -i really like the slight harder rock version of like. the strokes going on here -i like this band that i had never heard of more than i thought i would -i do like the vibes they created in the studio that day -we Are all so groovy so true king -overall a solid four star album! i enjoyed that greatly

This was pretty good. Never heard of them but I enjoyed it.

Solid 70s punk, might relisten eventually BT - Lost and Found - Memories are Made of This - New Center of the Universe

For 1978, this feels way ahead of its time, almost like a treasure chest of hooks and ideas that future generations of bands to plunder. Look at what happens when you add horns to punk riffs – works pretty well, no? “A Minor Version” sounds like an ‘80s anthem written a few years early (with some strong and understated guitar riffs to boot) . The melodious numbers (“Memories,” “Untitled”) hold up better than the full-on ragers which sound generic (if also authentic). One hears pre-echoes of The Jam, The Fall, The Smiths, The Smithereens, Pavement, and so many others on this.

Har för mig debuten är snäppet bättre, men kan ha fel. Väldigt få krusiduller.

This is a very good album, not just the fantastic album opener but above all in the sense of the space, melodies and lyricism that would lead onto the Gobetweens, Triffids and The Church. Good stuff.

Gutes Ding. Kannte ich nich, kann man aber gut hörn. 3-4.

good find 🙏

Alright some more punk! At least this time its from a different "island" nation - Australia. Just gonna listen to this one and drop thoughts as they come... Opening track has almost ska-like elements with prominent horns. Progression feels very familiar; doesn't induce much feeling. I found myself tapping along to Lost and Found, and enjoy Memories Are Made of This. Almost reminds me a bit of Flaming Lips in the best kind of way. Vocal mixing on Private Affair does some interesting things with the stereo distribution. Pretty cool IMO. Guitar feels sort of like early The Offspring. Dropping out of the play-by-play mode, I will say that this album is much stronger than I expected based on the ('popular') opener. These guys show a wide range and several songs show really interesting production experiments that pay off. They may be "punk" but their instrumentals have depth that a lot of the early staples of this genre lack. Beachy vibes out of The Perfect Day TBH I haven't had a chance to finish, but based on what I've heard I'm a 4 / 5 here. I plan to listen to the rest later, but do not trust myself to retain my review. This was surprisingly well-produced and varied punk, and I enjoyed it.

Punk + horns = love

Fun punky boys rippin and roaring around. Punk particularly fits the Australian aesthetic in my mind (having never been).

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Non abrasive punk. A grand time

Favorite song: Know Your Product, Orstralia. This could be a 5* if I listen to it some more and it sticks.

Light 7

Guitars - check Drums - check Extra point for horns Kick ass songs - Ramones vibe but dare I say a little better. How come I’ve never heard of these guys. Should have been bigger.

Pleasantly surprised! The vocal style was a bit grating at times, though not unexpected. Untitled stuck out to me (along with Know Your Product).

When I saw a band I'd never heard of, from the seventies, my heart sank ... But this ended up being pretty solid

Never even heard of these, but I’m not quite sure how! This is pretty mint, and right up my street. Reminds me a bit of Rocket From The Crypt at times - I think they definitely owe The Saints a pint or two! Also cant believe this was a record from the late 70s - a good decade before their time and well ahead of their peers

Never heard of the saints before, I think some sort of subconscious expectation that it would sound like all saints made it particularly surprising they were a punk band. Reminded me of a more punky Stooges with a brass section that really made it stand out. First half of the album was better but still great overall.

I often enjoy Punk Rock and this album starts with a banger. Had not heard anything by these guys before but thought it was really good. For something released in the 70s it sounds quite ahead of it's time. Highlights: Know Your Product Lost and Found This Perfect Day I'm Misunderstood

New to me but really enjoyed it.

Punk lives! Beautiful.

wish all albums had this many songs. good punk album

Hearing these older punk rock albums is making me appreciate it more and more. The rawness is just real af.

Punk-rock en los inicios del movimiento. Un 4.

Again, punk is fun. Especially with a brass section.

Best: Memories Are Made Of This Worst: A Minor Aversion Pretty good, I think they are underrated

Punk is definitely not my thing, especially early punk from the late 70s, early 80s. So it was to my great surprise that I really enjoyed this album! Admittedly, everyone seems to agree that it's a very poppy, glossy punk album. That must be why I like it! The songs are rocking, off and on super catchy, fun, and the instrumentation is rich. These guys are talented! Why haven't I ever heard of this group? Totally fun. Would absolutely listen again. 4/5

Solid punk album. Addition of horns gives it that bit of extra to make it great.

Delicious original Australian punk rock.

Incredible. I can hear how this band could have influenced other bands. Punk Rock with a lot of emphasis on the rock side. I really liked this album so much that I dove into their first. This will be added to my list of favs for the new year.

Good fun punk, I dig it.

I liked it on first listen, maybe a 3.5 but I'm gonna relisten... A solid 4. Prolly in that 3.75 range but I like punk, so kill me. Hear a lot of the cure in this, which makes sense bc apparently the saints had some influence on them. I liked it and the music reminds me of snowboarding video game soundtracks from the 2000s a bit, and that's a huge plus. Nothing specific that's super memorable imo, but good vibes all around and It's got some songs I can throw on the snowboarding playlist. Also, i kinda liked the international robot recordings, bite me.

Bra!!! Speciellt no, your products och new center of the universe va bangers

Banger

Zamn! Who would’ve thought an aussie could rock like this?

Good fun. Sounds a bit like the sex pistols

Sve u svemu dost dobar punk rock album, ali zbog: Know Your Product, Memories Are Made of This, Run Down, Ostralia, New Centre of the Universe je sigurna četvorka.

classic muscular punk rock and roll

Enjoyable 70s punk rock

This was a bit of a hidden gem - I'd never heard of them. Did they make it out of Australia?

Leuk punkalbum, de koperblazers zijn een meerwaarde!

The horns on Know Your Product are amazing and give an old school soul vibe to a punk album. First punk album for the listening project, and it's one I'm not familiar with so I may be scoring it highly for recency bias - but it's quite good. Some slinky basslines on this record - Lost and Found is surprisingly fun and fluid.

Love this album. Not every track, but Know Your Product / This Perfect Day justify its existence alone. A great step forward from their first album, maintaining the punk energy but with a bit more variation in tempo.

A little gem. Raw punk-rock with just enough pop to make it easy and a bit more complex. Added to favorites.

Nice band of punk-rock. I liket it. The first song is very good.

Ooohh I love it. Sounds like a Caswell album. Here for some punk rock 🤘🖤

When Chris Bailey died earlier this year I was inspired to dig into The Saints, thinking I didn't know them - but obviously I did, they wrote stone cold classics. Starting with I'm Stranded off the debut. Know Your Product is an absolute banger. The rest of the album is solid, well produced, is it post-punk? I mean some of this could have come out this year, people are still going for this sound, it feels oddly contemporary.

I am not so familiar with the Saints but as expected this album was great. Favourite song no your product. Maybe it just falls short of being 5 star.

Eternally Good

SOOO HYPE GOOD VIBES!

Gostei muito, bem garagem

Sramota da ovo nisan ranije sluša. Super je

Fantastic garage rock record - not heard of The Saints before but I will check out their discog now!

Influences and influential. And This Perfect Day. What more do you need?

Wow! Best punk band I had never heard of before. Well, I had heard of them, but wasn't familiar with their music. Sort of seems like an Australian version of Iggy Pop. 4 stars.

The first two tracks hit you hard and fast and overall this is a very solid album. I had never listened to the Saints before and was pleasantly surprised by their sound and I'm instantly a fan. Since this is their second album, I'm curious about their debut and the rest of their discography, as well.

A clear bridge form punk to post-punk, one hears a lot of what was to come in the 1980s and ‘90s. The sneering vocals sound an awful lot like The Fall. The Smithereens stole “Memories Are Made of This” for “Blood and Roses.” and doesn’t “Orstralia” sound like “Sweet and Tender Hooligan.” 3.5 rounding up for being so influential.

what a pleasant surprise, love a punk album from this era that totally rocks that i have barely ever heard of

Very excellent punk!

Eternalises a thorny, lusty sound that I hadn’t heard much of before. Pretty good

Really cool, well executed punk album. I enjoyed the experimentation and drawing elements of other styles in the first half, but the second half seemed to devolve into more straightforward Ramones-style punk. Would have liked to hear a bit more of that diversity carried through to the end. Overall still very enjoyable, I am surprised I have not heard this before, will definitely be coming back. Highlights: Know your Product, Memories Are Made of This, Run Down

Wow really great, never heard of these guys. Punk albums that still sound decent are few and far between but this is like London Calling in that it has other stuff going on. The horns and acoustic bits worked really well

Didn’t do much for me 1st time around. Had to listen to it twice. Sounded like the strokes but more fun. Good energy.

Хорошая работа The Saints. Вывод: Дальше слушать смысла нет, будет то же самое. Альбом очень самобытный и харизматичный, но чего-то мне не хватило. 4 из 5.

Damn Tge Saints are GOOD. Can't believe I missed them back in the day. I would say they are the most faithful to The Stooges of any band I've heard from that era. 4 🌟

I love this record, and am shocked that I don't own it already. (It's going on my want list). I actually really love the horns, although I know they were divisive at the time. I think they give the album extra punch, without seeming out of place in a punk album. Maybe we are more comfortable with genre cross-pollination these days. I think it also has become clear the extent to which punk was not musical ground zero, but rather a return to the essence of rock and roll, re-imagined in a new way. (Thanks to Simon Reynolds, for that insight). In the same way that the Pistols called back to the Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins rock and roll, the Saints have a bit more Ike Turner in them. International Robots and the (bonus track) of River Deep Mountain High show the rock and roll roots of the Saints. Know Your Product and This Perfect Day are dead set classics, performed (as all of this album) with gusto and infectious energy.

Straight up punk!

Happy to see an Australian band on the list. If you like this, try some other Australian bands of the era: Laughing Clowns, Died Pretty, Radio Birdman, The Triffids

Never heard of the Saints before but I really liked this. An album that is 40 years old but feels like it could have been made yesterday. Enjoyable all around.

Enjoyed this. Got me interested in hearing their first album, which I preferred.

8/10 I like the way punk rock sounds from the 70s It had a surprisingly warm sound, it felt like fun background music you could listen to going about your day it was a cool album, i liked it

Agréablement suprirs, très solide album. Clairement un album phare du mouvement punk, mais à mon avis meilleur que Ramones ou Sex Pistols.

I liked it! I'm honestly shocked by all the punk rock on this list but this was a little bit of a change from the norm. It might have just been the Australian accents that changed it for me but I think it was more than that.

Decent… and a cut above your common-or-garden punk stuff… had an edge!

Primera vez que conozco de este grupo. Se suponía que los 1001 discos son los más importantes de la historia? No digo que sea un mal disco, pero bue

Solid punk album, vocals were grating st times but this had jams for sure 7/10

surprising good

Really good fun - I loved the horns over the punk rock and the cool swagger. Some of the tracks sounded like they might have influenced The Strokes. One to listen to again.

This was pretty great! A punk record kicking off with horns. Man, I got into every little bit of this. good stuff!

Having never heard of this band in my thirty-something years on this planet, this is the second time in a month I've been compelled to listen to this. Once was from reading a history of the Sex Pistols, where this band were decried as too competent for punk tastes (and sported too prosaic a look); and now this app. It's weathered the years rather well, I think - like some kind of unholy alliance between the Stooges and the Rumour. I reckon you can draw a straight line between this and modern acts like the Hives and Barrence Whitfield & the Savages. I like all the bands I've mentioned so far, and I like this too - energetic, spiky but with enough guile to keep one interested once the adrenaline has settled.

Great stuff from The Saints. Almost as good as Stranded. I've only discovered this great band in the Las few months I'm so glad I did. Really great stuff

Never heard of this album or band, but I'm impressed. A solid mix of classic punk with some forward thinking songwriting choices like the use of horns and acoustic guitars. Really enjoyed this!

I've never heard of this band before but I really digging what I've heard so far. Have not had a chance to listen to the album fully today but will definitely give it a full listen when I can. This is definitely more accessible punk.

Music ows SOOOO much to this band!

Very British Punk crossed with some early Bob Dylan vibes. I liked the sound, but some of the lyrics got lost on my ears, and I had to look them up.

Shout out to Johnny P, one of my college roommates who was way into punk music. Senior year Johnny P had a badass mohawk and fought off a would be mugger outside RoFo. Busted up the side of his face something good. The first track of the album, with the brass and saxophone (!) opening, certainly was enjoyable… and misleading. Most of the album is punkish., but not entirely. I would call the album proto-punk … did I just make that up or is it a thing? Whatever it is, the punk songs are more accessible than hardcore punk bands like The Dead Kennedy’s or Minor Threat. This is a good thing. And there are several more rock-like songs sprinkled throughout such as: Know Your Product, Memories Are Made of This, A Minor Aversion, and Untitled. No, Your Product and River Deep Mountain High are highlights of the punk songs while Run Down is a punk song with prominent harmonica, which I had never heard before. And a punk song with saxophone (Orstralia)…wtf is going on?!? I’ll tell you what is going on…a great marriage between punk and other non-traditional elements. Proto-punk…see I told you it’s a thing. This album also makes me happy because I feel bit closer to Johnny P who has been having a hard time in adulthood. You know that would be mugger? We’ll it was really Johnny P getting chased for shoplifting from RoFo. Their fried chicken was delectable after all. His face really did get busted up something good. However, it was because he was drunk off his ass and tripped over a curb.

Initially skeptical but started jamming to the album by the end. Good background noise

Punk limpio y bien hechecito, sin pretensiones pero sin mucha propuesta tampoco. Está ok. Top track: River Deep Mountain High

Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Know Your Product, Memories Are Made of This, Private Affair, Run Down, Orstralia, New Centre of the Universe, Untitled Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Surprisingly really liked this one. A 5/5 punk album, unfortunately the downside of that being that punk kinda sounds the same a lot of the time. I had to check my computer multiple times to make sure I hadn't accidentally shuffled the album because some of the riffs sounded the exact same. Still a really good album, but that's why it's not a 5.

Go on, Southampton. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

More punk records should be this lush

A really good and melodic 1970s punk album. Further elevated by horns and harmonica making this pretty great.

It's like the Ramones... but less shit... and with horns. It's punk so it all kind of runs into each other, but I actually think it's a lot of fun! Also 'International Robots' is Aunty Donna as fuck

Punk-rock en los inicios del movimiento.

So glad this came up. They are such an influence on so many artists (Nick Cave, U2) and I really didn't know anything about them. And I always love adding another Aussie band to my arsenal.

British punk rockers are my jam. Love the energy, the accents, the wit.

Punk with brass from 1978

Sounds about three decades too late. Good mix of 70s and 90s punk In 2009. Lost and Found, Know your product as strong openers

I was surprised.... Pretty good old punk that I've never hear of

nifty punk album 4.5 stars?

Love the different choices of instrumentation, love the horns (and the fact that it doesn't sound like ska). Think it really sets it apart from the crowd. Youthful, snotty, fun, punk. Favorite tracks: "No, Your Product", "(I'm) Misunderstood"

Good old punk

3.75/5. Enjoyable. I am always cautious of punk albums but this one was good. The songs were nice to listen to.

sounds like every other rock album. 3/5

Never listened before. Fun!

For early punk rock this was a decent album.

Yet again punk falls short

A solidly “meh” punk album (yeah-makes no sense to me either. Just like the album)

Great punk rock record! I didn't know this band, but I'll be checking out more of the discography!

Well well well. If there's anyone I didn't expect to find on 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die it's Algy Ward! The same Algy Ward who founded Tank, the loudest band I ever saw. This Saints album is altogether a little more restrained and even melodic in places.

Love me some post-punk album (I love the genre in general) but I doubt this would be a good album to label as one of those albums you should hear before you die. I did listen to it and yeah, another punk album from the 70s I guess. Nothing stood out for me in particular. Good songs but yeah.

Interesting early new wave pinkish thrash. Enjoyed.

Wasn't expecting horns in my punk album today. Makes it weirdly feel like ska. I didn't dislike it but it's nothing special to me.

Quite fun. I like the guitarwork.

Fun, sounds like gallimaufry of the Stones, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed.

Rock's classic rhythm guitar + raspy vocals combo

I was fully ready for this to just be another run of the mill punk album, but the fact that they used more than your classic 3 instruments made this one feel like it had a bit more of a personality.

I liked punk as a kid but as I get older it’s the genre I connect with least. This was above average punk, and the horns were a nice flourish. But having a hard time getting through it

Nothing to do with the album but man I'm tired of these extended albums on Spotify. The real album is only 36 min but they give us this 80 min playlist and it happens all the time. I have to look the albums up and create a playlist with what the real album was. All these bonus tracks and demos. Ugh. Just give us the original album as it was intended!! As for this album, definitely different feel than most punk. Kind of ska, kind of bluesey. Has a Social Distortion feel. Solid 3 stars

This was inoffensive background listening

Aussie aussie aussie! Oi Oi Oi! (3.5)

Standard punk. All sounded the same.

Not understanding why so great.

I liked it enough. It wasn't bad.

Punk australiano, melódico pero potente. Know your product es un comienzo excelente, Lost and found es más normal. Memories are made of this retoma el buen gusto, recuerdan a The only ones, es decir buen power pop.

a whole lot of eh

Fun punk album that was totally new to me. Had some cool instrumentation, but ultimately a lot of punk from that era sounds very samey top me. 3.5 stars

fun one

5/10… pre punk / pub rock / *1978

Var sikkert veldig kult på syttitallet. Ser for mæ at det blir runkering i Feedback-redaksjonen når denne kommer på.

Australsk punk som funker. Blåserekka overbeviser ikke, men resten holder god standard.

Some classic punk rock. I liked this

Repeating the phrase "oh little girl" a bunch if times is never a good sign... That being said, I quite enjoyed this! I thought the front half of the album was significantly stronger than the latter half, unfortunately, where I did lose interest towards the end.

70s punk type music. I guess it’s special because they are from Australia.

Not my favourite genre, but I can respect it. What is interesting is that sometimes it sounds a lot like 90s rock/grunge, which was kind of revolutionary in the 70s. Unfortunately, the best I can do is a 3, because I don't like punk.

Who would have guessed there were some many influential early punk groups? This one is fine, but pretty much as forgettable as all the rest of them.

Glossy punk

You know when a singer is so bad you actually end up enjoying it? It’s giving those vibes… for the first few songs and then it dies off. A bit of a temu ramones/stones. Didn’t hate it… but also not going to add it to the rotation. 2.7

Fun record and I didn’t know it at all when it popped up.

A few decent tracks to be found here. The vocals are a bit annoying at times. Trying too hard to sound “punk”, but it’s far better than most of the rubbish on this list.

The Saints are a band I’ve not heard of before. I was intrigued to listen to an Australian punk band. Sonically, I really liked the album. Vocally, I was perplexed. Initially, the singer’s voice didn’t appeal to my ear at all. Then, on track 4, I could’ve sworn there were two guys singing (it appears it’s just the lead singer changing up his vocals a bit). As I proceeded down the track listing, I noticed a shift in the vocals that was much more pleasing to my ear. I’m amazed at and impressed by the way the singer used his voice throughout the album. The album’s sound suffers a bit from sameness; it was noticeable, but I didn’t mind it much because the musicianship is so good. Overall, I’m glad to have heard it, but won’t revisit it and didn’t find any standout songs I’ll add to my library.

Better than I expected. Still not great, but not horrible either

Very solid punk album. Good energy, unpretentious and a fun romp overall. It exceeded my expectations.

A pretty entertaining 70s punk album. Reminiscent of The Clash. Highlights: "Memories Are Made of This" and "Perfect Day"

First track was great. Reminded me of Bowie and Iggy. Dipped a bit in quality as the album went on but I did enjoy it.

Mi punkerito interior está feliz de tener más opciones para cuando quiera escuchar punk de fondo.

dum diddy dum diddy dum dum dum

Fine to listen to, but its not a masterpiece. It gets repetitive after a few songs

No hagiography from me, but I liked the robust guitars, the generally neat chords changes, and the guy had a better voice than the band deserved. 2.5 Yer man on the front cover has a punchable face. Not that I’d do that - I am not a violent person and anyway he’s Australian, he’d probably enjoy it. I felt well predisposed to dislike this and actually I didn’t dislike it. So I should probably give a half mark more than I would have if the front cover had someone endearing and inoffensive on it - Churchill, say. Even in the seemingly formulaic moments like New Centre of the Universe, the guitars offered nice, thoughtful little details. This is a cut above standard punk rock fare I reckon and then, perhaps more glam and very much more Rolling Stones than many of their punk peers - the horns in the opener are a mere red herring, but the vocal delivery recalls Jagger all the way through. I liked ‘No, Your Product’ very much, despite its stupid title - it’s a very cool little chord sequence. 2.5/5

nice enough

Slick 70s Aussie punk that holds up pretty damn well. Love the addition of horns on the lead track (and apparently so did Kurt Cobain)

Nothing special to me. I'm not a big punk fan, but I didn't hate it. Favorite track(s) Memories Are Made of This Untitled

More British punk

70’s British punk sound

I think I’m being generous giving this three stars. It made pretty much zero impression. Very meh. But if I paid closer attention, it probably would bug me a little more. The guy’s voice is not pleasant. So true grade likely would be closer to 2.5.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I feel Frenzal Rhomb would be better suited to the list.

it's fun. 3.5

Pretty decent punk rock, but I just got tired of listening after 40 minutes of the same sound. Wish I could understand what they were saying.

Aussie punk rock from with the 70s sound. Best when the tempos are up and the attitude is snarliest. A tight band that can craft a good song. A few tracks size up the sound with some added horns to mixed effect. A couple of gems, and the rest is pretty straightforward punk - enjoyable but not strongly memorable. I don’t see the unique identity that really helps bars in the genre stand out though.

Pojma nimam. Let's go! Oh, ok, koj k odprem vidim spet najdaljši seznam - I guess ne morm totalno blind it notr, ampak spet preverit na wiki originalen tracklist. Ok. Zj pa res. A, ok, it's an extremely average day. Fuck me. Na wiki je pisal punk rock - a je the punk in the room with us? O, lejga, prikazal se je ("Private Affair"). K začetek je mal zavajajoč, s trobentami ("Know Your Product"). "(I'm) Misunderstood" je kul. Sicer pa se mi je vse mal blendal skup. Tazadn "International Robots" je bil kr inventive.

Not my pick for an Australian rock album, but it really must have been fundamental to the progression of the Punk scene. It reminds me of the Ramones, but not to the same extent in quality. Pretty good album to have on speakers, and they would be a good band to see live. Honestly, this album and every Australian album pick remind me of how much we are missing in this list. So many great talents, including INXS, Cold Chisel, Men at Work, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly, and so many others that would be on the list if they were British.

Okay, a nice little punk entry. Really standard '70's punk. A little more rock. Influential as it was actually the first non-American punk album released predating the Sex Pistols and the Clash. It has the hit. It has horns. Really solid. 3's across the board.

In a predictable move I liked the parts with the horns the best

The Saints is the collective noun Len Houmous uses for his testicles. 3.2 6/13 No, Your Product

Yeah this was nice. Good old fashioned soft punk rock.

This is a wee little album! It’s at its best when the band sticks to the punk rulebook and adds flourishes of addictive melodies (the obvious highlights like the opener, “Private Affair”). When the tempo slows down, the songs should, in theory, feel like welcome breathers, but oddly this reveals some repetitiveness that doesn’t work in the band’s favour (“A Minor Aversion”). There’s some neat Stooges worship here and there, but it’s the Saints’ knack for memorable songs that lets them stand on their own. With this, the Saints created something really fun and worth revisiting. I’m actually surprised that you don’t see their name pop up more often—maybe I’m overrating this a bit, but I’m having a great time spinning it.

Very average punk.

Took some getting used to, the songs can feel a little same-y by the end but there's a real punk anti authority energy going on that feels very raw and real. Songs with the horns go harder than the rest but i would recommend to punk lovers.

598/1001 2026.04.22 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

It's a punk album. Sounds like a lot of other stuff from the same time period. 3/5

What an awesome opener. I'm usually not a punk fan because sometimes, the songs just feel like noise. The arrangements on this album were unique. Ostalia showcased some unique sounds that I can't pinpoint, and that is one of the reasons I enjoyed this album. Not to mention, the guitar and durms were alive and so great. The production sounded well mixed to me as well. Favorite tracks: Know Your Product No, Your Product This Perfect Day

You're Living Your Life In A Chain Gang 1001 Albums Generator 274 (4/21/2026) Eternally Yours is a totally fine punky pub rock record, but there isn't much here. I do like the use of the horns throughout, and it's got a good energy, but it's a bit too one-note for me. First half is definitely stronger than the second half. 3/5. Favs: Know Your Product Lost And Found No, Your Product Least Fav: A Minor Aversion

A peppier punk record than one would expect. Wasn’t super consistent throughout, but still an enjoyable listen overall. Leans more towards ska at points.

Well I see where the strokes got all their ideas from, not the worst punk album ever 3.5*

Weak start but got better. Sounds exactly why I haven't heard more than one song of theirs previously.

Lekker voor werken op de achtergrond?

It started fun, still wanted more from it.

Solid punk rock album

I need a couple more listens. Weekends are tough to get a full review but I'm at a 3.5 right now. May change to 4 later but using 3 for now.

Aussie punk, what's not to like. Super listenable, well recorded, and catchy.

This starts out feeling like a pretty generic snide late 70s punk album, but thankfully it gets a bit more melodic past the first track. Pretty driving standard glam-adjacence. 3*, would probably shout out Lost and Found.

Solid punk rock, but nothing outstanding. I hear some of The Ramones, The Clash, and even a bit of The Cure.

Reminded me slightly of The Velvet Underground for one of the songs, then listened to the album in the background of my days 2x, but never deeply attached to it. Would give it another go forsure...
