Reviews (page 5 of 14)
I have always enjoyed this one. Just a really good, fun album, which is very consistent. It documents a band that was starting to stretch their legs to great results. The only knock I'll give is the creepy lyrics on Run for your life.
I was so excited to get this as it is actually my favorite album by my favorite band. This is my pick for the best Beatles album as it just is so consistent and the vibes are amazing. Drive My Car is a great intro but the album goes to the next level with Norwegian Wood. The use of the sitar adds an amazing sound giving this song a mystical aura. John, Paul, and George all have amazing outings showing them in the prime. Even Ringo's one song is pretty good (Sad Ringo 😢). Out of all of these songs "In My Life" is my favorite. It is a beautiful retrospective of life that ends with focusing on the present and the person who gives your life meaning. It has a melancholic tone which gives it way more depth and a perfect representation of all of life. It's why this song is my favorite of all time. Favorite songs: All of them Rubber Soul is a personal album for me and whenever I feel down I put it on. Listening to it one more time, I appreciate it even more.
Fantastic album
My absolute favorite Beatles album. Before the full on psychedelic wackiness. Exquisitely written and arranged songs and chill vibes (“Run For Your Life” notwithstanding).
Insert beats platitudes here
My second favorite Beatles album. You Won't See Me is perfect, as is I'm Looking Through You and that deep breath in Girl. What a great album.
this is literally my favorite beatles album lol
Ah yes, Rubber Soul. I prefer other Beatles albums but giving it a 4 would be lying. I lied before too, this is my favorite Beatles record
Love this record some of my fav Beatles songs on it. Michelle If I needed someone
Unpolished sound 5/5
A fantastic record showing the increasing experimentation of the Beatles (such as the harpsichord piece within “In My Life”). The shift from a teeny, pop band to a mature rock group was in process.
Great album
All time
Hell yes, my second favourite Beatles album. This really was a huge turning point in their career, after this they stopped being just another generic 60s pop rock band, and became one of if not the most important band in music history. And to this day it still holds up as one of the best albums the decade has to offer.
happy soul
I love The Beatles So many great songs on this album. Great vibes and a sitar, what more can you want 5 ⭐️
What an absolutely fun album. Every song on here is just such a joy to listen to, they really know how to give the exact right dose of every element of their music, and it's just so damn catchy a lot of the time. This isn't my first listen of this album, but it surely isn't even close to my last. It's so good, it makes me wonder how in the world the 60s pop sound ever became less popular, although on second thought, perhaps the Beatles did it so well no one else wanted to try! I've never been this excited so far in the challenge to really dig into an group's discography, and since I've only barely listened to the other albums from the Beatles, I'm really looking forward into going into it more blindly.
God what a great album. Just exceptional song after exceptional song
It's interesting getting all of these Beatles albums in a non-chronological order. The group underwent a stylistic and musical evolution in such a short amount of time that it's almost fitting to listen to their work out of order due to their mostly self-contained nature. "Rubber Soul" is an album that surprisingly hasn't graced my ears much too, so I should be fortunate to listen to a majority of this for the first time. This album doesn't get too crazy, but it still has quite the range if that makes sense. You can hear the soul inspiration all throughout as well as some precursors to the psychedelic rock sound that would dominate in the following years (AKA the fellas started to dabble with drugs during the recordings). "Rubber Soul" feels like an inflection point in the Beatles discography and overall artistry when you consider what came before and what followed. This didn't blow my mind or anything, but this is still a very solid album from start to finish. Paul and John equally shine as songwriters and the production sounds clean while not being overdone. Helps that this is a fairly easy listen with every song falling in-between two and three and half minutes. Feels like a mid 9ish/10 to me but I'll round up.
The Beatles sound kind of whiny but I still have to give this a five
Adding this one to the rotation for sure. Easy to see why this is the favorite album for many!
fire. no notes . love this album forever and ever
This album is notable for a few reasons. It signals a definite change in direction for a band whose main audience was primarily scores of screaming teenage girls who adored their pop love songs. Secondly was the new recording equipment being developed which allowed for multi-tracks and layering, something the Beatles began to experiment with heavily in their productions. This album pre-dates the Beach Boys 'Animal Sounds' by about 6 months and doesn't rely as heavily on the technology as that album or 'Sgt. Pepper's', but marks the beginning of MY personal favorite branch on the Beatles tree.
A clear bridge from the Hard Days Night era to the Sgt Pepper era. Songs are juicier and take bigger risks. Songwriting is more differentiated between the two mains.
Pop rock. An album full of classics, and plenty of diversity in sounds. It's prime Beatles, not much more to say that hadn't been said before. Will revisit. Strong 4.5/5
Every song is a banger, released in 1965 it sounds way way ahead of its time. (i.e. progression in Michelle). Very easy 5/5.
Transcendent. 5/5. I've never heard a song that bends my ears like in my life.
Ein Klassiker. Ein Ansporn für Größeres. So war es bei den Beach Boys. So entstand Pet Sounds. Ich gehöre zur Beach Boys Fraktion und doch ist es ganz einfach fantastisch, wie die Beatles mit vorbildlicher Präzision höchste Qualität, kreative Arrangements, wunderbare, melodische Songs gezaubert haben. Tolles Album.
nearly makes my top 3 beatles albums. What Goes On and Run For Your Life are the stinkers but everything else is kind of perfect. 4.5 but no halfsies here so rounding to a 5
The perfect mix of Old Beatles and New Beatles.
This is where it all started changing. Not only that but it has two awesome Lennon songs: Nowhere Man and In My Life. Fortunately the nasty misogynistic song is at the end so it's easy to skip.
The first truly great Beatles album, and one of their most consistent from front to back.
This was the album that saw the Beatles transition from a jangly Merseybeat band into something much more ambitious. With the help of George Martin, they started playing with different instruments (sitars and fuzzed out bass), genres (country!) and studio effects. Lyrically they were a long way from hand holding romance with songs about dysfunctional relationships and existential angst, and the still shocking Run For Your Life as an album closer.
Maybe my favorite Beatles album.
One of my fav beatles. Norwegian, Michelle, what goes on.
I have gone on the record saying that the Beatles are one of the most overrated bands to ever exist but after learning about some of their history and relisting to a lot of their music they really were one of the greatest band of all time they did was super new and innovative for the time they advanced a lot of, recording technology and studio experimentation and not to mention worldwide success is hard to deny. They have had and continued to have such an important impact on modern music and for those reasons I give this album a teir. I was going to get an S teir, However, upon the second listen some of the songs got repetitive and annoying.
My favourite Beatles album for a variety of reasons but mostly because it seems to me to signal their shift into the weird. Also a great excuse to use the term proto-psychedelia. Norwegian Wood is John's Blackbird and is an obvious album highlight along with Nowhere Man. Strong George and Ringo showings too. Plenty more to say but will leave it at that. Wait don't forget about John's pained hssssssts in Girl - so good.
There's always a couple tracks that only the Beatles could get away with, but overall still amazing.
Everything The Beatles made is 10/10.
So many good songs on this one too. The Beatles really are that good.
That was really lovely. Listened to a lot of this with my son. Great music lasts the test of time and this did it with flying colours. Rubber Soul is one of my favourite Beatles albums.
Not a bad effort, wonder what became of these fellas.
Not my favourite Beatles album but still absolutely outstanding, captures their transition to more psychedelic work. Still a 5 for me!
dobre do puszczenia w tle
one of my favorite albums
Great album, idk about ending it on "run for your life" but hey
One of my all time favourites. When comparing this to their previous 5 albums, you can really see the monumental changes in their music process. Experimentation is on the rise as they expand their instrumentation, concepts and song structures. I find that the progression from Help! to Rubber Soul to Revolver perfectly demonstrates how The Beatles went from just another Liverpool band, to one of the greats. Favourites: Michelle, In My Life, Norwegian Wood, I'm Looking Through You, If I Needed Someone, Nowhere Man, Drive My Car, Girl (all of them really haha)
One of the many great Beatles albums.
Classic Beatles; a real turning point in their discography and the first one where it's absolutely great throughout Production still sounds awesome today and loads of classics on it
For me this album is just left out of my top 3 favorite Beatle’s albums. I’d probably go 1. Revolver, 2. Sgt Pepper, 3. Abbey Road, and Rubber Soul firmly at 4. This album serves as the clear demarcation line before they started exploring more experimental and psychedelic sounds in the latter half of their run as a band. While the sound on here isn’t as groundbreaking as some of their stuff to come, I still think this is a fantastic sounding album. Having a few albums under their belt, the songwriting on here is a little more refined and polished version of their classic sound. Just an easy listen from start to finish. Fav Songs: Drive My Car Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Nowhere Man Michelle What Goes On I’m Looking Through You In My Life
This album holds its place in history as the Beatles’ last stand of a more classic rock n roll sound before they begin to lean more into psychedelic influences and sonic experimentation. In that sense, this is some of the best execution of that sound possible. There’s a few unremarkable tracks but overall this is the peak of what 60s pop/rock could hope to achieve. Catchy, fun, effective from top to bottom.
Not their best but there are some amazing songs on here
Classic Beatles. Excellent!
It’s up there as one of the best
Middle career Beatles, in transition to being considered “serious artists.” The first proper Beatles album I bought so I have a lot of affection for it. Maybe their most laid-back and pastoral album, very folk rock. Best song: Nowhere Man
Rub a Sole. Fish fingers.
duh!!!
Those mop top lads from merseyside have only bloody gone and done it again!
C’mon, an easy five. I’m all for “the Beatles discover weed” era and the gem of an album it produced. Deeper and more introspective songwriting combined with a growing appreciation of leveraging musical instruments and motifs that expand beyond the “traditional” subject matter and song craft as had been popular to that point? All for it, and welcome to the future.
Classic album, every song is great
My favorite beatles album
The first of their truly classic albums. Unfortunate choice for final track though.
So amazing classic Beatles tracks- In My Life, Michelle, Nowhere Man, I’m Looking Through Me…
Enough said.
If it isn't my favourite Beatles album.... Call me a satisfied customer
Great stuff. A couple misses on this album for me, especially the abysmal What Goes On.
Wondering if I, for a change, should and could rate a Beatles album with less than 5. Just to see what it feels like, for the kicks. To spice things up. And maybe even to try out pretending I'm listening to this band's work for the very first time. But it's not this one, again.
Rubber Soul Hard to know what to write that we haven’t spoken about or has been written a million times by a million people. So, I’ve been trying to remember when I bought this album and memories of first hearing it. My parents had the 1987 CD release of Revolver which I pinched off them some time in 94/95. They also had the red and blue albums on vinyl, which I recorded onto cassettes for my walkman and my midi hifi system. Then the Anthology TV show at the end of 1995 sent my Beatle fandom into overdrive and I started to collect their albums. I had the Anthology 1 album when it came out, and I think had that before I had any other albums. I also had a little CD sized book going through all their albums song by song, so I had read about all their songs many many times before hearing them. I do remember getting Rubber Soul and talking about the song The Word with someone in my French A-Level class. I think it was summer, which would put it around May in 1996 or 1997, most likely from Virgin Records or HMV in Southampton (don't look for them, they're not there anymore). The red album had 6 songs from RS plus We Can Work it Out and Day Tripper and I think I might also have had Anthology 2 before RS, so I think it probably was May 97. I have very strong memories of buying The White Album and Sgt Pepper in HMV in Oxford Street in the summer of 96 in the middle of A-levels, (and reading the booklets and looking at the CDs on the train home, just desperate to be able to hear the songs I’d read about), and I think I would have bought those before Rubber Soul. 25+ years of accrued listening makes it hard to recall listening to it the first time, but I remember loving Think for Yourself and The Word when I got it, I think a lot to do with the bass, and in general the clear advances in sound, production, songs and lyrics from the pre Help era. I also thought about the line George says in Anthology about Rubber Soul and Revolver being part 1 and part 2 of the same album as not ringing true for me, (and although something like If I Needed Someone I could see on Revolver) but they are both very different. I think I remember liking I’m Looking Through You and You Won’t See Me as well. It still feels like a summer album, from buying it in the summer. I loved the cover too, I think 65/66 might be their best look, grown out Beatle cuts and cool jackets and sunglasses. I love the photos from the RS and Revolver recording sessions. Like all their albums this has bought me so much joy over the years, and one of the beauties of Beatles albums is that you get into different songs and albums at different times. I was listening to RS a lot in February this year as I had a mini obsession with If I Needed Someone, I just kept wanting to hear it. It’s also tricky to pick out individual songs as I love them all, but there are moments across the whole album that I love and still surprise and delight me, despite how famous, obvious or well know they are. The bass and piano on Drive My Car, the sitar and guitar doubled on Norwegian Wood, the skittish hi hat and fills on You Won’t See Me, vocal harmonies on Nowhere Man, the fuzz bass on Think For Yourself, the bass on The Word, the Gallic touches on Michelle, the jauntiness of What Goes On, the mysteriousness of Girl, the breakdown after ‘You’re not the same!’ on I’m Looking Through you (Ringo plays the Hammond on this!), Ringo’s grandfather clock drumming on In My Life, the upbeat plaintiveness of Wait, the whole of If I Needed Someone. I even like Run for Your Life despite it clearly being the weakest track and feeling like a bit of a throwback to BFS or Help George’s guitar work is great, as usual serving the songs perfectly with little ostentatiousness, but Ringo’s drumming and Paul’s bass are really the stars (after the quality of the songs of course). There’s a bit of debate, but I’m pretty sure his is when Paul started using the Rickenbacker in the studio and probably when they recorded it directly into the mixing desk. It must be the Ric, as the bass is so much clearer in the mix and it sounds very different than previous albums. I think he’s also talked about the Ric and direct injection allowing him to write more melodic bass lines now that they could be heard and that would track with some absolutely superb lines and playing on here. As with all their albums its also brilliantly sequenced, I don't think the track order could be bettered. The brilliance of George Martin (and Norman Smith) is also clear on here, if anyone needed any more proof. I know we have had numerous remasters of Beatles records but just listen to nearly any other album by any of their contemporaries in 1965. Kinda Kinks, The Kink Kontroversy, Rolling Stones No. 2, Out of Our Heads, My Generation - all great albums but the difference in production quality and sound is remarkable. I'd be interested if Giles Martin does Rubber Soul as the demix and remix this year. Obviously there were new mixes of the songs on the red album (plus If I Needed Someone) last year so it would make sense to do the rest of the songs too. Plus there must be some good extra stuff in the vault from the sessions. Of course it’s a 5. Probably still behind Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road and the White Album for me but even their 5th best (or 6th or 7th etc) album is better than the best album by nearly any other band or artist. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐️
It's the Beatles. Funny, my previous album had Cash's cover of In My Life on it.
Monumental achievement. Such a huge leap forward from where they started. Nowhere Man is still amazing.
Everybody talks about the surprise of Sgt. Pepper, but going from Help to Rubber Soul must have made some Beatlemaniacs turn their heads.
The progression in songwriting, experimentation and lyricism from Help! to Rubber Soul is unbelievable. If some should have doubted it earlier, this album made it clear that The Beatles was on track to become the most important group of all time.
For ages, I resisted the Beatles. My parents were of the Punk generation, and so disliked the Beatles on principal, and so never played them, even actively disparaged them. And so, I grew up not just not liking the Beatles, but making the case that they were overrated, like a lot of a certain kind of edgelord little shits. It’s only through my involvement in this project that I’ve actually sat down and started actively listening to the band. And for that I’m glad for two reasons. 1.) I have been introduced to a lot of actually genuinely really good music. 2.) I think that even if I had listened to the Beatles earlier, I wouldn’t have got it. This is good music to discover as an adult. And so I think I have to say it. I am a Beatles fan. It’s not an easy thing to admit. But I like the Beatles. And Rubber Soul is one of my favourite of their albums. It’s the perfect mix of earlier Pop success and experimentation with new and exciting ideas. It’s also got my favourite Beatles song on it, In My Life. Even the disturbing Run For Your Life is inconsequential enough that it doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the rest of the album. So there you go. I’ve been converted. Damn
Favorite Beatles album
- This has insane vibes - Love the focus on guitar here - This is the Beatles I've been looking for
Astonishing. Even the lesser songs on this album are four stars.
This and revolver mark their great transitional albums
Love love love
The fact that this is like the 4th best Beatles album should emphasize how they were truly masters of their craft. 4.7 stars.
Nothing needs to be said here that would even approach or be enough praise one of if not their best Album and needless to say a 5+
My favorite Beatles album. So fucking polished and smooth. A perfect bridge between Beatlemania and the experimental albums that would follow.
What can you say that hasn’t already been said.
I love all Beatles albums from the bottom of my heart, so they most likely will all get 5/5. Maybe a couple will get 4/5 but not this one. This album isn't what I call a perfect album necessarily as there are a few tracks that aren't as strong or noteworthy as others.. (What Goes On, Drive My Car, The Word). Where this album really shines is in the songs that showcase the maturing songwriting and musical capacities of the Beatles at this time in their career. In particular, I am always the most impressed by the songs led by John. "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" features killer song writing, subtle suggestive undertones (not usually featured in Beatles music up until this point) and of course George's first foray into playing the Sitar. "Nowhere Man" has amazing harmonies and wonderful sweet chord progressions typical of the Beatles but with lyrics that are relateable and obscure at the same time. "Girl" captures the deep sorrow of anyone who has loved a girl in such a profound, yet clear way. Mostly illustrating the challenges and pitfalls of such a love rather than something sickeningly sweet. And who can forget that characteristic chorus. "In My Life" is arguably the strongest track on the album and illustrates not only that the Beatles have matured past their pop phase, but that John as a songwriter can be silly and fun but also deep and introspective. This brings us a timeless song that will last through the ages. That's not to say that the other Beatles don't have good contributions. Paul led "You Won't See Me" and "I'm Looking Through You" are always a blast to listen to. "Michelle" is probably the one of the other strong tracks. Pure smooth sweetness. The George songs are alright. Not his best but not his worst either. Amazing harmonies throughout. All in all, this record is amazing and begs mutiple listens through, not simply a one, done, and on to the next. It balances accessibility with adventure, exhibits incredible songwriting, and almost anyone could find something to like about it.
Catch you with another band and that's the end, little girl
The Beatles were always good, but that's when they really started to be great.
A very strong bold underlined flashing glowing 5.
One of the great ones by the Beatles. Lot of nice songs.
The 1st special!
It's crazy that the "not their best" album is still of this quality
One of the few albums my dad didn’t have when I was growing up. Lots to appreciate here.
It's pretty awesome how awesome the Beatles are.
An absolute icon of the beatles discography and of music in general. Trailblazers in their time, ahead of their time and specifically on this album create a new and refreshed sound far from the "beatlemania" boy band sound they developed early. This remains in my personal top 3 of beatles and will remain for a lifetime.
Un disco histórico
I'm just as surprised as you, but I've already listened 4 times and I don't see myself stopping. It's the first Beatles album I've listened to that feels serious, from the heart, and cohesive.
It was around this album that the Beatles started experimenting a LOT more in the studio with how their sound could be shaped. And it was this album that I really got more interested in their stuff. Of course, the first few albums are great. But to me they sounded like a lot of the other bands from that era, doing early 60s pop songs. And they even covered a few, which aren't bad. But their later stuff is just... so great to me. Half of the songs here are just so well-known to anyone who knows anything about the Beatles: "In My Life," "Norwegian Wood," "Drive My Car," "Nowhere Man (probably my favorite)," "Michelle," "I'm Looking Through You," "In My Life." "In My Life" has become such a different song than probably what it was meant to be, and it's been covered by so many, but the Johnny Cash cover sticks out to me only because it changed the song a lot. It didn't make it his own, but it did make it a lot more reflective at the end of the road than (I think) it was intended. Lesser-known songs like "Girl," "Rain," "Think For Yourself"... any band would have killed for songs like these. And these are not even the hits on the album. Just a great album through and through. Why do I love the Beatles? It's pretty much all here.
Side one is the Beatles at their best - sometimes poppy and/or catchy (Drive My Car, You Won't See Me), other times deep and/or skillful (Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Think for Yourself), and other times soft and/or beautiful (Michelle). Side two has some hiccups including the opener What Goes On, a faux country ditty sung by Ringo (he just doesn't do it for me), and Run for Your Life (lyrics are beneath them). Still, there are some really good songs on this side including Girl, I'm Looking Through You, and In My Life (an absolute classic). I'll overlook the hiccups for the sheer importance of this album, both in terms of the Beatles becoming mature artists and making the production of complete albums a key objective for musicians. I love albums and loathe artists who can only produce one-off singles, so I wouldn't have my love and none of us might have this list/book without it.
Such a great album and it's the clear bridge between the Beatles initial pop output and the more sophisticated music of their later albums. Absolute classics across the whole thing: Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Michelle, and In My Life (great song, but major props to the Johnny Cash cover version). Of the less "popular" songs, I really like You Won't See Me, The Word (great groove), and If I Needed Someone (love the atmospheric sound to it). Probably the only negative thing on the album is the lyrics of Run for Your Life - particularly given John Lennon's reputation for being abusive to women. Take that song away and this is an absolutely perfect album. Regardless, Easy 5.
The first Beatles cd I bought, my favorite in my teens, and still one of the greatest today. Every song means something to me. Great stuff.
Yeah. Such a five star!
Of course at my age I've heard all of the classic Beatles songs more times than I can remember. What's nice about listening to individual albums like this all the way through is rediscovering the tracks that aren't played to death on the radio. And realizing just what excellent musicians and songwriters these guys were/are.
Total classic. This is where the Beatles really started to figure it out, in my book. Not my favorite album of theirs, but better than virtually anything else out there in its day.
Classic album. So many super hits.
Amazing album. #3 on my personal list of Beatles albums. My first favorite Beatles song was "In My Life"...such a great song. 5/5
Arguably the Beatles best album.
What could be better ? Sublime
oof. ive not been looking forward to beatles albums. Hard not to rank a 4 or 5. it's just very very listenable. Even moreso than the ones I thought I liked Let it be, e.g.
5.0 Used to be my favourite Beatles album, just an utter masterpiece from start to end. Fave songs: You won't see me, Nowhere man, Michelle, In my Life, Wait, Norwegian wood, Drive my car
Used to be my favourite Beatles album, not sure it is any more but I think it might be the most complete, there isn't a bad song on here, and some of my favourites, Norwegian Wood, In My Life, Nowhere Man.
Excellent and listening on apple pushed some good new to me music that had a similar vibe
John Lennon must've had the craziest pussy
Beatles always get a five. 5/5
One of my favorite albums of all time. Now and always. It’s the perfect intersection of early and late Beatles.
Norwegian Wood and I'm looking through You are my favorite songs on this. It's not as good as sgt pepper in my mind but it looks like they're getting a bit more weird psychedelic stuff on here, but it's just in little accoutrements to the songs. Harrison songs are good, it's a better Ringo one than I would have expected. I'm leaning to a 4 or 4.5 but anticipate I'll come back and rate it higher over time.
I mentioned to my coworker that Rubber Soul was today's album and he asked me where I'd rank that among beatles albums. I told him that's tricky. I love the rolling stones, but there are some really bad rolling stones albums. I love David Bowie, but there are really bad David Bowie albums. There aren't bad Beatles albums. Rubber Soul came when the Beatles were transitioning from the earlier pop rock style to a more experimental kind of music. Let's just say it came out after they met Bob Dylan.
Ah the Beatles. There's something special about music made in this time period. It's a time before producers started throwing effects on every track to "spice it up." Can't go wrong with some good mixing and mastering.
I can’t imagine giving a Beatles album anything but a 5.
Just wonderful. I was 14 when it came out. The start of more sophisticated songwriting, arrangements and production. There needs to be a deluxe box set edition of this. These guys have potential.
Can't be less than 5/5, even if there are (even) better Beatles albums.
I first got into The Beatles as a senior in high school, and I gravitated towards the more psychedelic albums like Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Peppers. To be honest, those were my favorite albums by the band, and I never really gave anything before those albums came out a fair shot. I can't believe how wrong I was about Rubber Soul. All in all, the songs still feel modern and relevant. I don't understand how The Beatles could make hit after hit after hit. Best Songs: Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, The Word, Michelle, Girl, In My Life Worst Songs: NA
Omg! 2 Beatles in like 5 days?! Hard to rate, could be a 5 but there are better Beatles albums.
It’s been a long time since I listened to this one all the way through in one sitting. Very chill and relaxing. It lives up to the hype and lore. It’s crazy how artists like the Beatles (and the Stones) could just crank out a solid album annually or faster in that time period. Giving it full prop of stars.
Love
Classic 5/5 5/5: Norwegian Wood, Michelle, Girl, In My Life, Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, I'm Looking Through You, You Won't See Me, 4.5/5: Think For Yourself, The Word, What Goes On, Wait, If I Needed Someone, Run For Your Life
Most every track sings. Run for Your Life seems eerily out of sync with the rest of the album thematically and certainly darkens the tone on a fairly chill album.
Turns out the Beatles are good, should tell some people
The Beatles. The greatest group in the world with much of the best music ever written. Rubber Soul was my favorite Beatles album until I heard Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in its entirety. So many of the greatest Beatles works on Rubber Soul, and you can really see it as a transition point in their songwriting and musical approach from the frenetic pop of their earlier years to more diverse, thought-provoking, psychedelic, and experimental music of their later studio years. Doesn’t hurt that some of my favorite Beatles songs of all time are here, “Norwegian Wood” being a long-time favorite. Also “Girl,” “Michelle,” “In My Life,” and “Baby You Can Drive My Car.” Just listen to the bassline on that last one critically. The only thing marring this album is the jealous, violent ex-boyfriend with murderous intent of “Run For Your Life”. I’d rather hear the plan to go after the new boyfriend than the girl- doesn’t sit well at all. It’s like no wonder she left you, dude. “Hey Joe” by Jimi Hendrix is another song in this line of thinking. Overall a tremendous album. No hesitation rating this 5⭐️
I hadn’t heard much of this one before. I think it’s gonna be among my new jams
Another classic album from the Beatles that showed them really starting to flex their songwriting ability. So many good songs off of this album, but the best has to be Michelle, what a tune!
Consistently voted as the Beatles 'Best Album'. Chock full of strong songs, 'Drive my car', 'Norwegian Wood' and 'Day tripper', to name but a few. Beautifully recorded by George Martin and the sound is wonderful. So 60's. I've just had a look and this album was recorded in around a month, then released, just over a month later in December 1965. Phenomenal. Brilliant album.
So solid. No weak tracks
Ah, man, Rubber Soul. The turning point in The Beatles. A pinnacle moment in their career. Beatlemania is now over. The happy-go-lucky Beatles are gone. They released this and from then on their music completely changed. An absolute MASTERPIECE. Perfect lyrics, melodies, instrumentation. an incredibly easy listen.
Already had heard this one. A classic. The Band entering their second stage. Paul speaks French with a British accent lol.
Not my favorite beatles album but definitely a good one
One of my favorite Beatles Albums (so far). Right before this project I was making my way through their discography and this was the last one I listened to. This album also holds a special place in my heart because it was the one I listened to the day I found out I was becoming a Dad.
Beautiful music
I bought a copy of this when I was 11 - which is 42 years ago. I still find it wonderful.
The first great Beatles album post the Beatlemania era, and it's grown on me a lot over the years. There's a few outright duds, What Goes On and Run for Your Life are dogshit, but the highs are super fucking high. Lennon was on a roll here, Nowhere Man, Norwegian Wood, and of course, In My Life, are all absolutely incredible. Meanwhile Paul and George are doing pretty decent rock and folk numbers to fill the rest out. This is the Spring to Revolver's Summer, a promise of brighter, better days ahead. 14/02/24
Most underrated Beatles album maybe?
There is something about the music of this album. The Beatles' lyrics were better on Sgt. Pepper, their experimentation better on Revolver or the White Album, their flat-out intensity better on Meet the Beatles or Hard Day's Night - yet this album seems to be a masterpiece of transition. They're not a pure pop group anymore, yet they have not entered pure psychedelia either. It's this beautiful point on the scale that makes this album what it is. Some lyrics reveal the Beatles' first lunges into meaningful songwriting. The pure beauty of this collection of pop songs can hardly be compared. In a sense, this is the Beatles' Pet Sounds - a capsule into a beautiful balance between mature expression and popular music, with some of their most beautiful melodies ever.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP YEAH! Oh damn. Back in the day when I binged the Beatles for 6 months, this was my favorite album; it felt like their first departure from the boy band look/sound and they'd stopped touring at this point. Let's see how it holds up now for me. Fuck it, easy 5* for me. Instantly in a good mood with Drive my car. Norwegian wood just has a great guitar groove. You won't see me: I was always more inclined toward Paul songs. Nowhere man: obsessed. Why did I just praise Paul, when this and In my life are in this album?? Think for yourself: even when I'm not a fan of early George songs, this is still great and catchy Michelle: so lovely. Also all the harmonies in the album are so on point. Girl: another John great All my life is such a GOAT track. All good, 5*.
Chefs kiss!
No great singles but one great album.
This is a brilliantly done album. All of the Beatles' albums are pretty spot on. They are truly one of the best bands of all time.
Это или Sgt. Pepper?
Was wondering how much longer it would be until I got a Beatles album in the generator
Not much to say that hasn't already been said about this album, but it's a very special one to me and one of my favorites by the Beatles.
wonderful as always!!
An all time classic. Easy 5 stars!
Of course 😂
4.9/5 Best Track: Nowhere Man
One of my favorites in my collection.
Part of two albums that changed rock. The evolution of Rubber Soul into Revolver crushes. This album has amazing lyrics and instrumentation.
Great album. Fantastic production. Lots of great and innovative songwriting that the Beatles had never attempted before.
I was expecting more songs like Norwegian Wood. But once I got over that disappointment I liked the pop rockiness of the album. Still don’t like “Drive My Car” much.
4.5 rounded up
this was really where the beatles started to change their style and become revolutionary, amazing
I want to give it a 4.5 which rounds up to 5. I dont love it as much as abbey road but i like it more than sgt pepper :)
hard not to give a 5 star, the Beatles with several classic songs!
Their best in my opinion
Day25 - this is an easy one. other than michelle which i personally don’t like this is a classic that everyone should hear
Album 85 and my first Beatles album is possibly my favourite after Abbey Road! I don't need to write about how Rubber Soul marks the first real sign of their transition from an incredible rock 'n' roll band to the creative behemoth they became in the latter half of their career. That's been done to death so I will just list some elements I love about Rubber Soul personally: In My Life: inward gazing and pensive unlike many of Lennon's Beatles songs. Amazing and a funeral staple for a reason Vocal harmonies: obviously lots of Beatles songs have this but some of Rubber Soul's are up there.. I love the backing vocals on If I Needed Someone, Wait, You Won't See Me, The Word, I could go on Some great work from Harrison.. I like the lead guitar on Drive My Car and assume he's playing sitar on Norwegian Wood. The experimentation on that track is subtle, but they never did anything for the sake of it. The sense of cheekiness comes through, e.g. the inhaling on Girl or lyrics of Drive My Car. They were truly unafraid to do what they wanted.. Run For Your Life's theme comes into that, albeit it's slightly problematic. I could go on for ages here but it's 10/5
What is there to even say
honest and true bangers
Easy 5. I mean on importance alone there isnt this list without this album. Plus its full of hits. I love this one. In my life, girl, what goes on, norwegian wood 🔥
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Prime Beatles.
One of my favorite artists. Love all their songs, even the odd ones. Really classic album that everyone should hear at least once in their lifetime.
Dutifully relistened to this album as a complete work, not out of obligation but as an act of contemplation. It has my all time favorite Beatles song (In My Life) and I know every tune pretty much by heart. But to listen to it as a whole? Brought all manner of fresh feelings. Love love love this album.
Run for your life er et catchy nummer men øøøøøhh wtf? Er der nogen kontekst eller er det bare sådan John Lennon var??
Fantastic.
Weaker than anything from the '66-'69 run, but contains some of their best bops (Norwegian Wood, In My Life, I'm Looking Through You)
No where man is gold
Loveeeeed it. Aps classic
another Beatles classic
I mean... what can I say, it's The Beatles after all. Of course, there are some songs that aren't absolutely top (S) tier but I don't that anyone can do a full 10/10 album. Also, it really helps knowing the songs because it makes you a bit biased when rating them but some of the songs sound so good that even if it was my first time listening to them, I would've still enjoyed them. There aren't that many guitar solos, but I love the ta ta Ta Ta TA TA Ta Ta ta ta bit towards the end of Girl. Compared to some of the albums that we have gotten the last few days, this is amazing.
Rubber Soul is the reason this project exists. It the first real “album” ever created. I don’t think it’s the Beatles best and I’m torn on a 5 star rating. It is the bridge between the early Beatles stealing African American music and actually changing music on their own. Yesterday I had the Kinks, it makes me wonder how the kinks could even release Something Else By The Kinks, which is basically a rip of the Beatles but with worse songs and production. There are some masterpieces on Rubber Soul, Norwegian Wood, You can’t see me, I’m Looking Though You and obviously In My Life but overall Rubber Soul is more important as an album then it is great. Rubber Soul why we are doing this 9.0/10
The best band in the world doesn't have off days. The hits are big, the non-hits are classic beatlesy rock and roll/blues.
Great album. Holds up, but funny how dated it sounds for being so innovative at the time. I'd like this in mono, as intended, but it's hard to find. 4.5
My favourite Beatles album so far I think. Favourite tracks: the whole thing is awesome.
Any album that has “In My Life” is a great album.
Classic
This album was always my favourite Beatles album. An easy 5 score especially because of the stylistic variety between the songs. And yet that variety does not take away a cohesion.
A clear turning point for the Fab Four, as they transitioned out of Beatlemania into the most important bands to ever do it. Like most of their albums from this point on, this one is loaded with timeless songs. John shines especially bright on this album. And for me, it really doesn’t get much better than ‘In My Life’ from a songwriting perspective. Easy 5.
saw someone saying this was the greatest album of all time, which, ok, no, slow your roll. it could be the best beatles album but idk, they've put out some solid releases and this album has some serious peaks and valleys. it starts strong with drive my car and norwegian wood, then there are like four meh songs before it really hits its stride. there's a bit more filler towards the end and it ends on a good note with run for your life. john has some lyrics in run for your life about wanting to murder women which seem oddly prescient, and paul's diss track for his girlfriend at the time in I'm looking through you is super petty, but that song sounds really cool otherwise. what a strange collection of tracks. favorites: drive my car, norwegian wood, Michelle, what goes on, girl, I'm looking through you, in my life, run for your life
I really love the rhythm section on this. The addition of sitar was cool and Lennons vocals really shine. Not one of my most listened to Beatles albums but one I will now never skip. Back half of the album is amazing. Highlights for me are: 1. Girl 2. Run for your life 3. Wait
This is probably my top 3 Beatles album. Love this album it’s so good Top tracks: Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), Michelle, I’m Looking Through You, In My Life
One of my favorite albums as a kid.
An album full of jams. I under the whole ‘Beatle Mania’ thing now. If I were a basic straight girl in the ‘60s, I would go feral for the Beatles.
Fire
Classic Beatles
10
A fun look at the past, music was much simpler in that album.
Another excellent Beatles album!
Agree quite a bit with the top review here lol. Not my favorite Beatles album, but still a ton of killer songs, and probably where they truly began to shine. Call it a 4.7.
I am very surprised… but I loved it. A few songs were “ear worms” for several days !
This was my first Beatles record I bought. Maybe the five stars has a tinge of nostalgia, who is to say. I stand by it though.
Rubber Soul + Revolver is likely one of my oldest digital playlists. Way pre-dating actual Beatles available on streaming. 5/5
Well loved album
A classic and one of their best albums.
I am not sure if I ever listened to this album completely start to finish - a very enjoyable listen. No misses on the whole album.
Probably my favourite Beatles as an entire album, because it's the only one I put on routinely with the intent to play the whole thing. Lots of fairly straightforward songs that show off just how good they are as a band/recording artists at this point. At a basic level disregarding the songs I just love how the instruments sound on most of these tracks. The hard L/R pan with drums in one speaker vocals in the other is very cool. Love it on What Goes On (which I love everything else about also). music: appreciated. (⌐❂ ̮ ❂)
I drive
One of my favourite albums of all time.
The Beatles! This album is one of my favorite ones!
Rubber Soul marked the transition from Beatlemania sensation to the beginning of their experimental period, expanding on this on their subsequent album Revolver. A mix of soundscapes, from heartfelt ballads like Paul's Michelle, the very Byrds'-like If I Needed Someone, to John's masterpieces Norweigian Wood and In My Life, to Ringo's vocals in the rockabilly sounding number What Goes On, and a more psychedelic sound in Think For Yourself. This was my first listen to the whole album despite knowing many of the songs. It's just such a amazing set of tunes. In My Life remains my favorite tune, but Paul's You Won't See Me and George's If I needed Someone are new favorites.
We're going to Strawberry Fields with this one 🗣️🗣️
I really enjoy this Beatles album.
Surprise
Greatest album with some of my favourite songs.
But seriously, "Drive My Car", "You Won't See Me", "Nowhere Man", "The Word", and those are just the choice picks of Side A. Side B has "I'm Looking Through You', "In My Life", and "Run For Your Life", so for those counting along at home, that's 7 classic rock staples. It truly changed the game musically, laying the foundations for what would come later, and influencing everyone else to be better... Without this we don't get Beach Boys "Pet Sounds, we don't get Velvet Underground, we don't get evolved pop music... Add in the fact this album was thrown together in around 90 days from start of the writing process after their 1965 August tour of America to pressed vinyl being in people's hands in early December, just an unreal creation in that span of time, and it was their second album of 1965 after "Help!", and 3rd album released within 365 days after 1964's "Beatles For Sale!" was released barely a year before. These mad kids were just chugging along like a well oiled machine, cracking out classic after classic like many normal people draw breath. Despite me gushing over this album, it's not my favourite Beatles album, its barely in the top 5, but it's still an absurdly easy 5 stars and it's about as filthy as the fuzzy bass on "Think For Yourself". It's almost perfect, but I can't abide with "Michelle", a wholly terrible song from Paul McCartney that's only matched by "Ob‐La‐Di, Ob‐La‐Da" and "Wonderful Christmastime"...
What is there to say about the most important rock and roll band ever? There are people who like the Beatles and people who don’t. But I think among people that love the Beatles, there is no bad Beatles album. Only a ranking of those which are more superior to the others. This is my favorite Beatles album, though I think it often falls more towards the middle of the pack for most. But these are the songs that I learned to sing harmony to. And songs that I learned how to write songs imitating. Even if you don’t like the Beatles, whatever you do like, is more than likely following the template, set by this band and on these songs. I would guess that though it’s the first, this won’t be the last Beatles album encountered with this project. What a great start though.
Rubber Soul is a funny one isn't it. There are no absolute, stone-cold, stand out tracks that would get in the top 10 Beatles songs (arguably In My Life, although it's a little overdone). But it's very consistent album and marks such a great leap forwards. Even the Ringo song isn't that bad. One thing that really came across on this album is that it's quite angry across the board. You Won't See Me, Norwegian Wood and the regrettable Run For Your Life are all of a piece really. I'm sort of criticising it, but it's obviously still amazing and brilliant and scrapes into the fives.
Forgot how many classic songs are on this album! Don't get much better!
First or second favorite Beatles album
Далеко не самый любимый альбом Beatles, но даже он хорош. Да, много песен состарилось, но есть даже сейчас сияющие Norwegian wood, Girl, In my Life,неплохие Michelle и I'm looking through you. Чертяги, хороши ведь!
For me, this is the point where the Beatles became really interesting. They finally had artistic freedom and they used it to really push through music that was both more mature, more eclectic and more experimental than anything they'd done before. This is no longer just a band for screaming teenage girls. It might not be as impressive as later works but this is truly the album that launched the second half of their careers. There's not a bad song on here.
I prefer the Revolver and post-Revolver Beatles, but this is still a great album. They were still in the midst of transitioning from simple love songs to more complex songs including instruments that weren't common in music at the time. This album showcases them right in the middle of this transition. Other observations: 1. It just occurred to me that this is The Beatles at their most Monkees-like. (I know, it was the Monkees copying them, not vice versa). 2. Interesting that they chose to close the album with a song about threatening to kill a girl if she sees another man. Times were different! 4.5 stars, rounding up to 5.
Great
Great. Loved it
great album
Drive My Car // Norwegian Wood // Nowhere Man // The Word // Michelle // What Goes On //
I go back and forth on this one being my favourite Beatles album. Had they included Day Tripper on it there would have been no question. I think these days I lean more towards Abbey Road or the White Album.
Is it weird that I appreciate the length of the songs and how short they are especially after the instrumental album? I also think that of the Beatles music I didn’t really know any of these songs from this album except one but it’s very very good
What's not to like? This is the Beatles coming into their own as songwriters and every cut is a memorable tune.
Comments: My favorite Beatles album. Hoping Giles Martin would remix it soon. Favorite tracks: Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood, Michelle, In My Life Rating: 5/5
10/10, no notes
oh how I wish to have been alive at that time
One of the best Beatles albums. In My Life is one of my top 10 songs ever
A superb album by an iconic band. One of the all-time greats.
Always great and nostalgic
The first truly great Beatles album. I used to rank this one fairly low amongst the classic Beatles albums, but this last listen made me appreciate it even more.
Unimpeachable classic. "I'm Looking Through You" an all-time Beatles track rarely recognized as such. Marred only by the unpleasant "Run For Your Life."
One of the Beatles best.
My first love!
This album is where the Beatles traded "yeah, yeah, yeah" for introspective brilliance. A musical kaleidoscope blending folk, rock, and introspective lyrics. Timeless melodies and innovative songwriting make it a perennial top 10 contender, proving that sometimes the soul speaks loudest when it's rubbery.
This is where my real interest in the Beatles begins. Rubber Soul is the first album where I feel the Beatles are trying to be serious musicians, even if the songs are mostly sub-3 minutes and very catchy. As others have said, this is a very influential album based on the folk-rock sound and the background vocals that defined a lot of bands that arrived on the scene after this. Surprised "I'm Looking Through You" doesn't have as many plays on Spotify as the bigger hits on the album. It's a great song.
Classic Beatles album, can't really say much more. It's a lot more pop-y than the later albums, reminds me a lot of Revolver. Wish it finished stronger Repeats: Drive my car, Norwegian wood, you won't see me, in my life, Skips: run for your life
Already knew it before, 10/10 album
This is the album that inspired the Beach Boys to make Pet Sounds, which is one of my favourite albums, so this already gets a high score for that. But beyond that, the songs on this album are so good, which justifies the high score.
Super!
Not much to say that hasn't been said. Near perfect. I've got that on vinyl. :)
Every song is great. The Beatles were not a fluke. it is hard for me to wrap my head around it, why their sound and status endures, but their music, songwriting, harmonies, etc. are still so fresh--to me they dont sound dated or old.
Great fucking album. Revolutionary.
We used to play this album during out doll tea parties. Honestly one of my favorite albums 5/5
A Great Album,so Many Great Tracks, the Beatles Are amazing. My favourite song is in my life but almost all of the album is as good as that song. It’s a great album.
Some awesome ones on here. They have so many bots it is interesting to hear them in the og albums . Surprised to learn where they're all from but another great Beatles album
This album is great. Every song is catchy and you can sing along with it.
Obvious 5 stars
Classic banger albums. Good relisten didn’t remember how many good I like on this one.
Post acid Beatles hit. In my life revolutionary
Gotta give it a 5 for the nostalgia, my inner child is screaming "beep beep yeah!" in the backseat of our wood paneled plymouth voyager
Such an interesting album in The Beatles’ career. It goes without saying that the songs are uniformly excellent, but what’s interesting about this album is that it kind of fills that space between their earlier career and the more mature studio experimentation to come. But none of that matters as much as how perfectly crafted and engaging these songs are.
I named my dog Ringo, so of course everything from the Beatles is 5 stars. Really like nowhere man, but there are so many good songs to pick from
Since I've given two Beatles albums 5 stars already, Rubber Soul should receive the same. Personally, RS is probably my favourite Beatles record. It's that sweet spot in 1965 (Revolver included), the turning point for the band, writing all their own songs on an album that has barely any filler tracks. Beyond this period, the band became more experimental and hit and miss, but if you want perfectly crafted 2-3 minute pop songs, Rubber Soul is hard to top. Many highlights on the album and the version I listened to (UK) is superior song-wise than the US version. A good place to start if you've never listened to or heard of the Beatles.
just lovely, plenty of all time bangers
Previously listened to for this list: With the Beatles (5/5) ************************************ I have listened to Rubber Soul many, many times, so I don't need to hear it again to rate it. (I still did, though.) It's one of the Beatles' best albums. I enjoy every song on it, even Ringo's country song, What Goes On. Yes, even John's lyrically disturbing Run For Your Life. George stepped up his game here from his relatively weak songs on Help! with Think for Yourself and If I Needed Someone. The Word and Wait may be filler-ish tracks, but there are way too many amazing songs (Norweigian Wood, Nowhere Man, Michelle, In My Life, I'm Looking Through You) to not give a 5/5.
Paired beste beatles album
Excellent.
fire
Just fantastic all the way through!
Heard before: Yes Favourites: Norwegian wood, In my life, Michelle Top tier
Listened to it 4 times back to front
IF BeatlesAlbum THEN rating = 5
The "beep beep. beep beep. yeah!" lives rent free in my head. This is the beginning of my favorite Beatles era. Just a lot of my favorite songs from the Beatles, and a really good album beginning to end.
5/5
I don’t think I’d skip any songs
what can i say, it's a stone cold classic. it's hard for me to give proper analysis and takes because i've listened to the beatles my whole life and i am extremely biased. but i love this album. lots o tambourine, lots o organ, some of the beatles' most underrated songs are on this. one of my favs!
Fantastic Abbey Road has always been my #1 and the spot for the second best beatles album has always been between pepper/white/rubber/revolver. After this listen, I might lean towards rubber soul now. Outstanding, a great balance between the pop and what was to come In My Life, perhaps one of the best beatles song, and certainly one of the best john has written 5/5
A sweet sort of happiness permeates the whole thing. Had some iffy songs, but the highs were extremely high. Favorite song: “In My Life.”
It’s the kid a album of the Beatles.
A BANGER!!! I love mid-60s Beatles!!
Hun eerste volwaardige meesterwerk. I'm Looking Through You
Great Album
Maybe the first truly great Beatles album? With this album the Beatles moved from being a remarkable pop band to a visionary, envelope-pushing band. There's far too much to say about how much ground is broken in this album. The quality of the songwriting and recording is a huge step from early Beatles recordings. The album is varied yet cohesive. It has both great pop hits and more profound songs. This album sets up a remarkable streak of innovative releases from the band.
Dig it. Also listened to Abbey road and revolver the last two days. This album struck me as more natural, less produced, more just jamming out a bit.
Favorite song: In My Life Least favorite song: Run for Your Life One word: Proto-psychedelic
Great middle album by the Beatles. Incredibly tough to only pick three great songs. Top 3 In My Life Norwegian Wood Drive My Car
A classic.
10/10
Great album. One of my favorites.
Now this is right up my alley. I love the Beatles and this is one of their best. Perfect harmonies and rhythms make this album superb. Keep giving me more like this.
This and Revolver are my two favorite Beatles albums. On any given day I'll say one or the other, but it's a perfect album regardless
The Beatles are basically an automatic five star for me!
One of my favourite albums.
Already one of my favorite albums, and heard 100x before, but re-listen was great. listened 3x
Another example of casual greatness. Favorite track: In My Life
Lo han dicho otros y más o menos opino lo mismo. Con este disco lo Beatles empezaron a ser ellos sin nada que les dijera qué camino seguir. Tiene canciones impresionantes: Drive my car, Norwegian wood, Nowhere man, In my life o If I need someone. Sin olvidar Michelle o Girl (con ese aspirar entre dientes). Este disco es de cinco estrellas aún sabiendo que otros de los suyos deberían ser de 6 o 7.
Fab
I mean I love this album already
Michelle, ma belle bride, s’ont des mots qui vont tres bien ensemble. In my life, I loved you more.
Really loved this album less one song
Transitional album between early Beatles and Superstar Beatles. Their first iconic album. Highlights: Drive My Car Norwegian Wood Girl In My Life
This one used to be my favourite Beatles album as a kid, and that might still be true. It's hard to pick a favourite. The harmonies are quite good on this one, which is probably a big part of why kid me liked it so much. Not quite into the weird stuff yet, but there are still hints of what's to come. I like early and later Beatles quite a lot, but the middle period might be my favourite era because of how it balances the sounds of the eras it's sandwiched between. I love most of the songs on here, with the only exception being The Word. My favourite songs, though it's really hard to pick, would be Michelle, You Won't See Me, and If I Needed Someone.
Objectivement et subjectivement un 5
cest toujours le moment
