Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Enjoyable album from the start until the end, solid and interesting tracks overall.

It's like Bond-esque funk, met a spaghetti western in India and decided to stay.

This seemed like kind of a goof mostly, it didn’t really scan for me as something to sit down and just listen to as an album. I did kind of want to join in a big crazy costume dance number.

I don’t know about this one. It’s cool to hear music from around the world, as this is, but I don’t really grasp why this particular soundtrack was selected to the list. It was fine, with some enjoyable tracks, but if it’s more than that I can’t tell. Naag Devta stands out as a pretty righteous sounding tune with compelling harmonies.

Not my bag. I'm not wild about the vocalizations in eastern music. I recognize, however, the talent to do it, I just don't enjoy listening to it.

Interesting listen - but never again.

Title Music opens with a stuttering rhythm, one of the more unusual Indian musical ideas I've heard. The rest of the score is fun; It seems to be a wide survey, integrating jazz interestingly and featuring a variety of vocalists and moods.

Less high energy than I expected, but a pleasant background listen. 3.5

Bollywood rocks. It is Bollywood right? Very sprightly. A nice change from The Smiths albums that have been popping up on an all too regular basis. .2% of the best 1000 albums ever recorded were by The Smiths. Unto me render a break.

Sounds like the soundtrack to a cheesy Bollywood movie. Oh wait, it is a soundtrack to a cheesy Bollywood movie. It's okay, but not quite sure why it's on this list. 3 stars.

Reminds me why I'll always melt for belly dancers.

I refuse to review this album because it is a fucking travesty that the 1,001 albums generator has continued during such a tragic week. RIP week 7 of the 2022-2023 Premier League season. Long live week 8 of the 2022-2023 Premier League season (and Godspeed to those rearranging week 7).

The title track, 'Title Music (Shalimar)', is great! When I heard that I was stoked for the album to come. From there, it was a pretty even split though. Tracks like 'Countess' Caper', 'Naag Devta', and 'Baby Let's Dance Together' kept the same vibe going, while the rest either made me want to rip my headphones off or just kind of bored me. Perhaps if most of the tracks didn't sound like a one-track dub off of an old television speaker, there would've been more to enjoy. In any case, I'm really happy to see more international representation on the list and I'll definitely be adding 'Title Music' to my playlist.

Definitely interesting.

Fun, a little jazzy, a little spicy, a little trippy, frequently elegant. Makes me curious to see the film. Fave Songs: Aaina Wohi Rehta Hai, Naag Devta, Romantic Theme, Mera Pyaar Shalimar, Title Music (Shalimar)

Best Indian James Bond soundtrack I've ever listened to most of

couldn’t really understand it, but it didn’t sound bad!! :))

I've already said my piece about how soundtracks shouldn't be on this list. But, I still really enjoyed this music. It was a mix of cultures, styles, genres, and even eras that somehow worked together. I almost want to see the movie now.

Curiosa descoberta. Banda sonora de Bollywood plena d'influències de tot tipus, incloent occidentals. Música diferent a la qual estem acostumats a Europa, i molt consistent

Wasn’t sure when I first seen this album, but was enjoyable and glad Iv listened to it, probably deserves to be on the list.

I haven't seen this movie, but this sound track paints a picture of both the content and the time frame it comes from. Not my kinda music, but good listen anyway.

As far as soundtracks to movies I've never seen go, this isn't too bad.

India. Bollywood

Strange one

05/19/2022 Actually pretty killer. Lots of it sounds like a 70's action soundtrack.

I don't really understand the significance of this inclusion but it was a fun listen. The movie plot sounds interesting as well. Fave: One Two Cha Cha Cha

“I don’t quite know how I feel” - Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

First Bollywood soundtrack I have listened to all the way through. Really enjoyed it, found the wee references to "western" music sprinkled throughout very interesting. Hard to pick a favourite track, other than to mention that "one two cha cha cha" is probably the most immediate

I'm assuming this is iconic due to reasons I am not familiar with. It's... ok?

Was pleasantly surprised. It was a very solid listen, with some decent production.

This clearly ain’t my usual bag, but this ain’t all that bad… defo listenable!

What a completely seemingly random assortment of musical styles. No idea what this film could be about. An interesting listen but I'll probably never listen again.

Shalimar was new music for me and I've never heard of Rahul Dev Burman. "One Two Cha Cha" was my least favorite track. Perhaps there was one other track that I was ready to have it finish sooner. I liked listening to something new and from a different culture. At this moment I'm not feeling like I should go check out the movie any time soon, but that could change.

I was a bit worried when I heard the opening bars using a time signature that made zero sense to my ears, that I was in for a long 40mins. But this turned into a pretty fun mixture of of East meets West and absolutely everything in between. No chance I’ll come back and listen again though.

This is super interesting - there's multiple genres in these tunes. I actually enjoyed listening to this while I worked.

A pleasant surprise, not what I expected based on the album cover. It's a lot less Bollywood-sounding than it looks. The title music sounds like something from a 70s Hollywood thriller and other instrumentals have shades of Morricone western soundtracks. The film sounds pretty good as well.

If you're wondering where the '90s exotica thing borrowed heavily from, then this is your album.

Odd, but not bad

intresting. worth a re listen

This album was one of the more unique ones on this list and overall I enjoyed it. It is hard to properly rate when this is such an unfamiliar type of music to me. No recognized songs

Cracking mix of modern and classical tracks.

This is awesome! You never know what you're going to get listening to the soundtrack for a film you've never seen. It's a widely diverse soundtrack. Lots of swelling instrumentation. A surprisingly fun listen!

Almost 4

A little strange, but made me smile

Hurrrr

Grappig , beetje 70 s rock met dan wat Indische elementen

No se puede escuchar en Spotify

Is that Mark Ruffalo on the cover?

A nutty flavour with hints of Cole Porter and Tamla Motown with the obvious Eastern spices but I didn't like it.

Eh, interesting enough but I hope this isn't the only entry from the country of India on this list. Western music is not what it is today without Indian classical music and it would be a bit of a shame if the only Indian album on this list is a movie soundtrack. Still, with how impactful Bollywood has been from both a cultural and financial standpoint, it's easy to see why at least one of these soundtracks make the list.

An okay album, no stand out songs.

Slightly confused by this choice

So a soundtrack huh? Not my thing at all.

As someone else said - having a soundtrack as the only representation of Indian music, is like having the Forrest Gump soundtrack as the sole representation of American music. Still, I enjoyed it more than I'd thought. Interesting music, even though I will never revisit it again. One star less for the silliness of its inclusion

Was just okay, some good singing, and some annoying singing.

I like representation of Bollywood but this one didnt do much for me 2/5

cheerful, but not my style

I mean it was ok , definitely not for me but it was fine

I’m sure it was groundbreaking in its day but to these ears it’s a pastiche that ends up sounding like everything and nothing at all

Naja, Bollywood. Verstehe nicht ganz warum das in die Sammlung rutschte.

Some equally very cool and very annoying stuff. 2.5/5

Day 280

There’s a very good case for Bollywood soundtracks (or any Indian music, really!) to have several entries on this list. Some of them are surely essential and would introduce me to pop cultural artifacts I would’ve otherwise ignored. But from my quick research, Shalimar was a critical and commercial flop. So why is it here? The answer is that it’s a kind of fusion album, I guess. Mixed in with the more usual Bollywood soundtrack stylings are a bunch of scattershot Hollywood soundtrack styles. It mostly feels random rather than coherent. Bollywood is admittedly a blind spot for me, but this didn’t do a lot for me. Just an odd selection, more of an interesting curio than a must-hear.

Sounds like a 70s movie soundtrack. Not much else to note.

no me gusto

Not being a fan of the genre, this had a few spots I liked, but was overall not appealing to me. Some jazzy numbers, but overall, not for me.

Maybe if you have nothing else to do.

This is a blend of big-band jazz and pop written and performed for a movie soundtrack. That's all fine, but I might as well break out some Henry Mancini. No reason to listen to this before dying.

ID Buddy?

1.8 Would be happy if I never heard Bollywood music for the rest of my life, that's about it really.

not for me

At least it's not some random British uninspiring noise band.

It is not consistent in the way a great studio album by a band is consistent. Some pieces matter more as mood, scene-setting, or sonic spectacle than as stand-alone songs. There are moments where the record feels more like a box of brilliant materials than a single fully locked statement. That is the cost of the format.

# Album Name: Shalimar # Artist: Rahul Dev Burman # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Quite funky in parts for sure. But couldnt listen to the whole thing. surely there is better indian music than a bollywood soundtrack # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No

Umm.... No idea if this is good or not as I have no frame of reference for Indian music (Bollywood). Doesn't do anything for me. Interesting rhythms 'tho.

don't get this ...today is 1st of April not yesterday

Well, at least it wasn’t Elvis fucking Costello again

Doesn't deserve one star, but it's really not for me.

Has a dated feel even for its time, or at least not really at the top of its contemporary game. I don't really know how it compares in Bollywood, I can only compare it to music that I'm familiar with and it doesn't manage very well The songs are okay, just not particularly exciting to hear, overall left feeling a bit of dullness

I'm curious why this guy thought I needed to hear this Esquivel! meets Bollywood mashup. I made it through 5 songs, got busy at work and didn't listen to the rest.

2/5 - I'm just not into soundtracks where I feel like I'm missing the action of the film. This seems like an odd choice overall, and I couldn't get through it.

Nice change of pace, but personally I won't be back for this anytime soon

Some of the other reviews, man. Yall sound like clowns. Anyone who could enjoy the Cha Cha Cha song is just an idiot entertained by novelty. You would clap your hands and gape in wide-mouthed astonishment if I jingled some keys in your face, provided I told you the keys were all made by rural Estonians.

A fun listen, but I think I would've appreciated it more if I watched the film this is from. Like many others have said, I wish there was more diversity in this godforsaken list, because this certainly isn't the end all be all of Indian music and I'd love to experience a fuller breadth of a culture's offerings. Dimery, it's on sight.

Certainly a change of pace, and some nice musical motifs, but I couldn't see myself getting into it as a genre.

Knew this would be a strange one, and it did turn out that way. I have a lot of issues with listening to a soundtrack for something I haven't experienced. There are a select few soundtracks (and within those only a few songs) that can truly stand on their own. In this case, however, I end up feeling completely separated from any emotional context for the music both through the language barrier and never having seen the movie itself. While there were a few interesting moments and vague emotions that rose through the music, the most I could give at the end was a disinterested shrug. Favorite Songs: "Title Music (Shalimar)", "Romantic Theme (Shalimar)", "Mera Pyar Shalimar) Least Favorite Song: the rest i guess... Mid 2.

not terrible

Not sure I liked it much as an album but I do wanna watch this film now

Started out good, but turned annoying

Classical Bollywood is not my thing. 2/5

Did not like.

It's 60s-flavored Bollywood movie music. It's OK, but I'm not going to be seeking out any more like this. 2.5

Weird to highlight an album that is so entrenched in controversy (stolen vibes/types of music?)

What a strange album 2/5

Gear: Penon FAN 3s Artwork: 🔫👯💎 Production: 🕰️📏😐 Music: 🍸🤵🏽🇮🇳 Rating: 🎬🎬(🎬)/5

So this is a movie soundtrack, and I felt like I could tell when the struggle happens in the middle. Or I'm assuming so. That was kinda cool. I enjoyed the beginning. This music isn't for me but I'll respect it

this was cute but i feel like i'm in a particularly rough patch with our album pulls and it's affecting my mental, so sorry to this man

Nisam sigurna koji je ovo k, niti šta da mislim o tome. 2/5, 3/10

I was under the impression that soundtracks weren't a part of this list, so seeing this surprised me. I'm only 28 albums into this challenge, but this will be my second album from outside the Anglosphere, so I'm looking forward to having a bit of variety. Unfortunately, this album didn't have much to offer for me. I enjoyed having a chance to listen to something different, but a lot of the songs blended together. I think the album suffered from being a soundtrack, and it reflects poorly on the list makers that this is the only album of this style of music out of the whole 1089, as opposed to a standalone album. Favourite song: One Two Cha Cha Cha?

I was expecting it to be shite but some of the tunes were a bop, mostly painful though

Could not find the record. Listening to the radio compilation. One either likes Indian music or not.

Escolha estranha pra lista.

It's probably more interesting in context of the movie.

Glad to hear something different, even if I didn’t enjoy it too much. I liked the instrumentation at times and Aaina Wohi Rehta Hai stood out to me in particular. I didn’t really like the vocals too much, and most of the songs didn’t intrigue me.

I never thought I would listen to this - nevermind kinda like it but I will never listen to it again so it’s hard to go past a 2 for me

Never listened. Expectations: None - Verdict: Alright - This is something I would never have come across myself. I really like some of the tracks. There is definitely a psychedelic feel which I will always be a sucker for.

Very strange album. It's clearly a soundtrack for a Bollywood movie, but the track list is quite diverse with influences from funk and latin music among others. The sound quality was quite poor though, with vocals and instruments getting really distorted in the intense moments. It was a bit of silly campy fun but I'm not sure I needed to listen to this.

Sorry, rasist

Not really my thing

Without the Hindi vocals, it's just your basic orchestral elevator music, well-suited for B-Movie soundtracks and airport lounges. There are a few songs, like "Naag Devta," that approach more traditional Indian styles. Those moments are brief and not enough to hold my interest.

Kind of crazy how music rights are going to prevent you from listening to a 47 year old motion picture soundtrack, but here we are. Cha Cha Cha was kind of lame, but the rest of the album was definitely a fun look into Bollywood.

Kinda weird to have a movie soundtrack on this list. I’m surprised it qualifies as an “album”. Regardless of that, it’s not a good album. There’s just better music out there.

At least it’s not more Bowie. Fun for a little something different, but something you HAVE to listen to before you die? Nah. 10 Ragas to a Disco Beat is way more interesting. Weird choice to put a movie soundtrack on here, anyway.

This one had me conflicted. It’s a composed soundtrack so of course you can’t listen to it like you would a regular album. It definitely sounded like a soundtrack but from various genres - obviously Bollywood, but also some western and James Bond sounding tracks, along with a little jazzy sound sometimes. I actually got into some of it but other songs with the terrible screeching high pitched voice were pretty bad. It was unique, but definitely not a good representative of Bollywood music overall. I’ll never listen to it again, but I’m not mad I listened to it for this.

This music is CLEARLY from the 70’s and was made to be a movie sound track. It’s background music all day long and should not be a focal point. Another dud on the lists of 1001.

It's different but not for me.

Parts kitschy 70s nonsense, part interesting to listen to. Can't honestly say I enjoyed it.

It was alright, I won’t be rushing back

Best Track - "Title Music"

Feels like the guy who made this list figured he needed more "global" music to round out the endless 80s British synth pop and just threw on a Bollywood soundtrack.

Some catchy songs, but for the most part.... wat?

I'm sure there are tons of classics here, like Aaina Wohi Rehta Hai. Should I watch the movie?????

Saved by some songs having a jazz / big band flare

Wasn't into it! SAD!

Yeah, not a fan but I appreciate that something entirely different was recommended to me

Fuck my life, fuck my life, fuck my life up, yeah Fuck my life, fuck my life, fuck my life up

This was fine- it's nice to have some variety though it's not really to my taste.

Oh it’s all the names from Brimful of Asha! It is different to a lot of the stuff on here, and an English / Hindi film soundtrack. I didn’t mind it.

HOW THE SHIT DOES THIS GUY HAVE 13 MILLION MONTHLY LISTENERS

Not my bag.

Never heard an album like this before. Lots of energy. Maybe too much.

intro to the first song was interesting, but from there on in it just sounded like a soundtrack to an bollywood film. not my cuppa

Very strange that we got a Bollywood movie soundtrack and not the Weezer Blue Album. Had some cool stuff in it but I think I would have been ok without listening to this.

A soundtrack to a famous Bollywood movie! Cool. Something different for once. I don't think I'll ever listen to it again, and it wasn't for me. But it was cool.

Not really what I was expecting. It's nothing if not eclectic - it skips from funky proto hip-hop drum breaks, to jazz, to 70s sax sleaze, to cheesy 60s bubblegum pop - and that's just the opening couple of tracks. Countess Caper starts out as a simple Count Basie groove and somehow morphs into an accordian-led polka, a brassy 70s cop movie theme, and then spaghetti western mariachi music before a big orchestral climax. Bonkers stuff. I can't say any of it really "landed" with me but it was one hell of a ride. If you are that way inclined, I'm sure this must be a treasure trove of beats, grooves and general weirdness waiting to be sampled (if it hasn't been already). I feel like this is an album everyone should hear before they die, for some perverse reason.

Ummm. Okay. 2

I tried playing a game of “Guess the Plot” from this soundtrack, but I think I left just as clueless leaving the album as I did coming into it. My guess is “cop movie”, because of the gun on the cover. I am not nearly as cultured in Bollywood enough to tell if this film is like a classic or something. I do like that this book gave me something different than Latin or African for the world genre. But, this was not for me. It kind of got a little grating as it went on, probably due to the sound quality. I don’t know about anyone else, but some parts just sounded a little loud. Like to the point where the stereo would start giving feedback. I did this on Spotify, so it wasn’t a second-hand recording. Also, I don’t really care for the weird mix between 70’s pop and traditional Indian music. It got kind of cheesy in an annoying way. It doesn’t help that some of the songs drag a bit. I really hope there’s more samples of Indian music on here. I know Bollywood can produce some bangers. I just don’t think I found them here. Favorite track: One Two Cha Cha Cha Other hits: Title Music, Baby Let’s Dance Together, Romantic Theme

Shalimar Shakti de ... 🤠 🤔

I'm sure it's a decent example of the genre, it's just totally not my bag baby

Good soundtrack! Almost makes me want to watch the movie. Liked the instrumentals a good amount. At times the vocals are a bit annoying.

well I gave it a go, was not too bad. Unlikely to try it again though.

Bollywood-Pop. Dafür noch gut hörbar. Aber einmal hören reicht mir dann auch. 2/5

Bollywood is a genre I’ve really not explored in the past. I won’t do much exploration past this. I found this to be very cringy.

Sorry, a movie soundtrack? We are allowed movie soundtracks?!?! Can I have pirates of the caribbean?

Makes me want to belly dance

Not sure why this is on the list honestly. There's nothing like old Indian/Hindu music with vocals that peg the input channels and distort due to excessive clipping.

Um começo interessante, mas um disco fraco ao final da audição. A mistura de sons hindus com uma salada de ritmos não funciona.

Gotta question this one’s inclusion in the list. Pretty basic Bollywood soundtrack. Not sure what this is brining of note but nothing particularly exciting about it.

Ok, lite kul med world music för att visa att man är öppen, men nja

The Good: We get an awesome movie poster to look at… The Bad: That’s it… just look… don’t listen. The Ugly: Finding out that Shalimar is Hindi for crap music… This album actually starts off great, making me look forward to the rest… till the rest starts, and then I start looking forward to the album ending… It’s a little of this, too much of that, and not enough of everything. Shame… However, I’ve listened to it, and can now stand proud knowing that I have been baptized in the lore of Bollywood, knowing that it’s not my cup of tea… 2*

2/5 A couple winners, but the overall mix feels disjointed and doesn't quite maintain the cool James Bond sort of feel of the early tracks.

This was fine! It's a movie soundtrack and it was kinda all over the place? I don't know it just wasn't for me I think. I liked the composition of the songs and a few of them are very catchy, but otherwise it was meh.

Ugh. Part of the problem with this, I think, was that it was a film soundtrack, which is just very different than most "albums". I *think* it was "it's a soundtrack" and not "it's a Bollywood soundtrack"; I think I was more put off by the swelling instrumentals than the sound of the music itself. Whatever it was, though, it just didn't work for me.

Not my favourite Bollywood soundtrack. That would be the one Houmous & Chutney did in 1972. ‘Caffe Saffron’ as a film was a flop but the soundtrack won endless awards. 1.9 7/10 Baby Lets Dance Together

Sounds like a movie soundtrack from the 60s/70s and in fact that's exactly what it is. Probably would have helped if I'd actually seen the film, otherwise I wouldn't have thought this is just a bizarre album

Was ok.

Very, very cool music I’ve never heard before. I can’t give it a high rating as it’s just not my jam, but awesome to listen through.

Well that was cute(?)

Bollywood sound track that was just ok.

It's a fun album with some good songs, but don't know why the only Indian album I've seen on here is a movie soundtrack. Surely there are better options. 5/10

Not having the context of the movie doesn't help. The music is nice and mostly easy to listen to.

Not my thing, but not bad either.

I mean at the very least, it's interesting. But way too much fluff and nonsense that really detracts, glad I listened, will never again and no interest in seeing the film as a result of listening to this

Not exactly for me, but no knock on it. I imagine it fit well for the film, I just didn't finish it.

A bit of an odd one as a lot of it just sounded like the soundtrack to a standard 70s Hollywood film. I was expected a more distinctive (possibly stereotypically Indian) sound.

Probably not the best soundtrack for the gym

Very interesting?? Definitely not my muisc very theatrical and not exactly to my taste but it’s still a good album just not my music highlights: Chicago, casmir pulaski day

Interesting 2-3

Better than Shalamar but only just! Started quirky and interesting but I soon tired of this. Sorry to all my lovely Indian friends and colleagues who love Bollywood 😞

As a film soundtrack it’s fine, but not something I’d really choose to go and listen to itself.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of Bollywood, but I wanted to give it a listen and see if it could change my mind. The first track surprised me positively, but it was pretty downhill from there. The good track for me was "Title Music (Shalimar)", it's a pretty ambitious composition, mixing to great effect different styles, the wind and horns sections are outstanding, it's jazzy and bold, and it works so good. After the opener though, I found it to be not only very different from the first track, but to be pretty monotonous. It's a one-trick pony, and I didn't like the trick. It's just pretty mediocre all over. Admittedly, I didn't understand the lyrics, but I doubt they'd be so good they'd fix what's lacking musically. I feel like Madlib would have a field day sampling this, but for a regular listen it gave me almost nothing.

Disappointing, felt like a half-baked and subdued version of the magnificent chaos and speaker-distorting bonkers-ness that Bollywood soundtracks should be.

What is this doing here? Some kind of western influenced Bollywood thing? I didn't enjoy it. If this is tokenism, there must have been something better in THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF BOLLYWOOD than this.

Could only find the theme song

Bollywood soundtrack. good, but not what I want to listen to for 40 mins

Not sure why this was the example of Hindi music the authors felt needed to be included on the list. It's ok but it feels a bit like a parody of itself, which probably represents my own ignorance more than the quality of the art. I will say that I do have a sudden urge to whip up a batch of popcorn, grab a blanket, and nestle into the couch to watch the movie. It can't be all that bad, right? But if it is, please let it fail in a gloriously memorable mess.

This is … ok, I guess - but I have no cultural connection to it so can’t really judge if it’s good or bad. I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t interest me. Meh.

There have been some albums that have come out of India and Pakistan in this Project that I've enjoyed a surprisingly large amount. This wasn't one of them. It's - to my ears at least, and I do appreciate that I'm coming from a position of almost know understanding of the culture - a quite hackneyed sounding affair, and just generally pretty annoying.

Refreshing change from British junk, but it does feel like the so-called music critics who created this list saw this film and decided to throw this album on as a token.

Didn't like

fun for a little but gets old fast

That's not my taste in music

Not as awful as expected but close. The tracks with flute were ok.

I usually like Bollywood but this one wasn’t for me

It wasn't unlistenable. It had a few brief moments where it started to get interesting, then just went back to being very boring and monotonous.

Wilde indische 70er Filmmusik

Interesting, but not for me.

It's not my thing, but I appreciate some of the orchestral bits. There were also some nice little funky bits in there. For the most part it wasn't a bad listen, and I was happy enough with it playing in the background. I really can't get on-board with the wailing singing though. 2.5 rounded down.

This had some nice spacy moments, but at times was crowded with extra noises.

intrigued at first, it became boring after a couple of songs.

Certaines chansons assez inattendues avec un petit côté western rigolo.

Not familiar with this movie at all. Not often you see a full-on movie soundtrack on this list. This is admittedly a strange listening experience, as I'm listening to this without the context of what this movie is all about. Some tracks were interesting in a funk sort of way. Other tracks went on too long or had vocals that were sort of grating to listen to. The overall sound quality felt inconsistent too. It would be a bit strange if this was the only Indian music representative on this list, but I also wouldn't be surprised given what this list of albums has offered. In any case, I didn't come away yearning to watch this movie or anything after listening.

This was an interesting album. Started strong but I lost interested after several songs.

Meh. Not a huge fan. Overall boring soundtrack with a few brief interludes of interest. None of the songs are catchy, most suffer from repetition.

Well, not really my kind of music... Interesting listening anyway, kinda reminded me of that Benny Lava video 😅

well this was interesting, didnt expect quite an album like this but it grabbed my attention in a few parts. glad to have played it

This dude has over 300 albums. Not sure how we can be certain this is his best.

Had very low expectations. It's a pretty fun listen honestly, although not very good.

Meh Rating: 2.0

I mean, it’s a movie soundtrack and not a very good one at that.

Um, it was alright

Villiä menoa, sehän meni humpaksikin siellä! Hieman tylsää on kuunnella musikaalimaisia biisejä ilman videota, mut loppupuoli levyä oli onneksi perussoundtrackia. On varmasti mieleenpainuvat biisit leffassa, näin yksinään jäävät minusta vähän ilmaan. Melkein 3 tähtee, ei ihan.

Cha cha cha viihdyttää (kuulostaako tutulta?), mutta levykokonaisuudessa on laulelun makua (eikö tämä olluutkaan soundtrack?).

This was a different genre, which was cool.

A soundtrack to an old Bollywood movie? Interesting. The first track was really cool, after that was just okay.

No thanks, cha cha cha. Fuck that, cha cha cha.

Hard to rate this one. Wasn't really my thing and is pretty foreign to what I normally listen to. Didn't resonate with me, but seemed to be well made.

It's pretty good for what it is. But I don't find anything about it an essential listen and it really doesn't belong on this list. It is more of a nice little curiosity with some nice jazzy tunes sprinkled throughout.

Its definitely not my style, although 1-2 bangers can be found in the soundtrack

… interesting.

not for me but cool bass lines!

not my thing

yeah not for me

An interesting placement into the 70s Indian soundtrack but it was more noise than pleasure for me.

Some Indian music is nice to listen to. This was not enjoyable to me, although I did think Romantic Theme was a beautiful number.

Love the vibes of the record, really cozy

Why is this on the list? There’s probably 1001 soundtrack albums better than this.

What a weird pick. As far as I can tell this is not some iconic Bollywood film that has endured the test of time. In fact it is seen as one of Bollywoods biggest critical and commercial failures. Ya man Rahul does seem to be ‘the guy’ when it comes to Bollywood soundtracks, but it’s not even seen to be one of his best. There are three other soundtracks which he won a Bollywood ‘Oscar’ for, he just got a mere nomination for this, one of nineteen. This felt like someone panicked at the last moment and decided they needed an album from India, and this was the first one they found. Simpsons: No

agree ja copytrade 2 star

1001 Albums You Probably Actually Don't Need To Listen To But Should Because a Brit Was Involved. I don't get it man. I feel like so many of these choices are completely arbitrary. The music is totally fine, but totally unnecessary. Maybe the movie recontextualizes things? I don't hear it. Glad it at least wasn't made in the UK.

Good, but only a few of the songs

actually pretty cool. i feel like there's a lot of sampling potential here

I mean, not the worst thing ever I guess, but like...I don't want to listen to it again is all.

Not for me, and that's okay. I wouldn't listen to this again.

It's rough having so many songs self-sabotage by including bad vocals that could've easily been omitted Naag Devta has a group of backing vocalists that seriously damage the song whenever they butt into the (otherwise fairly good) instrumental. Track 3, which starts with a brief dialogue, diverges into a thin, weirdly percussive soundscape with brief interjections of human elephant noises. Fortunately, the lead vocal is good enough that it's still a decent track, but those noises should be removed – particularly as the production isn't doing them any favours. The lead vocal in Aaina Wohi Rehta Hai starts well in the low register, but as the singer goes into her upper range, it immediately becomes clear that the production doesn't do her voice justice. It sounds like one of those operatic tracks from a 1940s Disney film, with equally blurry high-pitched yowling to match. I would've happily taken this song without the lead vocal, because it actually sounds good after I tune out that singing. Now for the highlights. One Two Cha Cha Cha is, as the name suggests, a catchy tune with a Latin-style hook. It's fun, and a definite highlight. Mera Pyar Shalimar is the lead female vocalist's best performance in the soundtrack, vastly outshining Aaina Wohi Rehta Hai from side 1 (though it could still use some improvements on mixing and getting rid of those vinyl aberrations). Hum Bewafa Hargiz Na Thay is a solid closing track with a simple, driving percussion-string backing, and Cash-esque vocals. All in all, though, this sounds far too musically conservative to belong on a list of the 1001 most crucial, groundbreaking listens in the world of music. Perhaps if it had come out twenty or thirty years earlier, my opinion would be different. 2/5 Key tracks: One Two Cha Cha Cha, Hum Bewafa Hargiz Na Thay

Men gärna mer "världsmusik".

Bollywood film music. Not for me

Maybe a fun soundtrack but in terms of an album not my jam.

Märkligt album. Fast 1,5 miljard indier kan väl inte ha fel.

It’s not my kind of thing. A bit obvious and a bit easy. I listened through it 5 times - it was a weekend and I had time. And nope, nothing to see here.

It's meh. Some funky instrumentals otherwise unenjoyable.

Listened Before? N Interesting listen. Never thought I'd find a Bollywood soundtrack on here. It wasn't too bad. Not anything I'll just listen to, but I didn't mind it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: One Two Cha Cha Cha

Struggled with this a bit

Eh, I dunno. I've never had curry in my life

Thoughts before listening: 70s disco meets traditional Indian music....something like that? I don't really know. Review: This is okay. Its not a disco album, more of a Bollywood soundtrack album I guess. Traditional Indian music with a bit of a spy movie flair I guess. Not really my thing but not horrible. I'm going to give it 2-stars though.

Þetta fannst mér ekki skemmtilegt.

Weird choice. It wasn’t exactly a bad soundtrack but it was a soundtrack without context.

was ok - wouldn't listen to again

The Shalimar album artwork struggles to create a cohesive visual narrative. The awkward juxtaposition of dancers in the background against a stark, graffiti-style gun motif above the title feels disconnected and jarring. The graphic elements seem to clash rather than complement each other, creating a confusing visual message. The color scheme appears muddled, and the overall composition lacks the sophistication one might expect from a professional album design. A visually discordant and unconvincing album cover that fails to capture viewer interest. Album artworks rated: 26/1001 Music's also not really my cup of tea.

I find it hard to believe that this wasn't just selected entirely at random, but it's pleasant

Couldn’t find it on my streamer, but I get the gist. Not my thing.

Instrumental tracks are interesting -- kinda like a spy film. Definitely Western influences. But the songs with singing were corny.

This was... interesting. There were some bright spots, and I really wanted to like it, but most of this just sounded very dated and odd. Two stars.

70s crime soundtrack x Bollywood. What a mix up. Steets of Pimpri-Chinchwad

i'm still very confused as to how this made it on to this list. are there other soundtracks? i am surely missing something culturally here, but parts of it were fun.

I expected to like this more than I did but I think the dialogue inclusions and sometimes abrupt start/end threw me off

Not for me

It was fine as background but no real desire to go back to it.

Never really understood the draw of a soundtrack. Compilation type are interesting sometimes, but not the score. Are you cosplaying?

#414. Why is a movie soundtrack on here? And one from some random fucking Bollywood movie at that? I feel like there probably shouldn't be soundtracks on this list, but if there is, why not something good like the soundtrack from that shitass 90s Godzilla movie. That shit was fantastic. This one not so much. 2/5: one, two stars, cha cha cha

Maybe I’m overthinking this, but I don’t think a soundtrack should count as an album. That said this one was okay I suppose… I noticed some alternative percussion instruments, that was probably what stood out the most for me. Otherwise it was not super memorable for me.

Felt like the author was short of the requisite 1001 albums and googled “random Bollywood albums” to add some spice. I guess it beats another Deep Purple album. Other than some DJ mining it for breakbeats, I didn’t hear anything super interesting.

Bollywood soundtrack, sjovt nok men ikke et mesterværk

Sounds like James Bond got lost in a bazaar

Album 598 of 1001 Rahul Dev Burman -Shalimar (1978) Rating : 2.50 / 5 It is a soundtrack from a Bollywood movie. Everyone should listen to some Bollywood at least once. Not something I would come back to but was an interesting listen.

falopa

I really don’t know why this was on the list. A lame soundtrack to a Bollywood film.

One of those albums where I have no idea what was going through the list composer's head when they decided I needed to hear this before I died. Is there some significance behind this particular soundtrack that I'm missing? Oh yeah, it's a soundtrack, which is primarily what rubbed me the wrong way. Either way, it's not that bad or anything - it was honestly a nice change of pace from everything here, I love how grainy and lo-fi everything sounds - it's a loveable yet slightly unsettling aesthetic. Feels like an album that can be easily sampled too which is pretty neat, at least that's where my mind went while listening to this - thinking of all the potential sample opportunities. I don't think I needed to hear this before I die, but for what it is - at least it didn't bore me to tears.

I actually really liked this album. The first track was really cool and some of the beats on various songs were great. A cool, quirky soundtrack that would be fun to have on at a party. I'll put a few of these on my party playlists (yes, my parties are fun)

Not bad but not something I'd come back to.

So now we're dropping film soundtracks aswell?

How did this end up on the list!?!?!?! It was not great, but amazingly, not a one star vote either.

Meh! I like some Indian music. But this? Nah!

I like Bollywood sometimes… I don’t think I like this Bollywood. It’s very repetitive.

Interesting choice. Had some good things inside, the opening song was sampled in an album that I was really into a few years back. It’s interesting to listen to some of this obscure stuff and hear samples

Not my thing. Its hindi but has a pop american culture kind of appeal. Like it was produced for a wider audience. Its not bad but just not my cup of tea.

If we could remove the female vocalist from a few tracks, this would be a solid album. However as we can't, that really brings this down.

Catchy music and well done, just not my thing. Probably won't revisit it, but I enjoyed being exposed to it.

Sometimes I like that this list takes me out of my comfort zone, but after the first couple of tracks I couldn't wait for this to be over.

I truly appreciate the variety this album brings to this list, I wish there were more non-anglo records represented. However, this type of music just isn't for me at all.

Not my thing - but not terrible

Some of the songs were okay, but the whole thing *felt* like a movie soundtrack, and that's not my thing.

This was the soundtrack to a Bollywood movie. Had some fun tracks, but also a lot of very movie-sounding music, which is not what I'm looking for here. Stand-out: Mera Pyaar

1.7 listened 1x

I don't really have an reference for this. And it's a soundtrack.

How did this album make the original cut, must be some movie to the author maybe?

For indian music it wasnt that bad

erste song cool. zweite slappt jo heert. ich nimm ah s isch alles intrumental. lieb so alti film soundtracks. oke jetz singt sie hahaha. thats the way a ha a ha? finds etz chli langwilig. hä? was macht das do? countess caper au komplett random afoch morricone? naag devta isch uf hindi glaub? aber no funny. aiina wohi isch huuere schön. sie singt glaub würkli so en rag mode aber de rhythmus isch chli rumba oder so? richtig geil. denn feett geili gitarre mit delay jooooo. schöön. beber lez däns. rieeese flöte solo! romantic theme isch halt afoch filmmusig. isch schön aber wiso ischs do? ischs irgendwie meeeeega iconic z indie? mera piya shalimar isch okaay aber wiso isch das album do?

Bit of fun, not my thing.

This is fine. I do appreciate that it's very apparently real instruments and singing. I do think the instrumentals are probably better, mostly as some of the singing is just not for me. Some of the vocal embellishments are really really good, though. English is also my only language, so I don't understand most of the vocal songs. I'm also not a fan of this being a movie soundtrack. I'm not familiar enough with Bollywood movies and soundtracks, so maybe this is the best soundtrack to come from Bollywood, but that's not something I would know, or even really be able to tell, without listening to more content from Bollywood. Favorite Song(s): Romantic Theme
