Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Still know this album like the back of my hand although I’ve grown out of it now. There is no doubting that Chris Cornell is one of rock’s most amazing singers and this was such an important album for an influential band. Even if it isn’t exactly my thing anymore, I can’t deny its greatness and of course its place here!
Good album
To be honest, I was expecting I'd find this just barely okay, but it went in a very different direction than I expected! Loved the grunge, slight funkiness and slight psychedelia, just a real nice mix of genres combined with interesting lyrics. Didn't get boring although I did think it could've been 2-3 songs shorter. Also, didn't realize just how much Black Hole Sun really is Beatlesesque. Excited to relisten in the future!
I liked this album because I like Soundgarden. It had great moments and I enjoyed the vibe overall, but I found it repetitive, almost like it blended together.
Killer voice, excellent band, still a hard listen in a stretch. Not my favorite album by them, but definitely the highest highs of their discography.
It’s too long, but man, so much of it is fucking awesome. One of my highest 4 star ratings so far, could easily be 4.5 one day. 4/5
I feel like I should like this more than I do, but I don't. I'm going to give it a four star rating, but it feels over-generous in many ways. There's a lot of elements here that should tick boxes, Led Zeppelin style vocals, interesting time signatures, some good guitar work, but it all seems a bit superficial somehow.
This is a very good album by a very good band. I was there when it dropped and was, as everyone else, rather blown away by it. It has aged well, although the late Chris Cornell actually got even better (!) and in a sense Soundgarden was overshadowed by this. Nevertheless, a major player back in the day and still worthy, extremely worthy to own this album.
strong
Fire. 🔥 RIP Cornell
This is just so good. could i write poetry to this? y (i have)
Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil have to be one of the best singer/guitarist combos
Could be nostalgia, as this record came out my junior year of high school and the singles were all over MTV for years afterward, but this album is brilliant. Like much of the best rock n' roll, it sounds completely of its time without sounding dated. Plus, Regina loves it, so there's that...
4.1 one of the best grunge albums for sure faves: black hole sun, the day I tried to live, Like suicide
Solid wall of sound. Brought me right back to the dark dive bars where I heard it when it was new. These guys didn’t just phone it in. Good stuff. Could have used a bit of editing. There are several absolute 5 star songs on here, but not all of them. Would give it a 4.5 if I could. Feel like 4 is selling it short but can’t quite give it a 5.
great album, was long but didn’t feel it, i liked most songs and think these guys are a great grunge band
BLACK HOLE SUN
Great grunge album
Not the biggest band in grunge for me, but the album is fine
Gets a 4 at minimum because one of these songs was on Rock Band
nice
Overall a little heavy for my taste but his unbelievable voice and the great riffs carry it. Black Hole Sun is a forever favorite. My Wave, Fell On Black Days, and The Day I Tried To Live are new-to-me bangers. Extra points for that one time I sang "spoonman" (just the one word in the chorus) in conversation and my husband insisted it wasn't a real song. Even he had to admit I nailed the melody when I played it for him.
Great album.
Great old album. Songs from my childhood.
Classic album purchased from Columbia House record club in the 90’s. Cornell is the greatest male vocalist of all time.
I remember listening to this album on my Sony xplod boombox in junior high.
The album is good but with Soundgarden I have always felt like you could tell the difference between the hits and the others. The benefit here is that the “others” are still listen worthy they just don’t blow you away. Choice Cut: the Day I Tried to Live
The first half was better
Sounds like the most psychedelic grunge offering. Rhythm section are super tight and Chris' voice warms me with thoughts of my youth.
Nice
Chris’s vocals are amazing for this style. Black Hole Sun really takes me back. That pushes it into 3.5 territory. Also Spoonman… kind of feel bad eating this above Dirt but here we go.
Not bad
Chris Cornell was a great vocalist and this is a terrific grunge album.
Not perfect but close. The last 4th of album after The Day I Tried to Live could have probably been trimmed down to move me from a 4 star to a 5 star.
Great
Good stuff. Just a little late for the eclipse. 4.
Chris Cornell's voice is so iconic. Album felt a little long, though.
Good. BHS was awesome
great grungy guitars and lyrics Favorite tracks: Black Hole Sun, Superunknown, Like Suicide
I went into this album, not having listened to it in ages, and thought it was a certain 4. Then the 4 first songs left me quite unimpressed and I started to second-guess myself. However, the sequence of songs from Head Down to Kickstand is so incredibly strong, with The Day I Tried to Live being the absolute highlight of the album. Many great riffs, The 4th of July being the meanest and heaviest on offer, and amazing vocal performances from the late Chris Cornell makes this a solid 4.
Great album full of grunge classics, Chris Cornell has a voice that could shatter granite. It could drop 3/4 tracks to be a tighter listen, but there are no bad songs.
ehh better than down on the upside at least
I played in a grunge band when I was sixteen, with 3 lads in their late twenties or early thirties. I eventually got booted via email for not having enough confidence, which didn't do much to help my confidence. They were big Soundgarden fans and it put me off grunge. Most of my knowledge of Soundgarden for a long time was the Black Hole Sun video because it was always on Kerrang! This is good though. I miss Chris Cornell.
Great apbum. I love grunge and Sound garden is one of the best.
I enjoy this album a lot for a specific depressed mood. There’s a lot of good songs. It is a little long and the last quarter of the album starts to lose it some. Rating 4
Once I was in a car with my parents while Black Hole Sun was on the radio and my mom called this music to commit suicide to. How right she was. A much stronger album than I remember it being and I'm not huge on grunge or heavy metal in general.
That was fun
Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected
Classic grunge with of course maybe the best vocalist of that era.
Some fun heavy hitters on this one, great basslines and latter-track breakdowns. A tad too long and the vocals could be clearer at points. Favorite tracks: Let Me Down, Head Down, Spoonman
Good record
Conveniently also celebrating its 30th anniversary. An album Ive grown up with along with Ten. Outstanding lyrics and a killer band fronted by the voice of Cornell.
Great
Pure nostalgia for me, a centerpiece of the 90´s classics
While Soundgarden are great are making some riff heavy rock, they also carve out a really unique sound. Chris and Kim make a really diverse soundscape, using lots of different scales and subtle uses of less traditional instruments. This album has some of the most effortlessly great vocal performances. RIP Chris. I gotta say a few tracks get lost in the durge, stuff like Limo Wreck. Either way it dings.
blast from the past - but a great album
Great Grunge album. Could be a bit shorter and I generally prefer a rawer sound in grunge, like Nirvana. 8/10
Probably my favorite band rom the grunge scene. Heavier than the others I think, too. Can't say I've heard this full album before. Lots of great songs on here. A jam most of the way through. Ends on a bang too!
As someone who's never been a big fan of grunge, and prefers shorter albums, you'd think this would be a big swing and a miss for me. Surprisingly this is a very enjoyable listen. The songwriting is interesting and varied, some great riffs, very powerful vocal performance that carries a lot of the tracks. Not too shabby.
Bangers
All timer for me
If they ever invent time machines and make them accessible to the general population, my second trip – after first going back and telling my younger self what "transgender" means in hopes that she doesn't waste 29ish years in the closet – will be to go back and smack all my friends between the ages of 11 - 14 and yell at them for not introducing me to Soundgarden sooner. This particular album is a bit too long and has a bit of filler that feels a bit repetitive, but the highs are very high, and the lows are still enjoyable. I just adore this era of grunge, when it was still basically a midpoint between punk and sludge, and Soundgarden feels like the exact midpoint. Will be explore more of their discography right away!
A nice intesity of rock with interesting guitar and bass riffs, melodies, and rythms.
Great album. Chris Cornell arguably, the best grunge voice.
Strong 4
This album holds up! Every song rocks, and there's a variety in tempos. I must acknowledge how good the entire band sounds, but Chris Cornell is really the star of the record. I particularly like "Fell on Black Days" and of course, "Black Hole Sun".
I bought this when it came out on the recommendation of a friend and I hated it. Pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying it 30 years later - althoug it did drag on a bit.
I had not heard most of these songs. I liked it even though it is not in my normal genre
Heard this one in the 90’s. Great album and I still feel that this band is fundamentally a metal band with some grunge elements
Never gave Soundgarden a big listen before. Pretty impressed. Solid 3.8 stars.
Another great album from my high school days! I haven't listened to Soundgarden in quite some time.
Just shy of perfect.
A generally well composed album. Enjoyed the variation of all tracks.
I miss Chris Cornelllllllllllllll
Led Zeppelin and Nirvana’s bastard love child? Lotsa bass and drums, less distorto guitar and vocals. Pretty great stuff.
I’ve always loved how Soundgarden is so dark without sounding too depressing (unlike other Seattle projects). Chris Cornell definitely had one of the best rock voices of all time and this one had been on my must-have list for a while. [0150/1001]
Grunge is the way. Chris Cornell's voice was also the way. The important thing is this album keeps the same vibe throughout the whole length, without getting boring. Hard to achieve in my opinion.
Great album start to finish. Some songs were 5s for me and others were 4. Chris Cornell man. He's just amazing. There is no one else like him, never was. </3
So good. Chris Cornell was amazing.
No one sings like you anymore
Super
Good classic hard rock. Brings me back in time
4/5. Most of the songs on this album are great and I already had a few downloaded to my playlist before I even listened to the album in its entirety.
Played through Aux on my Hello Kitty CD Recorder and it slapped. Black Hole Sun is such a fucking Great Song wtf. Overall good its a 3.5/5.0 for me
Having not listened to this album in its entirety since the 90's, I enjoyed it more than I expected. That being said, is it among the 1001 albums one must hear before you die? I think probably not.
I don't know if it's enough to put me on their discography, but what a great Black Hole Sun...
hmmm it's good. i prefer badmotorfinger but like i feel like this would grow on me with time. also i'm surprised i haven't listened to this sooner bc i looooove some of the other "big" grunge bands
Heavy (for me), but a great sounding power album. A couple of well known songs in the mix as well. High 4
Solid 4 stars
Black Hole Sun is still one of my favorite songs from this era. This is a classic from the grunge era.
A quality album with some absolutely huge riffs and fun time signature changes/general weird rhythmic shit, and Cornell’s masterful vocals. Goes a bit long so it’s not quite as impactful as a more concise Nevermind or Dirt, but otherwise it’s top tier grunge
Lache hoor. 4/5.
Yup
Fell on Black Days is the perfect January song. Exactly how I feel when the world is gray, the days are short ... and you just want to crawl into bed. And, really, is there a better rock shriek than Chris Cornell's? No. This is Soundgarden's best album.
Thoughts before listening: Awesome album that was one of the first I ever bought with my own money. This is full of iconic 90s alt rock songs, and I'm excited to listen for the first time in a while. Review: So this album is as good as I remember, but for some reason, it hasn't stayed in my rotation like a lot of their contemporaries' albums like Ten, Vs, and Nevermind. In fact even in the Soundgarden discography I typically would say that I much prefer Badmotorfinger, even owning it on vinyl. That being said, this is a great album, and the hits on here are absolutely some of the best from that era. \"Spoonman\", \"Blackhole Sun\", \"Fell On Black Days\", and \"The Day I Tried to Live\" were massively popular at the time and they still stand as great songs today. This album also has some quality deep cuts in \"Superunknown\", \"Limo Wreck\", and \"Kickstand\" that I had nearly forgotten about before my listen today. Now there are definitely some filler type songs on here that drag this out a little longer than it needs to be, and that is probably why it hasn't stuck with me like the other grunge albums. This is a 4-star album.
Oh hell yeah. I had this CD in 94. Pumped. This album is great. Is this stoner rock??RIP Chris Cornell 😢
Rating: 9/10 Amazing album. The tone of the guitars was a standout on this album, they sound absolutely fantastic. The riffs and songwriting are very strong on this album throughout, no bad songs on here. Chris Cornell's vocals were fantastic as well, he sang each song with so much emotion and passion. The performances were great from all of the band members, all of the instruments were played with a lot of charisma and the dynamics between all of the instruments was fantastic. The album loses a bit of steam for me after the halfway point but its still an amazing listen throughout, will definitely be coming back to this one frequently. Favorite songs: Let Me Down, My Wave, Fell On Black Days, Mailman, Superunknown, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, The Day I Tried To Live, Fresh Tendrils, 4th Of July. Least favorite song: Limo Wreck.
Fantastic album. Cornells voice is one of a kind. Some great tracks throughout. A couple filler songs here and here with a track count of 16. Could definitely cut some for a more refined listen.
One of the reasons 94 was one of the best years for music in my lifetime.
About as great as grunge gets. Love Chris Cornell's voice. Black Hole Sun, awesome song.
Hinzu kommen noch "Like suicide", "The day I tried to live" und "Let me down" , die auch von den Texten sehr auffallen. Top Album
Great band, great lead vocalist. Lots of hits. 4/5
Dragged a little in the beginning, but picked up as the album went on. A definite classic, helped define the 90s with their unique sound and Chris’s strong vocals.
As the description said, this brought metal to the alt-rock scene. While metal was already introduced via Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, etc. this was a new rendition. Chris Cornell is one of the best rock singers ever, and I really enjoy the grinding guitars and rolling drums. 4/5 Favorite Songs: Fell On Black Days, Black Hole Sun, The Day I Tried to Live, Lease Favorites:
- For many years, I only knew "Black Hole Sun" from them. And the parody "Asshole Son", of course. I downloaded an MP3 of it with the name of Weird Al on it. False, of course. - Album starts great, but it won't really open up in the first listen. The bass-heavy sound gets a bit too thick as it goes on and on. Could be a bit shorter.
Solid rock album - lots of heavy-duty riffage to be enjoyed here. Although some tracks are weaker than others ("Mailman" kinds of lumbers along, for example), the bangers ("Fell On Black Days", "Black Hole Sun", etc.) still slap. and Chris Cornell is a force of nature.
Solid.
First listen: it's good. It's not amazing, and it is definitely not my favorite grunge record, but it's good. "Black Hole Sun" is a killer song. Second listen: same.
Really enjoyed this! Never really listened to soundgarden before, but dug it
This is a really good album, with a few slow spots. It gets repetitive, with a lot of noise hitting all the time. Not one I'm likely to return to, but enjoyed it.
While this album, in the simplest terms, fucking rocks, I do think a bit more variation could do it some good. A handful of the songs feel a bit too boring and unnecessary, and considering it's 70 minutes long there are definitely some bits that could be trimmed. Fortunately, it still fucking rocks. Favorites are Superunknown, Black Hole Sun, and Like Suicide
Soundgarden isch halt voll min sound (witzig i know).. ich mag am chris cornell stimm halt mega und fell on black days findi au uh schön. Sehr grunge, sehr schön, sehr stabil.
aso gester bini gar nöd begeisteret gsi aber ich glaub ich bin eifach nöd ide stimmig gsi hahaha jz gfalltsmer recht, es erinnered mich immer wieder ah anderi bands (saliva zB?), aber ich glaub es isch ener umgekehrt eill das album doch scho im 94i ussecho isch ALIVE IN THE SUPERUNKNOWNNNN head down chli weird aber hans easy gern black hole sun glaub s einzige lied woni vo ihne scho kennt han, find das supisupi es isch zwar chli lang und nöd jedes lied wär minere meinig na nötig gsi aber es sehr solids album findi, es isch catchy, het immer wieder sache wo eim überrasched und isch glaub recht wegwiisend gsi für so akternative rock/metal ah und au en gruess ah wyld impala, hans erst gester gseh sorry😭
Surprisingly interesting album. I like the odd timings! Not really the thing I would listen to every day, but wouldn't mind to listen to this again!
If Zep were a grunge band.
Nice album!
Loved this album. This is a genre I throughly enjoy. Some songs seemed a little bland and uninteresting. Others were fantastic. Spoon Man! 8/10
RIP Chris Cornell. Soundgarden may be one of the most overlooked bands of all time. Thriving but hidden during the grunge era as Nirvana overshadowed all the bands around them, Soundgarden had a more refined, less raw sound to them. Some great hits on the album with Spoonman, Black Hole Sun, and Fell on Black Days. Consistent sound throughout but there are some more generic tracks that hamper the album a bit. 8/10
Highlights: My Wave Black Hole Sun Spoonman The Day I Tried To Live Like Suicide Chris Cornell has one of the most unique voices that makes every song he sings his own. This is a really good grunge album that doesn't feel overly repetitive. Black Hole Sun is probably one of the most well known songs from this era of grunge, but until you've heard my guy Dylan perform this song on Rockband, you haven't lived. Some of these songs were already in my rotation and I plan on coming back to this album.
Classic grunge album, with Black Hole Sun still one of the best rock songs of all time. It is solid throughout, but many of the songs miss a certain something for me to give this 5 stars.
It took a couple of times listening to re-appreciate this album (at first it was somewhat ponderous). Finally, I can give a solid 4 stars and if cut by 20-30 minutes it might even have received full marks.
4.5 One of the best male vocalists of all time singing over a sound of an era. Epic album .
Nice one. Some not so great songs, too.
+1 for Chris Cornell, other than that its fairly average for its time
Overwhelmed with work so I won't wrote a long review about Soundgarden's most famous album. They're not my favorite rock band hailing from the Seattle area during the nineties, but this record (along with its pristine-yet-fully dynamic production) more than holds its own, and this decades after its release. To be honest, you can't say the same thing about most Pearl Jam recordings from that period, plagued by useless performative jam shenanigans and dated soundscapes. There's a "jam" aspect to Soundgarden as well, but the heavt riffs, melodic inclinations and skills for memorable vocal lines and impressive vocal performances perfectly complement the muddy, melancholic, dark subtext of those songs. We're leagues away from Nirvana here. Yet Soundgarden still had something very interesting to say about angst--and this in a way that was both catchy and artistically worthwhile. Of course, the twisted, "heavy" ballad "Black Hole Sun* and the hectic "Spoonman" are the more obvious highlights here. But most other cuts are very nice as well (cuts like the title track, "Fell On Black Days" or "Mailman"...). Some songs are just a little too long, and the total runtime is ia bit bloated as a consequence. But it's still a record that's nice to revisit today... So if I had room in my own list, I would be glad to include this LP. The thing is, I will maybe consider there's a whole bunch of other albums that need to go first before I hit my own 1001 mark. Abums with a 4/5 grade or close (translating to a 9/10 grade for general purposes) are usually part of my A-list. But LPs from 1994 might be an exception. There are too many great albums in that year (as in the 1967-1973 period, or from 1977 to 1979). And I can't have forty of them from one year in a list of 1001 essential records, going from 1956 to 2024... Other years need to be fully represented as well. Number of albums left to review: 343 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 298 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 158 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 210
Great from start to finish.
Its a classic grunge album
The dictionary definition of 90's rock. 3.5/5
I liked, but didn't love this. I love a good rock album with fun time signatures in different songs though so this fulfilled that!
black hole sun is an alltimer. I hadn't listened to much of the rest, but it was decent! 4 stars for being listenable as something that isn't really my thing
pretty good with some hidden gems
old Grunge days
I like it a lot. First time really getting into Soundgarden.
Brought me back. Quality album with some good standouts.
I really liked the vibe. Black Hole sun is great to sing along to, singer’s voice has so much depth, it’s dark and grungy and heavy in just the right way. Other favourites were 4th of July and Half.
I know so many songs from this album but had never listened to the whole thing all the way through. God, Chris Cornell had a beautiful voice…interesting rhythms (5/4, 7/4 meters in places) virtuoso guitar riffs and killer drums. I was more into Pearl Jam and Nirvana during the grunge years - Soundgarden felt a little too metal for me, in general. At this point, I really appreciate their sound and musical contributions
90s grunge <3
ja geil, iets te lang
Enjoyed this in the car this morning. Nothing too flashy in the playing bar some guitar moments here and there but there's a great groove all the way through. Chris Cornell's vocals are that cut above a lot of sub Eddie Vedder grunge singers. The run in the middle starting with Black Hole Sun is the high point but I thought this was consistently high standard throughout
# 120 : Great album, if a little too long - a bit of editing to get it down to less then an hour could have made it an excellent album, still great sounds throughout with Great variety, strong tracks, amazing guitar work. Favourite Track : Black Hole Sun Listened : 29/11/2023
Fun rock album
classic alternative album.
I dont wanna write a review. But is fucking good
Grunge machine goes brrr RIP
If i was alive when this came out i would’ve been insufferable
This is really good. My only problem is it seems to be a little too long.
so many memories listening to this album over and over again in the early/mid 90s. then memory of them performing on tour as well. perfect album to pump yourself up before going to play ultimate or basketball back in the day. still breaks my heart that chris is gone...
I've heard Black Hole Sun and Spoonman many times playing the game Rock Band. I don't remember if I liked them right away or they just grew on me, but I like them. The rest was new to me. Starts strong with Let Me Down, then just OK stuff that got a bit samey grunge after a while the tuned down guitar sound. The song Half was different and kind of cool. A low 4/5.
4.5
Had great guitar rifs and felt like a really good representation of 90s grunge rock / the crossover between grunge and pop rock.
This is a good album and I'll be listening again
Catchy, great vocals. Lengthy but great
“Black Hole Sun” is one of my favorite songs of the 90s. The album is a good context to hear it in, although it’s gets a tad long for me.
I thought that I was more familiar with this album than I was on this listen. I was excited to listen because I thought that I really loved the album. Somehow, it just fell a little short of love for me today. I mean, “Black Hole Sun”…sure…and a few other tracks, but as a whole, it was a little boring.
Big up Soundgarden - Chris Cornell is in my humble opinion the greatest rock vocalist ever to have lived. The emotion he spills into this album is intense, and the fact that something so heartfelt could still spawn so many hits is a testament to his talent
Classic 90’s Seattle grunge. It’s heavy and dark but it sucks you in. I definitely had some Uni flashbacks while listening.
At first I didn't really vibe with it, I though that it wasn't bad but not particularly good. With my second listen I started to like some songs. The beginning of the album still sounds boring though
Great exploration into the realm of 1994's rock/metal. Really enjoyed hearing more of Soundgarden than just their main hits.
Grungey and great
I wasn't into Soundgarden as much back in the day. But hearing it now, I have no idea why. Good stuff.
Classic grunge. Pretty good
Black Hole Sun is a highlight
Good album but it’s not really my style.
First 10 songs are great. Next 5 are okay. Would be even better if they stopped at track 10.
Liked \"4th of July\" Solid instrumentals in majority of songs
AJ: feel the rhythm with your hands
Was never a huge Soundgarden fan, but listening to this definitely helped me vibe with them more. Head Down was my surprise favorite.
Solid grunge album
There are some really good songs, and then some that aren’t working for me. Some really good songs on here that pull me in. And then some others are almost exactly opposite. They push me away. Songs I like: Limo wreck, 4th of July song, like suicide
The hits, THE HITS! Such a banging start to the album, first few songs have you off and going on a wild ride. There's a reason you know these tunes- they shred. Some beautiful changes of tempo with songs like Black Days and Blackhole Sun sprinkled in with Spoonman and My Wave. Great creativity in mood and lyrics, and all basking in the glow of Cornell's golden pipes. From low to high, whisper to howl, what a voice. As when this album was brand new to me, I still find a lull in the back half where my interest wanders, although some nice moments on the B-side too.
A lot has been said about Chris Cornell's vocals, but I will add that they were good. With Superunknown, Soundgarden introduced a distinctly more accessible sound. Focusing on "4th of July"---Cornell's poetry conjures with lines like "naked in the cold sun, breathing life like fire," visceral in their transfer of imagery and concept. This is a track of the highest tier in all aspects; a moment where something pure came through. "Like Suicide" is similar in its greatness, inspired by a bird that broke its neck on Cornell's front door, easy to derive meaning from one's personal interpretation. If the album is weak, its weakness is in the radio friendly tracks that deviate from what Soundgarden did best.
One of my favorite albums from childhood - a grungy, shining experimental frozen moment.
3,7
86/100
There isn’t much to say about this album. Soundgarden - a great example of what I personally would call “post-Nirvana-grunge”. I say this as a diss, or to belittle Soundgarden at all. They have a distinct style - great riffs and *obviously* the late great Chris Cornell. This album has many many great hits such as Spoonman, Fell on Black Days and the mammoth-of-a song Black Hole Sun, which in its own right is a generational classic. The greatest thing about this album is its consistency with how great each track is, if a bit of the same each time. Sometimes it can get repetitive to have the same sort of vibe throughout the album but that’s what you should expect from an early 90s alt rock album I suppose. Great album overall. Such a staple of the era it was born into.
Still hits pretty hard, only remembered the most famous tracks but the rest are good too.
Really good. Heavy, melodic, Chris Cornell, 1+ hour content. Really good overall. (82%).
Great overall composition
Really enjoyed this album front to back. Nothing about it was particularly supreme for me but Cornell's voice was amazing as always. Closest to 5 I can be without a solid 5 IMO.
Good, though the album feels samey by the end. Black Hole Sun is a classic banger. Overall: 7/10.
Not really my kind of music, still I kinda liked it.
There was a lot of great music released during the Grunge era during the 90's, with some incredible bands that have withstood time, but at the same time there were countless forgettable bands that released an album or two then disappeared. Soundgarden was one of those bands that rose during Grunge and have left a legacy of music that is both memorable and still relevant. The band was active in the 80's and 90's, broke up then reformed in 2010 until singer Chris Connell's death in 2017. The band's earlier albums are all good, but their most notable achievement was Superunknown. It contains some of their best songs and is solid throughout. I can't say I'm a big fan of the band, but I'll still play this album occasionally since I bought the cassette for my son when he was in elementary school, because he loved Black Hole Sun.
Soundgarden has a lot of quality hits, several of which are on this album. I'll probably never tire of hearing Black Hole Sun. Listening to this album in its entirety is somewhat tiresome. One hour is too much and some of these songs really aren't that great. I honestly didn't really enjoy my time with this album all that much. In spite of that I cannot deny the importance of rhe album, the talent involved, and how good the good songs really are. I guess a 4 for the good outweighing the bad.
3.6
4/5. Not really a bad song on this one, all goes hard, but difficult to differentiate between some of them. It also feels too long, especially without many differing themes and sounds. It's really close to a 5 but I would need to really like each song usually for it to reach that status. A more concise track listing, without multiple similar sounding songs, and it would be a perfect one imo. Still a great rock grunge album nonetheless.
Amazing voice and some great songs. Probably somewhere between 4 and 5 stars.
Punchy, as expected, would be brilliant live. Unique sound.
Overlong but dayum, some good stuff on here
I’ve said before that Nirvana belongs on the Mount Rushmore of grunge (presumably in Washington’s spot), and a strong argument could be made that Soundgarden belongs in one of the other three positions. The guitar riff in the background of “Fell On Black Days” may as well be the heartbeat of grunge. During “Head Down” I picture Hannibal Lecter decked out with his face guard and no straight jacket in a lightning storm, and with each flash he gets a little bit closer. “Black Hole Sun” is not only an iconic grunge song, but an iconic nineties song in general. The lyrics of “Spoonman” don’t seem to carry much weight, but it’s a headbanger regardless. I don’t know much about Soundgarden, but I do remember hearing about Chris Cornell’s death on the radio of a ‘98 F-150 on my way to clean pools on a May 2017 morning. With songs like “The Day I Tried To Live” and “Like Suicide,” we’re reminded that while rockstars may seem to be on top of the world, it’s a lonely place up there, and they have their own demons to fight. Chris Cornell certainly did. All in all Superunknown is a great grunge album, but I do think it’s much longer than it needs to be. Either way, this listen made me appreciate Soundgarden more than I ever had.
Enjoyed this
Really great grunge album. As a whole, Soundgarden definitely is not my favorite band of the style (how could they when Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Babes in Toyland exist) but this album is undeniably really good.
Almost a 5
Great album with some solid classics.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. I have heard the name Soundgarden, but never actually listened to them outside of Black Hole Sun. This album was a good opportunity to listen to them for real this time, and I really enjoyed it. What a great album front to back. I like it.
Good album enjoyed this one, Chris Cornell's vocals shone through on this. Could have maybe been shortened a bit to might the record a bit tighter but overall good stuff.
My love for sound garden grew a bit more interestingly! Throughout the years I heard Black Hole Sun, and I think that’s it, no other big hits on the radio that I remember having airtime. Me and some pals went to this rock festival, and Soundgarden was performing. I was absolutely floored having no knowledge at all about any songs, this band was amazing!!! So naturally as soon as possible, I gobbled up their albums and they became one of my favourite bands! Superunknown is a great piece, probably the best work that shows tints of the old and Soundgarden they would grow towards. So much songs I adore on here. I don’t necessary put this album on alsof, but I do shuffle their discography frequenty! Chris was a gem, so incredibly talented and sorely missed. Eagerly awaiting to hear the last takes of songs they are supposedly working on! 8,5 out of 10
Had only heard of Black Hole Sun before listening to this album. Can confirm that its a great album,
Very interesting record. Lots of odd riffs and melodies tied together masterfully. And of course, Chris Cornell was one of a kind. What a voice...
Gott rokk. Fyrirmyndar rokkrödd hjá herra Cornell.
there were several bands to come from the seattle area in the late 80s, and many of them were lumped into the “grunge” category. but one of these bands was not like the others… soundgarden. they were more metal, really. and they had the x factor that set them apart: perhaps the most gifted singer of the era, chris cornell. this album, in my opinion, is their magnum opus. it has it all… slowed down doom style riffs, mid tempo numbers, and straight ahead balls to the wall scorchers… and a solo by a man who plays the spoons! all in all, a magnificent album by a talented band. sadly, chris cornell was found unresponsive in his hotel room in may 2017, suicide by hanging, thus ending his life and the band. highlights: “fell on black days”, “spoonman”, “the day i tried to live”, “kickstand”.
This is another of those albums where I can almost forgive the songs I don't really like because of how much I like the songs I do like. Almost... but not quite. Brilliant album all around though.
It's long since been overdue to listen to soundgarden. Heard nothing but amazing things about this band. I wasn't sure whether this was grunge or not going into this since it didn't resemble anything of the pixies or nirvana l, who were seemingly the only other 2 grunge bands I knew anything about. I'm not even sure there is a definition for grunge to be honest. It's more or less 90s alt rock with heavy guitar tones, but each grunge band has their own unique contribution to the genre, and soundgarden seemingly are ko exception. Absolutely loving the tones, riffs, unique time signatures and overall feel of this album so far. Feels like I could swim in this album for hours and never get bored. And Chris cornell sounds absolutely beautiful.
From a classic era. Not overly familiar with it myself but I enjoyed it.
One of the best 90s rock albums, IMHO. I'm not super into grunge and hard rock, but you can't deny how good this album is. So many great tracks here. 4.5 if I could.
Superunknown was not an album I had previously listened to. Overall I enjoyed it. I had listened to "Black Hole Sun" and "Fell on Black Days" before this, which are great songs, but there's more to see here. It all fits under the label of grunge/metal, but there's a nice amount of variety and experimenting. However, it is not the kind of thing I'd sit and listen to all the way through very often.
Such a great sound. Some of the early songs get a little samey. I'm surprised blackhole sun wasn't my favorite, the day I tried to live is an anthem
Pretty solid album with a lot of great tracks
J'aime bien.
Felt like the album was running a bit long towards the end but this one was very good nonetheless.
Super! Also Unknown! The hits got overplayed and it's not my favorite Soundgarden album but it still hits that nostalgic soft spot
Grungen kulta-aikaa! Korostaa ahdistusta. 4/5
I don’t blame my group members for not being able to fully get into Soundgarden’s “Superunknown.” One even assumed my grungy curmudgeonness in the face of his criticism. But I think “Superunknown” is only Soundgarden’s third best album, despite its popularity, and the band occupies a weird place in Seattle’s early 90s grunge scene. Their roots are much more metal, which is clearer earlier in their career, and on the superior “Badmotorfinger.” After “Superunknown,” they got a bit grungier but in an unconventional way, on “Down on the Upside.” That’s the one I think I listened to the most back then. Chris Cornell has one of the best voices in the history of rock music, and “Down on the Upside” showcased it a bit better. For other great non-Soundgarden showcases of Cornell’s voice, Temple of the Dog offers something much more grunge, and Audioslave brings the hard rock. I’ve only checked out a little of Cornell’s solo work, though it's something I ought to revisit. So if “Superunknown” didn’t do it for you, I recommend trying something else from the Cornell catalog. As for “Superunknown” itself, “Black Hole Sun” was the can’t-escape-it hit. I can't help picturing the melting Barbie dolls from the music video when I hear it. But it’s my least favorite song on the album, and one of my least favorite Soundgarden songs. “Fell on Black Days,” “My Wave,” and “Day I Tried to Live” are much better. The album is overall too long, a problem that they would not fix on the follow-up. Trimming a few songs could make for a tighter package. “Superunknown” is part of a pretty epic year in music in 1994, but in the end it's not as strong as many of the others that year, or of their other output.
Brandi did black hole sun better but this is good. 😂
I did write a load of notes for this one but I forgot to save it, so not without tracks analysis on this one unfortunately. Overall I really enjoyed this album, I had already heard "black hole sun" and I class that as one of my 10 ten fav songs. The thing that really stood out for me on this alum was Cornell's vocals , they were fucking out of this world on all tracks. This album also made me reflect as there were some darker moments, and especially considering what happened to Cornell, it really made me reflect and appreciate this album even more. Fav song-Black hole sun least fav- There were some songs i did find a bit boring but I don't remember which ones
I know I’m headed for the bottom/But I’m riding you all the way.
Despite me giving this a four (because it is good) I'm disappointed in this album. Black Hole Sun is just such a good song that I figured the rest of the album would be up to snuff, but there is definitely filler here bloating the run time, and it makes the album much less enjoyable to go through than I would've hoped. However, stepping back and actually listening to the album for what it is, this is tight, and can get you into it, no matter the situation, and the songs that are good are REALLY good. I think all of that earns it a light four, despite it's hiccups. I mean, Black Hole Sun gets it up to a three star all on its own, so why not add a star for everything else?
This is a core grunge album and should be rated as such for a grunge fan like me, but if I had to apply levels to this, I'd comfortably say Nirvana>Pearl Jam>Soundgarden. But then again, I'd rate this closer to Pearl Jam than to Hole, so I'll go with a slightly begrudging 4.
Enjoyed this album a lot. Not heard much of Soundgarden but this type of sound usually goes down well with me. Big fan of the opener and ‘4th of July’.
13/15
Great production. Chris Cornell had such an amazing voice. a bit long, as was the standard at the time. Loses a bit of steam in the last third. Nonetheless a fun record. 3,5 stars
- Incredible grunge - Cornell’s voice is so talented and iconic - Maybe a hair long, could’ve cut Black Hole Sun in half -4.5
Dad rock
Rock oscuro. Un 4.
fav songs: Black Hole Sun, 4th Of July, Let Me Drown, Head Down least fav: Half Slayed
Never really listened to them that much. Pretty good.
There's rock and then there's big budget, blockbuster, leave nothing on the table rock. These songs are awesome and really layered. There's a wall of sound style to the production -- lots of details and flourishes and reverb to fill out the sound and make these already big songs sound absolutely mammoth. It's well done and very effective, probably because the songwriting puts such a focus on melody. I've never listened to Soundgarden outside of the hits ("Black Hole Sun" is a classic that still sounds great) and I really enjoyed this. Sounds just as good on headphones as it does through a car stereo. There are some cool surprises here too. “Half” is a really interesting one.
Rip i guess
Liked it then, like it now.
It’s overly long but damn that voice, and it goes hard AF!
7/10 far from a band album, but not really my style I appreciate it but, y’know
Very good grunge album with great vocals and no real weak moments. It is a little long and some songs are weaker than others (I never liked Spoonman) but definitely one of the better grunge albums.
'Black Hole Sun' is on my favourites list, but this album contains a lot more awesome tracks; 'My Wave', 'Fell On Black Days'. 4,5/5
Good album all-around but Chris Cornell’s vocals are the highlight.
8/10. Really good songs, not many lows. Great vocal performance, great mix and production, dark lyrics. Overall solid
I’ve listened to this one before and I love it even more! Just some tight grunge with great riffs and vocals. Black Hole Sun has my GH3 nostalgia. Album is a bit too long and repetitive as I started to check out in the 2nd half, but it still has its moments Fav Tracks: Let Me Drown, Fell on Black Days, Mailman, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, Fresh Tendrils, Like Suicide Worst Track: Head Down 8/10
7/10 i want to love this album more, i love so many things about it (the atmosphere, the vocal performance) but it's just too long and feels really monotonous by the end.
7/10. Yeah, I get why this is good, and Black Hole Sun is great and all, but I don't like Soundgarden enough to get excited by listening to them for 70 minutes straight.
Aside from the big hits, there's a bit of filler and it's a little samey by the end, but there are no skips and enough hits to keep you invested until the end. 8/10
Normally not the genre I listen to but I enjoyed this
great a classic
Right in my wheelhouse
Is Superunknown the best mainstream rock album of the 90’s? Honestly, it’s probably not better than Badmotorfinger, which is tighter. But it’s cool that after that LP’s surprise success, they doubled down on their sludgy sound and put some of their best riffs down (“4th of July” is totally not a song that an act chasing the top 40 would make), while adding more melody. If it was a song or two shorter, it’d be in the A range, so I hope a B+ will do.
Great, driving grunge fare with superb rock vocals. Turn it up loud in the car.
It's a monster of an album
Forgot how awesome this was
One of the few grunge bands where the lead singer can actually sing where the lead singer can actually sing. This album was great, all of the tracks were good. This is another great album I probably wouldn't have listened to without this list. 9/10
Grunge grunge grunge
I've listened to this so many times, one of the pinnacles of rock in that era. "Kickstand" still sucks, though.
Chris Cornell sure was talented and Soundgardens grunge sure is great to listen to. This album also has their hits like Black Hole Sun and Spoonman which I enjoy very much. The album as a whole on the other hand is alright. I think there's too many lows compared the highs. I also prefer Audioslave over Soundgarden.
Good album, somecparts reminder me on Pearl jam
Haven't really listened to much soundgarden before, but this is a decent metal album. Not unusual in any particular way, but well written
"Superunknown" is the fourth studio album by American rock band Soundgarden and the second one with bassist Ben Shepherd. It was produced by Michael Beinhorn (first time for them). The album has the heaviness of their previous releases but adds elements of pyschedelia, pop and especially arena rock. The drums and bass were recorded first and the guitars and vocals were layered over them. Yeah, this is a big sounding album and a pretty powerful band at the their height. Kim Thayil guitar and guitar riffs are a big highlight for me. Some label this as quintessential grunge; I'd actually say their previous album was heavier grunge but some songs are firmly in that category. The album themes/issues cover revenge, seclusion, fear, loss, discovery, substance abuse, suicide and depression. The album was a major success topping the charts in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. A whirly guitar, bass and drums come flying out of the gate on album opener "Let Me Down." This is a confident, rocking band. Vocalist Chris Cornell's sounds great on this song. The vocal and guitar layered give this a big sound. About crawling back into the womb to die, a la salmon. OK. A guitar riff begins the arena-rocker "My Wave." Fantastic guitar riff and chorus and interesting keys on this one. My favorite song on the album. Do whatever you want but keep it away from me and off my wave. And now we come to one of the bigger songs on the album in "Fell on Black Days." Another guitar riff open, more grungier. It's another interesting guitar key choice. Great guitar solo. A pretty depressing song lyrically. A very good under-the-radar song is "Superunknown." A catchy song. Guitarist Kim Thayil shines again. A more rock-pop song but still sounds heavy. Wobbly guitar begins their big hit "Black Hole Sun." Probably way over played on the radio stations I listened to at the time. An element of pyschedelia added. Cornell said he just played with lyrics and there's really not a meaning to the song. Drums and spoons drive the first single "Spoonman." Great guitar riff. A real life person in Artis the Spoonman. Another great guitar chorus and arena pop-rock song is "The Day I Tried Live." Cornell's best vocal performance in my mind. Trying to step out of being patterned, closed off and reclusive. An interesting song to check out is "Half." Bassist Ben Shepherd wrote and sings. Middle Eastern guitar. Don't give up. I actually like their previous album "Badmotorfinger" slightly more than "Superunknown." It's grungier and heavier but "Superunknown" is also a great album. The guitar riffs and choruses are fantastic and took Soungarden pretty much near the top of the rock world. This music fits Cornell's voice perfectly much better than anything he did after. It does suffer from the CD era coming in at over 70 minutes and could have been trimmed down.
It seems too long from the outset but then you realise there's a lot of quality on it
Great memories from the early 90s. Very heavy but I love the tones of each instrument. Very polished production for a grunge album. I'm not a big Chris Cornell fan but I do like his voice on this album. I think the processing on this album give it an ethereal sound but still heavy creating a sound balance. "Black Hole Sun" is one of my favorite songs. It's still just shy of a 5 star rating but pretty close.
The song structure is similar on many of the tunes in this album with enough differences to keep me interested. Spoonman, Black Days and Black Hole Sun are most familiar to me. I also really like the song Head Down. It has a trippier kind of vibe than the others.
4.5, Cornell has such an iconic voice and the music holds up.
Love this album. Dark and powerful but such top tunes.
Decent
Overall a solid above-average rock album. Black Hole Sun and Spoonman are big hitters. A couple stinkers but carried by the hits.
Black Hole Sun is a classic. The rest is ok
Great
Very good. Kind of like a mesh between classic rock and the grunge rock that was becoming popular at the time. Definitely added some songs to my playlists from this album.
Heard it a gazillion times don't need to hear it again lol
Taking cues from the most hedonistic of 70s hard rock, Superunknown is Soundgarden at their most evolved stage. Trudging and pummeling, whilst keeping their guards slightly down, this over an hour long work remains as compelling today as it did when it came out, ensuring that grunge's time in the spotlight would be ongoing despite happenings that thought otherwise. Favorites: Let Me Drown, My Wave, Fell on Black Days, Superunknown, Head Down, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, Limo Wreck, The Day I Tried to Live, Fresh Tendrils, 4th of July.
I love Chris Cornell and consider him one of the very top rock vocalists ever. As for Soundgarden, it has always been my least favourite of grunge's big 4. They played a much different sound than the rest of the scene and you'll hardly find any poppy tunes here as on Nirvana or even Pearl Jam's releases. However, this is not to say it's bad - on the contrary. The music on this album is energetic hard rock with depressing suicidal lyrics, which create great contrasts and break my heart considering how it all ended. They also played much more with progressive side of rock, adding multiple tempo changes and unusual time signatures. In that respect, it's much closer to Stone Temple Pilots than the rest of the Seattle scene. Listening to the album I get a feeling that this is also the most mature music that came out of that era. Other than Black Hole Sun (which is easily among the best tracks of the 90s), my favourites: Head Down, Mailman and Fell On Black Days which has one of the best lyrical description of depression I've heard in music. 4.5/5
I have been disliking most grunge entries uptil now, but this is a really solid album. Not only because of the songwriting, that I found to be inspired and varied, but also of course because of Cornell and his voice.
Phenomenal album, Cornell’s vocals and a killer guitar make this shit
:horns:
Some hits, but a few skippable songs.
Nose
Much more analog rock feeling (elec guitar, bass, drums) than I expected.
Great
spoonman 👍
An absolute banger of an album, wonderful to revisit. Favorites: My Wave, Superunknown, Black Hole Sun
Not just an essential grunge album, but an essential album. The guitars, the production, but above all the vocals. Chris Cornell was such a talent. Brought back a lot of fond memories. Favorite track: The Day I Tried to Live.
Honestly kind of slow for me at the beginning but then the energy really picked up. I think I’ve gotten accustomed to music that has 60+ layered tracks and my ear needed to get used to just the guitar drums bass and vocals. Super simple stuff but it goes hard
A great hard rock album, 90s style. A side note, the advent of the CD pushed artists to fill the capacity, leading to many releases to be in the 70 plus minute range. While not quite a double album length, it is awfully close. It is awfully hard to make a great double album, but that is the burden artists in the CD era put on themselves. All that said, Superunknown is pleasantly devoid of filler. The scope is appropriately expansive. The Day I Tried to Live rocks, Like A Suicide gives us an acoustic close and Black Hole Sun is an enduring classic. The progression from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath wanabees to a great hard rock band is impressive.
Very solid hard rock/grunge. This sounds like a Blueprint for foo fighters but with more sonic texture. Chris Cornell has a pretty astounding voice. While this album was not really my personal preference, if was definitely well made if a few tracks too long. Black Hole sun was the only one I knew before and it seems pretty obvious why when I listen to the album in full.
Very good
I recognized most of the songs on this album! Really enjoyed it a lot and can see how much it influenced the hard rock/metal bands to come.
