90s club/techno. Not bad for what it is. Not really my bag.

This was fun. Essential? Not so much aside from Groove is in the Heart, which is starting to feel eternal 35 years later . That said though, this album is unique and feels like a good cusp record, bridging the pop/dance acts of the 80's and 90's respectively and in a positive way. It is also pretty impressive to have Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, and Q-Tip on the roster !

Fantastic album cover. Whatever the hell this is going to be, I just know that I'm along for the ride. No way! No way! I knew this band rang a bell. The vocalist of the band (Lady Miss Kier) sued Sega for copyright infringement over the character of Ulala from Space Channel 5. The original SC5 is one of my favourite games of all time - easily within my top 20. If this album bears any semblance to the campy atmosphere of the game then I'm all for this. Towa Tei's name is also familiar to me after a brief stint of listening to shibuya-kei. Worlds are colliding so hard right now. I didn't like this album much on my first go, though I've come around to it a little more on my second listen. The biggest limiter for me is the dreaded piano. A staple of dance music from the time, I find the sound horrific. It just doesn't sound good and doesn't mesh with the other sounds of the album. Despite this, there are some good cuts on the album. The opener - "Deee-Lite Theme" is a good tune. The percussion was a lot heavier than I was expecting for an album of this make - it almost feels like jungle music. The follow-up track, "Good Beat" is also a good song. The instrumental was surprisingly quite dynamic and varied, even if the song is burdened by the weakest vocal performance from Miss Keir - very strained. "Groove Is in the Heart" is the obvious highlight. The use of the slide whistle is surprisingly quite effective and I like the "funky sound". It meshes well with the songwriting and Miss Keir's vocals. All this being said, the album does drag itself on for waaaaayyyy too long. Almost 50 minutes of music is near-overkill for an album which is both extremely dated and of a constant high energy. Curious to see what the book has to say about this album. "Groove Is in the Heart" is a common showing on compilation albums. The band is largely regarded as a one-hit wonder. The aforementioned "Groove Is In the Heart" was a smash hit across Europe and the West. An eclectic mix of genres. The book tries to make a bit more of a case for this album than I'm letting on, though I'm pretty dubious of this inclusion. The music is pretty competent across the board and is definitely out there, though it's also firmly rooted in dance stylings that were popular at the time. The aforeaforementioned "Groove Is In the Heart" appears to have a bit of a legacy within dance music, though I don't think there will ever be a song with such star power to where it necessitates hearing an album of otherwise meager tunes. It feels to me as though this album and it's associated band came and went with little influence. I think this album is worthy for inclusion as a representation of early 90s dance music, though I wouldn't vouch for this album were I going on the basis of mandatory pre-mortem listening.

I'm glad that "[They] like it", because nobody else does. "What is love?" Love is skipping this album. "I couldn't ask for another" Brother, I didn't ask for one of this in the first place. It's incredibly disrespectful of this website to make me listen to Kraftwerk yesterday, foundational early Electronica that holds up astoundingly well, and then to make this the next album. It's a spit in the face to Kraftwerk, really. Oh, thank God it's done. I thought Grove Is in the Heart would be decent, but it was barely better than the rest of the trash on the album. No favorite song for me on this one.

“Is there more to it than ‘Groove Is in the Heart’?” And the answer is a resounding no. That track is the sole bright spot on this album - a funky throwback that sounds like nothing else on this record and was a huge hit around the globe (the fact that it had an eye popping, candy colored music video probably didn’t hurt). The rest of the album unfortunately sounds like bog standard late 80’s/early 90’s electronic/dance music with the occasional strangeness (“Who Was That?” being a prime example of the latter) thrown in.

Wanted more fun from this album, but it’s just okay.

Does anyone actually go out of their way to listen to this outside of a dance club or other such setting in which people are dancing and raving to electronica music? Needless to say, I was not a fan.

Great, fun dance vibes with unique synths, samples and singing. Surprisingly consistent with great songs all the way through keeping me interested through the lot. Just nothing else quite as catch as groove js in the heart.

My sister introduced me to this one when I was in middle school,I felt so cool. Most of the album is a chill vibe and then the titular song comes out of nowhere. You can tell they threw everything into it, soooo many samples. Bootsy Collins AND Q-Tip?! I have heard that song 1,000 times and it will never get old.

it is wild how Deee-Lite got onto the whole diva house thing like a year after the trend started popping off. of course, nobody's really here for cuts like "Good Beat" or "Who Was That?", but we'll get to that soon. when i was first getting into late 80s and early 90s house, i was sort of offput by how synthetic and often cornball the components sounded, too synthetic for its own good. now, of course, i find a lot of charm in those odd squelchy basslines and UK soul inspired cuts. even if i'm probably not going to remember most of them, they're a lovely little time capsule. the record tries a little bit of everything, and whether you think it was successful or not depends on whether you think it stands up to the deep cuts they were inspired by. i dunno if i'd trade "Deep Ending" for anything off of Strictly Rhythm, even thought i like it. of course, then there's "Groove Is in the Heart". this song sounds, looks, and feels eight years ahead of when it came out. its livelier than the rest of the cuts on the record, and i actually don't know how they pulled it off. everyone was capable of it, no doubt, but you gotta assume they were really surprised in the studio when they got everything but the guest spots done. like, "wait what the fuck? how did we do that?" it's like being the first person to BLJ in Super Mario 64 in the 90s. something beautiful and terrifying has been enacted by your hands, and you're not sure you can do it again. but pretty soon, everyone's gonna be doing it, and they'll look to you as some mad pioneer.

A quality dance album. The beginning is the stuff, and Groove Is in the Heart is such a great track. However, the album takes a downslide from there, and honestly, it takes it from a 4 to a high 3 on relisten.

I don't really have much to say about this album, it didn't sound super interesting, nor did it sound bad.

A very unique blend of minimalism from all three members - vocals, samples, live instruments - that comes together for something greater than the sum of its parts. Strongly evokes early 90s NYC. Clear influence on the likes of the DJ Shadows and El-P’s of the world. The poppy and traditional aspects of this record are its weakest points. Listened to: walking in BBG. Favorite tracks: Good Beat, What is Love?, Groove is in the Heart

I can't imagine anyone cool dancing to this music in the club. But the 90s were weird, and I've never been cool, so what do I know. The music doesn't really hold up to me, but it's not offensive.

Q-TIP JUMPSCARE this has maybe got to be one of the most popular songs he was ever on. I feel like listening to the whole album kinda nullified the fact that I guess they are a one-hit wonder, but so many of the other songs are great and dare I say ahead of their time. The ones with a drum machine don’t work too well as the kicks just don’t hit as hard as with the sampled breaks. Singing really adds some flavour to make the looping instrumentals not too boring. The little sprinkles of guitar also make it much better. Favourite songs: deee-lite theme, good beat, what is love?, world clique, groove is in the heart, who was that?, deep ending. Overall around 7/10

I listened to this while cooking dinner and had the best time bopping around the kitchen. How fun is this album?? It's mixed so well too and has a great flow. Plus ypu know I'm always delighted by a Q-Tip appearance. They said it - We're going to dance and have some fun. Dig!

"Groove is in the Heart" is a romcom-movie-montage legend, but every song sounded like a vaguely less-good version of it. Overall this album seemed iconic for the time and also has strong continued presence in gay culture, but isn't something I'm into.

I'll admit that, after seeing the name of this band and the cover, I thought this was going to be awful. Like really not great. But for what it is, it's fine. It's a very, VERY 90's sound that in some ways has aged well (since a lot of 90's stuff is now back in fashion, especially in music). For a dance album, it certainly is danceable. I do feel that, at times, the beats are a little too complicated to be truly danceable, but largely that isn't an issue (I also have very little idea what I'm talking about, really). But there is just something about this album that works, and I find it a little unexplainable. Not every track hits, but when they do it works. Maybe it's just the sheer amount of confidence that radiates off this thing, the sense that the people involved were going to be completely unbothered by what critics or the public said about it, they were just gonna do their thing. That demands some respect. We have to talk about "Groove Is in the Heart." Talk about 90's. And the slide whistle? Really? But hey - it works and it's one hell of a track. What a great 90's bop. Boring and weird. Catchy, but not in a satisfying way. Every song feels exactly the same, down to the tempo and drum machine effects with sporratic vocals or other melodies overlayed. Probably good for background music in a club, but not good music.

It's okay. I'm a bit surprised it's on the list; as far as I'm concerned Deee-Lite were one-hit wonders. The whole album is similar to the one-hit I guess, but not quite as much fun.

It's pretty boring. The sax and trombone on Smile On are cool, and I could swear somebody sampled it, or it sampled somebody, but the internet is letting me down on this. Either way, grooved in my heart with that, but not the rest of it.

I was excited to listen to the album, but it was kind of meh. Amazing how one song can sound so much different than the other ones in terms of production and all around quality and then it not be surprising that that is their most well known hit.

It feels weird that this was made in 1990. I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. It was fine. Some funky and psychedelic moments throughout are the good parts.

This isn't really my cup of tea, but it is interesting and cool. This kind of late 80s / early 90s dance music was definitely important for the evolution of EDM and dance music of today. Honestly though, this shit just kind of annoys me.

World Clique is definitely one of the more bizarre albums on this list. There were quite a lot of points in the album where the songs had many different things that they wanted to try with mixed results. The results were generally pretty good and had their moments but sometimes, the weirdness did get a little too much. There were definitely quite a decent bit of solid songs here which all sounded pretty unique from each other but some did go on for a little too long causing the beats to get a little bit repetitive. This is one of those albums where you have to know what you are getting into to really enjoy it but if you do, you will find quite a bit of enjoyment here. Thirty five years old and "Groove Is In The Heart" is still a killer track! This was a fun album and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

I was groving with this, but oof, What Is Love is PAINFUL. Who Was That is weird - and was that one of the pre-programmed electric keyboard beats? Odd but largely benign album.

Very 90s dance music. Was kind of fun and had lots of strange sounds and samples scattered through each song. Groove Is In The Heart is an obvious standout, but the Deee-Lite Theme track was a lot of fun too and had a great beat. Not my genre, but certainly stands out in this genre. By the time I got to the Groove song, which has a distinctive vibe, I was tired of the music.

Wild and wacky, this is pop I feel no one has ever heard. It starts kind of boring, and I didn't love the dated feel of the singing and beats for most of this, but then I got to the back third, and man, what a jam. Groove in the Heart is good, but Who Was That and Deep Ending are really awesome, and were worth the listen by themselves. Overall, weird stuff. Doesn't really sound like anything 80s or 90s, but still sounds dated.

The repetitive beats are annoying with any artist, and in this case, while it gives an 80s/90s vibe, it's only use is as background music at a playground or club. I basically disliked this, but I can see how it made moves within electronic pop. Not sure why Apple Music classified it as rock.

I would say I mildly enjoyed this one. A lot of the beats were catchy, funky, and felt like something I would enjoy in a club on 90s night or whatever. I did feel like it was dragging until Groove Is In The Heart came on, which was the obvious standout. Also liked the opening song and Power of Love. Low 3.

I've been really into this one. Just good clean electro pop fun with some interesting arrangements and solid production quality. While this has a distinctly 90s tone, the dance floor grooves are timeless and I could easily see a lot of these songs integrated into modern DJ sets. The energy is great, vocals are effective (and nicely layered), and the grooves are undeniable. Smile One > What Is Love? is a highlight here for me. Love the fuzzed out, burbling bass with the bright blips on the latter. Reminds me a lot of some songs on an album released last year by Bolis Pupil and Charlotte Adigery called Topical Dancer. Groove is in the Heart is a jam. Not a lot more to dig into here. This was good clean fun and I loved it. High 4 / 5.

Kinda fun, high energy, poppy. No real standouts, but no real low notes. Repetitive, but not overly so. Mid-low 3. A nice change of pace when comparing to Sabu.

That was an alright psych pop kind of album that was pretty much right down the middle for the most part. Right up until Build the Bridge at the end which was fucking whacky as hell. Was always thinking 3, this didn't move it up, but was definitely quite the addition. I think I knew Groove is in the Heart.

Started out well, then got pretty repetitive until What Is Love. That song gets a little sludgy and bangs. Groove in the Heart is the obvious highlight on this album, even if it reminds me of that cringey dance scene in How I Met Your Mother. This had its highs and lows, but was a moderately average album to me. For that it gets a 3!

I’ve just discovered a new guilty pleasure—World Clique is a fun, infectious dance album that’s impossible to resist. The beats are catchy, the energy is high, and I thoroughly enjoyed every track. This is definitely an album I’d revisit. Going in, the only song I knew was Groove Is in the Heart, a track I’ve always loved. The rest of the album carries that same vibrant, feel-good energy, making for a great listening experience from start to finish. 1990s dance music, 1 hit wonder category, this is going to be a struggle. Well no I really enjoyed this, it’s fun and funky, and sounds as dayglo as they look. I’m no dancer but listening to this got me grooving during the day, can definitely see me listening again, so a surprised 4 Star.

Ah, I remember the time when, as a fourteen-year-old child, I learned about "Groove is in the Heart", and being an idiot, I looked up the music video. Mortified, I watched as three grown-ass adults danced in front of a cheap green screen. Definitely impacted my life as a music connoisseur.

Fav song: Groove Is In The Heart (random Q-tip jump scare) It's ok, some classic sounding 90's dance house music but mostly just quite forgettable, a lot of structures harkening back to the days of turntablism with the super long intros and endings with little variations. The Q-tip cameo was my favourite part of the entire album. Song nice vocal hooks here and there though :)

So groovy, I enjoyed this more than expected. Build the Bridge and What is Love? Were two of my favorites. Parts of Build the Bridge reminded me of Streets of Rage 2 level music.

Great samples, flourishes of classic disco house, funk house, and deep house with colorful abandon. Further accentuated by the 90's-wave of boisterous sampling efforts by Towa Tei. Some of this is too poppy for me but then again it produced "Groove is in the Heart" and I can't be mad at that. Bravo you goofballs, bravo.

I'm not sure this is an album I needed to hear, 100% was on this list just because of Groove is in the Heart (which is oddly like 120% of the volume level of the rest of the album). I guess I don't actively dislike it so I'll give it a 2/5.

Like most, I'm only familiar with "Groove Is in the Heart" when it comes to this album and group. Lovely hip-hop/funk/dance jam that will often appear on my music playlists. Knowing only that single coming into today, I never quite had a grip on Deee-Lite's identity as a group, though. It's clear after listening that Deee-Lite is unique group in the dance & house world. You hear aspects of house across this album, but it's a bit more out there than what you would normally hear from this era of house/club music. Wikipedia also describes this album as "psychedelia", which seems apt. I'm not sure how one dances to most of this music in this album, though. Not as fast and upbeat as other house tracks from the early 90's. Slight aside, I was impressed by most of the personnel involved here. I knew Q-Tip had a feature on "Groove is in the Heart", but Bootsy Collins apparently contributed a decent amount here too! As expected, nothing matches "Groove Is in the Heart" here, but there were a few tracks that were still deeelite-ful (boo!) and fun.

Poppy, bubbly and fun. Would make a great house party soundtrack.

There is something off and ersatz about this. Smacks of major-label A&R money trying to ride the house music/daisy-age boom? If anything the production is too polished to feel authentic. Want Maceo Parker on a track? Sure, why the hell not? At its heart is vacuous flim-flam. Groove is in the Heart is a cracking 1-hit wonder though.

Of course ‘Groove Is in the Heart’ is an absolute all-time banger and by far the outstanding track on here. I don’t get all the hate for this album though. They have a fun vibe and aesthetic and it is good upbeat house music that puts a wee spring in the step

Great album - definitely listening again!

I thought this was going to be peak shitty Europop based on the name and album cover. I do have a fondness for Daft Punk (one of my first favourite groups) so the house beats appeal to me. I'll give it up the album is pretty groovy and it can be quite infectious Unfortunately, a lot of stuff on top of the beat feels a bit hokey and drags the songs down. There's too much going on, I think this would've worked better if it were a little bit more stripped back or downtempo. Some of the added layers like the ascending and descending bells (if that's what they're supposed to be?) on Smile On sound juvenile (I can't think of another descriptor that doesn't sound so pretentious) There are some good uses to these though, like the oldschool synth sound like Kraftwerk or early Depeche Mode on tracks like What Is Love? and ESP, or the funky guitars on Who Was That? The vocals aren't poorly done, but they're a bit schlocky and daft. I suppose to a lot of people these components are part of the appeal, but not to me, unfortunately Highlights: What Is Love?, ESP

Maybe this album mattered in the dance music world at the time given its apparent ability to be inclusive, but it ruined all the parties I attended back in the day. And it almost ruined my day today after listening to it 30+ years later. The only groove in my heart is the one this crap album permanently took from it.

y'all are a bunch of haters, this album is fun 😭😭

when i was in high school, i would always try to hit up the half price books stores in my area and spend hours looking through the $1 CDs they had on clearance. i'd find anywhere from about 3 to 15 CDs from artists i'd heard of but never really gotten into, various 80s, 90s, and 00s one-hit wonders, and all sorts of random goodies that the rest of the world had decided were passe. they certainly weren't all hits, but you'd be surprised how much great stuff is out there if you have couple bucks and an open mind. as a result of this pastime, i started priding myself on being someone who would listen to not just the huge single by a one-hit wonder band, but also the rest of the album it was on, and maybe even some other choice tracks from their discography. i found a ton of my all-time favorite artists this way, and here are a few greats (in no particular order) that i think everyone should check out: goldfinger, tally hall, meg & dia, ludo, protest the hero, stroke 9, moxy fruvous, crash test dummies, eve 6, fountains of wayne, nena, alien ant farm, die toten hosen, and the presidents of the united states of america. a lot of them are only known for one or two big tracks, but check out the rest of the album those hits are from if you like what you hear. that's why you're on this website, right? anyway, World Clique was not one of these hidden gems, and Groove is in the Heart is really all you need to hear from Deee-Lite. 3 stars.

The album was self-produced by bandmembers Super DJ Dimitry, Jungle DJ Towa Towa and The Lady Miss Kier Kirby and included guest appearances by Bootsy Collins (bass), Q-Tip (rap vocals), Fred Wesley (trombone) and Maceo Parker (sax). The album received mixed reviews with some finding their dance music laden with hooks and being unpredictable while others found it formulaic. It was successful commercially due to its singles reaching #14 in the UK and #20 on the Billboard 200. The group introduce themselves on the opener "Deee-Lite Theme." A sax and synth sample. Nice drumbeat. An extended synth intro begins "Good Beat." Alright, a deep bass and hypnotic dance beat. A sample of MARRs' "Pump Up the Volume" carries the melody. Echoing vocals by Miss Kirby. An overlayed xylophone to the melody. A piano starts their second single "Power of Love." A deep groove. Wah-wah guitar. Electronic drum beat. Miss Kirby's very souful vocals. Miss Kirby keeps repeating in whispering vocals "Why Don't You Listen to What the DJ's spinning" in their third and final single "E.S.P." An echoing synth and changing electronic drum beat. Jungles noises and vocal samples taking this into the pyschedelic dance area. And, well, they master that pyschedelic dance theme in their wonderful "Groove is in the Heart." A drum sample of Vernon Bunch's "Get Up" and riff sample of Herbie Hancock's "Bring Down the Birds." The irresistible groove and vocals by Miss Kirby. Lots going on. Inserts of a sax and trombone. Q-Tip with a rap break. One of the best songs of the 90's. This album was a lot of fun. Strong, playful, sexy and soulful vocals by Miss Kirby. Deep and funky dance beats and bass. They mix up the instruments carrying melody with guitars, synths, piano, sax, various samples and even a xylophone. They keep it interesting and do venture into pyschedelic dance territory with their weird synth noises, samples and beat changes. I found this album original with really not a dull moment

just fun and funky to a tee. 90's dance club music has never sounded better. It gets a little repetitive for me in some spots (around What is Love, to be precise), but to keep up this energy across a whole album is difficult. It just put me a good mood altogether.

One good song doesn't make it a good album

Groove Is in the Heart and some other songs. Deee-Lite was known in both the hip-hop and club scenes of New York City, pulling from a range of danceable genres for their sound. Deee-Lite would primarily build on the early house sound, particularly popular among the gay scene. World Clique is fine, but not nearly as fun as the hit track Groove Is in the Heart.

Umm I thought these guys were a one hit wonder? I think I’m not wrong, but this was better than I expected. Some solid dance tracks, sort of had some Happy Mondays Step On vibes mixed with Funkadelic/P-Funk, a little quirky with goofy confidence. Groove Is In The Heart holds up surprisingly well, that Q-Tip cameo hits and sort of connects the dots of Deee-Lite and A Tribe Called Quest which is maybe not a link I ever really made in my head. Fun album overall.

I have heard Groove is the Heart but had no idea who Deee-Lite really was. Great dance music. Love it!

Not my thing

My only previous knowledge of Deee-Lite was the song Groove is in the Heart, a song so atrocious I’m pretty sure I would wake from a coma to turn it off. So when I saw this album pop up, I was sceptical. “Perhaps that song isn’t representative of the rest of their music” I thought, reluctantly hitting play. No, they seem capable of reaching the same lows consistently and without effort. The same caterwauling vocals, aggressive and irritating music, and headache inducing sounds were present in the first few songs. And then I gave up. Life is too short and too precious to spend any of it listening to Deee-Lite. Score: 1/5

The Beatles broke up in disgrace after hearing this album

Seems like I was meant to spend the majority of my weekend listening to dance music. Everything I said two days ago, and in any other review of a dance album still works here. Although, after hearing the first two songs on this, I had hoped that maybe I found something cool. I enjoyed the vibe they were giving off, and thought this was a dance record that had a more hip-hop centered sound to it. But once I got to track three, I realized it sounded a lot like track two. And track four sounded a lot like track three. And so on and so forth. There is a lot of repetition here, and it wears itself out very fast. I like that the main vocalist featured here is a woman, as opposed to the usual. But that doesn’t mean I actually enjoy her vocals. Like most things on this, they outstay their welcome in my mind pretty quickly. I initially appreciated the quirkiness of them, but it’s not something I can tolerate for nearly 50 minutes. I guess you could consider this band a one-hit wonder. As Groove Is in the Heart is pretty much the only thing they’re known for. It’s easily their most popular song. And I’m willing to bet that’s more because of the Q-Tip feature than not. Honestly the last thing I was expecting to hear on this. And of course it’s good, because it’s Q-Tip. But I’m not sure how they managed to get him for this record. The song is good, but not amazing. And his relatively brief verse being the highlight really strengthens that opinion for me. Sadly this is another dance album that I just couldn’t get fully into. Rating: 5/10

Happy and bouncy House music. Has the eternally epic Groove is in the Heart featuring Bootsie and Q-Tip and was a personal favorite. The whole album contains an effervescent mix of dance, disco, R&B, and hip hop. A pleasant listen.

This is #day117 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... sometimes, just looking at the album's year of release, you can predict what's under the cover. In this case, it's the 90s, so... house, alternative dance, electronica? You bet. But does this equal quality? Not really, especially given the sheer number of similar acts and sounds from that era. World Clique by Deee-Lite isn't an exception. I’m giving it a 2 out of 5 and, again, I’m honestly not sure how this album ended up on the list. Looking forward to #day118.

Groove Is in the Heart is definitely a banger. How do you make a slide whistle sound cool? I don't know, but they did it. Having Bootsy Collins play bass for you sure doesn't hurt either. The rest of the album doesn't really compare to it to be honest. I didn't not enjoy it, but I think I would enjoy it more as a live piece. It doesn't feel much like an album you should be sitting down to while listening. Definitely recommend a headset for this one as well, as there is a lot of play in the sound. Overall I think Groove brings the album up to 3 stars. Without it, it would be 2.

I am definitely not the target audience for this type of music, so that'll influence my rating a bit. This is a forgettable album. The beats were good, but the repetitiveness is what gets me. By the end of every song, I was glad it was over so I can listen to something else. Is it a 1/5? Probably not, it's not like I despised the songs. I was just sick of them by the end, and it does have some good parts. 2/5

Perhaps one of the more unusual albums on this list. It was disco, techno, electronica. World Clique was a great album to power walk to. The beat was consistently good and wasn't repetitive or boring. Lyrics were probably the weakest aspect of World Clique; most lyrics were on the basic side. Vocals didn't wow me either. And that's fine to an extent because the music is what carried the album.

This album is very turn-of-the-decade electronic dance, and while I feel like it hasn't exactly aged the best, I still enjoyed it. I think with early electronic dance type music, it was very easy for a lot of it to sound repetitive not only within a song but from song to song. However, this album does a pretty good job of staying unique from song to song and not droning on and "lulling" the listener.

This is definitely an album that helped house music reach a broader and more accessible audience. It’s one of those albums where you really had to be there at the time to fully appreciate the impact it made. Without that context, it might just come across as run of the mill pop and dance music from the early 90s.

Other bands have eponymous songs (e.g., the song “Black Sabbath” by the band Black Sabbath, off the album Black Sabbath), but something about adding “theme” to it really irritates me. Like it’s this classic motif we’re all supposed to know already. “Oh is that the Dee-Lite Theme?” I ask. “Yes,” you reply testily, as if I’d just bugged you to explain, yet again, which animal the flute represents in Peter and the Wolf. In fifth grade—probably around the time I learned about Peter and the wolf, honestly—one of my classmates gave a speech on “how to give a good speech.” And it was fine, but with that topic, you really have to nail the speech, which is what my teacher told my classmate. This memory comes floating back to me as I hear someone intone “I just wanna hear a good beat” repeatedly over a pretty bland beat. Beat-wanter, heal thyself.

I can see why this was popular in the 90s as it was very radio and commercial friendly 'dance' music. of course it goes without saying, it made one of the best songs when I was growing up, groove is in the heart. overall, good work.

So many listens, back in the day. I still know it by heart. It’s lost a tiny bit of its charm but it’s still a fiver.

Very 90s I dont love it

Wow, feel like this album takes some big swings. When it does hit the ball....it sure does fly out of the park but there are some complete misses there too. There were even times listening to one song had both 5* and 1* moments. "Groove Is In Your Heart" is a song I have loved for years and it still is absolutely amazing to me. I think with that alone I have to give it at least a 3, but there is enough in there that genuinely was good that I think this merits a 4*

This one has guilty pleasure written all over it. I can't in good conscience give such a ridiculous album 5 stars but it's definitely earned 4 by being so fun. 'Groove is in the Heart' is obviously familiar and by far the best track but the rest is better than expected. The clashing color scheme and charmingly obnoxious fashion sense give some hint of what you're about to hear. Some absurdity and avant garde filled the void of the music scene as the 80s turned into the 90s. Deee-Lite couldn't have emerged at any other time but it's a fun reminder of that brief era. If you're not having fun with this one, you may be taking things too seriously.

Honestly reminds me of music that would be for kids except in the year 1990. Music was fine, just a very prominent early 90s sound. 5/10.

I'm not sure what the purpose of this album was unless these were songs and styles that set the standard for everyone else? Every song felt like everything I've heard from the 90's. Sort of stuff that was on commercials on TV or kids shows as they danced. If this was the pioneer of that then cool, but something tells me it isn't. Groove is in the Heart is a classic though.

Really great album! May have vaguely heard this name before but didn't know what to expect, some really great electronic/dance stuff here, at times felt some early hip hop bounce in here too. Keeping quite a few from this one, really glad to have heard it. Favorite tracks: Good Beat, Try Me On, What Is Love, ESP, Who Was That, Build That Bridge. Album art: Funky shot of three funky people with a starry backdrop. Very hip, very vibrant. Fitting. 4/5

Love this album. It brings back so many memory. And it still holds up

Pretty forgettable 90s house album with one mammoth hit on it. I can imagine Dimery getting to about 700 hundred albums and exhausting all the music he’s ever listened to. He turns to his wife and says “who did that groove is in the heart song?”.

Had no idea this album was as much fun as it is otherwise I would have had it listened to years ago

Okay dance music, I guess. I find the music to be very formulaic. Start out with a synth line for one measure, add a bass line in the next measure, add symbols then drums in subsequent measures. Different lines, lyrics and sometimes different tempos so the songs don’t sound alike. Ho hum. Not impressed.

Gets a bit samey after a while. Don’t think I’ll ever seek this out again, however I can appreciate that it was a piece of music of its time.

Was enjoying and got activated like a sleeper agent when I heard Groove is in the Heart. Could’ve sworn it’s in a FIFA game but couldn’t find it

Firstly, Apple Music has this categorized as rock music. I'm not entirely sure *what* it is -- Funk? Disco? -- but it is *not* rock. With that out of the way...it was quite nice. Not anything I'd seek out, but very upbeat, groovy, and bouncy.

Tons of groove on this album. Not my normal listen but this was thoroughly enjoyable.

I was hoping to like this more, as Groove Is In The Heart is such a great 90's bop, but overall I kind of found this album pretty bland and boring.

Mostly ok, but a bit long. I hadn't heard anything other than Groove is in the Heart. I didn't mind it, but it's also not really my thing. 2.5/5

Okay. I have a head full of a cold, not slept well. It's possible I'm just not in the mood for this. I can't see myself returning to it. It's slightly irritating, but is obviously performed well. I'm not a fan of the vocals - too showy.

Generically 90s. Replace this required listening with a Now That’s What I Call Music 90’s and you’ll be fine
