Gotan Project – La Revancha Del Tango (2001) On Day 140, I found an album that is strictly for the vibes. It’s a background-focused project that blends Latino elements with trip-hop and electronica immaculately, but it doesn't necessarily grab your attention or force you to decrypt an artistic vision. While it’s not groundbreaking in a way that makes the tracks stick in my head, I get why it’s on the list for its cinematic atmosphere. It’s decent for when you need something to allow you to think without being one-note. I did save "Santa María," which stood out as a highlight. A solid 3/5 for a mood-setting listen.

This mixture of tango and trip hop is like ear candy to me, but the album still manages to overstay its welcome and it basically repeats itself throughout its entire second half. I would definitely love to expand on this kind of sound, though. This really had the potential to be better than it actually is, but I'm still glad I heard it. Favourite track: Queremos Paz

Starts off proper groovy, head bopping Epoca has definitely been sampled by something Falls off after a couple of tunes, doesn't have that sticking power, becomes background music Pretty consistently decent all the way through, not offensive, but peaks with the first two songs. Better to listen to each song in isolation rather than as an album 3*

Has its moments.

My name is Weird Al Yankovic and this is the music I fuck to.

Loads of cool ideas on here and really well produced. I find it too engaging for background music not engaging enough for active listening.

It was interesting, and something I would have never heard without this list, but it seemed to drag on (I had to look to see if we had moved to a different artist or new record). Fine in general but definitely far from great.

I enjoyed this debut album from Gotan Project! I’d never heard of this album or artist so it was fun to listen to new music. I thought bits of this were repetitive but I thought the blend of techno and tango music went really well together. Overall, I had fun listening to this album and I would listen to it again in the future!

Loved it when it came out, but it's a lost a bit of shine over the years.

Seeing an album that I assume is full of tango numbers and maybe the odd samba tune if I'm lucky - :D Starting the first song in confusion and reading "musical group based in Paris" on the internet - D: Hearing most of the tracks have a nice little break to em and groove a bit, turning out to be a sorta neat fusion of tango, some rumba clave mixed in, and chill electronic with sampling, great music for the occasion that I'm listening (sitting in an office, rainy day) - ツ

Good background music

Cool but put a tango album instead ngl

Veel van hetzelfde, maar wel echt muzikaal!

Электронное acid jazz танго от французов.

Struck me as background music for any occasion (studying, reading, cooking, hanging in the backyard) but nothing more.

Pleasant loungey stuff. Odd that it should be keeping company with the most famous pop albums of all time, but I won't begrudge it. Listening to it calms me for an hour, and maybe that's enough.

Pretty cool. There’s not much variety from track to track, but I do like the vibe. Definitely different Favorite track: Tríptico

I listened to this, forgot to rate it, started listening again, and remembered why I forgot about it. Pleasant but kinda boring.

I found this album to be enjoyable.

french/Argentinean moby. weird but not bad, i don’t really like it that much though.

What is this?

General thoughts: Tango fusion with house/trance. The blend of instruments is nice, picked from different genres. And that's it. For me, the house roots are at fault. Songs are a beat and don't offer much more than that. Drums are lifeless, and the songs are emotionless in general. It can be hypnotic, but that's about it; five minutes go by fast, and the songs end with no highlights, perfect background noise. Particularly hated the vocal loops, sometimes they are so bad it's funny, like 'El capitalismo foraneo'. Manu Chao picked just the best parts of this genre/fusion and created something miles better. I mean, really, I've heard lower rated albums with more cultural significance, and those feel more backed to be on the list. Outstanding song(s): Epoca Weakest song(s): El Capitalismo Foráneo Cover: Nice and tango-ish Real rating: 2.55

Like it 3/5

what is this. I'm not displeased but why did it have to be 58 minutes? Whatever. Very pleasant but very background. Some standouts, I like all the songs enough, just very indistinct. It was very vibey though! There was a house song somewhere in there that I really loved. I think it was called " Tríptico." The album had some very interesting textures too, especially on that particular song. The more I listened to it, in fact, the more I started to fall into the textures of the album, and I began to really enjoy myself! Sadly I couldn't love it, just because of how long it is. I like it a lot though! 7.2/10

SATC soundtrack

Cant say I love this album, but its a really nice switchup. Not a ton of focus on the chord changes and not much here lyrically. Rhythmically interesting and playful interaction between instruments. At times, it feels like a hip hop record and other times its jazz I dig Triptico and La del Ruso. 2.5 stars

listened to it. lot when it came out, really didn't feel like it now.

Even more Millennial Hipster Nightclub Background Music! This time, it's got a gently Latin theme.

Laid back funky tunes

Cool electronic music. Made me want to take a walk having croissant in one hand and spinner in the other

Fain mi-o plăcut

Coffee shop music at its finest!

the Gotan Project formed in Paris as the result of a collaboration between three artists; one was French, one was Swiss, and the last hailed from, most importantly, Argentina. La revancha del tango ("The Revenge of Tango") marks one of the most significant developments in tango music, one of Argentina's most significant cultural exports, since the era when Astor Piazzolla reigned supreme as its most influential artist. it sees the Gotan Project combining live tango instrumentation—your acoustic guitars, your pianos, and especially your bandoneons—with trippy downtempo drum breaks and ample use of electronic effects. there's lots of electronic records within 1001 Albums... that aim for this spaced-out, somewhat minimal approach; my initial instinct is to beg and plead for more activity and volume, but "electrotango" seems to actually benefit from this approach! my favorite track is "Santa María (Del Buen Ayre)", which features a subtly evolving drum loop, bandoneon flourishes galore, and the catchiest bassline on the entire LP. decent 6/10.

Great vibe music.

Something different, nice.

Queremos paz - 2 Epoca - 4 Chunga's revenge - 2 Triptico - 2 Santa maria (del buen ayre) - 2 Una musica brutal - 4 El capitalismo foraneo - 2 Last tango in paris - 2 La del ruso - 2 Vuelvo al sur - 3

it's good background music

Never listened. Expectations: None - Verdict: Good - This is pretty chill, I like the atmosphere mostly. The Zappa cover is cool. There isn't really anything I dislike about this but none of it jumps out as a definite standout either. Some of the instrumentation is interesting but there are other dub albums I would reach for first.

Nice background music. Nothing to put on my playlist though.

5 - AVERAGE

It’s fine. Some really good moments, but feels disjointed

a vibe :) fave tracks: chunga’s revenge and santa maria

Makes for a nice chill listen, but it really doesn't sound much like tango to me

bien aimé néanmoins j'en avais un peu marre a la fin

Not a huge fan of foreign language music but the instrumentation was pretty enjoyable.

Favorite track(s): Chunga's Revenge, Triptico, Last Tango in Paris

Kinda meh.

Nothing notable.

This is basically fine. Does nothing for me, but it's not offensive.

This was fun and chill. Not my usual vibe, but good stuff.

Extra points for Chunga’s Revenge cover. Seems quaint now but it’s not a bad album.

This is the most French sounding album I've heard on this list, and it's a somewhat modern electronica/neo-tango album to boot. Wasn't expecting that. In fact, this might be the only album of its kind on this list. Would I listen to this again? Probably not. Didn't hate my listening experience, however.

Have not heard of this band - even just the name. Just looked at the song titles and it's all in Spanish. This will be interesting... 1st song - "Queremos paz" - oh this is an instrumental that seems like a trip hop beat with a Spanish flair. Kinda cool. Well, there are some brief vocals of someone talking in Spanish. 2nd song - "Epoca" - similar vibe - but this time with a woman actually singing in Spanish. I don't know what she's saying but her voice is nice. Wait, the Wikipedia page says this is a French album and it doesn't show any female singers either. I'm confused. "Una Musica Brutal" - bass and drums reminds me of that Amy Winehouse song "You Know I'm No Good" which came out 5 years later. This had singing but I still liked it. I also think I hear the drumming style of James Brown's "Funky Drummer" in several of these songs. This is definitely outside my normal musical bubble - which is exactly why I signed up for this album a day thing. This was a fun listen. I likely wouldn't sit down and listen to this whole thing front to back - but I did end up liking half the songs along the way and I wouldn't mind them showing up on my automated playlists. I liked the 5 song run from "Triptico" to "Last Tango in Paris". I mostly preferred the all instrumental songs. Who knew I would like trip-hoppy, electronica tango music? Liked songs on Spotify: 5/10 Rating: 3/5

Bellino simpatico

Queremos Paz 3.2 Epoca 3 Chunga's Revenge 3.4 Triptico 3.3 Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre) 3 Una Musica Brutal 3.5 El Capitalismo Foraneo 3.3 Last Tango in Paris 3.4 La del Ruso 3.1 Vuelvo al Sur 3.5 Score: 3.27

I mean, yeah, this was pleasant enough. I could see popping this on for a dinner party or something. Not sure it needs to be on the list, but it's cool.

Cool groove on a Friday afternoon

Pretty good. Mostly instrumental stuff, a few tracks overly repetitive but otherwise an enjoyable listen. I’ll not be rushing out to buy it, but it’s better than most.

Found this boring at the beginning but persisted and found myself thoroughly enjoying by the end. Great music to work to

Pretty great background music. I really enjoyed the first couple songs but it got a bit flat after that. Average album in my opinion.

This Brazilian album made me feel like I was in an Irish pub in Bulgaria

French tango, James bond Chunga's revenge

nice background lounge music

Turns out tango isn’t really my thing…

3 stars

Difficult to rate this album. It starts off really strong. I loved the first three songs. The first few tracks really hit with that fusion of tango, electronic, and world music vibes, and it feels fresh and exciting. The tracks just weren’t shifting enough to keep things dynamic. It felt abit repetitive towards the end. The album definitely has its standout moments, there was a lot to like about it and I’ll definitely be revisiting it when I’m in the right mood. Favourite Track may be Chunga’s Revenge.

Fancy background music. Makes me want to plan an art heist.

I'm sure there's a lot of cultural context I'm not getting. To me it just sounds like pleasant background music. A bit long and repetitive, and I don't see myself ever listening to it again. But it sounds nice enough not drop it to a 2.

This was an interesting album and a cool sound. Great trip-hop and overall a good vibe. I don't think it really stood out to me that much, especially compared to other trip hop albums I've had so far on here. But a cool sound and I'm glad I know about it now. Would go back and put on in the background again.

Tango Argentinooo

Top tier background music

Aw shit. I have been fighting this whole list that instrumental albums are highly powerful and its infuriating they're rarely.include one. And then they drop this "okay but not memorable" album as my first instrumental. Damn it.

Good beat to chill and study to 🤷‍♀️

Love the vibe - and not a slam to say the perfect music to work to. Not sure i needed to listen to it before i die, but im glad i did.

Pretend to be flexible and interesting

Trevligt, men mest som bakgrundsmusik

Trevlig lyssning medan man gör något annat.

Helt okej

Didn’t hate it, wouldn’t listen to it again. It was good music to listen while working.

Not exactly my thing but still good

5 Lame eurobop electronica ppl who love this defo also love wearing fedoras but it’s not bad either lol

It's pleasant enough. Some tracks in particular like Triptico I really like, and the French tango theme is cute. But overall it does feel a little more...pedestrian background music/DVD menu. At least compared to the similar(-ish?) artists I used to listen to...Propellerheads, DJ Shadow, RJD2, Nightmares on Wax, Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, Amon Tobin, Ugress, Dust Brothers etc.

Interesting album that I had never heard of before. Started promising but after the first track when we started getting the breathy vocals, I tuned out.

Super strong start- I was thinking- wow, I have been missing out. But then it fell short.

Not bad at all Bit long, but good. Funky in parts. Good vibes

Puff! No se diferencia una canción de la otra, pero es buena música de pasillo o de sala de estar

Fun album I've never heard before.

This will be my soundtrack to robbing a casino

it's an interesting choice for this list... I quite enjoyed it as backgroudn music, but I wouldn't revisit frequently

Lowkey stylized.

Some of the instrumental parts were cool, but a lot of the more electronic elements took me out of it a bit. Not really something I’d listen to outside of this

I was excited by the prospect of the Zappa cover, except one wouldn't know, other than the track name. It's a safe, kind of French/Latin jazz/electronica fusion experiment, and also a bit boring. Perhaps I'll hear this again in a hotel reception lobby. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆ (5/10) Total reviewed : 210 Already owned : 47 Purchased : 10 To buy list : 4 Nope : 149

Pretty interesting.

This was an interesting album, not bad but definitely not something I would listen to alot lol

O pôr do sol que o álbum pinta é quente, aconchegante, me lembra Thievery Corporation A trilha sonora de uma tarde no skate Faixas favoritas: * 2 Época * 3 Chunga's Revenge * 4 Tríptico * 8 Last Tango In Paris

This isn't bad, but not much really happens in it. Latin trip hop music sounds interesting, and they have some good moments, but this could have really been taken a lot further. Mid 3.

Cool as hell

sounds fun to dance around to

I was vibing with this but then it just kept going and going.

Eh. Fine

🥇queremos paz 🥈una musica brutal 🥉la del ruso HM: epoca, triptico

A solid album mixing tango sounds with modern electronic production, though I had a hard time appreciating it beyond the point of good background music.

Never heard of this group before, but I enjoyed this for the most part. Maybe I just like the bandoneon sound.

Chilled, mellow and ambient. A good album for a quiet sunny Sunday morning.

Interested

Fine? Fits in with that pleasant, late 90s trip hop vibe, but without the darkness of a Massive Attack or Portishead. Pleasant enough, but not totally sure why its here - not a great example of the genre or mind blowingly innovative. Just...fine? Low 3

Clearly it's not the anonymous background music that a lot of reviews claim, definitely it's better than that.

Different, but good.

Electronic tango, interesting. Overall I found this a bit intriguing. Though I must admit the accordion sections made it feel a bit cliché... hard for it to not feel a bit like a french comedy. This definitely has no reason at all to be as long as it is either, as most songs were quite monotonous and same sounding. I'd probably put this on if I wanted some french café feeling at home for whatever reason, but not for serious listening. Weak 3.

pretty ok for the most part didn't do much for me but at least it was chill

3 nice! Just nice! Nothing more but nice, just nice!

It was some fun background music, and that’s about it!

I like it, but there's just so much of this style of music I can listen to in one go. It's really nice on a mix tape, but when listening to one tune after the other it gets a bit repetitive and you tend to tune-out. It's quite good, makes me think of a Tango-Spanish-style Thievery Corporation.

Not really my thing but the music was good

It's good. It's tango. Tango is always good. Apart from that, I really like the drums in this album, electronica and breakbeats (if I heard it right) in tango is fun! Though I have to say some tracks are not so distinctive if you aren't paying much attention...It should be around 3-3.5/5 to me.

Fairly enjoyable, but nothing special in my opinion.

Do you remember Bomb Voyage from Incredibles? I feel like this is the music he would listen to on the subway on his way to his next heist. ¡AH, MR. INCREÍBLE!

Some nice grooves and beats. An enjoyable listen.

The most French album ever. Favorite track: Queremos paz

𝘓𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘰 introduces electrotango as a distinctive fusion, blending traditional bandoneón lines and tango atmosphere with electronic beats and downtempo production. The concept is refreshing and immediately recognizable, giving the album a strong identity right from the first tracks. While the mixture of old and new creates a stylish mood, the record leans heavily on that formula. The arrangements are smooth and polished, but the songs sometimes feel more like variations on a single idea than a journey with dramatic shifts. The album works excellently as a vibe — cinematic, smoky, and rhythmically elegant — yet doesn’t always evolve enough to stay gripping across its full runtime. A fascinating and unusual sound, even if the novelty becomes the main appeal rather than a fully immersive album experience.

I thought it was okay. Still kinda confused why a French band's limited lyrics are in Spanish haha It kinda dragged on with little variety

18/11/2025 It was just good elevator music, that's all. Spotify listeners: 774.6k

Cool album that blends a few genres together to make a memorable soundscape

Interesting but not for me

Middle of the road for me. Didn't hate it, would play it again. Rounding up from 2.5 to 3.

Was very alright background music but rarely inspired much attention. More like a 2.5 than a 3.

I cant say Ill listen to this again but I enjoyed it.

I wish this music played while I'm on hold with health insurance companies.

nice sound jazzy in places enjoyed it. anyone who covers a FZ song is worth a listen

French tango electropop

Interesting but not my thing.

Really interesting music and a fascinating record. At least on first listen. Indescribable from a genre standpoint. Think I need to be in the mood for this, but it was really groovy. Usually not into the predominantly instrumental stuff, but I liked this. Not like anything else I’ve ever heard. Debating between a 3 and 4. Feel like the newness of it is tempting me to rate it a 4, but if i listened to it repeatedly, it would probably be a 3.

You know, I expected this to be alright, and I think it's slighty more interesting of a fusion of electronics and tango than I could've ever expected.

I mean it’s alright

I’m just on a generational run of the most ok albums ever. This is a really unique album blending Electronic and I guess Classical (?) I don’t really know what to call it off the top of my head but you’ll know what I mean when you hear it. It’s a good album but I can’t see myself being so hooked to come back to it.

For once a foreign language album I can appreciate. The tightness of the beats and the production elevate above the lyrics. I bailed at the end of the album, rather than continue with all the mixes. The strength of the originals was enough to satisfy me. A decent working soundtrack.

Wha…? Oh ok!!

This is “cool” music. Like Ezra would love this. I’m not sure I get it, but I appreciate its inventiveness.

I've never listened to this album (38). Nice grooves, but gets repetitive.

it was fine. it was good. I didn't think about it much.

3 stars, it’s pretty good for what it is

I feel like there’s no way to give a review to some albums simply because there isn’t a lot to talk about for some. This one is one of those albums. The only thing I can say about this is one word: neat. It comes, it drones on, and it leaves. I guess electronic tango is… unique, and some bits are nice. But like… c’mon man. What part of this was necessary to do before kicking the bucket? This one actually nearly put me to sleep. There’s only one nice thing I can say about this album: it was neat. Favorite track: Queremos Paz Other hits: Triptico, Una Música Brutal, Last Tango in Paris

Cadê a perversão sexual? 3.5/5

Not my style, but really didn't mind it as background music.

Different

I don’t speak Spanish but the groove was groovin

A perfect accompaniment to this evening’s dog walk. Like Spanish LoFi beats to study to. Not much else to say about this album except it was enjoyable and I would definitely jam this again while reading at a coffee shop or fishing on a lake. Oh, and Fuck “Psycho Circus”, KISS’s worst album since everything else they’ve ever done previously to 1998.

This is fascinating. I love it - it's absolutely perfect background music to work by. No vocals, excellent vibe. Also the perfect level of pretentiousness for a dinner party. I certainly didn't need to hear it before I die, but I'm just as certainly glad that I did. Influence 1. Hits 1. Quality 4. I really kind of liked it 4. 3

Interesante supongo, no la clase de música instrumental que escucharía pero no estuvo tan mal.

Not unpleasant background music. Zappa cover is cool.

Not bad but not for me

I really appreciated this album being on this list - it's the type of music that was interesting and different, and that I would never listen to otherwise. Nothing mind-blowing but thoroughly enjoyable.

This is a charming collection of music. I particularly like the Zappa cover, Chunga’s Revenge. I actually heard this once over 20 years ago in a French dormitory. I confirmed it with my sister. Something about it must have stuck in my mind. That being said it might be another 20 years before I play it again.

The album is a little dry, but isn't without it's charm. I don't really know anything about what makes good production, but this album sounded crispy. I hear a lot of the late 2010 obsession with lofi jazz here. Gotan Project definitely had a part in that era of music history.

i was listening to this on headphones and was like "this isn't right". i moved it to my phone speakers and had a great time with it. it's such a chill album, great vibes, if companies hold music was at this level of quality i'd probably enjoy calling up companies 10 fold. i doubt this'll be something I well, ever return to, but it def had a hold on me hehe.

Not a bad hybrid between Tango and electronic music; it did well. Felt a bit lacklustre apart from the first song, which showed why these genres can work together.

Had quite a few albums like this where they are pleasurable to listen to, but they don't stick in your head or offer anything deeper. Good background music, the second track was instantly recognizable from an advert I think... Wouldn't be in a rush to listen again.

Dreamy, like if I was in the richest elevator in Spain or something. Good vibes, like a movie score for a heist on the riviera?

I’m sure there’s no Soda Stereo or Almendra or Charly Garcia or Los Cadillacs or Invisible on this list but thank god we have some hip downtempo-tango for art school and ivy league students. It does sound super smooth.

Not bad as background music

Not bad, especially for not speaking Spanish!

If this was in the list of 1001 Albums To Be On Hold With (Your Call Is Important To Us But We Are Experiencing An Unusually High Volume Of Calls) then this would absolutely be number 1. As it stands, this is pleasant and well-delivered but not something I would return to.

Enjoyed this - but best as background music whilst working! The other reviews calling it elevator music are a tad harsh, but I can see where they're coming from. Nonetheless, funky and an enjoyable listen. 7/10

Latiny jazz. Jazzy Latin. What’s more to say really! It’s smooth and good for a background soundtrack but didn’t stand out much to me across the board. (2.5 stars)

I assume this is a soundtrack to a non-existent movie. But one just popped into my head about a superspy named Jaime Contreras. Jaime is on vacation in Rome when the Mexican government requests he retrieve the priceless Mayan artifact El Calendario del Oro. Jaime tours the Vatican with his love interest Giuseppe. However, Giuseppe dies in a drive by poison dart attack. Jaime must take on the persona of world-renowned Tango dancer Bolo to bring the killers to justice and find the artifact.

Good mood kinda stuff. Would like to listen to on a road trip.

This is a very sexy album! Great to chill to. A little repetitive, and the tracks are a little too long. But I enjoyed listening to it, because this list has served up some absolute shite for the last couple of weeks!

Repetative - too much of a good thing.

This sounds exactly how one would stereotype 21st Century French Music to sound. It's not bad by any means, but does drag on too long. Favorite Track: "Chunga's Revenge".

Oh yeah, the Gotan Project. I enjoyed them back when they came out around 2000, and still do. Some beautiful Argentine tango with accordion and other instruments I can’t identify and lovely voices laid on top of electronic beats. It’s a fusion that works best as a soundtrack for cooking, a cafe, dinner party…slightly spicy background music.

Some of it sounds like the music you would hear in a heist movie set in southern France but I did like it.

Good work from home album. I feel like you can find this music anywhere though

Very interesting album. Definitely not something I’d have ever come across on my own.

3.4 1x

Most of the songs felt like background music, but the sound overall is pretty good

I found this album enjoyable even though I didn't particularly love it. It was nice to get something a little different than the long streak of Anglo/American rock and folk records that've come up for the last couple weeks. Instead, I got to hear a fairly modern jazzy French record. Even though it was more mellow than my normal preference, I wouldn't call the music bland. That said, it was a little boring. It was also pretty long, both in song length and album runtime. I found it be more suitable as background music rather than something to focus my attention on. It worked well in that function. Despite its negative aspects, I had a positive listening experience with this one. I don't view it as a "great" album, and, while I'm not sure it is something I needed to hear before I die, I did find it pleasant and rate it as solidly good. Overall: 3.2/5

Weird one. Artificial sounding, background music. Definitely sounds like an album where the artist is "____ project". Didn't hate it, just confused. 3/5

Good guitar work. That’s all.

Listen to half of it, has an anxious to the music but I didn’t hate it, I think I would need to listen to more from that artist

Electronic + Tango. Chill vibes. Good music for a hot summer day while you smoke a joint.

kinda funny. Interesting at the least so I can respect that Will I listen to again: 0%

Eh, fine as background music. Some moments caught my attention and it wasn't a bad listen, but a whole album of tango (even if using more modern styles) is not really something I need to return to. Tracks that caught my attention: Una Música Brutal, La del Ruso.

this was a pretty cool listen, enjoyed a lot of the instrumental elements and the songs with vocals were dead cool aswell, what i imagine dancing the tango at warehouse project would feel like the female vocals gave a real oldschool jazz vibe, like mid 60s astrud gilberto to be specific (anything remotely close to stan getz samba gets my cock hard) great album to pull out for your spanish friend during his first trip on mushrooms, will definetly listen again 3.4/5 FTW

So This is the first time I've heard this and not understanding the lingo I can only judge it on the vibe it gave me. Nice sound, obviously latin but I felt that the accordion gave it a French feel (I also got melancholy dystopian "12 Monkey Vibes" throughout). There is an unresolved energy about the tracks giving a feeling that something is building. If I owned it I would play it a lot while I'm busy with work, but I don't.

This album has great music. Feels like it’s our of an ocean’s movie. However, it’s not something that I would want to listen to on purpose. 6/10.

meh. there must be some background lore as to why this is a must listen but whatevs

really cool find, enjoyed this

J - 3/5 Best Track - "Epoca" F - DNL

This would be a 4 star if it were half as long. The entire album is one idea, one sound, one very specific style. It's too monotonous after two tracks.

Good background music

i'm not really sure what this album is supposed to be or who it's for. it's not bad, just kinda... out there and baffling. if i want french electronica from the turn of the millennium, daft punk is right there. if i want south american bangers, there are tons of options on this list from elis regina to joão and bebel gilberto. i’m just not sure when i’m gonna reach for the gotan project and their “neotango” genre. but at least it's something different. favorites: queremos paz, época, santa maría (del buen ayre)

It was fine background music.

Although it's hard to rank highly an ambience-type of album, this is definitely one of the better ones in this collection, with a nice European touch of accordions blended with electronic-oriented music. I'm pretty sure I haven't really heard anything from Gotan Project, or this album in particular, so it was fun to hear these tracks for the first time; I particularly enjoyed "Epoca", "Triptico" and "El capitalismo foraneo", as well as the video and music for "Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre)" (although I was also struck at how similar this track sounds to their excellent remixed version of "Whatever Lola wants" on the 2003 album "Verve: Remixed 2"). I'm a bit confused by the fact that Gotan Project is listed as a France-based band, as everything seems to be in Spanish, but maybe that's just a Euro-thing? And I suppose also due to their focus on Argentinian tango as the driving force (and why they're named the tango-anagrammed "Gotan").

enjoyed this album but not sure I'd listen again.

Cool background music

eh its fine. Seems like background tracks for parts of a James Bond movie. The spansih behind it is nice, not much else though.

Boring background music. The beats are so basic on this it’s ridiculous. The Spanish (?) is nice but that’s all it’s got going for it plus it’s waaaaay too long

Fun listen but nothing special for me

Vibes were nice, but nothing really stood out to me.

Good stuff

honestly, this album really grew on me as it went on. not sure if i would necessarily jump back into it, but i think this would be a beautiful background music section for a dinner party. you could really stunk on folks by pulling this up

Very unique sounding electronic music. After some time it did start getting tiring, with it just repeating the same couple of bars for 6 minutes straight with little change.

Tämähän oli mainiota rytmi/konemusaa tangomeiningillä.

Its 2004. You walk into an express to buy jeans and a going out top. This album is playing. You go to the Starbucks to get a cappuccino. This album is playing. You got to a borders to buy Harry Potter for your nerdy niece and left behind for your prepper grandpa. This album is playing. Spiritually this album is just what commerce sounded like 20 to 25 years ago. This 3 stars is really 2.75.

Soigne et intéressant, mais un peu froid à mon avis

Okay background music, but I felt I should be watching some avant garde art house film about the streets of Paris after dark.

certainly unique, elevator music vibes... overall i did not hate my listening experience, at times it was even enjoyable Fav tracks: Epoca - creeping ballroom tango with dancing instrumental on top of swaying strings Santa Maria - energetic (comparatively) with a driving bass line and nice percussion

Best Song: Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre). Nice and groovy. Worst Song: La Del Ruso. A bit too jazzy for my taste. Overall: Very chill, relaxed album. Nice for having on in the background or while working, but also not so special that I'll come back to it often.

I ultimately like my tango less electronic and my electronica less tango-y.

I like the fiddle and it has some neat parts. Just drags at times and get somewhat repetitive. It has some jazzy influence when aren't always my favorite but its not bad.

Solid instrumental jams. None particularly stand out as hit tracks, but some stand out for being slightly odder than the rest. Heavy use of instruments like accordion, mouth organ(?), and some distinctive light-texture percussion definitely give this group a unique sound. Where the music falls flat is in its compositions. Structurally, the songs are pretty weak and tough to sing along to or cover (as another band). Each track bounces from idea to idea without ever really settling, which makes for a frustrating listen. There's a reason why ABAB song structures do better than ABCD on the charts. In general, there isn't a "head" or riff/hook that is returned to or developed in any of these pieces, which also separates it from the jazz genre. I guess I'm not really sure what Gotan Project is going for here. In Época, we witness an accordion being used for the first of many times throughout the album. It's also a good example of my earlier point about song structure. There's some instrumental, then two verses, then a completely different instrumental (idea-wise). Wacky, and also difficult to jibe with. Chunga's revenge, a Frank Zappa cover, still has one of the best song titles I've ever heard, and is coupled with some odd yet endearing vocalising. I was able to tell people nearby that I was listening to a song called Chunga's revenge (and certainly gained some coolness points in the process). Tríptico is a solid track but feels a little weaker than the rest because of its over-reliance on that guitar riff and corresponding synth backing. Santa Maria has a fresh and well-produced sound. The percussion is some of the best here. And the light interaction between different instrument melodies is fun. Vuelvo Al Sur has the most vocals of any track – and props to the singer, because she's great.

Lovely mellow, jazzy, mostly instrumental stuff. The vibes are great and it's nice background music that's not too distracting, but it's also not something I'd necessarily reach for when I'm looking for something to listen to.

A combination of electronica and Latin sounds brings this album to a relaxing experience, loved the feeling throughout and how it can be listened without feeling like it drags. Will listen to it more times, to understand it more. Recommended!

Always cool to get something I've never heard of. This is like electronic loungey tango music. It sounds pretentious and it is. It sounds like something that would play in a swanky European hotel, like Hotel Costes or something. And there's a cover of the Last Tango In Paris theme. I liked it, honestly. The late '90s and early 2000s were so fucking weird! I wish I liked it more because unfortunately it really does sound like hotel music, but I do appreciate the novelty of it. After nonstop Kinks and Willie Nelson and Pink Floyd and ZZ Top it was nice to get something actually different for once.

Today I realised that gotan is tango backwards

Actually, this was pretty chill. Not as jazzy, not as world, just good working music.

2.9 I was listening to this in the background while at work. It was great background music for me but it would probably stay just that.

Tres francais. Interesting and familiar with pieces I was familiar with from pop culture but not one I'd sit down to again.

This was fine to listen to. Didn't really grab my attention.

To be clear, this is very much not my thing. That being said it was good! Not great, and I doubt I'll listen to it again but it was a cool song with a great fusion. Glad it made the list. 6/10

3 - cool, feels parisian

Cruise vibes but gets a bit samey after a while.

great restaurant music

Enjoyed this, but it kinda faded into the background after a while. A lot of songs that wouldn't sound out of place in a cafe on the continent, circa 2005. I like the fusion of genres, some of the songs are a bit dated though. I remember hearing a lot of music like this around the turn of the millennium. Kind reminds me of the Ministry of Sound chill mixes too.

Trip hop beats and tango tunes make a dinner-party or coffee shop album every bit as successful as you would think.

This is a combination I never would have thought of, South American music combined with trip-hop style beats, and it works quite well - especially in that opening track. It's just way, way too long. You can cut some songs down by 3 minutes, it's way better. It's too samey to be an hour long

That's not my taste in music - But ok

I can understand the esteem, but not really my thing for a full album hang.

Hipster hotel lounge background music. Not bad per se, but not particularly interesting.

Latin Portishead vibes.

Fun, nostalgic, I enjoy the blending of genres but it’s hard to sit through this album from start to finish. It’s also the kind of music I would expect to hear at a club.

I thought it was good background music. Didn’t feel like the main act of any experience.

Ihanaa respectful kolmosta

I'll probably never listen to this again, but it was a fun album for the ride home. Nice grooves.

On hold music, it was relaxing to listen to, but its not something I would seek out to listen on my own.

6/10 Pretty interesting, overstays its welcome for a project of this type, though I still appreciate the interesting blends of Electronic music and Tango omg everyone want me

Pretty good

Some cool tunes, good background music for work or chores.

When I was little a couple of these songs were used in washing machine commercials and I unfortunately can't listen to this album without visualizing squeaky clean plates and gleaming pipes. Other than that it's uhhh pleasant sounding and inoffensive. Perfect as retro coffee shop background music. Fave track: Santa Maria

Rating: 6/10 French electronic music that clearly sounds French.

Pretty chill electronica, not chaotic or noisyike a lot of other stuff from the era. I like the use of different instruments over the qlbum, like I think an accordion in the opening song, Queremos Paz. Unfortunately much of this album blended in for mw and I didn't recall a lot of what I'd heard. But i know I enjoyed it throughout, so 3 stars.

Hotel lobby music. Was a 2 but they did Zappa so it's a 3

Really cool

What I imagine walking around France sounds like.

An upgrade from regular background music.

Of course I don’t understand all of this. But there were moments I totally locked into this. 3/5

Feels like a what they play in the toilets at French Nando’s. Decent vibes but really samey. Fav song- triptico Least fav - vuelvo al sur Specific rating 3.4

Pretty alright for studying music, but wouldn't really listen for any other purpose

интересная хуйня, будто скушал таблеточку и закусил круассаном

Pleasant electronic music album with a European tango twist to it. Different than any other electronic album I’ve heard so it was pretty interesting overall. Can imagine this was on in the background of the odd hip dinner party hang. Doubtful I’ll return to it but I did enjoy it enough for sure. 3 stars

Interesting.

Background music

It was fine.

I've learned that I generally like French music when it pops up on this list. This album, however, I really don't know what to make of. It doesn't sound particularly inventive from a musical standpoint, since it feels more like they are trying to imitate an earlier style of popular french music. Mixing that with electronica is interesting, I suppose, but it starts to sound very samey after a while. It's pleasant enough, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to get out of it 3/5

I really enjoyed this! The instrumentals were interesting and incorporated a lot of sounds. Not usually huge on electronic music but this was a solid album.

nice ambiant music. listen while working and did the job

Oh no. The "legacy" of this album is that it's included in this list. I was worried! But it wasn't as bad as I expected.

Tango meets electronica. At first I was reminded of the type of world music CDs that you could buy at Starbucks twenty years ago. But it got better overtime. Easy to listen to in the background.

Electronica meets vaguely “world music.” Interesting samples and overlays. Good as cafe music, to create a vibe — or slower pieces in ecstatic dance, I guess? Creative and interesting enough to earn a 3.

Soundtrack to the speedboat ride from Monaco to Cannes, watching the Côte d'Azur drift past as you head towards the setting sun

I'm a solid Xenial. A few years ago, I had a girlfriend who was a youngish Millennial. I used to play downtempo music like this in the background when we were hanging out. She called it 90s coffee shop music, and she did not mean that in a good way. Even though this is an album from 2001, I think it would have certainly fit into that category. I enjoyed it, but it's best for the background, and maybe don't play it for anyone under 40. Three stars.

was a good easy-listening background music

An interesting blend of genres that fills a niche interest. It is educational in showing how old genres can be given more appeal. But it remains a situational music with a time and place.

Pleasant instrumental (if words they were in foreign language and just blended with rest of music).nothing stood out except the artists name.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! Not bad background music for work.

I sadly didn’t manage to finish this album. It’s nice and I don’t always need lyrics to stay focus. But here… omg, it was just awful to my ears. At some point, the songs started sounding the exactly same.

Background music but good background music

3 stars for the creativity

Alko hyvin mutta lässähti, liian samankaltaista

Very nice. Loved the rhythm, track and listening to lyrics and the language other than English. Was it French?

3.5 Really cool but a little sleepy for me

Mellow as hell, i liked it. I almost forgot i had it on, while i was working it just became the soundtrack for my morning

Vibey maar niet helemaal mijn ding

Fun, but nothing showstopping.

Cool jazzy beats with some interesting covers.

Boring but not awful which is saying something considering some of the other albums I’ve reviewed

Weer heel wat anders. Lekker hoor. 3,5/5

not bad, nice tango rhythm

The music is unique enough. They've got a trip-hop vibe going on. There are some cool Latin influences in the guitar playing and I dig the Spanish vocals. They keep it French, adding accordion over the songs. They mix the accordion with a delay pedal a lot which adds to a cool psychedelic effect. Overall there wasn't enough variety between the songs

A well produced and good mix of instrumental. Long and not dynamic enough for my taste. Not worth a relisten, but not bad.

Had no idea I liked tango music like this- great to work to. Highlights include: “Queremos Paz” “Chunga’s Revenge” “El Capitalismo Foráneo” “Last Tango in Paris” and “Vuelvo al Sur”

ok , listenable

Inoffensive.

Overall: 5/10 This is the kind of music I picture being played in the background of a Bond film where he spends most of the runtime seducing ladies across South America. Cool concept to mix Dub and Tango music, it's just not something I see myself coming back to. Good music for studying or relaxing. Fav Song: Tríptico Least Fav Song: Una Música Brutal
