The worst part of this album is at the very last note of the last song because then it’s back to Brit pop. Extremely well produced blend of modern and folk Indian sound. Enjoyable, catchy and interesting.

I like the inclusion of non western music, but I don’t like movie soundtracks. I’m guessing this is a full Bollywood movie that borders on being a musical which closes the gap a little. Different, not not particularly enjoyable or special. Guessing they just picked a big budget fairly popular film to check off “Bollywood soundtrack”

15th August 2023 Listened a couple of days late throughout the day after D was born! Surprisingly edited this Indian movie soundtrack. Shades of Tarantino with trad Indian vibes. 3.5 if I could.

Bollywood is always entertaining and this one does not disappoint.

Today we have a genre of music that is considerably different to my usual tastes. I can sat with some confidence that I’ve never sat and listened to a Bollywood soundtrack before. I do know that Music and dance is an important aspect of these films in general, so let’s listen and find out how this is! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: One Two Cha Cha Cha, Mera Pyar Shalimar Firstly, if you know the song Brimful Of Asha by Cornershop, that is a reference to Asha Bhosle who sings on this album. I listened to this on the drive from Salisbury to Bath, and this made for a pleasant journey soundtrack. Undoubtedly, a lot of the lyrics were lost on me due to the language barrier, but it sounded nice from a completely sonic experience. I’m not sure it’s tempted me to watch the film or to listen again, but I did enjoy this. Also, I love the sound of sitars. More songs need them!

And the inevitable question is, if Bollywood is a category of music that's officially recognised by this list here, then why this one out of all the millions out there, and even more importantly - why only* this one? * Out of the 878 albums served to me here thus far, this is the first to come from Bollywood. There were 3-4 other Indian music albums thus far.

Passed by quickly enough, was an interesting fusion of Indian and Western music at points, although overall not for me.

3/10. I might be being a little hard on this, just because most of the Indian music that's been on this list has been pretty enjoyable. But this just got on my nerves a bit. There was also the fact that while this is far from the only album on here that is the soundtrack to a movie, this is the only one where it *feels* like you are listening to a soundtrack, and like this really is only intended to be listened to as part of a movie.

Love this one! Lots of different tones and sounds

One two cha cha cha is catchier than....something very catchy. Why it's not appeared on any of those loungecore kitsch classics as it's better than almost all the tracks that do. An interpolation of That's The Way Ah-Hah is also genius. The rest of the album can't quite live up to this twisted magic, which shows George Harrison how to really blend Indian and western pop. But what this list is also all about. Tons of fun. 3.75 so I'll upgrade to a 4.

Next one cha cha cha. For real though, I know Bollywood is a rich vein of music I’ve never dove fully into. But after hearing this record, so I’m wondering why we were given this one as opposed to countless objectively better albums. Some of the jazzier tracks kind of work here, but it’s not often we get it.

Ascending a mountain as the sun set behind me while these enchanting songs from faraway lands soundtracked my journey had me feeling like a proper Bollywood hero.

Very disappointing to get some bilingual version of a bollywood soundtrack with mediocre songs. This list assumes we cannot deal with the real non-western (uk/usa) version of indian music. So it should be bilingual or made with western musicians. It makes me sad.

not really my jam

I can see how this inspired... the Austin Powers soundtrack? It feels like what it is. Namely, a cheesy, 70s film. This album highlights a problem with this list. Albums are often added too hastily and it seems to take an act of God to get them removed. The stated goal is cultural relevance but, so often, albums are added to the list when their relevance hasn't yet been shown. On the flip side, albums that maybe seemed like they were going to be relevant and spawn a whole family of related artists are left on the list long after their family tree has withered and died. "Shalimar" is one such album. This whole musical idea proved to be untenable and, subsequently, disappeared from the cultural zeitgeist. Let it die and get it off the list.

This was not bad, but definitely a little weird at some points. To be honest, I had no issue listening to it. The album cover definitely adds to the album.

Shalimar misses a lot, this is a soundtrack to something to watch, not to be listened to in isolation. It just doesn't resonate. 2.

This was not great, and I don't get why it's on this list? If you're going to include Indian music (and you probably should given the population makes up 20% ish of the world) then include something made for the purpose of being listened to, rather than something that is setting the scene for something more visual and vocal! We've had a couple of movie soundtracks (and at least this one is for a film that actually exists), but this one doesn't seem to have anything that makes it special. 2/5.

Who would have thought that I would be listening to a Bollywood movie soundtrack? Very cool to be able to experience that. The music itself was interesting. I wouldn’t listen to it regularly, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The soundtrack to the most expensive Bollywood film ever (relative to when it was released)? Well, OK. I really liked the 70s-funk laden sounds of the intro track. I desperately wished that continued throughout the album but it didn’t. Winds up being kitschy fun for me, but not much else.

I like this album, it's a fun film soundtrack. Not sure how often I'll come back to it as a whole but maybe would favorite a couple of tracks. The title music intro track is real cool and trippy, then 'Aaina Wohi Rehta Hai' is a highlight in my opinion. This one is right between a 3 and 4, I'd give it a 3.5 if I could. I ended up being pleasantly surprised with this. I wasn’t enjoying the first three songs but then “Countess’ Caper” and “Naag Devta” turns up to the party. I might actually go watch to movie after listening to this.

I was excited to see something like this pop up. I was hoping for some tabla and hearty eastern rhythms. This did not eventuate. Poorly recorded and a bit grating.

This was fun, like finding the soundtrack for a lost Tarantino Bollywood film.

I tried to keep an open minded given it is a musical culture completely foreign to me and could not relate to, but listening to this was absolutely dreadful.

Yeah, I really didn't enjoy this. Not just because of the style but also just for the fact of this being a movie soundtrack. Why would I want to listen to music that was made to accompany a very specific context without that context? This list waaayyy too infrequently ventures outside of US and UK and even more infrequently outside of North America / Europe. So at least it was something different. But I'm sure you could've found something better to represent this style of music.

I don’t know how to rate this in all honesty, I think it was creative and interesting but just something I wouldn’t really listen to again. It was different for sure and I see why it is important.

Is this Edwin Diaz' bullpen entrance music?? Well this one is a curveball. As much as I expected to not care about it... it kinda drew me in right away - song 1. Just ... kinda fun. Also it sounds much older than 1978 and I think that's part of the attraction as well. Totally personal issue here but I *vastly* prefer the instrumentals than any with vocals...although I think the non-English actually improves it for me; keeps the vocals as more of an instrument which I prefer rather than taking too much precedence (e.g. I enjoy track 2 "One Two Cha Cha Cha" as opposed to the 3rd track which is more mellow and vocally distracting - not my vibe) "Countess' Caper" sounds like it would fit right in to a Pink Panther cartoon - this is highest of praise. But track 6 is really tough to get through (see also: track 3). Even so, overall I (MOSTLY) liked this way more than I thought I would. So far outside any of my standard or usual listening patterns and I don't know if I'd seek it out again but maybe that's exactly why I enjoyed it. Weird/different/fun. 7/10 3 stars.

Only half of this is actually available on Stupify, and I couldn't very easily find an alternative source for the full release, but based on what I heard I can comfortably give this a 4/5 I very very much enjoyed it. I really need to dig into more Bollywood stuff, as I absolutely love a lot of what I've heard but I also really don't know shit!

The cha cha song is such a bop, but the rest of the album doesn't quite live up to that.

I am glad I took the time to read about the movie before listening. This album sounds like a soundtrack, obviously based heavily in Indian Culture. It is good for what it is, though I do not understand what qualified it for this list.

For a Bollywood movie soundtrack I actually expected worse. This was okay as it was jazzy and had solid instrumentals. Overall though I don’t see any reason why I would revisit it when there are far more exceptional jazz albums out there. 3.6/10

Feeling very open to world music, I was optimistic coming into this. I ended up giving up half way through my second listen. The music was horribly repetitive and the vocals were more annoying than anything else. Though some songs were catchy and had addictive melodies, they were catchy in a negative way. Won't listen to it again, but I acknowledge its appeal. 1.5/5

I did not enjoy listening to it piecemeal, but that is not the album's fault, I suppose. Otherwise it was okay, though nothing stood out to me.

Tellement de variétés de sons c'est swag

OK, I'll admit - I was ready to disregard this album just on the fact that it is a Bollywood movie soundtrack. I don't like those movies, and I don't like (in general) music from India, so I guess a simple calculation, right? And even though its not perfect or a great album, it's surprisingly good! As a European, to get music from different culture, I have to experience it in doses. And this soundtrack is perfect for that. Music from classic 70s/80s style action movies, but withca twist of Indian vocalists or their specific instrumentation, making this a very unique experience. I honestly believe that this record made me more open to music from India than anything I've heard before. Dirty Harry from Bombai? I think next step is to actually watch the movie :) Why not!

i never would have even conceived that this was an album if not for this site which i think is really cool. it’s definitely not something i would listen to and i’m not even sure what it was. was it just a normal album or was it like a bollywood movie score? i wouldn’t be surprised if it was either.

A delight with a mix of styles and lots of pleasing melodies and hooks and riffs, though, even as an Indophile, one's not totally clear as to just what to make of it. One's glad to have heard. Definitely worthy.

Loved loved loved the opening three tracks. So good - Indisco. It gets a bit more rote after that but is still a solid Bollywood soundtrack.

Fun and interesting and still a pretty chilled thing to have on in the background. I can't say it was particularly my thing but there were a couple of songs I did quite like. Not sure if I'll come back to it any time soon but I'm certainly intrigued about the movie. Favourite: One Two Cha Cha Cha

A breath of fresh air from all the American and British artists that have been crowding the list so far. Like a lot of Bollywood soundtracks of this era, this album has a fun feeling to it that I enjoyed even if the album didn't do anything too technically incredible. You'd never consider this album to be awe inspiring by any stretch of the imagination, but I liked it and it was fun to listen to. 3/5

Not sure why this Bollywood album was picked. Is it the greatest? I'm not an expert. Interesting but i would never play it again. Way too diverse. And a bit cheesy at times.

Out of this world etno kitsch, Bollywood folklore,…and Jazz. Rhythm is the nicer the less Western influences dictate the structure. Future Pilot must‘ve known what potential there was blending the best of both worlds. Really nice experience 3.3

Soundtracks are tough. There is, of course, the question of whether they can hold up without seeing the movie. This falls in the middle for me. At times it is too obviously a soundtrack and without seeing the movie I felt lost. Other passages are wonderful and evocative of Ennio Morricone. The best portions are interesting enough to make me want to seek out other works by this very prolific composer.

Excellent! Never heard it before and now in the heavy rotation list!

Oh my. Again, not sure WHY such a poorly recorded collection of songs from a 1978 Bollywood OST must be heard before someone dies. Not that the composition or effort in writing each song is bad, but good lord, the worst of my CDs I would get from a 1994 Columbia House or BMG subscription seem to best this. This seems like a box-check on a diversity and inclusion requirement.

I’m glad this album was included but it really draws attention to the fact that Indian music is not well represented on this list. The album itself clearly has taken its direction from western music and has a bit of a classic 60s movie soundtrack sound with some really lovely Bollywood and Indian Classical motifs front and center. I wish I knew enough to really be able to understand this better.

When this record came up, I prejudged it as another Ravi Shankar-esque album before even hearing the first note... and then I forgot about it. Going back to see the albums I missed I put this one and whoa... it's wonderfully eclectic and awesome. It's a mix of Morricone-esque numbers, with Indian instruments, quite a lot of good tongue in cheek, some bossa nova - it's a delight from start to finish. Looking back I feel like an ass for missing out on this.

I don’t know about this one. It’s cool to hear music from around the world, as this is, but I don’t really grasp why this particular soundtrack was selected to the list. It was fine, with some enjoyable tracks, but if it’s more than that I can’t tell. Naag Devta stands out as a pretty righteous sounding tune with compelling harmonies.

Not my bag. I'm not wild about the vocalizations in eastern music. I recognize, however, the talent to do it, I just don't enjoy listening to it.

The album is entirely forgettable. It is music from a Bollywood movie. It is not sitar heavy but it isn't great. It is relatively short. I will round up.

Interesting listen - but never again.

Title Music opens with a stuttering rhythm, one of the more unusual Indian musical ideas I've heard. The rest of the score is fun; It seems to be a wide survey, integrating jazz interestingly and featuring a variety of vocalists and moods.

Less high energy than I expected, but a pleasant background listen. 3.5

Bollywood rocks. It is Bollywood right? Very sprightly. A nice change from The Smiths albums that have been popping up on an all too regular basis. .2% of the best 1000 albums ever recorded were by The Smiths. Unto me render a break.

j'adore, très riche musicalement

The title track, 'Title Music (Shalimar)', is great! When I heard that I was stoked for the album to come. From there, it was a pretty even split though. Tracks like 'Countess' Caper', 'Naag Devta', and 'Baby Let's Dance Together' kept the same vibe going, while the rest either made me want to rip my headphones off or just kind of bored me. Perhaps if most of the tracks didn't sound like a one-track dub off of an old television speaker, there would've been more to enjoy. In any case, I'm really happy to see more international representation on the list and I'll definitely be adding 'Title Music' to my playlist.

¡Saquen el curry! Me pasa con estos discos que es muy difícil saber qué tanto valen la pena. No sé nada de esa música entonces tengo pocos parámetros: si solo pienso en mi gusto personal, podría salir muy bajo, pero tampoco creo que valga ponerle 5 estrellas porque es el disco más relevante en su nicho musical específico. Tomando eso en cuenta, creo que este disco no es desagradable, al contrario, es un fondo musical muy chido, aunque no sé en qué momento podría escucharlo de nuevo. Así que en balance, le alcanza para 3 estrellas.

I actually enjoy Bollywood music and I was excited to hear this because... well, if I'm supposed to hear it before I die it must be good, right? But I was disappointed. The score was good, but it was to a drag to get through the rest of the album.

This album is so important that no one cares uploading it properly. Seriously, there's a few nice moments, like the main title, but it felt more like fragments of songs glued together than a full album.

Had high hopes for this and it did not live up to being on this list although I certainly don’t have any context from the movie

Definitely interesting.

I really had low expectations going into this album, but a couple of songs in, I was already hooked. The instrumentals are just out of this world and very unique, which I suppose makes sense since this was a movie. Wish I could have understood what was being sung, but it was entertaining even though I couldn't.

Best Indian James Bond soundtrack I've ever listened to most of

It’s a fine soundtrack obviously some uhhh Indian type stuff but I’m not into the bolly

R. D. Burman is a behemoth of a workhorse within the Bollywood industry. Between his start in 1966 to his final film in 1987 (a mere 7 years before his death), Burman would have release 331 film scores. Shalimar is just one piece of his long legacy. Almost coming full circle, the characteristics of South Asian music that influenced psychedelic music are now giving a psychedelic edge to this soundtrack. Shalimar was apparently slated for crossover appeal to America, allowing Bollywood to break out and garner worldwide success. Too bad it was anything but. Given the 70's track record of soundtracks tinged with psychedelia (see: Shaft in 1971, Superfly in 1972), it makes sense for this soundtrack to follow relatively close behind. As far as soundtracks go, this one is fine. I don't know much about Bollywood nor do I find it particularly captivating, so the appeal of this soundtrack is sadly limiting.

Not that keen. I don't know if it'd help to have seen the film... I think soundtracks are probably best when they remind you invoke emotions in you combined with the memory of watching the film.

For not being in English I thought this was pretty good

I've already said my piece about how soundtracks shouldn't be on this list. But, I still really enjoyed this music. It was a mix of cultures, styles, genres, and even eras that somehow worked together. I almost want to see the movie now.

Wasn’t sure when I first seen this album, but was enjoyable and glad Iv listened to it, probably deserves to be on the list.

I haven't seen this movie, but this sound track paints a picture of both the content and the time frame it comes from. Not my kinda music, but good listen anyway.

Ik had goede hoop op echte Bollywood muzak en werd zowaar op mijn wenken bediend, maar toch trad er wat verval in jammer genoeg.

Dit begon nog wel geinig, met lekker 70's style filmmuziek. Maar al snel nam de bombast en overdaad het over en was ik er klaar mee.

Het is weer eens iets anders. Voor de zaterdagochtend best pittig.

Shit like this on the list is both refreshing and infuriating. Refreshing because it is good, fun, interesting, and also not something I would regularly be exposed to! It's why I started this project and keeps me coming back. It's infuriating because the fact that it is included here means that Robert Dimery, the original author of the 1001 albums list is aware that music like this exists. He's clearly aware that there is an entire world of music out there. SO WHY HAVE I LISTENED TO 200 80s BRITISH NEW WAVE ALBUMS AND 200 SCOTTISH ROCK ALBUMS FROM THE 90S??!!?

Absolute joy. How does it rate in the grand scheme of things? No idea. But loved it!

I don't really understand the significance of this inclusion but it was a fun listen. The movie plot sounds interesting as well. Fave: One Two Cha Cha Cha

It's not entirely fair to judge a soundtrack without knowledge of the film and its context, but I doubt any film could give much order to the smattering of tracks here. Jabs at American big band, Spanish classical, and others are mixed in with a constant undercurrent of Bollywood that just feels a little half-baked as a whole.

First Bollywood soundtrack I have listened to all the way through. Really enjoyed it, found the wee references to "western" music sprinkled throughout very interesting. Hard to pick a favourite track, other than to mention that "one two cha cha cha" is probably the most immediate

I'll take a lot more where that came from. What a bright spot! It seems to have an optimism that might have been more common a decade earlier, combined with that wonderful Indian sound that brings me right back to Jaipur.

I can go for this. He's like the Mancini of Bollywood. I genuinely enjoy these types of 60s and 70s soundtracks. Super entertaining. Love the blending of so many genres.

First of all almost impossible to find and when it is found who knows what versin they are rating as a most listen album. Is there any other soundtrack albums on the list? I hope its not the only one. I have no idea why this is on the list of Must Hear albums. I don't hate the music though. 2 stars.

Shalimar was new music for me and I've never heard of Rahul Dev Burman. "One Two Cha Cha" was my least favorite track. Perhaps there was one other track that I was ready to have it finish sooner. I liked listening to something new and from a different culture. At this moment I'm not feeling like I should go check out the movie any time soon, but that could change.

2/5 not my cup of tea

I was a bit worried when I heard the opening bars using a time signature that made zero sense to my ears, that I was in for a long 40mins. But this turned into a pretty fun mixture of of East meets West and absolutely everything in between. No chance I’ll come back and listen again though.

This is super interesting - there's multiple genres in these tunes. I actually enjoyed listening to this while I worked.

i watched many a bollywood movie in my youth, but not this one! so i went into this with high hopes, bias, and more bollywood knowledge than most people have. this album has a pure seventies bollywood vibe! i have fallen in love with the romantic theme, but the other instrumentals are just as good. this album really jumps around in genres, and it can get corny at times with the sampling of english songs, but that's what adds to this soundtrack's charm. a fun, joyous listen. it doesn't have to be taken seriously.

A best friend (to protect her identity, we will omit her name) has been sending me Bollywood tracks for probably a decade and a half at this point, so I have developed a very subjective, certain taste and idea in my mind for what I consider "good Bollywood music". I am sad to say that this really wasn't it. However, considering this album is from the 1970s, it was fun to hear some influences from the height of funk and disco era on here. Lots of Spanish influence, too! Ultimately, this just wasn't for me.

A pleasant surprise, not what I expected based on the album cover. It's a lot less Bollywood-sounding than it looks. The title music sounds like something from a 70s Hollywood thriller and other instrumentals have shades of Morricone western soundtracks. The film sounds pretty good as well.

If you're wondering where the '90s exotica thing borrowed heavily from, then this is your album.

First time of listening, a bit like Fusion food this. good in parts, can't see why this is in the list really. Highlight for me was "One Two Cha Cha" but a bit disappointing really.

4.1 + Colorful and varied. There's a quirky dance number with lots of instrumental layers ("One Two Cha Cha Cha"), a pretty love ballad ("Hum Bewafa Hargiz Na Thay") and some lush, cinematic instrumentals that tie in different musical influences (e.g. flamenco, Indian folk, big band jazz, funk...).

While I still appreciate getting albums like this, this is the first one I didn't enjoy very much. The last few songs were pretty good but the rest were more annoying than anything.

This album was one of the more unique ones on this list and overall I enjoyed it. It is hard to properly rate when this is such an unfamiliar type of music to me. No recognized songs

I did like this album, but I wonder how familiar the author of 1001 albums is with Indian music and whether they would have selected this movie soundtrack if they had the same breadth of familiarity that they obviously have with american & english music.

This is awesome! You never know what you're going to get listening to the soundtrack for a film you've never seen. It's a widely diverse soundtrack. Lots of swelling instrumentation. A surprisingly fun listen!

I thought I wasn't going to like this, but the energy sold me. I couldn't get over how vibrant and melodic this was, even if the vocals were sometimes "not my style".

that was actually surprisingly impressive I’m not a big fan of indian music (or bollywood movies) but this actually had some really nice production overall I can overlook the parts of the album I found annoying for the quality of the overall music - 8/10

It's a shame this is so difficult to track down in its entirety. The few songs I picked were interesting, almost James Bond-movie instrumentation. I think it suffers a bit from being a soundtrack album, especially if you don't speak Hindi, as you know it's telling a story, you just don't know what it is.

This was a funky listen! Also, indicative of how much of an afterthought world music is to this list. The original entry was "Shalimar/College Girl" because the list author had a bootleg album that threw two unrelated soundtracks together! 😆 "College Girl" is also worth checking out. The track "College Girl 'I Love You'" lifts a chunk of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" which is fun, and "Everybody Dance With Me" uses the riff from Iron Butterfly's "In A Gadda Da Vita"... Fave track (on Shalimar) - "Countess Caper (Music)" - loved that Bollywood spaghetti western vibe! The opening track "Title Music" was also very atmospheric...
