Reviews (page 2 of 7)
Very nice! Powerful and mild voice! I like it.
Elvis reconnects with the Attractions and drops another banger!
The Master. All that is good about music.
Great album its everything an 80s album should be. Elvis captured the essence of the decade and simply is a staple of the 80s. All his albums are alike but they are awesome so this one is in the top
I really liked it.
One of my all time favourite Elvis Costello albums. Was great to revisit this one this morning. Love the melodies, and I love the oftentimes softer touch on some of these tracks.
Elvis Costello has tons of great albums under his belt. This one is one of his best and a signature sound.
The best!!!
Excelente disco desde la tapa en adelante. Muy buenas canciones que uno no se cansa de escuchar.
This is an excellent record, just so many good tunes. Favourite tracks: Kinder Murder, Clown Strike, You Tripped at Every Step, 20% Amnesia, My Science Fiction Twin.
Before listening: I know a handful of Elvis Costello songs and I do like them. Mind you, other than She, the songs I know are from the 70s and 80s. I don't know what they sound like in 1994. After listening: I absolutely loved it! Some of these melodies are the best I've heard and even though the album goes for nearly an hour I enjoyed the whole thing.
Album slaps.
One of the best records!!!
Great album!
Elvis Costello is a treasure. Truly unique. Didn't appreciate his music as a kid (dumb kid) but have since learned to be better.
A return to form for Costello and an album I absolutely love. This is singer songwriting at its finest - a fascinating glimpse into boyhood and other times. The band are in absolute sync, Costello fires his witty, intelligent and snappy lyrics throughout, frequently finding moments of loathing, passion and compassion. An artist evolved, mature and confident in his music.
Once in a blue suede moon, an album comes along that not only defies expectations but gleefully shatters them with an almost impish delight. 'Brutal Youth' sees Elvis Costello, the bespectacled punk poet laureate, leap back into the fray with an album that oozes sardonic charm and a mischievous smirk. From the very first note, Costello and his trusty band of musical mercenaries take us on a rollicking rock and roll joyride. It's as if the snarling spirit of the Attractions has possessed a tight-knit garage band, with Costello's biting wit and lyrical genius orchestrating the chaos like a punk-rock puppet master. Some standout songs for me start with 'Kinder Murder'. 'This is Hell' serves as the perfect soundtrack for an infernal mosh pit, while 'Clown Strike' lets the listener know that this carnival is not for the faint of heart. 'You Tripped at Every Step' offers a slightly mellower reprieve, with Costello demonstrating his penchant for blending sweet melodies with biting lyrics. 'Sulky Girl' sees our protagonist donning his best sneer, as he channels the essence of 70s punk into a potent and infectious tune. As we venture further into the album, 'My Science Fiction Twin' blasts us into orbit with its otherworldly tale of doppelgangers and identity crises, while the ironically-titled 'Just About Glad' sends us off with a delightfully sardonic farewell. In a world where many aging rockers settle into complacency or fade into obscurity, Elvis Costello has not only defied the odds but done so with a triumphant, tongue-in-cheek swagger. 'Brutal Youth' is a testament to his enduring talent and a delightful reminder that sometimes, old punks never die—they just rock harder. So, if you're in the mood to relive the rebellious spirit of yesteryear, strap yourself in and brace for impact. Elvis Costello's 'Brutal Youth' is a wild and witty joyride that'll leave you grinning from ear to ear, and just about glad to be alive.
A lesser known of EC's albums, but still full of great songs
The voice it's like Jonathan Larson in "Rent" the movie, ando it's very good! Thx!
A very strong effort from Elvis Costello. I prefer rocking Elvis to balladeer Elvis and this record has a bunch of those. My favorites are Just About Glad, All the Rage, Rocking Horse Road, but this is excellent all the way through. I’d give this a 4.5 if possible but I’ll round up because it’s one of my favorite Elvis albums
My favourite Elvis 😊
Elvis Costello is my guy and he sounds amazing on this.
Fucking awesome!
Loved every minute of it
cool
The only Elvis that matters
Sheeeee
Really really really good.
Continuing to enjoy hearing more of this guy
Good but all his songs sound the same to me
Feels like the songs are as good as any later Costello, but the production is slightly off.
Lot of really good tunes on this, at least at the start. A lot of cuts here could have been classic Elvis number 1s from the early days. I didn't follow closely the Attractions/no Attractions/some Attractions discussions, just trying to enjoy. And enjoy I do! Years ago, I participated in a What Are Your Top 10 Elvis Costello Songs and I can't remember exactly but pretty sure I selected 13 Steps Lead Down. Granted there does seem to be some filler here, but when he's on, incisive, insightful, intriguing Declan here.
Lots of great songs on here, though perhaps a few tunes over the limit.
I think this would get a 5 star from me just for the cuteness of little Elvis on the cover. Who is his equally adorable friend!? (I searched...not too deeply...and couldn't find) I know we have a lot of Elvis Costello on this list and this album is not one of my favorites (although I did own it) but I can happily listen to Elvis any time and it's a 4 to 5 star experience.
I feel confident in saying Elvis Costello has never made a bad album and deserves marks for forever moving forward. This album supports that thesis. The band is tightly wound in that perfect Attractions way, Elvis is about to pop out of his skin half of the time. Dreamy Steve Nieve keys. I don't know if it's essential but it dispatched me on a journey of listening to all those EC records I never got around to so thanks!
Really enjoyed it and on the whole good BPM for a running sound track
I don't know what it is about this man that is so... weirdly charming? Even when half of my brain can acknowledge "this song is boring" the other half is so enamored with the fact that you can hear him putting his whole pussy into it. He is going all in. Having a fucking ball. And then every now and then you do get a song that is both fun and good. This is a rounded up 3.5. I don't think I understand Elvis Costello, but he compels me though...
Love Costello’s voice. So unique.
It’s good
Pretty Good. I don't know how this stacks up with his other albums because I'm not that familiar with Elvis Costello. But it was enjoyable for the most part.
Very enjoyable, though his voice sounded kinda bad in a few tracks. Would listen again
This was the first Elvis Costello I ever heard, back in 1994. I still really like it. It's not a 5 star because this isn't the best Costello album, but it's great.
Rhyming 'perimeter fence' w/ 'senseless' & 'regiment,' 'bruise' w/ 'leather shoes' & 'bad mood music,' 'trophies' w/ 'hope is' or 'sofa' w/ 'oaf' proves that Costello is still at the peak of his powers in '94 & that it's essentially a given that you'll get at least some lyrical mastery from the bloke. Mastery doesn't make a great record tho. Great songs do. Brutal Youth has several tracks that are almost great, including 'This is Hell,' 'Still Too Soon to Know,' 'Rocking Horse Road,' & 'All the Rage,' but nothing as instantly great as something off This Year's Model. It's a record of virtuosity w/ pockets of poignancy, not an album that makes you feel all that much in the end, tho I wouldn't call it cold exactly. There's just nothing blazingly immediate here.
Really liked the punk elements even if it wasnt super heavy, great vocals, great songs. Loved this one!
Pistas destacadas Pony St. Kinder Murder 13 Steps Lead Down This is Hell Clown Strike You Tripped at Every Step Still too soon to know Sulky Girl London's Brilliant Parade My Science Fiction Twin Rocking Horse Road All the Rage
Enjoyed it, easy enough listen
I'm most familiar with Costello's work from the 70's to mid-80's so I hadn't heard this one before. I enjoyed it from front to back and would definitely listen to this again.
4.5
Pretty darn good album.
Released during the heady days of Britpop, the now elder statesman of the new wave reunited with his original band the Attractions (it lasted a couple of albums until bassist Bruce Thomas annoyed Elvis again) for his best and most consistent album since the early 80s with some absolute gems (sulky girl, London's brilliant parade, favourite hour) in and amongst some consistent fare that got people talking about him commercially again. He kept distinctive drummer Pete Thomas and keyboardist Steve Nieve in his next band The Imposters in the following decade. I recall being quite interested in this album when not listening to Blur and Oasis!
Appropriately named album. I could feel the angst the whole time. None of the songs really called to me, but I can see why people enjoy Elvis Costello so much.
The meaning of my life is she
I don't know -- I enjoy Elvis Costello and his pop vibes.
Lekker wegdromen, mooi album
Another Costello banger
Costello is a blind spot for me and I always enjoy his stuff when I listen to it but none of it ever really sticks.
This was released the same year as The Very Best of Elvis Costello and The Attractions 1977-86. I had that album and listened to it a few times. I don't remember much of it, but I remember thinking it was good. Couldn't name you a song from it, though. Anyway, I didn't have Brutal Youth and that is a shame because this is awesome! For a guy who released his first album in 1977, you'd think that 1994 would be a late stage output, but this isn't even the halfway mark for him! Wild stuff. Some really fun, catchy jams on here. It doesn't really feel like a 90s album and that is just fine with me; most of it sounds like it's from another time. Very cool. But then there's also these shades of punk rock throughout it. Also very cool. What more is there to say? A very solid 4 stars on this one. I don't think I can justify a 5, because it's a little on the long side and you could probably cut 2-3 of the songs on the back half, but you I could go to a 4.5 if we had the option. Post review reading addendum: The peanut gallery out in full force on this site once again. Get a life, folks. The album rules.
Z3.5
I always want to like this album more than I do. The highs are very good and it's got some of his best songs since Blood & Chocolate. However, it's too long and there's some real clunkers that could be cut. When it's on, it's really good though. Highlights for me are "Kinder Murder", "Sulky Girl", and "All the Rage". It's nice to hear Elvis' more rocking side come out for sure. Light 4 stars.
When it comes to my favorite artists, I often end up thinking of their career in three phases. The first, the golden period, is when I first discover the artist, buy all their albums as soon as they come out, listen to them closely, and then await the next gem. Everything that came before is their early period; I’ll invariably work my way through their back catalog until I hit upon some earlier albums I really don’t care for and rarely listen to. But, being a favorite artist, I’ll probably end up owning all their albums. Then there’s the late period. This usually starts when one of the new albums is a big disappointment — like Billy Joel’s AN INNOCENT MAN or R.E.M.’s MONSTER — and then I’m like “Well, I don’t have to buy their albums when they come out anymore” and it goes from there. In this period I will often wait for reviews, stop paying close attention to new release dates, and wait to pick them up months or years later. In my mind, the artist has peaked, will never top the stuff I love, but, y’know, I’m still interested. My golden period for Elvis Costello is TRUST (1981) to SPIKE (1989) and the later period is MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE (1991) to now. BRUTAL YOUTH is one of those top-notch late period Elvis Costello albums I often overlook. I’d forgotten about all the photos of 4- and 9-year-old Declan on the cover and in the CD booklet. And all my favorite personnel are here, too: the Attractions and Nick Lowe are back. Produced by Mitchell Froom and Elvis Costello. Recorded and mixed by Tchad Blake. Mastered by Bob Ludwig. No wonder this album sound so good!
It hits that sweet spot where Costello’s fire, humor, and bruised honesty all show up at once.
This was a really solid listen despite the bad reviews. Right away in This Is Hell, I caught the Beatles nods to John’s “it can’t get no worse” line in “It’s Getting Better,” and even the piano ending felt like it was pulled straight out of “A Day in the Life.” Stuff like that always gets bonus points from me. “Just About Glad” was a standout and easily one of the best tracks on the album. “Favorite Hour” was a nice change of pace too, stripped down and acoustic in a way that really worked. Favorite track: Just About Glad
Good
I have never listened to Elvis Costello, besides maybe Radio Radio. There is a lot that I liked. I liked the music of Kinder Murder, but the lyrics made me uncomfortable, even if it's a comment on toxic masculinity, I just couldn't get through it. This is Hell is great. By this point in the album I was getting used to his vocals. I like the variance between songs. You Tripped at Every Step is just a great pop song, with excellent piano. 20% Amnesia is interesting, leaning a bit more pop punk. I like London's Brilliant Parade. Overall, I think the songwriting is very evocative and paints a picture.
I really enjoyed this album but it started to feel a little repetitive near the end.
Interesting how many people dislike this. I thought it was quite good!
I really liked this. Catchy.
Thought this was a solid album. Pleasantly surprised. Saved (6/15): - Clown Strike - You Tripped at Every Step - 20% Amnesia - London's Brilliant Parade - Rocking Horse Road - All the Rage
8/10 10.03.2026
Very good album. Not quite Blood and Chocolate, but not far off.
Nice
Very good
Lekker album hoor
This was a very good album. I loved the lyrical and melodical nature of the sound. Definitely a banger.
I think Elvis Costello is an impeccable songwriter and can especially write vocal melodies like few others. They are poppy but musically interesting. Really like the two opening tracks, it sort of ebbs and flows throughout the rest of the album. This is Hell is such a pretty melody with a dark undertone. I don't think this album is the best thing he ever did, but still quite good.
Pretty good album. I think I like this just behind the first few albums. It have more of that flavor and I liked it. 3.5/5
Sulky Girl is a top song. Attractions are a killer band. That said, not sure why this album is on this list.
Well, yeah, if you don't like Elvis Costello you're not going to like this. By the mid-90s I had completely written him off and was shocked at what a solid batch of clever tunes this was, almost like the old days. (But I would gently suggest that the haters listen to Get Happy!!)
Really enjoyed
Ah, the ever-present Mr. Costello who must be rubbing his hands in glee at the streaming revenue that comes from the 1001 Albums… listeners. Considering every other album on the list seems to be one of his, it’s got to be a bonus for him. This is actually one of the best ones of his that I have heard though
I love this! With this album club I’ve had a lot of “oh, that’s where that song comes from!” Rocking Horse Road was that moment for me. Excited for the next album to be different in terms of genre and style though.
Someday I will have my own version of the 1001 Albums book & I will include all 33 Elvis Costello studio albums on it. As God is my witness! Reserve your copy NOW!
Honestly don’t understand why most of the reviews on this album complain about his voice, I kinda liked it. Standout Songs: Kinder Murder 13 Steps Lead Down You Tripped at Every Step Sulky Girl My Science Fiction Twin Just About Glad
Day695 - the more elvis costello i listen to the more i like him
Didn't know him but really liked
Already heared This Year's Model and Imperial Bedroom during this challenge. I wondered if an album from much later will be as good. It is.
Elvis Costello is one of the great songwriters, and I don't think he gets enough credit.
I always thought Costello just wrote wimpy geek music. And, on this album, he does. To an extent. His voice is like dark chocolate. You eat it, don't enjoy it, yet keep eating it. Suddenly you realise it's actually quite good (and good for you). There are moments where he pulls out some punky-ish numbers where he really puts in a great performance. He knows how to write an unusual (yet engaging melody), and I'm not sure how much of the music he played on, but there was some cool guitar/bass work. Wait, do I like Elvis Costello now? Nah, still a bit of music that sits in the stereotype I have/had. 4 Stars.
another album by costello. i listened to this one while i exercised today. despite the mostly peppy and positive sounding instrumentals, this is clearly an album about a midlife crisis. initially when you turn it on, you'll probably think it's all happy but legit as soon as you listen to the lyrics, that positive power turns into nervous power. the whole album is a boulevard of broken dreams, mostly about periods in his life where he regretted or periods where things have gone better. i thought it was a pretty good listen for the most part.
There's no denying Elvis Costello's talent as a lyricist, and the music on this album is tight and well-produced, yet, somehow, I just can't seem to connect with the artist's musical style. If I could, it would have been a five-star album for me. As it is, just four.
Best Song: This is Hell Elvis Costello is another one the author seems to adore. I'm not going to knock it, he's not bad - simply not my cup of tea all the time like Costello-heads. It's standard rock n roll and fine. The biggest problem is it's replayability, I don't think it's there. Maybe as background music but, for me, there's much better albums I would choose to listen to before this.
Elvis Costello has been a mixed bag for me on this challenge so far. I’ve liked some, and disliked others. This album falls into the former, as I found myself enjoying this more than expected. If I had one complaint, it felt like it went on a bit too long. 3.5 / 5
Yea man. It’s Costello. It’s rock. It’s pretty good.
Really solid stuff. More polished than some of his early albums and a good number of hits. My faves: “kinder murder”, “13 steps lead down”, “just about glad”. But really every song is great, end to end.
Not heard this for ages!
Okay, now I get the reverence for Elvis Costello. I was only really familiar with the big hits and some of his work as a producer, but wow. This is a great record. Easy 4 stars, could likely rise to 5 after a few more listens.
I love these songs, but still struggle with Elvis' vocals--they've never really done it for me. Still, might be a 4.5
Elvis Costello is an interesting artist to come out of this project for me. obviously has an edge to him but also has a very soft, almost sweet side. not unlike Bruce. and i think when he leans into that softer side he shines brightest. but this was a very nice listen throughout either way
Pretty solid.
A voice like a sneer Sinatra and Sid Vicious Trying to play nice
Though not up to the standards of some of his 70's and 80's albums, this is a very good, melodic return of the band work with the Attractions. "13 Steps Lead Down" is a banger and the songwriting is in good form here.
Had a great time. I like Elvis Costello a lot, and this album made me want to listen to him more than I actually do. Lots of great, soulful songs on this.
Didn’t expect it to be this good.
A good enough album that I listened to it even though I know I've listened to it before. Costello is good at what he does. But what he doesn't isn't quite my cup of tea.
Cool Costello's transition towards the 90s
This was my first time ever listening to Elvis Costello. It was a good album…Not enough to add to my liked songs on Spotify or anything. But I am interested to listen to more of his albums, which I see from reviews I will have plenty of opportunities to do so! For some reason my favorite song on this album was 20% Amnesia. I think I liked the beat. 3.5/5
Another Elvis album, but I hadn't heard this one before. I quite like it! Liked Songs Added: Kinder Murder 13 Steps Lead Down 20% Amnesia
I really enjoyed this. Songs have been stuck in my head for a while.
I’m a big Elvis Costello fan but this doesn’t seem like it should be on here.
6/10
I wasn't really going for it off the bat, but it certainly grew on me.
Very Elvis Costello, no stand-out tracks to me but an album I'll be listening to more
Not a familiar album but after listening it should be.
Enough elements of his 70s/early 80s work to satisfy fans from that era, and enough “maturity” and evolution to his lyrics and playing to show he wasn’t just trying to do the same thing over and over.
Very approachable, and worth a second listen, at least.
Pretty good. 3.5*, rounding up
Previously rated: Armed Forces (3/5) My Aim Is True (4/5) Imperial Bedroom (2/5) This Year's Model (4/5) Blood And Chocolate (3/5) ******************************* My sixth Elvis Costello so far. This is one of the better ones. Best: 13 Steps Lead Down. Worst: Favourite Hour.
Nice album had not heard this Elvis Costello one before
мне нравится данный старичок
The more I listen to Elvis Costello, the more I like his music.
I mean it sounds like classic Costello, so cant go wrong. Kinder murder is brilliant storytelling in a song “dreaming of the pigskin’ The whole album just feels balanced.
I’d never heard of this album before but, as a fan of Costello’s early work with The Attractions, had high hopes. I wasn’t disappointed.
My first of the many Elvis Costello albums on this list. The mix on this is weird. If you're wearing headphones at points it sounds like Elvis is shouting directly into your ear drowning out the music. 13 Steps Lead Down is great and I really liked 20% Amnesia because of the slightly off-kilter backing. The backing vocals on This Is Hell are unintentionally hilarious - like he decided to use the worst fake Ringo accent he could conjure up - and it almost wrecks a song I otherwise really liked. My Science Fiction Twin was another track I really enjoyed. I know Elvis Costello is divisive, as a lot of people hate his voice. I am not one of those people. 4/5
i haven’t listened to much of Costello’s 90s offerings, but i quite liked this one. good for a Sunday morning listen :)
6/13/25. Really fun album, starting to believe Elvis Costello is an underrated songwriter. Knows how to write a song that pops.
Really liked the vocals
good storytelling in his lyricism. Enjoyable songs even if you aren't dedicated to hearing the underlying story
Solid. While I was unfamiliar with this album, it holds consistent with his earlier work. I will definitely have to relisten.
4/5
a good Costello
Not an all-hits no-filler like armed forces etc but some pretty great songs in here nonetheless
Overall, the best Costello I've listened to so far on this list.
addictive
Classic Elvis Costello. This is good stuff, not necessarily his best but something any Costello fan should listen to, and new listeners would get a good taste of him. A definite "listen".
Gonna be real, I’ve never listened to Elvis Costello before, despite hearing of him a lot. I’m sad it took me this long. This album is, idek how to describe this pop-rock style. It’s, so different than the others. The first song missed for me but the rest hit, and hit really good. Kinder Murder was such a banger.
на вокале не помешал бы ревер, а так норм, парочка песен понравилась.
I like the music that came after this more than the original stuff. Not a bad album though.
Man this project has a lot of Costello on it. I guess I'm well versed in him now. This is my 6th album of his. He's grown on me. While his tone is still kinda dorky to me, he's a great songwriter, able to evoke emotion in lyrics and delivery, often weaving a little 50s doowop sound into the mix
Coming into this review I was not at all familiar with Elvis Costello. My initial impressions of this album are that the lyrics and vocal stylings feel very "punk" sounding but don't really follow the same up tempo, quick pace that punk music I'm accustomed to usually is. Costello's voice is sardonic sounding but with enough grit to where it maintains that punk sound. It's something that's difficult to put into words but you really just have to hear it for yourself. This is a record I wish I would've followed along with the lyrics a little more closely but the musicianship and instrumentation is fun and has a playful cynicism I appreciate. Will absolutely return to this one in the future! Standout tracks are: "13 Steps Lead Down", "This is Hell", "London's Brilliant Parade", "Just About Glad"
****A good album
What a comeback to rock album! Elvis’ voice is beautifully mature here too. Some of the later songs feel a bit like fluff but mostly a collection of gems.
p730. 1994. 4 stars Costello and the Attractions on top form. Cynical, razor sharp lyrics that make you want to take a shower after listening, and some cracking tunes. Point deducted for his voice, which is annoying.
Good, Not great but fun listening experience, might reviset at some point
Initially, I didn’t like it as much as other Elvis Costello albums but the more I listened the more I liked it.
First time hearing this aside from “Sulky Girl.” Not my favorite album of his, but what a creative songwriter, there’s a lot to enjoy here as there always is with Elvis Costello
> The Beatles
Quality
Very good back to basics album
solid album, i enjoyed every second and time flies so fast when listening into this album, genius writing and a bit sarcastic but i like it
Costello breaks everything down and makes a bare boned album that allows his songs to breathe. As a Costello fan I really like the "closeness" of this album. Does it need to be on this list though? Probably not. Best Tracks: 13 Steps Lead Down; Clown Strike; Sulky Girl
This was my least favorite of the Costello albums so far, but there is enough good here that I'd listen to it again.
Elvis doesn’t miss
Better than unexpected this to be. Some of records are great while others are just bland. Strange but that’s how I feel.
## In-Depth Review of *Brutal Youth* by Elvis Costello Elvis Costello's *Brutal Youth*, released in 1994, marks a significant moment in his discography as it reunites him with his original band, The Attractions, after nearly a decade apart. This album is often viewed as a return to form for Costello, capturing the essence of his earlier work while exploring new thematic and musical territories. This review will delve into the lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence of *Brutal Youth*, along with its pros and cons. ### Lyrics The lyrics of *Brutal Youth* reflect Costello's characteristic wit and insight. Many songs grapple with themes of infidelity, betrayal, and the complexities of personal relationships. Notably, the track "Kinder Murder" employs vivid imagery and sharp wordplay to explore darker aspects of love and violence. The lyrics are marked by a cinematic quality, where Costello paints scenes that evoke strong emotional responses. Costello himself noted that while he did not set out with a specific theme in mind, many songs inadvertently addressed infidelity and personal disillusionment. This duality—personal relationships intertwined with broader societal issues—creates a rich tapestry of meaning throughout the album. For instance, in "13 Steps Lead Down," he juxtaposes personal despair with societal critique, showcasing his ability to merge the intimate with the political. ### Music Musically, *Brutal Youth* is an eclectic mix that showcases Costello's versatility as an artist. The album features a blend of rock, pop, and new wave elements, characterized by tight arrangements and dynamic instrumentation. The reunion with The Attractions brings a renewed energy to the album; their trademark sound—marked by Bruce Thomas's punchy bass lines and Steve Nieve's keyboard flourishes—provides a solid foundation for Costello's incisive melodies. Tracks like "Clubland" exemplify this synergy, combining catchy hooks with cynical lyrics about nightlife and superficiality. The song's upbeat tempo contrasts sharply with its darker lyrical themes, a hallmark of Costello's songwriting style. Other tracks such as "All the Rage" and "This Is Hell" feature driving rhythms and layered instrumentation that create an immersive listening experience. ### Production The production of *Brutal Youth* plays a crucial role in its overall impact. Produced by Nick Lowe and featuring contributions from various musicians, the album strikes a balance between polished sound and raw energy. The recording sessions were reportedly chaotic yet productive; Costello himself described them as "barely coherent ramblings" shaped into cohesive songs through relentless reworking. The mix captures the essence of live performance while allowing for studio enhancements that elevate certain tracks. For example, "You Tripped at Every Step" features lush string arrangements that complement its poignant lyrics without overshadowing them. This careful attention to detail ensures that each song feels distinct while maintaining a cohesive sound throughout the album. ### Themes Thematically, *Brutal Youth* explores several interconnected ideas: - **Infidelity**: Many songs reflect on betrayal in personal relationships, often blurring the lines between romantic and platonic connections. - **Disillusionment**: A sense of weariness permeates the album, reflecting Costello's experiences on the road and his struggles with fame. - **Societal Critique**: Costello frequently addresses broader social issues through personal narratives, using his experiences as a lens to examine larger cultural phenomena. - **Nostalgia vs. Reality**: There is an ongoing tension between idealized memories and harsh realities in relationships and society at large. These themes resonate throughout the album, creating a rich narrative that invites listeners to engage deeply with both the lyrics and music. ### Influence *Brutal Youth* has had a lasting impact on both fans and critics alike. It is often seen as a pivotal moment in Costello's career—a successful attempt to reconnect with his roots while simultaneously pushing forward into new territory. The album has influenced subsequent generations of musicians who admire Costello's lyrical prowess and genre-blending approach. Critics have noted that *Brutal Youth* encapsulates the spirit of 1990s rock while also harkening back to the punk-infused energy of Costello's earlier work. Its exploration of complex themes through accessible music has made it a reference point for artists seeking to balance commercial appeal with artistic integrity. ### Pros and Cons **Pros:** - **Lyrical Depth**: The album showcases Costello’s sharp wit and ability to weave intricate narratives. - **Musical Variety**: A diverse range of styles keeps the listening experience fresh and engaging. - **Strong Performances**: The reunion with The Attractions revitalizes the band’s sound, delivering tight performances throughout. - **Production Quality**: High-quality production enhances both the clarity of the instruments and the emotional weight of the lyrics. **Cons:** - **Inconsistent Tracks**: While many songs shine, some tracks may feel less impactful or memorable compared to others. - **Chaotic Recording Process**: The tumultuous nature of the recording sessions may have led to unevenness in some tracks. - **Mixed Reception**: Despite its strengths, some critics felt that it did not fully capture the magic of earlier albums like *This Year’s Model* or *Imperial Bedroom*. ### Conclusion In summary, *Brutal Youth* stands as a testament to Elvis Costello's enduring talent as a songwriter and musician. With its intricate lyrics, varied musical styles, and thoughtful production, it captures both personal struggles and societal critiques in a way that resonates deeply with listeners. While it may not be without its flaws—some tracks lacking the punch of others—the album ultimately succeeds in presenting a compelling narrative that reflects both nostalgia and contemporary realities. Costello's ability to blend these elements into a cohesive work makes *Brutal Youth* an essential part of his discography and an important entry in 1990s rock music history.
Worth it just for "Sulky Girl".
One of EC's pop-rock records. I kind of lost touch with Elvis in the 90s but Brutal Youth follows in the line from his 80s classics to his 21st century return to loud music with When I Was Cruel. Brutal Youth is a good record but is it something you MUST hear? I'm not sure.
Amused to see so much hate for this in the reviews. I suppose if you can't get on with the voice then you can't get on with the voice. For me, Elvis is at his best when he's effortlessly churning out workman-like pop, such as Just About Glad and Tripped at Every Step. There are a few fillers but it's a great album
Great album
Not my typical genre of music but there is no denying the songwriting genius of Elvis Costello. Each of the songs is still an enjoyable listen and the vocal and instrumental performances are top notch.
Would definitely visit again; British pop keep becoming more interesting
I ended up listening to this one twice. My wife is an Elvis Costello fan, but didn't know this record so wanted to listen to it after I did. It didn't do much for me the first time, but really started to grow on me the second listen. The songs weren't super catchy the first time through, but I found myself really enjoying them more with repeated listening. I guess I'm saying this one will grow on you. Especially if you already like Elvis Costello.
Pleasantly surprised by the his one
I don't get why so many people hate this album. To be fair this is my first Elvis Costello album on the list but it's pretty good. Everything sounds great and it's better than a lot of album I've heard on this list. It's not a 5 but a solid 4.
Notable tracks: 13 Steps Lead Down, You Tripped at Every Step, London's Brilliant Parade
I enjoy
He yaps for sure. But not derogatory

Jaunty
I'll admit, the only reason 100% on this album is because of how many times I've listened to MY AIM IS TRUE (and, as well, Weird Al's pastiche "I'm So Sick Of You"). Now, don't get me wrong: I still liked this album a lot. Enough to slap it with a 4, even. Compositionally, it still sounds like Costelo, and I like his writing a lot. It's just, instrumentally, aesthetically... In short, I prefer his new wave/pub punk sound. This alt. rock/power pop sound... It's **good**. It's just not what I'd reach for first. Ain't no "Miracle Man" or "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" on here.
As a fan of They Might Be Giants, I can definitely groove with this album considering they're influenced by Mr. Costello. 4.5 down to 4.
Not Costello's best but everything he does is incredible so it's still an easy 4
I feast on the tears of Elvis Costello haters. I gobble them up! It’s apparent that a sizabale portion of the people who are doing this project hate him. But I think he’s great. His style of rock is right up my alley. And in regards to his voice, I think he’s a better vocalist than Bob Dylan. (I also love Dylan.) So I don’t know. This was very good. Found some new favourites. I do think it’s a touch too long. I’d have cut two songs and made this tighter. 4/5
Early Elvis Costello has always been my jam, but somewhere around Imperial Bedroom I found my interest wanes. Brutal Youth is an excellent reminder that his ability to thrill in a song still remained strong.

Interesting listen. I’ll be coming back to this one
I'd never heard this one, it's definitely an EC album and it has some lovely tracks that I'll be revisiting. Thanks Dec.

This Year's Model y Armed forces son sus discos más aclamados pero a mi este es de los que más me gusta. La.banda suena compacta y el sonido eléctrico de los 90 le sienta fenomenal. Enjoyed it overall. Something I need to hear before I die? Really not.
Overall I really liked it. I do have a soft spot for Elvis Costello though.
Really enjoyed this. Not at all what I was expecting - it's a mix of pop and rock but not cringe at all.
Like the distinctive vocals of Elvis Costello and very good lyrics too. Good album and a mix of tempo throughout. Worth a listen.
This is a classic album. Really got into Elvis Costello in college.
I somehow didn’t know he was British until now
This is another cool one from Costello. His singing voice really is so unique and interesting to me. And the songwriting is just top tier as per
Nice very nice
This was honestly so much better than I expected.

I’ve never listened to a lot of Elvis Costello recently everything I’ve heard I’ve enjoyed and this album is no exception.
Elvis Costello is great, he’s legit one of my favourite artists, but to include six albums on this list is ridiculous. I’ll listen to this one properly another time.
Low to mid four. I think it’s the best if Costello’s albums that I’ve listened to on this generator. On a side note, three Costello albums in the first 200 albums generator? It likes this guy a bit too much.
Interesting - I’d like to listen to more Elvis Costello and see how I feel about him
This album grew on me after a couple listens. There are definitely some bangers on it. He has a great vibe that is exclusively his. 7/10
I've always had a lot of respect for Elvis Costello and his musicianship and songwriting abilities but, there's something about listening to him that I just find a little difficult. He's almost too perfect but I also just don't really like the sound of his voice so he bleeds a little bit into sounding like a pop singer to me. But I'm going to give this a four-star album because I just know he's extremely talented and there's literally nothing wrong with what he's doing here.
I listened to the album twice yesterday and the second time was a charm. I was hooked! Elvis Costello is both unique and talented. He has a new fan!
Another extremely consistent set of songs from Elvis. 4/5
1994 5/5: Kinder Murder, 13 Steps Lead Down, You Tripped at Every Step, Favourite Hour 4/5: London's Brilliant Parade, Pony St., This is Hell, Still Soon to Know, Sulky Girl Rating: 4/5
That was a pleasant background for a bedtime read
I've always liked the funkiness of Elvis Costello, unique sound and fun to listen to, but also not my favorite album, solid not spectacular
Enable first half. Feels like the album is just a bit too long.
It was a surprise at how good it was
Solid. This Is Hell is one of the saddest songs I've heard. Costello's lyrics are biting and sharp. Pete Thomas is simply an amazing drummer. Not as good as This Year's Model but it belongs in the book.
Nice, really listenable, sounds like a rock version of David Bowie tbh.
Clown Strike This is Hell London’s Brilliant Parade
Yeah, it's too long, but there was enough on here to keep me interested.
Often touted as a return to form, Brutal Youth mainly succeeds where it matters most, keeping in line with the statement making rock and roll that brought Elvis Costello to the dance. Although it could have done with some trimming, the album's ability to remain consistent is what keeps it a stellar collection. Favorites: Pony St., Kinder Murder, 13 Steps Lead Down, This is Hell, You Tripped at Every Step, 20% Amnesia, Sulky Girl, London's Brilliant Parade, Just About Glad.
Gibt recht Old School Vibes, kann man auch nebenher hören. Ein bisschen Beatles mäßig angehaucht.
Musically, this album is fantastic. It's Costello + the Attractions, which is always Elvis Costello at his best. This is a catchy, diverse collection of songs in the Attractions' classic style, as good as much of their earlier work. Steve Nieve's piano work in particular is stunningly good and Costello himself is in perfect voice. The arrangements are rich and hook-laden, and the lyrics are vivid and eloquent. I don't think I have spent time with this album before, so it was a nice surprise. Will definitely listen again. Fave Songs: 13 Steps Lead Down, Just About Glad, All the Rage, You Tripped at Every Step, Rocking Horse Road, Sulky Girl, London's Brilliant Parade
Lost my review, but Elvis Costello is always pretty cool 4/5
I find this album very nostalgic. Something that I have heard before without know it.
Very good; an album I had not heard which made me want to delve further into the Costello discography
The best Costello I’ve listened to
Great album Not as good as My Aim Is True This is Hell, All The Rage etc all good Going to go for a four, but I reckon i will revisit in future as it was really decent and likely a grower 4/5
This one surprised me. Really enjoyed it
his voice is PAINFULLY nasally but the instrumentals were so fun to listen to. although, as the songs go on, i think i'm starting to warm up to his voice. pretty nice!
I've always found it hard to peg Costello to a genre. There's something to it that feels more Americana than that. This is a record that's varied, catchy and has something to say. Definitely worth checking out.
Reminiscent of his early work. Nice one.
Again not my thing but I enjoyed this one. Never really know what to expect from Elvis Costello.
Iconic, great musicianship, composition at its best
Even the bad Elvis albums are relatively good
Magnficent vibe
Generally likable and of impeccable quality, of course, and always ready to hear EC and the Basher working together. However, this record can be said to lack a killer cut (though "Sulky Girl" and "This is Hell" and "13 Steps" and "Tripped" are all pretty close) and also to seeming just slightly less than essential.
Good album. Only heard of Costello's hits but his other music is really good too. Highly recommend.
Nice
Some enjoyable songs on here.
Great with a melody and a song. Surprised at all the hate.
I like Costello's early work. I never really got too far past those first few. I wasn't really thrilled to get a 90's album from him. I was pleased to mostly enjoy it. Kinder Murder is really good. I did feel a little bit of listener fatigue toward the end. I'd probably give it a 3.5 if possible.
pretty deece? I keep expecting him to be funny for some reason tho
Ik ben er de laatste jaren meer en meer achter gekomen dat ik die typische Elvis Costello sound enorm kan waarderen. Dit album was nieuw voor mij maar voelde direct vertrouwd. Goede liedjes!
Solid. Need more
Solid, with all the expected features of a Costello album... but lacking any true bangers like Beyond Belief or Lipstick Vogue or classic ballads like Alison. Not sure it needs to be on this list more than many other very good but not truly great albums.
Never heard much Elvis Costello before. I knew him as that guy with the glasses. I would definitely listen to him and this album again. At parts it almost seemed like a tribute to the Beatles, the bass lines were often very McCartney like, the vocal harmonies/echoes seemed pulled right from early Beatles. I appreciated some of the \"imperfect\"-ness of the vocals, lead and backing.
Really good album, if not one of his best. Problem with artists as prolific as the 'other Elvis' is that unless you've been in on him since early it's tough to get a grip on the back catalogue. But I've always liked him and the sooner I see him in concert the better.
I’m a big Costello fan. I’ve rarely missed seeing him when he tours here, going back to the 1978 Regent concert. He’s always terrific live, whether solo or with a band. But his recorded work over that 45 year period hasn’t always done it for me. This has not been an album I’ve revisited much since it’s release, But after a couple of plays I have found a few diamonds. 13 Steps Lead Down is the only song here that I remember staying in his live repertoire for quite a while. It’s like several tracks on this album that are reminiscent of earlier Costello songs. My Science Fiction Twin begins a lot like Pump It Up. Just About Glad is very much like an early song of his that I just can’t nail. And as usual, he borrows from the classics - he claimed London’s Brilliant Parade was a Kinks tribute, but the opening line is straight from Cream’s World Of Pain. I do like the ballads, Still To Soon To Know, All The Rage & the epic concluding track, Favourite Hour, which spawns the album’s title, & is reminiscent of the mid-80’s singles he put out as The Imposter. So in the end, this album grew on me after all these years.
I dig it
All the Rage and Sulky Girl are stars.
Classic Elvis Costello Really good Pop/Rock Sounds like Pop/Punk at times Excellent musical arrangements Good Album
the more i listen the more i dig elvis c, he’s consistently inventive and creative but he doesn’t lose the thread of hook and melody
He's had an enormous output, and is still going! Really enjoyed hearing this album of not-the-big-singles.
I feel like this album demonstrated how influential Costello is in modern music. Really enjoyed it.
The first song, Pony Street, sounds like something off Born to Run, both in the vocals and the twinkly music as well. In fact, much of this album sounds like a poor man's Bruce Springsteen. I enjoyed Brutal Youth.
Back to his ‘70s best. Sharp, cynical lyrics and catchy music. Very good.
undeniably enjoyable, but definitely a bit weaker than a lot of Costello’s other work -8/10
This is definitely Elvis' "middle-age" record. The songs are safe and pretty. His voice sounds incredible. Not much that resembles the earlier post-punk masterpieces. Ok, it started to show up there about halfway through, but I stand by my earlier assessment.
I quite enjoyed this one but also learnt this is one of 6 in the list! Wow. Anyway, enjoyed 13 Steps Lead down, 20% Amnesia, and Sulky Girl.
I enjoyed this well enough, but I gotta question its inclusion on the list, given there are 5 other Elvis Costello albums on there already. It's not like this album represents him going off in a whole new direction, is it? Fave track - "Sulky Girl"
I like Elvis Costello. I think I have one album and one compilation album of his. Brutal Youth was all new music for me. I enjoyed the album in general. "Pony St.", "This is Hell", and "My Science Fiction Twin" were the tracks I rated highest. These tracks are good examples of the unconvential lyrics from Costello which can keep my interest and a cleverness that can make me smile. I would listen to this album again.
An aged Costello is a bit tastier than the rest, methinks.
I assume his first two albums are on here and those will get 5s. This one is not quite there for me but maybe it’s just because I never heard any of these songs before. My favorite was “You Tripped At Every Step”.
"Brutal Youth" is the 14th studio album from Elvis Costello with either the Attractions, the Imposters or the Costello Show. This is the first one with the Attractions since 1986's "Blood and Chocolate" and a few songs sound like they could have been on that album. Nick Lowe actually appears on about half the songs playing bass. Most of this album is vintage Costello: great lyrics, storytelling and a rockin' solid band. The keyboards open "Pony St." and the band kicks in hard. Drummer Pete Thomas is just killin' it. A daughter with wild parents. Costello tells a grim story in "Kinder Murder." Great off-key guitar. A guy in the army impregnates a woman, forces an abortion and then kills himself. No light-heartedness here. The third song "13 Steps Lead Down" continues the rock. A searing guitar. Pounding drums. I think about falling off the 12th-step addiction program with the 13th step being the falling off. "You Tripped at Every Step" is a slower, sadder song. Piano led. A story about an alcoholic girlfriend possibly his then wife Cait O'Riordan. Back to rockin' and even angry Costello in "20% Amnesia." Costello screaming. People forgetting the small things, the 20%, including what and who to vote for. "My Science Fiction Twin" is more classic Costello. Organ/piano led. Driving rhythm section. Nice guitar placement. A division between private and public persona. A piano ballad in "Favourite Hour" concludes the album. Costello crooning. Time passing by and death. We finally get the "Brutal Youth" lyric. I honestly kind of gave up on any new Elvis Costello after 1989's "Spike." My loss as this is an outstanding album and stands up with his 80's best.
Definitely a songwriter album. Lyrics and attitude are on full display and nearly everything is pretty engaging though not always melodic. Though the energy/shift is nice on 20% Amnesia, that is pretty much the only song that doesn't work for me. Love Sulky Girl.
Another type of rock and roll sound. I enjoyed it.
Elvis Costello is the coolest Elvis.
Iloinen yllätys! Mitä enemmän kuuntelin tätä albumia, sitä enemmän tykästyin siihen. Lisäsin muutamia kappaleita soittolistalle.
Good, some stand out tracks.
8.6
It's a fresh sounding album chock full of well crafted pop songs with catchy musical hooks. I struggled to hear a lot of the lyrics but there are some great song titles. Probably a little bit too long (or maybe a tad too many songs) but the quality remains high and the production has warmth and a bit of bite. It was well worth a listen (and close to getting 5)
Witty songwriting and great music. But then I am an Elvis Costello fan so I would say that wouldn't I?
3.75
First eight songs were great. I'm not a big fan of his singing, but I really like the melodies. I didn't like many of the tracks after Sulky Girl. I think the album would've been much better if the number of tracks was cut in half. 15 songs was a bit much. I didn't think it had much more to say. I still have to give it a few more spins before deciding if I want to add this to my library. Highlights: Pony St, Kinder Murder, 13 Steps Lead Down, This Is Hell, You Tripped At Every Step, Still Too Soon to Know
First time listening. I dig it....but I'm a huge fan
I dig it. I like Costello's sound, I love his unconventional and quirky vocal stylings, and I love his lyricism. You never get a predictable love song or rock and roll dirge; there's always rich layers of complexity and nuance in the songwriting that give the listener so much to mull over. Especially if you're a lyrics first listener like myself. This isn't the best possible iteration of Costello though. This is someone who knows himself, knows what he's capable of and delivers it expertly. But it isn't Costello at his most powerful and impressive magnitude.
Has some fun pep to it at times
I consider myself an Elvis Costello fan, however I started to lose interest around the time of Imperial Bedroom and King of America. I came back for Blood and Chocolate which I thought was very good. The rest of the post Get Happy was either ignored or disliked. This album was ignored and it shouldn't have been. From the opening song I could see Elvis was ready to rock. I started to wonder...did he bring back the Attractions? Then the 3rd song starts; 13 Steps and that unmistakable organ sound of Steve Nieve. Yes The Attractions are back! Lots of strong songs with the unmistakable EC wit in the lyrics. Particularly strong is Sulky Girl. I'm glad I found this album. Not sure it belongs on this list but it does belong in my collection. 4 🌟
I listened to this one twice in a row. I've always been a fan of Costello's early stuff but hadn't heard much of anything beyond the 80s. These are really strong, am I crazy? I'm surprised I've never heard a single one of these. This is Hell was a real stand out for me. I like it.
I like some of these songs. I want to like him more than I do, because he seems smart and funny and charming, but there seems to be an irony there that's not letting me in. Or he's just much smarter than me and I don't get it. I particularly liked "This is Hell" and am hearing what I interpret as a Beatles, or similar influence, in the use of background vocals which I find amusing.
Elvis Costello nearly always works for me. I've never actually listened to this one before though, as I don't usually go past the 80's with him. This sounds like a nice return to form. His best work is always with The Attractions.
Great easy listening album. Has a unique voice with an alternative sound. I like all the sounds created in the album. The pony street is awesome.
I've not seen much reason to go out of my way to listen to Elvis Costello in the past but this one hit me just right today with its fun tunes and cheeky lyrics. I had a great time and want to keep it around.
This is the best of the many Elvia Costello albums I’ve heard on here so far. No hits, just great songwriting!
Straight forward rock record. In typical Elvis Costello fashion the songs are sarcastic, bitter, vitriolic, and with just a little bit of regret thrown in. Costello once said something like he only knew two emotions, anger and embarrassment. His songs can be so specific but relatable.
Good stuff!!!! Costello’s songwriting is proven here. Amazing melodies and song structure. The execution instrumentally was also top notch. The Attractions are tight as hell. The sounds weren’t great though :( Costello was way to far up front. I couldn’t hear super precisely what the rest of the band was doing. I got used to it pretty quick so it wasn’t distracting past the first few songs. It’s still a shame though because the instrumentals were clearly great. I wish I could really focus on them. I do really enjoy Costello’s voice but his accent is THICK on this one. With the vocals so far front in the mix, I’d like to at least sing along to the words. With his enunciation (or lack there of) I wasn’t sure what he was saying a good chunk of the time. That might just be a me thing, though. I’m sure his lyrics were good, too. Make me listen to them, or don’t. Don’t make me swim up stream. Either way, I didn’t feel like the album dragged at all (UNLIKE LEILA APPARENTLY). Everything felt appropriate and worth while. Only complaint is the mixing and some of the sonics.
The album didn’t grab me at first. However, once it got going I began to enjoy it more. Elvis Costello’s mix of rock, pop, punk, and a bit of jazz makes his music stand out. His use of melody is very interesting and he is clearly not afraid to genre hop. There is some filler on this album, but when it’s good, it’s really good
I think Elvis Costello is great, and this is a really strong album. My only minor complaint is sometimes his songs veer into maudlin, Broadway musical sounding affairs, but mostly it's great. 4 stars.
Liked it!
Bursting out with all the classic Costello trademarks- pounding drums, lyrical piano flourishes (always a suggestion of Abba in there), Bruce Thomas octave flourishes on the bass (on some tracks - on the rest it is either Nick Lowe or Elvis himself stepping through the smoke. pink Precision at the ready, saying "Tonight, Matthew, I'm going to be Bruce Thomas out the Attractions"). As always with Elvis, he spits out lyrics packed with tension, about women who are out of reach, of frustration and exclusion, and adds McCartney-esque flourishes to sweeten the rage. Clever-clever, as always "but its by Julie Andrew not by John Coltrane" - you need to join the dots yourself to get "My Favourite Things". Often the protagonists in the songs have a misogynistic outlook similar to the Stones on Aftermath. "Sulky Girl" - "You're talking like a Duchess but you're still a waitress". Great lyrical specificity, such as the use of Hungerford Bridge in London's Brilliant Parade. I think my issue with Elvis is that he had made quite a lot of quite good albums, which can end up sounding much of a muchness - that's probably on me rather than on him! 4 stars
Pleasantly surprised
I liked it. I'm a Costello fan.
Quite liked this.
Didnt expect to enjoy this as much as I did.
Favs: This Is Hell, You Tripped At Every Step Mehs: Pony St. Always enjoyed Elvis Costello. I think his voice works better on slow, coffeehouse stuff. When the songs get fast and tinkle-y, like "Pony St.," his voice grates on me. But some of his stuff like "This Is Hell" and "Everyday I Write the Book" (not on this album, but my favorite) is excellent.
Good album. I really liked This is Hell. I enjoy Elvis Costello, but his voice gets a little annoying to me after a whole album.
I like me some Elvis Costello. It's weird and eclectic in a way that works for me as opposed to weird and off-putting.
overall thoughts: woww i enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I was gonna. really like his voice. would definitely have to give another listen for the lyrics. sounded like it was good writing. not sure how to describe the genre, like a rock, pop type vibe. not 1 bad song on here, tho a couple of tracks I'd have to relisten. 4/5. fave tracks: my science fic twin, pony st, kinder murder, 13 steps lead down, 20% amnesia, sulky girl, all the rage, favorite hour
Liked this a lot better than the last one, songs were catchy
I love this man's voice. A pleasure to listen to, and one I'm likely to revisit, despite not having an individual track stick in my head.
une excellence prestation de Gerard de Palmas
Pretty good, will definitely revisit Elvis Costello. I had heard a few albums when I was in middle school, but hadn't listened to it since. I can tell he was influence for a lot of other bands I've heard, namely Wilco.
lots of really weird but funny songs on here. fun listen but i found it a little long. 8/10
8/10, pretty enjoyable, another good Elvis Costello album
I want to compare this to other Elvis Costello albums, and it's far from my favorite. But it's a great album overall.
Next tier EC.
I should listen to the lyrics. I do like it though.
Really good album that I've never listened to start to finish.
